A Furniture Store for the

Contemporary Country Home You may think of Holloways as the specialist in conservatory and garden furniture, but they have now expanded into all areas of the home — and their style ‘Contemporary Country Living’ reflects how we live now. Furniture that represents contemporary design and British craftsmanship with living, dining, bedroom, conservatory and garden all covered. Furniture that will enhance modern country homes and converted rural buildings — and that is perfect for family life. Sharing their knowledgeable advice, Holloways will help you create your interior — to choose upholstered sofas and match them with occasional tables and chairs, or find an oak dining table for family and entertaining, and choose the prefect chairs to go with it. And then add made-to-measure curtains, cushions, rugs and lighting to bring it all together. You may prefer classic luxury, or an uncluttered, contemporary theme, or the latest trend in vintage style — it is all there. No matter what your taste, from colourful fabrics and floral prints, to plain linens and interesting textures, you won’t be disappointed with the range of fabrics to choose from either. In a delightful countryside setting, Holloways are building a reputation as a great destination store for all types of furniture, plus everything you might need to create a beautiful country home.

FEATURE | Grade I Listed Crescent

Heaven on

EARTH A Sims Hilditch project With projects ranging from country hotels to manor estates, Emma Sims Hilditch is recognised as a specialist in bespoke interiors for listed buildings. So when she was approached to breathe new life into a Grade I listed crescent known as Somerset Place, it was a match made in heaven. enowned for serpentine crescents overlooking the rolling Cotswold landscape, Bath is a world heritage city that wears its architecture proudly. Somerset Place is no exception and has survived as something of a time capsule full of original Georgian plasterwork, fireplaces and original detailing from the late 1790s. “I believe that good design is not merely a discipline but a way of life that seeks to challenge, inspire and engage,” says Emma. “When dealing with period properties, one

R

has to work closely with each client to preserve the authenticity of the architecture but in a way that reflects current lifestyles and needs.” Emma and her team applied this philosophy at Somerset Place, which has a history to match its landmark status. The façade was designed by John Eveleigh in the late 1700s and is a typical example of “Queen Anne front and Mary-Anne back” design characteristic of the era. Original purchasers would have bought a length of

the façade and employed their own architects to finish the rear. The Second World War took a heavy toll on the property, which was badly damaged in the Bath Blitz in 1942. Following the war, the damage was gradually repaired and the building was integrated into the Bath Spa University campus. It was in 2005 that Somerset Place again made history as it became the first crescent in its entirety to be offered for sale in 200 years. Sims Hilditch were approached by

10

COTSWOLD LUXURY

Future Heritage Group to be part of a development team tasked with restoring the property to its original glory. “It is very rare that an entire Grade I listed crescent is put up for sale. In fact, the last time one was on the market was when George III was on the throne so we were thrilled to be a part of its rejuvenation,” says Emma. Bringing her signature style to the duplex garden maisonette was a matter of balancing the investor’s penchant for

colourful contemporary living with the bones of the building. “Our interior design scheme looked to preserve the elegant character of the historic Georgian architecture, whilst sympathetically introducing a contemporary palette of bright accents, luxurious materials, wide oak floor boards and a complementary mix of modern and traditional lighting,” says Emma. Before Sims Hilditch were brought on board, the apartment seemed to have a split

personality. Firstly, the duplex layout meant a physical dislocation between reception rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms on the lower ground floor. Another challenge was that the front rooms had more period features while the rear rooms felt more contemporary as they had been added later. “It was vital that the generous proportions and striking period features took centre stage, so the design was stripped back to create a clean, classical feel that emphasised the natural light and mainly south facing views,” says Emma. With the design concept in place, the first port of call was to address the flooring on the ground floor in order to create a basis for other design elements. “We were keen to achieve a chalky white feel to the floor,” explains Emma. “In this case, the flooring sets the mood and is a signature feature

which pulls the entire ground floor together.” Colour is another feature which is artfully used as a unifying element that also gives each room a unique identity. In the drawing room, colours pick up the artwork from the owners private collection, while the considered use of greens and purples in the rear rooms and open plan kitchen dining area create a chromatic precursor to the landscaped garden. As a keen cook, the kitchen is one of Emma’s favourite areas in the home. When it comes to designing kitchens for clients, the first thing she does is imagine how it could enhance their way of living. “You don’t need a lot of space for a kitchen to work but it is vital that it is easy to navigate. An island is brilliant for making a space sociable and also for acting as a boundary.” Not surprisingly, a key part of the scheme was

making the most of the natural light, especially in the lower ground floor rooms. When it comes to maximising natural light, Emma advises the use of reflective materials like glass, metal and mirror. “These do have a contemporary feel so it’s important to balance these finishes with textured materials like the grass cloth wallpaper which we used on the walls or the elegant linens and sophisticated silks we used for the bedrooms.” The overall result is seamless classic yet contemporary style; the signature look for which Emma is known. “It’s all about giving a nod to the old while creating a link to new,” she says. “It was a delight to be able to do this in a building as unique as Somerset Place.” SIMS-HILDITCH www.simshilditch.com COTSWOLD LUXURY

SILK Topfloor introduces The ‘SCRIPT’ Collection. A Creative Collaboration Between Rug Designer Esti Barnes and Contemporary Calligrapher Hassan Massoudy

ulti-award winning rug designer and founder of Topfloor, Esti Barnes, announces nine new rugs and wallhangings inspired by the work of internationallyacclaimed artist Hassan Massoudy whose bold modern take on the ancient art of calligraphy is prized by art connoisseurs around the world. Esti’s idea for SCRIPT was to interpret Hassan’s two-dimensional artwork, into a more substantial and tactile form. The result captures the energy and dynamism of the original and reflects the blend of Middle and Far Eastern styles that have shaped Massoudy’s work. The result is a happy marriage of art and interior design. The nine designs that form SCRIPT, each hand-made substantially in silk, can be used as rugs or wall-hangings. The rugs are made using a labour-intensive process, which involves each

tiny detail being hand woven, knot-by-knot to fully capture Massoudy’s distinctive style. The rugs can be customised and made to order in their original colourways as limited edition pieces. Topfloor will also undertake fully bespoke commissions, normally for major contract sector clients, taking the original as a starting point. The designs are named PATIENCE, PEACE, DREAM, EARTH, OH FRIEND!, FIRE, WATER and ROOTS. Each one is tagged with its own short proverb or line of verse from the different cultures that inspired Massoudy. Often in stylised Arabic script, these can be included in the finished rug if desired. Commenting on the collaboration, Esti Barnes, founder of Topfloor, said: ‘This has been two years in the making. As a designer and having grown up in Istanbul, I have always had a fascination for the classical forms of calligraphy. I tracked down the best weavers we could find who could handle the incredibly detailed work and I should say we are pleased with the result’. Massoudy added, ‘When Esti first proposed her ideas I was intrigued. I know a lot about art and calligraphy but apart from the carpets from my childhood growing up in Iraq, not much about rugs. However, as I start to understand the very different techniques involved in our two crafts, I can only say how impressed I am with the result’. The SCRIPT Collection prices start from £1750 per square metre and may be ordered direct from TopFloor, 2-6 Chelsea Harbour Design Centre, London SW10 0XE. T: +44 20 7795 3333. FEATURE | Contemporary Manor House

Dare to

DREAM A Sims Hilditch project Transforming an 11th Century Grade II listed manor house into a contemporary family home was all about rethinking the space for award winning interior designer, Emma Sims Hilditch erched high above the local village and set amongst rolling lawns and 1 acre lake, this charming Dorset manor house enjoys an outlook almost as spectacular as its history. The property dates back to the time of William the Conqueror, who gifted the manor to one of his favourite noblemen. The building literally has its heritage etched into the very stone, with names and dates carved into window frames and other unlikely places. When the manor house was recently purchased, the new owners decided the time had come to transform it from its manorial past into

a light-filled, contemporary home. To assist them in striking the right balance between preserving the patina of the past while bringing the interior up to date, the owners turned to Cotswold based interior designer, Emma Sims Hilditch. Emma is known for her skill in breathing new life into listed buildings. Hers is an understated aesthetic that introduces contemporary lifestyle elements in a manner that is sympathetic to history and heritage. “Listed buildings should be more than just time capsules for period features,” says Emma.

82

COTSWOLD LUXURY

“They should be lived in and enjoyed in a way that makes sense for contemporary needs but without jeopardising their rich character.” For Emma, the starting point is always to strip back as much as possible in order to get a sense of the bones of a property. “It’s important to peel away the layers of previous decoration to discover the building’s raw materiality,” she explains. In the case of this Dorset manor house, she discovered something of an historical jigsaw puzzle; Norman and Georgian architecture pieced together with beautiful wooden beams,

original stone walls, ancient flagstone floors, large fireplaces and detailed wooden panelling. “This is where I drew my inspiration before looking at how to design the interior in a way that made sense for my client’s lifestyle and the space,” says Emma. The key task was to re-evaluate the existing configuration of the rooms, especially on the ground floor. As the clients did not want a formal dining room but hankered after a large kitchen and open living area, Emma made some bold changes. “The goal was to redefine the space to be better for modern living,” says Emma. “By doing away with the formal dining room, we were able to relocate the drawing room into this stunning Georgian wing of the house. We then reconfigured the old drawing room into a large open-plan kitchen-dining room, which gave us further scope to create a beautifully functional laundry and bootroom in what had been the old kitchen.” The kitchen was an especially satisfying area to design as it initially presented a number of

challenges in terms of introducing fitted furniture to crooked walls and uneven floors. Emma’s solution was to design bespoke cabinets that perfectly fit the space. “Sometimes standard cabinets just don’t do the trick but our team has an ace up our sleeve when it comes to knowledge and skill in furniture design.” Emma also reconfigured the rooms on the first and second floors to create a beautiful master bedroom and en suite bathroom that make the most of the open beams. The ceiling height is accentuated by the clever use of wallpaper to create an airy yet intimate feeling. The overall result is seamlessly classic yet contemporary; an aesthetic that Emma cultivates in both her work and personal life. “I believe that good design is not merely a discipline but a way of life. It was a delight to be able to apply this philosophy to a building as unique as this.” SIMS-HILDITCH www.simshilditch.com

MAYAN DISCOVERY Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt experienced the mayans, markets and marlins of Central America. uatemala & Belize are unique, striking and a bit of a revelation. My journey through Central America sits high up there as a shining highlight of my travelling life. The story of this adventure could absorb volumes so I will speed through some of the unforgettable experiences. The old colonial city of Antigua is charming with its cobblestone streets, historic relics and colonial plazas. It was flattened by an earthquake in 1773 and has been extensively restored and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1979. It is a treat to meander the streets and enjoy the wonderful sights. Just west of Antigua on the Pan-American Highway is Lake Atitlan. Travelling these

roads is a spectacle in itself with pickups driven by men in cowboy hats; mighty trucks, and old US school buses whizzing around to keep to the schedules. They call them ‘chicken buses’ because so many passengers travel with their chickens. There are some wonderful places to stay at Lake Atitlan from which to enjoy the stupendous views of the lake and surrounding scenery. Inset is a view from the botanical gardens at Hotel Lake Atitlan which is on the lake shore and wonderful for bird watching and some gentle hiking. Case Palopo is a boutique property with exuberant colours, full of character, ensconced in a dress-circle seat above the eastern shore. For a ‘wanna-be’ anthropologist,

Guatemala’s markets are a complete treat for people-watching, colour and action. Chichicastenango is a wonderfully authentic market, still catering for the locals but is also popular with tourists searching for local treasures, such as painted masks and embroidery to take home as souvenirs as well as all the beautifully woven bags, hats, toys and articles of clothing. Off the beaten track you can find yourself almost the only outsider in some areas, such as Solola Market. The women wear the huipiles, which is part smock, part poncho bedazzling in fiery coloured cotton cloth with the men wearing embroidered trousers. Each of the country’s ethnic groups has its own costume and language and the markets offer a fascinating insight into such a passionate culture. An unforgettable experience is to then take a short flight up the Flores to see the great jungle ruins of Tikal, where vast, preChristian temples protrude from the forest canopy. Tikal National Park is in the heart of the jungle surrounded by lush vegetation and boasts one of the major sites of Mayan civilizations. The ceremonial centre contains superb temples and palaces and the surrounding countryside is scattered with remains of dwellings. Historically, culturally and architecturally it is breathtaking. My journey took me from here by boat to Belize. The river was festooned with woodpeckers, herons, kingfishers, darters, egrets,

kites, iguanas and crocodiles. One of the most stunning moments was when trees laden with dozens of macaws seemed to take off! It was the macaws of course, in pairs taking flight while squawking loudly at our passing boats, their plumage all the incandescent colours of a hallucinogenic rainbow! Another one of travel’s unforgettable moments. Belize was a treat after all the adventure and excitement travelling across Central America. Belize boasts the world’s second largest Barrier Reef stretching 185 miles all the way from Mexico down through the Caribbean. This is where my ethereal self morphs into a semi aquatic being and becomes one with the ocean with the thrill of gliding above the reef wall as it drops off the caye into the deep blue beyond. Clustered to this wall a coral Garden of Eden is home to every describable Damsel, Wrasse, Angel and Butterfly fish. Blue Surgeonfish dodge the Parrotfish and Clownfish nestle between the tentacles of its swaying soft coral home. On each of my snorkelling sorties a posse of Curious Pipefish lead the way with Spotted Unicorn almost bumping into the glass of my mask with their long snouts. Suddenly a shoal of a hundred or more Blue Triggerfish appear gliding so close their tiny red fangs almost touch the glass. In the deep against a backdrop of navy blue a tapestry of Moorish Idol remain suspended as if on fine threads

from the surface. Out of the blue Eagle Rays cruise the wall closely followed by a Grey Reef Shark. A Giant Black Moray Eel rises up from the folds of his coral den baring his jaws menacingly. I take a wide sweep to avoid an over-sized Titan Trigger Fish which has been known to deliver a generous bite if feeling territorial and discover a shy Lion Fish hiding in his cave. It was a joy to watch a turtle foraging for a morsel he was so determined to retrieve he used his front flippers to dig and his beak to bite at the coral hidey-hole of his prey. Eventually he surfaced for three big gulps of air and then remained motionless eyeballing me, seemingly as intrigued by me as I him. The coastline is dotted with hundreds of cayes offering superb watersports, fishing and diving or simply a jolly good flop on a beautiful sandy beach to soak up some wonderful rays. in search of the

BIG SIX Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt journeyed to East Africa in search of Africa’s safari tiara and remains enchanted forever by the ultimate ‘Out of Africa’ experience. enya is the original home of the safari and in my opinion is the most romantic of all African countries. This was my first ever experience of the continent, encounter with African wildlife and the magic found here. It was love at first sight, smell and sound. Kenya is a place of legend where proud warrior tribes blend with the names of intrepid explorers of a bygone era and where chic colonial homesteads ensure the allure of the country is truly enduring. The beauty and diversity of Kenya’s landscapes with their never-ending horizons are one of its greatest highlights and when combined with the extraordinary game viewing in parks such as the Masai Mara, Samburu, Amboseli or Laikipia, it is easy to see why the country remains so popular and

engaging. Sleeping under canvas in exclusive tented camps, staying in privately owned bush homesteads in the remote wilderness or merely lounging in a hammock on the powder white beaches of the coast, Kenya’s appeal is unique. My trip to Kenya was a whirlwind of adventure beginning with a sensational hike through the equatorial forests and Jurassic flora and fauna around the foothills of Mt Kenya. The hike culminated in the thrill of climbing ‘Kirinyaga’ the mountain of whiteness, to the summit of Kenya’s snowcapped highest peak (5,248m or 17,058 ft). Following the ‘high’ of the climb I travelled overland far North towards Ethiopia and through the blistering heat of the vast arid northern desert in the hope of palaeontological discovery. The shimmering

mirage of the turquoise Jade Sea, better known as Lake Turkana, sky rocketed into view through the haze. It was a thrill to plunge into the lake’s cooling waters sending small Nile Crocodiles plunging for the depths! One of the primary reasons for visiting this area was to fulfil an anthropological ambition to visit the cradle of humankind, with its abundance of hominid fossils and the site where a 1.6 million year old complete Homo erectus skeleton was discovered. An unforgettable part of the itinerary was a four day camel safari through part of the Great Rift Valley, following the sandy flow of dried up river beds. We spent the evenings feasting on delicious local ingredients conjured into appetising meals over campfires and dancing to the drum rhythms of the ‘jumping dance’ with our Masai guides and sleeping out in the open under the stars and most magical night sky. The anticipation of big game spotting was mounting but first yet another of Kenya’s sights presented itself at Lake Naivasha as every imaginable exotic water bird, together with a pink cloudy vision of thousands of flamingos covered the surface of the water. Finally, the day of my first ever game drive had arrived – I was at The Laikipia Plateau. The Reserve covers more than two million acres of wilderness with habitats ranging from dusty plains to verdant grasslands and rocky hills, and watered by two great rivers, the area offers some wonderful big game viewing all under the steely gaze of the snow-capped Mt Kenya. With adrenalin surging at the anticipation of spotting the ‘Big Five’, the open sided Landrover set off to roam the sweeping plains and gorges teeming with game. The ever changing view from the vehicle brought increasing levels of excitement

as buffalo, gazelle, Grevy’s Zebra, lion, oryx, gerenuk, ostrich, hartebeest and rhino were spotted. Elephants foraged amongst dense clumps of palm and a family of wart hog frisked around an isolated watering hole. At sunset more predators appeared with a leopard padding through the bush on a hunting mission. I had hoped to see the endangered wild dog – but maybe next time! In a perfect world my next visit to Kenya will combine three life-long dreams all of which are ‘must do before I die’ experiences. The first is to travel by hot air balloon over the Masai Mara and marvel at the wildebeest migration in full flow. The second is to head off into the wilderness on horseback and gallop across one of the country’s rugged savannahs teeming with big game. However, the third and most yearned for is to meet the sixth member of the ‘big six’ the mountain gorilla which is accessible via a short air hop to neighbouring Rwanda for what is surely the world’s most compelling wildlife experience of all … to hike through the lush rainforests of the Virunga Volcanoes to track and meet our closest cousin, the mountain gorilla, in his natural environment. If you would like to visit Africa for some grit, glamour or both, itineraries can be tailor-made for you by World Odyssey – for more information on anything to do with Kenya, Rwanda or anywhere on the planet, please visit www.world-odyssey.com – follow us @World_Odyssey and/or Facebook or call one of our travel specialists for advice on: 01905 731373
