Visits to gardens are often associated with summertime, but here in the cotswolds, gardens bloom and burst with colour throughout the year.

cOTswOlds Gardens

The Cotswolds year begins with the first flush of snowdrops when, in early spring, Painswick Rococo Garden, Colesbourne Park and Newark Park are must-visit locations. As the days begin to warm and daffodils make a welcome appearance, gardens all over the Cotswolds start bursting into life. Historic woodland, such as Woodchester Park, and the Gloucestershire Wildlife Nature Reserves offer lovely walks for bluebell spotting, while Batsford Arboretum becomes awash with wonderful cherry blossom created by its National Collection of Japanese flowering cherries. Late spring and summer offer many choices; the herbaceous borders at Hidcote Manor and Snowshill Manor will surprise and delight; Kiftsgate Court and Sudeley Castle’s Queens’ Garden become beautifully fragrant with roses. Highgrove, the current residence of HRH the Prince of Wales, is a must-see and offers pre-booked tours of the beautiful, organic gardens. Meanwhile, one of the hidden gems of the Cotswolds, Rousham has large swathes of woodland and evergreen planting, with gently meandering rills giving interest all year round 16

– along with glorious herbaceous borders, roses and dahlias in summer and early autumn. As summer turns to autumn and the trees take on a golden hue, one of the best places to see native trees in full colour is in the grounds of Woodchester Park. The way they grow up the steep valley sides and reflect their colours in the lakes below is simply beautiful. And be sure not to miss the spectacular Japanese acers in full colour at Westonbirt and Batsford arboreta or the cannas, bananas and grasses at the Cotswold Wildlife Park. Before winter arrives and brings the first frosts, enjoy the fantastic ‘hot’ planting at Bourton House Garden and when the chill sets in Blenheim Palace will continue to delight with its formal clipped hedges, architecture, statuary and large landscape gardens – it is a magical landscape, especially after a hard frost or smattering of snow. HeriTaGe & HisTOrY UncOVer THe pasT The name cotswolds is reported to come from cot, meaning sheep enclosure, and wold, meaning hill. This area has been famous for its wool production since the middle ages, but you’ll find long barrows and hilltop forts dating back to ancient times.

ancienT HisTOrY Painswick Beacon, a former Celtic hilltop fort, the Rollright Stones, a Neolithic stone circle, and Hetty Pegler’s Tump, a Neolithic long barrow, all have a fascinating history. They also make beautiful locations for walks and picnics.

reGencY splendOUr Stroll around Cheltenham, soaking up the most complete Regency town in the UK. Visit The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum if you want to find out more about this 18th century spa town’s history, or take a guided tour. In the beautiful Pittville Pump Room you can catch a concert or even taste the waters. And don’t miss the Holst Birthplace Museum. 20

Discover the answer at Chedworth Roman Villa, one of the finest in Britain. For a great introduction to local history, and significant Roman finds, pop into the Corinium Museum in Cirencester. Visit Bath for a taste of Roman times – the Roman Baths are the perfect way to discover how sophisticated their lives really were.

KinG Of THe casTles Discover the tomb of Henry VIII’s queen, Katherine Parr, at Sudeley Castle. Then stroll through the Queens’ Garden to follow in the footsteps of the four English queens that walked within. Don’t miss Berkeley Castle, where King Edward II met his grizzly end. Berkeley may look familiar as a setting from TV dramas Poldark and Wolf Hall.

dOn’T be sHeepisH The design of Cotswold churches and manor houses was often influenced by the great wealth generated by the wool trade. Discover where wool was processed in the Stroud Valleys by visiting Gigg Mill or Dunkirk Mill near Nailsworth. Cotswold Woollen Weavers, in Filkins, houses a textile museum, design studio and shop dedicated to traditionally woven cloth.

TUdOr Tales Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, like Hailes Abbey, during Tudor times changed the Cotswolds landscape forever. New style mansions like Newark Park, near Wotton-under-Edge, and Stanway House, near Winchcombe, were built and are ripe for exploration.

Ruled by just three medieval families for hundreds of years, Tewkesbury was the site of the penultimate and decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses. Step back in time as you watch the battle re-enacted in a world-renowned festival each July. At other times, pick up a Battle Trail leaflet from the Heritage Centre and walk through areas such as Bloody Meadow.

Experience mysterious Woodchester Mansion, an unfinished Gothic masterpiece. Spot their resident bat population and hear tales of ghostly goings on. If you want to have a fright, spook yourself on a ghost tour of the Cotswolds.

www.themodelvillage.com The only grade II listed model village in the country. A model of the actual village built of Cotswold stone to one-ninth scale opened in 1937. The River Windrush flows under Bourton’s famous bridges. The beeches, cherries and chestnuts are all in miniature. Music in the churches and of course, the model of the model. Rousham Rousham is one of Britain’s most unspoilt and undiscovered landscape gardens and was named by garden writer and broadcaster Monty Don as one of his favourite gardens in the country. Designed by William Kent in the 18th century, Rousham represents the first phase of English landscape design and remains largely unaltered since its conception.
