FIRST AID COURSES Recognized by WorkSafeBC and all industries, attaining your First Aid certification increases your employability with all employers during these uncertain times. College of the Rockies is the largest First Aid trainer in the East Kootenay with face to face classes available at all campuses.
Occupational First Aid Level 1 – $125 PVHE-100 | In-Class When accidents happen, you need to be able to handle the situation. This seven-hour program equips you with emergency skills needed to stabilize an injured person until trained help arrives. Areas covered include: bleeding control, CPR and AED, and conscious and unconscious choking. Course fee includes the book. Upon successful completion, students receive a WorkSafeBC OFA Level 1 Certificate, valid for three years.

Emergency Medical Responder – $995 + textbook PVHE-315 | In-Class The EMR course is for BC Occupational First Aid - Level 3 attendants who wish to upgrade their skills to become an EMR attendant for the ambulance service and prepares the candidate for the provincial examination. This course meets the NOCP guidelines as set out by the Paramedics Association of Canada. Note that most employers in the North are asking for minimum of EMR. Note: You must pick up books from your local campus and complete pre-course work before the first day of class. Prerequisites: Candidates must be 19 years of age, hold a valid OFA 3 certificate or equivalent, preferably issued within the previous six months.

Recognized in both Alberta and BC, this course prepares you to take on the responsibilities of the first aid attendant providing emergency care in your industry and covers a variety of emergency medical techniques. Out of Jurisdiction – EMALB Licensees – $199 PVHE-221 A license-holder with the Emergency Medical Association Licensing Board may obtain a WorkSafeBC OFA certification, based on license level and upon completion of an Out of Jurisdiction package. Candidates must submit a copy of their EMA License and a letter from the EMALB stating that they are a member in good standing on or before registration. An OFA Statement of Fitness and Out of Jurisdiction Certification application must also be completed and signed. This replaces the previous WorkSafeBC Paramedic in Industry certification. Transportation Endorsement – $125 PVHE-301 | In-Class As a compliment to the WorkSafeBC OFA Level 1 certificate, this course meets the needs of those responsible for transporting injured workers to medical aid from more remote settings (greater than 20 minutes transport time). This endorsement is not valid unless presented with a current WorkSafeBC OFA level 1 Certificate or equivalent. Prerequisite: Current WorkSafeBC OFA Level 1 or equivalent. Mental Health First Aid – $249 Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trained employees will be equipped to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and provide help to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis, including those related to substance use. The course will also work on reducing the stigma around mental illness and create mental wellness within the workplace. Participants will receive a handbook, a MHFA basic (12-hour) certificate of Participation issued by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and be registered as a Mental Health First Aid Responder with the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Red Cross CPR-C – $125 PVHE-210 | In-Class This course on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provides the skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults, children and babies. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards, and includes the latest CPR guidelines and training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) – $125 PVHE-140 | In-Class Basic Life Support (BLS) is an important step in the survival of a person who suffers a cardiac arrest incident. The Canadian Red Cross BLS course is designed for in-facility and pre-hospital care providers, to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, rapid defibrillation, as well as oxygen therapy and airway management. Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid – $329 PVHE-117 | In-Class This 20-hour Wilderness and Remote First Aid course covers material in Standard First Aid and CPR, plus special material on techniques for wilderness and remote areas. Course also offers strategies for providing extended care for up to 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training. Suitable for those who work or live in remote locations or who are outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid CPR Level C/ AED certificate, valid for three years. Note: Over 25 percent of the course is taught in a non-urban setting; dress for the weather.

This 40-hour Advanced Wilderness and Remote First Aid course covers material in Standard First Aid and CPR plus advanced strategies for providing extended care for more than 24 hours. Part of the course is taught in an outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity and endurance than typical first aid training. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Red Cross Advanced Wilderness and Remote First Aid CPR Level C/AED certificate, valid for three years. Wilderness Advanced First Aid – $525 PVHE-234 | In-Class An entry-level four-day course, Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) offers comprehensive medical training designed for wilderness leaders and professionals venturing into remote and challenging environments, or for those working or recreating in the backcountry for periods of days to weeks. Manage medical emergencies when hospitals and rescue services are not available for an extensive time period. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Wilderness Medical Associates International Wilderness Advanced First Aid certificate with adult CPR, valid for three years. Wilderness First Responder – $925 PVHE-232 | In-Class Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the most current and cutting-edge course of any first response medical training (urban or remote) in the world. WFR is a definitive wilderness course in medical training, leadership and critical thinking for outdoor, low-resource and remote professionals and leaders. This 80-hour program provides medical training for professional guides, outdoor educators, military, professional search and rescue team members and for those who travel and play in remote areas. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Wilderness Medical Associates International Wilderness First Responder Certificate which is valid for three years and includes anaphylaxis and CPR taught to an equivalent Basic Life Support level. Wilderness First Responder – Recertification – $525 (Wilderness Advanced First Aid Bridge) PVHE-233 | In-Class Need to recertify? The four-day Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) Bridge course will recertify all current Wilderness First Responders and Wilderness Advanced First Aiders. A completed precourse study guide is required prior to course start. You will receive a course ID number and password to access your pre-course material upon registration. If you are certified through another wilderness medical training provider, you may ‘bridge’ to a WFR certification provided your certification was at least 64 hours in length and achieved or recertified within the last three years. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive a Wilderness Medical Associates International Wilderness First Responder Certificate which is valid for three years and includes anaphylaxis and CPR taught to an equivalent Basic Life Support level. Chainsaw Operation – $369 PVIN-692 | In-Class and In-Field Learn the basics of chainsaw operation, safety and maintenance. This two-day course covers the proper safety gear needed, safe work procedures, daily maintenance of chainsaw and/or brush saw, small diameter tree falling, bucking and limbing, cleaning and inspection of saw, minor troubleshooting and chain filing. Come prepared to use equipment. Theory and field exams will be conducted. Class 3 Commercial Driver PVIN-102 | In-Class This 24-hour training course, created for drivers who want to learn the correct and safe operation of a tandem axle truck, gravel truck, vacuum truck, large tow truck, or garbage/recycling truck. Food Safety for Food Handlers – $125 PVPS-109 | Online The Food Safety for Food Handlers online course is recognized as the online equivalent to FOODSAFE Level 1 in BC and covers important regulatory requirements in food safety and worker safety. The course work provides practice questions and real life scenarios, all of which are online. A minimum of six hours is spent in the course, followed by the final quiz, which is also online. Access to the course is available 24/7. The course and the final quiz must be completed within 30 days of starting. Upon successful completion, students will receive a KnowledgeWare Food Safety for Food Handlers online certificate, valid for five years. Haul Truck Operator Program – $7500 PVIN-220 | In-Class This four-week program offers an introduction to safe and efficient operation of a haul truck in a surface mining or oil sands site. Haul truck operators are in demand in mines across Canada, including the Alberta oil sands. Haul truck operator is the common entry-level job in a mine site. Utilizing stateof-the-art motion-based simulators, classroom-led and online modules include safety and operating procedures, warning systems and protocols, assessing and reacting to alarms, emergency scenarios, walk-around inspections and cab controls, start-up, shutdown, braking, steering, tire care, dumping and loading procedures. Our program uses simulators for both Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks, which are most commonly used in large surface pit operations in Canada. The program includes instruction in the following safety tickets: Mine Supervisor Certificate (Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC), Standard First Aid for Industry (two-day), WHMIS and Construction Safety Training System (CSTS). Prerequisite: Age 18, Grade 12 or equivalent, valid Class 5 Driver’s License, declaration of physical ability to climb a ladder and informational conversation with HTO lead instructor.

Traffic Control – $499 PVIN-106 | In-Class The BC Construction Safety Alliance’s (BCCSA) comprehensive, two-day standardized course for Traffic Control Persons (TCPs) consists of classroom and practical training and is the only program of its kind accepted by WorkSafeBC under Section 18 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation for high-risk traffic control. This two-day training session has been designed to qualify those who work as high-risk TCPs throughout the Province of BC. Upon successful completion, TCPs are provided with a three-year BCCSA certification. To requalify, TCPs must complete the one-day requalification course. To successfully complete the course, the participant must pass both the written exam with a minimum mark of 80% and the practical evaluation with 100%.
