Everything You Need

at the Lake When you think cottage country, you think lakes, and when you think lakes – you think boats. It’s a natural thought progression as many of us spend the summer relaxing; cruising the lake, fishing our favourite honey-holes, or laughing as we enjoy the thrill of water sports like wake surfing, skiing and tubing. Finding the perfect boat for you and your family can be simple with the right team to answer all your questions, recommend products that meet your individual needs and make you feel like you have been truly taken care of.

the family when they purchased it in 1973, together they turned the small business into the largest marine dealership in the Kawartha Lakes. Bill and Jan’s youngest daughter Deborah grew up handson at the dealership, and in 2005, just shy of her 30th birthday she purchased the dealership from her parents and the dealership has continued to grow each season. Boating is a family tradition, and generations of knowledgeable and experienced boaters work at the dealership each and every day.

The Early Morning

Symphony

I’m an early morning riser. I am THAT person who opens their eyes at dawn, rolls out of bed within ten seconds and am coherent, happy and ready to take on the day. My husband is quite literally the exact opposite. If the expectation to wake up early comes anywhere near his sleep schedule, it is done so begrudgingly, the snooze button is hit repeatedly, coherency and plan making of any kind does not exist and excitement about it being a new day is devoid from his vocabulary until at least ten o’clock as it is literally crushed with mumbles, hissing at sunlight and the harsh movement of blankets getting pulled back over his head. Because of his distaste of morning, I often rise alone. When on a girl’s weekend at a cottage last month, I awoke to the noises of the “sleeper inners”. A few subtle snores and muffled mumbles could be heard throughout the cottage and I silently wrapped myself up in a patchwork quilt, slipped out of the screen door with a coffee in hand and headed down to the dock. I was happily greeted by another early morning riser who had also maneuvered her way out of the cottage in ninja like fashion. Together as we sipped our dark roast, we watched the mist burn off from the lake. The sun low, still making its morning assent, started to cast its rays through the shadows of the tall pines. As we sat, we listened to the morning music of animal life. A family of geese obnoxiously honking, an unsuspecting beaver kept beat with little bursts of gnawing sounds, the quiet quacking of ducks swimming near to see if bread crumbs would be offered, the gentle water ripples from eager fish starting to feed on the skittering water bugs and the low buzz of flies and the melodic chirps of birds singing their tune. The moment was peaceful. It was simple, it was welcoming, and it was serene. There was no interruption from motorboats, or radios. Just the simple sounds of animal life sharing their secrets of the morning with us. The “sleeper inners” may have hit their snooze buttons a few times and gotten a bit more shut eye, but we early risers got to enjoy the amazing morning symphony. THUMBS UP ON PROPER INSTALLATION When having renovation work done, why do we actually breathe a sigh of relief when the work starts on schedule? BUT what if the installation and the finished result far exceeds our expectations? What if it gets a big thumbs up? GETTING IT RIGHT The process of conducting effective installations has been key for Lifestyle Home Products. Brothers Bill and Keith Carroll had a business fitting and installing windows before they started their own manufacturing company 29 years ago. “We are a manufacturer who stands behind what we make. We stand behind what we install. We also factory train all of our installers,” says Keith. “The product needs to be a high quality offering, but proper installation is key.” Lifestyle Home products installs lifetime sunrooms, windows and exterior doors, metal roofing shingles, awnings and porch enclosures. Here’s what some homeowners say about Lifestyle installations. “Lifestyle’s two sunroom installers were excellent. They did a couple of extra things. Anything I asked them to do, the standard answer was ‘Sure, no problem.’ ”

- Dan Begin (with wife Donna and Lifestyle’s Keith Carroll)

“I like to be able to give a project over and not have to be there step by step making sure it has been done properly. I was very confident in Lifestyle’s installers. They knew exactly what they had to do with respect to the installation process of all the windows and doors in our home.”

“The installers were wonderful. They worked well together. They did things that we requested. They were clean and neat and tidied up after themselves. It was a great process.” – Doris Rapin (with husband Eckhart)

“I can’t say enough about the installers from Lifestyle. They were mannerly. I had a good time with them here. They were wonderful.” – Eleanor Redding (in her Lifestyle sunroom)

– Michael McDougall (with wife Rebecca)

Those Were The Days

“Summer Vacations" “School days, school days, dear old golden rule days”. Elementary school was so much different back in the late 1939 and 40s when I was a student. Every kid from grades one to eight was stressed to the limits toward the end of June because that is when the final report cards were issued. Back then you had two options, one was to pass into the next grade and the other was to fail and repeat the year, simple as that, there were no in betweens. During recess girls had to stay on the girls’ side of the school yard and the boys on ours, fraternizing was completely forbidden. Usually a single soccer ball was thrown to the throng of boys who chased around the yard in hope of getting in at least one kick. Sandwiches in a paper bag was the order of the day to those who could not go home for lunch and when the bell rang it was lineup time and no talking. In the earlier grades left handed girls and boys had to sit on their left hand and were forced to write with their right hand, as ridiculous as it sounds, left handed school work was considered unacceptable. No chewing gum, no talking unless spoken to, school books were supplied but do not even dare damage one or else. The or else? Well that could well be the strap on both hands by the principal. Put up your hand to go to the washroom and do not be surprised if the teacher refused to let you go. Yes indeed, back then teachers ruled with utmost authority, how things have changed. Ah, but then two months of summer vacation. Off went the shirt and shoes. Most of us ran bare feet the entire summer leaving the house in the morning and not returning until supper time. We played baseball, field hockey, tag, flew kites and even emulated the ongoing war with home-made elastic gun fights. I had a bicycle and was able to ride out to the farms and get part time jobs hoeing weeds, raking manure from the barns, picking cherries or black currants, any chore the farmer could offer. We earned twenty-five cents an hour or ten cents a basket, big money in those days. When the day was done we headed for the sandpits that were flooded with rainwater and we stripped down and plunged into the soothing, cleansing waters. Comparing then to now it is hard to fathom students wearing hats in class, bringing in their cell phones and iPads and even calculators to think for them. During summer vacation the mall seems to be the meeting place or lounging in the house playing electronic games. We didn’t have much way back then but we enjoyed what we did have, today most kids seem to have everything but quite frankly, I don’t envy them one little bit. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

Outdoor Container Plants Hanging Basket, Patio Pot or Window Box care is not difficult, but it is specific. Your arrangement is “contained so it requires you to provide water and food to nourish. Unlike plants in the ground which can send their roots deep in the earth looking for water, container plants need your diligence to keep them healthy, growing and blooming. Assess when your plant requires water; in most cases container arrangements in the sun will require daily watering. Shade arrangements may need water less frequently. Water thoroughly and deeply and until the container feels heavy and water drips from the drainage hole in the pot. If the plant is too dry, water will run out quickly. In this case the soil is stressed and shrunken form the side of the pot allowing the water to run out quickly. Water it then re-water again a short time later when the soil has relaxed and expanded. It should feel heavy with water weight. If using liquid or water soluble fertilizer, fertilizer is required at least

Since 1994

every two weeks. If using slow release pellets, reapply mid-summer. Be sure to not fertilize when the soil is dry as the fertilizer may burn the roots. Dampen first with clear water, then use fertilized water. Environmental factors providing intense extremes like frosty nights, cool, whipping winds or relentless heat can damage your arrangement. Be aware of weather conditions and set down out of wind or sun or inside overnight if needed to protect. Most outdoor container arrangements cannot, however, live in your home permanently in the summer. They require the sun and outdoor environment to properly thrive. Some, like ferns, may be happy in a screened-in porch as long as there is ample light and air flow. Seek professional advice if you wish to carry over specific outdoor arrangement indoors for the winter. Hooked Pro Fishing Tips with Mike Williams

Bass & Muskie Fishing in Cottage Country It is an exciting time of year for anglers with Bass and Muskie season opening in FMZ 17 (Peterborough and the Kawarthas). The weather is warming up and both species can be found in the shallows. BASS FISHING: You can target Bass in shallow water cover: boat docks, trees, rock shoals etc. Bass tend to relate to this cover for ambush points to forage for baitfish crayfish and frogs. They can be caught on spinnerbaits, flipping jigs, soft plastics and of course the old faithful hook and worm. Or you can cover water using top water baits for some amazing heart thumping strikes. FISHING FOR MUSKIE: Muskie can be found on shallow water weed flats. Your best bait will be rolling inline bucktail spinners or shallow running Big Jerk baits. Be prepared to have some patience with them, if you stick with it - the reward is well worth the wait. You can also troll and cover more water. Be prepared to handle these big critters with care as they are a precious resource. Remember to buy your fishing license for the season or for the duration of your vacation.

Since 1994

There are many different types of licences including sporting or conservation, also nonresident licenses available for people visiting Ontario. Be sure to purchase the correct license for your needs. To learn more, go to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry automated licencing website. Good luck and enjoy your fishing adventures! A History of Lockside Trading The History of Lockside Trading Company in Young’s Point began in 1987 with the purchase of the historic Young’s family homestead who founded the community of Young’s Point, Ontario (built in the 1850’s). The Building was originally the lockmasters house at Lock 27 on the Trent Severn Waterway, and the home of the Stoney Lake Navigation Company, a steamboat company that offered transportation for the area. Lockside Trading Company was born when owner Susan Mattucci began the business with her then-partner, the late Brian Holmes, to pursue a dream of country living and fulfill the need for a store in Kawartha Lakes cottage country. Over the past 31 years, the store has grown from a tiny 400 square foot shop to now covering more than 7000 square feet in size, and a 3 time national awards winning retailer. Operating year round and attracting more than 100,000 visitors a year, so many in fact, that in 1997 it was classified as an Ontario Major Attraction making Young’s Point a happening place.

Keeping Your Hilltop View

when Accessibility is an Issue

Do you have a family cottage on a stunning hillside that comes with the most spectacular view? We know in order to use and enjoy this picturesque location, there is usually a long, steep climb. While the climb may be easy for the young and healthy, for others it can be challenging or even impossible, meaning an end to the much-anticipated and highly-valued cottage time with family and friends. Inclined Elevation Inc., Bracebridge, was founded in 2006 by John Weinstein, PhD. John has been building lifts since 2003, with his team of highly-skilled professionals, John is dedicated to building the safest and most reliable, durable, and attractive cottage lifts imaginable. Inclined Elevation has enabled many cottage owners to eliminate their hillside troubles and gain, or regain, complete vertical freedom. In addition to his extensive experience in the lift building business, John has a wide range of experience in many areas including aircraft mechanics, house, boat and automobile rebuilding, theoretical particle physics, teaching, and industrial consulting. He brings these skills together and personally designs and supervises the manufacture of every lift.

walk-out access to the water may seem desirable to some, a property high off the water offers privacy, panoramic scenery, and breezes that help keep bugs away. With a lift, all the disadvantages of these properties become advantages. Many beautiful properties in cottage country are treacherous hillside lots where owners and guests have a hard time enjoying the use of their land. When these are island cottages, the living logistics are an even greater chore. Lifts make transporting groceries as well as people easier, use them for moving building materials, appliances, and other large items with ease. With a lift, the dock becomes another room at the cottage to enjoy. A lift not only increases accessibility for everyone, but also increases the value and marketability of your challenging property. How to be the

Perfect Cottage Guest Follow our trusted tips on how to be the perfect cottage guest and we bet you’ll be asked back again and again. PACK WISELY – Cottage weekends are meant to be casual affairs so a few casual shirts, shorts, jeans and relaxed comfy (and even warm) clothing are the order of the day. Reminder - DON’T FORGET your swimsuit! TOILETRIES – ALWAYS bring your own toiletries. Parents are reminded to also pack essentials for their kids too. Added bonus bring biodegradable products; your hosts will recognize your nod to the environment.

books and crossword puzzles. Here are some additional things we encourage you to do, once you arrive. KITCHEN PATROL – Some hosts opt to clean up the kitchen themselves, but most really appreciate when guests pitch in. Be that guest! KEEP IT TIDY – When moving about the cottage, tidy up after yourself. Return reading materials, pillows, cozy throws and everything else you use to their rightful place.

SHEETS & TOWELS – We think it good form to bring your own sheets and towels, both bath and beach. Doing so will boost your “good guest” rating, guaranteed.

PETS – If your hosts invite your pet up for the weekend too, bring extra towels for wet and muddy paws and always pick up after your pet.

BYOB – Bringing your own beverages is a must. Whether refreshing non-alcoholic drinks or the more potent variety (beer, wine and spirits) bring enough to cover what you and your family will consume. Don’t forget your mixes too!

DEPARTURE – Before heading off, make sure you have all of your personal belongings. It’s also helpful to help clean and tidy up the cottage.

FOOD – Offer to prepare one or more of the meals during your stay, then bring all the necessary ingredients and make that meal count! ENTERTAINMENT – Think about bringing some fun weekend enhancements like board games, magazines, weekend crafts, good

Tubing develops confidence in the water, helps with fundamental skills like hanging on, and allows riders to understand what it’s like being behind the boat. Recently we started our toddler tubing, and it has been incredible seeing her start to enjoy time behind the boat. Tubing is the perfect beginning to anyone’s water sport journey. With thousands of tubes and towables on the market choose something appropriate for the boat you are towing with. Inflatable towables are light out of water, however in the lake they hold water inside the material making them heavy. So, although the giant 5 person tube looks like a blast, when you put it behind your aluminum boat and 25hp motor it just won’t have the guts to make it fun. When towing young kids, a tube that they can sit in while being towed at low speeds ensures a safe, fun experience for kids as young as 3. If taking kids younger than 3, I recommend what we did with our daughter, use a larger, flat tube commonly known as a biscuit tube. We went on the tube with her, offering an extra sense of security. When tubing with young children the

water sports rule of a short sweet experiences applies. A tow rope specifically designed for towing tubes is important, as they have extra strength and stretch compared to a standard ski or wakeboard rope. They have more buoyancy, are larger in diameter and are more visible; and are normally a single rope with no extensions - making them stronger and less prone to failure. Buy a rope matched to the size of your tube. Ropes are rated for the amount of people an inflatable is designed to tow, so if you have the big tube - you need the big rope. Driving for tubing is perhaps the most important part; the tube is permanently attached to the boat, so the driver needs to stay continually mindful. Keep the rope from gaining slack which could harm participants, be aware of cornering, even if your boat is traveling slowly through a turn the pendulum motion of the tube can reach unsafe speeds. Lastly, always utilize a spotter with clear, agreed upon signals between the participant and boat. By Jay Poole, Buckeye Marine www.buckeyemarine.com

Stingray Boats Making Families Smile, One Boat at a Time Stingray Boats began almost 40 years ago with little more than two molds, a few skilled craftsmen, and a man with a passion to build great performing boats. That passion has endured, and continues today. Boat building is not just a business at Stingray; it’s a part of who they are - building boats that families and friends make lifelong memories on. Stingray Boats offer both performance and value among competitors in the marine industry. What many don’t realize is that the Stingray performance is what gives their boats such great value. Stingrays’ Z-plane hull has always rivaled competitors. Founded in 1979, Stingray owner and founder, Al Fink, has been committed to building a great performing boat, and still is today. This drive to keep improving has resulted in a hull that requires modest power to run when compared to competitor models with additional engine power. It’s not just impressive performance that makes a Stingray a great boat. Internally, Stingray uses vertical integration to reduce costs and maintain control over supply and demand of components that go into every Stingray boat. Many of the parts and pieces such as sundecks, bench seats, bow seats, compartment doorframes, and tables (to name a few) are made in-house from raw materials; instead of sourcing prebuilt parts. This allows for a reduction in part costs, specific selection of individual materials, minimal inventory stocking with a just-intime process schedule to meet current production needs, as well as the end result of custom items that are made just for Stingray boats; making Stingray one of the best boat deals on the water. Stingray, a privately owned, family run company focuses on building quality, not quantity; while providing customers with the assurance that they are getting the most boat for the best price. This has been the driving force of Stingray for almost four decades, and has provided them the honor of having two-time, three-time, and even four-time Stingray boat owners! It is this loyal following that will continue to drive their passion to keep building great boats for many years to come. Visit Anstruther Marina today to learn all about how a Stingray boat will fit perfectly into your lifestyle. Anstruther Marina, www.anstrutherlakemarina.com (705) 656-4783 Advertisement

Deck Talk with Dave Summer seems like it has finally arrived and if you are like me, you love to spend a lot of time on your deck, enjoying the weather and some quality time with friends and family. To truly enjoy your deck, you need to make sure that it is safe while still looking good. A thorough inspection of your deck will help you determine if it is time to replace it, or just simply spruce it up. Start with the substructure. All posts and piers should be straight, and there should only be minimal cracking or warping of the wood. While you are under the deck, check the floor joists for rot. Even treated wood will rot in time, and should always be replaced prior to using the deck. The ledger board is the piece that is attached to the house. It needs to be properly attached with long bolts through the rim joist of the house. If you do not have access to the underside of the cottage you can use lag bolts with washers every two feet. Ensure that you use bolts that are made for treated wood.

aluminum panels, vinyl or even cedar. These products are typically a bit more money, but worth it in the long run. There are many products available at most building centers, and they will help you choose the right product for you. If you think your deck is not quite safe enough, don’t hesitate to replace it entirely. There are local contractors that are qualified and up to date on the code limitations. They will also offer experience and perhaps new design ideas that you might not have considered. Your deck is a gathering place, so make sure that it’s safe - and then make it look good. Happy Decking By Dave Linkert Site Supervisor, Port 32 Marshall Homes

The floor joists need to have joist hangers to secure them to the ledger board, use joist hanger nails to secure. If using screws for any of the attachments, use ones that are appropriately sized and something that won’t rust. A lot of people use deck screws for construction, but they are simply not strong enough to hold any weight. They are made to hold down deck boards, that’s all. A guardrail, known as the railing is very specific as to the height and attachment details. The information is available on the O.B.C. website under SB-7. The railing is an important safety feature, as well as a design feature. If you plan on replacing the deck boards, consider composites,

How Negative Emotions Brain Injury Support Group to Start Affect Your Health in Peterborough Negative emotions can seem so difficult to shake in our modern world. They can come from many places and be different for each person. In my practice as a Certified Emotion Code practitioner, the most common negative emotions that I treat are anger, fear, guilt, grief, anxiety and low self-esteem. In the short term, negative emotions may ruin your day but otherwise have little to no effect on your quality of life. But, if they linger for weeks, months, or even years, they can have devastating and irreparable effects to your physical health by causing the production of “stress” hormones cortisol and adrenaline resulting in pain and inflammation which has been scientifically proven to be the clinical root of pain and many diseases. In his book “The Sacred Life,” author David Suzuki explains that negative emotions are a literal, measurable toxin that can be detected in exhalation. A highly potent toxin that you may be holding inside yourself day after day. An example of trapped negative energy/emotion at a physical level is a client I had with chronic pain in his left knee. He had not injured his knee and had no explanation as to why it was sore. He had been to doctors, massage therapists and others with no improvement. After a few treatments to release some identified negative emotions, the pain went away and has not come back. Negative emotions can also affect your emotional and mental health as well. I deal with many “abused” women. These women are “filled” with fear and low self-esteem at a cellular level. When trying to make a life decision to get out of their situation, they look at life from a lens of fear and can’t leave. After several treatments to release fear/guilt/low self esteem or more, they can start making decisions in their life from an unbiased emotional perspective. From Police Officers with PTSD to children with anxiety to folks grieving a loss, Emotion Code can help to get your life back! Lynn Anne Hill is an Energy Practitioner and is a Reiki Master and Teacher, an Emotion Code Practitioner & Therapeutic Touch Practitioner. She can be reached at 705 872-8357 or lynnhill113@gmail.com

Hibernation of the Soul It's so easy to get enveloped by the stresses of life... so many responsibilities... so many places to go, things to do... bills to pay. Hope in our dreams can begin to dwindle away as we struggle getting from one day to the next... with all that is weighing us down. Time passes by so quickly, and we wonder how we missed so much of life along the way. Sitting outside... the fresh air cascading accross your skin... you breathe deeply and sigh. Closing your eyes as the sun creates streams of light behind your eyelids that soothe you...the feeling is so healing. Grateful for the moment as it washes over you... you can't recall the last time you felt this relaxed. Such a simple thing after all, isn't it? As your soul and body yearn for more, you begin noticing the reactions in your body. Your focus goes to relaxing your stomach... a place where many of us wear our stresses. Why don't I do this more often?, you wonder...thinking something that feels this good, surely there is time somewhere for more moments like these? Now keenly aware of nature and life around you...a feeling of heaviness comes over you as you realize how many years have passed... just how long life has had your soul, in what seems a state of hibernation... only to emerge on special occasions... holidays and vacations. You determine to yourself that you want to plan

more of these kinds of moments. Creating positive habits is all about repetition. If you plan purposefully to

"make time for you in your life... that's when the magic really happens." Peace and happiness are extremely contagious and an impossible secret to keep. In no time, those around you begin to notice ...and they too want this new thing that you have found. I think one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is to teach them how to be contemplative and how to be alone and to nourish their own spirit. There will be good days and there will be bad days and many of each in life... cherish the good, learn from the bad and always keep moving forward. No matter how hard life is, or how busy life gets... making time to savor moments all around you, gives you the energy and the joy to face the future with new strength. Spend time getting connected with yourself, with nature and with those you love. You can't share or give to others, what you don't first already have, inside of yourself to give. Donna Matthews

How to Help & Handle an Injured Turtle From the Ontario Turtle Conservation Center 1. Carefully place the injured animal in a well-ventilated plastic container with a secure lid (turtles can climb!). 2. Most turtles can be picked up carefully with two hands. When handling snapping turtles keep a safe distance from their head as they will snap at you if they feel threatened. You may want to use a shovel or board to lift the turtle. 3. Note the location (road, major intersections, and mileage) where the turtle was found to ensure it can be released according to provincial regulations. 4. Call the Ontario Turtle Conservation Center at 705-741-5000 5. DO NOT EMAIL WITH INFORMATION ABOUT AN INJURED TURTLE. An injured animal needs medical attention as soon as possible! 6. Do not transport turtles in water. Do not offer the turtle anything to eat. 7. Wash your hands after handling the animal. If you have to keep a turtle overnight, place it in a well-ventilated container with no water and in a cool, dark place, away from pets. Leave us a message and we will get back to you when we open. Never attempt to treat a sick or injured wild animal yourself. Always contact your nearest licensed Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

If the turtle is NOT injured Here’s what to do: • DO NOT remove a turtle from their area – it reduces their chances of survival. If you find an uninjured turtle in the middle of a road, and it is safe for you to do so, simply help it across the road in the direction it is moving. • DO NOT dig up nests to protect the eggs – you may damage the eggs AND it is against the law. • The Turtle Conservation Centre is primarily volunteer-run, we do not have a pick-up service. • The centre accepts injured native turtles only – NOT unwanted pets. Outside of Peterborough If you live outside of Peterborough, call 705-741-5000. We work with over 30 Turtle First Response Centres across Ontario – these are private clinics, or rehabilitators that we have trained in emergency treatment for turtles; the availability of these varies so please call us to arrange. We will be able to direct you to the appropriate one, while transfer to our hospital is being organized. From the Ontario Turtle Conservation Center. To learn more, go to www.ontarioturtle.ca

An Evolution in Shopping Following the Industrial Revolution, shop windows full of massmanufactured products were a common sight in Peterborough. By the 1890s, bartering or trading for goods and custom-made items became less common. Timothy Eaton started T. Eaton & Co. in Toronto in 1869 (later known as 'Eaton's' which was once Canada's largest department store). Every item was marked with a fixed price; trading and haggling were unacceptable. Eaton's would take items back if the customer was not satisfied, and carried a wider selection of premade products at lower prices than small stores offered. These conveniences made stores like Eaton's soar in popularity. Eaton's first mail order catalogue, produced in 1884, was targeted towards women. During the Victorian Era, jobs for women created in offices and factories were changing the way women dressed and how much time they spent at home. The catalogue quickly developed to sell mass produced clothing and goods. Like the Internet today, the mail order catalogue allowed for the ease of shopping from home. Depicted in the family portrait is John Craig Eaton who was the son of Timothy Eaton, alongside his children – Timothy Craig and John David (baby) – and his wife Flora Eaton (nee McCrae). J.C. Eaton took over as president of Eaton's following the death of his father. With this title, he greatly expanded the company. He was

EXPLODING BAGGIES SCIENCE EXPERIMENT FOR KIDS

Kids like to see things explode and with this easy experiment they can watch the bags fill with gas and pop in front of them. Here’s what you need • Plastic Bags (we used medium size Ziploc bags and doubled the amount of vinegar and baking soda) • Clothespins • Food Coloring • 1/3 cup Vinegar (for each bag) • 2 Tbsp Baking Soda (for each bag) • Safety glasses Pour the vinegar into a bag and add food coloring to it. Twist the baggie just above the liquid (make sure to leave room at the top for the baking soda) and secure with a clothespin. Add the baking soda to the empty space and seal the bag. When ready, remove the clothespin and allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar. Watch as the bags fill with gas and explode in a fizzing mess! It took us a couple of tries to figure out the right amount needed for our bag size. We also discovered that if we add less vinegar to the baking soda it creates a fun sand mixture that the kids enjoyed playing with.

Innovation in Apsely Small town entrepreneurship is alive and well in Apsley. For one local man, changes in business have taken him from a small contractor to the builder of dreams. Andy Assinck has lived in Apsley for 35 years and began Assinck Contracting, specialising in repairs, renovations and new builds. Always thinking ahead, Andy developed a new product, turning porches, decks and screen rooms in to Dream Rooms - Dream view Enclosures Inc. Knowing people like to enjoy the outdoors even when weather doesn’t permit; Andy developed a system of clear shutter panels that protect from the elements, while still offering a view. With 100% air flow, everyone can enjoy relaxing with no worries about bugs, rain, wind or snow. These systems come in 2 types: The Hide a Way - which offers storage at the bottom for the clear panels, or The Trim to Fit offering floor to ceiling views. Consider turning un-used or poorly used space into a whole new room. Panels are self-storing, and cleaning is done from the inside, making it quick and easy. These enclosures can become part of your existing home or cottage or, build a Serenity Hut on your property. Serenity Huts are custom built, and offer a peaceful escape. Watch the sun set, or go to your quiet meditation room. Andy has also developed something that cottagers and lake residents will find unique and extremely helpful. Who has lost parts while putting in the dock? Who has gotten cold, or wet while doing it? With the Dock HitcHinge Couplers these issues are avoided. Dock HitcHinge couplers are a new way to set up your dock. The Peterborough Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, membership-driven association that advocates on behalf of the Peterborough business community. Members of Chambers across Ontario, including yours truly, loudly and firmly stated their displeasure with one aspect of their government’s Bill 148 which introduced several updates to the Employment Standards Act. That aspect was the public holiday pay formula – the method used by employers to compensate employees for time off (or worked) on statutory holidays. The new method looked only at the employee’s prior pay period and paid an average of the amount of that paycheque divided by the numbers of days worked in that period. That presented a huge issue for employers of part-time and casual employees because that individual now could receive as much as a full day’s pay for the holiday if they only worked one day in that prior pay period. Payroll costs for some businesses were skyrocketing and that had not been the government’s intention. Several meetings, conference calls, letters and emails later, the Minister of Labour determined that this part of Bill 148 needed further review. It was announced that the method used to calculate statutory (or public) holiday pay would be rolled back to the old method for the period July 1 to December 31, 2018. This means that the Victoria Day holiday was calculated using the new method, but Canada Day and subsequent statutory holidays will use the pre-2018 method of an average of pay over the previous four work weeks divided by 20. Advocacy does work and it is ongoing by business organizations like the Chamber. Whether you add your voice through membership or not, submissions to the Ministry of Labour are encouraged to ensure that when the review period is completed, the method used to pay employees for statutory holidays is fair to all employees and employers. Prior to the financial crisis of 2007 Canadians never knew that central bank interest rates could ever be zero, or negative as in the case of Europe. GIC rates were typically above 4 per cent and being offered a mortgage of 6 per cent was considered a good deal. Things changed drastically after the crisis and those days seem like a distant memory, especially for the younger generation. Getting 2 per cent on a GIC has been painful for those living on a fixed income, but the sub 3 per cent mortgage rates that followed was a blessing for those in debt. Unfortunately, it has also led to a rapid increase in household debt and some of this has been associated with households acquiring secondary properties and increasing their lines of credit alongside the appreciation in their home values. Currently, Canadians have the highest ratio of household debt to disposable income on record and the risk is that the days of ultra low borrowing costs disappear.

Since 1994

This has already begun as the Bank of Canada has lifted its official overnight rate back above 1 per cent and bond yields have pushed up to the highest level since 2011. Term mortgage rates have also started to creep up and if you have an adjustable mortgage or line of credit then you will have seen this reflected in the wake of higher prime rates. For those who have budgeted for an escalation in higher borrowing costs, this new environment may not be a challenge. For all others there is going to be a shock. In the very least, higher interest rates could cause households to curtail spending on other areas. At worst, it could force liquidation of assets, including secondary properties.

The solution to the dilemma facing Canadians is not simple, but it starts with a recognition of whether overleverage exists, an examination of the household balance sheet to see if it is stress tested against even higher rates, reduction in debt and potentially a change in lifestyle. The sooner this is done, the better. By Andrew Pyle, MA, CFP, CIM, FMA, FCSI Branch Manager, Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager, Scotia McLeod The Pyle Group, www.pylegroup.ca 705-876-3701

Unlock The Summer Blues Brothers Tribute comes to Bobcaygeon June 9th The Soul Brothers, Chris and Geoff Dahl, real brothers from London, Ontario, Canada mastered their craft as bluesmen in the early 90s while performing and recording with several R&B/Blues/ Pop recording acts including Black Avalon (A&M records) Cassandra Vasik (Epic records) The Bushdoctors (A&M records), Melody Currant (Motown/Universal) and the world famous Old Chicago’s Blues Band (Speakeasy Records). During this time, the brothers (who both sing and play all instruments including guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and harmonica) shared the stage with some of the world’s top R&B legends including Buddy Guy, BB King, Chicago Pete, Downchild Blues Band, Powder Blues Band, The Contours, The Miracles, Martha Reeves, Dutch Mason & Jeff Healy to name a few. 29 Years of Country Music for Havelock Jamboree 2018 marks the 29th Annual Havelock Country Jamboree. Canada’s Largest Live Country Music and Camping Festival! The festival features over 25 entertainers performing on twin stages over a 4 day period. Enjoy the experience of a lifetime August 16, 17, 18 & 19, 2018. The Havelock Jamboree is a camping and music festival with a festive, friendly, community atmosphere where music fans can enjoy their favourite performers. While strolling the park-like grounds, check out the wares of the vendors and visit the booths of the numerous local service clubs and charities. Others, however, are making their first appearance at the now venerable music festival. The newly built, one of a kind twin stages have held over 5000 musicians over the past 28 years. The 2018 lineup features Toby Keith, Dean Brody, Tim Hicks, Tanya Tucker, Doc Walker, Charlie Major, Hunter Brothers, Ned LeDoux and The Wilkinsons, just to name a few. Summer Variety at Lindsay’s Academy Theatre Shows coming up at downtown Lindsay’s historic Academy Theatre offer plenty of choice, including a series of intimate concerts in our casual second floor lounge, two offerings of theatrical fare (a farce and a Broadway musical), a superb trio (backed by a trio of instrumentalists) performing anything from pop to jazz to stage musical numbers, plus some great tribute shows. Monthly TIFF screenings continue, too. Our Upstairs Series concerts run every other Thursday beginning June 14 when Red, White and Ace will provide their lively harmonies and guitar playing. Future acts include Peterborough’s Rick & Gailie Trio, Nicole Lisa Craig (formerly Nicole Coward), Randy Read & Bob May, Kim Doolittle Duo and Hannah Lucas-Brouwer. We only seat 50 people in these events, so get your tickets early! On July 7 we’re thrilled to present Broadsway – featuring a

brilliant combination of fabulous voices, clever arrangements, excellent music, and side-splitting humour. Heather Bambrick (JUNO-nominee; National Jazz Award Vocalist of the Year), Diane Leah (Dora Mavor Moore Award nominee), and Julie Michels (international artist) combine their respective musical experience and influences in a show that is eclectic, funny, and very musical! For theatre buffs, we’re welcoming back Lindsay Little Theatre with their production of the madcap British farce See How They Run July 20th and 21st. In August, Triple Threat Theatre is back to present the everpopular Broadway show Annie. Tribute shows will honour the music of Elton John, U2, Motown, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and Jon Bon Jovi.
