Melissa Payne “You have to be in it for the love of it”

That’s the advice Ennismore singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Melissa Payne has for up-andcomers in the music industry, as she gets set to release her third album, “Darker Than Your Dark." She also says that one must be true to their craft, even if it doesn’t fit the cookie-cutter music industry. “People will try to put success into a brand. You have to conform to be mainstream, but if you’re not true to yourself you have sacrificed a large piece of your creativity.” Payne’s early influences range from Elvis and Ray Charles to George Jones and Dolly Parton. She admits it is difficult to pin down a genre to define her own music, saying it ranges from alt-country to pop to whatever the next inspiration may create. “As an artist I am constantly evolving, and while the songs for my first two albums – self-titled (2012), and “High and Dry” (2015) - were my own compositions, I am now open to collaborating. I worked in Nashville for awhile, and co-wrote with Greg Keelor (of Blue Rodeo fame, and who also produced the new album). I’m excited for the possibilities that open up by sharing the creative process with someone else,” Payne explains. That also includes working with respected Toronto/Montreal based songwriter, producer and performing artist Maia Davies. Payne also describes the early excitement of writing her first song, and says she wants to recapture that by expanding her musical horizons. “I wouldn’t say I’m jaded – I have respect for anyone involved in the music business – but I never want to lose the magic. I’ve learned and grown over the years, and yes, I’ve had dry spells. But I try to set aside time each day to write – it’s a job and I have to keep at my craft in order to continue to grow.” Following a month-long tour – 23 dates across Canada – with the Matt Mays Band, and while getting ready for a series of shows across Ontario to promote the new CD, Payne reflects on her chosen path. “First starting out, success is defined as singing in front of huge crowds, on the biggest stages. But the highlight of my career is simple: I make a living doing what I love to do. The mortgage and bills get paid each month. What can be better than that?” Payne also makes time to teach guitar, fiddle and vocals. “I especially love working with kids, watching them experience music,” she explains. The world-wide release of “Darker Than Your Dark” is set for March 7 and the album release takes place at Market Hall in Peterborough. The release party is open to the public, and tickets can be ordered through markethall.org. From Inside to Outside

Enjoying the Gifts of Winter It is a cold winter’s day. A delicate layer of frost edges the corner of each window and mounds of snow smooth over bushes and trees. Birds are huddled under eaves, fluffing their feathers, reminding you that winter is well and truly here. Meanwhile, the kids are hunched behind computer screens, or tapping their feet to the tunes emanating from their hand-held device. And you are thinking, “I’ve just got to figure out some way to get the kids outside!”

of at least three hours! This will give the snow crystals time to coalesce (bind). Ideally, leave the mound overnight.

From TV, computer games, Wii consoles and Xboxes, our society has created many enticing reasons for kids not to go outside. Children are easier to monitor when they stay indoors. They are ‘safer’ inside. And, in the age of multi-tasking we can ‘look after them’ while we are busy doing something else and we have the satisfaction of knowing that they are being entertained.

Next, begin hollowing out the mound. Make sure you have snow pants and an insulated jacket with a hood; this can be cold and wet work! Use your shovel and start scooping out snow. Have your children haul the snow away from the entrance. Keep digging until you come across the butt end of one of the sticks. The sticks serve as a guide so that you know the walls are of an even and consistent thickness.

If we give our children some winter experiences in nearby fields, forests and green spaces, we’ll help them to recognize, as John Muir once said, that if we, “tug at a single thing in nature, we’ll find it connected to the rest of the world.” So grab your hat, mitts, warm boots and winter jacket and don’t forget the kids! Experience the exhilaration of winter while the air is crisp, sharp and clear. Here’s an outdoor project to enjoy: Build a Snow Fort or Quinzee. When the snow is more than 20 centimetres deep, dig out the recycling containers and find several shovels. Fill up the recycling bins with snow and haul them over to a central location. Mound snow up as high as you can (a big pile about 2 metres high and 4 metres across would be ideal). Make sure your pile slopes gently. Use a shovel to smooth the sides into a symmetrical dome shape. Here is an important tip: You must leave the mound for a minimum

Since 1994

After the pile has settled, find a series of sticks 30 centimetres long and push them into the mound so that one end is at the surface and the other end is pressed deep into the mound. There should be a stick every metre or so, covering the entire surface of the Quinzee.

When the Quinzee is sufficiently hollowed out, use a larger stick or your fist (12 cm in diameter) to poke three or four holes through to the outside (one overhead, the rest along the sides). These holes will serve as ventilation, helping to bring fresh air inside. If I know my children are going to be playing in the Quinzee without supervision, I make an extra exit. If you are up for an adventure, insulate the bottom of the Quinzee with a tarp and sleeping pads. If you are well dressed and if there is enough insulation above and below you, you and your children can spend a cozy and unforgettable night in a snow fort of your own creation! DOGSLEDDING Daily tours provide a uniquely adventurous way to enjoy the great outdoors this winter season.

Haliburton Forest

Haliburton Forest is an unusual company. It is an outdoor lover’s paradise and a wood lover’s dream. It is a research facility and an education centre. Haliburton Forest is 100,000 acres, 100 lakes, and millions of trees, and it is home to countless creatures. Above all, and always, it is a sustainably managed forest.

Today, Haliburton Forest is an integrated and diversified company which can be summarized with two simple statements. First, it is a sustainable multi-use private land stewardship company. Second, it is one company with two divisions and seven businesses. We provide year-round employment to 60 people and work closely on a regular basis with 30 independent contractors. Our business strategy is to be environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, and economically viable in everything we do, in order that Haliburton Forest may grow and improve over the very long term. The first division of Haliburton Forest is the Tourism & Recreation division. This is the part of the business that most people know best and it tends to be the “face” of Haliburton Forest. The Tourism & Recreation division includes two businesses. The Ecotourism business includes dogsledding, snowmobiling, Canopy Tours, the Wolf Centre, Group Experiences, camping, accommodations, and many day uses. Our Ecotourism business is consistently recognized as one of the premiere destinations in Canada for wilderness

adventures, and has been kindly described as “remarkable, “quirky and charming,” and “breath taking.” The Leases & Land Use business services more than 1,000 lessees, who make use of 30 hunt clubs and an enormous variety of campsites. Many of these lessees have been regularly visiting Haliburton Forest for decades – one of the hunt clubs actually pre-dates Canadian Confederation. We work closely with these long-term stakeholders throughout the year. Our mission with the Tourism & Recreation division is to share our property with other people and earn our “social license” every day – in this manner, we try to set an example for large private landowners around the world. The second division of Haliburton Forest is the Forest Products division. This is the part of the business that is responsible for our reputation as a sustainable company. The Forest Products division includes five businesses: The Forest Management business includes silvicultural strategy,

logging operations, infrastructure development, and scientific research. It is thanks to the efforts of the Forest Management crew that Haliburton Forest is one of the most researched natural forests in the world. The Commercial Forest Products business operates a mid-sized hardwood sawmill that produces lumber and residues, and our signature Eco-Log Homes. This business was created to fulfill our ethical and economic obligation to add value to the wood that we harvest from our forest. The Retail Forest Products business, which produces handmade canoeing paddles and offers custom woodworking, is the heart of our value-added manufacturing operations. Our focus with this business is creating beautiful wood products at competitive prices. Haliburton Forest Biochar and Wood Heat & Power, which are emerging businesses in the start-up phase, both focus on using wood to create high quality products that competitively displace fossil fuel products in the manufacturing and energy sectors.

ECO-LOG EcoLog Homes provides custom hemlock log home kits with timber harvested from Haliburton Forest - Canada's first FSC certified, sustainable forest.

Our mission in the Forest Products business is to improve our forest over the long term by protecting the ecological integrity of our property while producing valuable wood products in a sustainable manner at competitive prices. Haliburton Forest is a unique company responsible for the sustainable management of a remarkable piece of land. Over the next 100 years, our owners and management team will continue to embrace each challenge as an opportunity to improve, with an ongoing focus on enhancing and improving each aspect of the operation. We will work with our clients, stakeholders and partners to continue earning an excellent reputation within both the Tourism & Recreation and Forest Products divisions. Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers

Racing for the Entire Family The screaming roar and sweet smell of snowmobiles battling on an oval ice track may be coming to a community near you this winter. The Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers have six stops on their schedule for 2020 and one may be close to you. These are most of the same vintage snowmobiles that raced 40 years ago, but do not be fooled, these sleds rock!

The Canadian Vintage Championships are held on February 14 to 16 in Eganville to celebrate the coveted Bonnechere Cup! Racers come from all over the United States and Canada to compete with sleds capable of over 160 KPH. Two weeks later OSOR is at the Pinestone Resort in Haliburton. This is a wonderful resort where you can enjoy the races from the comfort of your room. Then grab your thermals because the final race of the season is held in Northern Ontario - the weekend of March 14th sees the action returns to Cochrane for the Polar Bear Cup. There are racers as young as four and as old as sixty- four, and race sleds that go back to the sixties and seventies. If you want to do something different, OSOR has something for your entire family. Children under 5 are free and everyone else is $10. So, wherever you are in Ontario, the action will not be far away! Visit www.osorlife.ca or our Facebook page, Ontario Snowmobile Oval Racers, for updates. Photo Credit Bill Murphy. Pictured below Dave Nesbitt (aka Nezy)

Their first stop is at Viamede Resort on Stoney Lake right in the middle of the Kawarthas, on the weekend of January 25th. Watch the race from inside this beautiful resort established in 1885 or venture out to be up close and personal with the action. The following weekend the race teams meet up at the Bayview Wildwoods Resort for the Sparrow Lake Cup Championships. Come and enjoy the delicious food, the sights and the hospitality that is waiting for you. The very next weekend the excitement continues in Picton at the Isaiah Tubbs Resort and Conference Centre. Enjoy all that Prince Edward County has to offer.

Creating Winter Curb Appeal – Frightful Weather, Delightful Views! It’s post-Christmas and we are well into the new year. We’ve also entered the thick of winter. We take refuge in our chunky knits, our long underwear, our trendy toques and layers of scarves, mitts and socks. The tree is tucked away, the Christmas lights are down and perhaps we feel hopeful for an early spring - even if it does feel like the distant future! During this span of time, where the lustre of Christmas décor has long worn off, how can we spruce up our home exteriors for some added curb appeal to get us through the drab winter months? When everything is blanketed with snow and skies are grey, having a warm and welcoming exterior can keep spirits bright. Making an Entrance You may still have greenery in your urns and window boxes that you can edit of Christmas influence, and instead add fresh sprigs of

pine and spruce to keep things looking full and green. These often take a beating during the high winds of winter and driving snow. Now is the time to create fullness and newness by giving them some added attention. Or consider adding faux topiaries and boxwood balls to take you across that winter finish line. Faux greenery is an ideal way to add colour with a low maintenance approach. There are many online websites that sell such ornamentation, and home décor shops often carry similar items. These are also available made with bark and wood for a more natural effect. A bright coloured door is also an appealing contrast during the winter months. Another way to add colour and interest is with bird houses and ornamental feeders; these distract from the grey landscape of winter and provide a functional refuge for nature’s winged visitors.

A Picture-Perfect Porch This seasonal stretch provides an opportunity to consider turning over your porch décor. This could include outdoor cushions, throw blankets, lanterns with flameless candles and other garden accessories that help to create a neutral look. Consider switching up your doormat for something new that will reflect the personality of your home and family. Many online websites sell statement welcome mats which can set the tone before guests even make an entrance. Having a theme in mind will help, and can be tied into your interior look and colour schemes.

Light It Up Clear the path to your doorway and ensure your front door has ample lighting for a warm and welcoming entrance. Add warm, white lighting to key zones to give off warmth during the winter hours and boost night-time curb appeal. A driveway and walkway lighting plan can add interest and creativity to your home by illuminating the shape of your landscaping. Remember - impressive curb appeal begins at the street and delivers a continued experience all the way to your front door. Lighting also makes your home appear larger from the outside, making it attractive and increasing its value at the same time. Also, keep exterior lights clean, as they tend to collect dirt during the winter months.

Have a Snow Removal Strategy When removing snow consider specific areas to shovel to avoid unsightly mounds which, once frozen, create hard-to-navigate walkways. Be consistent with snow removal and have salt on hand to ensure safety and cleared areas. Properly cleared pathways and removal of icicles from your eavestroughs can create appealing lines and angles which will complement the shape of your home and overall design. Also try to keep shovels out of sight - they only add to potential front entrance clutter. Yard Once-over Remove sticks and branches that have fallen during storms. Also, this is where your snow removal strategy comes in handy to keep traffic off a winter lawn. Grass underneath can be easily damaged during winter months and keeping lawn traffic minimal will ensure successful spring growth. Directing traffic to designated pathways will assist with successful maintenance. The good news is, your winter yard to-do list will be shorter! In the spring or fall when pruning, consider trimming to frame and accent your home so that you optimize the design and lines of its architecture. Don’t let winter chill your curb appeal. Put the same amount of time and care into your curb aesthetic regardless of the season and you’ll be the envy of your neighbours! And don’t forget to find beauty in the season itself, after all the Kawarthas are one of most beautiful regions in Ontario all year round. By: Joanne Clark

Indoor Air Quality for a Healthier Home Currently the attention of many is turned to the quality of our earth’s air and what we can do to help it. Air quality is important to remember inside, too! We often forget about Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) within our homes, and there are many causes that can affect your family’s health. Airborne dust, dander and pollen can trigger asthmatic and allergic reactions. High humidity in the home can cause mold spores and bacteria growth, as well as excessive moisture which collects around windows offering a perfect place for mold and bacteria to grow. Toxic fumes from cleaning products, carbon monoxide, volatile chemicals from furniture, paint etc. can all contribute to health issues, too. The following are a few ways to help improve IAQ in your home. Exchanging indoor air with fresh outdoor air will help make toxic fumes, volatile chemicals and carbon monoxide less concentrated, and yearly maintenance is the answer. Maintenance will ensure heating and air conditioning equipment is running efficiently and cleanly, helping reduce any combustion gas produced. Changing air filters on your heating/cooling equipment every three months will help capture airborne particles and keep air circulation strong. We should all install carbon monoxide detectors to alert you to any elevated carbon monoxide levels. Installing a ventilation system instantly provides several benefits; it is an energy efficient means to exhaust indoor pollutants, maintain a continuous supply of fresh, filtered, tempered air into your home, control excess indoor humidity, recover heat from exhaust air in winter, and also cools incoming air in summer if your home is air conditioned. What's with the February

Groundhog? Every 2nd of February, various North American media outlets cover “Groundhog Day” in their communities. Ceremonies usually consist of costumed dignitaries holding aloft befuddled large rodents and declaring that winter will end either soon or not so soon, depending on whether their groundhogs have seen their shadows. The decision among the groundhogs is seldom unanimous.

What are the origins of this rather odd annual ritual? The second day of February is the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It was celebrated by the pagan Celts with the festival of Imbolc to mark the start of spring, but as Christianity spread throughout Europe Imbolc evolved into the feast of Candlemas. In some regions, it was believed that a sunny Candlemas indicated 40 more days of winter. Germans accepted the day as sunny only if certain animals – badgers, marmots, bears, foxes – left their dens and saw their shadows. German immigrants to Pennsylvania in the 1700s and 1800s brought this tradition with them, adopting the groundhog (the European marmot’s North American cousin) as their winter prognosticator. The first official “Groundhog Day” was held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in 1887; “Punxsutawney Phil” is now a major tourism draw for the town. Several American communities now have their own groundhog personalities – either real rodents, puppets, or people dressed as groundhogs. Canada has two prominent groundhogs: “Wiarton Willie” is an

Since 1994

albino based in Wiarton, Ontario, while “Shubenacadie Sam” is a brown groundhog from Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. Groundhogs, however, were not the animal of first choice for Canadians: the bear was, until the early 1900s when it was replaced with the “American” groundhog. Perhaps it had something to do with a hibernating groundhog being easier – and safer – to drag out of its winter home than a bear! Whether you believe that the length of winter depends on a meteorologist’s prediction or that of a sleepy rodent is your choice. My family’s tradition is that if the groundhog sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter, but if he does not there will be only a month and a half. Happy Groundhog Day. EASY WAYS TO

Refresh Your Kitchen In this issue I will suggest a few easy ways to give your kitchen a facelift without it costing a bundle, and offer up some ideas so that you can do it yourself. Let’s face it; the kitchen is the main congregating area in most homes, so it deserves to look good and be functional for you. There are several ways to update your kitchen without the need for a full replacement and the cost that goes with it.

and with such a variety of materials, colors and profiles, you will find exactly what you want, and it will make a huge difference to your kitchen. Even new lighting changes a room, and it is easy to do.

New door and drawer pulls can make a drastic change, and it’s relatively easy for the homeowner to complete. Different handles can have different hole patterns so either match to the existing pattern or simply drill new holes - carefully and precisely, of course. Painting the doors, drawers and/or the bodies of cabinets will always change the whole feel of the room. If you are going to paint, make sure to use a high-quality primer and paint. Your paint supplier can suggest the best products and applicators for the job.

A favourite of mine is to add a tile backsplash. Tile selection is so extensive, and whether you use a brick pattern, stacked or even herringbone, with a few basic tools in hand you will be able to do it yourself. Tile saws and grinders are available for rent if you don’t have, or want to buy them.

If painting is not an option for you, there are many suppliers that can set you up with all-new doors and drawer fronts to fit what you have. They can be ordered unfinished or finished to match your style. Adding a pantry cabinet is always a great idea if you have the space, too. Solid surface counter tops have quickly become the standard

Since 1994

Last one, also a favourite, a new faucet! This is one of the easiest ways to spruce up your kitchen and with such a variety of style to choose from, I’m sure that you will find one to suit your needs and your price range. I hope that some of these ideas inspire you during your kitchen facelift, and please contact me with any questions or concerns. Building Business - Building Community

Peterborough Chamber

A Year of Growth for Fenelon Falls

130 years ago, on March 21, 1889, 33 businessmen signed the paper to form the Board of Trade of the Town of Peterborough, under the federal Boards of Trade Act. While some of the language is archaic,

Fenelon Falls is open for business year round and excited to offer a variety of opportunities for business owners, residents and visitors alike. Tempt your palate at one of our many restaurants, including three new locations that opened this fall; On The Locks for all day breakfast, lunch overlooking the falls at The Locker, and end the day with a local craft beer at Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. For the sweet tooth, two local bakeries; Kawartha Shortbread and Dolce expanded and moved to new locations with space for cafe dining.

"It is no disparagement to say that in grasp of idea and debating power the Board of that day was the finest we have. One real good resulted and it is possible that herewith lies a real and one of the best functions of such a body, that such propositions as came to the town for the establishments of industries would be sifted and analyzed and the bona fides pretty well determined before action was taken. In many cases the attitude of the Board was, wisely, to stand between the irresponsible promoter and a too impulsive Council anxious to push the town ahead, to gather in industries and willing to trust to the future and see that things worked out right." 130 years later it seems we are still in the business of strengthening the community by making sure that things work out right. The Peterborough economy has certainly evolved, from sawmills and settlement, to smokestacks and manufacturing, to today, where the main pillars of the local economy include agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, the public sector, and a burgeoning entrepreneurial sector – young people who are creating things, making things, disrupting, and generally doing what business people have done forever, trying to compete. The future looks bright, as Peterborough maps out a strategy designed to capitalize on our existing and emerging strengths. Local brick & mortar retailers like The Kawartha Store, Butterfly Boutique and Country Cupboard are growing their business with the launch of their online shopping sites. The option to shop any time of the day, from anywhere is wonderful for locals or seasonal visitors looking to purchase products they love from our local retailers. If you’re looking for a social connection or the opportunity to learn new skills many local shops offer evening events for quilters, knitters, crafters and more. Evening classes and pop up shops also provide space for home-based businesses to expand their reach and draw customers to local retailers. Business owners also collaborate with event organizers to create unique, experiential events that draw visitors from the local region, across the GTA and beyond making Fenelon Falls a destination community throughout the year! Opportunity also abounds for skilled tradespeople looking to work in the manufacturing, agriculture or construction industries here in Fenelon Falls and the Kawartha Lakes. PRESBYOPIA: What Is It? Have you started noticing that your arms are getting shorter? Having more difficulty reading the back of the pill bottle? Finding that you are increasing the font size on your phone? It all has to do with presbyopia. What is presbyopia? It is the process of losing the elasticity in the lens of your eyes; this usually starts to take effect in middle or old age. There are eye exercises available, but they will only delay the process of presbyopia. The simplest way to improve your vision is to wear glasses. You may be asking yourself, “what is the best solution for glasses for me?” To correct presbyopia, you can get either simple reading glasses, a bi-focal (2 distinct areas on a lens to allow 2 different focal points, distance and near) or a tri-focal (3 distinct areas on a lens to allow 3 different focal points, distance, mid-range (usually about arm’s length) and near). Both bi-focal and tri-focal lenses have visible lines on them allowing everyone to know that you are wearing such lenses. If you want to hide the fact you are wearing these lenses, consider the invisible bi-focal, where you do not see the line on the lens. The PAL (progressive additional lens) is a great replacement for a lined tri-focal. PAL is a lens which graduates down from your distance correction to the full reading prescription that your local optometrist would provide for you. There are many PAL design lenses out there, made by many different companies. If you have any questions on which one might be best for you, please visit your local optician, or come on in and find out. Tim Mak, Licenced Optician. weight gain, decreased motivation, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, snoring, lack of sleep, acne, eczema, hives, brain fog, fatigue, headaches, congestion, muscle and joint aches.

What is a Keto Diet? A Keto diet is a diet that helps to optimize your body’s ability to burn its own fat stores.

Not consuming enough vegetables . Vegetables are full of potassium and minerals that the body needs to function optimally and this also helps to prevent the Keto Flu.

Healthy Benefits of a keto Diet ✔ Decreased belly fat, cravings, hunger ✔ Increased energy ✔ Improvement in cognitive function, memory, concentration, focus, mood, more stable blood sugars, decreasing blood pressure and achieving the body and health you really want. What is the importance of Eliminating Food Intolerances? When your food intolerances/allergens are identified and removed from your diet this benefits your weight loss and your overall health. Food intolerances have been linked to the following health concerns:

Since 1994

Common mistakes made when doing Keto Diet Not measuring and recording your food It can make success very challenging. Our version makes this measuring system simple for everyone to achieve. If you’re not keeping track of what you are eating, it can be hard to make sure you’re consuming the right portions of fat, protein and carbs that will allow your body to burn its own fat stores. Not replenishing enough water or electrolytes. The keto diet is diuretic in nature and therefore you will use the washroom a lot more, decreasing your water and electrolytes.

Consuming too much protein. Too much protein will be converted in the liver to glycogen and this sugar will kick you out of ketosis. Consuming too many unhealthy fats. This will set you up for other health problems down the road. Snacking. Snacking stimulates insulin which triggers fat storage and halts your body’s fat burning for a period of time. If you are interested in more information about the Thin and Healthy weight loss program or our Keto version you can come out to our next lecture on Wednesday January 15th at 5 pm. Winter Renovations to Warm Up Your Home Lifestyle Home Products

Many Ontarians have cold feet when it comes to winter renovations. However, that trend is changing. Aside from price savings, less lead time is required January to March to order most renovation products. “Home and cottage renovations can provide better overall value in the winter months,” says Keith Carroll, co-owner of Lifestyle Home Products. “High quality products and efficient installation processes can make winter installation work really well.” Replacing a Front Door Cold weather installation of a new door's fit can be done as easily in cold weather conditions as in warmer months. Wooden doors can have big heat loss and fit issues in the winter. Once a new metal or fiberglass door is in place, insulation improves, saving on winter heating bills. Replacing a Window Leaky windows and exterior doors can lose 20-30% of a home’s heat. That’s why it’s good to note that windows can still be replaced when temperatures hover below freezing says Keith. When all openings are carefully pre-measured, the corresponding energy-efficient vinyl windows can be secured in place with quick precision.

Heat loss is not an issue with Lifestyle’s four-season, energy-efficient glass package.

Replacing a Bath Tub “Lifestyle Home Products developed its One-Day Bath renovation system to work with winters in mind,” says Keith. “In these cold months, homeowners really appreciate a complete bath renovation in one day.” Using this process, the old tub can be removed, as well as its old walls with any old tiles or surface coverings. Installation of a new tub or alternate walk-in shower then starts fresh and dry from the floor and stud walls. Lifestyle manufactures lifetime sunrooms, windows and doors at 944 Crawford Drive in Peterborough. Lifestyle installs everything it makes. Lifestyle is also the Ontario supplier of lifetime One-Day Baths and lifetime roofing shingles. Visit LifestyleHomeProducts.ca for more information.

Planning Your Wedding Getting married may be one of the most exciting and important days of your life. The wedding day itself will be remembered for years to come – and we have some ideas to help you plan the perfect day! Venue When picking the right venue for the event you first need a good idea of how many people will be attending. Once you have decided on a larger crowd or a smaller, more intimate affair, then the search for the perfect locale can begin. You will need to know if the venue is simply offering the space and if you are expected to organize your own caterers, chairs, linens, etc. Once you know these details you can start to think about things like a colour scheme; pick something that suits the surroundings of the venue you have chosen – it will make your decorating much easier. Visit the venue and explore, look at locations suitable for wedding photos, bearing in mind the time of day the photos will be taken. If some of your guests are from out of town, do the research to find out if there is suitable accommodation for them at the venue, or nearby.

Dressing the Bridal Party Naturally you will want to choose a wedding dress that makes you feel like the bride you have dreamed of being, and don’t forget about comfort along with style. Keep in mind the venue, and colours of the venue when dressing the bridal party. Proper fit is important so be sure to trust someone well qualified with your alterations. IF you are looking to shed pounds before the wedding, there are any great programs available. Set yourself up for success by starting early and sticking to a plan. Food and Catering Once you know what your venue offers as far as facilities, you can begin planning the food you will serve your guests. Some questions to consider are: What style of service do you want (buffet, family style or served)? Do

you need us to provide dessert? Late night snack food? Are you planning a meal – or perhaps just pass hors d'oeuvres. Caterers have access to fresh ingredients and often come prepared with all the equipment and staff they need, taking the headache of rentals out of your day. Another option is choosing a personal Chef to handle your catering needs for you. This allows you to have a skilled Chef create a menu based on your desires and give advice on your catering needs. Flowers Choosing flowers does depend on personal taste, but consider what is in season at the time of your wedding. Many florals can be sourced locally if in season, and are easier on the pocketbook if they are not special order. It is helpful to have an experienced florist help you make this decision. Don’t forget the throwaway bouquet if you are planning on a bouquet toss, and a garter for the garter toss as well! Professional Planning It might be less stressful to hire a professional planner to organize your day for you. If you choose someone with years of experience they will think of every potential hiccup that could take place and help avoid those pitfalls. A wedding planner can help with every aspect of the event, from invitations, to advising on colour schemes, co-ordinating rehearsals, advice on which cake to choose and which style and decor you are going to go with. It is also invaluable to have someone to deal with ‘the day-of’ last-minute details so you as the bride can relax, knowing that everything is looked after. How to Hire the Perfect Wedding Celebrant Celebrants come with set ceremonies or ideas to create one that is unique. It is lovely when you can add segments that reflect your values and joy. Some parts of the service are required to make it legal and you must use a legally registered celebrant with the Province of Ontario. You want professionalism and you want friendliness. Check what is covered in the price of the celebrant. Do they meet up with you beforehand? Are they available for questions? Are they happy to conduct an outside ceremony? How much time is available on the wedding day? By: Hermione Rivision, www.hermionerivison.ca 705 742 0367 or 705 750 8429 Limos & Cars Do you need transportation? Hiring a service to look after getting everyone from point A to point B is important. Read reviews - you want to be there on time. You should have a handle on numbers in advance – do you need to transport just the wedding party, or are you looking for a guest shuttle service, too? You can rent various sizes of vehicle, anything from a 6-seater sedan, formal limo or classic car, all the way up to a coach limo bus or school bus, depending on what your guests and your needs are.

Disc Jockey Services Choosing the right DJ is important – it really sets the tone for the event. Pick someone who will play music that suits you as a couple. Ask if the DJ is willing to work with you – allowing you to add your own songs, and assisting with lighting and audio. Remember to ask if they are willing to cover your ceremony as well as your reception if you need them for both; this is also a great way to make use of AV equipment if you are having an outdoor ceremony with no access to equipment of your own. Photography This is such an important part of the day! These are the moments you will be reflecting on for the rest of your life; you definitely want the photos to capture and reflect the feelings you had on your special day and you need someone who will take the time to listen to your wishes. Pick someone by researching their portfolios, with so many different styles you want someone who is willing to take the photos you want. Always take the time to meet the photographer beforehand and plan photos by showing samples of shots you have seen and like.

Lash Extensions for Your Big Day Lash extensions can make everyday life a little less hectic and enhance any bridal look. Extensions have the ability to make your eyes look bigger and brighter, so it’s easy to understand why they are a popular pre-wedding beauty application. Clients have the option of lash lengths, fullness, curl and style. Extensions should be applied 2-3 days before an event. Choosing the right lash artist is key - so ensure they are professionally trained! Anything having to do with your eyes requires knowledge, and the highest quality of care. Improper application can cause damage to your

natural lashes as well as creating other eye complications. Lashes must be kept dry for 24 hours after application, avoiding heat and steam, as the adhesive needs this time to cure effectively. This allows the extensions to stay in place as they should. Oil based products should be avoided around the lash area for the duration you are wearing them, as this too can weaken the bond. It is critical to follow the aftercare advice to ensure you are getting the most out of your investment. Your lash professional should ensure you understand all aspects of the aftercare process before the application begins. Not only will proper aftercare allow your extensions to last longer but it will keep your natural lashes strong and healthy – skipping aftercare can lead to damage to your natural lashes and eye complications, too. Have You Considered the Wine? We all think of wine on tables when we think about sitting down at a wedding dinner. But have you thought about crafting your own? This detail can go a long way in making your wine selection a one-of-a-kind, personal touch on your tables and at your bar on the big day. Since 1997, The Wine Shoppe on Park has been proudly serving Peterborough and area with expert winemaking services, highest-quality grape juices and top-of-the-line equipment. The craft winemaking process is so simple! With the help of the amazing staff at the Wine Shoppe you begin by selecting your wine from a list of 200+ selections; sprinkle the yeast to start the fermentation, and then leave it with their expertly-trained staff,

who take it through its fermentation processes. When you return in 4-8 weeks to bottle your wine, they have great user-friendly bottling stations and offer guidance from their knowledgeable and friendly staff. Don’t forget; your wine will then need to age. Different sections (red or white) will need varying times, so order early as some wines need 2-3 months to mature. The Wine Shoppe also offers a great equation to help you figure out how much wine you will need to order based on your crowd, and they offer affordable packages when ordering for an event. The staff at the Wine Shoppe know how much time and planning goes into preparing for a wedding. There’s nothing “Small” about Love Over the years, the staff at Burleigh Falls Inn has had the privilege of assisting with one of the most romantic days in a couple’s life; their wedding. These events are often filled with much pomp & circumstance, everything on a larger than life scale, and it can all get a little overwhelming. More intimate celebrations are becoming a popular choice, smaller gatherings with a true focus on what is most important; the love shared between two individuals. In today’s world there seems to be a real need to slow things down, scale things back, and really focus on the importance of the celebration. Many couples gather the most important people in their lives, those who are committed in supporting their love, and whose support they can really count on during their new journey as husband and wife. Smaller celebrations allow for more flexibility and tend be a truer reflection of the couple themselves. Imagine being able to include all of your guests in every aspect of your celebration. Think: a personal photo session with each guest, hand-picked menus reflecting personal taste, and perhaps spending not just one day but an entire weekend surrounded with those you love most. Burleigh Falls Inn has been honoured to host celebrations that included weekends full of personal touches, like group outings, family style dinners, campfire gatherings, pajama parties, card games, and family photos; and - somewhere in there - a touching ceremony. There is no “rule” book when planning your wedding, and often couples seem to forget this. It’s your day, your union, and it’s your love. Surround yourself with those who support this in every way, those who have guided you and will continue to do so - whether that be 4 or 400. Most importantly, always remember there is nothing “small” about love. For more information on planning your intimate celebration please visit www.burleighfallsinn.com

Choose a Photographer You ‘Click’ With One of the most important team members you will hire for your wedding day is your photographer. This person will not only be spending quite a few hours acting as your shadow; but you have to trust that they are capturing all of the moments and memories of your special day; and that means that you need to find a photographer that fits with you and your fiancé. It can be very confusing when you first begin looking at photographers. It is easy to get lost in all the labels that are applied to the different styles of photography; traditional, modern, documentary, posed; light and airy, dark and moody or somewhere in between? My best advice is to do some research. Google local photographers and then spend time going through their websites. Which photos are the way you envision your photos to look? Always keep in mind that your photos will be slightly different; after all it is your day done your way; but overall the feel and style will be the same. The other major component is personality. Do you and your potential photographer click? Do you feel comfortable with them? Are they easy to talk to? Are they aligned with your personality and vision for the day? This person will be with you step by step through your entire day and you need to feel like you can not only trust them, but be friends with them. The last part of the equation is budget. The photographer of your dreams may be outside of your budget, but there is nothing wrong with being open and honest with them and asking them if they can work with you; or perhaps they can recommend someone who they feel would fit your requirements. Spending the time to research and choose a photographer that clicks will ensure that all your moments are captured and that you are able to relax and enjoy your special day. You can Always Trust Flowers to make the Best Moments in Life Even Better That’s according to Angela Chandler, owner of Sweet Bee Floral, and designer extraordinaire. She knows a thing or two about flowers, bringing her years of experience to your special occasion; from centerpieces to full-service floral design, her unique designs create the perfect atmosphere your special day deserves. The current trend in wedding florals is ecoconsciousness, making use of seasonal flowers and locally foraged products from local and Ontario growers. Brides and grooms are requesting colour palettes, rather than specific blooms, which means the wedding florals can be created and sourced entirely from in-season blooms from local growers. “I am very blessed to live in the Kawarthas and have access to the most amazing local flower growers such as Louise, owner of Wild Imagination Co, and Unicorn Blooms,” Angela says. Another trend sees many couples choosing to give away their blooms after so that they can be “up cycled” and enjoyed in places like seniors homes. If you are looking to mix things up a bit, Angela suggests using dried blooms and foliage either mixed with fresh flowers or on their own - to create interesting texture and unusual combinations. Think pampas grass, sun palm, bleached and dyed ruscus, lunaria and straw

Since 1994

flowers, to name a few. These easy-to-carefor options eliminate the worry about wilting, water or weather. In terms of floral and greens installations, a new favourite is large floral pieces which create an impact – greenery and floral walls; flowers and greens hanging, or trailing from the ceilings; arbours or arches dripping in blooms. These are often created in a wild, undone-garden style of design, such as one would find in nature. Sweet Bee Floral’s full service includes: • Wedding & event floral design • Photo styling & staging (Partnering with photographers, providing flowers for photo shoots) • Corporate styling • Pop-up events with their gorgeous vintage trucks • Rentals (vessels, harvest tables) • Full event set-up Sweet Bee provides wedding and event delivery to Peterborough and the Kawarthas, the GTA, Haliburton and Muskoka areas and beyond! For daily flower deliveries, they deliver to Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes region. Contact them at hello@sweetbeefloral. ca for rates and quotes. "AMY" FROM HEARTLAND

Amber Marshall CHATS WITH KAYLA at The Royal Winter Fair

"Meeting with Amber was an amazing experience - especially finding out she wasn't just a "Horse Trainer Actress" - she actually is a Country Girl with many animals of her own." Kayla

The most important piece of advice you’ve ever received was… Learn from your mistakes. Everyone makes them; the important part is learning how to be better from those experiences. Stay positive, and if you want something, work hard to achieve it. Where did you grow up… I grew up with my mom, dad and little brother in a home in London, Ontario. I wasn’t able to live in the country until after I had moved out, but that didn’t stop me from spending all my free time at

a stable outside of town. I first began taking riding lessons there when I was 10 years old, and a few years later was able to obtain my own horse which I boarded there. When did you start acting… When I was 8 years old, I joined a local theatre group for children called “The Original Kids Theatre Company.” I had so much fun

Kids Corner performing there. It wasn’t too long after joining that I was recommended to an agency for Film and Television. At the age of 12 I booked my first TV role! Who taught you how to ride? When I was 4 years old my parents took me out to a local farm where they would lead me around on a little pony named Tony. My mom rode horses growing up, so she was able to teach me all the basics. At the age of 10 I started formal English lessons at Shadowlane Stables just outside of London, ON. Do you have horses of your own? My husband and I have a ranch just outside of Calgary, Alberta where we live with our many animals. They can be seen on my website “www.AmberMarshall.com” Currently we have 6 horses. My newest friend is a Palomino Quarter Horse named Cruz. He came to live with us during the summer. I also have a Black Quarter Horse named Hawk who my mom formed a bond with many years ago and he has become mostly her horse. My husband has a talented red roan Quarter Horse named Nitro. We also have a Bay Quarter Horse named Cinch whom our good friend/neighbour has taken a liking to. Cinch mostly lives with him and they compete together in Team Roping. Two Miniature horses named Screech and Talon also live with us. They are a funny pair and I always enjoy watching them boss around the bigger horses in the fields. I got my first Horse a year ago when I was 8 years old, he is a Welsh Pony named Andy. How old were you when you got your first horse, what was the breed and its name? My first horse was a chestnut Quarter Horse named Monty. I bought him at an auction sale when I was 12 years old. I mostly rode English then and we both learned how to jump together (not always the best plan!!)

Which is your favourite horse on the show? Stormy plays the role of Spartan on Heartland. He has been with the show as long as I have (all 13 years) so him and I have a special connection. He is now 19 years old and starting to develop arthritis. We have written the story to reflect his restrictions and at the end of Season 13 Amy recognises that even though Spartan will still be around for a long time, she cannot compete on him any longer or put as much pressure on him. I love your Cowgirl hats - where do you get them? How many do you have? I get my hats all over the place. I have 5 now!! Do you do all your stunts? As much as I would love to do many of the stunts, the insurance companies that supply the show do not allow it. I do as much of the riding as they will permit, but jumping at a certain height, taking a fall, or riding really fast through a grassy field usually has to be done by a professional stunt performer. Can fans come visit Heartland? Unfortunately no, the ranch is owned by a private family and not open to the public. You can however go visit the town of High River which is used as “Hudson” on the show. You will see lots of familiar shops and diners including “Maggies!” Who would you like to meet… I have seen a few dogs in youtube videos and they seem like they have the coolest personalities. I would enjoy meeting them!!

Have you sang on stage and do you have a CD? I do enjoy singing, but not when it becomes a job. My favourite type of singing is just jamming with friends. I have recorded a few songs that we sang on Heartland, but I don’t have any plans to put out a CD at this time. I have sung on stage when I was young (through my theatre company) but not in a band.

Puppies!

So little time, so much for them to learn! Who can resist a fuzzy wobbly cuddly puppy? I know I can't! Here are some important thoughts to consider when you bring your new family member home: A puppy's fear imprint stage is from 8 to 16 weeks roughly. That means, this time frame is when a puppy determines what is safe or unsafe in our human world. It's really important to have your puppy experience our human world as much as possible. But a puppy parent needs to be smart about HOW they socialize their new furry family member. Taking them to the local dog park where some dogs may not enjoy the company of a puppy and therefore overwhelm the youngster, not such a good idea. Also, some dogs attending the park may

not be fully vaccinated which will put your young puppy at risk for contraction of some serious viruses, namely Parvo virus. Puppies are not fully vaccinated until after 16 weeks of age which means that keeping it confined at home while waiting to be vaccinated will leave your puppy undersocialized for when they mature. Keep in mind that obedience skills can be taught to a dog of any age. When your puppy is still in its fear imprint stage, that's the best window of opportunity you have to build the young puppy's confidence and help them grow into a confident and well balanced adult dog. Here's what we recommend you focus on in the early days of bringing your puppy home. 1) Socialization - be smart about it. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviourists encourage all puppy owners to social their puppies during its fear imprint. Please visit their website to see their position statement on the importance of early socialization and the risks associated with not socializing them during that all-important stage of development. www.avsab.org Puppy classes that focus on early socialization while maintaining a safe environment are ideal for your puppy's education.

Explore Cottage Country

2) House training - get your puppy on to a strict regimen right out the gate. If you are really diligent about keeping your puppy on a half hour rotation, most puppies will be house broken within 2 weeks. It's worth the effort in the beginning! 3) Bite inhibition - this is the education or process of teaching your puppy to lessen their pressure when putting their mouths on us. While the puppies are still young, they have these nasty prickly milk teeth that really hurt. They are there for a reason. When your puppy is interacting with you or other dogs, if he bites too hard, the other dog (as should you) will stop playing with the puppy to let them know that they have been too rough. As the puppy ages though, after the 16 week mark, no longer allow the puppy to put their mouths on you. Shun them quickly. Meaning, if they mouth you, quickly get up and leave the room. Don't negiotiate with them. Let them know they hurt you. This way they will learn what hurts you and what doesn't and then progress to learning not to mouth you at all. 4) It's Yer Choice Games - these are impulse control games that begin with easy steps for your puppy to understand about "Leave It" and minding their manners when around food. 5) Toy motivation - teach your puppy to learn to LOVE to play with YOU with toys. Its a great way to bond with your puppy while instilling an alternate reward system apart from food. Playing tug gently with your puppy is also a great way to teach bite inhibition. If the puppy "accidentally" bites you when playing, then throw the toy to the floor and leave the room quickly and abruptly. The puppy will quickly learn that not touching you with its teeth will keep the game going longer. Also, playing gentle games of tug teaches the puppy to give up toys happily and easily to you. Now you have a puppy that isn't worried about obsessing and keeping the toy to themselves. This helps to reduce resource guarding and teaches your puppy to give up all things happily, like the dish towel or the remote control...again. 6) Prevention of Resource Guarding - as your puppy is eating from its food bowl, add some yummy tasty morsels to its meal. You want your puppy to learn to relax when people approach its food bowl. For more information and other resources, please visit our website at: www.paus-n-train.com/LearningLibrary

Snow Paint Sparkles; that one word causes enormous joy in most kids. Add the word paint, and the fact that this is a super-fast craft to prepare, and it’s a win. To make this beautiful fluffy snow paint you will need 3 ingredients: white glue, shaving cream (the white fluffy stuff; I like unscented), and glitter or sparkles. I was able to get all of these things at our local dollar store. I chose white sparkles to go along with the snow theme, but any colour of sparkle would be fun. Mix equal parts shaving cream and white glue in a mixing bowl, once completely blended add the sparkles and mix some more. Sometimes the glue works best if you chill it in the fridge first. You want the mixture to stay like a fluffy cloud rather than runny. If in doubt add more shaving cream. Use a large paintbrush to create your snowy pictures on a dark coloured paper. Through our trials I did find that using normal construction paper got a little soggy, so perhaps think about doubling up your papers, or use a heavier cardstock. Leave to dry for at least a day, sometimes more, due to the consistency

of the fluffy paint it can take a while to set and dry completely. Once dry, the paint has a soft squishy consistency and sits up off the page. Emily Ireland

Talking to Kids About Climate Change Most kids have heard a whole lot about climate change from the news, or at school, or just from overhearing adult conversations. But do they know what climate change is? Parents can sometimes forget that kids are absorbing things from the world around them, and sometimes they might need a little extra help to understand and not feel afraid. Explain what it is in a child-appropriate way Sites like this one (www.climatekids.nasa.gov/climate-change-meaning/) have many wonderful resources to explain what climate change is in a way that kids will understand, and include games and videos. Kids picture books, see (www.mother.ly/parenting/10childrens-books-climate-change) can be another great resource for talking about climate in an understandable way. Avoid the freakout Being a small kid in a big world can feel scary. When you talk about climate, communicate a message of action and hope. If kids know that they can do something to help, it inspires them to be responsible citizens and makes them feel less scared. Discuss changes the family can make with your child Could your family make small changes like eating less meat, turning off electronics, walking instead of driving short distances, and switching from paper towels to cloth napkins? It may feel like a small or insignificant thing to make a small change in your household, but it’s not. Not only do these actions help the earth, but they also teach children to be conscientious about the choices they make in their day-to-day lives. Make a plan to raise money for an environmental cause Donating some money, through a garage sale, lemonade stand or a saved-up allowance, to a climate change organization or another environmental group ( www.canadahelps. org/en/explore/charities/category/environment ) can help kids feel generous and like they are contributing to the cause. However you decide to tackle these conversations with your child, it’s important to have them. Knowledge will empower your children, make them feel less afraid and give them a sense of the power they have to change the world. Article by Scholars Education Centre staff.

Those Were The Days

“Sirens of Yesteryear” When I was a boy growing up in Windsor, Ontario it was safe to go downtown alone to either be among the hustle bustle of a thriving city center, or even to buy something if we had a few cents to spend. All the buses had a shiny steel pole in the front as soon as we boarded, the pole had a line etched into it and if you were shorter than the line you rode free otherwise we would have to pay a nickel for the ride. The trips downtown were always an adventure, S.S.Kresge store the largest of all the retail outlets, Woolworths, Metropolitan stores and Adelmans where Mom would take us for our back to school clothes, and service second to none. The Capital, Palace, Vanity and Empire theatres were all downtown as well as some of the best restaurants, oh how I remember the hot beef sandwiches for only .85 cents. The minute Kresges opened their doors in the morning the fifty seat lunch counter was filled to capacity and stayed filled through breakfast until the dinner hours. The store itself was the busiest of all the stores downtown and at any hour of the day there would be at least three or four dozen shoppers milling around. But that all ended on December 24, 1945 when a fire gutted the entire store. It seemed the city was alive with sirens blaring from every direction, at first no one knew what was happening or where the fire engines were headed because the war had ended only a few months prior, but the news quickly spread about one of the city’s greatest loss. It was again in December we heard the sirens, December 14, 1948 when Adelmans was completely destroyed by fire. Adelmans

Since 1994

was around the corner from Kresges no more than a block away, a shopper’s paradise among Windsor’s downtown attractions. Much like the Kresge fire, it took firemen days to finally put out the last stubborn embers. It seemed downtown Windsor was not the place to be when danger reared its ugly head because the worst devastation of Windsor’s downtown was the explosion at the Metropolitan Store, just a few blocks away from Kresge’s and Adelmen’s. On October 25, 1960 the store was destroyed by a massive explosion which killed ten shoppers and injured more than one hundred, ambulance sirens rang out for hours on end. A defective gas line that extended along the main floor ignited blowing out the rear wall, causing the two upper floors to collapse trapping many customers and employees. The blast shattered the front glass scattering debris and broken shards up and down Ouellette Avenue injuring all those who were nearby. WW II air raid sirens had long since been dismantled and we no longer had to endure the haunting shrill alerts, but I can still vividly remember the firetruck and ambulance sirens in the middle 1900s echoing across the city, and as we enter a new year I am saddened recalling those devastating disasters that helped end the era of the popular 5 and 10 cent stores.
