The N’YOU MARKET towards a cohesive neighbourhood Scaled Transformation of the Nuovo Mercato Esquilino, Rome Costanza Botti Vincent Chukwuemeka MAIG 24
-ABSTRACT-
The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino is located in the historical center of Rome and currently, replaces the previous role of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. This square previously hosted one of the biggest street markets in the city and was at its peak during the 19th century. Nuovo Mercato Esquilino was later reconfigured as an enclosed formal market in the new location. Since this switch of location, the square has lost its relevance due to the absence of commercial activities. The remaining street vendors, who previously obtained source of livelihood continuously face the threat of eviction. At the same time the new market is affected by the architectonic dimension of the two buildings in which it takes place. The quality of the spaces, notably and relevant, loses importance due to the closed facades and barricade of the surrounding streets by fences. A less tangible, dynamic, but perhaps more urgent attribute of the place, is the cultural melting pot of the area. The proximity of the central railway station has contributed to the transformation of the neighbourhood into one of the main landing point for foreigners and migrants, thereby activating different kinds of economy, and characterizing the market as the most international of the city. Consequently, the daily city life in this part of Esquilino district is currently witnessing a flight of most members of local community, citing negative feelings about this phenomenon and associated security concerns. Additionally, there is a university faculty in one of the market’s building and the lack of collective spaces within the new market complex misses the opportunity to harness the power of the youthful university students to inject a convivial atmosphere in the neighbourhood. The aim of this project is to introduce an architectural intervention on several scales, capable of addressing the identified challenges. The project proposes a revitalization of the market by transforming it into a more open location, and provision of new kind of spaces for cross cultural dialogues in the neighbourhood. The edges of the market are redesigned, creating different degrees of permeability, identity of place and seamless wayfinding between market premises and the square. The reorganization of the open areas of the buildings would provide a collective space for multiplicity of uses, and several new units for street vendors. The nexus formed between these different units of public space in the neighbourhood will encourage a re-introduction of weekly markets and other placemaking initiatives towards a resilient and sustainable neighbourhood.
