Megan McGregor
For Megan McGregor, the lure of fishing isn’t a lazy afternoon on a nearby lake, idly casting for whatever fish might meander past. Rather, it is the exhilaration of the chase, the adrenalin rush of the strike and the thrill of landing the big one.
In Megan’s case, “the big one” is none other than the muskellunge, or musky. “It’s about chasing after the predator, the top of the food chain,” she says as she explains why musky fishing has her hooked. She adds the challenge is also greater because of the smaller musky population, compared to other sport fish species. Some would say that a sport involving rods over 9 feet long and lures bigger than most of the fish this writer has ever caught would be a daunting prospect for anyone – and let’s not forget muskellunge can grow to 5 feet long and weigh over 50 pounds. No, the search for this “fish of 1,000 casts” is not for the faint of heart, nor is it something one would readily associate with women.

Megan McGregor to the rescue! Shimano, a world leader in the development and manufacture of angling equipment and gear, recruited Megan to their pro team two years ago, and it is her job to help promote women in fishing. While she cringes at the term “fishing influencer”, she explains that she just wants to bring different people to the sport of fishing. She is a proud ambassador for Shimano, Lululemon, Musky Maniacs, Dadson Blade Baits, Blue Water Baits and Musky Candies, and makes good use of her connections in promoting her passion for musky fishing. Through her social media and blog posts, she shares her passion for the sport and lets the reader tag along as she travels across Ontario, from Lake St. Clair - where her passion

for fishing began – to Lake of the Woods near Kenora, and into Quebec. Most weekends during musky season will find her and her partner, Luke, on the water.
and be open to the experience; learn the basics, like casting and the safe removal of fish from the lure. Most importantly, embrace the challenge and enjoy the experience.
Here in the Kawarthas, Megan’s favourite lakes are Scugog, Little, Katchawanooka and Chemong, as well as the Otonabee and Pigeon rivers, and once the season opens you can find her out there every weekend. By the third week of June she and Luke head north, as the northern rivers begin to open up.
If you want to take up musky fishing in cottage country, the Kawartha Lakes Chapter of Muskies Canada is an invaluable resource: www.muskiescanada.ca/kawartha-lakes/ or on Facebook @MCIKL
Always eager to promote the sport to other women, Megan welcomes inquiries, and offers these tips for women who want to get started in the sport: join a local women anglers group; start by making it a fun day out with friends – take lots of snacks

Planning for the Future

Summer 2020 ~ Cottage Country Lifestyle Magazine

As your family dynamic changes, so sometimes do your boat lift needs. Where once you needed a smaller boat for fishing, as the family grows - so does your boat! R&J Machine has been manufacturing waterfront products for homes and cottages for over 45 years. Every year the demand changes different boat trends change, from small bowriders and wakeboard boats to leisure and sport pontoon boats, so the lift designs are constantly changing to accommodate the different hull designs and specifications. When purchasing a new lift, think about what your future boating trends may be. Can you see yourself upsizing in the future, going from a wakeboard boat to a pontoon boat? By planning ahead, you can reduce the need to have to keep buying a new lift every time you upgrade your boat. If your current lift is wide enough and has a large enough capacity, you can switch out your standard bunks to a raised bunk if your new boat has a lower driveshaft or skeg. You can switch out your bunks to pontoon bunks or add a centre Tritoon bunk. Consider a set of side guides or an electric winch to make operating the lift in rough conditions easier. What about adding a canopy to your lift to protect your boat from harmful UV rays or rain showers? Thinking about buying a new lift to protect your boat or upgrading your existing one? Why not deal directly with the manufacturer by visiting rjmachine.ca. They service what they sell, and you will be supporting a local business. R&J Machine www.rjmachine.ca, 705-652-6731

Top Water Temptation One of the most exciting ways to pursue almost any sportfish in Cottage Country is fishing a topwater lure. Experiencing just one of these exciting heart thumping strikes will make you a fan for life of this technique. Whether you are in open water calling up fish from the depths, fishing for giant smallmouth or musky, or targeting shallow water largemouth in heavy cover such as pads or matted vegetation; there is a bait, action and equipment suited to each which will help you increase your hook-ups and help you land more fish. In shallow water situations with heavy cover, you need to go at them with a heavy action fast tip rod preferably rigged up with a 8:1 or high ratio reel and heavy line, 30lb or higher braid to allow you to make long casts, get a good hookset and be able to muscle those big bass to the top as quick as possible. Making long cast in these situations is crucial as fish are easily spooked when in these areas. Some of my favorite baits to use are soft plastic frog type baits like the Zoom Horny Toad or a hollow body frog such as the Booyah Pad Crasher. Another favourite of mine is a Buzzbait which is a bladed type bait with a loud propeller that spins on the surface causing a ton of commotion.
first few hours in the morning, and last few hours before dark seem to be the best; but they can work all day when the conditions are right, preferably lowlight. Finally, increase your hook-up rate - be sure to avoid the temptation to set the hook on the explosion, it is an easy thing to say, but harder to do in the moment. Sometimes the fish miss the bait, and you want to keep it in the area where you get the strike. Instead, keep working the bait until you feel the weight of the fish - then set the hook and let ‘em have it!! I hope this information helps improve your top water game! Cheers, Happy Fishing Mike Williams
In deeper water presentations I tend to go with a medium heavy shorter glass rod or hybrid carbon/glass with a softer tip. I still like to use 2030 lb. braid. Braided line has zero stretch so you can be sure you are getting a good hookset - and the parabolic qualities of a glass rod as opposed to a carbon fiber rod allow you to load up and lean into the hookset, avoiding yanking the hook out of the fish’s mouth. My favourite lures are poppers or walking type baits, or a combination of the two such as the Evergreen SB 105. Another favourite for both bass and musky is the Whopper Plopper. From experience the most successful times to target top water bites are when fish are the most active, the

Summer
Drink Daze As summer ushers in dock parties, happy hours and other social distancing opportunities to finally connect with our social circles, it’s always fun to explore new creative drink ideas. I use the word “ideas” because it doesn’t always have to follow a set recipe. Using what we have readily available can often yield interesting new approaches to what we serve up to friends and family this summer. A random peach, a lone lemon, a one-off pear and suddenly one can often discover potential for mix and match drink ingredients.
Sangria Sunset This is a classic favourite although my “idea” of this drink is loose direction based on your taste preference for sweet or tart. My preferred red base is any Argentinian Malbec to cut through the fruit flavors to lend a robust and hearty foundation. To that I add lemonade, orange juice, pineapple syrup from canned rings followed by freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice. Upon completion you can decide to top with soda if it tastes too sweet and if too tart top with ginger-ale. Fruit ingredients can be

whatever you have in your crisper along the lines of apple, orange, grapes, pear, berries and top with lemon and lime slices. Feel free to garnish with any of these select fruits. For added effect, I keep mason jars in the freezer and add a splash of peach schnapps over ice before adding the Sangria mixture. Guests appreciate the details and you will want to make this in a large size vessel for readily available refills. The sun will set on this one before you know it!

Many drink classics hold the top drink list for 2020 including: the Aperol Spritz, the Mojito and I know the Negroni has made a huge comeback. The Old Fashioned and Whiskey Sour still hold top spots and who doesn’t appreciate a retro Daiquiri for a docktail. Find your social circle for summer 2020 and enjoy finding a new hack for your favorite cocktail, hearkening back to a classic or inventing something entirely new you can call your own.
Tipsy Loon This beverage my sister and I have been making for years and you could name it after your cottage road if you want to further personalize it. Grab your coconut flavoured rum, add orange juice, pineapple juice and here’s the clincher: open a can of fruit cocktail and add about one inch of the fruit cocktail to the bottom of a rock crystal glass. Slip in some of the sweet fruit cocktail syrup as well. You will be a tipsy loon for sure, best to stay on dry land though for this one!
Kawartha Kiss This one gets a little more specific if you can find raspberry lemonade. There are a few brands available and you can experiment with whichever one provides the level of sweetness you most appreciate. Select a goblet type bowl glass filled with ice. Add half of the raspberry lemonade to the glass and make the other half prosecco. Top with mint, berries or lemon rind. The compliments coming your way for this drink will be focused on its light and sparkling approach along with its presentation appeal. Keep the Kawartha kisses to yourself though!

Thinking Outside the Box Summer 2020: a season of change. At home, with fewer friends and parties happening around us we can take stock of our gardens and spend time muddling around in them, but with what plant material, or even soil for that matter? Who knew a health pandemic would lead to a shortage of plants, soil and mulch? So, what happened? Simply put, the timing of mid-March for encouraging all to quarantine was not ideal with greenhouse operators having to quickly make planting decisions based on news reports of retail life not being normal until summer; as a result, we all planted and ordered conservatively. Now, with garden centres open, many people still home quarantining and not planning to travel this summer, plant purchases are “off the charts”. More people than ever “got into” gardening and bought twice as much, all with only half the stock available in the province. So perhaps you don’t have lime potato vine in your containers because your garden centre was sold out or you have orange geraniums instead of red or the space for the new clematis is still bare. Why not step outside the box and try a Swedish ivy in place of the potato vine? Why not feed the soil with compost in the area where the clematis will be planted next year? You can move a small garden statue there for now or split off a piece of hosta and plant it there, knowing that when you plant the clematis eventually it needs foliage in front of it to shadow and cool the roots. Your perennials are getting too big in one section? Find a cloudy day and split them, then take the afternoon to watch the sun pattern in your garden. With this valuable information, find the best locations to re-plant the divisions and be sure to water extremely well. Taking this usual year to study your garden, try something new and rejoice in small victories may be a healthy change for us all. quality custom homes anywhere within the Kawartha Lakes area. Their mission is to become their clients’ single source for all their building and renovation needs while maintaining their high level of integrity, craftsmanship, professionalism and innovation. In short, their clients’ satisfaction is their number one goal. To achieve all that, they have a process which involves the client every step of the way.
Explore Cottage Country
The Four Points Process Introduction It begins with the first meeting, when the client meets the team. They are presented with a portfolio of previous projects as well as a list of credible references. The Four Points team asks questions, takes notes and offers advice in order to put together a comprehensive plan. When they leave the meeting, they have all the information required to proceed with an accurate and fair estimate. Estimates & Contracts Following the initial meeting they will begin drawing up the estimate and contract immediately. Keeping in mind that every client is unique, the contract is structured to meet each individual’s needs. The estimates are structured so that the client can choose between Fixed Price format or Time and Material format. Each has their pros and cons, and all this is explained in detail. The client is provided with breakdowns of all points in the construction process; this ensures they are fully informed and confident in their contractor. Building Process As anyone who has gone through a new build or an extensive renovation can attest, the building process can be a complex process. From helping with design and building drawings to post-construction maintenance Four Points Construction is committed to ensuring the project runs efficiently and on budget. This is achieved by hiring professional, fully-insured and licensed sub-trades and providing complete breakdowns of invoices and time sheets. Leaving nothing to chance, they book sub-trades in advance and ensure materials are ordered so everything and everyone is onsite at the required time. The last job each day is to ensure the job site is left in a clean, safe and orderly manner. Four Points Construction take pride in their projects from the removal of the first bucket of earth to the day the keys are handed over to the client. Post Construction Process Customer satisfaction is Four Points Construction’s number one goal, and they base the success of each project on the client’s response when asked for a referral and recommendation. They also offer any aftersales maintenance that may be required by the client. Attention to detail and an unwavering work ethic are the backbone of this company. They invite you to visit their website, follow them on Facebook, or just pick up the phone and give them a call – they would love to turn your dream into their next project. www.fourpointsconstruction.ca info@fourpointsconstruction.ca On Facebook @ Four Points Construction 705-740-5740

Registering over 500 units of condominium within the City of Peterborough, it could be said that Triple T has truly set the watermark for the area. What you need to know about
Replacing Screens With mosquito season upon us, replacing window and door screens is a common thing people need to do, but many of us might think we need to hire someone to fix it. Replacing your window or door screen is easy when you know how. Let’s walk you through it and turn things around in no time. Time: allow an hour or so to complete the job. Head to the local hardware store with a list and about forty bucks. Things you will need: A flat head screw driver, a decent pair of scissors, a utility knife, screen spline and spline rolling tool, an appropriate sized roll of screen, allowing enough for this time and next. Tip: use a heavier gauge mesh for patio doors and a shade style on the sunny side to keep things cool. 1. Find a well lit flat surface to work on. Safety glasses are always a must. Get out your tools. 2. Find the end of the black plastic spline and gently work it out of the groove. Pull it by hand to remove the rest. Remove the screen. 3. Place the old screen over the new one for a template, allowing an additional 2” on all four sides. 4. Place the new screen onto the frame squarely. Rest the new spline on the groove and start to roll it in with some pressure to get it started. Hold the roller firm and straight to make sure that it's in. 5. Cut the spline where they meet and trim off the extra screen with the utility knife, not much pressure needed. Use the flat head screw driver to tuck the corners in. 6. Reinstall the screen, then sit and admire. Take your time. Don’t think of it as work but simply an hour well spent. Ride With Us “Staycation” has become a popular term over the last couple of years and it is evident to those of us who are in the trails business that this trend isn’t going away. In 2020 all off-road organizations have seen an incredible increase in the number of new people joining the sport. More and more people from the GTA are buying ATVs and dirt bikes and traveling north to seek out trails each weekend. As well, many people have moved to our area because of the recreational opportunities we have to offer. Local communities are enjoying the benefits of the trail tourism dollars and riders are enjoying what the communities have to offer them. Here in the Kawarthas we have seen a significant increase in traffic on the trails, motorized and non-motorized, which is a wonderful sight during such difficult times. As all our trails are shared-use we see everything from walkers and cyclists to ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides. We are seeing more and more families enjoying the trails together and that’s why Kawartha ATV Association (KATVA) moved forward with a
28
plan in 2019 to start a dirt bike club called Kawartha Off Road Motorcycle Association (KORMA). We have fielded calls and emails over the years from people who have both ATVs and dirt bikes in the family, and they are looking for a place they can ride together. We saw this as an opportunity to bring them all together on our trails. So far in 2020 it has been a great success. We are seeing many more dirt bike riders on the trails and the club has doubled in size in its first year. We are also a member club of the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders, so we see OFTR members visiting our area from all over Ontario.
This year we are working on mapping and signing those trails so that we can open them to our members. There is something here for everyone which is what makes the Kawartha Lakes so great. If you have any questions about our trails, whether you are a cyclist, hiker or motorized user, please contact us at www.katva.ca and we would be happy to help you. Kawartha ATV Association, PO Box 21, Lindsay 705-328-0931 www. katva.ca
ATVs and dirt bikes can share most of the trails in the KATVA trail system while still allowing some single track and ATV-only trails for some those who want them. There is a significant single-track trail system in the Somerville Forest near Kinmount for those who are looking for that. KATVA also owns some land in the 5 Points trail system and in 2019 we allowed the organizers of the Corduroy Enduro race to build some new trails on our property as part of their event.

Baking Bread This spring, as the world was hit with a pandemic, my family routine suddenly changed. As we practiced social distancing and my children could not attend school or daycare, my forty-hour work week turned into a one hundred and sixty-eight-hour work week of full-time parenting. It took a couple weeks for us to adjust to our new schedule, but with the extra time I had on my hands and the need to find activities to keep three children occupied, we turned to baking. I’ve always been a baker of cakes, muffins and cookies, but I had never made homemade bread. So, like most moms these days, I scoured Pinterest for the very best recipe and then called our amazing local bulk food store who thankfully had yeast and flour in stock. We donned our aprons and the kids and I set to baking. Bread making can be a bit tricky. Although there is a recipe to follow, you cannot be exact. The flour amount can change depending on the temperature and humidity in the air. You have to find the right feel to the dough to know you’ve added just the right amount of flour. We had a few loaves that never made the cut early on. But over the last few months, the kids and I have successfully made about thirty loaves of bread and over a hundred hamburger buns. I love working with the dough, I love the accomplishment of making fresh bread for the week and I love the smell of my kitchen while it bakes. We always make an extra loaf to take to a neighbor or family member later in the day which helps teach my kids to be generous and kind. Breadmaking has become very important to me. The experience of setting aside a time each week to prepare fresh bread for my family is something that has set the tone for other changes in our weekly routine. Instead of driving our kids to daycare, school and evening activities, our weekends and evenings are spent together as a family playing games, taking walks, going for hikes and of course baking. It has been a time to reconnect with each other, to talk with each other and at the end of the day we break bread together. Guiding You Home to Cottage Country
Picture yourself stepping out the door to take a deep breath of fresh air, hearing the wind in the treetops and taking a stroll through your expansive yard – all while on a break from your home office. During the last few months people have become accustomed to spending more and more time at home. Home has become the same four walls for work, school, and play; and many are re-evaluating their living spaces, and for some that means leaving the city. For many of us living in larger cities has been a choice of convenience, needing to be close to your place of work, along with the ease of city living. But times are changing and city rent is rising. With COVID-19 coming in hard and many now working from home, lots of people are turning their sights to small town living. Folks are setting their sites on moving north to gain more space and adopt a slower pace of life – plus, they get a better bang for their buck buying a property in Cottage Country than purchasing at larger Toronto price tags. Lighthouse Real Estate is excited about this influx of buyers looking to relocate, and they want to help you find that perfect property. With interest rates at a current low, now is a great time to buy. The team at Lighthouse have many new measures in place for the safety of staff and clients. This ensures seeing properties during these times of physical distancing and isolation can still be done safely and securely. Perhaps you are looking for a weekend getaway, or something for year-round enjoyment; the family at Lighthouse Real Estate will work with you at your pace to find the perfect property for you and your family. Need something with a home office? Rental potential? Acreage, or waterfront? They will help you navigate all the details at a pace that makes you feel comfortable, all while checking off your list of wants and needs. Striving to maintain the highest standard of customer care, the team at Lighthouse will work hard to find the best property for you, your family and your budget. Lighthouse Real Estate Ltd. A Century of the Trent-Severn Waterway The year 2020 marks one hundred years since the Trent-Severn Waterway was completed. On the morning of 23 June 1920, a dynamite blast in the Couchiching Canal removed the last obstacle for navigation between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. Eighty-seven years after the construction of its first lock at Bobcaygeon, “The Waterway” was truly open. The idea of a water connection between the upper and lower Great Lakes was considered seriously after the War of 1812 because the British military in Kingston, Montreal, and York had found supplying and reinforcing garrisons and forces on Georgian Bay and Lake Huron difficult. Because it took so long to complete, the Trent-Severn’s military value was nullified – although during World War 2, seven Orillia-built Fairmile patrol boats used it to reach southern Canadian shipyards for arming and commissioning. The Trent Canal, as it was named originally, was built in divisions – from the middle (the Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn, Burleigh, and Fenelon Falls locks) outward. Second came the Peterborough-Lakefield Division,
Since 1994
followed by the Simcoe-Balsam Lake and Ontario-Rice Lake divisions; last was the Couchiching-Port Severn Division. Without a military necessity for the waterway, the Canal was proposed as a barge route for hauling western grain from Georgian Bay ports to southern Canada. By 1900, railways had already joined Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay. This left recreational boating and tourism as the only role for the water route. One reason for even finishing the project was that too much money had been spent to leave it uncompleted. Not a lot of boaters navigate the entire length of the Trent-Severn Waterway, but there is considerable localized traffic all along it. Thousands of people go over the Peterborough and Kirkfield lift locks annually – many just for the novelty, but others enroute to somewhere along the system. Every few years Americans in large boats traverse the Waterway as part of “The Loop” – a trip from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Huron and down the Mississippi River.
However one relates to the Trent-Severn Waterway, we can all wish this grand lady “Happy Birthday” in 2020.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS
“It Is a Wonderful Life” I was stopped in one of the RIDE checks; the officer asked if I had anything to drink lately and I replied, “No I don’t drink or smoke.” After a pause, I continued with what I thought was a witty retort, “I guess I live a pretty dull life, huh?” He only smiled and waved me on. Later in the day I reflected on that encounter and thought to myself, “wait a minute, my life is far from dull.” I do have a small sip of white wine during our Christmas dinner and once in a great while I take a puff of a cigarette until it makes me dizzy and I wonder why I did such a stupid thing. I have a great wife and a terrific family I love dearly and am fully aware of their love in return. I have been a freelance writer for thirty years, have a published a book and am honoured to be invited as a guest speaker for various meetings and club gatherings. My mind began drifting to the past sixty years or so and I wanted to go back and find that officer and tell him my life is full and I am not dull at all. I had my very first written article published in the Windsor Daily Star when I was twelve years old. I still remember the rush I felt reading my own words. Getting married at the age of nineteen was certainly an event far from being dull. During my twenties and thirties I wrote songs, one of which was recorded by a famous Austrian singer named Regina, a talented girl we were fortunate to visit in Austria and who, with her husband, visited our home in Ennismore. During those years it was more fun than work writing a few radio and television commercials, fun because it let me be creative and inventive. My brother passed away at an early age, which affected me greatly. For the next half dozen years my sister-in-law played the accordion and I strummed a guitar as we toured much of the Windsor, Ontario area and even a trip to Ohio, providing our own musical accompaniment to the sermons I was asked to offer. I am not entirely sure how the transition was made but I ended up singing in a country/western band, a time of my life I truly enjoyed. I was hit by a car driven by a drunk driver and spent some time laid up, broke my hand playing goal in an industrial hockey league, and endured a heart attack and eventually a heart operation. We have two sons, seven grandchildren and four great grandkids so, why am I sharing bits and pieces of my life? Well I gave it some serious thought, and if some of you are reading this and thinking your life is dull, as I hastily and without forethought evaluated my own, just stop for a while and realize your life has not passed you by, you are still riding the adventure, climb back onto that train of life and enjoy. None of our lives are dull if we truly think about it. By: Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Tom Green, Stained-glass Artist
Shining a Light in Haliburton County By Belinda Wilson
Haliburton stained-glass artist Tom Green reflects on 40 years spent practicing his art by saying, “It’s really all I’ve ever done.” His creative path had a very different beginning. After high school, he studied Fine Art in Kingston at St. Lawrence College and Queen’s University, in the disciplines of photography and printmaking.
in a new artistic direction and eventually a couple of hundred miles north. A Metis-First Nation, Green does not define himself as an indigenous artist. “I live the life, practice what I preach – but it’s what I am, not who I am.” He adds “I don’t sign any of my work. My gift is from The Creator, and it is his to sign.” Green’s work features the beauty of the world which surrounds him: trees, herons and loons feature prominently but not exclusively in his work, which is for sale in his shop at Glass Eagle Studios, located on his property. It can also be found at the Ethel Curry Gallery in Haliburton Village and at the Eclipse Art Gallery at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville. Commission work figures prominently in his catalogue; currently he is two 8-foot windows away from completion of a four-year 35-window project at a synagogue in Markham. “I do all the work here at my studio, and when I have a couple of windows completed, we load them up and drive them down to Markham for installation.” Besides working full time as a stained-glass artist, Green occupies his time in his gardens, growing his own herbs and vegetables from his own seeds. The gardens have also become a project to help local youth; co-op students work in the gardens, learning everything from planting and cultivating to harvesting the crops, and gathering and preparing the seeds for the next year.
Back at home in Niagara Falls, he responded to an ad – two stained glass artists from Germany had accepted commissions in several local restaurants and they required a photographer to catalogue the work in their studio. “While I was waiting around to photograph some pieces, I picked up a cutter and began fiddling around with discarded bits of glass. That led to basic instruction from the artists, and I fell in love with the art form,” Green explains. When their commissions were finished, the artists disbanded – Tom picked up a glass cutter which was lying on an abandoned work table, slipped it into his pocket and walked away; away from the studio and from his profession as a photographer, and towards a life which led him
Since 1994
Visitors to the property often purchase produce grown there, and 10% of all sales goes back into the community to help local youth. The students also work in the studio – an old schoolhouse circa 1871, of course – where they can explore their own creativity and receive instruction in art and in life, which Green hopes will provide valuable tools as they choose their own paths. Green reflects on the art forms he knows best: “There is a lot of similarity between photography and stained glass. Both are a study in light – without light neither would be possible.” You are invited to visit – come for the studio, stay for the gardens, or vice versa – at 2801 Blairhampton Road, Minden. The studio is open year ‘round, by chance – “if we’re here we are open”, he says.

A New Way of Working For more than 40 years, the Buckhorn Community Centre (BCC) has been the heart of this small community. From annual fundraising events to ongoing activities for residents and visitors, the BCC is an attraction unto itself. But then came COVID-19 and the doors had to be closed temporarily. “We made the difficult decision to cancel our Spring Craft Show, Canada Day activities, the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts and other events planned,” said Judy McWhirter, General Manager of the BCC. “But, being the creative group we are, we’ve adapted to launch some exciting new fundraising opportunities while keeping our community safe.” Among those projects include an online fundraising campaign which has brought in more than $12,000 to date. On-line orders can be placed for rain barrels. Plus, free Canada Day kits were made available by curbside pickup to members of the public with activities to do with the family. To view and support the artists who would have been exhibiting in the Buckhorn Festival of the Arts this year, visit www.buckhornartfestival.ca. “We’re structuring our events and activities so we can maintain our physical distancing and follow the rules,” says Judy. “But we hope we can all come together again soon. It will look a lot different than what we are used to, but our community is strong.” As a not-for-profit organization, the BCC relies on the funds raised throughout the year to pay for operating costs. “We hope that people will continue to support our efforts,” Judy says. Bringing
Southern Barbecue to Cottage Country
Cory Wannamaker loves to cook. More accurately, he loves to barbecue, and he has brought his passion to the most unlikely of places – a food truck located behind the Douro Community Centre. When talking about his love of creating great food, he says he was “in and out of restaurants for a number of years”. Together with his wife, Rebecca, he dreamed of eventually getting his own place. Then he met up with Ryan and Amy Sloan, who shared in that dream; Cory and Ryan went into business together, although he credits their wives with being “the cogs that keep the wheels turning”. He adds, “Amy works with me during the week, and Ryan and Rebecca come in on the weekends, and we just get it done.” Cory knew exactly what he wanted to cook. “I take Southern Barbecue and work it into non-traditional dishes. If you took a southern guy who grew up around smokers, and then sent him around the world he would cook what is available, his way. That’s what we do at Chuckwagon BBQ.” The next hurdle was finding a location. “We were struggling to find a spot, and then the location behind the Douro Community Centre became available,” Cory explains. “We thought we’d give it a try, to get started – it’s a little bit out of the way, but with the amazing community support we have received, we can’t imagine being anywhere else.”
Since 1994
Using only wood-fired cookers – maple, oak, sometimes fruit woods – they create mouthwatering southern barbecue fusion food to please even the most discerning palate. Their best sellers are brisket (Cory’s favourite) and their fried chicken sandwich. “Everything is a work in progress, and we are constantly trying to improve upon what we have. When COVID hit, we weren’t sure what would happen, but we started doing custom freezer packs, which have been really popular. Reconnect in Fenelon Falls As you drive through Fenelon Falls this summer it may seem like any other summer. The downtown is alive with beautiful flowers, boaters are travelling through Lock 34, and the shops, restaurants and accommodations are open for business. A closer look reveals that things are a little different. Walking through downtown you’ll see that some businesses are taking this time to renovate while others have updated their stores for a fresh new shopping experience. Businesses of all sizes have adapted and incorporated new health and safety protocols to offer a safe in-person shopping experience as well as curbside, delivery or online shopping opportunities. Enjoying a meal, local craft beer or an ice cream cone may take a little more time and planning as our eateries have adopted new protocols. You’ll find new or expanded patio spaces and of course takeout is a great option for a meal on the go or enjoying a dinner on your own patio. Reservations are recommended as seating and seating times are limited to maintain physical distancing. What remains the same is the opportunity to get outside and stretch your legs on the multi-use Victoria Rail Trail, trying your hand at catching some fish, getting out on one of the many nearby lakes and rivers or grabbing a selfie by the falls or the restored Fenelon Theatre marquee sign. The last few months have been challenging for everyone and the Chamber of Commerce would like to acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice, and courage of our local business owners, health care workers, front line staff and community volunteers. We welcome you to reconnect with Fenelon Falls this summer or discover us for the first time. For current information on amenities, businesses and more visit www.explorefenelonfalls.com. Tips to
Help Your Dog Through the HEAT
Have lots of hydration available like water bowls with large floating ice – try filling and freezing an old plastic ice cream tub with water and throw in some of your dog’s favorite balls or toys to make it fun while it melts. Spraying your pooch with a fine mist of water or soaking a towel and rubbing down his fur will be a welcome reprieve on a hot day. Both humans and animals can benefit by putting their feet in water. The water doesn't need to be ice cold, and just a few inches of water is sufficient to place your pooch in. Pet him as he enjoys the cooling effect, and if you are hot as well, hop in while you're at it. Both of you will quickly cool down.

Save the School Horses – An Ontario Initiative Many businesses have suffered hardship over the past several months as we navigate this new normal of living with Covid-19 in a global attempt to protect each other. Riding school owners and operators are especially hard hit after the necessary mandated closing of all equestrian facilities and cancellation of lesson and camp programs. The school horses still need to be fed and cared for, and when you contemplate the cost of feeding just one school horse each month is $250.00 consider that most riding schools own over thirty horses, with riding lessons the sole source of income. The horse community has always been a tight group of fellow horse lovers, and no one wants to see other stables suffer, potentially close, or find the need to sell off their school horses because they cannot afford to feed them. Fortunately, our province has allowed riding schools to re-open but on a restricted scale, and many equestrian facilities continue to struggle financially as they shoulder the expenses of such facilities, as well as caring for their necessary lesson horses and keeping on essential barn staff. At Inukshuk Farm, we are fortunate enough to not rely on income from lessons, camps or other public related activities. But we are a part of this horse community and as such we care about those stables who are suffering. Ontario Equestrian, a long-time partner to Equine Guelph, is supporting its membership during this time of crisis and are fundraising for the ongoing care of these animals during the COVID- 19 pandemic. Ontario Equestrian has struck a Fund Distribution Committee that will receive applications for funds and disburse them as it is able with the disbursement based on principles including expenses directly related to the immediate needs of the school horses’ care. We are indeed “in this together and together we will get through it”. A big shout out to all the stables who donated hay, fostered horses and to the veterinarians and farriers who generously donated their services. But the crisis is not over! Flower Prints Making prints using nature is always something fun to do. Collecting all of "nature's paintbrushes" can add to the adventure and exploration of tracking down the perfect print-maker. This time we didn’t head to nature, though generally that would be my direction. We instead bought some flowers which were discounted at the grocery store, we noticed them while in line to pay. We picked flowers that had lots of ruffled layers, ones we thought would make an interesting print. At home we got out the paint and trays and clipped the flower stems shorter to provide little hands with easy-to-use stem handles. Dip the flower gently in the paint and press onto paper. The trick is to get a light layer of paint on the petals, otherwise you end up with a mushy blob that doesn’t resemble a flower. Lots of trial and error, but hours of fun! When you are done you can also gently rinse the flowers under cool water and place them in a vase for further enjoyment! Emily Ireland

Magic Butterfly Potion
By Jacob Rodenburg
Who has not been enchanted by the delicate, fluttering and colourful wind dancers known as butterflies? They are the hallmark of any warm summer’s day. Not only are butterflies easy to observe, but they turn up almost everywhere from suburban backyards to country roadsides and woodland trails. Butterfly visits, however, can be few and far between; but you can increase your chances of seeing butterflies by creating your very own magical potion. This recipe can attract such beauties as mourning cloaks, viceroys and swallowtail butterflies as well as a variety of moths. The concoction even works on a balcony. If you examine the ingredients you might think “hey, that’s a bit strange!” It turns out that some butterflies love fermented fruit, tree sap, mud and even mammal dung.
What to do: Mix sugar, bananas and a little water in a blender. Pour mixture and beer into jar. Top off with more water to make a half-gallon. Place lid on jar loosely (mixture will ferment). Place mixture in shallow dish outside or paint on trees, rocks, etc. You can even soak a sponge in this mixture and hang it from a tree branch. Check your bait sites (at night, too) to see what winged splendors are enjoying your magic potion!
Beware, for this recipe may also attract yellow jackets and other stinging insects. But with a bit of patience, you’ll be amazed by who visits your potent butterfly bait. Have a camera ready so you can take some pictures. Moths may visit the goop at night. Here’s what you’ll need: 1 cup of white sugar, 1 can of beer, 4-5 overripe bananas, water, half-gallon (2 liter) jar with lid
