The days have become shorter with a chill in the air; the snowy season is upon us. In Cottage Country, we have a lot to be thankful for as 2019 comes to a close. We are blessed to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful vistas in Canada – rich with wildlife and lake-life alike. Here at the magazine, we have a great team who work hard to support the best clients, and we look forward to a new year filled with innovative beginnings and strong business relationships, both old and new. We thank YOU, our readers, for a great year, and we look forward to coming full circle back to our roots in 2020 as a community publication you can rely on for feel good-news, information and interesting reads. In an age of online shopping and big box stores, most everything we need is easily available with a few keystrokes. Sadly, most of what you get is fast, disposable and cheap. Shopping locally has never been more important.
① Economy Local businesses are the backbone of our economy. Studies show that for every $100 spent locally, $45 will stay in that community, and $9 within province. When you spend that same $100 at international corporations only $14 stays in the community - mostly in way of payroll; the rest going to the corporation and out of country. ② Creating Jobs Shopping locally creates a strong job market, keeping local workers from searching employment out of town. Local employers are more likely to pay higher average wages than internationally owned corporations. ③ Investing in Community Local businesses are owned by folks who live in your community who are passionately invested in the welfare and future of the community. Keeping your shopping dollars local is a great way to reinvest in your town. Charities are often supported by local business, too; meaning more access to supports like hospitals, clinics, schools & sporting teams. ④ Customer Service and Experience Local owners know their clientele, offering products suitable for your specific area; based on their customer’s choices rather than national trends. Also, if anything goes wrong you have a local company to go to, personal touches and local face-to-face customer service means strong customer relationships.

We have all heard the sentiments “When you buy from a local business, someone actually does a happy dance.” And, “No big box store is going to sponsor your child’s soccer team.” We all love convenience, but nothing is more convenient than a prosperous local economy – you are able to direct what your spending does, make where we raise our families and spend our time a great place to call ‘Home’.
⑤ Shopping Online Many online retailers show deals that seem too good to be true, sadly this is often the case. Local shops offer very competitive pricing when you take the time to look; plus online, original prices tend to be inflated, making high-percentage discounts give false ideas of saving large. Independent companies can provide lots of great deals, too! Check locally before heading online. ⑥ Personality and Character The greatest thing about independent and small businesses is that people, not boards, and stockholders, run them! In a world increasingly dominated by chain stores all designed to look the same, independent businesses bring muchneeded originality and variety to communities. Unique, one-of-akind shops aren’t only ‘stores’, they become destinations – these attractions in turn make your town a popular stop, which is great for all businesses. ⑦ Environmental Impact Choosing a local company over a chain has a positive impact on the environment. Outdoor Planters that Last the Winter Through with Vikki Who knows what weather the start of the winter season will have? To ensure you are not outdoors creating your winter planters amid snow storms and freezing temperatures, we suggest your outdoor winter decor be completed as soon as the calendar has respectfully passed Remembrance Day. To prepare the pots, cut all remaining plant material off at soil level. Leave the roots and moist soil right in your pots (make sure they are pots that are “winter proof”). This will form the base to push in the evergreen boughs. Use a generous amount of evergreen boughs (pine, cedar, balsam and/or spruce) at various lengths to form a pleasing base and then add height

to the arrangement with red dogwood or birch branches. Accents fill in the body and can be natural accents like dried hydrangea blooms, pinecones, sumac, sedum heads (use spray paint to bump up the colour, if you wish) or decor accents that you purchase (shiny balls, wicker shapes, bows and the like). Be creative and have fun with your choices! Do remember that these arrangements can last throughout the entire winter so wire distinctly holiday accents to a stick that you can cut out once the festivities are over. While stars, pinecones and birch branches look winter-y, shiny red balls, gauzy bows and Santa faces look dated and out of place in February. Make your arrangements full
and lush so when you cut out the seasonal accents you are not left with large holes. The Canadian outdoors is Mother Nature’s cooler, so you do not need to water your outdoor arrangements unless we hit a really warm spell mid November and your evergreens look dry. Usually though, the moist air is more than sufficient to keep everything fresh and lovely from November to March. New Life in
The Old Tin Shed The Old Tin Shed has been a staple of the Bancroft community for the past 17 years and on June 1, 2019 the store opened its doors with new owners.
Kathryn & Geoffrey Webber have always dreamed of being business owners, and have been shopping at The Old Tin Shed with their family for years. Together they have 4 grown kids, and when they found themselves with the opportunity to purchase the church–turned tourist destination, they decided it was the chance of a lifetime. They sold everything, and moved out of the city to pursue entrepreneurship.
Kathryn says they are thrilled with the change of pace in their lives, both having come from fast-paced corporate jobs, and that this new endeavour and way of life in the north has had rejuvenating results – Geoffrey says he feels 10 years younger! The Old Tin Shed employs a creative team who have stayed with the store through its transition, and who are well suited to help you choose the best products to suit your style. Kathryn says they are the type of business owners who believe in leading by example, and believe that a collaborative environment - where each person’s strengths and efforts are appreciated, is

a recipe for success, along with providing “customer first” service. Together they steer the ship with Kathryn’s creative talent and background in design and marketing, and Geoffrey’s IT and communications experience; they split the tasks easily, and have a lot of fun working side by side. They also work together to create gorgeous upcycled statement pieces and live a make-and-sell lifestyle, which means each of their creations come with its own unique personal touches. The Old Tin Shed will remain the same landmark shopping destination in keeping with the original character of the shop, but with a few minor changes. Kathryn has a goal to curate a shop suitable for every shopper, and she works hard to fill the shelves with a selection of handmade, vintage/antique, upcycled and rustic ‘cottage chic’ finds. They want their clientele to feel like they have been inspired, or just come in and ‘Zen out’ while perusing. The Old Tin Shed will encompass Kathryn’s design aesthetic with more colour, a fresher, brighter selection for every generation, along with one-of-a-kind

finds for every budget. The classic cathedral windows have been opened to let in more light, and the store is filling for the holiday season. You will find a fully-stocked iron section with hooks, knobs and hinges for every DIY project, and a great selection of metal signs, lighting and décor, clothing, jewellery, giftware and everything in between. Locally sourced products line the shelves, and they are conscious of bringing in ethically sourced, environmentally friendly, sustainable products. The Old Tin Shed is simply a must-stop when in Cottage Country, especially when checking off your Christmas list. Kathryn is what Geoffrey refers to as a “Christmas-aholic”, she just can’t get enough of the holiday season! As her kids were growing Kathryn would always crank up the tune ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’ as the first snowflakes of the season fell. To this day – even though her kids are grown and away from the nest – she calls them to celebrate, playing

the classic song over the phone to them. With the holidays being such a favourite, Kathryn has big plans for the iconic church building! You can expect to see the store as an enchanted Christmas wonderland by mid-November; take home some of the magic when you come to see the fully decorated store. The Santa Claus Parade will go right by the door on December 7th, so come and watch the festive parade with them! The basement of the classic building is currently under renovation to become a studio space which will invite creative guests in to experience open mic/jam sessions, artistic gatherings, workshops, classes, book clubs and more. Christmas at The Cottage
Going Natural for Easy Decorating When you think of the origin of most of our Christmas decorating essentials, they actually come readily available from nature itself. Things like pine wreaths, cedar boughs, rooms lit by the soft light of a woodstove or fireplace, freshly cut trees, rustic wooden tree trimmings and arrangements right down to that decorative film of snow to top things off. What’s not to get excited about while hosting Christmas at a country cottage setting! Imagine the possibilities available just outside your door for next level decorating ideas to create that perfect ambiance for an ideal family getaway. Nature’s Craft Store An abundance of easy ideas wait to be discovered within the natural cottage setting. Fill bowls with pine cones to dress up counters, tables and dressers. Gather clusters of pine together for door knobs and top off with silk tassels or ornaments. Swag cedar boughs across bedheads to bring in fresh scents and act as unexpected details for guests. Summer Does Double Duty Turn summer decorative items into Christmas accoutrement with outdoor lanterns flanked with pine, and glass hurricanes placed in key locations for a welcoming entrance. Light a fire pit near the entrance for a cozy hit of light and drape blankets over outdoor chairs for added pattern and effect. Use throw pillows on outdoor benches to extend your indoor space. Use mittens to house cutlery at place settings, use berries, nuts or oranges to fill jars and insert a candle. Use branches in vases and hang ornaments or Christmas cards for color. Expand your garland by combining real and fake greenery, and dress with string and candy canes. Prop and Stage Hang skates, hockey sticks, mittens and scarves in strategic locations; like around a lantern, or lean outside for a pop of seasonal festivity. The Love of Metal “Perfection of the art is the goal – making money at it is the bonus” So says Christina Handley, a professional photographer and metal artist who pursues perfection while farming full-time with her husband, Boyd, on their farm near Burnt River, Ontario.
Old milk cans, stovepipes, shovels, handsaws – any piece of metal is fair game when her creative juices are flowing. She also uses new material but loves when it becomes gilded with rust and weather.
Since 1997 she has created art through the lens of her camera, and success has come through her love of horses, the results of which have found their way to the covers of “Horse Sport” (her first cover) and “Horse Illustrated”, among others.
Her inspirations come from everyday experiences – life on the farm with Boyd, their menagerie of animals, and the natural beauty which surrounds them. Her philosophy is borne of being a cancer survivor. “It gives you a more immediate perspective – it tells you that life is short, and it pushes you to do more of what you want to do.”
An artist herself, Handley has always had an appreciation for art across many disciplines – but she says, “I have always loved metal - it is my art purchase of choice”, and eventually it became her medium of choice. Three years ago, she bought a plasma cutter on a whim, and within four months she was taking orders for her pieces. She started out using – what else? – horses as her subject matter, on everything from round saw blades and old oil tanks to sheets of steel just waiting to be transformed. As her art evolved, she created mandalas, the intricacy of which are mind-boggling; ranging in diameter from 32 inches to 7 ½ feet, each has its own unique design. Her nature-themed pieces feature leaves, flowers, butterflies, mushrooms and more and range from garden art and home décor to functional pieces like fire rings. Each unique piece is hand-drawn and hand-cut – not a computer in sight.

Whereas the highlight of her photographic career was her first magazine cover, her greatest sense of accomplishment as a metal artist came when she was commissioned to create four metal panels featuring maple leaves, which were installed along the bridge in Fenelon Falls ON. Handley’s work appears in local art galleries and shops, and most weekends in the summer see her loading up her “Art Cart” and heading off to art festivals and shows throughout the area. Hooked Leisure Fishing with Pro Angler Mike Williams
A Well-Stocked Tackle Box is a Gift that Keeps on Giving Do you have a fishing fanatic in your life? ‘Tis the season for gift giving and I know there are a few fishing enthusiasts looking forward to some tackle under the tree. If you know what type of fish they enjoy casting a lure for, this is a great guide to do some holiday shopping with, ensuring your loved ones have a wellstocked tackle box come Spring! Remember, the type of gear you want to use is always species specific. Pan Fish For panfish and crappie I would suggest small, brightly coloured tube baits, twister tails, or small swim-baits rigged on light 1/16oz jig heads. These can be rigged with bobbers, or a float for strike indications or not. Medium to light spinning gear spooled with light line 4-8lb test monofilament line to target pan fish. Walleye You want to have an assortment of Rapalas J-9 or straight, in Perch Pattern or Black and Gold. Another versatile option is a lipless rattling crankbait, such as a Cotton Cordell Rattlin Rap in the Fire Tiger Colour, which can be reeled in steady or jig retrieved to trigger strikes from not-so-active fish. Heavier jig heads ¼- ½ also work well tipped with a twister tail grub, Gulp or live minnows.
These are tried and tested methods to catch early season walleye. Medium to medium heavy spinning or bait casting gear spooled with 10-20lb monofilament or braided line to target walleye. Pike Pike are very aggressive in nature and will strike at most anything that comes near their immediate territory. A spinner bait is a great way to cover water and trigger strikes from these toothy critters. Pike also love jerk baits like a Bomber Long A and larger soft plastic swim-baits. Be sure you have a good set of pliers, jaw spreaders and gloves on hand to help with unhooking these toothy beasts and be very careful when handling these fish as they are powerful and can easily flop around and get a hook stuck in you! Medium heavy to heavy spinning or bait casting gear strung up with 20-50 lb braid with a 6-10-inch wire leader to target the tooth infested pike. Reclaimed Wood Ideas that You Can DIY With a wide variety of reclaimed wood available in all sizes, grains and colors it isn’t hard to see why it has become a trend that fits right in at the cottage. Reclaimed wood can be sourced from an assortment of places, and in items such as pallets, old flooring, and shiplap or barn board. There is always some for sale somewhere, you just need to find it - finding a consistent supply can be tricky. I have had luck with companies that recover items prior to demolishing old buildings or barns. Pallets are around everywhere and with a little elbow grease they can develop a personality of their own. With these one of a kind pieces you can create so many things. It’s all about imagination, so start to think of features or accents that you’ve been dreaming to recreate. I’ve seen so many beautiful projects over the years, and I find it so inspiring to see how much wood is still loved enough to revive an old piece for a new use. Some wood looks better if left untouched where as others hide their character under the surface, much like people. Feature walls or ceilings are very popular. With a saw, some adhesive, nails, a level and a tape measure, it becomes a very
achievable DIY goal. Cut, glue and nail your first row, repeat with additional rows making sure to always check for level; or design a specific pattern or shape. As you go, check the rows and keep them the same distance from the ceilings and walls for a good sightline. The results will change the room completely, making it a unique reflection of you. Here are a few more ideas to get your imagination flowing: - A kitchen island, faux beams, firewood boxes, book shelves, coat hangers, benches, picture frames, shutters, window trims or even a headboard. The possibilities really are endless! Wood itself is so versatile, and by using a reclaimed piece, you are preserving its aged beauty - while adding a bit of your own. Happy Creating! Pow Wow
Celebrating Our First Nations An opportunity to form new friendships and renew old ones, it’s a time for dancers to display their stunning regalia while they honour the powerful traditions of their ancestors; Pow Wows are not just for entertainment – they are a celebration of culture and spirituality, a time for prayer and ceremony, and to tell stories of war, history and honour through dance. Nestled on the side of a hill in Lance Wood Park beside the sparkling waters of Chemong Lake, is a clearing surrounded
by tall trees where the annual Curve Lake Pow Wow takes place on the third weekend of September. It’s an enchanted setting, perfect for these gatherings where singers and drummers sit in the centre of a circle while dancers move around them in a clockwise direction, engaging in a unique dialogue with their Creator. It wasn’t always this way though. In 1876, the Indian Act made it illegal for the Indigenous people of Canada to conduct traditional ceremonies such as the Pow Wow. However, after petitioning by First Nations people these beautiful practices were revived, and now all are welcome to attend public Pow Wows. Respect for the ceremony, the regalia, and Pow Wow etiquette is imperative – direction is provided by an MC. A sacred fire is lit on the Friday night and the Pow Wow begins with a sunrise

ceremony at 6 am on Saturday. At noon on both days, Veterans are honoured for the sacrifices they’ve made, then all dancers take part in the Grand Entry. Throughout the day spectators enjoy Traditional Men’s and Women’s dancing defined by more subdued regalia, while Men’s Fancy and Women’s Fancy Shawl dancers bring vibrant splashes of colour to the circle entrancing audience members with their swirling, complex movements. Grass dancers also have colourful regalia and move their heads to the rhythm of the drum, while Jingle Dress dancers step through their special healing dance at a slower pace. The Intertribal dance provides an opportunity for audience members to join in the celebration of this rich culture that thrives on its connection to community through spirituality. Moira Gale

Those Were The Days “Tick Tock, Tick Tock”
November, December, the end of another year, or has it been a year? The months have gone fleeting by so quickly it seems like I just took the Christmas decorations down and it is already time to put them up again. The orange and red leaves have loosed their moorings, beckoning rakes to be taken out of garage storage and hinting all too soon to be replaced by snow shovels. My mother had a sage saying she repeated often, “days are long but the years are short.” How very true. I recently had a conversation with my cousin recalling when I was in grade two elementary school. My class, along with all the other Windsor, Ontario students, were issued small Union Jack flags and on June 6, 1939 we were bused to greet King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth who were making a whirlwind tour of Canada. Five years later our allies stormed the beaches at Normandy, June 6, D Day. A scant ten years quickly passed when I found myself standing at an altar as my bride-to-be walked down the aisle; it is hard to believe but that was sixty-five years ago. Has it been that long, where has the time gone? How well I remember when I was eleven years old - car horns honking, dancing in the streets, toilet paper rolls streamed across hydro wires and the air raid sirens finally silenced, the war was over and our brave men and women were coming home. But many, far too many, lay beneath foreign soil; on November 11th we remember them. It is sometimes hard to fathom WW II ended seventy-five years ago and so many of the warriors who were there have since taken their place in heaven, but we will remember them this year, next year and I pray many more years to come. Christmas, what a magical, wonderful time of year. So many years have flown by and so many memories are encased in the caverns of my mind: Dad lifting me up to place the angel atop our tree, asking Santa for a violin when I was only five years old and finding one among my presents, a toy one, albeit a violin. Salvation Army musicians playing carols under the light of a street lamp, the family gathering from far and wide to celebrate together with hugs, kisses and the best of well wishes. The long table when fifty-four relatives and friends sat for a Christmas feast. How I remember, after I was married, loading the trunk with presents and driving the many miles with my own family to be with my parents and siblings. There were nine of us, Mom and Dad, four sisters and two brothers, they are all gone and I am the only one left. Where has all the time gone? I liken life to be a steep hill, difficult to climb but when we reach the top and begin the slide down we seem to go faster and faster as the years go swiftly by, indeed, where has all the time gone? Some of our earliest campers, now parents, send their own children to the camps they once loved. Perhaps you work with or volunteer for a children’s community group. The PMA will also customize programming for your group during most evenings and weekends. It’s that time of year again, summer is now a memory, fall has come and gone, and winter is upon us. So, what are you going to do with yourself for the next few months ‘til spring? Why limit your cottage time to three seasons when you can experience excitement and adventure on more than 30,000 kilometers of Ontario Snowmobile Trails across Ontario. With an abundance of snow and consistent winters, Central Ontario is the perfect place to experience groomed trails; enjoying Mother Nature at her best, while seeing sights only accessible by snowmobile. Snowmobiling is a family-friendly sport that can be enjoyed by men and women, young or old, experienced or novice riders. Nothing beats the feeling of freedom and exhilaration as you cruise down your favorite trail, heading out on your next snowmobiling adventure with family and friends alongside. Snowmobiling gives you access to places you would normally not be able to travel any other time of the year. CHOCOLATE SALAMI A trick for the eye, this holiday cookie is the season’s tastiest treat! Ingredients & Amounts

1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Toast hazelnuts for 10 minutes in oven on a baking sheet. Transfer onto a clean dishcloth. Gather them up in the dishcloth and rub them, removing their skins. Grind hazelnuts to a fine consistency.
1½ cups of hazelnuts 1 cup of blanched almonds 1½ cups of walnuts 3 oz. of semi-sweet chocolate 1 cup of icing sugar zest of 1 orange ¼ teaspoon of ground cinnamon pinch of ground nutmeg pinch of ground cloves 1 extra-large egg, room temperature • ½ cup of icing sugar for dusting and rolling • kosher salt for dusting
2. Grind the walnuts and chocolate to a fine consistency using a hand or nut grinder. 3. Roughly chop the blanched almonds. 4. Place all of the ingredients into a medium-sized stainless steel bowl and stir together to combine. 5. Place the bowl onto the bottom of a double boiler with simmering water. Stir the mixture until the chocolate and icing sugar melt and the warm mixture holds shape when pressed firmly with a spoon. 6.
Place a rectangular piece of parchment paper onto your work surface and sprinkle with icing sugar. Transfer half of the salami dough onto the parchment paper, forming it into a log shape. Wrap the log up tightly in the parchment paper to complete the salami shape. Repeat with the remaining dough. Refrigerate for an hour or more or leave in a cool place to harden.
7. To serve: Unwrap salami. Roll in additional icing sugar before slicing into ¼-inch rounds. Sprinkle with a tiny pinch of kosher salt before serving.

SIRLOIN TIP ROAST There is nothing quite like a perfectly prepared Sirloin Tip Roast for the holidays. Ingredients • • • • • •
1 - 3.75 pound sirloin tip roast, room temperature 1 head of garlic, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons each of fresh rosemary, thyme and sage, finely chopped 1 tablespoon of kosher salt 1 tablespoon of black pepper 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
Instructions 1. Remove roast from fridge an hour and a half before preparing. 2. Preheat oven to 450°F with the rack in the middle position. Cut small holes into the outside of the roast and insert a slice of garlic in each. Place prepared herbs, salt, pepper and oil into a small bowl, stir together to form a paste. Rub paste evenly over the outside of roast before placing it, fat side up, on a wire rack in a roasting pan. 3. Place roast in oven for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 325°F and cook to desired doneness using a meat thermometer. 4. Remove from oven and cover loosely with foil for 10 minutes. 5. Slice roast and serve immediately.

Polarization is an internal filter in sunglasses that helps remove glare from your vision, which aids in reducing fatigue when exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time; it also improves vibrant colors that we see in nature. There are plenty of different brands, prices and styles of sunglasses out there. My recommendation is not to just look for brand or price, but to go and try them on during a nice sunny day - whether it be Winter or Summer, and see what is the most comfortable fit for you. Good quality sunglasses, if found properly can easily be used for many years; with that said, a good quality sunglass is more of an investment into the quality of your vision, protecting it for many years to come. Sally Harding Named Kawartha Chamber Citizen of the Year Sally Harding, President & CEO of Nightingale Nursing, is the Kawartha Chamber’s 2019 Citizen of the Year. Harding has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the area, both as a businessperson and community supporter. As a dedicated Rotarian for fifteen years, Harding gravitated to youth projects. She has hosted ten international exchange students, and through Rotary’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity, provided mentorship and advice to their Youth Council. Payge was motivated to start her own business after helping in her Aunt’s business, and after speaking with her Mom – took the step to create her own legacy, and she is focussed on making it grow. This gal has really done her research and knows loads about the ingredients she uses in all her products. Canadian Veteran Returns to the Netherlands 75 Years Later In 1944, young Private Ernie Wiles, a paratrooper with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, found himself in the air above Holland, in the middle of a war. 75 years later his vantage point was considerably more comfortable, and much less dangerous, as he found himself once again touching down in The Netherlands. The opportunity to return was thanks to the generosity of a group of Dutch businessmen, and their desire to acknowledge the debt owed to those Allied Forces members who fought to liberate Holland during World War II, by paying for a group of Veterans to return and receive a hero’s welcome. The trip occurs annually, coinciding with the anniversary of Operation Market Garden, which resulted in the liberation of the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and several smaller towns. So, on September 12, Wiles, who now resides in Lindsay, Ontario, found himself in the company of two other Canadian veterans, as well as three American and twelve British veterans, all bound for Europe for 10 days of celebrations and 75th Anniversary commemorations. Most of the participants were aged 95 and up – “at 93, Ernie was the baby of the group,” says Larry Day, who helped to organize the trip and accompanied the veterans overseas. Day adds, “Ernie got to talk to the British and American paratroopers,
and instant friendships were made. It was as if seventy-five years had just melted away.” There were many activities planned for the veterans, and everywhere they went they were greeted with such enthusiasm. “Everybody knew we were coming!” says Wiles. “I couldn’t ever have dreamed we would be treated like that after all these years!” He explains that wherever they went, they had to work their way through a crowd. “Everybody was cheering and shaking our hands – I really did feel like a rock star,” he adds. One of the highlights of the trip was a football game in Arnhem. Day says, “the Veterans were announced and as they entered the field the stadium went wild!” Wiles adds to that by saying “everybody in the stadium stood up and cheered – we couldn’t hear a thing except the roar of the crowd.” There were also quiet visits to cemeteries, get-togethers with Dutch cadets, and many other events which allowed the Dutch people to say thank you with sincerity and fanfare. Looking back on the trip, Wiles acknowledges the support of Fenelon Falls Legion Branch 238, which worked to arrange additional funding to cover insurance costs for his trip. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” he explains. “It really was a “bucket list” trip, and I am so grateful to everyone who helped make this happen.” By Belinda Wilson

Youth Entrepreneur Award Cottage Country Lifestyle Magazine offers heartfelt congratulations to Jailea MacDonald on winning the Youth Entrepreneurial Award at this year’s Peterborough Women’s Expo.
A Permanent Kind of Love
Jailea is a 15-year-old entrepreneur who sells handmade goods specifically for pet lovers. At the Women’s Expo this year Jailea had a table full of treasures to be sold. From collars and adorable little bandanas to signs and Christmas ornaments there is a little something for each and every human wanting to show their pet some love.
John and Lynn Vangalis have a huge space in their hearts for animals, and with a crew of loving pets at home it’s not hard to see how they feel when they talk about their fur-babies. Ten years ago, the couple opened Inspiration Tattoo on Chemong Rd. in Peterborough, and for the past five years they have been heading up an event which raises money for animals in need.
With the $1000 award provided by SDP Communications, Jailea now has the support to grow her small business while focussing on her true passion - giving back to her local community through donations to local pet shelters. Jailea has been a dog lover from the time she was quite young and says ‘I’m obsessed with dogs, and someday I would like to open a pet rescue & veterinary centre. There I hope to offer services for all kinds of pets and pet owners that are affordable and achievable for everyone. I think it is hard to have to say goodbye to a pet just because you can’t afford the care it needs in special circumstances.”

Pawprint Days 2019 - an event where you can choose a paw print and have it tattooed on you for charity, was held at Inspiration Tattoo from October 25-27th 2019 – with another (4th) day opened up for high demand as they had an 8-page waiting list for appointments! John, who has been tattooing for 30+ years, did 165 tattoos over the course of the 3-day event raising $8850. 100% of these proceeds were donated to the Lakefield Animal Welfare Society this year. LAWS is a No Kill Shelter located in Lakefield which runs with no Government funding, so they rely heavily on individuals who are able to donate, along with fundraising opportunities like Pawprint Days.
Jailea has also been working hard to make frequent donations to many local shelters. Not yet old enough to volunteer, but still wanting to make a difference, she has even gone as far as asking for pet food as Christmas presents from her family which she then donates to needy shelters. When you speak with Jailea you can see the passion in her eyes as she speaks about wanting to make a difference in her community and the communities of animal lovers everywhere; we can’t wait to see what she does next!
John and Lynn of Inspiration Tattoo also linked up with the Peterborough Chrysler team collecting donations on-site for their “Fill Our Trucks for LAWS” event - where donations of shelter wish list items like pet food, cleaning supplies and litter were collected in trucks provided by Peterborough Chrysler. Cottage Country Emily participated in the event, getting a paw print tattoo of her own while supporting a great cause. Congratulations to Inspiration Tattoo for another successful year!

Receives Another $25k Pledge The Peterborough Humane Society The Peterborough Humane Society’s campaign to build its first-of-its-kind Animal Care Centre is well underway, with yet another donor pledging $25,000 towards the new Centre. The Leask family was inspired to give by their son, Todd, a dedicated supporter of the Humane Society, who has been walking dogs there for over five years.

The Leask family toured the existing facility this past summer and were impressed with the work and dedication of the staff and volunteers, despite the limitations of the building.
The Leask family are avid dog lovers and are particularly excited about the Canada’s first Provincial Dog Rehab Centre (in partnership with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society). Behaviour specialists will create individual rehabilitation programs for dogs needing more support because of abuse, neglect or trauma.
Designed by Peterborough-based Lett Architects, the new Peterborough Animal Care Centre will sit on 20 acres of land on Technology Drive. The purpose-built facility will be home to the Humane Society’s new Adoption and Education Centre, designed with animals’ well-being in mind, providing more space, natural light and reducing stress, and will set a new standard for animal welfare in Canada. Mix the bouillon cube in boiling water in a mixing bowl until dissolved. Add 1 beaten egg and then add the remaining ingredients. Mix until blended - Do not over-mix. Add the dough to a floured cutting board and roll out dough. Cut with dog bone shaped cookie cutter. Place a rack on a cookie sheet and place biscuits on the rack. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Hanging Christmas Tree Every year we make sure to add something new to our collection of Christmas decorations. Sometimes we make things, and sometimes it’s something like a new strand of lights, or another garland. This year we made something new - the kids loved decorating a second ‘tree’. We used sticks we had pruned from one of the trees in our yard, but it would add to the adventure to go out on a walk to find the perfect sticks to make your hanging tree. You will need enough sticks that you can trim them to make the multi-level shape of your tree. I then used fine wire to attach them. I started at the bottom with the largest stick and worked my way to the top of the tree. You could also use string or twine for more movement in your creation. Be sure to make a loop at the top of the tree so it can be hung up. Once I had all the branches attached the kids were able to decorate it. We used decorations we found at the dollar store, or decorations that didn’t make it onto our family Christmas tree. Tie on each decoration with a little bit of thread or fishing line. Another option, if your tree will be close enough to an outlet, is to add lights. Help your kids get creative, there are so many ideas on Pinterest or in craft books for fantastic Christmas decorations you could make yourself and use for the tree. Maybe decorate the tree with other finds from a walk in the woods; pinecones, moss, leaves. The possibilities are endless. Emily Ireland

What is the Difference Between Tutoring, Academic Upgrading and Brain Training?
What Does Your Child Need?
TUTORING: Tutoring is basically re-teaching and reviewing what has been taught in class. If your child was sick and missed classroom instruction or if you moved and changed schools and missed some concepts or content, then tutoring will help. This assumes that your child has no problem actually understanding concepts and content. ACADEMIC UPGRADING: If your child is performing in school significantly below grade level, perhaps being moved to the next grade without mastering the concepts and content of the previous grade - a standardized academic assessment is needed to determine the missed concepts and content. An individualized, academic program can target these areas and bring the student up to their grade level. However, academic upgrading will not be as successful if there is learning challenges. BRAIN TRAINING: If your child is struggling to read or can read but has difficulty comprehending or trouble understanding math concepts or has a lot of trouble processing or comprehending information - then it is likely there is an underlying difficulty. My experience is that the primary caregiver (usually the mother) knows their child best. If you help your child with their homework and they just can’t seem to grasp the concept or you need to repeat content because it is forgotten the next day or your child repeatedly gets frustrated and shuts down or refuses to learn, then there might be a learning disability. Testing by a trained psychologist is your next best step. Tutoring is not the answer because it does not target the reason your child struggles to understand concepts or read fluently. Tutoring will actually increase the frustration level. Brain training, based on proven neuroscience can strengthen the brain much like fitness training can strengthen the body. Brain Training can improve weak cognitive skills such as short and long-term memory, auditory and visual processing, attention and reasoning. If you have concerns ask us for more information.
