EDITOR’S FOREWORD

W

ELCOME to our September issue. This will be my final issue with Cotswold Style as I am off to pursue my love of writing and embark on a new chapter in my life. Exciting times lay ahead. In light of this, I felt it fitting to give you a mixture of my favourite things: fashion, interiors and weddings. The wedding feature (page 98) showcases an array of dreamy dresses that really stand out from the crowd that exude grace and glamour. I’m sure you will agree, the selection offers something for every stylish bride-to-be. The wedding lust-haves (page 106) will fill you with inspiration that are all from our very special Cotswolds wedding suppliers. From cakes to invitations and photography to illuminated letters (so gorgeous!) – you will be sure to find every element for your day. Our cover model, Noella Coursaris-Masters, is one of those women who have it all; brains and beauty, oh and a simply gorgeous family, too! Read about how Noella uses her position to encourage the world to be more involved and interested in the Congo, her country of birth. Read about her inspiring journey on page 16. Fashion goes further than the clothes we wear, I particularly enjoy (as I’m sure many of you do), shopping for my home. Playing with textures, colours and accessories can instantly update the look of a room and interiors often reflect the personalities of those who inhabit them. Take a look at our Easy Elegance feature (page 56) and see how you can add a touch of effortless elegance to your home. Of course, I couldn’t leave you without directing you towards one of my favourite parts of the magazine – the travel section. This month, Lucy Garbutt, introduces us to a place I have always wanted to visit – Costa Rica. So, join me as we let’s get lost in Lucy’s mesmirising descriptions of this perfect paradise... Before I go, I wanted to also say thank you to all of our wonderful readers. It has been a joy developing the magazine for you to enjoy. I have always enjoyed reading your emails over the past few months, commenting on your favourite features – because that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day – keeping you, our readers happy and ever so stylish!

The winner will model in a fashion shoot for the magazine and have the chance of winning £300 of Raging Bull clothes, together with an overnight stay at the stunning Ellenborough Park with a meal for two. House of Fraser will feature a special window display during our search for the Raging Bull Star, displaying some of the images sent to us. The winner will be chosen from an invited short list at the store by a panel including the House of Fraser store manager and Phil Vickery. Images can be emailed to office@stylemagazines.co.uk with your contact details by October 21st 2014.

Meet Noella... We speak to Noella CoursarisMasters about balancing family life in The Cotswolds with campaigning tirelessly for her foundation in the Congo

ur cover model, Noella Coursaris-Masters is many things: an international model, humanitarian, wife and a mother, who counts many celebrities as friends. Having moved to the Cotswolds just over a year ago, Noella has fully embraced life in our county. The fashion shoot that you will see in further pages had been in the planning stages since February and has been one that I have been extremely excited about. We are also keen to tell you more about this intriguing lady and introduce you to Noella. The Georges Malaika Foundation (GMF), a school for girls in the Congo, where Noella originates from, which she founded has changed the life of many children. By working between London and New York, Noella has gained an international following. Support for her foundation has derived from likes of the Ben Affleck Foundation and Khaliah Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, to name just a few. Although modeling is no longer her main job, she says: “I always have and always will enjoy modeling. If it benefits the organisation I would absolutely continue to model”. Continuing, she adds, “It’s so important that our girls receive the best education they can, meaning they have greater choices and opportunities in their lives – something that we can often take for granted”. The foundation, Noella explains, “is a network of international volunteers we only pay the local staff. It’s teamwork that keeps it running and we strive to create a high quality of education. We hope to see the next leaders of tomorrow come from our schools to create a better world. It is only one

Real Life school but of a very high quality”. The school is free of tuition costs and has been built gradually over the years with support from volunteers, donations and worldwide support. Initially, there were only 104 girls in the school but this September, there will be 200 girls – what an achievement. The foundation extends into the community, operating three wells meaning that more than 8,000 people a year are provided with clean water. Noella returns to the Congo frequently, her son has even visited there many times over the past few years, which must be such a good grounding for him, “I always love being able to go and see the girls and see the impact that our organization is making, my husband and son love it there too. Our office is based in New York, which I, of course, adore. This also means I am able to go spend a good amount of time there regularly”. So what made Noella move to Cheltenham after living a jet setters lifestyle in New York, Germany and

London? Smiling, she answers, “We mainly moved here due to my husband’s work. The city is an incredible place to raise a family. I want to give my children a well rounded upbringing in a culturally diverse place, and what a beautiful area of the UK to do so”. With two young children, it must be fairly difficult to juggle family life alongside her foundation and husband’s work, which often takes him abroad yet she doesn’t seem fazed about it at all: “My husband and I have to coordinate our schedules to make sure we aren’t traveling at the same time. However, my kids also travel a lot with me, which is always great”. From our meeting, it became quite clear that she is a woman on a powerful mission; she cares deeply for people and about the world. You would initially think that modeling would give someone a feeling of self-importance – not Noella. In fact, I asked her that if she could be known for anything, what it would be. Of course, her response was as I should have anticipated: “Being a caring person as well as a good mother. I want to be remembered for the fact that I care very deeply about everyone and want to help better the world. My kids mean the world to me and I want to be remembered for my unconditional love for them and for sure for a stronger Africa and world, coming together”. Well, I think she can be sure of that! MARKET COMMENT With the Autumn market fast approaching, we are anticipating that activity will pick up quickly once the school term starts and that buyers will be out in force to secure a home prior to, ideally, Christmas. The papers are commenting daily on the impending increase in interest rates and the forthcoming election and these two factors do have an effect on the market however the main points remain the same. These are that the quality of buyers is excellent and the stock of properties is low. In particular, there is a shortage of good family homes between ÂŁ700,000 and ÂŁ1 million and this is where the majority of our applicant database is focused. This family home market, where buyers are looking to stay put for the next 10 years is incredibly under stocked and prospective sellers may well not be aware of the huge demand we are experiencing. Our other market places remain steady and

consistent and the financial advice we can offer to assist purchasers is first class and can certainly speed up the process that has been dramatically slowed by the new legislation on affordability. So the overall message is very positive to house sellers, sensible pricing is still key but with the applicant database at its strongest ever, if you are considering a move and would like confidential advice, please call us to arrange a market appraisal appointment. t this year’s Three Counties Show back in June, I was privileged enough to take a sneaky peek behind the scenes with our incredibly knowledgeable stockman, Mike Caunter. He took me on a tour of the cow sheds where some of the country’s finest beasts were on display. They were being washed and blow dried, polished and back combed ready for their parade around the ring. A mix of farming and pampering… I was in my element! This is where I first clapped eyes on the very unique looking British Blue. These are the Kim Kardashians of the cattle world, sporting the finest and most defined rear end on any cow… anywhere! Mike and I spoke a lot about introducing one of these show-stoppers into our Farm Park. I’ve never seen anything like it and so I knew our visitors would be just as impressed as I was. British Blues originate from Belgium and come in three colours; pure white; pie-blue, which means grey and white patches; or pie-black, which is black and white. These impressive animals have a muscle yield 20% higher than other breeds of beef cows and a decreased fat content. This would usually mean that the meat is less tender, but that’s apparently not so with the British Blue. It’s argued that the large number of muscle fibres make it just as tender. Beef is my favourite meat, so I’m going to attempt to source some to try myself – if you’re following me on Twitter, hopefully you’ll find out how I get on! Here in England, the British Blues are cross-bred with our dairy cows. Holsteins or Friesians are usually very lean with little meat on them, so cross-breeding with the bulky British Blues helps to

Rich in History, Rich in Business... Eric Barton takes a lingering look at the business community thriving at Gloucestershire Airport

n this months issue we activate our radar to highlight the many and varied businesses who operate from this historical airfield. It’s an airfield that’s steeped in aviation history, now providing a unique backdrop to some hugely exciting and successful companies. It really is the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker… and of course the aviator. In this supplement you’ll find an intriguing and beguiling host of local companies who have ‘set up shop’ within the airfield confines. And all of them just a short wingspan from the

36 SEPTEMBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES TANDY runway. These businesses are there by design, not by accident or because it’s just cost effective. It’s an ideal place to locate a business as the transport infrastructure is second to none, providing links to motorways and major conurbations. With only a 3 minute drive from the M5 and A40, the Midlands and the South West are all within easy reach. The history of Gloucestershire Airport is a rich tapestry of achievement and endeavour, playing its part in WW2 together with providing a unique business locale. In 1931 Gloucestershire

Airport began life as Down Hatherley Airfield, on a site adjacent to its present location. During WW2 it served as an RAF training base. During the 1960s and 70s, the airport became the home of the Skyfame Museum. This was one of the first museums in Britain to dedicate itself to the preservation of Second World War aircraft. Some of its aircraft were flyable and the annual Skyfame air display was one of the great highlights of the airport calendar. In the 1990s, the airport became an important helicopter centre, with Police Aviation Services and Bond Air Services establishing their

000 Staverton Intro DPS September 14:Layout 1

headquarters there. Zooming forward…in 1993, Staverton was renamed Gloucestershire Airport to reflect its increasing prominence as the business aviation centre for the county. So, history lesson over what’s on offer at the airport these days? Today it’s a thriving business and recreation airport handling around 90,000 movements each year with over forty five businesses based on the airport complex. The airport boasts more than 250,000 sq ft of hangarage, much of this newly built or redeveloped and less than 10 years old. There’s also a vast array of offices and warehouse space, together with of course the main terminal, a pilot shop, a restaurant and car hire. Kim Davenport, Business Development Manager, Gloucestershire Airport commented, ‘in 2013 we were voted the best general aviation airport in the UK by the Airport Operators Association. This was a huge feather in our cap and reflects not just our handling and operations as an airport but also the commercial side of our operation’. Kim went onto further comment, ‘our success here is in part due to the fantastic support we receive from the forty five plus businesses that are located here. The award is also a reflection on just how important a role these companies play in the overall success of the airport’. Gloucestershire Airport is a true hub of commerce that makes a contribution to the local business

26/08/2014

16:34

Page 37

economy and through the various businesses based there is also a fair-sized local employer. The myriad of business represented at Gloucestershire Airport is as unique as it is varied. There’s the Aviator Bar and Restaurant which overlooks the runway and a great place to watch aeroplanes taking off and landing. Couple this to a vast array of companies that provide everything from engineering solutions through to helicopter hire,

“THE AWARD IS ALSO A REFLECTION ON JUST HOW IMPORTANT A ROLE THESE COMPANIES PLAY IN THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF THE AIRPORT’“ flight schools and aircraft charter and you have a rich soup of interesting companies providing a host of incredible services and products. Finding your way around is easy as the airfield is well laid out and neatly signposted. So you won’t get lost. The car parking is more than ample at all the business locations, enabling you to park right outside for any meetings or visits. And remember this is just 5 minutes drive outside Cheltenham and 10 minutes drive from Gloucester. It’s

always the case that you don’t realise what’s on your doorstep until you trip over it. Last July the airport had their annual charity day. It’s a good mirror of how the airport and the companies based there take their community involvement seriously, working together to put on a wonderful day that’s free to visit. After all it’s a community within a community. The charity day was huge success with many special activities that had something for all the family to enjoy and raised a few bob for the Fly2Help charity. So you see Gloucestershire Airport has come a long way since the heady days of flappers, bi-planes and the like and is in a sense now a ‘business enabler’, providing a home for a strong seam of local, national and international companies. This supplement we hope will showcase that activity and raise a blip on the radar for our brilliant local airport. Oh… and if you fly from Gloucestershire Airport the car parking is free. Now that’s got to be better than Birmingham or Bristol!

The airport is also home to around 160 based aircraft, ranging from single-seat, homebuilt ultra lights, to multimillion pound, state-of-the-art executive jets. As part of the other services on offer at the airport, flight lessons and training plays a big part in the operation, with every aspect of flying training available on site. renowned for his role in international rugby, aimed to offer more than just a package tour, and visualized offering clients more of a sports experience than anything else.

Cheltenham Patterns The company was originally formed in 1947 with the aim of supplying the foundry industry with wood pattern equipment. Trade at that time was mostly tool industry, but with the increase in fabrication this market was seen to be decreasing. The situation in the South West of England meant that the skills of their employees could readily transfer to work on prototype models for the aircraft industry and the area’s developing need for close engineering tolerances. In 1983 the primary company was destined for liquidation until it was saved by eight existing employees forming a ‘cooperative’. One of the eight still works for the company with the other seven having reached retirement ensuring that Cheltenham Patterns are moving forward with the times. We still work closely with large and small Aerospace and engineering companies in the area, offering professional help whether it be design or manufacturing.

Established in 1986, Executive Aviation Services is a family owned and run business, specialising in providing clients with the very highest quality solutions for all their aviation needs. Based at Gloucester Airport, Executive Aviation Services is able to provide leading solutions for integrated business aviation services in the South West. Offering a range of services, from consultancy and advice, to comprehensive maintenance and management services, Executive Aviation Ltd. are able to satisfy almost any requirement. At Executive Aviation Ltd. we aim to offer a simple variety of services that allow our clients to choose and customize the aviation company and management package that is right for them and their individual needs.

major commercial helicopter companies around the world. In keeping with Bristow Academy’s ‘two-decade tradition’ of providing helicopter flight training to the highest standards, the Bristow Gloucestershire IR and type rating programmes are managed and taught by professional pilots with many years and thousands of hours of operational experience in the real world of commercial helicopter operations.

Aeros Bristow Academy The Bristow Academy Gloucestershire campus specialises in training pilots for the Single Pilot Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (IR). Worldwide there is a strong need for highly-skilled pilots capable of safely operating in challenging environments. These environments often require flight into instrument meteorological conditions where highquality training and good judgment ensuring optimal safety and flight efficiency is a must. We have been training professional pilots to take their place in the world of commercial helicopter aviation since 1987. Through three campuses on two continents, Bristow Academy has trained hundreds of pilots now working for

Aeros has been recognised for many years as one of the leading flight training schools in the UK offering both commercial training for those looking to take up aviation as a career, and training for the enthusiasts to attain the private pilot’s license. Established in 1985, Aeros flight training now has bases at Gloucester, Coventry, Nottingham, Wellesbourne, Cardiff and Cranfield. We operate a large and expanding fleet, which includes a Cherokee, 4 tomohawks, 14 Warriors, 5 Arrows, 1 Seneca, 2 HR 200 Robins and 2 Cessna 152s, not to mention our latest edition to our fleet, 2 Tecnam P2006T Twins, 1 Tecnam P2002s and 3 DA42s. For those who do not want to fly straight and level all the time, we also have a fully aerobatic aircraft – a Slingsby T67 Firefly – Aeros Extreme! All our aircraft are strictly maintained by our in-house EASA 145 and Part M subpart G & I approved maintenance company Aeros Engineering, who are able to respond rapidly to any technical issues. This ensures that our students are provided with the utmost attention to safety and also benefit from minimum downtime. Words by Beth Mahoney Photography by James Tandy

Passion & Promise… Eric Barton goes sky high with Executive Aviation Services Flying is still sexy. There’s no two ways about it. It’s the most glamorous way of getting around the planet. And travelling in your own aircraft is as sexy as it gets. Here’s another choice though; be herded like unwanted cattle, endure the horrors of airport security, then find out the flight is late and miss your meeting in say, Paris? Sound familiar? Or you could leave that appalling scrum behind and indulge yourself by boarding your very own aircraft. Established in 1986, Executive Aviation Services (EAS), a family-run business aims to provide the platinumplus solution for integrated business aviation services in the South West. In fact Daughter Christie Turner is the Operations Director and Son James is one of the pilots. It’s a bold statement but one that’s full of passion and promise. Whether clients are looking for consultancy, advice regarding the selection and acquisition of new aircraft, the flexibility of chartering an executive aircraft or aircraft management services, EAS are all too aware of the need to over-deliver on the promise of meeting the high standards they’ve set. The Chairman of EAS is Captain Peter Turner (pictured). His love of flying is immediately apparent. After an RAF Scholarship the die was cast. It’s not just a job, it’s what defines him. He has no less than 15000hrs flying time behind him and has flown everything from gliders through helicopters to jets and even Spitfires. It’s an incredible record of variation and sets the scene for both experience and a passion for all things airborne. Peter comments, ‘EAS has been twenty five years in the making. It’s a business that focuses on providing a blue chip service for all our customers,

whether they’re aircraft owners, charterers’, pilots under training or handling aircraft on behalf of clients’. In 2013 EAS had their busiest year since 2008 and the 2014 revenues have already burst through that ceiling by a long way. Business Aviation provides industry and commerce with speed and flexibility of operation which the rigid schedules and time-wasting routines of airline travel deny to those who need to travel quickly, cost-effectively and by the most direct route. The services EAS provides enables busy executives to complete trips in a day which otherwise would involve the frustrations and expense of overnight stops. It’s no coincidence that many of the world’s most profitable companies operate their own aircraft and there are well in excess of 200 corporately owned aircraft in the UK. See my point? Kyle Millar, Business Development Manger, EAS said, ‘we’re all about delivering a quality service. It’s not just about chasing the dollar, we’re more tuned towards our client’s specific needs and want to make sure that we accommodate them. After all’, he also adds, ‘we’re in the bespoke business when it comes to flying and whether its sourcing an aircraft for a client and managing that aircraft for them or simply organising a trip from A to B for a group of executives we always strive to over deliver’.

At EAS they have four aircraft currently on the fleet; king of the turbo props, the King Air and two ‘sleek as you like’ Citation Executive Jets. It’s a formidable stable of aircraft intended to satiate the needs of every client. And as a key point these aircraft can get into much smaller airports where the runway is limited, so no need to follow the herd to the large international airports. Captain Peter Turner goes on to further comment, ‘in early 2015 we’ll be moving into bigger, newer offices here on the airport complex. It heralds a new era for EAS and will beckon a new period of measured grow. We have an incredible team here, all dedicated to providing our clients with a superb service second to none’. He goes on to say, ‘we look at every new opportunity and embrace diversity whenever we can’. The EAS approach is simple; integrate their services allowing clients to choose and customize the aviation consultancy, management and/or charter package that’s right for them. Executive air charter has moved from being a one-off extravagance to a justifiable business expense, allowing total control of our valuable time without the stresses and inflexibility of commercial airlines. Something EAS are extremely good at providing. At Executive Aviation Services their passion is a given…the promise is sure to follow! The World on a plate…

Eric Barton meets up with Venatour’s travel guru and England rugby hero Gareth Chilcott

Some say the World is your oyster. Now that glimour of optimism can be applied to most things, save perhaps oil rig fires, natural disasters and famine. However when it comes to sports travel one local company can offer sports packages that are beyond dreams. Cheltenham- based company Venatour is a sporting experience company offering competitively priced holidays while also providing escorted tours to select sporting events globally. With the all-important personalised touch they create and deliver select but unique tours that offer more than just travel. Venatour was set up by former Bath, England and British Lion, Gareth Chilcott. It’s a business that’s built on people and personalities aiming to deliver a very personal experience coupled to a trip of a lifetime. Not a bad philosophy at all. Gareth Chilcott commented, ‘after 20 plus years working in the sports travel business, I felt the role was moving away from a smaller dedicated business to a more mass market scenario. I felt there was an opening to get back to a more personal approach as it used to be’. The company has expanded rapidly over its first 18 months and has several official appointments to its credit. These include the 2013 British Lions Tour to Australia, the 2013/14 Ashes Tour, The Ryder Cup 2014 and Hong Kong 7s 2014. Venatour also offer specific tailor made trips for individuals and groups to other events of their choice. At this point Alister Strahan, Managing Director at Venatour also commented, ‘what really makes the job special is meeting people you would never otherwise meet. Likeminded sports fanatics travelling the world together is very special and whether it’s a short trip across to Dublin or a long Lions tour ‘down under’, friendships are forged that wouldn’t otherwise be possible’. Six Nations rugby weekends, event hospitality and the USA Sevens are all examples of events that

Venatour have provided unique sporting experiences to… and if you fancy pulling on your boots they can organise school, club and university playing tours to all four corners of the globe for a number of sports. Having worked in the sports travel industry since his retirement from international rugby, Gareth felt he wanted to offer not just standard package tours, but more of an experience. Gareth goes on to further comment, ‘the excitement of starting up a new business from scratch was great, and the success of the Lions tour and of course winning the series was the icing on the cake’. Gareth was lucky enough to travel the world during his rugby career, playing prop for Bath for 16 years, gaining his first cap for England against Australia in 1984, then playing in the 1987 Rugby World Cup and touring with the British & Irish Lions to Australia in 1989. It was the experiences he had on these tours that he’s taken into his sports travel career and it’s these opportunities he now brings to Venatour’s clients. As in any successful company the people make the difference and Gareth further adds, ‘we have skilled professional staff who pride themselves in being able to give our

clients the best possible trip whichever sporting event it may be. They all enjoy the new challenges that a progressive company like ours can offer them’. The future for Venatour does indeed sound rosy and extremely buoyant. Gareth Chilcott also remarks, ‘we have a good strategic plan for the company, ensuring that the company will grow in a professional manner with our clients being in the forefront of all our plans’. He goes on to finally add,’ Rugby World Cup 2015 being in England is fantastic and with England being amongst the favourites for the cup, this only adds to the excitement. The opportunity for Venatour is huge and one we are looking forward to as an Official Sub-Agent for the tournament’. It does look like if you want that ‘oyster’, then Venatour could easily put in on a plate for you.

Splendour & Style

O

Elegance conjures up visions of Grace Kelly, Coco Chanel and sweeping staircases, so how can we incorporate this look in our homes? WORDS BY RACHEL VINCENT

ne overpowering similarity that I find encompasses the term ‘elegance’ is that they are all synonymous for being beautifully simplistic in their design or appearance. Of course, elegance is all about showcasing what’s naturally appealing and not “gilding the lily”, so to speak. Opting for elegance in a home is a personal choice; some people prefer a bold, functional living space that simply works with their everyday lives, some like to create a treasure chest of a home that encases them in a world of mementos from their journey through life. If you long to create an opulent home that could rival any of those in Hollywood, then it is about creating a space that encapsulates the essence of calm, serenity and balance. Natural Beauty You will need to avoid overpowering features and instead, assemble furniture and accessories that complement one another. A single cushion, for example, sitting proudly on a chair can create an air of elegance in a room. Be sure to remember that any accessories or furniture will need to be aesthetically beautiful. Therein lies the key to creating elegance – when something is naturally beautifully it will stand apart from the crowd, so be ruthless and get rid of your tat and showcase the best of what you have, less is very much more. Timeless Textiles There are always a number of aspects to consider when creating a living space and if elegance is your goal, then considering the following will help you achieve it.

• Floor length drapes – A classic design staple. Sumptuous and beautiful fabric falling graciously to the floor will frame your windows to perfection.

• Table lamps – These are a must for creating a soft and elegant ambience. To go a step further, ensure your lamps have high quality silk shades for the ultimate in luxury lighting. • Cushions – A beautiful cushion is worth its weight in gold when it comes to creating elegant interiors. Use cushions to create interest and individuality in a space and indulge your creativity – there’s nothing worse than a cheap and uninspiring cushion.

• Rugs & throws – Adding layers of different textures will create warmth and interest. Choose natural materials, good quality wools and cashmere, which will give your room that added comfort factor. Petal Power Who can deny the power of a beautiful vase of flowers in a room – they can light up even the souless of rooms. Do you fancy maxing out your flower power? We thought so. Choose vases and indeed flowers in line with the height of the ceilings, the

guide is the taller the ceiling the taller the vase and flowers need to be- it’s all about proportion and creating balance. John Lewis sell a huge selection of vases to suit all. For me, plain glass in a simple design will always remain timeless and provide you with a classic, neutral base in which to create your display. Choice of flowers – For rooms with high ceilings, choose Trumpet Lilies (far more elegant than the commonly found, Stargazer Lily) or Gladioli, which are exceptional value and always look striking – both will give height and presence in a room. Short stemmed Roses and blooms will look pretty and elegant for those with less ceiling height. Peony, the cream of the imitation flower industry (www.peony.com), do an amazing range of plants and flowers that are great to place in spaces which would benefit from a floral addition but don’t necessarily demand fresh flowers. They do fantastic orchids which are the ideal accessory for any hall, landing or guest room. The Essence of Elegance Creating a home is about creating a space that feels calm and balanced. It should be a space that you look forward to spending time in, a place you can retreat to and feel safe. Elegance is to me about balance and beauty, there’s no point in having a room full of furniture that looks fabulous but is so uncomfortable that it doesn’t allow you to relax. Easy elegance is laid back stylesimple lines and textures, uncluttered and calm, beautifully balanced and like all things considered elegant, it needs no explanation. DESIGN THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF‌ We speak to Barnbury Home & Design and find out about their unique service and the exclusive brands they offer Tell us how Barnbury Home & Design came about? We both come from a retail and design background and have always wanted to open a showroom to showcase good design. We had a small showroom as part of Thirty Two, and once we'd sold decided it was time to open something larger. You owned the Cheltenham hotel, Thirty Two, which had rave reviews on Mr & Mrs Smith, how do you move on from that legacy? We had a great 6 years running the hotel and were very lucky to receive such good reviews and a loyal following. But we knew the time was right for us to go (almost) back to our roots and fingers crossed we can achieve such a level again. dislike. In fact, the Beckhams and their budget would be great!

Barnbury is quite unique in its approach, how do you manage to combine so many elements and still offer such a high standard of service? We both believe in the business and we only stock things we love. So it's easy to be passionate! Are there any trends that you have noticed over the past few months – can you predict any trends in upcoming months? Un-lacquered brass seems to be making a comeback, and the market for good quality mid century furniture is definitely strong. Where do you source your artwork from and what made you opt for more abstract pieces? We're currently working with Ian James who owned and ran Martins Gallery before it closed earlier this year. His look is strongly influenced by the Far East, which is something that sits well in our

showroom. Pieces are sourced locally and further afield. We also want to gain a reputation for showing items that are more contemporary. Be it art, sculpture, ceramics or glass. What has been your most exciting design project? Each project is exciting in its own way and every client is different. Working with Jon and Helen Howe from Lumiere was great, and we're hoping to get a new project in Johannesburg soon. Who would be your dream couple to design for? A couple who agree on what they like and

What would our readers not necessarily know about you? Jonathan (Parkin) trained as an interior designer in Madrid and loves any new gadget. Jonathan Sellwood is a complete technophobe who loves nothing more than a circuit class at 6.30am. What exclusive brands do you offer clients? We offer some exciting and unique brands, including: William Yeoward, Dr Vranjes, Kelly Hoppen Shutters, Cire Trudon, hand crafted leather items from Italy and lighting from Paris and custom made furniture. We also stock Coles and Son Wallpapers, Osbourne & Little. Do come and take a look. The Barnbury Showroom 14 North Street, Winchcombe, Cheltenham, GL54 5LH www.barnbury.com Tel: 01242 300330

Door hardware specialist Oxford Ironmongery has expanded with the opening of a new shop selling timber doors in Marston. The new outlet, called Oxford Doors & Security, will display beautiful internal and external timber doors in a realistic setting so that customers can see what their new door will look like in situ. The showroom is the only one of its kind in the area and builds on Oxford Ironmongery’s 33 years of experience in the door hardware market. As well as the aesthetics of the doors themselves, trained, experienced staff will be on hand to advise customers with their security, safety and accessibility requirements.

The showroom displays a full range of glazed, semi-glazed and unglazed doors in contemporary and traditional designs all in natural timber. The full range of stylish door furniture for which Oxford Ironmongery is well-known will also be on show and specialist security products can also be selected to keep homes safe and secure. Julian Newman, Director of Oxford Ironmongery is convinced that customers will be pleasantly surprised by the doors on display at the new Oxford Doors & Security shop. “The timber door offering has really come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years and these doors are now manufactured to engineering standards. The old contraction and expansion issues are long gone; the modern timber door is made in a technically advanced factory where attention to detail is the absolute norm” he says. Behind the Garden Gate Our Cheltenham based media horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith turns the wrought iron handle of the garden gate in this new series and takes us on a journey to some of our most fabulous gardens IGHNAM COURT, grand and glorious, a stone’s throw from the city of Gloucester and venue for many a happy Christmas party as a child. My parents knew the owner in the 1980s: Roger Smith and he kindly (and maybe unwisely!) opened his doors every Christmas to the toddling off-spring of many he knew for a festive fandango. In those days I can’t say I was the least bit interested in what lay outside in the many acres of gardens, my primary concern was whether the large gentleman in red had deemed me to be well behaved enough to receive a gift or whether he had been watching whilst Juliet and I attempted to tip the front row congregation off their pew at the Berkhamstead School Carol Concert! These days I’m pleased to say that

although Father Christmas is still a major part of my life, gardens are also of equal interest. So it was with great pleasure that I paid a recent visit to the current owner of Highnam Court, Roger Head, to delve into his borders. This man has turned the once overgrown grounds into a horticultural heaven fit for a palace. The backdrop of the stunning 1658 house embraces the formal layout surrounding it like a cape falling gracefully over the shoulders of the finest silk evening dress. Clipped box as expected in a setting such as this is a frequent site, with a parterre and knot garden both taking pride of place either side of the dwelling – designed of course to be viewed from above. Grey slate is an eye-catching filler in between the knotted variegated box design. Clipped yews form giant triangles

marching away from the house across the lawn, rather like traffic cones turned green with envy for their master’s home! The East garden gives the first hint of the wonders of wood to come and gives another meaning to household recycling. Any trees that die here at Highnam aren’t disposed of completely but given a new lease of life, the base of their trunks being left to the skilled hands of a wood carver. Where once stood yews, now we see an owl and birds of prey, and throughout the garden you stumble across other fine examples: a sofa and toadstools to name but a few. Turn another corner and you could be transported to the world of Goldilocks and the three bears – only the wooden bear is singular and I have red hair, but I still feel like a player in a fairytale garden. The Winter garden gave me my first

glance of a mass of sedum – in bud on my visit like a carpet of green sea urchins. These really are great plants, the lush green stems and buds in summer and the dusky pink/red blooms throughout autumn. Their use a little further on in the run up to a dainty red bridge is stunning! Water is abundant in the grounds, from the lower lake, which Roger created around ten years ago, to the Monet Garden, complete with Giverny style bridge which in early summer is covered with wisteria. Impressive gunnera greet any mortals who cross the bridge, acting like giant umbrellas for the wildlife below. Now usually my favourite part of any

garden is a certain plant, but I have to say in this case, my heart has been stolen by a tall sophisticated obelisk, well quite a few actually. Installed in the garden a few years ago and standing like multi-coloured soldiers to attention, these offer colour, reflection and beauty. A modern feature that just enhances the traditional surroundings as images of giant trees and ancient walls bounce from one obelisk to the next. The oil like rainbow colours catch the light in the most remarkable ways, just imagine how many pots of gold you could find here on a sunny day! Not that Roger Head needs to search, this is one garden that in my opinion has already reached Gloucestershire gold!

COSTA RICA A GARDEN OF EDEN

Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt journeyed through Costa Rica’s tropical paradise of natural treasures on a recent trip osta Rica is a treasure trove of tropical gems with the resplendent Quetzal, stunning Scarlet Macaws, hilarious Howler Monkeys and surreal walking trees being some of my favourites. Though small in size the country boasts natural treasures galore within each diverse ecosystem and unique microclimate. There are towering primary rainforests festooned with tumbling waterfalls, steamy cloud forest paradises of exotic epiphytes, dry forests with emerald thermal rivers and jutting active volcanoes with gigantic craters, steaming geysers and hot bubbling mud. Costa Rica is blessed with two coastlines and miles of wonderful beaches. On the Pacific side the coastal rainforest plunges to the waves and the Caribbean coast boasts classic turquoise calm. One of the best ways to experience the wonderful flora and fauna is by simply trekking into one of the numerous National Parks to discover unique species in their natural habitat. Horseback riding or quad biking is on offer throughout the country and is an ideal way to explore the foothills surrounding the numerous volcanoes. Adventure is part of the experience, with a mandatory adrenaline ‘fix’ being propelled across the surface of the rainforest canopy on a zip line. On a par with this is waterfall rappelling which involves following a river hidden deep in the rainforest and then abseiling down cliff-faces attached to a rope and harness! One of my favourite adventures was a rafting journey on the Pacuare River which was both sublime and thrilling in equal measures. Stretches of coffeecoloured river rippled beneath us as the raft gently ambled downstream allowing time to take in the tranquil surroundings. The rainforest sky-rocketed from either side of the riverbank in a tangle of tropical beauty, with crystal waterfalls

80 SEPTEMBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

plummeting from great heights, as a giant Blue Morph butterfly flashed turquoise blue wings as it flapped past. Suddenly a dart of iridescent green from a kingfisher and the silhouette of a toucan soaring high across the void from one side of the river to the opposite bank completed the picturesque scene. Peaceful daydreaming was interrupted by urgent instructions from our guide, Jorge, as we approached a narrow canyon tumbling with alarmingly raging rapids requiring urgent paddle-power - “left back, right forwards” more orders were fired out in quick succession. The rapids were much more exciting than we’d imagined and we soon realised that Jorge’s detailed briefing was essential! Real adventure with unreal style can be found at Pacuare Lodge. The property comprises a sprinkle of beautiful thatched jungle villas set within the backdrop of towering primary rainforest. The open air design of the villas gives the feeling of sleeping in the heart of the

rainforest, but with the luxury of crisp white sheets, running hot water and gourmet dining by candlelight. Zip wiring the canopy and waterfall rappelling are exhilarating activities to experience in the immediate area. One morning we zip-lined to the 100ft high ‘Nest’ for breakfast and abseiled away from the table following a sumptuous gourmet feast! I was lucky enough to be guided by Jorge on an invigorating trek within the Talamanca Mountain Range to visit the Cabecar Indian community to learn about the people’s traditional way of life. The route zig-zagged steeply up through rampant rainforest and the tropical wonder of giant mahogany trees with buttress roots and vines tangling through moss-draped branches with Jurassic ferns on trunks towering towards the canopy and custard coloured toadstools lining the narrow path like runway lights. Further on an army of leaf-cutting ants marched across an insect motorway

hauling vast cargo, as all around the canopy was alive with the buzzing, screeching and hooting of invisible creatures. After a couple of hours we emerged from the sheltered canopy through a giant bamboo arch and out onto a cleared sweep of plateau to reveal a scattering of thatched dwellings dotted around the hillside. The village has no electricity and people lead a selfsufficient existence much as they have done for many generations. The rainforest is their shelter, food and medicine. Pacuare Lodge is a magical ‘destination’ with a series of delightful surprises at every turn and I could quite happily have spent my entire two weeks here. I write this article from the beauty and comfort of my veranda at Lapas Rios Eco-Lodge and Reserve. The sun is sinking low in the vast vista before me, casting its golden light far across the tree canopy immediately below. In its wake

the iridescent green illuminated by the sunlight succumbs to the olive tones of dusk in a long line of divide between night and day. Beyond the Pacific ripples reflect the sun beaming through a flurry of low cloud with the steely blue mountains of Punta Burica in the distance. A Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan has traversed the width of my balcony a dozen times in a bid to search out the riper fruit of the almond trees swaying either side of my view. Howler Monkeys are roaring from the canopy below and a White Ibis glides gracefully from view as parakeets chatter noisily in their search for the night’s roost. Pairs of Scarlet Macaws are soaring below as part of their nightly ritual. A Slender Anole Lizard has marched along the balcony railing in front of me and billowed out his throat pouch in a bid to reclaim his territory - I move my foot from the railing and he boldly marches on his way! It is sadly time to depart my ethereal state, The Garden of Eden tropical

paradise and its natural treasures. Our Nature Air flight completed a perfect journey as we zipped across Golfo Dulce between towering volcanoes before landing at San Jose International airport in order to check in for our departure flight which was somewhat delayed due to Costa Rica’s 1-0 victory over Italy in the football World Cup. Who would have imagined that the smiles of the Costa Ricans – always prevalent – could become even wider – a perfect end to a magical journey. Pura Vida. If you would like to adventure in Costa Rica, itineraries can be tailor-made for you by World Odyssey – for more information on anything to do with Central America or anywhere on the planet, please visit www.world-odyssey.com or call one of our travel specialists for advice on: 01905 731373.

ASTAWAY This September, Beards Jewellers are to stage the world’s most extravagant treasure hunt, the Beards Diamond Rush. 10 real diamonds each worth £1,000, are being hidden at top-secret locations around Cheltenham. On 13 September you could be in with a chance of finding one of these precious prizes. To coincide with this hot hunt, our Castaway Collection columnist Ellie Mainwaring interviewed Beards’ Bespoke Jewellery Designer Sophie Cudworth. Here we explore the contents of her suitcase, should she be stranded on a desert island. Where in the world will you choose to be a castaway and why?

Bhutan. It’s sandwiched between China and India and is a tiny Buddhist state with it’s own identity from it’s neighbouring countries. Prosperity is measured by the happiness levels of its citizens rather than the GDP. It really would be extremely remote as it has very little contact with the outside world. I like the idea of serenity and going somewhere that’s completely secluded. Being a Jewellery Designer, we have to ask, what would you take from your personal jewellery collection?

For me it would be a Turkish gold bangle that my Grandma left to me. I’m not quite sure how I ended up with it as we’re a big family and there wasn’t a lot to go around. It was in a box for ages before I started wearing it and, as it’s quite dainty, it’s now pretty battered but I still love it. Although it’s not worth an enormous amount, it has enormous sentimental value to me. From the many incredible pieces you have designed, which stands out from the crowd?

With the nature of my job, I get to know my clients and their stories intimately. People remember through jewellery, it stands the test of time and lasts longer than a memory. They’re a legacy; it’s not about how much it’s worth in value,

Sophie

but how much it means to you. I would choose an intricate charm necklace I recently created for a client in memory of her husband and their shared love of reading. Hearing her story throughout the consultation process truly touched me. When the final piece was presented to her it brought her to tears and we still keep in touch today. You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be?

Fat Freddy’s Drop. They’re a New Zealand band and their style is a real mash of reggae, soul, jazz, techno, and rhythm and blues. It’s the only band that regardless of my mood, I know I will enjoy. It’s a really uplifting sound and being on a desert island, I think I’d appreciate this.

Although I’m horrendously allergic to almost all pets, my parents have a Westie who I adore. She came to us as a handme-down from my Nan. She’s such a Princess, but despite her diva attitude, she spends most of her time covered in bits of garden from foraging in the undergrowth. What animal or pet would you take?

Name one possession you would take with you and one to leave behind for a loved one? Take: A sketchbook and pencil. I know

it’s a really predictable answer with the job I do, but it would be more for writing than drawing. If I’m on my own for an extended period of time, I like to write things down to read back in months to come. Leave Behind: My unique diary, which has been going since 1997. Unlike a more conventional diary, which you write in daily, I only do one entry when I find the diary, so it jumps years from entry to entry. The first entry talks about ‘The No Boys Club’ and is written in felt tip pen! It’s wonderfully nostalgic to see the subject matter change, from the first early entries to where I am today. Purchase your Diamond Rush treasure map from Beards, Maggie’s, Whole Foods and Waitrose from 1 September. To find out more visit www.beards.co.uk/diamondrush and follow Beards Jewellers on Twitter and Facebook. Get involved using the hashtag: #DiamondRush.

Grace&Glamour

Time for TEXTURE From the longest of evenings to a subtle chill in the air, it may seem that the transition from summer to autumn is a negative one – but only to those not in the know. It’s time to throw out your thoughts and refresh your vision; transitional style is here and a statement shall be made… WORDS BY GRACE PARRY ashion in summer may be light, breezy and carefree, but surely there’s only so much pastel a girl can take – or is that just me? When the nights ever so slowly start to draw in, there’s only one thing left to think of – autumn winter style. Before long, layers will be upon layers, wool will be everywhere are out ankles shall be out of site – but until then, lets enjoy that period we call transition. After all, one can’t just jump from summer prints, swimwear and sliders to faux fur, scarves and texture – as much as some of us (yes I mean me) would like to. Our seasons may be rocky, but surely we’re a while away from winter coats! Trends can often seem to remain the same, year upon year, but only to the untrained eye. Yes there may be a lot of darker, much warmer colours, a whole lot of leather and velvet scattered with the odd sock, felt hat or piece of knitwear, the same as any other year, but that’s where the similarities end. Let me talk you through five of the top trends to come for autumn winter this year; trends that are not only covetable, but wearable and available to start styling now! Folk is a trend that has been edging it’s way in over recent seasons and it seems to have finally made it’s mark. Forget stuffy and old fashioned, folk is full of quirky prints, pretty colours and so on trend – perfect for the fashionista side of you; just like this Hobbs NW3 by Hobbs number.

F

If the warmer months are for ease, then the colder ones are all about glamour. Decadence will be called for for both day and night this season. Oasis have got it oh so right with their winter floral print two piece – so much so, it’s just walked it’s way right into my wardrobe! Tailoring isn’t for Oasis everyone, but it definitely can be. Warehouse Androgyny is hard to style, but with a waistcoat like this one by Karen Millen, frills and ruffles can be added for a feminine softness or extra edge can be added with even cleaner lines and a chunky heel. Karen Millen Where Reiss would we be in winter without wool? Cold, perhaps. Texture is what makes a well done item fresh, especially when it comes to knitwear, so keep your eye out for chunky, fluffy or furry versions just like Reiss have done. And for the grande finale, romance of course. Lace and autumn winter couldn’t be

more made for each other if they tried. Forget the overdone and under appreciated lace dress and go in for the separates. A top like the Warehouse crop (which also comes in black, might I add) can add a little romantic edge for work and weekends.

Whichever are the ones for you, make sure you wear them with style and show a new side to the most glamorous of seasons.

SmartSkin Face masks are not just for girlie nights in but form a very important part of our beauty routines says, make-up artist, Lucy Pearce... Face masks have been around for years. Your first experience of them may have been at a girlie sleepover during your teens, or perhaps you followed your mothers example and even added the cucumber slices across your eyes... Either way, their importance in our beauty regime is key, as they can often be the solution to a variety of skin concerns. Used weekly, face masks can lead you to getting younger, brighter and firmer looking skin regardless of your skin type. If you think that face masks are not for you, have a look at my suggestions and see for yourself. You will be amazed at the results. If you have combination skin, you can always use more than one of these masks at a time, just apply the type of mask needed to the correct area of your face. If you have sensitive skin, please patch test before using any of these products.

Dehydrated skin

If your skin is prone to being dull and dehydrated, masks can really help to replenish the moisture it needs. La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque (£16.00) contains a great natural anti-oxidant, La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water and hyaluronic acid fragments to help the skin retain as much water as possible. This means that the skin will feel rehydrated and plumped up.

Blemished skin

Everyone gets blemishes from time to time and for many different reasons but usin ga mask can be a great way to reduce this happening. Medik8 Clay Mask (£27.00) is great at reducing the appearance of pore size and leaves the skin fresh and glowing. It contains natural clay that helps absorb excess oil and this in turn helps to prevent further break outs. The plant extracts contained within this mask also have great healing properties.

Mature Skin Mask

When you get a little more mature, your skin needs even more attention than before to keep it looking its best. Der malogica Multivitamin Power recovery Masque (£33.50) is great if your skin is feeling old, worn out and dull. Containing vitamins A, C and E, this mask has fabulous repairing qualities and the botanicals make it very soothing and gentle to the skin. Many find this mas k helps to plump up the skin and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and even scaring.

Sensitive/Reactive Skin Mask

Most people with sensitive skin are scared to try any new products and I agree that you should always patch test before using anything new. However, Masks can really help to reduce future sensitivity. Dr. Andrew Weil For Origins Mega-Mushroom Skin Relief Face Mask is a beautifully gentle, redness reducing mask. It contains many natural, soothing ingredients including Reishi mushrooms, Ginger and turmeric. The marine algae and plant extracts within the mask help to add brightness to the skin and also creates a protective barrier to reduce the chance of future flare ups.

C2S BUSINESS UPDATE NO SUMMER SLOW DOWN FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Words by Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success PHOTO: JAMES TANDY

THE SUMMER hasn’t been quiet for local businesses it seems. Lots going on around the county and the challenge to engage more companies in signing up to the Corporate Covenant continues. Recently ex Special Forces soldier Nigel Thomas (pictured right) started an epic journey not only in miles but also to raise £1m. Nigel started his gruelling 1,027 miles assent up the country from Land’s End to John o’ Groats stopping off at a selection of rugby Clubs on the way in August. He is looking to raise £1m for 3 military charities including Hire a Hero who C2S have been working with but also charities Team Army & Walk on Wales. There are lots of charity bike rides but Nigel is doing something slightly more arduous! He is riding a 1940’s Butchers Bike with his tent and back pack with him! Must be his Special Forces background! When Nigel arrived at Kingsholm with some of his supporters riding in with him he was greeted with some local companies who took the opportunity to sign their corporate covenants. Signing with Nigel included: Paul Baldwin on behalf of Brunsdon; Paul Bates on behalf of Cotswold Style and Ben Hannaby on behalf of C&P Food Services. Nigel was overwhelmed with the support and very grateful to the local business community.

THE LAST Executive Forum was held at Tayabali Tomlin where senior managers and directors of local businesses gathered together to discuss business strategy using the business canvass tool , the session was facilitated by Aynsley Damery and Sophia Maynell of Tayabali Tomlin. Members also worked in small groups to look at how to apply the tool to their respective businesses. ‘It was really interesting to listen to a member of the group talk about their business and help them to look at their business in a new way using this tool’ said Forum member Dale Thomas, ILEC IMEC. NO FAIRY TALE FOR MIGRANT WORKER It is often very satisfying to write this column. I am able to cast a critical eye on judge’s attempts to grapple with difficult issues and criticise them when they fail to keep up with a modern word that I myself am often left behind by as I ask my 9 year old daughter to record a TV programme for me. However, occasionally such a difficult issue arises that I am reminded about decency and the fact that the foundations of decency are sometimes at stake in saga’s that unfold in the courts all too often

I

n English employment law, it has long been established that if an employment relationship is illegal, then the employee cannot then sue the employer (having benefited from the arrangement). So, for example where someone has entered into a contract of employment to transport stolen goods, it is likely a tribunal would not entertain them if they later claimed unfair dismissal. The same applies to tax dodgers in certain circumstances. In a case last month, a young lady from Nigeria escaped her own country and managed to make it into the UK illegally. I will not pontificate on her reasons for leaving, or condone her actions in entering this country illegally, but she must have had her reasons. She was offered employment as a nanny in a wealthy household where she was required to live. She must have considered herself very lucky to

Darren Sherborne

have got work and accommodation in one go. However, in this very sad story, this was not a fairy tale ending. She was, according to the court, the victim of abuse in the household and after a period within the house she was dismissed and evicted onto the street. The claim found its way to the tribunal and then up to appeal. In short, the head of the house argued that the employment was illegal and therefore the young lady was not

entitled to claim discrimination. I imagine that this case will polarise opinion. On the one hand you have a girl who is vulnerable, comes to this country for a better life and falls victim to abuse by an employer to whom she owes everything (it’s the stuff of a Dickens novel). On the other, you have an illegal immigrant with no business being in the country to start with, using our legal system to sue someone who was good enough to give her a job when she really should not have been here and was employed illegally. The judgment in this case, which has been almost totally unreported, is significant for us as a society not because of one woman’s loss or gain, but because following the established approach to illegality or not sets out what we, as a society, will condone as acceptable behaviour toward the disadvantaged in our society, however they got here. If we take the view that they should have no rights in relation to discrimination, where do we draw the line on what is acceptable abuse? If we allow the woman to claim, do we invite anyone from overseas to enter illegally and then simply claim all the rights of an established citizen? The court in this case rules that the employer in this case could not get away with it. The court separated the abuse from the illegality and said that the two issues were separate. The employer could not rely on his own illegal activity in employing the girl to get away with abuse. Presumably however the girl will need to spend her award for discrimination back in Nigeria. Tayabali Tomlin challenge the stereotypical view of accountants, their office space, of course, follows suit...

THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE Tayabali Tomlin is unlike any other firm of accountants. Being different, challenging the status quo, inspiring great business and changing lives are all prominent features of the firm’s strategy and brand. All of which makes for a strong and lasting impression on visitors to their new offices in Imperial Square, Cheltenham. The firm’s modern brand image, innovative mission and unique approach are clearly reflected in the bold brand colours on the walls, contemporary wooden flooring and stylish fixtures. Tayabali Tomlin’s reception area is light, bright and stylish with the shiny

120 SEPTEMBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

wing of a DC3 airliner experiencing a second life as the reception desk. Certainly very different from the stereotypical staid view many have of an accountant’s office. The entrance hall has a quirky stencil of a bicycle painted on the wall, and a vine motif stencil leads you up the stairs to the boardroom or further down the corridor to ‘The Vine’, an entrepreneurial hub designed for clients to meet, eat, drink and network. This three roomed networking space with a contemporary bistro menu and outside space is a first for Cheltenham and certainly catches the imagination.

The board room upstairs has a blue theme, softened by the warm Cotswold stone of the Town Hall, the view of which fills all four floor-to-ceiling length windows. The original regency features have been discreetly celebrated and work harmoniously with the understated contemporary touches, which can be seen everywhere.

Business

Working with innovative interior designers, Marlin Office Interiors, Partner Aynsley Damery, planned the remarkable refurbishment of the regency building over the last 12 months. The firm, with an office in Moreton-in-Marsh and London, had recognised that Cheltenham is becoming a hotbed for entrepreneurial businesses with new creative and innovative companies being formed in or moving to the town. It was important to have an office that was right in the thick of it, and the property on Imperial Square

became available at just the right time. There is great synergy between the building design and the Tayabali Tomlin brand image. The firm differentiate themselves from the rest of the market by building the value of the entrepreneurial companies they work with, employing entrepreneurial ethics as a firm, and always looking to innovate their offering, ensuring optimum success for their clients. All of this is backed up with an exceptional service offering, a talented and ambitious workforce and strong core values within the team. Like the regency quality of the building on Imperial Square, the Tayabali Tomlin offering has been diligently planned, designed and structured to result in the best there is. On top of this, clients of the firm have grown to expect a variety of added value services such as

strategic planning days, financial modelling, entrepreneurial education and social media training. This is echoed in the contemporary design of the office’s interior, not to mention the entrepreneurial business hub in the office’s basement. It’s fair to say that with both Tayabali Tomlin, the accountants, and their Imperial Square offices, added value and elegant extras are the order of the day.

Mathew Waddington answers your family questions Q

I am in the process of splitting up with my wife, and have been told that I will have to go to Court where the divorce would all be very expensive and contested. We are trying to get on well for the sake of our children. Does it always have to go to Court?

A

In two words – certainly not. I am divorced myself, and get on very well with my ex wife, and our divorce was settled without either of us setting a foot inside a Courtroom. The vast majority of cases do not go to a Final Hearing, and depending on how reasonable the parties are and how well they get on, I usually expect the parties to reach a compromise which can be put in the place of a Court Order, albeit you do not have to actually go to Court to get the Order, it is sent into the Judge as paperwork. Parties can agree themselves without the need for legal advice, albeit of course I would always say that they are at a disadvantage as they do not know what they are entitled to, and that they should always seek some initial legal advice before attempting to come to an agreement. If you are your wife are not able to come to an agreement then you could always attempt Mediation. This tends generally to be cheaper than taking it fully through solicitors and is certainly cheaper than taking it all the way through to a Final Hearing.

If the most important thing for you is to be able to have a good relationship for the sake of your children, then I also offer Collaborative Law, which can be known as 'The Friendly Divorce'. I recognise that it is a very emotional and difficult time, having been through it myself. However, Collaborative Law is a process by which both parties will have a series of meetings with their Collaborative Lawyers in an attempt to come to an agreement. The whole process is based on there being open and frank discussions, with the values of the parties being at the centre of the entire process. The usual value is that parties wish to be able to get along very well for the sake of their children. If Mediation or Collaborative Law are not for you, then there is a process by which we are able to exchange some financial information and negotiate and come to agreement before going to Court. It is only a minority of cases that will go to Court, and certainly less than 5% of cases will end up at a Final Hearing stage. THE MAN BEHIND THE FOOD F

ood has always had an incredibly important role in my life. My family has a rich background in the hospitality industry so it was no surprise to them when I showed an interest in cooking. I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t an interest of mine. One of my earliest memories is of sitting watching my Grandmother cooking up a storm on Sundays and being desperate to help – or more likely lick the spoon! I’ve worked mostly in and around the Cotswolds with brief forays up to London for the past 12 years and I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with

some of the best Chefs in the world, including Marcus Wareing. The Cotswolds is my home though so I was thrilled to join the team at Cirencester’s first luxury hotel, the Kings Head. The vision of the team behind this hotel is immense. The interiors coupled with the overall concept will result in a hotel like no other in the Cotswolds and I’m really proud to be a part of it. My aim is to put the Kings Head on the culinary map and to build an excellent reputation within the town and furthermore, the Cotswolds itself. I first started cooking at the age of

We find out all about the Head Chef of the Kings Head Hotel, Cirencester, Wayne Sullivan 12 in Food Technology at school and I loved it.That led me to the obvious option of Catering College on leaving school and as soon as I started I knew that I’d found my niche. I’m a firm believer in having to start at the bottom and work your way up. If you have worked your way around a professional kitchen, nothing will faze you. My first job in a kitchen was washing up in a pub that belonged to my parent’s friends. I was so short that I couldn’t reach the bottom of the sink and had to stand on

“ONE OF MY EARLIEST MEMORIES IS OF SITTING WATCHING MY GRANDMOTHER’S COOKING UP A STORM ON SUNDAYS AND BEING DESPERATE TO HELP – OR MORE LIKELY LICK THE SPOON!” upturned bottle crates. The Chefs used to think it hilarious to dunk me in every now and then. I’ve certainly come a long way and I’m really looking forward to breathing life into the restaurant at the Kings Head. The restaurant will be at the heart of the hotel, rather like this hotel used to be at the heart of Cirencester. We’re aiming to create an offering that will alter people’s perceptions of what hotel restaurant food is like. The restaurant will be relaxed and accessible but that premise won’t mean that we are relaxed about flavours or appearance, our dishes will still wow.

Meet the Chef

Roasted Fillet & Slow Cooked Belly of Gloucester Old Spot, Black Pudding Bon Bons & Bourbon Jus INGREDIENTS: Pork 400g Trimmed Pork Fillet 600g Pork Belly – Bones Removed & Skin Scored 2 Granny Smiths Apples, sliced – No Need to Peel or Core Black Pudding Bon Bons 200g Black Pudding 1 Beaten Egg 100g Plain Flour 100g Breadcrumbs Boubon Jus 500ml Chicken Stock 200ml Apple Juice 50ml Boubon PREPARATION: • Preheat the oven to 120°C. • Line a 2” deep roasting tray with parchment paper and layer the sliced apples inside. • Place the pork belly on top of this and

cover with another sheet of parchment and kitchen foil, taking care to ensure all the edges are completed slealed. • Place the tray in the middle of a pre heated oven (120°C) and leave to cook for roughly 6 hours (possibly more for exceptionally thick pieces of belly). • Prepare and cook the pork belly at least 24 hours in advance so it has time to cook and set in the fridge. • When this is cooked, remove carefully from the tray and place on a second parchment lined tray and wrap tightly in cling flim. Allow to cool in fridge for 18 hours. Set aside the apples for the sauce. When set, carefully portion the belly into 4 even sized squares. • For the sauce, take the apples from cooking the pork and place in a saucepan and gently warm. Turn the heat up and pour the Bourbon in, taking care to burn off the alcohol. • When the flame has gone out, pour in the apple juice and bring to the boil for about 5 minutes to reduce by half. Then pour in the stock and boil once again, reduce to a simmer and reduce by

half again, until the jus is the right consistency to coat the back of a spoon. • The Black Pudding Bon Bons are very easy. Remove the outer casing and break down the black pudding with your hands or the back of a fork. When broken, take a teaspoon of black pudding and roil into a ball using the palms of your hands. • When complete, roll them in flour, egg and then breadcrumbs and gently fry at approximately 150°C until golden brown. Alternatively, pop them in the oven on a greased tray, they won’t be as golden or crispy but still just as delicious. • To cook the pork fillet, season lightly and place in a medium heat frying pan, turning to caramelise each side evenly, ensuring not to burn. When golden coloured all over, remove from the pan and place on a roasting tray with the pork belly and place in the oven on a moderate heat 180°C for 10 minutes. TEE TIME This month, Shane Duff, reveals what will leave him wanting to retreat to the confines of his lounge this month...

“I HAVE CLOSED THAT WHOLE WEEKEND OFF IN MY DIARY AND I WILL GLADLY BECOME A HERMIT FOR THREE DAYS” SOCCER

SCHOOL

www.shaneduffsoccer.co.uk Twitter: @shaneduffsoccer Facebook.com/shaneduffsoccer

I always look forward to September. For me, it signifies the beginning of The Ryder Cup. If you haven’t heard of this before, let me tell you more. The best golfers from the United States and Europe all join together to compete in the pressure cooker that is, The Ryder Cup. There are four majors in the golfing calendar and if you speak to the players, this is definitely the fifth. Listen to their words, watching their body language and their shots will tell you that this event means as much to them as any other event they play in. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? You may wonder what makes The Ryder Cup so important, well I think it is because it is rooted in the players misspent youths. When other schoolboy athletes, the so-called ‘real athletes’, were playing rugby, football cricket amongst others, the golfers were on the range, earbuds in their canals, doing the lonely, methodical boring groove that leads to golfing excellence. A certain excellence that will stand them in good stead when the worlds eyes are watching; the heart is pounding and the palms are sweating. The margins for error in golf are miniscule and what these players can do

is something else. Pressure is an unmeasurable component of sport but will impact on all players that weekend. Anyone who has played golf before will be familiar with the feeling that comes alongside standing on the first tee in front of prying eyes. All you want to do is avoid looking stupid, “Anything remotely straight will do”, you utter to yourself. You end up gripping the club like you are on a white knuckle ride at Alton Towers in a quest to steer the little white ball off in the direction you want. It is exhiliarating. I have written that whole weekend off in my diary and I will gladly become a hermit for three days. I will stock the cupboards with food from Europe and the States, and might even go as far as getting some rascal shorts that replicate the USA flag. Or, perhaps not... Get yourself tuned in for three days on the 26-28th September. Twitter: @duffo16

“I always wanted to be a pilot!” We meet Gloucester Rugby player, Nick Wood, ahead of the new season kicking off this September

1) How do you feel on this forthcoming season, are you feeling optimistic? I’m feeling very optimistic. I feel we’ve assembled an incredibly strong group of players and coaches with a fantastic balance across the squad. Hopefully we can build from the bottom up as a group and take the club forward, both on and off the pitch.

2) What have you made of David Humphreys and his team since he has taken over? I’ve been very impressed with all of the coaching staff and even though they’ve only been here a short while, they’ve managed to get a great response from the players with their passion for the game and their coaching styles. 3) Marlon Devonish Olympic sprinter on the coaching staff has he made you quicker? It’s been a great opportunity to work with Marlon. In terms of pure speed, that is more the focus for the backs. With the forwards, Marlon’s focus has been to improve running mechanics, to allow us to generate more power into contact and to be more explosive off the mark.

4) How have the new signings fitted in? Who has impressed you the most? The new signings have really taken the training intensity up another level,

whether through their own abilities or because other players around them are inspired to work harder and push themselves. The best bit is all the lads have fitted in seamlessly with their banter and become part of the group right from the start. Richard Hibbard is quite a character, always wheeling and dealing with the latest products. Don’t you dare touch his golden locks, though!

“BATH AND LEICESTER AT HOME ARE THE REAL HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE SEASON, SUCH INTENSITY FROM THE PLAYER AND THE CROWD.“ 5) What Premiership game do you look for on the fixture list and gets you most excited? Bath and Leicester at home are the real highlights for the season, such intensity from the player and the crowd. In the tight, physical games you can really cut the atmosphere with a knife. Outside of the Premiership, there aren’t many true away games left, most places are done on a day’s round trip, so the occasional away fixture in Europe is always enjoyable, both for the rugby and it’s one of the few remaining occasions when we get to have a few beers with the travelling fans.

6) Any ambitions for this season? Quite simply to get back to the Gloucester of old, in terms of the way we play our rugby. It is what the club’s heritage demands. This quote sums it up for me: “The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the

forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer.” – Doug Ibbotson

7) If you were not a professional Rugby player, what would you be? I studied languages at school and university, so I’m not sure what path that would have led me down – some form of travel most likely – something that my job for the last 12 years has afforded me in abundance. Growing up, I always wanted to be a pilot and I’m fortunate to be good mates with a very kind man who has taken me flying in all sorts of aircraft around the country. This Month with Kate Justice

Say no to Waste The first week of September is Zero Waste Week. It's a National endeavour with an international following, but it all began here in Gloucestershire Fundamentally it’s about recycling – the idea is to not throw anything away into landfill but to compost, recycle or reuse all your waste. Of course, this leads to an inevitable focus on how we shop. Packaging - is it or is it not a ludicrously overdone practice? Sometimes if I unpackage my weekly shop before putting everything away, the wrapping fills up a bin liner. Reducing that waste to Zero means taking your reusable container to the shops and getting the butcher to fill it up instead of buying the pre-packed portions. Extra effort and planning are required, but imagine if we all did it? Mrs Green is behind the concept of not putting anything into landfill. Living on the outskirts of the Forest of Dean, Mrs Green and her family managed a Zero Waste YEAR. In general they put their wheelie bin out.... not fortnightly... but annually. If I forget to put the bins out once, the front of the house starts to look like my own personal landfill site after a just a few days. I could reduce my waste – possibly even to nothing for one week (remember, empty wine bottles count as recycling) – but this would involve me having toast for every meal or eating out. All week. I clearly need some ‘better practice’ advice. Back to Mrs Green (real name Rachelle Strauss)... The ‘Green’ family have a website stuffed with tips on waste reduction at home and work. From getting rid of junk mail, to starting a compost heap, there’s probably something on there that even the most avid environmentalists don’t know about yet. Compost is an easy one for me... with two dogs and several cats, leftover food is pretty much limited to egg shells and tea bags. Sadly I kept leaving the food composting bin behind when dragging the wheelies up the drive, until it became a brimfull festering mess of goo. Even more sadly, this was then accidentally knocked flying, launching the putrid liquid full pelt, horizontally across the driveway when the terrier saw 146 SEPTEMBER 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

He MUST take the most direct route possible if he is ever to stand a chance of actually catching and eating any of the elusive cats. Anyway, the theme for this year’s National Zero Waste Week is ‘One More Thing’. Make it manageable. Whatever your current level of recycling, just add a simple extra. My aim is to ditch the supermarket carrier bags once and for all. All this will involve for me, is remembering to put my Bag For Life back in the car when I’ve unloaded it. IfI bought a new one every time I went shopping and forgot it I’d have roughly 800 by now. Our children all seem to be amazing environmentalists. There’s still plenty of talk about landfill versus incineration –

especially here in Gloucestershire – and a few people claim that some of our recycling efforts may be a waste of time, but I’m fed up of getting told off by the kids for chucking empty tins or potato peelings in the ‘normal’ bin. They’ve realised they’re going to inherit this planet and while I’m busy raising them, they’re busy trying to retrain me, to make sure there’s something left.
