Largest Mark's Location in the World Coming to Peterborough

Your favourite store for clothes that work has some big news. The Largest Mark's Location in the world will soon open a brand-new store, right here in Peterborough!

With high ceilings and a squarer shape, shoppers can easily view the entire store.

The store will also have two entrances and check out areas, with the one on Clonsilla having a Marks Commercial and Customer Service specialty focus, making it more convenient for customers to pick up industrial and special orders.

The completely new store will feature a central fitting room area, with dedicated staff to help customers and an expanded men's and ladies casual footwear and industrial footwear section, as well as jean shops, to better show the new expanded selection.

The in-house production area for embroidery and customization of garments for businesses, sport teams, or promotional events has been expanded as well.

To make sure it's easy and convenient to visit the store, there will be two street entrances, the current on Lansdowne, and a new entrance and parking lot being built on Clonsilla. This allows visitors to always turn right when exiting, no matter which area of town they are from.

The all new Marks will be a locally owned building, with Grant Murray and Lucie Laplante, wanting to provide Peterborough with the most modern Marks possible. The new location will provide excellent support for the Lindsay Mark's store and the best possible experience for customers of both stores.

At approximately 30,000 Sq. Ft., with an extra 4,000 Sq. Ft on the sales floor, this beautiful new location has a ton of conveniences and will be easier for shoppers to navigate. Just 2 doors up the hill and across the street from the current location, above the Canadian Tire Mall.

Santa in this Issue of Cottage Country Last year we introduced you to Santa Paul Hillier who answered the call to portray Santa Claus here in the Kawarthas. We are thrilled to share his beautiful face and his twinkling blue eyes (and yes they really do twinkle!) on the cover and inside of this special holiday issue. Santa Paul always remains in character when wearing "his happy red suit" as he portrays the jolly old St Nick. For those looking for Santa for a holiday party or event, the Elves tell me he has a very precious few booking dates left available.

You won't want to miss the Free Selfie with Santa Day event, being held at Mark's on Lansdowne Street on December the 8th. Santa Paul will be there sharing the joy with kids of all ages. To learn more about Santa Paul go to www.santapaulhillier.com HO HO HO! Merry Christmas Cottage Country!

Celebrating Local Makers It’s that time of year where everyone starts making lists and scheming the perfect surprises for their loved ones. We know some of the most thoughtful gifts are one of a kind. Think of your grandmother’s eyes lighting up as she opens something unique and useful by a local artisan, or something beautiful you made with your own two hands. Watson & Lou is a new gift boutique in Downtown Peterborough that features contemporary, light-hearted home decor, and a wide range of gift items including ceramics, knitwear, prints, baby

accessories, textiles, housewares, and fine art. With everything from stained glass Canadiana to do-it-yourself crafting kits, you’ll surely find something meaningful even for the person who has everything. Owners Erin Watson and Anna Eidt met as top five competitors in last year’s Win This Space competition and combined their business plans to provide a multi-use creative hub. Watson&Lou is more than a gift shop: it provides a platform for local makers to share their work with a wider audience while refining and growing their practice. At the back of the shop, a shared studio space with various amenities and flexible rates allows freelancers, makers, and artists to work in a collaborative and supportive environment, while monthly maker meetings provide a platform for skills sharing. Feeling creative? On evenings and weekends, the studio space transforms into a workshop and event venue offering new skills, fun times, and beautiful things for your home. Upcoming events include Holiday Card Collage Making, All Natural Winter Wreaths, a “Tier it Yourself” Dessert Stand Workshop, Gingerbread Decorating Competition, and a Vintage + Made in Canada Pop Up. Buy workshop tickets or book your private event at watsonandlou.com. Watson&Lou watsonandlou.com 383 Water St., Peterborough 705-775-7568 Advertisement

Overstock Liquidation

Supporting People with Disabilities Overstock Liquidation in Lakefield is proud to support individuals with disabilities. After prompting by her employees, Sheryl agreed to speak about the story behind Overstock’s conception. The idea for opening

the store came about when considering what their son would do after he finished school at 21, Quinten has an intellectual disability. “It’s important for people to realize how valuable people with disabilities really are. They are part of the community". It benefits everyone when they are working and being productive in the community, says Over. Quinten say's “Working at Overstock helps me to build skills. I like to work with my coworkers. It’s fun to work in a happy environment.” With four employees with special needs, Sheryl has created an inclusive workplace where everyone is able to work at a pace that suites their needs and creates a sense of accomplishment. Brandon who has been working at Overstock for quite some time says “I like working here because it is like a second family to me, not only is it a second family but it has helped me over time with my strengths. Overstock is a friendly environment and a happy place to work.” Heather, another employee says “Overstock gives me work experience and the staff treat you as family. By having a job, I am gaining independence.” Working at Overstock helps me with my self-esteem. The staff are easy to work with and I am gaining work experience” Says Haley another employee. Sheryl stresses that more business need to consider making such a difference in someone’s life, as everyone deserves the chance to feel productive and useful. Sheryl also concedes that training employees with special needs takes longer, but the payoff for the business and owner is that you have a long-term; sometimes life-long employee. Overstock liquidation takes pride in making great strides to support people with disabilities within our community. Overstock Liquidation www.overstock.com (705) 652-0660

Reflecting on the Year Past & Preparing for the One to Come

It is fitting that the holiday season comes at the end of the year. Year's end is the time when people look back on the year just past and get ready for the year to come. It is no accident that New Year's resolutions are so popular - the holiday season is the perfect time to take stock of your life, assess where you have been and think about where you are going. This year, why not take a break from the egg nog and Christmas carols and do a bit of self-reflection? You do not have to do a deep psychological analysis - just reflecting on the year you have just lived through is enough to get you started. Think about your biggest accomplishments during the year, but spend a few minutes thinking about your biggest regrets as well. Knowing where you are coming from will make it easier to make those New Year's resolutions and move on to bigger and better things in the year to come. You can also spend the post-holiday season reflecting on yourself and your family. You no doubt loved the presents you received and enjoyed the shopping you did, but did you spend enough time with your family members? Often the best gift we can give is the gift of ourselves. Those presents cannot be bought in any store, but they are truly priceless. The holiday season is the perfect time for self-reflection and self-analysis. This year, why not take some time to think about where you have been in the year just past, where you hope to go in the year just starting and how you plan to make the journey?

Those Were The Days

“It Was A Very Good Year”

Lush green leaves surrendered to Autumn altering their colours to orange then brown, only to lose their grip and tumble hapharzardly to the ground abandonning baren tree trunks and branches silhouetted against the dusk of an early evening sky. It is a happy/sad time of year, scenery blending all of nature into one massive canvas but also a time to let us know summer has run it’s yearly lifespan. It is a time when September gives way to October, when turkey and stuffing decorated our dinner tables as we give thanks for the blessings received and for some, thankful for simply surviving another year. Goblins and ghosts, spacemen and angels end the month, children in costume scurried from house to house in search of their Halloween treats, or tricks as the case may be. In November thousands of veterans and grateful citizens gathered at various cenotaphs across Canada remembering those who gave their all in defense of our freedoms. We honoured with deep respect those who marched slowly or sat feebly with teary eyes that mirrored the horrors they once endured. And then December, the month we celebrate Christmas, to me the most important and significant day in all of our calendar. It is a time when people all around the world open their hearts and pocket books to help those less fortunate than themselves. It is a time when strangers greet total strangers with handshakes and tidings of good cheer. It is a time when Christians celebrate the birth of a Babe in a manger, a time when a jolly old man in a red suit brings laughter to so many children, a time when giving is much more appreciated than receiving. It is a time of jingle bells, ribbons and bows, presents wrapped in red and green, Christmas carols and trees lit with a rainbow of lights and shiny silver tinsel. It is a time when “peace on Earth good will toward men” actually means something. It is a time when all faiths of the world embrace those words in solemn prayer. Since snow is just over the horizon I can not help but think of the days of my youth. Fluffy flakes fell in slow motion to the already white covered ground. The one bulb street light shone a triagular glow over Salvation Army members playing brass instruments while a small chorus of carollers could be heard serenading our neighbourhood, many of us standing on our front porch bundled in scarf and touque enjoying every hymn. I will always remember Dad hoisting me on his shoulders so I could gently place the angel on the upper most branch of our fully decorated tree. The world has changed over the past many decades, not always for the good but the spirit of Christmas will live on forever. From my house to yours, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Perfect Holiday Latte Recipes Christmas-themed lattes can be found in many coffee shops during the holiday season, but rather than spending money on a shop-bought latte, you can easily make one at home to enjoy alone or share with friends. Gingerbread Latte

For a gingerbread latte, many will suggest adding gingerbreadflavoured syrup to the espresso. However, you can create your own gingerbread latte without the syrup! Simply combine two tablespoons of boiling water with two teaspoons of sugar, one teaspoon of ground ginger and a couple of drops of vanilla extract, and mix well until the sugar begins to dissolve. Add two shots of espresso and stir again, then follow with the steamed milk. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with ground nutmeg before serving.

Spiced Latte

To make a latte spiced with the flavours of Christmas, simply mix half a teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of nutmeg and half a teaspoon of ginger with a teaspoon of sugar, place into a mug and add two shots of espresso. Stir well before adding the steamed milk and topping with whipped cream. Sprinkle a mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg over the top of the cream and serve.

Eggnog Latte

It is advisable to buy premixed eggnog to create an eggnog latte. Place two shots of espresso in your mug or cup and add a shot of rum or bourbon. Mix half a cup of eggnog with your regular amount of milk and steam as you normally would, before adding the eggnog-milk mixture. Top the latte with whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon. Peppermint Latte With a peppermint latte you can choose to use peppermint syrup, but for a more Christmassy feel, crème de menthe or peppermint schnapps can work just as well. Simply add a shot of whichever peppermint flavouring you have chosen to the milk before steaming. Add the mint-milk mixture to two shots of espresso and top with whipped cream. Grate some dark chocolate on top and serve. All of these recipes can help put you in the festive mood and add a bit of warmth to your life. Coffee is always best when shared with friends, so why not ask your neighbours round and tempt them with your new latte recipes? They would go perfectly with some Christmas cookies and festive cheer.

Holiday Cocktails

Christmas and New Years are stressful. There are wreaths to hang, gifts to buy, trees to decorate, and events to attend. The last thing you want to worry about is what beverage to serve at your holiday bash. Fortunately, there are easy-to-make, festive Christmas cocktails, based on standard ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, that you can prepare in minutes. Grab your measuring cups and your favorite punch bowl, and let’s get mixing! Pa-Rum-Pum-Pum Punch

This recipe scales easily for a small get-together or a large crowd, and you can make it family-friendly by omitting the rum. Adding sherbet to your cocktails might seem crazy, but soon you'll be hooked on the frothy texture. • 1 package cranberry cocktail concentrate (frozen) • 1 package orange juice concentrate (frozen) • 8 cups (2 liters) lemon-lime soda (Sprite, 7Up or store brand) • 1 cup white rum • 1-pint raspberry sherbet • 2 oranges, sliced • Pinch of ground nutmeg Combine all ingredients from cranberry cocktail to raspberry sherbet and stir thoroughly. To serve, pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of orange sprinkled with nutmeg. Serves 10.

Eggnog Latte Martini

If this holiday favorite already fuels your mornings, incorporating the rich flavor of an eggnog latte into your evening will make your day doubly-delicious. Health-conscious drinkers can use a light or plantbased eggnog to reduce the calories and fat in this recipe. • 1 cup eggnog (non-alcoholic) • ½ cup cold brew coffee • ½ cup vanilla vodka • Ice cubes • Pinch of ground cinnamon Combine all liquids with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into two martini glasses, then garnish with a pinch of cinnamon. Serves two.

Santa's Sangria

This easy sangria recipe is a great way to use up that sweet red wine that's been sitting on your wine rack for months. It's full of winter's best fruits, so that means it's practically healthy! • 1 bottle sweet red wine • 1 bottle sparkling apple cider • ¼ cup brandy • 2 mandarin oranges, thinly sliced • 2 sweet apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (Fuji or Gala apples work well) • 1 pear, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced • Seeds of 1 pomegranate • 1 cup frozen cranberries Combine all ingredients from red wine to pomegranate seeds in a pitcher and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Add frozen cranberries immediately before serving. Serves 10. Many people look forward to holiday celebrations and the beverages that go along with them. These three drinks are sure to be a hit at every party, and they're so delicious that you might be tempted to overindulge. Remember to drink responsibly, so that you can have a happy and healthy holiday season!

Hanging Your Christmas Lights Like a Pro The festive season is just around the corner, if time allows – hang your lights now. Warmer weather makes what can be a detailed and tedious task much easier, and you don’t have to fight the snow and frigid temperatures. WHERE: Determine your layout and design. Measure the total length required and compare this to the stock of lights that you have on hand, top up if needed. TIP: Untangle each string of lights you plan to use. Lay them out and test them all prior to hanging. Most replacement bulbs are available at your local hardware store. POWER: Determine your power source. Most homes have exterior GFCI outlets which should be your first choice. Start with a timer or at minimum a surge protected power bar, for safety. TOOLS: The most important item is a safe ladder, and one that is appropriate for the areas you plan to decorate. Gloves and safety glasses are always a good idea. MOUNTING CLIPS: There are many types of mounting clips available. All-in-one clips typically work for most applications such as the eaves trough or shingles. Always have extra clips. They are usually plastic and break easily, especially when cold. Start by installing 10-20 feet of clips, then follow behind with the light strings. Install one length at a time, and connect later, it’s simply easier. Continue until all areas are complete and do a test run. Adjust the spacing and look for a balanced design. SPECIAL EFFECTS: Flood lights and special effect lights are also very popular and can really complete the look. Animated and inflatable decorations are also a big hit, and should run from a separate power source if possible. SAFETY TIP: If you are using regular bulbs, make sure that they are not in contact with anything flammable. Once everything is complete, stand back, smile, and remember the enjoyment that your family and friends receive from your artistic efforts. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season! Winter Planters & Pots with Vikki

Who knows what weather the start to the Winter season will have? To ensure you are not outdoors creating your winter planters amid snow storms and freezing temperatures, we suggest your outdoor winter decor be completed as soon as the calendar has respectfully passed Remembrance Day. To prepare the pots, cut all remaining plant material off at soil level. Leave the roots and moist soil right in your pots (make sure they are pots that are “winter proof”). This will form the base to push in the evergreen boughs. Use a generous amount of evergreen boughs (pine, cedar, balsam and/or spruce) at various lengths to form a pleasing base and then add height to the arrangement with red dogwood or birch branches. Accents fill in the body and can be natural accents like dried hydrangea blooms, pinecones, sumac, sedum heads (use spray paint to bump up the colour, if you wish) or decor accents that you purchase (shiny balls, wicker shapes, bows and the like). Be creative and have fun with your choices! Do remember that these arrangements can last throughout the entire winter so wire distinctly holiday accents to a stick that you can cut out once the festivities are over. While stars, pinecones and birch branches look winter-y, shiny red balls, gauzy bows and Santa faces look dated and out of place in February. Make your arrangements full and lush so when you cut out the seasonal accents you are not left with large holes. The Canadian outdoors is Mother Nature’s Cooler, so you do not need to water your outdoor arrangements unless we hit a really warm spell mid November and your evergreens look dry. Usually though, the moist air is more than sufficient to keep everything fresh and lovely from November to March. Christmas Gift Ideas for Elderly Loved Ones As the holiday season approaches, you might be wondering what gifts to buy elderly loved ones. In many cases, these individuals already have everything they need, so finding something that is sure to bring a smile to their faces might be difficult. Here are several wonderful Christmas gift ideas:

The Gift of Time

Truly the best gift of all is the gift of time spent with you. Many of today's elderly are lonely and homebound. Coming to visit for several hours for an afternoon of conversation is perhaps the best gift you can ever give. If you don't have the time to visit yourself, perhaps someone in your immediate family can take your place. If you do have the time, consider visiting living relatives once each week during the holiday season to help ward off thoughts of loved ones who are no longer living.

The Gift of Senior Care Services

Many of today's seniors find themselves with inadequate financial resources as well as limited mobility. Arranging for an hour of help from experienced caregivers each week is a thoughtful gift that would probably mean more than anything you could buy in a store. Lots of different services are offered, including light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, and companionship. Even if you cannot afford to provide this special gift for an entire year, why not consider doing so for as long as you can?

The Gift of Senior-Friendly Items

As people age, dexterity and mobility are often diminished. Each of the following items is designed for ease of use: • Remote controllers with oversized buttons • Weighted forks, knives, and spoons • Lights that turn on and off with tapping • Large-print magazines, crossword puzzles, and books

The Gift of Comfort Items

While many seniors have what they need to perform daily tasks, comfort items are often appreciated. You might want to gift one or more of the following items during the holiday season: • Hand and foot creams and lotions • Sugar-free candies and cookies • Scented soaps • Lap blankets for the car or armchair

Community Care Health & Care Network That’s always been the philosophy of the Community Care Health & Care Network’s Hospice Services and the organization’s grief support programs. It’s a simple belief at the core of the wide range of services available to local residents. Carl Hester Wows the Crowd Olympic Dressage Gold Medallist

Over 1,200 spectators filled beautiful Caledon Equestrian Park Arena in October for a two-day masterclass hosted by British Olympic gold medallist Carl Hester. Spectators travelled from as far away as Nova Scotia and British Columbia for the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best rider and trainer. Carl Hester is a popular five-time British Olympian who has spent nearly three decades on the international dressage scene. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, he won Team silver aboard the 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Nip Tuck (stable name Barney) and also trained the entire British Olympic team of Charlotte Dujardin, Spencer Wilton, Fiona Bigwood. Bill 148 Ontario Bill 148: Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act has received its second reading at Queen’s Park and appears set to be enacted on January 1, 2018. Bill 148 will amend portions of the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and the Labour Relations Act (LRA). With all the attention on the increase to minimum wage, there are several other changes that have not hit the radar of many small businesses, but will substantially change the landscape of employment and labour law in Ontario: 1. Scheduling: employees have the right to request schedule and location changes after 3 months of employment without repercussions; and if they are scheduled to work at least 3 hours, they must be paid for 3 hours minimum. There are other changes that effected companies should be familiar with. 2. Vacation Pay: after 5 years of service, employees will earn vacation pay at 6% (roughly equal to 3 weeks of vacation). 3. Paid Emergency Leave: all employers must now provide 2 days of paid personal emergency leave per year and 8 unpaid days. 4. Family Medical Leave: employees may take up to 27 weeks of unpaid leave in a year to stay home with a terminally ill family member. 5. Public Holiday Pay (“stat pay”): the calculation for stat pay will now be based off of the pay period immediately preceding the holiday instead of 20 days.

Tackling Today’s Difficult Issues Today’s problems seem more challenging and less straightforward than ever before. In our communities we are grappling with complex issues like how to keep our young people here, create more local jobs and revenue, and develop accessible, affordable rural transportation. Even complex problems have a roadmap, handbook or owner’s manual. But what do we do when the instructions aren’t included? From what I learned at Harvard this summer, our new “adaptive” problems have no roadmap, or the "map" we have is from 100 years ago. In such cases, today’s leaders need to authorize action, assemble the right team, then motivate and inspire action. Easy, right? Successful “adaptive” leaders also know how to embrace uncertainty and messy processes, use data over intuition, and not confuse meetings with action. They spend less time fretting about establishing a routine or controlling the future and focus more on finding and exploiting opportunities in even the most daunting tasks. The key seems to be having the ability to: identify “adaptive problems” from the start; not spending time, energy and money looking for the guidebook that doesn’t exist; and then managing the expertise and passion needed to build the plane as it flies. True leaders run towards big issues and knowing how to approach today’s really, really hard problems will empower the best results for all – including here locally – in these challenging times. Submitted by Mike Perry, President of The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce

6. Pregnancy and Parental Leave: there are increases to the weeks of parental leave allowed and for employees who suffer a miscarriage or still-birth. 7. Equal Pay for Equal Work: part-time and temporary employees must be paid the same wages as full-time employees performing equivalent work with some exceptions. 8. Union Certification: several changes to this process that effected companies should be familiar with. 9. Independent Contractors: there are new rules and regulations to prevent employers from treating employees as self-employed in order to avoid the ESA. Employers will be subject to penalties unless they can prove that the individual is truly an independent contractor. It is extremely important that business owners make time to get familiar with all these changes and reflect them in their employment practices in the new year. Welcomes Katie Morrice Katie arrived in Peterborough in 1999 when her father was transferred from his job in Bruce County to the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant. Katie immediately fell in love with the area and is grateful for all the opportunities life here has given her. Since coming to the city she has attended Fleming College for Business, purchased her first home with her fiancĂŠ Jesse, and formed life-long friendships.

Katie was Food and Beverage Manager at The Ranch Resort Banquet Hall for nearly 10 years, a job she adored as she loves meeting new people. People describe Katie as adventurous, spontaneous, kind and compassionate. Katie left the Ranch Resort in search of a less seasonal job and moved on to become Parts Manager at Peterborough RV Centre where she thrived on being able to help people solve their problems. She learned lots from working in an industry she previously knew nothing about but after 4 years was ready to get back to her chosen niche; marketing. Katie, her mother Linda, father Peter, and big brother Tim are all very close and spend a lot of time together. Prior to working at Bruce Power, Katie's father was in the army so she learned the value of hard work and appreciation from him. Her mother stayed home to raise the children and Katie recognizes the value this brought to their lives. She feels it strengthened their relationship and she feels lucky to have a caring, selfless mother who provided them with such a blessed childhood. Her mom is a huge inspiration to Katie! Katie's fiancĂŠ Jesse Slack is a country music singer and she loves helping him with his social media pages, booking his gigs, as well as accompanying him on the road. Katie's family is completed by her fur-baby, a one-year-old Bernedoodle named Stevie, who is a special love in her life. When she's not with her family or working, you can find Katie either cooking or crafting, sometimes skiing or hiking, and spending lots of time on her parents' farm. Budgeting Andrew Pyle, Senior Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager Pretty soon the chilly winds off the lake will give rise to shorelines covered in a dusting of snow and for those who make their cottage their home; this can be a beautiful time of the year. It is also a time when we start to think about those other expenses at year-end, namely the holiday season and the spending that goes along with it. For many Canadians there is an anxiety that accompanies this season, not only because of the planning that needs to be done but the financial impact that is felt when the credit card bills start rolling in like an icy blast in January. It is particularly worrying given that it is in January and February that working Canadians look for the funds necessary to top up their RRSPs. One proven way to counter this anxiety is to start planning for year-end right now.

Since 1994

Holiday season entertaining, travel and gift giving should be viewed no differently than any other special project done around the home. Figure out what you are willing to spend on these items and begin putting money aside. Having a plan will also steer you away from last-minute binge spending and it will also give you the added time to look for better deals. Once you have a budget, try sticking to it and for those like me who inevitably hunt for a parking space in the mall parking lot the day before Christmas Eve, aim to complete your shopping weeks before the big day. At the same time, you can also start to give some thought to your saving plan. For those that leave their RRSP contributions until the last minute, try putting your money away

earlier before the January bills show up. This is what we call ‘paying yourself first’ and it can be done either in a lump sum approach before year-end, or by putting in set amounts each month during the year. This not only relieves the stress associated with finding cash before the RRSP deadline, but it is smart investing. The reason is that your investments inside the RRSP are earning income and growing tax free, while money invested outside is not. And putting money away sooner means less money available in the bank that might go towards binge spending at year-end. Kids!! Don’t Forget to Write to Santa before December 11th & Get a Letter Back! There's room for everyone on the Nice List at Santa’s Office this Christmas! Santa has Postal Elf’s that are ready to help Santa answer letters each year. There are 3 important rules to remember when sending a letter to Santa: Make sure to include your full return address. Santa may know where you live, but his postal elves need this information to deliver your letter!

 Santa really loves to read about children’s favourite sports, jokes, school activities or family fun (even if Mom and Dad help with the writing). And, of course, he loves to get pictures and drawings from even his youngest pen pals!  Send your letter soon. December 11 is the last day to mail letters to Santa (it’s a long way to the North Pole and back!). Letters mailed after December 11 may not receive a reply before Christmas, so remind the kids to get on it! Santa's address:

Hanging Christmas Tree Every year we make sure to add something new to our collection of Christmas decorations. Sometimes we make things, and sometimes it’s something like a new strand of lights, or another garland. This year we made something new, the kids loved decorating a second ‘tree’. We used sticks we had pruned from one of the trees in our yard, but it would add to the adventure to go out on a walk to find the perfect sticks to make your hanging tree. You will need enough sticks that you can trim them to make the multi-level shape of your tree. I then used fine wire to attach them. I started at the bottom with the largest stick and worked my way to the top of the tree. You could also use string or twine for more movement in your creation. Be sure to make a loop at the top of the tree so it can be hung up. Once I had all the branches attached the kids were able to decorate it. We used decorations we found at the dollar store, or decorations that didn’t make it onto our family Christmas tree. Tie each decoration on with a little bit of thread or fishing line. Another option if your tree will be close enough to an outlet is to add lights. Help your kids get creative, there are so many ideas on Pinterest or in craft books for fantastic Christmas decorations you could make yourself and use for the tree. Maybe decorate the tree with other finds from a walk in the woods; pinecones, moss, leaves. The possibilities are endless. Emily Ireland

Expanding Horizons of Health Care Energy practitioners are trained to work with an invisible energy force that flows through our bodies, and when this energy flow is blocked or unbalanced you can become sick or have pain. The goal of these therapies is to unblock or re-balance your energy force, thus allowing your body to heal itself. Energy therapies include Qi gong, Therapeutic touch, Reiki, Acupuncture, Magnet therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Body Work or Body Talk, Shamanic Healing, Polarity Therapy and Emotion Code Therapy. Energy work is a holistic approach, working to heal on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels (there are a growing number of scientific studies documenting this). However, it often does have a clear impact on physical and emotional health and mental functioning. One highly positive aspect of energy work is that there are no risks or side effects. It "does no harm." Probably the most common, immediate, readily identifiable benefit is that it puts most people into a state of deep relaxation. This alone has powerful benefits for health--it allows the body, mind, and emotions to heal and restore themselves. Often this state of relaxation lasts for many days following the treatment. While no reputable healer would promise you specific physical benefits, people often do find that they heal more quickly from illness and injury after having a treatment. Pain can also be reduced or relieved, making it an effective form of natural pain relief. Contact me for a no obligation consultation to discuss how Energy Medicine can help you! t I t e L Snow Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we've no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

It doesn't show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping; The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. When we finally say good night, How I'll hate going out in the storm; But if you really hold me tight, All the way home I'll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we're still good-bye-ing, But as long as you love me so. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne 1945 Photo by Katie Ellement
