FOREWORD I would like to take this opportunity of introducing myself and my company to you. It’s my privilege to be the new owner of Cotswold Luxury alongside my business partner Mark Cuzner. In 2008 our flagship monthly Magazine Cotswold Style launched to provide a truly up market Lifestyle Magazine for the Cotswold Region. Three years later we acquired two town-centric magazines; The Cheltonian and The Glostonian serving Cheltenham Spa and Gloucester. Based in Cheltenham it’s our passion and our mission to produce high quality targeted magazines across our beautiful Cotswold region. Last month we were delighted to be able to add Cotswold Luxury to our growing high-end portfolio. I would personally like to thank Cotswold Luxury's founder Matthew Evans for all his hard work in delivering the title to where it is today. In our inaugural edition we welcome our regular celebrity contributor Kelly Hoppen who talks about the key elements of good room design on page 13-18. We go behind the scenes of the Luxurious 16th Century 5 Star Ellenborough Park which is set amongst 90 acres of beautiful parkland with the world famous Cheltenham Racecourse right on the doorstep.(see pages 6 to 9). Finally I would like to add a huge thank you to our advertisers old and new who continue to inspire all of us with a wonderful array of products and services for our much loved homes and gardens. I wish you all a most glorious English Summer.

Contemporary town garden design wins RHS Award Sue Crawford, Rowena Davidson and Sam Evans, all emerging garden designers, collaborated to build a Bronze medal award show garden at RHS Spring Malvern Show 2014 “Levels: A Garden come Rain or Shine” in the new RHS “Festival” category highlighted the effects of climate change and some of the old and new technologies used in gardens – from a solar charged garden table to rain chains used to divert water from the gutter to a pond. The garden also illustrated how nature and leisure can complement each other – with a flat screen tv on a wall of birch poles. The garden was designed with the young urban creative “media” couple in mind to allow a “work-relax” outside space. Circles and spheres complemented by bold uprights provide sophistication and inspiration. Planting was intentionally varied, with loose alliums and grasses (luzula nivea) counter-balanced by structural box balls interplanted with stipa tenuissima (pony tail grass). Under a weeping birch tree luxuriant herbaceous plants including hosta patriot, white foxgloves and alchemilla mollis (lady’s mantle) were used to evoke a serene, peaceful atmosphere. The theme of rain and water drops was reflected in the sinuous curves of the pond, the sensuous stool (marble/wood) and the meandering decking. The painting of the decking in trend-setting grey provided a contemporary edge. The design highlights how important structure and simplicity are - the “less is more” philosophy creates a garden with visual and textural impact, which can be replicated in the town gardens of Cheltenham or on a larger scale in the manor houses of the Cotswolds. How you Begin A good beginning starts with a focused mind, and there is no better design practice than that of laying out mood boards to get your vision under way. Seeing your influences pinned t o the boards will increase your confidence and skill. Raid fashion and interiors magazines for references – a chanel jacket can be as key an inspiration as a finished room. Put it all on the mood boards, one or more for each room, leave them for a day, then revisit them with a fresh eye. Do not file swatches and samples away – keep the boards on view, as this will move you ever closer to the right d esign d ecisions.
At work in my london studio, where I initiate every design by compiling many mood boards detailing every facet of every room.

I am known for my palette of neutrals – Black, white, cream, grey and taupe. These make the perfect backdrop for any scheme.
Subtlety and contrast of tone and texture are the keys to a successful monochromatic scheme where neither the black nor the white dominates and there is a natural balance between the two. Adding elements such as the bronze christian liaigre ajoure side table, the wroughtiron Mark BrazierJones sera lantern floor lamp and the zebra-skin rug brings highlighting focal points into the design.

One Hyde Park has long promised to be one of the finest addresses in the world and, now finished, lives up to this high expectation. ”
Current price: £4,500 per sq ft “Hong Kong’s most prestigious residential address winds around the top of Victoria’s Peak, enjoying panoramic views of the harbour. Severn Road has been singled out for its great position and ultra-luxurious properties. There are fewer than 60 residences on the road, so it is very exclusive, attracting business leaders and diplomats.”
Current price: £4,000 per sq ft “This address is steeped in associations with the golden era of Monaco’s royal family and the glamour of Grace Kelly. It also has some of the best views of the Mediterranean. The most recent apartment sold here went for £22 million. With limited supply, we do not foresee any price fluctuations.”
Current price: £4,000 per sq ft “During the Belle Époque, Chemin de Saint-Hospice, on the peninsula of Cap Ferrat in the South of France, became popular with the world’s elite. Supply is very limited – there are only 15 houses on the peninsula – and so transactions are rare. The most recent sale was three years ago and achieved £74 million.”

“the wonderful quality of light”
T
he first step into breathing new life into these Grade II listed cottages was to apply for permission to open up the space to give them an open plan living area to suit their young family. The challenge was in sympathetically re-organising the property whilst maintaining much of the character of the old buildings. The result was an elegant three-bedroom home that comfortably accommodated Emma and John’s family for over 15 years. However in 2010, with a husband and three children, an award winning interior design practice and two cats all squeezed in, Emma decided the time had come to convert the barn to create an open plan living space to properly cater for their extended brood. The conventional route would have been to create two stories throughout. Instead, Emma designed a
mezzanine level and stunning full height sitting room that dramatically opened up the space and created a sense of theatre, light and space. The huge glazed barn doors, rendered limestone fireplace and fitted bookcases with a ladder for access, all create a spectacular setting, which is cleverly offset by the informal layout of the kitchen area. Emma felt that “what makes this house a home is the balance between the space that lets everyone do their own thing and the cosy areas around the woodburners.” To create the dramatic full height effect whilst 10

maximising the accommodation Emma raised the roof to its original height and organised the interior so that she could introduce a mezzanine level with a new upper storey for a bedroom and bathroom above the kitchen and dining areas. An elegant dining room helped sympathetically link the two structures, whilst the introduction of a beamed roof, exposed stone walls, and floor to ceiling doors, helped to preserve the character of the barn, whilst introducing the crisp, contemporary feel of the present. To ensure the building retained its sense of the past, Emma used plenty of local vernacular materials, such as Cotswold reclaimed stone that helped retain its historical roots. A less expensive, but just as effective design trick, was her clever use of new wood, which was given a limed effect by colour washing with thinned paint. Used as timber boarding on the kitchen and dining room ceilings, it gave the impression the building had been that way for generations. Emma uses layering as a practical, functional and effective technique throughout the conversion. The different finishes she introduces such as fabric walls, timber boarding and rendered limestone, all bring a depth of colour, texture, light and character to the overall design. Combined with a play of scale with the full height sitting room, impressive fireplace (designed by John and Emma), and flanking large sofas and beautiful table lamps, the feeling of space and size is energising and enthralling. When combined with the warm, cosy winter sitting room and atmospheric dark hallway, you have an intriguing and engaging space that keeps on surprising. Her design of the elegant new bedroom and bathroom on the upper storey employs the same technique to beautiful effect. The open rafters create a sense of drama, which is complemented by the modern four-poster bed and large floor to partition-height mirror. The light pours in from the bathroom and surrounding open eaves. Emma’s inspiration for this new addition came from “the wonderful quality of light” that floods the top floor conversion. The ageold flooring, beams, brick and stone become architectural features that truly make this newly constructed home one of yesteryear with plenty of history.
