Welcome
The end of the year is finally upon us and the madness of December begins; an endless assortment of office and Christmas parties, school nativity plays and carol concerts, shopping, drinking and never ending eating - the busiest month of the calendar year is going to be completely full-on! Cotswold Style has the festive season all wrapped up in this edition of the magazine. We can help sort out any last minute present anxieties with some beautiful goodies showcased in our gift guide pages. I was delighted to be able to speak with the nation’s favourite cook, Mary Berry who chatted to me about her family celebratory time and she has kindly given us her favourite recipe for the most delicious Christmas pudding. Fashion Editor Yvette Brentnall and photographer Stef Calleja-Gera have shot some lovely snowy scenes and crackling fires to keep us warm this winter, whilst wrapped up in luxurious cashmere, bobble hats and fur. If you are considering getting away from it all for a last minute holiday why not look at the destinations we feature this month; New York for some ice skating and serious fun, Basel in Switzerland for their world famous Christmas market and an array of culture at the city’s museums and galleries or if wanting to stay more local, The Hollow Bottom in Guiting Power can provide you with a fabulous room, all-night party and if necessary a free ‘bus ride home’! Our interiors sections, will offer you all the advice you need for lighting up your homes this Christmas and Emeline Watchorn showcases some quirky present and decoration ideas. All of our regular Cotswold Style writers have offered their thoughts on the festive season from the reflection of the Christian aspect to the more spirited side of things. We are delighted that Rachel Treweek, the Bishop of Gloucester who is this month’s Real Life feature, has given a personal Christmas message to Cotswold Style readers. In the aftermath of the terrible terrorist atrocities that have affected so many people recently, the team at Cotswold Style would personally would like to thank all the wonderful service personnel who work so tirelessly in this area for everything they do in keeping the Cotswolds safe – to GCHQ, the police, military, fire service, NHS - we are truly indebted. And of course to you, our readers, may we wish you a very Happy Christmas and peaceful and blessed 2016. With my best wishes,
Emma Logan, Editor editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

REAL LIFE INTERVIEW
RACHEL TREWEEK, BISHOP OF GLOUCESTER Susan Blanchfield met with The Right Revd Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester PHOTOGRAPHY: ANGUS BETHUNE t has been a remarkable year for the venerable Bishop, Rachel Treweek. In the last few months she has been elevated from Archdeacon of Hackney to the Bishop of Gloucester making her the highest ranking woman in the Church of England. In October of this year, the Upper Chamber rose to its feet to applaud her introduction as one of parliament’s 26 Lords Spiritual, when she took her seat in the House of Lords as the first female Bishop. It is an extraordinary journey for a woman who had no plans to enter the Church. Bishop Rachel studied linguistics at Reading University and worked in the NHS as a paediatric speech and language therapist before entering the Church as a Deacon in 1994 and becoming Achdeacon of Hackney in 2011. She is known for speaking out on contentious issues and has been critical about the lack of diversity in the Church as well as commenting that there is still a long way to go before gender equality is achieved. “I am not in the business of wanting to offend anyone, but I do want to gently challenge people” she says. In person she is attractive with a warm open face and a beaming smile. She is funny and erudite too and it is easy to spot her gift for gently winning people over. Inevitably her appointment has attracted a great deal of attention and she has been dubbed a ‘pioneer’ and a ‘feminist’ by some of the press. On this subject she is quick to point out the other pioneers throughout history, “I am so hugely grateful for those who fought for this day, for women to be consecrated and serve Jesus as they’ve been called”. Pioneer or not Bishop Rachel’s consecration as a full Diocesan Bishop was a significant moment in the Church of England history – given that it only allowed

the ordination of female Bishops little over a year ago. Bishop Rachel and her fellow new Bishop, the Rev Canon Dame Sarah Mullally, were consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Right Rev Justin Welby and the cathedral rafters rang with applause, whistling and whooping as both women turned to face the congregation, which included old school friends as well as church friends who had travelled from as far as South Africa. Reflecting on the ceremony and the press coverage Bishop Rachel expresses delight at being part of such a joyful occasion although typically plays down her role, only saying that she believed the nature of the applause was due to the fact that people were clapping what she represented as much as for her as an individual. >>>

Style Interview Arriving in Gloucester from Hackney she is clearly relishing the change from London life commenting that Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties are much more diverse than she originally thought. “It’s a complex combination of the urban and the rural, wealth and poverty and different faiths… I love that; it feels like a little bit of all life is represented here in its full spectrum” she says. Her joy at her new appointment to Gloucester was complete when her husband Guy Treweek was able to join her – that he is by her side and they are able to work as a team is clearly important to her. Since she arrived in Gloucester her feet have barely touched the ground. She cites the ability to listen as a crucial part of her prioritising and makes no distinction between ‘those who see themselves as part of the church and the people who don’t’. Her days are full visiting Deaneries, talking to vicars, community leaders, MPs, entrepreneurs and charity leaders and she is vocal about the need to engage saying, “It is important we hear from them, what is working for different communities and what we need to look at in more detail. Our rural and urban communities have different priorities and I need to understand them; an ongoing dialogue will help us to establish how we begin that process”. On the subject of negotiating her way around a diverse community of different faiths she is refreshingly upfront - citing her passion of ‘conflict transformation’ as key to keeping relationships harmonious and productive. “Let’s not pretend we are all the same when we are
not! Instead let’s work out how we come together and acknowledge that although we might believe in different things we can still work together in the common interest of the wellbeing of other people.” Inevitably the conversation turns towards the issue of the reported declining numbers around people attending church and on this subject Bishop Rachel is clear that statistics shape questions rather than giving answers and she stresses the importance of the Church continuing to build on its community services such as toddler support, food banks and youth groups that are open to people of all or no faiths. “We are inviting people to come and see what is going on. We must connect with families in a stronger way, for example ‘messy church’ which involves arts and crafts and through young peoples interests such as sport; this is a just a small part of that process in identifying how we make links with the community and our confidence in doing so.” Looking ahead Bishop Rachel tells me she has been called the ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ and it is easy to see why, as she talks about her approach to shaking
things up. “Jesus was extremely challenging of people and sometimes just doing niceness and politeness doesn’t move things on. Respect is key and I need to be able to say I disagree with you but let’s talk about it, construct a relationship and move forward. Conflict is normal – it is how we live with it that we need to address.” On the subject of conflict I mention that her appointment to the House of Lords has placed a spotlight on the debate around mixing up politics and religion. Bishop Rachel’s response is firm, “How can you be involved with the Church and not be involved in politics? My view is if politics is about the wellbeing of people and the positive structure of society then how can I, as a follower of Christ say that politics has nothing to do with religion, if religion is about the flourishing of people and the transformation of the world we live in?” She continues, “Bishops have a unique role in that they are meeting people of all faiths, ages and background and they can speak with a voice that represents people across a broad spectrum of society and different faiths.” “I intend to continue to challenge and debate… I like curious questions.”
Bishop Rachel’s Christmas Message to Cotswold Style readers is simple and evocative and particularly poignant in the current climate: “I love that we have so many Christmas lights here in the surrounding towns and villages… they illuminate the darkness and it is a wonderful way to reflect the Christmas message that the darkness will never put out the light of Christ’s hope and love. “In our world where news is often so depressing, it’s easy to believe that the world is a dark place but the brightness of the lights show us that hope and love are stronger than the darkness.”

Market towns of the Cotswolds
TETBURY This month we explore Tetbury – A Town of Royal connections, heritage and culture. WORDS BY SALLY GRAFF ituated in the ‘Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, Tetbury is world-renowned for its Royal connections with Highgrove, the home of HRH The Prince of Wales just outside the town, as well as Gatcombe Park the home of the Princess Royal also nearby. This quintessential Cotswold town has elegant buildings, including many wool merchant houses, in traditional warm Cotswold stone, with the iconic Market House located in heart of the town acting as an immediate reminder of the history of the town. Built in 1655 and supported on three rows of bulging stone pillars, it was designed as the ‘Great Tolsey’ for the sale of wool and yarn. It is still used for markets today and is one of the finest examples of its type in The Cotswolds. Tetbury, in fact, has much earlier

origins going back to the 7th century and probably into prehistory as a defended hilltop site. Explore Tetbury and you will find antique shops galore and a fascinating mix of wonderful independent shops - including fashion, art, vintage and interiors, exclusive boutiques and the exclusive Highgrove shop - all nestling between pubs, cafes and restaurants of the highest quality. Stay in one of the local hotels to relax and unwind by the open log fires and enjoy exquisite dining, with many hosting local events as well. A walk down the old cobbled Chipping Steps and round into Gumstool Hill will reveal another part of Tetbury’s history, with 17th century weaver’s cottages and the Malthouse. Gumstool Hill gets its name from the reputed site of the old ducking stool, a very visible method >>>

The Goods Shed is all that remains of Tetbury’s railway station and it is now being renovated by volunteers for future art, music, exhibitions and performances. In Long Street you will find the town’s old courthouse which houses the Tetbury police museum where you can discover the Alex Nichols Collection of Handcuffs and Restraints. The stunning St Mary’s Church was built in 1775, with one of the tallest spires in the UK. This Georgian Gothic masterpiece dominates the skyline and is a landmark from the west. Inside the church is a Gothic style gem of space and light with a magnificent plaster ceiling. Tetbury is also well known locally for hosting many additional events, including the annual music festival, the amazing wacky races, the magnificent summer show and - for 2016 - the gardens illustrated festival in April. Christingle time... Clive Burling will be shining brightly this Christmas irstly I would like to thank everyone for their lovely comments on my ‘mirror mirror’ article last month. There are so many mirrors in my workshop now that my girlfriend has renamed it the ballet school! Now, I am not an ‘I don’t believe it!’ kind of guy (although I might be approaching that age) but I remember getting quite hot under the collar a few years ago when a bishop somewhere announced that candles would be replaced by glowsticks for his cathedral Christingle service. I fully embrace progress but that is a step too far, even if it the decision was made for safety or insurance reasons. Candles evoke, without any doubt, my most powerful memories of Christmas everything about them. Not just the wonderful, magical light they create but the smell, the feel, the way they can be used in decorations and to light a dining table. As a boy chorister (yes me!) holding a candle whilst singing carols in the local hospital or dark, cigar smoke filled masonic dining rooms, the memory of hot candle wax dripping down my arm and on to my surplice and cassock will remain with me forever. Needless to say I don’t have to wait till
F
Christmas to get the candles out and I’m clearly not alone. Candles are now big business. Scented ones of every kind abound and if you want a taste of pure heaven then look no further than the Jo
Malone luxury range. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far try some real rolled beeswax candles in a decoration using oranges spiked with cloves (as many as you can) and use a few cinnamon sticks close by. It works for me. I mentioned the mirrored table and triple mirror last month and I’m pleased to say both are now finished in time for the festivities. Candles and mirrors work so well together, doubling up the light and creating lovely effects. I found a couple of stunning turned wooden candlesticks for a few pence at the car boot sale last Sunday and one features in the photographs, having been transformed with a little paint and some silver gilt. Add some holly from the garden and few berries and I’m all set for a romantic, candle lit Christmas. I hope that now, you will be too! Happy Christmas to you all. Do let me know how it goes; clive.burling@gmail.com 07788257914

The Great Christmas
BAKE OFF! Emma Logan caught up with Mary Berry to find out what she is planning over this Christmas period
Mary, for many people, Christmas is the most stressful period of the year. Please can you give advice on how best to prepare a Christmas feast in advance? It can be such a busy time for everyone but try to get organised. I write lists so I know I have everything I need. I also prepare as many recipes as I can in advance.
Should we be strictly traditional over our Christmas food – what other alternatives would you suggest whilst keeping in the festive spirit? I like to cook the traditional feast for the main Christmas Day meal and then either side have a change and try new things. I have lots of recipe ideas in my new Complete Aga Cookbook from Salmon, Chilli and Lime Fishcakes to a Spiced Treacle Gammon or have a look at my Christmas Collection which has plenty of recipes to prepare well in advance. What has been your most memorable Christmas? It’s always my last Christmas with family - both young and old. Has Christmas changed a great deal for you from your childhood? Yes! IPads and tablets did not exist and I suggest should be banned for most of the day! What does Christmas mean and entail for you? I think it of a celebration of the birth of Jesus. 38 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
PHOTO: MARTIN POOLE
What are your ideal canapés to serve at a Christmas party? My favourite without doubt are to serve smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye bread and Cheese Nutters (little cheese biscuits I make) but again, anything that can be prepared ahead!
If you could be anyway in the world for Christmas where would you be? Nowhere! I choose to be at home or with my family at theirs.
Please tell us more about your home product range and why it’s so special? Most of my range is china – beautiful, thin, white china with a subtle decoration of a goose, which is lovely and stylish. The fabrics are good quality and wash well and all the colours are complementary to each other.
Are there any plans to do a Christmas Bake Off in the future? Yes, we have a Christmas Master class on BBC2 coming up.
Do you keep in contact with previous contestants of Bake Off ? We often meet up at food exhibitions and keep up to date which I find so interesting. Do you bake with your grandchildren and what are their favourite treats? We love making cakes and biscuits together and when they are staying with us, they learn to prepare a one-dish supper to cook when they get home.

Christmas Pudding
Ingredients 75g (3 oz) butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 450g (1 lb) dried fruit (use a mixture of sultanas, raisins and snipped apricots) 1 small cooking apple, peeled, cored and roughly chopped (about 175g/6 oz) Finely grated rind and juice of 1 orange 50ml (2 fl oz) brandy or rum, plus extra for feeding and flaming 100g (4 oz) light muscovado sugar 2 eggs 100g (4 oz) self-raising flour 1 level teaspoon ground mixed spice 40g (1 oz) fresh white breadcrumbs 40g (1 oz) whole shelled almonds, roughly chopped PREP Lightly butter a 1.4 litre (2 pint) pudding basin. Cut a small square of foil and press into the base of the basin. STEP 1 Measure the sultanas, raisins, apricots and apple into a bowl with the orange juice. Add the measured brandy or rum and leave to marinate for about 1 hour. STEP 2 Put the measured butter, sugar and grated orange rind into a large bowl and cream together with a wooden spoon or a hand-held electric whisk until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a little flour if the mixture starts to curdle. STEP 3 Sift together the flour and mixed spice, then fold into the creamed mixture with the breadcrumbs and the nuts. Add the dried fruits, apple and liquid and stir well. STEP 4 Spoon into the prepared pudding basin, pressing the mixture down, and level the top
PHOTO: MARTIN POOLE
Traditionally, Christmas pudding is made on ‘Stir-up Sunday’ at the end of November. However, the pudding can be made earlier than this if more convenient: feed it with a little more brandy or rum once it is cooked and cold, and keep in a cool place until Christmas Day.
with the back of a spoon. Cover the pudding with a layer of greaseproof paper and foil, both pleated across the middle to allow for expansion. Tie securely with string and trim off excess paper and foil with scissors. STEP 5 To steam, put the pudding in the top of a steamer filled with simmering water, cover with a lid and steam for about 8 hours, topping up the water as necessary. To boil the pudding, put a metal jam-jar lid into the base of a large pan to act as a trivet. Put the pudding on to this and pour in enough boiling water to come onethird of the way up the bowl. Cover with a lid, bring the water back to the boil, then simmer for about 7 hours, until the pudding is a glorious deep brown colour, topping up the water as necessary.
Serve with Rum Sauce, Boozy Cream or Brandy Butter (see pages 150–1). AGA: To cook, bring to the boil on the Boiling Plate, cover with a lid and transfer to the Simmering Oven for about 12 hours. To reheat, tightly wrap the cooked pudding, in its bowl, in a double layer of foil and sit it next to the turkey in the Simmering Oven, from early morning. Leave it for several hours and it will slowly reheat and be piping hot at the end of the meal.
STEP 6 Remove the pudding from the steamer or pan and cool completely. Make holes in the pudding with a fine skewer and pour in a little more brandy or rum to feed. Discard the paper and foil and replace with fresh. Store in a cool, dry place.
Preparing ahead: Make and cook the pudding 6–8 weeks before Christmas. As it does take a fair time to steam, make things easier for yourself by preparing the pudding up to the end of step 4 the day before. Keep the pudding in a cool place overnight, and steam as directed the next day. Cover the cold pudding with fresh greaseproof paper and foil and store in a cool place until Christmas. You can also freeze Christmas pudding, but as it stores so well it doesn’t seem worth it! If it really helps you to freeze it, then allow it to mature for a month before freezing.
STEP 7 On Christmas Day, steam or boil the pudding for about an hour to reheat. Turn the pudding on to a serving plate. To flame, warm 3– 4 tablespoons brandy or rum in a small pan, pour it over the hot pudding and set light to it.
Tip: It is quite useful to use a see-through bowl for the pudding as you can then check the colour as it is cooking. Any leftover Christmas pudding can be wrapped in foil and reheated in a medium oven for about 30 minutes.

Style Cotswoldia
Cotswoldia Beckinghamshire Style Angela Chancellor wellies it up around the county he Cotswolds are all a flutter with anticipation; will they or won't they be moving into a mega mansion near you? Unless you have kept your head under a rock for the past few months you can't have missed the reports on sightings of the Beckham clan staking out the local neighbourhoods to various premium properties on the market in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. We are not short of a celebrity or dozen in our parts but even the most jaded of us are pondering the possibilities. Will we 'oh so casually' be bumping into Posh for yoga at Daylesford? 'Bumping into' is not to be confused with obsessively googling and stalking by the way. Cotswold Style will be very firm on this. Could this mean our crumbling cottage will suddenly break through the six-figure pound barrier when we become part of Beckinghamshire? Should we be rushing out to Bicester Village to get a new pair of wellies from Jimmy Choo or should we hold the credit cards because, maybe, Posh will be creating her own in honour of the move and then we might be in the wrong boots when we are out-and-about Beckham spotting, which could be cringey. If you are rolling your eyes at this point I salute you and congratulations, you are indeed sane. However there is a lot of fun to be had with the humble welly - underestimate its significance at your peril. Class distinction is a popular pastime in these parts and there can be few items of clothing more loaded with class assumptions. So what does your choice of winter footwear say about you? Let's have a go: Le Chameau is a properly warm boot. Good for standing around in the cold, a lot. Wearer shoots quite a bit, meaning more like twice a week rather than twice a year and therefore properly posh. Aigle are similar but a tad more Euro so views on this will differ regionally but the brand’s historic credentials are second to none. None other than Charles Goodyear
T
invented the vulcanisation of rubber as far back as the late 19th Century. We all know he decided to manufacture tyres, whereas his chum Hiram Hutchinson bought the patent to make footwear and then upped sticks to France and established À l'Aigle. Voilà! Hunter once had immaculate Sloane Ranger credentials. Who can forget those early images of a shy Lady Di peering out from under her fringe at the Prince of Wales wearing a pair of the basic green variety? Kate Moss, another beloved British icon, re-invigorated the brand by parading around Glastonbury with very little else on in the 00's giving an instant glam-over. Alas, soon thereafter every chav in the land was squeezing their not so pert little pins into a pair and their image has suffered from what has unkindly been termed 'Prole drift'. I didn't make this up by the way and will have to give credit to Paul Fussell PhD - interesting chap if you would like to swot up and pretend you generally read more elevated material than this column. On a more sombre note we could remind ourselves at this point and time of
year that Hunter once was The North British Rubber Company, which answered the call of the war office to construct a boot suitable for the conditions in Europe's flooded and muddy trenches during World War I. Over one million boots were made to meet the British Army's demand. So if you ever plan to make a trip to Hunter's flagship store on Regent Street you might want to take a moment passing and pausing for thought by the Cenotaph in Whitehall or the Royal Artillery Memorial on Hyde Park Corner. Apologies to the many worthy but unmentioned contenders in the welly stakes but we will finish with a bit of jollyness and it doesn't get much jollier than Joules. When it comes to country cute, they do it best. Do you agonise about getting it right? The simplest answer is probably that if you are agonising too much you are most likely getting it terribly wrong. Knock yourself out and have a hoot and if you see a pair of navy or preferably burgundy glitter ones on your Christmas retail marathon, will someone please drop me a line?

Through the Garden Gate As we say goodbye to another year, our Cheltenham based Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, talks of future hope as gardeners offer gifts more precious than gold… hen we garden, do we do it for ourselves or for others? I suspect if you are like me, it is a combination, however at this time of year the balance tips towards the act of giving. It is for this reason that I wanted to share with you the fantastic work that is being done by many to combine a love of gardens with the opportunity to help those in need. Enter Anne Chambers, a lady who is the third in a long line of female horticultural stalwarts in charge of her stunning grounds at Kiftsgate Court Gardens in Chipping Campden. First it was her grandmother Heather Muir who was tending tendrils, then along came her mother, Diany Binny, busily staking stems. The trio was complete when Anne picked up the garden fork and continued their botanical vision. For it is not only her border perennials that need Anne’s support but also The Lady Gardener Network, to which she is proudly giving her time. The Network, only launched this year,
W

aims to help raise money for and awareness of gynaecological cancer. These vital funds will be used by The Gynaecological Cancer Fund for research and a major awareness campaign to increase knowledge of the symptoms. Women across the UK will be united in this shared goal with each Head Lady Gardener committing to raising £250 in a year. They will in turn ask three friends to be Assistant Lady Gardeners, who will also commit to raising £250 each throughout the year. So it seems only fitting that a garden like Kiftsgate with such a strong female heritage should be leading the way with the Network's latest campaign. This involves bulbs and you all know how much I love a spring display bursting forth from that dishevelled brown storage organ that you buried in the ground months earlier. The Plant a Bulb campaign does exactly what it says
Diany Binny
on the tin or on the netted bag, which is often harder to access than extracting my new Barbie off the backing cardboard as a child! Plant a bulb and donate via text or online and back to my opening paragraph - we all benefit. December is the best time to plant tulips as it decreases the chance of picking up the dreaded tulip fire blight. Anne has been busy planting 'West Point' a cheery bright yellow, lily flowering tulip, which she says is hopeful and fresh.

Kiftsgate
So it seems only fitting that a garden like Kiftsgate with such a strong female heritage should be leading the way with the Network’s latest campaign” These will enhance the already beautiful surrounds at Kiftsgate and herald the way for roses and peonies and a googolplex (new word – thank you Daddy) of other fantastic flora to come. Anne believes that gardening is a great healer of the mind and body and it has served her family well for almost one hundred years at Kiftsgate. Family has also been very much in the mind of another high profile supporter: Tamara Beckwith Veroni who was educated here in The Cotswolds at my Alma mater: The Cheltenham Ladies’ College. A member of the Gynaecological Cancer Fund Committee and a great supporter of The Lady
Tamara and Mum
Garden Network, Tamara says, “For me, this project is very personal - I lost my Mother to endometrial cancer in 2011, so funding research into personalised medicine is a no brainer. But we’ve also had incredible support from people who have had no direct relationship with gynaecological cancers - partly I think because so often nowadays we give money to a charity and we have no idea where it’s going, whereas with this, the
funding outcome is immediate. But also excitingly - the research we are funding will be shared and could have a major impact on the treatment of all cancers, all over the world”. So let there be bulbs on your tree as we celebrate new birth this season but also bulbs in the ground as a symbol of continuing life for womankind. Visit www.gcfund.co.uk for more details.

Carpet Emporium is truly a family business run by Don D’Ambrosio along with his wife Mary and cousin John who have successfully built up a carpet business with a ‘difference’. We are not your normal carpet business with just lots of pattern books or samples to choose from, we actually probably stock more carpet rolls and large room sized remnants than other carpet business in Gloucestershire. Cotswolds Culture Susan Blanchfield celebrates the history of Christmas Frolics ‘During this week of Saturnalia…. no business is allowed except drinking and being drunk, noise and games… feasting, singing naked, clapping… and an occasional ducking of corked faces in icy water’. You would be forgiven for thinking this is an extract from a description of a week in San Antonio or perhaps a reference to a City banker bonus shindig. It is actually an account from AD140 of the Roman Public holiday of ‘Saturnalia’, a festival celebrated around December 25th in Rome family houses and one that is commonly accepted at the precursor to the Christian ‘Christmas’ we know today. The familiar traditions we associate with Christmas; feasting, drinking, goodwill, generosity to the poor, the exchange of gifts and the decoration of trees; all featured in the celebration of Saturnalia. ‘Saturnalia’ travelled to Britain through the medium of invading Roman Soldiers and the English quickly adopted aspects of the Festival including the practices of covering houses in greenery and gift giving as well as, unsurprisingly, the bawdy partying. With the eventual advent of Christianity in Europe the Church set about rebranding some of these popular pagan practices with the sort of zeal and expertise that modern major brand agencies can only dream about. Realising the futility of curbing ingrained Pagan traditions they swiftly gave them a Christian meaning; for example, the religious significance of holly pre-dates Christianity when it was used to ward off evil spirits so the Church made it a symbol for Jesus’ crown; 25 December became the Birthday of Christ and so on. With the successful rebrand covered, everything ticked along very nicely indeed until the arrival of the Puritans. Realising the date of Christ’s birth was not actually mentioned in the Gospels, the Puritans identified other ‘dangerous’ links between Christmas and the pagan Festival of Saturnalia and as a result Parliament passed a bill in 1644 to make the Christian Festival illegal. All 52 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
festivities including singing of carols, decorating of homes and the consumption of mince pies were banned. For good measure and to avoid transgressions into merrymaking, town criers walked up and down streets shouting ‘no Christmas, no Christmas’. After the Puritan led hiatus, Christmas was a lacklustre affair; barely celebrated and unrecognised as a holiday. It wasn’t until the Victorian age that the reinvention of Christmas got underway. In a relatively short space of time and against the backdrop of a changing social and economic landscape, the Victorians introduced some of the most prominent aspects of the Christmas we know today. Queen Victoria’s consort, the German Prince Albert popularised the idea of the decorated Christmas tree; Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol captured the imagination of the British and American middle classes who had money to spend and who wanted to make Christmas a special time for the family and with the introduction of the halfpenny postage rate, the Christmas card industry took off and the sending of cards became a hugely popular Anglo-American custom. The medieval tradition of decorating the house with evergreens was resurrected, however the style and placement of these decorations became more important. Gift giving became more central to the festival and as the gifts became bigger and shop-bought, they moved under the decorated tree. The transformation of Christmas from a drab affair to the biggest, annual celebration we know today was complete. Christmas comes just after the middle of winter. The sun is strengthening and the days are beginning to grow longer. For people throughout history this has been a time of feasting and celebration. Whilst undoubtedly our modern day Christmas has its roots in other
traditions, our version celebrates the Christian faith that has contributed so much to our civilisation. Despite the commercial hype and the message that Christmas is something you can buy, we know it isn’t. There is still a sense of community and belonging and in the end it is an excuse to enjoy celebrating with the people you love. Regardless of whether you feel it is a deep religious significance festival or not, there is undeniably the formal start of an inclusive celebratory mood and the excitement has much more to do with collectivism than with gifts. For a few days we all are in this together and that is what matters. Excursions and gatherings all take on a more significant meaning because it is “Christmas” and our sometimes, fractured society feels at one. Still nostalgic for Christmas ‘Saturnia style’? Participation in bawdy town centre December revelry, fending off the ghastly mistletoe touting drunk from senior executiveteam at the office party and gleeful daubing of your entire house in a neighbourly feud-inducing lighting extravaganza should be enough to reassure that the unruly practices of a two thousand year old festival are still alive and well. Someold traditions never die. Somewhere for the Weekend? Our very own Cotswoldia couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our short haul travel section. They thoroughly investigate destinations ideal for a little trip away revealing vital tips on a glamorous getaway and also provide the inside track to ensure the destination caters for a range of tastes and wallets. From the slickest city hangouts to peaceful boltholes, you won’t waste a moment planning your travels. This month we visit BASEL in Switzerland
BASEL
Basel is a wonderful, cultural ancient city with an enormous amount of diverse attraction to suit all tastes. It is easily accessible from the South West of England and represents great value as a destination for a short break. The city sits on the river Rhine in the very northwest tip of Switzerland, close to the country's borders with France and Germany. For hundreds of years the only bridge over the Rhine was here and so
54 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
the city became a centre-point for European travellers for both pleasure and commerce. Events in the middle ages left their impression. Basel was a meeting point for the Church Council in the 15th century and this led the city to become a centre of paper production and book printing. The Reformation brought more innovation. A local tributary of the river Rhine provided perfectly clean and clear water for silk dying and weaving and it was this, which led to Basel's growth in the Chemical business. The city is now host to two of the largest chemical
companies in Europe, Roche and Novartis. This little nugget did lead Mrs Jones to crease her brow; she was a tad concerned she would be confronted with a large industrial town with little opportunity to explore galleries and museums and perhaps other local artisans.... thankfully, this couldn't have been further from reality. She was not only relieved but having recently enjoyed the highlights Rome had to offer - neither was she disappointed. There are over forty museums in the city,

which are host to world-renowned exhibitions. Basel offers beautifully preserved buildings designed by an array of globally famous architects - past and present. The city also boasts a staggering 201 fountains and many provide water clean enough to drink.
Getting About
Much to the delight of Mr Jones’ rather renowned tight wallet, the trip revealed that the hospitable Swiss offer a free (yes completely free!) travel pass for the bus and tram system in Basel - such that your transportation from the airport and around the city is at no cost to you. Remarkable. Enlightened ... These passes are issued to you by your hotel and are the first and convincing part of the warm welcome you will receive when you arrive. A couple of Bloody Mary’s to the good after a brief (90 min) flight from Bristol, one will be in town less than an hour later, courtesy of this impeccable public transport system.
Staying
There is an abundance of hotels and guests houses in Basel suiting all tastes. It is best to seek out what will work for you through Basel Tourism’s superb website (www.basel.com) Having checked into the Ibis hotel (www.ibis.com) about an 8 minute tram ride from the city (actually more of a large town with 200,000 inhabitants) centre, good advice was given as to where to go for a delightful supper. As great lovers of Fondue, Raclette and Schnitzel, Mrs & Mr Jones resolved to seek a local Swiss restaurant - however, on advice Mrs
Jones observed that not everybody would arrive in Switzerland and wish to fill themselves up on melted cheese - although why not?
Things to do
Awaking to an unseasonably warm morning for this time of year, the Jones’ got themselves ready for a crisp and punctual 10.30am start. Having employed the services of a city guide (the fabulous Madeleine - a hugely knowledgeable lady who was also delightful company madeleine.wamister@vipbasel.ch), they felt it would greatly assist them in unlocking some of the cities treasures, which it surely did and make the most of their brief stay. Basel's old town is one of the most beautiful and intact of its kind in Europe. Alight your tram at the Theatre and walk towards the city centre passing as you go the Kunstmuseum (www.kunstmuseumbasel.ch) where you will find works from Witz to Holbein and Rothko (note: the museum reopens in April 2016). En route, you will pass the unique Tinguely Fountain designed by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Carry on towards the Cathedral, which is another landmark. Its square, Barfüsserplatz is a popular meeting place at any of its many cafes. A former Episcopal Church the cathedral is now used for Art exhibitions. The Marktplatz is another beauty dominated by the City Hall. This eye-catching building with its red facade houses wonderful frescoes, is an imposing structure built between 1504 and 1514 and Basel Tourism offers regular tours through this historical building.
For Art-lovers the Fondation Beyeler (www.fondationbeyeler.ch) is a must. Lying on the outskirts of the city in Riehen - the gallery's founders Ernst and Hildy Beyeler have assembled a high-quality collection, composed of late Impressionist, Classical modern and contemporary works. This trip is a must for art connoisseurs as well as aspiring amateurs. When it comes to museum lovers, one thing is quite clear: Basel is not a city that can be discovered in too much of a hurry. Mrs Jones had to be reined in and needed reminding gently that she was encountering Art whilst strolling the pretty streets and has obviously become a part of everyday lives of its residents.
Christmas Market
Basel is host to the largest and prettiest Christmas Market of its kind in Switzerland. Over 180 traders and artisans offer their goods for sale in small, rustic wooden chalets in Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz. Anyone still looking for gift ideas can seek inspiration in the wide selection and enchanting ambience. Culinary delights also abound with waffles, glühwein, genuine Basel Läckerli (a kind of gingerbread), delicious Swiss raclette or the popular grilled sausages. Visitors can also enjoy Christmas delicacies and a festive atmosphere at Claraplatz (in Kleinbasel, on the right banks of the Rhine). Christmas in Basel was officially opened on 26 >>> COTSWOLD STYLE DECEMBER 2015 55

November, when the city's Governing President, Dr Guy Morin, switched on the Christmas lights at Münsterplatz. Visitors are now able to admire the splendid illuminations adorning the numerous Christmas trees lining the streets of Basel.
Eating
There is inevitably a large selection of restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets in Basel. Given the cities location on the borders with France and Germany, the style of cuisine is broad and diverse.
Budget to Mid Range Of course you will find traditional Swiss style restaurants where Mrs Jones insisted on spending one evening at the delightful Restaurant Walliser Kanne (www.walliserkanne-basel.ch) between Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz in the centre of town. The food was excellent especially if you enjoy Fondue, Raclette, and Schnitzel and the like – ahh all her favourite dishes had finally been found 56 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
under one roof! Italian restaurant Latini (www.bindella.ch/de/latini) is also recommend as it has a really buzzy atmosphere with lots of locals and great Italian food and reasonably priced. Splurge The Michelin Star rated Le Cheval Blanc as well as the Brasserie Restaurant in the Hotel Les Trois Rois (www.lestroisrois.com) are at the higher end of the culinary spectrum.
Getting There
Mrs & Mrs Jones discovered that it was indeed possible to fly directly from Bristol via the Orange Airline and for only fifty quid return each! That was remarkable - coming in as it does as a third of the price of an economy train ticket from Stroud to London and back. The words ‘no brainier’ started to crystalise at the prospect of a mini break in a beautiful foreign city for less than the price of a ticket to London. There are four EasyJet flights per week
from Bristol - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, making the city a perfect mid-week or weekend destination. If you book sufficiently in advance and take care around the peak times (Basel World Watch Fair in March for instance), a midweek return flight can cost as little as £ 40-50. The city itself is approximately a twenty-five minute bus journey from the airport and the trip costs 4 Swiss Francs one-way. It is worth just taking the oneway ticket, as most hotels will supply you with a free travel pass that permits unlimited tram journeys and bus journeys in the centre of town including to and from the airport. Having become conditioned in the UK to being somewhat sceptical about public transport, it is fair to say that Basel’s trams and buses at least are a great advertisement for the impressive Swiss transport system! WINTER WONDERLAND Self-professed adventuress and Travel Writer Lucy Garbutt visited ‘The city that never sleeps’ during the merriest, spendiest season f, like me, you are a lover of snow, ice-skating and all things Christmassy with plenty of glitter and glitz thrown in, then December in New York is a wonderful time of the year to visit. It is a truly dazzling experience to see the core of the ‘Big Apple’ at Yuletide. One of the greatest cities in the world transforms itself into a spectacularly illuminated winter wonderland, with acres of elaborate seasonal decorations and twinkling lights, opulent holiday window displays and bejewelled Christmas trees galore, such as the extravagant 74ft Rockefeller tree and the sparkly Swarovski tree. I had a wonderful but all too brief glimpse of the New York City architecture from the sky during my flight

in. Raving about the spectacular view and remonstrating at my brief glimpse of it, my hosts whisked me off to Manhattan’s most famous skyscraper. I felt high as I stood in the open air on the main observation deck on the 86th floor of the iconic Empire State Building, in all her festive glory sparkling with colourful lights all around. The scale of the New York City skyline, its brilliantly designed grid of streets, the skyscrapers, Central Park, Hudson River, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Statue of Liberty and fantastic far-reaching urban panoramas were there for all to see. The City that never sleeps boasts a plethora of wonderful and unique experiences such as behind the scenes Broadway with backstage access to your favourite show (mine being the musical
Chicago) and seeing the sets and costumes and meeting members of the cast. American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker is next on my bucket list! New York’s hip boroughs, trendy art and underground music venues are great to explore and a great way to do it is by bike. The Hudson River by speedboat and sailing around Manhattan Island are wonderful ways to soak up the New York skyline, however the activity that tops them all is ice-skating through swirling snowflakes. There are many open-air skating spots around New York, such as Rockefeller and Central Parks, but for maximum Christmas atmosphere and good cheer Bryant Park wins hands down. Located at the Bank of America Winter Village the area is transformed into a huge

outdoor rink and admission is free – so I practised my axels and lutzes to my heart’s content (more accurately I focussed on staying upright!). Once our cheeks were well and truly rosy we recovered rinkside to munch freshly baked cookies and enjoy lashings of eggnog. We then headed off to explore a very merry pop-up Christmas market of seasonal, trendy merchandise and warmed our cockles with hot cider and roasted chestnuts. We then watched the Empire State Building’s transformation into a light show of luminous wizardry before heading off for cocktails to celebrate. Fifth Avenue’s magical mile of Christmas department store window wonders begins at UNICEF’s gigantic
crystal snowflake. The famous iconic window displays are spellbinding, The Saks Yeti, Tiffany’s wintertime fantasia, Bloomingdale’s interactive games, Macy’s magical Christmas experience, Barneys opulence extraordinaire and fluffy woodland creatures and fantastical snow owls are just a small handful of the displays. If a good Christmas shopping spree is your thing and you are a bargain lover like me, an absolute ‘must’ is the outlet village Woodbury Common in Central Valley, easily reached from downtown New York. Shoppers travel from far and wide to find Frette, Fendi, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Prada and Miu Miu and all the designer brands for an absolute steal. Whenever I have visited New York I
always take an empty suitcase especially for my retail therapy frenzy and become a star version of myself in a day with the delight of my new bargain designer purchases! Luxurious layers of cashmere, fur bobble hats and winter boots are so very on trend for this winter season. My collection was sourced in the Cotswolds using Cheltenham based designer shops Boutique 3 and Bodega. Quirky vintage shop, Scarramouch found in the Lower High Street supplied the fun furs and local girl, Jean Brown, who buys and sources from the finest woolen houses throughout Scotland, supplied the softest cashmere knitwear. Jean normally retails through specialised clothing fairs and home parties. Unbelievable! Sandra Paul ponders the market rate of top public servants' salaries in this time of austerity IS the season to be jolly… so, therefore, I will not begin with my usual ‘bah humbug’ but instead rejoice that the week of Christmas festivities is looming and I can eat all I want with no-one raising an eyebrow at my consumption or cholesterol levels. Whilst I might not be too anxious about the growth around my middle, I am concerned about the growth that this season brings to my overdraft! So the timing of The Public Sector Rich List, published recently in a joint investigation by the Daily Mail and the TaxPayers’ Alliance could not be better obviously designed to arouse anger in ‘the people’. At a time when we are being told that austerity measures will continue to hurt and wage increases for most of us, have become a thing of the past, the investigation revealed that more than 500 local authority bosses earned at least £150,000 – more than the Prime Minister. Now this certainly isn’t a new issue. In 2013, David Cameron said: “It’s quite surprising sometimes just how many people in the public sector are paid more than the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer. A lot of public sector salaries drifted up and up and up and there wasn’t enough thinking about what we really need to pay to get someone who is good.” Two years on from that comment and we are still banging the same drum. The investigation revealed that the CEO of Cumbria was remunerated to the tune of over £400,000 last year, closely followed by the CEO of West Sussex. Two of the highest earners on the list have the title, ‘Children’s Strategy Director’ and are paid over £350,000 per annum. Children’s services are the ones we tend to feel most emotional about and I wonder how they can justify these packages as they authorize budget cuts affecting the most vulnerable in our society. In our region, the list revealed that nearly 20 public servants working for
“T
82 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
local authorities in Gloucestershire were earning over £100,000. This sounds staggering but actually, The TaxPayers’ Alliance took a much broader definition of pay than just the headline salary figure and included pensions contribution, (which in some councils was as high as 25 per cent), bonuses, etc. However, if you look at salary alone, only the CEO of Gloucestershire Council, Peter Bungard is on a salary over that of the Prime Minister. Gloucestershire’s annual accounts show that he is on a salary of £161,235 and a pension of over £20k. Cheltenham Borough Council has four staff making more than £100,000 (including pension contributions), according to the List. The Council’s own accounts reveal only its CEO Andrew North, is actually paid more than £100,000 at £109,000 – yet the Tax Payers’ Alliance concludes his total package is more than £150,000. Tewkesbury Borough Council, Gloucester City Council and Stroud District Council each have one member of staff making more than £100,000, according to the Alliance research and in South Gloucester, the CEO earns over £150,000. Personally, I don’t find the pay packages for those in our region, unreasonable. We need expert, professional managers who can address the myriad of issues local councils and public services have to deal with. I’m sure it isn’t easy to cut budgets and reduce services across the board.
Weighing up which local services are scrapped or reduced, knowing it will have a negative impact on someone in the community, cannot be shrugged off. It may sound easy but their stress levels must be horrendous. I feel if they are doing their jobs well, salaries of over £100k are well justified. It makes sense that they should be paid a market rate for this. However, there seems to be no consistency for establishing a ‘market rate’ and how can there be such regional differences in remuneration? How can Cumbria justify paying their CEO over £400k while our local CEOs are on £100k packages? Our representatives must take note of the community they serve. The law requires our public servants, funded by the taxpayer, to publish information about those who earn above £50,000 per year. It is not easy to find this informant on the relevant councils website but it is there, I assure you. Isn’t it heartening to know that our council leaders seem to have gotten the message that we will not tolerate excess. More can be done by them, to aid transparency – information that should be readily accessible is buried deep within their accounts – but nevertheless, it is good to know that for once I’m not shouting ‘Unbelievable’! Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and I hope you all have a happy and prosperous 2016. Sandra@sandrapaulcoms.com

Neil Carmichael
NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD The recent anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 – the Royal Navy’s greatest single triumph – was celebrated last month by the Stroud Branch of the Royal Navy Association in Kings Stanley Village Hall. This is an annual event and always worth attending, not least because of the sense of occasion and the money raised in support of the Stroud Sea Cadets. The Battle made the difference in naval supremacy during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), created the foundations for a century of British maritime dominance and established Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson as the ultimate Royal Navy hero because of his courageous and inspired deployment of his smaller force against the combined French and Spanish fleet. Lord Nelson’s leadership was nothing short of exceptional. Today, the Royal Navy still plays a huge part in our national life; it is the ‘senior service’, remains capable of global reach, is responsible for the UK’s nuclear deterrent and is being provided with modern, powerful ships including two aircraft carriers larger than any 84 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
previous Royal Navy vessel of this classification. Against this background, the Stroud Branch of the Royal Navy Association operates to provide support, comradeship and activities for fellow shipmates formally of the Royal Navy. The umbrella Association has some twenty thousand members with branches all over the UK. The Stroud Branch meets regularly at Carlton House, Stroud and has a varied range of activities. Another crucial structure is Stroud Sea Cadets, which, of course, includes Royal Marines. Well turned out cadets attended the Trafalgar Anniversary dinner and gave a very impressive display of the process of loading and firing a canon commonly found on naval ships during the time of Nelson. The Sea Cadets is a fabulous organisation for young people to be a part of because the experiences, social aspects and training on offer, which are extremely valuable in terms of character building and preparation for later life. We should recognise and salute voluntary organisations like Sea Cadets, which do so much to provide young people with life skills. A case in point is officer training where leadership qualities, motivational skills and decision making all have obvious transferable benefit to businesses and civilian professions. I wish all readers of Cotswold Style a restful and enjoyable Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown
GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS There were two debates in Parliament recently which I was pleased to take part in which impact both The Cotswolds and Gloucestershire more widely. One of these debates was the Second Reading of the Housing and Planning Bill in the House of Commons, which will have significant impacts on the planning system and house building nationally. I was pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to this debate. As you will all know planning is a particularly difficult topic in The Cotswolds given that 80 per cent of the constituency lies within the Area of

Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is made more difficult by the fact that there is still no Local Plan in The Cotswolds. I have spent a significant amount of time working with both the Government and Cotswold District Council to try and resolve this situation and I was pleased to be able to outline this work and make some suggestions to the Government in my speech for the bill’s Second Reading. You can see my contribution on my website. I was also pleased to be able to contribute to another debate in Parliament this month on another incredibly important issue for The Cotswolds and Gloucestershire. This was on the Fairfunding for Schools campaign, which has been fighting for equal funding for schools in rural areas. Currently urban schools receive significantly more money from Government, which is simply unfair. I am pleased to support this campaign and I, along with many other colleagues from rural constituencies, will be submitting petitions to Parliament from schools in The Cotswolds urging the Government to do something about this. I am very pleased that out of more than 100 constituencies, The Cotswolds has gathered one of the highest numbers of signatures to this petition. You can also see my contribution to this debate on my website. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk
ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM What do political big beasts and Bond girls have in common? Both, it turns out, can be found prowling the corridors of Parliament. In recent weeks I have tracked down Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt, and even Honor Blackman (of Goldfinger fame) as I pressed on with my campaigns for the people of Cheltenham. First, I held a one-on-one meeting with Michael Gove, the Justice Secretary, to make the case in person for giving greater protection to the victims of stalking. At the moment the law simply goes nowhere near far enough, as I made clear in a debate I led in Parliament recently. I took up the case after learning of the ordeal of a constituent, a Cheltenham GP, who was targeted in a sustained and terrifying campaign. Gove seemed sympathetic and his officials are now working up a formal response. I’ll keep plugging away. Second, I met Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary. This was my second meeting in as many weeks, and this time for an extended session. Again, the issue of junior doctors was raised – in particular the crucial importance of ensuring that any new contract does not leave them worse off. Junior doctors are the spine of our health service and they must be treated fairly. Third, I met with Honor Blackman (aka Pussy Galore) together with campaigners from Cheltenham and the Southwest to show support for those left high and dry by the Equitable Life pensions debacle. Many are getting older now but the campaign goes on. In the Commons itself I have continued to campaign for more funding for Cheltenham’s schoolchildren, who receive hundreds of pounds less per head annually than the national average. I will
keep pressing on this until pupils in schools like Balcarras, Bournside, Pittville and All Saints’ get a fair deal. Back in Cheltenham, so much has been going on. From welcoming Google to Cheltenham for a technology seminar to attending superbly well-attended Remembrance Sunday events in Cheltenham and even visiting Cheltenham’s newest artisan gin factory; it has been a busy month. Cheltenham is such a vibrant and exciting place to live. Big beasts and Bond girls should pay it a visit. www.alexchalk.com
Laurence Robertson
LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY It has been a busy year. A short while ago, the Princess Royal opened the new stand at the Cheltenham racecourse, which is in my constituency and then I had the honour of hosting Her Royal Highness at a diner at the racecourse where I held a meeting of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly, which I co-chair. In Parliament, we have been considering how best to respond, if at all, to the terrible terrorist attacks which took place in Paris. I know from my work in Northern Ireland that responding to terrorists, who are often people who hide behind a kind of ideology not recognised by most of us, is never easy. The important thing, though, is that they are not allowed to divert us from our normal peaceful culture and democratic ways. As we approach Christmas, I am busy with attending a great many events and the day always seems to be upon us even before I’ve had time to consider any personal matters – much to my wife’s annoyance! I’ll try harder this time. I should like to wish all my constituents a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. www.laurencerobertsonmp.com COTSWOLD STYLE DECEMBER 2015 85

Dear Frank and Jo, Do the changes in IHT affect you? I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the rules as they stand only apply to people who are legally married or in a civil partnership. I suspect that there will be a legal challenge to this shortly, as there has recently been challenges over passage of tax free assets between husband and wife. I am not an advocate of telling people how to live their lives and never will be, but you might like to do two things. The first is have two wills drawn up that will declare your intentions as to where your personal assets should go. Then get a piece of paper draw a line down the centre, and write ‘you’ and ‘me’ on the top. Write down what you own, and what it is worth in each column. Then show what goes where in the event of death. This will tell you what your estate is worth on both the death of the first party then the subsequent death of the second party. In a rough sense, because there are other issues to be taken into account such as business property relief and previous gifts, you can pass the personal IHT band of £325,000 to whomever you want tax free. You may feel that IHT doesn’t affect you. Is this simply getting more and more complicated? It always does doesn’t it when we talk about tax. You know what I am going to say next don’t you, yes – spend an hour with an expert such as a Solicitor who specializes in Trust and Estate planning, or an Accountant who knows what your business assets are, or any competent IFA; all of whom will do these calculations for you. What they can’t do is tell you to do is to get married! That, is between you and your partner.
If you would like to ask Robert a question please email info@bankhousegroup.co.uk Q. Dear Robert, I have noticed over the months that you refer often to ‘Investing’ rather than ‘Saving’, what do you mean by that, and as I presently save into my cash ISA is there something different that I should be doing? Brian, Prestbury
Dear Brian, I am so glad that you have asked this question because it defines the differences between Building Societies and basic Banking and the world of financial advisors. The answer is very simple time and circumstantial. A saver is one who puts to one side each week or month, a sum of money that they do not intend or expect to spend. Also defined as, “What sum of money do I want to have, that is instantly available should I need it for non-normal expenditure?” This sum of money varies from person to person and is altered by lifestyle and where you live. Now what happens when you begin to exceed this sum? Well usually people get well past it and begin to ask the question, “is there something else that I should be doing with this money?” That’s when you either remain a saver, or become an investor. An investor says “I have funds that I feel I don’t need access to in the short term (say, 3 to 5 years), and want to invest for the future 5 years plus.” Some basic economics help here. Putting money on deposit will only ever pay the lowest sum that the market expects to pay to use your money. That return, or interest, has kept pace with inflation only in short periods, and rarely over longer lengths of time. Why? I hear you say. Simply put, lenders expect to make a profit, and they
need your money at the lowest cost so that they can lend at a rate that people will borrow. The biggest threat to savers is inflation, because if you only ever get interest at the same or a lower rate than inflation, all you have ever done is bought safety at little or no return for yourself. Investors however, invest in assets that have a fluctuating value such as equities or gilts, as well as a whole host of interesting additions to give a return over time in excess of inflation. Isn’t this risky? I hear you say. There is risk in everything that we do with money. If it’s under the bed, the burglars have a habit of finding it. The Bank could go bust, and so on. The issue is to only take such risk as meets your personality. Any competent financial advisor before he/she makes any form of recommendation, will assess your propensity for risk, and then only recommend assets to suit you. Therefore a Saver is one who is accumulating funds to feel comfortable in life. An investor is one who having achieved the comfort zone, wishes to add some risk to long term savings, seeking a return that over time exceeds inflation, but does not exceed his or her propensity for risk. EXPLA N THE MARKET Guy Shone reviews the UK’s financial and economic growth over 2015 s debate about Black Friday subsides and shopping fever settles down most of us are now looking ahead to a relaxing Christmas. My attempts to persuade our daughter that Father Christmas is subject to George Osborne’s spending review have failed spectacularly. The list gets bigger with every advert. Still it’s nice to know I’ve helped to deliver an impressive set of financial results for Disney this year! 2015 has been a busy year for businesses of all shapes and sizes. A handful of so called ‘challenger banks’ launched new online only accounts; new rules made it harder for dodgy payday lenders to stay in business and even the tiniest of businesses must now offer staff a pension. More rules brought more fear of regulation, stifling entrepreneurialism but many smaller business continue to thrive and people across the country have embraced new ways to trade. This year more ‘spareroom’ companies have launched than ever before. 70% of all new businesses start in the home and those that remain small still play a key role in helping our economy stay healthy. Home based businesses contributed £300 billion to the UK economy this year and £32 billion was traded via sites like ebay. In the face of global economic uncertainty Brits have held their nerve, got busy and found new ways to make money. Heavy industry has had more of a mixed year. Manufacturing contracted in the first half of the year and has been under the spotlight. Despite serious challenges in the UK steel industry there have been signs of UK manufacturing bouncing back in recent months. Meanwhile, there are many in London and Brussels complaining that in America they would do more to protect their firms from Chinese domination. China now supplies a third of all steel imports across Europe (an increase of 125% from 2012). 2015 was the year when stock market turmoil in China reached into the heart of the US financial establishment and unnerved the most

powerful woman on world markets. Investors were expecting Janet Yellen's Federal Reserve to raise US interest rates in September, for the first time since the financial crisis. But she held fire, deterred by the implications for the world economy of sliding stock markets in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shenzen. It was another sign of how important China remains as the world struggles to find robust rates of economic growth. Our service sector suffered a sluggish year overall but more recent data suggest things are getting better. The key service sector index (Markit/CIPS PMI) rose to 54.9 in October (any figure above 50 indicates a growing sector) and in response, Sterling rose to its highest point against the Euro for months. Jobs growth in the service sector has been strong this year – which is important when you consider that ‘service’ companies now account for three quarters of all activity in the private sector. Interest rates have turned into a ‘Will he? Won’t he?’ soap opera this year. Along with sartorial elegance another trend brought by the new Governor has been ‘forward guidance’ about what the Bank of England might do. The openness is refreshing but it has created an unhelpful media circus around every innocuous event that just might signal a rate rise. In the summer we were told to expect interest rate rises by the end of the year. After 6 years of interest rates held at near zero the media remained camped outside the Bank of England waiting for white smoke. Now in something of a U-turn the holding

position looks like it will continue well into 2016. Our economic recovery right across the world has not been smooth sailing this year. Central bankers with the power to affect change remain very cautious meticulously keeping track of which bits of the 'perfect picture' they look past before daring to increase the cost of borrowing. Inflation will be a big theme in 2016 right across Europe and in the UK - with many central banks chasing elusive targets for price growth of around 2%. I caught up with Mike Hunter, The Financial Times markets reporter, this week. He explained that with the US destined to raise rates first, policy makers in London and Frankfurt will have to “stop expecting their economies to be like Mary Poppins - practically perfect in every way - before they look at doing the same.” Guy can be reached on twitter @GuyShone

Out of Africa to the heart of the Cotswolds Paddy Moss, the new Head of Dean Close Prep School in Cheltenham, who was previously Headmaster of a school in Kenya, shares his thoughts on the contrasting festive period in two different continents Whether you are a last minute shopper, or someone who relishes the gradual build up to Christmas, it is hard to avoid (particularly for those of us fortunate enough to work in schools) the all-encompassing excitement at this time of the year. Familiar festive scenes prevail around the globe and no less so than in cities in East Africa, a region I know well following my years teaching in the Kenyan Highlands. Nairobi's many vast modern shopping malls are decked out with holly and tinsel, pulsating to the sound of familiar Christmas tunes, as store windows tempt hordes of wellattired shoppers. For the wealthier in Kenya, Christmas time is often spent on the beautiful Indian Ocean coastline, in rented homes or hotels. It would also be an expectation to visit the rural family home, often in far-flung parts of the country where roast goat might be the norm. For many, these visits would be somewhat of a reality check as they entered a world often devoid of electricity and the Internet. It is only when you are well away from the crowded scenes of urban life that you become aware of the much later ‘arrival’ of Christmas amidst the daily grind of life for the rural poor. For many of them Christmas is another public holiday and only a slight change from the normal routine of providing for their families. Much of the day would be spent with their church community and enjoying a simple meal of the local staple, ‘ugali’, (a maize flour porridge). In my East African school, pupils and staff regularly visited the charity funded ‘Turi Children’s Project’ to support needy children in the nearby village. We fundraised throughout the year and at this time would run Christmas parties with gifts for those less fortunate. Amongst these communities simple presents of pencils, notepads and a few sweets caused much
delight, as did the sight of a member of staff resplendent in the red outfit and white beard. A strong sense of thankfulness and service is a vital attribute in any child and it is inspiring to hear of the projects carried out in many schools to help those less fortunate than themselves, not only at this time but throughout the year. Whether they are individual or school based initiatives such as the Dean Close Shoe Box Appeal for Operation Christmas Child, a huge amount of good can be achieved by well-organised but simple acts of compassion. So at this festive time, when perhaps there is more that connects than disconnects across the globe, it is important to remember the true meaning of the season, when we can all be grateful for what we have and put a smile on someone else’s face. Having spent a decade of Christmases in the sun, my family and I are certainly looking forward to enjoying the glow of festive lights in Cheltenham and the chance to wear a jolly, woolly jumper once again! www.turichildrensproject.com
Whilst every generation must invariably face hurdles quite unlike those of their predecessors (the socalled ‘generation gap’), the key for parenting and educators today is to recognise that never before has technology played such a primary role in adolescents’ pursuit of individualism. In a world infiltrated by celebrity culture, social media and technological advance, young people are confronted by a faster paced life where the combination of academic and societal pressure to succeed, and appear to be perfect, is often overwhelming. In light of this emerging trend it has become recognised that educational environments are one of the best settings in which both prevention and intervention can be successfully implemented. Not only should they be fostering academic excellence but also emotional resilience in the ultimate goal of helping today’s younger generation to reach their potential and live out their individual uniqueness, even as the world pushes and pulls for them to change. Dean Close’s new Counselling and Well-Being Service will allow pupils to engage with and learn about, stressreducing mindfulness strategies, counselling, mental health awareness and emotional well-being. ‘I am…Who I am’ is a programme that seeks to value each person as an individual, supporting young people to determine their own standard regarding their mental well-being and to set their own goals. A programme such as this can help this generation to accept and embrace who they are - and that may just be the most valuable thing that any young person will ever learn. Mince Pie Brownies Shelle Duffin creates a sweet bake
I
n the words of Maria, played by Julie Andrews in the musical ‘The Sound of Music’:
‘Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favourite things’
Even though I’m an animal lover, with a great deal of appreciation for cashmere and a real fondness of my grandmother’s wrapping, I also have a huge amount of adoration for all things edible. With the festive season currently in full swing, this is my favourite time of
year for baking. Nothing beats presenting friends and family with an edible gift at Christmas and witnessing the look of appreciation on their faces as they take the first bite. When it comes to a sweet bake, I love a good brownie, who doesn’t? The gooey chocolaty centre brings a real feeling of sensational indulgence with each and every mouthful. I also love a good deep filled mince pie or two around this time of year, washed down with a glass of mulled wine – this for me is what Christmas cheer is all about. The smell of a fresh batch straight from the oven is enough to arouse my tastebuds.
However, one delicious treat after the other soon sends the conscience alarm bells ringing, so to disguise calories and make such an extravagance feel a little more ‘guilt free’, I’ve come up with a recipe combining the two together. I’ve decided to take heed from Maria by pushing back taunting work deadlines, avoiding the long list of Christmas shopping and putting the Christmas card writing on hold until the last possible moment to make my new indulgent festive treat. And once I’ve combined a few of my favourite things, ‘then I don’t feel so bad’ Merry Christmas! >>>
powder and fold the mixture until smooth. • Add the mincemeat and give the mixture one final stir. • Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the top. • Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes until the outside is firm but the centre is still gooey. You can test this with a
knife or skewer. • Once cooked, remove the brownie from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before removing and chopping into squares. • Present in a tissue paper lined gift box or serve as a dessert with a dollop of brandy butter or a drizzle of brandy cream.
Makes 20 squares
Ingredients: 300g dark chocolate, chopped 250g unsalted butter 5 free range eggs 400g caster sugar 2tsp vanilla extract 150g plain flour (or ground almonds for extra gooeyness) 50g cocoa powder 0.5tsp baking powder 4tbsp mincemeat (Cook’s note ~ brandy soaked mincemeat provides a richer more luxurious flavour)
Method: • Preheat the oven to 180°C. • Grease a 20 x 30cm tin and line with greaseproof paper. • Melt the butter and chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t come into contact with the water or the chocolate will curdle. Stir until smooth and place to one side to cool. • In a large bowl, mix the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract with an electric whisk (or put the whole lot into an electric mixer if you have one). Beat until the mixture is pale and fluffy. • Fold in the chocolate and stir. • Sift in the flour, baking powder and cocoa

Style Review
R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Nigel Aplin reviews The Hollow Bottom, Guiting Power I was once snow bound in a small Cotswold hotel, the eve of a Cheltenham race meeting in December. Guests had gone to bed on the Friday evening to wake up to snow blowing into open windows and snow drifts on the Saturday. Ice was literally broken as normally reticent weekenders and couples registered as ‘Smith’ started to revel in the uniqueness and romanticism of the situation, worrying only that prolonged snow would see us all on the Crème de Menthe come February. Since then I have often applied the ‘snow test’ to hostelries and inns where enforced occupation is a positive boon. The Hollow Bottom in Guiting Power is such a place, the spiritual hub of an honest to goodness Cotswold hamlet where even ‘The Old Post Office’ is a haven of hospitality. The Hollow Bottom is a renowned ‘racing’ pub, a living museum of National Hunt racing memorabilia devoted to Cheltenham and Grand National winners, largely down to the proximity of top trainer Nigel TwistonDavies. Inherently this is a good thing as the pub pulses with heartbeat of the highs and lows of an exhilarating sport, an eavesdropped proximity to a scrap of information that may turn a fiver into five hundred. Folk happen upon The Hollow Bottom because it’s a happening place. Take ‘Holly from The Hollow’, a fire spark of a Kiwi who’s personal Hakka is welcoming, warm and nicely flirtatious. I’m sure Holly knows how to party and I’m sure The Hollow Bottom does too.
Let’s celebrate a pub that is not frightened to admit to a little excess that brims with the concept of having fun with lovely rooms up top and their own minibus to take you home if, heaven forbid, you prefer a sip too much or two. This is that pub in the deep countryside of the Cotswolds where texting and tweeting are left well behind somewhere east of Tewkesbury. This is a hollow bottom where signal and sci-fi sorcery are scorned. Brimming ale and good grub abound. Charlie, the joint owner was well in residence on my visit. He was Young Scottish Chef of the Year in his heyday, having come via the Marine Highland Hotel on Royal Troon Golf Course, Claridges, Gleneagles and the Savoy, an awesome pedigree by anyone’s standards, promising a varied traditional menu using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible and lots of imagination. The kitchen certainly straddles the old with the new; pub classics as in ham, pork and leek sausages, steak and kidney pies, traditional Sunday lunches and steak together with ‘sliders’, pulled pork, lamb and mint with harissa mayonnaise. My travelling companion and myself shared the corn and coriander fritters and lightly spiced lamb meatballs, a
workable combination that gave off subtle flavours and balance before a well-cooked, pan fried haunch of venison, pleasantly rare with a pop of gaminess. Puddings are well ordered and pleasantly enticing; for us, a dark chocolate mousse with salted caramel and traditional Eton Mess. The wine list is comprehensive and sensible without being overly pretentious and overpriced. If you are staying be sure to ask for the room named after a Twiston–Davies Grand National winner, Earth Summit. Breakfast the next morning leaves you wanting for nothing, a ‘shoot’ breakfast was just starting to gather next door, a few ‘stiffeners’ and a day in the life of The Hollow Bottom begins again. All I want for Christmas Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park If you are thinking about bringing a pet into your family, it can be one of the biggest decisions you have ever made. This is especially true at Christmas, when despite all the adverts we still see many puppies or kittens given as gifts. Having an animal in the family is valuable, especially for children. Scientific studies have shown that children growing up with a pet will develop better social skills and have a greater respect for all living things than their peers who do not have such an opportunity. Animals can teach children about unconditional love and loyalty as well as allowing them to experience death, which is a poignant lesson for life ahead. Pets, even small ones like fish, have been shown to be particularly valuable for children with learning difficulties, increasing their attention span and helping modify their behaviour. Children who grow up looking after pets learn about responsibility and this can transfer to their own lives. Animal ownership teaches compassion, since 100 DECEMBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE
children are taught that live animals need gentle handling, and this has been shown to encourage improved relationships between siblings and friends. The bond that develops between children and their pets can reduce stress and anxiety, which can be useful for older children especially during exams and difficult teenage years. Many parents will be concerned about the prospect of allergies when selecting a potential family pet but large scale scientific studies have shown that all pet owners, irrespective of age, make fewer visits to the doctor than the non-pet
owners. Some research also suggests that exposure to animals early in life can strengthen the immune system and so reduce the risk of allergies developing. Clearly the decision to welcome a pet into the family home is not one that should be taken lightly but after careful consideration of the needs of your chosen pet. At Vets on the Park we offer pre-ownership consultations where you can pop in and chat to a qualified veterinary nurse about your lifestyle and you may even come away with some breed suggestions suitable for your particular family. Much better that the decision is planned properly before hand than a spur of the moment gift choice that turns out to be a mistake for everyone. The healthy Christmas Lunch… or sort of Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert Luciano Kydd reveals the goodness on your plate This is the month where we celebrate Christmas and being jolly along with giving ourselves the excuses to indulge in excess of 30,000 plus calories during the Christmas week. Here’s a brief guide to enjoy the Christmas lunch if the breakfast doesn’t send you to sleep beforehand! The Sprout: No Christmas meal is complete without some Brussel Sprouts on the plate even though it has become a dare to most people who will eat them first. The mighty sprout itself contains protein where one cup equals about 4 grams, lots of vitamin A, potassium, calcium and folacin and packed with fibre even more reason to eat your veggies. The Turkey: To balance out your high carbohydrate day of binging on treats, turkey meat is as lean as it comes and packed full of protein. It’s said to contain Vitamin B6, which can help to boost your energy levels which no doubt on Christmas Day you will need while not only preparing the meals but entertaining the family as well. The Carrot: Apparently these little fellas help you see in the dark but in all truth they do help maintain a healthy pair of eyes, they are another source of fibre, potassium, vitamin A, K and C, easy to digest and tasty; they are also said to ward of some cancers.
The Cranberries and Cranberry Sauce: Apart from using the tasty flavours to get the kids to eat some turkey, these babies are packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants. Vitamin C is a nutrient that helps keep your immune system working efficiently and preventing illnesses from occurring especially in these winter months where people seem to get sick more easily. Another benefit is proanthocyanidins and flavanols that is found in the cranberries which is said to help keep the urinary tract free of bacteria forming, always a plus. The Alcohol, The Booze: Or whatever you want to call it! I’m sure no Christmas table would be without this to wash down the
many treats throughout the day. There’s no point saying don’t drink, as many of you will fail to heed my warning but then again depending on which medical studies you reference, some red wine is either good or bad for you. The watchword here would be ‘balance’ whatever that might mean to you as an individual (especially if you feel light headed or ‘puking’ up your lunch!). Either way have an awesome Christmas and see you in 2016 for some more fun! Looking ahead, if you’re looking for a fresh start or kick-start to your health and fitness in the New Year, please feel free to get it touch at www.kyddfitness.co.uk or email at info@kyddfitness.co.uk

CAMDA is a small, much more affordable and accessible way to have superb tutoring of the highest standards and be part of a theatrical network, not yet found outside of London.
What does CAMDA have to offer, for whom and when will it all start? We will be running weekly, age appropriate workshops for no more than 15 people at a time, for everyone from 6 years and over. We offer first class specialists from Royal Academies (Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts), plus BBC’s The Voice to name a few. Students will also enjoy exclusive RADA trips, special events, theatre trips to Stratford Upon Avon, CAMDA trained Chaperones, talks with West End Directors and visits to Warner Brothers Studios. We offer excellent facilities and there will be a chance to showcase in the West End each year. When do the courses begin? CAMDA's First Term starts on Sunday 10th January 2016. We are offering 10 week and 4 week Music & Acting courses in January and April, then our one year Foundation Diploma Certificate begins in September 2016 in Cheltenham.
You are hosting a Winter Wonderland event on December 13th, which sounds like nothing Cheltenham has seen before, what can people expect? This will be a magical afternoon; a small festive taster of workshops showcasing

what CAMDA is all about, which is truly exciting - because performance is a passion and we wish to share it. Ellis Jones, who was RADA's Vice Principal and Head of Acting, is running the actor workshops. Two singing workshops will be conducted by Vince Freeman and Adam Isaac (finalists from BBC's The Voice). Another acting master class and a stage combat workshop will be hosted by Tom Jordan from The RSC and Alice Redmond from the Royal Academy of Music - who reduced grown men to tears of joy then emotion with her outstanding cabaret songs at our launch event. This event is for everyone creative; parents with children wanting to join in or ‘watch’ workshops for young people age 6 to 16 years, plus local talented Sixth Formers from schools and adults of all ages. Gifted individuals are also invited to work on solo songs in the award-winning Parabola Arts theatre. Tickets are available online at Eventbrite and via CAMDA's website at
You previously mentioned exciting trips for students and friends of CAMDA, please tell us more? A special day involves a show in London’s West End and we will offer a cultural trip abroad one week a year in order to deepen our appreciation of the arts and meet more extraordinary creative specialists. First stop is Salzburg in Vienna. Is there an ethos that you wish to share? One of our team's favourite quotations and the inspiration for CAMDA is from Goethe:
'Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.' We really just wish for every person at our new academy to enjoy themselves, reach for the stars and be inspired.

Christmas Racing Round-Ups Betlive Radio’s expert racing pundit Nigel Aplin, reviews the National Hunt season over December and the New Year ike a young debutant hopefully lifting her skirts, so too has Cheltenham finally lifted hers on the much vaunted and anticipated £45M redevelopment. Interestingly the trend in racecourse viewing appears to be focussed on the pre and post-race scenarios. Cheltenham has built an impressive arena dedicated to just that, a wide expanse of tiered viewing across the paddock and winner’s enclosure, a sociable plaza to greet and meet both human and equine friends. Course facing and the boxes for the ‘old retainers’ have been replaced by a new grandstand topping out with a ‘club within a club’ for those favoured with financial exclusivity; a communal penthouse offering fine dining and viewing. Moving down, the third floor consists of the Royal Box and other private boxes and beneath that on the second floor of the grandstand, an Owners & Trainers Bar, with a balcony overlooking the Parade Ring, horsewalk and course and The Cotswolds Club, an area available to those who used to have one of the old boxes, now suffering the end of an era when the faithful family retainers would lug over their own booze and tucker. The first floor of the stand provides a new bar for Annual Members and the remainder of the first floor, the Big Buck’s Champagne Bar, named after the horse that won an unprecedented four World Hurdles and 18 consecutive races. So to the racing. Friday and Saturday, 11th and 12th December sees The Cheltenham ‘International’ Meeting. Friday features the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, part of Europe's Crystal Cup Challenge, a scheme incorporating many different cross country races across the continent. The race, one of three cross country races held at Cheltenham each season, was won last year by Any Currency, trained by locally by Martin Keighley and ridden by Aidan Coleman. The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup is run on the Saturday; a race, older enthusiasts will remember as the Massey Ferguson. Interestingly Caspian Caviar is owned

“New Year’s Day at Cheltenham, a time to banish the sore heads from the previous night’s celebrations and watch seven compelling contests on the track.” and run by two charming chappies, Simon Shepherd and Angus Collingwood-Cameron. Simon founded the company back in 2000 and his wife Suzanne who sadly died of cancer this year, mainly ran it. Angus has since run the business on a day-to-day basis, with Simon providing help and support. They both love the good things in life and are happy to advise on indulgence as well as running private tastings and corporate events. The StanJames.com International Hurdle also on the Saturday is a hugely valuable race in its own right and one of the leading trials for the Stan James Champion Hurdle at The Festival and takes place on the second day of The Intentional meeting. Last year’s StanJames.com Intentional Hurdle was won for the second year running by The New One, trained locally by Nigel Twiston-Davies and ridden by his son, Sam. Boxing Day is always one of the biggest days of the year for National Hunt devotees staging the King George VI Chase, a race that rivals the Gold Cup in prestige and class. This year promises to be a battle between the two Irish
crown seekers in Vautour and Don Cossack. I think Vautour will be more suited to this track and distance with Don Cossack likely to favour the Gold Cup in March. Silviniaco Conti will once again fly the flag for the home brigade and it promises to be an excellent race. New Year’s Day at Cheltenham, a time to banish the sore heads from the previous night’s celebrations and watch seven compelling contests on the track. This year New Year’s Day is on a Friday, so it’s an even better excuse to enjoy a day out at the races, with the following day being a weekend. The racing on New Year’s Day is also a fun, competitive affair, with the likes of Ptit Zig, Rock On Ruby and Splash Of Ginge all taking their place in the Winner’s Enclosure on 1st January 2015. As New Year’s Day is traditionally one spent with the family, there will be lots of activities for the children to enjoy as well. A Vintage Christmas And A Healthy And Prosperous New Year To Us All! Claire in the County All that celebrating with mistletoe and wine could lead you into serious trouble, warns Claire Thayers ere we go again - time for people to drink copious amounts of wine, wear the proverbial hairband with the mistletoe on a spring (or don some classic plastic antlers), wearing the obligatory Christmas jumper, ideally with flashing lights for maximum effect or the 1980s wide Santa Claus tie and even those hideous snowflake dangly earrings… yep… IT’S CHRISTMAS, sung in my best Noddy Holder voice! Tiz the season to be jolly and on the whole, jolly stupid, as normal sensible people who have normal sensible jobs, succumb to a few too many vinos and common sense flies out of the bar (like Rudolf on speed), at the office party. Admit it, as you are reading this you all have a story to share… Remember the time when shy Andrew from accounts becomes a sex god on the dance floor? Annie the intern was seen snogging the face off Mike in marketing, blissfully unaware that Derrick the director is was watching from afar (silently wishing it was him). I worked for a leading law firm, who will remain nameless for the sake of this article and every year without fail, I witnessed carnage! Potential affairs, acting out in the corner of the wine bar, horrific dance moves that must have caused serious damage to those who were old enough to know better. Flirting between people who could hardly talk to each other in the boardroom, yet once a year just because there was free booze it

was an excuse to show their wild side. One of our conveyancing solicitors actually fell under the dinner table and slept there all night and literally surfaced for breakfast - still in her sparkly boob tube…nice! The smudged mascara and faint whiff of sick is a sight never to be forgotten but I had to admire her, she managed to polish off a full English. The same night that boring old Brian from ‘Family’ married for twenty years, went missing with two buxom, single ladies from the ‘Private Client’ department into a broom cupboard, for two hours… I am still surprised he survived! Do they think they got away with it or is it the fact they simply can’t remember? Hilarious… because I do! As an ex account manager, I had some seriously important clients and at any Christmas event (or indeed any race meeting) being out of control simply wasn’t an option. I always had to be in
“Remember the time when shy Andrew from accounts becomes a sex god on the dance floor?”
work mode, making sure that I got people into taxis or onto trains in one piece. I couldn’t afford to lose a client being selfish I needed their sales every month. The truth is, I am fairly crazy and get high on any social event without drugs or drink. I have often accused of being drunk but only tonic without the gin is consumed. Being sober is not necessarily a good thing though, as I remember everything and some of the sights I have seen have been far from pleasant. So this Christmas, go steady and pace yourself. Remember that with mobile phones, video and photos are easier to take than ever before and can be plastered over social media in an instant. So even if you don’t remember, others will and you may be reminded when you log into Facebook over a dry biscuit and an aspirin in the morning. Your career could be left in tatters this festive season, just like the discarded plastic wine glass and broken fake mistletoe thrown into the gutter! The Cotswold Gent Reflects on the highs and lows of this Christmas season s you read this article Christmas will be close on the Horizon with all the excitement and stress that the season of ‘goodwill to all men’ brings with it. By now you will have endured at least a month of Christmas commercials on the telly and will no doubt be considering the relative merits of a John Lewis or indeed a Marks & Spencer Christmas. Perhaps like me you prefer your essentials to be delivered by Fortnum and Mason, just to be absolutely certain you could not have spent any more cash on the exercise. The on-going targeted assault on your wallet will be at full throttle and your resources will be being stretched to full capacity by one and all. It is the season of good cheer however and as a particular fan of Christmas, I greatly look forward to all that the season brings. The Cotswolds really come into their own at this time with our beautiful landscape and countryside often draped in the spectacular ice of a hoar frost and certainly in recent years with a covering of snow as well. All of the country pursuits that form part of our British culture - hunting, shooting, horseracing, walking (as well as a hefty amount of eating and drinking for my part), become more intense and enjoyable somehow enhanced further by these surroundings. At this time it is also a time to reflect - to look back on another wonderful year for us fortunate residents of this special region. It is impossible
A
“Perhaps like me you prefer your essentials to be delivered by Fortnum and Mason, just to be absolutely certain you could not have spent any more cash on the exercise.” however to not be mindful of all of the harshness and pain that this year has brought to so many. As I write this, the beautiful city of Paris has just suffered once again at the hands of terrorists, Russian holiday makers have been blown from the sky over Egypt and still we see the endless flow of refugees from the war ravaged Syrian and Afghan regions. Our world has become increasingly complex and yet the basic human needs of many thousands of people are being ignored. It is impossible therefore not to temper ones
happiness and joy at this season of Christmas - one of the most important religious festivals of the Christian calendar - with a genuine sense of sadness and concern that the world continues to be such a hostile and tortured place for many. Cheltenham, our magnificent Spa town of the Cotswolds is famous for many things, not least of which is being the home of GCHQ. We are all aware of the extraordinary job that is done by a remarkable group of people within this amazing centre of excellence. It follows therefore that some of my prayers this year at Christmas will be reserved for those men and women who work tirelessly, to keep us safe in this sceptered isle from the evils of terror from whichever source it flows. I am deeply proud that here within our town this institution and its talented people reside. I want to thank them for their work and wish them peace and joy this Christmas, even as they keep their ever-watching vigil over us under the starry skies of the Cotswolds. Merry Christmas to you all and a peaceful and blessed 2016. COTSWOLD STYLE DECEMBER 2015 113

This Month with Kate Justice
Cantering around the County Kate Justice reveals her raucous tales with the Cotswold Vale Farmers Hunt he Hunting season commenced on November 1st so is now well under way and for a lot of horse owners, it is the only thing to get excited about when you’re looking after large outdoor animals in thick mud, sparse daylight and freezing temperatures. I’m not going to get into the politics or ethics of it. I’ve been going (infrequently) since I was a child and see both sides of the argument. Anyway, I’m a social hunter. Apologies to the purists but I’m not that bothered about this trail or that trail and hounds and scent and that. It’s the cantering about in the countryside, with your horse all plaited and wearing your finest wool jacket that’s so delightful (if you like riding). Add in 20 of your bestest mates and roughly a crate of port and its sheer bliss. It wouldn’t be the same in summer, you need hail storms and mud and misty, foggy mornings to really generate the atmosphere and make you feel like you’ve earned your midafternoon brandy. One of the best days I’ve had was with the Cotswold Vale Farmers Hunt (my local one) last season. We met at 11am in Longhope (with tinsel in the manes - as it was the week before Christmas) and somehow returned home in the dark! The spread at the Meet was glorious – smoked salmon sandwiches, chocolate cake, whisky, port. Lots of people came on foot to see us off and we hung around eating and chatting for just long enough to feel the Dutch courage from the port kick in. And that was actually a good job - the trail had been laid through Huntley woods and took us at quite a pace over some hefty fences within the first hour. FIVE people fell off pretty much straight away, including the Whip (one of the Hunt Staff who helps look after the hounds). The fence out of the woods also proved to be problematic – I managed to jump it, whilst holding a cigarette – and I don’t even smoke. (That’s where the bragging ends). But two of my comrades hit the deck. More port from hip flasks needs to be administered after a fall and

“More alcohol was probably not what we needed, but one can’t really be told can one?” depending on the measure, leaves you less or more likely to fall off again. After another hour, a few of us were starting to slow down and… well… eventually…. we got lost. Rachel had been told off by the Master (person in charge) for ‘whooping’ too loudly while galloping and Rebethan fell off, just walking (clearly too large a measure had been administered here). It was then that Sara suggested we try and find
a pub. After eventually figuring out where we were, we made it to the Red Hart in Blaisdon, just in time for cheesy chips and white wine. More alcohol was probably not what we needed, but one can’t really be told can one? Needless to say, the consumption of said wine led, in the end to me taking my (very large black) horse INTO the pub, through the front door, knocking over a few chairs, having a look at the open fire and wandering back out. If you’re familiar with the Red Hart, you’ll appreciate how much of a spectacle this was. It certainly made people move quick and the bar maid scream! Apparently we were in a little bit of trouble for going AWOL (it’s customary to say ‘Goodnight’ to the Secretary or Master if you leave the field – even in daylight) and also for riding home from the pub while singing Christmas Carols loudly and waving tinsel all about. Slightly crazy or not, that sort of day, to me, is what hunting is all about. If you would like to share your stories with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk
