SANTA’S INVADE PITCH ON the last Saturday before Christmas, 12 rogue Santa’s made an appearance during Cheltenham’s home match against Portsmouth. The invasion happened at halftime during the 1-1 draw at the Whaddon Road stadium, leaving everyone amused and confused. One Santa had what can only be described as a deliberate wardrobe
malfunction, as his trousers ‘fell’ down during his run on to the pitch. Amidst roars of laughter from the home and away fans the stewards and police smartly stepped in to deal with the ‘chrimbo chaos’. But while they were ejected from the ground, it seems they got off with a slap on the wrists after
only having their names taken by the ‘boys in blue’. A spokesman for the force said: “Gloucestershire Police can confirm that they were ejected from the stadium by the match stewards according to normal practice for a pitch invasion. “Police fully supported the stewards in their handling of the event,

and responded to this incident by taking the names of those fans for this offence, for which they will be reported. “Although a pitch invasion is an offence for which people can be charged, police consider this was an appropriate and proportionate response to a low level incident just prior to Christmas.”
Alexander Burn is an independent family business with three offices in the Cheltenham area.

Editor’sDESK IT’S been great to see our local retailers flourishing at Christmas this year. The town has indeed been buzzing with pre-Christmas sales and bargain hunters ‘a plenty’. It’s a shame that the traditional Boxing Day sale looks like slipping away and going the route of the Dodo, as the retailers everhungry for every penny they can get their hands on heavily promote sale items in the run up to Christmas Day. Once again it looks like further erosion of Christmas traditions. Boxing Day sales may going down the pan for the next generation as we discard the old in favour of the new. I’m absolutely convinced that many of the retailers pre-inflate their costs and then discount them just in time for Yuletide, which then gives the impression of a bargain i.e. they are still retaining the same amount of value for the goods that they are selling. Sale or no sale. It’s an old marketing trick. Even GAP in the town had a 60% sale on the go this week. What’s the point? Will they be having a 90% sale on Boxing Day then? Or even better just giving the stuff away? My point is that it’s all a nonsense as we don’t know where we are with all of this. It’s an economy as false as Oscar Pistorius’s leg. Perhaps we should have sales all year round and then nobody will know if they’re getting a bargain or not? Badger cull woefully short FEWER than half the target number of badgers were killed in this year’s cull in Gloucestershire, Defra has announced. Figures released show 274 were culled by shooting or cage trapping in the county. The minimum target was 615. The sixweek cull ended in October. Defra said the level of interference by anti-cull activists had been higher in Gloucestershire than in Somerset. Writing in a statement to the government, Environment Secretary Liz Truss said: “The results in Gloucestershire reflect the challenges of extensive unlawful protest and intimidation.” However, Gloucestershire Police said there were only three arrests for criminal offences during the entire period of the cull and most protest activity was conducted lawfully. “All reports made to Gloucestershire Constabulary of intimidation and harassment have been fully investigated and there are no prosecutions pending,” a
Early morning crash-driver suspected of drink driving
Supermarket robbed
FOUR people were taken to hospital following an early morning smash in Cheltenham. A woman had to be cut from the car after the crash at Kempton Grove in Fiddler's Green just after 4.30am last Saturday morning. All four occupants aged between 17 and 20, were not thought to be seriously injured after the blue hatchback collided with a tree. Police officers however said the crash
POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a theft at a supermarket in Coronation Square in Cheltenham on Monday 15th December. At 7.50pm a man purchased a pot of yoghurt and then snatched a wad of bank notes from the till. He ran out of the store escaping with a few hundred pounds. The man is white, 6' tall and in his early thirties. He was wearing a black jacket with light coloured stripes down each sleeve.
could have easily resulted in a fatality and four families’ lives could have been changed forever. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. A spokesman for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The crews extricated one female from the vehicle. “Once the extricated the female was taken to hospital by ambulance. “Three other people in the vehicle were also taken to hospital via ambulance.”

spokesman added. The findings from Defra show this year in Gloucestershire 166 were shot, and 108 trapped. The report concludes the levels of accuracy achieved in this year’s cull were “slightly, but not significantly” improved compared to 2013. Chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens admitted the cull might not lead to the hoped-for reduction of the disease in Gloucestershire. “The benefits of reducing disease in cattle over the planned four-year cull may not be realised there,” he said. He said that two more scheduled pilot culls, in 2015 and 2016, should continue, and added that culling could be extended into 2017 because of the “slow start” in Gloucestershire. Peter Martin from the Badger Trust said the cull had been a “spectacular failure” in Gloucestershire. “We’ve been sold the idea a cull would solve part of the problem of TB and it clearly hasn’t.”
There were a number of people in the store at the time of the incident and a small group of people standing directly outside the supermarket on the street when the offender fled. A 36-year-old man from Cheltenham has been arrested on suspicion of theft and he has been bailed to return to the police on 28th January 2015. The police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the theft or who has any further information. Please ring 101 quoting Incident Number 453 of 15th December 2014.

Town centre shopping sees Christmas increase SHOPPING in Cheltenham is on the up compared to previous years, figures have shown. Consumer monitors show that the footfall in Cheltenham’s Regent Arcade has risen by three percent on last year and is growing day by day in the lead up to Christmas. The statistics show that Cheltenham is becoming a more attractive shopping destination with Beechwood Shopping Centre and The Brewery also popular destinations. Retail revenue isn’t recorded but footfall gives a good indication of shopper influence. Martin Quantock, Cheltenham town manager, said: “While the south west is seeing a slight decrease in footfall this year, Cheltenham is on the up.”

Avoid ‘turkey tummy’ this year and defrost safely TO HELP people stay safe during this festive season Cheltenham Borough Council is supporting the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on National Defrost Your Turkey Day. This day prompted Christmas cooks to start thinking of the defrosting process in plenty of time and avoid getting caught out. A typical large turkey can take two days to defrost. Only one in four people get it right by defrosting their turkey in the fridge. The Food Standard Agency is concerned that many risk getting an unwelcome gift of food poisoning this Christmas. Incorrect thawing provides a platform for bacteria such as campylobacter to spread, leaving you with a turkey dinner that looks and tastes delicious but contains a hidden risk that can’t be seen, tasted or smelled, but can ruin your new year. “We all love our turkey dinner at Christmas and this year should be no exception. It’s the little things you do that can make a real difference. So if you make sure that your turkey is defrosted safely and in good time, you can enjoy your meal happily and safely.” said Kevin Hargin, Head of Foodborne Disease at the Food Standards Agency. The FSA advises that when preparing your turkey from frozen you should:
• Follow the retailer’s recommended defrosting time. The size of your turkey will determine how long it needs to be defrosted for (a large 11kg turkey can take up to two days to defrost). • Defrost your turkey in the fridge if possible or somewhere cool. Cold temperature slows the growth of germs on food and will keep it safe and fresh. • Cover the turkey whilst defrosting, leave in the packaging or put it in a container to hold any thawing juices, and place it at the bottom of the fridge to avoid cross-contamination. • Defrost thoroughly, as otherwise your turkey may not cook evenly and harmful bacteria could survive the cooking process. • Raw turkey should always be put in the bottom of the fridge until ready to use. Leaving on the kitchen counter at room temperature could increase your risk of food poisoning. If you want your Christmas dinner to be remembered for the right reasons, follow the FSA’s advice on the recommended safe practices when preparing, cooking and storing turkey. The incident occurred in the front courtyard of Auto Clinic Cheltenham, The Runnings, between 11.30am-12pm on Monday 15th December. The suspect was asked to move his vehicle which was blocking the road and is reported to have violently punched the victim in the head and face several times, following which he allegedly also punched the victim’s father, causing him to fall backwards onto the ground unconscious. His glasses were also broken. The suspect is then alleged to have threatened the victims further and spat in one of their faces before leaving in a black car, believed to be a Golf ‘boy racer’ style with blacked out windows and ‘aftermarket’ wheels/alloys. Both victims went to hospital and received 20 stitches between them, before being later discharged. The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 – 25, 5 ft 8 inches tall, medium build, black hair, with a goatee beard, and wearing a blue fleece-type jumper and white trainers. I joined Countryfile in 2001 and by 2009 the viewing figures trebled, and we now have a prime-time television slot. My farm is based near to the Cotswold Gateway town of Cheltenham and it is simply a beautiful way of life. The TV helps it draw in a large amount of people. town with great places to visit. The racecourse, town centre, the cinema and theatre are the spots I often go with my family.” Countryfile of course helps with Children In Need every year and produces four or five magazines a year. Panic not, you still have time to find that perfect gift
Lotus Red Frill Trim Clutch Bag, £50 (www.debenhamsweddings.com)
IS THERE a harder task on earth than buying a Christmas present for a ‘fashionista’? Well, yes, obviously - but it’s still a trial that can induce panic and confusion in even the most organised of shoppers. The thing is, Uncle Gerald probably wouldn’t bat an eyelid if you got him the wrong colour socks, but your Instagram-obsessed teen cousin’s contempt will be palpable if what she finds under the tree doesn’t meet her exacting standards. Help is at hand, however. From trendy trinkets to glam accessories and cool woollens, follow our fool proof guide to the fun, fashionable finds that won’t require a gift receipt. Is your fashion-following friend in possession of a designer handbag (or four) that she loves like a child? Obviously, adding to her collection isn’t really an option – unless your Secret Santa budget is in fact £5,000 - but you can offer a little seasonal spruce-up in the form of a trendy trinket, with which she can adorn her arm candy. Ted Baker’s leather ‘Tassler’ comes in three colours, while Dune has a
selection of touchable charms that chime with winter’s faux fur trend, so it’s easy to find a suitable shade, even in the sub-£20 region. Top of the trinket tree, however, is definitely the Burberry Beauty Charm, a glitzy triumvirate with a dusky pink lipgloss hidden in one of the golden cubes. Gifting clothes can be a risky business. There’s the chance you’ll seriously offend someone if you guestimate the wrong size, and if your recipient does have to return the ill-fitting item, then Sod’s Law says the right size will be sold once the January sales hit. A bag, on the other hand, carries less risk, especially if it’s a compact clutch that will come in handy during the party period. Or you could go with the bag that’s an iPhone-aholic’s dream come true. The Mighty Purse is a sleek leather pouch containing a rechargeable gadget that’s got enough juice for two smartphone refuels. So last minute gift shopping this Christmas need not be the nightmare you think it is.

Six percent of households in Cheltenham eligible for home heating help NEW research from Home Heat Helpline shows as many as 3000 households are eligible for help to keep their home warm this winter. The research found that six percent of households in Cheltenham are eligible for help from energy companies this winter. As a result, Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99) is encouraging people to find out what they could be entitled to. Homes that may qualify include all those living in certain deprived areas as well as low income pensioners, disadvantaged families with children or those with a disability that live in a rural area. Local MP Martin Horwood said: “Many people may not know where to turn for free advice on keeping their homes warm. One of the best ways for people in Cheltenham to stay warm this winter is to act now,
and call the Home Heat Helpline to see if they’re eligible for help.” Lawrence Slade, Chief Operating Officer, and Home Heat Helpline said: “The research speaks for itself – an astounding 3.2 million households in Britain are entitled to home heating help. As we’re now in winter, we are urging people to make a free, confidential call to the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 33 66 99.” Last year, 98 percent of eligible households may have missed out on free advice and support because they did not call the independent Helpline. The British Energy Aid Report, carried out by the New Policy Institute on behalf of Home Heat Helpline, showed that one in eight British homes across Great Britain is entitled to relief, a total of 3.2 million households.
HealthMatters Your essential guide to staying healthy and enjoying the best life has to offer By NATALIE NEALE
CHILLS-VILLE WITH the weather getting considerably colder, it’s probably a good idea to understand a bit about hypothermia, and to realise that you don’t need to be climbing Mount Everest to become hypothermic. I’m thinking a little closer to home - specifically scantily clad girlies on a night out perhaps? Or drunken individuals whom have passed out on a bench whilst waiting for their taxi! Either way, hypothermia is a realistic risk. You're more at risk if you don't wear enough layers to keep warm or you don't cover your head (a large amount of body heat is lost through your head so make sure you have a hat in your bag for your journey home). It's also possible to get hypothermia in mild weather. For example, if you're soaked in the rain and don't dry off properly soon afterwards (particularly if there is a cool wind), the water evaporates from your skin and lowers your body temperature. Hypothermia is a condition whereby a person’s core temperature falls below 35.0 °C which is below the temperature requirements for normal metabolism and body functions. A normal body temperature is generally between 36.5–37.5 °C. If a person is exposed
to cold, and their internal mechanisms cannot replenish the heat that is being lost, the body's core temperature falls. Contrary to popular belief, alcohol does not keep you warm, in fact alcohol affects the body’s ability to retain heat. Although alcohol dilates your bloods vessels peripherally (close to the skin), thus taking more blood and heat to hands, face, feet etc. It means that less blood and heat are being taken to the vital organs. Someone who is under the influence of alcohol may also be unaware that they are suffering with hy-
pothermia. The treatment of mild hypothermia involves: warm drinks, warm clothing and staying active. Before you set out for a night on the tiles make sure you know how you’re getting home. Stick with friends to avoid unnecessary hanging around in the cold and if wearing warm clothes isn’t part of your ‘fashionista’ look for the evening, just popping a hat, scarf and gloves in a handbag could come in mighty useful in keeping you warm when you find yourself waiting at the taxi rank for an hour!

A selection of the strangest stories from around the globe
SKY HIGH CAROLS A GOSPEL choir set a new world record for the highest altitude carol concert when they sang on a flight from London's Gatwick aiport to Geneva. Airline Easyjet enlisted The ACM Gospel Choir for the 15 minute concert which lasted 15 minutes and took place at an altitude of 39,000 feet. Choir director Mark De-Lisser said: “Singing is what we do and we have sung in some amazing, weird and even dangerous places. “But to be given the opportunity to sing some festive cheer to the on-board passengers as
we cruise at over 39,000 feet is truly out of this world.” Once the concert was over, the choir collected funds for charity Unicef as part of Easyjet's Change for Good collection. Easyjet spokesman Paul Moore added: “We thought our passengers would enjoy this festive form of in-flight entertainment and to achieve a Guinness World Records title at the same time as filling the plane with seasonal songs is the icing on the Christmas cake.”
Glasgow belongs to me A MAN dressed in a Santa suit has been fined for climbing up Glasgow’s iconic statue of the Duke of Wellington. Police said the 51-year-old had been given a fixed-penalty ticket following the stunt at the statue in Royal Exchange Square. He scaled the statue and waved to passers-by, until fire crews arrived with a ladder and took him down, reports the BBC. The Santa was last seen
entering a police van as the gathered crowd shouted: “Free Santa.” A police spokeswoman was keen to stress the man who was fined was not the real Santa. It is understood the stunt was a protest by a father campaigning for access to his child. As well as climbing the statue the Santa had tied a banner to its plinth, proclaiming that “kids have rights.”
VENTING SPLEEN… Local man about town, Tom Thurlow lets loose
T
here’s no doubt in my mind whatsoever that Christmas was created for rich people and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can’t wait to spend it with my wealthy friends in Leckhampton. I’ll have to make some pretty grueling decisions this year: which meat to take from the three or four at large, whether I should sip champagne or fizzy pink, or perhaps the hardest decision being how do I haul all the gifts I receive back up my long, sweeping driveway when I return home drunk? Of course that last one really isn’t the issue, someone will lug it for me. But we are facing an epidemic in this country, which is slowly creeping into Regency Cheltenham. Attitudes are changing and many now consider it okay to perform a budget Christmas. Who actually likes receiving
crap on Christmas? Poor people, that’s who. Just picture those peasants sat in their living room on Christmas day, huddled round their glass-topped coffee table eating from tubs of Quality Street. Makes you want to vomit right? Poorly wrapped presents (in naff, thin paper) that comprise of Joop perfume,
Thorntons chocolate, Pandora bracelets, Armani shirts; it must truly be awful to have no taste. I pity all those on housing benefit at this time of year. And then there’s the food they’ll choke on. My newspaper (Daily Mail) have written numerous pieces covering the rise of the budget supermarket and it’s a scary realisation of how swamped we are by the underclass. Genuinely readers - you need to be careful with who you surround yourself with these days. Recently I’ve found myself in the unfortunate position to spot a pile of Iceland carrier bags whilst round a friend’s house. She was very
quick to apologise (bless) and she did frantically try to explain how tough times have become since giving birth to her baby and how hard it is as a single mother but don’t worry readers, I gave her the hand and promptly turned away. I appreciate how uncertain these times may be but if you start to hang out with rubbish, you will smell, so it’s probably best to cast off these down and outs as soon as possible. Poor people have always been a problem that the UK’s had to face up to but I do fear it’s becoming more prevalent now that the high street is pandering to them and offering so much choice with the likes of foreign invaders Lidl, Aldi and the unlimited supply of pound chains. I worry that big business is encouraging society to embrace being broke. Footfall is undoubtedly
dropping in our British-born stores like Waitrose, Sainsburys, even Tesco’s. So it’s not just British pride that’s being hurt, its British business. By all means I’m not suggesting poor people should suffer at Christmas. If their way of having fun is to play that shoddy excuse of a Monopoly game (aka Cheltenham Monopoly) around a table that they’ve just used to eat their dinner from, then all power to them. I’m just merely pointing out I wouldn’t have the strength to enjoy Christmas without the money and I’m just grateful I can share my thoughts with my very understanding readers. If I ever become poor I’ll walk to Gloucester, climb up to the top of the Gloucester Cathedral and throw myself off. Happy Christmas everyone!

PSYCHO’ KILLER KOALA BEAR – Extracts from a real advert! A koala called GumNut is being sold on Craigslist - but be warned, he's not quite as cute as he looks in this picture. His owner from Colorado has had enough of the marsupial's antics, which include killing his cat. Detailing his list of shame, the ad reads as follows: I have a 3-year-old Koala bear named GumNut that I am desperately trying to find a new home for. I bought him in January figuring it would be an awesome pet that would enjoy living in my greenhouse, sadly I was wrong. I paid $3200 for him back in January and I am not sure what the used Koala bear market is like in a good economy or the one we have now; so I am open to offers. Please use some common sense before contacting me, don't be an idiot, I am not interested in trading my Koala Bear for your busted up 1980's Camero, pictures of your naked wife, or an offer to paint my garage door.
Now for the BAD: 1. He eats a lot of eucalyptus, which is not as cheap as I expected. 2. Apparently eucalyptus is like a drug for Koala Bears, when GunNut is coming down from his high he becomes very violent and aggressive. 3. He raped and killed my wife's cat 'Miss Kitty' (Honestly, I wanted to put this in the good section because I've been trying to find a way to get that worthless cat out of the house for two years, thanks to GumNut.) 4. He does not like Asians, I have no idea where this Koala was raised but someone of Asian Decent must have really mistreated him. 5. Loves Vin Diesel movies, not sure why, he just does. 6. He has extremely sharp claws and teeth which he uses often. 7. Loves shiny objects, steals and hides them frequently in my dog's rear end. 8. He is quiet, and as a result has snuck in on my wife and I during intimate moments. I mind him watching; maybe it won't bother you as much. 9. GumNut smells terrible and is not easy to wash. I had to hold a gas soaked rag over his mouth till he blacked out to get him in this tub for a bath. 10. Once he is in the water he is fine, getting him into the water IS the challenge, he will scratch you, he will bite you, and you will bleed.
GUMNUT'S STATS: The GOOD 1. He is somewhat housebroken, uses a cat box most of the time. 2. For the most part he is very quiet, this also falls into the bad category which we will touch on in a moment. 3. He eats spiders, (not kidding) we haven't had a spider in our house since we got him. 4. He hates watching Desperate Housewives, used to be my wife's favorite show until GumNut bit her for changing the channel from jeopardy, to Desperate Housewives. 5. Gets along well with one of my two dogs. 6. Loves to go for car rides.

PROPERTY ADVICE
Wood burning stoves could save you a small fortune OPEN fires are great in many ways, however they are not very energy efficient, at only around 20%. Woodburning stoves are much more efficient, at around 70-90%, so you get all the benefits of a real fire without most of your money going up in smoke. As well as the cost of wood burner itself, remember to factor in the cost of installation, accessories and any necessary building work. However, your wood burner should start saving you money straightaway by reducing the need to have the heating on. If your home has an open-plan layout, or you keep the internal doors open so the stove does more than just heat the room it's in, you should save more on heating costs. The installation of a wood burner must comply with building regulations, and the easiest way to do this is to use a qualified fitter. HETAS-registered installers deal with wood, solid-fuel and biomass domestic heating appliances and can self-certify that their work complies with building regulations, so
it's safe and legal. The chimney may need to be lined before the wood burner can be installed. Homes dating from the mid-1960s onwards should have had a concrete or clay chimney liner fitted when they were built, but get a qualified installer to check out the chimney, whatever the age of your home. There are lots of benefits to having a chimney lined, including better energy efficiency. Wood (as long as it's sustainably sourced) is a more environmentally friendly fuel than oil or gas - and subject to fewer price rises. Freshly cut wood contains a lot of water, so you have to dry it out (season it) before you can burn it. This can take as long as three years. You can buy wood that's already seasoned, or you can season it yourself, using a log store - if air can circulate around the logs, they should dry out. And it's not just wood - with a multi-fuel stove, you can also burn fuels like coal, smokeless fuel, peat and turf (depending on any smoke-control restrictions in your area).

Goliath vs Goliath FACEBOOK announced they are going to start attacking LinkedIn’s market, in response and to address the platforms Achilles heel (lack of user engagement). LinkedIn introduced the
world’s largest personal blogging platform and put more effort into promoting the value of having a good Company Page. Less publically LinkedIn also began restricting some of the functionality that free account holders have been
used to, plus there are even unsubstantiated rumours that LinkedIn is making changes to restrict the data that is available from Google or Bing search. If true this will have a major impact on all those who are reliant on X-ray searching.

FROM the outside, there's almost nothing to distinguish the PIH from any other 3 Series - and that's exactly the intention. Designed to fit neatly into the rest of the range rather than being a standalone model, the 3 Series PHEV has all its changes under the skin. Under the bonnet, there's a new generation 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 180hp while, at the rear, there's a substantial battery pack powering an electric motor up front to give a combined total of 245hp, using technology derived from that used in the i3 and i8 pure electric vehicles. The aim is to deliver performance in line with the 328i model, but with substantially better fuel consumption and emissions. If you want to know what the 3 Series looks like, then just peer out of your window; it's the archetypal compact sporting saloon with its short front overhang, square-jawed nose and generally slightly aggressive demeanour. That's exactly what the thousands of people who buy one every year want however, and despite the changes underneath, you won't be able to tell the PHEV version from any other - Apart from the badges of course.
KIA RIO 3 5DR 1.4 BLACK £8,999
Adding a load of bulky technology to an existing car comes at the cost of space, but BMW has done a good job of minimising the impact. The only noticeable change is in the boot, under which sits the battery pack and associated components. The upshot is the boot floor is raised by 35mm, and while that's obvious reduction, the boot still looks pretty spacious. A lot of thought has been put into making the PHEV drive as well as a regular 3 Series and be able to suit all kinds of driving conditions, so there are a number of modes that change the whole operation of the system. Start it up and it operates silently, going straight into pure EV mode unless the temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius. You can switch between Comfort, Sport and EcoPro modes as normal and this will vary the operation of the engine; either being silent unless required, working with the electric motor for maximum performance or being used as a range extender when required. Even better is the Proactive Driving Assistant which scans your route if you've used the sat nav and switches the driving mode for you for maximum efficiency.

THE LIVE LINE-UPS AS we approach the tail end of 2014, the live music scene in Cheltenham traditionally slows down. Pubs that normally host gigs are busy hosting Christmas parties, and bands that normally play gigs are busy playing Scalextric with their nephews. However, there are still a few festive gigs in Cheltenham this week that might provide light relief from the stress of peeling potatoes or stuffing the traditional
Christmas turkey. On Christmas Eve acoustic duo Anthony Vukic and Eleanor Frances, AKA LA Lights, entertain festive revellers at The Strand. Having performed as far afield as Venice, their repertoire ranges from classic covers to contemporary songs. Book The Burning Towers REVIEW By Frances Thomas By EVE SEYMOUR
THE Burning Towers is the second in the ‘Girls of Troy’ trilogy. It tells the story of the relentless war waged between the Greeks and Trojans, and the narrative unfolds through the eyes of a young Greek slave girl, Eirene, who also has the gift of ‘the Sight’. Steeped in historical detail and mythology, The Burning Towers is a treasure trove of a novel by an experienced writer, and gives a fascinating insight into the life of the average female slave. Aside from her duties as a handmaiden, Eirene is expected to act as nursemaid to a future King, run errands down dark alleys to obtain vials of nameless substances, including poison, pick up the bodies of soldiers slain in battle and bathe them in preparation for
burial, and act as interpreter to the great King Priam of Troy. While great soldiers like Achilles and Hector may strut their stuff, it’s Eirene who is the real heroine of the piece. Caught on the wrong side of a war with her own countrymen, she is wise beyond her years and chillingly observes with grim resignation that ‘... as slaves go, I’m lucky. If they lose the war, I won’t be lucky.’ And this is where the tension of the novel grips the storyline like a vice. Greek by birth, Eirene’s heart is with the family she was forced to leave behind, yet she also feels genuine affection for her Trojan mistress, Cassandra, herself a victim of the god Apollo and cursed with the gift of prophecies that will never be believed. The question that nags both Eirene and the reader is
this: if the Greeks take Troy, what will become of them all? Thomas’s descriptive and sophisticated prose is pitched perfectly to young adults. The ending, however, is slightly rushed and the big climactic scene, (the sacking of Troy and the burning of the towers) is almost incidental as it happens ‘offcamera’ and packs less punch than it might. This aside, the novel is still well worth a read. The Burning Towers is published by SilverWood Books. Eve Seymour is a freelance writing coach and the author of seven crime fiction novels. Beautiful Losers will be published by US publisher Midnight Ink early 2016. To see more details of her work visit www.evseymour.co.uk

Injury hit Cheltenham suffer pre-Christmas blues RUGBY UNION
Keynsham Cheltenham
30 19
CHELTENHAM’S injury hoodoo struck again as they slipped to a disappointing defeat away to fellow strugglers Keynsham in Western Counties North. With the game just two minutes old Cheltenham lost prop Henry Compton with a groin injury and he was replaced by Ross Griffiths. With both sides struggling to get a foothold in the game, play was halted in the eighth minute when Cheltenham’s hooker Syd Haskayne was replaced by Tim Acheson after a old knee injury flared up. This setback did not deter Cheltenham taking a 5-0 lead in the 16th minute when second row forward Rhys Edwards scored a try wide out with Josh Herbert’s conversion off target. But it was not long before Keynsham drew level with the ball finding a eager right wing Gareth Bradnock who scored a unconverted try. As the game swung back in favour of Cheltenham when after nine phases the ball was shipped to Tom Lait who shrugged of would be tacklers for a good try with Herbert adding the extras for a narrow 125 lead. With neither side dominating Keynsham spurned a golden opportunity to hit back when scrum-half John Pearce took a quick tap penalty to himself with the try line at his mercy only to drop his own pass and the chance was got. Just before the half-time whistle, Keynsham’s star man Paul Edson did however kick a penalty to narrow the arrears to 12-8. Keynsham restarted the half in front of a healthy crowd including Cheltenham’s
injured scrum-half Ryan Hill up and about after his horrific injury back in November. With the half two minutes old Cheltenham gave away a soft penalty with Edson kicking with ease for a 12-11 scoreline. Keynsham were now in the ascendancy with Pearce allowed a easy passage to grab his first try with boot of Edson adding the extras for a 18-12 home lead. Not for the first time this season, Cheltenham then lost captain James Hillier with a yellow card for a ruck infringement. Keynsham soon utilised the man advantage with Pearce scoring a second unconverted try to extend the home lead to 23-12. Keynsham stretched their lead to 30-12 with the ball finding left wing Rob Breckon for a bonus point try with Edson converting. With time slipping away Cheltenham rallied and after 72 minutes the ball was worked out to the right and stand-in scrumhalf Richard Beeney score a well constructed try wide out with Herbert landing a good touchline conversion. Cheltenham continued to battle right up to the final whistle but the home defence stood firm and the game ended in a disappointing defeat leaving, Cheltenham in eighth place at the Christmas break. Bad day all round for depleted North RUGBY UNION
Bedworth Cheltenham North
60 7
A DEPLETED Cheltenham North side left for their longest away fixture with five regular first team players unavailable. Captain and vice-captain were missing and work commitment and injuries robbed the club of Dan Hewitt, Nathan Wakefield and Rhys Burton. The much changed side took the field in a very wet and windy location. Playing against the wind, North were constantly under pressure and in the 15th minute conceded their first try, which was unconverted.
North were becoming very frustrated by the lack of the referee’s offside decisions being constantly penalised and were 25-0 down at half-time. At the start of the second half North's plight worsened losing Joel Randall with a laceration to his face closely followed by hooker Scott Laird with a back injury. Then, in the last quarter they lost two more players Rich Hance with a knee injury, Chris Wright ankle injury, compounding a bad day all round. They finished the game missing 10 of their regular first team players and the only bright spot was Clive Piff's quick tap penalty and pass to Adam Dove who scored, with McKegney converting.
Cote’s regional teams finish on a high NETBALL
ALL three of Hucclecote’s regional teams secured victories in their last matches before Christmas. Regional One Hucclecote Stars turned around their early season defeat against Exeter to win on Sunday 49-34. Regional Two Hucclecote Comets snatched a one goal win over Premier Romans from Bristol, again another turn around game after losing to this side at the beginning of the season. The game was tense throughout with the lead swinging to both teams quarter by quarter. Eventually Comets, three goals down going into the final quarter, kept their cool and with some excellent defending by Becky Campbell and Ella Powell Davies the game swung to Hucclecote’s favour with a final score of 44-43. In the Under-16 regional league, Hucclecote Panthers continued their dominance in South West Division One with a convincing 54-27 win over Exeter depriving them of a loser’s bonus point and retaining the top
spot of this table. In the Premier League, Huccecote’s top flight team couldn’t quite overhaul a strong New Campbell side from Essex. With a number of key players missing due to the England versus Wales Test match, Hucclecote fought hard but went down 51-44. In the local Gloucestershire County League, Lightning continue to improve their position in Division One now sitting second in the table with a 37-25 win over Churchdown Black Socks. Storm sneaked home against Cirencester 32-25, while Tornadoes in Division Two lost out to Cleeve Fillies 43-23 but secured the losing bonus point. In the junior levels the Under-14s played a friendly match against West Exeter and put in a convincing performance to take the victory 37-17. Hucclecote’s youngest players, the Under12s, had a small tournament at the Bentham Sports Domes, playing ‘high five’ netball. Everybody got to play and showed some great potential for the future games ahead.

Sterling-James nets in Pompey draw CONTINUED FROM BACK PAGE
straight away defeats in all competitions for Andy Awford’s side, while Buckle has seen his side draw all three of his League Two games at the helm going into their Boxing Day trip to his former club Exeter City. Sterling-James, who was with non-league Redditch United last season, had agreed a new deal which will keep him at Whaddon Road until the end of the 2015/16 season two days before the game. After a lively substitute display at Mansfield Town a week earlier he was promoted to the starting line-up in place of leading scorer Byron Harrison and it proved to be an inspired decision from Buckle.
He received the ball from Craig BrahamBarrett just outside the box before a neat step over gave him the space to unleash a low left-footed finish past Paul Jones. Danny Hollands had fired an acrobatic volley from Lee Holmes’ cross into the side netting for Portsmouth in the 10th minute. Pompey made a strong start to the second half, but Sterling-James should have scored again in the 55th minute after an error from Joe Devera. He was allowed to race through on goal, but Jones saved his effort and seconds later the visitors were level. Central defender Jack Whatmough made a surging run forward before supplying Atangana and his powerful drive crashed in off the underside of the crossbar via the aid

of a deflection off the foot of Lee Vaughan. Paul Robinson shot wide from a good position with a minute left and ex-Pompey number one Trevor Carson saved well from Holmes as Portsmouth nearly found a winner, but it ended all-square.
Southside pegged back after Ponting stunner and Bourton goalkeeper Josh Odom. This resulted in the Southside striker receiving a red card and the Bourton goalkeeper a yellow. This change in numbers placed Bourton on the front foot with Mosson converting from a tight angle to make it 1-1. Both teams then had a number of chances to find a winner, but unfortunately both sets of forwards were unsuccessful.

WITH few games being played in the Cheltenham League as a result of the Christmas break, this mid-table clash in Division Four gave both teams the opportunity to close the gap on the teams in the top half of the table. Both sides had plenty of chances within the opening 20 minutes, the first of which fell to Lee Mosson of Bourton following a wayward backpass from the Southside centre-half, Steve Oliveri. Southside goalkeeper Tom Williams was quick off the line to block the early strike. The next two clear chances both fell to Southside, with Daniel Watt connecting with the underside of the Bourton crossbar and Chris Bogle placing his shot over the top. The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes. Quick distribution by Williams to Southside’s left midfield, Dave Ponting, who then drove forward to the half-way line. Spotting the goalkeeper off of his line, he

Just before the half-time whistle, Southside missed their best chance of the game with Bogle connecting with the Rovers crossbar for the second time in the game. Early in the second half Southside were reduced to 10 men following an altercation between Southside striker Tommy Wright

Cheltenham League round-up CHURCHDOWN Panthers dropped points at AC Olympia in Division One of the Cheltenham League, sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Ford Cheltenham, suffering a surprise 2-1 setback. With their nearest rivals at the bottom of the division, Bishop’s Cleeve III, without a game Kings were hoping to catch them up but it wasn’t to be as RSG collected the three points with goals from Steve Brown and Del Nelder. Whaddon United stayed at the top with a convincing 3-0 win at Gala Wilton.
In Division Two Cheltenham Civil Service retained top spot after a narrow 1-0 win over Tewkesbury Town thanks to Neil Wheeler’s strike. Ben Throughton was on target for second placed Staunton and Corse in their away win at Whaddon Utd Reserves. Only one game was played in Division Three where leaders Welland overcame lowly Charlton Rovers Reserves 2-0. Apperley moved to the top Divisition Four on goal difference with their win at home to Cheltenham Civil Service III as Northway
lost 4-3 away at Leckhampton Rovers Reserves. Southside Reserves will be pleased with their point at home to Bourton Rovers. Two goals from Jason Walker and one from Alex Topping kept Staunton and Corse Reserves in second place in Division Five as leaders Cheltenham Athletic won at Hatherley. Ryan Gourley (4) and Ed Farrel (3) made sure of a convincing 5-1 win for FC Lakeside Reserves at bottom placed FC Barometrics III.
CHELTENHAM Civil Service’s seemingly unstoppable march towards the Gloucestershire County League title continued with a 2-0 win at Hanham Athletic. Both goals arrived in the opening 25 minutes as a result of defensive errors. Leading marksman Jack Sklenar maintained his impressive strike rate with the opener on 15 minutes and the second was driven in by Jamie Lock 10 minutes later. Struggling Bishop’s Cleeve Reserves went down 4-0 at Chipping Sodbury Town. The home started brightly and two good early chances were missed by Justin Cattle and James Mackie. Town looked much the better side but had to wait until the 26th minute to open the scoring when a through ball from Sam Jenkins gave James Mackie the opportunity to drive the ball past the goalkeeper from 15 yards. A Danny Coombes cross from the right on 35 minutes saw Justin Cattle rise to head home the second. Coombes was involved with the third goal on 65 minutes with another cross from the right that was headed home by Alex Fox. Sodbury made it 4-0 on 63 minutes when new signing Ben Weaver came on as a substitute and with his first touch picked up the rebound of the post from a Danny Coombes shot to score. Cleeve never really got a look in and only forced one corner throughout the game. They host AEK Boco on Saturday, while Cheltenham Civil Service take a break from league action with a trip to Henbury in the Les James Cup second round.
A hat-trick from Daniel Stowe kept Malvern Vale top of Division Six on goal difference as second placed Fintan Reserves hit Gala Wilton for six. Regency Town maintained their fight for promotion with a fine win against third placed Cheltenham United.

Belief building ahead of Boxing Day trip to Exeter – Buckle FOOTBALL
P
AUL Buckle has challenged his Cheltenham Town side to add finesse to their work rate as they chase a first win under his leadership at Exeter City on Boxing Day (3pm). The new boss has tightened up his team’s defence, with only a single goal conceded in each of the last three League Two matches, all of which have finished 1-1. The most recent was against Portsmouth at Whaddon Road last Saturday, when Omari Sterling-James’ first goal for the club was cancelled out by Nigel Atangana. Buckle now wants to see an im-
provement in the final third, having been pleased with the organisation and discipline since he succeeded Mark Yates in the hotseat. “The final ball is icing on the cake now because I had to start from the back,” he said. “Now we have to be more inventive around the box and show more belief. “I am thrilled with my team’s resilience and the first thing I had to do was to stop the goals flying in, which the boys have done. “We had a good chat after the game and I learned a lot more about my players after Portsmouth equalised because it was a test of character with them attacking the
end with their fans in, but we held out and were fairly comfortable in the end. “If you give everything you have a chance of winning the game. Pompey have a lot more money than us and great fanbase, but we could have maybe won the game on another day.” Buckle has tied up youngsters Sterling-James, Zack Kotwica and Joe Hanks on extended contracts until the end of next season, with more of the club’s teenage talent set to put pen to paper in the coming weeks. “I brought Omari into the team to play off Terry Gornell and it was working for us because Portsmouth didn’t trouble us in
the first half,” Buckle said. “We scored a very good, well worked goal and Omari could have scored another, but maybe that would have been too good to be true after him signing a new deal and returning to the team. “But he was a threat all day and we have been working with the young players a lot. “They have shown me what they can do in training and this club needs to be bringing players through.” Cheltenham play Exeter on Boxing Day before hosting Newport County on Sunday, December 28. Their first match of 2015 is at Oxford United on January 3.
