editor’s foreword

The chill of autumn is in the air and so we thought it rather apt to showcase some perfect picks for creating your cosy winter wardrobe. Grace Parry joins us as our new monthly fashion and lifestyle writer and guides you through the annual minefield that is investing in that style staple... the winter coat. You can meet Grace on page 67 and learn all about her style credentials. We also bring you a touch of Gothic Glamour in the shape of some gorgeous ideas for party hair on page 56. The creative team at Stuart Holmes have conjured up four fabulous styles for you to create... guaranteed head-turners. Local artist, Susan Wood, talks to us on page 15 of this month’s issue. Susan talks us through her impressive career and we learn all about her upcoming art exhibition in Cheltenham, as well as the inspiration behind her work. Gloucestershire is proud to celebrate a thriving business community and we find out all about some of the more forward-thinking employers in this month’s supplement... Great Places to Work in Gloucestershire. We begin our business journey to learn all about the way that things are done at these successful companies on page 75. We also celebrate an end to the moaning (myself included) over when Cheltenham will get an H&M store. Many of us have been eagerly awaiting the opening of H&M in Cheltenham’s Regent Arcade and the arcade’s Director, John Forward, tells us all about the development of the shopping destination as a whole on page 63 and the way in which the funds have been allocated to deliver a better shopping environment to locals and visitors alike. Finally.... it’s like Marmite. You either love it or hate it, but it can’t be ignored and next month we bring you our Cotswolds Christmas issue... time to start the festive planning and brushing up on your carol singing skills. We look forward to seeing you then!

painting which has dried sufficiently. I usually have breakfast at around 11am and then work on until about 4pm. If a painting is going well I will go back in the evening for another session or until the light is poor. I jot down any ideas of an abstract in my head at least once every day in a sketch book. I sometimes I use photos when I am out and about if I see a subject worth painting.

’’

I have lived in Cheltenham for over 20 years now... this is the longest I have ever been settled in one place. I love the town but I have not scratched the surface yet, I hope to find many more places and images to paint here. The view at the top of Leckhampton Hill in winter can be quite awe-inspiring for a landscape painting. Architectural abstracts from an aerial view are my favourite subject matter. After college, Bourneville College of Art, Birmingham where I studied architecture and pottery, I became a WREN in the Royal Navy, a professional squash and tennis coach at Goodwood Park, West Sussex, and a teacher at The Cheltenham Ladies' College. Quite varied jobs don't you think and so many images collated! I thoroughly enjoyed working at the Cheltenham Ladies' College and miss the girls very much. I still have a passion for all sports, I played internationally at squash and county tennis up until last year... now my knees are not so good but I do still enjoy social tennis. My main inspiration for my work comes from real life events, places I have visited, people with interesting faces and quirky objects with vibrant colours. Ever since I was young I have always wanted to be a full time artist... now at last my dream has come true. I have painted ever since I was a child. However, it is only now I paint every day because I have had other jobs in the past. A typical working day is an early rise at around 6.30am in the summer and I head for the kitchen for a cup of tea.... followed by another.... then I enter the studio. I have a room in our house, and continue with any oil

I try not to look too hard at other artists work as I find myself adopting their style, I try and keep to a style of my own

I try not to look too hard at other artists work as I find myself adopting their style, I try and keep to a style of my own. However, I have always loved the Impressionists and acrylic and oils are my favourite mediums to work in. I am having an Art exhibition in Montpellier Gardens, Montpellier, Cheltenham from the Wed 2nd to the 8th October. Opening times are from 10 - 7pm. I hope to continue to have another art exhibition next year and continue selling my cards locally. My exhibition is divided into three main sections, Contemporary in the main room, some impressions from the London 2012 Olympics and some oil painting from life experiences , for example The Ganges, India, Kent scenes and some life studies. Greenway Flaxley Setting the scene: Set at the end of a quiet rural lane in an elevated position under the backdrop of Chestnuts Hill, Chestnut House is a recently renovated and immaculately presented family home. Set in the middle of its plot with mature landscaped gardens on three sides and the paddock to the rear, the property enjoys unspoiled views in all directions. Why we love it: The accommodation is very flexible having been designed to be split to create an annex if required. The original 17th century stone built cottage has been heavily extended and completely overhauled by the present owners to create a spacious modern practical home with contemporary kitchen and all new modern bathrooms. The property also retains a number of charming character features such as attractive exposed stone walls, a flagstone floor in the sitting room and the Monmouthshire stone spiral staircase, bread oven and inglenook fireplace in the dining room. Outside, the predominantly lawned gardens have been planted with a variety of specimen trees and offer a number of secluded seating areas and sun traps. Above the garage, accessed by a bridge from the upper garden as well as the granary style steps, is a generous studio room complete with shower room, currently used as guest accommodation by the current owners. They do property... and they do it well We meet Michael Steedman, Head of Commercial Property at Thomas Legal Group... We heard from Simon David, Managing Partner of Thomas Legal Group, in our August issue. This month he hands the baton over to Michael Steedman to reveal how the Commercial Property Team at TLG will exceed your expectations. Michael is highly regarded by local professionals for the quality of his work and client care and is a Council member, previously Chairman, of NARA (The Association of Property and Fixed Charge Receivers). He advises lenders and practitioners in this area and we discover how he can help your business to grow... “I joined TLG early in 2011 to head up the Commercial Property Department. I have been based in Gloucestershire for more than 20 years, undertaking commercial property work for both regional and national clients. I currently work alongside fellow solicitor Imdaad Sulaiman to deliver the highest standard of service to our clients and we enjoy a great business relationship, having first worked together around seven years ago. Imdaad then moved to Dublin for work and, happily for us, returned to Gloucestershire and joined the team here. Since he has been back he has been forging new relationships but also continuing to expand those he held before, here in the county. A well- respected reputation really is essential to me on a personal level and obviously to TLG as a whole and this is why we are thriving in the property market. When I receive instructions from clients, there are always third parties involved and whether these are accountants, banks or surveyors , it’s my belief that if you perform well and get the job done then they will remember that and are more likely to refer business your way in the future. I like to have a practical and open relationship with the agents we work with and anything that is OCTOBER 2013

fundamental to a transaction I aim to get firmed up and in place in the early stages. That way we have the building blocks in place and any nasty surprises along the way can be avoided. It boils down to communication between all parties. There is little point in a lawyer working away on a transaction without having his or her ducks in a row! We need all the people expected at the party to turn up, so to speak! Doing a fantastic job is not enough if you then are unable to get bank funding, for example, or if you are about to exchange contracts and suddenly somebody says that actually, we have a really bad survey report. My team handle the sales and purchases of shops, warehouses, factories, offices, pubs – in fact any building that people don’t live in. We also cover landlord and tenant work and development work for site acquisition. Whether a business is at start-up stage or more established, we are on hand to advise. Start-ups need a bit more TLC. They may know what they do and know it very well, but might not be used to handling the leasing aspects and so it’s very important for me to outline exactly what they are getting into and what is expected of them before they sign on that dotted line . For example, a client may not have identified that with a short lease they may have to repair and re-decorate a whole building. Even if the lease is longer, and they exercise the option to terminate and leave then they still might incur a huge claim for repairs. Consequently it is very important that the lease or contract the occupier gets is suitable for what they want and it is key to know what their expectations are before they commit. Imdaad and I each have support and assistance from Stacey Sadler and Emily Richards. Emily started her training contract to become a solicitor with TLG

this month; she has been with us for some time as paralegal in an administrative role. As a company we are very keen to move people up. I think it’s testament to TLG, as a relatively young company, that we have our first qualified trainee returning to us in October to work as a Solicitor within our Londonteam. I am very conscious that when I was training, people took the time out of their schedules to spend with me and I think it’s important to give some of that back. I have had several trainees with me over the years and have been their principal supervisor. To see them progress from being quite green initially into fantastic solicitors is so rewarding and sometimes, when you get them on the other side of a transaction it can be very amusing! With the property market picking up, both locally and further afield, we are very much looking forward to growing the commercial arm of our business even further.” CS

Good Life

One of the reasons I love my job so much is that it’s incredibly diverse and touches on other passions of mine including fresh local produce (I'm such a foodie) and live music. This month I was lucky enough to go with Adam Henson (my boss) to Alex James' farm, where he and Jamie Oliver were hosting ‘The Big Feastival’. Alex has turned away from music (he was the bassist in the band Blur) and now produces fine cheeses near Stow on the Wold. His beautiful farm is the perfect venue for a celebration of live music and fantastic food. There were 15,000 people attending every day. With some of the most flamboyant and interesting food tents I've ever seen, some of the stands were presented in really quirky vehicles, like big silver bullet vans, vintage 1950s vans with drop down sides, and magnificent marquees offering their culinary delights. Some of the artists playing were Rizzle Kicks, KT Tunstall, The Feeling, Mark Owen and Basement Jaxx, who were headlining on Saturday night. There were old-fashioned fairground rides, including a helter skelter, big wheel and teacups, to name but a few. There was every attraction a child could wish for; face painting, bubble-blowing, trampolines, sweets and ice cream. There were also straw bales to play in, none of

OCTOBER 2013

which stayed intact for very long! And then there was our pop-up farm in the Little Dudes Den. It took us two days to prepare for the show. With difficulty, we selected the best animals to take with us: two donkeys (Tinsel and Ivy - the stars of our Living Nativity in December), five Golden Guernsey goats, sheep (Herdwicks, Norfolk Horns, Cotswolds, Kerry Hills, White Faced Dartmoors), baby rabbits (called kittens), week-old Columbian Blacktail chicks, Kune Kune piglets, ducks and chickens. We had a huge tented area to show off all of our beautiful animals and we had families and children visiting us all day to admire and pet them. The show was on for two days and kicked off at 10am. There was an almost constant stream of people to our tent as everyone loves a farm experience. There were smiles all around when Adam popped in on occasions throughout the two days and we loved seeing him on stage cooking with Jamie. As you can imagine, this all took some organising. There were four of us working for two days straight, organising all of the animal feed, the pens and transporting all of the animals. We even had to go to the fields on Adam’s farm and collect the freshly-baled straw. I lifted 120 bales by hand and stacked

them in the back of a huge trailer to take to the show. It was glorious weather and the view from Bemborough farm on this particular evening was to die for. I had a huge smile from ear to ear, soaking up the scenery... I love doing these big events as it’s so varied and there is such a buzz whilst setting up. It was lovely to meet so many people and be a little bit dazzled by celebs; like Holly Willoughby, Jamie Oliver, Spandau Ballet and Alex James, who I had the pleasure of meeting. It’s great to take the animals to events like this. Not just to raise awareness of rare breeds, but to watch the kids’ faces light up when they’re stroking a piglet or holding a chick. You would think that seeing this at work every week would make it less special, but I still absolutely love it and I think it’s great for young children to have such close contact with the animals. Maybe it will inspire them to be future farmers themselves… CS The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. The epitome of

OCTOBER 2013

AUTUMN By Steve Lannin, Head Gardener at Sudeley Castle

PHOTO: JENNIE RAINSFORD

I have to be honest from the start of this article and admit that I am biased when it comes to writing about October, because I am rather a fan! October for me is the start of the autumn and brings with it chilly mornings, autumn colour in the trees and the very epitome of autumn: the smell of bonfires! In the beautiful gardens of Sudeley Castle, all of autumn’s glory is reflected. The Queens Garden with its ancient yew hedges and whispers of Tudor decadence and splendour, hung with autumn mist on a grey October morning, will have its peace shattered by the shrill drone of two stroke petrol engines as gardeners compete in their annual duel with nature by trimming the lofty hedges. The gardens, beginning their transition into their sleeping state, have one last trick up their sleeve as the East border continues to blaze with reds, yellows and blues; their exoticlooking foliage in stark contrast to the prevailing conditions, their colourful hues complementing the changing colours of the stately broad leaved trees throughout the garden. October this year is marked out as a time of frantic planning however; there are going to be some changes here at Sudeley Castle this winter, and we are all rather excited! I'm really not sure how much I can say, so you will just have to keep a look out on our website and Facebook! I can however tell you about the changes taking place in the Queens Garden. The Queens rose garden at Sudeley Castle has long been recognised as one of the finest in England; not only for the fine and stately setting, or for its unique collection of roses, but for the expert way all of the disparate elements were expertly blended together by Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall back in 1988. Over the past few years our roses have started to show their age and after 25 years the garden is in need of a freshen up. In 2011 we replanted some of the rose beds, and this winter we are planning to replant the rest of the garden. This is no small undertaking and

will require the removal and replacement of over 100 tons of soil and the replanting of hundreds of plants, including countless new varieties of rose, all squeezed through the ancient yew domes which have left us with an access path no more than three feet wide! When we started to think about planning this project the choice of designer was almost too easy; Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall has returned to Sudeley with a fresh design for the rose garden, building on the past yet focussed on planting for the future. We are all very excited to have her back for this project, and if the last 25 years are anything to go by, then the future of the rose garden at Sudeley Castle looks secure. I hope you will come and see us and watch the garden develop. Gardens are organic and ever changing and in that they reflect our own lives; while

some aspects seem permanent and constant, they are based on constant change and renewal. October is such a magical month, I hope that you all enjoy it as much as me, and I apologise in advance if the screaming drone of my hedge cutter disrupts the gentle calm of this magical month! CS Sudeley is open until 3rd November and details of guided garden tours can be found on the website www.sudeleycastle.co.uk/visit-us/ tours-at-sudeley-castle. Follow us on www.Facebook.com/SudeleyCastle Gardeners Halloween at Sudeley this year promises to be a Spooktacular day out for all the family! THE UNLOVED Let me introduce to you the young lady that stands tall yet feels small, is as bright as a rainbow yet may as well often be black and white. That’s right, the chrysanthemum. She often suffers from the same affliction that curses the carnation, how soon we are to cry “They are just garage forecourt flowers, cheap, un-sophisticated”. I agree that they may be readily available and as frequently seen as Cotswold Stone in Chipping Campden, but where would we be in autumn without these traditional blooms? The majority are perennial plants and sit in the Asteraceae family. Their heritage lies in the far away climes of Asia where centuries ago in China the petals and leaves were frequently consumed in adoration. Sweet and sour chrysanthemums anyone?! Over time these blooms have become associated with death and funerals, a thought which may resonate with many and go some way to explaining their general lack of support. It is certainly an association at the forefront of minds in Italian culture in particular. In stark contrast in Japan they are celebrated as part of the festival of happiness on National Chrysanthemum Day! Indeed they were also much admired back in the middle of the 17th Century in England when a nursery in Chelsea brought back a purple variety from China which became the must have plant for every fashionable family of the day. Maybe we should give a little life back to these old ladies? (That sounds

OCTOBER 2013

BEAUTY

Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has just finished working on a brand new allotment based programme to be launched on the BBC next year. Here Camilla tackles a flower many are keen to ignore…

like a Eurovision song from the 1980s 'Give a little love back to the World' remember that? Maybe not, I'm a bit of a Eurovision fan, but anyway I digress, back to chrysanthemums....) The variety of colour is excellent and they remain very popular with florists due in the main to their long lasting vase life and availability. The ‘pompom’ varieties often referred to and used in arrangements get their name from the French who thought the blooms looked rather like ‘pompons’ (yes that is supposed to be an ‘n’ on the end!) on sailors’ hats!

“The variety of colour is excellent and they remain very popular with florists due in the main to their long lasting vase life and availability.” A great little lime green number (this sounds like a fashion article) is 'Froggy' with numerous pin cushion heads per stem and dark foliage: adds a modern zing to your borders and almost jumps out to greet you. Some fabulous autumnal coloured blooms are available, an RHS AGM holder is 'Bronze Enbee Wedding' with single light bronze blooms and ideal for a traditional end of year colour scheme. 'Bronze Elegance' gives an explosion of amber, bronze tinted

blossoms and is also a good choice. Pinks, whites and reds are also available, plus of course golden yellow, a fact illustrated in the Greek words used in the naming of this plant: chrysos meaning gold and anthemom meaning flower. Of all the possible pests and diseases which may introduce themselves to these plants, it is white rust that leaves chrysanthemums quaking in their roots. Introduced to this country on infected cuttings around 50 years ago, gardeners pray that rust doesn't pack his suitcase full of yellow spotted leaves and come to stay. Earwigs and aphids can also provide a problem, but on the whole these plants have a pretty good chance of offering you excellent colour right through until the end of the year. Pinching out top shoots early on is a good tip to provide more side shoots and a bushy flower laden plant. Don't just take my advice to introduce the chrysanthemum into your life, take a leaf (or flower) out of Japan's book where they not only celebrate with a national day mentioned above, but have also travelled with chrysanthemum decked passports, exchanged chrysanthemum embellished coins and if you are the Emperor, sat upon a chrysanthemum throne! Now I'm not suggesting that you cover your garden swing seat with plucked blossoms (that may be going a bit far and also a bit messy when your derriere squashes said blossoms) but still, perhaps we could open our minds to welcoming a new floral friend this October? “Walk This Way...” Unless you have been hibernating, the £20 million revamp that Regent Arcade has recently undergone has been very impressive. Not only did River Island open its doors to the public this summer, but H&M are now a permanent fixture in Cheltenham High Street. So, have you, like the marketing campaign encouraged, ‘Walked This Way’ into town and experienced the new and improved, Regent Arcade? Feedback has been greatly received and with H&M opening in the past few weeks, it has definately set a high standard for the town. We caught up with Centre Manager, John Forward, to find out more about the development. “We started work on the scheme at the end of January 2012, River Island opened in August and the feedback we’re getting is very good”. The arrival of H&M onto the High Street, will have undoubtedly, attracted countless people to the town, “H&M was never John Forward represented in the town, everytime I went anywhere I way they handle was always asked why we didn’t have an merchandise looks fantastic. It’s more of H&M. So, River Island and H&M now a department store than a TX Maxx. and sit side by side – it works perfectly. Instead of closing around 60 tonnes of cardboard, which Regent Arcade, customers were still able would go into a compactor and landfill. to shop throughout the refurbishment, We set ourselves a target to recycle 80% meaning both traders or customers did of waste and in the last year we’ve not miss out. This has been something that has been planned for a while as John says, “When we employed the contractor, we were keen that they, too, would recycle – they ended up recycling around 87% of what they demolished”. Regent Arcade’s demographic remains pure and simple; “We take cradle to the grave! We have such a variety of customers and I think that’s down to having the right mix – hair and beauty, homeware, womenswear to menswear. There’s something here for everybody”. So, surely there can’t be anything left to improve? “We have a few more initiatives, such as renewing the rear entrance to attract customers off the Promenade. We’re very open to seeing what we can do for the centre”. If you haven’t already done so, we suggest you ‘walk their way’ and indulge in the all new Style experience that Cheltenham has to offer. CS

fashion

Milling it over with LVH Lisa von Hallwyl talks all things fashion… I’m a country girl born and bred, raised in a rural town in Wiltshire and I’ve always loved fashion. I take a great deal of inspiration from nature and having grown up surrounded by countryside I have found myself immersed in the textures and patterns that are all around us, which is what truly defines me as a designer. Fashion has been my life for the past 20 years, stemming from childhood influences from Switzerland, to surrounding myself with colour and playing with my mother’s accessories and clothes, making dolls look pretty with makeup and making dresses for them, then eventually completing both Bachelors and Masters degrees in fashion and costume. Fashion is such an important topic and is one that I feel we should all fully embrace. Each outfit you wear says something about you, the wearer, as it represents you as a person. The meaning of fashion is not just for catwalks and models, it is actually for all of us, every day it is a different skin for us to wear to show our individuality through our clothes. It doesn’t just have to be about the high end designer brands, you can make yourself feel special by adding a new accessory or by trying something

MEET THE WINNER… Do you remember the competition we ran earlier this year to win the chance to have a hat designed for you by Lisa? Well, here’s our winner! “This is the beautiful hat that Lisa Von Hallwyl designed and made for me for my daughter’s wedding at the end of June. I was so happy to have the hat made for me and the photos were taken at the wedding reception at Dumbleton Hall Hotel, Dumbleton.” Maureen Bogaard

new. By just simply adding a new hat to an existing outfit you can reinvent it into a current trend. After university and after having worked for a Wiltshire based milliner I moved to Bishops Cleeve two years ago to establish my own brand and have never looked back. With its great mix of countryside and towns, wonderful shops and great events, the rustic and unique personality of the Cotswolds gives a great depth of culture to my designs. I take a great deal of pride in creating hats that people can wear and feel special in, as no-one is the same. In fact, the reason I set up my own millinery company in the first place was to find a way of bringing people’s personalities out and “Making their personality wearable”. I am now stocked in a dozen or so shops all around the country and it gives me such pleasure to see people taking my advice knowing I’m helping them to feel and look fabulous. My goal for this regular column is to share my enthusiasm of all things fashion, to look at trends, colours and events and offer practical advice on what to wear and how to wear it, whether this is explored in hat advice or just general chats on current fashion. CS Coming up next month... Put your questions to me, Do you need a hat for that special day but don’t know what would suit you, what will the next big fashion craze be? How does fashion make you feel? What do the clothes you wear say about you?

Anything that excites you about fashion, email me on Lisavonhallwylmillinery@gmail.com or Tweet me @lisavhmillinery. I love sharing ideas with people, so even if you just want to chat fashion then get in contact.

Grace&Glamour When it comes to the autumn-winter season, what is the single biggest investment piece every woman has at the top of their list? It has got to be the coat. Grace Parry, our new monthly fashion and lifestyle writer, considers the options... Coats have always been, and shall always remain, the longest standing winter essential. A good coat can change your body shape, entitle you to an influx of compliments and quite simply make an outfit. And of course it keeps you cosy and snug throughout the winter months. Each February, coats and jackets in all shapes and sizes are sent down the runways from New York to Paris. With words like cocoon and bomber being thrown around, it’s difficult to know which of this season’s most covetable styles are for you. But by looking at some of the best the shops of the

Meet the expert... Grace Parry “I'd like to say I found my love of fashion in my teens, when I knew you could make a profession out of an interest. But when I look back, it was so much earlier than that. I guess an interest in style always starts young.

Cotswolds has to offer, it won’t be long before you do. A trench is the best place to start. Every woman should own at least one. They’re perfect for those warmer days with a chill and flatter every shape. Hobbs has such a flattering style this autumn in subtle lighter beige than you would normally see. If you’re a fan of tailoring, but can’t bear to buy another basic blazer, look no further. The Sue Parkinson boutiques in Cirencester and Broadway stock 2nd Day’s black leather blazer. Leather and texture is always big this time of year and so easy to wear. There’s no doubt this one will shape up your simple suit wear. Pink is, or will be, everywhere before the cold and dark really does set in. Dusty roses and peachy pinks have infected the catwalks this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. If you’re

dying to try the trend, minus the marshmallow stigma, then Reiss has the most gorgeous belted jacket in blush that is crying out to be yours. A well designed bomber jacket can be an easy addition to a simple lunch outfit or drinks with the girls. Karen Millen does a well cut, high quality version each year and this season is no different. The signature leather jacket comes in tan and will be your go to piece over jeans and dresses this autumn. And that word cocoon I mentioned earlier, the one that either invoked excitement or terror when you read it could become your best friend this season. It isn’t often the words comfort and style are combined, but when it is, you need to invest. The cocoon shape is simple, snug and oh so stylish. Like the oversized herringbone coat by Gestuz, available at Sue Parkinson. Maybe it’s not so scary after all? See you next month!

Grace

@graceoliviap www.dorothyandolive.com

Before and during my studies, I worked in retail and styling, then tried to write as much as I could on the side. Now I'm fortunate enough to run my own website and write as a career. I have a classic, yet eclectic, style and I guess it shows through my favourite designers. Chanel - the epitome of classic style, Prada and Pucci - for the vintage elements. But Burberry will always be my first love. I would class a well cut blazer, shift dresses, skinny jeans and a whole lot of heels as my basic wardrobe essentials.”

Welcome With a word from our guest editor, Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success At some companies, people love coming in every day. At others, the pay check at the end of the week or month is the only thing that keeps them turning up. A great place to work runs deeper than high pay, perks and benefits. The work environment and most importantly the attitude of the employer is crucial. The best companies appreciate their workers and offer them benefits, empower them and make them feel valued. What the mix is and how you manage what works best for your company is the big question. No one size fits all. Generally companies that report high employee satisfaction have certain things in common.

Researched and compiled by Natalie Letch & Eric Barton

OCTOBER 2013

• They treat employees with respect. They share information, listen to and act on their ideas. • Assume they are responsible enough to manage their own time. • They treat employees fairly. They pay people decently and give them worthwhile benefits • They help employees with their careers and understand that not all careers are built the same. They have strong training programs, support education outside of work and have active mentoring.

• They understand that people have lives outside of work, and that these lives might sometimes impinge on their time and attention. They know its give and take, not give or take. • They see fun, humour and relaxation not as the enemies of hard work, but as allies. • They have a purpose – a mission – that everyone understands. Even better, every employee can tell you the role he or she plays in achieving that purpose. • They are good citizens of their communities and of the world. They think about their carbon footprint, they come up with creative ways to support local projects, actively promote volunteerism. They stand for something beyond simply increasing profits.

It's not easy to achieve all of this. But if we spend about a third of our lives working doesn't it make sense to do what we can to make our work environment great places to be?

GREAT PLACES TO WORK IN Our snapshot of some of the very best companies and work place environments in the county

In2Print

In2Print is a long established local business that prides itself on building long term relationships with local and national customers such as Supergroup; Cheltenham Ladies College; G4S; Cheltenham Town Football Club to name a few, as well as working with charities such as The Wiggly Worm Foundation and Hire A Hero. In2print provide both creative and print solutions to their clients. ‘These relationships are only strong because of the staff we employ and the commitment they give in terms of customer focus’, says Group Director Symon Hindmarch-Bye. ‘Our team is essentially quite small, they are extremely creative but most importantly they go that extra mile to get a job done to the standard our clients expect. They are a great team and the banter is really energising. A lot of the inspiration for our upcoming rebrand came from staff involvement with The Creative Network, which turned out brilliantly’. The company have embraced the sustainability agenda and have signed up to be a Carbon Neutral printer, which means that because of the work they are carrying out, they offset all carbon used, that way their customers can be assured they are using a company that will minimise its impact on the environment. As part of this focus on sustainability In2print are also engaged with the National Woodland Trust allowing customers full traceability of the paper they use and the cycle is complete when a new tree is planted. Having a link with the local community is really important and recently In2pint have embarked on 2 innovative projects. Working with Whole Foods they engage with local schools and students are encouraged to develop recipes that are based on a consideration of air miles used. Once they have discussed the reasons for choosing the ingredients, they then participate in a ‘cook off ’ to see who produces the most delicious meals with the lowest air miles. Great fun for all and brings home to students the global nature of the food industry and the impact this has on the environment. Whole Food and In2print are still looking for more schools who want to partner with them on this initiative, please contact symon@in2print.com for info.

BAM UK Ltd

BAM UK’s motto is: “To become the best and then get better!” – a statement that MD, Tim Bodenham, echoes throughout his company. BAM UK connects established brands with the student market, whilst creating an admirable work environment for their employees. Their ambitious goals include having “a clear vision that, ‘by 2017 BAM will be listed in The Sunday Times ‘Best Companies To Work For’”. The vision Tim says, “is not so much the accreditation, but more the change in the engagement and culture of BAM. Our real goal is to achieve a fully engaged and united team, delivering world class service. The vision’s accreditation would merely be a beacon indicating we are on the right tracks”. BAM invite their employees to have frequent staff and manager meetings, which not only increases employee engagement but also raises morale; as Tim says “(it ensures) they feel their thoughts and opinions are valued”. It’s clear that Tim values his employees (they even have a monthly in-house pamper room!) BAM’s ethos clearly contributes to the business’ overall performance. Continual training and team building events together with community engagement are all a part of life at BAM. Motivational rewards are in place that act as incentives for employees, “We strive to become world class leaders in not just our field of business but also as employers. We want our employees to love working for BAM, to be fully connected and engaged to the success and growth of the business”. Tim adds, “the results from our latest Internal Employee Engagement Survey Poll in May 2013 [showed that BAM...] achieved an overall engagement of 86.86%. This is why we believe that BAM Agency Ltd is the best place to work for, and why we strive to better ourselves, each and every day”.

Premiere Products also produce ‘Shine’ which is their hugely informative staff newsletter, keeping the workforce abreast of the latest developments. Their approach to communication is key to their delivery of any changes that the company may have to make. Peter Brown, Commercial Director said, ‘we take responsibility to the community very seriously and have actively sponsored The Gloucester Environmental Hero Awards featuring our Eco Force product which is a sustainable green chemical cleaning brand ‘. Peter also went on to say, our key benefits include ensuring our staff have a real sense of engagement with the business, ownership of crucial process changes and instilling a pride in our commitment to the community’. They also run an ‘employee of the month’ award scheme which honours outstanding contribution to the business and as you would expect from a family run business - a long service award. Premiere Products offers parking, and on site gardens where staff can relax. The company is very committed to growing their second phase management team, which includes a proactive group of talented employees. With a final nugget of advice and inspiration for other companies out there seeking to emulate the Premiere Products success, Peter simply said, ‘be focussed and stick to the change plan and ensure you communicate at all levels your vision for the future’.

The company provides a full package of benefits including: a training academy, company performance related staff bonuses; company contribution to private medical insurance; 10% matched contribution pension; permanent health insurance; the ability to buy and sell holiday and a subsidised on-site nursery. We believe in open communication with all staff. This begins with new starter lunches with the Director General, Steven Walker, and includes twice yearly all-staff business update meetings, staff newsletter and weekly company news stories on the intranet, and the Director General’s monthly blog. In our 2013 staff survey 86% of employees said they were ready to put in extra effort to support the success of the company. Staff turnover halved between 2011 and 2012. We are proud to be part of the Gloucestershire community. We attend careers fairs at local schools, and support local projects, like sponsoring a recipe book to help raise funds for a local school, and BITE - the 2014 Cotswold Food Festival. Our fun and fundraising group organises events throughout the year; in 2012 staff raised over £2,700 for charity. We have made significant investment to improve our working environment over the last year including the opening of a new staff restaurant and on-site Starbucks Café, and refurbishing office and laboratory space. There is an on-site wetland reserve where staff can spend their lunch and breaks and ample free staff parking. The company turnover has increased from £19.1 million in 2010 to £21.2 million in 2012 – an 11% increase over three years and profit increased 235% over the same time period. Our staff survey and client feedback are invaluable in monitoring staff morale and helping develop and improve the business. Give employees the opportunity to suggest new things, encourage them to make a positive difference to the business, and make them feel valued. We have ambitious plans for business growth. We want to continue to invest in facilities and the working environment and encourage staff development through our recently established staff academy.

Printwaste

At Printwaste Recycling & Shredding they strive to develop good working relationships with their employees and as a result have excellent staff retention rates. Knowing their employees enables them to understand their needs. A good example is through the provision of Flexi-Time enabling them to retain their working mothers and support the employees who have challenging personal lives. Training plays an integral part; they fully train each member enabling them to complete their job efficiently and enjoyably. Recently they engaged three-quarters of the staff in training through the Waste Management Industry Training & Advisory Board, where they were awarded a Level 2 certificate upon completion; twelve people have since progressed to Level 3 improving their knowledge of the industry. Through additional training they have developed a better engaged workforce. Staff have received recognition within the industry for their hard work and good practice. This has allowed the team to gain new knowledge and understanding on how to recognise and tackle any problems. Site improvements have enabled them to increase staff productivity and improve the working environment. The company performed a crosssite assessment, considering improvements on general housekeeping of the working environment. They have also enhanced their offices using recycled sources, improving the canteen and encouraging car sharing. It’s not all work. Printwaste regularly hold events for the workforce, holding everything from a BBQ for their 30th Birthday to involvement with the local community through various projects, including working with the Cobalt Unit and educating schools on the importance of recycling. The Printwaste team is clearly the key to their success and having the right person in the right job is crucial. The future looks rosy. Printwaste Recycling & Shredding have been short listed as finalists for a number of locally and nationally recognised awards. Can’t be bad!

Space Catering

Formed in 2000, catering equipment business, Space, are renowned for their approach to promoting a thriving working environment, known as ‘Investors In People’ (IIP). In 2012, Space won prestigioius award in both the Suppliers to the Industry and ‘Hospitality’ category ‘Best Employer’ in the Caterer & Hotelkeepers awards. With a low staff turnover, Space are growing increasingly towards being a company model of the future. Engaging and investing in staff is paramount to Space. Mike Mellor MD (pictured), says, “We maintain a training matrix showing training available to staff and what requirements they have for future training”. Social events are organised frequently that not only raise morale but encourage team building, “In the past we’ve been canyoning, canoeing, coasteering, archery, climbing and team building exercises like raft building and orienteering. We hire a large house, accommodating everyone and the whole team gets involved” All staff work towards an end goal at Space, “Share options are offered to and taken up by key personnel, all staff are paid a profit related bonus if targets are met so everyone is involved and benefits from the company doing well”, resulting in a motivated work environment. Space physical environment is another positive aspect, “We have a good central social space with kitchen, dedicated parking, plenty of meeting rooms, lots of natural light, and air conditioning all of which massively improved the working environment for everyone. On Fridays, we have ‘Free Friday’ where the company pays for a local sandwich company to prepare everyone’s favourite sandwich and deliver them to the office in time for lunch”. This thoughtful approach also extends further afield; staff engage in world charity causes as well as their clients’ charities at home. Additionally, Space has a focus on sustainability, which has resulted in being accredited to ISO 14001, recently “funding a number of energy efficient solid fuel ‘geo-cookers’ for villages in Africa by donating money every time we sold an energy efficient piece of kitchen equipment in the UK”

TOP TIPS A

profitable business is also down to the people and their personalities. If the product is good but the people delivering it are sloppy because they are not interested and motivated, the business will probably fail.

If people are happy, motivated, and properly engaged with the business, they will do a better job for you. Work

closely with your team to put in measures to keep them happy and keep monitoring and changing these measures to suit the moment and keep things fresh.

Creed Foodservice

Creed Foodservice have earned themselves a reputation for quality when it comes to the supply of food and related services in the foodservice market and currently serves more than 1,700 customers. Employing over 300 staff at their distribution centres, Creed are renowned for their staff engagement and positive working environment. MD, Chris Creed (pictured) says, “Employees are kept up to date with business news and priorities with a quarterly employee briefing given by the Executive board, as well as a monthly update from myself. Attendance at the employee briefings is voluntary and with a business that operates virtually 24/7 we understand that it’s sometimes difficult for all to attend, so we have tried to be creative in how we as an Executive board engage with staff ”. Creed operate a ‘Charity of The Month’, encouraging staff to raise the profile of various charities that are important to them. Chris says, “Staff benefit from days out supporting local charities; five of our team recently built a viewing platform for a local school at their on-site nature reserve. Staff love the idea of being able to raise the awareness of a charity that is close to their heart”. Ensuring they give something back to their staff, educational opportunities are offered to staff so that they may benefit from Creed’s expertise and contacts; “We’ve had suppliers host events for staff such as ‘cup cake masterclasses, and used our very own Executive development chef to hold events aimed at educating staff in cooking techniques and seasonal produce”. A recent annual staff survey proved very positive, reporting that 81% of staff felt fully informed on the business in respect of its operation, vision and future plans. Looking forward, Creed’s future plans are, as Chris says, “aggressive - we’re committed to ensuring the ‘Creed team’ are as fully engaged as possible, as without their full support we will not achieve our goals. Since 2009 our turnover has virtually trebled, this has only been achieved with the commitment from a great team.” CS

We develop and manufacture world class engineering and science based products using our core skills in measurement, motion control, spectroscopy and precision machining. From jet engine and wind turbine manufacturing, to dentistry and brain surgery, we apply innovation to solve tough engineering and scientific problems. RIGHT TO THE CORE… Eric Barton delves deep at local engineering giants Renishaw At the very nucleus of every successful company is the grinding heart of the staff. Research and development is all very well and good but becomes redundant if you don’t have the expertise and training to develop both staff and products. It’s like inventing the piano, but not being able to play it. Happily at local Gloucestershire company Renishaw they see their staff and the skills they have as crucial to the ongoing development of the company in terms of both products and services. Renishaw is one of the largest employers in the west of England and it’s ‘cut glass clear’ that Renishaw take their responsibilities to their staff very

seriously indeed. There’s also a very apparent mood in fostering a very positive role that they can play through their relationships with the local community, businesses, schools and sports organisations. The company mission is very precise; Renishaw will design, manufacture and supply metrology systems of the highest quality and reliability to enable customers worldwide to carry out dimensional measurements to traceable standards. Now that’s a huge statement and it’s my guess that a task like that has to be fuelled by staff, innovation and the environment they work in. Ben Taylor, Assistant Chief Executive commented,

‘we offer an environment that actively promotes innovation and progress within which individual talents can flourish’. He went on to say,’ we have a diverse mix of ages and gender. Proper consideration is given to applications for employment from disabled people who are employed, where suitable, for appropriate vacancies. Opportunities are also given to employees who become disabled to continue in their employment or to be trained for other positions’. At Renishaw they undoubtedly promote an excellent working atmosphere that encourages their employees to stay with them. Their UK staff turnover rate is only 3.2% and that’s

Renishaw helped to fund a mobile laboratory for Rednock School, Dursley

“We offer an environment that actively promotes innovation and progress within which individual talents can flourish.” almost half the UK manufacturing industry national average. A trend incidentally that’s continuing downwards. It’s hugely impressive and speaks volumes about environment, management approach and of course empowerment. They wisely recognise the hard work and dedication of their employees by offering a host of excellent benefits like on-site gyms, flexible working for the majority of UK employees and subsidised restaurants at the larger UK locations. Their UK employees volunteer to run a sports and social club which offers discounted events and tickets for employees and their families. A group performance bonus programme is also available to all qualifying staff members. The maintenance of a highly skilled workforce is paramount to any

OCTOBER 2013

business and Renishaw are no different in this regard. The company directors place great emphasis on the continuation of the company’s approved training policy. Just in the last year staff training included £290,000 spent on apprenticeships and £450,000 on centrally administered cross- departmental training. Overall, this amounts to a 94% increase in their training budget. It’s a crystal clear indication of how important training and development is to them. A major strength of Renishaw throughout its history has been the encouragement of young talent, with an apprenticeship scheme that started way back in 1979, together with a sponsored student scheme that was instigated in 1984. Lucy Ackland at just 25 years old has gone through an exciting journey as she

has progressed from a young 16-year-old engineering apprentice at Renishaw, to her current role as a Process Engineering Project Manager. Lucy said, ‘I would highly recommend this route through education to everyone, especially girls considering their next stages in education’. She believes in it so much she also now finds time to be a Young Engineers Ambassador. Talk about giving something back! The Company also has a fundamental aim to nurture the next generation of engineers and scientists and during the past 12 months they have taken steps to accelerate engagement with the educational sector. In a sense it’s a commitment to ensure that they stay at the very coalface of research and development. Being part of the community is key to any business having a positive public face and Renishaw take their community responsibility very seriously. It’s about involvement, transparency and caring. The feel good factor is hugely apparent in that their Charities Committee made donations to 170 individual organisations last year. The charity and sponsorship activities are wide ranging. Just a small glimpse reveals that during this last year alone they sponsored and actively contributed to numerous festivals, including Stroud International Textiles, where seminars explored the increasing influence of textiles within engineering and science, and the Cheltenham Design Festival, where they sponsored a session that looked at the design challenges faced by large scale power generation projects. The list of their community activities is almost endless. Says a lot. And through all this technology and high-end engineering you can even get on your bike. They provide showers, lockers and secure bike storage areas for any members of staff who want to cycle into work. Sounds like a nice place to work. CS For more information www.renishaw.com

Export Opportunities

Growing exports is a key opportunity for many businesses in the County. In partnership with Richard Graham MP and UKTI Circle2Success organised a business round table with the Indonesian Ambassador and other key directors from the embassy. Indonesia is a huge market and the opportunity to discuss business with the Ambassador in such a small group was a unique experience. Companies around the table included Renishaw; Premiere Products; Green Gourmet & Avon Metals. John Little, Fluid Transfer said ‘we already do business in Indonesia and looking to increase this significantly. Having such high level contacts is invaluable’.

Educational Insights

Local business leaders and heads of some of Gloucestershire’s leading schools came together at Gloucester Rugby to listen to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education. Michael talked about the importance of consolidating business and educational relationships. He recognised that Gloucestershire was already a long way ahead and there was definately a willingness to work together. He also talked about schools being measured on their students success in their destinations.

THE CARROT, NOT THE STICK… Eric Barton visits local insurance and financial solutions company Brunsdon Environment is everything. We spend almost two thirds of our lives working, so we may as well try and ensure that the work place is one of our choosing and not crammed with compromise or a fitful yearning to be somewhere else. As far back as 1932 a certain Mr Gilbert Brunsdon had that very feeling. Mr Brunsdon after being subjected to the ‘stick’ and subsequently refusing to whitewash a cellar wall for his employer when business was slack decided that striking out on his own would be the prudent move and opened his own business in Gloucester City Centre. Brunsdon has never looked back. Of course in those days it was all about providing local farmers with

88 COTSWOLD STYLE

insurance. Today the business now employs 65 people and handles millions of pounds worth of business on behalf of thousands of clients. The old values are still there though, with a strong belief that good business is where all parties gain. This is an attitude that also extends itself internally to the way the Brunsdon staff are valued. Brian Morman, CEO, Brunsdon said, ‘here at Brunsdons it’s like a theatre production. The audience are our clients, the on-stage performers are our client facing executives and our back stage personnel are our administration. Every member of staff here is crucial in making ‘the show’ happen’. It’s evident that Brian and all the Senior Managers

operate an open door policy and in fact in the time I spent in Brian’s office there was a constant stream of visitors. It’s that kind of approachable ethos that really makes a business tick and where the staff feel valued and know they can access the bosses at any time. We all know that the recent doom and gloom has taken its toll on many businesses throughout the UK. The banks have laid off some 50% of their Financial Advisers, so it’s hugely encouraging for the local economy here in Gloucestershire that Brunsdon have increased their head count by some 10% in the last two years and are set to double that over the next 10 years. In fact later this year they’re embarking on an

OCTOBER 2013

000 Great places to work Brunsdons DPS:Layout 1

apprenticeship scheme which will really help and encourage young people to enter the sector. To me that smacks of putting something back and is a true reflection of a business that takes its community responsibility seriously. One member of the Brunsdon staff has been there for 42 years with some 20% of them clocking up 20 years service. That’s amazing and a huge testament to both environment and work satisfaction. Dean Baldwin a Senior Financial Adviser at Brunsdon commented,’ I came here over 13 years ago and to be honest my knowledge was limited. I’ve had some of the best training in the UK here which has seen me really develop my skills. The training is second to none and they really

24/09/2013

14:48

Page 89

listen to what I have to say. That’s very important to me. I felt at home here from day one’. It’s not often you meet someone in the work place that hasn’t got a grumble about something. Not the case at Brunsdon. What you see is what you get. Brian goes on to further say,’ we lead from the front here. It’s our basic mode of operation to be ‘politics free’ in the office and ensure that the business is nimble in its attitude to the way we treat staff and clients. Being adaptable is what we’re very good at together with providing our staff with the tools to do the job is paramount’. Commercial Executive Rob Lewis who has been with the company for 25 years also added, ‘I

“Being adaptable is what we’re very good at together with providing our staff with the tools to do the job is paramount’”

have never contemplated working anywhere else. Its not laziness, it’s about the way they treat and value me. I’ve made some great friends here and the open door policy is something that I know all the staff really appreciate’. The training for staff at Brunsdon is an on-going process and preparing for exams to keep compliant with the law and the ever-changing landscape of the insurance and financial services sectors seems to be the focus. Quite right too. We all want to deal with experts’ do we not? In fact one of the Financial Advisers, Alex Bound is one of only 500 Chartered Financial Planners in the UK. And that’s all down to the Brunsdons approach to personal development. Brian finally says,’ you can teach skills, but you can’t teach character. It’s my strong belief that if we employ people who are honest, reliable and not afraid of hard work and commitment, then we can teach them the skills’. The company also has a feel good factor embedded in the business in that they have established their own Heartfelt Foundation and have recently raised over £22,000 and re furbished the Children Assisted Washroom for Pied Piper at Gloucester Royal Hospital. Can’t be bad when a company can find time to get involved in local charities. There’s no doubt that at Brunsdon they do recognise and develop the potential in their people. You just have to look around to see the success stories (and there are many) of those who joined as a ‘tea-person’ or a ‘junior’ and who are now Senior Managers or Advisors. It’s this organic growth from within that encourages people and empowers them to realise their full abilities. Better the carrot than the stick. I’m sure Gilbert Brunsdon would approve. Mat Waddington and Hannah Perry from Harrison Clark Rickerbys, answer your questions...

Q

My husband and I are in the process of divorcing and we have 2 children aged 9 and 7. I have always been their main carer. My husband is a good father to them. He is asking for 50% shared care but I don't think that is right for the children. Can you help me?

A

We must always have an eye on what a court would be likely to do if there is disagreement between a mother and father when they split up. The first thing to say is that a court should not be the first option; it should always be treated as the final resort. Attempts should be made to utilise Mediation or Collaborative Law, which are renowned in these cases for producing a friendly result rather than the acrimony that court proceedings would bring.

Whichever process is used to try and settle the case, the professionals involved will always have a view as to what is in the children's best interests. Indeed, the main principle behind the Children Act 1989 is that the children's best interests are of paramount importance. The courts look at various factors including: Ascertainable wishes and feelings of the child concerned given the child's age and level of understanding – In other words what do the children want and how old are they. The older the child is, the more weight given to their views. If a child is 12 or over, their views are generally determinative of the case; in other words, what the child wants the child should get. In this case, as the children are 7 and 9, the court will listen to

their views but wouldn't necessarily order exactly what they are saying.

Risk of change in circumstances - As parents, we all know that you should try and maintain a child's routine as much as possible. The more disruption a child experiences, the more unsettled they become. When looking at with whom a child lives, the court should ask who the main carer for the child is. In this case the answer is you and therefore the courts would really need to look at there being a very good reason to change this arrangement. In this case, if there is no risk of harm, then it is probable that you would end up with the majority of time with the children.

Risk of Harm – The court would really only countenance a change in the residence of children if there is a risk of harm from their main carer. Risk of harm could be emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or neglect. Assuming you are not a risk of harm to the children and are fully capable of meeting their needs, then it is highly likely that you would continue to be their main carer. It is unlikely that your husband would succeed in an application for a shared residence order for 50% of the time. Fighting for

FAIRNESS Gloucestershire business entrepreneur, Abdul Mannan, asks for your support Democracy is a word we use everyday quite lightly without fully appreciating its true meaning or how lucky we are to enjoy the freedom to vote or speech the right to choose our own government. When it comes to democracy, equality and fairness this great nation, Great Britain, has been a shining inspiration for centuries. But even in this 21st century there are countries that are fighting to obtain democracy or maintain their democracy. One of those countries is Bangladesh. The people of this proud young nation sacrificed their lives and fought for their independence during the Liberation war of 1971. Today the very ideal these people have fought for is being taken away by the current government. They are holding an election without appointing a care taker government, therefore making the election unfair and biased. In support of fairness and equality, Mr Abdul Mannan, CEO of The Brasserie Group, whose country of birth is Bangladesh,

“Democracy is a word we use everyday quite lightly without fully appreciating its true meaning or how lucky we are to enjoy the freedom to vote or speech the right to choose our own government. Abdul Mannan feels that it is the basic human right of the citizens of Bangladesh to fairly elect a government under a caretaker government. And now after a long time there is a shining light in Bangladesh, who has the vision to lead this proud young nation to prosperity and operate as a 21st century country needs to. His name is Mr Tarique Rahman (pictured left). Mr Rahman is leading the campaign against this current government for holding this

unfair election. Mr Tarique Rahman, who is currently residing in the UK, is campaigning with fellow Bangladeshis to the UK government to persuade the current regime for a fair election. Mr Abdul Mannan is pledging his support with Mr Tarique Rahman for his campaign against this kind of government and democracy. To most people in this country it may not matter about the obstacles and injustices the Bangladeshi people are facing by fighting for fair election, but as citizens of a developed nation we should all care, after all everything they are fighting for is alsoour belief. regulations. Now if you’ve got a small business do you really have the time to spare to manage all of this? Probably not. And the feeling I get is that most accountants won’t want to, or be able to handle the kind of processes that will need to be put in place. Marcus Gomery the Managing Director at Complete

PHOTO: GEORGIE PHAIR PHOTOGRAPHY

When I have a headache I take a pill or go and see a specialist. I certainly don’t administer some strange remedy to myself in the hope that some miracle ‘witch doctor’ moment is going to do the job. The pension’s landscape in the UK is just about to produce its very own migraine for thousands of SME’s. Auto enrolment is in short the Government’s solution to providing an income for all of us into our dotage. It’s their saving solution that employers will have to deduct from all of us at source to ensure that the eventual pension pot is enough to stop us all from starving or freezing to death. It’s a neat trick, but it’s going to catch out thousands of small employers if they’re not careful. In short it’s going to be an administrative headache. At Complete Auto-Enrolment Solutions in Gloucester they are the very administrative medicine that all local companies may just need, saving them time, money and resources. Auto enrolment will cost some British SME’s up to £28,300 per business and take up to 103 man days. Local firms here in Gloucestershire really need to prepare themselves for the sheer amount of paperwork and bureaucracy that will be involved. Even the SME’s that use the Government’s National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) will not entirely avoid the bureaucracy as the preparatory work involved is equally torturous and time consuming. And the form-filling does not end once the auto enrolment scheme is in place. The ongoing administrative burden for UK firms is also likely to take up to three days a month to complete. Businesses will have to complete an average of 33 administrative tasks in order to be ready for the new pension

Complete Auto-Enrolment Solutions Directors Sebastian Merritt and Marcus Gomery

“It’s a neat trick, but it’s going to catch out thousands of small employers if they’re not careful. In short it’s going to be an administrative headache” Auto-Enrolment Solutions said, ‘it’s crucial that all local businesses know their staging date. By that I mean the actual date they will have to start the process of making deductions from their staff at source’. In fact, on checking I found out that as an example companies

with just 90 employees will have to be ready by 1st May 2014. Seb Merritt, Director at Complete Auto-Enrolment Solutions commented, ‘we provide an end to end solution for our clients taking away and handling all the administration for them. We have specific software that has been developed to assist us to do this. It will help every company prepare for their staging date to ensure a smooth path. It will also simplify the numerous processes’. These numerous processes are almost ‘labyrinthic’ and include; assessment, compliance, communication to the employee and reporting. So you see this could be a real pain for small businesses, but it’s got to be done. No escape, no excuses. It’s like tax, it’s got to be paid and administered properly. Fines for non compliance can be very hefty indeed ranging from fixed penalties of £5K – £10K per day. It’s a scary thought that just because you got behind with your pensions admin you could be in for a very punitive fine. And no small business wants that. At Complete Auto-Enrolment Solutions they are there to provide the solutions to handle all of this. Marcus Gomery finally added, ‘our initial consultation is absolutely free with no strings and we can either visit the business or they can visit us here in Gloucester’. So you see, there’s no need to suffer from an auto enrolment headache, the remedy is right on your doorstep. CS For more information www.ca-es.co.uk Tel: 01452 623635

A Foraging Feast with Food Writer Shelle Duffin The summer nights are drawing to a steady close, the temperature is beginning to cool as the trees start to shed their beautiful crisp golden leaves – yes, Autumn is coming. It’s an enchanting time of year; the season of change, with nature putting on a magnificent display of richness and colour. A smoky aurora floats through the air as wood-burners are re-lit after a summer untouched, cosy cashmere

jumpers and woolly hats are pulled out of closets and delicious smells of warm soups and stews bubbling away on the Aga fill the house. Autumn also presents an exciting prospect that the whole family can revel in and I'm not just talking about the new series of Downton Abbey, though in addition, I am referring to foraging. Celebrity chef, Marco Pierre-White, once said that ‘if you aren’t prepared to go out and get it, do you really have the right to eat it?’ Now, even though I think he makes an excellent point, I am not advocating stepping out and slaying a cow or, may I quickly add, expecting you

Blackberry and Apple Crumble

Blackberry Liqueur

INGREDIENTS 500g blackberries 1 litre of vodka 600g caster sugar 300ml water 2 cinnamon sticks 2 glass bottles

Serves 6 INGREDIENTS

Topping: 50g rolled oats 50g wholemeal or plain flour 100g ground almonds 100g brown sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 100g butter METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C 2. Peel, core and cut the apples into segments and put them into an ovenproof dish with the blackberries.

Recipe file

The perfect winter warmer, hip flask filler or festive gift

Everybody loves a good humble crumble, one of Britain’s most celebrated desserts.

3 cooking apples (Braeburn) 300g blackberries 4tbsp brown sugar 2tsp cinnamon ½ lemon, juiced

to either. However, nature does offer many delicious treats we can seek in a slightly less drastic fashion. Living in the heart of the Cotswolds, we are not short of captivating walks through woods, along rivers and around fields to forage and feast on nature’s delights. I have chosen to base my recipe this month on blackberries, as I believe that in this particular dish, it delivers a real sense of autumn. Any blackberries you have left over, I strongly recommend you try making blackberry liqueur (see recipe below) – it will be ready in time to be used as that vital winter warmer during the colder months that lie ahead!

Sprinkle with the sugar and cinnamon, and drizzle with lemon juice 3. To make the crumble topping, using your hands, rub the flour, butter, oats and sugar together in a bowl until you achieve a breadcrumb consistency 4. Mix in the ground cinnamon and almonds 5. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit and bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes until the crumble topping is golden and the fruit is tender. 6. Serve immediately with ice cream, custard, and cream or crème fraiche. Don’t let any leftover blackberries go to waste…

METHOD 1. Heat the water and sugar together on a low heat until the sugar dissolves then set to one side at room temperature. 2. Equally pour the vodka into two sterilised bottles and again, equally share the sugar syrup and blackberries between the two. 3. Place a cinnamon stick into each bottle before sealing with lids and placing in a cupboard for two weeks to a month, shaking occasionally. 4. Strain the liqueur through a fine muslin before bottling up and placing back into the cupboard for a further month to mature.

The perfect partnership With Nick Stephens from Bordeaux Undiscovered What a marvellous summer we have just experienced here in the Cotswolds! As we enter October, wild duck will soon be appearing in the shops and on our restaurant menus I thought I would share a simple but delicious recipe for this indigenous wild bird which is a particular favourite of mine.

Wild Duck Breasts with Berry and Port Sauce Serves 2

Ingredients 4 wild duck breasts Sunflower oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the sauce: 2 good tablespoons cranberry sauce 200g blueberries 1 glass Port

Method: Pre heat the oven to 200°C, Gas Mark 6. Rub the duck breasts lightly with a little oil and season then pan fry, skin side down over a medium heat for 2 minutes until they begin to crisp and brown. Place in a small roasting tin, skin side up and roast for 5 minutes. Meanwhile spoon the cranberry sauce into a small pan with the blueberries and heat gently, stirring occasionally until the mixture is simmering and the blueberries are softened. Now stir in the Port and pass the mixture through a sieve pressing the mixture through with the back of a spoon so that none of the liquid is wasted. Return the smooth sauce to the pan to reheat gently, adding a little water if it seems too thick; it should be just thick enough to pour. Serve the duck breasts sliced on a bed of seasonal vegetables, spinach or spring OCTOBER 2013

greens are good, with a little of the sauce poured over. Sauté or Lyonnaise potatoes go particularly well with this dish.

The next question is what wine should be served after you have taken the trouble to prepare this succulent gastronomic delight? Many of us have a favourite wine and serve it with most any meal we have. Just like going to your local Chinese restaurant and ordering your favourite number 27 off the menu, time after time. To expand your palate you have to go beyond your comfort zones and try different wines with alternative dishes. As in life, if we keep doing the same things over and over again without change how can we expect different results? Duck has a very delicate flavour which needs to be harnessed with the correct wine. It also can appeal to a variety of wines from a German Spätlese, a Grand Cru Alsace through to a good Burgundy or Bordeaux. It even lends itself very nicely to a Sauterne if it is cooked with an orange, peach or apricot sauce.

wine from Bordeaux. Why? Because the Left Bank is known for its superb Cabernet Sauvignon grape which has the perfect characteristics to really harmonise with the delights of pink duck. History tells us that the Cabernet Sauvignon grape originates from a crossing of the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc grapes from the 17th century and it has rich blackcurrant aromas with hints of spice, herbs, rounded tannins and rich fruits. To me it resembles blueberries, moist, succulent, full of soft fruit and a hint of sweetness. All these characteristics add up to a very suitable partner for duck and enhance the delicate flavours from the meat without over powering it. If it is within your budget I would suggest a Moulin Riche (about £30) from St.Julien which boasts a blend consisting of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the third wine of Chateau Leoville Poyferre which is a Bordeaux Second Growth. Alternatively if you are looking for a wine under £10 try our Chateau Ballan Larquette at just £9.99 which has a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. Whichever wine you choose make sure it's a well made wine which has Cabernet Sauvignon as the most predominate grape in the blend and I am sure you will enjoy the experience. Bon appétit! OCTOBER 2013

Mark Yates as a manager and player

PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

Bidding for a third consecutive appearance in the League Two play-offs, Cheltenham Town have not started the 2013/14 campaign how they would have hoped. It has been a testing time for manager Mark Yates, with injuries to several of his key men, goals leaking in by the bucket load and no home League win at the time of going to press. But Yates has built up enough credit over the past two seasons to deserve full backing at this extremely early stage. He should be judged primarily on how his full strength starting line-up performs further down the line. The one thing Yates has brought since taking over from Martin Allen in 2009 has been stability on and off the pitch. He is now the fifth longest serving manager in the country, behind only Arsene Wenger (Arsenal), Paul Tisdale (Exeter City), Chris Wilder (Oxford United) and Nigel Clough (Derby County). It is a startling statistic which highlights the precarious nature of his trade, but Yates’ job is nothing but safe because he has comfortably exceeded the expectations of chairman Paul Baker. Chopping and changing managers on a regular basis can work for some clubs, with Chelsea’s packed trophy cabinet the most obvious example, with nobody surviving for long during the Roman Abramovich era. But for a club with limited funds and a modest fan base, the most sensible thing to do is give a manager time to find the right formula and Yates will hope he is closing in on it as his experience of leadership in the basement division reaches nearly 200 games. He has raised the expectation levels so quickly that three years ago, Robins fans were relieved just to see their team stay in the Football League, but now many

PHOTO: SWNS.COM

COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE

expect promotion to League One. Yates is by no means the finished article and there are many aspects of the role in which he knows he can and must improve. But he is diligent, thorough and constantly analysing how he can go about things differently to bring about improved results. His player recruitment has been outstanding and he is well on the way to obtaining his pro licence coaching qualification. As he approaches his fourth anniversary at the helm in December, the difference between the team he has at his disposal now and the one he inherited is immense and he is undoubtedly an asset. At least two clubs have shown an interest in Yates, who was forced to cobble together a squad with a relatively

miniscule budget in 2009/10 before the club’s financial recovery gave him more to play with. But much of the money he has been given to spend has been generated by his team’s achievements, with two FA Cup third round ties against Premier League opposition, a play-off final appearance at Wembley and this year’s Capital One Cup second round trip to West Ham United. When Cheltenham first signed Yates as a player from Kidderminster Harriers in 1999, then Robins boss Steve Cotterill said that his new midfield enforcer was not a ‘fancy dan’. He was an uncomplicated, hardworking player who made the best of his ability and he is similar as a manager. The club is in safe hands and it does not take long for a reckless and rash reign from someone who does not understand the club to have Cheltenham staring at a return to non-league football, which would be a disaster. If you are at a loose end on a Saturday afternoon, why not go and give Cheltenham and Yates your backing and who knows what is possible…just look at Yeovil Town. CS

OCTOBER 2013

The state of the national game doesn’t look good. There has been a lot written recently about the prospects or lack of prospects of the nation’s football team and it doesn’t look good at the moment. Everything seems to be playing catch up with other nations and I fear that things will worse before they get better. In 2005 England were ranked 5th in the FIFA rankings and now they lie 17th, which shows a fairly dramatic drop. The million Dollar question is why? Why is that we have an excellent crop of players but we don’t compete on the world stage. I often hear some flippant comments like we cannot pass the ball as well as other nations but this doesn’t wash with me. It is too simplistic. We have some unbelievable passers of the ball in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerard, and Michael Carrick etc. The list goes on. They have great vision, a great weight of pass, and can pass all types of ball. I don’t believe passing is the problem, it is the lack of outlets and team mates available to be passed to. In England there are several passes that go astray and often the guy making the pass takes the flak from the fans, but I look at it differently. They sometimes only have one option to pass the ball where as players in other countries with an abundance of creative midfielders, are making angles for the pass, receiving in tight areas and moving it on again quickly. I feel that we coach players in the wrong way as a whole. I do feel we are improving but we are only copying other nations that already have a system in place. Our current system is churning out players that aren’t suited to successful international football at present. Football evolves constantly and we just

seem to be reacting to change instead of being proactive in change. 10 years ago England was strict 4-4-2 formation and now it is all 4-2-3-1. But we still become rigid in our approach. I feel we are too specific in our guidance to players and almost knock out some of their creativity. Spain recently fielded a team with no striker and were confident of doing so. Their approach was simple, they put talented footballers on the field and ask them to identify who and when they should roam forwards. It was laughed at in this country as for some reason it is a pre requisite to put a centre forward on the team sheet. It MUST happen. Again Spain are leading the way in evolving the wonderful game. England need to find a way to facilitate and nurture creative players and build teams around them rather than stick them on the wings like we tend to do historically. Take the reins off these players and allow them to roam around and pick up pockets of space and pick up the ball. Clive Woodward was the first to introduce the tight Rugby shirts and he worked with Nike to achieve this. Shortly afterwards, the France National Rugby team were wearing them and then more and more followed. Clive called a meeting with his elite squad. He told them all that the dynamics of international rugby was changing. Nations were now following England’s lead. A big statement. I feel England have a long way to go. CS @duffo16

A New Dawn

October – the Christmas cards are in the shops, The X Factor is on TV and the Cheltenham 2013/14 season gets underway... Every season begins with a sense of anticipation; you always have one eye on the Festival with the notebook at the ready should you spot a potential dark horse for the main event. The winds of change have swept through Prestbury Park since the curtain came down on last season. The £45m redevelopment will be taking place up until the 2016 Festival.. Cheltenham will continue to operate as normal throughout the whole of the redevelopment, no fixtures will be lost, it is very much business as usual. At the Paddy Power Open meeting in November and the Festival in March a temporary stand which will be appropriately named – Arkle (2014 is the 50th anniversary of the first Gold Cup won by ‘himself ’). This will be in situ where the A&R boxes previously were and will consist of three levels which will encompass: public viewing facilities with a public bar on the first level – then Hospitality and the Royal Box will feature on the second and third levels respectively. The collective prize money for all sixteen race days in Cheltenham’s calendar now stands at an impressive 6.1 OCTOBER 2013

million pounds. There are upgrades to the Schloer Chase (run at the Open Meeting) which now stands at listed class. At the Festival; the National Hunt Chase is now listed class and the Jewson Novices Chase now holds grade one status. There is also a new arrival in the form of Sophia Brudenell; who is the Regional Communications Manager for Cheltenham and the South West. Sophia arrived at Cheltenham in August following on from the departure of Andy Clifton, bringing with her a wealth of experience gained with London based JSC Sport; a PR and Sponsorship company which is predominantly based in Horseracing. At JSC her major clients were Kempton Park, Sandown Park and Epsom Downs which like Cheltenham are all in the Jockey Club group of Racecourses. It’s apt to say that racing is very much in Sophia’s pedigree as her stepmother is Bloodstock Agent Amanda Skiffington; who was responsible for the purchase of Sussex Stakes winner Toronado. The superstar colt has lit up the 2013 Flat season in his epic duals with Dawn Approach. It’s therefore no surprise that

Sophia names Toronado as her favourite Flat horse. Over jumps that honour goes to Kauto Star; as she was closely involved with the marketing campaigns associated with the best staying steeplechaser of the modern era, Including the Betfair sponsored search for Kauto Star’s biggest fan. I asked Sophia to name the horse that she is most looking forward to seeing in this coming season and without hesitation she replied -‘Sprinter Sacre’ as she has only seen him once in his scintillating career and the hope is there that Cheltenham will see the ‘Black Aeroplane’ grace it’s hallowed turf at least once before he arrives in March to defend his Queen Mother Champion Chase crown. It’s an incredible fact that Sprinter Sacre is unbeaten since December 2011 and all of his victories from then on have been won by a combined total of 124 lengths. It’s very much a case of Lights, Camera, Action – as the home of jumping takes centre stage. CS Cathryn Fry Twitter @cathrynfry

CHARITY CAR SKIP AT WESSEX

Car owners in Gloucestershire are being given an opportunity this month (September, 2013) to raise money for charity by trading in their old vehicles at a dealership in the city of Gloucester. Wessex Garages is running a skip your car scheme from now (September 17) until October 17. For every vehicle traded in a donation will be made to the dealership’s charities of the year. Matthew Cripps, General Manager at the dealership on Mercia Road, explained: “To mark the launch of the new registration plates we are running the skip your car scheme where people can scrap their old vehicle in exchange for a brand new one. “We also thought it would be a good way for us to fundraise for our charities of the year, the Pied Piper Appeal and Winston’s Wish. “Through the scheme anyone who decides to trade in their old vehicle for a new one will receive a minimum of £1,000, Part exchange which can be taken off the price of the new car. “We will also donate £20 from every sale made through the scheme to the two OCTOBER 2013

charities. Customers will be able to choose which charity they would like the donation to go to.” The Skip your car idea has already created a lot of interest from the local media and Traffic passing the Mercia road premises. So come down to Wessex Garages and get your car valued and take a test drive in one of the great products we have available . The Pied Piper Appeal, based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester, was created in 1992 to improve the lives of sick children in Gloucestershire. Initially started to fund a new children’s hospital for the county, the charity now helps sick children from across Gloucestershire in many different ways. Winston’s Wish, which is based in Cheltenham, is the leading childhood bereavement charity and the largest provider of services to bereaved children, young people and their families in the UK. The charity helps young people re-adjust to life after the death of a parent or sibling. People will be able to take part in the skip your car scheme at Wessex Garages

on Mercia Road until Thursday, October 17. Matthew added: “We would also like to thank Alstone/ Speedy Skips of Gloucester for supplying the skip we are using for the scheme.” Wessex Garages is a privately owned company that has outlets in Bristol, Cardiff, Gloucester and Newport. It specialises in new and used car sales across South Wales and the South West. Matthew continued: “We have established a reputation for honesty, reliability and outstanding value for money and we pride ourselves on passing on massive savings on new and used cars direct to our customers, while still providing an aftersales service that is both friendly and professional.” For more information about Wessex Garages on Mercia Road, please call 0844 247 3181, visit www.wessexgarages.com, follow the company on Twitter at www.twitter.com/wessexgarages or log on to www.facebook.com/wessexgarages

PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES... Now that the kids are back at school, I get that slightly nostalgic, end of the summer, changing of seasons feeling... and dare I say it… a faint, Christmassy mood glances past me. Shorter days, cooler nights and – soon – turning of the leaves. I can’t help it; Autumn brings an inevitable count down to the end of the year and all the festivities that go with that. But for the first time in years, I’m looking back on a hot and wonderful summer in England. Hands up who booked a holiday abroad and had worse weather overseas! In an amazing twist of good fortune, I planned a ‘staycation’ (I’m told that’s the buzz word to describe having a week off work and electing to remain at or close to home). Well – goodness me – loads of other people come to where we live to TAKE their holidays. I’m surrounded by thriving B&Bs, with luxury hotels and award winning selfcatering apartments only minutes away. If I wasn’t so useless at housework I’d have considered renting out my spare room to tourists, such is the beauty of our county. In the end we did actually stay in our house – we’d considered a few nights camping in the Forest of Dean, or a slightly more luxurious short stay at a hotel in Cheltenham – but as it turned out… the week we were off was SO hot, it felt as much like a real holiday as if we’d gone to the South of France and rented a villa. However, I have since discovered that one of my local pubs –The Glasshouse on May Hill, has installed luxury holiday lodges of epic standards. Glasshouse Lodges (pictured) – whether 5 or 500 miles away - is my new favourite vacation destination… and not just for me. We have so many family members spread out across the world, having regular visitors is inescapable. Admittedly we are spoilt for choice about where to house them round here, but tee hee hee can’t we now show off about this place? My friend, who lives so close you can almost see the pub from

her house, is booking a long weekend, just to have a break from the domestic chores. Wine tasting in Italy? No. Luxury Spa, taking the water in Bath? No! Exquisite log cabin nestled into the side of one of the most beautiful hills in England, but only a few metres away from home? Yes please. Design expertise, an enormous amount of thought, considerable investment and what honestly feels like a little bit of magic is what makes these lodges so glorious. That - and the world class English countryside location. When you add in the close proximity to one of the most popular country pubs in Gloucestershire – The Glasshouse itself, you can’t fail. If we are now set for a decent autumn weather-wise and… dare I say it…. a few good summers, I don’t doubt more

and more people will elect to spend their holiday in the UK. I did so much moaning about the weather last year, I even considered moving to Hawaii! But by the skin of her teeth, Mother Nature has saved us Brits from drowning in the mud and just when it was about to become really, really too much, we’ve been delivered a glorious season that, I think, has actually lifted the mood of everyone on the island. Please can we keep it a little bit longer…? CS For more information go to www.glasshouselodges.co.uk
