A Letter From The Editor.
Welcome to our January issue. How is the new year treating you so far? I must confess I quite like January. It’s an opportunity for us all to feel like we can hit the reset button. However, a reset for me isn’t about setting goals or resolutions that add to the pressure of everyday life; it’s more about giving myself a clean slate to start anew. Permission to put things behind you and relegate difficult matters to the past as much as you can. I like that feeling. Additionally, I think resolutions (if you want to make them) should be made in December. This means if you want to learn a new language, take-up running or read more books, family and friends can perhaps make that part of the Christmas gift experience, and come January, you can hit the ground running.
Part of a new year reset should also be about being kind to yourself. Every year, I have to remind myself I’m not a robot. For me, it’s important to seek out things that induce a deep sense of comfort. It’s not about overindulging, but it’s definitely about allowing ourselves to enjoy good things. Finding somewhere beautiful to eat out is part of this for me and many of us. I visited the Kings Arms in Mickleton in December, and I was reminded how important and comforting pubs can be for us and our communities. It’s so much more than ‘just having a drink’. Find out more about my visit and all the Kings Arms has to offer on P6, in ‘More Than Just a Cotswold Pub’.
My other go-to for deep comfort and relaxation is a spa day (or weekend if I’m lucky), find my recommendations on P16 in ‘Lift Your Spirits -Spa Days in the Cotswolds.’ Turn to Page 44 for my nourishing and tasty recipe for the ultimate blueberry smoothie. Find our bird of the month on p28 and P52 for ‘Bird Feeders and Disease Prevention’ to find out how we can all stop the spread of diseases amongst our beautiful birds.
Here’s to the rest of the year. If you have a story by all means give me a shout – I’d love to hear from you.

Kings Arms
Mickleton
More than Just a Cotswold Pub
You’ll find the Kings Arms pub in the centre of the north Cotswolds, just a short drive from Stratford-Upon-Avon, in the pretty village of Mickleton. The Cotswold stone pub sits proudly on Mickleton High Street and has been an inn since 1592 when the first landlord, according to records, was a Mr Kempson.
Mike Tayara has been the landlord since 2002 and, under him, the Kings Arms has thrived and remained an important part of Mickleton’s life. On a grey afternoon in mid-December, I headed to the pub to chat with the manager Michael Brew about the importance of pubs in a village like Mickleton.
I’ve visited the Kings Arms many times, but as I sipped a green tea and waited for Michael, I took in my surroundings. It’s an old building with the usual low ceilings, wooden beams and tantalising nooks. But it’s the objects within the pub that really caught my eye. Beautiful and intriguing curiosities and antiques are carefully curated throughout, giving the space a lush sense of harmony and interest. The effect appears effortless. However, from experience, I know it’s anything but. It’s the kind of attention to detail that quietly elevates an interior, and I love it. It’s an interior that maintains the essence and charm of an old country pub whilst also giving a more modern feel of deep comfort.
I chatted easily with Michael. We talked pubs, their significance and decline across the UK and their importance to rural areas. With at least one pub a day closing across the UK, the threat is real. When pubs in rural areas are frequently central to village life, the loss to a village can be devastating. Like many rural industries, pubs are having to diversify. Michael explained to me that whilst Covid was a colossal challenge for the hospitality industry, it consequently motivated the team at the Kings Arms to create an outstanding and desirable outside space.
He’s not wrong. Their pub garden is not quite like anywhere else I’ve been. Varyingsized, ample and sumptuous seating areas are tucked away here and there all over the outside space. It has a secret garden quality. There’s an outside bar, enough grass for kids to burn off steam and delightful trees and foliage dotted about. It’s easy to wile away the hours in an area like this. This contrasted with the cosy interior and the Kings Arms has created something clever that’s suitable for all seasons.
Michael explained that, to survive, they had to be creative, and the entire team has worked to establish a pub that serves as a destination and experience. He went on to say that while Mickleton is charming, it may be less of a holiday hotspot than some Cotswold villages, meaning they had to put in a bit of extra effort to attract visitors from far and wide. And it’s working; that very day, Michael had served a couple who had travelled 90 miles for lunch because it’s their favourite pub. Whenever I’ve been there, the pub is always pleasantly buzzing with customers. Mike Tayara, the landlord, can often be seen in the pub, making his way around the patrons, chatting and getting to know them.
The Kings Arms also collaborates closely with another pub in the village, The Butchers Arms, complementing and supporting one another. I admire this approach; rather than seeing your neighbour as competition, you view them as an ally – what could be more communityminded?
But, of course, none of this would matter or work if the King Arms fell at one of the most important hurdles: food. Michael described how their goal was to produce meals of a high standard that are also value for money. They also place sustainability at the heart
of what they do. They endeavour to use locally sourced meat whenever possible, and everything comes from the butcher, David Moore, that sits just across the road in Mickleton. Wine comes from the wine merchants in Mickleton, and the vegetables from down the road at Drinkwater Fruit and Vegetables. It’s a community affair, and the produce spends less time travelling. And ultimately, it’s the food that’s drawn me back to the Kings Arms again and again. With good quality ingredients, they effortlessly straddle the line between hearty and refined food. Michael tells me they have a cracking team; it doesn’t surprise me. As I finish my tea, we wind up putting the world to rights. Michael shares a joke with a local who walks past on the way to the loo, ‘He’s got a great story’ he says after he’s passed, ‘that’s why I love this job, it’s the stories and the people. In the end, it’s all about the people.’ On the drive home, I think about the interview, and it occurs to me, what more do you want from a good pub – fine food and drink and someone who wants to hear your story.

BIRD OF THE MONTH
The Greenfinch
I am particularly fond of Greenfinches. I love their flash of colour, sociable nature, beautiful faces, and robust beaks. Plus their raspy, characterful birdsong that begins in March and, for me, signifies the start of spring.
WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE
They have a stout, chunky bill for crushing seeds. Males have a grey-green head and greenish body, while the females are a duller brown across both their upper and lower parts. The tails and large primary wing feathers of males and females are edged in yellow, giving a distinctive bright streak to their plumage. They weigh around 28g. The greenfinch is larger than a robin but smaller than a blackbird.
HOW DO THEY BREED?
The breeding season begins in March when the Greenfinch male shows off their yellow feathers and performs loud display flights in a bid to attract a female. They then build small cup-sized nests within dense vegetation from twigs, moss and grass. Sometimes alone or within a small colony. Generally, two broods will be produced over the summer. There will be about six eggs per brood, which will hatch about 14 days later and then fledge just two short weeks after that.
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
They can be found all throughout the UK, in both rural and urban environments. You can often see them in parks and domestic gardens but also farms and woodland. During the winter, as they search for food, Greenfinches will form flocks with other finches such as the Siskin or Goldfinch, making for a beautiful, sociable sight.
CONSERVATION
Greenfinches have been in decline since 2006 when it was noted that Trichomonas gallinae - a disease caused by a parasitesignificantly affected them. The disease affects several British birds, but the Greenfinch population is almost 70% lower than it was back in 1967. Find out how you can help prevent the spread of disease on P52 of the magazine.

The Ultimate Blueberry Smoothie Recipe
On one of my many health kicks, I sought out some smoothie recipes for my blender; quite frankly, they were vile. The result was often a glass of brown sludge that was tortuous to drink. Or rather, gulp slowly because they were so thick and fibrous. Who are these masochists who down this gloop every day I wondered?
It wasn’t long before I had created my own recipe filled with ingredients I would gladly stick with. I’m delighted to share it with you and to spare you the tortuous brown sludge and the self-defeating feeling of failure because you just can’t bear it. Let’s normalise the creation of healthy habits that the weak/ sane (delete according to your perspective) find tasty and can maintain. Enjoy my Ultimate Blueberry Smoothie recipe, and here’s to making health kicks taste nice.

Bird Feeders and Disease Prevention
HOW WE CAN ALL HELP SAVE OUR BRITISH BIRDS
A bird feeder in your garden is one of the great joys of life. However, bird feeders, bird baths and bird tables can easily assist in the transmission of diseases that are killing large swathes of our bird population. Birds are affected by viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases, and the transmissible diseases are known to spread when birds congregate in large numbers. This means that whilst gardens are an increasingly important habitat for birds, congregation at bird feeders creates the perfect environment for disease to spread. But what can we do?
• Keep feeders free from bird’s feet and poo. If a bird can stand and poop in a feeder and walk on their food, it can spread disease. They should only be able to access the food with their beaks.
• Buy specialist safe feeders that ensure this, we like feeders from the company ‘Finches Friend’ (https://www.finchesfriend. com/shop)
• Ditch bird tables as they are prime places for disease to spread.
• Offer a variety of foods from accredited sources.
• Feed in moderation so that feeders are emptied roughly every 1-2 days.
• Regularly rotate your feed sites and use the opportunity to thoroughly clean each area, allowing no food or droppings to fester and accumulate on the floor around the feeder. Be vigilant.
• Regularly clean your feeders. Buy a feeder that can easily be taken apart and each part scrubbed in a bucket with very hot soapy water and rinsed thoroughly. Always make sure you wear gloves and use them only to clean the bird feeder. After washing treat the feeder with a non-toxic disinfectant solution, we like Ark-Klens.
