PANDEMIC: One year on People across Spain are reflecting on the past year as the ‘anniversary’ of the first lockdown took place at the weekend. Many took to social media to reflect on the situation this time last year when fear first took hold and many flocked to supermarkets to stock up on food (and in some cases, toilet rolls). Masks and hand sanitizer were scarce and expensive and

supermarket shelves were alarmingly empty at times. Around the 14th March 2020, the first spontaneous rounds of applause for health workers began at 8pm every evening. In just days, tens of thousands of people paused every night to applaud and show their appreciation to those on the front line. It was the beginning, for most of us, of home

confinement (and the joy of home schooling for those with children), for the threat of being fined for being outside on the street without just cause. Remember the case of the dog owners who loaned their four legged friend to neighbours so they too could go for a stroll? It has been a year in which we quickly got used to wearing masks, cleaning hands and tolerated staying apart (something many of us will never fully get used to). A year in which businesses have suffered, loved ones have been lost and lives have been completely changed. As the Valencian Community continues to de-escalate restrictions, this week we will see bars and restaurants allowed to open 30% of their interiors and 100% of terraces – something welcomed this week as St Patrick’s Day falls on Wednesday 17th March. The much loved Cabo Roig parade will not take place, but plenty of bars on the Southern Costa Blanca are advertising ‘socially distanced’ festivities instead.

Good news for fitness fans too as gyms can once again reopen and municipal sports facilities can be used by individuals and clubs. It is important to remember that despite the apparent relaxation of the regulations, there are restrictions still in place in the Valencian Community. The perimeter closure remains in place. That is, it is not possible to enter or leave the Valencian Community except in exceptional circumstances. The night time curfew is still in place so citizens must stay at home from 10pm to 6am. Another of the restrictions still in place is the prohibition of gatherings in homes. A maximum of four people are allowed to meet together in public (the same applies to a group meeting at a bar or restaurant). The closing time of bars and restaurants is still 6pm and non essential commercial businesses are allowed open until 8pm, at 50% of their permitted interior capacity. Pharmacies and supermarkets allowed to open later.

Torrevieja announces two year plan for beach management Torrevieja town hall this week announced a multi-year contract for 2021 and 2022, with a total investment of over €1.8m. The contract for the Management and Control of Access to the Beaches of Torrevieja was approved and will look after sanitary measures that came about due to the COVID-19 situation. The initiative was announced by councillor Federico Alarcón who revealed that the object of the contract is the provision of teams of workers to carry out control and surveillance of accesses and exits

to the beaches of Torrevieja, as well as the control on the actual beach itself in order that the safety distance is respected at all times. The scheme includes three working teams: a team of personnel for the control and surveillance of beaches, a team for the cleaning of public toilets at beaches and promenades as well as the footbaths located on all Torrevieja beaches. Also included is a team which, prior to the opening of the beaches, and after closure, will assemble and disassemble the equipment

which marks out the individual ‘plots’ for beachgoers. Councillor Alarcón has announced that the service will be divided into three periods: 1. Low season 1 of Easter, from March 27 to April 5 (10 days). 2. Low season 2, from June 15 to 30 and from September 1 to 15 (30 days). 3. High season, from July 1 to August 31 (62 days). The beach control hours will from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the more popular beaches and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., on those considered less busy.

Local Police recover two stolen vehicles in one day San Fulgencio Local Police recovered two vehicles that had been stolen in the town. The events occurred on Tuesday morning after a robbery at a shop in the commercial centre next to the N-332. The alleged perpetrator managed to flee the scene on foot. However, several witnesses alerted police to a suspected getaway car parked nearby. Thanks to the description offered by witnesses, one of the patrols that had been dispatched to the scene managed to locate and immobilize the car. After proceeding to identify both the driver and

the vehicle itself, the agents detected that the car had been reported as stolen. Officers proceeded to arrest the suspect and had the car towed to the municipal depot for it to be delivered to its owner. On the same day in the afternoon, during a routine patrol, officers noticed a vehicle parked suspiciously in one of the streets of La Marina urbanization. After running the car’s registration number through the system, it was detected that this car had also been reported stolen. A police spokesperson said, “These actions have been the result of intensifying

Wifi4EU sees expansion of free connections in public spaces EU initiative, WiFi4EU, promotes free access to Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens in public spaces including parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centres and museums in municipalities throughout Europe. The WiFi4EU initiative, which has a budget of 120 million euro, provides municipalities with the opportunity to apply for vouchers to the value of €15,000. The vouchers can then be used to install Wi-Fi equipment in public spaces that are not already equipped with a free Wi-Fi hotspot. President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, said “for everyone to benefit from connectivity it should not matter where you live or

how much you earn. So today we propose to provide every town and every city in Europe with free wireless Internet access around the main centres of public life.” The individual municipalities that receive the vouchers will decide on the "public life centres" where the WiFi4EU wireless access points will be installed. In addition, these vouchers can also be used to partially finance a higher value project. The funds can be used to buy new equipment or renew old equipment by replacing it with newer and better quality equipment. Over 500 towns in Spain have already successfully applied for the finances to install free public Wifi including the likes of Los Montesinos, Elche and Orihuela.

Death of Mary Priddle, founding member of Crescendo International Choir Mary Priddle, a founding member of Crescendo International Choir, passed away after a heart attack. She died Monday March 8 in Plymouth, England.Mary had just returned to her native England for health-related reasons in January and was living near her daughter Kelly. Mary started Crescendo International Choir in 2004 after moving to Torrevieja. Previous choir director Chas Smith had this to say about Mary. “Without Mary there would have been no Crescendo. It was Mary's idea and I remember going to Mary's home that first time when we discussed setting up a new mixed voice choir. She did all the hard work making it possible to let the city of Torrevieja know what was happening and put adverts in the papers for a pianist and sorted out where to rehearse. All I did was just wave my arms and sort out the music we would sing.” Back in December 2021, Crescendo Choir members sang Christmas carols outdoors at Rincon de Miguel restaurant

in Los Montesinos. It was on that occasionthat we thanked Mary for all she had done to make Crescendo Choir happen and gave her a gift and flowers. Mary was very touched. That was the last time most of us saw her. Since the pandemic started one year ago, choir members have been unable to gather to mourn the loss of several members and sing the Blessing of Aaron together to say goodbye. The words of the blessing are as follows: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon youand be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

New domestic flights within Spain Europe’s largest low-cost airline Ryanair is introducing its biggest ever Spansh domestic flight schedule starting this July. The airline is also adding three new routes from the United Kingdom to Greece. Ryanair says that the UK’s success in getting so many of its citizens vaccinated for COVID-19 has given consumers confidence that they will be able to go on holiday. Coupled with this was an announcement just last week by Greek tourism minister Harry Theoharis who said Greece would open its borders to anyone who has been vaccinated, has antibodies, or tests negative for the coronavirus. UK passengers can now book a sunshine getaway to Santorini, Zakynthos, and Preveza from Stansted. On top of these three new routes, Ryanair has added additional flights from Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Southend, and Stansted to Corfu and Rhodes. When speaking about the airlines’ Greek flights Ryanair’s Director of Commercial, Jason McGuinness, said, “We are delighted to offer even greater choice, more routes and extra flights to Greece for our UK customers this summer. The UK Government’s highly successful vaccination program gives customers the confidence that travel will be possible this summer. UK consumers can now choose from over 20 routes (including three announced today) and 5 extra weekly flights at low fares to some of the most popular summer holiday destinations in Greece.

Mindful that Covid restrictions change regularly, Ryanair is now allowing up to two free flight date changes on all bookings should plans change. Passengers can now book flights for a break, knowing that if they need to postpone or change their travel dates,

they can do so with a ‘Zero Change Fee’ until the end of October 2021. Domestic Spanish flights Many holidaymakers who visit Spain do not often realize that those of us living here also enjoy the country’s beautiful Mediterranean beaches and love taking a summer holiday around Spain just like everyone else. With the COVID-19 vaccination programme underway, Ryanair expects domestic travel within Spain to soar during the summer. Starting July 1, 2021, Ryanair will offer Span based passengers more choices than ever before when it comes to business trips or holidaying in Spain. Summer 2021 will see Ryanair offering 800 weekly flights to 21 destinations that include nine new routes: Alicante – Ibiza 3 x per week

Alicante – Menorca 3 x per week Mallorca – Zaragoza 3 x per week Menorca – Seville 3 x per week Mallorca – Tenerife Norte 2 x per week Malaga – Menorca 2 x per week Alicante – Lanzarote 2 x per week Mallorca – Santander 2 x per week Fuerteventura – Valencia 1 x per week Menorca – Valencia 7 x per week Malaga – Valencia 3 x per week Mallorca – Valencia 14 x per week Gran Canaria – Valencia 3 x per week Seville – Valencia 5 x per week Malaga – Santiago 6 x per week Ibiza – Seville 5 x per week Lanzarote – Seville 3 x per week Expected surge in domestic travel When speaking about Ryanair’s increase in domestic Spanish flights, McGuinness said: “As Spain’s leading airline, we are delighted to offer even greater choice for our Spanish customers this summer, with nine more domestic routes launched today. We are thrilled to continue delivering growth to the regions and promoting connectivity between Spain’s mainland and the Canary and Balearic Islands, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.” McGuinness added that vaccination programs are due to accelerate in the coming months. So, with pent-up domestic and international demand likely to grow this summer, the airline is confident new routes to Spain’s most popular leisure locations will attract strong interest from its Spanish passengers.

Imminent threat feared to Cala Mosca There is mounting evidence of a manoeuvre being prepared to rush through approval by Orihuela Town Hall of a revised plan to enable building of 1500 new homes on Cala Mosca, the last remaining unspoilt green land on the coast of Oriheula Costa. The latest move has been denounced by local political party C.L.A.R.O. and its ally Cambiemos. By circumventing procedures and sidelining serious objections, they fear that the head of Urban Planning and leader of the Ciudadanos party is preparing a quick vote on a modified plan which would give a final green light to the developer to go ahead with the construction of 1500 new homes on this last stretch of natural green land on the 16 kilometre coast of Orihuela Costa the rest of which is already covered by bricks and concrete This environmentally and socially destructive project has been effectively blocked since its initial approval in 2007, as a result of a petition with over 7000 signatures which C.L.A.R.O. presented to the European Parliament in 2010. The European Parliament paralysed construction until the project complied with European Union environmental legislation. Modifications in the plan to safeguard two protected species were eventually made by the developer and agreed by the Valencia government. In the meantime, the project has been confronted with other objections most notably by the central government’s traffic department which issued a report opposing the plan to build 1500 new

homes whose estimated 5,000 residents would have to exit Cala Mosca directly on to the N332 road which is already saturated in normal summer times. The report pointed out that this massive increase in traffic would be accompanied by pollution and noise detrimental to the health of Orihuela Costa’s population. Another major objection has been raised concerning the impact of the mega development, involving an increase in the population of Oriheula Costa of between 15-20 percent, on the already nearly collapsed sewage system. After years of delays the Ciudadanos councillors in Orihuela have put together a plan to address this problem but it is widely criticised as being inadequate to deal even with the existing population. Their plan would rely on diverting surplus sewage to neighbouring municipalities. But with their increase in summer populations it is hardly credible they would accept. There are other objections to this mega development and its impact on the environment and health of Orihuela Costa’s population including the potential shortage of drinking water. But of course, the one huge consequence which the Orihuela municipal government have shown that they disregard completely is the consequence for basic services such as street cleaning and rubbish removal, maintenance of streets and pavements and parks and gardens arising from a 15-20 percent increase in the population of Orihueal Costa. Year after year approval is given for new construction projects without a

corresponding increase in the basic services for which residents pay their taxes. But never has a project of this magnitude been contemplated. It is entirely predictable that if the governing PP and Ciudadanos coalition government go ahead and propose approval of the Cala Mosca building project, there will be no provision for a corresponding increase in the provision of basic services never mind an increase to meet existing deficiencies. For these reasons C.L.A.R.O. and Cambiemos are determined to reveal the latest attempt by the present

government coalition to ignore the serious objections which have been raised to this environmentally destructive project with its negative urban and social consequences in the interests of pleasing a developer in a hurry to overcome years of delay imposed by popular reaction. The circumstances for this furtive attempt to approve the project no matter what the cost must seem favourable with people’s attention centred on Covid and limitations on social activity. But this is a project with such harmful consequences that it must be opposed by all legitimate means.

Unfortunately, the blaze spread to the inside of the property and burnt through a bathroom and the living room. Luckily the rest of the house was only affected by smoke. The fire also destroyed all the garden furniture and the cypress trees planted on the property. Fortunately, the butane cylinders that were stored outside did not explode, but they did catch light. Firefighters from the Provincial Consortium dashed to the blaze with a command unit in tow, which included a salvage van, a ladder car, a sergeant, an officer and six firefighters. No injuries to people were reported.

Bronze Age burial site in Murcia hints at female rulers A tomb unearthed at the La Almoloya archaeological site in Murcia has prompted archaeologists to reconsider long held assumptions about women’s power in Bronze Age societies in Europe. The team of researchers found a collection of exquisite artefacts at women’s graves at the site. The burial site has been described by archaeologists as one of the most lavish Bronze Age burial sites ever discovered in Europe. The findings have sparked speculation that the women of the El Argar society were among the rulers. The El Argar society – among the first to use bronze – flourished on the Iberian peninsula until around 1550BC. A team of researchers have been on site in Murcia since around 2013 and have made a number of significant findings. The most astonishing was published last week in archaeological journal, Antiquity. The research indicates fascinating findings of a man and a woman buried in a large ceramic jar, both of whom died close together in the mid-17th century BC. The couple had at least one child together - an infant discovered buried beneath a nearby building was a genetic match to both of them. Buried with them were 29 valuable objects, nearly all of them most likely belonging to the female, believed to be between 25 and 30 years of age. “It’s like everything she touched had silver on it,” said Cristina Rihuete of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Among the exquisitely crafted items were bracelets, rings and a rare type of crown, known as a diadem. In total 230 grams of silver were found at the burial site – an amount that at the time would have been worth the equivalent of 938 daily wages. The powerful role women may have played in the El Argar society is also reflected in other finds at the Murcia site; similar diadems were found at four other female burial sites while gravesites of women were later used for the burials of elite warriors, suggesting these sites were viewed as places of high status. What was unique about this recent find was the location of the site beneath what could be the first Bronze Age palace unearthed in the region. Archaeologists believe that as the building would have been used for political purposes, it could be that the woman’s power stemmed from politics, explained Rihuete. Men were probably the warriors of society, as indicated by the swords found at several male burial sites, suggests Roberto Risch of Autonomous University of Barcelona. “Clearly they control the means of violence and they are probably behind the expansion of El Argar.” El Argar society thrived from 2200BC onwards. It was a highly organised society with a wealthy elite that was probably sustained by some sort of tax system. “In western Europe there was nothing of the like,” explained Risch, indicating at at the time around the rest

of Spain people were living in selfsufficient communities of 50 to 100 people. By the 16th century BC, all of El Argar’s settlements were abandoned, believed to have been racked by internal uprisings. “Shortly after the woman dies, the whole settlement is burned down,” said Risch. “And not until the Greeks and Phoenicians arrive on the Iberian peninsula did we see anything similar, either in architecture or in political dimension.” The mystery woman buried at the Murcia site is thought to have died of tuberculosis. She was placed on her back with her legs bent toward the man. In life, she had a range of congenital anomalies such as a shortened, fused spine and a stunted left thumb. On and around her were sublime silver emblems of wealth and power. Her hair had been fastened with silver spirals, and her silver earlobe plugs -one larger than the other - had silver spirals looped through them. A silver bracelet was near her elbow, and a silver ring was still on her finger. Silver embellished the diamond-shaped ceramic pot placed near her, and triple plates of silver embellished her oakwood awl - a symbol of womanhood. Her most fantastic silver artifact is the impeccably crafted diadem - a headband-like crown - that still rested on her head. Only six have been discovered in Argaric graves. Diadems are exclusively found with women, and their graves hold a richer variety of valuable goods. Some male elite warriors were buried with swords. As for the power structure the two occupied, Dr. Rihuete suggests that perhaps they held potency in different realms. The swords could suggest “that enforcement of government decisions will be in the hands of men. Maybe women were political rulers, but not

alone,” she said. She suggests that perhaps the Argar were similar to the matrilineal Haudenosaunee (known also as the Iroquois), with women holding political and decision-making power - including over matters of chiefdom, war and justice - but men being in control of the military. These intriguing ideas fit into an emerging body of research from various archaeological studies in Europe that are re-examining female power during the Bronze Age. “The fact that most of the grave goods, including all of those made of silver, were associated with the female clearly points to an individual that was considered highly important,” said Karin Frei, a research professor in archaeometry at the National Museum of Denmark. “It makes sense to raise the question of whether a class-based state society could be ruled by women.” Dr. Frei continued “In several parts of Bronze Age Europe, females might have played a much bigger role in political and/or long-distance networks than previously thought.”. Joanna Bruck, an expert in the Bronze Age of Britain and Ireland and head of the School of Archaeology at University College Dublin, says that the assumption that elite women of this era were “bartered brides,” exchanged as objects in networks of male power, is ripe for reconsideration. The burial at La Almoloya “provides such clear evidence that women could hold special political power in the past,” Dr. Bruck said. “I think we’ve got to be open to the possibility that they wielded power and agency. Of course, power is a really complex thing. You can have power in some contexts but not in others. We shouldn’t think of power being something that you have or don’t have.”

Funds agreed for selfemployed workers and small businesses Self-employed workers and owners of small and medium-sized businesses will be considered for a slice of the €7 billion fund approved by Spain's government this week if they can show at least a 30 percent drop in their income in 2020, based upon their figures for 2019. The cash can be used to cover fixed costs such as salaries, rent on premises, utility bills, paying suppliers and contractors, or paying back debts incurred between March 2020 and May 2021. According to the Royal Decree, or Bill of Law, signed off on Friday by the Council of Ministers, the funds will be split into two – a total of €2bn will be set aside specifically for the Balearic and Canary Islands, which have been the hardest hit by the loss of tourism in the past year, and the remaining €5bn will be split between the remainder of Spain's regions in line with the general fall in their gross domestic product (GDP) and youth unemployment levels as at December 2020. The idea is to guarantee that companies and sole traders who were solvent before the pandemic remain so, and are in a position to keep going until the health crisis is largely over. Payments can cover up to 40 percent of the loss of income for small businesses and sole traders with up to 10 employees, and up to 20 percent of loss of income for

all other companies. For self-employed workers, a fixed sum of up to €3,000 can be paid to those who declare their earnings for tax purposes every quarter on an 'estimated' basis, as opposed to those who only make one income tax and four value-added tax (IVA) declarations due to all their income being subject to retentions of 15 percent at source. For the remainder, benefits range from between €4,000 and €200,000. As yet, the government has not been able to confirm when the money will be paid into successful applicants' bank accounts, although it is expecting to have lists drawn up ready to transfer the funds to regional governments within 10 days to a month. Industries that qualify for financial assistance include tourism, hotel and catering including bars and restaurants, businesses linked to these and to retail, including wholesalers, transport support sectors, and activities related to culture and sports. Firms and workers who receive the benefits offered must continue their business activity until at least June 2022, and will have to pay back the funds if they do not; they are also forbidden from paying dividends or increasing bonuses for their

management, directors or shareholders during that time. Nothing has been mentioned about the funds being on condition of zero redundancies – as was the case with the temporary lay-off scheme – but this condition has not been specifically excluded, either, and companies and sole traders are likely to be closely monitored to ensure their needs are real, that they are used in part to maintain jobs, and that

any permanent redundancies are in response to genuine financial necessity. In addition to the €11bn, a new stay of grace for tax payments has been agreed for another month. Up until now, companies and small and medium-sized businesses have been allowed to delay paying their taxes due in January, February and March for up to six months, interest-free – this will now also apply to taxes due in April.

Bankruptcy prevention A moratorium on the requirement for insolvent and struggling companies to declare themselves in receivership has been agreed until the end of this year, in order to prevent bankruptcies and firms going out of business. For debt restructure, the government has set aside €3bn, but says it will only be granted 'as a last resort' – companies and small and medium-sized businesses with loans from the national Credit Institute, the ICO, can negotiate an extension on their repayment term or a conversion of their finance agreements into 'participative loans'; reductions via the debt repayment scheme will only be permitted where they are the last hope of a business before it is forced to cease trading altogether. Finally, the remaining €1bn will be for building up capital in companies badly affected by the Covid crisis, but which are too small to apply for the ICO financial instrument. This €1bn will be managed by COFIDES, and as a condition, the government will expect to be able to recover what it pays out over time and at a reasonable, affordable level to be agreed in advance since, as Sra Calviño argues, the State 'should be permitted a participation' in 'future positive results' of companies which it has 'bailed out'.

You need to showcase it at its best, so you can sell for the best price possible! When listing a property for sale during a pandemic, there are certain ele-ments that are crucial in attracting a buyer. By not paying attention to the basics, you’ll risk buyers not even wanting to look inside, virtually or in-person. Here are 5 elements to focus on: 1. If your home has a driveway to the front, be certain it is clear of clutter, clean and any cracks are filled - If you have a carport and it's looking dirty, use a pressure washer to freshen the look.

2. Pay extra attention to flooring, lighting, and walls - Consider adding centerpiece plants or flowers to enhance dull tables and eliminate other clutter that often gravitates to flat surface. 3. Make it smell like home - The scent that meets prospective buyers or their agents should be pleasant and not overwhelming. 4. Remove toys and anything else that doesn't belong - A tidy home is a welcoming home. On the other hand, a cluttered home gives the impression that there is a lack of storage space. Even in the war-drobes. You’re not using your suitcases at the moment, so put any unworn clothes in there. It will make your wardrobe look spacious and tidy. You can also use vacuum storage bags, if you’re still strug-gling with squeezing your clothes inside! 5. Remove all unnecessary furniture to maximize space - Or simply rearrange the furniture to provide a smooth flowing walkway through the room. Go through your property as if you were the buyer. Use common sense and look from floor to ceiling. Change lightbulbs, clean cobwebs and keep the toilet seat and lid closed!

The Queen’s statement was a PR masterclass

Opposition calls government out on Cabo Roig rubbish

Meghan is fond of referring to the Royal Family as “the Firm”. She appears to regard it as something of an insult. That’s a mistake, one of many she has made lately, critics say. If the institution is House of Windsor Ltd and the Queen is its chief executive, the monarch is as good as any boss of a FTSE 100 company, as the last 48 hours have shown. The Queen will have been deluged with (mostly bad) advice from PR “experts” on how to respond to the criticism of the firm made by Meghan and Prince Harry in their interview with Oprah Winfrey last Sunday. Say nothing. Let the already “dead in the water” Prince Andrew carry the can for the alleged racist remarks about the colour of Archie’s skin. Say the palace will investigate any formal complaints of racism, safe in the knowledge that Harry is unlikely to name and shame. In the end, her statement was a masterclass in how to defuse a very tense situation and get back to business as usual. First, don’t rush it; going too fast risks errors. Also, a period of radio silence suggests that you do not regard the issue as urgent and, therefore, not too serious. Her statement is very short. If you are trying to take the heat out of a situation, the fewer words you say, the less ammunition you give “the other side” to respond to. It took two hours for Meghan to make her case. The Queen opted for three sentences.

The opposition spokesperson for Orihuela, Carolina Gracia, has denounced the current state of the promenade in Cabo Roig. The PSOE politician explained that the recent heavy rains last week have washed garden waste and prunings into the huge drainage pipes at Cabo Roig. The cutting had been left behind after the local government team organised a clean-up last May. These have now been compacted and are blocking the drainage pipes. Carolina Gracia recalled that "at the end of October from our group we already denounced and showed in a video the disgraceful state in which this area was, the neighbours knew that on those during that month there could be episodes of rain which could cause a dangerous situation such as the one that you can see right now”. The Socialist Party said that “this is another example of how this government team works, it is not normal that each action that it starts is never finished and remains half done. If there was a budget for cleaning, it should have included the removal of the remains. Six months was bad but now it is nearly one year and the

She began, as she should, by acknowledging the couple’s suffering. “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.” The expression of regret is genuine and warm. Note no formal titles: just “Harry” and “Meghan”. But the addition of the phrase “full extent” raises the question of whether the couple really told the family how bad things had got. The use of the word “challenging” also implies that Harry and Meghan might have been partly responsible for their woes since they were not up to the challenge of royal life. The question of what was or was not

said to Harry, and by whom, about Archie’s skin colour could not go unaddressed or unacknowledged. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning (and) they are taken very seriously,” the Queen said solemnly. But she seized on the couple’s refusal to name the alleged perpetrator, nor reveal the exact words he or she said, as an opportunity to assert that the issue would be “addressed by the family privately”. She also uses Meghan and Harry’s failure to explain the tone of the alleged remark — blatant racism or dumb question? — to again, inject a hint of doubt into the claim by noting “some recollections may vary”. The Queen knows the truth will never come out. All she has to do to protect the firm is muddy the waters a bit. Her Majesty saves the best until last. “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.” What a fantastic sentence. On its face it seems simple and supportive. But there’s a subtle hidden meaning. The use of the word “always”, rather than, say, “will continue to be”, seems to suggest that nothing Harry and Meghan will ever do will bother the Royal Family enough for them to criticise or cast aside Harry and Meghan in the way that the couple have just criticised and cast aside the House of Windsor. Play the victims if you like, the Queen is saying, but don’t expect us to join in.

area is still a mess and now there is risk of flooding”. Carolina Gracia said that at the time Councillor Dámaso Aparicio explained that the cleaning had been awarded at a cost of 44,500 euros and that local residents had been calling for the work to be carried out "It is incredible that then Mr. Aparicio asked the CHS for more work and care of these spaces and that today, nine months later, the neglect of his performance has resulted in a dangerous situation,” she said. The PSOE Party spokesperson said: “Last month we saw how the CHS warned the Orihuela City Council about the accumulation of plant remains and prunings in the Rambla del Río Nacimiento, which had been there since December. The explanation given from the Infrastructures Department was that the municipal technician for Orihuela Costa had medical leave, but a month later the only thing that has happened is that with the rains these situations worsen and cause alarm among the residents, that is why we are forced to inform the CHS of the current situation of the Rambla de Cabo Roig.”

Hearing is thinking! Does your brain need more sound? Hearing is thinking. Did you know that? Your ears collect sound, but it’s your brain that actually understands it. Good hearing helps your brain stay fit throughout your life – and helps avoid many other health problems. This means that hearing health is brain health. Do you ever find that people keep mumbling? Miss the point of their stories? Or you can’t hear the TV? And do you ever feel tired and stressed from socialising? Confused about conversations? Or that you’d prefer to

stay home? Your brain may need more sound! With hearing loss, there isn’t enough sound information coming to your brain from your ears, or the quality of that information is too low. This makes it much harder for the brain to orient itself in your surroundings –which then makes it harder to focus on what’s important. It affects all the different parts of your brain that make sense of yoursurroundings. They all have to work harder. This leaves fewer mental resources for other things

Spain sees sharp decline in births Nine months later, experts’ forecasts are coming true: the coronavirus pandemic is causing a sharp decline in Spain’s birth rate. Between the beginning of December and the end of January, births fell by 22.6 percent from the same period a year earlier. While the definitive data is not in yet, this is the first indicator of the effects of the strict home confinement during March and April of last year, when the babies born in December and January were conceived. Civil records show that 45,054 newborns were registered during the last month of 2020 and the first month of 2021, representing 13,141 fewer births than over the same period a year earlier. The figure is based on information from 3,929 registries offering online records, representing 93 percent of the population. In the month of January alone, there were 6,889 fewer newborns registered in civil registries across Spain than in January 2020, a drop of 23 percent. By comparison, between January 2019 and January 2020 the decline was just 1.7 percent. This trend is backed by available data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), which shows a sharp decline in births in early 2020 within a larger downward tendency. The year 2019 had already set a record with 360,617 births, the lowest annual number in the historical series that

the INE began in 1941. But the first half of 2020 set a whole new record with 168,047 births, a 4.2 percent decline from the first half of 2019. Full figures for 2020 are not available yet. The decline in births will add to the overall drop in Spain’s fertility rate, which has been falling for years and is now an average of 1.23 children per woman, compared with 2.8 in 1975. Women are having fewer children than ever, and having them later in life. And now, with the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, experts expect the rate to drop even further. Nobody will venture to say by exactly how much, but everyone agrees that the crisis will last beyond a few months. “The INE will provide the real figure, but the numbers coincide

with what we’d been expecting and what we’re seeing in other countries,” explains Diego Ramiro, director of the Institute of Economics, Geography and Demographics at the National Research Council (CSIC). In December, births declined by 21.6 percent in Italy. In January, they dropped by 13 percent in France. “In some US states such as Florida, California or Hawaii, they’ve seen drops ranging from 5% to nearly 20 percent,” he adds. Experts note that if there is a fourth wave of the coronavirus and more adverse economic conditions, youths may take even longer to move out. Improved fertility rates will depend on how the economy performs, but nobody is expecting a V-shaped recovery, notes Ramiro. The baby bust is here to stay for a while.

Five tips for protecting and growing your savings In today’s climate of global uncertainty and extremely low interest rates, careful planning is vitally important to secure long-term financial security. 1. Establish your strategy Your portfolio should be created and managed for your personal goals and individual circumstances. Effective tax planning means your investments are fully Spanish tax compliant.

3. Your timeline for investing Normally the longer you invest, the more risk you can take, which should help smooth out the volatility of the markets.

2. Risk vs Return You should be aware of the different types of investments on offer and take into account the level of risk you are willing to take in return for greater growth.

5. Regularly review your strategy It is vital to review how your investments are progressing. Circumstances change, laws change and tax legislation changes. By sitting down with your adviser, you can ensure your

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Although sterling was well beaten by the Norwegian krone, it was competitive among the chasing group, eventually strengthening by an average of 0.2% and missing out only narrowly to the Canadian dollar and Australian dollar. Caution and optimism were the major themes for the pound, with Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warning that “the risks around the Covid recovery…are still on balance distributed on the downside.” He also faced, head-on, concerns that the re-emergence of inflation would mean higher interest rates. The Bank will not make that move without “clear evidence” that employment and inflation are on target. The Governor was notably less bullish than Chief Economist Andy Haldane and his expectation of a “coiled spring” recovery. He also predicted that many of the changes to work and spending habits will be permanent. Nevertheless, his tone was upbeat, and he was careful to pay even-handed attention to the possibility of negative interest rates and “tightening policy, should that be needed”. The Governor stuck closely to the title of his speech, studiously avoiding the elephant in the room with not a single mention of Brexit. During most of the week the few UK economic data were supportive of the pound, except January’s trade figures, whichwere less sparkling. Exports to the EU fell 40.7% and imports from Europe were down by 28.8%. A survey of estate agents by RICS showed a net 52% increase in house prices, though new listings fell for a second month as a result of the latest lockdown. The BRC

said there had been a return to growth for retail sales in February. An opinion poll from YouGov showed consumer confidence rising to its highest level since the pandemic began. EURO The euro had little to say for itself. The Euroland economic data were uncontroversial and political leaders remained on the whole quiet, save for the occasional argument about Covid vaccine trade and delivery. The euro’s behaviour was similarly unremarkable. It weakened by an average of 0.4%, losing three quarters of a cent to sterling, and was steady against the US dollar. When the European Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged, it made a slight tweak to its quantitative easing strategy. “Purchases under the pandemic emergency purchase programme (PEPP) over the next quarter [will] be conducted at a significantly higher pace than during the first months of this year” but the size of that programme will remain unchanged. At her press conference, President Christine Lagarde was expected to say something about the Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme, given the recent upward pressure on bond yields. Some on the Governing Council have suggested that the bank should buy more bonds to hold down yields, but President Lagardeinsisted that the bank “is not doing yield curve control” and made the usual call for national governments to shoulder some of the stimulus burden themselves.

Nonresidents stuck in UK until April

Spain has extended travel restrictions from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa until 6pm on 30th March. This mean any non-residents stuck in the UK following the Brexit deadline have a further wait. The Cabinet agreed to keep the measures in place on air and sea arrivals from Britain, as well as on flights from Brazil and South Africa, due to concerns about coronavirus strains first detected in those countries. At a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson María Jesús Montero said that the only goal of this measure is to extend the restrictions for two more weeks in a bid to contain transmission of the new variants. Restrictions on passenger travel from the UK by air and sea have been in

place since 22ndDecember, following alarm over the B.1.1.7 strain of the coronavirus that was first detected in the English county of Kent. Spain introduced further restrictions on travel from Brazil and South Africa on 2nd February after more infectious variants of the virus were also identified in those countries. The measures were due to end on 16th March. Under the rules, the only flights from these countries allowed into Spanish territory are those “transporting exclusively Spanish citizens and residents of Spain, as well as nationals and residents of Andorra, and passengers in international transit to a non-Schengen country with a stopover of under 24 hours and who may not leave the Spanish airport’s transit area.”

Tourism kickstart International tourism could start up again in Spain in late spring if the country meets its target of having 40 percent of the population vaccinated by then. Minister for industry, trade and tourism, Reyes Maroto, spoke of 'optimistic perspectives' for the holiday sector ahead of summer when she was interviewed on Canal Sur Radio recently. She warned that the Easter holidays would have to be handled 'with caution', and recalled that all regions on the mainland will be required to shut their borders during the long weekend at the beginning of April. Madrid is against the move, with city Mayor Isabel Díaz Ayuso insisting that a person can 'just as easily' pass on the virus to someone 'whether they are from Paris or Parla', the latter being a commuter town within the Greater Madrid region, but the orders have come from central government and she may not have a choice. Talks are under way about whether the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands should be excluded from the regional border-closure requirement, given that their unique geographical situation means they are already more protected from cases imported from elsewhere in the country. Work is under way already to 'guarantee safe mobility' as soon as the conditions are right to allow it, including a digital 'vaccine certificate' and the continuing immunisation roll-out. Carolina Darias, the new Health Minister – after her predecessor Salvador

Illa left to run for regional elections in Catalunya – has announced that another 4.8 million Pfizer vaccine doses are set to arrive in Spain in April, which will mean 2.4 million people, or 5 percent of the population, can be inoculated. And 'in a matter of days', in Reyes Maroto's words, the Johnson&Johnson vaccine is expected to be given the nod by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which will change the game plan entirely. “This vaccine is going to crank things

up a gear, because it only needs one dose rather than two,” Sra Maroto says. She explained in her Canal Sur Radio interview that the national government's plan, in line with the rest of the European Union, is for around 30 percent to 40 percent of Spain's population to have been given their full quota of vaccines by spring, and that 70 percent of the national headcount would have been immunised by the end of the summer. “Once we've reached the forecast spring vaccine percentage, we'll be in the

right situation to be able to reopen our holiday destinations, in line with what we're working on with the EU,” Sra Maroto reveals. She was asked by the radio presenter what would happen with the 2021 Imserso holidays – the State-subsidised out-of-season staycations for Spain's pensioners – as these were all cancelled in 2020, but would normally start being advertised in September for tours to start in October. The Minister said plans were for the Imserso breaks to go ahead this year and that she would 'even try to speed up the process' in order to 'revive demand'. Not only are Imserso breaks crucial for travel agencies and national tour operators, who make the bulk of their autumn, winter and early spring income from them, but they are hugely in demand among the community they are aimed at – Spanish State pensioners. “We're going to try to accelerate the Imserso reactivation, given that the scheme targets a section of the population who will nearly all have been vaccinated by then,” Sra Maroto assures. “Our retirees and our elderly population have been the ones hardest hit by the pandemic; not just from a health point of view, but also emotionally. I have elderly parents, and they're desperate to get back to normal life,” she concludes.

San Fulgencio sets aside Three prisoners detained for 3,200 square metres for radicalising fellow inmates in Murcia an urban garden project San Fulgencio town hall, through the Department of Works and Services, has begun work on an urban garden project in the town. As confirmed by the councillor in charge of the project, Francisco Molero, the allotments will be located in the urbanization area of San Fulgencio, "in a plot between Calles Galicia, Rosales, Dublin and Belgrado, which has 3,200 square meters of land and about 68 arable plots of variable size, between 6 and 26 square metres.” Hidraqua, the water management company, is in charge of works, which have a total cost of 79,088 euros. The works are expected to finish before summer, and as indicated

by the councillor, the Town Hall has launched the drafting of the necessary regulations so that those residents who are interested can request the use one of these plots for cultivation. "We will inform through the information channels of the town hall as soon as this municipal ordinance has completed all its processing, which is complex, and when the application period is going to open," he added. Elena García, Hidraqua technician, said that throughout the urban garden project “a responsible and efficient use of water will be carried out at all times, for which an irrigation system will be installed that takes

maximum advantage of the natural resources.” The plan is to allow gardeners to work the land without chemical products, with the minimum consumption of water and without pesticides. The project will give residents "the opportunity to participate in an experience of organic farming, avoiding the use of chemicals and with a composting area to create and use compost," said Councillor Molero who added “it will also be a meeting and leisure space in the open air for all people in San Fulgencio, by incorporating a pergola, fountains, picnic tables and parking for bicycles, so that everyone who wishes can enjoy this environment”.

Guardia Civil have intervened at a Murcia prison to detain three inmates accused of trying to radicalize other prisoners at the facility. The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions (SGIP) carries out strict monitoring for radicalization in order that this sort of activity is identified and neutralized, said prison sources. The operation carried out by the Guardia Civil began in mid-2020 and has culminated in the arrest of the three inmates who allegedly had formed a group aligned with terrorist organization Daesh, aimed at promoting jihadist recruitment in the prison environment. These terrorist recruiters are said to have resorted to coercion and even violence to further their cause. The three detainees had allegedly formed a group during their stay in prison and between them, developed recruitment and indoctrination processes to capture, entice and even coerce followers for the jihadist cause. The group's leader, identified as M.F. was detained in Daroca prison (Zaragoza), where he is serving a sentence for sexual assault. The other two members, identified as M.A. and K.B., were detained in the Murcian penitentiary and are serving sentences for crimes of

Officers search cells in the Murcia prison

homicide, illegal detention, robbery with violence, injuries and crimes against public health, in the case of M.A., and for the crimes of robbery with force, forgery of a public document, fraud and robbery in an inhabited house, in the case of K.B. During the investigation, the control and monitoring of the inmates of the Murcia facility was key, as well as the collaboration with the SGIP to in order to identify the culprits. Coercion and violence From the research carried out so far, it has been revealed that the detainees were followers of terrorist organization Daesh and their aim specifically was to undertake jihadist recruitment in the prison environment, resorting to coercion and violence against

other inmates. Their ultimate objective was to recruit, and indoctrinate in the jihadist ideology, inmates about to be released, with the final intention that they carry out some type of terrorist action abroad. This latest operation is not the first carried out by the Guardia Civil against recruitment and indoctrination in the prison environment. Back in October 2018 a group of 25 inmates linked to the terrorist organization Daesh across 17 prisons was dismantled. Since the elevation of the terrorist alert to level 4 in June 2015, the Guardia Civil has reinforced all of its operational strategies and lines of investigation related to terrorist threats, especially in terms of radicalization.

Spain in world's top 10 for gender equality Spain is in the top 10 worldwide for countries with the greatest level of equality between men and women, according to the most recent World Economic Forum report. Out of 153 nations studied, Spain comes eighth – and many other western European nations, including the UK, do not even make it into the top 10. In fact, Spain even beats Germany, whose national leader – Chancellor Angela Merkel – is female, fronting a Parliament where 40 percent of its members are women; the central European nation comes 10th. The most recent figures available are from early 2020, and show that on a global level, it will take 257 years at the current rate before women have the same financial opportunities as men, and shows that even in European Union countries, where progress is the fastest in this area, the gender pay gap remains at about 21.5 percent. Not all the 'most equal' countries are in Europe, though, says the World Economic Forum report – one of the best on earth, coming 9th, is Rwanda, even after its having fallen several places in the past year. Over 50 percent of Rwanda's national Parliament is made up of women, although the country still suffers from a significant gender pay gap with females' salaries being considerably lower than those of males. Another non-European country in the top 10 which may come as a surprise is Nicaragua, one of the poorest nations in the Americas – coming 5th overall, Nicaragua has worked hard to achieve

parity in education at all levels, and boasts a high percentage of women in positions of power and responsibility. Part of this is possible because, like many Central American nations, many of the men have emigrated to wealthier countries, such as the USA, to work, meaning women are more numerous and effectively 'run the show' in the males' absence. Again, outside of Europe, but a firstworld nation, New Zealand is 6th, having risen from 7th in early 2019 – here, once more, women are very well represented in positions of power and responsibility in government, business and other organisations, but as is commonly seen even in the world's most equal countries, females still earn less on average than males for jobs of a similar level of qualifications, experience, specialism or essential in their nature. Spain sits just below the Republic of Ireland, which has been in the top 10 for some years but had risen in the ranking as at early 2020, largely due to the fact it has reached almost absolute parity in secondary education and in access for women to senior jobs. It is perhaps no surprise that the top four positions are hogged by Scandinavian countries – a part of the world typically the most modern, progressive, wealthy, and with some of the lowest levels of poverty and unemployment. Sweden comes in at number four – down from number three in early 2019 – since its female participation in the higher echelons of business and politics, and its

progress in closing the gender pay gap, has reached a plateau, but it continues to be one of the most equal in both areas on earth. Finland is at number three, up from number four in 2019, largely because of its female leader and a government made up mainly of women, as well as an increase in the previous year of women's presence in the top-paid professions. Norway is at number two, the same as in 2019, although its variables have improved, says the World Economic Forum report. The country of the Fjords has reached almost absolute parity in all aspects of life, including at every level of corporate hierarchy and politics. Iceland is officially the most genderequal country on earth, the report states, thanks to its excellent efforts in increasing female presence in leadership roles and positions of responsibility across the board. Progress Spain is described as being one of the countries that has progressed the most between early 2019 and early 2020 – in fact, in that time, it soared by 20 places in one hit. Coinciding with the new left-wing coalition government's

formation after the November 2019 elections – considerably reinforcing the somewhat weak mandate held by the current socialist president since a noconfidence vote against the right-wing opposition put him in the hotseat in summer 2018 – Spain has made dramatic progress in empowering women in its political arena, the World Economic Forum says. Women in politics is where Spain has made the most progress in terms of gender equality, and this continues to be one of the existing government's main priorities. Again, though, like most

countries even in the top 10 and practically all of those outside the top three, Spain still suffers from a gender pay gap in almost every profession, the report states. Latest data show that women on average earn €5,500 less per year before tax than men in the same jobs or those of a similar level of experience, expertise and essential in nature, and that women are more likely to be in part-time positions, menial jobs, or on the minimum wage than men. This, again, is an issue Spain's government is determined to address, and ideas floated include free childcare nationwide, and equal maternity and paternity leave, with both raised to 24 weeks from their current 16 for women and eight for men.

This Week´s Movie Picks Miss Congeniality 2 - Armed and Justice League Sunday 21st March – ITV2, 7.35 pm Fabulous Saturday 20th March – ITV2, 7.45 pm Because of the notoriety she gained from the Miss United States pageant, Gracie Hart's (Sandra Bullock's) life as an undercover F.B.I. Agent is over. In addition, Agent Eric Matthews (Benjamin Bratt) broke off their relationship which she did not take well. Begrudgingly on the advice her boss, F.B.I. Assistant Director Harry McDonald (Ernie Hudson), Gracie decides to become the F.B.I.'s media relations officer. Ten months later with the assistance of style coach Joel Meyers (Diedrich Bader) and a best-selling book behind her about her experience, Gracie becomes a designer-clad media darling and the made-up face of the F.B.I. The new Gracie is the exact opposite of Agent Sam Fuller (Regina King), a woman who, like Gracie before her pageant experience, has deep seated anger issues. The two do not get along, but that doesn't stop McDonald from assigning Sam to be Gracie's bodyguard. The two are sent to Las Vegas, Nevada when Gracie's friend, reigning Miss United States Cheryl Frasier

Caitlyn Jenner replaced in trailer for final ever KUWTK series She might not share the famous last name, but Caitlyn Jenner was once one of the principal stars of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. But 14 years on and the ex of Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner does not even make an appearance in the lengthy trailer for the final season of the hugely successful reality show. Instead Kourtney Kardashian's ex-boyfriend Scott Disick, with whom she shares three children, takes a larger role. Despite splitting from Kourtney in 2017, Scott has never been removed from the Caitlyn Jenner show's cast, with his girlfriends since even joining him onscreen. Caitlyn, who is the father of Kendall and Kylie last made a cameo in 2020’s season 18. In the 20th and final season's emotional trailer, narrated by Caitlyn's former stepdaughter Kim, we hear from all the members of the family. The only two missing are Caitlyn and her former stepson Rob, who unlike Caitlyn dropped out of the limelight some years ago. Caitlyn does receive a mention,

however. Her former wife Kris Jenner is heard saying: "I got a call from Caitlyn. But I just don't know, am I going to wanna go down this road?" She is talking to Khloe, who then tells the camera: "I don't know if mom has any more to give." Images promoting the new season show Scott with Caitlyn's former family. Rob is also absent when compared to a picture from early in their time as reality stars. It was in 2013 that Caitlyn and Kris announced their separation after 23 years of marriage. After the split Caitlyn, then known as Bruce Jenner, opened up about her transition. Elsewhere in the trailer we see Khloe injecting herself for IVF - and talking babies with on/off boyfriend Tristan Thompson; Kendall Jenner talking about wanting a baby "soon"; Kim crying about divorce drama; and all sorts of the usual family drama. As for Scott, he is heard discussing the possibility of proposing to Kourtney despite the fact the two aren’t now even dating. He also appears to give a listening ear to the Kardashian sisters amid their dramas.

Chrissy Teigen confused Michael Keaton for a waiter Chrissy Teigen once confused Michael Keaton for a champagne waiter after the Golden Globes. The 35-year-old model has admitted that her post-Globes encounter with the Hollywood star was her most embarrassing encounter with another celebrity. Asked about her best celebrity encounter on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon', Chrissy shared: "God, I think it was after the Golden Globes - oh no, this might be worst ..." Chrissy - who has Luna, four, and Miles, two, with husband John Legend - then recalled the embarrassing details of her meeting with the movie star. Meghan Markle lodged formal complaint with ITV about Piers Morgan's comments The Duchess of Sussex formally complained to ITV about Piers Morgan's comments on Good Morning Britain following her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey. It was confirmed that Piers had quit the ITV breakfast show last Tuesday. His departure came after it was revealed he is being investigated by TV watchdog Ofcom after the organisation received more than 41,000 complaints about his remarks on Monday's show. According to news agency PA, it's understood that Meghan's concern was not about the personal attacks on the validity of her racism allegation made against the royal family, nor her claims she was not supported by the institution when experiencing suicidal thoughts. The complaint is understood to focus on how Piers' comments may affect the issue of mental health generally and those attempting to deal with their own problems. Piers was also criticised by mental health charity Mind, who said in a tweet it was "disappointed and concerned" by his comments. The organisation added: "It’s vital that, when people reach out for support or share their experiences of ill mental health, they are treated with dignity, respect and empathy." During the interview with Oprah which aired on CBS in the US on Sunday night, Meghan revealed she had suicidal thoughts while she was pregnant with her son Archie.

Poets’ Buddha Trumps on sale Corner A reflection on knife crime by local poet David Whitney. Send your poems to office@costablancapeople.com "What A Life Is For?" The lad lay on the London street His hand clutching his chest He saw his life flash by his eyes He'd tried to do his best Just sixteen years that's all he was No trouble making lout He'd just been in the wrong place At the wrong time There's no doubt A gang of maybe six or eight Had prompted an attack No reason for the violence No strength to fight them back A flash of light across a blade Was all he really saw The pain set in just seconds after He had hit the floor And now he'd be a number A statistic in a book Another lad who'd died Whose life was mercilessly took A common daily problem Hardly shocking anymore A senseless disregard for life And what a life is for. A Chinese furniture-maker is selling Buddha statues that look like former US president Donald Trump. While Trump may not be known for his calm, Zen like demeanour, a white statue of Trump seated like Buddha does paint a picture of serenity. The statue is 4.6 metres tall and shows "Trump" sitting n a calm posture like Buddha, with his face lowered and hands resting together on his lap, eyes shut.

Street sweeper and 80 year old among cocaine arrests in Torrevieja A street sweeper has been arrested by Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, accused of masterminding a network that sold cocaine through a network of sales staff. 10 people were arrested, including an octogenarian. Officers arrested ten alleged members of a drug trafficking network led by a street sweeper who took advantage of his rounds to distribute cocaine and had a team of salespeople "on staff" with a monthly salary of around 600 euros. Among those arrested was an 80-year-old woman, the mother of one of those arrested, who was paid 100 euros a month to make wrappers for the drugs. Investigations began in May when officers learned that a street sweeper was selling cocaine on his rounds. The operation grew and the

suspect is believed to have been earning as much 600 euros per day, so he recruited other people to his network. These ‘salespeople’ worked as if it were a real company and, in exchange for a salary of 600 euros per month, they had to comply with "a strict schedule that began at eight in the morning and ended at eleven at night, from Monday to Saturday,” said Guardia Civil sources. The boss was in charge of Sunday’s sales and distribution. The investigation also revealed that if the workers did not satisfy the boss, he did not hesitate to use violence against them, doling out brutal beatings. Two of the ten detainees have been sent to prison after making statements at Torrevieja court.

Why Spain’s bestselling white wine should be on your radar This Spanish drop is perfect for lovers of crisp, light, white wines; the sort of people who order Sauvignon Blanc in bar, or buy a bottle of Chablis when they’re treating themselves for a night in. It’s something that’s bright, citrusscented, and great value, and it’s called Rueda, which means ‘wheel’ in Spanish. Importantly, it’s a white wine producing area in northern Spain that’s booming in its home nation, but relatively undiscovered by the wider world. In fact, Rueda, which is located about two hours drive north of Madrid, is the source of Spain’s best-selling white wine, with more than 40 percent of the market. So what makes it such a success? Well, it’s both refreshing and affordable. Almost entirely made from a grape called Verdejo, Rueda can be compared to cool-

climate Sauvignon Blanc, with flavours of lime and grapefruit. But rather than having the gooseberry, grassy character of Sauvignon, the whites of Rueda tend to have a refreshing herbal note, sometimes with a subtle taste of fennel. As for the cost, Rueda isn’t one of those wines that’s delicious but inaccessibly priced, and delivers all its appealing traits without charging the earth. The character of Rueda is also unique. Its intense, distinctive and refreshing taste results from a combination of Spanish native grape Verdejo, and Rueda’s extreme, continental climate, plus its high altitude vines rooted deeply into soils so stony, they look like pebble

beaches. In essence, Rueda is not something that can be replicated elsewhere, especially as 10% of Rueda’s vineyards are over 40 years old, with some more than 100, giving a depth to the wines that you just won’t get with a young vine. And, while the region was officially created in 1980, its wine producing origins can be traced back to the middle ages – this is an ancient vinegrowing landscape. Finally, although Rueda is primarily a citrus-fresh light white wine based on Verdejo, there are variations in style. Some of this relates to other grape varieties planted in the region, such as Sauvignon Blanc – which is sometimes blended with Verdejo to give an additional aromatic layer. And some of this variation relates to winemaking techniques, with the region also home to richer barrel-influenced whites, and historic fortified wines, not unlike Sherry. In all, the wines of this Spanish region are brilliant partners to a range of cuisines, but, in particular, Rueda provides the perfect wine pairing for a plate of seafood.

Food invention mysteries Traditional recipes are interwoven with culture, history and identity in cities and countries around the world. So what happens when it isn’t exactly clear where a certain food or recipe originated? From counter-claims to places that have a long-running beef (burger) with one another, here are a few tasty dishes people get a bit testy over... Apple pie: UK vs. USA The saying ‘American as apple pie’ – commonly used to describe someone or something typically American – seems to suggest this comforting, classic dessert was invented in the US. But it was a 1924 ad for suits that first used the phrase. And even the apples sliced into the pie originate from elsewhere, being native to Asia. The first written reference to apple pie was in 1381 in England. The recipe, by The Canterbury Tales author Geoffrey Chaucer, called for a pastry crust packed with apples, pears, figs and raisins – but not even a teaspoon of sugar. Baklava: Turkey vs. Greece This sticky dessert – made with gossamer-thin filo pastry and nuts, drenched in syrup – might be sweet, but it certainly isn't simple. In fact, several countries claim this as their national pastry, most fervently Turkey and Greece. Baklava's origins are as layered as the sweet treat itself, partly because its history stretches so far back. It's believed the earliest version was under the Assyrian Empire in 800 BC,

when bread dough was baked with honey and nuts, and that the Ancient Greeks developed phyllo (or filo) pastry for a more delicate version. The Ottoman Empire, encompassing Greece, Turkey and other nations, popularised the dessert, which was apparently perfected in 17th-century Istanbul.

Chicken tikka masala: UK vs. India This creamy, mildly spiced chicken curry is widely considered to be Britain’s national dish. And it’s also claimed it was invented in the UK – at a restaurant in Glasgow, to be precise. In 1970 Ali Ahmed Aslam, of Glasgow’s Shish Mahal curry house, apparently emptied a can of tomato soup over a chicken tikka dish a customer complained was “too dry”. He stirred in yogurt and some extra spices, and a British icon was born. It isn’t that simple, though, of course. There are counter-claims that the origins of chicken tikka masala lie in India where, under the British Empire, sauce was

added to dry, fiery curries to suit palates unaccustomed to spice. Another theory is that it’s a take on butter chicken, a traditional Punjabi recipe. French fries: France vs. Belgium You might assume the cue is in the name. I mean, they’re called French fries, right? One of the most popular theories is that President Thomas Jefferson’s French chef made some chipped potatoes ‘in the French manner’, giving the burger-loving side its moniker and introducing what has become one of the USA’s favourite foods. But food historians and experts believe that these moreish chipped potatoes were actually invented in Belgium in the 17th century. A popular (if unfounded) story suggests they became known as French fries because soldiers tried them while erroneously believing they were on French soil, when in fact they were in Belgium. Cornish pasty: Devon vs. Cornwall, UK These two southwestern counties have a habit of falling out over food, and the humble Cornish pasty has really stirred up conflict over the years. Yes, it’s called a Cornish pasty, and the story

goes that these meat-and-veg pastry pockets were popularised in the 17th and 18th centuries as a handheld meal miners could easily take to work. But other evidence has thrown their origins – and potentially the name – into doubt. Dr Todd Gray, an academic at Exeter University, claimed a document describes the making of pasties in Devon 236 years before a written account of pasties in Cornwall. A Cornish counterclaim argued that cave drawings suggest pasties existed in that county in primitive times. Hamburgers: USA vs. Germany Hamburgers are American, right? The modern incarnation might be attributed to at least four Americans – Wisconsin’s

Charlie Nagreen, Connecticut’s Louis Lassen, Oklahoma’s Oscar Weber Bilby and the Menches brothers from New York – but the beloved bite is actually German in origin. The idea of putting a minced meat patty in a (brötchen) roll came over from Northern Europe with German immigrants and spread across the States. So while it’s a core part of American cuisine it’s indelibly associated with the German city of Hamburg. Patients to self check for bowel cancer by swallowing a smart capsule Patients in the UK can now check if they have bowel cancer by swallowing a tiny capsule in what experts have described as a trend toward an increase in home health care accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. This new development will avoid the unpleasant but often necessary procedure of having a camera inserted into the gut. One of the UK’s leading doctors said the capsules illustrate a major shift in healthcare from hospitals where more diagnostics and disease treatments are being done at home. “When we came out of the ‘peak of Covid’ and the pandemic breach, the NHS is now promoting real innovation to expand services under many other conditions. That’s why we’re now testing these ingenious capsule cameras to allow more people to get tested for cancer quickly and safely.” said Sir Simon Stevens, Executive Director of NHS England. “What sounds like science fiction is now becoming a reality, and when those minute cameras pass through your body, they take two shots per second, checking for signs of cancer and other diseases such as Crohn’s disease.” Just last month, 31,000 women in London were sent a home testing kit to check for signs of cervical cancer and overcome the embarrassment and discomfort some women experience when having a smear test with a nurse or to the doctor. Now around 11,000 patients with potential bowel cancer symptoms will be offered the option of swallowing the capsule as an alternative. The current standard test for bowel cancer includes

thousands of patients who were unable to undergo radiotherapy. “This is just another example of how NHS uses the latest innovative treatment options and brings NHS home to patients.” Professor Martin Marshall, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: “We know that some patients are reluctant to seek help for certain cancers because the available diagnostic tests can be invasive, so this is

an endoscopy, an invasive and uncomfortable process undertaken to photograph the patient’s colon and bowel. With the capsule treatment, the patient will be fitted with a belt and receiver. The patient then goes home to self administer laxatives to clear the bowel in order for the camera to get a clear picture. The patient is given the capsule to take home with them. The process takes five to eight hours. Photographs of the bowel are sent from the capsule over a wireless network and then passed on to a cancer specialist to help them decide if a person has bowel cancer, which kills about 16,600 people a year. Patients naturally excrete the capsule later. The test is already in use in Scotland where most patients tested were cancerfree and did not experience any risks or complications with the procedure aside from the unpleasant side effects of the laxatives. Professor Andrew Goddard, president

of the Royal College of Physicians, said: “The future of healthcare needs to be closer to home, and indeed this is the vision of the NHS’s long-term plan [for the NHS in England]. As technology advances we will see more and more tests that can be conducted at home, and that’s great, provided they’re available to everyone. “As for colon capsules, we hope this will save some people from having to do a colonoscopy. But they will still need to undergo bowel training, which many believe is the worst part of a colonoscopy, and come to a hospital or clinic to get a capsule and monitoring equipment. ” Professor Peter Johnson, Clinical Director of Cancer in England, said the latest home care initiative has shown that the service provides rapid tracking of new cancer treatments and diagnoses. He responded to the suspension of major cancer care at a hospital during a pandemic by delivering chemotherapy drugs to

an exciting development and we will be very interested to see the results of the trial parsing. “General practitioners are preparing for the rise in cases of suspected postCovid cancer, and capsule chambers and a new cervical cancer test are welcome developments that can allow more patients to monitor and manage their own health at home without embarrassment and discomfort.”

Biggest hair trends for spring Going into spring 2021, a new hairstyle is one way to break up the monotony, treat yourself to a bit of self-care and reset for brighter days ahead. Whether you're comfortable visiting your stylist at the salon or want ideas on how to style your hair at home, this season's hair trends have you covered.

length and a fringe is a great first step. From blunt to wispy, there are a number of fringe styles to choose from, but a piece-y, textured fringe is a good gateway into the fringe lifestyle. When you're at the salon, ask your stylist to soften the fringe so it grows out more naturally.

The Mullet Forget every stereotype you associate with the mullet. The 2021 version of the cut is incredibly cool. Mullets have taken on a less boxy and more feminine approach these days. The softer shape has made the notorious classic a more approachable trend that appeals to all textures. The mullet can be adapted for a number of hair textures, from tightlycoiled curls to straight strands for an effortless vibe. Try using a volume and matte texture spray for airiness and wispy pieces to further add to the easy feel of the look.

Curtain fringe Speaking of fringes, curtain fringes are predicted to continue to be popular this spring. It's just a nice face frame without a full blunt fringe. They're popular because they're not a full commitment since they can be tucked behind your ear without clipping off. When styling curtain fringes use a repair leave-in treatment along with a volume texture mist when they're damp, then blow dry straight with a round brush. Shake down with your

hands and let it part down the middle naturally. The Bob Long live the bob. The classic chinlength cut continues to be popular simply because it looks amazing across hair textures. Blunt bobs and blunt ends are having quite the moment right now. They were trending before with the rise of the lob, but now not only is it cute, it's super practical. The sharp edged cuts are helping manage the long stretches of time people are going without being able to see a professional stylist. Prep hair with a heat protector spray or serum before heat styling and straitening to keep it healthy and strong. Centre Parting According to Gen Z on TikTok, centre parts are a symbol of "youth." But let's be real: how you part your hair is based on personal preference. However, the centre part is trending because it's a simple way to transform an existing haircut into an entirely new style. It'll give a new cut a fresh, easy look, too. When blow-drying your hair use the concentrator on your dryer to gently smooth your centre parting into a head hugging look that feels right out of a fashion magazine. Finish with straighteners for extra shine and sleekness. Round and textured Your natural hair texture is always in

No one is helping me I would say I am a chronic depressive person. I have lost friends, but have a good friend who comes in every day to see me and she tries to cheer me up, but I can see she is getting frustrated with me. Some days are better than others, but some days I don't want to do anything. My family are fed up with me and tell me to stop feeling sorry for myself when there's no reason to, and that I am not helping myself and wallow in misery. My GP despairs of me I think, because she is always saying that I need to help myself now. Your longer letter tells me you are fit and not afflicted with any physical ailments, so I am going to suggest a change in the way you live your life. It would help you enormously to help other people. Depression is a very real thing, but it is possible to improve one's situation. Medication only goes some way to helping, but staying in and retreating to your bed every day will not change things. We are living in difficult times of course, but there are still a lot of people out there that need help, now more than ever. Volunteering with a Charity that visit less fortunate people is good. Helping others is a great way of feeling better yourself and will distract yourself from dwelling on yourself and your own problems. style, but this spring is all about really showing off your curls and coils. As natural hair takes the main stage, we're seeing rounder, fuller shapes that really celebrate our hair's natural texture and shape. Cropped and colourful What's more drastic than a shorter length and bold hair color? After seeing Demi Lovato's pastel pink choppy pixie, you'd have to agree. For those ready to fully experiment this is a great time to take the creative plunge. Haircut maintenance will be key here so make sure to see your stylist as often as you can to keep up the shape. The 90’s Flip Many of us have been finding comfort in nostalgia to help get us through the pandemic. Along with bingeing '90s TV shows on Netflix, the decade's beauty trends are making a comeback, too. Enter flipped ends. This is super simple to do with any heat tool,

whether it be a hairdryer, curling tongs or straighteners. It's also a good way to hide dead ends, which is one reason people like it. Prep hair with a shineboosting mist so the ends are glossy and won't separate before taking a hot tool to your hair.

Seatbelt fines up despite decrease in journeys Despite the drop in the number of car journeys during 2020, the number of motorists fined for not wearing their seatbelt has not decreased in the same manner. Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the main causes of death on the roads and according to Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, correct use of the seat belt while driving is one of the best ways to avoid serious or fatal injury in the event of a traffic accident. Despite it being the most effective way to stay safe while driving, the DGT reports that seatbelt use also remains one of top reported traffic infractions. In 2020, almost 2,900 drivers were reported for misuse of restraint systems on two or more occasions, which is why the DGT claims there is a clear problem with repeat offenders. What is worrisome about this figure is that even with the reduction in road journeys in 2020, the number of these offences has not changed to the same extent. According to the DGT, throughout 2020 a total of 870 people died of which 26% were not wearing seat belts (125). In the case of the 2,797 hospitalized, 15% also travelled without the seatbelt fastened.

Behind the Wheel Take Care of Your Hearing that excessive noise levels affect the health of 12 million people during the day and 9.5 million at night, and road traffic is responsible for 80% of noise pollution in cities.

Every March International Hearing Day is celebrated, with the object of raising awareness of the importance of taking care of our hearing health. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO), in its latest Report on Deafness and Hearing Loss, warns that, if preventive measures are not adopted, in less than 30 years, the number of people with hearing problems could reach 900 million people. In addition, according to data from the Alain Afflelou company, in Spain alone, more than a million people suffer from hearing loss. According to the WHO, the number of people with hearing problems reaches 5% of the world population. In addition, this data is especially important among those over 65 years of age, where it is estimated that a third of them produce a disabling hearing loss - hearing loss greater than 40dB in the ear with better hearing in adults, and greater than 30dB in the best hearing ear in children. Hearing loss can be due to congenital causes - diseases such as rubella, infections during pregnancy or inappropriate use of medications -

or acquired - either due to diseases, trauma or exposure to noise or simple aging. In 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified noise pollution - one of the main sources of which is traffic - as the second biggest environmental problem in Europe after air pollution by particles - with a proven impact on health: it causes stress, sleep problems, impaired cognitive abilities, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. According to the WHO, "one in five Europeans lives regularly exposed to noise levels that are harmful to health". For its part, the European Environment Agency (EEA) affirms that exposure to high levels of noise "generates a high risk to human health" and estimates that in Europe it causes 16,000 premature deaths a year and causes stress for 32 million adults and sleep problems for another 13 million. EEA estimates that noise from road traffic, the main source of noise pollution, affects more than 100 million people across the continent, of which 73 million live in urban areas. Regarding Spain, EEA establishes

Rules, Hearing and Driving The DGT (section 2 of Annex IV of the Royal Decree on psychophysical aptitudes to obtain or renew a driving licence) establishes two levels of combined hearing loss index for the two groups of licences. Thus, it requires that to drive there must not be a combined hearing loss between the two ears, with or without a hearing aid, greater than 45% for group 1 (AM, A1, A-2, A, B, B + E and LCC) and more than 35% for group 2 (C1, C1 + E, C + E, D1, D1 + E, D, D + E), obtaining the index of this loss through audiometry. In addition, when a sensory deficit occurs, the DGT requires a compensatory mechanism based on enhancing the capacity of other sensory areas, such as vision. In the case of hearing loss, the use of exterior rear-view mirrors and a panoramic one inside the car are mandatory. This increases the driver's field of vision. It also establishes that there should be no permanent evolutionary or intense balance alterations (vertigo, instability, dizziness, lightheadedness) of otological or other origin. Tips for the Hearing Impaired Driver Those who suffer from hearing problems and need to get behind the wheel:

- If you suffer from hearing loss and driving is part of your work activity, you should always check the arrangement and orientation of the rear-view mirrors of the vehicle you use to improve your field of vision and compensate for hearing loss. - Avoid driving with the volume of the radio / music high, it will make it difficult to perceive the sounds emitted, both from the vehicle itself and from the outside. - Drivers with hearing aids must respect the revisions and maintenance of the prostheses, avoiding that it may stop working or cause acoustic distortions. Before a

change in the prostheses (different hearing aid model), avoid driving until you check that they adapt to the new one. After ear surgery, try not to drive for 3 to 4 weeks. Never drink alcoholic beverages while driving. Professional drivers on sick leave, or regular drivers at work, should know if they incur a legal problem while driving during the sick leave period. Patients undergoing treatment for balance disorders or dizziness should know that the medications prescribed for these pathologies can affect their ability to drive.

Mi DGT App: One Year, New Features miDGT, the application that the General Directorate of Traffic launched a year ago and that allows the driver or the owner of a vehicle to carry both the driving licence and the rest of the vehicle documentation with full legal validity throughout the national territory, has exceeded two and a half million downloads in one year. The application is a commitment by the Agency to digitisation, by offering another way to communicate with the administration, more comfortable, faster and with the same guarantees as if it were done in person. The application was launched at a time when the Coronavirus pandemic paralyzed the country and the application, originally, allowed various administrative procedures to be carried out, such as having the vehicle's electronic technical sheet, data consultation (ITV, insurance, environmental badge ...), consulting your points balance, updating the contact and address information that appears in the DGT records and receiving notices and alerts of interest. Throughout these twelve months, work has continued, and new functionalities have been incorporated such as requesting vehicle reports, buying rates, verifying official documents or sharing vehicle documentation. In fact, since an improved version of the application with these new features was launched in November of last year, more than 220,000 citizens have consulted a basic report of a vehicle and more than 8,000 have acquired and downloaded a complete report, something that is always recommended if you intend to purchase a second-hand vehicle. In addition, more than 13,000 fees have been purchased to carry out different administrative procedures and on more than 8,000 occasions, documentation of a vehicle has been shared with another user of the application. This functionality, highly demanded by the users of the App and common in the case of family vehicles, allows a driver to carry all the digital documentation of the vehicle when he is not the owner. For this, the owner and driver must be miDGT users. According to Miguel Martín, deputy director of IT Management of the DGT “miDGT is the spearhead of the digital transformation process of the DGT, by which over the next few months we will be renewing our portals and offering access to all our services and main procedures in a completely digital way”. Soon ... new features The DGT continues to work on new

improvements that further facilitate the user experience and for this reason a new version will be launched in the coming weeks that will include, among other functionalities, the notice and payment of sanctions, the identification of the non-owner driver of the vehicle in case of complaint, the annotation of a regular driver and a usability improvement that simplifies access to the application. In addition, throughout 2021 it is planned to also include access to the previous appointment or the completion of simple procedures, which are already available at the DGT's electronic headquarters, such as the consultation of exam notes, the temporary removal of vehicles or request duplicates of physical documentation, among others. What do I need to download the app? Before downloading the application, it is necessary to be registered in the cl@ve system, which is the secure identification platform to interact electronically with the General Administration of the State. Then proceed to the free download of the official application on both iOS and Android, with an intuitive and friendly design, to make it easier for citizens to find the information they want, as well as make it easy to access. Once the user has been identified with cl@ve, successive accesses will be made with the fingerprint or the security pattern registered on the device. In addition, from that moment you can see your driving licence, as well as access the different functionalities that are offered to you. The documentation in electronic support has the same validity as the document in physical support for Traffic purposes, but only in national territory, since abroad it will be necessary to carry said documents in physical form. The agents of the authority will be able to know in real time the information that is provided in the mobile and verify by reading a single-use QR code generated by the application itself said information from the tablets carried by the agents and see updated information about permits and validity thereof. Driving licences on mobile phones incorporate visual markings to make fraud more difficult. However, and despite the validity of the telephone support, it is recommended to carry the permits in physical format, since the verification of them on the mobile phone can only be done now by the agents of the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil. Progressively, the DGT is providing the rest of the traffic surveillance bodies that request it with the necessary tools to verify these digital permits.

Elche CF, Beaten by Benzema Last weekend Elche CF travelled by train to Madrid to take on Zinedine Zidane's team in the Alfredo di Stefano, their training stadium. Hope was high among Escriba's men, after spending the week out of the relegation zone following their win against Sevilla. The gaffer opted for the same starting line up, just switching Josema out for the fully recovered Johan Mojica on the left side. The first half passed with little to comment on. Elche held their defensive form, but on the offensive side lacked speed and precision. Real had greater territorial and ball control, but were without rhythm. After half time, the whites stepped up a gear, but were well resisted. Both teams created more chances, although Elche were the first to convert! Tete Morente took the perfect corner finding the space into which Dani Calvo sprung, his header entering the net after hitting the crossbar. It was his second goal from a set piece since the arrival of the tactician Escriba. Elche

were able to dream of a historic triumph. Zidane reacted by substituting on his star players, Modric, Hazard and Rodrygo, which he had hoped to leave in reserve for the Champions League. It took just 10 minutes for Real Madrid to level the playing field with a header from their top scorer, Benzema. Escriba made 4 changes to reinforce the team, slow down the game and to reignite the historic triumph dream. The crushing blow came at the start of injury time, and again from the French man. On the edge of the area Benzema received the ball from the chest of Rodryo, and sent a violent volley with his left foot, screeching in after hitting the post. A cruel outcome for Elche CF, who put on a meritorious

performance against a star studded team. To put things in perspective, according to the Covid downward adjusted salary caps, Madrid are in pole position with a salary budget of 473,343,000€, whilst Elche are in bottom place with a salary budget of 32,250,000€, a difference of 440 million euros. There are two games for the Franjiverdes this week. On Wednesday 17th they will travel to Sevilla for a 18:00 kick off, and on Sunday 21st they will also be back to Madrid to play Getafe at 13:00. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT similar - a nice clean sheet for Mendy.

■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So, Jose Mourinho only looks up the table, does he? If his Tottenham team continue to be so inconsistent then he might want to check the gap between them and those beneath. Are we now writing Gareth Bale off again given this was a game that he needed to turn up for and he spent 45 minutes hanging Matt Doherty out to dry? Mourinho suggested he might have been playing hide and seek rather than association football at the Emirates.

them?

Jose would love the referees to have post-match interviews and I am sure most of us would love to hear what they are thinking. He was honest enough to admit how bad Spurs were in the first half and they did improve in the second half, but only because that’s all they could do.

It’s that time of year where everyone is having an opinion on who Manchester United should be signing - probably because there is minimal faith in their new ‘football director’ having an impact if they cannot even give him the correct job title.

According to Bakayo Saka, Yo-Pierre gets a bit ‘angry’ in training - maybe he got a little bit too angry for Mikel Arteta’s liking leading to the Arsenal boss benching his striker for their biggest match of the season. Arteta seemed to get it right though, Lacazette ‘winning’ and scoring the decisive penalty. The obvious question, and we probably know the answer, is whether it would have been given had Laca got his shot on target.

Owen Hargreaves helpfully suggested that Erling Haaland is the missing piece. Harry Maguire wants the club to sign Ben White from Brighton because he speaks English. Roma’s Mancini is being linked and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is finally prepared to cash in on David De Gea about three seasons too late meaning Burnley’s Nick Pope or Brighton’s Robert Sanchez might be Old Trafford bound.

If anyone was playing Eric Lamela Bingo in the NLD then they would have had a very good afternoon coming on as sub, getting the token rabona in (and even scoring from it) and then picking up two yellows is the absolute full house.

By all accounts, Edinson Cavani won’t be offered a new deal but given their utter lack of goalscoring threat at home to West Ham United they certainly need to do something. Moyes’ loan signing Craig Dawson has been finding the back of the net frequently in recent weeks and he was at it again here, nicking home United’s winner.

Martin Keown thinks the Gunners need four or five signings to become a proper team and rumours are starting to link Griezmann to the club if Barcelona decide to cut loose. Yet, once again, the young players from the Arsenal academy continue to impress - why not just stick with

There were no real upsets at Craven Cottage other than City’s win over Fulham meaning that Scott Parker’s blazer can no longer be considered lucky which could see it being put in

the bin. Sergio Aguero got his first Premier League goal in 417 days and could well be off to Barcelona on a free to celebrate. It was Pep Guardiola’s 16th consecutive away win leaving the side needing a mere 14 points to get their title back. Thomas Tuchel has got rid of Frank Lampard’s famous fine system at

Chelsea, claiming the players are adults. Not so adult, however, that he won’t stop screaming at them for not doing what they are told on the pitch mind you, even Leeds United’s Director of Football Victor Orta copped it at Elland Road. Equally, the pitch wasn’t to Tuchel’s liking and we can only assume the performances of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic will have gone down the same way. It was the first time Chelsea have switched to four at the back in the Tuchel reign and the result was pretty

You can understand why Chris Wilder was so keen to get sacked by Sheffield United this week, given how utterly abject they were at the King Power. Leicester strolled to a 5-0 win over Wilder’s now-former side meaning they are looking good for the Champions League spots after all. Sheffield United’s promotion-winning gaffer was allegedly unhappy with the board wanting to bring in a ‘football director’ though Brammal Lane insiders are pushing the theory that the owners were happy to let Wilder do it any way he wanted but the manager felt like jumping from the sinking ship just as long as he got some kind of payoff. Paul Heckingbottom takes charge whilst the funeral march continues. There’s something in the Merseyside water at the moment as Everton managed to lose at home once again. That’s one win in eight at Goodison for Carlo Ancelotti’s Champions League hopefuls. The real emphasis in that sentence goes on hopefuls if you were wondering. West Bromwich Albion will still be joining them and Big Sham will be chuntering away about the lack of a ‘natural goalscorer’ well into July. He must be living in a weird fantasy world where WBA are playing incredibly nice attacking football in which this fantasy striker would be thriving. The win for Crystal Palace should be enough for them to start planning for another Premier League season, most likely without Uncle Roy. Brighton’s win at Southampton could well have been another game where Brighton walked off the pitch wondering how they had not won but this time, they won. Ralph Hassenhuttl claimed it was his team’s worst performance of the season which is saying something given some of their recent defeats.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Unbelievably, having scored a massive 48 points between them, John Shervell and Petina Murray did not win Monday’s ‘2 ball better ball’. With an outrageous 51 points (just 2 short of our all-time record) it was Dave Pulling together with Olga Douglas who stole the show. It was down to the serious stuff on Wednesday as we faced the first round (of six) to decide this year’s Club Champion. Whatever golf enhancing drugs Dave Pulling is currently taking I want some! With a massive 47 points (yes 47!) he easily won the day and even at this early stage will take some catching. A brilliant gross level par round saw Andy Martin come in with 42 points and with 39 points John Shervell just managed to hang on to the third spot. Two ‘2’s today saw Ron Luffman and Pete Dunn share the spoils. Onto Friday and it was a nice friendly game of ‘Change Partners’. Our unexpected winners, with 86 points,

were Friedel Knebel, AnneMarie Weisheit, Paul Brown and Pat Cassidy. Just one point behind them were Mark Western, Mike Mahony, Benedicte Kruse and the ever faithful ‘Albert’.

Finally just remember, ‘The woods are full of long drivers’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell
