Beach-goers in danger at Aguamarina psoe orihuela, the opposition political party, has denounced the on-going situation being experienced at aguamarina beach in orihuela Costa. Last week beach-goers were taken off the beach as it was felt lives were at risk. the cliff face is unstable and so there is a real danger to people lying under or near them. as recently as october 2020 there

were landslides and currently there is no fixed fencing or sufficient signage to warn people of the risk. there is a temporary fence that the infrastructure department has put in place, however it is claimed that this disappears or moves from time to time, according to psoe spokesperson Carolina gracia. the politician is so concerned she has contacted the Local police to denounce

the situation and wants to highlight “the lack of maintenance and actions in this area” to the local community. Carolina grace pointed out that it is not the first time they are forced to denounce the “neglect and delay” of the Local government with cracks, potholes and landslides in the coastal zone of the municipality under the pp’s on-going governance.

“i am embarrassed by our beaches for the people who visit each year to see how the deficiencies increase and those that already existed are still not fixed. We know the government dislikes the fact that we highlight the work they have neglected, but it is a fact. the sinkhole at Cabo roig beach, if it is fixed, will now cost double to what was budgeted a year ago and people

still have to walk around to get to the beach.” in the next plenary session the socialist group will ask about the lack of signage in this area as well as the sinkholes and landslides on the coast. the psoe spokesperson has also raised questions over the state of the promenade that is located just above the cliff at aguamarina beach as the gaps between the construction and the cliffs are increasing and it “has been a year since the Councillor for infrastructure said that a geotechnical study of the area would be commissioned in order to know in detail the true condition and still there is no information”. Caroline gracia said: “What we do know is that the municipal advisers and councillors are here every day and make excuses such as the lack of a budget and when it comes to plenary session they themselves vote against each other, it is time for them to stop these absurd fights and begin to take care of and maintain our coast.”

Child’s play investment for Torrevieja

that under the tender process there will be a number of considerations and not just the best economic offer. For example, the overall design and layout of the parks will be under scrutiny. the contract will include the replacement of any elements that have deteriorated or suffered vandalism or damage due to general wear and tear.

the Local government board (JgL) in torrevieja is making a considerable investment to improve the children’s play parks across the municipality. Federico alarcón, councillor nd secretary of the JgL, has reported that the object of the contract consists of the supply of children’s play equipment – such as swings, slides and

see-saws –along with updating the general infrastructure and surroundings. there are 78 actions planned throughout the torrevieja area. the total investment for the replacement and renovation of all children’s play areas amounts to 1,766,600 euros.

British expats living in Spain warned of tax rises

the spanish government plans to increase personal income, wealth tax and inheritance tax, in order to meet the eu’s conditions to receive €79.5billion in subsidies. prime minister, pedro sánchez says it’s essential if the country is to recover from the pandemic, but it will leave british expats worrying that they will be a lot worse off financially. “We cannot have a public health system like the one we have, and the nordic countries also have financing like we have,” mr sánchez told spanish tV channel lasexta. “it is not sustainable.” the country often tops the wish lists of those looking to retire overseas. nearly half of over-50s who want to emigrate would choose spain, statistics

show. but if the prime minister pushes ahead, it’s about to become a lot more expensive and perhaps also less desirable. the spanish government wants there to be a “gradual increase of the tax system’s maximum contribution base”, which will result in a greater tax burden for those with monthly earnings above €2,400 net per month.mr sanchez also made plans for the country’s “tax harmonisation”, which places a heavy emphasis on wealth, inheritance and gift taxes. Currently the spanish state makes the decisions but the country’s 17 regions have the right to apply exemptions or conditions if it feels they will harm taxpayers. however, this

looks likely to change. a government report said: “there is a need to apply wealth taxation in a more coordinated way between the different regions to guarantee a minimum and coordinated level of taxation, avoiding harmful tax competition between the

Spain stays on amber list the uK has announced its muchanticipated changes to its travel traffic light system, and after increased speculation, the tourist industry here on the southern Costa blanca has breathed a sigh of relief as spain stays on the amber list. it is hoped that brits will now be booking even more trips to spain over the coming weeks. the next update is scheduled for three weeks time. Canada and denmark are among the seven countries moving to the green list in the latest changes to Covid restrictions. Finland, the azores, switzerland, Liechtenstein and Lithuania are also moving to the green list. but while Canada is on the green list, it currently has a ban on british nationals entering the country. thailand and montenegro are being added to the uK government’s red list - meaning they are considered to be among the highest-risk destinations. most countries are on the

amber list. this means that fullyvaccinated adults do not have to quarantine on their return from these locations, but do have to have tests before leaving and when they get back. those who have not had both vaccines have to isolate at home for 10 days, as well as having the Covid tests. the department for transport said the changes were being made to the red list to reflect “the increased case rates in these countries and the higher risk that travel from these countries poses to uK public health”. For now brits can travel to spain safe in the knowledge that their fortnights holiday can be enjoyed without worrying that the country might ‘turn red’ leaving them with a scramble to get home or face paying for expensive self-isolation in a government-approved quarantine hotel. as rates are generally dropping across spain it’s doubtful a red-list move will be a concern under the next

review and with the vaccine programme continuing to teens and school age children a green list move could well be within reach. airlines uK, which represents uK-registered carriers, said the “small number of green destinations “was making international travel “more expensive, burdensome and uncertain compared to other countries”. a spokesman said: “too many families are having to look over their shoulders for rule changes and pay through the nose for tests, with no sign from government that this will change. “as has already happened across europe, it’s time for a more proportionate system where tests are dropped for the fully-vaccinated and from destinations where Covid risks are low, with tougher measures targeted at a small number of high risk countries.”

Mortgage boom

mortgage contracts signed for buying new residential property have risen by 41.2 percent, according to the most recent figures – the highest increase since december 2019, three months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit europe, according to the national statistics institute (ine). at present, home loan figures for the last full month only go up to the end of June, with July not yet released and august still to conclude. but in June alone, a total of 37,961 new mortgages were signed for – not including remortgages or extensions to existing ones – being a rise of well over a third and not far off half the figure in the same month in 2020. the amount of capital borrowed also increased, by 49 percent, with the average loan rising to €140,456 – the biggest since February 2020. June 2021

was the fourth consecutive month where the total amount borrowed was more than 40 percent above that of the same months in 2020. spanish mortgages are linked to the eurozone interest rate, or euribor, which has been in negative figures since February 2016 – a deliberate strategy on the part of the Central european bank (bCe) to stimulate growth and cash-flow across the common currency area, and make it easier and cheaper to obtain finance. almost every since that month, five-and-a-half years ago, analysts have been predicting interest rate rises and the end of the ‘honeymoon’ that has seen monthly mortgage repayments halve, on average, since the worst years of the financial crises. but as yet, rates have been consistently dropping – the

setback to the eurozone economy caused by the pandemic suggests they are not likely to go up by more than 100ths of a percentage point in the near future – and the euribor typically rises or falls very gradually over a period of years, with little or no history of sudden spikes or troughs. also, spanish variable-rate mortgages are reviewed and adjusted annually – sometimes six-monthly, but both options are available – and do not change from month to month, meaning an overnight interest-rate hike will not catch homeowners unawares with an unexpected larger bill. this gives borrowers time to plan – if rates start to rise, they have up to a year to watch their progress and think about whether or not it is worth applying a fixed rate.

Council helps families in need in Torrevieja the torrevieja City Council continues to develop the program for the delivery of food and basic necessities among the many families across the city, whose lives and finances have been adversely affected by the CoVid-19 health pandemic. the department of ngos and Volunteering, led by the councillor Concha sala, have implemented the second extraordinary emergency contract, which saw an initial investment of 780,192 euros. this contract was approved last January, after the end of the first of the contracts that led to the delivery of more than 12,000 batches of food and hygiene products for people

in situations of vulnerability and risk of social exclusion. With this second extraordinary emergency contract, more than 23,000 batches of food and basic necessities have already been delivered. this has been achieved thanks to work of the three local ngos whose volunteer staff has been in charge of delivering the parcels to those in need: alimentos solidarios, Cáritas de la parroquia de san pedro y san pablo and the spanish red Cross. Families with 1 to 3 members receive a fortnightly delivery, while families with 4 to 6 members collect two parcels in the same period. Councilor Concha sala has

pointed out that an average of 16 calls have been received from families in extreme situations by the department she directs, although she has acknowledged that during the summer months this number has been reduced, since some people who have found work, albeit on a temporary basis. the councillor praised the sensitivity of the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, “who has closely followed the development of these two contracts and has even given indications to study the situation of those who have suffered the consequences of the sanitary pandemic and, if necessary, start a third contract for food and basic necessities ”.

At ‘The Hub’ of the Royal British Legion the orihuela Costa and district branch of the royal british Legion was once again delighted to show it’s appreciation to those in the local community who provide us with their valued support. in this case it was simon Williams and Cameron mchardy, proprietors of the hub sports bar in Villamartin plaza, who donated over 500 euros to the annual poppy appeal in support of local veterans and their families here

in spain. simon, himself a veteran of the raF regiment, earmarks the proceeds from the regular quiz nights held at the hub for the poppy appeal, and following the recent handover of the cash he was presented with a Certificate of appreciation by poppy appeal Coordinator eddie Coleman and Fundraiser

tatiana ramsbottom. the branch president, graham rhodes said, “the hub, which is one of the foremost sporting venues in Villamartin, has championed the rbL for several years, raising many hundreds of euros in the process. their efforts have been absolutely invaluable in providing much need funding that can spent assisting veterans and their families who are going through a difficult period. We at the rbL are all extremely grateful for the efforts made by simon and his loyal patrons, particularly during these challenging times.”

Attempted suicide in Pilar

Local police in pilar de la horadada received a 112 emergency call to report that a woman was harming herself with a piece of glass in an attempt to commit suicide. Luckily, her husband has managed to take the broken glass away from her, but in the struggle had sustained several injuries, leaving pools of blood in the communal hallway of the building where they live. the woman then locked herself in the apartment and the husband was worried as to what she might do to herself. When the police arrived with medics, they were unable to gain entry to the building due to the security system, but managed to climb over a neighbouring balcony. officers entered the premises to find total darkness, with all lights off and the blinds down. they opened the door to allow the medics to enter and found the woman lying on a bed having taken a cocktail of drink and tablets. the woman was immediately taken to torrevieja hospital.

Rise in tourism holiday-makers on ‘staycation’ in spain are now back to prepandemic levels – or even higher – in many regions, and although foreign tourist numbers still have some catching up to do they are on the rise. national statistics institute (ine) figures have just revealed that July tourism – among residents in spain visiting other parts of the country – was slightly higher than in the same month in 2019, the last ‘normal’ summer for the holiday industry, particularly in the balearic islands, Catalunya and madrid, and with increases of over 100 percent on July 2020 figures in the balearics, the Canary islands and the capital. international visitors remain below numbers from 2019 – which was, in itself, a record year – but are still dramatically higher than for July 2020, according to the ine. the biggest increases on last year in holidaymakers from abroad have been seen in madrid, climbing 268 percent, and the balearic islands, rising by 223 percent. hotel bosses were quoted in the ine report as saying recovery is very slow, but constant and moving in the right direction. regions whose tourist numbers among residents in spain have increased beyond figures seen in July 2019, before

the pandemic, are the balearics (15.6 percent), Catalunya (12 percent), andalucía (10.3 percent), the basque Country (9.6 percent), asturias (7.7 percent), the Comunidad Valenciana (5.3 percent), galicia (4.2 percent), the Canary islands (1.7 percent), and murcia (1 percent). effectively, ‘staycation’ tourists have been more numerous since before the pandemic in all of spain’s coastal regions. in addition to the soaring numbers of foreign tourists in the balearic islands and madrid in July 2021 compared with July 2020, massive increases have been reported in a handful of coastal regions. the Canary islands has seen a rise of 154.8 percent in tourists from abroad this July compared with last July; Catalunya, by 133.7 percent; galicia, by 133 percent; andalucía, by 120.8 percent;

asturias, by 112.8 percent, and the Comunidad Valenciana by 101 percent. the aggregate sum of both groups – from abroad and from elsewhere in spain – remains 41.5 percent below the 2019 total for the Canary islands and 40 percent in the balearic islands. august’s figures will not be released for a few weeks, but it may be that some of these regions will have closed the gap a little more – the islands in particular rely heavily on the british market, and it was not until 19th July that the uK government announced holidaymakers returning from ‘amber’ countries, of which spain is one, would be exempt from the 10-day compulsory quarantine if they had been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to travel and their home destination was england.

5 THINGS ALL FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS GET WRONG Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! it’s all very exciting when purchasing a property on the Costa blanca! even more so, when it’s your first home! You’re bound to receive lots of advice from everyone around you, even if they’ve never actually owned a property in spain themselves before! but buyer beware! avoid the mistakes other first-time buyers in spain consistently make. here are 5 things all first-time homebuyers get wrong: 1. CHOOSING A HOME TO ACCOMMODATE FAMILY & FRIENDS; Lots of buyers focus too much on accommodating friends and family when visiting. stay true to yourself in what you are looking for in a home. Your guests will only visit for a short time. You’re the one that will be using the home the most, so buy a property that will fit your needs and not those of your occasional guests. 2. MAKING A PAYMENT IN CASH; Whatever figure you have agreed to purchase the property for, needs to be shown in full on your title deeds for

future tax reasons. don’t make the mistake of handing over any cash as this may have a negative effect when the time comes for you to sell in the future. 3. BUYING WITHOUT USING A LAWYER; it is always safer to purchase a property with the assistance of a Lawyer. they will check for any debts and make sure the home you are buying is legal. 4. REQUESTING THE HOME BE UNFURNISHED; this is a common mistake, especially if the existing furniture in the property is not to your taste. You can always change the furniture once you’ve moved in. but remember, if the home is empty on the day of completion, you won’t be able to move in straight away. 5. MAKING HOME IMPROVEMENTS TOO SOON; it is always advisable to take some time to get to know the house before making any major home improvements. Walls you thought you would want removed, may not need knocking down after all. once you’re in the home, you’ll figure out easier what works for your lifestyle and what doesn’t.

Motorway linking France Spain’s teens get pre-school vaccine and Spain to go toll-free

more than half of all secondary school-aged students have now had at least their first dose of the Covid vaccine, with two weeks to go before the new term starts. according to national health authorities, a total of 55.4 percent of the country’s population aged between 12 and 19 – irrespective of whether they are still at school or college in the case of the upper end of this range – have had one or both doses, and just under 13 percent are fully immunised. also, practically all their teachers will now have had their full quota of vaccine doses – even the youngest, since they would have been among the key workers summoned for their jab much earlier in the year. the last region to start moderna vaccines – an arnmessenger version, like the pfizer – for children aged 12 and 13 is galicia. those summoned must have an ‘informed consent’ form signed by a parent or legal guardian, as they are underage, and those who are not yet 12 will be shelved until their next birthday. as yet, neither the pfizer nor the moderna jabs have been approved by the european medicines agency (ema) for

from September

children under 12, due to a hitherto lack of sufficient evidence concerning their safety and effectiveness. all other regions besides galicia had already started giving appointments for teens to get their jab – in fact, many have already fully vaccinated between one and two in five. the balearic islands leads the field, with 41% of its 12-19 age group having had both jabs, followed by the cities of Ceuta and melilla – across the water on the moroccan coast – at 32.5% and 33.4% respectively. aragón has double-jabbed 22.2% of its teenagers, and Catalunya, 21.6%. in murcia, 66% of the

population aged 12 to 19 has had at least their first dose – the best record so far in the country, followed by the Canary islands, with 65.4%, and the balearic islands, at 64.3%. the overall aim was for at least 70% of the country’s secondary school, college, university and sixth-form students to have had their first dose, if not both, by the start of the new term in september, and it was originally announced that those aged 12 to 19 would start having their jabs a fortnight before they returned to class. but with still a fortnight to go, over half are already in this situation and more than one in 10 are now fully inoculated.

drivers using the ap-7 motorway linking France and spain will be able to do so for free from 1st september. the spanish authorities have removed charges for drivers using the ap7, or ‘mediterranean motorway’, while it considers new ways of financing its motorways. users arriving from occitanie will no longer have to pay to use the road, with the tolls between Le boulou in the pyrénéesorientales and barcelona being lifted. the ap-7 transports drivers from the occitanie region of France to spain’s Costa brava. the stretch between tarragona and alicante was made free on 1st January, 2020 and now the 150km stretch between La Jonquera and montmeló is to be made free too. drivers will be able to save €14.80 when travelling from occitanie to barcelona, and the same on their return journey. the removal of tolls payable on the ap-7 coincides with the spanish authorities investigating new ways of funding the maintenance of its 12,000km motorway network. its study is set to continue

until autumn, after which point drivers are likely to have to pay to use spanish roads again. since the section of the motorway between tarragona and alicante was made free at the beginning of 2020, traffic has increased by 36 percent. it therefore seems likely that the mediterranean motorway may become busier still. drivers who would normally take the route nationale to avoid paying

tolls might now take the ap-7 instead. the girona area already receives the densest traffic in the region with 75,000 cars crossing the ap-7 daily. most of the motorways in France are operated and maintained by private companies. however, the tolls charged are regulated by the state and depend on factors such as the company that runs it, your vehicle type and the

journey being taken. While the cost to use some of them remains unchanged from one year to the next, others increase annually and have done so by an average of 0.44 percent according to figures for 2021. every year, autonews ranks the 51 French motorways from cheapest to most expensive per kilometre. the cheapest was found to be the a68 between toulouse and albi, covering 61km and costing €1.50 (2.46 centimes / kilometre). this cost has remained unchanged for the past three years. at the other end of the scale, the most expensive was the a14 for a journey between paris La défense and orgeval, covering 16 km and costing €8.90 (55.63 centimes / kilometre). the cost has also increased by 4.71% over the past three years. For drivers who want to avoid paying tolls, google maps allows you to find alternative free roads via ‘options.’ the new routes will probably take longer. alternatively, google’s Waze app will estimate the cost of the tolls for your journey, relying on users to keep its database updated.

Politicians offer few solutions for Mar Menor the serious environmental crisis at the mar menor saltwater lagoon in murcia, has worsened over the last 10 days with the appearance of nearly five tons of dead fish, which were asphyxiated due to a lack of oxygen. a similar phenomenon was seen in 2019, with thousands of fish washing up after being asphyxiated by the effects of intensive farming nearby. the central government – a coalition of the socialist party (psoe) and leftist unidas podemos – has blamed the regional administration for the situation, claiming that “years of inaction and permissiveness of actions that damage the environment” are to blame. the popular party (pp), meanwhile, which is in power in murcia, is claiming that the region does not have the powers needed to solve the crisis and is calling on the central government to act. speaking after the weekly Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson isabel rodríguez claimed that the “spanish government is fully committed to seeking solutions to what is happening in the mar menor.” but, she added, the current situation “is not something that takes place in a day or a weekend,” but is, she claimed,

the result of “years of neglect” of the powers of the murcia regional government, which is currently led by Fernando López miras of the pp. the conservative group has been in power in the region since 1995. “What needs to happen is for each [government] to exercise its powers,” the government spokesperson continued on tuesday. “the government is exercising its powers and the murcia government needs to as well. this is a major problem.” rodríguez pointed to 8,000 hectares of land having been detected that are using illegal irrigation systems, excessive use of nitrates and the resulting runoff of contaminated waters. the issue, she continued, is of concern for reasons including the environment, the local

economy, the reputation of the agricultural products that spain exports and tourism in the area. she added that the central government is “fully committed” to finding solutions to the environmental crisis, but that it has done “all that it can.” meanwhile, the president of the main opposition popular party, pablo Casado, called on the parties and administrations to stop fighting over the situation at the mar menor and to address the problem. “if there is a solution, it needs to be found now,” he said. he referred to previous statements made by murcian premier López miras, who has called on the central government to deal with the situation given that, he argues, the regional administration lacks the powers to do so.

Living in Spain but still have a UK based financial adviser? By Sam Kelly dippFs, eFa, ba (hons) Managing Partner Chorus Financial

Chorus Financial are receiving an increasing number of enquiries from those of you living in spain looking to move your pensions and investments to a local financial adviser. a number of those enquiries were directly prompted by the uK adviser themselves, who had informed those clients that they could no longer advise them due to brexit. there is a lot of confusion in this area so i will do my best to share what we know so far. before brexit, the spanish investment, insurance, and pensions regulators – the dgs and CnmV – allowed uK regulated entities to advise those of us living in spain through the freedom to provide services regime or by means of an establishment. When britain left the eu, those rights were removed for uK based firms. in preparation for brexit spain published article 13 of the royal decree Law (which you can read here: http://www.cnmv.es/ portal/brexit/FaQ-rdL.aspx?lang=en). Within this, the CnmV have confirmed

that, according to article 13(3) of the rdL, “contracts for the provision of banking, securities, insurance or other financial services, pursuant to which an entity provides services in spain while domiciled in the united Kingdom”… “will remain valid provisionally, until 30 June 2021, in order to carry out the necessary activities for an orderly termination or transfer of the contracts concluded prior to 1 January 2021”. in more colloquial terms, this is saying that for any existing business with your uK iFa, their ability to provide you with ongoing service and advice likely ended on 30th June 2021. this extension was granted to allow time to either end your relationship, or for your iFa to transfer you to an entity that can provide advice in spain. i wanted to further clarify this with the FCa, so sent them some direct questions, and they were kind enough to respond as follows: “Firms intending to do business with persons resident in the eea need to ensure they do so consistently with local laws and local regulatory expectations. Whether a firm can provide services to spanish clients (whether ex-pat or otherwise) is a question of spanish law.” With this response the FCa are stating that it is the country where you are resident that sets its rules, which supports the spanish regulator’s position in terms of

advising those of us who live in spain. so where does this leave you if you still have a uK iFa? Well, the first place to start is by speaking with them directly. it may be the case that their firm have set up a subsidiary in the eu and that through that entity they are able to continue to advise you here in spain. We have also seen several cases where the uK iFa had no idea their permissions to advise spanish residents had expired. For many of you who will find yourselves looking for a new financial adviser because of these changes there are some steps you can take. the FCa have set incredibly high standards for uK advisers, and this means the advice you will have been receiving over the years will likely have been transparent, appropriate and from a fully qualified adviser. You should expect that standard to continue here in spain. in simple terms, transparency means your adviser should go out of their way to fully detail all charges you will be exposed to, and of those charges, exactly how much they will receive. i would expect this to be detailed in both % terms and in monetary values. remember, many products and funds in spain still pay advisers nondisclosed commissions, something that was made illegal in the uK many years ago. this can make your overall fees incredibly high. one big clue is that if a product has a tie-in, for example 5, 8 or even 10 years, then it will be paying an initial commission

to that adviser, and we’ve seen those as high as 8% of your investment value. You should always be offered an option with no tie-in or exit penalties. When it comes to qualifications, there are several bodies an adviser in spain could be qualified from, and all of these have online registers where you can confirm your advisers’ credentials. With myself, as an example, i am both uK and spanish qualified. You can find me on the uK register at https://www.thepfs. org/membership/member-search/ which covers all those uK qualified advisers registered with the Cii and pFs. You can also find me on the spanish register at https:// www.efpa.es/busca-tu-asesor-financierocertificado. again, in spain it is possible for someone to operate as a financial adviser without having any qualifications, so it is important that you confirm the advice you are receiving is from someone who is appropriately qualified. ask your financial adviser to confirm which register they are on and what formal qualifications they hold so you can verify this independently. of course, if you really want to be sure, then speak to a Chorus Financial adviser for a recommendation – this is always free and without pressure or obligation, so you can explore your options and make the best decision for you. Call me today on +34 664 398 702, email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es or visit www. chorusfinancial.es for more information.

Investment contracts are intended as medium to long term investments, and all investments have some level of risk. Figures in our articles are examples of what can be achieved and cannot be guaranteed; the value of your investments can go down as well as up. Fees and charges can vary and will be fully explained to you before any advice can take place. This article should not be considered as investment advice or a recommendation of any particular product.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP sterling’s average loss of 0.6% came almost accidentally. on successive days it was the joint winner and joint loser. there was never a clear sense of purpose and the uK ecostats were never good enough or bad enough to make a real difference. the jobs numbers were good, especially with respect to earnings growth, while the 2.5% monthly fall in retail sales came as a surprise. the pound missed out on the gains enjoyed by the “risky”, often commodity or energyrelated currencies, but also avoided the losses borne by the safe-havens; the swiss franc, Japanese yen and us dollar. neither politics nor the bank of england came into the equation. although the uK economic data were not particularly good, they made no immediate difference to the pound. the provisional purchasing managers’ index surveys produced a composite reading of 55.3, a six-month low: “supply chain constraints hit output growth in both the manufacturing and services sectors”. the Cbi found services

sector business optimism 54 points lower on the month at -17%: the gloom was largely the result of recruitment difficulties. EURO the euro tried hard to pass itself off as a safehaven but could not match the ChF and JpY. it firmed by an average of 0.4%, taking a cent and a fifth off sterling. data from the eurozone were decent enough: gross domestic product growth in the second quarter was upwardly revised to 2% and inflation was in line with forecast at 2.2%. the eurozone’s composite purchasing managers’ index was simultaneously a twomonth low and “close to a 15-year high” at 59.5. in contrast with the recruiting difficulties in britain, “hiring remained the strongest in 21 years”. germany offered a small upward revision to second quarter growth, and a softening of both business and consumer confidence. as was the case just about everywhere else, the numbers had minimal impact on the currency.

Huge shake-up for soap schedules There could be a serious shake-up in store for soap fans after ITV boss hinted at future changes in the schedule. Over the summer, a week’s worth of soaps were released early on ITV Hub during Euro 2020 to soften the blow of schedule clashes. Following the success of the temporary measure, ITV boss Kevin Lygo has suggested that there could be a more permanent shift towards doing the same in the future. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, he said: “On soaps - it’s possible [that the soaps could stream on the hub first], it’s a possible future. “For us, part of the restructure and its effect on commissioning is that we wanted to bring together in one place all aspects of what used to be called broadcasting, so the commercial programming and delivery so that it is more in line with modern behaviour and tastes. “ITV is incredibly successful at getting large numbers of people to come and watch the show at the same time. “During the Euros we saw over 20

million people watching the England game, I think 98% of all the programmes over 5 million people watching are on ITV. We are doubling down on that. It’s more live, more big events, more shows we believe will unite large swathes of the British public.” A full week’s worth of episodes for Coronation Street and Emmerdale were released early on Mondays for four weeks over the football tournament from 14th June. It comes after it was revealed in March that soaps had suffered a huge drop in ratings as Netflix continues to lure fans in. Ratings for the first eight weeks of 2021 have shown that overall TV viewing is down by 9% compared with the first two months of 2017, as audiences are increasingly drawn away by the likes of Netflix and Amazon and by catch-up services such as iPlayer and All 4. But for the soaps, the drop was far steeper. Coronation Street ’s audience has fallen by 19% in those four years, while Emmerdale’s is down by 22% and EastEnders has dropped by 37%.

don’t suppose it affects their life much, but I am left high and dry. My family have advised me to wait it out, when all I want to do is beg him not to leave.

After 40 years of marriage, my husband has expressed a wish to go travelling, ‘by himself’. I saw a change in him, us, during and after Lockdown. I was able to return to work; but he was not and was made redundant. I realise it was his life, and it came as quite a shock and hit him hard. He became quiet and withdrawn for weeks, months. I was aware he was looking

up retreats on the internet; and then came the announcement. He’s been to see our GP and had been prescribed a mild anti-depressant. It’s like he was planning a mini breakdown to pave the way for this withdrawal from our marriage. He will not talk to me about it, but says he needs to do this, but won’t confirm if he will return home. The children haven’t taken it so badly, because I

The only thing you can do, is let him go. Going on this retreat may make a difference and he may come back to his old life, but you all need to prepare yourself for the possibility that he may not. He has given you no guarantees. In your shoes, whilst he is away I would throw myself

in to a life of my own, keeping busy, finding new interests and meeting lots of people. You may find volunteering helps you as helping others is very rewarding. Most of all, try to keep yourself from dwelling on his returning home. You may find him changed when he returns, but he also may find you have changed too.

Life-saver malaria vaccine A ‘game-changing’ malaria vaccine developed by British scientists could save the lives of millions of young children in developing countries. The jab, made by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, was found to reduce the risk of severe disease and death by 70 per cent. Results from the trial of nearly 6,000 children between the age of 17 months and five years in Burkina Faso and Mali surpassed all expectations. Despite over a dozen vaccines being in development for malaria, which kills more than 400,000 people a year globally, there is no approved jab. Researchers

from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) who carried out the latest trial are confident that the World Health Organisation (WHO) will recommend the vaccine when an expert panel meets in October. GSK has not revealed how much the jab will cost but claims it was developed to ‘to contribute to global health’ rather than make large profits. Children in Africa are currently prescribed antimalarial medicines four times each year during certain seasons to guard against the disease.

Document Check During the summer months there is always an increase in traffic controls on the roads, and the simplest way to pass through efficiently is to have all your documents in order beforehand. When you drive a vehicle on Spain´s roads, it is compulsory for you to carry certain documents with you in the vehicle. These documents must be the originals, not photocopies, although a notarised copy is accepted.A notarised version is a copy which has been certified by a notary and contains their official stamp. You must carry: Permiso de Circulacion The Permiso de Circulacion is like what we might refer to as the logbook for a vehicle, which contains information such as the number plate, the vehicle owner and other details. The ITV Card An official document which relates to the technical inspection of the vehicle, the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV. Some very new cars may not have this card as it is gradually being replaced by a centralised computer system, but if your car has one, it must be carried. ITV Report Once your vehicle is 4 years old it will have to undergo the mandatory ITV test. The ITV report details what happened during that inspection. There are also some documents which are not compulsory, but it is advisable that you carry them with you

too.

Insurance Policy Carrying the insurance policy is NOT compulsory as the information is contained on a central computer, however, if you are involved in an incident you will need to know your policy details for the Accident Agreement, to exchange details with others involved. European Accident Agreement Again, it is not compulsory to carry the European Accident form, but it is advisable as it will help you ensure data is recorded correctly in the event of an incident. The forms are available in multiple languages and a laid out the same, so it also makes it easier for bridging language gaps. It is also not compulsory to carry the information relating to the annual tax paid to municipal town halls. You, as the driver, must also carry your driving licence. It is a criminal offence in Spain to drive without a licence and the burden of proof is on you. If you are caught without your licence you may well find yourself arrested. Remember, it is mandatory that the documents you carry are the originals, not photocopies. The only copy that is allowed is one that has been stamped and certified by a Notary. Notarised copies of documents are allowed. There is also now an app available for your mobile phone, Mi DGT, in which your vehicle logbook and driving licence can be securely accessed. These versions are also as valid as the originals.

Flags and their meanings

As the La Vuelta cycle race returned to our local roads recently, it seems appropriate to look at the meaning of the coloured flags displayed by the accompanying Guardia Civil motorcycles. It is not just during events like a cycle race that flags are used, they can be used at any time on the roads, so it is important we know the different meanings. Red flag The red flag indicates that the road beyond the vehicle carrying it is closed to traffic, except for those authorised to proceed. You must not pass a vehicle carrying a red flag. Green flag The green flag indicates that the road is open again and normal rules of passage apply. Yellow flag The yellow flag indicates the need for extreme caution as there may be an approaching danger. This flag is also used for road-based events such as cycle races when extreme caution is also required.

equalizer being scored with a hammer of a header by En-Nesyri. The second half continued with a similar intensity and a determination from both sides to gain the advantage. Sevilla attacked, making a triple substitution to the forward part of the field with 30 minutes to go. Elche defended, taking several causalities and using their substitutes to shore up gaps. A well and hard fought 1 point for the locals, and 2 points lost for their visitors in their quest for taking top position. Following an international break, Elche will travel away to Getafe on Sunday 12th September for a 18:30 kick off. The following weekend they will take on Valencia based Levante at home, giving you the opportunity to join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for 11€ to the Martinez Valero.

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY La Marquesa

Seventeen members and guests from Alfie’s Golf Society played at La Marquesa in the eighth round of our annual competitions. The course was in good condition, the bunkers were reasonable, and the greens were slow. The weather was hot and sunny, so good scores were forecast, and achieved.

Runner up in the Silver Division went to Paul Skillet with 39 points, playing off a handicap of 26. The winner of the Gold Division was Dave Steward with 37 points, playing off a handicap of 20. Runner up in the Gold Division was Steve Barlow with 35 points, playing off a handicap of 18.

For the first time in 18 months and since their promotion to La Liga, a EuroTourGuide Coach load of fans were able to travel to the Martinez Valero to support Elche CF. Just over 10,000 fans saw their team put the breaks on Sevilla, denying the visitors 3 points for the first time this season. The first few minutes were nervous ones, with the Andalusians having several excellent chances. On the 11th minute Fidel managed to snatch the ball and with Sevilla being caught off guard and badly positioned, he passed inside to central Enzo Roco, resulting in Elche taking the lead. This sent Sevilla into free fall and Elche enjoyed a period of dominance that ended when Mojica made a great cross to Benedetto who headed it wide to miss a golden opportunity. This invigorated Lopetegui’s men and on the 40th minute resulted in the

Our winner of the Silver Division and our overall winner on the day Bob Chambers with 41 points, playing off a handicap of 26.

TALES FrOM THE TOP FLIGHT n chris darwen chris@costablancapeople.com

Oh, this is the week I just get allocated 500 words. You know, just the week Cristiano Ronaldo reappears at Old Trafford, ready to either enhance his Premier League legacy or somewhat tarnish it. But no worries, it’s not as if Liverpool versus Chelsea had anything interesting to mock or Arsenal completely self-combusted against City or anything. It’s not as if Daniel Levy is dancing a silly dance of transfer-war joy having beaten Harry Kane into staying at Spurs in the last seven days. It’s not as if anything untoward occurred at the Etihad in the last week. So he is back - but not on the side of Manchester most people thought he’d be rocking up to on Friday morning. Depending on who you believe, Ronaldo resigning for Manchester United was the work of Rio Ferdinand, Patrick Evra, the Glazers looking to buy themselves a longer reprieve from protests or Brunaldo - though I am not sure we can continue to call him that if Ronaldo is actually playing for the same team. The biggest question is not around how he will fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s non-existent tactical framework, of course. It’s all about what number he will wear as he’s

Sport

CostaBlancaPeople 31st August - 6th September 2021

not allowed to take Edinson Cavani’s number seven now that the season has started. Fantasy Football managers all over the world are in meltdown having invested big on Bruno Fernandes will the Portuguese midfielder have to hand over all set pieces now to Cristiano? The thing is, Brunaldo gets them on target once in a while, you know - Ronaldo, not as often as you might think. Yikes - halfway through already. Mikel Arteta assures us he is having a look at himself after Arsenal were royally spanked by a Kaneand-Ronaldo-less Man City 5-0. He might want to start by looking at which planet he was on thinking that

Holding, Chambers and Kolasanic would be able to stop City’s attack. And then have a peek at why he felt Granit Xhaka was trustworthy and worth a new deal. Then maybe at why Cedric is his first choice right-back currently. City were rather good, however far better than Peppy G’s sweatshirt. I mean, what was that on the back? Some kind of plea for help? A perfectly good game of football at Anfield was ruined by a referee daring to only briefly look at the VAR screen and realise his big boo-boo in not seeing Reece James’ arm move to the ball to stop it going in. A penalty and red card followed (correctly, correctly) meaning that the second-half was a case of stoic Chelsea defending and

frustrating Liverpool attacking. Still, 1-1 was probably a fair result and most judges would have had Virgil van Dijk vs Romelu Lukaku in the heavyweight division down as a split decision, probably to VVD.

37

And so, a mere fortnight into the new season, players that are allowed to disappear to their international teams are off - many with their phones on to see if they can get that deadline day payday of a move.
