WINTER MAINTENANCE AT THE COTTAGE

Letter from the Publishers Planning for a Record Year for Your Professional and Personal Life

2016 Business Awards of Excellence

Entrepreneur Innovation Recipient

With the start of each new year we look to the year ahead, assessing the weaknesses and challenges of the year prior, and setting in motion plans for change. This can mean better organizational strategies and utilizing the many tools available in Apps and Planners for time management. To succeed one needs a plan – a map for your success if you will.

MARKETING & PROMOTION

Taking the time to reflect and plan is key for both your business and your personal life. Want more time with your family and loved ones? – You need to plan for it. Want more sales? – yup – you need a plan for that too. Life is busy – there is no question about it, but having a plan for a “different and more successful year ahead” takes effort. We encourage you to take a day at minimum and reflect on the past year, and plan for the changes you want to see in the year ahead. List the pros and cons of your actions in 2017 and create a plan for 2018 that addresses your weaknesses and enhances your strengths, in both your professional and your personal life. A wise man once said – “The man who made time – made plenty of it” though somehow, we never seem to feel that we have enough time. Make the time this year and commit to a project for change – you’ll be glad you did. We wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous 2018 – Please reach out to us if we can assist you in furthering your business marketing goals, we look forward to showing you what we can do! Another Year of Growth & Change for the Pyle Group More than a decade ago, Andrew Pyle made a commitment to clients that his wealth management practice would not grow at the expense of clients. In other words, adding clients without building the infrastructure beneath was neither desirable or feasible in this changing and more complex environment. Individuals, families and businesses wanted more than just a portfolio. They wanted comprehensive and holistic planning, a place to discuss estate planning, a sounding board to see if they were in the right insurance policies or whether they needed something different. At the same time Andrew would hear a common refrain for there to be a more coordinated approach between financial, legal and tax partners. The Pyle Group entered 2017 with the

same customer focused agenda as always and a commitment to – create value, reduce financial anxiety and be the client’s quarterback on wealth issues. The financial industry has gone through some significant changes in the past few years, with increased regulatory attention to disclosure, fairness, suitability and transparency. At the same time, institutions and advisory teams have had to step up their game when it comes

to anti-money laundering, cyber-crime and terrorism. Most of this occurs in the background where clients do not see the resources and time needed to provide for their financial safety and wellbeing. It does require a continual upgrading of team education and capabilities. The milestones the Pyle Group achieved this past year are too many to cover in this article, but here are some key ones.

The team added another full wealth advisor in 2017 as Ally Pyle transitioned from business development officer. She now partners with their Investment Associate Eileen Huggins to expand their wealth management platform to families in Ontario. Emily Downie has also become the central financial planning representative for the team as they pursue the goal of making sure that every client not only has a plan, but has one that is updated at least every three years. As the business has grown, the support from Senior Associate Brittany Scott and Administrative Assistant Tammy Sargeant has been invaluable. As of November 1st, Andrew also took over responsibility for the Peterborough branch and the support from the entire team has been critical to projecting to the community the client-focused wealth management platform that is both needed and deserved.

Planning Takes on an Even Greater Importance with a Business

It is a fact. Small businesses in this country have and still do account for the lion’s share when it comes to employment growth and the building of strong communities. This past year has been somewhat stressful as the federal government introduced proposed changes to how private corporations are taxed and this has influenced how families plan for the transfer of their business legacies across generations. Recall that only a few years ago the previous government affected changes to how testamentary trusts are taxed and this past year new rules kicked in which decreased the funding amounts for permanent life insurance policies held in private corporations. Rather than continuously lament about the negative changes facing small businesses in the region, we know that the individuals and families who run them have to look forward and adapt. This is why it is crucial to implement the same best practices with respect to planning as you would with your personal life and investments. And this planning cannot be done in isolation but through a partnership between the various professionals that advise you in your business dealings. Accountants, lawyers and wealth advisors must stay on top of legislative and industry changes. They must coordinate and they must be proactive. For some families that have wrapped up their businesses, it may be advisable to also wrap up the associated holding companies with that business given ongoing costs associated with tax and legal service. Some restructuring may also be required for those businesses that continue to operate and there has to be an eye to the potential for further changes down the road. In the event a business is wrapped up, what next? How does this fit into the personal financial plan of someone, such that lifestyle needs are addressed, alongside the legal and tax implications? In short, 2018 will be a year where many will have to address business and personal planning for the first time and, even for those who have always done so, it will be a year where tax changes will require a new course laid in.

Days Inn & Suites Lindsay is a fresh building full of old-time character. Newly built, The Days Inn opened in 2015 featuring 73 spacious and modern guest rooms and suites. With ten out of eleven hotel owners being Lindsay locals they each had a hand in creating the final touches throughout the hotel. For example, the wooden porte-cochère was hand made by Pat Murphy as well as the beautiful live wood tables in the lobby (these were made from a tree in his back yard—guests constantly ask about them because they are stunning!) The art throughout the hotel was photographed by Jennifer Boksman, another hotel owner. The cozy design throughout the hotel includes a lot of wood to incorporate the old railroad town Lindsay was once known as. Well known for its outstanding customer service and cleanliness the Days Inn makes for a great home away from home. As the only hotel in Lindsay with a pool their heated indoor, saltwater one is open to local Lindsay residents who are welcome to come and use it at their leisure for a small fee. The Days Inn also offers furry family members a pet friendly stay, free Daybreak Café breakfast, and is licensed to accommodate events in their conference rooms and guest rooms. Only a kilometer away, Kent Street (Lindsay’s Main Street) offers a variety of restaurants and shopping. Located beside Fleming College, in front of the Lindsay Recreation Complex, and close to both the LEX and Ross Memorial Hospital, the Days Inn and suites is situated to accommodate you wherever your trip to the Kawarthas may lead. Supporting Local A 2018 Resolution After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season the new year brings new goals and resolutions. Now that we are into 2018, and the festive season is behind us, it is still important to think local when purchasing products and services. Winter months can be lean for many local businesses, so this is a great time of year to think local, and support your neighbours. Incorporate a ‘local’ theme to your New Years Resolution this year. Do you have a health or weight loss goal? Consult a local trainer, or gym. Looking to travel? Book with a local travel agent. Thinking about home improvements? Hire a local contractor or tradesperson. Perhaps you want to get more involved in your community. Local charities and organizations are always looking for dedicated community volunteers. Contact the local branch of your favourite charity, or not-for-profit organization, to see what opportunities are available. Get involved in the business community. The Chamber has several volunteer committees where you can share your expertise. This is a great opportunity to support your community, and enhance your professional development. While volunteers are welcomed throughout the year, it is appreciated if you express your interest early in the year, to assist with initial planning. Contact the Chamber office for details. Many businesses and professionals, in your own backyard, can help you reach your goals for the New Year! Perhaps your resolution is simply, to think local when the need arises, and continue this theme throughout the year. The Kawartha Chamber has over 350 members who can help you achieve your goals and resolutions in 2018. Visit the Member Directory at www.kawarthachamber.ca for businesses in your area. Or, stop in to the Chamber office, 12 Queen Street, under the town clock in Lakefield, where staff can refer you to local businesses to meet your needs. The Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism proudly represents members in Curve Lake, Douro-Dummer, North Kawartha, Selwyn, and Trent Lakes. 705-652-6963 • www.kawarthachamber.ca

Merit Travel Group - Kendra Tainsh We are so proud of our Merit Travel Longstays program and this year we were excited to present our exclusive 2018 Longstays Brochure. The program has grown immensely. Our Longstay packages are a collection of longer duration holidays, allowing travellers to spend up to 30 days in their favourite destination – Portugal, Spain, Italy, Hawaii and many more. Our clients love the way the packages allow them to live like a local, with the perks of being a tourist! Longstays are only available at Merit Travel and we feel a lot of pride in them here in our Peterborough branch.

Lifestyle Home Products Bill (left) & Keith Carroll (right) In August we opened our Peterborough showroom, located at our factory at 944 Crawford Drive. As part of our 150,000-sq.-ft. factory, this showroom is about letting both homeowners and the building trades see – up close – where their custom sunrooms, windows and doors are made. They can experience the factory setting where we apply the highest manufacturing standards. At our Official Grand Opening, my brother Bill and myself were thrilled with the warm reception Lifestyle was given by Mayor Daryl Bennett, other city officials and business members. We really enjoy manufacturing in the City of Peterborough. On the day of our Grand Opening it was also a thrill to see some of our first customers from the Toronto area. They came out to congratulate us on our new, larger manufacturing space. Locally and across the province, people are becoming aware that Lifestyle Home Products is a one-stop shop for quality, custom-made windows, doors and sunrooms, as well as lifetime metal roofing shingles, porch enclosures and awnings. Peterborough Museum & Archives On exhibition from April through June 2017, the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) hosted an exhibition titled, "A Matter of Ownership: First Peoples and Métis Objects in the Peterborough Museum & Archives' Collection". This exhibit was curated in-house, and comprised of Indigenous artifacts. The purpose of this exhibition was to repatriate the objects – some ceremonial and sacred – back to the homes from which they originated. Museum officials worked closely with Anne Taylor, cultural archivist with the Curve Lake Cultural Centre, and her colleague Tracey Taylor to determine where some of the artifacts originally came from. Different communities used specific beads and colour-schemes when creating ceremonial wardrobe pieces. The design is like a fingerprint showing where the artifact was made and when. It is the PMA's hope that all of the objects are returned. Currently, the Tsulquate reserve of Kwakwaka'wakw people (located in British Columbia) has responded indicating that a headband and oil bowl that were on display will likely be returned.

WRD Cottage Rental Agency As 2017 comes to a close, WRD Cottage Rental Agency is very proud to still be setting sales records after 23 years in business. 2017 also marked their best cottage rental year yet, all while keeping their once seasonal staff employed year-round. With revenue being almost non-existent from Thanksgiving to Christmas and winter rentals making only a small percentage of total sales, keeping staff year round is an excellent feat. WRD credits wise spending with advertising dollars and budgeting. In 2018, WRD looks forward to launching their updated website. The website changes have been a long time in coming which is primarily the fault of senior management and the feeling that change was not necessary. Our appreciation to Steve Dewey and his hard work in this regard. WRD Cottage Rental Agency looks forward to ushering in 2018 and the busy rental season it will bring.

Peterborough Farmers Market On this 150th anniversary of Canada, the market is proud to have been in operation for over 150 years. It started in the grounds of St. John's Anglican church on Water St. back in the 1820's when local farmers brought their produce in to town by horse and wagon to serve the growing population of Peterborough. It has moved around several times since then. It stood for quite a while under the clock tower of the Market Hall. It then moved south to the plaza opposite the marina at Little Lake. Its current location at Morrow Park has been wonderful, as it allows for both an inside and an outside venue. We look forward to another 150 years of providing our community with a vibrant, year-round farmers market.

Days Inn Lindsay In 2017 our property received a handful of awards, one being the Property of the Year award. This award is awarded to one property out of all Days Inn hotels across Canada which includes 150 properties! We were honored with this award as we had the highest scores related to customer satisfaction, cleanliness, performance and staff satisfaction. We were also recipients of the General Manager of the Year award and the Guest Choice award for our efforts in 2016. The 2017 awards are announced in the early months of 2018 and we are hopeful we can add some more trophies to our display!

What plans do you have for your business that you are most excited about in 2018? Academy Theatre Excitement is building in the Academy Theatre during feverish activity in the theatre! Thanks to two federal grants (Canada 150 Infrastructure and ESDC Enabling Accessibility) and an active community fundraising campaign, we are installing all new (comfortable!) seating on the orchestra level, plus new improved accessible washrooms. These and other upgrades will position us to meet the needs of the future while maintaining the splendour of this beautiful building. We will unveil the improvements in February as we begin celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Academy! Look for several programming highlights during the anniversary year. Griffins Greenhouses We are excited for 2018! We have many new varieties of plants arriving, more tropicals, lots of succulents and some super lovely containers to plant them all in. New and tried n’ true perennials will fill our benches and lots of new and interesting workshops are in the works. We were 41 years old in 2017 and also in 2017 our customer count increased – that means new customers found us or people just kept coming back for more! We hosted over 60 Winter Workshops; that doesn’t even include the workshops we hosted in Spring, Summer and Fall! Community Care Community Care is very excited that in 2018, ground should be broken at 21 Angeline St. N. in Lindsay, the future site of our organization’s new and improved Community Health Centre. The CHC has operated for many years at 108 Angeline St. S. in Lindsay but provincial funding has enabled the organization to purchase the land at the site of the former Lindsay OPP station. The empty building was demolished in 2017 and construction on a new CHC that will enable Community Care to serve local residents and clients of the CHC will begin midway through the year.

Remitting Payroll Deductions All responsible business owners have an obligation to remit business taxes – whether it be income taxes, HST, or withholdings of employee Source Deductions – to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). However, correctly deducting Source Deductions and remitting these withholdings by the required deadlines – typically the 15th of the following month – must be a top priority. With payroll, all monies deducted on behalf of the CRA are considered to be held “in trust” for the Receiver General. If you make an error in your calculations, you are responsible for these amounts even if you cannot recover the amounts from the employee. Employers who remit withholdings or deductions late, withhold the statutory deductions but do not remit them, or fail to deduct the required deductions will be subject to penalties and interest charges. These penalties can be quite substantial and they accelerate quickly to 10% of the amount due if you pay more than seven days late. Repeat offenders will pay a 20% penalty. Interest is applied from the day your payment was due and CRA sets the interest rate every three months, based on prescribed interest rates. Interest is compounded daily and also applies to unpaid penalties. December is a time to recheck the calculations for the calendar year and make any necessary corrections before making the final remittance on January 15th. If an error is discovered when the T4 slips are prepared and filed in February, penalties and interest may be applied by CRA. It’s no wonder many business owners outsource their payroll calculations and there are a number of payroll service providers available to help relieve some stress in this area although the ultimate responsibility remains with the employer.

Why You & Why Your Business? As business owners we can get so caught up in all the details of being busy, we often forget the basics. Competition is everywhere in business and you need to ask yourself, why your customers should be doing business with you and not the competition? Whether you are a new business entrepreneur or a seasoned business owner, asking yourself this question each year is important. What makes your business the better choice? Do you know what your competition is offering, saying and doing? What's changed about your business in the past year and what do you have planned for the year ahead? Spend some time reflecting, researching and considering both the past and the future. Then set about putting in place, a marketing strategy that communicates your uniqueness.

Office Connection Peterborough Office Connection Peterborough Ltd. is a small, locally owned, family run business serving the Peterborough area. We understand the importance of community and building relationships with other local business. In the age of e-commerce, small companies face an even greater challenge of finding effective ways to leave an impression on new prospective customers. Office Connection is the product of 35 years of dedicated customer service and incredible business acumen on the part of my father and his business partner (recently retired). I joined the company in 2002 in the sales department and I still remember the one piece of advice my father impressed on me to this day. Be honest. That’s it, it was that simple and that advice has served me well for 15 years. I have come to respect small business owners in a way I never could have imagined. Hard work and dedication are essential but just as important are the relationships you have with your customers. I have learned I need to understand how my customers do business, anticipate their needs and most of all, exceed their expectations. We don’t just sell a product, we keep our customers connected to their customers. Everything from the equipment to the service, supplies and support all come from our local office. Our customers are not serial numbers, they are valued businesses in our community. Our business solutions include digital print devices (mfp), photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, postage meters, folder inserters, shredders and phone systems (VoIP and digital). We provide on-site service of digital office equipment, installation of network/telephone cabling, phone programming, phone system installation and document shredding. Those Were The Days 2018, a new year to reflect on old memories and the beginning to amass new ones. My wife and I are celebrating our sixty fouth anniversary in a few weeks, some times it seems like a long ago step into another phase of our lives but remarkably, some memories appear to be just mere fleetings of time. Our courting over six decades ago was quite a strange series of events. Maurice was one of my best friends, he lived the next block over from our house and we played together since we were in grade school. In our late teens he was dating a girl named Kay and I was dating Kay’s best friend Helen. Best friends, our relationships seemed like a storybook romance until one night when Kay and I went for a walk. Maybe Cupid got his bow and arrows crossed because Kay and I found we were closer and far more matched than we realized. Of course I said or did nothing because Kay was dating my best friend but ironically and as fate would have it, Maurice came to me and said he thought he was in love with Helen, the girl I was dating. No, this is not

“ New Beginning”

a script for a daytime soap opera although in retrospect, it certainly sounds like one. As time went by, he began dating Helen and I started seeing Kay on a regular basis. In 1954 Kay and I were married, in 1956 Maurice and Helen were married. Are you confused yet? Well unfortunately, it did not turn out to be a happily ever after fairytale ending. Maurice became an abusive husband and an alcoholic which eventually culminated in his death at an early age. Kay has always maintained she got the better of the “swap”, after sixty-four years I hope. We were married in Windsor, Ontario the southern most point in all of Canada where the weather can be completely unpredictable. The sun shone brightly, it was a beautiful afternoon when suits and ties, dresses and spring-like hats were the order of the day. We had planned to visit my mother and dad the day after the wedding but wouldn’t you know it, the very next day Windsor had one of their most severe snow storms, typical for the sunny south of Canada.

January / February 2018 ~ Cottage Country Connection

Partially thinning gray hair has replaced my once thick brown strands, I have a bit more around the belly and wrinkles denoting the laughter and sorrows I have gathered along the way. And Kay? She is just as healthy and beautiful as she was the day she walked down the aisle. I have been asked what is the secret of our marital longevity and my answer is usually, “ I guess she will keep me around until I get it right”. Happy New Year to all. I appreciate your e mails, if you have a story please share it with me. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

Winter Vacationing

in Cottage Country A cottage country winter has just as much to offer visiting vacationers as the warmer months. But how do you know you’re getting what you pay for when you book a rental cottage? As a vacationer, overzealous descriptions can seem too good to be true. As an owner, how does one know that their property will be treated with respect?

in their booking application, which protects all parties involved. This type of thorough vetting eliminates potential headaches for cottage owners and renters alike. There is information regarding the cottage, the property regulations at each cottage which includes a 24 hour emergency number to assist vacationers and/or owners with inquiries or difficulties.

Disruptive conduct is a fast growing problem with the advent of large international marketing platforms. Many companies may not visit the properties they offer, and often there is little or no personal contact; everything is done online.

Before offering their property for rent, WRD advises property owners to discuss the matter with their neighbours. Privacy and vacation time of the people around them is as important as their own.

WRD Cottage Rental Agency is a local business. They are a family owned and operated agency with offices in Haliburton Village. Since 1995 they have been offering properties for rent for all seasons in the Ontario Highlands.

Rich in breathtaking scenery and wildlife, cottage country is also host to a strong and vibrant community. The WRD family strongly believes that as residents, there is a responsibility to protect this atmosphere for present and future families to enjoy. With this in mind, they remain steadfast in ensuring the protection of rental owners, their properties, and even their neighbours, while continuing to safeguard the families who visit.

WRD takes pride in the fact that as bookings are received, they are handled by vacation planners, who know each owner and their property. Questions regarding vacation needs can be answered at this time. Every prospective vacationer is informed about their responsibilities

Dock Installation & Removal Revolutionizing the Industry As waterfront property owners know all too-well, getting the dock in and out as the season’s change can be an enormous task. With cold water and weather, this job can be time consuming and frustrating. Andy Assinck, creator behind the name “HitcHinge” Dock Couplers was inspired to alter the traditional age-old pin-in-a-hole dock coupler, and has revolutionised the product into something everyone can use easily. The HitcHinge dock coupling system is proven with thousands sold, online and through over 50 retail outlets. Even dock builders are converting to this simple, safe way of connecting docks, ramps, bridges and shoreline attachments. The HitcHinge dock couplers parts are all self-contained, it is self-supporting of loads, while also self-aligning during attachment and activation. This system works from above, not from the side or below, and no parts to drop or put in place. The HitcHinge functions silently with internal bushings, no metal to metal, extending the life of the hinge. Made up of two parts, the “Hitch” - a gripping flange that retains an actuation bolt and a locking tooth, and the “Hinge”- a flange which is retaining an outer sleeve over an inner bushing, and end plate washers on a fixed axis pin, that offers an extended range of motion and durability. Patent Pending – the HitcHinge dock coupler has been refined, converting from welded components to a newer sleek look, this new extruded product offers higher quality, a

Lifestyle Home Products grew its sunroom division and other product offerings in 2017. It seems fitting that during Canada’s biggest birthday this Peterborough-based, 100% Canadian company showed up with Canada Day flags, pillows and more at the homes of many of its customers. Here are what some of them had to say:

Dan and Donna Begin gave Lifestyle a big Canadian thumbs up. “I’m so happy we went with Lifestyle,” says Donna. “They were so wonderful to work with.”

Cathy Dickson told us “I wanted my mom to get a Lifestyle sunroom so she could be surrounded by natural light and the outdoors every day of the year.”

Eleanor Redding calls her large, beautiful sunroom “my wonderful rent-a-room.” She was pleased with the financing plan Lifestyle offered to help spread out the payments after the sunroom was built.

Steve Galka says his Lifestyle sunroom has made his home ideal for resale. “But we don’t want to leave anytime soon,” he adds. “We like our new sunroom space too much.”

Shoreline Work

Is Your Contractor Insured? When you are considering having some work completed along your shoreline or maybe the possibility of creating a cleaner waterfront, you as the home or cottage owner need to be aware of the potential risks involved, when your contractor is not properly insured. Home and cottage owners need to be aware that there is necessary insurance that contractors should have in place for not only their company’s protection, but also protection of the property owner. Cottage Country spoke to shoreline expert Dwaine Fisher of Fisher Excavating & Grading. “As a construction business owner, we understand that we need to have insurance on our machines and our workers, but many people don’t know that there is environmental insurance that is required, when a construction company would like to work on and around any waterways. We also need to have WSIB insurance as a business company. So, before you hire a contractor, you should be asking them for proof of insurance before they begin working on your property." Why do you need to see your contractors proof of insurance? If there was ever a leak of oil on one of the machines anywhere around the water, there could potentially be a claim against your property insurance policy if the water ways see fit. Any companies that do not have environmental protection insurance and ice/muskeg insurance protection should not be working near, around or on the water. Any accidents that could occur could potentially go back on the homeowner’s insurance policy since they own the property. Imagine if an excavator went through the ice and the home owner had to put a claim through their policy to pay for it and the environmental clean up for anything that leaked into the water? This issue has been brought to the attention of Trent Severn Waterways and to the attention of conservation authorities. Something that others have not thought of, but when we all work together, this process could become very seamless. Maybe Trent Severn, MNR, and all conservation authorities should be asking for the hired contractors to provide them with proof of insurance before they issue a permit for any water related permits. Ask for proof of insurance from your contractor to be sure you are not exposed to these kinds of risks. Fisher Excavating and Grading will gladly give any customer proof of the proper insurance when requested. By Dwaine Fisher, Owner, Fisher Excavating & Grading 705-878-6474 www.fisherexcavating.ca

Guests arrived in summer casual clothing - the wedding invitation was clear “It’s a Farm Wedding – Be Comfortable!” The wedding party wore cowboy boots – including the beautiful bride who wore a lovely lace detail dress that was higher in the front showcasing her boots. The groom was as handsome as ever in his suit jacket and shirt, with jeans and cowboy boots.

The wedding was planned with the help of wedding planner Jennifer Grozelle of “Rin Tin Tin” who meticulously handled all the details, making the special day a huge success.

The wedding ceremony was held under a tent walkway where guests gathered, with a lovely runner for the bridal party to walk down the isle, with a floral archway where the groom beamed with joy, as he watched his beautiful bride walking towards him.

Guests of all ages enjoyed the candy station that was set up in the tent with a variety of treats and little serving bags.

There was an open bar with wine and cocktails and a canoe was filled with ice and beer for guests to easily grab their choice. A Juice bar was set up beside the bar with water and non-alcoholic beverages.

Wedding favours of pine seedlings with added seeds “for a BEE Enticing Wild flower garden,” sat in a basket for guests to take home with them, a perfect compliment to the farm wedding theme. There was signage everywhere instructing guests in a fun and friendly way – not a detail was left out. The food was arranged with Mark Loescher of Marks River View Diner who provided a scrumptious buffet for a sit-down meal that the guests absolutely devoured! Wine from the Minden Wine Store was plentiful, with choices of red or white on beautifully decorated tables. Colourful potted Mums from Griffins were everywhere, beautifully surrounding the tent and the sand ring, where dancing would later be held. The bride and groom later cut the wedding cake and guests had a choice of cake or delicious cupcakes in an assortment of flavours, made by Leslie McCullough, a close friend of the newlyweds. Soon the dancing began with Country Music Artist Jesse Slack and his band with a wagon as his stage, and guests danced the night away. Later everyone had fun with sparklers and it wasn’t long after that shoes started coming off…the sand under your feet was just too hard to resist. As the evening ended, I left feeling happy and blessed to have witnessed such a special day, with two people who so obviously adored each other, and an event that was relaxing and comfortable while still being beautiful. Wedding Floral Ideas At Griffin’s Greenhouses we love to help with wedding flowers! While we don’t offer services for florist-type cut flower arrangements we do offer potted or planted arrangements that we can tailor to your specific needs. After an informal consultation with Vikki we will come up with a plan for planted arrangements that can be used for your outdoor or indoor wedding venue. Arrangements can be used in or outside the church, at the outdoor ceremony venue, in the reception hall or tent or even as table centrepieces. Many brides are becoming interested in long lasting potted arrangements that can be gifted or kept as remembrances of the special day. Popular trends for arrangements include ferns and succulents. Sword Ferns are big and lush and provide and fresh presence at a venue. Coupled with 3-5 small ferns in vintage pots on each dining table, it’s a cohesive and elegant look. Succulent containers can be big and dramatic enough for the ceremony space or small and compact for buffet tables and table centrepieces. They can even be tear-away so each guest takes home a potted succulent from the centrepiece. Seasonal flowers such as mums and kale for an autumn wedding or poinsettias for a holiday wedding are popular too. We will provide you with the best quality we can find, using either our own-grown plants or locally sourced plant material. Email Vikki with your ideas or for an appointment to discuss your needs. Specializing in

Rustic Décor for Weddings

Planning a wedding is a task that requires attention to detail and impeccable organization. Lists and checklists become common place, and you enlist all of your closest friends to help. You have a vision of how you want your day to look, and you begin collecting décor accordingly, that’s when your house becomes wedding central; decoration and DIY projects take over your home. If your vision includes a country rustic feel, perhaps taking place outdoors or in a barn, Jennifer Grozelle can help. Jennifer is the owner of Rin Tin Tin Country Primitives, a business specializing in rustic décor. Not only does Rin Tin Tin offer custom decorating services, but wedding planning services as well. Jennifer will take care of all the details and pull every aspect together to create a stunning and memorable day for all involved. 5 years ago Jennifer started Rin Tin Tin Country Primitives, as she has always had a love for Rustic Décor. After planning and organizing her daughter’s wedding two years ago, Jennifer bridged that love for primitive style into a Rustic wedding decorating and décor business. Jennifer has a large collection of props and decorations to pull from when creating the perfect look for your wedding day. Her collection includes things like lighting, centrepieces, linens, rustic and wooden décor as well as antiques, and if there is something specific that you have been dreaming about, Jennifer will do her best to

source it for you. Jennifer also creates small scale decoration mock-ups for her clients during meetings so that the direction of décor is mutually agreed upon. We all know having a budget is a very real part of planning a wedding. Jennifer will work with budgets of any size and strives to keep costs down by creating much of the countrychic décor herself. If you are struggling with cutting costs, Jennifer suggests first looking at minimising your guest list, and choosing a venue that will accommodate a smaller more intimate gathering. Using a wedding planner can also help you to decipher which of your wedding-wants you can compromise on, and which parts are more important, and therefore deserving of a larger chunk of your budget. Jennifer has a passion for weddings and says that seeing the look on her clients’ faces as they see all the details fall into place is the best reward she could ask for. You bring Rin Tin Tin your idea, and with creativity and vision, Jennifer creates your perfect day.

Planning a First Look Before the Wedding Ceremony

Something that has recently become popular in weddings is the bride and groom having a private few moments before the ceremony. Known as a "first look" the idea is appealing because it settles the nerves and allows the couple a special moment, between just the two of them on their special day.

Precious time spent together before the wedding, can be just the thing to bring the clarity of the why of it all to the forefront, and bring the assurance that the day is “all about you and the love you share.” Gone are the days of the arms length list of wedding rules. Today's bride and groom are creating new traditions. Perhaps a private glass of champagne between two is a new wedding tradition you both will treasure. It might be a cup of tea or just a hug and a few words of love... whatever you decide to do, the point is it's your day, so make it your own style.

Whether you pick a special place to meet, or plan it to happen at the venue before the ceremony, you may find this to be an important time you both will really enjoy. Seeing each other dressed and ready to say "I do" can be a powerful and romantic moment. Weddings are sometimes perfect, while other times they can be fraught with stress and panic sometimes brought on by meddling family and friends, or just things that can and might go wrong.

Minden Wine S tore for Weddings Something to remember when planning a wedding, especially on a budget, is that alcohol can be a pricey addition to any party. Many weddings that include a sit-down dinner include a selection of red and white wine on each table, and depending on your guest list that can add up to quite a few bottles! Many venues have the option of purchasing their house wine at a reduced price, but most venues also offer that you can bring your own wine for a ‘corkage fee’.

Minden Wine Store is a great place to visit when planning a gathering for a large number of people. Being able to choose the flavour profile of your wine and personalise the drinking experience for your guests really sets the mood for a great gathering. At the Minden Wine Store their knowledgeable staff can help you to choose wines that will go well with the dinner selection you are offering, and get you started on a large batch that you will be able to bottle for your big day. Custom labels are a great way to personalise your wine bottles. Labels with a photo of the happy couple and their wedding date make a great addition to beautifully set dining tables at a formal dinner; or as gifts for your guests to take home. Fermentation times vary depending on the type of wine you plan to make, so plan ahead and mark the calendar to get started early. Minden Wine Store 87 Bobcaygeon Rd., Minden (705) 286-1642

There’s Nothing Small”About Love Over the years, Burleigh Falls Inn Manager, Jennifer Craig has had the privilege of assisting with one of the most romantic days in a couple’s life; their wedding. She finds these events are often filled with much pomp & circumstance, everything on a larger than life scale, and it can all get just a little overwhelming. Recently Jennifer has noticed a trend for more intimate celebrations, smaller gatherings with a true focus on what is most important; the love shared between two individuals. In today’s world there seems to be a real need to slow things down, scale things back, and really focus on the importance of the celebration. Many couples gather around them the most important people in their lives, those who are committed in supporting their love, and whose support they can really count on during their new journey as husband and wife. This trend for more intimate of celebrations, truly is a planners dream. Smaller celebrations allow for more flexibility and tend be a truer reflection of the couple themselves. Imagine being able to include all of your guests in every aspect of your celebration, to include personal photo session with each guest, to hand pick menus reflecting each guests personal taste, and perhaps spend not just 1 day but an entire weekend surrounded with those you love most.

Since 1994

Most recently, Jennifer and her team were honored to host such a celebration at the Inn. The merriment included a weekend full of personal touches, including group outings, family style dinners, campfire gatherings, pajama parties, card games, and family photos; and somewhere in there they fit in a touching ceremony. Jennifer says that after years in the industry, weddings can become almost mechanical, this one however, was filled with so much love for family that it was palpable. You could feel the true love of these two individuals, you felt as if you were a part of something magical, sensing that their journey was going to be truly incredible. There is no “rule” book when planning your wedding, and often couples seem to forget this. It’s your day, your union, and it’s your love. Surround yourself with those who support this in every way, those who have guided you and will continue to do so - whether that be 4 or 400. Most importantly, always remember there is nothing “small” about love. For more information on planning your intimate celebration please visit www.burleighfallsinn.com

Health Hub

The vision of a local Community Health Hub model of care has received a positive boost from the provincial government and has cleared the first stage of an approval process. The Central East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) recently endorsed an application from the Community Care Health & Care Network for a “hub model” capital project. The endorsement from the LHIN board of directors means Community Care’s funding request to build a health care hub gets forwarded to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for review. If successful, a planning grant will be issued to initiate the capital development project. Community Care currently operates five service sites in Lindsay and offers Community Health Centre services, Community Support Services, Home Support, Hospice and Palliative Care services. The Hub model proposes housing all of Community Care’s current LHIN-funded programs and services in Lindsay, along with those of several other local health care and service agencies. A new hub would be located on land purchased at 21 Angeline St. N. in Lindsay, where a new Community Health Centre is scheduled to be built in 2018.

Since 1994

LHIN staff completed a thorough review of Community Care’s proposal, after taking into account the need for the project in the City of Kawartha Lakes, along with its operational model, alignment with regional integration and health system capacity planning, and availability of operating funding. The Hub proposal is well aligned with Community Care’s vision to build healthy communities and with the organization’s current planning, says Chief Executive Officer Catherine Danbrook. “Community Care has several objectives in proposing a Community Health Hub model,” she said. “It would bring together multiple community-based services to meet local needs through collective impact and integrated service delivery. It would also improve operational efficiencies and client experience, and help to simplify client navigation of services.”

Several local organizations in Kawartha Lakes have been engaged in hub project discussions over the past year, to identify a number of formal and informal linkages that already exist between them. The participants have also identified several expected benefits of a health hub, including simplified access to public services, co-ordinated care, shared training opportunities, a communityfocused approach to providing resources and communications, and some shared departments and resources. Follow the progress of the health hub proposal at Community Care’s website: www.ccckl.ca

The former Lindsay OPP station on Angeline Street in Lindsay was demolished in the fall of 2017. The site will be the future home of Community Care’s Community Health Centre. The An integrated health hub would organization has made application to help potential partner organizations the province for funding of a “hub” that build capacity through collaboration would feature several local health care and efficiencies, enhance financial organizations, in addition to Community sustainability and allow for better Care programs and services. leveraging of private sector partnerships.

Dr. Terry’s Zoo Winter has arrived with the threat of frostbite and hypothermia. Our client Tim arrived for his dog’s morning appointment with a stray cat in tow. Upon starting his truck a large cry alerted Tim to the cats presence underneath the hood. This feline had escaped harm from the trucks engine but not from the ravages of winter. On examination this sorrowful feline had suffered a severe case of frostbite of its ears, feet and tail. We took this sweet cat under our wing and named her Mistletoes. Several toes were absent as was two thirds of her tail with exposed bones. After nurturing her with warmth and an abundance of food we prepared Mistletoes for surgery. We amputated the exposed bones on her feet and tail. The frostbitten ears tips that were necrotic, sloughed off with nature’s help. The end result was a very happy, affectionate cat. We found Mistletoes a great home and a year later on examination we found that she had become a roly-poly cat requiring a diet! Frostbite begins when the body gets cold and the blood pools into the body core from the extremities. The ears, tail and toes can get so cold that ice crystals form in the tissue. With no blood the tissue undergoes necrosis and eventually sloughs. Some dogs like our Cuban rescue, Amigo Habanero, require a winter coat. Even this will not prevent frostbite of the extremities. A good rule of thumb is to go out with pet and when you are ready to come in they probably will be too. Remember to keep your bird feeders full of black oiled sunflower seed to help our feathered friends. Enjoy a warm evening by the fire with your best friends! Many dogs suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety when we go to work or go out, leaving them at home alone. Fido might chew on things, get into mischief or in some cases cause harm to himself. What may be happening is your furry friend is letting you know that they miss you and they are lonely and stressed. My dog will often lick herself for so long while I am out, that I come home, and she is literally drenched on her face and chest. My fiancés dog will chew his hind leg until its raw and sore when he is alone. What Can You Do? First a trip to the vet is a must. You want to make sure it isn’t anything more serious and you will want your vet to advise you. One idea that may help is getting a dog walker. Having someone reputable come but and take your dog for a walk will shorten the day and make the time alone not so challenging for them. Another idea is leaving the TV on or music, and being sure to leave a light on. Often, we forget when going out in the daytime, that the sun goes down earlier in the winter, and your pet may be stressed in the dark waiting for you to come home.

If it’s really bad your vet may recommend something to give your dog to calm him or the dreaded cone head to stop them from hurting themselves or damaging the house. You can also try a thunder shirt – it is a shirt you can find in most pet stores and it is used to calm fear in thunderstorms and is also good on days when fireworks are going off – another thing most dogs do not enjoy. The snug fitting shirt may bring comfort, encouraging them to snuggle up and sleep. Lastly some people find that crating their pet may stop this behaviour as they feel safe in a smaller environment and soon a routine happens, and they know you are going out when they get into the crate. The key is to not make it a bad thing – I suggest talking to a dog trainer if you want to try this, as the age of your dog and other factors will play a part. After all we want our furry friends happy! By Donna Matthews

Why is Grooming Your Dog in the Winter Vitally Important? Many are under the misconception that a longer coat in the winter is better to keep our furry friends warm, after all we wear warmer clothes in the winter, right? WRONG! Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact, dogs need more grooming attention in the winter. When grooming is ignored, the skin becomes irritated, dry and sore, causing discomfort. Whether your dog has short or long hair, proper winter grooming is essential for your dog’s skin, paws and coat. Cold air and snow, along with salt and sand, causes dry itchy and sore skin in dogs, just as it does in humans. Imagine not taking a bath or taking care of your skin all winter? How dry and sore would your skin be? In wintertime your dog’s fur gets wet frequently, from snow and slush mixed with road salt and sand. The fur becomes matted, holding moisture like a sponge and causes your dog to actually be colder. Shirley Manning of the Paw Spa in Lakefield has been grooming dogs for 28 years. “It always makes me sad when I see pet owners neglecting grooming in the winter– it’s so hard on the dog.” Contact the Paw Spa and give your pet the love and care they deserve this winter. The Story of the Peterborough Museum & Archives Over the next 40 years, the Victoria Museum was plagued with issues of ownership and responsibility for the collection, which was eventually boxed up after the Library Board suggested that they too needed space. The Historical Society was still determined to have a museum and under their guidance and nurturing re-established a Historical Exhibits Room in the The Institute’s push for a museum was a long hard fight and it basement of the library. Space continued to be an issue for the wasn’t until 1896 that some of the town’s more prominent figures growing collection. entered the fray. With the blessing of Council, the Town and County of Peterborough Historical Society was formed and under In the early 1960s, with the Country’s centenary on the horizon, their guidance and hard work, the Victoria Museum was dedicated there was a growing need for a new community museum. When on June 22, 1897, opening at Inverlea, with Catharine Parr Traill as the Centennial Committee asked citizens for suggestions for a its first honorary chair. The museum didn't actually open to the permanent memorial to Canada’s 100th anniversary, they were overwhelmed that the reply was for a museum. public until the 31st of October of the same year. In 1843, the citizens of Peterborough established a Mechanics’ Institute – a group who enjoyed studying and lectures on history, literature, arts and science, and natural history. They showed portions of their collections in storefront windows, starting what were essentially Peterborough’s first museum displays.

The Victoria Museum got off to a wonderful start. Sadly, interest dwindled over the next few years and membership began to decline. This forced the Historical Society to do much soul searching. With little money on hand and repairs needed to Inverlea, they decided to move the collection. In 1912, the society reopened the museum at the new Carnegie Library amidst another surge of interest.

Farmers Market The business of farming doesn't shut down because it's cold outside, and neither does the Peterborough Farmers Market. Farmers are becoming more innovative as they strive to create sustainable, viable business models for themselves and for their customers. During the winter months, as the market moves indoors from November to May to accommodate shoppers and vendors over the colder months. Many farmers are working hard to extend growing seasons with greenhouses that keep producing into the winter months. The market offers a good selection of greens including spinach, kale, arugula and mixed lettuce greens. There is a mushroom grower who provides several varieties of mushrooms throughout the winter, wild rice from Buckhorn, micro greens and sprouts can also be found year-round. Of course, root vegetables are plentiful and better storage facilities mean that potatoes, carrots, parsnips, leeks, turnips, beets and squash are all available well into the winter months too. As well, there are a lot of apples and some pears to be had, and don’t forget ciders and grape juices. A new-comer to the market - Kawartha Winery now has a stall, so be sure to stop by and say hi. Staples like preserved and dried fruits, many jams and jellies as well as

spicy sauces, maple syrup and honey can be bought all winter. The market includes many prepared foods including a variety of multi-cultural dishes to tempt your palate. You can buy beef, chicken, turkey, pork, eggs, deli-meats, cheeses and smoked fish, wild caught in Lake Huron. There really is something for everyone at the market – self-care products such as soaps, creams, salves etc. as well as herbal elixirs and tonics. There are pet remedies and treats available for our furry friends, plus birdseed and suet for winter birds. Snow Paint Sparkles; that one word causes enormous joy in most kids. Add the word paint, and the fact that this is a super-fast craft to prepare, and it’s a win. To make this beautiful fluffy snow paint you will need 3 ingredients: white glue, shaving cream (the white fluffy stuff; I like unscented), and glitter or sparkles. I was able to get all of these things at our local dollar store. I chose white sparkles to go along with the snow theme, but any colour of sparkle would be fun. Mix equal parts shaving cream and white glue in a mixing bowl, once completely blended add the sparkles and mix some more. Sometimes the glue works best if you chill it in the fridge first. You want the mixture to stay like a fluffy cloud rather than runny. If in doubt add more shaving cream. Use a large paintbrush to create your snowy pictures on a dark coloured paper. Through our trials I did find that using normal construction paper got a little soggy, so perhaps think about doubling up your papers, or use a heavier cardstock. Leave to dry for at least a day, sometimes more, due to the consistency of the fluffy paint it can take a while to set and dry completely. Once dry, the paint has a soft squishy consistency and sits up off the page. Emily Ireland

125th Anniversary Celebration for Academy Theatre The Academy Theatre will begin its 125th anniversary by being closed for several weeks to make substantial improvements. The “Take a Seat at the Academy” fundraising campaign is about more than new seats; it’s a major step in the history of this venerable attraction, marking a significant transition into the future. At its January 1893 opening, the Academy of Music featured all wooden benches. The current seats were installed circa 1930, to provide more comfort for patrons as the owners shifted focus to the expanding market for movies. Now, it’s time for further improvements in both comfort and accessibility. The new seating will afford more legroom and hip room, reflecting the reality that people today are taller and larger than they were 90 years ago. Also, more people have accessibility needs, so this winter’s project will add greater capacity for wheelchairs plus more accessible washrooms on the main floor.
