Juice Refreshing Recruitment in 2012 Juice Recruitment has certainly burst onto the Cheltenham business scene recently. Emma Summers, MD of Juice, tells us a little about her business and why the company’s branding, service delivery and long standing client relations are so important to her. So Emma, how long has Juice been established – tell us about how it all started? I can’t quite believe it but Juice is fast approaching its 14th year of business. I started the company in 1998 with the money I had from selling my car. We started in Bath and built some excellent foundations from which to grow and develop the business. I am really proud of what we have achieved but we still have so much more to do! What do you feel differentiates Juice in the market place? Juice has a very strong culture, brand and ethos – it is one of enthusiasm, passion and drive to be the best. We have some wonderfully talented consultants at Juice who appreciate a company that embraces development and rewards innovation. The teams have a real passion to deliver, encouragement to be the best and all of this is key to our success at Juice. So where are you based? We currently have four offices – Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Swindon. At Juice we thoroughly enjoy connecting great applicants with exciting job opportunities and our locations give our clients access to the best talent available in the South West. What do you enjoy about recruitment? I love recruitment and cherish building relations! To us there is nothing better than a candidate being over the moon with a fresh, new, exciting opportunity or an employer being super excited about bringing dazzling new talent
to power their business – it is just perfect!
businesses we work with in a way that’s sociable and pleasurable.
Is the job market currently challenging? The UK jobs market is struggling, however, we are continuing to see encouraging signs in terms of employers’ future hiring intentions and sectors such as IT, engineering and office professionals are already showing strong demand. The REC has quoted this month that across all sectors, recruitment agencies fill on average 40,000 permanent jobs each month, which shows that opportunities do exist.
We are therefore launching Juice HR which will be a quarterly bulletin coupled with seminars to be held at the Hotel Du Vin. Topics will include – how to conduct that perfect interview: employee engagement and how to retain the best staff, as well as employment updates to keep us abreast of the ever-changing legislation.
What advice would you give to people looking for a job? With the challenges candidates are facing in securing employment, I think it is important to stay positive, determined and focussed. With the ratio of jobs available to applicants, it is important to stand out from the crowd! Ensure when you are applying for a role you are enthusiastic about the opportunity, stress the relevance of your skills and share your passion for the position. Skill set and suitability is exceedingly important but a positive, enthusiastic personality speaks volumes!
What are your long term plans for Juice? To ensure that when anyone thinks of recruitment, they think Juice!
How are you helping employers locally? 2012 is an exciting year for Juice! We are just in the process of launching our new website, the business has had a savvy new re-brand and Juice HR will shortly be unveiled. As Chair of the Bath & West Wilts CIPD I know what is topical and at the forefront of HR. I am really keen to bring valuable information to

editor’s foreword I
n the month of romance, we bring you a package of inspiration for your Valentine’s Day - from sexy fashion and lingerie to hair and beauty as well as delicious recipes, from a romantic breakfast in bed to your perfect Valentine’s night meal. And with those imminent proposals out there (girls, it’s your year to propose!) we bring you wedding inspiration with 15 pages of Real Weddings and information from the best in the business. Our real life interview this month with Gloucestershire Magistrate Hazel Richards is a story of determination. Already with two Cross Country Ski Marathons under her belt, and a trek to the Arctic Circle, Hazel has recently returned from an epic journey to the Antarctic with world-famous explorer David Hempleman-Adams. “Antarctica is well known for its ferocious winds and blinding storms – it is definitely the windiest and least hospitable place on earth,” says Hazel. Read the full interview on pages 20-21. Continuing our series of charity features, this month we focus our attention on the fantastic work being done at Acorns Children’s Hospice, which offers specialist care and support to children and young people with life limiting or life threatening illnesses. Read page 17 to find out more and how you can support this deserving charity. Finally, we are thrilled to announce the launch of Cotswold Style TV on our website. We will be bringing you regular video updates from Cotswold Style and its business partners on a range of topics about business and the local economy. Make sure you regularly visit www.cotswoldstyle.co.uk!

specialist care
charity of the month
Following on in our series of charity features, we highlight the vital work carried out at Acorns Children’s Hospice, which offers specialist care and support to children and young people who have life limiting or life threatening illnesses... What is the charity’s ethos? The need to use a children’s hospice can strike at any time – children can be born with a condition or diagnosed at any point in their lives, regardless of race, religion, financial or other circumstances. The vision of Acorns Children’s Hospice is that every child and young person living in the region that is life limited or life threatened (which means they are unlikely to reach adulthood) along with their families should receive the specialist care and support they need. This care is provided through hospices and a community team that offer a range of services that are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including: • End of life care; • Symptom and pain control; • Short breaks to include day care and emergency care; • Care after death – to include bereavement support; • Support for adolescents through transition to adult care; • Access to complementary therapies; • Access to play and activities; • Access to hydrotherapy pools; • Multi-sensory rooms; • Family support through a range of groups; • Sibling support.
The charity’s challenges for 2012. Acorns does not charge families for its services but does rely on donations for the majority of the £8m plus income needed to provide care and support to over 600 children and families every year. Local life-limited and life-threatened children and their families are more dependent than ever on the support provided and cannot simply wait for things to improve. Families are relying on Acorns to be there for them 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and Acorns needs support now. The key challenge for 2012 is to ensure the necessary income to maintain the vital services Acorns provides is generated, and the charity can continue to provide a FEBRUARY 2012
vital lifeline to local children and families.
Please tell us about your latest fundraising efforts. Acorns’ latest fundraising appeal is the ‘NOW is the time’ campaign, which is asking the public to help secure the future of its local children’s hospice by helping raise the money to fund 25,000 days of care to mark the charity’s 25th anniversary. The campaign aims to reach its target through a mix of public support, income from Acorns’ chain of 50 retail shops and statutory funding by late 2013, when the charity will mark its 25th anniversary of first providing care to local children. How can people support you? The charity understands times are hard so is asking for people to support them in whatever way they can, whether it’s money, time or non-financial donations of goods or expertise. The public can organise an ‘in aid’ of event - whether on their own or with friends, in a group or club, at school, college or work there are hundreds of ways to fundraise for Acorns - from quiz nights and bakes
sales to sweep stakes and golf days. Acorns has its own organised events supporters can sign up to, including marathons, shark and sky dives, dog walks and international treks. There are 50 Acorns shops throughout the region that offer a great shopping experience but also always need donations of unwanted items. People can leave a gift in their will or open up a tribute fund in memory of a loved one or maybe set up a regular donation. Volunteers are essential to the charity and opportunities are available in the retail shops, hospices and in fundraising. CS For more information, visit www.acorns.org.uk or call 0845 120 6892.

A dynamic agricultural company in the Cotswolds is leading the way in meeting the demands of modern-day farming, as Eleanor O’Kane discovers.

18 COTSWOLD STYLE
Our farming heritage is very much part of the traditional landscape in this part of the world. The very mention of the Cotswolds conjures up images of rolling countryside, golden fields of wheat and charming farmhouse B&Bs. Beyond these images of bucolic bliss, there is a company right on our doorstep that supports farmers not only locally but across the nation; it influences how the food we eat is produced yet most of us don’t know it is there. Based in Andoversford, Agrii is a company that is transforming how UK farmers work through its expertise and innovation. The company has recently cemented its status as one of Britain’s leading providers of agronomy services for farmers in the UK following the recent merger of two well-established companies – Masstock and UAP. The new name – Agrii – reflects the core values of the company – agronomy (the science of crop production and soil management) and intelligence, or the information provided by the company’s extensive investment in research and development. These factors combine to offer Agrii’s customers a comprehensive service to help them meet the increasingly demanding task of farming in Britain today. The merger is a story of two well-respected, existing companies coming together as one to benefit UK farmers by offering increased knowledge gained through research as well as experience accrued over many years. Modern arable production is about more
than just about planting, growing and harvesting; Agrii also helps farmers to protect the environment and achieve the high standards expected by today’s discerning consumers by enabling farmers to adopt the latest technical advances in a safe and responsible manner. Despite the company’s increased size, at the heart of business remains a respect for the unique relationship between the farmer and the agronomist. Agrii is preserving and enhancing this connection, recognising the value of the longstanding relationships its employees have established nationwide with local farmers. These factors were key when the merging companies asked the Cheltenham-based creative consultancy ArthurSteenHorneAdamson (ASHA) to create a new identity for Agrii. The brand needed to be straightforward, suit all parts of the business and respect and reflect the relationship between Agrii’s agronomists and customers. In addition, the idea of intelligence needed to be communicated throughout the brand identity, as ASHA partner Marksteen Adamson explains: “ASHA created a concept that enables Agrii to promote and own the research and development that sets it apart, while emphasising the company’s belief in the importance of its individual employees,” he says. “As part of this, the new marquee or logo, reflects company values such as innovation, integrity, and intelligence FEBRUARY 2012

while the hidden plus sign between the two ‘ii’s underlines the positive relationship between Agrii’s customers and employees, between the farmer and the agronomist.” With the world population rising, there is increasing pressure on our farmers to meet food demand. On 31 October 2011, the world population hit a landmark 7 billion and it is estimated that there will be 9 billion on our planet by 2050. Demand for food is already
outstripping production which, added to increased legislation and new technology, means farmers are faced with bigger challenges than ever. Despite the pressures, it’s an exciting time for food producers and one dynamic company on our doorsteps is playing its part in helping farmers across the nation meet the challenges that lie ahead. an epic journey
real life
With two Cross Country Ski Marathons under her belt, Gloucestershire Magistrate Hazel Richards wasn’t phased about her next challenge - a journey to the geographic centre of the South Pole. Here, Hazel talks to Eve Holmes about her incredible journey. Photograph by Mike Charity Hazel Richards loves a challenge. A downhill skier from the age of 17 and a hot air balloonist for over 27 years, Hazel has also successfully completed two 42km Cross Country Ski Marathons in Switzerland, and if that wasn’t enough, three weeks after finishing the second marathon Hazel was on track to the Arctic Circle pulling a sledge for 62km over four glaciers. “I only had a few weeks to prepare but having just finished the Engadin Ski Marathon I was very fit. I climbed four glaciers, trekked and camped out on the ice, covered 62km pulling a sledge and I loved every minute. I laughed so much,” says Hazel. Just over a year later Hazel embarked on an epic journey, in an Antarctic Challenge to the geographic centre of the South Pole with world-famous explorer David Hempleman-Adams. Hazel was one in a team of 10 to embark on the Antarctic Challenge, with Hempleman-Adams (the first person to complete the Explorers Grand Slam), and Rune Gjeldness, a famous Norwegian Explorer, as expedition leaders. “David was brilliant at working out our team’s strengths and the areas that he needed to watch to ensure the team wasn’t compromised. “At each break he would ensure you knew what was going well and what adjustments you needed to make to get back on track. Obviously he had a huge sense of responsibility for us all and shared his vast knowledge and experience to decide what was the right thing to do. Due to the altitude I had severe breathing difficulties during the expedition and it was David’s decision to re-acclimatise me at ANI Union Glacier; he used his initiative to judge when the timing was right for me to return. It meant I still got to achieve my goal of
20 COTSWOLD STYLE
standing at the geographic centre of the South Pole which I was determined to achieve no matter what.” Sponsored by Peels at Tortworth Court Four Pillars Hotel, Hazel used the hotel’s fitness equipment and pool to prepare for the challenge. “I mainly used the cross trainer, rower and running machines as well as weights to build upper body strength. I also took part in the summer fun run for CLIC Sargent, which was the start to my programme.” Once in the Antarctic, Hazel and the team practiced skiing/sledging for four days before flying to the polar plateau by Twin Otter, (an aircraft used in Antarctica). “The hardest part of the challenge was the constant daylight; in the summertime there is daylight 24/7 which can really disorientate your body clock. “Surviving at sub-zero temperatures required wearing specialist expedition clothing - two merino wool base layers, two high tech middle layers, a Rab wind suit, expedition strength jacket, four glove layers plus hand warmers, three boot layers and my face was covered with a balaclava, neoprene face mask, goggles, neck scarf and hat. Despite all this the wind chill at -45 degrees managed to cause frostbite on my nose! “Fortunately, Holland and Barrett gave me pure Aloe Vera gel which helped to protect and heal it and is in fact one of the main components that the doctors in Antarctica used to dress my nose daily!” Hazel admits that surviving in such conditions has given her a deep respect for Antarctica, the fifth largest of the seven continents. “It is well known for its ferocious winds and blinding storms – it is definitely the windiest and least hospitable place on earth. Life-
threatening wind-chill temperatures are an ever-present danger; it is acknowledged as one of the most difficult (as well as expensive) journeys encountered. “I learnt so much and now I’m starting to record my experiences on my blog site (www.hazelrichards.com).” Hazel’s journey has raised valuable funds for the charities she has chosen to support - Acorns Children’s Hospice, The Mitchemp Trust, St Peter’s Hospice and The Eve Appeal. “As a Non Executive Director at Johnson Fleming our charity of the year is Acorns Children’s Hospice who have a shop in Chelteham. In addition I am raising money for St Peter’s Hospice, charity of the year for DAS legal who are huge supporters of the Chartered Insurance Institute and Personal Finance Society where I am Chairman and Chartered Champion for the Cheltenham and Bristol Region. “Prior to becoming a Gloucestershire Magistrate 20 years ago, I was a qualified Youth Leader for 12 years, so I understand the work of the Mitchemp Trust, having experienced first hand of the importance of youth development. “Finally the Eve Appeal is deeply personal to me, having had an major Ovarian cyst operation at the age of 35. Having endured Endometriosis for over 17 years, I have suffered a number of Ovarian cysts since then; I even skied at the South Pole with an Ovarian cyst, which was fortunately established as non cancerous in July last year. Everyone who donates at my website will be included in a draw to win a hot air balloon with Bailey Balloons.” So what does Hazel consider to be the most memorable moments from her incredible journey? “There are so many! Most definitely arriving at the South Pole after FEBRUARY 2012

everything I had been through. I was determined to get to the geographic centre despite my breathing problems and frost bitten nose; it was quite emotional knowing what challenges my unique journey had required of me. The journey back in the Basler DC3 was awe inspiring - the beauty of the landscape was simply stunning! Never one to be without a challenge ahead, Hazel is about to embark on the FEBRUARY 2012
Engadin Ski Marathon in March. “The Engadin Ski marathon is a full 42.2km marathon on cross country skis set in the Engadin Valley on the outskirts of St Moritz. “There are over 11,000 participants from over 37 nations including Olympic champions at the front and charity fundraisers like myself at the back. I will have a window of six hours to cover the course, skiing across two frozen lakes
and two sets of steep hill country. It is a long day, which requires a 5am rise on March 11th full of nerves and excitement! “I’m looking for a sponsor to cover the £1,700 cost of taking part so I’d love to hear from anyone interested!” CS To follow Hazel’s journey or to donate to her chosen charities, please visit www.hazelrichards.com

Amy and Tom Hayman-Joyce. Amy and Tom were married at St Lawrence Church, Barton-on-the-Heath. Their reception was held in a marquee at Barton-on-the-Heath courtesy of Lottie and James Hayman-Joyce in their beautiful garden on the edge of the village. The sun came out just in time to allow the couple to have Champagne and canapés on the lawn. Amy’s dress was from Sassi Holford and Tom’s morning suit was from tailor Oliver Benjamin. Table decorations and bouquets made by Amy’s aunt Gilly Turner, who used lavender, wheat and delphiniums to create a rustic country feel. “The most memorable moment of the day was driving with my newlywed husband in his Father’s open top 1953 Land Rover to a wheat field just outside the village to have our photos taken by Photographers Phil and Spencer. It was great fun and lovely to have some time together with Tom on the day,” says Amy. Laura wore an ivory silk Dupoint ‘Jestset’ dress by Ian Stuart which stopped just below the knee and had 20 petticoats underneath (from Trousseaux www.trousseaux.co.uk.) She was attended by five bridesmaids and her niece as a flower girl. Mark wore a rich blue suit off set with a colourful tie and cufflinks from Paul Smith. Laura was given away by her twin brother Samuel. Family and friends had come from far and wide, some even flying in from Sweden for the big day, whilst others were close to home from Exeter and the Cotswolds. Spring heralds a new beginning, especially for the Cotswolds this year. Hyde Barn, set in the grounds of Fosse Manor Hotel in Stow-on-the-Wold, is aiming to be ‘the ultimate Cotswold wedding destination’. So far, their building work is actually ahead of target and everyone is already busy getting ready for weddings which start in Spring this year. Annie Delaney, Hyde Barn’s Wedding Planner has put a great deal of thought and research into contacting local Cotswold wedding suppliers to help her brides and grooms find the right people to create their dream day. “We wanted to support local Cotswold business as much as possible. We’ve had fantastic support from them all. “We’re so lucky to have such great companies in the area, that really do want to do their best to help couples have the best day of their lives. “NicoleJames Photography is organising a Wedding Inspiration Photoshoot for us; the idea is to showcase what’s available locally and to get a glimpse of what’s possible at this venue! “It’s going to be the perfect destination for those that want to get married in this gorgeous English countryside.
The images will help bring our website to life.” “Photoshoots like this one gives all the suppliers a chance to work together rather than meet for the first time on a wedding day!” says Sarah from NicoleJames Photography. “It’s been a fantastic experience getting to know each other and CS we can’t wait for the weddings to start.”

A new creative collaboration is offering Cotswold brides a top-to-toe service for the big day, as Frances Frye discovers.

With their shared passion and skills for helping others to realise their potential, it was inevitable that long-time friends Danielle McCabe and Martin Crean would eventually join forces to create a dynamic new styling service for brides-to-be. Danielle, who has 12 years’ experience in the fitness industry, launched The White Rose, a bridal boutique in Chipping Campden in autumn 2011; four years ago Martin established Mode, an award-winning hairdressing salon in nearby Lapstone. Now the two have teamed up to use their experience to help brides look fabulous on the big day. “We work closely together to help the bride retain her own individual style and give her confidence,” says Danielle, whose boutique stocks stunning creations by high-end British designers such as red carpet favourite Suzanne Neville and the award-winning accessories designer Hermione Harbutt. Both Danielle and Martin believe it’s important to get to know their customers well in advance of the wedding day, a skill they’ve perfected over the years in their respective careers. Understanding the bride’s personality, taste and vision allows the team to take her from the initial stage of choosing a dress or discussing a hairstyle to completing her wedding-day look. “Sometimes a bride will see a dress and love it but she won’t always be sure where to go from there,” explains Martin, who also co-owns M Spa in Lapstone with his sister Ema. “I’ll show her how to style her hair to go with the dress so she can see how the entire look fits together.”
With M Spa on hand to provide beauty, make-up and pampering, the bridal party can be looked after from the dress selection stage to the all-important day itself. Both Danielle and Martin keep up-to-date with trends, so what do they see coming through in 2012? Wedding hair is about ‘less structure and more movement,’ according to Martin. “The classic Audrey Hepburn look is still a favourite however Kate Moss’s wedding has inspired a softer, more romantic look too.” According to Danielle, it’s not all about the dress anymore. “Strong headdresses and real flowers are also influencing wedding looks,” she says, explaining that sashes in shades such as gold, pink and peach will add panache for the 2012 bride. Inevitably last year’s Royal Wedding has been influential and Danielle works with brides in love with the breathtakingly intricate lacework of Kate Middleton’s dress to draw inspiration and make the look their own. At the end of January, The White Rose is hosting its first bridal styling event, allowing customers to discuss accessories, make up and hairstyling with the team and meet some of the designers that Danielle works with. It’s a unique opportunity for a bride to get a feel for her wedding day look without having to wait until she’s just about to walk down the aisle. With their blend of skill, passion and creativity, this dynamic duo are truly cutting a dash across the Cotswolds; some matches really are made in heaven. CS

SECOND LIEUTENANT ANDREW EDWARDS RLC by Rob Wheatman Second Lieutenant Andrew Edwards RLC, from Cheltenham, commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on the the 16th December 2011. Educated at Cheltenham Bournside School and Hartpury College, Andrew then moved onto Loughborough University where he read Sport and Exercise Science. After three years in the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve whilst at university, he decided to join the British Army as an Officer. His commission comes after a year of intense training at Sandhurst, the arduous nature of which was recently portrayed in a BBC television documentary. Andrew now joins 3 Logistic Support Regiment as a Troop Commander at their base in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. We wish him and the rest of the Regiment the very best of luck as they begin their preparation for a six month tour of Afghanistan. Rob Wheatman www.wheatmanphotography.co.uk

gardening
a home for birds
Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the production team for BBC Gardeners’ World. In recognition of National Nest Box Week (14th-21st February) Camilla introduces the Cotswold birds’ perfect garden… With a mild end to 2011, I would hope to see a rise in bird numbers surviving the winter. Surprisingly following the harsh weather of 2010/2011 the RSPB actually reported an increase in numbers of coal tits and gold crests spotted in our gardens. However our feathered friends still need our help to ensure their survival. At this time of year, birds are typically at their most desperate having weathered the colder months. Of course, many of us provide bird seed and this is very worthwhile, but let nature provide its own supplies to bring a smile to their beaks! Where possible, use native plants as most will support a large insect population providing food for robins, wrens and tits. Ideal native bird-friendly trees include silver birch, yew, hawthorn and oak. Acorns are in fact a favourite of the jays; they can carry up to nine at a time apparently! Although a non-native, elders are also very popular, as are flowering crab apples which provide berries for the birds well into February. We may enjoy dining out at The Daffodil, but the bird’s fine dining experience is happily spent on a berry laden branch! Pyracantha and berberis always provide a healthy crop and brighten up a dull corner. It has been noted that generally it is only the orange and red berries that birds eat. The yellow berries are often left behind, somewhat like the toffee pennies in a certain sweet tin at home! Honeysuckle and ivy are worth growing as these provide excellent cover for wrens, finches and thrushes, who can also feed on their berries. Water is an obvious addition to your bird friendly garden. We are now advised against the use of glycerine to keep water ice free as this may damage the insulating properties of birds’ feathers. If you are feeling extravagant, invest in a Solar FEBRUARY 2012
WITH CAMILLA BASSETT-SMITH
‘IF YOU ARE FEELING EXTRAVAGANT, INVEST IN A SOLAR SIPPER BIRD BATH WHICH USES SOLAR ENERGY TO PREVENT FREEZING’
Sipper bird bath which uses solar energy to prevent freezing. Nest boxes should face north, north east or north west. South facing boxes risk overheating. Some gardeners may chop off spent
flowers, but this is like removing the Sunday roast from the table before the guests have placed their napkins on their laps. There are so many seeds to be eaten in the heads of faded blossoms in a border, and I leave cornflowers, asters and sunflowers for as long as possible. Like 95.2 per cent of gardens (according to the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch 2011) I have regular visits from blue tits to our Cheltenham garden. The biggest thrill to me though is a visit from the green woodpecker and with this bird only spotted in 2.7 per cent of gardens in the 2011 survey, I consider myself to be very lucky! An area of lawn is attractive to ant eating woodpeckers, but also to the worm loving blackbirds and thrushes. Your birds will thank you for not using pesticides and other chemicals. Between 1979 and 1999, it was estimated that ten different bird species declined by 10 million breeding individuals, thought to have been due to the pesticide induced loss of plants and invertebrates on which birds feed. Instead of reaching for the slug pellets to protect your hostas, encourage your local thrushes and they will dispose of your snails, especially if you supply a paved area where they can smash the shells. (Grit around the base of your hosta will take the pressure of sole responsibility away from Mr Thrush). Despite the mass use of pesticides and the loss of natural habitats over the years, it is good to see that last month the RSPB established an ambitious new project near Peterborough which sees 14 nature friendly farmers come together to benefit our birds. They will leave unharvested crops to feed birds and supply nectar rich plots to encourage insects. Many individual farms already work in this way, including here in The Cotswolds. Perhaps on a smaller scale we can take this as inspiration for our gardens. CS

Thomas Legal Group – the best property lawyers in the Cotswolds
Q & A FORUM We have an alleyway at the back of our house that is not shown to be owned by anybody in particular in our deeds. One of our neighbours persistently blocks the entrance to the alley, so we can’t take delivery of large items. We use it far more than any of our neighbours. What action can we take? Although you say your deeds show that you do not own the alleyway, it is worth rereading these, as they may contain rights of usage to the alleyway. If so, then any prevention cannot be justified and a court injunction may be obtained ordering your neighbour to stop blocking your right of way. Even if your deeds do not specify any formal right, you may still be able to establish a legal right through prior “established” use of the passageway. You should consult your solicitor without further delay to assert your rights. In the first case, they could write a formal letter to your neighbour asking them to stop blocking your access, which could well do the trick.

The Cotswolds’ hidden gem
Obsidian Showroom Manager Gary Moores explains how their award-winning team can create your dream kitchen or bathroom... If you are looking for a new kitchen or bathroom in the Cotswolds you are sure to have come across Obsidian. Marvelled in the latest retail press as ‘the best showroom outside of the M25’, it is certainly worth travelling for. Based in the regency town of Cheltenham their purpose built three-storey showroom offers 600 square meters of over 25 kitchen displays and 40 bathroom options. Product knowledge is also never far away with designers and experts on hand to offer you the best advice in the business. There are seven designers in the award-winning Obsidian team and they are proud to offer a bespoke design service, covering everything from site visits to final presentations. They offer everything from the best in 3-D design to hand drawn design perspectives and FEBRUARY 2012
picture boards. The designers are encouraged to be highly creative yet practical and understanding. Their continuous training takes them all over the world to make sure that they are up with the latest trends in product and style in a constantly changing market. A new kitchen or bathroom can be a stressful and often confusing task from the design to the installation. At Obsidian they manage the entire project for you so there is no need to worry about sourcing plumbers, electricians and builders. This is all done for you by their team who manage the whole process. All you have to do is choose your style and products and decide where to put them. Many still want to manage the project themselves but this is not a problem either as they will work with your chosen
fitters, providing accurate scale plans and guiding them with the installation when necessary. Obsidian is a family run business and is in its 158th year of trade, something that Managing Director and sixth generation Paul Bence is extremely proud of. “We offer a very special product and this is why we have worked with some of the best designers and architects in the country. We work with the customer and client to get the result and finish they desire.” CS Obsidian can be found at 41-47 Fairview Road in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. how to create a... French vintage interior

interiors
We asked interiors expert Anthony and Karen Cull, from Anton and K Decorative Living in Winchcombe, how to bring together a mix of one-off pieces and vintage home accessories to create the very sophisticated French chateau look that we all love...
FURNITURE... sourcing old and authentic pieces preferably with a time worn look with original paint and patinas from the lightest to the darkest shades. The magic ingredients would be a eclectic mix of gorgeous decorative armoires, curvaceous console tables sitting happily with industrial zinc café chairs under elegant antique crystal chandeliers, gilt foxed mirrors hung in harmony with battered French leather chairs worn with centuries of use.
THE FRENCH KITCHEN... is arguably the most important room in the home. A large understated fruit wood or pine scrubbed top country Farmhouse table is a must. Food can be served on old white country china, wine can be drunk from one off antique glasses. It doesn’t matter if it’s not all matching - create your very own quirky and simple look. The French kitchen also usually houses a buffet or armoire often finished with chicken wire for a rustic country feel. Fill it with a collection of country earthenware tableware, pottery, plates dishes and bowls, cutlery and glasses. Add some freestanding furniture to create a relaxed informal attitude.
COLOURS WE LOVE... we always look out for are gently faded neutrals usually paired down chalky colours such as grey, linen, stone and white. They are even more charming if the pieces look as if they have had a interesting previous history.
FABRICS WE LOVE... fabrics which create a relaxed feel are faded Toile de Jouy, antique linens and stripy ticking; all the more interesting again if they have been well used and well loved.
THE FRENCH LOOK... is a look which evolves over time, a look which comes with years of patience and scouring antique shops, markets and vintage fairs, searching for unique one-off pieces to add to your collection. making your home unique.
About Anton & K... owned and run by Karen and Antony Cull, who have been involved with collecting and sourcing antiques for houses and clients for the past 20 years. Anton & K Decorative Living is a lifestyle shop selling a eclectic mix of old authentic pieces. Their focus is on 18th and 19th century French and European and one-off antique pieces, all with their trademark style of faded grandeur. Cheltenham Design Festival
design means business
Design is not just for the image conscious. Eleanor O’Kane finds some inspiring business leaders who will take the stage at the forthcoming Cheltenham Design Festival. What does the word ‘design’ conjure up for you? Models striding down catwalks in haute-couture fashion at London Fashion Week? Uncomfortable-looking, contemporary furniture? Maybe a striking poster or a painting that has caught your eye recently? While many believe design is only for those who want to appear at the cutting edge, the reality is that the fruits of creativity are everywhere, often when you least expect it. This page and indeed this entire magazine has been carefully designed to make your reading experience more enjoyable, the fonts carefully chosen, the amount of white space decided upon to enhance the article’s readability. If you’re sitting in a chair right now, hopefully it’s been sufficiently well-designed to make your reading experience a comfortable one. Design is all around us, often when we are least aware of it. This April, the Cheltenham Design Festival will celebrate many forms of design across three days of events at the Parabola Arts Centre from 20 April. The events will encompass all areas of creativity, from education and learning to engineering, industrial design and architecture. Revolving around the theme ‘Who’s designing the future?’ the Festival has been attracting an impressive line-up. For those who have a creative streak, there will be a host of events to inspire our budding designers and inventors of tomorrow while for the business minded it’s a great opportunity to come and listen to those who have put creative thinking at the heart of their own successful careers. The charitable trust behind the event, FEBRUARY 2012
the Cheltenham Design Foundation, is keen to show that creative thinking is something that benefits all our lives, even if we do not think of ourselves are particularly creative individuals. Being able to think creatively about problems benefits all of us, in all stages of our lives. In the current economic climate, being able to bring a creative approach to business is a definite advantage. Among the inspirational figures speaking at the event in April are the designer Paul Priestman, who co-founded the design group Priestmangoode, which specialises in product, transport and environmental design. In 2010 Priestman formed part of David Cameron’s trade delegation to China, recognising the important contribution he makes to British industry. Another person flying the flag for British innovation is the inventor and eco-pioneer Ed Douglas Miller, who
appeared on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire in autumn 2011. In 1996 Miller set up his company Remarkable, which recycles materials and turns them into useful objects such as pencils and cups in a UK-based factory. Since its launch, Remarkable has picked up a host of design and environmental awards. Miller himself has been named UK Inventor of the Year and the company’s products featured in such outlets as Waitrose and Paperchase. Budding entrepreneurs might also be interested in hearing more from inventor Mark Champkins, who launched his company Concentrate in 2002. A successful Dragon’s Den participant, he gained an investment from Dragon Peter Jones after appearing on the TV show. Champkins’ company designs products that help children to concentrate at school, bringing an innovative eye to otherwise everyday products such as lunchboxes and stationery. Now the inventor-in-residence at the Science Museum in London, he has also recently appeared on children’s television show Blue Peter inspiring the inventors of tomorrow.

hidden gems of the Cotswolds
decisions, decisions In his series of diaries, Heart presenter Niall Foster finds himself facing some big decisions this month...
Niall Foster presents Drive time daily from 16.00 – 19.00 on Heart 102.4. Available on 102.4FM, 103FM, Digital and online at heart.co.uk
FEBRUARY 2012
I loathe having to make decisions, and whilst I am not exactly sure how it happened, February seems to have become the month when I am confronted with the need to make a few; big ones. Decisions that will have repercussions at least throughout the rest of the year. Choices that I have managed to ignore throughout the excesses of December and shelve during the frugality of January now need addressing. The first decision is the one that will have the biggest financial impact. Not for me the pleasurable rush of endorphins that I have heard accompanies spending for some; I am more of a hoard it and count it type of person when it comes to money, yet the state of the household motorised transport is a concern. Put more simply, myself and the other half are the owners of two rapidly ageing and thirsty cars that are long past the stage at which they should have been replaced. As a train commuter and a bicycle lover the very subject of cars fills me with dread. If I could not own one, I would, but with two children to transport and a job that occasionally requires me to pitch up at odd hours it is a necessity. And as I have almost resolved to make a change I find I am merely opening the door to a barrage of related decisions such as make, model, engine size, fuel type etc. There are fewer things harder to motivate yourself to do, than research a subject that holds little or no interest for you.
Slightly less significant financially, yet perhaps more important in terms of happiness and well being, is the question of where and when to holiday this year. Now that the family is tied to travelling in the school holidays we would have needed to have booked in 1982 to get the best deals for this summer, so as we clearly haven’t, we need to choose, and soon. I have made one visit to a travel agent to date and after showing a tentative interest in one destination I was asked how many times I was planning to go swimming during the break and what I would like to eat for my in flight meal! Those are just two of the big ones. I also have a daughter who turns five at the end of this month and who I discover is now too old for the soft play, bouncy castle type party and yet not quite up to the cinema and meal with a few select friends type party. What comes in between? This winter has also seen a few tiny spots of damp appear on our hallway ceiling, which I am told presents a perfect opportunity to fully decorate not just the hallway, but the stairs and living room as well. And if we are decorating, we may as well replace the wendy house sized contraption sitting in the living room that we call a television. My preferred tactic during these conversations is to stare blankly into space, muttering phrases that include the words ‘uncertain times’ and ‘financial climate’. I am hoping this will continue working for now, or I may not reach March with my finances or indeed my sanity intact. CS

WITH FASHION EDITOR JANE GARNER
If you’re a man reading this page because you’re wondering whether the love of your life might like lingerie for Valentine’s Day, pay close attention... If you’re the lucky lady in question, pass him this copy of Cotswold Style immediately! Women buying underwear for themselves have a long checklist of requirements that must be satisfied. Fit should come first, fabric and colour are crucial, but so is the styling. Most of all, she wants to buy something she can wear and enjoy. A man buying for a woman tends to focus on his favourite colour and whether he will be pleased by his choice! Impress her this spring with your knowledge of lingerie trends. If Valentine’s Day means red to you, buy her one of the latest hot pinks or coral shades. Be daring and surprise her with an offbeat grey, mauve or khaki, or perhaps one of the new blues? Lingerie kicks off the year with über feminine looks – with chocolate box bows, translucent tulles and sleek satins. Colours are powdery pale or gleefully bold. There are botanical prints, retro shapes from the Fifties and Sixties, and wonderful new shapewear (but a man risks a great deal buying THAT for his Valentine!)... Don’t forget, too, that there are easier options. A pretty chemise makes a great gift, as do loungewear and luxurious robes - and the sizing is so much easier to get right. FEBRUARY 2012

Romantic lengths, big volume and vintage up do’s will ensure you impress this Valentine’s Day... Valentine’s Day - whether you’re trying to impress him, woo him, or simply make the effort for yourself, it’s a day to experiment with a new look. Loose romantic waves couldn’t be any more appropriate for Valentine’s Day. Blow-dry your hair with a round brush to create volume and use GHD’S or a curling wand to add loose waves. If you’re feeling sophisticated, try a dramatic and sexy up do, remember to roughen it up a little for that hot look; a great option if you have a fantastic outfit to show off. If you’re normally a straight and sleek kind of girl try a tousled do. Just plait your hair, leave it in for a few hours and then shake it loose. For laid back glamour, leave your hair natural and just add some curling action to the very ends of your locks. Pin one side back to add a vintage element. Try a cool and modern twist on Valentine’s hair with plait detailing. A fish tail plait to the side of your head is ideal and will avoid a plait looking too cutsey. Let your hair fall around your face to give a relaxed sultry feel. Experiment with some tight and bouncy Marilyn Monroe curls, for extra sparkle add a crystal slide. This bombshell look is fun and bound to get you noticed. However you decide to spend this Valentine’s Day follow these tips from Laura Leigh Hairdressing and you will be sure to meet your perfect match. If you struggle with your hair, just want to relax, or are simply short of time, all these looks can be created at Laura Leigh Hairdressing. Call 01242 530598 to book an appointment.

Dr John Parr BDS MSc, Dr Chris Barley BDS & Dr Duncan Powell BDS, from Regency House Dental Practice, Cheltenham, give their expert advice on keeping your teeth and gums healthy...
To arrange your free initial dental consultation at the Regency House Dental Practice call 01242 260009 now. www.regencyhousedentalpractice.co.uk FEBRUARY 2012
Regular visits to the dentist are the best way to prevent future dental problems. But many people have mixed feelings about this routine visit to the dentist. Dr John Parr, Dr Chris Barley BDS & Dr Duncan Powell BDS at Regency House Dental Practice strive to make the experience as enjoyable as possible and the dental team is passionate about providing a family friendly practice in elegant surroundings. “We are a relaxed practice that believes in providing a high quality of dental care within a plan at affordable prices. Members’ children receive free routine dental care up to the age of 18,” says Dr Parr and his team. “It is important for people to take regular trips to the dentist; it is of vital importance to maintain the health of the teeth and gums. There is increasing evidence for a link between gum health and heart disease as well as other health care issues.” For those nervous patients, the dentist’s chair can seem like a fear they can’t overcome. But the dentists at Regency House Dental Practice have some advice. “For nervous patients the most important aspect is for care to be delivered in a relaxed environment, with time being given to address each patient’s individual concerns. We strive to provide such an environment that will put our patients at ease as soon as they walk through the door.” The dental team is committed to making patients feel comfortable and exceeding their expectations when it comes to customer service. They aim to show that dental treatment can be a positive experience with real health and cosmetic benefits. Regency House Dental Practice is also
very much a family friendly practice and welcomes young patients to get them used to visiting the dentist early in life. The team welcome children as young as two-years-old who are usually happy to let the dentists have a quick ‘count’ of their teeth. At this time the dental team can reinforce the importance of diet and oral hygiene with parents. The dentists at Regency House emphasise that regular visits to the hygienist are also a vital part of oral health treatment to make sure that teeth and gums stay as healthy as possible. “All of our patients receive a clean and polish of their teeth as part of their routine check up. Further treatment is occasionally required in the case of active gum disease from the dentist or our dental hygienist,” says Dr Parr. Regency House Dental Practice offers a comprehensive package of treatments from family dental care to teeth whitening, white fillings and cosmetic dentistry. The dental team offers veneers which are suitable for patients who have good overall dental health and who wish to improve their smile by enhancing the colour and shape of their front teeth. White fillings and bleaching treatments are also offered to improve dental appearance. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, dental health is all the more important as we get up close and personal with loved ones. A fresh breath and great smile go a long way towards making a goodnight kiss more enjoyable. “The best way to maintain fresh breath is to reduce the risk of gum disease by cleaning regularly and well, with an emphasis on interdental cleaning and seeing a dental professional regularly to ensure excellent dental health,” says Dr Parr. DEAR DOCTOR
Dr Vicky Blackburn has been a GP in Gloucestershire for 15 years. She is also a mother-of-three children (including twins). She is a frequent contributor to magazines, and has a regular phone-in on BBC Radio Gloucestershire. She has a specialist interest in women’s health, family medicine, pregnancy and parenting problems... Dear readers, if your home is anything like mine, the New Year resolutions have been forgotten. We have stumbled blindly into a routine of school/work and quiet weekends after the social whirl that was Christmas. It is the routine that one dreads, but oddly, it is the routine that children crave and allows them to flourish. One resolution we have managed to keep is the ‘reading time’ we made room for over the Christmas break. My children were rather reluctant readers: the girls were more enthusiastic than the boy. The girls seemed to like the ‘peace and quiet’ that lying in bed with a book brings. My son seemed to fight it, distracted by almost anything and everything. Luckily it all changed with ‘Horrible Histories’! The gruesome facts and historical tales tickled his sense of humour and gave him a love of books that (thankfully) has been sustained. It is National Storytelling week until Febuary 4th. The key to getting your child to read is to read to them. Once books become fun, they are then easily picked up and played with. If your child shows no interest, try reading at different times of the day, or if they are creative, suggest they turn their drawings or doodles into a book ( easy to do with scissors and a stapler). January and February are all about planning: booking that holiday, looking forward to what the year has to offer. Many children ( and parents) will be looking at school changes in 2012. The questions this week relate to children’s anxieties and coping with changes. If you have any questions about your children’s routine, behaviour or health, or any health questions about yourself or others, please write to me c/o editor@stylemagazines.co.uk FEBRUARY 2012
WITH DR VICKY BLACKBURN Q: ‘BIG SCHOOL’ WORRIES My daughter will start secondary school later this year and I am worried how she will cope. Her primary school is a small village school with less than 100 pupils. Her secondary school will have over 100 pupils in her year. She is quite a timid child and I’m worried she may not make friends quickly, or may be bullied. A: Thank you for you for your letter. Firstly, remember that you are not alone in these worries. Most parents have concerns about whether their child will cope either socially or academically at their new schools. Secondly, be aware that secondary schools are well prepared for this transition phase and will be doing all that they can to help your daughter to settle and be happy. Teachers are trained to look out for concerning behaviour and they will be watchful. It is certainly worth mentioning your concerns to your daughter’s new form tutor. As a parent it is important that you put your own worries aside, and focus on your daughter’s needs. Make it clear that you are there to support her and always free to talk about problems at school. Reassure her that you will intervene at school (but only) if she requests help. At home try and boost her confidence. Make sure she has the ‘right’ shoes, bag and haircut for her new school. Try and keep some continuity with old friends or out-of-school activities. It really does help your daughter if she has a support network of friends and family outside school, to help whilst she finds her support network inside school.
Q: SPOTS My nephew has very bad acne spots on his face. He is due to start at University in October, and has come to me. I do not know what to tell him! Please help! A: Don’t feel annoyed he has asked you for help; feel flattered! The good news is that there is lots he can do in the next few weeks which should make a difference. Firstly advise him on his diet. Teenage boys usually have fat-filled diets of greasy fast food. Advise him to eat more vegetables and fruit and to drink more water. If he smokes advise him to cut down. Next advise him about keeping his skin clean: washing twice daily with warm water and a mild soap. He may have tried the over-the-counter antibacterial washes and spot creams that are available. The washes tend to dry out the skin and can cause redness and inflammation if used rigorously. Acne is caused by a combination of oily skin and bacterial overgrowth. In girls hormonal manipulation with a contraceptive pill can be used. Advise your nephew to see his GP who can prescribe antibiotics. If antibiotics do not work, his GP may refer him to a dermatologist who has stronger treatments that he can try. CS Dr Vicky Blackburn MBBS DRCOG DFFP runs a private GP service on Saturday mornings at Nuffield Hospital Cheltenham. To make an appointment please call 07810 002 446. For further information please contact Nuffield Health Cheltenham Hospital on 01242 246542, email enquiries@nuffieldhealth.com or visit www.nuffieldhealth.com

Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, CEO of The Gloucestershire Chamber of Commerce asks two local companies to explain how they’ve raised their company profiles... A New Year has begun and it’s the time many of us set ourselves resolutions. We know it’s never an easy fix, it takes commitment to get the right response. The same goes with raising the profile of your business. Often it is about taking advantage of situations, thinking about what is important to your client group or potential customers. A ‘one-off ’ doesn’t work unless you get some kind of celebrity endorsement! Not that easy. Here are five suggestions for raising your profile and making the best of your opportunities. “You will need to use multiple methods and not be too disappointed if you don’t get quick wins immediately. We have asked a couple of Chamber members to share their thoughts on punching above your weight to attract new business or win bigger clients,” says Chamber Chief Executive Suzanne Hall-Gibbins. 1 - Awards; competitions and sponsorship: enter local, regional and national awards. You can also sponsor events/awards to get your name and profile out there. Awards are free to enter. It takes time to write a great entry but try and think what the judges are looking for; see who has won in the past, and maybe ask them. Let people know if you win or were selected, it’s a great opportunity to get in touch with people. Congratulate your clients if they win. You could also have your own awards and competitions. They don’t have to be big but they are a way to recognise your clients and engage with prospective clients. Sponsorship comes at a cost so make sure you get the right event or award and that you follow up all activity.
2 - Video footage: did you know, if you added some video footage to your website it can boost your Google ratings by at least 30 per cent. I’m not talking about remaking Avatar, but a short, creative video, two minutes in duration. Video is very versatile - post it on your website homepage, add it to your Facebook Business Profile, upload it onto YouTube. 3 - Social media: LinkedIn is a very powerful tool used correctly; why not look FEBRUARY 2012
WITH SUZANNE HALL-GIBBINS through your connection’s connections and see if they have any appropriate contacts that you could be introduced to? Promote yourself and your business on twitter, facebook etc; give helpful advice and promote others. Use Twitter for quick news and promotions and expand with a blog. 4 - Charities/voluntary organisations and committees: give something back to the community. Don’t do it because of what you might get from it but often you will meet interesting people and it can bring you in contact with people you would never have had the opportunity to meet. Tell people what you are up to, not in a self-promoting way but help the charity to raise its profile.
5 - Media – local, regional and national media are always looking for good news stories. Which trade magazines do your clients or prospective clients read. Let the media know you are around, tell them your news (or get a PR agency to help). Not just print media but also radio, become one of the local experts on things. Have you thought about using some of your marketing budget to write a column or sponsor a feature? Support is around for companies that need to look at marketing through the High Growth Coaching programme where a specialised coach can support a company. Please call the Chamber office (01242 308030) to find out more. Simon Reichwald, Director of Bright Futures, (graduate recruitment specialists) has taken a fresh approach to raising the company’s profile. Where some companies might be protective about what they know, Bright Futures is sharing their knowledge to gain clients and industry following. “Business should take a ‘give to get’ approach. We are proactive about sharing our knowledge of the graduate market with organisations and presenting insights and new ideas. This has proved highly effective with getting new clients on
board,” says Simon. “It’s a great way to differentiate yourself from your competitors and gain respect in your industry.” The company’s insight into the graduate market is further enhanced by their initiative, Bright Futures Societies at 45 universities across the UK, including the University of Gloucestershire. “The Bright Futures Societies help students to become more employable by developing their skills and networking them with a range of employers. This activity then gives us huge insight into the minds of students when it comes to how they job hunt and what they look for in employers. The Societies position us uniquely in the graduate recruitment industry as well as raise our brand profile nationally.” www.brightfutures.co.uk Since Cheltenham’s luxury destination, Ellenborough Park, opened in February 2011 it has won accolade after accolade. Awards include the ‘UK’s Leading Country House Hotel’ and the ‘UK’s Leading Spa Hotel’ at the World Travel Awards 2011. The wine cellar has received the Wine Spectator International ‘Award of Excellence’ for its impressive variety. Ellenborough Park’s staff have paid an integral role in delivering success. Last year, Executive Head Chef, David Kelman, prepared food for the Queen for the second time at the Royal Welsh Assembly. Head sommelier, Tobias Brauweiler, completed his Court of Master Sommeliers’ advanced course and was awarded the prestigious ‘Pommery Award’. General manager, Graham Vass said: “The success of Ellenborough Park is a testimony to the quality of our team. We are determined to continue to provide a high level of quality and remain as Gloucestershire’s first choice luxury destination.” www.ellenboroughpark.com Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Gloucestershire Chamber of Commerce,183 Westgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 2RN. inspiring future engineers
Stroud MP Neil Carmichael is the driving force behind a new Festival of Engineering and Manufacturing in April this year, highlighting the opportunities for young people in this expanding sector...
For more information about the Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering, please contact Debbie Young on 01453 751572. neil.carmichael.mp@ parliament.uk FEBRUARY 2012
Stroud has a history as a thriving manufacturing town, its formerly flourishing textile mills bringing economic prosperity to the town and creating local jobs. Now, even though the mills closed in the late 20th century, these factories have been converted into office and residential accommodation, leaving its manufacturing heritage in the town. Stroud MP Neil Carmichael wants to restore the region’s interest in manufacturing and engineering and is the driving force behind the town’s very first Festival of Engineering and Manufacturing which is to take place on April 23rd-27th this year. “We have some fantastic manufacturing and engineering success stories in Gloucestershire and the Festival will put our achievements in the spotlight. We hope the Festival will inspire a new generation of students to pursue a career in engineering and manufacturing. It is more important than ever to attract young people into these sectors,” says Neil. The Festival week will include several key events as well as a series of awards for success, a ‘scrapheap challenge’ for schools and a focus on apprenticeships. Mark Prisk MP, Minister of State at the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills will be guest speaker.
In an ever changing world and the need for constant innovation, it is vital to attract new talent to these sectors to ensure that the UK remains competitive in this field. “There are exciting and rewarding careers in engineering and manufacturing and they are sectors that are keen to welcome young people and provide rewarding careers. “The Festival puts a spotlight on what can be achieved. Britain is still the world’s sixth largest manufacturer, which is a strong foundation for further, much needed growth. Manufacturing and engineering are highly creative although they may not be seen as such, so we hope the Festival will show young people how exciting this industry can be.” Local companies Renishaw (one of the UK’s most successful engineering companies), Nampak Plastics and the leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus will be speaking at the Festival and aim to demonstrate that there are diverse opportunities for young graduates and apprentices available in Gloucestershire. “Apprenticeships are crucial and young people should be seriously thinking about training in the workplace. Tomorrow’s workplace is very dynamic and young people can expect some exciting opportunities in manufacturing and engineering.” CS

Corinium Care Managing Director Camilla Miles is passionate about providing the best live-in care for the elderly. Here, she speaks to Eve Holmes about growing the business from a one-woman venture into an industry leader...
FEBRUARY 2012 F
WWW.THOUSANDWORDMEDIA.COM
What started as a nanny agency nearly 20 years ago, has now transformed into one of the leading live-in care agencies in the UK with 800 registered carers and 19 staff at its head office in Nailsworth. Corinium Care specialises in the introduction of live-in carers for elderly people who are frail and vulnerable. The business has quadrupled in the last four years with turnover now at its highest ever. For Managing Director Camilla Miles, the business started nearly 20 years ago as a nanny agency which she ran from her kitchen table in Bisley. She bought the business from a former house mistress at Cheltenham Ladies’ College which she felt would fit in well with looking after a young baby. “I kept being asked if I could also find carers for elderly parents as well as nannies for their children, and it soon became very clear that there was a huge demand for elderly care,” says Camilla. Two years later she sold the nanny agency and set up Corinium Care to provide 24-hour live-in care for frail and elderly people. “Our service is very specific to the type of people who find it diffcult to manage alone but wish to stay in their own home. We have proved that live-in care is now a viable option so elderly people can maintain their independence.” Camilla soon realised that to provide the standard of care she wanted, the company would have to provide its own training to maintain the highest standards and personal service it prides itself on. The company now provides an awardwinning training programme for its carers which has gained international recognition. Corinium Care also won a 3 star Excellent rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2010. “Winning a National Training Award was one of the highlights for the company. We know how important it is for our clients to have the right person alongside them; that’s why our live-in carers are second to none. Our training programme is one of the reasons that the
business has grown so quickly in the last four years.” Corinium Care’s commitment to its clients is also matched by its loyalty to staff and the company can boast an impressive retention of its carers, some of whom have been with the company for 15 years. Many of the carers employed by Corinium Care are recruited through the company’s offices in South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. “Most of our carers are recruited from abroad; they are very focused on the job they come here to do and they are very committed to their customers.” Camilla admits that her biggest lesson in business has been to listen to customers and staff to ensure she is delivering exactly what people need. The company is also committed to ‘giving something back’, and donates equipment and a much-needed lifeline to the Zimbabwe Pensioners Support Fund. “My early career in the film industry was the most useful training as it gave me the experience in logistics and planning that I now use in my own business,” says Camilla. “I am very grateful that our business is growing when there are so many companies who are struggling. We are lucky to be based in a prosperous area of the country where people can pay for
private care. It is easy to run a business when you feel passionate about it.” And passion about service, training and clients certainly emanates from the very core of the business, with Camilla at the helm ensuring that the company delivers service to the highest standards at all times. “You have to earn your support in business and I am lucky to be surrounded by committed staff and a very supportive family.” CS Corinium Care, George Street, Nailsworth. Independent Financial Adviser Brian Morman explains the importance of preparing a financial and personal game plan for the future.
AWARDED ‘BEST NEW FIRM’ AT STANDARD LIFE’S ‘FORWARD THINKING CONFERENCE’
WITH BRIAN MORMAN Brian Morman ACII ABIBA Dip PFS is an Independent Financial Adviser and Managing Partner of Brunsdon LLP and CEO of Brunsdon Financial Services Ltd, the insurance and financial services intermediary established in 1932. I suspect that the majority of us harbour at least one common ambition. Most people want more disposable money and more free time. I know this because, as an Independent Financial Adviser with over 30 years experience, I am continually asked the same two questions by clients. ‘How can I get enough money to become financially secure?’ quickly followed by ‘How can I find more time to enjoy it?’ I guess you’d automatically assume that more quality free time would be the natural by-product of financial security, but I can assure you that this is not always so. A conscious decision needs to be made to make that happen. Why? Because many people expend so much energy and effort working to accumulate wealth that little time is left for anything else. I’m reminded of the case of a man I once met who’d found himself in exactly this position. He’d worked himself into the ground making money to the extent that he’d created health-related problems for himself and had no time for relaxation. And he was only 28 years old! Suddenly he woke up and smelt the coffee. He realised there was more to life than work. Although he continued to work, he began spending more quality time with his family. And guess what? His production actually increased because he was fitter, more focused and learned to delegate tasks he’d once considered his sole preserve. I believe that a fundamental part of my job is helping clients create a financial and personal game plan as their first step towards money freedom and time freedom. It starts with a set of goals for the future, in much the same way as when you start a motoring journey you have to have a destination in mind. The plan needs
to be continually monitored, updated and improved, and reactive to changing conditions, ambitions and external forces. Continuing the ‘journey’ analogy, think of it like a sat nav recalculating your route when you’re thrown off course for whatever reason. Set goals for 3, 5, 10 or maybe even 20 years hence. Think about what you actually value for yourself and your family, what you want to achieve and how you can realistically realise your aspirations. This will save headaches in the long run and prevents you having to make it up as you go along. The plan will almost certainly include making sure you secure the best possible return on your investments, planning for retirement, minimizing taxes and, certainly in the short term, being prepared for the unexpected things in life. Equally importantly, it should also include planning for free time. Block out holidays on your calendar and look forward to them. The American author, Napoleon Hill, one-time adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, once famously said, ‘What man can conceive and believe, man can achieve.’ Planning ahead and setting goals can really make them happen. I have always followed this philosophy and it’s worked for me. Saving is essential and much easier when focused on what you want – and when you want it! Otherwise money just tends to disappear. Certainly, a big mistake would be to sit on your hands and do nothing. But the important thing to accept is that a financial and personal game plan is always primarily about the goals. It’s not just about the money. Money is just one of the tools you’ll need to help you achieve what you want in life. CS

Di Pitts, Branch Manager of the Cheltenham Handelsbanken branch is passionate about delivering a bespoke service to clients...
‘WE ARE COMMITTED TO HELPING CUSTOMERS ACHIEVE THEIR LIFE LONG DREAMS’
Handelsbanken Westmoreland House 80-86 Bath Road Cheltenham Tel: 01242 224535 www.handelsbanken.co.uk FEBRUARY 2012
Not many banks can boast a top rating from their clients for customer satisfaction. However, fast-growing relationship bank Handelsbanken has been rated top by its customers for satisfaction for the third year running, proving that its traditional values and personal service are appreciated. “The results show that our customers like the way we work and value the kind of service we provide.” With no pressure from set sales targets or credit-scoring, Handelsbanken is able to assess every customer’s situation on its own merits. “Every customer is different and we are committed to building long-term relationships and helping our customers to achieve their lifelong dreams,” says Di Pitts, Branch Manager at Handelsbanken’s Cheltenham branch. “We are a relationship bank with no set sales targets which means we have more time to sit down with our customers to provide a bespoke service that suits their lifestyle. “We are passionate about adding value by understanding our clients’ dreams and helping to achieve them. “It is this type of service that has fostered a high level of customer loyalty and satisfaction.” Handelsbanken has a strong international reputation, and was recently rated the second strongest bank in the world by financial information provider Bloomberg. It operates over 750 branches in 22 countries worldwide, with the UK representing its fastest-growing market. Handelsbanken’s unique mix of local decision making and global financial strength is a highly attractive prospect to increasing numbers of
customers across the Cotswolds. “Next month we will be celebrating the Cheltenham branch’s first birthday; we are delighted that it has been a very successful year. The response to Handelsbanken has been fantastic and the support of our customers and professionals locally has been incredible.” Di and her team know the importance of engaging with the local business community, sharing knowledge and forging important partnerships. “We have a fantastic pool of expertise and top tier professionals here in the Cotswolds, so we are keen to build lasting relationships and keep working collaborations local.” Di admits that, like other companies, the economic climate is their biggest challenge for 2012 but she is also positive about the year ahead. “Our prudent and long-term approach and resulting financial strength are widely recognised, and whilst there is a perception that banks are not lending or supporting businesses as they did in the past, we are still actively funding in both the commercial and personal banking marketplace. Our bespoke approach enables us to look at each business on its own merits. “We are keen to continue the steady growth with good quality clients that we have already seen in our first year. “There are a lot of businesses in Gloucestershire which are doing well. Higher value property has maintained its value, so there is a lot of positivity among clients locally. We would be delighted to talk to you about your specific needs and how we can help you to address them.” CS

legal advice
who has the children?
‘IT IS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT OF EVERY CHILD TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH BOTH PARENTS’
WITH ELIZABETH BRUCE For more advice on this or any other family legal issue please contact Elizabeth Bruce by telephone on 01242 246466 or email elizabeth.bruce@rickerbys.com. FEBRUARY 2012
Elizabeth Bruce from Rickerbys explains a potential reform of the Childrens’ Act to include an emphasis on shared parenting in the case of separating couples... For every separating couple who has children, one of the most difficult things to deal with is the fact that the childrens’ time in the future will be divided between their parents. As a result, the previous day to day contact that most parents have with their children is reduced. The tendency within our legal system at the moment has been for children to remain with their mothers on a day to day basis with arrangements then being put into place so that they have contact with their fathers. It is a fundamental human right of every child to have a relationship with both parents and the only circumstances in which this should not happen is if one or both of the parents do not want this or if there are welfare concerns about one or both parents ability to care for that child. It is becoming a popular point of debate as to whether the law should go further in recognising the rights of both mothers and fathers to raise their children regardless of the relationship that the parents have with each other. In this day and age, society seems to be shifting away from the more traditional view that mothers should be the primary carer of the children. There is an increased recognition that fathers play a valuable role within the lives of children and that generally, evidence suggests that children benefit from having a relationship with both parents. The Childrens’ Minister, Tim Loughton, has been quoted in The Telegraph newspaper on 5th January 2012 stating that the Government’s vision ‘is to establish that, under normal circumstances, a child will have a
relationship with both his or her parents, regardless of their relationship with each other’. This could potentially instigate a change in the law amending the Childrens’ Act 1989 to include a presumption of shared parenting. This would be a significant change to the current position. It will be interesting to see, therefore, how the Government deal with this particular issue and whether there is reform on the scale as hoped by the Childrens’ Minister. The situation remains at the moment, however, that there is no presumption as far as the Courts are concerned about which parent should take care of the children. Separating parents are left to decide upon the arrangements with their children themselves with the norm being for the mother to take on the day to day carer role due to practical reasons. If the parents cannot agree as to the time that the children are to spend with each parent, the Court is there to assist and make Orders about contact and residence as necessary. The preference is, of course, that the parents are able to reach an agreement as ultimately, which is generally preferable for the children rather than having a Court imposed pattern of contact. A move to a presumption of shared care, however, would be a significant step forward for all parents and as such it will be interesting to see whether the Government intend to take any action following the Minister’s comments. This would also bring the UK in line with a number of European countries where shared parenting is already a legal presumption. CS

Presents the cocktail that is literally out of this world…
The Discovery… Amongst curious tales of stolen recipes, rumour has it that our February featured cocktail was first created in the South Pacific but it was actually invented in 1944 by Victor Bergeron, the owner of the original ‘Trader Vic’s restaurant in California. One afternoon a couple of Tahitian friends who were visiting Vic tried the concoction and exclaimed “Mai Tai!” which translated as ‘out of this world!’ The name remained and the drink’s popularity rocketed in the 1960’s following its prominent appearance in the smash Elvis Presley movie Blue Hawaii.
Our Barbadian born bartender and rum specialist Anthony Gibson, has given the Mai Tai his own magic touch to bring a little extra zing into The Daffodil’s take on this timeless classic.
Mai Tai in the mix:
15ml Havana 3yr old 15ml Havana 5yr old 10ml Orange Curacao 10ml Apricot Brandy 20ml Lime Juice 10ml Simple Syrup 10ml Orgeat Almond Syrup Dash Angostura Bitters Garnish: 15ml Captain Morgan (Float/Garnish) Lime Wedge Maraschino Cherry Pineapple Wedge Sprig of fresh Mint
• Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Fill with fresh cubed ice and shake until outside of cocktail tin becomes frosted. • Fill your Serving Glass (A Tumbler or Rocks Glass) with crushed ice. • Strain the liquid from your cocktail shaker into the serving glass, holding back the ice in the shaker tin. • Gently pour over the remaining dark rum, squeeze the lime wedge, add your cherry, mint, and pineapple to the top of the drink and serve with two straws. • Relax, enjoy and put everything on hold until tomorrow! Our Mai Tai is an explosion of refreshing and zingy flavours, barman Anthony’s twist on the original is an unmissable attraction throughout February only at The Daffodil.

much more to come Sporting Style talks to Gloucester Rugby Prop Rupert Harden
It’s been a long road to regular first team rugby at the highest level for Gloucester Rugby Prop Rupert Harden. And not just because he had to move from the North East to Kingsholm in order to achieve his dream of testing himself against the best in the business! It’s a fact of life in modern day rugby union that patience is often needed when it comes to watching props develop from promise youngsters into seasoned first team contributors. Rare indeed are cases such as Jason Leonard who was propping for England at the tender age of 21. More often, it’s a case of controlled progression through various key stages and Harden is a prime example of that. Now in his third season at Kingsholm, he admits that he might not even be wearing the Cherry and White hoops of Gloucester if it weren’t for a chance encounter with some Gloucester ‘legends’. “I’d been part of the Newcastle Falcons Academy and was playing for Tynedale when I came up against Cinderford. “It’s a game I remember vividly. Well, I certainly remember Pasty (Mark Cornwell)! We had a pretty good pack and they also had Rob Fidler and Andy Deacon playing. “We had a pretty good battle against them up front in both games, home and away, and then I got a phone call from Pasty asking me to come down for a week and have a look around. And then Dean Ryan signed me.” When the 25-year-old arrived in Gloucester back in the summer of 2009, there was plenty of strength in depth at the position. Greg Somerville was the man in possession and Pierre Capdevielle and Paul Doran-Jones also signed that summer. However, it proved to be a good season for the former England Counties cap. “I had to work hard. I really improved my fitness and learned such a lot from Yoda (Somerville) but also guys like Olivier Azam and Pierre. “We didn’t have a coach who specialised in scrummaging like we do now with John FEBRUARY 2012
Brain but the other guys were fantastic at passing on their knowledge. “I had a good season on loan at Moseley playing in the Championship, putting it all into practice and playing regularly and my game really came on. “That time in the Championship was really beneficial for me. You’ve got to learn your trade and it’s a really good league. I enjoyed it and it was good for me.” It was the latter part of 2010-11 though when the first team breakthrough happened as he featured regularly after Christmas, slowly but surely clocking up game time exposure. “It was really good for me actually. I was just looking for an opportunity and I got one in the LV= Cup in the New Year. I played the two final group games and the semi final and the final. “That was a fantastic experience for me and I think I was involved in the matchday squad virtually every weekend after that.” At the club’s end of season awards dinner, he admits that he was slightly surprised (pleasantly though!) to be named by Carl Hogg as the club’s most improved forward of the season but that it was a welcome boost as he strives to carry on improving his game. “I was a bit taken aback but it’s always
nice to get some praise from Hoggy! It’s good to know that your hard work has been recognized and appreciated but it’s important to kick on from there. “Dario (Chistolini) came in during the summer and he’s helped to keep me on my toes this season. You have to keep on delivering otherwise you’ll be on the outside looking in. “But the most important thing for me is that I’m getting a chance to test myself against the very best in the game, week in and week out. And that can only be good for me and for Gloucester.” Wise words indeed and with the best part of his career hopefully lying ahead of him, let’s hope that there’s still much more to come from Rupert Harden in a Gloucester shirt. making a comeback Jim McGill test drives the Volkswagen Beetle...
There’s something about the Volkswagen Beetle - certainly the modern version which was first launched 14 years ago which, I have to be honest, I’ve always found attractive and appealing. So, 74 years after the original was created in 1938, order books have opened for the latest incarnation. Right from the start you can see the new model - the three-door starts at £16,490 for the entry-level 102bhp, 1.2TSI petrol - is significantly larger than the car it replaces. But while it’s bigger - length 4,278mm (+152mm), width 1,808mm (+84), wheelbase 2,537mm (+22) - it’s also lower, with the height reduced by 12mm to 1,486mm. Track widths have also increased, by 63mm to 1,578mm at the front and by 49 mm to 1,544mm at the rear Storage capacity for luggage has also been increased and ranges from 310 litres to 905 litre with split/folding rear bench folded (previously 209/769). Four versions will be available: three petrol and one diesel. At launch a 1.2-litre TSI 102bhp with seven-speed DSG gearbox and a 1.4TSI 160bhp six-speed manual will be on offer. In the secondhalf of 2012, a manual version of the 1.2TSI 105bhp, a 2.0TSI 200bhp petrol and a 1.6TDI with 105bhp and BlueMotion will follow. The diesel will
deliver 65.7mpg and emit just 114g/km of CO2. There are three trim levels - Beetle, Design and Sport - and all models have three doors and four seats. All will have a high level of equipment with highlights including air conditioning and DAB radio; alloy wheels, multi-function leather steering wheel, MDI (multi-device interface), Bluetooth and colour coordinated dash and door panels on Design; and Climatronic, Piano Black dash panels, parking sensors and black wing mirrors on Sport. Penned by VW’s group design chief Walter de Silva, and head of design Klaus Bischoff, the new Beetle is immediately identifiable by dint of its bold new exterior design. Right from the very first glance, you’re aware more time and thought has gone into perfecting its appearance than with its predecessor. It looks far more solid, sporty and it’s definitely a car for the current generation of young drivers. The interior has also seen a major reworking. There’s an unusually high dashboard which has been styled to replicate that of the original Beetle, and there’s an old fashioned glovebox compartment in the facia. Right through the cabin VW’s high standard of fitments and fittings are noticeable; everything is beautiful to touch
and there’s that well-established VWfamily feel of solidity and robustness. There’s also more interior space and overall the new Beetle and generally the car benefits from its more contemporary underpinnings and a range of more powerful engines, including a top-of-theline 197bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre. The previous Beetle was - and VW accept this - rather dominated by the female-buyer market. The company believes the more aggressive stance of the new car will attract a higher percentage of male buyers. Use the car for everyday journeys nipping round the Cotswolds and you’ll instantly be at home in the newcomer. The new Beetle is a vast improvement on the outgoing model; and so it should be, of course, given it is 14 years since the previous one hit the streets. More surefooted, higher quality and better styling all combine to make the new Beetle a dynamic improvement on the old one. If someone pushed me hard to choose between the new Beetle and the current Golf, it would be a difficult choice. Beetle v Golf? It’s that old heart v. head conundrum; and in this case the head says ‘Golf ’ and the heart says ‘Beetle’. Really pushed - and as long as you don’t expect it to be an all-round family car - I’d go for the Beetle. The decision will always come down to a lifestyle choice. CS

for whom the bell tolls Page 147

Glosse Posse Spy - G.P.S. - navigating your way round the social scene of the Cotswolds...
WITH CHARLEY LARCOMBE
FEBRUARY 2012
The mention of the words ‘diet’, ‘detox’ and ‘abstinence’ are like the tolls of the death bell for GPS. How can you navigate around any social planners when everyone is nibbling on lettuce and gloomily attempting to find the meaning of life in a pool of over priced tap water? Short lesson: Meaning of Life equals laughter. Simples. Laughter usually revolves around a good Bordeaux and a steak; not a diet pill and an ex-Army PT. So after a long month of hearing about the latest get-skinny-quick schemes, I’m hoping that February will revert back to titillating party type. Alas, it seems February is the time for a knees up, just not here in GL7 country. I’m severely down on numbers after hearing most people seem to be either disappearing to Barbados a la Simon Cowell or skiing. (‘I hear Chamonix is having a dump of 50cm over the weekend’ said a friend. I thought what extraordinary terminology you skiers have). So it seems GPS is flying solo this February. Flying solo. Just as Valentine’s Day crops up on the calendar. Perfect. Will this be the final nail in the social coffin? Not by a long shot or two. Having been sneeringly labelled The Only Single Girl in Gloucestershire by a braying Chin, I retorted that sticks and stones could not break the resolve to still not go out with him and that come February 14th, I’d rather be an only than a plus one. And it looks like I’m not alone in that. A GPS player recently said of his last shoot near Chippenham that the pheasants were bad but the birds were even worse. It seems love isn’t in the air at all. So, come one and all singletons residing in Gloucestershire, let’s have our own candlelit soiree. Rather then stare dejectedly at your insipid chicken salad or withstand another
hastily garage bought bunch of carnations, fix up a party. Main ingredients: carbohydrates, Corona and Tails cocktails (check out: www.tailscocktails.com). February is not the death of the party. Nor the pyre of the Young Free and Single. The social bell isn’t tolling, it’s joyfully peeling. Put down the lettuce and heartily tuck back into society.
Co-ordinates for the Calendar Celebrity Stalking (late lunch, Sundays). We know really we’re supposed to be cooler than this, but c’mon everyone gets a kick out of seeing Kate Moss in The Swan at Southrop and the national press says the Cotswolds is over run with the wealthy and the column-worthy.
Checking out The Tavern From the guys behind The Wheatsheaf (one of Tatler’s top hotels of the world) comes a refurb’ of The Tavern in Cheltenham. Keep an ear to the ground for their Social Sundays, which already sound pretty tempting with the promise of a New York style breakfast. Grab your Superdry shirt and reach for your wallet.
Gloucester Vs Harlequins, Kingsholm (25th Feb) Cheer like crazy as Tindall and crew take to the field. FYI, it seems Costa Coffee on the St Oswald’s Retail Estate in Gloucester is where half the rugby team hang out round about midday. Just a heads up for you there. Valentine restaurant
comment
Andrew Marshall’s Valentine’s Day... Candlelight cast dancing shadows around the room whilst on the tables single stem roses and carnations on crisp white linen add to the romantic ambiance of the room. In one corner, his back to us and much to the obvious embarrassment of the waitress, a gentleman bellowed his order: ‘We’ll have the Scallops followed by…’ A whisper of wind announced her arrival. Earlier that day we had seen her as we sat in a coffee shop looking like she had been through a hedge, clothed in multicoloured leg warmers, a dress that passed muster as a belt, a floral shirt and a scarf that looked like it came out of the Kennedy era. But even so her natural beauty had captured my attention. The metamorphosis now was startling. Now her nails were varnished deep red, her lips an equal colour; her long blonde hair beautifully combed and shiny and the red dress hugged her feline figure to perfection. Now breezing by our table, male heads turned to admire her beauty. Female heads turned with envy. “Doesn’t she realise,” commented my companion, “that one-day she will be old? Those who gaze upon her now will never be able to imagine that she was ever so exquisite and desirable?” “Maybe so, but until then you must realise that there are many who envy the smell of her hair, the touch of her hand in theirs, or if they are lucky the weight of her head on her pillow.” Elsewhere, teenagers sat gazing at each other throughout the evening, holding hands between courses in a world of their own where they are able to share their new love for one another. Few words escaped their lips: the telling was in the eyes. “I do hope that those two can grow FEBRUARY 2012
together, side by side, bring joy and happiness to each other without one having to be crushed so that the other may be strong.” The bellowing ceased briefly after the main course when the gentleman felt he had earned the right to put an unreproved hand gently upon her knee. Alone for a moment at his table, his attention turns to the waitress. “Do you know that as I watch you pass by my table, the light from the table candles falling on you reminds me of an angel walking amongst a field of flowers?” “I know that, you sweet darling, and that is exactly why your girlfriend deserves a particularly expensive and exciting present from you!” Alone he sits in the corner, his fair skinned partner having departed. “I am not surprised she left. The human heart, particularly a woman’s heart, is full of cravings, full of unfulfilled aspirations that can’t simply be stilled by a solvent bank account. And all that shouting as well!” “I believe that it is sometimes less difficult to wake up and feel that I am alone when I really am, than to wake up with someone else and be lonely.” “Oh, very deep! Have you ever been in love?” “Of course, my dear. I have loved and been loved. I have known pain and sorrow, but also happiness far greater than I ever dreamed possible at your age.” “I don’t know what is to become of me,” said my fifteen-year old niece as we stood up to leave. “I don’t know where I am going. I only know that I must find my own way in this world.” “And what of love?” “Every morning I will wake with the same hand in mine: if I am lucky.”CS

poachers
Continuing our series of comment pieces, Andrew Drake takes us to the heart of ‘his’ countryside... When I was just starting my time as a keeper I was constantly warned of the need to be wary of pheasant poachers. The Gloucestershire Constabulary used to run regular poacher patrol nights in conjunction with local keepers. We would all meet at a local farm and spread out over various woods and beats in the anticipation of flushing a few poachers into a net of waiting Bobbies. Those Bobbies were, to put it politely, a mixed bunch; some from rural stations were quite at home in the countryside but quite a few from the bigger towns and cities were like fish out of water. It was always interesting to see the patrol virgins unload from the big police vans in their spotless uniforms and brand new wellies. And whilst personally I feel that anyone who has never spent a misty night in the woods, trying to sneak around and make out that they are part of the local flora, has missed out on a rare treat, the townies amongst the bobbies must have been subject to a fair amount of barracking from their colleagues because they mostly looked scared to death. To be fair, the woods can be a cold and surprisingly noisy place as the woodland creatures make their way about looking for their nocturnal feed, so what seems perfectly familiar to some of us could, to the uninitiated, actually be quite intimidating. In those days I could sell a couple of brace of pheasants after a day’s shooting and, with my tip from the guns, have doubled my week’s wages! Admittedly I was only earning £25 per week then. It does show how economics have changed in the countryside though, as this season a wily keeper would feel proud of FEBRUARY 2012
himself if he was getting 80p per brace from the game dealers. And at those prices it just isn’t worth it for the pheasant poachers to venture out on a cold night. That doesn’t mean however that there are no poachers in the Cotswolds anymore. The dramatic spread of the deer species throughout the UK and the rising popularity of venison have provided a new target for the poachers. In a sense, deer have become victims of their own breeding success and they are an awful lot easier to see than pheasants out in the countryside at night. However, just because deer are easier to see doesn’t make them an easier catch. I have come across deer left in terrible states as they have avoided the poachers’ grasps. They have usually been shot with underpowered rifles or illegal firearms by men more eager to make a fast few quid than skilled in hunting. It is also not uncommon to find deer dying a slow and painful death with crossbow bolts or arrows lodged in them, and it has been down to me to dispatch them quickly and mercifully. In addition to causing horrible suffering with their poor aim and inappropriate weapons, poachers rarely feel any need to observe the correct season for deer, and have on many occasions left orphaned fawns to fend for themselves and probably die as a result. So if someone offers you a chance to buy some cheap venison, think long and hard about the implications of accepting. A few questions about its origin might leave you with an uncomfortable feeling, not to mention a bad taste in your mouth. CS

Do you have a mobile phone? If the answer is no, you are in an extreme minority. And I am slightly envious of you. (Although currently I don’t have a mobile phone either and it is ruining my life). I am seduced by the notion of not having one for two main reasons - firstly, you will never have to go through the torture of losing it; six month’s worth of photos and all your contacts, gone - and people that are trying to get hold of you, making the assumption you’re avoiding them. Secondly, people do not expect to be able to get hold of you in quite the same way if you don’t have a mobile. I have often heard the exasperated moan ‘Why doesn’t she just answer his/her bloody phone?’ from various different people. If you have a mobile, it is presumed by the masses who have your number that you are therefore available to them whenever they like. There is an assumption that pre-arranged plans may be altered up until the last minute, provided someone lets you know on your mobile. Sudden passing thoughts that raise a question with a friend, family member or even a colleague, miles away are expected to be addressed before bedtime at the latest. And face to face thank yous for favours, or dinner… should be followed up with a texted one - including smiley face and kisses. I won’t even get into the heartache or embarrassment that can potentially be caused by the portable telephone. Like my friend, who mistakenly sent a kinky message meant for his new girlfriend, to everyone in his address book; including
his boss, his mother and Alan from Buildbase. I dropped my new iPhone down the toilet and now it won’t work. (Back pocket of jeans, toilet was pre-use). For one reason or another, I don’t have it insured so I am desperately hoping it will dry out and come back to life - leaving me temporarily paralysed in the communication department. This has been both immensely frustrating and also quite liberating. People have had to dispense with the idea of being able to contact me at all times. But similarly I cannot contact them. Or anyone. I have had a car break down and a minor work emergency during this time and having to rely on emails and a landline feels impossible. The other thing I have learnt is that nowhere has a payphone anymore! Pubs and hotels - nope. I did see one at an airport and was horrified to discover I don’t even know how to use them! Imagine that! I can’t work a pay phone, it has been so long since I’ve had cause to (no wonder no-one has them anymore). I have no idea how much it costs to make a call from a pay phone either (apparently not 10p like the last time I used one). And - even if I did - as if I’d know anyone’s number, or have them all neatly written down my address book. My iPhone is my address book!! Anyway, the latest, is that there are 22 months left on my contract at a nice hefty iPhone weighted monthly price and unless I want to fork out £420 for a new one I’ll be using an old brick-like machine that doesn’t go online, until I am in a position to make an upgrade.
