‘Military certificate’ law changed

the Ministry of defence has annulled the preconstitutional law that complicated the sale of property to buyers from non eu countries. A

new order issued by the Ministry has now changed the requirements. the regulations had obliged non-eu citizens to request special certification

in order to buy property in areas classified as of strategic interest for national defence. the law dates back to the late 70s and is well known to buyers from countries such as Russia who want to buy property in much of the Vega Baja, adjacent to Cartagena military base. Many in the industry feared that the additional requirements, and lengthy wait for military clearance certificates, would put post Brexit Britons off buying in the area. Areas of orihuela Costa, torrevieja, Pilar de la horadada and San Miguel were directly impacted by the law as, due to their proximity to Cartagena military base, they fall within the strategic military area. there was

public outcry after the requirements became apparent in January, with industry experts calculating that more than 800 property sales per year would be ruined by the law. Provia, the Alicante association of estate agents, appealed directly to the government to intervene, explaining the damage that would potentially be caused by the outdated law. the regulation obliged buyers from ‘third countries’ (non eu states) to provide a whole battery of documentation, including a criminal record check from their home country, plans of the property to be bought, as well as copies of their passport – all officially translated to Spanish. A relief to many when it was announced on Friday, the new order issued by the Ministry of defence indicates that where the land is classified as urban land, or has been approved in the municipality’s plan parcial, a military permit will not be necessary. only homes on

undeveloped land will need this extra authorisation. Provia expressed its satisfaction with the decision, pointing out that it will pave the way for the arrival of new buyers to the Alicante province. in fact, on Friday when the law had been first changed, the first sale went through without a military cert. up until then, buyers were expecting a wait of between six and eight months for paperwork to come through.

Rock Against Cancer is back! Rock Against Cancer is back! the aim of the initiative once again is to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. up until last year, the event was an annual music festival which started from humble beginnings at Monroe’s Rock Cafe Pub when the popular venue celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009. the event grew and in 2015 went on to develop into to an impressive street party and later, in 2018 and 2019, a full rock festival at the eras de la Sal making it the largest international Charity Music event on the coast. one of the longstanding event organisers Janet Figueroa recalled that the event was well received from the outset, saying, “in the first edition we had guitar player Santiago Campillo (formerly guitar player in the well known band M-ClAn), and also Fito Cabrales (Fito & Fitipaldis)

donated a Fender acoustic guitar with his autograph that was put on auction. the response was massive and the crowd enjoyed all the activities and food trucks in the street.” the organizers knew they could go bigger and better so presented a proposal to the town hall to hold the subsequent events at the eras de la Sal. due to the pandemic, last year’s event had to be cancelled and so the decision was taken to arrange several smaller gigs at a variety of venues – the potential ‘festival’ style event pencilled in for September 2021 in the eras de la Sal is unlikely to proceed this year. Robert Grumheden from Viking, a key organizer this year and in previous years, told us “We know that many are struggling due to the pandemic so we chose to change our approach a bit this year. We now have the motto ‘Being close to you’ which means that we are working close together with local bars and restaurants as well as with local artists to make these gigs at small venues happen. this helps the bars to draw in customers, it helps the artists to get work and it helps us raise funds. So

to raise money, there will be a small entrance fee on the door (€2 to enter, or €4 more to use the pool if you wish). the emerald isle is taking bookings for tables, so there is no need to buy tickets in advance. Simply book your table and make a donation when you arrive. the remainder of the funds will be raised by the raffle, auction and merchandise sales. organisers are hopeful for a successful event and don’t worry if you can’t make it on the day, even if you are in a different country, you can Rock Against Cancer from wherever you are in the world by logging on to the new website rock-againstcancer.org and from there you can either make a donation, or order some distinctive Rock Against Cancer merch which can be sent anywhere on the

it’s a benefit for all. Anyone who wants to get in touch with us can either send a message through our Facebook pages or send us a e-mail on: rockagainstcancer@ outlook.es” the forthcoming event takes place at the emerald isle in la Florida with a whole host of talented acts set to perform from 3pm. there will be mega raffles and auctions as part of what promises to be an epic day out for a great cause. due to the current situation, the emerald isle’s ample outside space offers the perfect venue for the event, so that everyone can enjoy the music in a spacious outdoor setting. At the event, Rock Against Cancer merchandise will be on sale so that you can show your support while looking cool. this year’s lineup perhaps isn’t typical of Rock Against Cancer but organizers hope that audiences will be glad to see that the event is back raising money for a great cause. With a variety of great music from different styles of artists, there will be something for everyone.

planet! Robert, Jan and the rest of the organisers were also keen to thank a number of key supporters, “First of all the founder, Monroes rock bar, the company Viking assistance.es which has been there continuous support and Madcow design for all their help with the merchandise. Also to the venues and merchandise outlets - a big thanks to you all! We also want to thank inGloBA engineers, for making the license project, RentAlMuR, for providing us the electricity generators, Space Support for the sound and lighting, AGAMed, Caja Rural, and some small local businesses in the Vega Baja and torrevieja, like Mediterráneo Consulters, torrevieja Consult, the lounge, Floyd’s Bar, the Royal oak, and the emerald isle, all of whom are supporting the festival.”

Car overturns in Almoradí canal A car plunged into the canal in the Barrio del Saladar in Almoradí on Saturday night at around twenty past midnight emergency services worked to remove the car until around 3am.

Firefighters and police rushed to the scene, and worked alongside local police from dolores and Catral to get to the overturned vehicle, fearing for the occupants of the car but when they

managed to see inside, saw that the vehicle was empty. Apparently, the driver had been able to escape the car of his own accord although he was injured, but no further information has been released in this regard. Fire crews had to request the help of the local water board to drain the canal in order to be able to remove the vehicle, working until 3am on the task.

Highest daily Covid infections since February the Alicante province has registered the highest number of daily coronavirus infections since February with 233 positive cases. Figures analyzed between Friday and Saturday showed an increase in infections for the fifth consecutive day in the province, while setting a new maximum figure in more than four months. data released on Saturday by the Ministry of health showed 233 cases diagnosed in the previous 24 hours in the Alicante province, a figure not seen since February 25th. Given the upturn in cases over recent days the regional health Minister Ana Barceló has pointed out that the citizens of the Valencian Community as a whole “have made an extraordinary effort during all the months that

Coastal path may close hundreds of people who enjoy the coastal walk on orihuela Costa which passes by the pathway in front of Bellavista urbanisation in Cabo Roig might once again have to make a two kilometre detour to avoid a 60m section of path. Back in 2015, the then government demolished a wall which had been erected by residents at both ends of the path to close it to the public. the issue has been brought to court three times and it now looks like the current government team will have to seize the land to avoid the pathway being closed. three court decisions (the latest from the Superior Court of Justice in Valencia) sided with the 52 homeowners and say the private wall must be reinstated as its demolition by the town hall was illegal. legal advice given to orihuela town hall was issued in a technical report commissioned by the department of heritage (according to a report in información). the report concluded that to avoid the court outcome, the town hall must proceed with the acquisition of the land. the local government, at the request of the then Councillor of urbanism, began a file in 2013 to sort out access to the pathway when first a fence and later a wall was erected by residents to block the path. endorsed by

the Supreme Court, in March 2015 City Council workers broke down the gate and wall to open the path to the public. the residents of the ur banization appealed this action and in 2016 a court on elche agreed with the residents, annulling the previous court decision by declaring it proven that the pathway was never public land and ordered the City Council to restore the wall, a ruling that the town hall did not appeal at the time. the Provincial Coastal Service, in May 2017, indicated that the land in Aguamarina is affected by a right of way and, therefore, the residents could not close it after all and must leave the passage free. however, on october 4, 2018, another order was issued ordering the fencing and wall to be reinstated, against which an appeal was filed in Supreme Court. this appeal was thrown out in a november 2020 ruling which stated that the wall was built by the residents in a legal manner and had been done before the current Coastal law came into force (on which the Provincial Coastal Service based

its decision about a right of way). A report valued the expropriation value of the land at 700,000 euros. in order to avoid the payment, the local government proposed to give up a sloped area under the path, which they already owned, and that the town hall could build a continuation of the path there. the coastal authority rejected the proposal. Meanwhile, residents complain that their homes have been devalued by 20% since they cannot enjoy sea views without people passing in front of their houses. orihuela Costa en Acción neighbours Association (Avoca) has expressed its “concern” over the fact that this pathway may be closed again. Avoca also criticized the mismanagement of the matter by the government saying, “the local government has had more than enough time to have started the expropriation file.”

we have been in a pandemic and have maintained an exemplary responsibility.” For this reason, she insisted that “now we cannot break the trend that we had achieved.” Adding that, “We have advanced a lot with the rate of vaccination in the Valencian Community and it is the moment to remain united to definitively defeat the virus.” Vaccination continues at a good pace. there are already 2,688,483 people who have received at least one dose in the Valencian Community. of these, 1,940,051 have been fully vaccinated either with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca or one from Janssen. in the province of Alicante there are 702,299 people fully vaccinated, 37.4% of the total population.

New ban on single use plastics now in force From Saturday, single use plastics have been banned across the eu. Back in March 2019, the european Parliament approved the new law banning single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery, straws and cotton buds sticks.

560 MePs voted in favour of the agreement with eu ministers, 35 against and 28 abstained. the new law is known as the Single use Plastic directive - ( eu) 2019/904.

New recycling target and more responsibility for producers

Member states will also have to achieve a 90% collection target for plastic bottles by 2029, and plastic bottles will have to contain at least 25% of recycled content by 2025 and 30% by 2030.

Plastic residue is found in marine species – such as sea turtles, seals, whales and birds, but also in fish and shellfish, and therefore in the human food chain.

Spain demands Man who murdered mother new safety with baseball bat found guilty measures for Brits uK holidaymakers saw their plans thrown into disarray as Spain announced that British travellers to the Balearic islands would have to show either proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test. the move comes just days after Mallorca and ibiza were placed on the government’s travel “green list”, prompting a rapid surge in bookings. h a v i n g previously said that Brits would not need to present either a test or their vaccination status to enter the islands, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently acquiesced to Angela Merkel’s demands for a common eu approach to uK holidaymakers. Around 60 per cent of uK adults are now fully vaccinated against coronavirus. Sanchez said that the measures would come into effect within 72 hours – just as the Balearics join the “green list”, on Wednesday morning. Shares in easyjet and BA-owner iAG were down around five percent following the announcement. his decision followed closely on the back of a similar statement from the Portuguese government, which said Brits must quarantine for 14 days

on arrival in Portugal unless they are fully vaccinated. Spain and Portugal has become the latest eu countries to impose quarantine on unvaccinated uK travellers, over fears of the delta variant that is widespread in the uK. Portugal is currently on the uK’s amber list, meaning arrivals from the country must quarantine for 10 days when they return to the uK. it comes after transport Secretary Grant Shapps made small updates to the uK’s foreign travel rules. British travellers are facing more resistance from other eu countries, after German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on eu countries to force all uK travellers to quarantine on arrival, amid fears over the delta Covid-19 variant. French president emmanuel Macron has joined Merkel’s push to keep the delta variant out, and said it was necessary for all of europe to be “vigilant”. 27 eu leaders have agreed a statement at a summit in Brussels that echoed this sentiment, saying the eu would be “vigilant and coordinated” in its response to the spread of new variants.

A jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict in the torrevieja murder case in which a man was accused of beating his terminally ill mother to death with a baseball bat. the 81 year old woman, who was terminally ill with cancer, was beaten to death in her own home on torrevieja’s Calle leonardo da Vinci in the quiet suburb of la Siesta in March 2020. the court in elche heard that the man will be sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of his mother, and for breaking the restraining order which should have saved her life by preventing him access to her. the defendant, in order to avoid a life sentence, struck a deal with the Prosecutors office and admitted the crime during last week’s trial. the brutal murder took place at the villa where the man was in residence

with his mother, despite the active restraining order for previous assaults. on up to four occasions prior to the murder, Guardia Civil had to be called to the house after violent altercations. the 81 year old woman was almost completely bedridden due to her medical condition, and weighed only 41kg. the prosecutor said in court that the accused kept his mother in a continuous state of fear and unease with his aggressive manner. Between the afternoon and evening of March 2nd 2020, the man hit his elderly mother repeatedly in the face and head with the bat and then toppled a wardrobe on top of her to try to simulate a domestic accident, a story that he concocted when he himself called the emergency services to report the incident. the victim was considered to be

Guardia Civil to carry out boat inspections

A new campaign of inspections is underway for sports boats, recreational boats and jetskis. the checks will be carried out by the Guardia Civil in coastal areas, reservoirs and lakes until September 15th. A Guardia Civil spokesperson said that “as in previous years, the campaign is is intended to improve the safety of the users of these types of boats and jetskis, as well as that of bathers and people who visit our coasts in the summer period.” Checks will be carried out by the Provincial Maritime Services and the Port and Coastal patrols of the Guardia Civil in a total of 20 coastal provinces around Spain. Among the checks that will be carried out is a review of the navigability certificates, proof of payment of the insurance premium and the qualifications and licence of the pilot in relation to the characteristics of the

vessel itself. in addition, officers will carry out inspections of establishments and businesses offering boating activity in order to educate both professionals and recreational boat users. during the 2019 campaign, the Guardia Civil carried out a total of 4,945 coastal inspections in which 332 navigability certificates, 466 insurance policies and 242 pilot qualifications were reviewed. the provinces of Alicante, Cádiz and huelva were where most checks were carried out.

New outdoor workout area for Torrevieja

Construction work has started on a new Calisthenics park in the nueva torrevieja area of town. the park, which has an area of about 2,000 square meters, consists of two workout areas that have a complete set of different physical exercises, two abdominal benches, jump bars, climbs, triple bars, benches and instructional signage. the park will be located between Calles emil, Santa Petra and Bella Antonia and will be free to use for all residents. Calisthenics is a system of physical exercises that use your own body weight to work certain muscle groups. Carmen Gómez Candel, torrevieja’s

councillor responsible for the of Parks and Gardens, reported work began this week on the site, with excavation and compaction carried out first. A concrete layer will then be added before the installation of the equipment. there will also be an area of fine, double washed sand, for absorbing impact when working out. this will have a weed blanket underneath to prevent any growth. the work is being carried out through a contract awarded to Parques infantiles del levante S.l. for a total amount of 46,821 euros (VAt included), and it is hoped that it will be fully completed by the end of July.

particularly vulnerable, since her illness prevented her from doing anything to defend herself from the blows doled out by her son. however, the Public Ministry has taken into account the mitigating circumstances of the defendant’s mental illness. As explained by a representative of the Prosecutor’s office to the jury to justify a change in the requested sentence, the defendant’s mental state did not annul responsibility for his actions, but it did need to be taken into account. the defendant has a borderline personality disorder that causes an impulse control problem, aggravated on the day of the murder by a mixture of alcohol, medication and antidepressants. the prosecutor asked for a sentence of 17 years for the murder and an additional 9 months for the violation of the restraining order.

New website for rescheduling vaccinations this summer the Ministry of health in the Valencian Community has launched a new link on its website so that people aged between 18 and 39 who have not yet been scheduled for the first dose of the vaccine, can work their vaccine appointment around their summer holidays. the online form does not allow you to choose a specific date for vaccination, but rather to indicate the dates when you are not available to be vaccinated, and based on this information health will adjust the appointments and ensure everyone in this agegroup is offered a suitable appointment. the Minister of health, Ana Barceló, explained that “the purpose is to make it easier for citizens to enjoy their holiday period and vaccinate them when they are available.” on the website (http://coronavirus. san.gva.es/es/web/vacunacion/ calendario-vacuna) persons between 18 and 39 years of age who are waiting for the appointment for their first dose can access a form to indicate the weeks that you will be away and that, therefore, you will not be able to go to get vaccinated. Requirements to use the form... • You must be between the ages of 18 and 39 (born between 1982 and 2003 inclusive) • Not have received any dose of the covid vaccine to date • Not have a scheduled covid vaccination appointment Simply enter the required data and press “VAlidAte”. in addition, an SMS with the link to the web is due to be sent to people between 18 and 39. “From the health department, this measure has been launched in order to efficiently plan the vaccination process during this summer, and thus maintain the good rate of immunization in the Community,” said the health Minister.

Paedophile gamer arrested in Torrevieja Guardia Civil, within the framework of operation Caelum, have detained a 50 year old Spanish man in torrevieja, accused of three crimes of abuse and sexual assault on minors under 16 in Masamagrell, north of Valencia, and Mallorca. Guardia Civil began to investigate a series of incidents in november 2020 when two parents of underage children came forward with concerns. the report alleged that an adult man, through an online gaming platform, had made contact with the children and after trying to gain the trust of the minors, he had asked them for photos of a sexual nature and even expressed his desire to make video calls with them. the alleged perpetrator promised the minors that, in exchange for fulfilling his requests, he would send the virtual currency used in the game. officers managed to discover the user nicknames (aliases used on the gaming network) that the man used on the various platforms and applications, as well as email accounts and iP addresses (the address that identifies a specific device on a network). Shortly thereafter, a third complaint for the same

modus operandi was flagged in the municipality of Santanyi (Mallorca). At the end of June, the Guardia Civil carried out a raid on a house in torrevieja, seizing several computers, telephones, hard drives, uSBs and documentation. on the same day, the investigators proceeded to arrest a 50-yearold man of Spanish nationality, as the alleged perpetrator of three crimes of abuse and sexual assault on minors under sixteen. the detainee was placed at the disposal of the Court number 4 in torrevieja. A police spokesperson remarked that “the complexity of the investigation should be noted, with countless inquiries and investigations that officers had to carry out in order to finally make this arrest. thanks to

this intervention, possibly, more minors have been prevented from being victims of this type of crime.” the Guardia Civil offers the following advice to parents regarding internet access for minors: • Parents must control the access that their underage children have to the internet, regardless of the way in which they connect, through video game consoles, mobile applications, computers, etc ... • There are parental control programs that can be installed on different devices thus allowing parents to have knowledge of where and how the children are connected. • It is best to restrict hours in which minors have the opportunity to connect to the internet

DO I NEED A BANK ACCOUNT IN SPAIN, TO BUY A HOUSE? Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Buying a home in Spain is pretty straightforward. in fact, there are only 3 simple steps to purchasing a resale property! 1. you choose which property you wish you buy. 2. Pay a deposit. 3. Complete the purchase and move in! But what if you’ve never bought a property in Spain before? how do you actually pay for it? once you’ve chosen a home to buy, you’ll need to pay a reservation deposit. the property will then be removed from the market and this will stop anyone else from buying it. the deposit can be paid by credit card or bank transfer direct from your bank in the u.K. however, the outstanding balance will need to be paid from your Spanish bank account. if you’re not in Spain, you are now able to open an account online. Most banks nowadays offer online banking in english, so you don’t have to

worry about the language! Alternatively, if you’re in Spain and prefer face to face service, then it’s easy to make an appointment with your chosen branch. Besides having a Spanish bank account to receive your funds to pay for your home, payment of the utility bills can be set up as a direct debit from this account too. tip: When transferring your balance money to your own private bank account in Spain from the u.K., use a currency company. they usually offer better exchange rates than the banks. however! As the u.K. is no longer a member of the e.u., the Spanish banks will charge to receive the transfer. From experience, if you transfer separate amounts of under €25,000 i.e. €24,999 you should be able to avoid these costs! Be sure to check with your chosen currency company first! GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Well played, Sterling. Are we referring to the football, or the British pound? A bit of both really. despite some patchiness in recent weeks, as we hit the half way mark of 2021, the pound has done pretty well over the first six months. it strengthened by an average of 4.1%, beaten only by the Canadian dollar, to which it gave up two cents. Sterling’s biggest gains were against the safe-haven Japanese yen (8.9%) and Swiss franc (6.2%). Back to this week, and the economic data didn’t send sterling in either direction, but confidence measures were almost all uniformly upbeat. nationwide’s report of a 13.5% annual rise for house prices was not a surprise and nor was the slight pickup in mortgage approvals. Similarly, the 1.6% shrinkage of gross domestic product in the first quarter was close to forecast. in a valedictory address Bank of england Chief economist Andy haldane warned that the threat of a rapid increase in prices was “rising fast” but this, too, left the pound unscathed.the Bank of england’s money and credit report showed mortgage approvals picking up slightly in May. At the same time it revealed a drop-off in the pace of household savings. For the first month since last summer, people borrowed more than they saved. the quarterly national accounts showed GdP shrinking by 1.6% in Q1, leaving the economy 8.8% smaller than it was prepandemic (Q4 2019). the numbers were close to forecast. At the end of last week the pound was briefly unsettled by the resignation of the health minister. it rediscovered its equilibrium over

the weekend when a replacement was swiftly chosen. that equilibrium carried through: sterling was on average unchanged against the majors. in general it lost ground to the safe-havens and edged ahead against the commodity-oriented currencies. EURO the euro had a no more exciting week than the pound but it did have slightly better outcome, strengthening by an average of 0.2%. it was a third of a cent higher against the pound and lost almost one uS cent. Since the beginning of the year the euro has fallen an average of 0.4%, losing four uS cents and giving up just over four and a half cents to sterling. economic data from the eurozone made little difference to the currency. the flash estimate of euroland inflation put it at 1.9%, exactly in line with the european Central Bank’s target of “below but close to 2%”. investors seemed unimpressed: the euro lost ground following the data, though not necessarily because of it. German import prices were up by an annual 11.8% while export prices rose by a more modest 4.2%. the rise in import prices was the biggest since 1981, with a doubling of energy prices mostly to blame. the european Commission’s business and consumer surveys showed “economic sentiment hitting a 21-year high in the eu and the euro area”, with industry confidence at a record high. German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets with uK PM Boris Johnson this weekend to discuss Covid-19 restrictions and international travel in the start of her farewell tour. last week Merkel said she wanted other eu countries to follow Germany’s lead in terms of tougher restrictions for uK travellers due to the delta variant.

Large truck overturned on the A7 near Albatera

An articulated truck overturned on the A7 motorway near the Albatera exit earlier this week. the incident occurred just after 10pm when the truck, which was transporting an agricultural fertilizer, overturned and went through the guardrail, spilling part of its load. Fire crews from elche and Crevillente were called to the scene and managed

to stop the spillage before another truck was sent to the scene to transfer what was left of the chemical fertiliser. After the truck overturned, there were several minor collisions between vehicles that were coming behind and the motorway was cut off to traffic for several minutes. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Five quality ‘Q’ flags will fly on the beaches of Orihuela orihuela’s councillor for Beaches, Antonio Sanchez travelled to Madrid to be presented with the five Q for tourism Quality flags that were awarded to beaches on orihuela Costa. the flags were presented by the Minister of industry, Commerce and tourism, Reyes Maroto. the flags, awarded by the Spanish institute of tourism Quality (iCte), certify a compliance with certain quality measures and are internationally recognised when displayed on beaches and marinas. Councillor Antonio Sanchez remarked that “this recognition is the

result of the daily work carried out on the beaches of orihuela to put them in value and give them the relevance they deserve. they are also a guarantee of safety in the choice of destination by tourists, something so important in these times that we live.” t h e beaches that have received the distinction this year are Cala Capitán, Punta Prima, Mil Palmeras, Cala estaca and la Glea. Requirements for being awarded the Q flag include meeting standards for both equipment and cleaning, as well as security, rescue, information, and more.

Spain’s tallest zip-line beats world speed record A zip-line that opened in Aragón in March with the view to becoming the fastest in the world has achieved its goal – beating the long-held record by an ample margin. When it was set up in the village of Fiscal (huesca province) in the prePyrénéen ordesa y Monte Perdido national Park, the zip-line funded and run by Jorge Rabal was the steepest in Spain with a 400-metre slope and a 20 percent gradient, being 2,036 metres long (1.27 miles) and could reach speeds of between 130 and 160 kilometres per hour (81 to 99.4mph) as standard. But the owner wanted it to become the fastest on earth, which meant beating the italian zip-line that has so far reached a peak at 172 kilometres per hour (just under 107mph). And now, a qualified instructor, with witnesses, has smashed the record by an average of 17 kilometres per hour (just over 10mph). to get into the Guinness Book of Records, and to ensure it is not a fluke, such feats have to be successfully attempted three times and the median average taken as the absolute figure. So although the zip-line descent reached 192 kilometres per hour (119.3mph), the actual record is now set at 189 kilometres per hour (117.4mph), since this was the middle of the three speeds achieved - the slowest being 181 kilometres per hour (112.5mph). Rafael García, a zip-line and flying

instructor from the Girolibre Aerodrome in Aínsa, huesca province, made the three attempts wearing an all-in-one suit with minimum wind-resistance and a parachute for braking. the zip-line cost €800,000 to set up, but Jorge Rabal was expecting to claw this back very quickly, and has not done badly at all to date: even with the Covidrelated restrictions in place at the time of its opening, the zip-line has so far been ridden by 2,500 visitors in threeand-a-half months. Although residents in Fiscal were given a free ride before it opened officially to the public on Saturday, March 20, and some of them are likely to be among the 2,500, non-residents who whizzed down it from that weekend onwards would have paid between €33 and €38 per ‘slide’, meaning the

entry fees taken so far total between 10 percent and 12.5 percent of the initial outlay. even allowing for costs and paying those who work on the installation, it should not be too long before Jorge Rabal’s company tirolinas Pirineos starts to make a profit – especially now the movement restrictions that were in place in March and April have been lifted and summer tourism season has started. As for the now-obtained world record aim, Rabal says: “ever since this project started up, we wanted to do something really powerful that would show just how unique this zip-line is, so we started analysing some of the most famous ones on earth – firstly in South Africa, then in Puerto Rico and then in the united Arab emirates.”

Cold called about your pensions and investments in Spain? By Sam Kelly dipPFS, eFA, BA (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial campaigns designed to educate Brits living in Spain on such matters. Clearly we support legitimate actions to protect investors.

Within the last 24 hours both myself and my colleague working from our Costa Blanca office received a call telling us we had been ‘missold a pension or investment in Spain’! i’m sure you can appreciate the irony of a two high profile financial advisers receiving such calls, but it does bring up more serious questions. First and foremost, Chorus have battled as hard as any organisation in europe to protect investors from low quality pensions and investment advice. We received two major industry awards for

Sadly, i do not feel these cold-callers are conducting themselves with your best interests in mind and there are also strong concerns with regards the legitimacy and legality of these ‘organisations’. the first point to make is in the case of my colleague and i, these calls were illegal. We had not consented to any thirdparty processing or using our data, and when we questioned where our data had come from, a clear answer was not provided. this means our data was being used illegally. Beyond that, the approach itself was not legitimate. this blanket approach of calling thousands of Brits living in

Spain and telling them they were mis-sold an investment or pension transfer is illegal. General data Protection Regulation (GdPR) explicitly states that marketing calls should be for specific needs and not cause undue stress or concern. now if you had happened to have transferred a pension without any issues or concerns, but someone on the end of the phone called you randomly to tell you you were mis-sold a pension, this would clearly cause some concerns and stress. So why do these companies do this? Well firstly, these are not necessarily official organisations or regulated companies, they are often some guy or gal calling from their living room going through online phone directories, linkedin etc, hoping to ‘strike gold’! All they want is your data, and they will

pass it on for a commission or fee to another third party. if you have genuine concerns about an investment or pension transfer carried out in Spain then there are official channels you can follow. Chorus have helped hundreds of Brits living in Spain identify potential problems with plans recommended by other financial advice firms here in Spain and will always provide guidance on such matters. Beyond that you can make formal complaints, go via arbiters and ombudsmen, but what you certainly should be doing is giving your personal data to cold callers. For transparent, qualified and regulated advice on pensions, investments and tax planning matters in Spain contact me today on +34 664 398 702, email s.kelly@chorusfinancial. es or visit www.chorusfinancial. es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

Benidorm one of the most searched for Spanish holiday towns Now that the ‘State of Alarm’ is over, residents being summoned for vaccines are getting younger and lower-risk, masks no longer have to be worn outside and contagion rates are dropping dramatically, Spain as a whole can finally start thinking in earnest about going away on holiday. In the past, most Spanish companies and the vast majority of the public sector shut down for the whole of August and, even though this is no longer practical and workers rarely get a double pay-packet that month now, things certainly do seem to slow down in the country from the end of the school year (mid-late June) until it restarts (first or second week in September) except in those areas that make most of their full year’s living from tourists. Most business premises have air-conditioning these days, but where work isn’t always indoors, it’s generally too hot to be bothered. And too hot for your customers to be bothered with anything particularly energetic. As a result, Spaniards are in the habit of taking their annual holidays in summer, normally all their year’s leave at once (standard practice, harking back to the days of having the whole of August off ), and they love a bit of sunshine, beach and pool as much as any northern European.

According to the Lista de Deseos 2021 report, two destinations are clear winners – even though they are polar opposites in terms of what they involve for a trip during the hottest months of the year. Benidorm is joint top, which may come as no surprise. Its vast urban beaches are exceptional, and facilities close by, as well as seafront hotels just metres from the sands are never lacking; Benidorm has had enough decades to practise at catering for tourists, after all. This mid-Alicante-province sun-seasand hotspot is where holidaymakers head if it’s life and soul they want, and especially if their trip is just about relaxation, sunshine and entertainment. Love it or hate it, Benidorm’s flamboyantly cheesy and colourfully tacky feel is not something it’s ashamed of – in fact, it flaunts it. Benidorm never pretends to be anything it’s not, and milks its long-standing image to the maximum, cheerfully and cheekily. Indeed, if you’re making a brilliant living from designing sturdy, comfortable and hard-wearing hiking boots, why play this down and create lace-trimmed, glittery stiletto sandals instead? This is Benidorm by daylight. When night falls, it’s another town altogether. Bright lights in a cityscape against a backdrop of the sea, music,

cocktails, shows, dancing all night, Benidorm doesn’t ‘do’ sleep. It transforms into a miniature New York- or São Paulo - on-S ea, glittery, exciting and fast-paced. Madrid is the other jointmost searchedfor location for this summer’s h o l i d a y s , according to the Lista de Deseos. And this may seem ironic, given that most year-round residents in the capital will be heading out of it, rather than staying in it, bound for beaches or cool, quiet countryside destinations. Although Madrid is always perfect for a short city-break trip; there’s enough that you really must see to keep you occupied for three or four days, but not so much you go home feeling as though you haven’t finished. Again, Madrid is superbly convenient in terms of public transport (you don’t need a car if you live and work within the main metropolitan area) and shops and restaurants stay open until very late

– and there are plenty of both. As a city, it does not feel like a European capital – many explorers in Spain believe Barcelona fits the bill in terms of character more – but this does mean it’s a little calmer than a capital city in our continent would typically be. Also, its main attractions are close together in a compact centre – a fair amount of walking is necessary to get around them, but walkable they certainly are. Moreover, visitors to Madrid normally speak highly of how neat and cleanlooking it is, and of its classical, stately architecture. It may not have a coast, but out in

the wider region it has blue-flagged beaches, and the enormous, green Retiro Park right in the centre is a popular hang-out on a hot day, with its tree-lined walks and boating lake. Additionally, if the travellers concerned are going four-star, it is very likely their hotel will have a pool anyway, since accommodation of this category in Spain generally does; to that end, they may not feel the need for a beach in any case. And despite being hundreds of kilometres from the coast, Madrid accounts for the highest number of tourists of anywhere in Spain – foreigners and Spaniards alike.

Lynette of Torrevieja asked: how to copy Contacts from one email system to another? To get contacts from one device to another you Export the contacts on that one device to a file on that device. It is then necessary to copy this file to the other devices. With that file (? Contacts) available on the other devices you need to Import the contacts in that file. As an example - to copy contacts from Yahoo to Gmail. export your Yahoo contacts: 1. In Yahoo Mail, click the Contacts icon. 2. Click the More options icon. 3. Click Export (CSV). 4. Enter a File Name e.g. Contacts 2021 To import contacts to gmail: Sign in to Gmail. 1. Click Gmail at the top-left corner of your Gmail page, then choose Contacts. 2. Click the More button above the contacts list and select Import. 3. Select the file created when you exported your contacts e.g Contacts 2021 Your contacts will now be available in Gmail. Sue from La Siesta asked: how to migrate files from one PC or Laptop to another. There are several ways to achieve

this. Here are the most common and easiest methods you can try for yourself. • Cloud storage or web data transfers - You can transfer files from one PC to another PC easily using cloud storage services like Google Drive or OneDrive. You will need to have the same Cloud storage Application on both devices. • Basic cable transfer - A very easy way to connect two PCs is to use a USB-USB cable. By connecting two PCs with a cable like this, you can transfer files from one PC to another, and even build a small network and share your Internet connection with a second PC. • Using an external storage device or flash drives - Just about any external drive, including a USB thumb drive, or an SD card can be used to transfer your files from one laptop to another. Connect the drive to your old laptop; drag your files to the drive, then disconnect it and transfer the drive contents onto your new laptop. Mike asks: What is the difference between Storage and RAM? Memory refers to the location of short-term data, storage is the component of your computer that allows you to store and

access data on a long-term basis... An important distinction between memory and storage is that memory clears when the computer is turned off. Storage is the hard drive where your operating system and files are stored. Angela asked: i am looking for a second hand laptop. What do i need to consider? Things to consider when buying a second hand laptop. Has to be capable of running Windows 10 and it’s successor Battery life. If it’s a few years old the battery may not hold charge when running on battery. Battery performance does degrade over time. Newer laptops do not have easily removable batteries. Storage size and type - older laptops have physical hard drives newer have SSD or semiconductor hard drives. Some have a combination of the two. SSD is much faster to access programs and files. Memory or RAM - get as much as you can afford. Around 8 GB should be good. Screen size and weight personal choice. Newer laptops tend not to have optical drives. If your printer is not WiFi then the laptop needs to have a printer connection (usually USB). Brian hoile, Technology help group Tel: 655191747

Cava academy offers sparkling qualifications A new ‘Cava qualification’ might be of interest to local bars and restaurants looking to up their game when it comes to the winelist. Spain’s version of ‘Champagne’, a sparkling wine known as Cava has its own ‘D.O.’ denominación de origin label, the mainstay of Spain’s wine quality control system. With more than 70% of its sales going to the international market, Cava is the Spanish D.O. that exports the most wine: its 370 associated wineries are present in over 100 countries. The D.O. encompasses more than 38,000 hectares of vineyards and more than 6,800 winegrowers. Now, Cava D.O. has launched an ambitious new initiative: the very first certified online private training school, known as Cava Academy. Open to industry professionals, the online academy was developed following several successful inperson cava training sessions offered in Belgium, the UK, and the United States. The ultimate goal is to turn professionals from every part of the world into devoted cava experts. This online platform will

provide high-level instruction by some of the sector’s top professionals both in Spain and from around the world. The program is multilingual and is available in Catalan, English and Spanish. The training involves audio visual content, interactive

test, videos, and tutorials. The goal is to create an intuitive experience that students can complete at their own pace and it will cover topics such as viticulture, production, quality guarantees, and pairings. It will also include tastings led by some of the most well-known cava ambassadors around, such as Pedro Ballesteros MW or Ferran Centelles. Throughout the programme students will be invited to take part in master classes and virtually visit several

wineries. When students have completed and passed the course, they will have acquired a solid knowledge of Cava, as well as becoming a recognised Cava Educator and part of the Cava Academy Alumni community. In addition, for those who want to go further and earn the title of Cava Expert, once the course is finished, they can submit a thesis on one of the themes proposed annually. Apparently, the Cava Regulatory Board’s phone is ringing off the hook as wine lovers are constantly getting in touch, asking how to learn more about this outstanding sparkling wine. The academy experience will be quite exclusive, allowing at most 40 students at a time. The first deadline for applications is the end of August 2021. Registration is through the website: www.cavaacademy. com The course costs €150 which includes a tasting kit made up of a representative sample of each category of Cava, apart from Cava de Paraje Calificado, which each student can purchase individually if they wish. This year, the selection has been made by Pedro Ballesteros MW

I was invited on a night out two weeks ago with friends. It was long awaited because we’d all been cooped up at home for too long. It was a lovely bbq at our friends’ house and there were other people there that I knew, but not that well. I am afraid the wine went to my head and I had too much to drink. I thought I was in control of myself. One of my friend’s friends made a pass at me, and I stupidly responded by flirting, but it meant nothing and I thought we were just having a laugh. This guy grabbed me and we danced a bit. I admit, it got a bit steamy but I thought it was just fun. It turned out that this man’s wife was furious with me. My friend, the host of the party, told me later that I was in the doghouse and she’d been asked not to invite me to any more gatherings. But I am annoyed with him, and feel his wife should be angry with him and not me. Apparently, this guy is known as a ladies’ man anyway, so I don’t see why I should be in for it. He did actually ask me for my number, but I refused and said his wife probably wouldn’t like it if I did. Perhaps this lady is also angry with her husband, but she has also decided to direct some of her anger at you also. It’s understandable I suppose if she knows her husband is one for messing about. There probably isn’t anything to be done about being excluded from future parties, but I guess the golden rule needs to be ‘hands off other women’s husbands!’.

Diet rich in Omega-3 could reduce migraines New research indicates that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids could reduce migraines by half, especially in young women. The fatty acids, which can be found in supplements and oily fish, have also been shown to have a beneficial effect on the heart. The new research, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), involved 182 people - 88% were women with an average age of 38 who suffered from migraines between five

and 20 times per month. Researchers revealed that the women were divided into three groups, with the amount of omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid - EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid - DHA) varying according to the diet, while the omega-6 linoleic acid was also monitored. During the trial participants were provided with oil and butter formulations and protein foods, including fish, to achieve the varying levels.

Participants also completed a migraine impact test and recorded the frequency of headaches daily using an electronic diary. Those on a high omega-3 diet of 1.5g a day saw a reduction of two headache days per month. Meanwhile, the women in the high omega-3 plus low omega-6 diet saw four fewer headache days a month. Experts from the University of North Carolina said there were limitations to

31

the study, including that it was confined to relatively young women. However, they said the study “provides a biologically plausible demonstration that pain can be treated through targeted dietary alterations in humans”. In a linked editorial, Rebecca Burch, at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US, said the results support recommending a high omega-3 diet to patients in clinical practice.

Vincent Real Estate Plaque 30th June at El Plantio Sponsored by Vincent Real Estate Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 29th of June thirteen anglers made the short trip to fish the Rio Segura in Murcia town centre. The Council with the help of a European grant have spent a lot of money on planting trees etc on this stretch and in full bloom it is like fishing in some sort of ornamental garden. Fishing on this stretch has been patchy to say the least but on this occasion we probably caught more fish than on any other match at the venue .Please remember this is a natural venue with very few stocked fish. Winner on the day, proving what a top class angler he is,was Neil McBernie. Neil was drawn on peg 12 two pegs off the crystal bridge .He fished a 20g method feeder with wafters to constantly catch carp three-quarters of the way across for a fantastic weight of 45kg. In second place was myself Ian Brown. I was drawn virtually on the crystal bridge on peg 13. I fished a 28g guru method feeder mainly with bread pellets and corn tight to the far bank. I had some sort of large snag to my left nearest the bridge, it was some sort of tree but very large and if the hooked fish went left then this resulted in a complete lock up. I lost 7

complete lots of tackle. The fish were up to 3kg in weight and difficult to control. Excuses over I weighed in another great weight of 41.360kg. In third place was Dave Sutcliffe. Dave was drawn on peg 1 the first peg after the first bridge. He fished the feeder and quite rightly though he had won the match with 31.26kg. The pairs competition was won by Neil and dave with 76.26kg.

Rods n Reels The following day we returned to fish the El Bosquet complex. Due to lots of reasons only 12 anglers attended and we fished pegs 26 to 40. The complex as a whole did not fish at all well. Winner on the day was again Neil McBernie, we really do need to distract him or get him some sort of part time job to give us all a chance of winning.Neil fished pellets across from peg 31 for 20.66kg. He was closely followed by Nick Bastock who caught carp from peg 27 for 18.56kg and in third place was Steve Capel on peg 30 with 12.70kg. The pairs match was won by Neil and Bob Rafferty with 33kg . For further details please visit our website www. abbeyangling.es . Also lots of videos of the matches can be found on my youtube Chanel. Match fishing in Spain. Pictured is my peg near the bridge and Richard Wood who also weighed over 20kg and finished 4th. He is seen here without his mask after the weigh in had been completed and his mask removed for the photograph. All covid rules were followed. ian Brown

Unless you were lucky enough or old enough to be around when the English football team last won something (1966, I’ve been told) you’ve probably not enjoyed an international week as much as the last seven days. Unless you’ve been living under the sand or a big rock, England are in the Euro 2020 semi-final and will play the Danes at Wembley on Wednesday. The winners of that one get to play Spain or Italy in the Final. And to get this far, Gareth Southgate’s boys have turned Germany over 2-0 and then strolled to a 4-0 win over Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night. England strolling to a 4-0 win in a major quarter-final. It was possibly the most surreal non-English footballing moment in my life - I recall us making life unnecessarily tricky against Cameroon in 1990. I remember us being dire against Spain in 96. I started drinking by the time we were in other last eights and all the failures blur into one to be honest. Yes, we beat Sweden easily enough in 2018, but this was something else. Harry Kane, fresh from doing one thing right against Germany (that being scoring) was in the goals again. Goals from set-pieces made a welcome return, Harry Maguire moving his opponent out of the way like a Dad joining in under 10s training. That supposedly dodgy backline with an unreliable goalie kept a recordbreaking 5th clean sheet in a row. Luke Shaw owned the stadium that Jose Mourinho will be in situ at next season. And even Jordan Henderson scored. Southgate made the big calls again picking Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips despite them being on yellow cards. They both came through unscathed (though Rice was nearly strangled by Kane) and even rested for the latter periods. He gave Jadon Sancho his first start of the competition - it’s amazing what a big move to Manchester United can do for you, immediately an England starter once again.

It was all rather easy and composed - so much so, the German referee decided to ignore the fact six or seven subs had been made in the second half and called time on Ukraine’s punishment the moment the clock hit 90.

the squad - he wants to beat Arsenal to the £50m signing of Brighton defender Ben White, 23. Arsenal have had two bids turned down and people are urging White to wait for a big club to come in - which, I presume, rules out the Ev.

And so, to Wembley. One thing is for sure - it won’t be the same XI again. The days of ‘not changing a winning team’ belong in the bin with all the usual baggage that England carry in these tournaments.

We all learned the identity of the new Crystal Palace manager when the new Crystal Palace manager accidentally announced himself as the new Crystal Palace manager on Twitter before the club had officially announced their new manager - good work, Patrick Vieira. Something tells me this might end in tears. Whether that is sooner than Frank de Boer’s reign at Selhurst or not remains to be seen.

Whilst everything is feeling a bit too sensible, a bit too good with the England team you can rely on the Premier League to add a bit of circus to the ring. Tottenham, having burned through 15 options, returned to number four on the original list and appointed Nuno. There were the usual press announcement platitudes about “the man to lead us forward” and “the best candidate” but Daniel Levy cannot convince anyone that the ex-Wolves man was his preferred candidate. Connor Coady won’t mind, though he’s immediately being linked to Spurs and is probably badgering Kane into not wanting to leave as we speak. Espirito Santo has been told Kane will not be sold without his blessing that sounds a bit like Levy telling Nuno he was the one to me. Spurs have also offered Bologna a wedge of cash for Japan defender Takehiro Tomiyasu who has also attracted interest from Manchester United - though you suspect United might be in that one for the shirt sales in the Land of the Rising Sun. Credit to the Everton board - they refused to back down to the bullies and went and appointed Rafa Benitez anyway. Rafa’s already attempted to placate the fans who seem to think their club is far too good to take on someone who has won a Champions League elsewhere (even if it was just down the road). If you’re lucky Toffees, this one might not want to disappear to La Liga at the first possible opportunity. Will you love him then? Rafa’s already looking to improve

On the transfer front, United won’t be signing Sergio Ramos (as they’ve been saying all along) as he is off to PSG. They have finally put an end to the Sancho farce by getting him sorted for €75m or so - the only catch being a few other loose ends needing to be tied up. This one isn’t over, is it? They’d also like a new number 9 and after searching high and low across the world have settled on Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin as their ideal fit. Seriously, that new expensive scouting department is earning it’s corn, isn’t it? United are willing to let Donny van de Beek leave the club this summer if anyone is interested in rescuing him off the scrap heap - there’s interest from Real Madrid, who want to take him on loan which might then grease the wheels for Varane to come to Old Trafford. Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Portugal full-back Diogo Dalot. AC Milan are already in talks over a permanent deal for the right-back, so that’s two fairly sizeable European clubs that see something United do not. Massimiliano Allegri has demanded Juventus re-sign Paul Pogba. Come on Senor Allegri, we haven’t got time for this one again, even if Pogba’s contract is up in 2022. Declan Rice isn’t doing a very convincing impression of someone who wants to lead David Moyes’ West Ham campaign next season, turning

Mark’s feeling under par! By the narrowest of margins, with 87 points, it was Friedel Knebel, Mike Brentnall, Anne Marie Weisheit and ‘Albert’ who were our winners in Monday’s ever popular ‘Waltzer 1-2-3’. Just one point behind them was myself, Graham Murray, Pat Cassidy and ‘Albert’.

achievement. Who said the low handicappers could never win? Friedel Knebel (representing Germany) saw his efforts come up short (for his country’s second time this week)by takingthe runners up spot with a tremendous 44 points. Just two ‘2’s; with Olga Douglas and Mike Brentnall both earning a few euros each.

Friday’s ‘Change Partners’ saw Lindsay Forbes, John Dobson, Petina Murray and Andrea Martin take the glory with 85 points. A close second, with 83, were Andy Martin, Paul Brown, Heinz Lei and ‘Albert’. I noted that over a beer after the game a lot of people were making end of the world jokes like there’s no tomorrow! down two improved contract offers and requesting he be kept in the loop of any interest from Chelsea, Man City or United. Liverpool are monitoring Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Ajax’s Ryan Gravenberch as they look to fill a Gini Wijnaldum sized hole in their midfield this summer. If that doesn’t work, Klopp’s weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez who fancies a crack at the Premier League life (and wages, no doubt). Renato Sanches is back on everyone’s radar including Liverpool’s and also happens to be a central midfielder - but Liverpool could face competition from Arsenal. I know, stop giggling. Arsenal need to spend more time focussing on getting Willian off their wage bill but the crazy money they are paying him is making him hard to shift - especially given that Willian doesn’t really fancy taking a pay cut elsewhere, even to Beckham’s Inter Miami. Not content with being linked to one recently relegated England backup goalkeeper, Arsenal are ready to consider a move for West Brom’s Sam Johnstone if a deal for Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale cannot be sorted. Neither of them are Emi Martinez though, are they? Matteo Guendouzi is closing in on a move to Marseille with the Ligue 1 club also expected to complete a deal for Gunners defender William Saliba - meaning the central defender will go down in club history as the mosttalked-about player never to have actually plated for the club. One thing that might happen for the Gunners is Benfica’s 21-year-old Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares, who is close to signing, apparently. Emphasis on the apparently, there. New Sheffield United gaffer Slavisa Jokanovic says he will try to convince 23-year-old Norway midfielder Sander Berge to stay put and not join anyone else - and yes, Arsenal have been linked to him as well. Mind you, so have Liverpool, as he is a central midfielder.

Busters Golf Society Twenty of us travelled south down the AP-7 to Roda golf course for our monthly Stableford competition, being a typical Spanish summer it was hot, and at the very least two bottles of cold liquid were required to drink as we went along. After collecting the green fees, having a coffee, and a rabbit we were ready to tee off, as is the norm Roda had been kept to is usual high standard, the fairways the greens along with the rest of the course were in very good condition, leading to a very hot but enjoyable game.
