WINDOW REPLACEMENT SAVINGS As the warmer months come, you may be thinking about replacing windows at your home or cottage. You can contact Lifestyle to see if you qualify for the government’s 2018 Green Ontario Fund incentive. This may mean a cash back window rebate of up to $5,000 on replacement windows. Lifestyle is an approved Green Ontario window provider. Lifestyle manufactures quality, CSA certified, Energy Star® Validated, and Harmonized Tested windows. Installed by their precision experts, Lifestyle window installations come with a lifetime guarantee. A LIFETIME ROOF Lifestyle installs metal roofing shingles, designed and developed to resist our harsh climates and extreme variations of temperature. They also resist punctures from falling branches and flying debris, hot burning embers, sparks blowing out of your fireplace chimney and the punishment of the hot summer sun. Because of their exceptional ability to shed snow, steel roofing panels are also ideal for isolated seasonal homes and cottages. Snow slides off the roof when the weather becomes milder, preventing water leaks from melting snow, and collapsing roofs from heavy snow loads. Lifestyle’s metal roofing comes with a lifetime transferable warranty. Contact Lifestyle Home Products for a free quote at 1-800-465-0593 or visit LifestyleHomeProducts.ca. Colour of the Year The gardening community was excited when Pantone, a well-known colour expert company, announced that the Colour of the Year for 2018 was Ultra Purple. Last year, to stay “on trend” the colour to integrate in your garden was Greenery – how easy was that? In 2018, adding tones of purple will be intentional. Splashes of lavender, purple and rosy blues will POP amid green leaves and will contrast with variegated leaves.
or purple. In impatiens (and yes, they will be back, in small quantities, in many local garden centres) mixtures with bright violet or even violet on its own will shine in shady gardens. Always be careful though, in deep shade gardens to avoid too many deep, dark colours; rich dark shades are lost in the shadows and it’s best to add in white or lighter shades of the same dark hue to brighten the darkness.
For annuals (and yes, all good gardens have a combination of colourful annuals and valuable perennials) consider the beautiful blooms of petunias, impatiens and geraniums. Each of these garden basics bloom in many shades, but one of the most popular for all three is violet
Other annuals to consider in hues of violet: salvia, dahlias, ageratum, cleome, coleus, fountain grass, ornamental cabbage and kale, alyssum and verbena.
Since 1994
Purple or violet blooms are not as common in perennials; some to note may not bloom
purple but feature purple leaves: heuchera (coral bells), lupins, ground phlox, tall garden phlox, coneflowers malva, delphiniums and flowering shrubs such as weigela, ninebark and hydrangeas. A simple, less permanent way to integrate a specific colour in the garden is to add colourful accents. How about purple outdoor cushions on patio furniture? Or why not paint metal furniture, a trellis or a wire obelisk with a can of Ultra Violet spray paint? Have fun and be “on trend” for 2018! What’s in a Dock? When I write, I like to sit with a cup of coffee and quietly wait for visions of the lake to inspire me. I always close my eyes and think of myself sitting by the water, breathing in the fresh summer air. This time around, I wanted to write about community and how lake life brings us together. How friends and family relax and let go when they’re at the lake. I could hear the laughter of our kids. I could see towels haphazardly thrown over plastic Adirondack chairs. Flippers and snorkels and paddles strewn around. Bright coloured kayaks tied loosely off the corner of the dock bumping about from the ripples and waves created by little humans boisterously splashing and hollering at each other in the water. Dogs stand guard at the edge of the dock barking and happily pacing back and forth not wanting to miss out on the fun; eagerly waiting for waterlogged sticks to be thrown in and retrieved. Adults, armed with beer cans, plastic wine glasses and SPF 85 for their children, chat happily, tossing parental glances at swimming children. Picnic baskets filled with watermelon slices, crunchy potato chips and trail mix are passed back and forth. Boats come and go, canoes are sent off, paddles and fishing rods are grabbed. And when the sun begins to set, and we watch the stars come out; it’s where the swimmers return to. Where the paddlers end their journey. Where the fishermen bring in their haul. It’s where we dip our toes in and watch water spiders lazily skim across the evening water. It’s where we congregate. Where we relax. Where we laugh. Where we learn. It’s where our days are spent. Our evenings enjoyed. It’s the heart of our lake life. We always talk about lake life and cottage life. But one should never forget about the dock life. Kennedy's One of the Longest Running Family Owned & Operated Appliance & Electronics Retailers in Canada
Kennedy’s (Earl Kennedy Electric LTD) started in 1932 with its founder Earl Kennedy who repaired radios in Lindsay, Ontario. Earl and his wife, Muriel who managed the office worked hard to build their store through difficult times during the war. After 1946 he expanded into appliances and TVs. Earl had two sons Garry and Dale who joined the family business in the early 1960s. The two generations of Kennedys worked side by side, selling and repairing appliances, radios and TV’s. A huge boost in sales came in 1968 when color TV was born. The men couldn’t deliver them fast enough. At the end of the 60’s Earl and Muriel were ready to pass the torch on to the next generation, Garry and Dale purchased the business in 1969. Under new ownership the two brothers divided and conquered; Garry heading up appliances, Dale running with Electronics and Garry’s wife Pat managing the office. They had a lot of help from their team, some of whom remain at Kennedy’s to

this day. Some of those who continue with the store today include Bruce Buckley (service), Cynthia Walker (office) and Terry Louden (installation). These long-term employees, have been instrumental in the longevity of Kennedy’s, and as Zack says, “Their last names might be different, but they are family.” Dale and Garry’s children also worked at Kennedy’s during their teenager years, making it truly a family business. Kennedy’s has pursued various innovations over the years. Many people remember coming in with their parents to get $2 movie rentals for the weekend. From radios in the 30’s to cutting edge technology in electronics and appliances today, Kennedy’s continues to offer customers the latest in technology. Perhaps this is why in 2018, after eighty-six years of business, Kennedy’s is now serving 4th generation customers - something few stores get to experience. In 2012 Garry and Dale found themselves talking about the future of Kennedy’s. In his seventies with over fifty years of partnership with his brother, Garry and Pat

were ready to retire. As an eighty two year old business, with the ever present competition from large box stores, the conversation to close up shop or forge ahead was upon them. Dale, the younger of the two brothers, wasn’t quite ready to call it quits. He felt that there was still great opportunity and felt what was needed was an individual with drive and passion. Someone, who could invest the time, hard work and dedication into the business. This was a tough request since his partner was retiring, and Garry’s daughter Catherine Kennedy who was in her 10th year at Kennedy’s wanted to pursue something new. Who would lead this 81yr old family business forward? Dale’s son Zack had worked in automotive sales for most of his professional career, and was the logical choice to come on board. Dale approached Zack who was then just thirty, to join the Sales team at Kennedy’s. Zack was currently in his seventh year at Lindsay Buick GMC, and had never really had a serious desire to be part of the family business. As Zack says, he wanted to make his own path, “I always loved the outdoors and I wanted to pursue a career in the environment.” In his early 20's, Zack went to college with that passion in mind, and graduated with two diplomas. After a few years of contract work, he found himself selling cars in Markham at a BMW dealership, “What can I say? It must be in my blood! I love people and I love sales.” After almost a year honing his skills in the very difficult GTA car market, Zack started at Lindsay Buick. Garry retired in April of 2013 and Zack joined the team. The changing of the guard was a bitter sweet moment of saying goodbye, but also looking towards a bright and new future for the store. While Zack left behind his fondness of automotive sales, as he says, “the car business will always be there, but a family store that my grandfather started....that’s never going to come again.” With father and son at the helm, and Zack leading the charge with Dale’s guidance, they remodeled the showroom, constructed a much larger warehouse and built up their team. Zack tells us,
“we have the best team in the business, it’s the people under the roof that makes a business successful, period.” The last 5 years have been very important to Kennedy’s and for Zack personally, this was going to determine whether it was the right move to leave an excellent job to run his own business. Zack and his team went full open building up relationships, securing the very best products and marketing Kennedy’s as the better choice over the box stores, encouraging people to keep their money local. In the early months of this year Zack’s purchase of the store became final, and with this third passing of the torch, Kennedy’s future looks very bright. Speaking with Zack for just a moment tells you how passionate he is about his family’s business and what it stands for. He tells us he wants to see a hundred years, which is an unbelievable achievement for any business. Zack comments, “We have changed a lot of things at Kennedy’s, but two things remain: our commitment to customer service, and our dedication to our community through sponsorships, donations, charities, and fundraisers.”
Since 1994
Zack and his team aren’t interested in being the biggest, they are only interested in being the best. Come in and see Zack and the staff at Kennedy’s for your next cottage kitchen renovation, laundry room makeover, or a 150” projector for the mancave. Access Issues Getting to the Cottage For many of us, who are fortunate enough, the weekend getaway to the family cottage is an important, and fun, part of our lives. Many more of us are dreaming and hoping to find that perfect getaway spot from the hustle and bustle of urban and suburban living. As part of any decision to purchase a cottage property, the sometimes complex or confusing matter of legal access to the cottage is an important consideration. While your townhouse in the subdivision is typically readily accessible from a municipally owned and maintained road, that is not always the case with cottage properties.
Often, access is via what's called a “'Trespass" or "Forced" Road. Deeded ownership of such roads is typically held by private individuals, but the municipality maintains the road, and the public can use it. Also common is access through a registered "right-of-way" across someone else's property. Here, you obtain a deed to your cottage, you're also purchasing the right to use the right-of-way that comes with it. Less common are unregistered easements or rights-of-way. Here, although there is no "deeded" access through a registered easement, historical use can create a legal right to cross another person's property to get to yours. Occasionally, access to a cottage property is via a private road, title held by several neighbouring cottagers, or through an incorporated cottager’s association. When it comes to these atypical accesses, the issue of maintenance of same is also important. Care should be taken to ensure one understands what obligations there may be to contribute financially to maintenance, insurance, etc. While generally, such obligations are clear and unambiguous, sometimes there can be some uncertainty. Even some municipally owned roads are only maintained seasonally, and in fact, a municipality may in fact decide to change a year-round maintained road into a seasonally maintained road! It might impact your winter getaway plans! Whenever you are considering purchasing a rural property, cottage or otherwise, it is important to get good, experienced legal advice, advice that covers the important issue of how you get to the cottage. HALIBURTON FOREST & WILD LIFE RESERVE
Come Wander
the Haliburton Highlands Rich in breath-taking scenery and culture alike, there is no doubt that once you have made the visit to the Haliburton Highlands, the County will forever live in your heart. Lovingly referred to as “The Highlands”- perhaps because it is the highest body of land in Ontario, or maybe the similarity to the Highlands of Scotland, or even because of the Scottish settlers who worked so hard to make the Highlands home. Whether it is a day trip, a weekend away, or a family vacation, the Highlands have something for everyone. Haliburton hosts numerous trails for all terrain vehicles, cycling, horseback riding, walking and hiking. There is a huge opportunity to get to know the hiking trails with the annual Hike Haliburton Festival in the fall, offering over 100 guided hikes. Geocaching and rock hounding are also popular in
Haliburton. With a property of 100,000 acres, Haliburton Forest gives you room to explore the great outdoors. Whether you are witnessing it from the ground, or from the treetops, Haliburton Forest is a well-managed slice of Canada’s natural forest and crystal-clear lakes. There are 600 bodies of water in the area with 60 Lakes. A bit of fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sailing or wake-boarding perhaps? For others, maybe relaxation comes in the form of a good book and the perfect tree, with a cool drink, enjoying the sounds of nature as you read. Whatever your pleasure, there is much on offer.

The Haliburton Highlands have acquired the nickname “Nature’s Work of Art”. There are studios dotted around the County housing many artists and their original, and beautiful works of art in all mediums. The Haliburton County Studio Fall Tour and Tour de Forest Mid-Summer Tour are popular, and when the studios are open you can see the artists at work. Art displays can be seen all year at Minden Cultural Centre, The Rails End Gallery or stroll through the splendid work of international artists at the Haliburton Sculpture Forest. Haliburton County is also home to Fleming College’s School of Art + Design, which is one of Canada’s largest art colleges. In addition to their year-round programs, they also offer over 250 week-long courses for children and adults throughout the summer. The Highlands Summer Festival offers several excellent plays and is usually a sold-out event. This year the big undertaking is Romeo and Juliet. There is also the Highlands Opera Studio whose concerts are usually enjoyed later in the summer.
ABBEY GARDENS
If its concerts you are looking for, there are theatrical, literary performances and festivals throughout the year. One of the more popular festivals being the Forest Festival which takes place under the stars at The Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve. Take a walk back through time at one of seven museums throughout the County. Some offer children and families information on historical life, through day programs throughout the year. Some say that everything old becomes new again, and this seems to be the case with Agriculture in the Haliburton Highlands. More than a century ago, rocky landscapes defeated farming, but that is not stopping a new generation from giving agriculture a chance; and they are succeeding. Watch for the seasonal Farmer’s Markets that take place around the county, rich in local fare.

While travelling around the Highlands there is no lack of places to eat. You will find everything from fast food, to fine dining, plus all food tastes better when you enjoy it in the fresh air and sunshine. As a guest visiting the Haliburton Highlands, the very best part is becoming unplugged, sitting on the dock or deck or around a bonfire with family and friends. You can stay at one of the many resorts or contact WRD Cottage Rental Agency and they would be happy to host you at one of their private waterfront cottages. #ComeWander #HaliburtonHighlands WRD Cottage Rental Agency, OntarioCottageRental.com 705-457-9434

Creating Your
Outdoor Oasis When shopping for new patio furniture, we all want to get the best quality for the money we are spending. What can seem like a large purchase can last through many, many seasons if you choose the furniture that best suits your outdoor space, and family needs. When you choose quality, it lasts. Look for a manufacturer that offers solution dyed acrylics when it comes to the fabric used to make patio furniture cushions and umbrellas. Many big box stores will sometimes use polyester materials, and unfortunately these fabrics fade quickly, and are unable to resist UV rays and weather, breaking down and deteriorating much quicker. Another question many people ask is whether patio furniture can safely be left outside through the winter months, as cottagers and homeowners know, when you bring in all the seasonal ‘stuff’ – you quickly run out of storage space. When you choose a furniture that is made of aluminum or recycled plastic it can be left outside all winter long with a sturdy furniture cover.
Since 1994
A great way to update your outdoor furniture is to add an accent piece to your entertaining space. A splash of colour with new accent cushions, or a trendy side table goes a long way in refreshing the look of your space. Rova’s Outdoor Furnishing carries several premium brands of outdoor furnishings – like Sunbrella, that won’t fade. Feel confident buying superior furniture from Rova made of high quality materials such as extruded aluminum, durawood, composite, and all season wicker. Ditch the cushions this summer with their new lines of fast drying sling supported furniture! “One of the biggest and most beautiful showrooms I’ve ever stepped foot into, you can tell when employees take pride in the store. 10/10 Stars” - Tim J Lakefield, Ontario Rova’s Patio www.rovapatio.com, 705-876-9707 Advertisement

Those Were The Days
“Recognizing Our Heroes" I have written in previous columns the many times I sat with my Dad at the kitchen table perusing news of the war. It was 1944 and I was creeping up on my tenth birthday, D Day was blazing across the headlines and Dad patiently explained the highs and lows of WWII, the victories, the defeats and the sadness of ongoing casualty lists. It wasn’t until I was in my mid teens Dad mentioned a group of nurses who braved battle zones and hazardous flights caring for the wounded aboard airplanes evacuating the injured to safe areas. I learned the nurses were dubbed the Flying Nightingales. I found this very interesting because my grandmother’s nee name was Nightingale, she was of similar age and we believe a cousin to Florence Nightingale. The Flying Nightingales were a group of 200 nurses who were assigned to accompany wounded soldiers away from the battlefield. The nurses who made up the RAF’s Air Ambulance Unit were given the task of keeping the severely wounded men not only alive but comfortable until they reached hospitals, doctors and operating rooms. Each flight carried one nurse who attend to approximately twenty wounded men. Their danger areas included Africa and Europe, even D Day and the months following, placed precariously into ongoing battles and subjected to enemy fighter planes during the dangerous trips to safety. The Flying Nightingales were credited with saving the lives of over 100,000 wounded military personnel, truly a group of women we should remember with great pride. Many of us have probably seen the movie “ Dam Busters”. During WWII a daring bombing operation code named Chastise was planned to bomb the dams in Germany. Three dams were slated to be destroyed in hope of flooding lowlands disrupting the water supply and hydro to the industrial regions thereby cutting off much needed supplies to the enemy. Nineteen Lancaster bombers successfully destroyed two of the dams but during the mission suffered the loss of eight planes and 56 airmen. One of the dams bombed and breached flooding a vast area was the Edersee. A few years ago my wife and I were invited by friends to visit Germany for five weeks. We had a wonderful time enjoying the company of old and new friends, marvellous German cousine and touring three quarters of Germany including the Black Forest, the famous Cologne Cathedral, a cruise down the Rhine River and, the Edersee Dam. Today it is an enjoyable scenic drive, the dam is surrounded by rolling hills of pine trees and there is an accessable walkway atop the dam, but the large U shaped scar in the middle of the dam is stark evidence of happenings many years ago. Old concrete outlines newer cement and it is impossible to look at this battle scarred structure without bringing to mind the brave airmen who flew the dam buster missions. Thank goodness those years of conflict are history. Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

It’s a game for all ages and a passion everyone can share. Within our region, there are over 85 golf courses to suit every level of skill, and many are quite affordable in comparison to the GTA. Depending on your budget and location, there are 9-hole courses with green fees starting at $15, and championship courses like Blairhampton, that will test your skills. No matter your choice, our courses offer a relaxed environment with a lot less intimidation factor. I was ten when I first swung a club, and I was hooked. I’d collect balls at the driving range and caddy, but I was in my twenties before I took my first lesson, one of my few regrets. If you have children who show an interest, I highly recommend that you take advantage of the many opportunities we have to teach them when they’re young. Most of our courses offer group and individual lessons for adults, but I would suggest you enroll your kids in a summer golf camp. It will teach them patience, manners, respect, honesty and most importantly, perseverance. If you want to start them early, the Stanley

Summertime Projects
My idea of coming to the cottage is to relax and not have to work the entire time. My guess is that your thoughts are similar. Do yourself a favour, hire qualified contractors for the larger jobs such as a new roof, windows or siding. Some of you are talented enough to do the big jobs, but why spend your weekends working harder than you do during the week? Attempt the tasks that you are comfortable with, but don’t forget your family members, they have talents too. Family time is so very important to all of us, so include them in your projects and try to keep things fun! There are many things that you can do as a family. Then you aren’t the only one overloaded and tired going home Sunday night. Plan for these jobs, and try to make sure that they are age appropriate. Don’t get a ten-year-old to stain the deck, but I bet that they could build a great wind chime or bird feeder. A great project for everyone is building new garden beds. Everyone can help and then enjoy it each year. You will always get a positive response when asking for help with
fun projects. Colourful, decorative items for inside and out are always enjoyed and relatively inexpensive to create. There are quite a few online tutorials that you can access for ideas that will suit your needs, and your family. Landscaping, walkways and new firepits are great ideas for the whole family. Everything that you need is available from your local supplier or maybe right in your own backyard. The main thing to remember - work as a family as much as possible. Everyone will take great pride in their accomplishments and get to add their own personal touch. Enjoy your summer with your family, that’s why you have your cottage retreat. Hooked Pro Fishing Tips with Mike Williams
What’s in your Tackle Box? Welcome to the spring fishing season anglers. In this article let’s talk about your must haves in spring fishing gear. The first thing to remember is that the type of gear you want to use is always species specific. PAN FISH - For panfish and crappie I would suggest small, brightly coloured tube baits, twister tails, or small swim-baits rigged on light 1/16oz jig heads. These can be rigged with bobbers, or a float for strike indications or not. Medium to light spinning gear spooled with light line 4-8lb test monofilament line to target pan fish. WALLEYE - You want to have an assortment of Rapalas J-9 or straight, in Perch Pattern or Black and Gold. Another versatile option is a lipless rattling crankbait, such as a Cotton Cordell Rattlin Rap in the Fire Tiger Colour, which can be reeled in steady or jig retrieved to trigger strikes from not so active fish. Heavier jig heads ¼- ½ also work well tipped with a twister tail grub, Gulp or live minnows. These are tried and tested methods to catch early season walleye. Medium to medium heavy spinning or bait casting gear spooled with 10-20lb monofilament or braided line to target walleye.
Since 1994
PIKE - Pike are very aggressive in nature and will strike at most anything that comes near their immediate territory. A spinner bait is a great way to cover water and trigger strikes from these toothy critters. Pike also love jerk baits like a Bomber Long A and larger soft plastic swim-baits. Be sure you have a good set of pliers, jaw spreaders and gloves on hand to help with unhooking these toothy beasts and be very careful when handling these fish as they are powerful and can easily flop around and get a hook stuck in you! Medium heavy to heavy spinning or bait casting gear strung up with 20-50 lb braid with a 6-10-inch wire leader to target the tooth infested pike. A shout out to my new sponsors CottageCountryConnection.com. You’ll find more great tips this season on their website and in the magazine from me, so be sure to check them out. A second
shout out to new sponsor Paris Marine for their support – check them out for boats at parismarine.com. I hope some of my tips help you target and land more fish consistently. We are excited to be a part of a huge new trend in boating. Boat owners used to have to make compromises - style, utility, comfort, reliability, ease of ownership. It was often difficult to have boats that could check all those boxes. As textile construction processes and engine technology have improved, there are now a host of boats that can check all those boxes, and more.
Boats initially designed for the rigors of open ocean and salt water, have gotten more comfortable and stylish than ever before. New outboard motors are quiet, reliable, fuel efficient and require less maintenance than anything on the water. Put that power on a boat that looks great, doesn’t need a cover and can handle rough seas and long boating seasons, and you have the perfect cottage boat. Centre console style fishing boats are like modern pickup trucks for the water. Tons of space, tons of storage and rugged exteriors. These boats are overbuilt and use premium materials and lots

of floatation to ensure a solid ride. All this construction normally comes at a price. Buckeye has recently added an all new offering in the center console market. Buckeye Marine is officially the first Canadian NauticStar dealer, one of the fastest growing brands on the water. NauticStar are hand built in Mississippi, using premium construction methods, and backed by the ownership and pedigree of Mastercraft Boats. Unlike some larger established brands, NauticStar boats are priced at a great value so you can get all the unsinkable utility of a premium center console at an affordable price. NauticStar are exclusively powered by Yamaha Outboards, the most reliable efficient power plants on the water. One of the beautiful things about outboard power is that they have an extremely low cost of ownership, requiring far less maintenance than anything on the water. Buckeye Marine, www.buckeyemarine.com

Fun on the Water with Jay Poole
Boating Time is Family Time. Imagine an activity where you, and your whole family, some friends and even the family pet can be outside together enjoying a beautiful sunny day where the main focus is quality time, conversation, shared experiences and sunshine. No seatbelts, no ‘are we there yet?’ no long periods of helmeted isolation, and the main focus is real world connection not online connectivity. Boats are safe, social, and a great way to get around in the summer, with our lake systems it is easy to get from a local dock to anywhere in the world. Boats offer a way to escape the stresses of daily life, but the way to get your kids and family interested in this quality time, is by starting as soon as possible and fostering positive experiences. Jumping in with two feet and buying a boat and everything that comes with it is one way to start, however there are easier, more affordable ways to test the water before taking the plunge. Take a Lesson/Tour Taking lesson or going on a tour with your family is a great way to safely try out time on the water. Lots of water sports schools encourage the whole family to get in the boat and enjoy what is happening behind it. With waterskiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing, it’s an easy way to enjoy an afternoon on the water with an experienced captain, and learn a new sport. If you aren’t sure that power boats are your speed, you can take a sailing lesson and learn how to harness the wind while enjoying your time on the water. There are tons of incredible sailing clubs that are excited to take people out on the water to try sailing for the first time. If you aren’t feeling athletic, taking your whole family on a tour of the lake with a cruise charter is an excellent choice. Many marinas will provide this service without advertising it so it’s a great pro tip to talk to your local marina and see if they will take you for a cruise. One of the best parts of using these services is that you will have a captain who knows the water and their boats, so you can eliminate some of the uncertainties around navigating unknown waters. Rent a Boat If you feel a little more confident and want to know what it feels like to drive, there are lots of places where you can rent high quality new
Since 1994
boats to find out what freedom on the water feels like. You can rent for a day, a weekend or longer. Renting is a great way to find out what boating looks like for your family, what size or type of boat best suits your needs. Although it is certainly helpful, renting boats in Canada doesn’t require a full blown boaters license, it instead consists of a thorough walk through of the boat and important boating knowledge. One of the other beautiful parts about renting a boat, is you can do it anywhere in the world - definitely a great way to get your family out on the water. Boat with Friends and Family! One of the great parts about being on a boat is the social aspect, and because of that, people who know the feeling are excited to share. If you tell a friend or extended family member who owns a boat that you are interested in boating, chances are they will show you what’s what. A friend or family member who knows the joys of boating will be an incredible guide, and most likely show you how to drive, where to go, and generally what boating is all about. They can be a trusted advisor to your boating questions, helping you to realize all of the different uses and purposes for all the types of boats out there so you can understand what type of boating suits your family best. The most important thing in getting your family on the water is not to wait! The lakes are warming up and summer is on its way, so reach out to all those boating enthusiasts around you, and get on the water ASAP! Forest Bathing in Cottage Country
Cottage Country nature lovers instinctively know what 'forest bathing' - or 'ShinrinYoku' – is, and many have been doing it intuitively for years. For those who aren't sure, the term originates in Japan and literally means 'taking in the forest atmosphere for one's well-being'. An alternative description could be 'nature therapy' which has likely existed in all cultures around the globe since the beginning of time.
“Nature itself is the best physician” ~ Hippocrates During the 1980s, the Japanese studied and developed the practice of visiting a natural area and walking in a purposefully relaxed manner in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the activity as a therapeutic tool. Shinrin-Yoku has since become an integral part of healthcare in Japanese medicine.
Since 1994
Scientific research from the study revealed the following benefits: •
Reduced blood pressure
•
Increased ability to focus, even in children with ADHD
•
Decreased cortisol (stress hormone) levels
•
Boosted immune system functioning
•
Increased energy levels
•
Improved sleep
•
Ability to heal faster from surgery or illness
Tips for Forest Bathing: Try not to have any goal in mind other than to slow down, relax and immerse yourself fully in your surroundings. Let your intuition guide you as you wander through
the forest but also take time to pause and sit for a while when desired. Let your body settle into a state of calmness while also paying attention to the sights, sounds, aromas, and sensations around you. It doesn't matter whether you go alone or with others, but if you do have company it's a good idea to agree on silence during the forest bathing session and leave your phone behind. Simply try and connect with the natural surroundings and allow Mother Nature to work her magic. Stunning natural areas are in abundance here in Cottage Country, so next time you're feeling stressed and need a break from this busy world why not try 'bathing' in the healing magic of a forest near you? Summer Demo Days Tour is Back! When was the last time you bought a car? Whether it was last week or ten years ago, before you actually bought it you probably sat in it and took it for a test-drive. Because there’s no better way to decide if you want to drive the car everyday then actually driving it. Same thing goes for your boat. Only problem is, the boating world is at the mercy of the weather, especially in Ontario, so planning a test drive can be a bit more challenging with a boat than with a car. In the off-season (winter) people often buy boats without the chance to drive it first. We, and many other dealers offer boat deals “conditional on a water trial,” which is great if you already have experience in that boating segment, but doesn’t do much for those who are considering a new kind of boat or first time boat buyers. For 2018, Town & Country Marine wants to offer everyone the chance to drive one of our boats. “Summer Demo Days Tour,” is back and it’s better than ever before. We’re going to be making 5 stops around the Kawartha’s this summer to provide
Since 1994
people with an opportunity to test drive their next potential boat. It’s an excellent way to compare types of boats, and see what our brands have to offer to each boating segment. If you’re not in the market for a new boat, we still want you to come out and enjoy summer with us. Every demo day will be a no-pressure event, meaning there’s no obligation to buy, you can just drive or ride along! There will be a BBQ at each event so everybody can enjoy some boat rides and good food. The exact schedule and locations of the Summer Demo Days Tour are still being determined - with the exception of the Malibu Rider Event, which is the tours grand-finale, and will take place in Peterborough August 10-12th 2018. Check out our events page (www.tcmarine.com/news/) or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Google+ to get the updates. See you on the water! Aquatic Weed Roller Waterfront is a dream for many, and when you have it, you want to be able to use it. Picture wading into the water for that relaxing swim; reality is, much of the waterfront here in cottage country is weedy, and it’s not very enjoyable to swim in. Weeds also pose a risk for your boats and motors, getting tangled in propellers can be a real hassle. There is a new product on the market that will transform your waterfront; and easily. The Aquatic Weed Roller is loved by many; cottage owners, pond owners, along lakeshores and swimming beach areas. Simple and easy to use, at first sight the Aquatic weed roller has a very aggressive manner, with 3 sets of very durable blades for cutting and ripping out weeds and algae. Weighing only 20 lbs, with a main roller that is 24” wide means ease of use with convenient 4’ handle sections. Holes at each end the roller allow it to fill with water pushing it to sit on the bottom, all you need to do is roll it back and forth. Consider adding some of Pond Perfections Sludge Reduction Pellets before using the roller, they add mass amounts of good bacteria, enzymes and amino acids which will work hard to super charge the decomposition process. While the aquatic weed roller is busy cutting and tearing out weeds it also assists in creating a softer sludge layer on the bottom. When sludge and sediment on the bottom of the lake is exposed to natural bacteria and mixed with oxygenated water, decomposition of muck and sediment is sped up. As you loosen bottom sludge, deeper harder sludge is worked up repeating the cycle. The less sludge and muck you have the less the weeds and algae will grow. How Buying a Cottage is Different than Buying a Home in the City When shopping for a cottage, there are some aspects that can differ when compared to purchasing a home in the city. It is imperative that you hire a sales team that has experience in the geographical area you are looking to purchase and has expertise in the cottage real estate market as well. Your industry professionals will help you navigate things like, water sources and sanitation, septic inspections, access and a lot more. The right experts will give council on things like: asking for records about the health of a septic system when necessary and suggesting leading professionals in the area who are also versed in recreational properties, like a home inspector.
Since 1994
Is your property zoned ‘seasonal’? This means the municipality may not maintain the roads in the winter months. Access and Easements are other important details, especially with recreational properties. Many cottage properties are water access, or do not have a formal road, do you need to cross neighbour’s property to get to your property? Is there already a formal agreement in place? If not, a verbal agreement might not pertain to a new owner. If the property is water access, do you own the shoreline? If not, how is access guaranteed? Having the right sales team is integral in
getting answers to these questions and feeling confident about your cottage purchase. Understanding Energy Healing The beginnings harmonising and alternative medicine can be found throughout the ancient world, and is not a modern concept as many believe. Early medical practitioners had an understanding that when energy within the body became unbalanced, people became ill. In Asian countries, the medical society felt the only way to a healthy body was in adjusting and correcting this imbalance. For example, China and Japan established a medical system based upon healing energy levels within the body. Yet, the belief in the role of energy is not limited to the physical. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have always perceived this energy (Chi), as having a holistic impact. Which means the quality, and amount of energy found circulating within your body affects your emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. It is not restricted to your physical health. Here are some different energy healing modalities: • Reiki • Reflexology • Therapeutic Touch • Acupuncture • Biofield Energy • Shamanic Work • QiGong • Emotion Code/Body Code • Chakra Balancing • Emotional Freedom Technique • Polarity Work • Body Talk What can one expect from an Energy Treatment? The words “heal” and “whole” both originate from the same root word. When you participate in an energy treatment you are allowing yourself to become whole. What this often looks like is relaxation, pain relief, fast recovery from surgery or injury, or getting well. It also may be relief from life traumas and emotional pain. Energy work opens, balances, and connects the body’s energy centers. Lynn Anne Hill is an Energy Practitioner and is a Reiki Master and Teacher, an Emotion Code Practitioner, a Therapeutic Touch Practitioner. She can be reached at 705 872-8357 or lynnhill113@gmail.com

Living a
Grateful Life We’ve all heard that a glass of ‘this’ or tablespoon of ‘that’ will slow aging, adding years to our lives. Often this ‘advice’ is a little farfetched, and it is left to our own common sense to sift through. We all ponder how to squeeze every last minute out of this beautiful thing called life; and if you think realistically there are a few things we can do to live our best life; take good care of yourself. Get the proper amount of sleep, your body and mind need this time to rejuvenate, and heal 7-8 hours a night is ideal. We hear it everywhere, but - drinking the correct amount of water can have a major impact on our bodies. As a general rule, drink half your body weight in ounces. Your body needs water to function properly and drinking lots helps decrease inflammation. Choose healthy foods – skip pre-made meals opting for chemicalfree food. Whole foods are non-inflammatory, and make you feel better. A great tool when figuring out what foods your body tolerates best, is to get your food intolerances checked by a naturopath. Eat foods that promote the growth of good bacteria,

like fermented veggies, miso, kefir and raw garlic. Increase your intake of healthy fats, adding in nut butters, coconut/hemp oil, and avocado. Ditch “unhealthy fats” like fried foods, donuts, microwave popcorn and fast foods that are full of Trans Fats. Eliminate or decrease sugar and artificial sweeteners. Instead use natural sweeteners, Stevia Extract and Monk Fruit Extract have 0 calories and don’t increase your glucose levels. Exercise, 3-5 times per week. Find a form of meditation that calms you, while helping cope with stress (a major contributor to aging) – like yoga or tai chi. Most of all, embrace a positive attitude; find joy in being grateful for each day. Spend quality time with loved ones, dance, sing, laugh, play and live in the moment. Each day list five things that you are grateful for. If you maintain a positive attitude, you will be amazed at how invigorated and young you feel! A Precautionary Tale Colic kills horses. Most horse owners have heard of colic and know colic (abdominal pain) is a symptom of something wrong and not a diagnosis. How many horse owners are aware that a common material like string on bales of hay, left in the paddock or on a round bale, can potentially result in a fatal colic if ingested by their horse? It was October 2017 and I was enjoying a comfortable flight from Toronto to Dallas to visit family and watch my granddaughter compete on her 3 year old futurity mare in the reined cow horse event in Fort Worth, Texas. Just arriving at the Fort Worth Show facility is special for any horse lover. To add to the excitement of this trip, my daughter had purchased tickets for us to watch “Down the Fence” documentary alongside the horse trainers and competitors who were in the film! This film showed the resilience of horse lovers, the quest to constantly improve relationships with the horse but mostly that working with the horses themselves, and learning from them, is often privilege enough. And such (the privilege only) ended up being the case for Zoie and Emmy as they never made it to competition. Emmy was Zoie’s futurity mare, making their debut at this horse show. The mare was doing well, her practise runs were great and Zoie was excited to showcase their long hours of training; until Emmy suffered colic. Rarely, such as in Emmy’s case, a young horse will ingest string, which can remain in the intestine undetected for months or even years. Eventually that foreign object creates a blockage. Sometimes surgery is successful, but often it is not. When Zoie purchased Emmy there were no signs of anything formidable to come, but come it did. Zoie tried to save her mare but Emmy was lost in surgery at Texas A&M Veterinary Teaching Hospital. One thing for certain, with tears and loss (and time) comes strength, and understanding that we try and sometimes we lose - but we never give up. In memory of Emmy. 8 ways to unleash your summer and ensure your dog is safe and sound while he’s getting his summer vacation’s worth No dog drags himself out of bed on a summer morning and gives himself a “seize the day” pep talk. One scent of newly-mown grass and that dog is going to do exactly what nature tells him to.
SURFER FUR. It may seem counter-intuitive, but let his hair grow out this summer. A long coat brushed dry after a bath will work wonders for your pet’s skin on a hot day—not to mention his reputation on the beach.
HYDRATION STATIONS. Peak sunlight hours are 10 am – 4 pm. Avoid late afternoon swoon by setting up drinking stations around the yard.
BBQ FOR YOU-KNOW-WHO. Bacon Swiss burger biscuits? Beef bourguignon dog treats? With canine-safe cookout fare like this, no one will even notice when you inevitably mix up the meats on the grill.
FETCH WITH CARE. Remember that canines are wired for social cues, and sometimes that means they’ll follow your lead even beyond what’s good for them. Be mindful of heavy-panting during Fetch. COLD FEET. All it takes is a summer storm power outage or a heatwave, and the A.C.’s D.I.Y. for the day. Shady trees, kiddie pools, and cooling pads can make great, inexpensive provisions for over-hot pets. Whatever you choose, the key is to find a cool surface—those paws hold the only sweat glands she’s got! FREE BELLY RUBS. Veterinarians tend to see a spike in canine skin and ear infections during the summer. Fur is a natural canopy, of course, but be sure to protect the sensitive spots (bellies, ears, around the eyes) with some pet grade sunblock every 3 to 4 hours.
TREAT HUNT. Hide and seek can be a great game for a smaller cookout giving naturally social dogs a perfect chance for some guided mingling. And since you went to all that trouble to make those delectable peanut butter dog treats, you might as well make the little rascal work for them! FAMILY FEUD. And don’t be afraid to get wet! Whether it’s a simple surprise attack with the hose or a well-orchestrated water balloon fight, there’s something about an all-out, family-wide water war that tells your pup—it’s gonna be a good day! Dr. Terry’s Zoo With spring flowers comes pollen and allergies. Chilli Pepper our Kingston canine rescue suffers from atopic dermatitis. A chronic itchy skin disease associated with environmental allergies. If your pet suffers from itchy skin and ear infections it may be the result of atopy or food allergies. A blood test can determine if your pet is allergic to weeds, grasses, trees and fungi. If the results show an elevated level of IgE 150 or higher it is considered significant. There is a new exciting medication in the form of a daily tablet that targets the production

of cytokines a protein molecule that acts as a chemical messenger allowing cells to communicate with each other. This new drug has a very high success rate in treating flea allergy dermatitis, atopy, food allergy and contact allergy. Chilli Pepper has finally found relief without the side effects of cortisone. With seasonal allergies on their way this drug is a game changer. A tick removed from Amigo Habanero our Cuban canine was tested for 12 different pathogens. Spring blood testing is advised to determine if your pet is free from Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis and Heartworm
which are often asymptomatic. Our three canines Amigo, Spinnaker and Chilli have already commenced their oral meds for the spring onslaught of ticks and fleas. HERE’S TO A HEALTHY SPRING! Dr. Terry Davidson, Parkhill Animal Hospital, 705 745 4605

In the Shoes of
Peterborough's First Settlers - 1825 European settlement in this area is documented as having officially began in the year 1825 (although some found themselves settling here earlier). Emigrants left harsh conditions in Ireland for a better life in Canada. In total, nine ships were used to transport 2,024 people across the Atlantic. However, the conditions in steerage - the hold of the ship where temporary berths (beds) were created - were almost as bad as those conditions they left behind. At the time, the required dimensions of the steerage would have been a height of 5 feet, 6 inches. A berth held two adults or several children; those under 14 years of age were considered half an adult, and those under seven were considered a third of an adult, while children under one year old were not counted at all. The ships left Cork, Ireland on May 13, 1825 and would arrive in Quebec 30–40 days later. While on board the ships, many precautions were made to help prevent the spread of disease and sickness. Children were vaccinated against smallpox in the weeks leading up to the departure.

Passengers were required to be out of the berths and on the main deck by 8:00 AM each morning – regardless of their condition. Fresh air would be circulated through the berths by hanging a piece of cloth, known as windsail, in front of the hatches. The windsail caught the breeze and sent it below to freshen the berths. Passengers were required to keep themselves, and the ship, as clean as possible. The decks and berths were scraped, scrubbed, and sprinkled with hot vinegar each day. Women washed clothes and hung them on the line to dry. The passengers took turns cleaning the water closet (bathroom) after being threatened to have it locked up if it were not kept clean. The Irish families would then travel approximately another 550 kilometres from Montreal, through Kingston, across Lake Ontario to Cobourg, and then North across Rice Lake and up the Otonabee River where they would eventually settle in the various townships around Peterborough. Upon arrival in the beginning of autumn 1825, work would have continued to

I love t-shirts! I am always on the lookout for fun shirts for the family so when I came across this activity on Pinterest I knew I had to try it with the boys. We bought most of the stuff at the dollar store – except the t-shirt which I found at Wal-Mart. All that is needed is a white t-shirt, fine sandpaper and good quality crayons. The more coarse sandpaper will provide more texture on the shirt. Give them all a try. Directions For Making A Sandpaper Printed T-Shirt Color a fun picture on the sandpaper. Peterborough Certified Home Inspections
Spring is the perfect time to think about your home and cottage. Ongoing visual inspections can help identify issues as they arise. The prevention and repairs of problems as they start, allows the homeowner to maximize the life expectancy of the systems that make it your home. You don't need any fancy tools to perform a visual inspection, just a camera, a note pad and maybe a flashlight depending on you circumstances. If you don't have a partner to help you with this task, consider calling a friend. After all, two sets of eyes are better than one. Now, take a step back and look at things from afar. Try to imagine how the water will flow around the structure during heavy rains. Water is our homes enemy, and controlling it outside will help keep things warm and dry inside. Up close, walk around the house looking for things that don't appear right. Cracks, sags, and areas that appear darker are some things you want to take note of. If you see an area that is different, try to see where the source may be coming from. The gutter and downspouts are a very common problem source. Using a familiar object in the picture for a benchmark for future comparison is a very handy tool. Once you have completed a full circle, turn around and go the other way. Take lots of pictures and keep everything in a file that you can share with the home inspector when it comes time for you to sell. Get to know your house and it will treat you right. When the owner of a small business decides to hire his or her first employee, there is a strong temptation to bring on that worker as a self-employed contractor. This arrangement is seen to reduce the owner’s risk. In many ways, it does; the risk is shifted to the worker who has no employment insurance, no protection from the Employment Standards Act (f–or example: overtime, statutory holidays), and no protection from workplace environment issues governed by the Employment Equity Act. The self-employed worker is also then required to track and report their income and expenses as a business which is often beyond their technical expertise. Some will argue that the self-employed workers benefit from increased deductions available against income, ability to set their own hours, freedom to work for multiple clients, and potential to make a profit. Unfortunately, in many cases, the workers never realize most of these benefits and are as restricted in their activities as they would be as an employee. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has won many cases against companies who have tried to avoid employment taxes (EI and CPP) resulting in penalties, interest, and lost time through audit for those business owners. Sometimes CRA has discovered the dishonesty on its own and sometimes the worker has reported the company to CRA when the relationship has soured. Frequently, once CRA determines that a worker is an employee, the employer is also found to be liable for payments to WSIB. The guiding principles upon which a worker is engaged should be CRA’s Guide RC4110 – Employee or Self-employed? This guide examines factors such as the worker’s degree of control, responsibility for tools and equipment, ability to sub-contract, and opportunity for profit or loss. Business owners should ensure the status they choose is reflected in the actual terms and conditions of the employment or contract for services. A successful entrepreneur ensures that their budget projections include all associated costs of that first employee – including company contributions to CPP, EI and WSIB – before making the decision to hire. For many Canadians the properties they own, whether it be their home or cottage, will represent the single largest investments they will make. Individuals will no doubt have investment portfolios, such as RRSPs, but the share these represent of the total net worth picture could be small. In some cases an excessively large percentage of assets in real estate may not be an appropriate mix, begging the question – how does one create a bigger and more liquid investment portfolio?
home can be re-mortgaged, with loaned capital going back into investments. This then takes mortgage interest on the home, which is not tax deductible, and converts the debt such that the interest is deductible. This improves the tax efficiency of this strategy, but this won’t make sense unless there is a realistic assumption that the after-tax returns on the investments will exceed the cost of borrowing.
One solution is to use the equity in your properties as collateral for loans aimed at investing in marketable securities. Just as you might take out a line of credit for big ticket item purchases or renovations, you can apply this credit to investments. This strategy does require careful planning and consultation with your tax expert and one reason is that borrowing cost on that line of credit can be used as a deduction against the income generated by those investments.
For that reason, this strategy is suitable only for those who have a reasonably high risk tolerance and fairly clean balance sheet. In other words, if an individual already has a high degree of indebtedness then the increased leverage against property will open them up to risk should interest rates start to climb appreciably. Done properly, however, this strategy is useful in diversifying the balance sheet and improving liquidity. Again, I can’t emphasize enough the need to review this type of strategy with your advisor and tax professional.
A similar strategy involves liquidating investments when there is already a mortgage on your primary residence and using the proceeds to pay down or off the mortgage. Once done the

The next TIFF film is Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story screening May 8, followed June 12 by the delightful comedy C’est la Vie!, which premiered at Toronto’s TIFF last September at the closing night gala. More TIFF films will screen July 10, August 21 and September 11. It’s not too soon to think about summer at the Academy, with Broadsway July 7, Lindsay Little Theatre’s farce See How They Run July 19-21, Triple Threat Theatre’s musical Annie in August and much more. We will also have some wonderfully intimate concerts in our second floor lounge twice monthly during June, July and August. Keep checking our website at academytheatre.ca as more shows are announced.
