A Time for Renewal NOT Retirement For many of us the word retirement feels like a bad word signaling the end of your life. This is far too much drama for what should be the very best years to come. This subject needs a change of outlook. I've decided to look upon my future retirement as a time to renew, a time to review my life and spend time dallying with the dreams of my younger years. And why not, I've gathered a ton of wit and wisdom along the way... all the better for chasing those wayward dreams. What do you want the rest of your life to look like? Stop and think about it… I mean really think about It. What gives you pleasure? What are some of the dreams you never pursued that you could pursue when you retire? Where are the places that you always wanted to see but never had the chance? What are those things you always wanted to try but never did?
Time is the thing I look forward to in my retirement. Not time to be bored or feel sorry for myself….no not that kind of time. This is a time to reflect, review and renew one’s life, to make choices for happiness and dreams for the pages of your life’s book, yet to be written. Whatever your financial situation when you retire, dream and plan the future you want. What will your legacy be? What will people remember most about you?
One day, when my son looks back at my life, through all the good and the bad, the one thing I hope he finds is inspiration. I hope my Time flies by us and we seem to go through life moment by life, inspires him to dream. moment, each of us trying to keep up with all that life demand, By Donna Matthews, Editor leaving us spent and befuddled with rare moments to dream. A wise man once said, “when God made time, he made plenty of it.”
THREE ladies were discussing the travails of getting older. One said, "Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand in front of the refrigerator and can't remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich." The second lady chimed in, "Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can't remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down." The third one responded, "Well, I'm glad I don't have that problem; knock on wood!" as she rapped her knuckles on the table, then told them "That must be the door, I'll get it!"

Cottage Lifts Off Grid’ Cottage country offers some very interesting landscapes, structures are built where nature allows. Many cottages in the area remain water access, meaning if your cottage is built on a hill or rock face you are carrying everything up that hill, every visit. Hillside homes and cottages offer many benefits, gorgeous sunsets, a breeze that keeps bugs away, and picturesque views of the lake or landscape. Long steep climbs can make enjoying your property difficult. Families are less likely to make use of the waterfront when they have a long climb back and forth. Climbs like this also limit accessibility, narrowing who can visit, and the age and mobility of owners who aren’t ready to sell. Cottage Lifts is here to help, with more than 25 years of experience they can help you realise the benefits of a lift system. Cottage Lifts has been working to continuously improve their lifts, creating a superior product to compliment your property and its individual requirements. Newly added features of their lifts include a new braking system, this is in addition to the four independent safety controls they already have. This new brake is fully automatic and will stop a lift car before you even know you need to stop. Every lift comes with remote control, capable of covering a quarter mile. In an effort to offer an off-grid lift, Cottage Lifts has been working on a prototype for about 5 years; and they are happy to announce it has been perfected! In their effort to find the perfect power source they
Since 1994
tested many options, solar systems didn’t have enough energy, a battery system was too expensive, and a generator – expensive, large and cumbersome. Cottage lifts has now created a system that is totally independent of any conventional form of energy. It is a gasoline powered hydraulic system, it has an electric start and stops automatically at the top and bottom. You can find a demonstration model set up at Cottage Lifts showroom, stop in and take a ride! Cottage Lifts, Bracebridge www.cottagelifts.com

Jewel Just Fine Wines Bottling your own wine has become a popular trend lately, allowing you to choose a wine specifically designed to suit your taste and personal preferences. Many people bottle wine to take to the cottage, saving themselves those last minute trips to the store when unexpected guests arrive, and lasting the season through. Located in Warsaw, Jewel Just Fine Wines is just 20 minutes North East of Peterborough, making them an easy stop on the way to cottage country. In April of 2017, Rachel Bleakley took ownership of Jewel Wines and has been making small improvements since; though the main processes involved have not changed. Her motto: ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!’ Customers have many options for making their own wine, beer and liqueurs because Jewel Wines draws from two main suppliers rather than one. At Jewel they use fresh spring water from their well, which undergoes rigorous filtration. Clients say their wine tastes better, and is better quality, compared to facilities that use town water. Jewel Just Fine Wines offers stellar service, monthly sales and specials, and a bonus referral system. Rachel and her team are consistently striving to give each customer the best experience and superior product. A happy and satisfied wine drinker is a beautiful thing! Those Were The Days
“Good Times, Bad Times”
For the past thirty years I have been fortunate to be given the privilege and opportunity to write some of my memories for various newspapers. Since I was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, many of my most vivid recollections come from my experiences in that city. I was eleven years old when World War Two ended so dozens of my columns have recounted the six years of horror, hope and victory. Located across the river from Detroit, Michigan, Windsor is an historical city recognized as one of the main focal points of many War of 1812 battles.
During my lifetime I have witnessed the 1945 Ford Motor Company ninety-nine day strike that saw Windsor streets deliberately clogged with hundreds of cars and buses, when thousands of men and women marched through East Windsor completely shutting down the entire city. I witnessed the destructions of the main street’s Kresge Department Store due to fire and also Ouellette Avenues Metropolitan Store which literally blew up in 1960 killing 10 and injuring 100. I was less than a kilometer away from the 1946 tornado that killed 17 people and minutes away from the 1974 tornado that claimed nine lives. We sat on the bank of the Detroit River at the end of our street listening to the sound of gunshots and watching the west side of Detroit burn during the 1967 riots. I was able to watch the great Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis train and even tour his private club on Lake St. Clair. Terry Sawchuk, Eddie Shack and a host of other famous hockey players began their careers with the Windsor Spifires. In 1956 a very young Martin Luther King gave a speech in Windsor before a throng of 60,000 people all of whom were attending the world famous Emancipation Day celebrations at Windsor’s Jackson Park. The memories are endless, but one sticks out as the oddest which actually attracted the most gawkers, it was the sinking of the M V Montrose in the Detroit River directly under the Ambassador Bridge. On July 30, 1962, a 440 foot British freighter on it’s maidem voyage laden with a cargo of wine and 200 tons of aluminum heading for the Great Lakes swung into deeper waters right into the path of a tug pushing a barge filled with cement. Although the tug blew an alarm whistle and attempted to reverse it’s forward motion, the ever fierce current in the Detroit River propelled the tug almost headon into the freighter causing a 42 foot gash on the port side near the bow. The ship began taking on water and eventually rolled over settling on the bottom. The grateful crew was rescued by a local fireboat. It took three months to patch the hole and righten the ship before towing it to safer waters. According to newspapers, more people gathered “to see for themselves” that particular misadventure than any other event in Windsor’s history. Russ Sanders, epigram@nexicom.net

There is much to be said about the wowfactor when it comes to appliances. New appliances come with a lot of bells and whistles; from Wifi and Smart Technology, to a rustic or modern appearance, there are what seems like endless options with many benefits. Upgrading your appliances can do many things for the appearance and worth of your home. If you are considering selling, updating older appliances will modernise your space and add value for prospective buyers. New appliances are also very energy efficient, meaning lowering costs to operate. If you are thinking of upgrading your kitchen appliances consider the ‘activity triangle’ when installing them. The three busiest areas in a kitchen are the ‘Washing’ Zone (Sink & Dishwasher), the ‘Hot’ Zone (Oven & Stove) and the ‘Cool’
Since 1994
Zone (Fridge & Freezer). Together these three areas form the ‘activity triangle’ and depending on the shape of your kitchen streamlining this ‘triangle’ can mean a lot for future ease of use. A new and interesting feature in the world of appliances is using steam. Cooking with steam is becoming very popular, it offers many benefits, steaming food is healthier, steaming leftovers leaves the food moist and not dried out, steam also allows for powerful cleaning, so scrubbing that oven is a thing of the past. Using a steam washer to clean your clothes cuts down on allergens and bacteria with elevated temperatures, and also removes stains quickly, lengthening the life of your clothing. Smart home technology is a popular feature that offers numerous practical features, such as washers and dryers that
can be started remotely. Some will even send you a text message when the cycle has finished. Some fridges will create a recipe based on ingredients present in your fridge. You can even turn your coffee maker on from bed and now there are garbage cans that will monitor your waste items and generate orders for replacements online. New appliances will lower your energy costs, improve the look and value of your home, and give you the added benefit of convenient smart home technology.

Taking Cottage Country for Granted By Tania Moher
It’s easy to do, you’ve lived here for years, you get so caught up in your busy day to day activities, and you miss the beauty that is all around you. As a kid/teen I never understood why my cousins would get so excited to come for a visit, they were always thrilled when we took walks up to my grandparent’s farm to feed the animals, or took a walk to the woods to collect sap to make maple syrup. I would tag along because lets face it cousins are awesome – but I never saw what they saw – to me it was normal everyday stuff. Looking back now I have come to realize that I was so lucky to have had those experiences. If I had grown up in a busy city I would never have gotten to witness a snapping turtle being pulled from our front pond after indulging on some of our gold fish, or our bay full of carp during spawning season – so thick you would think you could walk across it. Not to mention the beautiful sunsets shimmering across the lake. We had the opportunity to have so many different “pets” along the way as well, we had a blue heron that claimed our boardwalk as his very own, a few chipmunks that got so used to us leaving peanuts for them, they would take them from our hands. I now have children of my own, and my parents are soon moving from my childhood home. This has me reminiscing about all the fantastic things I have gotten to enjoy and I hope that my boys get to experience all that living in cottage country has to offer.

Fall INN-To
a Groove…
There’s a gentle quiet that surrounds the mornings come September, the mist quietly rising from the water, gently evaporating the summers warmth. A sense of change transpires, quiet reflection, an acknowledgement of summers end and the arrival of autumn. Nature comes alive with vibrant burnt oranges and reds, and the yearning for the comfort of cozy sweaters, warm fires, and home cooked meals fill one’s mind. This change is also reflected in the people of cottage country. We say goodbye to our summer visitors, and those who call this beautiful area home begin to ready for the winter ahead. At the Inn, this same sense of change is reflected in all areas. Our planning evolves from summer adventures of fishing trips, and paddling to studio & antiquing tours, wine tastings and events. Here at the Burleigh Falls Inn our family visitors have gone, replaced with romantic couple escapes, special events, weddings and corporate guests; all hoping for a glimpse of autumns spectacular colours. We love summer and its bustle, but this slow-down into fall is a welcome change. As of September 6th, The Burleigh Falls Inn will celebrate a successful first year. It has been quite the undertaking! An adventure full of excitement, disappointment, anguish, exhaustion, confidence and pride; we’ve experience them all this year. We’ve met hundreds of
Since 1994
inquisitive guests, who stopped by to “see what we were up too” and who have turned into great friends. Many constructive comments have been shared, some we’ve taken to heart, and others we simply file away for a much needed laugh on a rainy day. With much still to do, and so many ideas to explore, we are happy to say we’re not finished yet. A gracious thank you to our staff for believing we could do this, and never giving up, and to our supporters and cheerleaders throughout the community and from afar, we thank you. We’ve had a great adventure so far, and now that we’ve found our groove - here’s to more to come! Submitted by Jennifer Craig, Burleigh Falls Inn www.burleighfallsinn.com 705 654 3441 Advertisement

Your Closing the Cottage Checklist We all love spending time at the cottage relaxing, but somehow the season seems to whiz by. Suddenly it’s time to close the cottage. Getting everything ready for the cold weather is always a chore, so be sure to cover all the bases; which makes your spring opening, a breeze. ✔ Clear out all food items and take the garbage out. ✔ Turn off the main breaker. If you plan to leave a heat source on for the winter, turn off all other breakers but leave that one on. ✔ Open all taps inside and out, draining the lines and open all drain valves. ✔
Connect a garden hose to the bottom valve of your hot water heater and run it outside. Open the lower valve to drain, caution! the water is likely still hot. Once the dripping has stopped, disconnect the hose and place a bowl under the valve to catch any last drips.
✔ Disconnect dishwashers and washing machines and drain the lines. ✔ Disconnect the inlet side of your water pump and leave the valves open. ✔ Flush the toilets and pour a liberal amount of plumbers antifreeze into the bowl as well as the tank. ✔ Pour plumbers antifreeze down each drain including the washing machine. Note; plumbers antifreeze is cheaper than a plumbing repair so don’t be shy. ✔ Add approved septic bacteria to your tank to keep it working over the winter. ✔ Clean out your woodstove and close the damper and door. ✔ For lawnmowers and chainsaws, run them until they are out of gas and store safely. ✔ Store all electronics and valuables out of site or under a bed. ✔ Put outside toys and furniture away into a locked shed, including the bbq with the tank turned off and disconnected. ✔ Take pictures or a video of both inside and out. Lock all windows and doors and close the blinds. Board up the windows and doors if possible. This checklist will make both closing and opening the cottage much easier, giving you more time to enjoy the beauty of cottage country. Safe drive home; remember to take the cottage keys! Thanksgiving Traditions By Tania Moher
Another tradition is a trip to an orchard, where cool breezes and crisp autumn air make spending the afternoon outdoors picking apples a favourite ritual for many people. Cats & Catnip
A Match Made in Heaven As most cat owners know: cats are crazy for catnip. Give kitties some catnip and most of them will be rolling about in a state of ecstasy within seconds. Why do they do that? Here are a few interesting facts about catnip and its effects on your feline friend.

• Catnip’s effect on cats was first written about over 200 years ago but it wasn’t until the first half of the 20th century that scientists began to study what was going on and why. During this time, researchers isolated the main constituents in Catnip that have such an amusing effect on cats. • The Catnip plant produces chemicals to protect it from predators. Among these chemicals is nepetalactone, which defends the plant from marauding insects, this and related substances are also responsible for Catnip’s effects on cats. Please note that catnip is non-toxic to cats under normal circumstances; however, cats should be introduced gradually to the plant, in case they have an unusual reaction to it. • The active substances in catnip have to be inhaled rather than eaten to produce a response. Cats can detect minute amounts of the chemicals they love, and soon after finding the source of the aroma, they show a common behavior pattern. They chew the plant or toy. Then they rub their cheeks, chins, and bodies against it, which helps to release more of the substances they crave from the microscopic bulbs on the surface of the leaves and stems. • Catnip’s effects are short lived. After 5 to 10 minutes, cats lose interest, but give them an hour or two and they’ll begin to respond again. This is because cats’ noses and brains become temporarily “immune” to the pleasures of catnip and need time to recover. • Not all cats love catnip. Kittens don’t start to show interest until they near sexual maturity. Some cats don’t react at all and it’s thought that catnip sensitivity is inherited. • Domestic cats love to tumble in Nepeta cataria, and lions, leopards, bobcats, and ocelots love to, too. Cats and catnip are an entertaining pairing. Invest in a catnip toy or grow your own plants, and sit back and enjoy the fun along with your pet.

Dr. Terry’s Zoo Fall has arrived! The harvesting of this year’s crop of catnip in the garden is well underway much to the delight of our six felines. Fresh or dried this is their drug of choice. Six roly-poly felines getting down and chilled is always an amusing encounter. The milkweed growing in our garden has attracted multiple monarch butterflies. The David Suzuki Foundation website encourages residents to plant milkweed to aid these butterflies that undertake the longest insect migration on earth 5000 miles from Canada to Mexico.
As a pet owner, you are probably more concerned about keeping your dog's vaccinations up-to-date than you are about maintaining the oral health of your dog's teeth. It is just as important to remember to brush your dog's teeth daily. Unfortunately, dogs are subjected to the same dental problems as humans. Your dog can develop tooth decay and bad breath. Too much tartar and plaque can produce bad breath and also inflamed gums, which are a sign of gingivitis. Gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease, can develop into more serious dental problems such as bone and tissue loss. If your dog has too much tartar and plaque buildup, he will need to see a veterinarian to get a professional cleaning. The vet will put your dog under anesthesia and inspect the teeth for any cavities or dental issues. The process can be costly. The best alternative to reversing gingivitis and eliminating bad breath is to brush your dog's teeth daily. It is easier to train the dog to accept brushing when he is young. Using a toothpaste made specifically for dogs is much safer than using human toothpaste, which can make your dog sick. Slowly introduce the toothpaste by allowing the dog to taste it. Then let him become familiar with the toothbrush and toothpaste in his mouth. Eventually, you can pull his mouth back, and gently brush his teeth. The back teeth need to be brushed thoroughly. Continuing neglect of your dog's teeth can eventually lead to serious diseases such as lung and heart problems. There may be a correlation between coronary disease and the bacteria involved with gum disease. The theories are that the bacteria can enter your dog's blood and contribute to clot formation, which can cause a pulmonary embolism or heart attack. If you brush your dog's teeth daily, you may be preventing these serious health problems from becoming an issue.

Spinnaker our King Charles spaniel has gladly exchanged his sailor life vest to pursue indoor activities - cocooning by the fireplace. Food, followed by comfort and rawhides are Spinnaker’s priority. Forty percent of pet owners blame their best friends for sleep disruption. Experts advise pets should be removed from the bedroom and given a warm comfortable bed. Chilli Pepper, Amigo and Spinny and three felines say good luck with that one! Prince Spinnaker displaces any feline who dares invade his bedroom domain by dropping down his derriere with recall aplomb. Shortly after the snoring begins. Two air cleaners and a fan fail to deafen the sweet sounds of Spinny sawing logs. Onion Sauce, one of our nighthawk felines, always arrives a 3:30 a.m. with a waking kiss - a touch of claw followed by a stern poke if petting doesn’t promptly ensue. Thank you for morning coffee! Enjoy cocooning this fall with your best buddies. Most perennials require a cut back before the next year’s growth emerges in the Spring. You can choose to cut them down to four to six inches in height in the Fall or Early Spring. It’s your call. Our Display Garden here at Griffin’s Greenhouses is cut back in the Fall because we don’t have time to do it in the Spring and we prefer the look of a clean landscape over winter. You may choose to leave up all perennials or even just certain ones (ornamental grasses and hydrangeas, for example) and deal with them in the Spring. Be aware that the foliage is slimy in the Spring and the gardens are muddy, so the task might be more of a chore than anticipated.

Tender Summer bulbs such as dahlias and cannas are removed, scrubbed free of excess soil and left in the outdoor sun to dry for about a week. Do store them in a paper bag in a cool location indoors for the winter. Tropical plants can be sprayed with preventative insecticidal soap and gradually brought to a sunny window inside your home and away from frosty nights.
Tucking in some tulips and daffodils that will bloom in April and early May while the perennials are leafing up, is a fabulous way to add succession of bloom to your garden. This leaf mulch insulation should be hilled up around the base of roses and tender perennials (Rose of Sharon and perennial hibiscus) around mid-November, as one of the last tasks of the season. How to Network Effectively A Chamber Membership can provide many things – marketing opportunities, savings and discounts, a voice to influence policy, consumer credibility, and much more. Perhaps one of the most common reasons for a business, or individual, to join a Chamber of Commerce is to network with the local business community. Meeting potential clients, partners, and sponsors, can help you grow professionally, and benefit your business. The word ‘networking’ can be intimidating for some. The idea of being in a room full of strangers, and starting a conversation without prior introduction isn’t exactly appealing. To help you master the skill of networking, the Kawartha Chamber is hosting a Networking Workshop on Wednesday, October 25th from 5-7 PM at Westwind Inn on the Lake in Buckhorn. This workshop is part of the B.O.S.S. (Business Owners Sharing Solutions) series that the Chamber introduced this year. Attendees will hear from local professionals as they share practical tips on effective networking, and discuss how networking can help your business, and help you grow professionally. After the discussion period, attendees will take what they learned and put their new skills into action in a speed networking format. To register for this workshop, or for more information, visit the Events Calendar at www.kawarthachamber.ca, or call the Chamber office at 705-652-6963. The Kawartha Chamber of Commerce & Tourism proudly represents businesses in Curve Lake, Douro-Dummer, North Kawartha, Selwyn, and Trent Lakes.

Today, More Than Ever, We’re Stronger Together
Celebrating the Business of Excellence
“What have you done for me lately?” Chambers of Commerce across Ontario have a long-standing challenge of letting local businesses know all the benefits of joining their Chamber. “Of course I joined the local Chamber; it’s just what businesses do” simply isn’t enough. Chambers of Commerce need to offer a business case – a value proposition – of what they offer. The Lindsay Chamber has been the voice of local business since 1958. With so many issues confronting businesses in our rural communities, today more than ever we’re stronger together. Membership really does have its privileges. The Lindsay Chamber has many concrete benefits. In addition to social media promotion, tourist referrals, discounted insurance, the Chamber has enhanced its focus on member-driven services and business advocacy. Our Chamber is offering skills-based workshops – in response to listening to what our members tell us they need – on topics from “managing Millennials” to diversity training. We are also planning to help members get grants to save on hydro; learn about the local labour market from the President of Fleming College; and prepare for the Wal-Mart in Lindsay. We are also collaborating with the Bobcaygeon, Fenelon and Norland/Coby Chambers and creating a network for young professional in our area to help keep them here! Come work with us at this exciting time. Share your views. Make your voice heard. Engage your Chamber of Commerce. Call Colleen at: 705-324-2393 to join today.
The 14th Annual Peterborough Business Excellence Awards is our way to publicly recognize and honour local businesses that have demonstrated a passion for excellence during the national, Small Business Week. This year the chamber is taking the show to Showplace performance Centre.

Is Not Just About the Numbers It seems strange to talk about an end to summer when the weather this year didn’t really feel like summer. However, as the sun starts to set earlier in the day many of us will use the quieter days to think about what it will be like when the sun sets on our career. Sadly, only a minority of Canadians put together comprehensive retirement plans and, of those, less than half will revisit those plans regularly. As I tell people it’s okay to have an aversion to budgeting and planning as this is normal, yet plan we must if we want to have a retirement lifestyle that we can be happy with. Surprisingly, the easy part of this exercise is doing the calculations. Assembling things like pension information, CPP and OAS eligibility and other sources of income in retirement is quite simple. The difficulty
Since 1994
for some is figuring out exactly what retirement will look like, beginning with when you want to start. Some will spend less in retirement than they did when they worked, while others may choose to boost their spending to meet other objectives, such as increased travel and new hobbies. I encourage individuals and couples to sit back and really think hard about the subjective aspects of retirement and then attach dollars to those aspects where they can. This then gives them a realistic vision of what retirement will cost. From there it’s a matter of seeing whether your expected income streams can cover these expenditures and, if not, how large of a retirement nest egg you will need to create the necessary cash flow. This will include your RRSPs, LIRAs, TFSAs, regular
investment accounts and even the wealth you have generated in a business or corporation. Again, this does not have to be a difficult analysis and once done you will have a good blueprint with which to plan your retirement. But I cannot emphasize enough the ‘soft’ details about retirement planning. Staying healthy, knowing what you want to do the day after you step away from work and whether or not this is just a transition into another career. Everything should be on the table so that your retirement sunset is as golden as the ones you see this month. Small Business Ideas for Extra Income During Retirement Many individuals who face their retirement years do not feel ready to spend their days golfing or playing card games. Many people need the stimulation of being among the public with specific tasks that provide challenge and a sense of accomplishment. Here are five small businesses you can start that will keep bodies and minds active, as well as bring in additional money. 1 - House sitting Taking care of property while homeowners are out of town can be a good way to get additional income and provide a service that is highly desirable in some communities. Some homesitters also provide plant care, which can be an attractive feature for many homeowners. 2 - Dog Walking/Pet Sitting With many people working longer hours or with long commutes, dog-walking services have become a necessity for many pet owners. If you are good with animals or have dogs of your own, you can use your pet ownership skills to help others care for their pets. 3 - Personal Companion With more people choosing to age in their own homes, home care for the elderly is becoming a popular service to help families care for older family members while they are at work. You can take advantage of this new trend in elder care by providing transportation and personal companionship. 4 - Handyman If you are good with your hands and enjoy home improvement projects, you can transfer the knowledge you already have into a business that helps other people with the typical projects that need doing around their homes. 5 - Lawn Care and Gardening If you love to garden and care for lawns, you can provide this service for other homeowners who are too busy or too frail to do this type of work themselves. If you look around your community, you can usually find a number of smaller niches that haven't yet been filled by other businesses. You can use these opening to launch your own small business that can keep you engaged in your retirement, as well as make money for hobbies, travel or other enjoyments.

Tax Planning for Retirees September always feels like a time of new beginnings and some folks take time as the days cool to consider their year-end tax planning. Retirees should examine their yearto-date income and consider whether they should take more or less funds from their registered savings accounts (RRSPs and RRIFs). A few basic reminders: (1) In the calendar year a taxpayer has their 71st birthday, RRSPs must be converted into a RRIF (or annuity) and an amount withdrawn each year. They can also be collapsed and paid in a lump sum, although this would only make sense if the balance is not too large. (2) An RRSP can be converted into a RRIF or annuity at any time, but this forces some defined amount to be included in taxable income each year. (3) Only defined types of pension income qualify for pension splitting. For example, income from company pension plans qualifies at any age, but RRIFs do not until age 65. Some retirees opt to start withdrawing RRSPs earlier than age 71 which spreads the taxable income over a longer period of time. This can be beneficial in a year where income is expected to be lower than in the future, for example if OAS, CPP or pensions have not yet started. If the funds are not required for living expenses, transfer into a TFSA for later use. Other retirees convert some of their RRSPs to RRIFs at age 65 to take advantage of the ability to pension split. Pension splitting allows one spouse to transfer up to 50% of their pension income to the other for tax calculation purposes only. This can result in much lower tax owing if that one spouse is in a higher tax bracket than the other. The transferee spouse also qualifies for the $2,000 pension income tax credit. Each year you elect to do a pension split, complete and sign form T1032 and keep it on file in case CRA asks to see it. Couples who have not remembered to split their pension income can go back and adjust the past three years’ tax returns. Halloween Play-dough When I was a kid my mom always made our own Play-dough at home with me. She was always wary of pre-packaged everything. I can still hear her say ‘Why would we buy it, when we can make it ourselves?” I’m glad she did. Now when I need a quick hands-on project for my kids, this is a go-to. Quick and easy, and holds their attention and imaginations for hours. This is a simple recipe, and the fun is endless! You will need a large pot, large mixing bowl, stirring spoon, measuring spoon, measuring cups, water, flour, alum, salt, oil, and food colouring. Most of these things are easy to find. Any grocery store will carry the ingredients, but you likely have them around the kitchen, so no running out to the store for supplies. The first steps definitely need to be done by an adult, but my kids liked kneading the dough to get all the bumps out once it was cooled off. We separated our orange Play-dough into small portions, rolled them into balls, and wrapped them in plastic wrap with ribbon to look like little pumpkins. The kids are going to hand them out to their class for Halloween! Halloween Play-dough - Measure 2 Cups of Flour in a large mixing bowl - Bring 2 Cups of Water, and ½ Cup of Salt to a boil in large pot until salt is dissolved - Remove from heat, add 2TBS alum, and 2 TBS Cooking Oil, add 10 drops orange food colouring (more if you want super bright colour), stir together (The Alum acts as a preservative, the mixture can be made without it if you prefer) - Pour boiling mixture over flour in mixing bowl and mix well - Eventually the mix will get thick enough that you will have to take the dough out and knead it. Be Careful it will be HOT! Knead until all the lumps and bumps are gone. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for longest lifetime. Emily Ireland

Halloween Trivia
Halloween is almost here. Soon ghosts, goblins and ghouls will be knocking on doors looking for their share of yummy treats. Why not wow them with your Halloween knowledge – perhaps a Fact for a Treat, rather than a trick! Check out these fun and interesting historical Halloween facts. • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. • Jack O’Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. • The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.
• Owls are associated with Halloween because, in Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches. To hear an owls call meant someone was about to die.

Fact or Treat • If you see a spider on Halloween, it is considered a good luck, as it means the spirit of a loved one is guarding you. • The 1978 blockbuster, Halloween, was only made in 21 days on a very limited budget. • The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with an 836 lb. pumpkin.
• The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainopobia. • There really are so-called vampire bats, but they're not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds.
• The first known mention of trick-or-treating in print in North America occurred in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada.
• Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back over 2000 years ago.
