Mike & Miles in the Morning Recently Cottage Country Connection had the pleasure of doing the Country 105 Morning Show with Mike and Miles. We had a fantastic time with these two charming and obviously happy gents, who made the morning a really great time. Catering for Breakfast was brought in from SKH catering and the food was delicious - it was Miles Birthday that day and his Mom also joined us on air to poke fun at the birthday boy. Mike Judson a family man through and through, recently made the move from CHEX TV to the Country 105 Morning Show because he was missing his wife and son. He wanted a job that would give him more time to be the man he wants to be for his family. This career move allows Mike the time he knows is so important with his three year old son and wife Jen. Mike started his career in radio with BOB FM doing the news and also helped to launch Majic 96.7FM. He then took on the role as weather man at CHEX TV. With his love for improv theatre, Mike loves his new job working with co-host Miles Gibney, “It’s more like fun than work!” he says. Miles Gibney has been with Country 105 for 5 years now, and loves working with on-air co-host Mike Judson “It’s a great time, having fun and finding new ways to engage listeners and make them smile” says Gibney. In his younger years Miles worked on

Since 1994

the docks of Buckhorn Yacht Harbour and also with the family business - Buckhorn Honey. Miles is a single, fun loving guy who adores his mom. We often hear many delightful family stories from Miles on air, which makes him so relatable as a member of our community. Always trying to keep the morning show fresh, Miles suggests more of what the listeners enjoy, like trivia and call in games. The audience for the morning show with Mike & Miles ranges in age from 18 to 80 and they reach from Peterborough all the way towards Durham and Belleville and past Haliburton. So if you are in Cottage Country tune in every morning and listen while these entertaining gentleman usher in the day. Also, tune in for Mike and Miles on their new Hot Kickin’ Saturday Night show from 7-11pm! Mike & Miles in the Morning on Country 105 www.Country105.fm (705) 742-8844

Searching for Your Dream Getaway! Have you ever sat around the computer winter, spring, summer or fall and dreamt about owning a get-away from the hectic everyday life? Believe it or not many people go through the process for years before finally choosing to take the plunge of property ownership. One thing they seem to forget to do while they’re "dreaming” at home or work is discuss with each other 3 important things:  The must have things – Like 3 Bedrooms vs 2 Bedrooms or a Small or Large Lake, number of bathrooms etc.  The I’d like to have things – Like a fireplace, lakeview not a river view, updated kitchen, basement etc.  Your Dream Cottage – With Western/Eastern Exposure, Granite kitchen, Garage & Boathouse etc. It’s worth the time to sit down with your partner or co-purchaser and discuss the above items prior to embarking on your search. You may find that you have vast differences in what each of you want. For many, it may be the kitchen or maybe a window seat to sit with your morning brew while enjoying the peace of the water. For others, it may be a garage or workshop or boathouse to protect prize possessions. The secret is to communicate and compromise before you start out on the journey to find the perfect place for family and friends to enjoy for years to come. So many people purchase a property, only to find out that what is their “dream” may not be so for the rest of the family. What they thought would be a long-term getaway loses its charm in a brief period of time, and for some it can end up being sold for barely what was paid for it, simply because no one comes up to enjoy it but you. Remember DREAM – DISCUSS – EXCUTE. This way everyone will be on board and can enjoy the Dream with you! How Do You Know

If Your Roof Will Make It Through The Winter? While you're flipping through the pages of this magazine, you might be sipping a cool drink on your patio as you bask in the summer sun. Thoughts of snow and winter are probably the furthest thing from your mind, and who could blame you? Sometimes, though, it pays to plan ahead especially when it comes to one of the most important aspects of your home: your roof. Naturally, we want the roof of our home to look good since it's often one of the first things we notice about a home. More importantly, our roof provides comfort and shelter from the elements. However, when such an essential structure fails, it is often very costly! The warmer weather is the ideal time to have any necessary repairs taken care of. You don't want to wait until it snows only to discover you have a problem that needs fixing urgently. Examine your roof for buckling, curling, torn or missing shingles. It is also a good idea to check your gutters for granules – this is a sign of compromised shingles. Of particular importance is to inspect your valleys and chimney flashings as they are susceptible to roof leaks. If you see any of the signs noted here, this is likely the right time for you to explore the 'pros and cons' of shingles versus a metal roof. Jennifer Lawson, from Havelock Metal notes, “As consumers become more educated on metal, its popularity grows. Perhaps the biggest benefit of metal is the length of time it lasts – most

Since 1994

metal comes with a warranty typically from 30-50 years. In addition, metal sheds snow easily, withstands high winds, is resistant to fire, mildew and insects, and in many cases can be applied directly over shingles. Not to mention its environmental benefits.” Jennifer goes on to say that, “Metal is available in many different textures, colours and profiles, including steel shingles and architectural panels, so you are sure to find something that suits your home or cottage.” If you find yourself in need of a new roof and want to explore the option of metal, one of Havelock Metal’s knowledgeable team members can help you with all your questions and provide a free quote. So give them a call – as soon as you've finished that drink of course! 705-639-2857 www.HavelockMetal.com Advertisement

Jonathan & I This was the first project I had done with the Property Brothers. Jonathan and I were on the same wave length that day when choosing shirts and had some fun with it. In this episode I renovated a kitchen and bathroom for a growing family as well I solidified my connection with the Property Brothers through quality craftsmanship and positive attitude.

Stoke up the fire its Pizza time! This was the first indoor wood burning pizza oven we incorporated into a high end custom kitchen for a big family that loves to entertain and of course, eat pizza! The pizza oven kit is from Wildwood Ovens & BBQ’s in Los Angeles California. We built walls according to our kitchen design and created the templates for the copper details. The family is well travelled and asked me to create a single stone inlay that would include all the stones they have collected from around the world. After finishing the stonework, I removed one stone to build a mould which was used to create the custom stone inlay. The copper detailing was hand-made by Copperworks in Pickering Ontario for some added wow factor. The cabinetry was built 1 ½” thick with ¼” thick solid maple edging and constructed as large sections on feet similar to standalone furniture. The exterior of the cabinetry is finished with Benjamin Moore Cheating Heart and the interiors are maple with a clear lacquer finish. The section of upper cabinets beside the pizza oven conceals a T.V. that lowers giving you something to watch while you are sitting at the 12’ island.

Built-in Entertainment Unit This entertainment unit was design to become the focal point in this cottage. The small family wanted something that could display art, blend into the existing wall panelling, incorporate the wood burning stove and the wall mounted T.V. without taking up too much valuable floor space. The feature lighting built in to the shelves gives an added design element at night.

Increase Your Home's Value With These 5 Home Improvements Completing remodeling projects and upgrades on your home is not only beneficial for your own use, but it can actually increase your home's value. If you ever decide to sell your home, you will be glad you make some improvements, as you can now sell your home at a higher price. It also entices potential buyers who are looking for certain types of upgrades. Consider these home improvements to increase your home's value. 1. Upgrade to Stainless Steel Appliances When people are looking to buy a home, they don't want to have to purchase appliances on their own. If you can get all new appliances in your kitchen, you will really get the attention of people looking for this type of upgrade. If you're going to replace the appliances, go for stainless steel. This makes your kitchen look modern and updated. Stainless steel goes great with just about any kitchen style and they provide energy-efficient benefits as well. 2. Repair the Roof Some home improvements are not about completely renovating, but making necessary repairs. One area of your home you need to make sure is in tip-top shape is the roof. There is nothing more frustrating than moving into a new home and discovering a major leak during the first big rainstorm. Have your roof inspected thoroughly and make any necessary repairs. Replace damaged shingles or roofing tiles, make sure the membrane is intact, and check the quality of the flashings, gutter, and downspouts. 3. Finish the Basement Another great addition to your home is having an additional space. If you have a basement, consider finishing it to convert it into a room. This gives the home buyer an extra room in the home and prevents them from having to do the work themselves. You

Since 1994

would be surprised by how much more attention your house advertisement gets when you inform people that the basement is all ready to be turned into a playroom, bedroom, or home office. Finish the basement by adding insulation and ventilation, plumbing, and electrical. Complete the walls and flooring so there is minimal work left for the homeowner to do. 4. Build a Patio or Deck If you have extra space outside your home, consider adding a patio or deck. A patio is a great way to provide the future homeowner with a space for entertaining and relaxing place to enjoy their beautiful garden. If you currently have a patio, consider ways to improve it. Perhaps you can section off one side of it and convert it to a sunroom, or add better lighting options and repair the concrete flooring. For a deck, you might want to have it rebuilt with high-quality wood. 5. Add a Swimming Pool or Hot Tub Large backyards are ideal because there is enough room for additions like swimming pools. This is definitely one of the more extensive and expensive home improvements, but is one that can greatly increase the value of your home. It is also something wonderful for you to enjoy with your family. Consider having an in-ground swimming pool built in your backyard. Even a small pool can make a drastic difference in how attractive your home is to buyers. If you don't have the money or space for a pool, adding a hot tub to your patio area is also a great addition. These home improvements not only help you live in a more beautiful, updated home, but they can entice future buyers if you decide to put it on the market.

Tips on Being

Mortgage Savvy Home ownership, for most people, means securing a mortgage. A process which can take time, attention to detail, and for many it equals stress. With so many financial institutions offering a multitude of options, it can be an overwhelming process. There are many private lending institutions looking to assist you in borrowing needs as well. Knowledge is key when shopping around for the option that suits you and your requirements best. It is helpful to know what a lender will look into before you head in to see them, that way there are fewer surprises. When considering an application for a mortgage lenders look at things like location, proximity to a major market, if it is waterfront property – is the lake large or small, access to the property – year round is best, and if there is a paved road is always a plus. Lenders will want to ensure that there is a safe and consistent water source available. If problems arise in regards to accessing a dependable water source the

18

property will be materially impacted as will marketability and value. The property has to be marketable! CMHC changed its rules last year so that it would no longer insure mortgages on second homes. That means you will have to go with a private mortgage insurance company which can provide the necessary coverage if your lender requires it due to the size of your down payment. If you are not putting down at least 20 per cent, you will need mortgage default insurance. Now if you are building a new home or cottage and have hired a builder under a fixed-price contract, and the builder agrees to acquire the lot on your behalf in order to start the build, your down payment can be as little as 5% on a CMHC-insured draw construction mortgage. No matter how you choose to finance your purchase, for the lender it is about whether you can repay the debt. The General Rule of Thumb • the more expensive the lot, the bigger

August - September 2017 ~ Cottage Country Connection

your required down payment will be. • the further away the property is from urban locations, the bigger your down payment. • Zoning is expected to be residential, country residential, or agricultural upon exception for rural properties. • An appraisal is often required, and no value is given to existing structures. • Existing services (water, natural gas, power, septic, phone) make properties more desirable to finance for lenders If building your own home is something you have been thinking about, consider that financing the construction process can often be difficult and time consuming. As licensed mortgage brokers, our job is to remove stress and make it easier for you to realize your dreams. Water Wells When some of us picture a water well, we conjure up romantic images of a quaint old stone structure with a bucket on a line that produces an endless supply of clean, sparkling water – that is if you've never actually owned a water well! Nowadays, wells are far more intricately constructed and the process can be complicated and dangerous if we are not properly informed. Whether you are purchasing a property with a well in place or you're adding a well to your property, it's important to note: You Must Hire a Licensed Contractor Any person or company hired to construct and/or service a water well (including pumping equipment in the well) is required to hold a Well Contractors license. The person performing the work must hold a specific class of well technician license, such as Class 1 or 2 for well construction and Class 4 for pumping equipment installation and service. Learn more here: https://www.ontario.ca/page/well-regulationwell-construction-licensing-technical-bulletin. It is important to check that anyone you hire to perform work on your well or in well-pumping equipment is properly licensed. A list of licensed contractors is available on the Ontario website. The Ontario Groundwater Association (OGWA) is also a good resource to locate a local contractor: (https://ogwa.ca/). Know the Law In Ontario, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) have set out specific laws pertaining to water wells in the province found in the Water Resources Act and the Wells

Since 1994

Regulation. These laws set out minimum requirements for all aspects of well construction including licensing individuals and companies who construct and service wells, reporting well activities (e.g. completing and submitting well records), siting new wells, constructing, maintaining, and abandoning (decommissioning) of wells. These regulations are available on the Ontario website, as well as many technical bulletins and best management practices. A good link to access all of these is: https://www.ontario.ca/page/ wells-your-property Follow the Rules If you are purchasing a property that has an existing well it is recommended that you have the well inspected and yield tested, by a licensed contractor and ask the current owners for a copy of the Well Record. Since you will be responsible to maintain this well you should know what exactly you have before you purchase. Maintain Your Well Maintenance of wells is the responsibility of the well owner. An improperly maintained well could pose physical safety risks such as falls into dug wells or pits, as well as poor water quality due to bacteria and/or contaminants. Research thoroughly, and, if in doubt, contact a licensed contractor, OGWA, or MOECC for assistance so that you can enjoy your delicious well water worry free. G. Purchasing a mattress can be a big investment, but one of the most important considering that you’ll spend on average 1/3 of your life on it. Mattress shopping can be confusing, scary and a daunting task. Here are some tips to make the hunt for the perfect mattress and a good night’s sleep a breeze. Size: Be sure to know what size you’re working with and what will fit in the desired room. Ask about a split box spring (important if you have a staircase to navigate, as standard box springs don’t bend) Test Drive: Mattress shopping can be a bit awkward as it involves the vulnerability of lying down on various mattresses to test for comfort. Be sure to set aside at least an hour or two and spend at least 15 minutes on the mattress you select. It is important to note that many mattresses that contain memory foam such as Tempurpedic or Serta I-Comfort often get softer as the memory foam heats up. Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask your sales associate for some space while you decide. What is a lifestyle base? Well, it’s not a hospital bed, or a bed you’ve seen on infomercials. Lifestyle bases are commonly known as adjustable bases, which are the latest rage. Lifestyle bases allow the user to adjust their head and leg positions which can promote healthy blood flow, reduce symptoms of snoring and help to eliminate symptoms of acid reflux. They offer the comfortable flexibility of being able to adjust yourself to read or watch TV in bed. A lifestyle base can be had for as little as $799.00 for a queen, which is a steal considering you won’t need to purchase a box-spring or bedframe which usually retail for around $350-$450.

Mattress Protection: Don’t skip on a mattress protector. As you sleep, your body gives off heat, excretes fluids and sheds old skin and hair cells, creating an atmosphere inside your mattress and pillows that is warm, humid and rich in decaying organic matter. This is the exact environment where harmful microbes flourish! Your Bed May Be Making You Sick! The average bed contains as many as 10 million dust mites. Dust mite allergens, inside our mattress and pillows, have been identified as the major trigger of asthma attacks and many allergic reactions. Today as I was packing for our family vacation I thought about all the family vacations that my parents had taken us on. Every summer, they’d dig out the tents, sleeping bags and camping gear from the garage. Coolers, suitcases and first aid kits were carefully packed and repacked, to ensure that we children stayed content and healthy on our summer journey. Our old aluminum boat would be stuffed full of fishing rods, tackle boxes and life jackets then tightly tarped to ensure that everything stayed put as we drove across miles and miles of highways across Canada. With the chaos of having three children and a dog running around while they packed, my parents diligently would have everything ready to go and we eventually would hit the road. Fast forward thirty years and here I am looking for my son’s goggles as I grab Band-Aids and locate swim trunks and sunscreen. As I carefully count out the number of t-shirts and shorts needed and make sure that hats and rain coats are also in the bag, I now thoroughly appreciate all the time, effort, planning and organization that went into making summer break so exciting and magical for my brothers and I. As a child, I only remember getting to our campsite and chasing fireflies and skipping rocks off the dock. I remember exploring the forests that would surround our campsite and reappear an hour later to find the tents set and the gear unpacked. I remember snuggling in our sleeping bags with the sounds of the night forest surrounding us as my parents would continue to set up a camp kitchen and wash dishes in the warm light of the lantern. Now as I gather the final items, my children will never know that I stayed up until midnight trying to finish off emails and last-minute work items so that I could give them my undivided attention while we’re away. They don’t know that when they were nestled in their beds, their father gathered the camping chairs and the life jackets and the suitcases and repacked the car twice to make sure that everything fit in and that nothing was missed. They’ll only have their happy memories of swimming to the raft and jumping off the dock. And, when we snuggle under star filled skies, I won’t think once about the packing or the planning, I’ll be thinking about the smile the kids will have when they see the bag of marshmallows that I almost forgot but tossed quickly into the car so that their toothy grins will delight in a feast of s’mores around the campfire. Discovering Cottage Country

By Nick Wolochatiuk

In my grade six social studies text I was spellbound by the fluid lines of canoes that appeared in the line drawings of C.W. Jeffries. The canoe travels of Champlain, the Jesuits and les Voyageurs enthralled me. I heard that Boy Scouts were taught how to paddle a canoe.

floatplane was tugging at its mooring buoy. I wanted to photograph it, but I didn’t have a telephoto lens. It was then I caught sight of a canoe resting on the Austin Airways dock.

“Canoeing! That’s for me!”

The pilot was impressed that I knew what kind of plane it was, so he believed me when I said, “Sure, of course I know how to canoe.” The stiff wind took me and the borrowed canoe straight out to the plane – and beyond, far beyond. The canoeing lesson I was given for the next hour was administered by the School of Hard Knocks. Trial and Error were my demanding teachers. I had not forgotten what I had not learned at scout camp. Did I get my picture? No. I was too busy wrestling with the canoe that was challenging me like an unbroken bronco. That said, for the first time I had paddled a canoe and eventually I managed to make it go where I wanted it to go!

I thought. To become a scout, I had to give up three of the best years of my life in the purgatory of being just a cub. Finally, I became a scout. At summer camp, they promised to teach me how to paddle a canoe. On the third morning of camp, canoeing instruction was on the menu. I ran to the waterfront area to see the canoes. There were twenty of us and ten of them, all tied bow to stern, in an orderly line, bobbing against the sandy shoreline. A paddle was thrust into my eager hands. This was it! I was going to paddle comme un homme du nord! Not so! It did not happen. All we did was thrash about in a merrygo-round of canoes tied bow to stern, bow to stern…Round and round we went until we were all exhausted. Heartbroken at not being taught how to paddle, I quit being a scout as soon as the bus returned to Toronto. Ten years later, on Sudbury’s Ramsey Lake, my next canoeing opportunity came to me. A very rare Noorduyn Norseman

“Can I borrow your canoe so I can photograph CF-GSR, the Norseman?” I asked.

Q: Why are my petunias light coloured and lanky? A: If foliage of your petunias is light green and/or the blooms are lackluster in colour, you are under fertilizing. Petunias require weekly fertilization to maintain vigour and brightness. Use an all purpose fertilizer at full strength. Ensure that your petunias have at least 6 hours of strong sunlight in their chosen location. To prevent lanky petunias, give your plants a “hair cut. Cut them by 1/3 and new growth will be thicker and lush. Q: Why do my hanging baskets dry out so quickly? A: Encased in a hanging Basket is a somewhat unnatural way to grow plants. When the summer really heats up, they are like a chicken in a rotisserie: heat swirls all around. Watering consistently and thoroughly is the best protection against poor performance. Ensure your baskets have water before they head into the hottest part of each day. Water until the basket feels heavy with water weight and until water runs out the drainage holes. Rain water, unless it rains very hard for a full day, is not sufficient as even moderate rain bounces off the foliage.

Since 1994

Q: When perennials are finished blooming, what do I do? A: Trim off spent blooms and yellowing foliage and remove sun burnt leaves. This will keep your garden tidy and attractive. Often when blooms are removed, a second flush of bloom will surprise you. Trim perennials for height if the specimen becomes floppy or stake it up. Q: Why are some plants covered in white mould? What do I do? A: This is called Powdery Mildew. A foliar spray is available but will not be effective if the entire plant is now dusted with white. If an annual plant, pull it out or if a perennial plant, cut it down to soil level. In both situations, scrape off the top layer of soil where the plant was. Making A Grand Entrance When photographing the Rapin’s home, the first order of business was to be invited to relax in their front sunroom space. The Rapin’s beautiful sunroom was photographed as part of Lifestyle Home Products’ 150th Great Canadian Sunroom Celebration. Below, Eckhart and Doris Rapin hold up Canada pillows. When Doris and Eckhart Rapin thought about a social place to enjoy a cup of coffee, they envisioned sitting at the front of their property. The couple already had a sunroom enclosure on the back of their spacious home. However, their sunroom entry would create a new, welcoming space for visitors and friends. “Situating a sunroom at the front creates a wonderful welcome to your home,” says Doris. Their new sunroom serves as a kind of elegant front porch protected from the elements at all times of the year. The Rapins are happy to invite friends or neighbours to step into their favorite room at any time of the day. “It’s so easy to sit here because it’s at the front of the house,” says Eckhart. Doris adds, “People like to use it as much as we do. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a cup of coffee, have a glass of wine, or enjoy a conversation.” Features of the Lifestyle sunroom include high performance Low E glass to reduce the sun’s heat gain in summer months

and increase the R-value in winter months. The insulation value is suited for harsh Canadian climates. Lifestyle’s walls of glass create optimum panoramic views versus a conventional stick built renovation with spans of wall and smaller windows. Doris and Eckhart saw Lifestyle Home Products at the National Home Show in Toronto. They were pleased to find that Canada’s leading sunroom manufacturer was based in Peterborough. “It was important to us that Lifestyle was based in the area with all parts Canadian-made in Peterborough. We like supporting the local economy.” She adds, “From start to finish it was a great process. We absolutely love our new sunroom by Lifestyle.” Contact Lifestyle Home Products for a free quote at 1-800-465-0593 or LifestyleHomeProducts.ca. More Common Than You Think Black mold can be a scary and dangerous thing. It sneaks up in places that we can sometimes neglect in our daily cleaning routines, and it is more common than you think. Black mold can cause an allergic reactions, headaches, nausea, rashes and chronic coughing. Plus it poses risk to your home or cottage as well. Black mold grows in damp areas like your bathrooms and basements. Best prevention is allowing air flow and controlling the humidity in your home. If humidity is something you battle regularly pick up an inexpensive humidistat. You want to keep humidity levels between 35% and 50%. Make use of a dehumidifier if it becomes over 50% and keep the air moving, after you have treated the mold.

Since 1994

If treating the mold yourself, always wear a respirator, gloves, and long sleeves. Bleach is a great cleaner for this, but it doesn’t always eliminate the mold. You can find a number of good products on the market designed specifically for black mold, and they are available at most hardware stores. With the damp spring that we just had, there is a larger risk than normal, so stay prepared, and know what to look for. Take your time and do a thorough inspection of your home or cottage, it’s your family’s health you are dealing with.

Breathe easy, stay healthy and enjoy your summer. By Dave Linkert Site Supervisor Marshall Homes Port 32 ccc.contactorsconer@gmail.com

Higher Education Institutions Putting Cottage Country on The Map

Here in stunning cottage country, we are extremely fortunate that our community offers world-class educational opportunities, right on our very own doorstep. Peterborough is home to Trent University – one of Canada's top universities and the #1 undergraduate university in Ontario for six years running! Trent’s Symons Campus boasts award-winning architecture, nestled on the banks of the beautiful Otonabee River. Trent draws students from all over the world due to its reputation for inclusivity and its unique approach to personal development through its supportive and collaborative learning environment.

named after the Scottish inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming who first arrived in Peterborough in 1845 when he stayed with his friend Dr. John Hutchinson. The college offers 115 full-time programs in Art, Design and Heritage, Business, Environmental and Natural Resources Sciences, General Arts and Sciences, Health and Wellness, Justice and Community Development, Trades and Technology and Continuing Education.

Trent was also the first university in Canada to establish an academic department completely dedicated to the study of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous knowledge. In June, to coincide with National Aboriginal Day, the University announced a significant addition to its 48-year history instilling Indigenous reconciliation in the institution’s every day work with the creation of the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies – named in honour of a young Anishinaabe boy who ran away from a Residential School in the 60s and subsequently died.

Three of its four campuses are located here in cottage country (Lindsay, Peterborough, and Haliburton). The college has been growing since it first opened its doors in 1967, and today the Sutherland and Frost campuses in Peterborough and Lindsay continue to implement further improvements. Both are undertaking two major renovation projects this year to improve classrooms, labs, and social spaces. The changes are expected to be completed in April of 2018.

Cottage country is also home to Fleming College, which was

This year Fleming College signed a 2 + 2 diploma-degree pathway agreement with Queen's University making it possible for eligible graduates of Fleming’s Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees certificate program (PHS) to pursue a Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree (Honours) at Queen’s. As noted by Sandra Dupret, Dean of the School of General Arts and Sciences, “This is a ground-breaking agreement for Fleming College and it is a definite advantage for our graduates.” With a proven track record of success, both of these institutions have certainly put cottage country on the map as a leader in the provision of world class educational facilities. How to

Tow like a Pro with Jay Poole

Often times the difference between success and failure in water sports has nothing to do with the person in the water and everything to do with who is behind the wheel of the boat. With some simple tips and tricks you can drive like a pro and make everyone behind the boat look and perform better. Keep it Straight. Unless you are towing a tube when you drive for water sports it is easiest to perform behind the boat if it is headed in a straight line. If the boat is turning slightly it can cause the rope to pull harder on one side than the other and cause the wake to be lop sided making it more difficult to cross. The key to driving in straight lines is using fixed points on the shore that you can use as a guide to drive towards. Pick one on either end of your course and when you complete a turn point the bow at your guide point and drive straight for it. I often use large white pines or boathouses that stand out this ensures that you can keep everything perfect and smooth behind the boat. An extra pro tip if you have a mirror on the boat you can monitor both points simultaneously and see how straight your pass is in the mirror as your wake draws a line that should point to the guide point behind you. Smooth and Steady. The next challenge is keeping a steady speed. Even with new boats that have the assistance of cruise control it is

important to make smooth and fine adjustments on the throttle a good skier or boarder can feel the difference of a half Mile per hour behind the boat. The key to keeping consistent speed is all about how you hold the throttle. We take for granted how good we are at keeping speed in our cars but that is a learned skill bracing our foot against the floor and the peddle to make fine adjustments. The concept can be transferred directly to the boat instead of using your shoulder, arm and hand to adjust the throttle. Try bracing your elbow and forearm against the side of the boat and make the throttle adjustment with only your wrist and fingers. This gives you a much more finite control of adjustment and allows you to control the speed with much more accuracy. A pro tip above and beyond includes adding the idea of anticipation to the mix where you add a small amount of throttle while your rider is edging to keep the speed steady and consistent. Keep Calm. Perhaps the most important thing about being a pro driver is what happens after your rider falls. Often people’s instinct when someone falls behind the boat is to immediately turn around to get them keeping the boat at ski speed. That is the absolute worst thing you can do! By turning the boat at high speed you send rollers up and down the course that you are using which makes it rough for the skier. You are also approaching a fallen rider at speed in close proximity and you are losing visibility of everything around you as you turn at high speeds. When your rider falls the proper way to react is to keep the boat driving straight in the current boat path, slow down all the way to idle then make a tight turn within your own wakes and idle back to your fallen participant. It seems like with all this idling it would take much longer to retrieve you skier however because you are traveling shorter distances and have to circle around your skier at idle anyways, often times this is a much faster and safer way to pick up a fallen rider. This is also the most responsible way to ensure that you are keeping everyone around you happy. By limiting high speed erratic turns you are keeping all wakes headed in one direction which helps to keep everyone on the lake happy. Like everything else in life practice makes perfect so take these pro tips and get out on the lake and try them the more time you have behind the wheel the better tow boat driver you will become. It’s a DIRTY JOB but someone has to do it! As we come into August we try to pack in as much summer fun as we can. We do not want to think about the work involved in closing up the cottage or preparing our home for the winter. One thing not usually on the top of most people’s to-do-list is the maintenance of their septic system – out of sight, out of mind – that is until there is trouble. Ideally you should have your tank pumped and inspected every two years. This is important in order to avoid clogging of your leaching bed. Neglecting your waste removal system can lead to major damage, not only to the system but to the surrounding land as well resulting in unnecessary expenses and also leaving a negative impact on the environment. Luckily, North Kawartha Disposal specializes in both liquid and dry waste disposal and is a company which prides itself on being environmentally responsible. This family-run business provides complete septic services for commercial and industrial clients, including 24/7 emergency service, 365 days a year. Based in Young’s Point, North Kawartha Disposal service the surrounding areas of Lakefield, Buckhorn, Burleigh Falls, Young’s Point, Peterborough, Bridgenorth and Apsley. Whether it’s home, cottage or business North Kawartha Disposal will provide fast, efficient service and the professional who comes to help you is a licensed septic installer. This means they will take the time to educate and inform each customer on their individual septic filtration systems. Even though we do not want to admit it summer will be over before we know it, so why not make sure that you cross something off your list for next year – get your tank pumped and inspected! Those Were The Days

“My Pet Peeve”

Every boy wants a pet. I was no different. Anything, preferably a dog, maybe a rabbit or hamster, a living thing to nurture and play with, a pet to call my own. I was ten years old in 1944, a year when everything was rationed and with seven kids in our family needless to say there were never any scraps left over after meals to feed a pet. Rabbits were completely out of the question because Dad used to go hunting every Saturday morning for cottontails or jackrabbits to put meat on our Sunday dinner table so it appeared I would go through my early years without a pet. Notice I never mentioned a cat, unfortunately cats had not even crossed my mind after all, cats are docile animals, somewhat lazy with piercing eyes that never blink making one wonder if you are studying the cat or the cat is analysing you. Cats are warm and cuddly a perfect pet for someone more mature as we found out when we did bring a cat into our family years later. I was sitting on the grass looking for four leaf clovers when out of no where a dog appeared. He wasn’t a very big dog, there were large bare patches on the dog’s back, most of it’s yellowish hair was gone, in some parts even to the skin. The little dog’s head was bowed and the sorrowful, downtrodden look he gave me melted my heart. If this poor waif puppy had no home and I had no pet well, both problems solved. I played with my “new” dog most of the afternoon teaching him to shake a paw and I could see “Judgy”, that is what I named him, was relaxed and comfortable with me. We had a routine in our house that never varied, Dad would come home from work at four forty five, kiss Mom, wash up and we sat for dinner at precisely five o’clock but today Dad did not go into the house, instead he came directly to me. “Whose dog is that?” he asked. “Mine,” I blurted with a smile that covered my face. Dad tried nicely and politely to explain why I could not keep the dog giving the standard reasons but when I strongly objected Dad flatly and alarmingly said the dog had the mange, a highly contagious desease and he physically shooed the dog away. Dinner was late that day, I was hustled into the house and straight into the bathtub, even to this day I can still feel the harsh brush scouring my hands, face, hair, every part of my body leaving red marks. The water was emptied down the drain and the scrubbing began again and again until my parents thought optimistically and hopefully they had erased any remnants of the mites that cause mange. I never got the mange or a pet, but I sure did learn a lesson. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

History & Horses John W. McLean (my grandfather) holding a prized stallion. Taken Ops Township in 1930's

What would it be like to step back in time, as horse fanciers, to experience Canada’s Confederation on July 1, 1867. Certainly we can assume that in 1867 everyone had a relationship with horses. My mother was born in 1923 and although that was 56 years after Confederation it was still a time when almost everyone had a relationship with a horse. She was born Leona Marie Lang and although never a horsewoman, she did drive the team of horses on hay wagons, recalls wonderful stories of her future husband (John S. McLean shown driving team on sleigh) coming to visit her travelling the 19 kilometers from Janetville to Bethany, using horses! Her stories include the dependence of her father on his horses to plough the land, take the family to town to shop at a time when travel depended on the ability to harness or saddle a horse to get where you wanted to go. It is fascinating to hear her stories of how her mother was terrified of horses (but still drove the buggy when needed to go pick berries). Although everyone had a relationship

Since 1994

with horses, there were those who were deeply excited when the first motorized vehicles were available. It is estimated there were over one million cars in Canada by 1929. And so it is, only one hundred and fifty years ago, horses were a part of everyday life. But as we fantasize over the movies and television shows that portray this time in history to be simpler and romantic, we can also take it from those seniors who lived during that era that it takes a lot longer to harness and hitch a horse than it does to slip into your car and turn over the engine! Interesting how the use of the horse has changed over the past 150 years but also noteworthy how the seemingly

spiritual connection bringing horses and humans together remains constant. Take some time this summer to celebrate Canada’s Confederation by visiting a living history museum and see for yourself the reflection of horses in our history. Dr. Terry’s Zoo A month has sailed past since the arrival of Sunshine our stray cat that gifted us with 3 kittens. At 5 weeks the bundles of fluff have already earned their ninja papers as they climb and investigate everything in sight including pant legs. Ouch! Spinnaker loves buttered toast. Dogs have 1700 taste buds compared to 9000 in humans. A dog’s taste buds are concentrated around the tip of his tongue so once the food is in his mouth taste matters little. It’s all about the smell. Dogs have 125 million sensory cells in their noses compared to humans with 5 - 10 million cells. This equates to thousands of times more scent than humans can detect. That is why the city police dog is so good at sniffing out chicken strips in our office when he’s not tracking down criminals. Spinnaker is a specialist at sniffing out butter. Margarine is a no go! We once found a slice of toast buried in our chesterfield that did not meet the palate sensibilities of Dara, our Golden. Her motto was “More butter please”. A dog’s taste is limited to sweet, sour, bitter and salty. A dog’s indiscriminate palate can lead him to the vet’s office. When he smells something with the flavour of food he might deem it edible. We did surgery on a Golden that ate a baby soother, which became lodged in the intestine causing necrosis of the surrounding tissue. The surgery was a success. The moral of the story is to prevent your dog from gaining access to harmful objects. My father’s hearing aid made a great chew toy for his Schnauzer but luckily it wasn’t ingested. Spinnaker wishes you a wonderful day. May every morning greet you with buttered toast! Dr. Terry Davidson, Parkhill Animal Hospital, 705 745 4605 Advertisement

Bel is Still Missing Since July 4th Should Your Family Buy a Furry Friend? South of Bancroft Most families choose to add a furry friend to their home at some point. It's no surprise, really. There are a number of benefits to owning a pet, but adopting an animal is also a huge responsibility. If you've been thinking about buying a ferret, there are a few things that you need to know before you bring this lovable creature into your home. First off, ferrets offer a wonderful way to teach your child responsibility. If you've been worried that your youngster doesn't know much about being responsible for something, having to care for a pet can help. Keep in mind, though, that you'll be the one who ultimately has to care for your pet. If your child goes out of town, becomes bored with caring for your pet, or simply is unable to take care of your ferret, you'll have to be the one to care for it. It's also important to consider how much time you're able to devote to your ferret. Ferrets are lovable creatures, but they also must be monitored when they're not in their cages. Ferrets are notorious for stealing small items and toys and hiding them around the house, but they can also scratch up linoleum or tear up your carpet. While you might enjoy cuddling with your ferret, remember that if you plan to let it out of the cage, you'll need to keep an eye on it.

STILL MISSING since July 4th from L'Amable, a 10-minute drive south of Bancroft. Bel's color is white and beige. Her weight is approximately 15 pounds. Bel has lots of freckles on her belly and she does not have a lot of hair. If she is still wearing her pink/ purple collar, the owner's cell number is inside. Bel is from cottage country and could have traveled a good distance by now. Perhaps someone has picked her up and is keeping her safe. If you see Bel or have any information, please telephone 613-334-8147 or 613-332-1396. She is greatly missed by her family.

Ferrets can be litter-trained, but this is something that you'll need to work on. Ferrets tend to relieve themselves in corners, so most ferret litter boxes are designed to be placed in a corner. You'll have to change the litter at least once a day to prevent smells from permeating your home. If you aren't willing to work with your ferret about littertraining, you can expect accidents throughout your home and in its cage. Finally, remember that finding a veterinarian who cares for ferrets can be difficult. Not all vets are trained to care for ferrets, so you'll need to find an exotic animal vet you trust. Ferrets still need regular checkups, so make sure that you know where you'll take it for health care before you adopt your pet.

What Worrying Is Worry. Stress. Anxiety. These are words that people are acquainted all too well with. When we worry, become stressed, or allow anxiety to build up within us, we are allowing negative emotions such as fear to control our thoughts and eventually our behaviors. Worry comes from our fear of not knowing and the fact that we might not be able to control the outcome of certain things. We then play scenarios in our minds, like the "What if" game, to try and gain some feeling of control or knowledge of what the outcome will be. Unfortunately, worrying too much can cause physical and psychological health issues making it imperative that we learn some alternatives to worrying. When we worry, it can begin to consume us to the point that our daily habits begin to change. Some people will not eat while others will overeat for comfort. Relationships are affected. We can lash out because we are frustrated about a situation that we are uncertain about. We can also retreat into ourselves, neglecting the relationships of friends and family. Sleeping can become difficult because we have too much on our minds. With lack of sleep or a preoccupation with our thoughts, our job performance can decline because we are not really present. As we try to cope, negative habits can begin to build, such as cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and abusing drugs. Eventually, if not controlled or handled in a positive way, worrying can turn into anxiety and cause serious problems to our health. Some side effects of worrying are dizziness, fatigue, headaches, inability to concentrate, irritability, muscle aches and tension, nausea, trembling. These can then lead to a poor immune system, digestive disorders, short-term memory loss, premature coronary artery disease, and heart attacks. Psychologically, worrying can lead to depression, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety disorders. It is important to understand what worrying is and how it can affect us from the small things and build into larger things. It is also equally important to understand how to handle or avoid worrying. Some practical things to do would be exercising on a regular basis, eating a well-balanced diet, avoiding caffeine and other stimulants, and learning to relax and meditate. If we find ourselves worrying, it is important to talk to a doctor or see a professional such as a psychologist to help us talk through our worrying and find a solution to it. Worrying is a fear of the unknown. Although we may think the fear is realistic, it is not because it is based on what we think not what will really happen. It can destroy our health and create more problems for us in the long run. A great prayer to remember when you feel yourself start to worry is, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." If we can remember that, we may start to worry less and enjoy life more!

Youth Grief Support

Community Care Health & Care Network The loss of a loved one is life-altering at any time and can be especially challenging for young people who experience the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent or close friend. Local youth who have been through such experiences can be assured of assistance at a trying time, thanks to recent generous support from the Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group. The company's employee giving program recently presented $25,000 to the Community Care Health & Care Network's "Kids Grieve Too" program. What is Energy Healing? This emerging form of complementary and alternative medicine is not a modern concept or approach. The origins are found throughout the ancient world. Early medical practitioners believed that when the energy within the body was out of balance, people became ill. In Asian countries, medical people felt the only way to a healthy body was in correcting this imbalance. China and Japan, for example, developed a medical system based upon energy levels within the body.

By Moira Gale

We are extremely fortunate to have an abundance of clean, fresh water here in cottage country. It's easy to take it for granted and assume that since our water looks good when it comes through our taps then it must be safe. Most of the time it is, however, if you live in a rural area and are on a well or have a cistern, or even if you live in an older home or cottage, it's important to be aware of some of the potential dangers associated with drinking water. It doesn't matter how pure or clean the source is, if you are using rusty pipes to transport water to your tap not only do you risk losing water through eventual corrosion of the pipes but you are also putting your health at risk. Please seek the advice of an expert to ensure that your pipes are in good repair, and take some precautionary measures by choosing an appropriate method of water treatment to ensure your family's safety. If you are thinking of installing a water filtration system it is a good idea to get in touch with your local health department's environmental group first. As a purification system, Reverse Osmosis is a popular choice nowadays - one of the reasons being that it has low energy requirements. It will remove nitrate, sodium, sulphate, and chloride from water, all of which can cause serious health problems, for example, high blood pressure as a result of the presence of too much sodium. Chlorination will treat bacteria, parasites, and viruses, as well as remove iron bacteria which can cause slime in toilet tanks and iron staining. Filtration can remove the rotten-egg smell and taste produced by sulphate reducing bacteria. It can also remove iron or manganese which causes rusty black stains on fixtures and laundry.

Yet, the belief in the role of energy is not restricted to the physical. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have always perceived this energy (Chi), as having a holistic impact. In other words, the quality and amount of energy found circulating within your body affects your emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. It is not restricted to your physical health. Different Energy Healing Modalities: • Reiki • Reflexology • Therapeutic Touch • Acupuncture • Biofield Energy • Shamanic Work • Emotion Code/Body Code • Emotional Freedom Technique • QiGong • Polarity Work • Body Talk • Chakra Balancing What can you expect from an Energy Treatment? The words "heal" and "whole" both come from the same root word. When you participate in an energy treatment you are allowing yourself to become whole. What this often looks like is relaxation, pain relief, fast recovery from surgery or injury, or getting well. It also may be relief from life traumas and emotional pain. Energy work opens, balances, and connects the body's energy centers. By Lynne Anne Hill, Energy Practitioner – 705-872-8357

With many other methods available in addition to the above, it pays to talk to an expert to find out which is the best water treatment for your household. If you have any immediate concerns take a sample of water to your local public health laboratory as soon as possible.

Voluntary – you must apply before CRA has caught you ii. Complete and Accurate – if you leave out or lie about any information in your application, CRA may reinstate penalties or prosecute you iii. Penalty – there must be a penalty to be waived, otherwise just file as usual iv. One Year Overdue – in most cases the information being disclosed must be over one year old With the aid of an accountant or tax lawyer it is possible to file an anonymous VDP application to determine whether CRA is likely to accept the disclosure. Moving to Cottage Country Two factors are behind the trend of mature Ontarians making the move from their city dwellings to the peace and tranquility of a lakefront property. One is simply a demographic reality and the other is the explosion in urban property prices, especially around Toronto and Hamilton. For some that have not yet retired there is an opportunity to tap into their increased home equity and to borrow for a place in cottage country. Yet, the majority of individuals looking at making this transition are those that have decided to use retirement as the springboard to country happiness.

surplus left in the bank, do some careful future cash flow planning. Take stock of what your retirement nest egg now looks like and how many years you can feasibly finance the retirement lifestyle you have now chosen. If there are expected shortfalls down the road and you are still able to generate income, consider finding a job in the area you are moving to or look for home-based employment solutions. Remember, moving from the city to the country is a lifestyle decision, aimed at improving your quality of life. Don’t let financial worries creep in to steal that quality away.

There are definitely health, lifestyle and social considerations in making this decision, but individuals and couples also have to be aware of the financial issues. First and foremost, is this new lifestyle affordable? How do property taxes, utility expenses and property upkeep costs compare to what you were used to in your primary home? For those looking to just add a cottage property to their lifestyle assets, there is a doubling up of costs. And don’t forget to start keeping your receipts and invoices for any major work done to your cottage as these will be important down the road when it comes time to sell or gift the cottage.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) has recently released a report focused on helping businesses develop such strategies to help reduce health care costs and employee absenteeism. While most employers (81% reported) believed it was important to support their staff with mental wellness, only 35% of small business, 65% of mediumsized business and 76% of large business had mental health strategies. The Mental Health Commission of Canada finds that the cost of mental health to the economy is $50 billion per year. The challenge with mental health is that it can be an intimidating topic for employers and employees. In response to the gap, the OCC has developed a toolkit based on three principles: 1. Setting Expectations – Creating a mentally healthy workplace is a journey and employers do not need to have all the answers. 2. Creating a Supportive Environment – Leadership, from not only management but employees themselves, is needed to create a supportive environment where everyone can feel empowered by the focus on mental wellness. 3. Maintaining the Conversation – Businesses are encouraged to regularly assess if they are sticking with their mission on mental wellness. The local Canadian Mental Health AssociationHaliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge sees over 5,000 clients every year and receives over 1,000 phone calls each month. A recent Canadian Mental Health Association survey found that the top factors employed Canadians believe need to be addressed to improve mental health in their workplace are: Work overload/demands, Challenges with work-life balance, A lack of trust in leadership, A lack of transparency and honesty, A lack of support/tools. www.peterboroughchamber.ca

KIA tops J.D. Power’s Initial Quality ranking for 2nd Straight Year! Continuing a multi-year string of quality and reliability awards and accolades, J.D. Power’s 2017 Initial Quality Study (IQS) today recognized KIA Motors as the highestranking nameplate in the United States for the second year in a row. This marks the best nameplate performance within the last 20 years of the study, driven by five segment awards – the most of any nameplate – for the Soul (Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle), Forte (Cerato) (Compact Car), Cadenza (Large Car), Niro (Small SUV) and Sorento (Midsize SUV). The KIA Soul took home an IQS award for the third consecutive year while KIA’s two newest models, Cadenza and Niro, were outstanding performers in their first model year, with the KIA Cadenza earning the top score among all models ranked in the study. Together with the Optima and Sportage, each of the seven award eligible KIA models included in the 2017 IQS study finished first or second in their respective categories. “When KIA beat out the entire industry in last year’s J.D. Flower Prints Making prints using nature is always something fun to do. Collecting all of ‘natures paintbrushes’ can add the adventure and exploration of tracking the perfect print-maker down. This time we didn’t head to nature, though generally that would be my direction. We instead bought some flowers that were discounted at the grocery store, we noticed them while in line to pay. We picked flowers that had lots of ruffled layers, ones we thought would make an interesting print. At home we got out the paint and trays and clipped the flower stems shorter to provide little hands with easy to use stem handles. Dip the flower gently in the paint and press onto paper. The trick is to get a light layer of paint on the petals, otherwise you end up with a mushy blob that doesn’t resemble a flower. Lots of trial and error, but hours of fun! When you are done you can also gently rinse the flowers under cool water and place them in a vase for further enjoyment! Emily Ireland

for Kids in Cottage Country There is nothing young children love more than being able to run 'wild' in wide open spaces, to be able to set forth on grand adventures and to embark upon exciting outdoor explorations! And with the opportunity to visit farms, go horse riding, kayaking or canoeing, to observe wildlife in its natural habitat, or even just ride their bikes on our rugged trails, we think we've got the perfect ingredients for a childhood paradise right here in cottage country. Most families living in this region will undoubtedly agree that raising kids here is a dream come true.

as a trip to the Haliburton Wolf Centre, outdoor education centres, camp sites galore, zoos, free splash pads, beaches, farmers markets, and historic sites which provide interactive learning for kids. Many farms have year-round activities on offer for children to participate in and get active while learning. The list of fun stuff for children to do in cottage country is seemingly endless! Be sure to watch our Kids Events listings and take a look at our Hot List of Attractions and Destinations to find out what's going on in the area for kids.

As we know, having the opportunity to move about freely creates more confidence in our children, and, of course, being in the fresh air and sunshine provides the obvious added health rewards. The overall benefits of being close to nature are becoming clearer, and studies have shown that not only does spending time in green spaces result in lower levels of stress and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, but it can actually improve cognition for children with attention deficits. We're already aware of the benefits of fresh air and exercise for physical health and with more and more diagnoses of mental illness being made nowadays, it's comforting to know that living here can provide parents with a balanced, preventative lifestyle and a completely natural way of maintaining their kids' overall good health. Our region has so many exciting and accessible opportunities for fun learning experiences. There are caves to explore, Alpaca Farms to visit, unique outings such

Buckhorn Fine Art Festival

Celebrates 40 Years! The Buckhorn Fine Art Festival is 40 years old! In March of 1978 a team of dedicated volunteers came up with the idea of having a summer art show as a fundraiser for the brand new Buckhorn Community Centre. Along with other fundraising efforts, the hope was that a local art show might provide significant relief to the Centre’s financial commitments and operating costs. The ‘Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival was born. The cooperative spirit displayed over the last 40 years has endured. Hundreds of volunteers continue to make the Festival part of their summer routine. The success of the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival continues due to the dedication of these fine people. 2017 also marks the 150th Confederation of Canada and we are proud to be commemorating this milestone with our special exhibit Oh Canada Our True North! Opening Night Garden Party celebrations start with a ceremonial performance from the OPP Commissioner’s Own Pipes and Drums. Enjoy the evening, strolling through our Festival Park and Community Centre while enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres and listening to musical performances by the Good Lovelies. Be the first to view 80 plus Fine Art Exhibitors in a relaxed and intimate setting. Door opens at 6:00 pm with festivities starting at 6:15pm on Friday, August 18th. Opening Night Garden Party tickets provide entry to the Festival for the entire weekend. Throughout the weekend we offer a variety of musical performances and local cuisine from Ellie’s Taste of Texas to our own Buckhorn Beaver Tails along with many Fine Art Exhibitors.
