OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Introduction to Safe Day-hiking in the Canadian Mountains – $105 + GST GIRE-135 | Online What do you need in order to hike safely in our Canadian mountain environment? What should you wear? What should you take with you? What do you need to do, to make sure you return home safely? How can we avoid needing Search and Rescue? How can we reduce the likelihood of a dangerous encounter with wildlife? This session will cover the basics of safe hiking in our mountains. Our instructor has gained a wealth of experience from hiking in the mountain environment for 60 years, making both day hikes and multi-day expeditions. He and his wife continue to hike, snowshoe, and x-country ski well into their senior years. Tap into his experience, so that you can enjoy our mountain setting in safety.

This workshop will focus on taking and making stunning outdoor photos. Different techniques for capturing those views, along with ways to approach your creative interpretation and pre-visualization will be discussed during two-evening class sessions, before going out to spend a day in the field. We will also cover processing and how to effectively display your work. Note: Course is open to all levels, a camera with the ability to be controlled manually would be beneficial to get the most out of this course, but any camera will work. NEW! Native Plant Field and Forest Walk Series – $29 + GST GIHE-251 | In-Field Join us for an adventure through the diverse landscape of the Columbia Valley. Each unique walk has a combined activity that highlights the seasonality and many uses of our native plants. Invermere WALK ONE: Near Invermere, a two to three kilometre walk to see what grows on the sunny slopes just west of the lake, which may include gentians, paintbrushes, bunchberry, rose, saskatoon and chokecherry, to name a few. This walk will also incorporate a tour of Groundswell permaculture garden and speak to how native plants can enhance your yard or garden.

Fischbuch WALK TWO: A Radium area nature walk of approximately three kilometres to see what grows on the slopes of the Rockies and harvest a small amount to make a tincture. Women’s Beginner Mountain Biking – $159 +GST GIRE-660 | In-Class The Women’s Beginner course is an introduction to the joys of mountain biking for women new to biking or transitioning to off-road riding. Kid’s Mountain Bike (General) – $169 GIRE-153 | In-Class This three-day program for young riders offers kids ages 8 to 13 the opportunity to discover the fun of mountain biking and trail riding in a safe environment. The general camp will cover the skills of braking, gear shifting, cornering, climbing, descending, balancing skills, maneuvering over and around small obstacles, safety and trail etiquette. The kids will then take the skills learned onto the cross-country trails that Fernie has to offer. Note: Students must bring mountain bike tuned and ready to go with hand brakes, gears and shocks, helmet, riding gloves, elbow and knee pads (recommended), hydration pack/water, packed lunch and snacks, sunscreen, extra clothing/rain gear, shoes with soft flat soles (skate shoes) and spare inner tube.
