FIREARMS CERTIFICATIONS Canadian Firearms Safety Course (PAL) – $125 + GST GIRE-104 | In-Class Are you applying for a Possession and Acquisition License? Get the needed firearms training with this course, focusing on non-restricted firearms such as rifles and shotguns. The course covers safety, operations and handling. By law students must be at least 12 years old when signing up for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. Note: Must bring ID.

Make sure you possess the knowledge and skills needed to be a safe and ethical hunter by taking the CORE (Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education) program. You will complete a practical firearm handling test, as well as a written exam. Twelve years and older. Gain the tools needed to start playing the clawhammer banjo on your own and in a jamming environment! No musical experience necessary. Start with a breakdown of the banjo parts and terminology. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Introduction to Safe Day-hiking in the Canadian Mountains – $105 + GST GIRE-135 | Online What do you need in order to hike safely in our Canadian mountain environment? What should you wear? What should you take with you? What do you need to do, to make sure you return home safely? How can we avoid needing Search and Rescue? How can we reduce the likelihood of a dangerous encounter with wildlife? This session will cover the basics of safe hiking in our mountains. Our instructor has gained a wealth of experience from hiking in the mountain environment for 60 years, making both day hikes and multi-day expeditions. He and his wife continue to hike, snowshoe, and x-country ski well into their senior years. Tap into his experience, so that you can enjoy our mountain setting in safety.

Outdoor Adventure Photography – $99 + GST GIAR-354 | In-Class or Online and In-Field We are very fortunate in the Columbia Valley to have such an abundance of amazing subject matter to work with! This workshop will focus on taking and making stunning outdoor photos. Different techniques for capturing those views, along with ways to approach your creative interpretation and pre-visualization will be discussed during two-evening class sessions, before going out to spend a day in the field. We will also cover processing and how to effectively display your work. Note: Course is open to all levels, a camera with the ability to be controlled manually would be beneficial to get the most out of this course, but any camera will work. Participants must have their own transportation for the field trip and should dress for the weather and pack a lunch.

Meet Ryan Bavin: Ryan has been taking photographs for nearly 35 years - initially with film and now with digital cameras. He also experiments with incorporating both analog and digital technology. Although Ryan has photographed many different subject matters, he is most interested in the outdoors; whether it is landscape or mountain exploring, he is always excited to be outside on an adventure with his camera close at hand.

NEW! Native Plant Field and Forest Walk Series – $29 + GST GIHE-251 | In-Field Join us for an adventure through the diverse landscape of the Columbia Valley. Each unique walk has a combined activity that highlights the seasonality and many uses of our native plants. Invermere WALK ONE: Near Invermere, a two to three kilometre walk to see what grows on the sunny slopes just west of the lake, which may include gentians, paintbrushes, bunchberry, rose, saskatoon and chokecherry, to name a few. This walk will also incorporate a tour of Groundswell permaculture garden and speak to how native plants can enhance your yard or garden.

Fischbuch WALK TWO: A Radium area nature walk of approximately three kilometres to see what grows on the slopes of the Rockies and harvest a small amount to make a tincture. The lesson in tincture-making will also include information on how to dry plants for tea, make infusions and decoctions.

Women’s Beginner Mountain Biking – $159 +GST GIRE-660 | In-Class The Women’s Beginner course is an introduction to the joys of mountain biking for women new to biking or transitioning to off-road riding. Focusing on the basics such as getting to know your bike, braking, shifting, cornering, and riding over obstacles, this program is designed to get you out comfortably on trails having fun. This is an all-women’s class with female instructors in a fun relaxed environment. Gain experience riding both the MTB Skills Park and on starter trails and share new experiences with riders of similar abilities. No prerequisites.

Mini Rippers – $45 GIRE-152 | In-Class One-day basic course for 5 to 8 year olds who know how to ride a bike. This course is an introduction to the skills needed to take your bike from the sidewalk to the trails and dirt park safely. Learn the different riding positions on your bike, braking and cornering skills. We will also look at balancing skills and manoeuvering around small obstacles. Must have pedals/hand brakes and be able to ride a bike with pedals and two hand brakes. Note: No refunds.

Kid’s Mountain Bike (General) – $169 GIRE-153 | In-Class This three-day program for young riders offers kids ages 8 to 13 the opportunity to discover the fun of mountain biking and trail riding in a safe environment. The general camp will cover the skills of braking, gear shifting, cornering, climbing, descending, balancing skills, maneuvering over and around small obstacles, safety and trail etiquette. The kids will then take the skills learned onto the cross-country trails that Fernie has to offer. Note: Students must bring mountain bike tuned and ready to go with hand brakes, gears and shocks, helmet, riding gloves, elbow and knee pads (recommended), hydration pack/water, packed lunch and snacks, sunscreen, extra clothing/rain gear, shoes with soft flat soles (skate shoes) and spare inner tube.

Kid’s Mountain Bike (Advanced) – $169 GIRE-155 | In-Class This is for advanced riders who have completed the Kid’s Mountain Bike (General) course and wish to perfect their skills on more challenging terrain. There will be an introduction to wheel lifts, drops, high speed cornering, dynamic riding and dirt jumps, and then the chance to discover the intermediate trails and practice their new-found skills. Prerequisite: Must have completed the Kid’s Mountain Bike General Course and have been certified as ready for the Advanced Course by the instructor.
