Welcome to the 100th edition of Cotswold Style! This August Cotswold Style is getting into the Olympic spirit and even if you’re not heading off to Rio you can still experience all the fun from the pages of this month’s magazine. There are many Cotswold based Olympians and our Real Life is Olympic Gold medalist Alex Gregory. This magnificent rower is part of the squad for the Men’s Coxless Fours and will once again be trying to emulate the gold winning crews of the past four Olympics – not much pressure then! We also feature other local athletes including the courageous Mel Nicholls, the Cheltenham based Wheelchair star who is destined for a Paralympian medal in Rio. Rachel Cappuccini sets the scene for celebratory parties with delicious Brazilian recipes and our Interior writers are taking us to the carnival with a riot of colour for the home. Fitness expert Luciano Kydd gets you into the training zone of an Olympian while Beauty writer Catherine Shortall recommends some make-up trends that will work through the sweat and heat of the summer. As we near the end of August, parents’ thoughts are turning to the education of their children. Our Schools feature this month highlights some of the independent schools in the region and the Head of Dean Close Pre-Preparatory School, gives her advice on keeping your child’s brain active over the holidays. If you’re on a stay-cation, why not visit one of the Cotswolds’ Beer Gardens and enjoy a local festival tasting some of the bestproduced real ales and ciders. GB ROWER, ALEX GREGORY Georgie Analisè met up with her old swimming teammate, GB Rower, Alex Gregory MBE, ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Alex is an Olympic Medallist, World Champion, and father to Jasper, Daisy and Jesse. He is proudly supported at home by partner, Emily, his parents and his brother. With Olympic fever building across the country, I was very excited for the chance to interview Alex Gregory. Over the last few years, rowing has become a sport associated with British medal winners and Alex and his team are hoping to row to Olympic Gold. Born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Alex Gregory is Team Captain of Leander Club, a world champion rower and Olympic medallist. He is also Patron of the British Exploring Youth Charity. I went to meet him at the famous Redgrave and Pinsent Lake, which sits just behind the M4, its location protected, bubble-like, from the traffic noise. The glistening lake welcomed me as I arrived to find Alex and his team getting ready for training. The rowing community, contrary to popular belief, is a non-elitist sport full of friendly people who welcome newcomers. Alex Gregory is testament to this and is one of the best representatives the sport could wish for. He is part of the current Men’s Coxless Fours, which is made up of Alex, Mo Sbihi, George Nash and Constantine Louloudis. The Men’s Coxless Fours, in this very boat, has experienced a stratospheric rise to Gold medal victory; captained by 5-time Olympic champion, Steve Redgrave. Alex was also part of the team who won 2012 Olympic Gold in the Men’s Coxless Fours on ‘Super Saturday’, with Andrew Triggs-Hodge, Tom James, and Nailsworth’s very own, Peter Reed. Four years on, Alex holds the only
remaining seat from that boat and fully intends to light the rowing flame once more with his 2016 Olympic crew. This year they have tasted victory in the European Championships in Brandenburg, Germany and went on to beat the Australian team in the World Cup event in Lucerne. This promising crew certainly appears to be in a very strong position as the clock counts down for Rio. Hi Alex! It’s so nice to see you again! Can you tell me how and why you got involved with rowing? One of my best mates, Alex Cook, suggested I come down to the local rowing club in Evesham, but I wasn’t keen. I finally relented and from the first time I stepped into a boat, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I was welcomed into the junior set up by coaches, Keith Rafter and Dave Perry. I was greatly encouraged by them and their support lit the fire for me. I was incredibly lucky to have these two great men introducing me to the sport.

When did you first realize your ambitions as an athlete? I started out as a swimmer, which you know as we used to swim together. I wasn’t a natural talent but I soon realised that hard work was just as important. Those thought processes taught me a lot about myself. I was very dedicated and took things very seriously. I was never pushed by my parents. It was always me who wanted to get better and train harder. By the time I was in my late teens, I wanted to be the best in the world at something. Rowing became that something.

Tell me a bit about your formative years in Gloucestershire. I grew up in Broadway before moving to a small village called Wormington. I attended Cheltenham’s Richard Pate Junior School, followed by Bredon Hill Middle School and finally Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham. I was lucky to have inspirational and supportive teachers at all my schools. Growing >>>

up, my brother and I would spend our days at our parent’s Garden Centre in Toddington. My parents are amazing and have been a truly incredible support through the very tough times and been there to see me celebrate my successes. I have many, happy memories of growing up in the area that saw the start of my sporting career. How important is it for your team performance that you have comradeship and banter? I have been in the GB rowing team for three Olympiads and this team is one of the most supportive and friendly crews we have had. Our bond is vital. For six months of the year we are competing for a seat in a World Championship or Olympic crew. There is no let-up; for seven days a week we trial against each other for one of those seats, 24 hours a day. Despite this high pressure situation, team spirit, good humour and comradeship shines through. Once crews are selected, we work together to race the real competition. This sudden change in mentality can be to our advantage as it is far easier to focus on beating other nations instead of our friends.

Who are your sporting idols and have you met any of them? Growing up in the sport I had some idols that I got to meet. From the first time I met the Swedish single sculler, Lassi Karonen, he was kind, friendly and helpful, going out of his way to congratulate or commiserate, showing interest in my achievements and offering advice. He is someone that I will never forget. Australian, Drew Ginn was a member of the famous Australian ‘Awesome Foursome’ in the ‘90’s. At London 2012 he was 3-time Olympic gold medal winner and going for his 4th. Drew was a rowing hero and in 2011 and 2012, I found myself competing against him! However, he would always show me and my crew respect. We would talk at races, wish each other luck, and when we discovered we had both named our sons Jasper; our friendship was cemented!

I follow your world travels on social media. Do you have a favourite place? I’m so lucky to visit some wonderful countries. The reality is that most of the time I see a hotel room, bus and a lake and that’s literally it!
Q
Lake Bled in Slovenia is one of the most beautiful lakes I have rowed on. Its crystal clear water is surrounded by forests and castles. I won the World Championships in 2011 on those waters. Of course, Rio de Janeiro has to be mentioned. We visited a couple of years ago to get to know the city before the Olympics. I was blown away by the whole environment. The people are friendly and colourful; so passionate about life. It’s like nowhere I have experienced before. It’s so exciting to have the opportunity to compete there. Usually the rowing lake is far out of the city’s boundaries. In Rio, it’s in the heart of the capital. If I sit on the start line in my Olympic final and look up, I will be staring at the statue of Christ The Redeemer. How inspiring is that?
Historically the Coxless Fours has been a very successful boat. What are your aspirations for Rio? There’s absolutely no question we are going over to Rio to win Gold. Great

Britain has won the Coxless Four events at the Olympics four times, which is already a record in any boat class. The weight of expectation is upon us but my confidence in this crew couldn’t be higher. I’m rowing with three of the best athletes in the world. It’s a pleasure to be in this crew and this Olympics is very exciting for all of us.
Assuming that you are successful in Rio, what opportunities will this open up? I have been rowing now for over 15 years. I already have an Olympic Gold medal and five world titles to my name. Since London 2012, I have worked hard to secure some fantastic partnerships and sponsors, which has allowed me to continue rowing. I’m extremely grateful for this support and have formed close friendships because of it. Habitat First Group, the owners of the Lower Mill Estate near Cirencester, has been amazing and after the Olympics I will be running rowing workshops on the lakes of Cotswold Water Park. I can’t wait to work with this fantastic business. Green People is an organic cosmetics company, which has a beautiful philosophy and business culture. They will

be supporting me in my journey and I love that their outlook on life and nature mirrors my own. Bremont is a mechanical watch company based in Henley on Thames, for which I am now an ambassador. Bremont are great advocates of adventure, like me and their dedication to what they do is truly inspiring. The makers of Herring Shoes have become good friends of mine. Their commitment to producing the highest quality British goods inspires me to be forward thinking, to improve and evolve. These British companies have supported me and helped me get to Rio in more ways than they will ever know. I can’t thank them enough and I really hope to make both them and my family proud; in particular for my partner, Emily, who has been such a fantastic support to me, caring for our children and simply being there through everything. I would love to bring home one last Gold. There isn’t a single person who comes into this sport expecting to become rich and famous. We row to better ourselves, to represent our country and for the honour of being added to the coveted list of Olympic medallists. The bonds and friendships forged along the way are
important to me. After Rio I am considering leaving the sport and moving onto other projects. I am open to ideas and offers!
I have recently become a member of Gloucester Rowing Club. Can you offer any advice for people interested in getting into rowing? I would recommend it to anyone. Rowing is a whole body work out, and non-weight bearing so it’s really good for you. I would recommend you take a trip down to your local rowing club, have a chat and get out on the water. Rowing has given me so much in my life and I would love more people to take up the sport.

RETRO RIO Clive Burling is taking our interiors through a Brazilian inspired journey
“I’m hearing the light from the window, I’m seeing the sound of the sea....’’ Our memories can surprise us sometimes. It never ceases to amaze me when a totally long ’forgotten’ experience suddenly appears into my thoughts, seemingly from nowhere. The ’trigger’ can be so subtle that it’s hardly noticeable. Sometimes a specific aroma (in my case it’s often perfume!),a piece of music or even a word can set off a chain of memories and recollections of a particular event. Take Rio for example. Whenever I hear that word I am transported back to 1977 and one of the first ’pop videos’, the hilariously surreal solo offering by former Monkee Mike Nesmith. Sometimes I even sing to myself those (to me) unforgettable lyrics; I think I will travel to Rio, using the music for flight, there’s nothing I know of in Rio, but it’s something to do with the night.... As this month is all about Rio, I thought I would do some research into the Brazilian look, predicted by some designers to be a big influence on our home interiors this year. Regular readers will know that I am a big fan of bold, bright colours, so I really hope that some of these predictions become reality. British fashion designer Henry Holland, who has launched a collaboration with Habitat this year, A selection of ’alfresco brights’ from Sainsburys will definitely brighten up your Rio Olympic summer!
says: “Expect bold and brash colour clashes, vibrant patterns and a lot of mixed materials as fashion makes its mark on interiors.” Botanicals will continue to be a strong seasonal look but translated into psychedelic colours and clashing palettes for statement effect in place of a more natural, organic vibe. This also feeds into a jungle trend with animal prints and exotic palms alongside retro rattans and natural bamboos, which will be taking centre stage as materials. This year is going to be the year of the fashion collaboration and will see ideas from the catwalk bring translated into interiors with a range of different fashion designers making the jump into designing for the home. It’s an exciting trend for both fashion and home markets resulting in unexpected products between brands that push boundaries and explore a different way of looking at interiors. Philippa Prinsloo, Design Manager for John Lewis Home, says Brazilian themes will be big. “Brazilian brings out vibrant greens that celebrate the more exotic flora and fauna of jungle and the Forest. The bright colours help to accessorise a space and do so with a bit of wild abandon. “A saturated colour palette dominates with oranges, purples and greens mixing with materials such as bamboo and wood to create interesting outdoor furniture ranges and accessories.“ Designer Sara Story says, “Brazilian Modern is a trend I am most looking forward to in 2016, particularly the beautiful sculptural forms and use of raw materials and exotic woods. The
unique pieces complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.“ At Harrods, Annalise Fard, Director of Home and Design, has observed the influence of Brazil. “From furnishings to food, fashion and accessories, from Aquazzura, Proenza Schouler and Salvatore Ferragamo with their paintbox brights and jazzy prints.“ She has styled a tropical room as part of a ’London edit’ with new Matthew Williamson furniture just arrived in store from Duresta and geometric palm-print paper from Cole’s. To summarise, my favourite quote comes from Jonathan Adler, potter, designer and author; ’’We live in an anything-goes world where it’s okay to mix high with low, mid-century with minimalist modern, colours, patterns, and everything in between. The best trend I’m seeing is people forgetting about the ’rules’ and loving what they love unapologetically.’’ Whatever you decide to do and wherever you find inspiration the most important advice I can give is to ENJOY doing it. In these times of ever more depressing world news we can at least brighten up our lives with an interiors makeover. I’m sure that I will soon have other memories of Rio to recall but for now I’m happy to keep on singing; it’s only a whimsical notion, to fly down to Rio tonight, and I probably won’t fly down to Rio... but then again, I just might! Cotswolds Culture OLYMPIC GREATS Susan Blanchfield recalls some of the inspirational sporting achievements from the world’s Olympiads The Saudi Olympic committee has approved four female athletes to compete as part of Gulf Kingdom’s team at the August 2016 Rio Games. Women in Saudi Arabia face significant hurdles to take part in sport; as well as the requirement to wear head-to-toe garments in public, observe strict rules on gender segregation and obtain permission from a male guardian to travel, or study, women’s gyms are scarce in the Kingdom. The Olympics have a rich history of inspiring achievements, and the bringing together of a myriad of nations and cultures, means they have considerably evolved since the first modern Games held in the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens in1896. The Games have had their fair share of controversial moments too but milestones like the one above, leave a lasting and indelible impression on the world as well as contributing to the Games’ core values of excellence, friendship and respect. By their very nature, the Games have inevitably formed the backdrop to unforgettable moments spanning human rights, gender equality, the thwarting of a dictator’s ambitions, the power of the human spirit… and a formidable moustache; these are just a few of the significant moments in Olympics that have passed into the hall of fame. Here is our Cotswold top five trivia tattle moments in no particular order; First female athletes; 1900 Paris Games Women were not allowed to compete in the Olympics until the 1900 Paris Games when their participation in lawn tennis and golf events finally secured a position for female athletes. A century later, the London 2012 Olympics signified a new gender milestone with the debut of Women’s Boxing matches in Olympic history, with female athletes from every competing country.
A Thwarted Dictator: 1936 Berlin Games Hitler wanted to use the Olympics as a platform to demonstrate that his Aryan race was physically superior to everyone else but black American superstar Jesse Owens proved him wrong with a remarkable four-gold medal performance. His German rival, Luz Long, Hitler’s Olympic hope, was the first to congratulate him whilst a furious Hitler watched. After the Games, Owens and Long began a friendship which endured between their families even after Luz was killed in WW11. In a moving tribute to the power of peace and friendship, at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, the children and grandchildren of Owens and Long presented the long jump medals.
Paralympics – first wheelchair athletes compete: 1948 London Games English doctor Ludwig Guttmann founded the International Wheelchair Games to help rehabilitate wounded veterans of World War II. Using ground breaking sports therapy, he invited wheelchair athletes to compete, and the event eventually became the modern Paralympic Games.
‘The Moustache’: 1972, Munich Games In the case of swimming’s Mark Spitz, you can never have enough gold medals. At the Munich Olympics in 1972, Spitz and his formidable ‘tache would win a

total of 8 gold medals, his upper lip, upon which rested the famed prolific moustache, grown ‘because a coach in college said I couldn’t grow one’, he kept it as a portable lucky mascot after his success and an alarming trend was born.
Inspirational moments: 1968, Mexico Games As the deeply unpopular but prolific medal collector, Carl Lewis demonstrated, it is not just about the winning. Tanzanian John Stephen Akhwari’s race is often cited as inspirational, despite the fact that he was the last man to finish the 1968 Olympic Marathon. Unused to competing at high altitudes, he fell during the race, badly cutting himself and dislocating his knee. He finished and more than an hour after the winner (his body visibly bleeding and battered), hobbled into the stadium to a standing ovation from the audience. When he was asked why he did not just give up, his answer was: “My country did not send me 10,000 miles to start the race, they sent me 10,000 miles to finish the race – you know, we’re not defined by set backs we’re defined by our response to them.” The quote continues to inspire. Through the Garden Gate our media horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, heads east for an artistic botanical treat….. o I thought I’d follow Peter Pan this month, and invite you all to fly east with me towards Kensington Gardens for a summer outing as pretty as a picture. Your destination is the Serpentine Sackler Gallery garden, recently designed and planted by one of the greatest garden designers of our times: Arabella Lennox Boyd. I had the pleasure of meeting Arabella about 6 years ago at her home, Gresgarth Hall, in Lancashire. Like the lady herself, her own garden illustrated perfect precision with the utmost elegance – heavenly wide herbaceous borders, stunning lake and miscanthus sinesis lining a border like glistening fountains erupting from the ground below. Arabella has been designing gardens for over 40 years and holds numerous gold medals for creations at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Her work can

even be seen here in The Cotswolds where private individuals have commissioned her expertise. Back to Kensington and the planting that sensitively loops around the prestigious gallery that was opened in 2013. A magnificent Chestnut fans its branches in approval at the new kids on the botanical block – an often aromatic army of enthusiastic young plants proud to be alongside such a learned old gentleman. His wrinkled bark certainly needs no application of Ponds to keep him at his most beautiful. How pleased he will be to see the reflection of the surrounding foliage as the Autumnal conkers shine away in the next few months. Anyway, enough conker accreditation! For this is all about the fantastic new array of planting that lies in wait. Borders have been created to flower throughout the season in a naturalistic

It has been 3 years from inception to the launch of the gardens in May of this year, but well worth the wait. grasses gather throughout from miscanthus to pennisetum and sesleria – billowing in the summer breeze and tickling our senses ahead of their autumnal flowering finale. A piece of art to match that within. Rosa odorata ‘Mutabilis’, a classic china rose, is worth its weight in gold and like an Olympian, just keeps on going. Another Serpentine stunner, is cornus controversa ‘Variegata’, otherwise
known as the Wedding Cake Tree due to its tiers of branches, definitely not to be cut! Herbs on the other hand are regularly for the chop as the chef selects them for use in the on-site restaurant. More presented scent comes from trachelospermum jasminoides – the star jasmine – sweet and sensational and puffing out the final few weeks of its perfume as the summer fades. However this is a garden that does not
fade, Arabella has ensured there is always something visually on offer to establish its position alongside the grandest of Royal Parks. In her words: “I hope that my design will bring beauty and a greater understanding of the aesthetic and almost spiritual joys of plants, trees and the natural world to gallery visitors from around the world”. Cotswoldia Angela Chancellor really isn’t a sporty type s I am writing I am glued to the telly on this rather historic day as David Cameron hands the baton over to Theresa May. Following the vote-rage hysteria of Brexit and then Regrexit all hopes are pinned on the lady of the moment and her kitten heels, kicking the rest of the buffoons of our governing class into some sort of sensible order. What a shambles it has been and no matter which side of the fence you were on, I think most of us can agree that at times it was like watching Peter Pan on acid. We salute you Wendy, now please sort out the lost boys and next time we consider a referendum could we possibly stipulate that anyone wishing to cast a vote, is required to answer 10 basic questions on history, economics and politics correctly before they are allowed to tick that box on the ballot paper. Much better to turn our thoughts to nobler sports where rules are understood and generally observed and poor behaviour is frowned upon and penalised. Perhaps best not to mention the football but tennis was a resounding success. Andy Murray delivered again and again and has another nice shiny cup to pop on his mantlepiece. It may be only ž the size of

the original, which remains the property of the All England Lawn Tennis Club but at 13.5 inches, I reckon that will still do nicely to chill his nice bottle of bubbly. If he were to make a third win at Wimbledon we will have to wait and see whether he will still indeed be representing Great Britain. If the Scots are going to go Euro I do hope they get on with it and do it quickly and quietly as we are all suffering from politics fatigue and have had quite enough of pompous politicians continually parping hot air at us. Enough already! Meanwhile I am feeling inspired and am perusing the idea of a tennis court in our scrubby field, not that we can afford one but I can't afford a Birkin either and it doesn't stop a bit of browsing and a lot of wishful thinking. There is of course the small issue of planning permission, not sure how keen the neighbours would be considering the somewhat alarming hostility from some, not all thank goodness, following the one single occasion a friend allowed himself the extravagance of landing a helicopter in it but maybe with David Cameron's attentions back on the home patch, there might be hope. Despite the general excitement from
some of my more sport mad friends I am in two minds about the Olympics ahead of us; I am not sure what to wish for. Either we will have dull weather in August and will be pleased to have something to take our mind off the gloom outside, or that it's glorious and the last thing I will want to do is be stuck indoors watching either the valiant or doping aided efforts of all those Olympic hopefuls sweating it out in Rio. Knowing a thing or two about traffic and administration in Rio as a dear friend has been living there for the past years and regaling us with stories, I can only marvel at how they are going to pull it off. Weeks and weeks of all that skimpy lycra might be just a bit too much so I am quite tempted with something a little grittier and definitely muddier on our doorstep. Cirencester is hosting a 'Tough Mudder' on the 20 & 21st August this year. They even run a half one for anyone not too sure if they are up for the full adrenaline junkie playground experience, so any fellow lightweights that don't fancy the full grunt but may consider getting properly grubby with me, lets give it a go. If you want to make sure your little ones aren't turning too soft there is a 'Fruit Shoot Mini Mudder' for the 7-12 year olds. Sadly as with so many things these days there is as yet no provision for the mid-teen bracket as you have to be sixteen to participate in the adult course. My boys could think of nothing more delightful than scrabbling around in the mud for a day. Possibly only dampened slightly by the need for a 'proper' shower, one involving soap and shampoo not just a quick rinse, as is generally favoured. Alas my surrogate babysitter/in-house entertainment centre, the one loved by kids but loathed by parents, Xbox, will have to plug the gap yet again. There is also little here, targeted at the lost years of middle teenage-dom with the usual yawning hole between Lego something or other and the full on dreaded GTA. If you have been able to avoid this please do pass on your secrets!

Tattooed Team GB Olympian, Chris Walker-Hebborn is soon to be stroking through the pool in Rio as he competes in his second Olympic games. An ambitious youth and junior athlete, at the age of just 26, Chris’ swimming achievements include two Commonwealth Games titles and three European Championship titles with the Commonwealth Games and European Championships 100-metre backstroke gold medals under his belt. Cotswold Style Columnist Ellie Mainwaring caught up with Chris poolside. Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?
Hawaii; I could join friends of mine who live over there and besides, what’s not to love about the stunning land and seascape. What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?
Although not technically jewellery, I’d take my Olympic Ring. Countless hours of blood, sweat and tears went into achieving it and it was my first Olympics and on home turf too. I couldn’t be without it. You can take one item of choice with you and one to leave behind with family.
A phone for me and a phone for my family and friends so we could stay in touch.
The epic that is Shawshank Redemption. It would while away a fair few hours and I could immerse myself in the acting from some great legends. What movie would you take?

A tough one to pick from the vast breadth of music I listen too, but if I had to pick just one it would be Whitney Houston – she’s incredible, there’s no comparison. What would be your last supper before departing?
My Mum’s roast dinner. She’s by far one of the best cooks in the land, beating Mary Berry, James Martin and Jamie Oliver hands down, although I am slightly biased.

The ever-wild stunt man and comedian, Steve-O. For sure there would never be a dull moment. He’s funny and fearless – a recipe for a good time if you ask me! What are your most treasured wardrobe pieces?
My collection of trainers. I can’t keep track of how many pairs I have; it’s something of an obsession now and I’d like to take all of them with me. If you had a superpower what would it be?
The ability to fly. It’s not life saving or that unusual but the thought of flying anywhere in the world at anytime of day or night sounds ideal.

A JOURNEY OF MAYAN DISCOVERY
Self-professed adventuress and Travel Writer Lucy Garbutt experienced the Mayans, markets and marlins of Central America travelled overland from Mexico and into Guatemala’s old colonial city of Antigua. The city is charming with its cobblestone streets, historic relics and colonial plazas and it was a treat to meander along the streets and soak up this wonderful architecture. It was flattened by an earthquake in 1773 and has been extensively restored and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1979. Just west of Antigua on the PanAmerican Highway is beautiful Lake Atitlan. Travelling these roads is a spectacle in itself with pickups driven by men in cowboy hats, mighty trucks and old US school buses whizzing around to keep to the schedules. They call them ‘chicken buses’ because so many passengers travel with their chickens. Chickens and other small livestock are

welcome to travel but I was kicked off the bus for eating a locust fruit on board. The fruit does smell like a cross between bad cheese and used socks but tastes absolutely delicious. There was an almighty row between passengers causing the driver to pull over; blissfully unaware, mid-munch while enjoying the delicious candy-floss texture of this exotic fruit and the stupendous views of the lake, I was asked to disembark by a flustered driver and to either dispose of the offending fruit or I was not welcome back on board! The scene was quite a pantomime as my Spanish is nowhere near good enough to get to the bottom of the commotion without a game of charades. Being a newly post-grad anthropologist at the time of travel, I found Guatemala’s markets were a

complete treat for people-watching, colour and action. Chichicastenango commonly known as ChiChi is a wonderfully authentic market, still catering for the locals and I loved bargaining for treasures to take home as souvenirs, such as painted masks and embroidery as well as all the beautifully woven bags, hats, toys and articles of clothing. Off the beaten track I found myself almost the only outsider in some areas, such as Solola Market. The women wear the huipiles, which is part smock,

Style Travel The great jungle ruins of Tikal
part poncho bedazzling in fiery coloured cotton cloth with the men wearing embroidered trousers. Each of the country’s ethnic groups has its own costume and language and the markets offer a fascinating insight into such a passionate culture. The next unforgettable experience after a short flight up to Flores is to see the great jungle ruins of Tikal, where vast, pre-Christian temples protrude from the forest canopy - historically, culturally and architecturally it is breathtaking. Tikal National Park is in the heart of the jungle surrounded by lush vegetation and boasts one of the major sites of Mayan civilizations. The ceremonial centre contains superb temples and palaces and the surrounding countryside is scattered with remains of dwellings. My journey took me from here by boat into Belize. The river journey was magical and festooned with tropical plants and we spotted birds such as woodpeckers, herons, kingfishers, darters, egrets, kites as well as iguanas and crocodiles. One of the most stunning moments was when trees laden with dozens of macaws seemed to take off! It was the macaws of course, in pairs, taking flight while squawking loudly at our passing boats, their plumage all the incandescent colours of a hallucinogenic rainbow! Pretty soon I found myself in the
Cayo district in the heart of central Belize and the activity centre of the country offering fantastic caving, horse riding, hiking, canoeing and wonderful Mayan ruin exploration. Belize boasts the world’s second largest Barrier Reef stretching all the way from Mexico down through the Caribbean.This is where my ethereal self morphed into a semi-aquatic being and became at one with the ocean, with the thrill of gliding above the reef wall as it dropped off the caye into the deep blue beyond. Clustered to this wall, a coral Garden of Eden is home to every describable Damsel, Wrasse, Angel and Butterfly fish. Blue Surgeonfish dodge the Parrotfish and Clownfish nestled between the tentacles of its swaying soft coral home. On each of my snorkelling sorties a posse of Curious Pipefish led the way with a few Spotted unicorn fish almost bumping into the glass of my mask with their long snouts. In the deep against a backdrop of navy blue, a tapestry of Moorish Idol remained suspended as if on fine threads from the surface and Eagle Rays cruised the wall closely followed by a Grey Reef Shark. A Giant Black Mory Eel baring its jaws menacingly. I took a wide sweep to avoid an over-sized Titan Trigger Fish, which has been known to deliver a
generous bite if feeling territorial and to discover a shy Lion Fish hiding in his cave. It was a joy to watch a turtle foraging for a morsel he was so determined to retrieve he used his front flippers to dig and his beak to bite at the coral fringe. Eventually he surfaced for three big gulps of air and then remained motionless eyeballing me, seemingly as intrigued by me, as I him. The coastline is dotted with hundreds of cayes offering superb watersports, fishing and diving or simply a jolly good flop on a beautiful sandy beach to soak up some wonderful rays. Guatemala and Belize are unique, striking and a complete revelation and I urge you to visit soon! Somewhere for the Weekend? Our very own Cotswoldia couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our travel section. They thoroughly investigate destinations ideal for a little trip away revealing vital tips on a glamorous getaway and also provide the inside track to ensure the destination caters for a range of tastes and wallets. From the slickest city hangouts to peaceful boltholes, you won’t waste a moment planning your travels. This month we devour MADRID Having found themselves with a rare free weekend, Mr Jones began the difficult task of deciding where to go. He likes sun, chilling and cold beer whereas we already know Mrs Jones enjoys good food and wine, culture, a little history and art thrown in and of course shopping and people watching in stylish cafés. They both agreed it should be somewhere they hadn’t been before and though Mr Jones had been to Spain many times on business, strangely never to Madrid and his Spanish is quite impressive. With military precision Mr Jones produced a full schedule, which Mrs Jones was very impressed with - realising she must learn to trust his judgment more! The capital city of Spain is steeped in history and has a population of around 3.5m. It is considered to be one of the world’s major global cities with strong influences on politics, education, entertainment, environment, media, fashion, science, culture and the arts. It is also the home of two world-famous football clubs, Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid, who happened to be playing each other the weekend they were there. Every bar, restaurant and café had at least one television set showing the match such is their passion. The city is divided up into 21 districts, each with its own vibe, festivals, sculptures (many everywhere), squares, churches, plenty of greenery and of course bars and restaurants. 46 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
Getting There Getting to Madrid is especially easy from the Cotswolds. Mr Jones was flying in from Manchester after a business trip in the north and the couple was to meet at the airport within half an hour of each other. Except that Mrs Jones’ flight was delayed 5 frustrating hours and she watched in horror as Bristol Airport closed for the night. On her eventual arrival, Mr Jones had eaten, sampled the beer, taken a stroll then crashed out. Getting to Madrid’s city centre is simple by grabbing the metro, bus, train or a taxi. The quickest way is to hop on metro line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios in Madrid's city centre taking 15 minutes. Car hire really isn’t essential unless you are planning to head out of the city for a few days, even then, there are lots of organised bus trips out to tourist destinations. As it was late, Mrs Jones shared a taxi into the city with a fellow delayed traveller at a cost of just 30 euros.
Getting Around Madrid’s metro system is quick, efficient and easy to use just don’t leave the hotel without your map. Alternatively the bus system works well and taxis are surprisingly good value. Mr Jones was visibly shocked when one taxi driver was glued to the football match on a screen at the front of the cab whilst driving

them to their restaurant. He cheered with both hands every time his team scored!
Things To Do Mrs Jones fell in love with Madrid from the moment she woke up and looked out over the skyline. Despite feeling a little groggy after the bottle of Cava she insisted on drinking from the hotel room fridge when she finally arrived in the early hours, they both headed out for the ‘Devour Madrid’ tour. This was with an award winning tour company that promises you ‘a true taste of Spain’. Set

up by three friends who all share the same belief that great food doesn’t just happen, the 3 ½ hour ‘Huertas Neighbourhood Food and Market Tour’ took them on an off-the-beaten-path foodie exploration of one Madrid’s most picturesque neighbourhoods. A lovely Danish girl, Mette, was their guide and has adopted Madrid as her city – the Jones’ thought she was incredible. They felt like they were with a best friend who knows all the top places to eat and drink in town and met some of the proud people behind the food, discovered tucked-away eateries and shared unforgettable experiences and lots of laughter. Even if you don’t consider yourself a foodie one of these tours is highly recommended. Mrs & Mr Jones started by eating porro and chocolate at Chocolat in Calle de Santa Maria, 30 which certainly got rid of the hangover, followed by jams, honeys, oils, freshly made potato crisps and cheeses before heading to Mercado de Anton Martin in Calle Santa Isabel, 5 for some olives, porchetta and jamon. Their next destination was Los Gatos in Calle de Jesus, 2, which if you are in the area you must pay a visit to. Here they ate tostas and drank sweet red Miro vermouth on tap. Before finishing at Pan de Pi in Plaza de Jesus, 5 a stylish bakery where they tried their Baked tetilla cake. This reminded Mrs Jones of her mother’s curd cheese cake she ate as a child. stopping at leisure for a small beer or glass of rose to take in the beautiful sights.
What To See The Royal Palace This is Madrid’s largest building and truly worth a visit even if you just admire its stunning external architecture. The Palace is the official residence of the Spanish Royal family but is only used for state ceremonies. After a look around the grounds and across at the breathtaking views, Mrs & Mr Jones went inside to view the opulent staterooms. There are reasonably priced guided tours but they opted to do their own thing, as Mr Jones was sure he wouldn’t last the lengthy official tour without needing a cold beer. Gran Via A walk down this impressive central street is essential. It not only houses some of the best shops in the city but is also known as the street which never sleeps as some of the best restaurants, bars and clubs are here. Mr Jones kept his wife on a tight leash and suddenly became very attentive as they approached certain shops, gently guiding her away. She made a note to herself to return soon with friends.
Sofia Reina Be prepared to queue here, although the wait was made easier by Mr Jones’ suggestion that they take turns whilst the other wandered off for a coffee or beer an ingenious plan! But they couldn’t visit Madrid without visiting this ex hospital which was remodeled and converted to a museum in 1992, now housing Spain’s

20th century art, the most famous of which is Picasso’s Guernica. Seeing this piece of art close up is breathtaking and Mrs Jones even caught a tear in Mr Jones’ eye - or at least she assumed that’s why his eyes were a little red. Besides Guernica, other highlights were Woman in Blue also by Picasso and works by Miro, Dali and Francis Bacon. Prado Museum Renowned as the world’s largest art gallery, the Prado Museum was opened in 1819 and contains over 9,000 works of art. The museum was rather overwhelming as there really is so much to see. The recommendation is you decide what you want to see before you go in and stick to that. Spotlight on... Platea, Calle Goya This old movie theatre is now a gourmet food market over 6000sqm with over 700 covers. As Mrs & Mr Jones approached they first walked through an open market with takeout food and ingredients that looked more like a work of art, before entering into the main arena.

They were drooling as they saw the perimeter of the vast market lined with food stalls selling every variety of tapas you could desire, along with wines, sherries, beers and vermouth. They feasted for several hours before walking back to the hotel to work it off. The atmosphere there was electric and full of travellers from around the world as well as locals. They only wish they could have packed it up and brought it home.
Madrid’s skyline One of the highlights of the trip for Mrs & Mr Jones was seeing Madrid’s skyline especially with some quite dramatic skies, as the weather was surprisingly a little unpredictable. Many of the major 48 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
One can sit at one of the stylish bars or go to a food station choosing from traditional Spanish dishes but also Mexican, Italian, Peruvian and Japanese food. The restaurant on the first floor, ‘Arriba’, and the cocktail bar, ‘El Palco’ on the second floor, have the best views of the place as the tables are arranged towards the centre stage. The main level, where the centre stage is located, is like a giant delicatessen supermarket, where gourmet products are available on different food stands. You can even choose from the menu of 2 Michelin Star restaurant ‘Arriba’ or simpler, typical Spanish tapas at one of the food stands. The bar at the very top is stunning although not for the fainthearted as it is very big. The cocktail manager kindly made some of his signature ‘liquid dessert’ cocktails

Plaza Mayor The Jones’ last couple of hours was spent in this impressive square, rather touristy and pricey but irresistible. Once they had found a café with some sun and shade they shared a delicious Paella and beer, watched the entertainment and reflected on what had been a very successful trip.
The Dear Hotel has a great location and even greater rooftop terrace view with dipping pool. The room was clean, good sized and had a stylish bathroom. However, do not expect good service or helpful staff. It was a great base for the trip and reasonably priced through Booking.com at £140 per night bed and breakfast.

Hit bar-lined Calle Cava Baja for classy tapas and wine at Casa Lucas, 30 and the inexpensive Basque Pinchos at Lamiak, 42. Sanlucar is lovely for southern Spanish cuisine in Calle San Isidro Labrador, 14. StreetXO (a favourite) offers street food takes on the cuisine of Michelin-starred restaurant DiverXO in Caller Serrano 52. For a simple and well priced proper sit down meal try El Cogollo in Calle Lechuga, 3 or Vinoteca Moratin is great modern Spanish food but reservations are essential, Calle de Moratin, 36. There are so many great bars but the Jones’ liked Del Diego cocktails
May and September are an ideal climate for wandering around the city. Temperatures rise dramatically from June reaching 32 degrees in July and August.

Heavenly Holiday Hair Chlorine is often added to the water in swimming pools. Short, occasional exposure to chlorinated water really won’t damage your hair, though it may make it feel dry for a day or so. If you are planning a holiday this summer and plan to swim most days, chlorine can cause significant damage to your hair. Our scalps naturally produce oil to protect hair from damage and daily wear. Swimming in a pool on a regular basis can cause over drying, increased porosity and in some
cases significant damage if you don’t take steps to prevent and treat your hair for chlorine exposure. I’m frequently asked ‘will chlorine turn my hair green?’ While it’s true that chlorine is a greenish yellow colour, chlorine does not turn your hair green. Dry, porous hair (especially hair that has been chemically lightened or highlighted), is more likely to be damaged by chlorine exposure and absorb chemicals which causes discolouration.

You can do a few things immediately before and after your swim to prevent chlorine from damaging your hair... Before you enter the pool, rinse your hair with clean water. Have you ever noticed that a sponge will only absorb so much water and once it’s full the water just runs off? Your hair is the same. If you saturate your hair with clean water before you swim, your hair will be less likely to absorb as much of the chlorinated water in the pool.

Use a Swim Cap. If you’re doing a lot of swimming or are concerned about damage, a swim cap can make a world of difference. Before putting your cap on, saturate your hair with clean water and apply a light conditioner. You may not look very cool but your hair will benefit afterwards.

This season is all about emphasising and showing off the natural colour of your eyes. Think blue eyes livened up with a dash of bright pink or some electric blue liner, brown eyes glimmering with a bronze or golden shade. It’s all about the skin this year, a barely there look for a supremely natural effect. Lip stains have been a big thing for a few seasons now, with most of the major brands sporting a range or two of various shades and degrees of colour, these clever little products often combine a colour stain that stays true on the lips for hours with accompanying ingredients that help to condition and moisturise the lips. How to keep your child’s brain active over the summer holidays Dr Carolyn Shelley, Head of Dean Close Pre-Prep School shares her tips for an engaging summer How exciting the summer holidays have started, you have been looking forward to some family time and a wonderful break. But how do you ensure that your children not only keep active but also keep their brains in gear over the long holiday? There are, of course, many holiday clubs which offer a variety of activities in addition to sports and swimming – but what about those other days? As a parent of three children myself, I know that it is worth planning and having activities up your sleeves – especially if our British weather isn’t quite up to scratch. I am always amazed at children’s innate curiosity and capacity to learn and so engaging children and giving them exciting experiences will really reap rewards. And, it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Here are my top tips to ensure you all have a wonderful holiday.

What is your child interested and fascinated by? The summer is a brilliant time to enable them to explore their passions and embark on a project – it could be related to Science, History or Nature, for example looking for minibeasts and finding out about their habitats and life-cycles. A project can involve going to the library to find information books, looking for information on the Internet, painting, writing facts – or even creating a PowerPoint (something that children are very adept at). This will create an impressive piece of work to take into school at the beginning of September, which will wow staff and classmates alike. You could help your child compile a holiday diary, the important thing to remember here is to ensure it remains a ‘fun’ activity. You don’t need to record every single day; choose the days when something different has happened, or when they have been excited (for example taken a bus, bought a new toy, visited a member of the family, gone to a friend’s house or even visited a special

Get outside! Hopefully we will have a glorious summer which will be perfect for exploring our wonderful natural world and spending more time outside. In my experience, children love being able to go for a walk in a new area, fly a kite, look for different types of flowers, go rock-pooling, build a den in a forest (or your garden), even a walk to a local park can be a great way to get your child out and about. To make the experience a little different, make a picnic together, arrange to meet up with friends, or create a ‘natural’ treasure hunt (finding a certain type of flower, sticks, leaves and feathers).

Pose challenges. Children love new challenges; this can be anything to fit in with your child or your plans, for example, can you ride your bike without stabilisers? Read 10 books and write/draw a review of each one? Learn your times tables, learn to bake a cake or make a meal. They will feel a huge sense of achievement, it can even be a set of challenges for the whole holiday with a particular prize at the end.
Visits – if you are able to, plan some visits to exciting places or attractions over the holidays. There are many amazing free activities available (for example libraries often have exciting free book related activities over the summer) in addition to the many wonderful museums and landmarks that we have in this country. These often stimulate lots of further interest and research and could be the basis for a project… and can be a high point for the holiday experience.

Have craft days – especially good when the weather is not kind. You do not need to have lots of expensive craft kits – use items at home for example, making junk models which can keep children planning and busy for ages before even getting to the painting stage.

WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS It’s been a busy few weeks in Parliament. Emma Logan has asked the county’s MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers their thoughts on our new Prime Minister

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD I would like to thank all those who have sent me words of appreciation for my campaigning to remain in the European Union. I have been touched by them all, especially as so many came from members of other parties than my own and from people with no known political affiliation. I am also very grateful to the over 40,000 people locally who voted to remain in the EU – this meant that in the Stroud Valleys and the Vale we bucked the trend with an almost 55-45 split in favour of remaining. The fact is that despite this local performance, the nation as a whole rejected continued membership of the EU. This is a populist expression of opinion which cannot be ignored, least of all by parliament - indeed, the referendum is, essentially, an instruction to parliament to disengage from the EU. Recognising the finality of this decision is important. Partly this is because the longer we linger on, the more damaging to us the terms for our departure could be. The electoral mandate our new Prime Minister has to negotiate our departure is, presently, strong but, as the consequences of leaving become clearer, this advantage will evaporate. Ultimately, we must be sure to leave on reasonably friendly terms as we will be, despite everything, neighbours with the EU. For the future, we must leave a route 68 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
map in place to reengage with the EU and more immediately, we must, through parliamentary oversight, make sure the negotiations to leave achieve the best deal possible for the UK. In years to come another generation may well want to pick up the pieces left behind from the 45 years of membership (1973-2018) so no bridges should be burnt. After what seems a lifetime of political events this summer, we now have the stability of a new Prime Minister and Government in Whitehall. I am sure you will wish to join me in congratulating Theresa May and wishing her every success in the challenging political times ahead. No-one could have predicted the events leading to Boris Johnson standing down from the Conservative Leadership campaign because of the actions of Michael Gove, who then himself was voted out. Andrea Leadsom unexpectedly dropped out and so the Rt Hon Theresa May MP, was crowned as Prime Minister and then appointed Boris as Foreign Secretary. All concluded in just three weeks - you could not have written the script! So how does all this leave the country? I believe we now have a

competent Prime Minister and sensible Government. Three Brexiteers, Boris Johnson, David Davis and Liam Fox have now the most important outward facing positions in Government and I am confident that they will not only deliver a satisfactory agreement to leave the EU but will also capitalise on the many opportunities that this country will have with the rest of the world. At the same time we will be able to control our immigration system so that it suits the conditions prevailing in this country. Where do we go from here? Some have suggested that the Prime Minister could call an early general election to try to secure her own mandate and a bigger majority in the House of Commons. There are two problems with this. First, Theresa May has said that she will not do so. Secondly, we now have the Fixed Parliament Act (2011) passed by the previous coalition government. The only way our Parliament can be dissolved in less than five years requires that a simple majority of MPs vote for it (unlikely when many Labour MPs would lose their seats); or that 66 per cent of

Style Politics MPs vote for a motion of no confidence in the Government. To be successful some Conservative MPs would have to vote against their Government, which might not be welcomed by their electorate. So it is most likely that this Government will remain until 2020. I would expect that by then we will have left the EU and the nation will then be able to judge the Government’s competence in doing so. ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM Britain has a new Prime Minister. I’m absolutely delighted it is Theresa May. In the short time I have been in Parliament she has shown the steel required of a real leader. She gets on with the job, coolly and without fuss. It’s something I saw for myself when I worked with her on the Investigatory Powers Bill – so vital for our security services here in Cheltenham.
As well as steady leadership and calm professionalism I think she will also bring unity. She was cheered to the rafters at a meeting of MPs, and there was a palpable sense of the nation’s blood pressure dialling down a notch. In my view it was greatly in the national interest that a further nine weeks of uncertainty were avoided. There’s a lot for her now to focus on. She needs first of all to send out a clear message that Britain is an outward, tolerant, global-facing nation that values cultural ties with other countries. In that spirit I believe it’s vital that EU nationals who live here and contribute so much to our society are given the earliest possible reassurance as to their status in our country. They are welcome and valued. We now need to face the coming years with positivity. Here in Cheltenham we can have a great future. As I’ve said so many times, cyber has got to be a key part of our next decade. I set out a tech vision for Cheltenham back in 2013. Three years on and that vision is becoming a reality, with exciting developments coming later this year that will help bring jobs and opportunity. Now we need to redouble our efforts, and I will be leading the charge in Parliament for more cyber investment in our town. We need to get on too with the simple but important measures like delivering cheaper parking. We can’t afford backsliding on the Council’s pledge to end parking charges after 6pm in off-street car parks. Let’s welcome people, not scare them away. On NHS matters, I recently visited the superb oncology facilities at Cheltenham General, and took part in a Healthwatch Gloucestershire meeting, raising the issue
of devolution to Gloucestershire; I want to see us take this opportunity to use local control to better match spending priorities with local health needs. The time has come to deliver the brightest possible future for our great country. www.alexchalk.com

LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY July is always a ‘fun’ time in Parliament, seemingly to challenge for the official title of silly season, but nothing could have given us notice of just how dramatic this July would be! A leadership election in the Conservative Party (to be followed by one in the Labour Party), with a couple of late withdrawals from contenders, took us all by surprise and we had a quicker transfer of power than we expected. I’m very pleased to welcome Theresa May as our Prime Minister and look forward to working with her and supporting her in that role. Many people voted for Brexit and many didn’t. But Theresa – I should now call her the Prime Minister - has said that Brexit means Brexit and she intends to make it work. We need to respect the views and concerns of those who don’t want the UK to leave the EU, while exploring and exploiting the very many opportunities, which will now come our way. Personally, I will be having a few days away from the fray in August, in Cornwall and York and a couple of rounds of golf locally but will be keeping in close touch with issues locally and nationally, before we engage full throttle again in Parliament in September. I hope to bump into as many constituents as possible during this time. SUZANNAH HARVEY Businesswoman, CEO of Cotswold Airport and member player of Cirencester Park Polo Club uzannah Harvey is CEO and Group MD of Cotswold Airport, a busy and dynamic private airport based on the old site of RAF Kemble and previous home to the Red Arrows. Cotswold Airport is owned by Suzannah’s father, Ronan Harvey, who bought the 400 acre site from the MOD 15 years ago in 2001. Under Ronan’s ownership and Suzannah’s leadership, the airport has enjoyed an exciting growth year on year in both aviation and nonaviation based activities. Primarily the airport is busy operationally seven days a week with an exciting variety of aircraft, from exclusive private jets and helicopters, to 747’s and spitfires flying, landing and taking off. An accomplished horsewoman, having ridden all of her life, Suzannah recently took up polo, training at Cirencester Polo Academy, based at Cirencester Park Polo Club. Despite major reconstructive knee surgery following a skiing accident, her determination and passion for the sport saw her playing last month in the famous International Ladies Polo Tournament. Other sporting interests include hunting, shooting and fishing in the glorious Cotswolds countryside. Suzannah began her business career back in 2003 founding Universal Model Management Ltd, a hugely successful model and promotions agency with over 1000 personalities represented worldwide. Then in 2007 she began organising the corporate entertainment at Cotswold Airport and in 2008 took a full time post as a Director looking after marketing, events and business development. Under her leadership the airport’s nonaviation business has been significantly developed, increasing the number of companies that lease and rent buildings and hangars and building the events facilities. EXPLA N THE MARKET The Fiscal Cost of The Olympics Guy Shone predicts a happy economic outlook for British business With summer now upon us most of us are looking forward to cheering on Team GB at the Rio Olympics. Meanwhile, City analysts will be willing on the markets as much as the athletes in the hope of a positive impact on the global economy. Olympics are very, very expensive things to host and Brazilian officials have been struggling with spiralling costs just as the country sinks into its second year of recession. The total cost of Brazil’s games at $4.6bn may appear modest compared with the outlay of some previous hosts, such as London and Barcelona. But organisers in Rio are also facing a local financial crisis so severe it warned last month of a potentially disastrous security situation during the games, forcing the equally cash-strapped federal government to stump up more funds. Olympic sponsorship has always been a superb tool for generating economic value but in the past almost all of the benefit has been gifted to the bosses of very large corporate beasts. This year the Rio 2016 committee has decided to do things differently and share the financial opportunity with many more smaller businesses. For years, companies were banned from advertising around the Olympics unless they were official sponsors. (Becoming a sponsor can cost upwards of $25 million, sources told Reuters.) Now, a new rule called “Rule 40” allows unofficial sponsors to endorse Olympic athletes, and run ad campaigns during the games. Smaller companies from all over the world have been able to capitalise on what's been referred to as a 'refreshing democratisation'. Perhaps this will boost the chances of the games being a financial success as well as a cultural one. But what about the impact of the Olympics specifically on the UK economy? Economists are estimating a boost to UK plc of many billions of pounds. 72 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
However, many of these calculations were also based on a successful Euro 2016 campaign for the England football team...not just Wales! It is very hard to give a precise figure but food, drink, retail and betting businesses are all certainly expected to benefit from a surge in consumer spending this summer. At least £3bn is forecast pumped back into pubs, supermarkets and sports shops as fans get together to show their support. England's woeful exit from Euro 2016 undoubtedly means less spending than expected on related merchandise and entertainment but when the dust settles and the economists evaluate the summer the numbers will still be significant. Looking back to the 2014 World Cup, where England went out at the group stage the contribution to the UK economy in consumer spending was still well over £2.5bn. There is also every chance that recent events will spur the public on to embrace the Olympic spirit and get behind all things Team GB. UK based financiers have raised concerns recently about the time-zone difference between Brazil and the UK meaning many of the biggest events will be broadcast late at night to relatively small TV audiences. However, I'm not so pessimistic. It just means that we will watch in a slightly different way. There is no guarantee that less economic value will be created as a result. The managing partner from city firm Begbies Traynor told City A.M recently “It’s all the way out in Brazil so it’s obviously not got the same allure of 2012 in London. But the events are much more spread out throughout the day and lend themselves a lot better to families watching at home in the evening.”

A Brazilian Night In Cotswold Style’s Food Writer Rachel Cappuccini, puts the heat up for Rio s a sport mad family we are all very excited about Rio 2016 and looking forward to cheering on our incredible athletes even if it is just at the television set. So, if like us, you are not fortunate enough to be there, why not create an Olympic lunch or supper party at home for family and friends. Decorate the house with patriotic bunting and flags and prepare some Brazilian food to eat outside, around the table, or indeed casually street-food style. You could even go a step further and play beach type sports in the garden like futvolley or rounders. Fancy dress? Why not … halter necks, Ipanema jewellery, longish shorts, linen shirts and bright colours. I have yet to visit this incredible country but it is certainly on my ever-growing shortlist. Drinking ice cold beer, so cold, the ice sticks to the inside of the bottle and eating some of their famous street food such as little fried pastries filled with meat or cheese bread balls whilst watching carnivals, beach life and dancing with bright colours, enticing smells and sunny smiles all around, sounds wonderful. Brazilian food is as colourful and exuberant as the clothes they wear and mostly quite easy to prepare. It is a wonderful mix of Portuguese, African and native foods including some from the Amazon. Staples such as corn meal, sweet potatoes and preserved meats or fish all feature. They also have a particular love of sweets and although there is an abundance of tropical fruit, Brazilians will traditionally eat prepared custard based sweets with coconut, palm oil and lots of sugar, sometimes flavoured with pineapple or mango. Memories of the egg custards my mother used to make but far sweeter. The national dish, feijoada, is believed to have been created by African slaves

using dried beans, kale and cassava (a root vegetable used to produce flour and tapioca) along with the cut offs of either pork or beef. A very nutritious and economical dish indeed. The influence of the gauchos or cowboys in the south means barbecue (churrasco) meat dishes feature heavily including picanha, a part of the beef rump which is rolled in rock salt and garlic and cooked rotisserie style over charcoal. Mouth wateringly delicious! I have featured my version of Moqueca (pronounced moo-kek-a) essentially a lightly spiced fish stew. You can vary the fish according to your likes but I have used prawns and salt cod (if you can’t get hold of salt cod, cod fillet works just as well). It is delicious served with sweet potato mash or barbecued sweet potato rings, rice and crisp green salads, perhaps with some stir fried okra too. You can have the barbecue going and throw on some seasoned steaks and pork ribs. Vegetarians might love some barbecued sweet potato with crumbled cheese and pistachio nuts. For pudding try making Developing innovative menus, forging links with local companies and working as a private chef means that Rachel is still very much hands-on. Rachel’s consistent love affair with food means the next meal is never far from her mind; day-today nutrition and nutrition in sport are of particular interest as well as bigger issues such as school meals, food wastage and animal welfare. Her obsession with food developed in early
this very easy baked custard known as Coconut Quindim. Of course, the event wouldn’t be complete without some cold beers and some Caipirinha cocktails. With or without the sunshine, we Brits can still enjoy a party so give these recipes a try and if you want to get the children involved get them to help with the pud as they will love cracking all those eggs (make sure you keep the whites to whisk up some meringues in the next day or two) and ask them to make some simple chocolate truffles, known in Brazil as Brigadeiros which go perfectly with the Quindim. Moqueca (fish stew) Ingredients - Serves 6
400g large raw peeled prawns 200g salt cod or cod fillet, cut into large cubes 100ml lime juice 4 garlic cloves, chopped finely 4 tbsp coconut oil 1 bunch spring onions, chopped 1 large white onion, sliced into half moons
Coconut Quindim Ingredients - Makes 8
3 tsp soft butter 18 egg yolks 200g sugar, plus little extra for coating 600ml coconut milk 100g dessicated coconut 2 tsp vanilla extract
2 red peppers, thinly sliced 4-6 red chillis depending on your taste, finely chopped 3 tsp paprika 6 plum tomatoes, deseeded and chopped 500 ml coconut milk 4 tbsp coriander leaves
Method:
1. Marinade the prawns in a bowl for an hour or so with 50ml of lime juice, salt and pepper and 1 tbsp of the chopped garlic.
2. Heat the coconut oil in a large saucepan, add the onions and fry gently for 5 mins, add red pepper, chillis, paprika and the rest of garlic. Cook a further 5 mins before adding the tomatoes and coconut milk. 3. Bring to a gentle simmer and reduce for 10 mins. Add prawns and cod, the marinade and the rest of the lime juice. Simmer until fish is cooked through, approx. 5 mins. Serve to table topped with coriander leaves. Serve with rice and sweet potatoes.
Method:
Heat oven to 180/160°C fan/gas 4. Rub 8 ramekin or dariole moulds with the butter and sprinkle with caster sugar. In a bowl, press the egg yolks through a wire sieve and mix with the coconut milk, sugar and vanilla. Pour in the ramekins and place in a roasting tin in the oven. Pour water into the roasting tin so it covers ž height of ramekins. Bake for 30-35 mins until tops golden and take out and leave to cool. Chill in fridge for 4 hours then run a knife
around the edges of moulds and turn out. Delicious with tropical fruit and chocolate truffles.

R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Kelly Rogers reviews the Tewkesbury Park Hotel My husband and I both grew up on the banks of the Severn so when the opportunity to experience Tewkesbury Park’s facilities came up, I was excited to spend the weekend on familiar turf. However, I then recalled the hotel from my early childhood and summoned up chilling flashbacks of Stanley Cubrick’s ‘The Shining’, complete with shaggy carpets and the sort of creepy corridors that are simply crying out for the squeaky wheels of a lone tricycle. The hotel, as I remembered, was a beacon of 1970’s opulence. However given my experiences occurred somewhere in the mid 90’s its once glamorous décor left a slightly different impression at the time. Imagine my surprise when we arrived at the ‘all-new’ Tewkesbury Park. The hotel reception is certainly impressive. Yet it welcomes it guests with warm arms and immediately transports you into that wonderful ‘I’m in a nice hotel, pass me a gin, my fluffy robe and slippers’ frame of mind. Once checked in we were led up the regency staircase to the Lord Hasting suite. Not really sure what to expect we were a bit shocked (good shock) at the sight. We both tried to maintain the ‘yes, we stay in these sorts of places all the time’ face, impassively shrugging off the huge platter of fruit, palatial sized room and view, with a faux yawn and bored wave of the hand. However I am pretty sure the entire hotel heard our yelps of excitement as we immediately bounced on the mile wide bed and popped our complimentary bottle of pop. A courtesy
phone call checked we were satisfied with our room, super king bed and enormous slipper bath. Yes, we were happy. Lord Hasting was a very generous man. Surely all the other suites could not be as lovely I hear you say? Guess again. Each of the 9 suites available carries its own identity but still incorporates traditional luxury. A particular favourite with guests is the Margaret of Anjou suite, which houses a beautiful copper slipper bath a few steps from the bed. Perfect for wedding parties and a luxury weekend away. The hotel also offers 85 other guestrooms. Having nosed around the 9 boutique suites I was a bit reluctant to look at their ‘standard’ room. These can often be disappointingly bland, corporate’y’ and give off a depressing aroma of ‘team building workshops’. Shudder. Cautiously stepping into the first room I expected a Patridge-like individual, trapped in brown and beige hell. But I was wrong. Not only would it be weird to be shown a room with someone actually in it, the rooms were in fact delightfully homely and perfectly kitted out. Each room has been decorated with comfort in mind. Woollen throws hug the huge Hypnos beds, leather ergo chairs beckon weary backs and gentle lighting sets the tone for a very comfortable stay. From 99 GBP, I would be a very happy customer with a stay in either the ‘Just Right’ or ‘Touch of Class’ room. Even if you don’t care much for interiors you
cannot fail to be impressed by the scenery outside your window. No risk of booking the car park or wheelie bin view with this place. Tewkesbury Park is also home to a very cosy cocktail bar and terrace. Take a seat in one of its velvet chairs and sip on a mean Bellini. Then go onto the lawn and pretend you understand the rules of croquet and later perhaps make use of the Spa rooms’ amazing treatment menu (note: the coconut facemask is not edible. It does not taste as it smells.) As with any project some parts of the hotel are still unfinished. The restaurant is still pretty much as it was. At first it is a tiny bit like entering the twilight zone… a single line in the carpet marks the boundary between present day and a 1970’s social club. But this area is soon to be considered and is largely only used for breakfast, which is delicious! The next chapter for the hotel is a beautiful all-glass conference centre. Perfect for nuptials and the hotel’s valued corporate customer. Expect big things from Tewkesbury Park. The owners have put a great deal of time, consideration and love into its refurbishment so far. We had a wonderful weekend away made all the more special by the lovely team who work there. It is well worth a visit. Summertime Dangers Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park 1. Hot Cars
Never leave your pet in the car in the warmer months, not even for a short periods. Many people believe it is still ok to leave their dogs in the car if the windows are open and the car is parked in the shade, but the truth is it is still very dangerous. As well as cars, conservatories and caravans can become as hot as an oven on hot sunny days. If you see a dog in a hot car and you are concerned then please call 999 immediately.
2. Heat Stroke
The sun is shining and it seems like a perfect day to take your dog out for a long walk. However excessive exercise on a hot day can prove fatal. Signs of heatstroke include panting, drooling lethargy, drowsiness, uncoordination collapse and vomiting. If you dog shows any of the signs they must be put in a cool shaded place immediately, douse the dog in cool, not cold, water and place in the breeze of a fan. Once the dog has cooled down, he should be taken to a vet immediately 82 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
3. Adders
The Adder is the UKs only venomous snake, they emerge from hibernation in spring and on hot days, and they like to bask in the sunshine. Unfortunately dogs, being naturally curious will unintentionally provoke Adders, resulting in bites usually to the face or front legs. If you suspect that your dog had been bitten remain calm, it is important to reduce movement, so either walk or carry your dog to the car and then get to the nearest vet immediately.
4. Fly strike
Fly strike can affect any animal, but rabbits seem to be very susceptible. The condition is caused, when flies, attracted by the smell of urine, faeces or blood lay their eggs on the animal. As the eggs hatch into maggots, they will feed on the flesh causing catastrophic, painful injuries. To avoid this distressing condition it is important that you keep your rabbitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hutch scrupulously clean. Check your rabbit twice a day, paying particular attention to his bottom-, which must be clean and dry. Keep your rabbit at a healthy weight so it can groom itself.
Apply a special preparation called rear guard, which help to protect him against fly-strike.
5. Skin Cancer
Light and white coloured cats are very susceptible to the suns UV rays and can develop squamous cell carcinomas. To avoid this apply sunscreen to the tips of ears and nose, avoid letting your cat out during the midday sun and if they like to sit in the window place shade over the windows. Gear up for the Olympics like your favourite athletes Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert, Luciano Kydd As we gear up this month to soak up the Rio Olympics action, while supporting our favourite athletes and home countries with live action from the comfort of our living room, why not use some of your free time to not only to watch the Olympians but to train and adopt methods like one. Here are a few tips to think about and start to implement in your own training and lifestyle right away. Get yourself a coach or PT - All the best athletes in the world have coaches in order to keep them motivated and accountable for guidance and planning for the foreseeable future, so I’ll always recommend seeking out someone like myself, to help you on your path to being an everyday athlete - like we all really are!

Sleep - Sleep is an absolutely important ingredient in all top levels athletes and it should be part of yours as well. The top levels athletes try to get between 7-10hrs shut-eye each night, as sleep help to optimise and regulate their hormones that helps with things such as recovery and repair from their daily workout and lifestyles. You too should seek to get a minimum of at least 7hrs every evening.

Nutrition and Hydration - For athletes to perform at their uttermost best they need to be fluid right from the start. By being consistent with their nutrition on a daily basis, that means eating a balanced meal consisting of lean protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats, broken down in equal ratio to not only sustain their training but to keep them functioning optimally and healthy on a day to day basis. With regards to staying hydrated most try to consume at least half their bodyweight in fluid ounces of pure water and depending on the exercise duration and intensity, some may even consume a sport drink containing electrolytes. For you: try to keep each meal balance with a ratio 1/3 coming from

protein, carbs and fats, depending on your individuals goals and training, along with drinking the minimum of at least 2 litres of water on a daily basis. Mindset - Mental preparation plays a critical part in athletes’ psychologically over the years leading up to such an important event. Some of the methods these athletes use to stay and get focus is by reading motivation and inspiring books, quotes, daily rehearsal of personal mantras & affirmations and more so, seeing and believing in themselves as winners of their chosen goals when no one else does. For you the reader, I will recommend adapting a goal and striving each day to progress to achieving that goal before moving forward. For your mind-set I will adapt one of the above methods depending on your own self-belief and see how it works for you, as the once legendary Napoleon Hill once wrote, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve”.

Training Component - This where the real athletes are made by being consistent on a daily basis, staying focussed and giving it blood, sweat and tears away from prying eyes of the public. For you, a great training programme is one that incorporates different elements of strength and conditioning, flexibility, warm up/cool down and recovery away from the weights room. Tips for you to plan your own workout: Warm up with some form of dynamic

exercises for 5-10 mins to get the blood flowing around the body, promote flexibility and helping to prevent any injuries early on. The basic workout template can look something like this, depending on your goals: A-upper body pulling exercises Blower body leg exercises C-upper body pushing exercises D-lower body hip dominant exercises E-abdominal/ core exercises, using an array of rep ranges from 1-30+, different rest periods ranging from 30 seconds - up to 5 mins recovery between sets, use of tempos ie: the lifting speed of the weight being used, different training implements ranging from bodyweights, bands, chains, free weight, fixed and cable machines and much more. This way your overall body is getting a great workout, gaining overall strength and building a body worthy of representing your country in the Olympics! OLYMPIANS OF THE COTSWOLDS Nigel Aplin has discovered some of the elite athletes who will be representing our region at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio, this August and September Melissa Jayne Nicholls was born in the breath of the gods, chewed up and spat out. Mel was born in Worcester in 1977 and now lives in Cheltenham. She studied Equine Science at Hartpury College, working as a teaching assistant at Winchcombe Abbey School. She was involved in a serious car accident which left her with heart complications and from 2001 had a series of strokes, while a stroke in 2008 left Mel unable to use her left arm and leg, left sided hemiplegia, balance and co-ordination problems, unable to walk unaided and using her wheelchair. In April 2009 doctors discovered a hole in her heart for which she underwent corrective surgery. During her first year post stroke, which included heart surgery, months of hospitalised rehabilitation and having to leave her home, and what she thought, past life behind, something inside Mel was slowly being ignited. This is the fire that burns bright in her today. One poignant memory etched in her consciousness was in the summer of that year, watching the Beijing Paralympics, “I watched those athletes with great admiration, and I saw them as superhuman. Over time I took part in 86 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE
what disability sports I could, whatever was available to me in the area; I used sport as my own therapy, both physically and mentally.” Mel was, in fact, a keen horse rider since childhood. “A transition from jumping and eventing to para dressage was an obvious one for me and one that I fully embraced. Beginning the journey with my old, ever faithful thoroughbred ‘Joey’ and once competing, borrowing the fantastic ’Ollie’ before taking on my own loan dressage horse ‘Harry’, who taught me so much and gave me even more. I had always had horses and my love for them and competing was as strong as ever, taking me to competitions throughout the UK and to a number of National Championships with great success. The high spot was me and Harry being placed second at the National Winter Para Dressage Championships in 2011.” Sadly, that was the last competition she and Harry were to compete in. As the weeks and months followed, Harry developed a deteriorating lameness and Mel was now training alongside her dressage in what would become her main sport. A decision was made in the winter of 2011 to leave the horses and dressage and fully concentrate on
wheelchair racing, swapping her fourlegged friends for the three-wheeled kind, for Dolly, her ‘Dolly Mixture’ racing chair, “This was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make, but I knew for the best.” Mel began wheelchair racing at the end of 2010, after attending a UKA ‘come and try’ day the winter before. She was later spotted by her now coach Job King, whilst at a wheelchair racing conference. Job had to work hard to get her attention which took him the best part of the year. “My para dressage career was going well and horses took up all of my time and energy. Wheelchair racing consisted of me going to the track to be social, watching from afar in my jodhpurs, having come straight from the yard, but then usually ending up jumping in a chair and doing a few laps to join in.” Persistence paid off however for Job and at the start of winter that year, Mel had been classified, lent a racing chair and began her first winter training. Her first competition came in May of the following year, amazingly achieving Paralympic A Standards in both of her sprint distances. That first year, both Mel and Job travelled around the UK and abroad to gain vital competition

country and the little touches from the University that make us feel welcome, this is a great set-up.” External circumstances nearly ended the dream for Mel back in February when a driver in Tewkesbury ‘refused to wait’ at a traffic calming pinch point and sped towards her. “I skidded across the road towards the car, narrowly missing being hit head-on. I literally saw my life flash before my eyes and think there were a few choice words as I thought my numbers were up. It’s such a shame that some don't seem to have any care of anyone else's life. just so they can get through that few seconds quicker, or get in the queue that bit earlier, or in that parking space before someone else, and it's really sad.” Mel finishes by saying, “I am really proud to join the tradition of Godiva athletes representing Great Britain at Olympic and Paralympic Games.” Mel Nicholls

I never let doubt or the thought of failure come into my mind. Then again at the World Championships the following year, finishing fifth over 100m and 200m in the world, along the
way breaking the 1500m World Record earlier in the year. 2012 was just the beginning, ‘’I’ve found a real passion for wheelchair racing as it’s very similar to running which I always used to love to do so much,” Mel said. “I’ve always been an active and sporty person and even though I’m now disabled, I do not see myself as any less able.” “Having a group at the Academy really helps to push me on. Although we are mixed ages and abilities, everybody works together but also the support and friendship make the sessions a lot of fun too! I started my degree at Loughborough I thought I’d try something different. I was always told I might be quite good at rowing so I gave it a go and got selected for the GB Rowing Team Start Programme, which develops talented athletes. I made it into the senior team just after London 2012 and it’s been quite an amazing journey. I remember watching the last Olympics at our training base in Caversham, we were part of the development group aiming to be on that stage in four years’ time. Watching the guys racing in London was definitely an inspiration to us. Success drives success and everyone pushes each other on. We have a lot of incredible athletes in the team. When I first turned up for senior training, I remember putting my bag on the peg between Andy Triggs Hodge and Alex Gregory, thinking ‘am I really here?’. about going back to Rio, I absolutely loved it when we went on a training camp a couple of years ago. It’s the most amazing place, I’ve never been anywhere like it. Everyone in Rio knows about rowing and the lake is in the heart of it, it’s going to be an awesome place to race.
It will be unlike any Olympics I’ve been to – I went to Beijing and London and they were two completely contrasting atmospheres and I think it will be like that again this time.” Heather Stanning: “Having won last time in London, we have a title to defend and we’re working incredibly hard to make sure we do that. I think what’s great is we are still making progress. London wasn’t the best rowing we could ever have done; we were still new to the sport and had a lot to learn. We have become better and stronger athletes since then but we know our competition is getting better and stronger, so we have to step up every time. We hope to do that again in Rio. We are coming towards the peak of our fitness, which is exciting. I got into rowing at the University of Bath and being part of the Start Programme down there was amazing. Evans has been selected to represent Ireland at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Jonty has been a resident in the Cotswolds for 25 years. He grew up in hilly North Wales so the Cotswold Hills were something of a draw to him. Its’ central position and the abundance of equestrian facilities, the Cotswolds were the ideal location for any ambitious young event rider. Now based in Shipton Oliffe near Cheltenham he runs a highly successful event yard with his wife Jane, their family, owners and the dedicated grooms. His Olympic ride, Cooley Rorkes Drift (owned by Fiona Elliott and Ann Nobbs), is only 10 years old and has been with Jonty since he was 5 years old. He had a very successful season in 2015 and this continued into 2016 with Top
Ten placings at all of his International events. In 2015 he was part of the winning Nations Cup Team in Boekelo and was 8th individually and was also 3rd in the CIC*** 8/9 year old class at Blenheim. In 2016 they were part of the Nations Cup team in Fontainebleau with a team 3rd and 11th individually. He finished third at Tattersalls International Horse Trials CIC3* earlier this month. Looking forward to the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Jonty believes that Ireland as a team have the capability of a podium finish. Jonty’s individual aim is to improve on his personal best. Claire in the County “So what are you going to do this summer?” asks Claire Thayers decided to take an early holiday as my children have grown up and I can take advantage of cheaper flights and I had a wonderful time in Crete in June – albeit gutted that the UK had a mini heatwave. I came back, very chilled out, having overdosed on Greek salads, worn out from swimming in crystal blue seas, blurred vision from reading too much… but feeling relaxed and with a glorious tan (I have a theory, which I know is wrong but brown fat is more attractive than white! I probably won’t be saying that in my 60’s when I look like a dried prune!). Since returning it has rained non-stop – even as I sit here now at my kitchen table it continues to rain. Already I am on the Internet craving sun… the tan has now become rust… So, what do we do in this country – do we stay or do we go? I have to say there is a LOT to be said for staying in the UK and a LOT to be said for ‘staycations’ especially if you have young children. I agree we cannot

guarantee sun BUT we don’t have the stress of trying to force two weeks worth of clothes into hand luggage just because we don’t want to wait for a case the other end or indeed pay for it! We don’t have to watch our forgotten bottle of ‘Channel’ being confiscated from our bag at security, or struggle with zipping up that bag, as others tut behind you beyond at the security scanner. Or, whiling away the hours waiting for delayed flights…buying rubbish in the duty free, which isn’t even cheap JUST because we are bored… these are precious hours of our lives – gone forever. There is a lot to be said for throwing a bag on the back seat, sticking a pin in the map and jumping in the car and going to visit someone where different – often a mere hour or so away from where we live. Yes really – I have been to the hidden gem of the Vale of Glamorgan to Dunraven Bay, eaten at Michelin starred Montgomery… its not all Gavin and Stacey! Do it, even if its just for a weekend,
without the fear of screaming children on the plane, insect bites the size of tennis balls, the pain of sunburn or a ‘dicky tummy’. So yes… I have been away, I had my fill of Greek culture, loved every minute of it but I have decided to ‘holiday in the Cotswolds’ for a week, in September – my favourite time of the year. Fear not … I will still be eating (my number one pastime), I will still be reading, the tan may be out of a bottle but sitting in the gardens of some of the best pubs in the country, enjoying the views, watching the golden sun sets, sipping a Pimms and tucking into locally produced delicious food... what’s not to love, especially as my friends can share it with me. Even if it does rain, I will simply done my sou’wester and waders and in true British fashion – carry on regardless! See you at the bar... Unbelievable! Sandra Paul tackles the appalling attitude of Barclays Bank This month’s article follows a continuing beef I have about the lack of transparency, accountability and basic respect displayed by the big corporates and the establishment. The recent referendum was an opportunity for many to ‘stuff ’ the establishment in my opinion and it is good to note that Theresa May has taken this to heart. In her first speech she made it clear that “The government I lead will be driven, not by the interests of the privileged few but by yours,” pledged May. However, whilst the Government may have recognised disaffection in the electorate, big corporates have learnt to follow the regulations but still ‘stuff ’ their customers and staff – just look at the two most notorious examples this past month at Sports Direct and Sir Philip Green and the debacle at BHS. I’ve been sent a complaint about Barclays Bank by a Cotswold Style reader who wanted to share with me an unbelievable story about this big corporate and its arrogant attitude to ordinary people. Specifically, the reader tried to open a business account with Barclays but had been refused with no reason forthcoming leaving them completely perplexed. The reader had used a credit rating agency to check their credit score before making an application and it was excellent. The business itself wasn’t looking for credit or a loan but merely an account to conduct simple banking business. The reader has never been declared bankrupt, has had perfectly sound businesses previously and was looking for an explanation for the refusal, since all the obvious boxes seemed to have been ticked. The lack of transparency hinders their successful application to another bank, and in this era of supposedly helping and encouraging SMEs, it seems incredible that Barclays fosters such an unhelpful attitude. I spoke to Barclays about it, with the reader’s permission, and although I have sympathy for the spokesperson, the attitude of the corporate bank stinks.
“Barclays is committed to helping small businesses and the number of start-up accounts we open is up 4% year on year. Due to customer confidentiality, we do not discuss individual cases. “We take our regulatory responsibilities very seriously and where a business does not meet our account opening criteria, their application may be unsuccessful. These decisions are not taken lightly.” The reader has taken it further and complained formally. After an ‘investigation’, Barclays again concluded their original decision to refuse an account was the right one but again refused to explain why it was being refused. It did helpfully point out that the reader has recourse to take their complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). I went back to the bank with the paragraph below, taken from the Ombudsman’s website: “Many of the complaints we see arise through misunderstandings. They can often be resolved just by the business giving the consumer a clear explanation of what has happened and why. What may seem obvious and clear to you, as an expert, may seem confusing and worrying to a consumer. So helpful, reassuring messages in plain English are sometimes all that are needed to sort things out.” Common sense wouldn’t you think? Yet again, Barclays refused to give an explanation to me or to the reader, ignoring the advice from the FOS for a ‘clear explanation’. It really is unbelievable isn’t it? I’m not suggesting that the banks should automatically award business accounts to those who ask for them. What I am asking for is transparency,
accountability and respect. After all, it’s the entrepreneurs in the UK who continued to grow and generate economic growth over the past 8 years – and it was the big banks that brought us to our knees through their arrogance and absolute belief that they knew best. It seems they have forgotten the lessons of the past. The Conservatives introduced Charter Marks years ago, in an effort to encourage large corporates to have more respect for their customers. Then the Labour Government introduced Treating Customers Fairly – an obligatory onus on financial services companies to do exactly that. Finally, the ombudsman is there to help customers when the financial firms fail to do their duty. The financial companies pay a percentage to cover the ombudsman costs but many say that the larger corporates are not paying a proportional amount in line with their ‘sins’. I’m sure the shareholders of Barclays will not be feeling a pinch in their pocket as this particular complaint goes through weeks of investigation costing thousands of pounds in terms of both the bank’s and the FOS’ staff/time. On a completely different note, I wanted to say how wonderful our region is at this time of year for entertainment. Including the Cheltenham festivals, I’ve enjoyed lots of cider at Wychwood festival where I saw amazing sights both on and off the various stages (tie dye never goes out of fashion at these events); I rubbed shoulders with Ice Road Truckers at Truckfest in Malvern; and I ate like a pig at the Gloucester Quays food festival. Best of all was the Morris Dancing and Sword Dancing that took place at my local, The Royal Oak in Andoversford. My friend from Southend, a very Essex blonde, was so impressed she is thinking of relocating. Britain’s biggest-selling weekly car magazine puts the Polo, Volkswagen’s second-best seller in the UK behind the Golf, top of the supermini stack for the second year running. Sharing a Family Passion Whatever your involvement in sport, it’s hard to escape it this month. Now is a great time to immerse yourself – whatever the discipline. Indulge, if you’re a sports fan - and maybe try to catch a bit of the excitement even if you’re not. Admittedly, having the last Olympics on home soil makes this one feels considerably distant... (well it is rather) but thank goodness for HDTV. In our family, we like doing sport as well as watching it and almost every weekend is taken up with some sort of competition. I know I’m not the only parent who spends rather large chunks of time, pitch, ring or trackside. Football, Rugby, Cricket, Swimming, Tennis, Running... (ugh, makes me feel a bit tired). My daughter Libbi, who turns 11 this month is into Show Jumping – and you may be surprised to know that there is in fact an incredible scene in Gloucestershire (and the UK) for Junior Show Jumping: Watch some Olympic Jumping on the telly and imagine it; scaled down a bit but just as fierce... and just as flash. It’s possibly not quite as expensive but doesn’t feel too far off. Gulp. These kids are highly competitive, extraordinary riders and some of them are quite possibly the Olympians of the future. They have all the latest gear, including glittery riding hats and diamante bridles, ponies imported from Holland and trainers who also work with international professionals. I have swayed between feeling almost sick at how much money – and pressure – some parents throw at their riding offspring... and being mightily impressed at the level of dedication to sport – and looking after a large animal – that’s offered up from a 9 year old. We got Libbi’s pony, ‘Maybe’ (pictured with her aboard) from a fellow Show Jumping horsey family. Yes, she was imported originally. And, yes she has crystals on her tack. But my daughter keeps it clean and mucks out her stable every day. She’s even phoned the farrier 98 AUGUST 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

She’s only 10, so I guess her level of responsibility, which goes a very long way towards making me feel better about the time and money we spend on her hobby, impresses me. Luckily there also appears to be a much more reasonable market for kids (and adults) riding equipment now than there was when I was little. Mostly thanks to New Hunt Horses in Newent Lane, near Huntley. Everything you see in the picture, other than the child / animal, came from this shop! Things are an eighth of the price they used to be and just as good or better. I also have a lot to thank the Pony Club for. You cannot substitute the kind of values and education they instill in young horse lovers. It’s here you’ll see many of the competitions I refer to. In and out of Pony Club, children are
jumping competitively every weekend up and down the country.... minutes in the ring after hours, days, weeks, months and years of preparation. I think that’s true of most sports but the added duty to care for and train an animal adds to a dimension of rigour. I’m not sure Libbi will keep riding; many teenagers give it up but for the moment, having grown up horse mad with parents who didn’t ride, I am immensely enjoying having a family member to share my passion with. If you’re horsey too, don’t worry though I make it my religion not to say anything other than ‘have fun’ or ‘that was great’. I prefer to leave the pushy pony parents to themselves.
