purchased the Sunroom Division from North Star Manufacturing (London) Ltd. in 1995. Over the next 22 years, the Carroll brothers continued to expand their operations. Lake Kashagawigamog The Haliburton Highlands is a vast and stunning region of Cottage Country containing more than 600 lakes. Lake Kashagawigamog is one of the largest in the area and is in fact a widening of the Drag River (formerly known as Burnt River) which flows from Drag Lake into a chain of five lakes at Head Lake and then out again at Canning Lake. It is part of the TrentSevern Waterway system. Kashagawigamog is the central lake in the chain, connected to Canning Lake to the west, Soyers Lake to the north, and Grass Lake and Head Lake to the east. It stretches for 16 kilometers and is located minutes from the Village of Haliburton. The name 'Kashagawigamog' (pronounced “Ka-Shag-A-WigA-Mog”) is an Anishnaabeg name meaning “lake of long and winding waters”. The lake was an important passageway for the First Nations people, who used it when travelling to their traditional hunting grounds, and for the early European settlers who began arriving in the late 1800s. Construction of roadways was not completed in the area until 1868 so Kashagawigamog and the adjoining Canning Lake were the first links between Haliburton and Minden with lumber being transported and delivered to the south by

waterways. Kashagawigamog lies within the area known as 'The Land Between' and not only is it home to a diversity of species found both in the north and the south but also to a number that are unique to that area. Kashagawigamog has the oldest cottaging history in the country and although the lake shore is well populated with cottages and resorts they are hidden from view by the dense forest which comprises of deciduous and conifer trees. Lake 'Kash', as it is known to many, provides endless boating and is famous for its trout fishing. Its north end is popular for bass and walleye, and it's said the muskie here are much larger, fighting fish making fishing for them particularly challenging. Situated deep in the heart of Cottage Country, Lake Kashagawigamog provides all those who land on its shores with a taste of paradise. Photo Credit Bonnie View Inn

Cottage Opening Tips Spring has finally sprung and that moment you've been dreaming of all winter has arrived ... it's time to open up the cottage again. Before you make that trek up to paradise it helps to take the time to plan ahead. You can't go wrong with a checklist – nothing worse than getting there and ending up running into a problem with plumbing, lighting or heating, or discovering you've left something important behind. Obviously, the main purpose of going to the cottage is to relax, so the more preparation you do now the more time you'll have to unwind and enjoy that long-awaited beer on the dock. Many a seasoned cottager has learned these lessons the hard way, so if you are new to cottaging these expert tips should make the process go a lot smoother, and help you avoid any unnecessary expense and stress!
Most important tip? Don’t forget the keys! • • •
When you first arrive, do a full perimeter check. Look for fallen trees, hydro lines, missing shingles, damage to windows and siding. Whether your cottage is on piers, blocks or concrete, frost can move things around, so have a good look at your substructure. Do a visual check of water lines, drains and any exposed wiring under the cottage. Check the stability of all stairs, decks, and railings.
Time to go inside. • • • •
Open all of the windows and doors to refresh the air. Look for any obvious signs of water damage or critter damage. Connect the water pump and prime it. Connect your dishwasher and washer/ dryer, if you have them. Close all bleeder valves and drainage valves. To prep your hot water tank - close the bottom drain, open the supply valve and open the pressure release valve near the top.
Always make safety a priority! • •
Before flipping the main hydro breaker, turn all of the other breakers off. Turn on the main, then each breaker one at a time with someone inside for safety.
Don’t turn the hot water heater on yet. • • •
Go back inside and check the lights and use a tester for all of your plugs. Testers are an inexpensive way to keep safe. Now fire up the water pump and bleed the air from the cold water lines. One tap at a time. Once the hot water tank is full, close the upper valve and flip the breaker on. Repeat the bleeding process for the hot water taps.
Replace the batteries in the smoke detectors and check the charge of your fire extinguishers. • If you are waterfront, check your dock system and shoreline. When you're preparing your list of things to take, don't forget to add a supply of batteries and a tester for your plugs, as well as bug bombs and repellent just in case any little critters have moved in. • Stock up on non-perishable items and cleaning supplies on this first trip – it makes subsequent trips simpler. • Prepare and pack up all the ingredients for a slow cooked meal, so all you have to do is plug it in and enjoy the aroma while you work. Lastly, take a deep breath of fresh cottage air, you are ready to unpack! By Dave Linkert Site Supervisor, Port 32 Marshall Homes Have a question for Dave? Or a topic you think he should write about? Bringing Your
Garden Indoors
by Moira Gale
As soon as April arrives it can be challenging to find the patience to wait for the May 24th weekend to get our hands dirty – we want to start planting now! These days, with the increasing changes in weather patterns it may be more tempting than ever to start your garden early, however, it's worth assuming that the weather will likely continue to be very unpredictable at this time of year. Why not err on the side of caution and get started indoors to help stave off that craving for green thumbs? You'll still get to enjoy the sensation of the soil running through your fingers and you won't have to worry about a sudden frost destroying all your hard work. Here in Ontario some of the most popular seeds to start indoors are tomato, lettuce, onion and pepper (can you taste that home-grown salad yet?) all of which can be started in seed trays or flats – don't forget to label them! Ideally, your seed trays should be placed in a draft-free area where the room temperature is around 15C or 16C (about 60F) and away from household traffic and pets. Of course, they will need lots of light - a sunny, south-facing window would be the ideal spot to let them grow as long as the temperature in the room remains fairly constant. If you don't have enough room by a window you may need to buy some fluorescent lights. Seedlings need warm soil to develop strong roots. For those who are still a little “green” at gardening, try tomatoes to start as they are fairly easy to get going. Their seeds will germinate and grow quickly and you can sow them indoors about six weeks before the average last frost date. Other good choices for beginners are Nasturtium, Coleus, Zinnia, and Basil. Check your seed packets before you begin so you can estimate the best time to start each plant – they will all have unique requirements and it helps to do some research and consult with the experts before you begin. Happy planting!

Colours for 2017 A big impact on how we feel is greatly influenced by the colours and styles we choose for our home. Certain colours can be uplifting, others relaxing, and some evoke strong emotions which can dramatically affect our mood. The right colour can add fun or depth to a room, and the colours we choose often reflect something of our own personalities. Design professionals spend a great deal of time researching and planning in order to create the perfect colour. We took a peak at what experts are saying about colour trends for 2017 and found a common theme: the colour purple. Purple has always had a connection to royalty as well as to magic and mystery. Worn by emperors, bishops, and aristocracy it is an intense colour with many beautiful variations. Each of the companies we looked at chose a different adaptation on the tint, tone and shade of this luxurious colour.
The Dulux colour of the year was inspired by the galaxy and their team also decided on a “mid-intensity, grey-violet” colour. Dubbed “Extra-Terrestrial”, their “Starry Sky” is described as mysterious, calming and exciting all at once. This colour can be complemented by moss green or greyblue and also looks stunning set against white fixtures and metallic accessories, as shown on their website.
In combination with the strong position of purple and its many "hues", the kitchen trends of grey, grey wash and vanilla or cream are a rich and popular combination that is seeing entrance to many people’s homes. As homeowners become more "staycation" savy, they are experimenting with many more color combinations and bringing a sense of daring into their own space.
Sico Canada chose “Mozart violet”, which is actually more grey than purple making it quite versatile.
Bonnie Moore, Designer Patefacio Design Inc. 905.717.7937 Millbrook and Region
The Benjamin Moore design team named their colour of the year for 2017 “Shadow”. They studied trends both at home and abroad, and, significantly inspired by the arts, the team settled on this dramatically rich hue. Questions To Ask When Choosing a
Paving Company When you are deciding on which contractor you will choose to provide you with driveway paving, or decorative or stamped concrete, it is important to know the right questions to ask before you begin. It is especially important to first find out if your contractor is local, how long they have been in business, and also to find out where you can view some of their work. Once you've chosen your contractor, begin by presenting them with your ideas for what you would like to accent your home or cottage. Get some advice on what would suit the surroundings and climate of your space. Frost and drainage issues are important factors to consider. Owner of Van de Bor Paving, Mike Van de Bor, recommends asking the following questions: • Will there be a written estimate provided?
16
• Do they have insurance to cover any unforeseen accident on your premises? • Can the project be completed in your timeline? •
What are their standards on base construction and drainage? (Whether its asphalt, concrete or interlock, the best practice is to use 12” of properly compacted gravel.)
• Is the contractor a right fit for your project, and do they show confidence in making your dream a reality? • Do they provide a guarantee? Van de Bor Paving is a third generation company established in Peterborough by John Van de Bor in 1955. Mike took over in 1987 and now runs the company together with his eldest son Cory. After over 35 years

in business, Mike Van de Bor has seen the asphalt and decorative concrete industry evolve many times. One thing that has never changed is customers wanting quality work that will last. Van de Bor Paving will always provide a proper base construction and allow for proper drainage. Another very important question to ask is whether a down payment is required. At Van de Bor Paving rarely do they ask for a deposit and typically only require payment upon completion. Van de Bor Paving Ltd. 1308 Stewart Line, R.R.3, Cavan (705) 742 4554 www.vandeborpaving.ca

Considerations when
Buying a Waterfront Property Many of us dream of that morning coffee on the dock or drifting off to sleep to the sound of loons, but turning these dreams into reality can be challenging. In the city, we have municipal roads, water, and sewers; life at the cottage however can be significantly different. A cottage road may or may not be year-round; it may depend on a right-of-way, which may or may not be registered on title. Water can come from the lake or a well, which may be drilled or dug, and the septic may be a holding tank or a full septic system. The infrastructure at the lake is different, but it need not be scary. This region is blessed with hundreds of lakes, some are located off the beaten path, hidden in the hills of the Canadian Shield, others are located on the Trent-Severn Waterway which provides endless boating opportunities and connects us with the Great Lakes and beyond. The good thing about buying a cottage here is that no matter what interests you, we can find the right lake. There are several things to consider when buying waterfront property, including a myriad of government regulations which affect waterfront development. The important thing to remember
Since 1994
is that it is critical to work with a realtor who understands the ins and outs of buying, building, and living at the cottage. Many local realtors specialize in cottages and can guide you every step of the way, helping you make the decision that is right for you. Owning a cottage, away from the hustle and bustle of every day life enriches the quality of your life dramatically. Planning vacations to get much needed time away to relax and rejuvenate will become a thing of the past once you own your own getaway retreat in our beautiful cottage country. By Andrew Marshall BA ERS Andrew Marshall, also known as “The Paddling Realtor” and is a sales representative with Bowes and Cocks in Peterborough and Haliburton. Those Were The Days
Be A Sport
I have no idea why I keep them, my wife calls them dust collectors and to a degree I have to agree. I am referring to the trophies I won during a younger period of my life, a couple dozen bowling trophies, a half dozen darts, the same number in hockey, three or four in golf and a couple sales awards all sitting prominently on the shelves of my home office. Yes, they do have sentimental value and a lot of good memories wrapped up in each and every one of them, but I am a realist and know when I am gone and no one wants the clutter of all my trophies well, I guess they will just end up in the junk yard. How can I forget the five years I played goal in an industrial league for the Autotote Maple Leafs winning the goal tending award four years out of the five, then, breaking three fingers on my right hand stopping a slap shot. I have a plastic finger to remind me of one of those trophies, but injuries heal and I could not wait to get back between the pipes. I beat the Canadian dart champion once although I think he was a bit tipsy at the time but hey, a trophy is a trophy. In ten pins I won high single 289, high triple 705 and high average 205 bowling in the classic leagues in Windsor, Ontario and although I was never a great or even good golfer, I had my moments. I bowled on a few leagues with my wife who one year won a large Labatt’s silver tray, she was so proud and I was so proud for her but, I won the same award and silver tray the following year, an award I wish I had not won, I think you know what I am saying. When I was a kid in grade school I was in track and hockey, it was during the war years and all the kids in the neighbourhood played field hockey, scrub baseball or any sport to get us outside and running. In high school I held a record in 100 yard low hurdles, played basketball and was a drummer in the school band. So why am I writing all of this, to toot my own horn? Not in the least, most seniors will readily relate with the sports we participated in and the memories we established back in “those days”, the days we were told to get outside and play, the days before texting and video games, the days before the increase in diabetes and obesity. When was the last time you saw a bunch of kids playing scrub baseball, kicking a soccer ball or flying a kite? When was the last time you saw young and not so young eyes engrossed in the palm of their hand? Your answer just proved my point. Submitted by Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

Resort Living FULFILLS THE DREAM OF COTTAGE LIFE For many people nowadays, cottage ownership is no longer an affordable reality and that's not only due to sky-rocketing purchase prices. When you consider taxes, running costs, maintenance and upkeep, as well as mortgage and loan payments, a cottage can end up being a huge drain on finances. Often the financial burden which owning a cottage places upon a family will cause more stress to them than the amount of time spent relaxing at the cottage can alleviate. The beauty of recreational cottage ownership with Great Blue Resorts is that not only is it very affordable but owning the cottage means just that - it is 100% yours; no timeshare or fractional ownership. Access to recreational facilities and assistance with maintenance means you and your family get to spend more time enjoying yourselves and less time working on the upkeep of the property.
Bonnie Lake Resort is the newest addition to Great Blue Resorts. Located just 20 minutes north of Bracebridge, Muskoka it is approximately a 2-hour drive from the GTA. Bracebridge is just 15 minutes north of Gravenhurst, a vibrant community rich in arts, culture and heritage, where visitors can enjoy a unique shopping and dining experience. Just down the road from the resort is an 18hole golf course at Bracebridge Golf Club. Bonnie Lake is the largest private lake of its kind in the area boasting 200 acres of pure, spring-fed water. With over 1,100 acres of private, unspoiled wilderness to explore, outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy being surrounded by the tall, fresh pines and the opportunity to see a large variety of different species of birds and wildlife. traditional Canadian cottage life – a cute little cottage nestled away in a forested area with a few neighbors and breathtaking views of a lake. In a resort setting, add to that daily Kidz Klub activities, wine-and-cheese nights for the adults, movie nights under the stars and, of course, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. extra breathability and can be crunched into a suitcase, yet still retain their original shape making them perfect for travelling. They come in a variety of traditional colours including red, black, brown and the classic Black Watch plaid. Many of the beautiful hats found at London Trading Post are in the same style as those seen at Ascot. London Trading Post is also the exclusive Barmah hat agent for this area. The popular “squashy” Barmah hat is often referred to as a “squashy cooler”. These Australian-made hats are constructed of kangaroo skin and cowhide and have a meshed crown for cooler, more comfortable summer wear. In other words, if you have a cottage which you wish to rent out at $1000 per week, the owner gets $800, the agency gets $200 and everyone is happy. Any agency who says they can do it for less than 20% possibly can do so but only by cutting corners and you do not want an agency cutting corners on representing your cottage which is the second largest
Don’t be discouraged. Here in Ontario, there are several companies who are classified as full-service cottage rental agencies who are registered with TICO, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario, and who are able to rent out your property and do so at a reasonable cost. However, be very careful when choosing your agency because there is a multitude of agencies out there and most of them do not even operate out of Canada. Some only charge a few hundred dollars or so to list a cottage on their site but be aware, you will end up doing all the work which a full-service agency does on a daily basis. What You Need to Know About Heating & Cooling Incentives for 2017 by Tracey Allison
Have you heard about this year’s heating and cooling incentives? Residents and businesses in Ontario who have purchased and installed eligible central heating or cooling equipment through a participating contractor may be eligible for the 2017 Heating & Cooling Incentive program. Heating and cooling can account for up to 60% of your yearly electricity costs, so it is important to reduce your usage. Especially if your system is over 10 years old, it could be costing you more and by upgrading to high efficiency you’ll save money, have warranty protection, and it is less harmful to the environment. In order to be eligible, you must be a resident of Ontario and all services (including purchase and installation) must be performed by a participating contractor of the Heating & Cooling Incentive program. You can find a complete list of participating contractors at www.hraiheatingcoolingincentive. ca or call 1-877-688-3062. According to www.saveonenergy.ca, the incentives available are: • $250 incentive when you replace your existing furnace with the purchase and installation of a new eligible high-efficiency furnace equipped with an Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM). • $250 incentive when you purchase and install a new ENERGY STAR certified central air conditioning (CAC) system that satisfies at least a 14.5 SEER and 12 EER. • $400 incentive when you purchase and install an ENERGY STAR certified CAC system that satisfies at least a 15 SEER and 12.5 EER. Check the eligibility requirements and the specific terms and conditions, listed on their Web site, for each of these incentives. Oil, electric, natural gas and propane furnaces all qualify, as long as they are included on the list of eligible products. Once the new unit has been installed, your contractor should enter your online incentive form, ensure that the equipment’s serial and model numbers are included and send in a copy of your invoice as well. Be sure to follow the dates for participating and claiming your incentives. In 2017, eligible equipment must be installed between January 1 and June 30. Your contractor must enter your online incentive by July 8 and you must submit your proof of purchase no later than August 1 this year.

SPRING …
At the Farm
There is excitement in the air … the sunshine lasts longer, the breeze is warm and the crows are calling their welcome to spring! As horse people, we are particularly enthusiastic about warmer weather. No more snow load sliding off the arena roof, or the bitter cold winds of winter blowing and creating an atmosphere of terror in our indoor arena … as flight animals our horses, even those that are normally quiet and dependable, can become frazzled animals that bolt and run … and as such, we the riders … look forward to spring more than other animal lovers!! As soon as the crows begin their February calls, we as horse owners, begin to wake up to the arrival of spring. We longingly look to the outdoor sand ring and round pen, hoping that soon it will be dry enough for us to ride and school outside. Spring has a common theme for all horse stables: mud and horses shedding. Neither are fun but both are a reality. Some farms have more mud and some horses shed in greater quantity … but on the bright side, both are signs of warmer weather coming. And warmer weather gets us out of our winter slumber and begs us to ask the question … What inspires us? Accomplishing new goals or completing old ones. Attendance at equine fairs, booking lessons or attending clinics is always a good way to begin a season. Spring at a horse stable brings reflection on what was and what is yet to come.
Spring is accompanied by the resurgence of life. The chirping robins herald the arrival of longer days and warmer weather. Spinnaker our King Charles rescue has taken an oath of fitness. Unfortunately running around the kitchen after food doesn’t fit the bill. These spaniels were the favorites of royalty and I could see Spinny as an official food taster for the king. Whether it its toast or turkey Spin puts all comers through a thorough sniff test with 99% of the offerings falling prey to his gullet. With ingestion comes weight gain. Spin is on the path to his fighting weight to get back into his sailor suit. Approximately 50% of dogs are over weight. The key to weight loss is decreased food intake. Sorry Spinnaker! Exercise is important to one’s well being but decreasing the calories consumed is the answer. Personally I know that one-hour walking briskly on the treadmill qualifies me for one Lean Cuisine meal. Killing our best friends with kindness in the form of food is the downfall. Obesity leads to diabetes, increased cancer risk, and heart disease. This time last year Christi discovered a small mass on Amigo Habernero (our friendly pepper beach dog). Closer examination revealed an engorged tick that was removed and sent to the lab for testing. Ticks unfortunately are becoming much more common and with them the incidence of Lyme disease. Lyme disease can cause lameness, lethargy or be asymptomatic. Now is the time for annual blood testing of your pet for Lyme disease, Heartworm, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichia. Protection from tick diseases comes as topical drops or oral tablets giving three months protection. Give PAH a call at 705 745 4605. Top Tips on Air Travel with Pets Plan your itinerary carefully.
Don’t pick the four-leg trip for your four-legged friend just because it’s $50 cheaper than the non-stop flight. Think about the stress of repeated takeoffs and the risk of missed connections.
Understand airlines’ policies and restrictions.
Not only do airlines have complicated fee structures for flying with pets, they also restrict certain breeds and may refuse to transport your pet during certain times of year or when extreme temperatures are forecast. Research the policies fully and be sure to compare, as each airline’s policy is different.
“Package” your pet properly.
Be certain to crate your pet in the smallest airline-approved pet carrier that will still allow him to stand and turn around. Contact the airline well in advance of your flight to reserve the flight for your pet and to make certain that you understand (and follow) all regulations. Remember, these regulations are in place to keep your pet safe and ensure that airline employees can care for your pet properly while traveling.
My pet is “special.”
If you have a “unique” pet…a ferret, a snake, a hedgehog, a turtle, a lizard…be SURE to check airline restrictions. Most airlines only allow dogs or cats in the cabin. You do not want to show up at the gate, only to be told that Terry the Tarantula can’t come along. This is especially important if this is your child’s pet! Besides, imagine if one passenger brought his pet rat and the passenger across the aisle brought his pet snake. No one wants to see that in-flight movie! In the end, use common sense and good judgment when planning a trip with your pet. Consider him the way you would a small child— anticipate his needs, and meet them early and often. Submitted by Kathryn Rutledge, Invisible Fence of South East Ontario 1-866-804-1250 www.seoontario.invisiblefence.com
Carrying on your pet.
If your pet is small enough to stay with you in the cabin, remember that you still must reserve space for him as a passenger — you can’t just show up and stick him under your seat! He will have to be in an airline approved, soft-sided carrier, and most airlines limit the number of pets allowed in the cabin on a single flight.

How To Awaken Your Spirit This Spring by Moira Gale
Winter is an enjoyable season for many of us especially those who thrive on winter sports. As long as you don't mind the extreme cold, the shorter days, or the reduced levels of sunshine then winter is a breeze. For others, though, it can be a little more challenging to shake off those “winter blues”. After being in hibernation mode for so long it's easy to forget about the therapeutic benefits which can be gained from nature. If you're still feeling a little unmotivated despite the arrival of spring, here are some reminders of how transformative time spent outdoors can be. Have you ever noticed how some of your best ideas come to you whenever you're near water? Head for the nearest river or beach and just watch the hypnotic movement of the water. When we pause for a while sometimes we can find inspiration - or the answer to a problem - hidden within the gentle sounds of moving water. Stand in the sun for as long as you can and let the heat penetrate your skin deeply. If you listen closely you will almost hear the cells in your body thanking you. Observe the way you are breathing and notice how rejuvenating the fresh air feels when you take deeper, longer breaths as it infuses new life into your blood. It may still be a little cool for walking around barefoot, but getting closer to the earth and soaking up some of its electrons can be very invigorating, and even scientists agree it's good for your health. Resting on a smooth rock or getting closer to the trees can also have an incredibly calming effect on us. What could be more blissful than stepping out of your shoes for a moment, leaning up against a tree and listening to the sound of running water as you soak up the sun's rays? Spring is the perfect time to do it and as Hippocrates said, “Nature itself is the best physician”. It sure is cheaper than therapy!

Sudden Cardiac Arrest? In Canada, 35,000 to 45,000 people die of cardiac arrest each year and up to 85 percent of all cardiac arrests occur in public places or at home. Knowing how to respond to a cardiac arrest can increase the odds of survival and recovery by 30 percent or more (Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada). An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a device containing sophisticated electronics used to identify cardiac rhythms and to deliver a shock to correct abnormal electrical activity in the heart. This sophistication provides the ability for anyone to use the device by following prompts and effectively perform CPR. The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends Canadians have widespread access to AEDs and that targeted responders be authorized, trained, equipped and directed to operate an AED if their responsibilities require them to respond to persons in cardiac arrest. Meet Terry Lowe owner of Padcore Plus, a training agency endorsed by the City of Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service — Public Access Defibrillator Program. Padcore offers sales of the device and Heart and Stroke Foundation certification in CPR and AED skills, as well as First Aid Provider Training. They provide Quality Assurance and Monitoring of existing private Public Access Defibrillator PAD sites and assist new clients in developing their PAD sites. Terry previously taught in the Pre-Hospital Care setting which provided training to firefighters, nurses, teachers, dental assistants and hygienists etc., who were enrolled in the program through various agencies. Padcore Plus provides assistance to different organizations throughout the Kawarthas such as Chaulk Woodworking, a kitchen company in Minden, who keep an AED on their premises for the safety of both clients and staff. It's worth remembering that distance is a factor for emergency services to reach someone in distress here in Cottage Country, and the probability of survival declines by 7% to 10% with each minute that passes. The cost of purchasing an AED is surprisingly low when we consider that the time spent waiting for EMS to arrive may cost someone their life. Contact Terry to purchase an AED for your home, cottage, event, or business. You'll be surprised to learn that having an AED is more affordable than you realize. www.padcoreplus.ca 705-878-4275

When Travelling with Health Issues Nursing professionals are all faced with daily challenges, regardless of where they work. Caring for a patient while airborne however will be entirely different from caring for a patient in a hospital setting. Very few medical professionals have had the benefit of flight training or aeromedical education which will cause decision making to be difficult because of their lack of knowledge and experience. Flight Registered Nurses on the other hand must receive comprehensive instruction on all the critical elements of flight, and there are many. Everyone who gets on an aircraft, is in a unique environment that has the potential to bring with it any number of stressors that come along with flying. Add the complication of an already compromised patient who is ill or injured, the Registered Nurse must have specialized flight training and the expertise to respond to any medical episode that could occur during transport. Peace of mind for the passenger and family regarding the chance of any in flight issues is tremendously reduced by the accompaniment of a Flight Registered Nurse. Because of the physical and mental demands placed on Flight Nurses, not everyone would find this a suitable occupation. For Flight Nurses, there are many intrinsic rewards. The impact on the lives of the patient and families, whether its the successful repatriation of a patient to their home province or country, or aiding those travelling with serious health concerns…this is a highly specialized and rewarding career.

Integrity would dictate that everyone in healthcare has a responsibility to themselves and to their patients to obtain as much knowledge and information regarding their specialty and where their duties are performed. Ideally, those with specific expertise should always be utilized for the benefit of the patient. In the case of Flight Registered Nurses, the learning journey will never end.

Your Estate Planning There are several valuable things that you will get from having a comprehensive financial plan, and as you near your retirement years, your estate will become even more important to you. That is why a plan is not complete without a thorough look at what your estate may look like from today until your life expectancy. By doing this, you will be able to identify tax risks to the estate and still have the time to take action to mitigate those risks. For example, many Canadians are not aware that their registered accounts (RRSPs, RRIFs, LIRAs, and LIFs) are deemed to be disposed of at death unless there is a surviving spouse to receive a tax-free rollover of the assets. The disposition means the total value of such accounts become income for the deceased, bringing with it a potentially massive tax bill. Capital gains on investment and property assets will also factor into the additional tax levy on the estate. Depending on an individual’s estate objectives, the
Since 1994

tax hit could mean that some wishes are not fulfilled. If we identify these risks soon enough, we can employ a number of estate strategies. These would include permanent insurance policies designed to cover the size of the additional estate taxes, either held personally or (preferably) within your corporation. Investment accounts that are not currently jointly held can be switched to joint status to reduce the impact of capital gains (and probate fees) on the death, and the same strategy can also be applied to property. Another popular estate tactic is to create a living will now to shelter assets from probate. This can also lower the taxation for an individual in their retirement years, while ‘sprinkling’ income to beneficiaries who may not be in as high a tax bracket. The most important point in estate planning is making sure that you review your will on a regular basis, because life changes. I typically recommend that clients who are in their retirement years look at their will every five years to ensure that all their wishes are reflected. Changes to Education Tax Credits Last year’s federal budget brought an unwelcome change to the tax credits we’ve come to expect for post-secondary education. Because they didn’t come into effect until January 2017 – and won’t be on our radar until tax season next year – these changes have not received much attention. Tuition fees paid will still result in a non-refundable tax credit, saving taxes of 15% federally and 5.05% provincially and able to be carried forward or transferred to a parent or spouse. The additional credits for the months you were in school have been eliminated (“Education and Textbook Credits”). In 2016, these tax credits federally were $465 per month of full-time study and $140 for part-time. The provincial credits were $539 and $161 respectively. So, for example, if you were attending university full-time for the fall and winter semesters (8 months), the maximum tax reduction for 2016 was $776. The argument behind these changes was that the credits did not provide any direct help to students. Instead the feds boosted Canada Student Grant amounts available to students. The grants climbed to $3,000 from $2,000 for full time students coming from low-income families and to $1,200 from $800 for middle-income family students. Part-time students from lowincome families are eligible for $1,800, an increase of $600. Unfortunately, definitions of “low-income” and “middle-income” were not available at this time. Student loans will not be repayable until a graduate is earning $25,000 a year (currently $20,210) which will also take some pressure off. A $400 grant increase in exchange for a $776 tax credit will not be much consolation to the “middle-income family” students… or their parents who were counting on a tax break as a reward for putting their kids through university. Can You Afford a Lawyer? Lawyers traditionally bill for their work by time with an hourly rate that may frighten you away. The hourly rate includes the lawyer’s office overhead, which can be where over half of the fee goes. That is no comfort if you can not afford the rate quoted. More senior lawyers have higher hourly rates which in smaller centers like Peterborough and cottage country rarely go over $500. In Toronto rates of up to $1,000 per hour are not uncommon. More junior lawyers especially in smaller towns may charge in a range of $200 to $300 per hour but they may spend more hours doing the job than a more experienced lawyer and it could cost more with a junior lawyer at a lower hourly rate. If the job is a basic one which any lawyer can do it is best to go to a less experienced lawyer with a lower rate or to a firm which can have a junior lawyer take on the task. You may now be thinking you can not afford a lawyer but there are alternatives to hourly rates. Specific services are often offered by lawyers at a set price. For example Wills, basic contracts and real estate transactions may be offered for a set price. These prices tend to be competitive between firms the lowest price is not necessarily the best deal. If you are charged with a criminal offense, where you face jail time if convicted, you may qualify for legal aid. To fight a criminal charge without legal aid you will most likely have to pay an hourly rate or represent yourself, but you can get some free help from government paid Duty Counsel who are at the court. If you are sued or being sued legal aid is not available but if you have a good claim you may be able to hire a lawyer with a contingency fee where the lawyer gets paid from the proceed of the claim. Lawyers generally will not take such cases unless they think the claim is highly likely to succeed with a good amount of money that can be collected, usually from an insurance company. Contingency fees are not allowed in family law matters but you may be able to pledge your assets from the relationship to pay the lawyer’s hourly rate account. If you are being sued and can not afford a lawyer your options are limited and may include bankruptcy. The main thing is to get the right lawyer for your needs. It should end up costing you less if your lawyer has experience and skill needed for the job. Most lawyers will meet you once for free to discuss your situation and like your mother said “you better shop around”. Submitted by Murray H. Miskin, Miskin Law Office, Peterborough, www.miskinlaw.ca

Volunteering
A Valuable Experience Donating your time to a cause you are passionate about can be very rewarding, but it is often difficult to find the time. When life gets busy, it’s easy to push the thought of volunteering out of your mind. Many local not-for-profit organizations rely on volunteers to provide guidance and assistance with day-to-day operations. The Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is no exception. With a small staff, the Chamber relies on the expertise and dedication of many volunteers. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, when we recognize those who give their valuable time to a cause they believe in. The Kawartha Chamber has over 30 active volunteers. Many are small business owners and community leaders. To our volunteers – we sincerely thank you for your dedication, expertise, and valuable presence throughout the year. There is no doubt that volunteers are essential for not-forprofit organizations – but what’s in it for you, the one giving up your time? Enhance Your Professional Development: Engage with other

volunteers and business professionals who are sharing their expertise. Learn from the organization you are volunteering with, you might pick up a new skill! Meet New People: Being a volunteer gives you the opportunity to make valuable contacts in your community and make lasting connections for years to come. Share Your Expertise: As a professional, provide advice and guidance in your field of expertise – give tips on marketing, event planning, human resources etc. Make a Difference: Choose an organization that you are passionate about. Watching a cause that you believe in achieve success will make the hard work well worth it. Volunteering doesn’t have to be a burden and one more thing on your ‘to do’ list. Assist wherever you can – you will provide an organization with a valuable asset to help achieve their mission. Spring Cleaning Your Car Fast & Easy! Spring is in the air and with this beautiful season comes the desire to clean! But it’s not just your home needing to freshen up, after a long winter on the messy roads, our vehicles are in need of a good clean up too! Inside and out you’ll want to get your car Spring ready and here are some tips to make the job faster and easier.
The Hunter County Cuisine and Wine Bar is a new addition to the Hunter Street café district. Owner Kevin McKenna features locally sourced Peterborough county area farm based cuisine, paired with Ontario only wine, beer and spirits. Located at 211 Hunter street, check it out in person or find them on Facebook.
Starting with the outside, if you have a nice day and like washing it yourself - get scrubbing or to keep things faster and easier head to the car wash where you’ll have everything you need there. Remove all of the Winter's road salt, mud and grime. Finish off the wash with a car wax, to seal the paint and add a shiny coat.
Baby Evia
Now for the interior, that has also suffered over the Winter months. Start by removing garbage and junk and don’t forget under the seats and the trunk. It is best to start with cleaning the inside roof and work your way down. Don’t take your mats out until after you are finished cleaning the inside of the car, so they can catch the debris that falls as you clean. Through the winter months the dirty car mats and carpets will especially be in need of a good clean up. Remove the mats and hose them down with a pressure washer to really cut through the build up. If you don’t own one, you can use one at a self-service car wash. Vacuum the carpets and use carpet cleaner if needed with and a heavy-duty scrub brush. Let the mats dry thoroughly before putting them back in.
Congratulations to Sanu Somaweera, Benev Limbong, and Nalaka Liyanage, the owners of Baby Evia, on winning the Cubs Lair competition last week. The trio launched their business the next day, selling a subscription service that delivers a box of baby clothing to your home every month. Made from organic cotton and SeaCell fabrics and designed by Oscar Mendoza, you get good quality carefully designed new baby clothes, delivered to your home, every month. www.babyevia.ca
Tiny Greens The winner, Tiny Greens. Owner Tina Bromley is two years into her business. A regular at the Lakefield and Peterborough Farmers Markets, Tina sells microgreens, vegetables, and herbs. The last step should be the windows, as they will get the dirt from the other steps on them while you clean. Use a good carwindow cleaner, as household cleaner contains ammonia which causes fogging. Your clean and fresh car will now be good to go hit the roads in this nice Spring weather.

Wholesale
Shopping HOW DOES LOWER COSTS AND A BETTER CHOICE OF PRODUCTS SOUND? THIS IS WHOLESALE SHOPPING! by Tracey Allison
Wholesalers buy goods directly from the manufacturers and usually sell them in large quantities to retailers, distributors, smaller sellers and some companies even sell to regular consumers. It is a common misconception that the only people who can buy from wholesalers are chain stores. Lucky for us, this is not always the case. Even though wholesale is geared towards restaurants, convenience stores, snack bars and other food related sectors, it is also a shopping experience everyday consumers can enjoy the benefits of as well. Buying wholesale is typically less expensive per unit, offers items in bulk which means fewer shopping trips, and provides ready access to a wide variety of high-quality products. Canadian company, SKOR Wholesale Marketplace, is a leader in the market. Since 1988, they have proudly serviced retail convenience and the food service industry. They now have four locations throughout Ontario, including their Peterborough location at 873 High Street. SKOR is also open to the general public and does not require a membership fee! SKOR offers a retail friendly environment with wholesale prices.
Since 1994
SKOR is a one stop shop, offering a vast range of food and non-food products. They have more than 8,000 items including frozen foods, meat products, dairy products, canned foods, candies and sweets, beverages, stationery, packaging products, kitchenware and so much more. They sell in large quantities by the case, and some items are even available to purchase per unit. If you are starting a new business, SKOR is the ideal place to go for all of your shopping needs. At SKOR their mission is to distribute the best products, at the best value, with exceptional customer service. They believe by treating customers, however large or small, with care and respect, has built a loyal customer base. It is their goal to help their customers succeed by providing innovative solutions to their needs, pricing that represents real value, and consistent quality products. Micro-Trail:
A Spring Adventure for Kids in Cottage Country It has been a long winter! The natural world was dressed in the muted colours of grey, white and brown. Our eyes are hungry for a surge of life. And in spring there are literally thousands of hues of green to savour as the natural world unfolds with vigour and new life. This is a great time to tear the kids away from their screens and to explore nearby nature. Whether it is your backyard or park or conservation area, there are some amazing discoveries close at hand. Here is a quick idea to help you connect kids to the beauty of their “neighbourwood.” Create mini trail: Visit a nearby green space. Take along some twine, popsicle sticks and scissors. Hunker down and take a closer look at the world on which you are standing. Do you notice the texture of that mushroom or the fanned gills underneath it’s nodding head? What about the gallery of bark beetle etchings scrolled across a log? Is that a form of natural writing with a tale to tell? The natural world is replete with stories both large and small. We tend to focus on the above world and we forget to look down – especially at the breathtaking detail that can be found in the very small.
Take your popsicle sticks and push them beside any nearby point of interest. Perhaps it is a chewed leaf, an egg mass, a spider’s web or a seed. Maybe you found a basement window? That is a log or a stone you can lift up and explore the underworld - full of sow bugs, centipedes, earthworms millipedes and perhaps even a salamander. When you have found a dozen or so points of interest, tie each string joining each popsicle stick to the next until you have a continuous string trail, 12 yards or so long, linking them all together. You’ve created a micro-trail! When you are finished, sit down and watch your trail quietly for 10 minutes or so. Did anything of note happen? Then take a trip along the trail, keeping your head close to the ground. If you have one, use a hand lens. Bring someone special to your micro-trail and give them a guided tour of your discoveries! Did they discover something you missed? By Camp Kawartha Photo Credit - Trudy M
Beach Pudding We have been dreaming about summer. Warm sunny days spent at the cottage. This idea for beachy pudding was completely thought up by my daughter. She made me a list of ingredients and supplies needed, sent me off to the store, and with minimal help constructed these super fun beach inspired pudding snacks. We used plastic wine glasses because I was told they needed to be fancy. Then we spooned 2 tablespoons of dry graham cracker crumbs into the bottom of the glass, this will be your ‘sand’. Prepare a large (6 serving) box of vanilla pudding and mix with 2-3 drops of blue food colouring; pour on top of the graham crumbs creating your ‘water’. Put in the fridge and let sit until pudding has firmed. When ready to eat, add a few gummy bears around the edge of the ‘water’ and complete with a cute paper beverage umbrella. This dessert brought a lot of smiles to our dinner table. It was a nice taste of summer on a rather wintery night. These would be great for a beach themed birthday party too! Emily Ireland

Celebrating Spring
at the Academy Theatre Spring is a time for growth, and Lindsay’s historic Academy Theatre is helping to nurture growth in the City of Kawartha Lakes with some special programming next month. On May 6 and 7 we focus on growing the talent within our area, with Kawartha’s Got Talent, a showcase of performances by remarkable local residents. In the first part of Kawartha’s Got Talent on Saturday May 6, we’ll display the talents of several performers selected from auditions held in March. A handful of those acts will then be chosen to perform again on Sunday’s show entitled Best of the Best, which will feature a performance by Lindsay’s own The Kents! While this event is for adult performers 19 and up, the Academy plans to hold another event for children and youth up to age 18. “We are excited to present this demonstration of the many gifted performers from the Kawartha Lakes,” said

Academy manager Don Hughes. “When you stop to think about it, this area has produced many exceptional talents. Right now, professionals like the James Barker Band, The Kents, and the Strumbellas are growing phenomenally in popularity. A year ago, The Strumbellas sold out two shows at the Academy, with opening act The Kents. We are trying to find a workable date for the James Barker band as well. This year, the Strumbellas are performing at The Junos, where they have three award nominations.” Growing the Gardens In addition to growing our talent, we’ll also provide a focus on growing our gardens. On Friday May 12, the Academy will feature a presentation by renowned gardening expert and author Mark Cullen. This event is entitled “The New Canadian Garden”, which is also the title of Mark’s most recent book.

Mark will not only focus on new trends in horticulture, but also examine the impact of changes in climate and biota, and how gardeners can adapt to them. Audience members can come prepared to ask Mark questions about their own experiences and challenges. Mark Cullen’s presentation at the Academy is being sponsored by Lindsay’s own Home Hardware. “Our local Home Hardware has been a regular supporter of the Academy Theatre, with many vital contributions to us,” noted Hughes. “With that chain’s ongoing affiliation with Mark Cullen, this was a natural fit, and the local business has recognized the need to support the Academy in delivering diverse and valuable programming in our community.” The Academy Theatre, 2 Lindsay Street S., Lindsay www.academytheatre.ca
