Discovering Cottage Country

Spring has Sprung Getting the Gardens Ready with Vikki Spring has sprung and we are thrilled! We do love crisp, white snow (especially for the protection it gives to perennials), but after three months, enough is enough. It’s time for mud, sightings of red breasted robins and visions of green leaves of bulbs pushing through the soil. Ah, Spring!

stocks, ranunculus, ivy and Spring blooming bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocus. Create some height in these pots with red or yellow dogwood sticks and pussy willow branches. Fun elements such as pin wheels or chicks and bunnies on sticks can be added.

Early April is too early to do much in the garden; we need to be careful to not rake aggressively and pull out tender grass shoots or to walk repeatedly and heavily on garden soil, compacting it and eliminating necessary air pockets. As the month progresses and soil dries and warms and grass is thickening and approaching green, you can begin the annual gardening tasks of raking, cutting back perennials and weeding.

As the weather fluctuates in Early Spring do protect seedlings (outdoors to “harden off”), tropical plants (outdoors to catch some quality sunshine) and even your cool weather plants like pansies. Tropical plants and seedlings should be removed from freezing or near freezing conditions while pansies and other pretty Spring blooms can be covered with light sheets to protect from frosty nights.

Other Spring-time tasks: clean and sharpen tools, plant seeds or tend to seeds already popping out of seed growing soil mix, set out containers and fill them with fresh potting soil. A few of your freshly filled pots can even be planted with a cheery mix of Spring blooms.

Only specific plants can tolerate the inconsistent outdoor temperatures in early Spring. Consider freshening up the look of your front entrance with pots with pretty pansies, English daisies,

Fifty and sixty-hour weeks threaten to steal cherished weekends and holidays, as many try to keep up. Planning for ongoing rejuvenation has become more important than ever before, especially as the medical community warns of the hazards of stress and too much time spent working. Our kids are spending less time outdoors engaging with others and with nature around us.

It’s time to make time to get away and re-connect with family, friends and nature!

Bring Spring Inside Spring is on our doorstep and some of us are already revelling in the sweet sights and sounds of nature. As plant life gets greener and the air turns warmer, many people are lucky enough to be creating their own personal outdoor oasis. Somewhere to relax and soak up that rejuvenating energy which springtime brings. For those of us who may not have access to the outdoors, though, here are some ideas to bring spring indoors: Water - Buy a small fountain. There are plenty of indoor water fountains to choose from, and they come in different sizes and varying price ranges. Just fill it with water, plug it in and enjoy the gentle sound of the falling water as it brings life and movement to your surroundings. Fresh Air - Open up those windows. It won't be long before the stale air is whisked away and the sensation of all that lovely fresh air blowing through your home has your spirit soaring. Increasing the flow of oxygen to our brains will increase the production of serotonin, so the more you breathe in the happier you will feel. Plant Life - Bring some greenery inside. Not only can you find plants which are beautiful to look at, but some of them will naturally purify the air for you. Plants not only produce oxygen, but many species will also remove dangerous toxins - including carcinogens – by absorbing them from the air in your home. Bird Song - For city dwellers, there may not be too many trees outside your window for birds to perch on but you can find a great selection of nature sounds on CD or online. Whether it is the gentle chirp of a robin or the unmistakable call of a chickadee, you will surely benefit from hearing the cheerful sounds of our feathered friends' spring songs as you relax in your own private sanctuary. Have fun creating your oasis – whether indoors or out - and remember, as Robin Williams said, “Spring is nature's way of saying 'let's party'”. Moira Gale connectionmoira@gmail.com

Easy Ways to Enhance a

Rustic Theme Creating an uncomplicated, attractive atmosphere for your home is as easy as using natural materials and a simple design that recalls past eras yet suits the needs of today's lifestyle. A rustic theme can satisfy both requirements, without the need for a sizeable decorating budget. Rural components are available in a variety of venues, but if you have a talent with tools or crafts, you can create some elements yourself. Here are a few of the components that make up a rustic atmosphere that provides a warm and relaxing background for family life and entertaining close friends. Wood Adds Warmth Wood provides the warm atmosphere that forms the basis of your rustic décor. You can indulge your love of beautiful woody tones, with rough-hewn flooring, trestle tables and side tables that invite family and friends to sit awhile for a chat. You can even use vertical or horizontal wooden beams to increase your use of wood in rooms. You can find some decorative wood items, such as lamps, bowls, vases, and artwork, that will help to continue the theme of homespun comfort and accessibility. Stone and Brick for a Natural Ambiance The use of stone for fireplaces, walls, and other focal points enhances the idea of natural materials used in building and makes a lasting, easy-to-maintain surface. Brick can also be used for these items, as well as for bookshelves, entryways, planters, and backsplashes.

Since 1994

Metal Creates a Crafted Look Decorative items made of metal help to reinforce the theme of simplicity and independence that was a part of the early periods of home life in America. Metal candle sconces, candlesticks, photo frames, drawer handles, and hinges increase the feel of craftsmanship. At flea markets and second-hand shops, you can find tools and implements that can be used as wall art to enhance the rustic look of rooms. Textiles That Recall Earlier Times You can then add some traditional textiles to enhance the theme of rustic living. Denim, burlap, canvas in solid colors or with small floral and country-themed patterns will add dimension and color to your room. Use these simple patterns for curtains, pillows and throws to make your living space look more comfortable and inviting. You can find many rustic-themed paintings, sculptures, and wall hangings at stores and shops in most areas of the country. However, you can also use your creativity to make many items of your own. Keep an eye out for materials that you can adapt to meet the requirements of your décor. You will be surprised at how easy and affordable it is to create a whole new look for your home.

Put the “OM” in Mom!

When your Mom voice is so loud that even the neighbours brush their teeth and get dressed, you know it is time to r-e-l-a-x, unwind and get into a nautical state of mind. B-r-e-a-t-h-e and put the “OM” in Mom.

“Om” is an important part of the word Mom as in yoga, it reflects the cosmological belief that the sound “Om” is associated with the creation of the universe and is the essence of life. In other words, “Mom.” Your Mom is a truly amazing woman, and we think it’s no coincidence that upside down, MOM spells WOW. At Happy Days, it is quite often Mom who books the houseboat because she's the one who knows everyone's schedule. The conversation typically flows towards how busy life is with school, work, extracurricular activities and friends. The struggle is real. We all know that families who play together stay together, and mothers are the glue that hold everything together. Even when you can't see them they're still holding the family together. Spending time together on board a houseboat this Mother's

Day and exploring your own aquatic backyard will make Mom's heart sing. Full training is provided, so the Captain and Crew will gain a full understanding of how to operate the boat and work together as a crew. An operator license that is in accordance with Transport Canada requirements is issued upon proof of driver competency. Driving Instructors will spend as much time with you as you need, so that you feel comfortable and competent on the water. And because Mom always puts the safety of her family first, and even loses sleep over it sometimes, she'll be happy to know that all required safety equipment is on board. Each houseboat features all the comforts of home and the fully equipped galley has everything you need to keep cooking with cheese. (pun intended!)

Between Lock 32 in Bobcaygeon and Lock 31 in Buckhorn there is over 250 km of shoreline to explore right in the heart of cottage country. Vibrant small communities, secluded islands, wildlife, and hiking in a natural wonderland appeals to the outdoor adventurer. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy mini-putt, golf and fishing. As our photogenic leader would say, "Fisher-people" will be happy as Walleye season opens on Mother's Day weekend. A perfect way to spoil Mom further is to take her out for dinner or hire a chef, visit the spa or give her a memorable piece of art from one of the many art galleries that are accessible by boat. Of course hugs and kisses go a long way too, as today's little moments become tomorrow's memories. What should you bring with you? Your Mom jeans, of course, and your favourite grapes. Remember to bring good old fashioned

Family is the anchor that holds us through life's storms and time spent together on board with Happy Days Houseboats is time well spent. Happy Mothers Day Moms! Up to $5000 in Window Rebates That sounds too good to be true! “It’s a typical reaction that we get from homeowners and cottage owners that hear about the new Green Ontario Fund rebate program for the first time, and with good reason”, says Wayne McNelly, General Manager of Nortech Windows. “This government fund offers significantly higher rebates that previous renovation programs did.” The mandate of the “GreenOn” fund is to reduce greenhouse gases by offering incentive programs to encourage homeowners to increase the energy efficiency of their homes. The plan is very simple. The fund provides $500.00 per window opening up to a maximum of $5000.00. Homeowners and cottage owners need to meet a few conditions to be eligible for the rebate.

The replacement windows must be included on the Energy Star Most Efficient 2018 List. These high-performance windows feature very low heat transfer and are rated for Zone 3, which covers all of Canada. Homeowners and cottage owners must be replacing an existing window, including the full frame. The opening must be insulated back to the wall studs for better efficiency. The windows must be installed by a contractor registered in the program who holds a Window Wise Certification and is a member of the Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada, which sets training, quality, financial and ethical standards and audits for its members. “That’s basically it” says Wayne. “Very simple. The contractor submits the required paperwork to the government on behalf of the homeowner.” “The high performance windows will cost a little more, however, the cost is usually more than offset by the rebates. It’s our experience at Nortech that people are paying thousands of dollars less for the higher efficiency windows that they would have paid for regular dual-pane windows without the program. Homeowners will also continue to save more on energy costs year after year”, says Wayne. “The program is slated to be around for 2018 and 2019. However, funds are limited, so when they run out, it will be over. It’s going to be a busy year for us and my recommendation for homeowners and cottage owners is to take advantage of the program sooner than later.” Nortech Windows, part of family-owned Nortech Home Improvements Inc., has been serving the Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough regions for more than 20 years. Nortech’s goal is to provide the very best in products and customer service. Nortech is registered as a participating contractor in the GreenON windows rebates program. Those Were The Days

“What Am I Bid”"

Going once, ...twice, .. sold to number ninety two. Instinctively, most of the bargain hopefuls in the audience strained their necks to see who “won” the dainty floral vase for the paltry sum of eight dollars. The scene of course is an auction, one of the many sales held each week throughout our area. From tables to tools, cattle to cars and everything in between, if it is for sale then to be sure somewhere an auctioneer is poised to say “what am I bid?” Forget that old myth about scratching your nose or blinking an eye and oops, you have inadvertently bought an ugly yellow feathered lamp shade. Auctioneers are professionals who have learned and honed their trade through years of hard work and training. An auctioneer has the expertise to know the crowd, understand the true value of an item and can readily recognize an interested bidder. “Who will give me five dollars for this floor polisher?” Although the circle of potential bidders hung on every word and followed the auctioneer as if he were the Pied Piper, no one ventured a bid. “Okay, I will throw in a vacuum cleaner, now, who will give me a dollar?” The gathering shuffled their feet but remained silent. A challenging grin crossed the auctioneer’s face and the game was on. “All right, I will add a brand new toilet seat still in the box, who will give me a buck for the lot?” A sheepish “one dollar” came from the floor then two, five and finally after much playful banter, “sold for twelve dollars.” When moving to this area we were in need of a china cabinet and being familiar with auctions decided one weekend to attend a few. There it was the minute we entered a large indoor auction, a china cabinet exactly the width, height and design we had been seeking. The crowd was boistrous but the bidding wasn’t very high; we were very optimistic. Whispering to each other, we decided seventy five dollars would be our highest offer and no more. Bidding began and I stayed quiet until it reached twenty-five and I bid thirty. A heavy set man bid thirty five so I upped it to forty, he readily offered forty five. I recognized him as one of the furniture movers doing a bit of shilling for the auctionhouse so I called his bluff and shook my head indicating no more. It must have worked because when the auctioneer gave his final going, going ...., I bid fifty, the man stayed silent and we had bought ourselves a china cabinet. When we visited Germany every household had oversized, European style, beautifully unique china cabinets. My wife wanted one. A few years ago a local dealer had such an item, sale price $950.00. I offered our $50. china cabinet in trade plus $500.00. We made the deal. Auctions? Been there, done that and loved every minute. Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

Benefits of Choosing a

Real Estate Team While in decades past, buying and selling real estate was often a one-person operation; todays market requires a sharp team of professionals that have extensive experience in multiple disciplines when navigating through what has become a very complex industry. So why not deploy a team versus a single representative when trying to maximize all your potential opportunities, and here are a few reasons to consider. Availability – when it comes to real estate you need to have perfect timing. A singular representative can have limited availability due to other obligations. A team will always have someone on call when the moment is right to strike. If your property suddenly receives a showing request from an out of town buyer, and your representative is not available, you may lose out on a critical showing, and even worse a potential offer. Valuation Process – The first 30 days can be critical on a new listing, and getting it priced accurately means everything to the successful outcome of a real estate transaction. Having a team on your side allows you to have a second opinion to

Since 1994

fully review the valuation and ensure that your home is priced properly from the start. Buyer Pools – Each Sales Representative working on your needs will have a certain number of current Buyers currently hunting in the market. Furthermore, different types of Realtors® can attract different types of Buyers based on a multitude of factors. Why not gain access to as many potential qualified buyers as possible? More Resources – When you hire a team, you get more resources at your disposal and even better, at no additional cost. Everyone has various degrees of experience and expertise. So, it only makes sense to pool them all together and form a complete real estate solution. When you have a team working on your behalf – you increase your chances of seeing success no matter what real estate endeavour your undertaking. Green-Friendly

Metal Roofing & Metal Roof Shingles

When considering the best roofing choice for your home you need to take a few factors into consideration. Your roof should be able to withstand the Canadian climate (hot summers and blistering cold winters) and prevent small animals from entering your residence. Also, you need to find the best roofing quality for the best price. The Advantages of Metal Roofs Metal roof shingles and metal roofs are advantageous to asphalt roofs in several ways. Asphalt roofing is much more susceptible to severe weather conditions and is vulnerable to algae, mildew and moss, which shortens lifespan. Also, asphalt manufacturers dispose of millions of tons of asphalt every year, which raises serious questions about the impact on the environment.

searching for a green roof solution, metal roofs are energy-efficient, often containing recycled content. It may cost you more, but a metal roof will last 3-4 times longer than an asphalt one, and be better for the environment.

Lifestyle Home Products started with installing asphalt roof shingles. Upon realizing that manufacturers often wouldn’t back their warranties, they switched to installing metal roof shingles, which proved to be a much better roofing solution.

Increased Home Value There’s no need to worry about your roof’s aesthetic appeal since metal roof shingles (also known as metal roofing shingles or steel shingles) come in many colours. The exterior is what makes the first impact of your residence, farm or business. Since the value of the building is greatly increased, and with 50 years peace of mind on warranty – it’s a no brainer – metal roofing is the way to go. With the durability, longevity, and lightness of metal shingles, it’s not surprising that the popularity of metal roofs has risen.

“Discovering true peace of mind greatly outweighs everything else. A Lifestyle metal roof has a lifetime warranty, which means that you won’t have to worry about your roof ever again,” says Bill Carroll, President of Lifestyle Home Products. Visit lifestylehomeproducts.ca or contact Lifestyle Home Products at 1-800-465-0593 for a free estimate. You can also visit their showroom and see for yourself why Lifestyle Home Products is a respected supplier of outdoor awnings and metal roofing shingles. Lifestyle also manufactures exterior doors, windows and sunrooms.

More and more home, farm and cottage owners are making the move to environmentally-friendly green roofing products that are lifetime warrantied. Metal roofs have shown fantastic performance under extreme weather. They are lightweight and, as for their longevity, come with a 50-year warranty. If you are

A Little Piece of Heaven in Apsley

“My seeds and roots are in Apsley, Ontario. I have spent my life in the tranquil surroundings of nature on Jack’s Lake. When I first arrived, there were no phones and just 2 TV Channels. While technology has changed, the reason I love it here remains the same today as it was then. We are made as people to commune with nature - here my soul gets its fill of peace and happiness and I am a blessed man.” Andy Assinck Apsley is the main village located in North Kawartha Township. The township is made up of communities Apsley, Big Cedar, Glen Alda, Rose Island, Woodview and part of Burleigh Falls. Surrounded by stunning freshwater lakes including Jack's Lake, Anstruther, Eels Lake and Chandos, to name just a few. Tour this beautiful region by canoe or paddleboard and enjoy nature that will change you. Let the loons serenade you and melt life’s stresses away. You’ll see an array of wildlife here including beavers, great blue heron and osprey. The region is an anglers favorite for bass, pickerel and trout. Your Cottage Season

Checklist The moment you have been dreaming about all winter is here! Along with spring, the time to open the cottage has arrived.

In all the glorious excitement that is the start of cottage season, there are some things you need to plan ahead for. Despite wanting to get there and get into the swing of things, opening the cottage can be a lot of work, happy work, but still work. A checklist will help you to ensure you have all you need, you never know what you might find after a long Canadian winter, a problem with plumbing, lighting or heating, or discovering you’ve left something important behind – you want to be prepared. We know you want to get there and start the process of unwinding; there is something different about the air at the cottage, and the stress level! The more you plan ahead and prepare now, the smoother your opening will go, you’ll be in cottage bliss enjoying a drink on the dock sooner than you think. Use these checklist tips to make the progression a little bit smoother, avoid stress as well as unnecessary costs. Most important tip? Make sure you brought the Keys!

✔ Before flipping the main hydro breaker, turn all of the other breakers off. ✔ Turn on the main, then each breaker one at a time with someone inside for safety. ✔ Don’t turn the hot water heater on yet. ✔ Go back inside and check the lights and use a tester for all of your plugs. Testers are an inexpensive way to keep safe. ✔ Now fire up the water pump and bleed the air from the cold water lines. One tap at a time. Once the hot water tank is full, close the upper valve and flip the breaker on. ✔ Repeat the bleeding process for the hot water taps. ✔ Replace the batteries in the smoke detectors and check the charge of your fire extinguishers.

✔ When you first arrive, do a full perimeter check. Look for fallen trees, hydro lines, missing shingles, damage to windows and siding. Whether your cottage is on piers, blocks or concrete, frost can move things around, so have a good look at your substructure.

✔ If you are waterfront, check your dock system and shoreline.

✔ Do a visual check of water lines, drains and any exposed wiring under the cottage.

✔ Stock up on non-perishable items and cleaning supplies on this first trip – it makes subsequent trips simpler.

✔ Check the stability of all stairs, decks, and railings. Time to go inside.

✔ Prepare and pack up all the ingredients for a slow cooked meal, so all you have to do is plug it in and enjoy the aroma while you work.

✔ When you’re preparing your list of things to take, don’t forget to add a supply of batteries and a tester for your plugs, as well as bug bombs and repellent just in case any little critters have moved in.

✔ Open all of the windows and doors to refresh the air. ✔ Look for any obvious signs of water damage or critter damage. ✔ Connect the water pump and prime it. Connect your dishwasher and washer/ dryer, if you have them. Close all bleeder valves and drainage valves. ✔ To prep your hot water tank – close the bottom drain, open the supply valve and open the pressure release valve near the top. Always make safety a priority!

Need a lift? Access to reliable, public transportation connects people in rural communities with businesses, food, education, jobs, training and healthcare. It also supports families and activities and helps our social lives!

The Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce supports the new three-point Expanded Rural Transportation Plan for the City of Kawartha Lakes. This plan has been drafted by local residents! The plan is based upon a lot of research, ideas being used other communities across the province, and extensive consultation with the public, including survey data, expert advice and even a "rural transportation summit" held in Fenelon Falls last summer. The three-point, detailed plan is fully costed and proposes: 1. expanding the shuttle bus run daily between Fleming College in Lindsay and Peterborough so it can be used by students, workers and for medical appointments alike; 2. running a bus (known as "White Lightening") supported by the Cambers of Commerce and local businesses for people to shop locally; and 3. bringing back the Kawartha Rides transit system of daily, minibus routes City-wide. The plan has a role for everyone - residents, students, government, the private sector, labour, service organizations, and Council - and is truly a community solution to the really, really, hard issue of rural transportation. The plan is now in the implementation stage. It’s all hands on deck! Volunteers are needed to help plan the details. Please call 705.934.2704 or email Jessica (jknot@knfht.ca) to get involved. All aboard! Submitted by Mike Perry, President of The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce

Energy Therapies What are They? How do they Work? Why should I try them? Energy Therapies are a group of modalities whereby the practitioner works with the individual’s energy field to promote better health. Every person has an energy field and it’s influenced by your state of health. When you feel good and take a brisk walk, you heat up, that’s energy, but, conversely, if you are sick, you lack energy. Chakras, or energy fields in the body carry the flow of energy throughout the body utilizing “meridians” much like veins and arteries that pump blood into the body. However, when you have a physical, mental or emotional problem, “blockages” in the energy field can occur making you feel tired,

30

anxious, sick or worse. In my practice, I deal with many clients you are stressed out, overwhelmed, and can’t cope with today’s pressures. And, I do believe, as do many of you, that stress can cause disease and emotional and mental issues. The mind/body connection is strong. Energetic therapies can facilitate the healing process by clearing blocks in the energy fields, repairing and rebalancing the energy so that the body can move to its optimal level of balance where it is able to access its inherent ability to heal itself on all four levels – physically, mentally, emotionally and physically.

There are many different energy modalities including Reiki, Therapeutic touch, Emotion code, Reflexology, Acupuncture and Kinesiology, to name a few. Unlocking the Potential of Food The promotional “Nutrition Month” may have wrapped up for another year across Canada, but organizations such as the Community Care Health & Care Network in the City of Kawartha Lakes stress the potential of food to enhance lives at all times of the year. Eating intelligently not only improves our health, but it can inspire youth, fuel our activities and bring people together in positive ways. Lauren Gogol, Community Care’s Registered Dietitian, enjoys educating Kawartha Lakes residents from all walks of life about healthy eating. “Food is nourishment, but it’s so much more,” Lauren says. “Food can unite us at the dinner table, and is certainly a big focus at special times of the year such as holidays. Food is something you can teach to children to help brighten their future, and it can improve health, prevent disease and keep us well for longer. Food nourishes and inspires us. This is why dietitians love talking about food and believe in its power to enhance lives and improve health.” Throughout the year, Community Care offers a variety of opportunities to learn about healthy eating and cooking. Monthly “Cooking for One” classes let single adults enjoy preparing

nutritious meals. Participants get to improve their cooking skills and sample new recipes, as well as share a meal with new friends and receive nutritional advice from Community Care. In the summer, Lauren presents the “Little Chefs” program for youth. Participants have fun learning about healthy food and they get hand-on cooking experience by preparing snacks and lunches in the program that is offered at several locations. The program is supported by the Optimist Club of Lindsay. Lauren also works with clients of all ages in one-to-one or group settings to teach them about healthy eating and to help them improve food skills. She enjoys speaking with community groups and organizations about ways to unlock food potential. Dietitians such as Lauren are the trusted choice for reliable, lifechanging food and nutrition advice. Principal Residence Sales Starting with the personal tax returns filed for 2016, individuals who sold their principal residence had to report that sale on their tax return on Schedule 3 – Capital Gains (or Losses) for the Year. The principal residence exception eliminates any capital gains from the sale providing that the home was your principal residence during the entire period that you owned it; this schedule was for reporting purposes only. New for your 2017 tax returns, another form must be completed for all principal residence sales. In addition to the Schedule 3, Form T2091(IND) Designation of a property as a Principal Residence by an Individual (Other Than a Personal Trust) must be signed by the taxpayer and filed with the personal tax return. If the home was your principal residence for the entire period you owned it, only page 1 of the form needs to be filled out. No cost of property is required for these individuals. Deemed dispositions need to be reported here as well. A deemed disposition may happen as a result of a change in the use of property, the death of a taxpayer, or becoming non-resident. Failure to report the sale of a principal residence in the year it is sold will result in late-filing penalties and could result in the taxpayer being taxed on the entire capital gain. A property can qualify as a principal residence as long as the taxpayer, their spouse or common-law partner, or any of the taxpayer’s children resided there at some point during the year. There may be exceptions if the property is rented out. Canada Revenue Agency considers the first 1.25 acres of a property as part of the principle residence. There will be a capital gain on the excess property when the principle residence is sold. However, properties larger than 1.25 acres that are not subdividable are an exception. Make sure you don’t miss this important change to your tax return! Your Financial Matters This past winter seemed to drag on, but with Spring finally here our thoughts turn to sprucing up the inside of our homes and getting the gardens and lakefront ready for those relaxing summer days ahead. Spring cleaning also involves our financial matters and it’s a good time to see where things are so the summer can be truly relaxing. Since the start of spring coincides with tax time, this is a good place to start. By now you have probably already filed your 2017 taxes and may know whether you are getting a welcome cheque back from Ottawa or having to write a cheque. Looking back at last year, were you as tax efficient as possible? If you ended up paying more taxes than you should have because of a lack of contributions to your RRSP, perhaps you should look at making monthly contributions starting now. When you receive your tax assessment notice you will also know what your contribution room is for 2018 and this will help you strategize a monthly plan aimed at maximizing that contribution where possible. If you paid tax on investment income, whether simply from interest earned on savings accounts or from securities held in nonregistered accounts, make sure you have maximized your TFSAs. Moving cash from those taxable accounts into your TFSA, if there is contribution room, will help reduce the tax you pay.

Since 1994

For those who have maxed out their RRSPs and TFSAs and feel there is nowhere else to put capital to reduce taxes, take a look at whether you own any permanent life insurance policies. In some cases, you may be able to continue funding such polices and in your annual statements it will indicate the maximum allowed by CRA. Many Canadians have taken out these policies in the past and paid them up in full, not knowing that they may continue moving capital into them. Since the investments in these policies grow and earn income tax free they remain a powerful tool for minimizing taxes, provided there is sufficient capital to move into them. As with all investment and tax planning strategies, it is important to consult your advisor and tax professional and spring is the perfect time to get in front of them before the summer months arrive. Treasures from the Toy Box Each of the stories being shared, along with the toys being represented, come from the Peterborough Museum & Archives Permanent Collection of artifacts. The Great Garloo

During the 1940s and 50s a craze of movie monsters attracted the imaginations of many youngsters. In the early 1960s, the Marx Toy Company created several batteryoperated toy monsters that could move forward, bend and pick up small items. Among the most popular was The Great Garloo.

Clown Artist

In the mid 1800s, tin toys became very popular playtime items. Many had clockworks to operate the toy after being wound-up by a key. In the 1890s, Philip Velmetter of Germany, created this hand-cranked clown artist. After inserting a disc into the bottom, and turning the small handle, the clown would sketch a picture. Different discs produced images of famous people such as Queen Victoria, Napoleon, and the Tsar as well as monkeys and parrots.

Penny Doll

Dolls seem to have been around forever – in fact as early as 2,900 BCE dolls have been made. However, these early “dolls” were not made as toys, but more for religious purposes, they represented gods. By medieval times, dolls were considered toys for play. This Penny doll was made in the late 1700s in a region in Austria known as Grodertal.

Arthur Malet’s Teddy Bear

Who would have thought that this little teddy bear has connections to Hollywood?

34

April 2018 ~ Cottage Country Connection

The bear wasn’t in any movie, however, an actor who played smaller roles in over 100 movies owned him. Arthur Malet appeared in Mary Poppins (as Mr Dawes Jr), Hook (as Tootles), and the voices of many animated characters such as Mr Ages in The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue, as well as the travelling man and Major Domo in Anastasia. When Arthur was a young boy of 6, he cut the bear’s fur thinking that it would grow back just like his own. Disappointed that “Teddy’s” fur didn’t grow back, Arthur then knit him a red and blue wool sweater. Unfortunately, moths enjoyed the sweater and “Teddy’s” paws over the years. Fluffy Slime My 8 year old is constantly talking about slime, can we make some. So I decided that it would be a great activity to do over March Break. So I of course hop onto Pinterest and search for slime recipes and after a quick shopping trip we were off to the slime making races. Ingredients • • • • • •

White Washable Glue – we used Elmer’s (we bought a big jug at Walmart) Foaming Shaving Cream – unscented. (We went to the Dollar Store for this and it wasn’t completely scent free, kids hands smelled a little but wasn’t a huge deal) Baking Soda Food Coloring Saline Solution ( needs to contains both sodium borate and boric acid as ingredients) Bowl, Spoon, Measuring Cups and Spoons

Directions Measure 3-4 heaping cups of shaving cream into a bowl. Add color! We went with blue, but next batch we plan on making an extra big batch for multiple colours Next, add a 1/2 cup of glue to the shaving cream and mix. Add 1/2 tsp of baking soda and mix. Add 1 tablespoon of the saline solution to the mixture & start whipping! Once you get the mixture thoroughly whipped and incorporated, you can pull it out with your hands! If you find it is too sticky add some more saline solution. We saved the slime for a few days in the bowl covered with saran wrap and we were amazed at the different consistency’s it took.

Dragonfly Snacks This is a fun little spring themed snack for kids to take in their lunches, or to take on a picnic; I’ve even seen them used as party favours. All you need is a clothespin (we used wooden), a snack sized plastic zipper seal bag, glue, a pipe cleaner, paint or markers, small googly eyes and some snacks. Fill half of the bag with one snack, and the other half with another – be sure to leave room to twist the bag in the centre. Decorate your clothes pin with fun colours, stickers and sparkles work great too. Slide the centre of the pipe cleaner into the opening of the clothespin and twist together to make antennae; add eyes to the opening end of the clothespin. When done decorating, clamp the clothespin over the twisted center of the snack bag. Voila! Dragonfly snacks to go. Emily Ireland

Dr. Terry’s Zoo Snowdrops are blooming and chipmunks are once again plundering the bird feeders. Spring has arrived! The eastern chipmunks hibernate over winter in burrows which can be more than 11 feet in length with several entrances. Our Mr. Chipmunk has managed to squeeze his suave frame through the top opening of our bird feeder where he sits within protected glory stuffing his cheeks to the extreme. He can barely escape with his mouthful of goodies.

Amigo, our canine Cuban rescue has been our spring training in anticipation of chasing the returning seagulls. We took a tick off Amigo in March and sent to the lab where it was tested for ten different pathogens. Thankfully it was negative. It is advised to test your dog with a 4DX blood test to assure your pet is free of Anaplasmosis, Lyme, Heartworm and Ehrlichia from last summer. Unfortunately Lyme disease is increasing in the human and canine populations. There are a

number of excellent medications to kill ticks quickly before they can regurgitate the Lyme disease into your pet. One product, a single flavoured tablet can protect your amigo for three months. Amigo has retrieved his leash from the front hall and we’re off to find seagulls. Enjoy a safe and healthy spring! Dr. Terry Davidson, Parkhill Animal Hospital, 705 745 4605

3 Things You Can Do to

Calm Your Dog During a Thunderstorm

Crash! Bang! Lots of dogs don't really love loud, unpredictable sounds that they don't understand. Thunderstorms and fireworks tend to be at the top of the list for doggie anxiety triggers. Your dog may pant, tremble, and generally try to hide, often long before the storm arrives. There's no mistaking the signs that your dog is uncomfortable, if not outright terrified, of the thunder, lightning, howling winds, and pouring rain. And although people know the storm will pass, it seems pets may not be able to move past their present fear. So what can you do for a dog that is afraid of thunderstorms? Here are three suggestions on how you can make your pup more comfortable and less anxious during a thunderstorm. 1) Wrap your dog in a Thundershirt Thundershirts feature soft fabric and secure Velcro closures that snug around your pup for added comfort and security. The feeling of tightness holds your dog close and prevents the fur from picking up static electricity during the storm. 2) Provide a cozy place for your pet to bunker down. Sometimes the best thing you can do is give your pup a safe place to lie down and ride out the storm. Look for a space with few or no windows such as a hallway or small laundry area. Pile up some blankets, towels, or pillows to make a bit of a doggie fortress where your pet can lie down in a fairly enclosed space if desired. The closeness helps to provide comfort and getting away from the windows at least removes the lightning from the equation. 3) Encourage a calmer mood with doggie stress relief drops Natural pet care treatments can greatly help in calming your pooch. The natural formula of Rescue Remedy contains five key essences to soothe your dog. The droplets offer stress relief in a variety of situations from thunderstorms to car rides and more. One key idea to keep in mind is not to coddle your pet when the storms come. It's okay to comfort them, pet your dog and spend time together, but don't make the storm out to be a huge deal. Try to avoid saying, "it's okay," and other phrases that acknowledge the power of the storm. When you keep your calm, your dog will be a bit calmer, too.

Exciting Outlook for Spring at the Academy Theatre One harbinger of spring at the Academy is the return of TIFF films! Films on the Scugog, the name for the local TIFF Film Circuit partnership between the Kawartha Art Gallery and the Academy Theatre, officially starts its 3rd season on Tuesday April 10. The first film screening is The Leisure Seeker, featuring renowned stars Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. This film is a delightful combination of comedy overlying a serious situation that has relevance to almost everyone, whether it be care responsibilities for our aging parents, or dealing with senior health care issues of our own. Looking ahead, the second offering from Films on the Scugog will be Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. Watch for news later about the subsequent TIFF screenings each month.

Canadian veteran to be announced soon. Also featured in this show is Rachelle Elie, known for her boundless energy, fearlessness & dynamic stage presence. This comedy event is a joint fundraiser for both the Kawartha Lakes Food Source and the Academy Theatre.

Watch for a delightful night of comedy on April 20. Following the sudden and sad passing of Canada’s superb Mike MacDonald on March 17, we are aiming to present another
