FIRST AID Occupational First Aid Level 1 When accidents happen, you need to be able to handle the situation. This seven-hour program equips you with emergency skills needed to stabilize an injured person until trained help arrives. Areas covered include: bleeding control, CPR and AED, and conscious and unconscious choking. Upon completion you receive a certificate that is valid for three years. Course fee includes the book. Occupational First Aid Level 2 If you are in a position where WorkSafeBC OFA regulations require certification to the OFA Level 2, this is the program for you. Primarily designed for the urban first aid attendant, this five-day course takes you through the basics of airway, breathing and circulation, preparing you to deal with obstructed airways, breathing distress, bleeding control, shock and CPR. Patient assessment, upper limb splinting and minor wound care are also covered. Certificate is valid for three years. Occupational First Aid Level 3 The ultimate course in first aid! Recognized in both Alberta and BC, this course prepares you to take on the responsibilities of the first aid attendant providing emergency care in your industry and covers a variety of emergency medical techniques. Emergency Medical Responder The EMR course is for BC Occupational First Aid Level 3 attendants who wish to upgrade their skills to become an EMR attendant for the ambulance service and prepares the candidate for the provincial examination. This course meets the NOCP guidelines as set out by the Paramedics Association of Canada. Note that most employers in the North are asking for minimum of EMR. Note: You must pick up books at your local campus and complete pre-course work before the first class. Prerequisite: Candidates must be 19 years of age, hold a valid OFA Level 3 certificate or equivalent, preferably issued within the previous six months. St. John Standard for Industry Designed for Industry, oil patch workers, nursing students, health care professionals and general public requiring Standard First Aid certification OFA Level 1 Equivalent, this dual certificate prepares you to offer first aid at the scene of an accident without special equipment and professional medical help. Successful completion provides you with both a St. John Standard First Aid OFA Level 1 equivalent, along with CPR-C with AED valid for three years. This course meets first aid requirements for WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1, Canada Labour Code, Standard First Aid and Emergency First Aid - Community Care. Red Cross Babysitting Course The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course, refreshed and revised, now has a greater emphasis on First Aid skills. This course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. Babysitting promises to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. This updated curriculum, complete with new science, also provides improved learning when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency. Ages 11-15. Basic Fall Protection This eight-hour course includes theory and practical application exercises to introduce the student to standards for fall protection which meet or exceed both Alberta and BC OH&S standards. This program teaches all core concepts of fall protection from a regulatory and standards perspective including: fall protection requirements for workers and employers, hierarchy of fall protection, methods of hazard identification, examining various fall protection and fall arrest systems, equipment care and maintenance, and understanding the ABCs of a personal fall protection system. Learn the basic workings of a kitchen, from equipment recognition and use, cleaning and sanitation processes and commercial dishwashing, to receiving and storage practices. The program covers hands-on practice including knife skills, recipe execution and conversion, measuring, temperature taking and recording, fire safety and what to do when faced with an incident or accident. This Kitchen Assistant program will also cover communication, working within a team and how to prioritize in a kitchen, giving you the critical skills the restaurant industry is seeking. Activity Assistant Program The Activity Assistant Program is designed to provide post-graduate continuing education for individuals with previous health care education (Health Care Assistants, Resident Care Aides) and experience. The course is designed to provide participants with the concepts and practical skills to deliver activities to clients/residents experiencing cognitive and physical challenges. Students are provided opportunities to develop knowledge, skills and values necessary to plan and implement, with supervision, individual and group activities for older adults in continuing, long-term care and rehabilitation settings. This on-line program is delivered part-time over an 11-month period, allowing most students to continue working while taking the program. Cannabis Retail Fundamentals (CRS 100) This 13-week online course is designed to provide participants with background training for employment in the emerging cannabis industry. Students will be introduced to the history of cannabis use, plant morphology/ physiology and the cannabis growth cycle, nutrition and factors affecting absorption, current Cannabis Regulations in Canada and the active chemical constituents in cannabis.

Cannabis Retail Applications (CRS 101) This course is comprised of 11 weeks of online study followed by a 40-hour practicum and follows immediately from Cannabis Retail Fundamentals. It is designed to provide the specific knowledge and skills needed for employment in a licensed retail cannabis outlet or related enterprise. Students will learn the medicinal benefits of cannabis identified by Health Canada and clinical trials, species and strain characteristics, methods of preparation and administration, and customer service/client care roles and responsibilities. The practicum portion requires 40 hours of on-site experience in a retail cannabis outlet or related facility. Note: Practicum placement location will be the responsibility of the student.

Payroll Increase your payroll knowledge and confidence! Amanda is a past president of the Richmond Beekeepers Association, the largest bee association in the Lower Mainland. Jeff is the First Vice-President of the BC Honey Producers Association. They are both certified instructors under the BCHPA Certified Instructors program designed to ensure quality education for beginning beekeepers. Master beekeepers Amanda Goodman Lee and Jeff Lee own and operate Swan Valley Honey Ltd. and Honey Bee Zen Apiaries Ltd., two large honey-producing and pollination companies based in Creston. OUTDOORS NEW! Introduction to Bird Finding and Identification From backyard feeders to the Creston Valley’s worldclass wetlands, this course is designed to provide you with the basic skills to find and identify wild birds. This course will cover topics such as bird structure, plumage, songs and behaviour to help you learn to make the right ID. The class will also explore the role of habitats and learn about birding in different seasons. The course will include trips to wildlife areas to put your new birding skills into practice during spring migration. Note: Students must have their own transportation to the wildlife center each class. Students will need to bring binoculars. No class on April 11th for Easter weekend. Meet Paul Foth: Paul is an experienced birder with a contagious love for birds. Before moving to Creston (for the birds of course), Paul was a moderator with the Fraser Valley Birding community. While not birding around BC, he is a scholar of religious history.

Avalanche Skills Training 1 Each year increasing number of skiers, snowboarders and climbers venture into the mountains to enjoy snow-related outdoors recreation. Regrettably, each year some of these people die in avalanches. Avalanche Skills Training (AST) programs are an essential first step to safe backcountry use in the winter. Course topics include avalanche terrain recognition, avalanche climatology, snow stability evaluation, alpine touring practices, avalanche accidents and search and rescue techniques. This course is instructed by a qualified CAA Professional Member. Class size is limited. Notes: For field trip to the Kootenay Pass summit, students will provide own transportation and ski pass. Wildlife Track Identification Join our local Conservation Officer, James Barber, while he teaches you how to identify wildlife in the winter through tracks they leave in the snow. Included are large ungulates such as moose, elk, caribou and deer, predators such as wolf, coyote and cougar, as well as smaller furbearers such as marten, muskrat and raccoon. It can help the hunter to identify prime habitats and wildlife corridors or supply the outdoor recreationalist with valuable information while snowshoeing or hiking in the back country. This one-day course will be in the class and in the field. Participants will require transportation to the site chosen for the field trip; carpooling would be appreciated. Fifty percent of your tuition will be donated to Ducks Unlimited Kootenay Chapter, approximately $50 donation per student. ADULT UPGRADING Adult Upgrading is designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be successful in employment situations and in further education. You can complete individual courses to meet prerequisite needs or to earn your Adult Graduation diploma. The program is flexible to individual need and ability, and students can fit classes and study into their work and personal schedule.
