Discovering Cottage Country

Come to Cottage Country & Just B-r-e-a-t-h-e We all know that breathing oxygen is essential to life, and getting enough fresh air is important for our health. Here in cottage country, we have an abundance of delicious clean air which is fast becoming a privilege in this pollution-filled world, and it’s one that we often take for granted. City dwellers rush up to Cottage Country eager to escape the daily grind, knowing instinctively that the clean country air will feed their souls and rejuvenate their bodies, as they take a break from their busy lives. It can be tempting to feel as if we should “do” something all the time once we arrive and, of course, fun and adventure are a necessary part of the experience…we often forget that sometimes, it’s important enough to just “relax and b-r-e-a-t-h-e.” Breathing properly is integral to our well-being. Many of us may have experienced a panic attack at some time in our lives and we weren’t breathing properly. It could be because our breathing was shallow, or we were often forgetting to breathe at all. Shallow breathing can cause hyperventilation which makes us feel that we don’t have enough oxygen, but in fact, we are getting too much oxygen when we hyperventilate. A certain amount of carbon

Since 1994

dioxide is required to help regulate the amount of oxygen which our brains need to function normally. Many find the following technique helps to quickly reach a deeply relaxed state. It’s known as the “7-11” technique. Often helpful for those who have difficulty falling asleep at night. All you have to do is breathe in to a count of 7 and breathe out to a count of 11. As long as your ‘in’ breath is shorter than your ‘out’ breath your body will begin to relax as your brain receives the correct amount of oxygen. Repeat this a time or three…everyone is different, but when you no longer feel like doing it - is when you stop. Of course if you have any concerns about your breathing, it’s something you will want to see a doctor about naturally. We hope you can find some time to stop and do some breathing exercises with us this summer, and remember to appreciate every single breath of our sweet cottage country air. Just B-r-e-a-t-h-e. Are You a Camper or a Glamper? Camping season has finally begun! For many people camping is a much-loved part of the summer experience, especially for those who thrive on going back to basics and “roughing it” in the wild. For others though, the thought of leaving behind their comfy bed and having to sleep in a tent is not so appealing. Good news, you might be a Glamper!

With the rise in popularity of the glamorous camping phenomenon, aka ‘glamping’, this means that now you can have it all. Imagine being able to enjoy a custom-built luxury tent in the woods which enables you to actually sleep in a real bed and bring all the comforts of home with you. This allows many more people the opportunity to experience the joy of camping who perhaps might not otherwise even consider it. Meet Canadian glamping experts Tenting in Luxury, (a division of Porcupine Canvas) producers of the finest tent canvas in Ontario. The company has been manufacturing tents and tipis for 35 years in Schumacher, Ontario and has perfected the art of producing high-quality, 5-star canvas tents which are fire retardant, and mold and water resistant, allowing for longer life and durability.

tent which can be adapted to house your pet, Tenting in Luxury will work with you to ensure you find a practical solution for your purposes. Their prospector-style tents are set up using an external frame, and the tent is reinforced at the peak and eaves to ensure maximum strength for mounting. The internal frame style tent is designed to be mounted on aluminum frames – which can be provided by the company or a wooden frame structure, if desired. The insulated canvas is made of a 3-layer system which allows condensation to evaporate through the layers while keeping the cold out and the heat in.

The tents are quick to install and dismantle, and come in various different sizes which can be custombuilt to suit your needs. The possibilities are endless, and whether you need a bunkie or a mini-

Easy Campfire & BBQ Bread Recipes Although bannock is frequently thought of as a native invention, the simple flatbread actually originated in Scotland. Brought to North America by Scottish Fur Traders in the 18th and 19th centuries, the easy-to-make staple was adopted by the Metis and Great Plains peoples. Cooked over a fire, bannock was an excellent source of energy and a good addition to the protein rich diets of these communities. Bannock in its purest form consists of flour or oatmeal, baking powder and water. Shortening can be added to the dough before it is cooked directly on the fire, or the bread can be fried on a greased griddle. The bread makes an excellent addition to camping meals because the dry ingredients are easy to take in a plastic bag. Simply add water at the campsite to complete the dough. The following recipes take bannock up a notch and make perfect fare for the fire or barbecue.

dough with 1 tbsp. of the chutney. Push a sharpened stick or metal skewer into the end of a wiener and roast it over the fire, turning frequently until well cooked. With the wiener still on the stick, wrap a piece of dough around it chutney side in, and seal the dough carefully at the seam and ends. Roast the bannock-wrapped wiener over the fire slowly until the dough is cooked uniformly. Eat immediately. The versatility of bannock is endless. Add some dried fruits, nuts, herbs, spices or other tasty ingredients and adapt these recipes to enhance any fireside dining experience.

Basic Bannock • 2 1/2 cups flour • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 cup water

• 6 tsp baking powder • 1/3 cup margarine

Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Rub in margarine until mixture is uniform pea-sized chunks. Add enough water to make a stiff dough and knead the bannock just until the dough is uniform. Pat or roll dough out into a circle about 1/2 inch thick. Place on a greased pan and cook 8-10 minutes over a campfire or on a camp stove. Flip bannock and cook 10 more minutes on the other side. (Alternately the bannock may be cooked on the barbecue in a pan.) Monitor the cooking frequently to avoid charring the bannock as fires may produce uneven and unpredictable heat.

Cinnamon Roll Bannock • Dough for Basic Bannock (see above) • 4 tbsp. Brown sugar • 4 tbsp. Chopped pecans • 2 tsp. Cinnamon • 2 tbsp. Margarine Prepare Bannock Dough as above. Prior to cooking, spread with margarine and then sprinkle with sugar, nuts and cinnamon. Fold Dough in half, enclosing cinnamon filling and then roll it out again. Bake as for Basic Bannock and serve with butter or maple syrup.

Bannock Dog • Dough for Basic Bannock (see above) • 6 tbsp. Mango chutney • 6 Cheese-filled hot dog wieners Divide dough into 6 pieces. Roll each piece out to a little longer than the wieners and about 4 inches wide. Spread each piece of

Imagine having an instant getaway right on your very own doorstep. The Brojects first introduced us to the idea of a She Shed on Cottage Life TV when they decided to take an ordinary wood shed and transform it into a private oasis for their wives to escape to. The ladies loved it and the idea has blossomed.

Pigeon Lake Home of Emily Provincial Park

Pigeon Lake is on the Trent Severn Waterway just west of the County of Peterborough and entirely within the City of Kawartha Lakes. It is a large lake, covering 13,200 acres. It is known for excellent bass, walleye and muskellunge fishing. Pigeon Lake is shallow with an average depth of 3 meters and is 15 meters at its deepest point. There are a number of cottages and permanent residences on and around the lake together with many resorts. Egan Marine uses Pigeon Lake as its base for the rental of houseboats, which provide vacations on the Trent Severn Waterway. Pigeon Lake is the home of Emily Provincial Park, which has good facilities and many large and private campsites that make it an ideal place for families who wish to vacation on the lake. Over 150 of the campsites have electrical service and all have fire pits, a picnic table and a parking space. The park has natural heritage programs, two sandy beaches and easy access to the Trent Severn Waterway The lake has its source on the Pigeon River where the community of Omemee is and the lake is long and narrow extending north from Omemee to Bobcaygeon where you will find Lock 32 on the Trent Severn Waterway. At Bobcaygeon, Pigeon Lake meets Sturgeon Lake to the west at the northern top of the chain of large lakes. In the 1800s lumber was king in the Kawarthas with large lumber mills built in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1832 Thomas Need built the biggest lumber mill at Bobcaygeon on the Sturgeon Pigeon narrows. That mill was very busy due to its strategic location. It continued to operate until the early 1900s long after the other mills in the Kawartha Lakes had closed. Need turned the mill over to young Mossom Boyd to manage it in the 1840s as he went on to other business ventures. These men played a key role in development of the area including steps towards the building of the Trent Severn Waterway. Large estate cottages were built in Harvey Township on Pigeon Lake before World War I. These include “Missisquoi” on Sandy Point, built in 1913 by businessman and politician Sir Edward Kemp. This spectacular property is now for sale with a $12-million-dollar price tag. There are many less costly alternatives for a place to call home on Pigeon Lake. By Murray H. Miskin

Brojects In The House in Virtual Reality Andrew and Kevin have gone 360 with a series of six new virtual reality videos available on Cottage Life’s DIY YouTube channel and when you download their Brojects VR App (for iOS and Android) from the App Store and Google Play. Shot ‘in the house’ at Great Village, each video features a 1 to 3 minute VR excerpt from one of the bros’ featured minibuilds, small-scale DIY projects that have been a staple of the Cottage Life DIY channel for the past three seasons. Now, all this sounds really exciting you’re saying… but what the heck… this whole VR thing sounds a bit complicated. Actually, it’s pretty simple… once you know how. Which is why they’ve put together this basic guide so that you can get the most from your Brojects VR experience. Best to worst, here are the Brojects’ recommendations for watching VR video:

BEST — Brojects VR App Free; available for smartphone (iOS and Android) A Google Cardboard-compatible viewer is recommended but not required. Download the free Brojects VR App from the App Store or from Google Play. Once installed, and as long as you have a Google Cardboard-compatible viewer with which to view the video, you can get a fully-interactive 360-degree video experience — as if you were standing ‘in the house’ with the boys. As well, headsets will also be available through Cottage Life, here at Cottage Country Connection (follow us on

The Brojects recommend buying yours from Unofficial Cardboard. NOT RECOMMENDED — Safari Browser

Free; available for smartphone (iOS and Android) With or without Google Cardboardcompatible viewer Download the free YouTube App for iOS from the App Store and for Android from Google Play. The Android version of the YouTube app includes a “Cardboard” option that allows you to view the VR video using a Google Cardboardcompatible viewers. In “Cardboard” mode, the screen is split into two identical images, side by side, one for each eye, giving you the best viewing experience.

NEXT, NEXT, NEXT BEST — The latest versions of the Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer Browsers Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer work the same but you can’t get 4K Ultra HD video resolution as with the Google Chrome Browser (maximum resolution is HD).

Safari doesn’t work for VR at all. Users on Safari will just get a weird flat image that shows all 360 degrees in a flat image. In other words, the video in Safari will look like a flat atlas, whereas in Google Chrome or Firefox it will look like a globe. The Brojects VR Experience is brought to you by Farmhouse Productions, Bell Fund, Cottage Life and Blue Ant Media. Tune in to Cottage Life TV on Thursdays at 9 for Brojects in The House!

The iOS version of the YouTube App does not have a “Cardboard” option. You still get the interactive 360 video experience but not the split screen, which allows for the more immersive experience. Panning and tilting functions are controlled by moving your smartphone up and down, and to the right and left.

NEXT, NEXT BEST — Google Chrome Browser The Google Chrome Browser allows you to watch virtual reality videos from the desktop in 4K (Ultra HD), using a keypad-style VR control interface, similar to Google Maps. Click left and

A Padd le

for Your Thoughts I have a paddle. It stands proud and tall in the entry way of my home. In the morning, when I am alone in the kitchen, sitting at my island, enjoying my morning dose of caffeine, I can see the grip of the paddle peeking out from beside the chest of drawers that it boldly protects. It reminds me that the paddle has a history. Hand carved by my Great Uncle Ray, its beautiful cedar coloured stain and brown leather hand grip boasts a weathered look with many scratches and scrapes that hold the secrets of its many lake filled adventures. It has traded hands through three generations of canoe enthusiasts. The paddle has travelled down many winding roads, tossed in the back of trucks with life jackets and camping gear, strapped onto heavy backpacks as it has made its way across wet and dank mosquito-ridden portage routes and has skimmed through shiny still waters and braved rough stormy lakes. My favorite memory of the paddle took place several years ago on a warm July morning in Haliburton. Tucked away in an inlet on a quiet island on Red Pine Lake, I was the first to rise. I tiptoed down to the lake. A dense fog hung heavy and I could not see 5 feet in front of me. I grabbed the paddle and pushed my canoe into the cool dark water. My strokes slow, steady and quiet, the only sound was the trickle of water that ran off the tip of the paddle before I dipped again. Somewhere, in the haunting fog, the call of a loon echoed to welcome the morning. I paddled across the lake and waited and watched as the warmth of the sun slowly pulled back the curtains of fog to reveal the newness of the day. The lake was alive, it sang deep in my soul, bringing the crisp sound of fish jumping as they began their feed on little critters that lazily crossed the mirrored water; the sweet smell of real fresh air, the kind that you can only find at dawn’s early light. In that moment, I shared a secret with the paddle. We were the only ones on the lake to see this. To be a part of this. To experience the beauty of this early morning unveiling. To hear the lake calling. Sadly, this trip was the last full journey the paddle would take. An unfortunate break during its next trip, merely weeks later, left the paddle unusable and forlorn. Patched up and put back together, it took its place at my door. The paddle now just a reminder of the importance of family tradition. A reminder of the long treks in canoes filled with gear and coolers, impatient toddlers and laughing children, eager dogs sitting at the bow waiting to jump to shore, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, best friends, avid canoeists and beginner paddlers; this paddle has been a part of more than just a canoe trip. It has been a part of life. And when I look at the forlorn paddle, it reminds me that the lake is calling and I must go. When asked to conjure up an image that perfectly describes summer, many of us will envision someone at the end of a dock with fishing rod in hand. Fishing is one of those simple pleasures in life that can be enjoyed almost anywhere, by anyone. Here in the Kawarthas, we are fortunate to have been blessed with an angler’s paradise.

R&J Machine in Lakefield has been creating beautiful docks ideal for fishing on – for over 30 years. All of their docks are available in frame-only configuration or with 2’ removable decking panels. With decking available in Western Red Cedar, Sienna pressure treated decking, and Pro PVC decking they are guaranteed to withstand all weather conditions.

Sport fishing generally opens up in the spring and the seasons for Walleye (or Pickerel), Muskellunge (Musky) and Bass are eagerly anticipated. Pickerel makes for delicious eating, and Musky provide serious fishermen (and women) with that exciting trophy catch. Other popular fish in the area are largeand small-mouth bass, pike, perch, and rock bass.

With a variety of docks to choose from such as floating docks, lift-up docks, and the popular aluminum pipe docks, R&J Machine offer quality workmanship, specialized materials, and innovative designs. As the industry leader and the superior choice for docks, their products will make you proud to stand on your Canadian-made dock as you cast out your line, and hopefully catch the ‘big one’.

It’s worth checking Ontario Fishing Regulations to be sure that the season for the species you are fishing for is open. The reason fishing is restricted to open seasons is to preserve the species by allowing them to complete spawning. This hopefully ensures future generations will be able to experience standing on a finely crafted dock, enjoying the fresh air and stunning scenery of the Kawarthas, as they wait patiently for the next bite.

Modern Rustic Design

When creating spaces for cottages, urban lofts, or modern rustic styling there is no better way than to introduce great recycled feature walls from once-used barn boards to give them a new lease on life. It is a great trend that can add a detail of depth and texture, providing a stunning backdrop boasting an element of nature.

The trend once started with wide plank floors, to now large reclaimed wood planks on walls as well the ever popular sliding barn doors. This recent project features rustic boards on the main wall in the open concept cottage by Linwood Custom Homes, enhancing the custom modern wood kitchen by Lakeshore Designs and accentuating the horizontal graining which brings together the modern urban look. We repeated this look to complement the master loft bedroom, and the custom-made bar in the walkout basement entertaining space. There are other ways to create this look without the rustic wood planks, such as creative murals that add depth and interest as shown in the guest spaces. This faux block wood look appears grounded and interesting giving the impression of real blocks, so much so that you are tempted to run your hand over the wall to feel the texture. Selecting the furniture with clean lines and loft-like aesthetic creates a very liveable getaway cottage! Angela Jones, Owner, Principal Designer Lakeshore Designs, Peterborough 705-748-3875

One of the most important things you need to keep in mind in any form of real estate transaction is the Home Inspection.

The Home Inspector is an independent contractor accredited to do the inspection on your purchase. There is no guarantee that he/she will find any/all issues with your property but a welltrained individual will almost certainly uncover things you may or may not have been made aware of during your showing. They are working for you the buyer and no one else. You are paying for their inspection and hence it is strongly recommended that you attend the complete inspection. Some people are advised they don’t need to attend, they simply need to write a cheque and read a report. Not advisable. Going through your new prospective property with an inspector and your agent allows them to explain to you exactly what they are seeing and discovering. Simply reading a report that identifies “Minor, Major, Serious” problems does not give you

any information as to the depth and breadth of the problem. Keep the adage “Buyer Beware” in mind; structures are not invisible so we can’t see everything going on in a property but by using a qualified Home Inspector you stand a pretty good chance of making an informed decision on whether to have any potential problems repaired or to simply request your deposit funds back and cancel the deal. These decisions can be difficult to make and the property you have your heart set on could be the home of your dreams – or – the money pit you just can’t seem to stop. It’s your Real Estate Agent’s job to recommend 3 different inspectors to you – yours to research their work & qualifications so you can make an informed choice. 3 Tips for a Great Solar Site

Solar energy offers many solutions for better living. Sunlight is a free, renewable and clean resource than can be harnessed by anyone on the planet. It can be used to power entire households. This lowers energy costs and reduces carbon footprints. When energy from traditional fossil fuel sources is cut back, less harmful greenhouse gasses are released into the environment. This helps curb climate change. Households can get the most out of sun power through smart home design. One of the first steps to integrating a strong renewable energy plan is finding a great solar site. Discover three strategies to selecting the perfect solar spot.

1. GET A CLEAR VIEW Homes need an unobstructed view of the sun for solar technology to operate efficiently. Choose a site that is free from trees, buildings, hills and anything else that may block access to the sun. Solar water heaters and PV panels work best when they have full solar exposure. Direct sunlight also gives homes opportunities to take full advantage of daylighting through windows and skylights. Naturally lighting home interiors by the sun helps to cut back electricity use. When choosing a solar site, make sure the area gets excellent sun access during prime cold-weather heating times, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the day.

2. FACE SOUTH Ensure that solar sites can support south-facing homes. This means checking land inclines, and avoiding northfacing banks. For full benefits, homes should sit against southern slopes. This gives them full sun exposure. It also helps to control interior temperatures and maximizes energy efficiency year-round. Building south is appropriate for solar homes north of the equator.

3. INSPECT SOIL AND DRAINAGE All solar homes should be built on sites with stable soil and excellent drainage. Fluctuating soil and pools of moisture can quickly damage a home’s structure and foundation. Excessive moisture can also cause harmful mold growth and fluid damage in homes. Avoid flood threats by making sure sites are dry and drain properly.

for Canadian Homes A study by Telus, Canada’s second-largest telecommunication company, says that 63 per cent of people before 2018 will own some sort of smart technology inside their home. Smart technology can range from having speakers in your walls and ceilings that automatically connect to a smartphone to allowing you to monitor your kids while you’re away. Check on your sleeping baby, or peek in on your babysitter while you are at work right from your smartphone. Another extremely popular device is a smart thermostat. Everyone knows Canada is known for chilly winters and humid summers. This thermostat works to create a home with the perfect indoor temperature. The smart thermostat follows the movements inside a home, studies what rooms are used the most and at what times to create an auto-adjusting temperature schedule.

Not only does smart technology make a home smarter and safer, but it can also make a home run smoother. Parents Canada says having smart technology can be a lifesaver for a busy family or a couple about to become parents. The biggest feature, according to Parents Canada, is the amount of money that can be saved. Canadian homeowners are becoming greener and they’re also saving 10-15 percent on heating/cooling bills with a smart thermostat. Almost every single thing nowadays can be hooked up to a smartphone, which means instead of turning the car around when you’re almost at the beach because you forgot to lock you front door, you can click on an app on the phone and lock the door from the beach. Nearly half (43 percent) of Canadians, say they’re willing to spend more money for their home to be outfitted with the latest smart technology.

Smart home technology doesn’t just stop at these wifi smart thermostats. There are hundreds of products you can pick up to create a smarter home including smart TVs, smart security cameras, smart wifi doorbells and wireless motion lights that turn on when someone is in the room. We spoke to Dani McNelly of Nortech Home Improvements in Bobcaygeon and she stated, “One of the trends that we are seeing in the industry is the ability for homeowners to be able to monitor window or door openings from a smart device. Pella Windows is one of the trusted brands that we carry and they offer “Insynctive”TM Smart Products. It gives homeowners the ability to see what windows and doors are open, lock entry ways or garage doors and it also gives homeowners the ability to control their blinds or shades while away from home. While convenient, the feature adds a sense of security and comfort for homeowners.” She continues, “Pella has been progressive in the industry by incorporating this type of technology into their window, door, blinds and shades products. I see the industry as a whole taking steps in this direction to add security and convenience to homeowners with smart systems. It allows homeowners the freedom to travel or be

Since 1994

away from home with the comfort of knowing your home is safe.”

Discovery Dream Homes in Peterborough are seeing a lot of interest in smart technology. They use 3D rendering to create a virtual model of the home they are building which enables the client to customize the home to their specific needs. Then, when the home is completed, the homeowner can add any type of smart home technology they desire. The sky is the limit as to what kind of smart home technology can be added to a Discovery Dream Home. We also spoke with Harold Kidd of Kidd Bros Construction Ltd. in Peterborough who shared, “We are seeing a lot of interest in smart home technology that can be controlled via smartphones; from controlling your thermostat to turning on and off lights and locking and unlocking doors. Smart appliances will also be popular in the future...the possibilities for homeowner convenience are endless.” Smart technology is going to continue to grow in popularity. That will mean Canadians can expect more companies to offer smarter and faster products that will make a home definitely smarter than a fifth grader.

Wild Rock From Around the Corner to Around the World

Twenty years ago, two friends moved to Peterborough and opened a small 900 square foot shop dedicated to outdoor fitness and adventure. They put all they had into it. They packed up their car, broke up with their girlfriends, and made the long journey from Ottawa to Peterborough. “It seemed like a fun place to live. It had trees, it had lakes, it had roads, it had rivers,” explained Scott Murison, co-owner of Wild Rock Outfitters. Kieran Andrews and Murison were working together at a shop about to go under in Ottawa and discussed opening a new shop together while rock climbing in Tennessee. They believed with a new location and their own vision and passion behind it, it might work. The two slept in the basement and invested all their hopes and dreams into the store. Two decades later, Wild Rock Outfitters has become a landmark in Peterborough’s downtown.

“Our clients enjoy cycling during the day and spend their time soaking up sumptuous Tuscan landscapes, jaw-dropping Alps and Dolomites mountains or pleasant Spanish windmills, stone fences and farmland depending on the trip. In each destination we select routes and accommodations that create a fantastic cycling experience for our guests,” added Murison. The team also offers local trips, with stays at Elmhirst Resort and The Village Inn. “The quiet country roads surrounding Peterborough offer superb cycling in our own backyard,” said Murison.

And now the store is growing even more. In April, Wild Rock announced the launch of their newest adventure, Wild Rock Travel; helping their clients with cycling trips around the world. The 12 staffers at Wild Rock Travel have become licensed travel agents; helping cyclists from senior’s groups to avid racers, get to trips in Italy (Tuscany & Dolomites), France (Vercors & Alps), Barbados and Spain (Mallorca and Girona). “Kieran and I first began leading winter camping trips and rock climbing trips in 1993 out of Wild Rock. Since these small forays over 20 years ago, travel has grown to become an important part of Wild Rock Outfitters. Beginning more than ten years ago road cycling trips to Europe replaced the paddling, camping and climbing trips of years gone by. No longer were the trips simple one-day affairs, where carpooling and peanut butter sandwiches were the norm,” joked Murison.

Since 1994

Now the trips the staff help organize include “excellent accommodations, exquisite food, and fine wine.”

Wild Rock Outfitters has evolved into a one-stop adventure travel destination, but it’s the Wild Rock community that the owners consider their greatest accomplishment. “I think the thing Kieran and I are proudest of is creating a business that supports more than ten growing families while being a positive influence in driving our community towards a more active lifestyle.” Editorial By Shelby Parker, The Peterborough Chamber of Commerce …The Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce represents 900 businesses in the Peterborough area that employ around 25,000 people. We act as a catalyst for business growth and opportunity, for innovation and partnerships, and for a diverse business community, lobby for good government and keep businesses informed for proposed regulations that will impact the business community.

Overstock Merchandise in Cottage Country Everyone loves a bargain! You’ve probably heard the term “overstock merchandise”, but may be unsure as to what, exactly, that means. This phrase is used to describe goods that are considered excessive stock. This often means that at the end of a selling season all designated merchandise is removed from the floor and sold to a liquidation company. Many stores go through this process weekly in order to make room for new stock.

The experience is not one to be missed – once the doors open people enter excitedly, eager to check all the shelves in hopes of finding that perfect bargain. There are three truckloads of new merchandise arriving each week so you are guaranteed to find something you love. The store layout was recently changed in order to make it easier for customers to navigate but the same friendly and welcoming staff is there to greet you.

The beauty of shopping at a store which sells overstock merchandise is that you are getting brand new (and brand name) items for incredibly low prices. Sometimes the packaging may be slightly damaged, but the contents are as good as new. You can often find high end clothing at prices you can’t believe.

In addition to the regular weekly deliveries, Overstock has added some new stock including paddle boards and kayaks just in time for summer. Also, a great selection of camouflage clothing for men and children, and golf shoes for men, women, and children.

Overstock Liquidation at 3001 Lakefield Rd, Lakefield has been enjoying huge success since the store opened in September of 2013, at the old Jack and Jill location. Those who have driven past on Fridays have no doubt noticed the long lineups, which can be seen from the road, as loyal customers anxiously wait in anticipation of the doors opening.

Take a Gander

at The Leather Shop

It’s always fun to explore cottage country and seek out neat places to shop. If you’ve ever driven along Hwy 7 East towards Ottawa you’ve no doubt noticed the big goose and the collection of rainbow chairs that sit outside The Leather Shop, about 8 km from Peterborough, but have you ever stopped in and taken a gander (pun intended) at the amazing selection of leather goods they have in stock? When you step inside, the aroma of real leather welcomes you. In business since 1982, The Leather Shop has over 1000 pairs of Canadian-made moccasins and a wide selection of sheepskin products on their shelves. The shop is filled with many wonderful gift ideas including handmade wallets. The Leather Shop started selling Cedar lawn furniture 25 years ago when almost every cottage wanted a Muskoka chair on the dock. People became tired of sanding and staining or painting chairs on their holidays. Enter the 100% poly chair, no maintenance and it lasts much longer than wood. The poly chair adds a bright, cheerful dimension to your home or cottage atmosphere. At 48 pounds each, they won’t blow off your dock. They come fully assembled. All you need to do is place it where you want to perch, sit back and relax. Submitted by The Leather Shop, 1382 Trans-Canada Highway, Peterborough, 705-295-4728

Sharing the Roads in Cottage Country Driving to cottage country is a ‘rite of passage’ for many Ontarians. You can picture it now… a long line of traffic including RVs, trucks pulling trailers, boats, cars and of course, motorcycles. Bikes are the smallest, and fastest, vehicles on the road today and as spring turns to summer, motorcycles, mopeds/Ebikes and ATVs are everywhere. Sharing the road is an essential function for all drivers. Many of us have had the experience of being passed on a blind corner by riders who appeared to be convinced they are the next team member competing in an upcoming Moto GP race, but thankfully, just like the NASCAR car drivers doing the same, these types of bikers are not typical. The majority of motorcycle riders are a responsible bunch. Most realize that the cost of running off the road on County Road 507 can cost them their life, or yours. Trees and ye’ good ol’ Canadian Shield aren’t very forgiving if a rider were to miss a corner. As responsible non two-wheeled drivers, we can help: • Look Twice - having a second look before making a turn can make all the difference. Motorcycles are easy to miss and difficult to judge speed and distance. • Listen for motorcycles - we often can hear them before we see them. • Give them more space - motorcycles may be small, but they use lots of space. They will navigate around potholes and roadkill. Having a rear end collision with a motorcycle also has way different implications. • Eye contact is not just for flirting - gaining eye contact with bikers lets them know that you see them, making safer roads for everyone Everyone can be a little more vigilant and sharing the road may reduce the number of motorcycle collisions this season. KIA has announced its plans to introduce an all-new low emissions vehicle to its growing model line-up. The Niro – labelled a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV) – represents a new concept from the Korean car brand, and marks the development of KIA’s first dedicated eco-car platform. Niro will maintain all the practicality and appeal of a compact SUV, while offering greater fuel economy. Engineered from the ground up as a dedicated hybrid vehicle, its attractive, modern styling will help the car stand out in a traditionally conservative sector. The Niro’s all-new platform has been engineered in isolation from existing KIA models, and is designed to accommodate a specific set of environmentally-conscious technologies and next-generation powertrains. Sporting a compact SUV shape, the car’s designers highlight the most

modern architectural designs and contemporary sculptural art as key inspirations behind the new HUV’s body. The car will achieve its ultra-low emissions levels and impressive fuel economy with a downsized hybrid powertrain, pairing KIA’s 1.6-litre ‘Kappa’ gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine (77 kW power output and 147 Nm of torque) with a 1.56 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack and 32 kW electric motor. The powertrain’s combined power output and torque will be applied to the road through a highly-efficient six-speed doubleclutch transmission. The KIA Niro’s body is made of more than 50% ultra-high strength steel, contributing to the class-leading fuel economy and high safety ratings that development teams are targeting. With a strong, lightweight body, the Niro will build on KIA’s reputation for producing cars with a strong crash safety performance. The high-strength platform will not only result in a high safety rating, but also help minimize noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), a key focus throughout the Niro’s conception. The new KIA Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle is due to be unveiled next year, with production for overseas markets scheduled to start in late 2016. Calling All

Fire Flies

Ah, the gentle flash of a firefly; the hallmark of any early summer’s eve! Like tiny bursts of starlight, these pulses of white and green light punctuate the dark like the dots and dashes of Morse code.

Technically a beetle, these “lightening bugs” (another name for fireflies), possess a special organ in their abdomen capable of the mixing of oxygen, a pigment called luciferin, and the enzyme luciferase. When the insect flies upward, these chemicals mingle and create a flash. As the insect descends, the flash turns off. When a female of the same species sees the flash, she responds with her own light signal. Eventually the male and female fireflies find each other and mate. Some fireflies flash just once. Others emit “flash trails” of up to nine sequenced pulses. Still others create unique aerial displays by dive bombing downward and then abruptly ascending to form a “J” pattern of light. A few species waggle their abdomens from side to side and appear to be twinkling just like a distant star. What you can do: If you have a wrist watch that can glow

46

or a flashlight, try emulating the pattern of flashes. Different species of fireflies flash at different rates. Can you attract a firefly by imitating the sequence? And Try this: Make a “night light” for your bedroom. Catch fireflies in a plastic ice cream tub and then transfer them to a glass jar once you get home. Add a few leaves and a drop or two of water. Lie in bed and watch them glow. Let them go in the morning. Savour a touch of nature’s very own night light – a glow that can inspire magic on those hot June and July evenings. Want to learn more? These activities come from the Big Book of Nature Activities written by Jacob Rodenburg and Drew Monkman on book shelves now! What a fun activity this was, for both the kids and myself. Not only did we have lots and lots of entertainment with the boats, but we had smoothies and watermelon galore with all the leftovers.

Depending on how many boats you want to make, you will need several watermelons, we used three; making six boats. The mini watermelons work best as the bigger ones tend to be quite a bit heavier. You will also need a large sharp knife, spoons for scooping, some long kabob skewers, construction paper, tape, and some markers or crayons for decorating. First, a grown-up needs to cut the watermelon in half (side to side) then everyone needs to scoop the juicy watermelon out so

only the rind of the watermelon is left, this is your boat. Create a triangle sail out of construction paper and decorate it. Tape the sail to one end of the skewer, using the length of it as a pole. Now poke the skewer into the bottom of your watermelon boat being really careful not to puncture all the way through; you don’t want your boat taking on water. Now float your boats in a kids’ pool in the backyard, or at a beach in the shallow water. Enjoy all the leftover watermelon, we stuck ours in the blender, added some honey, some lemonade, some frozen raspberries and blended it up for a refreshing treat. Add a muffin cup on top of a Mason jar and poke the straw through – automatic bug cover. Emily Ireland

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Remembering Dad

My dad was a special man, not only the father of seven children but a husband for sixty-four years to our mother, a woman he still kissed hello and goodbye and a lady he always held hands with even to the day he took his place among the angels. During WWII, homeowners were urged to have victory gardens to assist in the war effort because many food products were rationed. Dad dug by shovel, raked and seeded two 50 x 100-foot plots of land next to our house growing vegetables in one and flowers in the other, all of which he shared with any needy neighbour. On occasion, we were told not to bother dad who would seclude himself in the basement; not able to afford a dentist, dad was actually pulling his own teeth. Even now I shudder just thinking about it. Mom and dad went across the river to Detroit earning five dollars for donating blood, money that put food on our table. Once a year Dad bought a sheet of leather and re-soled our “new” shoes. He worked for Lufkin Rule Company for forty-seven years, was instrumental in inventing how tape rules are etched and singlehandedly painted the entire Lufkin Rule water tower. He was a wise man but also a funny man, and I have told these stories before but forgive me, they are truly a couple of my favourites. In the 1940s we amused ourselves any way we could, I was able to balance a 20-foot eaves trough on my hand (still can) so my brother Len suggested we play circus. He held a ten-foot ladder and I climbed up, balancing the trough, all went well until Len let go of the ladder. I escaped with a few cuts and bruises, but to my surprise Dad punished me, his theory was if I was so stupid to climb that ladder then I deserved to be punished. Hmm, Solomon’s logic.

Keeping Kids Busy in the Kawarthas

For school children, the month of June is filled with anticipation, as the freedom of summer is just around the corner. A few weeks into summer holidays, many parents may not feel the same excitement, as they rack their brains to come up with fun activities to avoid the inevitable, “I’m bored!” Living in an area as vibrant and busy as the Kawarthas has its advantages. There is no shortage unique activities and adventures awaiting you and your family. Countless parks, beaches, and conservation areas are a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the warm weather. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in a nearby park, explore trails in a Provincial Park, or go spelunking in thousand-year-old caves. Visit a farmers’ market to experience area agriculture, and enjoy a delicious, local snack. Family friendly activities fill event calendars in July and August. Visit a local festival to experience all the area has to offer. Enjoy a midway, visit farm animals, or take in a truck and tractor pull at a local agricultural fair. Day and music camps are also a great way for kids to have fun, make friends, and learn something new. If you are looking for a lakeside getaway, many local resorts offer children’s programming to keep kids busy while parents get some R&R. Finding new and exciting rainy day activities can be a challenge. Local libraries and museums offer interactive programs to keep children engaged and entertained – many at no cost, or for a small fee. To learn more about family-friendly activities in the area, visit the Kawartha Chamber office, 12 Queen Street in Lakefield, which doubles as a tourist information centre. Or visit KawarthaChamber.ca for many local attractions and events. The Kawartha Chamber proudly represents members in Curve Lake, Douro-Dummer, North Kawartha, Selwyn, and Trent Lakes.

My all time favourite. Sadly, my aunt had passed away and I was one of the pallbearers. During the service a priest mounted a raised pulpit and bade mourners to bow their heads, “Let us pray.” Dad was hard of hearing but refused to wear a hearing aid because it whistled when he turned up the volume. Assumption Church has vaulted cathedral ceilings and as heads were bowed and silence fell upon the congregation Dad’s voice echoed to the rafters, “I can’t hear a damn thing.” Even though a solemn funeral, titters of laughter could be heard. Everyone thought it was funny, everyone that is except my mother. We miss you dad. By Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

A Little R&R for the Puppy Dog This Summer The lazy days of summer are here and hopefully you are enjoying some R & R time. How about your best friend, though? Whether your furry friend is a dog or a cat, he or she deserves some pampering too! Why not send him or her off for a rejuvenating treatment at the Paw Spa in Lakefield? Shirley Manning has been treating the pets in her care ‘like family’ since 1990, and will provide a stress-free environment for your pet in a beautiful country setting. With a team of professional groomers in charge, the

Paw Spa will ensure sure your animal is well taken care of and can personalize the care to suit your pet’s needs. At this time of year, dogs with thick coats generally start shedding so they have a lighter coat in summer but if you do decide to give your dog a “summer cut” it is advisable to visit a professional groomer to ensure the cut isn’t too short – their coats, in fact, prevent them from getting sunburn. If your dog is shedding excessively perhaps a medicated bath is needed to help soothe the irritated skin underneath the fur. Fleas and ticks are a real nuisance in the summertime and can often find a way to sneak onto your pet’s fur causing misery. Imagine how much better your pet will feel after a relaxing flea bath and then enjoying a fluff dry at the end. Dr. Terry’s Zoo Each morning at 5 a.m. our home is greeted with a cacophony of bird calls. Spring rejuvenation abounds in all forms. As luck would have it the lawn mower startled a baby robin who fell with his nest onto the lawn. A game of tag ensued with us finally capturing the runaway and placing him and his nest into a box. The cats thought it was a special delivery in their favour but the little robin was placed safely in the kitchen. I went hunting for worms for his supper. Less than 1/3 of baby wild birds survive their first year even though they manage to stay in their nests. Mother birds will not reject a baby touched by human hands as they do not have a highly developed sense of smell. The voice and appearance identify the offspring to the parents. Some serious digging was necessary to acquire supper. To observe the gluttony of the little nestling as he inhaled the worms brought a big smile to my face. A baby robin should be fed as much as it can eat at least every half hour from sunrise to sunset. Come sunrise Christi was off with Mr. Nestling to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee. It was with tears in their eyes that our six felines bid adieu to this little mouthful of a robin. Amigo, our Cuban canine has a passion for chasing robins at the park. His training in Cuba involved keeping pace with the flying pelicans. A fellow dog owner was terribly impressed as Amigo kept pace with a flying seagull overhead. Amigo’s first blood test in Canada was positive for Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease. A tick was removed from Amigo this March and submitted for testing at the laboratory for nine different tick diseases. Lyme, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichia are the most common. Oral and topical medication and blood testing are available at your veterinary hospital. To leave you with a quote for cat lovers, from Hippolyte Taine (a French author) “I have studied many philosophers and many cats. The wisdom of cats is infinitely superior.” Have a great month of June! Submitted by Dr. Terry, Parkhill Animal Hospital, 705-745-4605

Choosing a Boarding Kennel Vacation time is fast approaching and as we make plans for our family getaway, the old question, “What about the dog?” arises. Depending on the plan and on the dog, it may be perfectly appropriate to take Fido along. But not all dogs appreciate the quality time of long car rides or motel stays. In these cases, Fido may be happier and safer in a boarding kennel. This is often more traumatic for the owner than the dog, so here are some tips for choosing.

✔ Unless you are certain your dog will not experience any stress while you are gone and is extremely comfortable around other dogs 24/7, avoid “cageless” kennels. Most dogs need to be able to get away to their own safe spot where they can rest without being bothered.

✔ Can I tour the facility ahead of time? You know your dog and how he spends his day. Can the facility accommodate your dog’s idiosyncrasies?

✔ Do they require proof of vaccines? This is for the protection of your dog as well as the other kennel guests and should include Bordetella for kennel cough. Check with your veterinarian to make sure that the kennel cough vaccine has been administered since it is not routinely given at check up time.

✔ Can I bring my own food or medications and expect that they will be administered on the proper schedule? Can I bring Fido’s bed or toys from home to make him more comfortable?

Above all, you should have a good feeling after your visit that Fido will have at least as comfortable and safe vacation as the rest of the family.

✔ Is the staff knowledgeable? Do they ask questions such as “Does he like to play with other dogs?”,”Like to be outdoors?”, or is he “Afraid of loud noises?”

Easy Ways to Immediately Improve Your Diet There is one way to immediately take the bull by the horns and improve your diet. Adding fibre is a simple way to stay healthier and fuller without drastically overhauling what you eat for four reasons. The Natural Cleaning System Fibre, once called “roughage,” passes through the body undigested. This means that fibre does not add calories to foods but rather adds cleansing benefits to the body. Fibre is divided into two types - soluble and insoluble. Insoluble fibre assists with moving food along, picking up any undigested particles, and carrying them out before they can become a harmful nuisance. Soluble fibre holds sugars and fats in the digestive system. This allows them to enter your bloodstream at a slower rate, giving you a steady energy supply instead of a sudden boost followed by a crash.

The Key to Weight Control

Because fibre is not digested, it stays in the stomach longer and leaves you feeling full and satisfied. This not only lets you lengthen the time between meals but also helps with portion control. A recent study from the University of Massachusetts Medical School shows the dramatic effect fibre can have on weight loss. The researchers divided participants into two groups and had one group follow a strict diet which included high-fibre foods while the other group was simply told to eat more fibre. Both groups lost weight and kept it off, showing that fad diets are not a requirement for healthy weight loss.

The Numerous Health Benefits Weight control is just the tip of the iceberg for fibre’s healthy benefits. Diets that are high in fibre help control blood sugar levels, making them an excellent choice for diabetic or pre-diabetic people. Fibre has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels are an indication of an unhealthy heart. Reducing blood cholesterol through fibre is a great way to stay heart healthy. Some studies have even shown a link between high fibre diets and a reduction in colorectal cancers.

Fibre is Easy to Add to Your Diet

High fibre foods are found in almost every grocery store aisle. Fruits are an excellent source of fibre, as are vegetables from the Brassicaceae family. This includes produce section staples like cabbage, broccoli, and kale. Roots, such as turnips and radishes, are another great source of fibre. Fibre is not limited to just fruits and veggies though. Grains can also provide a fair amount of fibre. Pasta and bread made from whole grains are an easy and delicious way to have a healthy diet. A simple switch to whole grain foods and additional fruits and vegetables will provide you with the fibre you need to start living a healthier life.

The human urinary system is something people take for granted until a problem arises. Infection or muscle deterioration can occur, leading to pain, burning with urination, or leakage of urine. You can take a number of steps to keep your bladder in good condition throughout your life with healthy habits and regular visits to your physician. Here are 10 tips that will help to keep your urinary system functioning well, whatever your age:

1) Drink Fluids throughout the Day

Most people know that drinking fluids can help promote good health, but they may not know that drinking too much can disturb your sleep and cause you to need repeated trips to the bathroom at night. Eight full 8-ounces glasses of water each day is the recommended amount, but you may be getting additional fluid from fruits and other sources. If you sip small amounts of water throughout the day and stop two hours before bedtime, you can ensure that you get your recommended fluid and ensure a good night’s sleep as well.

2) Drink Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice contains special compounds that help to protect the bladder walls from bacteria. One 8-ounce glass of cranberry juice each day can help to reduce your risk of urinary tract infections.

3) Avoid Constipation

areas before sex, and by emptying the bladder after sex to flush germs from the urinary system.

9) Do Kegel Exercises

Kegel exercises are tightening movements of the pelvic floor muscles that help to support the bladder and reproductive organs. Kegel exercises can help to repair the damage to these muscles that often results from pregnancy and birth, excess weight, or aging. You can find these muscles by stopping your stream of urine at mid-point. Medical experts advise holding the muscles for five seconds, and then releasing it for five seconds. You can then build up to 10-second holds and 10-second releases for 10 repetitions. Kegel exercises should be done three times each day for best results.

10) Talk to Your Doctor About Problems

If you experience urinary incontinence or frequent urinary tract infections, talk to your doctor about what you can do to achieve better urinary function. Medications and surgical procedures are available that can help urinary problems. Urinary tract health can be maintained by a series of proactive measures that minimize negative effects and increase positive ones. These tips will help to maintain urinary health throughout your life.

Becoming constipated can put additional stress on the bladder muscles and make it more susceptible to infection. Eat a healthy diet that is rich in fibre to keep your gastrointestinal system functioning well.

4) Keep A Food and Drink Diary

If you experience bladder problems, try keeping a food and drink diary listing everything you consume throughout the day. You can then begin to eliminate food and drinks, one by one, to determine which ones affect your bladder. Once you have found the offending foods, you can eliminate them from your diet.

5) Maintain A Healthy Weight

Additional weight puts increased strain on the bladder structures. By eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can improve your general health and your urinary system health.

6) Don’t Smoke

Smoking causes increased risk of bladder cancer and can contribute to overactive bladder symptoms. If you want to maintain a healthy urinary system, don’t smoke, and if you do smoke, talk to your doctor about effective ways to quit.

7) Reduce Caffeine Consumption

Caffeine can irritate the lining of the bladder, so eliminating substances that contain caffeine will help to reduce overactive bladder and other bladder issues. These substances include coffee, tea, colas, and even chocolate.

8) Implement Healthy Sexual Habits

Sexual activity can introduce bacteria into the urinary system. You can minimize the risk of infection by cleaning the genital and anal

Chemical Free Sunscreen It’s that time of year again, where sunscreen is one of the most important steps in your daily skincare routine. People always ask me, “Is it really that important to have natural and chemical free sunscreen?” My response is always a resounding YES! Although switching to natural chemical free skincare should happen in small steps to ensure minimal reaction to the transition - I promise it is worth it. Chemical based or natural based sun care will protect you regardless but I encourage you to think of your long term health. It takes 7 seconds for the skin to absorb whatever is applied and it goes directly into the blood stream. Chemical based sunscreens and skin care often irritate the skin, as well as mimic and disrupt hormones. If you don’t know what products you should be looking for in your sunscreen it can be difficult to pick the right one. A few key things to look for when switching to a natural product is to choose organic, or natural mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide, or titanium dioxide) with antioxidant ingredients that protect and benefit the skin. Avoid any questionable chemical ingredients; if you don’t know what it is, ask yourself “Should it really be entering your bloodstream?” One last thing to think about when choosing a sunscreen is to consider the greater environment. Look for sustainable and biodegradable brands. We can determine part of our world; so make sunscreen choices that will protect your skin but also preserve your environment. Slow Fire Roasted

Kick Ass Cajun Barbecue

When we smell foods licked by fire and smoke our appetite is whetted and we start to salivate. This ancient method of cooking dates back to the days of cave dwellers cooking chunks of meat over a fire. Barbecue is the lengthy process of cooking foods over a controlled flame whose fuel source may include gas, wood, charcoal, or a combination of all these. Grilling is a fast cooking method that utilizes high heat and quick cooking methods that we would use for cooking steaks, burgers, pork chops, or random chicken parts. Barbecue often utilizes secondary cuts of meat like briskets, ribs or pork shoulders which are often cheaper than primary cuts like striploin, tenderloin and rib eyes. Secondary cuts of meat are cheaper to purchase but require an investment of time and knowledge to prepare as they cook differently than the premium cuts. Secondary cuts need slower cooking processes to denature proteins and break down collagen in the meats to make them tender and flavourful. Try the following recipe that incorporates a primary cut of meat cooked in a method similar to cooking secondary cuts, and that utilizes a dose of Kick Ass Cajun from The Spice Co. product line that is easy to prepare and will be well received by dinner guests.

Slow Fire Roasted Kick Ass Cajun Barbecue Ingredients: 5lb beef roast like NY strip, prime rib, or pork loin roast, or whole chicken 3 tbsp. “Kick Ass Cajun” Spice Blend, from “The Spice Co.” 3 tbsp. brown sugar ¼ cup apple juice Method: Stir together the “Kick Ass Cajun”, brown sugar and apple juice in a non-reactive bowl. Thoroughly rub the spice and sugar mixture all over the roast or bird. For best results cook on a charcoal or wood-fired barbecue at 275 °f for 2 ½ - 3 ½ hours. Use a meat thermometer / probe to check the internal temperature of the meat. For beef or pork you will want to reach an internal temperature of 135 °f - 140 °f for med-rare. Chicken will need to go a bit higher to 170 °f internal temperature. To serve, slice your steak, pork or chicken in thin slices, like a 1/8th of an inch thick. pile the slices up on a tossed salad, rice or your favourite sandwich bread. Towing a Trailer & Legal Requirements As the lakes and cottages become more active we see more trailers of many varieties on the road. With boats, water toys, furniture and building materials hauled around, there is danger, and safety must always be considered. As a lawyer I have been involved in cases where things have fallen off trailers or trailers have come loose and caused serious and even fatal accidents. When in doubt get help from someone who has experience with the type of trailer you are using. The police are on the look-out for trailers that do not comply with legal requirements or pose a hazard to others on the roadway. There are serious fines for those who do not comply with legal responsibilities. You need a driver’s licence and auto insurance for the motor vehicle that you use to haul a trailer even if you are just doing it once or for a short distance. You must have a valid driver’s licence (G1, G2 or G) to tow a trailer with a gross vehicle weight of up to 4,600 kg. If the trailer is over 4,600 kg you need a class A or class D licence. Most people do not haul that much weight. Follow the rules of the road and do not drive at high speeds or pass without factoring in the weight and length of the trailer. Trailers sway if moved erratically. Slow and steady is best. Let others pass you. Before you tow a trailer, consider the size and power of your vehicle. Make sure it has the power for towing both the trailer and the load. Check your vehicle owner’s manual for towing information. Have the right size ball for the weight and trailer hitch. Make sure the trailer hitch and the vehicle pulling the trailer are level with each other. Use chains or cables additional to the hitch so the trailer and vehicle are not separated while on the road.

Any trailer must have: • A white licence plate • A red tail light • Two red reflectors at the rear of the trailer as far apart as possible If a trailer is wider than 2.05 meters it must also have: • Two yellow clearance lights, one on each side at the front of the trailer to let drivers coming toward you know the width of your trailer. • Two red clearance lights, or reflectors, on each side at the rear of the trailer to let drivers behind you know the width of your trailer. A trailer must have mud guards, fenders, and flaps or be designed so it does not splash traffic behind it. If the trailer or the load blocks your vision, you must have additional mirrors that provide a clear view behind you. Happy trails to you. Submitted by Murray H. Miskin, Miskin Law Office

You are not allowed to carry passengers in a towed trailer. It is illegal to tow more than one trailer behind non-commercial vehicles. Use common sense and do not take chances. A trailer is a vehicle. Before you can tow one on a public road it must be registered at Service Ontario. When you register a trailer you will get a single licence plate and vehicle permit. Attach the licence plate to the back of the trailer, and always carry the permit. Trailer licence plates do not expire or have to be renewed.

The most common questions I get from new entrepreneurs are about HST. A quick online search will provide most of the basic information and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has good resources in plain English, but here are a few pointers:

HST must be clearly calculated. Likewise, any HST you claim for recovery must be clearly identified on the invoice you pay with the vendor’s HST number. All receipts must be kept; credit card statements are not sufficient.

You can register for HST as soon as you start your new business or you can wait until your sales reach $30,000 over any 12-month period. Once you have registered you must charge your customers HST on everything you sell (assuming your goods or services are not exempt from HST or zero-rated).

Some items are “zero-rated” in that HST is charged at 0%. Examples are basic groceries, some agricultural products, prescriptions, and medical devices. Exported goods and services also fall in this category. As a business providing these goods, you do not collect HST, but you can claim any HST that you pay on expenses.

There are three reasons for registering early: 1. You are going to be making large purchases and registering will allow you to recover the HST you spend; 2. You don’t want your prices to jump up by 13% when you do register; and 3. Charging HST provides the illusion of being a bigger business.

A limited number of goods and services are fully “exempt” which means HST is not charged. You cannot claim HST on expenses if you are running a business supplying exempt items. Obviously this is a very high-level overview, but should address some basic questions.

Once you are registered, you must Submitted by Gwyneth James ensure that all your invoices have MBA CPA, CGA Cody & James your HST number on them and the CPAs www.codyandjames.ca

Congratulations

Tom Hunt!

Congratulations to Tom Hunt! He is the 2016 Winner of the Citizen of the Year Award from the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards. This award was created to recognize an individual who has given their time, talent, or ability to enhance the lives of both residents and visitors to the Bobcaygeon Area (usually in a volunteer position). Tom has certainly achieved this, and much more. Tom fell in love with the region many years ago when he first vacationed in the area with his then high-school sweetheart Wendy, who is now his wife and business partner. The couple even honeymooned on Boyd Island on Pigeon Lake, and later returned to permanently settle in Bobcaygeon. Ever since Tom “caught the Bobcaygeon fever”, as he has been quoted as saying, he’s been an active member of the community. As a board member of the Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce, he has been working tirelessly to promote Bobcaygeon and surrounding areas. Tom was directly involved in reviving the Can Am Walleye Tournament on Sturgeon Lake, a popular annual spring event, through his work with the Chamber and he is now Co-Director of the event. In the past, Tom was also involved with Unlock the Summer, a fun family event which kicks off the summer in Bobcaygeon each year. In addition to this, Tom and his wife Wendy sponsor a free skate every Family Day with the proceeds going to the Food Bank. Again, congratulations Tom – very well deserved - and thank you for all of your hard work! Tom Hunt owns Hunt4Dreams Realty in Bobcaygeon with wife Wendy.
