EDITOR’S FOREWORD
W
ELCOME to our October issue. I am delighted to take over as the new Editor of Cotswold Style, having previously been Editor at our sister magazine The Cheltonian. I would like to introduce you to some new, regular columnists this month and these include Claire Thayers who will be reporting on her hilarious antics from the countryside and Sandra Paul whose column ‘Unbelievable!’ will give you a platform to air your grunts and dissatisfaction (or indeed praise) from services you receive in the county. Please contact her with your stories! I have asked each of the county’s five MPs to inform me of what they are doing in their constituencies in another new feature called ‘Westminster In The Cotswolds’. With the general election only 6 months away, I am sure many of you will be interested to know what they are doing to defend their elected seats. Autumn is now upon us and we showcase the spectacular views that surround Stroud on this month’s front cover. A stunning, historical town with a bohemian vibe, an eclectic population, fabulous food artisans, galleries and shopping and encircled by five sweeping valleys, makes the area a bejeweled place to visit. Travel writer Lucy Garbutt takes us to Tanzania this month, to explore what is widely regarded as the world’s greatest game reserve - Selous. Having lived in South Africa for 10 years, I have been fortunate enough to see plenty of wild animals but the Selous is definitely at the top of my bucket list to visit. The Mind, Body and Soul feature explores beauty treatments and products to aid ones wellbeing. Essential at this time of year with the changing climate and getting prepared for winter. Don’t forget to enter the competition to win a fabulous Osprey handbag worth £495, courtesy of Gloucester Quays. I would love to hear any comments or thoughts you may have over the magazine, so please don’t hesitate to email me. Best wishes,

Meet Emeline & Sarah Emma Logan speaks to Emeline Watchorn and Sarah Field, two hugely talented potters from the Cotswolds PHOTOGRAPHY BY WWW.LIAMJONES.COM ucked away in a truly, idyllic Cotswold village is a small converted barn that is home to a potter’s studio and gallery. Here Emeline Watchorn and Sarah Field have come together to work side by side creating beautiful and unique handmade ceramics. They produce everything from large robust stoneware platters to delicate porcelain Christmas decorations. They both work predominantly in porcelain. Emeline hand molds all her pieces and her work has a more organic feel using neutral colours and naturally occurring patterns. Sarah’s work is all thrown on the wheel and is finer, more symmetrical and colourful and the two styles compliment each other beautifully. It is for this reason, amongst others, why they chose to work along side. The two women met three years ago and despite working independently of each other, they share Sarah’s studio, an online shop at notonthehighstreet under the name of Artisan (www.notonthehighstreet.com/artisan) and sell their work together at fairs under the name of their studio - ‘Duntisbourne Studio’. They also sell wholesale to various shops and outlets both locally and nationally and have supplied a couple of London restaurants. “It’s a hard business to make a living from and can be tougher than it looks,” points out Sarah “but we have an enviable lifestyle working here and doing something we really love.” At busy times of year such as the build up to Christmas, it can be back breaking work. “It’s physically demanding and a long process from start to finish that can often fail on the last firing, so we have our fair share of frustrations.” Sarah, a potter for nearly 20 years, started her ceramics journey in Sydney where she leant to throw on the wheel at a day class. When she returned to England she studied ceramics for 12 years at Stroud Art College. Sarah has also trained to teach ceramics and alongside producing her range of porcelain tableware, she now works with recovering

addicts at the Nelson Trust Rehabilitation Centre in Stroud. “Working with these vulnerable adults out in the community is very rewarding. The clients gain so much from working creatively with clay - it is a very forgiving medium and I am frequently amazed at their hitherto untapped artistic talents. The classes I run give the clients a much needed creative outlet and because the ceramic process is a long one (making, drying, firing, glazing and firing again,) it teaches them a valuable lesson in life, namely patience, an attribute often missing in the life of an addict.” Her latest endeavor has taken her on another mission designing linen pinafores, which are now being made up locally for an ever-increasing number of customers who, while purchasing pots, admired the elegant yet practical pinny that both potters are wearing in the opening photo. Emeline is newer to ceramics having previously worked as a London based interior’s stylist. After moving to the Cotswold she was looking for a career that worked well around her young family but was creatively exciting. Having always had a passion for ceramics, she was keen to try it out. “Clay is such a sensual medium. I was really drawn to it and find it both relaxing and stimulating to work with. It’s an ancient craft that hasn’t changed much for centuries and I feel it connects me to a simpler and more gratifying way of life.” Largely selftaught, this was a huge challenge for her as she had to learn her craft and how to
sell it in a relatively short period of time. Another benefit of her new job that she talks about, is how much her children love playing with clay, so much so, that she now regularly volunteers as a pottery teacher at the village school. “I find working with small children really inspiring. They love it, especially when I tell them that clay is essentially mud. I think it’s a primitive urge in all of us to create something with our hands, and clay is such a great way to do that.” They both agree that in our modern world and with increasingly busy lives people are getting overloaded. Creative processes such as potting can be very leveling and even healing as demonstrated by Sarah’s work with recovering addicts. They also feel that this is reflected in their work. Emeline explains that, “A lot of love goes into each piece. You have to be passionate about doing what we do and we hope that comes across in our work. The pieces are designed to look beautiful but to also fulfill a basic every day need, such as your favourite mug that you have for your first delicious coffee of the day, or a perfect bowl for home-made soup.” If you would like to visit Emeline and Sarah in their studio, please call them on 01285 821159 or 07765 576 117. Their websites are: www.sarahfieldceramics.com and www.emelinewatchorn.com Emeline and Sarah will be attending the following fairs during the run up to Christmas: • Beaudesert Autumn Fair at Beaudesert School – October 18th • Wellchild Christmas Fair at Daylesford – November 10th, 11th, 12th • Pinewood Christmas Fair at Pinewood School – November 29th

MARKET COMMENT After a quieter summer the autumn market has arrived and with it a renewed level of activity in both buyers and sellers; there is little doubt that the next few months are going to be an exciting and busy period. We are delighted to have some fabulous new instructions being launched over the next few weeks. Of particular note to the west of Cheltenham we have a charming Victorian former vicarage set in around 1.7 acres of beautiful gardens and a stunning, substantial Cotswold stone village home again with generous gardens close to the market town of Winchcombe. We are once again seeing strong demand for good quality family houses within the catchment areas of the best of Cheltenham’s primary and secondary schools. The demand for homes on the Leckhampton side of
Charlton Kings has never been higher as both Charlton Kings Junior School and Balcarras School continue to go from strength to strength. As I write we are awaiting the results of the Scottish independence referendum which has been heavily dominating the news over the last few weeks. It will be very interesting to see how any change in the governance of Scotland impacts on both the wider economy and the local housing market, however it seems unlikely that the local impact will be too severe given the current growing confidence. If you are thinking of selling and would like some confidential advice I believe Knight Frank are superbly placed to assist. With 9 offices within a 40 miles radius of Cheltenham and more than 20 London offices our reach to buyers at local, regional, national and international levels is second to none. Stunning Stroud... I
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES TANDY
HIP&GREEN
t was the top British designer Jasper Conran who once likened Stroud to ‘the Convent Garden of the Cotswolds’, and the area was made even more famous by Laurie Lee’s novel Cider with Rosie. Stroud is a great base to explore the undiscovered south Cotswolds countryside and the Five Golden Valleys. The town of Stroud is the capital of the south western Cotswolds and located at the divergence of the five Golden Valleys, so named after the monetary wealth created in the processing of wool from the plentiful supply of water power. Five populated valleys converge at Stroud, ten miles southwest of Cheltenham, creating a bustle of hills. The bustle is not a new phenomenon. During the heyday of the wool trade the river Frome powered 150 mills, turning Stroud into the centre of the local cloth industry. Even now, Stroud is very much a working town, and one that

doesn't need its heritage in order to survive. While some of the old mills have been converted into flats, others contain factories, but only two continue to make cloth - no longer the so-called Stroudwater Scarlet used for military uniforms, but high-quality felt for tennis balls and snooker tables. In recent years, Stroud has become a thriving alternative centre, its town
council, Green since 1990. You'll see mountains of organic food and sustainable goods for sale in the centre, while the nearby valleys are home to a growing community of artists and New Agers. Stroud has attracted its own share of local celebrities from novelist Jilly Cooper who lives up the road in Bisley to musicians Lily Allen and Mike Oldfield and of course the real locals favourite, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards but it’s an unpretentious town with an air of Richard and Barbara about it, unlike the Jerry and the Margo brigade which so many other Cotswold towns seem to attract. It is a charming and vibrant place and needs rediscovering if you haven’t visited for a while. Some of our favourite eating establishments in the Stroud and Painswick areas are:

Restaurant Review
Ciao Eatalia Hannah Gordon eats at Ciao Eatalia, Stroud’s finest new restaurant Drivers passing through Stroud are presented with a view that really doesn’t show the best side of this beautiful town. They see rather eccentric mini roundabouts and a conglomeration of less than attractive buildings, a bus station and fast food outlets. It was with some trepidation therefore that we approached our venue amongst all this. What we saw was a very unexpected and pleasant surprise. A beautifully restored building close to the viaduct, Ciao Eatalia stands out, invitingly. A huge parking area for customers made things easy right from the start. The large bar area, with exposed brick, sandblasted beams and boldly painted supporting cast iron pillars and lots of comfy leather sofas make a lasting impression. The restaurant is downstairs. So, after our cocktails, the delightful owner, Giovanni escorted us to our table, which gave us a great view of the open kitchen and fabulous pizza oven. One could really
easily be in Italy as every waiter and chef are genuine Italians and boy they know what they are doing! The huge menu allows plenty of choice for all the family. We chose our starters from the ‘specials’ menu and both were superb. My companion chose the goats cheese grilled and served on toast and a bed of broad beans and mini sweet peppers. My scallops were brilliant. With more than twenty choices from each part of the main courses menu, pasta and pizzas, meat and fish dishes we were really spoiled for choice. Vegetarian dishes were clearly marked and it was good to see gluten free pasta available too. Of course, you guessed it - our meal was absolutely exquisite. I love risotto so it was no hard choice for me to choose the Risotto Salmone. Cooked to order, absolutely delicious and not too heavy or creamy. My companion devoured a huge Fiorentina pizza topped with mozzarella, mascarpone, spinach and a freshly cooked egg. I still can’t believe he ate it all but the waiters did challenge him and it was a particularly special pizza. From the lovely Italian desserts on offer I opted for a fresh lemon sorbet and my
plus one for the gelati. In short Ciao Eatalia is a refreshing and exciting new restaurant. Service was faultless, there was a tremendous family atmosphere and we have never seen such happy looking staff. It’s big enough to cater for large parties but also cosy enough and not too open for an intimate meal for two. Giovanni the owner is very much front of house and the energy of Ciao Eatalia. The real darling though is his Papa, Antonio! Antonio had previously run a nightclub from the building. Ready for a change, he had the building stripped back to its rustic charm and breathed new life into it. His excitement and passion for Ciao Eatalia shine through and he has all the old fashioned Italian charm that makes you believe you really have just landed in Italy. I look forward to dining at Ciao Eatalia again shortly and recommend it unreservedly! Ciao Eatalia The Maltings, Merrywalks, Stroud GL5 1QA Tel: 01453 756565 www.ciaoeatalia-stroud.co.uk

Restaurant Review
The Edgemoor Inn Mark and Rachel Hopkins eat at The Edgemoor Inn The Edgemoor Inn, in the village of Edge near Stroud, is a wonderful family run establishment. Chris and Jill have owned, run and worked the inn since 1985; they have ownership not only in deed but in passion and a desire to offer a fine traditional feel to both the restaurant and bar with little twists to a menu that allow those who wish, to be adventurous. The Edgemoor Inn perches just outside the village of Edge with beautiful views of the Painswick Valley and beyond, from a
large spacious outside terrace. As you walk towards the Cotswold stone building from an ample well-lit car park you get a sense of the history of this 19th century inn. The building has been extensively redeveloped by Chris and Jill but done so in keeping with the original building. This redevelopment allows the stunning views to be brought in through the huge panoramic windows enhancing the diner’s experience. Once inside, the traditional bar offers fine local ales from brewers in Uley, Wickwar and Stroud and the restaurant has
a happy, holiday feel to it with fun-filled faces chatting away and generally having a good time. The staff add to this being both welcoming and friendly. The menu offers appetisers ranging from marinated olives, feta cheese, dipping oils and garlic bread; starters such as asparagus wrapped Parma ham with hollandaise to deep fried whitebait; main courses encompass home made styles along with exotic fish dishes. Then there is the dessert menu, which is full and exciting should you have room. Rachael and I started with whitebait and chicken. The whitebait was shallow fried

with a hint of Cajun spice, a great change from the usual battered or breaded offerings and my chicken starter was the most succulent and flavourful I have ever had. Rachael had rump steak that was perfectly cooked to her liking; I had a honey glazed gammon steak with an egg on top that was delightful. We found room for dessert - I had a lemon drizzled cake with vanilla ice cream and we shared a cheese board. Everything was top draw and all delivered to our picturesque window table with a smile and an enthusiasm that puts the Edgemoor Inn on our list of places to return to. All in all a great place to spend a lunchtime or evening enjoying fabulous food, fine ales in a fun filled atmosphere with fantastic views that may possibly inspire you as they no doubt did, the famous locally born author and poet Laurie Lee. The most diverse carpets Grosvenor Wilton combines retro designs and contemporary colour in their first retail carpet collection
Benjamin Grosvenor started carpet making in 1790. Since then, the business that has evolved into Grosvenor Wilton has specialised in the most discerning requirements for design and durability. Grosvenor Wilton is traditionally associated with high-end bespoke carpet for residential and historic houses, film sets and museums. The company’s portfolio includes many high profile commissions such as carpeting for Buckingham Palace’s throne room, the set of ITV’s Downton Abbey and Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster, Lincoln. Now, for the first time, the quality and design flair that royalty and Hollywood stars walk on, is available as a retail product. As well as demonstrating over 200 years of carpet making expertise, the new collection is exceptionally versatile. Applications include wall-to-wall fitting, runners or being made up into edged rugs. Announcing the launch, Grosvenor Wilton’s managing director, Malcolm Foley, said, “Our new Diversity Collection unlocks the huge potential of the luxury retail carpet market. With over 200 years’ expertise distilled into the new range, discerning homeowners can combine unique style with the quality and
pedigree that delights the most demanding carpet buyers. Seeing and feeling is the key to understanding our fusion of heritage and fresh new design. Were he still around, I’m sure Benjamin Grosvenor would be amazed by our novel approach to carpet retailing using technology and media such as the www.diversitycollection.co.uk website.” Grosvenor Wilton’s new Diversity Collection transfers the company’s expertise in specialist restoration, historic and interior-designer markets to retail carpeting. The 12 launch designs are united by the idea of ‘a fusion of heritage and fresh new design’. The new collection is inspired by the company’s huge archive of classic 1950s and 1960s carpet designs – with the addition of contemporary colours. Grosvenor Wilton is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious independent carpet manufacturers with a heritage spanning over 200 years. The ethos of quality and innovation lives on in a legacy of authenticity, classical English design and craftsmanship sustained by continuous investment in the latest design and production technology. Today, Grosvenor Wilton works with some of the most prestigious names in
both the UK and abroad, creating exceptional carpets for stately homes, historic palaces, period houses, commercial venues and private residences, where Wilton carpet is recognised as the truly authentic carpet construction. The vast archive of wholly original designs available to the company – from Georgian and Victorian, to Art Nouveau and Retro – not only enables us to faithfully reproduce carpets of any era but also to interpret the spirit and opulence of a bygone age with unique new designs. Using traditional Wilton looms, Grosvenor Wilton luxury floor coverings are woven with premium quality wool and wool rich blends using fine worsted or woollen yarns, linen and other effect yarns. Beautiful and durable carpets, stair runners and rugs can be created to precise, bespoke specification. Shhhhhh ! Don’t tell..... Emma Logan spoke to Clive Burling a local genius in transforming furniture With an artist’s eye and an innate ability to capture the most subtle of tones, mood and texture in his work, Clive Burling is one of The Cotswold’s best kept secrets. The reason; his clients want to keep him all to themselves! Clive paints. More than that, he transforms and rejuvenates......furniture that is! Kitchens, bathrooms, wooden floors and staircases have all received his attention recently too. It all started when Clive decided to leave behind the world of advertising in London, where he worked first as a photographer and then producing TV commercials. He escaped to North Wales and opened an antique shop! "I love the whole concept of recycling. It really upsets me to see perfectly built quality pieces being discarded, simply because they don’t fit in. "As a photographer I built and painted my own sets and had an eye for detail. Painting furniture was an obvious progression, combining so many of my passions and, let’s face it, it’s very trendy now too!" One of his most recent projects, a beautiful hand built satinwood kitchen in a large family house near Stroud, is a great example. Faced with replacing a tired looking 20 year old kitchen in her new home, at a cost ("well into six figures"), the client contacted Clive for some creative input and imaginative thinking. The end result was a total transformation: an innovative kitchen evolved from Clive’s artistic skills, his paints and brushes, without a builder in sight. A unique kitchen was born. Result: an amazed client and her very happy and relieved husband and this kitchen is soon to feature on a TV screen near you ...... it will appear in J K Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, currently being filmed in the Cotswolds. Eden House in Bath Road is another living, working example of Clive’s individual, remarkable work. Painted chests of drawers, wallpapered and painted wardrobes and beautiful painted floorboards abound, with
Before
After
almost every room showing off his skills. Clive is now running regular one-day courses, showing anyone how to transform a small piece of their own furniture in just a few hours. Clive teaches his "express" method using his own range of traditional, fast drying, china clay based paints. Little or no preparation is required, painting techniques and types finishes are covered. Most of the day, however, is spent hands on,
“I LOVE THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF RECYCLING. IT REALLY UPSETS ME TO SEE PERFECTLY BUILT QUALITY PIECES BEING DISCARDED, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DON'T FIT IN.” painting. He says, "People go home from the course not only delighted with their finished pieces but also with the knowledge and enthusiasm to do more". Oh yes, and there’s a fabulous lunch included too! Clive has lived in Cheltenham for the last 5 years, where he has a small workshop/ studio base from which he takes on commissions. The family home Interior Designer, Kelly James, talks us through creating a family home with a fresh playful design… PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY This sunny property was once dark, unloved and in need of renovation. The owners Felicity and Aren Griffiths spotted the opportunity to transform the house into their home. I was lucky enough to be employed as their interior designer and help create a happy, fun and light space for the whole family to relax in and call home. The living room is wonderfully light due to duel aspect windows outlooking to the beautiful garden which showcases established trees, set amongst the peaceful view. The brief for this space was simple and fun with a Scandinavian twist. We used a simple sofa design and large comfy chairs to feel cosy in. A selection of framed prints and family photos make the room very individual. We selected fun lighting using a clear Kartell Bourgie lamp and industrial cage wall lights. Sheepskins, antlers, cushions and a large rug from the scandi style says simplicity, airy and cool! The kitchen holds s strong design of white units and grey granite worktops; it’s very
simple and current and is a great space to socialise in with friends and have a glass of wine…or two! A few quirky touches make it feel personal and fun and corner oak shelves with bright yellow brackets and framed pictures, are a few of these touches. Again this room boasts stunning views and the large picture window floods the room with light. The family bathroom is bright
and calm which work’s for children’s bath times as well as a nice hot bubble bath to soak in after a long day at work. Elegant bottled bath products makes the bathroom feel grown up and adds a touch of luxury. The floor tiles are a fun twist on a classic design, easy to clean and shows the fresh personality of the house. The master bedroom has the feel of a boutique hotel with a large welcoming button backed bed, covered with Egyptian cotton sheets, throws and cushions. Mirrored furniture reflects light into this sophisticated room. The owners had great ideas for their home; once briefed of their requirements, I was entrusted to pull the schemes together for them. It’s been a pleasure to work on this project and the design ideas and together we have made a playful, loved family home. Behind the Garden Gate This month our Cheltenham based Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, turns the wrought iron handle on the garden gate to reveal a rather impressive autumn collection… HE PICTON GARDEN, what a picture, what a photograph! Just over the Gloucestershire border and like an autumn sweet jar exploding with multi-coloured delight, the sweets on offer here being the national collection of autumn flowering asters. (Not to be confused with the famous Astor family, with whom I and 800 other girls shared many a Cheltenham School Speech Day with one such family member, Rose, now married to a Van Cutsem... not sure if she likes asters... anyway I digress)! From aristocracy to the common name of these plants: Michaelmas daisies, which have been
T
breathing the same air (or absorbing the 58 OCTOBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
same carbon dioxide) here for generations since Ernest Ballard established Old Court Nurseries on the site in 1906. It was he who was responsible for a large amount of aster breeding. Ballard wanted better colours, clean lavender blues and bright whites. He introduced one of the first varieties with a double row of petals: ‘Beauty of Colwall’, pretty and certainly a talking point at the time winning an accolade from the RHS Aster Trials, but for an even better double is the later lilac introduction: ‘Marie Ballard’, a really dashing
daisy delight and putting on an excellent display during my visit. The business was purchased by the Picton family in the 1950s and to this day the asters remain in the safe gardening gloved hands of that new dynasty. With over 400 different examples, mostly cultivars with a few species, the garden borders surround the winding paths like rich velvet ribbons in pink, purples and blues. The massive collection is planted in partnership with sedum and rudbeckia to name but a few, where they all live in herbaceous harmony. These autumnal daisies to my mind represent a sort of astronomy on earth, the twinkling stars attracting many a passing comet-like bumble bee. (Albeit in the case of the bee, a rather slow and meandering comet)! Aster does actually translate as 'star' in ancient Greek. Some of the whites and blues do really jump out at you in the evening light and I particularly like the hybrid 'Twilight' which is one of the few asters to put up with shade. For a sunny spot, favoured by most asters, 'Cotswold Gem' is a must for any Gloucestershire garden, but there really are just too many to choose from! Most of these plants are best at the back of the border as they can reach around three feet in height, but a fascinating little miniature New England introduction can happily edge a border, this is called 'Purple Dome' and is surely a winner and trend we may be seeing more of as breeders strive to create strong, mildew resistant low growing plants. Helen Picton, the granddaughter of the first Picton to take over the site, spends many hours here with her family creating new areas, lifting stock and generally maintaining her pride and joy. She of course has an aster named after her and mighty pretty it is too. Colchicums are another regular autumnal visitor to the grounds and these autumn crocus, dot themselves like fairy toadstools all around under the

“THESE AUTUMNAL DAISIES TO MY MIND REPRESENT A SORT OF ASTRONOMY ON EARTH, THE TWINKLING STARS ATTRACTING MANY A PASSING COMET-LIKE BUMBLE BEE” protection and watchful eye of the aster armies. On guard in the garden, you will find numerous willow sculptures, which are there all year round; hardy features who wait patiently for their aster friends to arise from their slumber at this time of year. I particularly liked the ring of black grass – Ophiopogon planiscarpus ‘Nigrescens’, forming a circle at the base of one such fairy structure, a bit of garden black magic here! In memory of Percy Picton who
purchased the site all those years ago and was a real master of all things Michaelmas, a memorial fund was set up in the late 1980s to provide grants to students at our local Pershore College of Horticulture, my alma mater. So good to see this garden investing time and money in the horticulturalists of the future. Let’s hope that some of those students take inspiration from The Picton Garden and take their astronomical asters on a journey into the 21st century and beyond. COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2014 59

My Diary
llen Helliwell, our lovely Stock Hand, was making a special delivery this week and invited me along to help her. Some of our Bagot goats had been bought by another breeder and needed to be taken to the site of a 12th Century castle in Warwickshire, where another herd of the breed are kept. It wasn’t too far to travel to with our furry passengers in the back of the pickup, all cosy and snuggled up in their straw. Bagot’s Castle turned out to be an enchanting and whimsical place. It is so beautifully maintained with winding, manicured paths, mowed to the perfection of a wool carpet. The castle ruins have not long been excavated and you can see on display all the items that were found in the process. It’s a hidden gem and definitely worth a visit. You can check the website (www.bagotscastle.org.uk) for dates when the site is open to the public. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bagot goats… you’re missing out! You should definitely try and see them in person. They are wonderful characters and always prove popular with visitors at the Farm Park. Our herd here like to put on a bit of a show, playfully locking horns with each other and jumping all over the makeshift ‘ruins’ in their paddock, which keep them (and us!) entertained for hours. As a breed they are petite, with distinctive dark and white markings and their hair is quite wiry in texture. They are an ancient breed and have a fantastic history. We know that some were given to Lord Bagot by Richard II in the 1390’s. They happily stayed as an ornamental herd in Bagot Park in Staffordshire for hundreds of years. In the 1960’s, they had
E
to be removed as the Park was flooded to create a reservoir. They were saved by Lady Nancy Bagot, who gave a trio of them to Joe Henson, Adam’s dad. These three little goats became the foundation for the Cotswold Farm Park herd, now one of the largest in the world. Sadly, there are still less than 200 breeding females left in total, making the Bagot our rarest native goat breed, listed as ‘endangered’ on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) Watchlist. The reason why these lovely animals are in such a critical position is quite simply because there isn’t enough demand for their milk, meat or hair. As strange as it may sound, the best way to allow a breed to thrive is to drum up demand for one of these three products. I buy my meat from Lambourne’s, just down the road in Stow on the Wold, who butcher the meat from the Farm Park. I would encourage anyone to buy, for example, Gloucester or White Park beef (both feature on the Watchlist) because this then gives the breed a purpose. Many of our modern breeds have evolved to being dual or triple purpose, so the competition out there is tough. For breeds like the Bagot, they’re dependent on breed enthusiasts willing to keep them for ornamental purposes. Increasing their numbers takes years and is a long, slow process, but vital in keeping the breed going for future generations to enjoy. One nanny goat that’s certainly doing her bit for the breed is Alice. At 14 years
of age, she’s our oldest Bagot goat at the Farm Park and this spring, she gave birth to yet another kid. Keep going, Alice! Don’t be afraid to venture out to us and visit the Bagots here at the Farm Park this autumn – the British weather may be unpredictable, but we have new seasonal indoor demonstrations and there’s always something warm and dry for everyone to have fun with. You can check what’s on at the website, www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. TANZANIA A VAST AND ANCIENT LAND
Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt experienced the romantic, mystical and spiritual delights of The Selous Game Reserve during a recent safari perfect spot to experience Africa’s extreme beauty and perfect harmony is the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, East Africa. This article was written on the water’s edge, from my sun lounger on the decking of the rather luxurious tented chalet I stayed in at the Selous Riverside Camp, surrounded by panoramic views of the riverside scenery and lush green tropical vegetation. The scene was set for some creative writing; revitalised and rejuvenated following a refreshing dip in the ‘infinity’ plunge pool beside me overlooking the river and a concert of bush music to serenade, with insects buzzing, whistling and humming and frogs joining the chorus! A rustling from the acacia branches above revealed an observer. An inquisitive monkey peered down from his branch fascinated by the keypad tapping. Gradually half a dozen or so family members skittered through the canopy and observed from a safe distance, one with a tiny infant clinging to the mother’s belly. A millipede, the size of a sausage, hurried across the lapping tiled edge of the water. With a crackling in the scrub below a giant monitor lizard marched with confidence, suddenly darting off with terror to the river bank when it spotted my moving silhouette. This was a wonderful spot to reflect on our game viewing today in the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous is Africa’s largest game reserve. It is a wilderness area three times larger than the Serengeti. It has been designated a World Heritage Site by the UN due to its unique ecosystem. Our game drive had been a remarkable day of extreme beauty and perfect harmony, all from the comfort of our safari jeep. 66 OCTOBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
The Reserve is half an hour’s drive from the Selous Riverside Camp. The route to the Reserve runs straight through the middle of local villages. The drive offers a fascinating insight into the very traditional way people live - a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Not a metalled road or brick wall was in sight; livestock amble free range, picturesque wattle and daub clad thatched mud huts, women carrying heavy loads on their heads, some sitting in the front of their homes busy with their daily chores, men gathered chatting and some sleeping, children playing with sticks, chickens scratching in the dust, ducks settled under the shade of a tree. We enjoyed a fascinating bird’s eye view from the safari jeep.
Almost too soon we arrive at the park entrance for some quick ‘admin’ before the gates were pushed opened and we are ushered through to 50,000 sq km of wild, remote Africa. The park supports enormous numbers of wild animals including buffalo, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, last remaining black rhino and predators such as lion, leopard and the endangered African wild dog. Close encounters with some of these extraordinary creatures in such close proximity was a truly magical experience. The Reserve consists of woodland, dense impenetrable thickets, short grassy plains and seasonally flooded pans and lakes, surrounded by an array of lush vegetation, indigenous Borassus Palms and ancient baobab trees. This is a

stunningly beautiful and quite mesmerising part of the planet. We enjoyed a bush lunch under the shade of a glade of trees while watching hippos thrashing in the lake, crocodiles cruising and Egyptian Geese carefully picking around its shores The Rufiji River provides spectacular scenery and an important ecosystem with sandbanks, lagoons and channels providing a sanctuary for the abundant and varied bird life such as the Grey Kingfisher, Lilac Breasted Roller and Fish Eagles. We barely saw another human all day! Back at camp a luxuriously refreshing plunge in our private pool awaited followed by a warm shower, sundowners on the terrace and candlelit dinner in the main lodge area with the fire pit glowing
cheerfully. Some safari reminiscing and star gazing ended a perfect day and I slept like a baby. Another beautiful experience during my stay was a sunset boat safari along the river beside the camp for some wonderful sights of crocodiles, hippos and birdlife including the Weaver Bird busily attending to nest maintenance. Masood Kheraluwala, Tanzanian travel writer reflects on the great Tanzania: “a painter would find inspiration for his brush; a poet for his pen; a carver for his chisel; a designer for his style, a photographer for his lenses; and the list would go on … No matter, what you are or where you come from, the moment you step onto this soil, you become at one with nature. The heart starts singing, the feet tapping, the hands
waving and a glow settles on the face whilst the eyes sparkle in awe of the bounties of nature, be it flora or fauna”. These words encapsulate my thoughts of The Selous Game Reserve – I feel very privileged to have experienced it for myself. Holidays that Please! My name is Debbie Taylor and I could be your Personal Travel Advisor STARTED in the travel industry in 1982 I have travelled extensively to many parts of the world, so please give me a try; I may well have first-hand knowledge of the destinations that you are considering. Just ask and I will be delighted to rave about the beauty of St Lucia and it’s fabulous hotels including the scrumptious ‘Hotel Chocolat’ with a restaurant overlooking the famous Pitons and every meal served containing part of a cocoa bean. Or the Seychelles and the very romantic Desroches – just ask Prince William as he took Kate there on a very special holiday a few years ago! Oman is a quieter option than Dubai with luxury hotels and unbeatable service and don’t forget to include a night in a luxury desert camp and wake up to see camels strolling past and not just any
I
camels. Apparently Omani camels are the best for racing and thus very valuable. Jamaica is home to the most expensive coffees in the world and the Blue Mountain variety is totally delicious. This Caribbean island also boasts producing the world’s fastest man, more beauty queens than any other nation and having a railway system before the USA. Not to mention giving me one of my most memorable days whilst swimming with dolphins, although I did decline the feeding of sharks option that was also available! Jamaica also offers some of the best all inclusive properties I have stayed in. Having spent 2 years in Sicily, don’t get me started on the beauty and food in Taormina, with a trek up to Mount Etna to see the moon like landscape of the lava fields. In fact Italy is a personal favourite from Venice and Florence to
Portofino and the tremendous Hotel Splendido. Over the years there is not much that I haven’t been asked to organise including a wedding in the Seychelles for a Chinese National with Canadian citizenship who was working in Dubai and all this from the Cotswolds so anything is possible and I love a challenge. I can offer a first class service with competitive prices and if you are unable to visit me in my shop in Stow on the Wold please do email me and I can even call you back after office hours if speaking during the day is difficult. So whether it’s a luxury holiday, cruising, skiing, a family holiday, a city break or honeymoon and even just flights to far flung destinations please call me, Debbie, on 01451 810255 or email me on Debbie@holidaysplease.com

HAIR ABOVE THE REST Lisa Walby of Francesco Group talks to Cotswold Style ahead of the Finals of the British Hairdressing Awards Congratulations on becoming a finalist in the British Hairdressing awards! What does it mean to you to have got through? It means the world. I’ve been out of the competition scene for years and running the salon for the last eight, which has meant I’ve had to put my creative juices to one side for longer than I had hoped. Along with being a Mum it has been a busy time for me but this year is my comeback! Deciding to enter the awards was a big decision and now I’m a finalist I'm so glad I did and fingers crossed I walk away a winner.
Where are the finals held and have you been doing anything specific to prepare? The awards are on 24th November at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, which is such a glamourous venue. The only preparation I need to do now is buy a dress and get myself looking fabulous. What did you have to do to become a finalist? I had to produce 8 photographs that reflect skill, trend and innovation and I
was immensely pleased with the finished shots.
You are a finalist for Wales and the South West, how many other categories are there? There are about 10 other categories for all the other regions and there will be many talented stylists there that have made the finals.
You recently celebrated Francesco Groups 8th birthday, what have been your highlights over this time? The last 8 years have been hard work as we launched at the beginning of the recession. But the highs and lows are what has made us stronger and focus so much more on customer service and our clients’ hair needs. One of my many highlights though was becoming a finalist in the British Business Awards for Franchisee of the year, it was a tremendous honour. Finally, any tips for good autumnal hairstyles? Body, Body, Body!!! A must have
combination for this autumn is Sebastian Volupt spray and Drynamic. Apply the volupt spray in layers by spritzing into the root area and then dry through. Repeat this around 4/5 times and then style as usual. Then apply Drynamic (dry shampoo), which creates the ultimate support at the roots and can clear away any daily oils and freshens the scalp. Using actual hair models again was a dream, combined with finding a photographer with a hair awards background; it has made my whole collection more successful!
The inspiration for the shoot hasn’t come from any particular area. I attended the British Hairdressing Awards last year and found the whole event so inspiring, from the catwalk shows to the entries, I just knew I wanted a piece of that this year, and here I am, a finalist! It’s amazing!”

Perfecting your style with the latest autumn colour trends at the STUART HOLMES SALON air salons across the UK often develop strong reputations for certain services whether that is the fact their team are national experts in colour, cut or perhaps hair-ups. In Gloucestershire, we are incredibly lucky to have what some people believe to be one of the UK’s top salons for colour. The Stuart Holmes Salon, in Cheltenham’s Imperial Square, has developed a steadfast reputation for its award winning colour expertise. The Cheltenham salon is bursting with colour experts, some of whom have even
H
qualified in the incredibly rare L’Oreal Colour Degree. Fresh back in Gloucestershire after a hectic period working backstage at London Fashion Week, the team is awash with talent that can help clients get the most out of their colour and achieve the best fashion looks. Expert senior colourist Fi, who has a client base which stretches all across the UK, leads the colour team. Working alongside Fi, are three renowned L’Oreal ID Artists, Natasha, Nicole and Senior Art Director Jo. The trio are part of L’Oreal’s talent team, which travels the country showcasing new colouring techniques.
Olivia Palermo
“Loving these gorgeous brunette tones with a smudge of caramel. It creates a stunning ‘sun kissed’ feel and adds a real depth and excitement to your colour.”
Margot Robbie “This is someone who had a dramatic change, from blonde to brunette. If you are looking to achieve the same, we offer complimentary colour consultations at the salon. This could give you some fresh ideas for your colour.”

Speaking exclusively to Cotswold Style, Senior Art Director Jo explained that colour and helping clients achieve that fabulous new look is what she and her team eat, sleep and breathe. “Fantastic colour can really transform a hair style and add an extra interest in its own right. The popularity of Balayage colouring is immense and we are doing a lot of this at Stuart Holmes. Balayage without doubt is the biggest colour trend since Holly Golightly’s highlights. It really is a colour trend which creates depth and dimension and leaves you with a sunkissed finish.” Jo shares with Cotswold Style her forecast into the colour trends for this autumn:
Blake Lively
“This is my favourite look. Ask your colourist for gorgeous gold with a shimmer of creamy blonde highlights – the perfect accompaniment to an ‘après summer’ glow.”
Rosie Huntington Whitely
“This super stunning colour technique creates a more blended feel by adding ribbons of a darker shade throughout the lighter mid-length and ends of the hair. This also works perfectly to add texture to wavy hair.”

Mind, Body & Soul We discover some of the new, sensational treatments or products available in the Cotswolds, to recuperate your mind, body and soul LVL Lashes from Beautique 12 This is an innovative treatment to give you luscious eyelashes, which last for 6 weeks. A great alternative to false eyelashes as more cost affective and low maintenance, LVL gives an immediate, dramatic effect and the procedure only takes an hour (an eyelash tint is included).
LVL has revolutionised antiquated, perming techniques in a number of ways as it gently lifts and straighten the lashes, making them look thicker and more voluminous. LVL uses silicon shields, rather than rods; the shields are far more comfortable both for you and your lashes. Another key difference is that the LVL gel formulation straightens the lash rather than curls it. The result? Stunning length, volume and lift for natural eyelashes, giving you a permanent sexy, look from the moment you wake-up and even whilst sleeping! gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment, by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. Essential oils have been found to be anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-microbial, antiparasitic, anti-infectious, and antiseptic, combatting infectious disease by killing off viruses, bacteria or other pathogens. Some oils have been shown to destroy all tested viruses and bacteria. The oils can act on both your mind and your body and are some of the most powerful known antioxidants. Their aromas are to found be stimulating, both psychologically and physically and can also be very calming and sedating as inhaling aromas is extremely powerful. According to Jean V. MD, essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and are then metabolised like other nutrients. An antibiotic cannot penetrate your cell’s wall unlike these oils, which are capable of penetrating your cell membranes since they are lipidsoluble. The essential oils’ versatility makes them fairly inexpensive to use. One bottle goes along way and it can be used for so many different ailments. For example, oil like lavender helps with relaxation, sleep, bug bites, eczema and burns. What are you using now to take care of all these things essential oils can do for you? Facial Revitalisation Acupuncture by Steve Wilkinson at Oakwell Health Steve Wilkinson is a highly experienced, acupuncture practitioner who can either visit you in the comfort of your own home or from his premises at Oakwell Health, 45 Cirencester Road, Cheltenham. Facial Revitalisation is proving to be a highly effective alternative to Botox without the need for injections of toxic fluid and no danger of any plasticity of the face – it is a holistic treatment that is noticeably different after one treatment though an initial course of one a week for five weeks is recommended. Very fine detox needles are placed in the areas where you wish to eliminate lines such as on the forehead and above the brow area or around the area under your nose towards your lips. Whilst these are in place, a form of tens machine is used over the cheeks, to help lift and tone the skin and muscles underneath. The procedure is followed by Steve’s version of an ancient Chinese facial Tweena massage which is not only

highly relaxing but also helps decongest the sinus areas. A tiger warmer is then stroked over the whole facial area immediately followed by a cooling jade roller. Finally a layer of essential oils is massaged in, to give your face a fantastic hydrating lift and glow. Throughout the treatment you will receive constitutional acupuncture in other parts of your body to ensure a general well being. A highly recommended treatment, especially for those who prefer a holistic approach to anti-aging. When my good friend suggested seeing Jo at Josspa for a massage I must admit I dismissed it. Frankly, a swab of smelly oils could not
relieve the kind of pain I have surely? Never underestimate the power of massage because, honestly, I really can’t tell you how effective Jo’s healing hands were. She used the Balinese treatment on me – a mix between deep tissue massage, the Chinese treatment of Tuina and the Tibetan head massage, a gift Tibeten monks still practice and teach. I began sitting upright in a chair with a hot, scented towel around my neck and shoulders to warm my muscles. I use a laptop for work and I didn’t realise how I have become almost permanently hunched over. Jo used a lot of force – thumbs, knuckles and the palm of her hand to dig deep into my shoulder and neck muscles, freeing them up so fluid could work their way into areas, which had ‘frozen’. I was then moved face-down onto the bed where Jo laid another hot scented towel, this time on my lower back. Briskly rubbing the sides of her hands along my lower back and bra area – almost as though she was trying to build a fire cave-man style, was a revelation. An incredible, warm feeling generated throughout my body. Jo explained it’s a
Chinese method to eliminate the ‘damp’ from your body, heating the sore areas and relieving pain. From here, Jo progressed to using her elbows and the whole of her arms to dig deep into those muscles that run from the neck down the shoulder. Jo finished with ten minutes of gentle scalp massage that was so soothing I almost drifted off to sleep. I don’t ever go to a spa or have a massage – I usually feel I’m time poor and it’s an indulgence I can ill afford. However, I’ve just realised that spending time with Jo made a massive difference to my well-being and it is an indulgence I am determined to keep up. I urge you if you suffer from any joint or back pain to see Jo and feel her healing hands. JOSSPA The Urban Retreat, 13 Suffolk Parade, Cheltenham Tel: 01242 520553 www.josspa.com

Grace&Glamour Autumn’s Accessory Essentials With the nights drawing in and a chill in the air to come, our styles should change and with it, comes the accessories. Instead of morning summer’s end, it’s time to lust after autumn’s must haves that you can buy, wear now and even carry through to winter. Fashion blogger Grace Olivia from Dorothy & Olive gives her expert advice o here it is, the time of year we all (well, most of us) anticipate more than all. Autumn. When it gets to autumn, the colours get crisper and the style darker. The approach to winter glamour is paved like no other, the autumnal hues are exciting, the textures and layers are mysterious and the cuts, well the cuts are quite literally a cut above the rest. But what is it we covet above all? The accessories, always the accessories. Russell and Bromley Lucky for us, the High Street is packed full of new season styles just waiting to be worn and better yet, in autumns best. Starting with Russell and Bromley (shouldn’t we always?), it’s a little bit mean to choose just one style from their latest collection but with only one page to fill, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do. Known for their over the knee numbers each winter, I could not pick one and the classic black is always the best fit. But rest assured, as long as you’ve got at least one pair of Whistles Russell and Bromley boots on your wish list, you’ll be ahead of the style wars this winter. Berry tones, burgundies and bordeaux should also be at the top of your list. From full ensemble to footwear and adorning your
S
fresh manicure, there’s not a wrong or right place for the shade. Whistles have given us a strong starting point for French Connection autumn with their fold over tote perfect for day, night and day-to-night might I add. The New Lady at Montpellier Asset Management At long last there has been an emergence of the global female economy, which presents great opportunities for us all. The £12 trillion of consumer spending now controlled by women is set to climb considerably over the next five years . Clearly that much money needs careful planning and management… with a touch of female flair! Montpellier Asset Management has newly appointed Charlotte Tupper as one of their Wealth Managers. Charlotte joins with over 10 years’ experience in the financial sector providing a modern outlook on investment advice in today’s digital world.
Q What made you join Montpellier? A As part of my own personal due diligence I looked at a large number of firms in the Gloucestershire area and what I liked was Montpellier’s approach to investing, how they managed clients’ funds, how well they looked after their existing clients and how clients are central to their processes. What I wanted was to be able to align myself with a boutique company, one that shared my philosophy on managing clients’ assets and one that put their clients’ interests at heart. They have a forward-looking approach, utilise
modern technology, have a strong research team and a robust process. The fit just seemed right with Deborah, Simon, Peter and Liz at Montpellier – and with all these points taken into account it was also fortunately only a two-minute walk from my apartment in Montpellier! Q What makes Montpellier different? A Well of course we have a strong female presence here at Montpellier and importantly, we are also not restricted in our choice of investments or products in a way many banks and other financial advisers are. This means that clients can be reassured that they are getting the best possible solution for their circumstances. I find that women can sometimes feel overlooked when it comes to financial advice. With other professions such as law there are a very high percentage of females, unlike financial planning where there are very few. Montpellier now offers an opportunity for the many successful
female entrepreneurs to discuss their financial affairs with another female. As advisers, we understand there is a need for short-term simplicity and long-term stability. This is provided for at Montpellier by the systemisation of the client advisory process where everything is undertaken via an online procedure.
Q What services do we offer? A We offer a relaxed environment with beautiful offices opposite the town hall and we are always available for a chat and a coffee. Our main focus is helping clients to mitigate inheritance tax, capital gains tax and income tax via an advisory process with mainstream pension and investment planning a regular part of our day. WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS With so many political issues affecting the Cotswolds, Emma Logan has asked each of the county’s five MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers what they have been doing to represent their constituencies both locally and from Westminster
Neil Carmichael
NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD Since my election in 2010, I have been working hard to promote the engineering and manufacturing industry across the Stroud Valleys and Vale. In 2012, I founded the Stroud Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering and now in its third year, FESTOMANE is bigger and better than ever before. FESTOMANE is committed to bringing young people together with local companies who are crying out for a skilled workforce. Three years ago I also brought stakeholders together to see how we could utilise the old Berkeley Power Station site to provide future skills and training for the engineering sector. £5million of Government funding announced this year is now set to transform the site, creating a new campus for Stroud and South Gloucestershire College, which will focus on engineering and technology training provision. Additional funding 94 OCTOBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
will also provide much needed transport improvements to Berkeley. The new Berkeley training centre will open in September 2016, and I am currently collaborating with Stroud College on a bid to deliver a University Technical College as part of the campus at Berkeley. In Stroud constituency 24% of all employees work in manufacturing and engineering – and my focus on bringing investment in infrastructure, education and training means a strong manufacturing sector promotes a stronger Stroud. This year’s FESTOMANE takes place between Monday 24th and Saturday 29th November at locations all around Stroud. You can find out more at www.festomane.co.uk www.neilcarmichael.co.uk LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY Parliament only sat for two weeks during September, but it’s been frantic. The Scottish referendum has been the dominant issue, and by the time you read this, the result will be known! I sincerely hope that the Scottish people will have rejected the separatist agenda. Protecting the countryside was one of my main motivations for wanting to enter Parliament in the first place, and I remain constantly engaged in fighting against inappropriate development

proposals, including areas on the edge of the Cotswolds, which my Tewkesbury constituency stretches to. During the summer I have spent much time meeting people, especially from rural locations. The format I use is to group some villages together, and write to all residents inviting them to join me for an informal drink in a local pub. So far, quite a few people have accepted my invitation! I am also sending survey forms to as many people as possible in my constituency, to seek their views on a range of local and national issues. Unsurprisingly, protection of the countryside, and especially the Green Belt, comes out as the most important local issue, and immigration and the EU

Politics the most important national issues. I’m working hard on all these issues. MPs and all interested people are then engaging in the Conference Season. This year, the Conservative Party conference is being held at Birmingham - I do miss the sea side conferences though and I hope that there will be many sensible and interesting policy ideas formulated and expressed during our days there. www.laurencerobertsonmp.com
Geoffrey Clifton-Brown
GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS This month I was able to visit the open day of the Newlands House Retirement Complex in Stow. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet both the residents and constituents who have relatives in the home. I was very impressed by the staff and will be returning to visit on a non-open day so that I can have a proper look around. I have also been continuing my campaign to provide all babies with a Meningitis B vaccination, initiated through contact with my constituents Dr and Mrs Turner, whose granddaughter tragically passed away from the disease. I received answers to my written Parliamentary Questions on the issue following the debate I initiated in the House of Commons. Since receiving the answers I have had a further conservation with Jane Ellison MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Public Health, who informed me that the government is willing to implement the vaccination scheme, however they are still locked in negotiations with Novartis, the manufacturer, over a price. However given that a significant number of infants and teenagers die each year from
Men B, and the tragedy that brings to families, I do not think the Government should delay introducing the Bexsero vaccine on the basis of cost. I also held an important meeting with Julia Simpson, South West Area Manager for the Environment Agency this week. I requested updates on various ongoing problems throughout the Cotswolds, including Cirencester, South Cerney, Fairford, Lechlade and Moreton in Marsh. A number of issues were raised during the meeting and both the Environment Agency and I will be taking follow up action as a result. I am pleased that the Moreton Flood Alleviation Scheme has now begun after years of hard work. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk
Martin Horwood
MARTIN HORWOOD, MP FOR CHELTENHAM The hottest topic in Cheltenham over the summer really should have been affordable housing or climate change but the question I was asked almost every day was ‘can we save the Banksy?’ The now famous retro graffiti spies began as a protest against GCHQ eavesdropping but their story keeps getting more complicated. Collectors and prospective buyers – some local, some not – are still hovering with intent but so are the
police and council, mindful that it’s a criminal act to knowingly interfere with a listed building. That seems to have stopped any immediate removal plan. But is the wall actually the last vestige of the neighbouring house long since bought and demolished by the Department for Transport, while the lawyers argue, we need a long-term plan? A spy museum in the house is one popular idea, certainly amongst local businesses who have done a roaring trade from art lovers and onlookers! www.martinhorwood.net
Richard Graham
RICHARD GRAHAM, MP FOR GLOUCESTER It has been an exciting few months in Gloucester, with various events being held across the city. The Gloucester History Festival, which I am very proud to help organise, was held recently for the fourth year running. It was a great opportunity for Gloucester to show what it can do and it was clear that everyone there had a great time. Volunteering at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital over August showed me the challenges and tough work that our nurses and doctors go through on a daily basis at our brilliant local hospital. I was involved in a range of different tasks over the three days, which included delivering messages to doctors, nurses and the pharmacy, making tea for the patients and changing beds. I also continue to run my Gloucester job fairs and will be holding more in the coming months. These will have a special focus on those with disabilities and help build individuals skills in the workplace. www.richardgraham.org COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2014 95

Expectations! Sustainable recruitment strategies… ince the beginning of the year, the labour market has made a remarkable bounce back, with many of the employment statistics returning to or even exceeding pre-recession levels. The uptake has been swift, with applications being rapidly filled but the latest growth spurt is leaving South West and National businesses with new considerations to make and problems to solve! Skills shortages, lack of available candidates and poor retention now threaten commercial growth and Expectations! Director, Jo Long is warning of the need for a change in recruitment strategy and HR approach. She says “Traditionally, companies have been able to employ the right person with the right skills for the job, relatively quickly and simply. Unfortunately however, times are changing and many businesses are struggling to find appropriately skilled employees and have a challenge keeping hold of those they already have. There is a need to change away from ‘traditional’ recruitment strategies and start putting people front and centre of the business, planning recruitment both for immediate and future needs. Employers should be looking at how they can better engage and retain staff and also whether there are ways of redistributing skills to better suit the existing needs.” She continues, “More recently, many of our new clients are coming on board because they are struggling to find the right candidates and when
S
they do fill positions, they are wasting a lot time, money and effort training someone who is simply planning to leave again. What they should be doing is working with an agency or team who can plan for future growth and look ahead at potential recruitment needs, as well as looking to less obvious talents pools for potential candidates.” In recent months in the South West, jobs have far outstripped available candidates, particularly in the technical manufacturing, technology and service industries. Many of Expectations’ clients are now having improved employment success through:
1. Targeting untapped talent pools; including older workers who are experienced and knowledgeable and often more loyal in the long-term and apprentices who offer fresh insight, low labour costs and a willingness to learn, allowing you to develop them into the company ethos. 2. Better development and training; focussing on
existing staff and looking at where additional training can be supplied, what skills are available in the employment pool and if skills can be redistributed and even bringing in retired and past employees as training consultants to bring the existing team up to speed. 3. Being flexible; many companies are still focussed on full-time, fully qualified employees to fill the entire role but becoming more flexible including job shares and flexible or compressed hours for example can help you obtain the skills you need without the traditional approach.
Of course, not every option is viable for all businesses but it is worth stopping and considering knowledge management, succession planning, current and future needs and what your overall strategy should be. There needs to be a shift from reactive to proactive recruitment and local businesses should learn from the example set by companies such as Renishaw.
For support on your recruitment strategy, call your local Expectations! branch and we’ll be happy to help! Baking & boot camp… Eric Barton meets up with Gloucester dentist Dr Suganthy Suthagar PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES TANDY I like cake. I don’t like boot camp. However, I do know that I shouldn’t eat sugary cakes and that I should go to boot camp. It’s a dichotomy that pains me, but thankfully not in my teeth yet. So it’s a great relief to find out that a local dentist is both pragmatic and deeply human in these matters i.e. we shouldn’t have sugar but we sometimes do. Dr Suganthy Suthagar is the kind of dentist I’d love to go to. She’s soothing, pleasant and brimming with confidence about her abilities and that of the team that surround and support her at The Courtlands Dental Practice in Gloucester. Dentistry to me is all about qualifications, training and skill. It’s a profession where technology keeps moving at a pace that leads to new techniques and materials that can improve the quality of treatment that can be provided to patients. Suganthy did her training at Sheffield Dental School in 1993 and then a move to Toronto in Canada beckoned. This was for Suganthy an epiphany as it transpired that Canada (at the time) was almost ten years ahead of the UK in terms of treatment and techniques. In 2005 she made a return to the UK deciding to go into practice for herself. Suganthy commented, “I really wanted to do my own thing. When I took over the practice it was a lot smaller then and the owner at the time was on the point of retiring’’. She went on to say, ‘’in spring of 2013 I decided that the time was ripe to make some changes and expand the practice in both terms of space and what we had to offer patients’’. It’s very clear by the smell of new paint and the pristine appearance of the practice that a huge amount of work has gone on to make the practice what it is today. Suganthy goes on to comment, “I had a great amount of support from my architect Russell from The Eric Cole Partnership, my builder Ryan from Farrdenn and my accountant Phil from Pitt, Godden and Taylor to enable this expansion to happen’’. Like any growing 98 OCTOBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
business Courtlands Dental Practice needs and wants to stay ahead of the competition. Suganthy further adds, “It’s crucial for us to mentor young dentists. It’s a real quid pro quo situation for us. These young dentists are brimming with all the latest techniques and in return we’re able to offer the benefits of experience when it comes to dealing with and treating patients’’. The capital investment needed to make the expansion swallowed up over £200K, which is no small sum. Suganthy says, ‘’it was a really tough eight months to get the project completed. We had to jump
through several hoops with the planning department to enable the building works to go ahead’’. She further says, “lots of our patients have really embraced the changes and have been hugely supportive’’. It’s a testament to herself and her staff that some patients who were registered to the old business for some thirty years have stayed loyal to Courtlands. The practice itself is awash with all the latest equipment and treatment rooms. It’s a very pleasant place to be. I’ve been in some dental practices that would scare an ogre. Not here. It’s a warming, friendly place that

Suganthy knows that only too well. She says, “Its crucial for us at Courtlands to provide an environment that’s both reassuring for our patients and one that offers them the best service
we can provide. Nobody likes pain and we put that pain management right at the top of our list’’. Something must be working as the practice is growing steadily and most of that is by word of mouth (no pun intended). Suganthy also adds, “we pride ourselves on offering prompt treatment and having no long waiting times. Our appointments diary is managed very efficiently to ensure that we don’t keep patients waiting’’. Suganthy goes on to say,’ I just love giving someone back their smile. It’s a privilege to improve someone’s life and to see the difference we can make ’’. Outside work Suganthy (unlike me) enjoys boot camp as much as she does baking cakes with her two children. She finally says, “we work very long hard hours that our patients don’t see. There’s a plethora of administration to be done after we finish our normal clinical day, so
getting home just to bake a cake over the weekend with the kids is a treat’’. So if you want to see a dentist in a calm, friendly environment where the patient really does come first then give them a visit. They may even make you a cup of tea…just don’t ask for cake! Employment law could be suffering from stress By Darren Sherborne of Sherborne Solicitors LLP
he theme of this column, on the whole, has been to highlight the ways in which modern law, particularly employment law, has failed to keep up with our world and the way we live. An interesting news story released in September highlights this and focused on an increase in mental illness. Clearly I am not medically trained and don’t profess to judge those unfortunate individuals who suffer from any sort of mental illness. The fact is however that we as a society often tend to judge such illness with a modicum of suspicion, whether it’s because we as individuals may not understand it, or perhaps because we can’t see it in the way we can see a broken leg for example. Certainly this conflict between our natural tendency to sympathise with anyone suffering and our natural scepticism is never highlighted better than in the workplace. This is made worse by employer’s ignorance as to how they should respond and the tribunal’s desire to see fair play. By coincidence, in the same week as the story broke about a notable increase in mental illness, a case was reported following an appeal which shows just how we do struggle to balance conflicting rights when they concern this subject. The case (Hensman v Ministry of Defence) focused on a male employee dismissed for covertly recording a female colleague in the shower. You would think that this case should have been as open and shut as the bathroom door but that’s not how it panned out. The tribunal, clearly concerned about the rights of the employee (who suffered from a mental illness) found the subsequent dismissal unfair. enough thought to, was the impact on the innocent victim of this guy’s secret filming, and the impact on the level of trust that the employer felt they could now have in this employee. In fact, it would appear that the tribunal were more concerned with the voyeur’s rights than the victim’s and employer’s rights. What this highlights is the way in which the law has made us tip toe around these situations, often to the detriment of the sick employee. The guy undoubtedly had a recognised and well diagnosed illness, no one disputed the bona fides of the illness, but when the illness manifests itself in a way such as this, are we really expected to accept what, by any standard, is pretty poor behaviour. The answer is that we don’t, but employers and sometimes tribunals think we do. In the case in question, the judgment was sensibly overturned on appeal, with the appeal judge pointing out that insufficient thought went into the trust that was damaged and the feelings of the victim. It seems to me that our reactions to mental health and its manifestations in the workplace are becoming polarised. Either we go to extreme lengths to avoid doing anything to upset or hurt a sufferer regardless of what they have done, or we doubt the veracity of the illness. This second point is perhaps a result of not only the fact that we can’t usually see mental illness, but that because we can’t see it, it has on some occasions been used in a less than
sincere way. (It has to be said). Anecdotally, when I first started practicing, the big unprovable illness at work was the bad back. No one really talked of stress. However the bad back is now quite rare, at least as far as I am concerned from a professional point of view (and excluding my own occasional discomfort). It seems it has been replaced by “stress”. I will leave you to draw your own conclusions as to whether this is because we are blessed with stronger backs, or because we are afflicted with minds more susceptible to illness than say 20 years ago, or perhaps it is because it is easier to feign? It is not uncommon, when faced with being accused of some wrongdoing, that an employee is struck down with stress. This seems to paralyse the employer into doing nothing for fear of accusations of discrimination. In my experience, if the employee is genuine, having a charge hanging over them for prolonged periods does nothing to help them (in fact it usually makes them worse), and if it is not genuine, all the delay achieves is more uncertainty for the employer, and cost, and more pressure on the remaining employees. The sad fact from a legal point of view is that this damaging paralysis is often totally unjustified and not in anyone’s interest. You might be forgiven for thinking that it must be the law itself that is under stress. BUSINESS FOCUS Kat Shayler of SHARPFOX Marketing Tell us a about your background? Cheltenham born and bred, I moved to London after completing my degree in Bristol. I started my career as an account executive at one of the big global advertising agencies, working with clients such as Diageo (Johnnie Walker and Baileys) and British Airways. If any industry can teach you how to develop a thick skin and organisational skills that are second to none, then it’s advertising. There is a misconception that advertising executives all lead Champagne lifestyles; sadly times have changed since the ‘Madmen’ era – hours are long and clients expect a lot from you. It’s been a fantastic grounding for me as I work extremely hard to get the best results for my clients.
How did SHARPFOX come about? When I set up SHARPFOX, I wanted to provide a marketing consultancy service that was inclusive. I felt that there were so many marketing agencies out there who were only offering a ‘onesize fits all’ approach, whereas the reality is that in these times of austerity, small businesses in particular only have small budgets and don’t necessarily need a huge range of services. Tell us a bit about what you do? We work with clients who want the whole shebang in terms of marketing services. Clients who just need their branding to be given a bit of a facelift and others who would rather be focusing on their business strategy than spending their time tweeting. What’s special about us is that we provide all the benefit of a ‘big London agency’ experience but we don’t charge London rates to our clients. I think the word ‘bespoke’ is widely overused but it would probably describe what is special about us – the fact that we meet with our clients, find out exactly what they need and then tailormake a solution that fits them. We don’t try and tell our clients that they should do it all, as often focusing on one element of the marketing mix and just
doing it really well has huge efficacy. We have worked with a wide range of clients and brands, from small start-ups to bigger blue chips and we offer a full range of services from branding, marketing, social media and events planning to everything else in between. We have a great team of people who are the best at what they do.
What are some of the more interesting projects you have worked on? There have been so many I have enjoyed for different reasons – from photographing packs of a well-known margarine brand up in the Spanish mountains (some things just can’t be recreated in Photoshop!) to organising fashion parties at London Fashion Week and most recently pulling off an amazing event in Cheltenham, the Beards Jewellers Diamond Rush (I must mention here Anna Mason at Maggies and Ellie, Annie and Jess at Silverball
PR, who worked their socks off with amazing results). We are lucky to work with some amazing clients and brands.
What would be your top tip for new businesses starting out that don’t know what their marketing should consist of ? Really focus on what it is that makes your business unique and special. If you’re passionate about your business we find clients usually have a pretty good idea of what they want to say, we just help with how best to communicate it. My second tip would be to give us a call. It costs nothing to meet with us over a cup of coffee and have a chat. SHARPFOX Marketing T: 0333 200 1404 www.sharpfox.co.uk

Food & Drink
A Purple Gem This month food writer, Shelle Duffin, tantilises our tastebuds with autumnal fruits ... The summer nights have drawn to a steady close, the temperature has suddenly dropped as the trees begin to shed their beautiful crisp golden leaves – yes, autumn is here. Having dug out the cashmere and turned up the heating, let us take to our kitchens once again to cook up some nourishing
Damson Gin This is a wonderful drink during the autumn and winter months, bringing warmth to the heart as well as the cockles. It’s easy to produce, and makes a scrumptious gift on any occasion, if you can bear to give it away!
recipes which will see us through the colder months that lie ahead. There is nothing more satisfying than a plate of home cooked comfort food washed down with a tipple or two of sturdy homebrewed liquor. This month, we welcome the juicy damson back into bloom. As well as making scrumptious jam, this decadent member of • Even though you are meant to leave the gin for 18 months to mature, you can still indulge in a tipple now and again, so I would suggest making this delicious substance in bulk.
To fill a 1 litre jar
450g damsons 225g caster sugar 600ml gin 1x 1 litre jar Method • Ensure the jar has been thoroughly cleaned and sterilised - you can achieve both by putting it in the dishwasher, or by washing and placing in the oven on a low heat for 10 minutes. • Wash the damsons and discard any stalks. Using a cocktail stick, prick each one several times and put them into the sterilised jar. • Add the sugar, followed by the gin before sealing the lid and giving the jar a really good shake. • Leave the jar in a cool, dry place and allow the damsons to infuse the gin. Shake every day for a week and then every week for 10-12 weeks. Taste after 10 weeks in case you think it needs a little longer to ferment. • Once you are satisfied with the flavour, pour into sterilised bottles and store for 18 months. Cook’s note
Partridge with Mulled Damsons The sweet, spicy scents of these little gems works beautifully with partridge, without being too overpowering. This dish is elegant yet simplistic in the making, and is an ideal main course to serve at an autumnal dinner party. Serves 4
Ingredients 4 oven-ready partridges 8 rashers of smoked streaky bacon 300g damsons 20 juniper berries, crushed 300ml port 200ml beef stock 3tbsp redcurrant jelly 1 cinnamon stick 100g butter A bunch of thyme, stalks removed Salt & Pepper
the plum family provides multiple offerings both on a plate and from the bottle. So get your glasses and hipflasks at the ready, as here I have a combination of recipes using both my favourite tipple and seasonal game, which thrown in together provides the makings of an indulgent autumnal dinner party for family and friends. Method • Preheat the oven to 220’C. • Put the damsons into a saucepan with a few tablespoons of water and gently cook for a few minutes until they are tender enough to remove the stones. • Mix the butter, juniper berries and thyme together, and season with salt and pepper. Rub equal amounts of the herb butter onto each bird, especially the breasts. Cut each rasher of bacon in half so there are 4 pieces per bird – lay each piece lengthways across the birds, ensuring it’s completely covered. • Place the birds in a roasting tin and cook for 15 minutes, before removing, setting aside the bacon and returning to the oven to cook for a further 15 minutes. Remove the birds from the roasting tin and cover with foil to keep warm. • Meanwhile, deglaze the roasting tin of all its juices using the port, and then pour this into a saucepan with the redcurrant jelly and cinnamon, and allow to simmer until it’s reduced by half. Add the stock and bring to the boil before turning the heat down to medium. Add the damsons and cook until tender. Season to taste. Serving suggestion Serve each partridge on a bed of savoy cabbage accompanied by dauphinoise potatoes and a generous drizzle of the mulled damson sauce. For the dauphinoise, instead of using solely potato, you could add some slices of swede and parsnip also, a sweet variation which works well with the rest of the ingredients in this dish.

Club Lounge Extraordinaire! Maverick artist Marchella De Angelis opens Ange Noir in Cheltenham Marchella De Angelis defies categorization. Rock chick, songwriter, innovative interior designer and controversial hotelier are just a few labels used to describe her. Always one step ahead of the crowd, Marchella has made a name for herself as someone who doesn’t allow convention to get in her way. Marchella moved to the UK in her teens from her native Kuala Lumpur and graduated as an interior designer. Her early years were spent in the music industry working initially as a solo artist and songwriter and later, as part of pop duo Confucius Says, who enjoyed some early chart success. She then moved into hospitality and leisure and was involved in various opportunities including the launch of Cotswold88 hotel to much acclaim. The Times described her aesthetic as “breathtaking” and the hotel won Travel and Leisure’s ‘It Hotel of 2008’ award as well as being listed in Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘Top 65 Hot Hotels of the World 2008’. Having sold the hotel in 2009, Marchella went on to launch De Angelis & Garner, a collection of wallpapers, with pop art impresario Kate Garner formerly of pop outfit Hayzee Fantayzee. Combining Kate’s work as a photographer and Marchella’s design expertise, ‘The Hedonist Collection’ is based on images of performance artist Leigh Bowery. It made the finals of the 2009 FX International Design Awards. Now after 2 years of refurbishments and concept development, Marchella has
returned to the Cotswolds and recently opened her latest venture, Ange Noir… Club Lounge Extraordinaire! With an eclectic and sensual vibe in place, Marchella once again blends historic architecture with her quirky interior trademark of old meets new. Opulence, modern fusion and style are the theme. At Ange Noir, you are invited to experience music, pleasure and taste in a setting where one can perhaps fly a little with the senses. Elements of fantasia and mischief have been applied using different texture and materials including wall art from her De Angelis & Garner collection, which is now archived by Victoria and Albert museum. Aimed at a cool and sophisticated target market, Ange Noir seeks to capture an audience pursuing elegant fun and decadence, irrespective of age. Grazing is the thought process behind the light and small a la carte menu at Ange Noir. It is inspired by Japanese fusion said to be one of the fastest growing uber trend cuisines in the world. During the week a small set lunch menu is also available. Drinks on offer are a wide array of especially handpicked beverages including rare sakes, organic wines and Champagnes, cocktails, beers, ales and spirits. At the core of the vibe is music, something very close to Marchella’s heart. Having been in the music industry for over a decade, special emphasis has
been placed on the style of music played at Ange Noir to ensure a personal involvement in its selection. Also to be launched at the venue next year is Space, an events room on the first floor with the capacity to host up to 100 people. Open to both private and corporate clients wanting to celebrate an occasion or host an event, Space and Ange Noir are available for private hire subject to availability. Why Cheltenham? Simply because Marchella finds the Cotswolds to be one of the most beautiful places in the world and believes Cheltenham is going from strength to strength. Dormy House is AA Hotel of the Year Top hotel award goes to the Cotswolds’ newest refurbished hotel and spa Dormy House in Broadway has scooped the top hotel award in England, becoming AA Hotel of the Year 2014-15. “This award is the AA’s ultimate accolade for hotels recognised as being outstanding examples in their field,” said TV presenter Fiona Bruce. “This much-loved and privatelyowned hotel has undergone a complete transformation. Great hospitality and food define the hotel of the year for England.” The award, sponsored by Temple Spa, was announced on Monday night at the climax to a glittering ceremony in London’s Grosvenor House. Afterwards, Dormy’s CEO Andrew Grahame thanked the teams who contributed to this achievement. “AA Hotel of the Year is one of the UK’s most prestigious hospitality awards and we were thrilled even to reach the final shortlist, let alone be given the title,” he said. “The AA Hotel of the Year award recognizes the huge effort everyone at the hotel has made since it re-opened. We’ve also had unending support from the Sorensen family, who have been involved throughout. “Winning Hotel of the Year for England in the AA Hospitality Awards so
soon after opening the new hotel and spa is a dream come true.” Often referred to as the industry’s Oscars, the AA Hospitality Awards recognise a few of the thousands of British hotels with an AA rating. Only one establishment in England is awarded Hotel of the Year. Previous winners include Lime Wood in the New Forest and Gravetye Manor in Sussex. Dormy House was bought by the Sorensen family in 1977 and over 36 years gained a loyal reputation for its warm country welcome. In 2013, the family invested in a multi-million pound refurbishment, with a complete interior redesign by London duo Todhunter Earle and a new destination spa by Sparcstudio. In May, the transformation was completed with the launch of a luxury sister venue, Foxhill Manor, for exclusive-
use weddings, house parties and corporate retreats. “Our original aim, to be a beacon of modern, relaxed hospitality in the Cotswolds, has struck a note with visitors from all over the world,” said Andrew Grahame. “We have received fantastic reviews in national and international press and we aim to be known as one of the finest hotels in the UK. This award is a wonderful recognition that will help us achieve that goal.” It’s been a great month for Dormy House, which was named top Spa Hotel in the Sunday Times Ultimate 100 British Hotels. The newspaper praised the spa design by Sparcstudio and the standard of massage. “This 17-century farmhouse… delivers both style and substance,” it said. “The spa interiors are cool and spacious, and the therapists excellent.” In another coup, the Dormy’s exclusive-use venue Foxhill Manor was named Most Prestigious Birthday Party Venue, one of 10 international venues out of 1,000 to win a Prestigious Star Award in London. Falling off the Ball Shane Duff tackles the problem facing professional footballers who fail to make the grade
“AFTER A PLAYER IS RELEASED AND THROWN OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD, WHO REALLY KNOWS WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE, OTHER THAN THE PLAYERS THEMSELVES?”
SOCCER
Is there enough direction and guidance for young sporting stars who don’t quite make the grade? What happens to these people, after all they are the majority? An old teammate of mine at Cheltenham was destined for big things as a footballer in the Premier League after making his debut at West Ham United at the age of 18. He was described at the time as, “a man in a hurry, destined for big things”. The way his career unfolded was certainly not what he would have imagined; he didn’t maintain a role as a Premier League player and found his way on a downward spiral which landed him a prison sentence and he is now a part time footballer in the non-league section of the football pyramid. My immediate thoughts turned towards the support network in place for young players in a similar position. Young footballers who set the world alight with their performances have no shortage of people looking out for
their welfare but are these people still around when they become surplus to requirements in a footballing sense? Will these ‘friends’, ‘managers’, ‘agents’ and ‘associates’ still give up their time and expertise for someone who is not producing the goods on the pitch; a time when they are truly needed. After a player is released and thrown out into the real world, who really knows what that feels like, other than the players themselves? This is a time when these footballers really need the support network. One player has described it as being thrown into the sea without armbands and not knowing how to swim. They end up in a world that they have no experience of, normal life. All of the things that they were once sheltered from are now coming at them and they have no idea how to cope. The ex team mate of mine was quoted as saying, “everybody makes mistakes, it’s just I made one bigger than the rest”. Former, much older footballers, often preach to their young peers about the pitfalls of life after the game but these lads can’t resonate with them, as due to their youth, they don’t remember them as players. They need to put current role models in front of them and show what can happen in reality, in the hope that it hits home and registers in their minds. Support needs to be readily available long after these players are released from clubs and their dreams are shattered. Twitter: @duffo16

Supplements that can help to optimize a better body composition UPPLEMENTATION plays an important role in achieving a better body composition, even though it may still be a grey area for many people. Supplements are not and should not be used to substitute a proper diet, and cannot replace hard and smart training and sensible healthy habits. However, seeing as most of us struggle to eat a balanced diet and cannot get all the essential vitamins and minerals from our daily food intake, added to the fact that more and more toxins are being pumped into our environment and affecting our food chain, supplements are becoming a necessity in order to achieve optimum health. Supplementation ideally needs to personalised, in consultation with a personal trainer or nutritionist; below I have listed a few supplements to aid with everyone’s training and wellness. I suggest you seek out the best quality that you can afford, invest in ones produced or manufactured in countries such as Canada for example, that have better government scrutiny on their products, as it’s illegal to produce supplements that make false claims about the benefit to your health.
and malabsorption of nutrients. This should be your first priority before taking any other supplement as if you are not absorbing your nutrients you simply are pouring away your money.
S
1: Fish oil aka the magic fluid Take a good quality omega-3 fish oil, fats rich in omega 3 help to reduce “bad cholesterol”, it can also help to reduce inflammation, increase utilization of fat stores and decrease fat storage leading to better body composition, helping balancing our modern dietary intake of omega 6 to omega 3,and countless aliment it has been shown to assist in.
2: Multi Vitamins/powder green drinks aka the backup plan If you are someone who doesn’t like their fruits and vegetables this might be a good option, not that this should be an excuse not to eat your veggies! It’s a good back up to help fill in the gaps or cover your bases with good multivitamins. Some of
the symptoms of vitamin deficiency are exhaustion, mood swings, depression, lethargy, mouth ulcers, muscle and joint pain just to name a few.
3: Zinc – the immunity mineral It’s an important mineral that acts as a cofactor for over 200 metabolic enzymes, playing a central role in our health and immunity and helps protect against infections such as the common cold and sperm production in males.
4: Probotoics – for gut health Taking a good quality live probotoic supplement has been shown to encourage the creation of B vitamins, which help energy, mood and memory. Choose ones that say the organism is alive till expiry date, not ones that were alive on the manufacturing date. It’s ideal to use when travelling abroad, after surgery and when using painkillers and antibiotics or problems with IBS and LAB.
5: HCL – the digestion aider A lack of efficient hydrochloric acids in the stomach have repercussions on your gut and system, making a lot of your food from fats, carbohydrates and protein maldigest. Good HCL levels are needed to encourage bile, prevent harmful bacteria, yeast and fungi growing in the small intestines. Symptoms are indigestion, abdominal bloating and excessive intestinal winds and can lead to leaky guts
6: Magnesium – the sleep helper It’s the fourth most common metal found in the body, with 70% stored in the bones and teeth and is needed for the function of over 300 enzymes. Every organ, muscle and kidney needs it. Anxiety, sleep problems, stress and irritability are some symptoms experienced in people who lack enough and it can help with insulin sensitivity. 7: Protein powder – the muscle builder It’s essential you replace muscle glycogen after a workout and the best way to get that is with whey or plant protein. Research has shown that it helps with the rate of protein synthesis. Muscle growth can double when protein is consumed immediately after a workout, which is a good process whether you are aiming to achieve fatloss or building muscle. Try to use the cold pressed version and ones without added sugar and bulking agents. * Most important to remember is you cannot train on a bad diet or with poor nutritional habits, so if you are not eating properly, no amount of supplements is going to create the desired body you want. New Cotswold Style writer, Claire Thayers gives her hilarious stories of what’s happening in the Cotswolds countryside
ould you write a piece for me?’ said tall, gorgeous, stylish and oh so slim Editor Emma, I nearly fell off my chair but it took me all of two minutes to say yes! Fat, fifty and …fickle…that’s me! So that was a few weeks ago, sat at a well-laden table, at a BBQ on a stunning sunny day in the Shire. A day filled with laughter and plenty of vino, all of us enjoying the last throws of summer. As for today, Bank Holiday Monday, I am now stood in filthy wellies sporting a most becoming high viz jacket whilst parking cars, in the middle of a field at the Winchcombe Country Show and the rain is lashing down. Memories of our stunning summer already a dim and distant memory but the upside? What a wonderful place to people watch! Now, that’s my love, always has been and always will be, I am easily pleased! Hands up, I go to the polo, Badminton Horse Trials, Cheltenham Races – not for the sport but to nose at the crowds and what they are wearing, their dogs, their picnics; for me every bit as enjoyable as a trip to Africa to watch the wildlife, and let’s face it, it is ‘bird watching’, just different types

“THE OVERALL IMAGE, SLUDGE GREEN AND BROWN, IS SIMPLY PERFECT CAMOUFLAGE…. FOR HIDING MUD AND GUARANTEED NOT TO FRIGHTEN A PARTRIDGE” of people in their natural habitat. I happened to be ‘car parking’ by the dog agility, the perfect place to observe the typical Cotswold’ian. Far from being a negative, the rain was now perfect for flaunting the latest green or leather boots, the obligatory headwear, be it tweed, baseball cap or leather cowboy hat and oh my, what an amazing array of wax jackets. The overall image, sludge green and brown, is simply perfect camouflage…. for hiding mud and guaranteed not to frighten a partridge. I was hugely envious (as I was sooo thirsty), of what was also hidden in those deep waxy pockets, which I could see were stuffed full of sloe gin and warming port, to ensure one could get nicely harry honkered throughout the day. Of course though, the
most important fashion icon of the show was the dog. Well trained, well turned out Spaniels and Labradors obediently fetched their ‘dummies’, whilst their similar looking owners (why is it that people end up resembling their pets?), were only too thrilled to show off their dogging skills. Perfection to behold; just one toot of the whistle and they came – now if only men could be so obedient I thought? Gripping stuff and admittedly by now I had missed parking a number of the Chelsea tractors, I had become so engrossed. Then disaster struck; the dogs started running off, there were fights (just the felines of course) and you could hear the proud doggers screaming their beloved pets names in a form of hooray shriek, jumping up and down coating their rivals from the dogging show in thick mud and all to no avail I may add. Just total and utter chaos. So next time you are out in the rain in the Cotswolds, take a look around you, and take some style tips… and for God’s sake if you happen to be unfortunate enough to fall face down in a cow pat, make sure you borrow my ultimate style icon – the high viz jacket is in huge demand.

Pets
“Autumn can be awful for pets” The seasons are changing fast and very soon autumn will be upon us! Muddy paws and wet doggy smells are just two the pet owner’s battles. A cool breeze in the air and with the nights drawing in, we ask you to consider how this can affect you and your pets. Unfortunately bonfires and fireworks are all too common throughout the coming months and they can be very frightening for most animals. Many young dogs and puppies have not become desensitised to loud noises. So now is the ideal time to try and prepare them for the firework season. There are a number of methods and products available. But with any method it is advised to start well ahead to achieve the best possible effect.
A sound CD has been developed and can be used to expose your pet to unfamiliar sounds. Used carefully over a period of time can help your pet to become accustom to loud bangs and other scary sounds. Products such as the pheromones Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats, give a calming effect helping pets relax and deal with stressful situations. These are widely available from veterinary practices where staff are fully trained in giving you advice on selecting the most appropriate method or product for your pet. Vets on the Park are running a free evening seminar on managing and avoiding firework phobia in pets. See our website www.vetsonthepark.co.uk for details and to book your place.
TOPTIPS • In the run up to bonfire night walk your dog before dark and ensure all nervous animals are kept on the lead. • Increase your pet’s feeling of security by using a pheromone product. • Provide a ‘den’, a safe place for animals to hide. An indoor kennel or crate is ideal. An alternative could be a blanket draped over a chair or table. This provides a place to hide. • Try not to leave your pets alone. But remember if your pet is displaying fearful behaviour, such as panting, pacing, shaking and whining, don’t be tempted to try and reassure them with lots of fuss and cuddles. Although it might make you feel better it could increase your pet’s anxiety. • Giving your pet a chew toy stuffed with a tasty treat can also help to distract them. • Make sure all windows and cat flaps are securely closed to stop pets escaping. • Remember to provide litter trays for cats to use. • Draw curtains and turning on the TV or radio can help to mask the noise from fireworks. • NEVER punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed.

Unbelievable!! New columnist Sandra Paul looks at some of the dreadful standards she has recently experienced in the service industry feel like Victor Meldrew sometimes when I wonder about the state of the nation and what our society has been reduced to. There will be some who know me who think I don’t just act like him, I have more of a physical resemblance to him! But isn’t it funny that once we have children and start to think about what kind of men or women we want them grow into, that we realise just how standards of behavior or even common sense has dropped. Rather than ranting about things like rubbish service or unbelievable behavior to my friends and colleagues, I now have you! This column, I hope, will be an opportunity for me to highlight the kind of behaviour we don’t want in our society. Take my recent run-in at Cheltenham Spa train station. Travelling with my 10year-old son to Harrogate, I was struggling to get through the ticket barriers with suitcases, rucksacks, handbags and laptops. Trying to shove
I
a child through the barrier whilst holding six bags is no joke. What incensed me, however, was seeing the two train guards on the other side of the barriers just rabbiting away at each other. Surely, I thought, as I struggled, the two men would come to my aid? Not because I was seeking gentlemanly behaviour, but isn’t it their jobs to help passengers? Not a chance. Once I eventually got through, I turned to the two guards and asked them why they hadn’t helped and what sort of example were they giving to my boy? “You managed didn’t you?” said one. “You didn’t ask for help, did you?” said the other. Unbelievable!! Is this really how we want things to be? Why do I even bother telling my son to help others, especially those in difficulties? The sad thing is, the train staff know they are in a job for life where the worst that could happen is a minor slap on the wrist from management or perhaps a ‘training course’. What happens if you complain? Here is what happened when I to complained to Vodaphone: I have a business account with them and phoned them to let them know I was off to work in the West Indies for several weeks.
Guess what? They cut me off once I returned. Why? “We were protecting you. Your account showed higher usage than normal,” they said. Most of us would think, why not contact me first before cutting me off to prove it’s me? I was made to pay a month and a half worth of bills before they would reinstate my account and even that took another 24 hours. Now given I run a communications agency, this sort of action is not helpful. So I complained and 2 weeks later I got a phone call to say ‘Sorry’. No reimbursement, though, for the time and stress it took to get me switched back on. No commitment from them, to refrain from doing this action again. They really couldn’t understand what the problem was, though at least the corporate muscle swung into action to apologise. I’m sure this strikes a chord with many of you. Use me to rant and send your examples of ‘unbelievable’ behaviour – or indeed great behavior, I could do with some cheering up! “Including the surprisingly beneficial effect (for you) of twerking at your Teen.”
o my middle sister has cashed in her bijou London home to head back to the North East, getting a property twice the size for half the price. In preparation for increased journeys up North, Sorted Son has resorted to watching back-to-back episodes of Geordie Shore and is now calling me “Mam”. If you’ve never seen Geordie Shore count yourself lucky; it’s full of uber tanned lads & lasses with huge hair and tattoos, nail and eyelash extensions – and that’s just the boys. Added to that, frequent fornication with one another in seedy night clubs with plenty of catfights thrown in for good measure, and you’ve essentially got the concept of the series. SS is horrified I might watch it, that my delicate senses and refined persona would be abhorred by their shenanigans. Little does he know that it was ever thus. That all this was played out in Newcastle’s
notorious Big Market 30 years ago and I was a part of it (although not a practitioner of Geordie Shore morals I hasten to add). I’ve seen more girls crouching over drains to relieve themselves than I care to remember. Bought more trebles vodkas for the price of a single than I can remember. And been ill more times from grooving on a spinning dance floor on the Tuxedo Princess (a floating nightclub ship) than I will ever remember. No, as far as my boy is concerned, his generation knows everything and all us Gen Xers are naive, ageing hipsters. Because what truly marks you as coming of age as a parent to a teenager is being the living embodiment of their embarrassment. Never mind the shifts you’ve put in; the nappy changing, sleep deprivation, potty training, food spooning, performance watching, carol singing, or rugby cheering you’ve
completed. The day you officially know your child has become a teenager is the day you’re out with them and you hear a track you like. As you tap your foot in time to the music, they grab your arm tightly and in a low voice, demand, “that if you don’t stop they will walk out and leave, because EVERYONE is looking at you”. So in case you’re unsure as to how to recognise if your tween has crossed over to teen, here’s a SurteesSpeaks spotting guide:
1) Mornings are a good indicator. Whilst your cherubic 9yr old might have bounced out of bed, Teens, like vampires, can’t bear sunlight – (why d’you think so many of them become Goths?) This is balanced by a sharp upturn and increase in appetite and energy levels about 10pm. Just as you’re winding down... 2) Their growth rate means every time you sit down to dinner, your crockery is in danger with constant glass and plate smashing accidents. Pack away your best dinner service and head to Ikea for some disposable tableware. 3) They hate views. Where they once admired the scenery and enthused about nature, now they just stare at their phones, photographing their knees and instagramming it to their mates – #bored. 4) A beaming smile is replaced with constant curled lip of disdain. Accept that your opinion is never useful – or indeed required. 5) For the record, they didn’t ask to be born. Go with it, it gets easier. But if all else fails and they still won’t tidy their room, threaten to show their friends your Miley Cyrus twerking moves – they’ll be grabbing a duster before you can say wrecking ball...

Who says it’s all Glamour? hen I tell people I have to travel a lot for my job (as a sports reporter), the assumption is that I have a glamorous, jet-setting career. Much like.... say.... Ed Sheeran. If it weren’t so ridiculous, I’d have a chuckle at that. Start with the fact that I’m generally travelling to a horse show and the level of glamour is slightly reduced. I say only slightly, because most of these international shows can be quite upmarket and some are positively luxurious. Nevertheless, it’s still not a pop concert. Add in to the mix a very short turnaround in completely opposite time zones and the jet lag empathy removes another little bit of glitz. Mention heavy recording kit and you’ve got another lowglam ingredient... meaning that by the time we get to Economy Class flights, most people are instead pitying my world hopping profession and offering me a lie down. Last month, it was the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy.... 16 days of sport and ceremonies attended by thousands of journalists, athletes, grooms and fans from all over the world. Sport aside, a couple of my professional highlights included attempting a voice over in a broom cupboard – for the acoustics, which turned out to be pants – leaving me to finally record it in the back of a car with a tweed coat over my head... and the following day... sitting in the poshest, (and hottest) hospitality tent I’ve ever seen, with a camera crew, waiting for a rider for over an hour, in 35 degrees with no air conditioning. For the show jumping competitors – and reporters - it was then a pretty much immediate voyage from France to Canada for the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’, another major world competition and one leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Hello jet lag. Packing can be a challenge too – Normandy saw torrential downpours for the Three Day Eventing, meaning mud up to the top of wellies, trench coats, hats and a bedraggled overall appearance. By

130 OCTOBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
This month, Kate Justice discusses the perils of being a roving sports reporter
the time the Driving and Jumping started, it was 25 degrees and brilliant sunshine... shorts, shades and sandals were required. Incorporate a return flight to the UK and with only 24 hours in Blighty before it was back to the airport, destination Calgary... and the packing challenge is doubled. All this before we even glimpse the almost biblical weather Calgary is famous for. All four seasons in just one day is not unusual and in fact we all arrived to an Arctic storm and 12 inches of snow. Everyone rushed out to buy more blankets for the horses and wellie warmers for themselves, but within a couple of days we were back to glorious sunshine and summer dresses. I’m now staying in the UK for a few weeks, admittedly I will be in a hotel near Birmingham for some of it – Horse of The Year Show is imminent... and there
are two more foreign shows before Christmas but being at home right now is glorious. There were a couple of minor dramas on my return, which slightly tarnished my homecoming: The airport parking people had crashed my car (yes I know!) and they are trying to fix it, meaning I drove home in someone else’s people carrier. The other thing I’m facing is dogs and cats with a parasite problem and a hornet’s nest in the attic. I want to be in and out (of the house), all at the same time. BUT at least the weather is predictable and the tea here is served with milk, not lemon.
