Toddler injured in car crash A 2-year-old girl is among five people injured in a car accident in San Isidro on Sunday night. The child was rushed to Orihuela hospital with a head injury after two vehicles collided at around 10.40pm on the CV-909 in San Isidro. The other passengers of the two vehicles were aged between 20 and 31, according to reports,

and suffered varying degrees of injury. According to the Generalitat's Centre for Information and Emergency Coordination (CICU), three ambulances from SAMU and two from Basic Life Support (SVB) attended the scene. The two year old was brought to Orihuela hospital with head trauma, a 31-year-old woman was

treated for hip trauma and other injuries, and a 31-year-old man suffered a wrist fracture and other injuries. The other two injured passengers were a 22-year-old man who was treated for multiple injuries and another 20-year-old with thoracic and hip trauma, and both were treated the Vinalopó hospital in Elche.

Police seize 110kg of ‘illegal’ fruit and veg Local Police have seized 100kg of fruit and garlic, being sold illegally by street vendors. Four roadside sellers have been issued with fines ranging from €600 and €3000. The fruit – grapes and mandarins – and heads of garlic were seized as part of an operation against illegal street selling carried out over the weekend by Local Police. As part of the sweep, three food outlets were dismantled, apparently having been in operation without municipal authorization. Ten officers took part in the operation which first targeted a roadside seller, seizing 20 kilos of grapes and 30 kilos of mandarins. Officers then moved on to a second stall, seizing an almost identical amount of produce

before moving on to a third roadside food stall, seizing 10 kilos of garlic. According to police sources, the seized merchandise was being sold on the street and did not comply with the necessary sanitary measures for its distribution and storage. Illegal distribution and sales is considered a very serious infraction, especially for those carrying out commercial activity on public roads without the mandatory municipal authorization. In terms of food safety, without the municipal permissions in place, vendors have not been

checked for hygiene nor that the that foodstuffs have been sourced or stored safely.

Catral solar farm halted Work on the construction of a solar farm in the Vega Baja has been stalled due to objections and a recent change in the law. Certain legislation allows the installation of solar energy farms in the Valencian community, subject to certain conditions. However, an existing project planned for the Vega Baja has been called to a halt due to a recent law change. The reason is that part of the legislation specifies that these mega solar farms cannot be built in areas with a high risk of flooding. The legislation also protects valuable farmland – that is, soil with an established high ‘agronomic’ value, the most fertile land, cannot be used for solar farming. Unfortunately for the Vega Baja project, the plots earmarked for this so called solar mega-plant are both on a flood plain, and are of high agronomic value. Since mid 2019, a new process for transferring the authorised use of land from cultivation or construction to solar farming has been underway throughout the Valencian Community. Until an amendment to the legislation was published in August of this year, previous regulations allowed small scale solar plants on rustic land without the need to file a Declaration of Community Interest (DIC), an urban planning procedure that can take years. The Catral Electric Cooperative, under the new legislation, had already been building the infrastructure for a new solar farm in the Vega Baja with an investment so far of over €1 million and a planned capacity of 1,815 MW. The facility occupies an area of 37,000 square metres and at the moment the supports for 4,508

solar panels are being installed. The problem now is twofold – the land on which the solar plant is to be installed is both high risk for flooding, and of great agronomic value; two factors disallowed by the new regulations. Mayor of Catral Inmaculada Úbeda revealed that the Catral Electrical Cooperative has already had a major work permit from the town hall, issued last June, to begin work on the rustic land after completing all of the required municipal paperwork including approval by the highway administration as the plots of land in question are adjacent to the AlicanteCartagena motorway. Since then, conservation group Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante (AHSA) have presented objections to the project. According to a report in regional newspaper Información, the Cooperative responded to the allegations but the AHSA have not received notification of that response. AHSA’s allegations pinpoint the flood risk of the chosen plots but also the protection of the landscape. The last version of Valencian urban law

had allowed solar power plants on rustic land if they did not exceed 100,000 square meters without the need to complete the Declaration of Community Interest (DIC). However, between the time the Catral project was presented and when work began for its construction, the regional regulations changed with an amendment to the law on August 7th. The project in Catral could overcome this obstacle because the new rule is not retroactive but only if the Catral Cooperative has prior express authorization from the regional administration to operate a solar farm. The recent law change also leaves the proposal for a solar power station in Callosa up in the air. The Callosa proposal represents an investment of €2.5 million and if approved would see 7000 solar panels on 54,000 square metres of land.

Continued from page 1 administration. In his speech, the president reviewed all the measures adopted during the pandemic and announced an ambitious plan for new centres, residences, shelters and sheltered housing throughout the Valencian territory, as well as a plan to improve existing facilities. The budget is €510 million. Puig has also revealed that at the end of this year citizens will have three new courts - one per province - for matters

related to the pandemic. The Consell plans to deploy the largest investment in judicial infrastructure of the last two decades over the next two years. Puig said, "now is the time for the City of Justice of Alicante." Over the next two years the construction of 6 new justice buildings will begin: Alicante, Gandia, Torrent, Llíria, Vila Joiosa and the TSJ. The budget for the judicial project is €197 million. An €18 million project has also already been awarded to digitize the justice system and replace paper documents with digital files.

Expat Brits to lose UK bank accounts A number of large British banks are set to stop serving UK citizens resident in the EU as the government has not yet negotiated post-Brexit rules. Tens of thousands of British expats in Europe, including those living in Spain, will be stripped of UK bank accounts and credit cards, after the UK government failed to negotiate post Brexit rules. Lloyds, Barclays and Coutts have started warning EU-based customers they will stop serving them at the end of the year, according to reports in the British press. The written notice says that these banks will close customer accounts at 11pm on 31st December. If pan-European banking rules no longer apply to the UK once the Brexit transition period ends on 31st December, it would become illegal for UK banks to provide services for British customers in the EU without applying for new banking licences. So far, no new arrangement has been agreed leaving the bank with a

bureaucratic nightmare that means it’s easier to pull their services. Otherwise the banks would have to negotiate the specific banking rules of 27 member states in order to manage client accounts. Banks are making their own decisions as to which EU countries

to pull out of and which to continue operating in. Lloyds, one of the country's largest banking groups, told the Sunday Times that 13,000 customers living in the Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Portugal will see their current accounts terminated

by the end of the year. Barclays also confirmed that its banking and credit-card customers living in the EU had started receiving letters. Barclays said: “The timings for account closure will depend on the type of product that a customer holds, but we will always give notice to customers." Barclays customers living in Spain, France and Belgium have also confirmed that they received notice their Barclaycards will be cancelled. Two other major UK banks, NatWest and Santander have said that so far, they had no plans to close customer's accounts but are 'considering their options'. The UK Treasury responded to the reports by saying: “We expect banks to treat their customers fairly and provide timely communications to enable them to make appropriate decisions,” conceding that “the provision of banking services is a commercial decision for firms based on a variety of factors, including the local law and regulation of specific EEA countries.”

Orihuela wastes money paying taxis for people The local Councillor for Tourism for Orihuela, Mariola Rocamora, has been dealing with a considerable backlash as it came to light government funds have been used to pay for taxis for the general public. Opposition party PSOE asked the Councillor to explain why 890€ has been spent on ten taxi journeys between the Coast and the city. It appears that in order to attract tourists and boost numbers for its cultural events the department offered people the opportunity to see a show or experience a tourist route, with a door-to-door taxi service and for free! The offer came to light when opposition councillor Maria Garcia asked for an explanation as to why there were 10 invoices for round-trip taxis between the coast and the city totalling 890€ being put through the municipal accounts. Maria Garcia thought the amount was ‘excessive’ and wondered who had been booking the taxis and why. She challenged the Tourism Councillor over her findings and was told that free travel to events was offered between the city and the outlying areas encouraging resident from the city to experience coastal events, and vise versa. Councillor Rocamora explained that free transport has

Mariola Romamora

always been offered to these events for many years. The department looks at the number of transport reservations made for each event and then allocates buses, mini-buses or taxis to meet residents requirements. Councillor Rocamora said: "This complementary service has been offered for years in the programming of tourist routes and events, they have also been included in the advertising and reported as required.” More than 900 people have participated in the summer event programme, with 70 percent of the attendees coming from the Vega Baja and Murcia Region and given the pandemic this is a

response that the government team sees as a success. The PSOE Councilor, María García concluded: "It is worrying that we have to pay tourists for a taxi due to the low demand for tourist activities in Orihuela." García reminded Rocamora that although free transportation from the Coast to Orihuela has been offered for years, “if an average quota was not reached then maybe an alternative should be considered such as cancelling or re-scheduling the event when more attendance could be secured. ‘Otherwise it seems that we have to pay for people to come and do not notice the lack of demand’ she added.

National Police in Murcia have arrested a man who is wanted for murder. As well as the murder charge, the man had further warrants out for his arrest for drug trafficking and counterfeiting. The arrest was described by police as “a quick and efficient operation” in which 14 officers collaborated to successfully arrest the man. Back in 2008, the man was believed to be the head of a criminal organization which specialized in drug trafficking in Alicante and Murcia. The 39-year-old was on the run from justice for various crimes committed between 2008 and 2015. In the end, a joint police operation between several different departments culminated with the location and arrest of the man in Ceutí (Murcia). The fugitive had a number

Ready to sell your home? Are you sure? Like, for real? warrants out for his arrest - he was wanted by the Alicante Provincial Court for a crime of intentional homicide and for a crime against public health. In addition, a Swedish court had also ordered his location and arrest, in this case for his participation in counterfeiting currency. The search operation began a year ago, in September 2019. Detectives began to follow the trail of the man, who has a long criminal history in the Levante area where it is believed he began his criminal career in 1999 with petty crime. Later he progressed to crimes against public health and money laundering, until in 2008 he led a criminal organization based mainly in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia dedicated to acquiring large quantities of narcotic substances and then

reselling to smaller buyers. Police say the fugitive then specialized in the acquisition and subsequent sale and circulation of counterfeit 50 and 100 euro banknotes, with the province of Alicante being his main headquarters once more. His known criminal history continued in 2015 when, after an argument at a nightclub, he threatened the doormen with a firearm after they refused him entry to the establishment, and then later stabbed one of them with a knife. For this incident, he was arrested in Alcoy two weeks later by the National Police. Six unmarked vehicles and 14 officers participated on Thursday morning in the search, location and arrest of the fugitive. After his arrest, he was transferred to the National Police Headquarters of Murcia and has appeared in court.

Everyone has different reasons for selling their property. Some need to upsize or downsize, whilst others are just at that point in their lives to let their holiday home go. Before you list your property on the market for sale ask yourself WHAT?, HOW?, WHERE? & WHEN? These 4 questions will determine whether you should do it now, or wait: 1. What is your reason for selling? There’s always a reason why you’re wanting to sell. What’s yours? Is it that you need more room? Maybe you’re working from home now and need a separate home office. Figure your reason out first before following through with your decision to sell. If you’re wanting to “test the market” then now may not be the ideal time for you to sell. 2. How serious are you about selling? How would you feel if the property doesn’t sell in a reasonable amount of time? Have you already found your next home? If you’re not concerned if it sells or

not, now may not be the best time for you to list the property for sale. 3. Where are you going? After your property sells, where are you heading next? Staying and buying another property locally? Moving back to your original country? Or will you rent whilst you find your next home? If you have a plan for where you’re wanting to go after you’ve sold, then now is a good time to put the property on the market. 4. When are you hoping to make the move? How long have you given yourself? Are you moving for a new job? Before children start primary or secondary school? Discover and evaluate your own timescale. No one knows when the best time to sell a property is, until it has passed. Use the 4 questions as a guide to help you understand your own needs and reasons for selling. You’ll be competing with serious sellers, so make sure you’re ready! If you’re a serious seller but unsure where to start, head to www.homes4u.es/howtosellapropertyinSpain to learn exactly what’s involved.

Local neighbourhood association looks at coastal services Throughout the month of August, local neighbourhood association Asociacion de Vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas (AVCRL), conducted an on-line survey into the municipal services provided in Orihuela Costa in order to gauge residents level of satisfaction. More than 370 residents from across the area including La Zenia, Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig responded to the survey. According to the AVCRL the survey unfortunately confirms that the perception held by the vast majority of people living on the coast is that the council provides very poor services in Orihuela Costa, the quality of which decreases even more so in the summer season, as a result of the increases in the number of people on the coast, and the lack of reinforcements in personnel and equipment to cope with the influx. With the exception of Beaches, Citizen Security and Public Lighting, all other services received a poor score. The worst are: maintenance of parks and gardens, street cleaning, emptying of rubbish bins and clearing road and pavements of weeds. The survey ended with a question on the degree of overall satisfaction that residents have with the services provided in Orihuela Costa. This registered a

strong response, with 81 percent of those surveyed (302 people) stating that the services they receive are ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’. For this reason the association has sent an electronic copy of the report with the results of the survey to the Orihuela Town Hall, copying in the Mayor's Office and relevant departments surveyed. The AVCRL has requested that measures be taken, as soon as possible, to correct the issues raied in the survey. You can download the full report and annexes, with the results of the survey, at the following link: https://bit.ly/33j1oEF. At the same time the association took the opportunity to ask residents about their wishes regarding the construction of a Multipurpose Civic Centre in Orihuela Costa. Of

the 372 people surveyed, 93 percent (346 residents) state that they would use the centre, which gives an idea of the high degree of approval that its construction would have. Regarding what functionalities this centre should have, 73 percent of those surveyed voted for the following options which are ordered from the most votes: • Leisure and recreational activities • Cultural activities (exhibition hall, auditorium, theatre, etc.) • Library and reading room • Meeting rooms Again, the AVCRL has sent the results of this survey to the Department of Citizen Participation, so that they take these results into account when drawing up the plans for the construction of the multipurpose civic centre.

Man and 120 cats evicted A man and his 120 cats were evicted from an apartment in Gandia at the weekend. A local animal charity, Spama Safor, is now desperately seeking homes for the rescued animals. The animal shelter initially thought there were 96 cats to be rescued from the man’s apartment, but in the end, removed 120 cats from the property and now urgently need help to house the cats “at least until they are vaccinated or sterilised”. The cats had been left homeless after they and their owner were evicted from an apartment measuring 100 sq metres in the seaside town. Salvadora Tormas, an animal rescue volunteer who works at the charity told news outlets, “Apparently the owner took in a pair of cats three years ago and they have been procreating ever since.” The charity says it does not have enough space to take all the animals in as it is already housing about 200 cats. Tormas revealed that the Spama Safor shelter had already taken charge of 48 of the cats on Friday and were going to get the rest later on Saturday with the help of the owner, whom she described as a young man. “It’s a disaster. Someone should have helped this guy,” she said. They had been tipped off by the local authority but had received no help to recover all the animals, she added. Shelter volunteers were working around the clock to ensure all the cats were checked and dewormed. They were being helped by a handful of other

small animal charities in the area and are now desperately trying to rehome the cats. Spama Safor said on its Facebook page, “So far we have collected 120 cats from this house. Cats that have not seen sunlight and have not received any veterinary care or deworming since they were born. The number of kittens that

will have died is uncountable. They are not bad, but they are scared. If someone wants to take them in or adopt them, they can go to the shelter Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons during public service hours. All the animals are taken in by SPAMA SAFOR and by our volunteers. Any help is welcome. It's not the cats' fault - they need help from us.”

Guardia Civil boss bids goodbye to Torrevieja The Commander in Chief of the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, Antonio J. Leal Bernabéu, bid an official goodbye to the town of Torrevieja this week. After three years at the helm of command in Torrevieja, Commander Bernabéu has been reassigned to Madrid to act in an advisory capacity to senior management. Commander Bernabéu said goodbye to the mayor, Eduardo Dolón, and the Councillor of Security and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón at an official ceremony in the town hall. Both the mayor and the security councillor thanked the Commander in Chief for his service to the town over the last three years. He has now been reassigned to high command in Madrid where he will work in human resource planning and management. The mayor congratulated the

Commander and wished him the best, both professionally and personally, in the next chapter of his life but, at the same time expressed his sadness that Torrevieja is losing him. The mayor said that Commander Bernabéu always stood out with his professionalism. Finally, Mayor Dolón presented Commander Bernabéu with the traditional salt boat, reminding him that he will always be welcome in the city of Torrevieja.

Ryanair to cut one in five October flights Ryanair will cut a further one in five of its flights scheduled in October, blaming Irish and EU governments for what it called “excessive and defective” travel restrictions. The move comes on top of an earlier 20 percent reduction in flights in September and October, which it announced in August, blaming a drop in bookings and the introduction of fresh quarantine requirements. Ryanair expects to fly 40 percent of flights in October compared with the same month in 2019, a fall from the 50 percent it had previously predicted. However, it hopes its planes will fly almost three-quarters (70 percent) full. The budget carrier said the reductions in capacity were necessary because of frequent, and often short-notice, changes to travel restrictions and policies being introduced by EU governments, which have affected customers’ willingness to make future bookings. Ryanair said it was “disappointed” to cancel more flights, but warned it may announce more cuts if travel restrictions remain in place. “While it is too early yet to make final decisions on our winter schedule (from November to March), if current trends and EU governments’ mismanagement of the return of air travel and normal economic activity continue, then similar capacity cuts may be required across the winter period,” said a Ryanair spokesperson. Ryanair accused the Irish government

of keeping “Ireland locked up like North Korea since 1 July”, and claimed that this had not prevented Covid-19 rates from rising in the country. The carrier drew comparisons with Italy and Germany, which have reopened their borders to all EU travellers, but have lower rates of coronavirus cases than Ireland.

“Intra-EU air travel is not the problem and these defective travel bans are not a solution,” the spokesperson said. The airline is calling on the EU to introduce a coordinated approach to travel restrictions, provided the number of coronavirus cases in a country remain below a certain threshold.

Spain develops quick covid test for chemists Elche teen dies in tragic accident A 15 year old girl in Elche was pronounced dead after a tragic accident at her home. It is believed the teenage victim was stabbed in the heart by a shard of glass from the front door of the building in which she lived with her family. The incident occurred at 1pm on Thursday in a building located on Elche’s Calle Doctor Ferrán. The glass of the entry door to the building broke and hit the girl in the back, penetrating her body and piercing her heart, causing her death. Paramedics were immediately called to the scene but could not save the teen’s life. Once the girl was pronounced dead by medics, the National Police communicated the incident to the Elche court so that the judicial commission could be called in. Police cordoned off the scene and the girl’s body has been transferred to Institute of Legal Medicine in order to carry out an autopsy. An investigation into the events surrounding the tragic incident is underway.

Spain has created a test for diagnosing Covid-19 which produces accurate results in less than 30 minutes, thanks to research funding into the virus from the European Commission. According to project manager Laura Lechuga, the devices 'do not need technicians or laboratories' and can be used in local GP practices, in A&E, and even in high-street pharmacies. At a time when cases of SARS-CoV-2 are rising rapidly in Spain's capital – over a third of 'positives' are in the Greater Madrid region – even though they are starting to tail off in coastal areas and out in the provinces, where they are being instantly contained and contacts quarantined, mass testing with quick results is set to be key in the battle against the pandemic. Although Spain is immediately PCRtesting anyone who displays symptoms, for anyone who has been within close proximity of a 'positive', and in many cases, everyone admitted to hospital or attending consultations or treatment for chronic health conditions, including where these are completely unrelated to Covid-19, it can take between 24 hours and five days for results to filter through. This means those tested are forced to self-isolate at home until they get the allclear and so cannot go to work or school and the whole family has to do the same. Whilst mass testing is largely responsible for soaring figures – seven out of 10 of who are asymptomatic and the vast majority of who make a full recovery – being able to do so and obtain results within minutes is crucial to the population's being able to get on with their lives without putting others at risk. Now, Professor Laura Lechuga of the

Catalunya Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) says the newly-developed 'Convat' test is capable of doing just that. It uses optical biosensory nanotechnology to detect the virus from a sample taken from the patient, and is able to differentiate it from the common influenza virus. Also, it can detect different types of Coronavirus infection in animals – as 'Coronavirus' is a family of virii which causes a range of conditions, including the common cold, it is necessary to be able to work out which strain of it a human or animal is carrying. “Rather than being a test in itself, it's more a device which works with technology similar to that used by diabetics to measure their blood-sugar levels,” explains Professor Lechuga “The technology used is similar to that found in mobile phones and similar devices – microchips. Only, in this case, it's light-nodes that circulate, rather than electrons as in conventional circuits. Professor Lechuga, also lecturer for Spain's National Research Council (CSIC), says the fact the device uses 'Spanish technology' is crucial: Countries which develop home-grown devices and tests will normally, by default, keep their findings for their own population, meaning a sophisticated test method created in, for example, Japan, may not find its way to, for example, France. Like

this, Spain has one on home soil and does not need to seek out solutions from overseas, where the resident population will probably be given priority. The development is now 'very advanced' and 'almost at a precommercial level', she explains. And it could be available to anyone dropping into a pharmacy on spec, since it does not require laboratory technicians to examine the samples, as is the case with a PCR. This means samples do not stack up in

a lab waiting to be analysed due to a limited number of technicians available. The Convat could be on the market 'between December and January', although as it involves 'a research process', this could be a little slower.

New Madrid mobility restrictions The Madrid regional government has announced new restrictions aimed at curbing the rising number of coronavirus cases in the region. The order came into effect yesterday, Monday 21st September, and will last for at least 14 days. The restrictions on mobility affect people living within 37 health areas, of which 26 are located in six districts of the city of Madrid, and the rest in other municipalities in the Madrid region. People will be allowed in and out for essential activities such as going to school or work, or to care for dependents. Social gatherings are reduced to six people and public parks will remain closed. Capacity at stores and other commercial establishments is set at 50 percent and closing time is 10pm with the exception of pharmacies and gas stations. The affected areas are home to around 855,193 people or 17 percent of the population of the Madrid region, although they account for 25 percent of detected coronavirus cases. “We are aware that if don’t take these measures, the situation will be worse in a few days," said the deputy premier of the Madrid region, Ignacio Aguado. According to Madrid premier Díaz Ayuso, both the central and regional governments are going to work together to contain transmission in the region. “We have to avoid a state of alarm at all costs. And above all we need to avoid a confinement, an economic disaster," said the regional premier. “The head of Spain’s government is not coming here as a guardian of the Madrid

region, but to cooperate with it." On Thursday, Madrid regional officials had asked the central government to get “actively involved” in containing the spread of Covid-19. Shortly after this public appeal for help, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered to hold a face-toface meeting with Díaz Ayuso, who accepted the invitation. Under Spain’s system of devolved powers, regional governments are in charge of healthcare policy. Throughout the duration of the 99-day state of alarm declared by Sánchez in mid-March, Madrid officials had complained that the temporary centralisation of powers was depriving them of the possibility of effectively handling the crisis. The centre-right Madrid government accused the central executive, led by a leftist coalition of the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Unidas Podemos, of mishandling the Covid-19 crisis. But ever since the emergency state was lifted in June, Madrid has been recording increasingly worrisome coronavirus infection, death and hospitalisation figures, evidencing that the regional government is struggling to deal with the situation. In a bid to curb contagion, the Madrid regional government introduced a raft of new restrictions in September, including limiting social meetings to 10 people, and reducing the capacity at funeral homes and religious ceremonies, such as weddings, baptisms and communions. But with cases continuing to rise, Madrid’s deputy health chief, Antonio Zapatero, warned last Thursday that “more drastic”

measures were needed. Heart of the crisis After it was badly hit during the first wave, Madrid has once again become the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis in Spain. According to the latest epidemiological monitoring report published on Thursday by the Spanish Health Ministry, the average incidence of the coronavirus in the last 14 days in the Madrid region came in at 659 cases per 100,000 people. This is more than double the national average of 260 cases. According to the latest figures available before going to print, Madrid reported 1,301 new coronavirus cases, and added 4,902 to the historical season. Hospitals in the region have come under increased pressure due to

the spike in cases, with 21 percent of hospital beds occupied by Covid-19 patients, compared to the national average of 8.6 percent. Unions have also complained that Madrid’s primary healthcare system has been stretched to the limit, with doctors seeing more than 80 patients in a single shift. The Spanish capital is at the heart of the country’s railway and road networks, besides being home to its biggest international airport. Hundreds of thousands of trips are made each day by residents of nearby regions (Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León) who commute to Madrid for work. As a result, the evolution of the disease in Madrid is a national issue. A rise in cases in the region has a ripple effect on the rest of the country.

Mounting tensions As tensions mount, there are growing calls for a no-confidence vote against Díaz Ayuso. The Madrid region entered the new normality when the state of alarm ended on 21st June, without having passed through Phase 3 of the national de-escalation plan. In order to move to this final stage, regional authorities needed to show that they had strengthened the primary healthcare sector and public health – which they failed to do. Now, three months after the end of the state of alarm, the Madrid government still has not met these basic requirements. In May, it promised to hire 400 contact tracers, but in July, it only had 142. Only this month has the government begun to hire more contact tracing staff.

UK police call on Guardia Civil to help find underground drug factories

UK police call on Guardia Civil to help find underground drug factories

Guardia Civil travelled to the UK to collaborate with Lincolnshire Police in order to successfully locate four underground cannabis plantations. In scenes reminiscent of hit TV series, Breaking Bad, the drug factories were discovered in several ‘bunker’ like locations, more than six metres deep and buried under tons of waste from a recycling plant as camouflage. The collaboration arose as a result of Operation Hannibal, in which the first clandestine "underground" tobacco factory in Europe was dismantled by the Guardia Civil in the province of Malaga. With the help of Spanish officers, a similar police operation was carried out in Skendleby, near the East Coast of the United Kingdom. Specialists from the Guardia Civil travelled to the UK earlier this

month, at the request of the Lincolnshire Police, to collaborate with them in the search and location of illegal tobacco and drug production. The police operation was carried out at a farm located in Skendleby, Lincolnshire where after several days of searching, a total of four bunkers were located more than 6 meters underground. The bunkers were made up of 12 freight containers. Access to the containers was hidden, with security measures also in place around the farm. As well as being an agricultural and livestock farm, the facility also had a recycling plant with more than 300 tons of illegal waste, which made locating and accessing the bunkers extremely difficult. Three people were arrested and according to British authorities,

the value of the seized substances would exceed £550,000. Spanish experts were called in as advisors following the success of Operation Hannibal which resulting in the dismantling of an international criminal organization, based in the province of Malaga. The gang, led Britons, had started up an illicit underground tobacco factory in the town of Monda (Málaga) throughout 2019, the first “underground” factory located in Europe. The Malaga facilities were hidden 4 metres underground, below horse stables, where both the material and machinery necessary to produce 3,500 cigarettes per hour were housed. The factory was manned by Ukrainian workers. In addition to counterfeit tobacco, a large amount of marijuana was seized.

Five tips for protecting and growing your savings In today’s climate of global uncertainty and extremely low interest rates, careful planning is vitally important to secure long-term financial security.

3. Your timeline for investing Normally the longer you invest, the more risk you can take, which should help smooth out the volatility of the markets.

1. Establish your strategy Your portfolio should be created and managed for your personal goals and individual circumstances. Effective tax planning means your investments are fully Spanish tax compliant.

4. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket By varying the type of investments across countries and asset classes (e.g. stocks and shares, government bonds) the more chance of limiting exposure to any one area.

2. Risk vs Return You should be aware of the different types of investments on offer and take into account the level of risk you are willing to take in return for greater growth.

5. Regularly review your strategy It is vital to review how your investments are progressing. Circumstances change, laws change and tax legislation changes. By sitting down with your adviser, you can ensure your investments

Is it a cold, flu or coronavirus? As we head into the cooler weather and with winter approaching rapidly, many of us are feeling anxious about catching a cold because, this year it may not just be a common or garden cold, it may turn out to be Covid-19. Colds, flu and Covid-19 are caused by different viruses, but can have similar symptoms. It can be hard to judge which one you may have. Most people who feel ill with coronavirus will have at least one of the key symptoms: <a high temperature <a new, continuous cough <a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste So what do you need to know about other things you may catch in the coming months? Does a fever mean I have coronavirus? A high temperature is 37.8C or above. A fever like this can happen when the body is fighting off any infection - not just coronavirus. It is best to use a thermometer to take a measure. But if you don't have one, check if you, or the person you are worried about, feels hot to the touch on the chest or back. Although fever is a key coronavirus symptom, it could be the flu or a different infection. A high temperature is unlikely with a cold. If you have a fever, arrange a coronavirus test. What about a cough? If you have a cold or flu you may well

have a cough, along with other symptoms. Flu usually comes on suddenly and sufferers will often experience muscle aches, chills, headaches, tiredness, a sore throat and a runny or stuffed nose, along with the cough. It feels worse than a heavy cold. Colds tend to develop more gradually and are less severe, although they do still make you feel unwell. Along with a cough, there may be sneezing and a sore throat and runny nose. Fever, chills, muscle aches and headaches are rare. A coronavirus cough means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or three or more coughing fits or "episodes" in 24 hours. If you usually have a cough because of a long-standing medical condition like COPD, it may be worse than usual. You should get tested for coronavirus if you develop a new, continuous cough.

in the bin and then wash your hands. Remember ‘Hands – Face - Space’ to help stop the spread of coronavirus and other illnesses: <Wash your hands regularly <Use a face covering when social distancing is not possible <Try to keep your distance from those not in your household More people in Spain are being offered a free flu jab this year too in the run-up to winter.

What do loss or change to smell or taste mean? These are key symptoms of coronavirus and mean you should get a test. It could still be that you have a simple cold. But you need to check, even if you don't feel unwell, to avoid the risk of spreading the virus.

What if I am very unwell? People with coronavirus have a wide range of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe, although some will have none at all, but can still be infectious. Symptoms may appear up to two weeks after exposure to coronavirus, but usually around day five. Feeling breathless can be a sign of a more serious coronavirus infection. If you are having trouble breathing, contact your doctor online or over the phone. Data from an app that has been monitoring Covid-19 symptoms suggests children present less often with respiratory symptoms and are more likely to be suffering from fever, headaches, fatigue and skin rashes.

Does sneezing mean I've got coronavirus? Sneezing is not a symptom of coronavirus, and unless you also have a fever, cough or loss of smell and taste, you do not need a test. Sneeze droplets can spread infections though, so catch them in a tissue, put it

How about a runny or blocked nose? As we head into winter and with children back to school and more workplaces open, lots of people will be getting colds. A runny nose is not a reason to get tested for coronavirus as Covid=19 tends to be unproductive, meaning that a runny nose or chest phlegm are not common.

Sagrada Familia misses latest completion deadline Spain longest-ever building project looks set to miss its 2026 deadline due to the pandemic, but work is still in progress and will not stop until the construction team has finished; they have already taken 134 years, so a few more are unlikely to breach planning permission terms and conditions. Barcelona's Sagrada Família Cathedral, one of the country's top attractions – beautifully weird, tastefully wacky, totally unique – began its journey in 1883, when the plans were rubber-stamped. The first bricks of what was set to be the most global masterpiece of flamboyant modern architect Antoni Gaudí were laid in 1886. Other high-profile works of Gaudí's – including Barcelona's psychedelic mosaïc-patterned Parc Güell, and the green-and-red restaurant in Comillas (Cantabria) – have long since been finished, but the Sagrada Família is still being built. Even if Gaudí had lived a normal life expectancy, he would never have been able to see the finished result – but he was barely able to see the bare bones of it since, in a tragic and cruel twist of irony, 40 years after work started, he was run over a bus right next to his splendid cathedral-to-be and did not survive his injuries. Since 1886, a total of nine architects have been on the job, handing over the reins to each other as they retired, and only a

handful of the builders who have been involved in the Sagrada Família's construction will still be alive to see it finished, even if they all lived, or live, to a ripe old age. The final, self-imposed deadline by the works team was the year 2026, so as to have the cathedral 100 percent finished by the centenary of Gaudí's death. But the pandemic has put back some of the plans – lockdown meant only essential building work, typically that considered to be for solving structural emergencies in

domestic or key commercial properties, was able to be carried out. Also, a reduction in available funding to continue at the same pace. Given that much of the funding for the works comes from the entrance charge – and given that there was practically no tourism this year and none at all during the lockdown months – the amount the Sagrada Família Constructors' Board has been able to invest in the job this year has taken a sharp nosedive.

Slow recovery forecast

Dramatic rescue of Alicante mother, imprisoned by her son

Recent developments in the way the Covid-19 pandemic is playing out may force the Spanish government to update its economic forecasts. While a May projection that Madrid sent to Brussels envisioned a 9.2 percent drop in economic output in 2020, the Bank of Spain on Wednesday released a more pessimistic outlook that places the decline somewhere between 10.5 percent and 12.6 percent. This is down from the central bank’s own previous forecast, which had expected gross domestic product (GDP) to retreat by 9 percent to 11.6 percent. Although the end of the lockdown in Spain had created hopes of a strong recovery, fresh coronavirus outbreaks and travel restrictions imposed in late July put the brakes on economic activity, particularly in the hospitality industry. “The third quarter has gone from more to less, and that means that the beginning of next year will be worse,” said Óscar Arce, the Bank of Spain’s director general for economics, statistics and research. Under the two scenarios considered by the banking supervisor, in 2021 the economy could rebound either by 7.3 percent in the better situation, or by 4.1 percent in a scenario of

National Police are pictured here in the dramatic rescue of a woman in Alicante after she had been detained in her home by her own son. It was the woman’s former partner – the father of the man arrested – who raised the alarm which led to the rescue unfolding. Officers of the National Police arrested the 29-yearold man in Alicante, accused of locking himself and his mother in the family home, refusing to let her out. In the police operation that followed, several specialist teams from Alicante fire brigade worked together to free the woman through the balcony, using ladders in the rescue effort. It was the mother's ex-partner who made the call to emergency services, alerting police that his son was holding his ex-wife prisoner at home. Almost immediately after the call came through, two teams from the National Police Operational Response Groups, from the Central and North Police Stations, arrived at the building to take charge of the situation, and once at the door, they heard woman’s cries for help. The police officers verified that the entrance door was completely barred, preventing their access. Firefighters were then called in to try to access the fourth floor

more intense coronavirus outbreaks in the short term. “The main difference between these two scenarios stems from the assumptions regarding the course of the pandemic over the coming quarters, which, in turn, determines the degree of severity of the containment measures that

may be necessary and their consequent impact on economic activity,” said the Bank of Spain in a release. Scenario 1 would only require containment measures of limited scope and affect mostly hospitality services, while in scenario 2 the restrictions required could have a greater impact on the service sector, but also affect other productive sectors. The outlook talks about more modest growth in activity in 2022. “At the end of 2022, GDP would stand some two percentage points below its pre-crisis level in scenario 1, a gap that would widen to somewhat more than six percentage points in scenario 2.”

As for the impact of the Covid19 crisis on the labour market, the banking supervisor estimates that unemployment could reach between 19.4 percent and 22.1 percent in 2021 if the ERTE furlough scheme is phased out. Meanwhile, public finances are also expected to do poorly, with public debt soaring this year “by more than 20 percentage points in scenario 1 and by some 25 percentage points in scenario 2, to stand at 116.8 percent and 120.6 percent of GDP, respectively.” The deficit “will increase sharply in 2020, to stand at 10.8 percent and 12.1 percent of GDP in each of the two scenarios considered.” The Bank of Spain warns that “the short- and medium-term economic outlook continues to be highly dependent on epidemiological developments, in respect of which there remains a high degree of uncertainty.” As a result, “it cannot be ruled out that, in the coming quarters, more unfavourable epidemiological developments than those considered in scenario 2 may materialise.” On the other hand, these figures do not take into account the European recovery funds that have been allocated to Spain, and which the Bank of Spain admits could have a relevant impact.

apartment, as when police officers tried to get in through the door the man threatened to throw himself through one of the windows of the apartment. Fourteen firefighters worked together in two teams during the rescue. One team mounted a ladder vehicle and lighting in an attempt to safely rescue the woman. Meanwhile, the second team worked inside the building, using special tools to disable the barricade and access the apartment through the front door. The woman was lifted to safety on the basket of the fire engine, accompanied by two police officers. All the while, police negotiators were trying to convince the man to let his mother go and drop his threats to harm himself.

As police officers attempted to gained access to the apartment through the door, the man is alleged to have locked himself a room with a dangerous breed dog. Upon hearing the officers enter, the young man is said to have let the dog loose on the officers as he tried to reach a window, to throw himself out. Two other police officers, who had just entered the apartment by the window managed to catch the man and detain him for his own safety. With the help of the mother, the officers also managed to calm the dog and put a muzzle on it, proceeding to arrest the young man. The man is accused of an alleged crime of mistreatment in the family (domestic violence) and has been remanded in custody.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP While not sensationally successful, it was an inexplicably successful week for sterling, even after early Brexit jitters. And, it was much kinder for the pound considering last week, replacing a loss of 3% with an average gain of 0.6%, and by Wednesday sterling was in joint first place with the safe haven Japanese yen. Starting on the back foot, sterling had to overcome reservations and resistance to the alterations proposed by PM Boris Johnson to the EU Withdrawal Bill. With both sides of the political spectrum uniting in objection, saying it could imperil the Good Friday Agreement, MPs granted it a second reading. Investors appeared to calm and the pound picked up in response, although this saga is far from over – the bill needs to win approval from the House of Lords still. There was a big wobble on Thursday after the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting. Almost at the end of the document there was mention of “the Bank of England’s plans to explore how a negative Bank Rate could be implemented effectively”. It was not a promise of negative rates, nor even a threat, but it did send a shudder through the pound. UK inflation data gave the pound a boost too, taking a cent or more off the US dollar and euro after the release. But data right now is tricky to really judge, coming in out-of-date, and for UK employment data, a little misleading, with the furlough scheme due to unwind very soon. There are also doubts on how the Covid-19 testing programme is running, and if its shortcomings are impacting economic activity. After the new ‘rule of six’ began, the UK is far from out of the woods when it comes to this pandemic.

EUR It was not the same for successes for the euro however, but at least it wasn’t lonely, with the USD, CAD and CHF were equally uncomfortable, all falling by about 1% against the GBP. Europe was blamed by the UK PM for the Brexit quagmire, and then the EU took more heat, this time from China’s President Xi Jinping. The exchange came during trade negotiations which resulted in a modest deal to protect geographical product names. The euro did not suffer unduly as a result of the attacks though, it was flat against sterling and the Japanese yen, and added half a US cent. Economic data from the euro zone were mostly of second or third tier importance. The majority of them related to consumer prices which, in the context of a tragic global pandemic, are neither a good economic indicator nor a significant driver of monetary policy in Frankfurt or anywhere else. Standardised HICP inflation in Germany was -0.1%, in Spain -0.6%, and in Euroland as a whole -0.2%. Across the euro zone inflation ranged from -2.9% in Cyprus to 1.4% in Austria and Slovakia.Inflation numbers from France (0.2%) and Italy (-0.5%) were consistent with analysts’ predictions, and ZEW’s surveys of economic sentiment among investors in Germany and Euroland found improvement in both cases. Germany was 5.9 points higher on the month, at a 17-year high, while the Eurozone was almost ten points higher. Europe’s economic recovery is almost solely reliant on its recovery from Covid-19, and surging new cases on the continent should be a wake-up call, according to the World Health Organisation’s regional director Hans Kluge. He stated on Thursday that the 300,000 new infections reported across Europe last week alone had exceeded those reported during the first peak in March.

UK considering second lockdown UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock has not ruled out a second national lockdown, telling international media outlets: "We'll do what is necessary to keep people safe." It has been reported that scientists advising the government have proposed a two-week UKnationwide lockdown in October to try to tackle the rising number of coronavirus cases. Asked about those reports and the possibility of a second national lockdown, Mr Hancock said: "The last line of defence is full national action and I don't want to see that but we will do whatever is necessary to keep people safe in a very difficult pandemic." He added: "It isn't something that we ever take off the table but it isn't something that we want to see either, it is the last line of defence. "But what I would say this morning is the country once again needs to come together and recognise there is a serious challenge. "The virus is accelerating. Unfortunately, it isn't just cases increasing, it's also the number of people ending up in hospital increasing." According to the Financial

Matt Hancock

Times, experts on the government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M) have suggested a new national lockdown. This could coincide with the October school half-term in order to limit the impact on children's education, the newspaper added. Last Thursday, localised restrictions were introduced in northeast England, which means more than 10 million people across the UK are now in some form of local lockdown. New restrictions covering the

whole of Lancashire, with the exception of two thirds of the seaside resort of Blackpool have also been implemented. Mr Hancock confirmed the government would be "making further announcements" on localised actions. "We do have to recognise that the number of cases is rising and we do have to act because we know, especially from looking at other countries, that inexorably leads to more hospitalisations and sadly more deaths," he said. "And that is what we want to minimise and we want to protect people's livelihoods at the same time."

Parents send positive children to school The Public Health Department for the Province of Alicante has already detected the first cases in the province of irresponsible families who have sent their child to school, despite having a positive PCR test. This was confirmed recently by the director of Public Health for Alicante, Eduardo Alonso. In these cases, Alonso points out that the procedure to punish parents for this type of attitudes is very complex. The judicial system, said Alonso, “is a guarantee, we cannot rely on suspicions. You have to accumulate evidence, you have to collect the versions of all the parties, it is not something as simple to do as fining those who go without a mask, for example. Skipping quarantine by having a positive PCR test is included as a ‘serious infraction’ in the decree law of the Consell, approved last July, which establishes the specific sanctioning against noncompliance with prevention measures against Covid. The penalties can range, in these cases from 601 euros to 30,000 euros. "Schools must establish filters to

detect anomalous situations and ensure that we are notified in the Public Health Department so that we can intervene," said the head of the Department of Health. However, Alonso dismisses these situations as "extreme" and maintains that for the moment they are isolated cases.

Eduardo Alonso made these statements after the meeting held by staff from the health centres of the Department of the General Hospital of Alicante and Public Health with the Covid managers of each educational centre in the province. Regarding how these first days of school are going, Alonso was blunt in pointing out that things are not going well. "In the same way that in the general community there is a progressive increase in cases, this is reflected in

the school environment." In the two weeks of the new school year, there are already twelve nuclei of in isolation in the Alicante region. "It is neither a lot nor a little, but a sign that the problem is growing," he added. Alonso called on the responsibility of parents to take extreme measures of protection against the virus when they are outside the classrooms. “No matter how rigorous we are in the educational centres, if the part of responsibility that corresponds to the families fails and they allow the children to gather in groups at the exit or entrance, we are spoiling the protective effect created in the school”. Given the arrival of the flu, coughs and colds, the important thing is that no case escapes, "that any clinical concerns result in the necessary alarms and concludes with tests and isolation if appropriate." To do this, the head of Public Health ensured the public that there are "enough trackers" and that the role of teachers is essential "to establish track and trace contacts."

Zara encourages shoppers with online options In a bid to get people shopping again, Spain´s most world-famous high-street clothing chain has launched a booking system for allowing customers to check what is in store before heading there in person and they can also book a changing room. Over the past few months, and especially in the latter days of lockdown when non-essential retail outlets were starting to reopen to the public, Zara – Inditex's star brand – had to keep its changing rooms off limits and restrict numbers of people on the premises. Even now the changing rooms are back in use – being disinfected regularly – number limits still apply to ensure social distancing, meaning queues tend to build up for their use even in large cities and shopping centres. This means a customer may be hanging around waiting for ages, only to rummage through all the rails and find the items they had hoped to buy are out of stock, or no longer available in their size. Window-shopping, which can sometimes lead to on-the-spur purchases or a plan to go back later and buy specific items after payday, has become a thing of the past, as consumers are more reluctant to shop for leisure and tend to wait until there is something specific they need.

News

CostaBlancaPeople 22nd - 28th September 2020

Zara has all these eventualities covered now: changing rooms can be booked in store, via a mobile phone App or on its website; additionally, the site allows people to browse their nearest store's wares and know for certain whether or not an item they like the look of is going to be there for them to buy, saving them an unnecessary trip. In a further boost to shopping, the click-and-collect online purchase service has now been reduced to just half an hour and is available at all stores, meaning customers can buy what they want or need and then pop to the shop, rather than the other way around, and reduce their time on the premises, and not having to queue at the till to pay. Zara is the latest in a long line of retailers to set up a near-instant click-and-collect service as a result of the pandemic – other highprofile chains to do so include Amazon and Spain's largest

department store, El Corte Inglés. At first, the changing-room booking facility and the option to check stock in individual stores is only set to be available in 25 shops nationwide, but the mother firm, Inditex, wants to roll these out to every store in the country over the next few months. So far, Inditex has not announced plans to do so for its other brands, but these could be next if the new systems in Zara prove successful. Inditex, founded by Spain's richest man, Amancio Ortega, and his late first wife, Rosalía Mera, also owns Zara's 'younger sister' Bershka, cut-price basics store Lefties, the two other low-cost young fashions brands Stradivarius and Pull&Bear – feminine and rockchick-style in the former and casual and street-wear in the latter – underwear chain Oysho, and midupper high-street ranges Massimo Dutti and Uterqüe in clothing and Zara Home for interiors.

So far, the campaign has been really well received among local business owners and it is encouraging to see so many businesses becoming advocates for the campaign by sharing the logo, supporting the initiative and voicing their support for fellow business owners in the area. Already, the campaign has had a positive impact with some of those displaying the logo already reporting that they have won new business this week as a direct result which is a wonderful result! We are seeing, and experiencing, the negative impact of the global pandemic and believe that we as a community can come together, even in some small way, to make a difference to the local economy by fuelling local support. With local businesses still reeling from lockdown, this summer has been difficult for us all. However, it is our hope that together, the local community can help sustain the local economy through the winter months. Why have we launched this campaign? As the global pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to life on the Costa Blanca, we all need to do everything we possibly can to help our local economy

“SHOP LOCALLY – SUPPORT US...You will receive a more friendly personal service with specific expertise on products, resulting in better customer satisfaction...KEEP MONEY IN THE COMMUNITY.” Simon & Angela Jennings The Kitchen Shop, Urb. La Marina

“Fitness has never been more important in thesedifficult times, support your local fitness centre and improve your mental and physical wellbeing. Elite fitness are here to help support you.” Jo, the personal trainer at Elite Fitness, Quesada

“It has never been more important than now to support your local cafe bars. We are thankful to all our regular customers for your continued support and of course, we welcome all new customers too! ” The Rolling Pin, Quesada

bounce back stronger than ever. That’s why we’ve launched our Shop Local campaign. We want to engage in partnership with local business leaders to give our towns, commercial centres, retailers, small businesses and charitable organisations a boost. We want to help businesses, shops, restaurants and entrepreneurs the support they need to continue to make the southern Costa Blanca a great place to live, work and socialise. How can local businesses get involved? Display a Shop Local poster to promote your local business and neighbourhood so residents invest in the local economy by shopping locally. Collect a free poster from our office or, email us and we will send you a copy to print for yourself. Alternatively, go to our website to download a free copy. Use our Shop Local Shop on your website, email signature and social media to promote the campaign. Feel free to copy the logo from our website or social media, or email us and we will send you a copy. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal in your social media posts. Buy locally from other businesses when purchasing goods and services for your business. Let your customers know you are open

along with promoting business offers, discounts and opening hours. Will the campaign make a difference? We certainly hope so! Sometimes, all it takes is a reminder to make buyers pause to think twice about whether to buy online or locally. If we can all get on board, and become our own advocates ambassadors for the local economy if you like – together, we can keep our local economy, and all of our livelihoods, afloat. Making this campaign visible – on your social media (check our our ‘frame’ for your profile picture, search for ‘Shop Local Costa Blanca’ in frame options when you edit your profile picture to add a frame), in your window or place of business will help ensure it works and stays in the forefront of people’s minds. Don’t forget, if you have an offer or special deal to entice new business, let us help you shout about it! Tag us in your social media posts promoting your deals or offers and we’d love to share them to our followers! Why shopping local works Shopping at local businesses puts money right back into the local economy, and by spending money in our local shops, restaurant, café or bar, we can all do our bit to help revive our local economy. Supporting our local businesses

creates jobs in local communities. Helping to grow the number of jobs in our local areas makes for a better place to live and work, which then creates a healthy economy for the community here on the Costa Blanca. Small businesses are often run by people who live in or near our local community. As the southern Costa Blanca continues to recover from the pandemic, the experience of buying locally from a friendly face offers a dose of normality that many people may have missed. Shop local, Costa Blanca It is our hope that Shopping Locally becomes a daily practice to grow a stronger community for us all. Across the southern Costa Blanca region, we value our local businesses and understand the impact that every one of our hard-earned euros can have on the vitality and survival of the places where we live. We all know that spending our money locally not only supports our friends and neighbours who run the businesses that make our communities unique, but also the critical public services that keep us safe and uphold our quality of life. Advocates We are still looking for advocates for our Shop Local campaign. To get

involved, all you need to do is display the campaign poster in your business and social media. Use the hashtag #CBPShopLocal and tag us in your posts so we can share your business with our followers – this applies to all local businesses, not just those who currently advertise with us. Together, we can ensure that our local economy not only survives, but thrives.

“Help us to help you and help each other stay safe everyone.” Westy, Gordon Barlow Plumbing

“At Reeves, we think this Shop Local campaign is incredibly important to the community. Our customers support us, and we support our customers. During lockdown, we offered deliveries so that our clients could stay at home and now we continue to ensure the best value with our breakfast packs and Sunday roast packs. Getting to know your local butcher is a win win for everyone. Customers get a better service, better quality meat, better value and overall it is better for the local economy.” Reeves Butchers “Supporting your local bar or restaurant is more important now than ever. At Sacko's we have always been much more than a bar - we're a community centre, a support group! We are there for our customers, and they are there for us. I'd urge everyone to support the local economy, even if it is just a coffee and a sandwich or a takeaway order. Shopping locally, eating out locally - it's all so important right now.” Yvonne, Sacko's Bar, El Limonar

No lockdown for magnets! For the seventeenth summer in a row Steve and Irene-Maria Campbell were planning on holding their MAGNETS Children’s Holiday Bible Club in Torrevieja with an Olympic theme – Run the Race. The year 2020 began with great hope for a new decade, with many proclaiming to have ‘2020 vision’ for this new year. However, as the months rolled on that vision became blurred as the extent of the Coronavirus became clearer, a worldwide pandemic was declared and

most countries went into lockdown. Many events planned for this year had to be cancelled, including the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Steve and Irene-Maria’s flight to Spain in May was cancelled and they had to wait three long months before they could return here in early August. But what were they going to do about MAGNETS as the Church where it is normally held did not permit children into the building? They decided to hold Mini

MAGNETS@Home, meeting in their garden with smaller groups of children on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, with a different set of kids on each of the days, observing social distancing. The couple were able to provide most of the usual programme for the Holiday Club, including games, memory verse, Bible story, quiz, crafts and finishing off with juice and biscuits – very welcome on a hot, sunny afternoon! So no lockdown for MAGNETS this

year. Steve and Irene-Maria said, “It was different yet just as enjoyable as ever and all who came certainly would agree. No-one knows what next year will bring, but we hope and pray for an end to the pandemic.” One thing is for sure, if Steve and IreneMaria have anything to do with it, MAGNETS 2021 will go ahead. See you next year!

Killer whales attacking Spanish boats Killer whales are said to be ramming and harassing sailboats travelling along the Spanish and Portuguese coasts in a series of incidents that have left scientists baffled. Sailors have sent numerous distress calls in the past two months with reports of crew members sustaining bruises and at least one boat having to be towed away because of serious damage. In one instance, a crew member on a 46-foot delivery boat described being surrounded by nine orcas off Cape Trafalgar in Spain. The crew member, Victoria Morris, said the whales, which can weight up to 6 tons, rammed the boat continually for one hour, causing it to spin 180 degrees and the engine to shut down. Morris said that the 28th July incident felt like a "totally orchestrated" attack. "The noise was really scary," Morris said. "They were ramming the keel, there was this horrible echo, I thought they could capsize the boat. And this

deafening noise as they communicated, whistling to each other. It was so loud that we had to shout." The orca pod had left by the time help arrived, but the boat still had to be towed to the nearby town of Barbate. There the rudder was found to be damaged, with teeth marks along the boat's underside. Several days earlier, a man was motor sailing alone off Barbate when he heard a sound "like a sledgehammer" and saw his wheel "turning with incredible force." Nick Giles said that his 34-foot Moody yacht spun 180 degrees as he felt it lift up. "The boat lifted up half a foot and I was pushed by a second whale from behind," he said. While the sailor was resetting the cables, he said, an orca hit again, "nearly chopping off my fingers in the mechanism." In a similar instance, a crew member from another delivery boat near Barbate told the port authority that the force of the orcas hitting the ship "nearly

dislocated the helmsman's shoulder and spun the whole yacht through 120 degrees," according to The Observer. Researchers cited by The Observer said it was not unusual for orcas, which are highly social and curious animals, to follow boats or even playfully interact with them. It is unnatural, however, for them to become aggressive, and experts told The Observer it was unlikely — though not impossible — that the orcas were mounting deliberate attacks. "For killer whales to take out a piece of a fiberglass rudder is crazy," Rocío Espada, who works with the marine biology laboratory at the University of Seville and has observed this population of orcas in the Gibraltar Strait for years. "I've seen these orcas grow from babies, I know their life stories, I've never seen or heard of attacks." Ruth Esteban, who has also studied the Gibraltar orcas extensively, said that it was unlikely multiple orca groups would display such unusual behaviour

and that a single group was therefore most likely responsible. Espada believes said the ramming could indicate stress, as Gibraltar orcas are endangered and often compete with fishing boats for food in the noisy and polluted waters in the busy strait. Ezequiel Andréu Cazalla, a cetacean

researcher also described the Gibraltar Strait as "the worst place for orcas to live." Another researcher, Pauline Gauffier, said that competition for bluefin tuna in particular had led the local orca population "to the very edge, with only about 30 adults left."

Sánchez tells Britain: “Leave withdrawal agreement alone” Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez has urged the UK to scrap its plans to change the Brexit withdrawal agreement in terms of the Irish backstop through Boris Johnson's proposed Internal Market Bill. During the Southern European Countries Summit, between Sánchez and six other leaders of EU member States along the Mediterranean, Spain's president said: “Agreements are there to be fulfilled.” He called for Johnson to abandon his Internal Market Bill and keep to the terms of the deal struck ahead of the UK's departure from the European Union on 1st February this year. Sánchez's plea echoes that of key figures in Brussels, including Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who has told Johnson to withdraw the Bill before the end of September or risk a 'no-deal' scenario. The EU has issued a sound ultimatum to the UK, saying the proposed unilateral amendments to the withdrawal agreement had 'seriously damaged trust' between the bloc and the British

government and could mean talks of a trade deal ceased altogether. In fact, Europe may even take legal action to enforce the withdrawal agreement if Britain goes ahead with its plans. European Commission vicepresident Maros Šefčovič had some strong words for the UK – using language described by the Spanish media as 'unprecedented in diplomatic relations' and 'even more so in EU bureaucratic interactions' – saying the unilateral alteration Boris Johnson signs the Brexit withdrawl agreement to the withdrawal “The withdrawal agreement contains a agreement would be 'an extremely number of mechanisms and legal serious violation' of international law. remedies to address violations of the

legal obligations contained in the text, which the European Union will not be shy in using,” he stressed. Europe has informed Boris Johnson's cabinet in writing that the withdrawal deal is a legally-binding contract which 'neither the EU nor the UK can unilaterally change, clarify, amend, interpret, disregard or disapply'. The substance of the Internal Market Bill the UK is attempting to bring into force is that no checks on goods transported to mainland Britain from Northern Ireland will apply after the Brexit transition period, and no forms will need to be filled in.

It would allow the UK to disapply European legislation concerning State aid on trade transactions between EU territory and Northern Ireland, and states explicitly that these provisions cannot be declared illegal in Britain just because they are considered incompatible with international treaties. Cabinet office minister Michael Gove insists it is a question of Parliamentary sovereignty – as in, UK Parliament 'would not be acting unconstitutionally' if it passed legislation that breached Britain's treaty obligations. Gove says any treaties 'only become binding to the extent that they are enshrined in domestic legislation' and that 'whether to enact or repeal' said legislation and its content 'is for Parliament and Parliament alone' to decide. Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis admitted earlier this week that the Internal Market Bill would 'break international law', but 'only in a specific and limited way'.

Spain holding out for tourism bounce back Holidaymakers 'on the rebound' could mean the next two years are more successful than those prior to Spain's disappointing 2020, says the Minister for Industry Reyes Maroto. As long as it is safe – in public health terms – 2021 could see the nation's tourism industry 'bounce back' with visitors determined to make up for lost time. “Provided we can regain trust in our tourism industry, all that we have lost this year could be made up for and more besides over the next one to two years,” she says, confidently. In addition to international keenness to get back to Spain as soon as they are able, holidaymakers may even have a greater amount of money to spend and be more determined to spend it: Not having been able to travel this year, or being reluctant to do so because of the pandemic, means habitual tourists will have saved themselves the cost of their annual break in 2020 and have more to

blow on their long-desired trip next year. But whether it happens as soon as this will depend upon a vaccine being widely available in time for the world to plan their Spanish travels – although even if it is not the case and the inoculation comes too late for next year's holiday plans, Reyes Maroto is certain this eagerness to get away will spur the world's tourists on for 2022. She thinks the likelihood of a moresuccessful-than-ever tourism season in 2021 and 2022 could lead to the country's earning all the income it should have had in 2020 on top of that expected under normal circumstances in the next two seasons. The government is looking at keeping temporary lay-offs – what the UK calls 'furloughs' and Spain calls 'ERTEs' – in place for as long as they are needed, so workers do not have to be made redundant altogether, their companies do not have to shut for good, and dole money will be available for everyone

whose jobs have to be put on hold until it is feasible for their bosses to take them back. Sra Maroto adds that the national authorities are also looking at 'some additional measures' – as yet undefined – which would 'enable the tourism industry to survive until at least Easter 2021', preventing firms from dropping out of the market just because they have had one bad year. “The calendar we have for a vaccine is based on approximately the end of this year or the beginning of 2021, so the industry has clear timescales within sight as to when it can start working on its recovery,” she explains. “This year's lack of tourism will show in Spain's economic results for 2020, but that impact will start to reverse from next year onwards. “Spain, of course, depends much more upon the holiday industry than countries such as, for example, Germany, which is why our GDP has taken a much

bigger hit than those of other nations. “But the minute we have a vaccine, the rebound effect on the economy in Spain will be much faster than it will in other countries – the tourism value chain is one that gets greased very quickly. “This said, we have to get our 2021 budget signed off – we can't allow this

not to happen – because we need it in place to be able to respond to the challenges the pandemic has created and to start our recovery. “Without being able to sign off the 2021 budget, it would be really difficult to be able to use the European Covid bail-out funds where they are most needed,” Sra Maroto concludes.

The five healthiest types of wine If you like wine, you've probably raised a glass (or two) to the reports that drinking it is good for you. Some research has shown that moderate wine drinkers are leaner, exercise more(!), and consume more antioxidants, including those not found in wine. But you might be wondering, are certain wines healthier than others? The short answer is yes. Read on for the ranking of wines based on the health protection they may offer - and why moderation is key, regardless of what you pour into your glass. 1. Dry reds Ruby red wines are the healthiest wines, with more antioxidants than all the other varieties. That's because the grape skins aren’t removed during fermentation. The antioxidants the dark skins provide, such as procyanidins, have been linked to health benefits including heart disease protection, and possibly longevity. For the record, researchers note that wines from southwest France and Sardinia tend to have higher levels of

procyanidins. On average, wines from these two areas had five times more procyanidins than wines from Spain, South America, the U.S., and Australia. 2. Orange wines After dry red, your best bet is orange wine, which has been described as "white wine made like red." In white wine making, the skins are typically removed just after the grapes are pressed. In orange wines - which are made with green grapes - the skins remain in contact with the juice (for anywhere from one week to one year), which results in wine with an orange hue. This is why orange wine is sometimes referred to as “skin contact wine."

In addition to colour, the skins impart plenty for good-for-you antioxidants. 3. Rosé Generally, rosé is made using red wine grapes, but the “skin contact” time is shorter than with red wine and orange wine. For red wine, it may be one to two months; whereas for rosé, it’s often 2 to 20 hours. Less contact time means fewer antioxidants. 4. Dry whites In white wine production there is generally no “skin contact” time, which means phytonutrients from the skin don’t make their way into the wine. While I don't think dry white is a "bad" choice, it's just missing some of the potentially protective properties of its more colourful counterparts. 5. Sweet whites Sweet white wines are sweet because, of course, they contain more sugar. For example, a five-ounce pour of Moscato contains 21 grams of carb, with 13 as sugar. Compare that to the same portion of chardonnay, which has 3 grams of carb with 1 as sugar. Think of these varieties as dessert, and make them occasional treats.

Cadbury competition winner In July, chocolate maker Cadbury asked members of the public to vote for which of the three shortlisted flavours from its Inventor Competition should be taken into production. The three finalists were: Taylor’s Cadbury Dairy Milk Out of the Blueburry, Shannon’s Cadbury Dairy Milk Crunchy Honeycomb and Gillian’s Cadbury Dairy Milk Coconutty. The winner of the vote was Crunchy Honeycomb and this will now become part of the permanent Dairy Milk range. Although once in production it will officially become Honeycomb & Nuts. Beatrice Berutti, Tablets Brand Manager at Cadbury, says: “We’re

absolutely thrilled to reveal Shannon as the winner of our second Cadbury Inventor Competition. We love experimenting with different flavours, especially when we can bring our fans into the process of inventing new and wonderful creations. Cadbury Dairy Milk Honeycomb & Nuts mixes classic ingredients in a unique and mouth-watering way, which is just one of the reasons why it has captivated the nation – including presenter Laura Whitmore. Shannon, 19-year-old student from Nottingham, says she created her Cadbury Dairy Milk Honeycomb & Nuts after declaring her love for crunchy

honeycomb and sweet caramel. Shannon’s bar combines milk chocolate, golden crunchy honeycomb pieces with tasty caramel flavoured fudge and chopped hazelnuts to add an extra crunch. Shannon said: “I’ve always had a love for honeycomb and caramel, which are my two favourite flavours. The mix of golden honeycomb pieces and caramel flavoured fudge add that extra sweet flavour to the bar. Finally, with the addition of an extra crunch, chopped hazelnuts, I knew a winning bar was formed!” Shannon's Honeycomb & Nuts Cadbury bars will be available to buy from January 2021.

Let’s grab some tapas! ‘Let’s grab some tapas’ is the title given to the latest ‘tapas route’ in Torrevieja which takes place this coming weekend. The first instalment has already happened (from September 17th to 20th) but don’t worry if you missed it, as you have another opportunity to enjoy the event. From September 24th to 27th, a tapas trail is on offer from a number of participating restaurants, bars and cafes in the town. With a tapa and a drink for just €2.50, the event offers an affordable way to try out new and exciting venues with both traditional and ‘innovative’ tapas on the menu. The initiative, now in its 5th year, is organised by the Association of Hospitality Companies of Torrevieja y Comarca. The hugely popular event is always a draw for tourists but under the current circumstances, many participating restaurants are hoping for support from the local community. All of the establishments participating in the event have committed to ensuring the Covid-19 safety protocols are in place so that diners can enjoy the event with peace of mind. Participants can once again vote for their favourite tapa and by voting, will be entered into a prize draw to win a number of meals for two. The special tapas menus are

available from participating restaurants from September 24th to 27th (from Thursday to Sunday) from 12 noon to 4.30pm and from 7pm to 11pm. There are a number of exciting tapas on offer and each restaurant seems to have played to its own strengths – for example, Mat’s Burger in Torrevieja offers mini burger based tapas (including the

mysterious ‘Brexit Burger’) while Restaurante El Pescador offers two intriguing seafood options. To see the full menu on offer, go to the following link where you can see details of each tapa as well as a map so you can plan your route: www.costablancapeople.com/?p =5791

Desserts Classic Arctic roll Ingredients For the ice cream 2 eggs , separated 50g icing sugar 1 vanilla pod , seeds only 150ml double cream

7. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line a 24 x 32cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment (with plenty of excess) and grease well. Whisk the eggs and sugar together with an electric hand whisk for 2-3 mins or until thickened and pale.

For the jam 200g strawberries , quartered, plus a few extra for decoration juice ½ lemon 200g golden caster sugar For the sponge knob of butter , for greasing 3 eggs 100g golden caster sugar , plus extra for dusting 100g plain flour ½ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp vanilla extract Instructions 1. To make the ice cream, whisk the egg whites in a bowl with an electric whisk until stiff. In another bowl, whisk the yolks, icing sugar and vanilla seeds until pale and billowy. In a third bowl, whip the double cream until holding its shape. 2. Fold the yolk mixture into the cream, then fold in the egg whites. Pour into a 900g loaf tin lined with a sheet of baking parchment bigger than you’ll need – this will help you later. Freeze for 2 hrs. 3. Remove the ice cream from the freezer and tin when it feels set but soft. Use a spatula to shape

the mixture into a rough sausage shape, then use the parchment to roll the mixture tightly together into a cylinder about 35cm in length. 4. Twist the ends of the baking parchment like a cracker and return to the freezer for a further 1 hr. 5. To make the jam, first put a saucer in the freezer. Put the strawberries, lemon juice and sugar in a heavy- based saucepan over a high heat. Bring to the boil, stirring occasionally. Boil rapidly for 5 mins, then take off the heat. 6. Put 1/4 tsp of the jam onto the cold saucer – if it wrinkles when pushed with your finger, the jam is ready. If it’s still runny, return it to the heat and boil again for another 2-3 mins, then test again. Once the jam is set, leave it to cool.

8. Fold the flour, baking powder and vanilla extract into the egg mixture with a large metal spoon until there are no pockets of flour visible. 9. Gently tip the mixture into your prepared Swiss roll tin and bake in the oven for 15 mins or until lightly golden and springy to the touch. 10. Remove from the oven, allow to cool for 1-2 mins or until cool enough to handle, then carefully roll up the sponge while it’s still warm (keeping the baking parchment attached). Leave to cool completely in its rolled-up shape. 11. Uncurl the sponge and spread the jam on the inside. Working quickly, unwrap the ice cream and put it on top of the jam. Roll the cake up around it. 12. Wrap the Arctic roll in a new sheet of baking parchment and a layer of foil too. Return to the freezer for a further 20-30mins, then unwrap, slice and serve immediately.

Gooey toffee puddings Ingredients 140g softened butter , plus extra for greasing 200g light muscovado sugar 3 large eggs , beaten 175g self-raising flour Cream or ice cream, to serve (optional)

2. To make the sauce, put the sugars and butter in a small saucepan and cook over a low heat until the butter melts and the sauce is glossy, stirring regularly. Add the cream and bring to a simmer. Cook for 1 min, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and divide between the pudding basins. Leave to cool for 30 mins.

Ingredients 750g (about 2 large) bramley apples 400g (about 3) crisp eating apples, such as cox 250g blackberries 2-3 tsp cornflour 100-150g caster sugar, depending on the sweetness of the fruit For the crumble topping 240g plain flour 150g butter, at room temperature, cut into small pieces 120g demerara sugar You’ll also need… 2 litre shallow baking dish Instructions 1. Heat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/gas 5. For the crumble topping, sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl, add the butter and rub the mixture together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs, as for pastry. Continue rubbing in until the mixture begins to stick together to form small pea-size clumps. Stir in the demerara sugar. 2. Peel, quarter and core the bramley apples, then thinly slice them into a large mixing bowl. Peel, quarter and core the eating apples, then cut them into slightly thicker wedges. Add to the bramleys with the blackberries and mix together.

3. Mix the cornflour with the caster sugar, add to the bowl of fruit and toss together well. Set aside for a few minutes until the fruit juices begin to seep out and make the sugar damp, then toss everything together once more until the cornflour mixture clings to the outside of the fruit. 4. Spoon the fruity mixture into the baking dish, then pack it down into an even layer with your hands or the back of a spoon. 5. Spoon the crumble mixture in an even layer over the top of the fruit. Bake for 45 minutes until the topping is richly golden brown and the fruit is bubbling hot and tender. 6. Remove the crumble from the oven and leave to rest for 5-10 minutes. Serve hot with custard, crème fraîche, cream, ice cream or yogurt.

Baked lemon & vanilla rice pudding Ingredients 600ml milk 450ml single cream zest 1 unwaxed lemon 1 vanilla pod , split 25g caster sugar 100g short-grain pudding rice 25g butter , diced

For the sauce 75g light muscovado sugar 75g dark muscovado sugar 75g butter 150ml double cream Instructions 1. Lightly grease 8 mini metal pudding basins that each hold around 200ml. Place a small disc of baking parchment in the base of each one.

Blackberry and apple crumble

3. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Beat the butter, sugar, eggs and flour together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon or electric whisk until pale and thick. Spoon the mixture into the pudding basins and place them in a small roasting tin. 4. Add cold water to the roasting tin until it rises just 1cm up the sides of the basins. Place the tin in the oven and bake for about

25 mins or until well risen and a skewer inserted comes out clean. 5. Take the tin out of the oven and, one at a time and holding firmly with a dry tea towel, loosen the sides of each pudding with a round-bladed knife. Turn out onto 8 warmed dessert plates, or arrange on a platter. Serve hot with cream or ice cream, if you like.

Instructions 1. Heat oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1. Put the milk, cream, zest and vanilla pod in a saucepan. Gently bring to a simmer, then stir in the caster sugar and rice. 2. Transfer mixture to a shallow ovenproof dish and dot the butter on top. Bake for 30 mins, then stir well and cook for 1 hr more until the pudding is soft and creamy, and a golden skin has formed on top. The depth and type of dish you use will affect the cooking time, so if the pudding seems too loose, return to the oven and check every 10 mins or so. Once cooked, rest for 10 mins before serving.

Volunteers still needed for Covid vaccine clinical trials Volunteers are still needed for clinical trials for the Covid-19 vaccine being developed in Spain, despite the deluge of calls received by the three hospitals involved in the research. Madrid's La Paz and La Princesa hospitals, and the Marqués de Valdecilla in Santander, are taking part in the inoculation creation and are currently at the second phase of development, where the first test vaccines are given to rigorously-selected candidates. A total of 190 are needed in Spain – 40 in Santander and 75 in each of the other two hospitals – out of the 550 taking part in the trials, with the rest being in Germany and The Netherlands. The vaccine is being created for the Belgian pharmaceutical firm Janssen, owned by US-based giant Johnson & Johnson. According to Spain's health minister Salvador Illa, hospitals in the country were oversubscribed within the first 72 hours of putting a call out for volunteers. “It's not usual for a minister to be announcing this type of news – normally, it's a slow process, finding enough candidates,” admits Dr Francisco Abad, head of clinical pharmacology at La Princesa hospital. “The fact that we advised of the recruitment process in a press

conference meant it went off like a bomb and over 500 people called us. “Also, being a pathology that affects society to such a degree, there were loads of people keen to join in and help the research progress.” Not everyone who puts themselves forward will be selected, of course, since they have to undergo an exhaustive health check and their medical records need to be scrutinised; additionally, they have to be available for weekly testing at the hospital concerned. They do not get paid, except out-ofpocket expenses and loss of earnings where applicable. For the trials, healthy adults aged 18 to 55 were needed for one group, and over-65s in good health for the second group, none of whom could have previously tested positive for Covid-19, or be suffering it at the moment. Volunteers have the right to withdraw from the trials at any point, without giving a reason for doing so. Since recruitment started on 31st August, the 18-55 age group, which makes up about two-thirds of those due to receive the vaccine, has been comfortably filled, but a small number are still required for the over-65 group. At the La Princesa hospital, for example, a total of 25 volunteers aged over 65 are

needed, and so far, 19 have been selected. “They have to be completely healthy, and by this age, people do tend to have pre-existing medical conditions, which means they are excluded from the trials,” explains Dr Abad. Scientists say the shortage of over65s is definitely not due to lack of response – far from it – but more because callers' medical histories mean they are not suitable to trial the vaccine. Although the eventual inoculation is intended to be given to as many members of the public as possible and more likely to be used on those with health conditions or above pension age – meaning they will need to be able to tolerate it – at the current clinical trials stage, the aim is to see whether the vaccine is effective, creating sufficient anti-bodies, and that side-effects are minimal, which is why those receiving it have to be in a good physical condition. A vaccine will never, however, reach the clinical trials stage unless and until it is proven to be safe for administration to humans. Researchers still have time, though: They have started vaccinating volunteers already, but plan to continue to do so until 22nd September 22 inclusive, giving them a full week from now to make up the numbers.

Health risks of snoring Virtual Boyfriend I have had an online relationship with a man for two years. We have become very close messaging each other constantly throughout the day, just chatting. He sends me a message about a problems he’s having with his elderly mother (who he cares for 24 hours a day), and I send him messages about coping with my teenage children – stuff like that. He’s always sympathetic and it feels like a normal relationship, however whenever I ask to meet up he says he is away working, or has family problems or some such excuse. I’ve sent him photos of me and my family, and he’s sent me photos of him, but alone. Am I expecting too much to ask for a proper relationship? He lives in my next Town, so I can’t see why we cannot meet up. I asked once where he worked, and he said he wasn’t able to tell me as his work was in private investigation and he couldn’t risk his name becoming public knowledge. I know how it looks, but we talk literally all the time on WhatsApp, and he says he loves me. I think after two years the warning signs here should be clearly written on the wall. The fact that he is reluctant to meet you, should say it all. I think he is probably using you as an emotional crutch, IF indeed he has a mother who depends on him. You also say he has some kind of top secret job, which prevents him from telling you where he works. He lives near you, and yet in two years you have never met up. Ask yourself what kind of relationship this is? Before social media, people met up for dates in person. I think this guy is stringing you along, and you are not in a healthy relationship and should consider ending it. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. At least 37 million adults snore on a regular basis, according to the National Sleep Foundation. But all snoring is not equal: Occasional snoring, due to congestion or a bad sleeping position, is a nuisance. Habitual snoring can disturb your sleep patterns and rob both you and your partner of needed rest. Snoring to the extent that you stop breathing, as in the case of obstructive sleep apnea, is a serious health threat that puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke. How sleep apnea affects your heart Sleep apnea increases the risk of heart attack or death by 30 percent over a four- to five-year period. As the upper airway collapses and oxygen is cut off from the lungs, the body triggers a fight-or-flight response, which decreases blood flow to the heart.

Together these two actions raise blood pressure and, over time, wear out the heart. According to new research presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society, this risk may be greater in women. In the new study, the walls of the heart were enlarged in people who snored or had sleep apnea. Compared to non-snorers, women who snored had bigger changes in their hearts than men. Other health risks and complications Sleep apnea also increases your risk for more immediate problems: • It can lead to sleep deprivation, excessive daytime sleepiness, memory loss and concentration problems, and depression. • It can aggravate other chronic conditions, such as chronic

pain, asthma, and restless legs syndrome. • Driving or operating machinery when you have untreated sleep apnea can be especially dangerous. The severity of your snoring problem can be determined through an overnight sleep study, where machines measure the oxygen saturation of your red blood cells. (Anything below 90 percent saturation is cause for concern.) Depending on the results of these tests, you may be diagnosed with sleep apnea or a similar condition, upper airway resistance syndrome. If you're unsure whether you or your loved one's symptoms warrant immediate attention, then it is always best to see a doctor. The sooner sleep apnea is treated, the less likely you are to suffer health consequences later.

Exercise myths debunked Finding clear, definitive facts about healthy exercise can be difficult. The exercise industry is a multi-billion dollar business, built partially on selling gadgets and supplements to people desperate to lose weight or look attractive. Meanwhile, good workout plans and simple truths lurk in the background waiting for their time to shine. All of this results in lots of misinformation about exercise. Myth 1: No Pain, No Gain While it’s absolutely true that you should push yourself and try to extend the limits of your endurance when you exercise, it’s not true at all that the best workouts are the ones that leave you feeling horrible, sore and beat up the next day. Discomfort is natural, but pain? No way. The idea that exercise should hurt is simply wrong — muscle pain during or following exercise usually suggests an injury. However, some muscle soreness is unavoidable, especially if you are new to exercise. This myth has been debunked by doctors, physical therapists, and researchers of all stripes, but it still persists because most people conflate the idea of pushing themselves to work out harder with pain. It’s important to remember that your workouts should still be challenging, but if you’re experiencing pain, you should stop. In fact, if your workouts hurt, you probably won’t be as motivated to continue them, which is exactly what you want to avoid. Myth 2: Soreness After Exercise Is Caused By Lactic Acid So what is that soreness you get a day or two after working out? It’s called DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness,) and the belief that it’s caused by lactic acid building up in your muscles while you exercise is false. A common belief is that lactic acid build-up in the muscle causes muscle soreness. This is based on the fact that during intense exercise like weight training the muscles make energy for contraction anaerobically (without oxygen), which leads to lactic acid production. This is in contrast to aerobic exercises like walking or jogging that produce energy using oxygen, with little lactic acid build-up. This belief that lactic acid causes DOMS has been shown to be false since any lactic acid that is produced during exercise is cleared shortly after you finish, long before muscle soreness begins. Instead, that soreness is actually

caused by tears in your muscle that occur as you exercise — especially if you’re just starting an exercise regimen: It turns out that strenuous exercise leads to microscopic tears in the muscle, which leads to inflammation and soreness. This sounds bad, but the muscle damage is an important step in the muscle getting bigger and stronger. Your muscles are made up of protein filaments that shorten, leading to a contraction. Essentially, as your body repairs those microscopic tears, you’re building new, healthy and strong muscle tissue. This is also the reason why weight training encourages you to increase the resistance or heaviness of your weights as you get accustomed to one level — it’s only through this process that you actually get stronger and build more muscle. If you want to avoid that soreness, start your exercise program slowly and ramp up over time — don’t do too much before you (and your body) are ready, and don’t feel bad about taking a day off between workouts to recover if you’re too sore. Alternatively, switch up your workouts: skip the weights and go for a run instead, for example. After all, an exercise program that makes you so miserable you’ll quit after a week won’t do you any good in the long run. Myth 3: Effective Exercise Takes Long Hours Getting in shape doesn’t have to take a really long time. However, the fact that it does for most people is arguably a good thing. Let’s be clear: there’s no silver bullet, and there’s no magic method to get in shape quickly, but there’s a great deal of new research that shows a healthy exercise regimen doesn’t mean spending hours at the gym every single day. Here’s the catch: yes, there’s an easier way to do this that requires less time, but you’ll need to up the intensity of your workouts in order to benefit. The process is called High Intensity Interval Training, a great way to cut down on the length of your workouts and get results in less time, but it requires more effort. If you have an hour to spare every day, use it instead of killing yourself cramming your exercise into a half-hour. If you can handle a super-intense half-hour workout, go for it. Myth 4: You Need a Sports Drink When Exercising This is one of those myths that sprung from an original grain of truth. Sports

drinks are important for improving performance in high-intensity exercise that lasts longer than an hour. Think of a marathon or triathlon. The reason: sports drinks provide water to replace what is lost in sweat and sugar (glucose), the fuel muscles need most in intense exercise. What about low-intensity exercise though, or people who just hit the treadmill for a half-hour every night after work, or bike around town on the weekends? Not necessary at all: For lower intensity or shorter duration exercise sports drinks are not needed. In fact, if you are exercising with the goal of losing weight, the calories in the sports drink you consume might offset the calories you burned during exercise! This is a good point, and one often ignored in the ads for sugary, highcalorie vitamin drinks and energy drinks that make you think you need them if you’re planning to hit the gym at all. Those drinks are highly beneficial to the people who need them, and they have their place, but for most people doing moderate exercise, water will do. Myth 5: Stretching Before Exercise Will Prevent Injury This particular myth is contentious. There are pro and anti-stretching arguments, with staunch support on both sides, but the confusion about stretching comes down to the fact that many confuse “stretching” with “warming

up”. It’s very important to warm up before strenuous exercise, and warming up can prevent injury, but stretching specifically has been shown to at best have little benefit. Make sure you warm up properly before you begin a workout, possibly even include some stretches to limber up and boost your flexibility, but leave the long stretch-sessions to those hours at your desk instead. Myth 6: Working Out Will Only Build Muscle, Not Help Lose Weight Frankly, most people who start exercising won’t see much immediate weight loss, unless everything else in their lifestyle is already optimal. And sadly, because many people don’t see that initial benefit, they believe that exercise is worthless and diet is where it’s at. This is a common misconception that just isn’t true. It is based partly on research that shows that people who try to lose weight by exercise only lose less weight that people who do diet only or diet + exercise. The reason for this is that is relatively easier to cut back on the calories you eat than it is to burn the same number of calories through exercise. For many people, you may get a bigger bang for your buck by changing your diet, but the belief that exercise increases muscle mass and therefore will make you

gain weight instead of lose it just isn’t the case. Exercise, especially strength training, can increase muscle mass. Some people believe that the added muscle mass leads to weight gain, not weight loss. While exercise could lead to an increase in muscle it is unlikely that someone dieting to lose weight would experience this. In fact, when most people lose weight they lose both fat and muscle. If anything, exercise would help maintain muscle and promote fat loss. The decrease in muscle mass during weight loss can lead to a reduction in resting metabolic rate, which is part of the reason that people tend to regain weight following a diet. By reducing the loss of muscle, exercise may help maintain metabolic rate and prevent weight regain. Remember, your weight isn’t the beall-and-end-all of your health. When combined with diet, exercise can be a powerful combination to help you lose weight, but also live a healthier life. Myth 7: Exercise Will Help Me Lose Weight Quickly The inverse of the previous myth, this is the one that usually turns people off exercise entirely when they spend hours working out and don’t see the results they were hoping for. The problem is that exercise can help you lose weight, but it’s not the direct “calories in less than calories burned therefore weight lost” oversimplification that’s so often repeated. For example, walking a mile in an hour will burn about 100 calories. Sitting in a chair for the same period of time will burn 60 calories. The real weight-loss benefits to exercise come from the eventual ramp-up of tolerance for intensity and duration of exercise that you achieve once you get started. As you exercise, you’ll start walking faster, or maybe running, or perhaps you’ll walk longer and spend more time walking. If you walk or run five miles instead of one, you’ll burn 500 calories, and while it will take longer, the weight loss benefits scale better over time than sitting at home, so as you train, you’ll lose more weight. It’s also important to note that — as we mentioned earlier — you shouldn’t confuse the weight loss benefits of exercise with the health benefits of exercise, which you feel almost immediately.

Tesla driver found asleep at wheel of selfdriving car doing 150km/h Police officers in Alberta, Canada have charged a man with speeding and dangerous driving after he was found to be asleep at the wheel. The man was ‘driving’ in his selfdriving Tesla car – but instead of driving, he was fast asleep as the car hurtled down the highway at 150 kilometres an hour. The incident took place in July but only came to light last Thursday when Royal Canadian Mounted police revealed that they had received complaints that a Tesla Model S was speeding Tesla Model S down the highway near to the Alberta town of Ponoka. Meanwhile in the US, officials are investigating a number of fatal crashes involving the “autopilot” function, including one in which the driver was reportedly using the feature to play on his phone. Royal Canadian Mounted police superintendent Gary Graham said in a statement “Although manufacturers of new vehicles have built-in safeguards to prevent drivers from taking advantage of the new safety systems in vehicles, those systems are just that – supplemental safety systems. They are not self-driving systems. They still come with the responsibility of driving.”

More than 300 deaths caused by distractions For the fourth year in a row, distractions continue to be the leading cause of fatal traffic accidents. Specifically, in 2019, distraction appears as a concurrent factor in 28% of accidents with fatalities, with 359 deaths recorded. As a result of these alarming figures, the DGT launched an awareness campaign last week which aimed at educating drivers of the dangers of distractions whilst driving, enforcing the law as necessary. The campaign was part of the annual calendar of special actions provided by TISPOL (International Traffic Police Organisation) and in which the DGT participates. In addition to the campaign running in Spain, it simultaneously took place in many European countries. The Guardia Civil spearheaded the campaign on the main road network, assisted by the regional and local police in urban areas. As part of the campaign, the 12 helicopters, 3 drones and 216 fixed cameras installed on the roads were used to carry out surveillance by traffic officers. As a novelty, this campaign also featured the 15 unmarked vans which the Guardia Civil traffic patrols are now using, which, because of their dimensions, allow the officers to gain a better view of the occupants of vehicles, thus enabling them to check on the use of mobile phones whilst driving, and ensuring that seat belts are correctly worn, for example. The most frequent types of accidents due to distractions are leaving the road, head-on collisions, collision with the vehicle in front or being run over. To avoid distractions, it is important to consider the following key factors:

Before getting behind the wheel: Sleep well, do not drink alcohol or consume drugs, do not eat large meals, take care of the intake of certain medications. On the way: It is better not to smoke, if you feel drowsy, stop. Maintain a comfortable temperature: 21 or 22 degrees is an advisable temperature. Watch out for the mobile: It is an important source of distractions. Use only for emergencies and with the car stopped. It is recommended to activate the "car mode" in those devices that include it.

Radio / MP3: Handling them distracts us, systems that are operated directly from the wheel are advisable. Programming stations and CDs before the trip is a good option. Traveling with GPS: Trying to program a route while traveling is very dangerous. It must be done beforehand. Mobile: The King of Distractions One of the main reasons for driver distraction is the use of a mobile phone while driving. Its use multiplies by four the risk of suffering an accident and the risk is comparable to driving with excess alcohol. Using a mobile phone whilst driving means taking your eyes off the road for a

certain time in which you travel without the driver having control of the vehicle, since the attention is focused on the mobile. According to the latest Distractions report prepared by RACE, 96% of surveyed users admit to having seen someone talking on their mobile while driving (80% regularly) and 76% claim to use it without speaking, only manipulating or looking at it. The report details that in the case of social networks, 18% of drivers admit to having used social networks while driving, of which 12% do so regularly. This percentage increases to 17% among young people between 18 and 24 years old. Other factors that cause distraction Sleep and fatigue are two risk factors that are very unknown and at the same time highly implicated in road accidents: leaving the road, or certain invasions of the opposite contiguous lane are very frequent types of accidents due to these factors. Smoking and driving: lighting a cigarette takes an average of 4 seconds. At a speed of 100 km / h, in that time we will have travelled 113 meters. According to the conclusions of various research studies, smoking while driving multiplies the risk of an accident by 1.5. What does the law say? The Road Safety Law considers it a serious offense to use, when driving, a mobile phone device, GPS navigators or any other communication system, as well as headphones or other devices that reduce the mandatory permanent attention to driving. These infractions involve a financial penalty of 200 euro and the loss of 3 points.

Tunnels and underpasses Traffic laws must be strictly adhered to in tunnels or underpasses on account of the increased risk factors involved in this type of road route, with attention specifically to such matters as using headlights, observing speed and safe distance requirements and not stopping, parking, changing direction or reversing. When approaching most tunnels, a blue rectangular sign provides some key information about the tunnel, such as the name and the length, as well as details about emergency help points within. The speed limit in tunnels is controlled with the R-301 mandatory maximum speed limit sign (a red circle with the speed limit in the centre), although many also have an advisory maximum speed limit, indicated by the S-7 blue square with white numbers. Before entering the tunnel, we will also see the R-413 sign, a blue circle with a headlight pictogram in the centre, telling us that it is always mandatory for us to use headlights. There may be other signs on the entry to tunnels such as the R306 which prohibits heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg from overtaking. Some tunnels have indicators above the carriageway which shows if the lane is open or closed. This is sometimes by

means of a standard red or green traffic light and sometimes by means of a green arrow or red cross. These indication signs must always be observed. All signs, whether fixed or temporary, visual, or audible, must always be adhered to. In tunnels or underpasses where the traffic flows in both directions, overtaking is prohibited, unless an additional lane or lanes are provided for this. A safe distance must always be maintained from the vehicle in front, with a minimum of 100 metres being required between each vehicle, the equivalent of a 4 second gap. Some tunnels have markings on the lanes to assist in keeping this distance. For those with no markings the four second gap can be monitored by counting the time between the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed point and the time it takes your vehicle to pass that same place. In the case of vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3,500 kg, the safe distance is increased to at least 150 metres or a minimum interval of at least 6 seconds. Tunnels of some length will have pedestrian exits and help points which are for use in emergencies only. The exits are indicated by the universal emergency exit signs of a pictogram of a figure about to leave a door, and often accompanied by the words “Salida” or “Salida de Emergencia”. The location of the closest emergency point is indicated by arrows on the wall of the tunnel. In the event of an emergency access point being in both directions, often a larger arrow will indicate the direction to the nearest emergency point or exit, which may be in front or behind. In the event of being involved in an

emergency in a tunnel, you must: Switch off the engine, switch on emergency hazard lights and leave your vehicle lights on. If the emergency makes it impossible for the vehicle to continue, try to steer the vehicle to the area reserved for emergencies in the direction of travel, such as the hard shoulder if available, or an emergency layby. In the absence of these features, you must try to stop your vehicle as close as possible to the right side of the edge of the roadway. Use your emergency triangles to indicate your vehicle is creating a hazard. All vehicle occupants must leave the vehicle and proceed to the nearest evacuation emergency exit. In case of fire, the driver must make every effort to ensure vehicles do not block the path of the emergency vehicles attending. Turn off the ignition, leaving the key, and leaving the doors open. All vehicle occupants must leave by the nearest available exit in the opposite direction to the fire. Hopefully, our passage through the tunnel will be without incident and as we leave the tunnel, we will see more signs. As well as the S-6 sign indicating the end of the tunnel and subsequent restrictions, we sometimes a change in the speed limit but always a reminder about our headlights. This S-24 sign is different to the R-413 as it is a blue rectangle which displays a pictogram of the headlights along with a question mark. Whereas it is mandatory to switch lights on when entering a tunnel, it is not necessarily mandatory to switch them off, as it could be night time or during a period of poor visibility, so this sign is an informative version reminding us to check if we need to continue with our headlights illuminated.

SMGS at Las Colinas Linda Rennie Memorial Trophy Played for since 2016, the Linda Rennie Memorial Trophy has become part of the society’s annual events. Meant to have been played previously but delayed because of COVID, we were delighted to be able to fit it in on the penultimate day of Captain Phil de Lacy’s reign. Whether it was the trophy’s standing, the fact that we were back at Colinas after a long period away, or that a lot of members are now back for the autumn and winter, turnout was the highest it has been since lockdown back in March. Forty-six players turned out to find a course in excellent condition, but set up very, very long apart, somewhat ironically, from the two shortest par threes (holes 7 and 10) which were shortened even further than normal. Some initial confusion was caused by stroke indexes having changed since SMGS last visited, and a few souls surely thought they had two shorts on the first, when in fact they only had one. With the tee box on that opening hole being further back than anybody could remember, two shots for all would have been welcome! In contrast, the second, now stroke index one, had a tee brought forward. However, it remains a monster of a hole with a green far too postage stamp. Houses continue to sprout up around much of the course, and those suffering, principally bronze and silver category players, may well have turned their thoughts to what a few million

(37) and 1st, Andy McDonald with 39 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Property Shop): Hole 5 Kyrre Skarsmoen, Hole 7 Mike Fearnehough, Hole 10 Andy McDonald, Hole 14 Andy McDonald, Hole 17 Lars Kristiansen Abacus: Haydn Williams

Our thanks go to all Las Colinas staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at Vistabella for the much looked forward to Captain’s Day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 711032859.

Ruby’s GS might buy you. And whether you would really want it! Some houses are that large that they may well have their own pitch and putt areas inside the buildings. Getting on to the golf, the results by category clearly indicated how the course was set up. Nine players in Gold (lowest handicappers) beat 30 points, three in Silver, and none in Bronze. Andy McDonald took the Linda Rennie Trophy with an impressive 39 points playing off of eight. Only recently returned Russell Bailey got near with 37. Nobody else managed to beat their handicap. Andy also took 2 nearest the pins, and the society’s oldest playing member Mike Fearnehough another. Nice to see Mike in the frame again. Following prize giving the AGM was held. Due to social distancing tables

were well spaced out on the gorgeous clubhouse terrace with a limit on numbers at each. Those Committee members having to throw their voices to be heard by all may well have been somewhat hoarse Thursday morning! The day’s results were the following: 2020 Linda Rennie Memorial Trophy: Andy McDonald Bronze Category: 5th Steve Hart (27 on CB), 4th Alan MacDonald (27 on CB), 3rd Mick Seymour (28), 2nd Norman Padmore (30 on CB) and 1st, with the same score, Lee Eastman. Silver Category: 5th Kyrre Skarsmoen (29), 4th Brian Mulligan (30), 3rd Phil de Lacy (32 on CB), 2nd Roger Webb (33) and first, Keith Little with 35 points. Gold Category: 5th Darren Strugnell (32 on CB), 4th Michael Lausch (34), 3rd Lars Kristiansen (36), 2nd Russell Bailey

With all that we have had to contend with lately, the weather also chipped in on Friday with some unwanted (by golfers anyway) rain, although it was not prolonged it was heavy enough to soak all 32 players who were out on the course for our Trophy game at Vistabella. However this did not deter some golfers from returning some very good scores. Winners on the day were as follows : Nearest the pins on the par 3's were Nigel Wright, Michelle Evans and Peter List, nearest the pin in two was Terry Brooker. The silver division winner was Andrew Jones with 38 points, second was George Marshall Deane with 33 pts, third was Roger Van Herck with 32 pts. Gold and overall winner was Peter list with a handicap cutting 40 points score for someone who plays off of 9., second was Walter Millar with 39 pts, third was Michelle Evans with 35 pts .

Despite the weather the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we headed back to O Brien's bar for our presentation, the prizes were provided by Roger and Sonia Van Herck who kindly sponsored the day. Many thanks to them both for their generosity. Our next game is at Font del Llop, for any further information email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT PART I could spell the end of his United career.

■ CHRIS DARWEN

West Ham United really, really, really want/need Burnley’s James Tarkowski but you can understand why the central defender won’t be that keen even if the powers that be at the Athletic Stadium will most likely quadruple his wages.

chris@costablancapeople.com

So, in the week where Macclesfield Town needed a £600k bail out, Tottenham Hotspur got a £600k a week Bale in. Gareth Bale is returning to the Premier League as the football world wonders what Spurs have actually signed given nobody has really seen Bale play professional football for the last couple of years. Mind you, we’re not likely to see him just yet either as his medical unveiled the fact that Bale has a minor knee injury - you may as well start as you mean to go on eh, Gareth? Bale flew into London with left-back Sergio Reguillon who has also signed for Spurs in a £25m+ deal - Reguillon, an attacking full-back, would have done well to have had a quick chat with Luke Shaw before putting pen to paper. There won’t be many people in the world expecting Jose to have two full-backs that like to bomb on so give it two months before he has broken Reguillon’s soul and killed him pubically for defensive naivety. Mourinho now has too many players, apparently - so many players, in fact, that Dele Alli can’t get in an 18-man squad. PSG and Inter reckon they can find space for him in theirs, so that’s a rumour that will rumble on until October 5th. It is thought that Real

Madrid just about stopped laughing that Spurs had offered them Alli instead of a £20m loan fee just in time to sign off the Bale deal. Not to be deterred, Daniel Levy let PSG that they are welcome to him. Jose is believed to want to shred eight more players between now and the window shutting - which probably means someone could pick up a Ryan Sessegnon shaped bargain too. Danny Ings won’t have helped Southampton’s cause to keep him out of Tottenham’s clutches by scoring twice but, given that he would cost a lot now, it is more likely Mourinho will end up with Troy Deeney, Bas Dost or, most likely, nobody else. Liverpool got in and out of last week’s market quickly and efficiently signing Champions League winning Thiago for £27m and Wolves’ Diogo Jota for £41m.

It is this kind of speed and efficiency that reminds us that Ed Woodward still rules the roost at Manchester United United started the week believing their solution to not getting Jadon Sancho was getting Gareth Bale. And moments after it became clear he was off to Spurs, United were being linked to Sami Khedira, Ivan Perisic and Douglas Costa. I, for one, didn’t realise Khedira was seeing out his career as a pacy, direct, skilled winger. Still, at least United’s week ended strongly - they certainly didn’t spend the weekend getting the runaround from a pacy, direct, skilled winger that they failed to get the best out of when he used to be their pacy, direct, skilled winger. And Patrice, you know they never actually met, right? Even Luke Shaw has gone on record begging Woodward to strengthen the squad, presumably not realising that

Arsenal need to raise more than the £20m they conned out of Aston Villa for Emi Martinez if they want to sign Houssam Aouar. If only someone would sign that problem child Guendozi. Or one of the 12 defenders they no longer need. Or, more likely, they need Barcelona to follow through on their threat to take Hector Bellerin home. Leicester are on the verge of going Under - by bringing in the Roma inverted winger. Cengiz is Caglar’s best mate - so that’s nice. They also need to get Wesley Fofana sorted ASAP otherwise Wes Morgan might get wheeled out more than anyone really thinks is wise. Wolves didn’t let the Jota money burn a hole in their pocket for very long - needing to maintain the Portuguese majority at the club, Jorge Mendes, sorry I mean Nuno, moved for Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo. Finally, Chelsea are still working on the theory that anyone is going to be better than Kepa so the £22m deal for Edouard Mendy is likely to go through.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT PART II Well, that’s another quiet weekend of Premier League football over and done with. Move along, nothing of note to comment on here. The thing you have to understand about Kepa is that he might be rubbish at using his hands but he is great with his feet, OK? Yeah, about that. How quickly can that Mendy guy be available? Chelsea had already made life a little more difficult when Andreas Christensen opted for the classic rugby tackle when being outrun by Sadio Mane on the stroke of half-time. The ironic moment in the VAR reversal was that Christensen originally received a yellow as it was believed the onrushing Kepa meant it wasn’t a goalscoring opportunity - history clearly tells us that anything football related near the Spanish goalkeeper is a goalscoring opportunity. Ten minutes into the second half and the game was done - Liverpool’s famed front three combining for Mane to head home minutes before Kepa assisted the Senegal international’s second. At the other end, Alisson reminded everyone the difference an actual goalkeeper can make stopping Jorginho’s hop-skip-and-a-jump penalty. It might be the first time he has missed one in the Premier League but hands up if, as a neutral, you enjoyed that ridiculous run-up finally

failing? As King Kloppo alluded to ahead of the game, Chelsea might have spent all that new money but Liverpool have what really counts as true class: Old Mane. Jose Mourinho mentioned during the week, and then before kick-off and then probably again at full-time, that he has too many players at Tottenham. Therefore, he’ll be relieved that Gareth Bale has turned up with a knee injury and that Dele Alli is clearly suddenly out of favour. That will make choosing eleven each week much easier. Despite all these trials and tribulations, Tottenham put in the almost perfect modern-Mourinho performance on Sunday against Southampton. Granted, Southampton made it incredibly easy for them by setting up camp on the halfway line and just letting Son run in behind every single time - but still, a 5-2 win is a 5-2 win. Harry Kane joined an exclusive list of players including Dennis Bergkamp, Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla and, er, Emmanuel Adebayor by setting up Son’s four goals. And, if Sonny had been able to stay onside more often, Spurs could have had eight. Danny Ings didn’t do much to make Jose look elsewhere for his Kane backup, but the way Southampton were awarded their penalty was

nothing other than weird. It’s great to see that the referees are now using their pitchside monitors, but when they look at something themselves and still make an idiotic decision surely questions have to be asked? There was a lot to like about Crystal Palace at Old Trafford - namely their kit and Wilfried Zaha. For the first time in their long history, Palace have now won their first two top flight matches of a new season. They were helped just a teeny-weeny bit by another oddball handball penalty decision (also given after a referee has watched it on his pitchside monitor) and by David de Gea stealing at least an inch-and-a-half when saving Ayew’s initial spot-kick. I mean, after that penalty they didn’t deserve a second go. The Palace social media account asked their fans to describe Zaha in one word post-match. Given that performance, and the fact the transfer window is still open, I’d say ‘available’ sums it up. West Bromwich Albion need to do more than just score worldies if they want to stay up this season. Grady Diangana and Matheus Peireira each scored left-footed screamers of differing styles and went home emptyhanded as Everton scored five of their own. DLC, J-Rod and RichieRich are forming quite the front three at Goodison Park and Rodriguez oozed so much class

that Kieron Gibbs clearly didn’t fancy chasing his shadow for the second half. It is yet unclear exactly what Slaven Bilic, a qualified lawyer, thought his case was when approaching the referee at half time, but he’ll have a couple of socially-distant games in the stands as a result of his on-pitch outburst.

the leftovers when it comes to PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL LIVE ON THE BBC, but I think we can all agree that Burnley vs Leicester wasn’t the most glamorous of offerings on paper. Yet, it perfectly maintained the ‘defending is not quite back in fashion yet’ mentality of the matches that went before it.

Given the penalties already mentioned in today’s column, could someone explain to me how they were given and the one against Arsenal’s Gabriel wasn’t? Because they are making it up as they go along, you say? Makes sense. Not that it would have changed the outcome of the match, in all likelihood. Arsenal might have scored their winner late after West Ham chose the 85th minute as the moment to down defensive tools, but don’t let the final score tell you anything other than West Ham will be hoping that Fulham and WBA remain as Championship class as already demonstrated and that there’s at least one other incompetent team that appears as the season unfolds.

Chris Wood scored the most Chris Wood of Chris Wood goals, virtually throwing James Justin into the empty stands whilst simultaneously taking the ball on his chest and finishing multitasking at it’s finest. Justin might have scored Leicester’s third, but the way Jimmy Dunne brushed him aside for Burnley’s second suggested Brendan might want to get him on a Ready Brek and spinach diet to get some strength in the kid.

We can get an indication into how bad West Ham might be this season given the side that swept them aside last weekend, Newcastle, were stripped naked and spanked by visitors Brighton 3-0. Having spent the first 25 minutes watch a jet-heeled Lamptey run him ragged, most of us can understand why Alain Saint-Maxim ended up ‘injured’ and subbed off before half-time. I’m not suggesting that the BBC get

Leeds United feel like a nailed on 3.5+ goals bet at the moment. Having lost 43 on the opening day against the champions, they treated us all to another seven-goal thriller by seeing off the defensively-hopeless Fulham. Helder Costa clearly watched Mo Salah last week and learned to stand still long enough for the ball to land at your feet and Patrick Bamford also caught the eye with a surprisingly clinical performance. It was refreshing to have two penalties awarded that needed no discussion as Koch cocked it up once again. I am wondering if Bielsa knows the English for ‘it doesn’t have to be 4-3 every week, lads’.
