LEADERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS

125 years of collaboration and innovation sets a firm foundation for Cotting School’s future! Our highly specialized school provides an unmatched educational experience for students with special needs between the ages of 3 and 22. Of course, each aspect of our school - academic, therapeutic, medical, athletic, extracurricular - is specifically tailored to help our students reach their highest learning potential and greatest independence. But there is much more. What makes Cotting ... Cotting, is the profound sense of belonging that each student feels. Our students have friends. They are leaders. Our staff see their strengths and build upon them. We cheer their successes. Last year marked the inaugural year of our newly developed Capstone Program for 18-22-year-olds, which has contributed positively to student outcomes. The Cotting Curriculum Institute, comprised of our experienced, Master’s level teachers, researched curricular changes in the areas of Math and Literacy education in order to best meet the needs of our diverse range of learners. Dedicated Science and Social Studies teachers offer differentiated and accessible activities related to these content areas to all of our students. The vibrant HOPEhouse program is an intentional community of seven young adults, boarding 5-days a week throughout the school year, where they practice independent living skills in a supportive setting while also working towards their academic and/or vocational goals. Students in schools across Massachusetts benefit from Cotting’s expertise. Cotting Consulting continues to deliver services to students in their local districts. The team is continuously implementing new high-tech and low-tech solutions for students and helping them meet their educational goals in the setting that is best for them. 2 | Cotting School

We take pride in sharing insights, skills and resources. Making Things Possible: The Parenting Experience was the theme for Cotting’s annual Burr Family Conference, free of charge and open to parents, educators and other professionals from across the east coast. Andrew Solomon, nationally-known author of the book, Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity treated guests to an exceptional keynote talk exploring themes of love and acceptance. Throughout he shared powerful stories from families raising exceptional children who are in some way different from their parents. Working toward our scheduled 10-year reaccreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, we’ve embarked on a self-study to revisit our mission and examine the ways innovation will continue to shape and guide our practice in the years to come. We couldn’t achieve all we have without our exceptional staff and the many dedicated donors, volunteers, and supporters like you, who help us accomplish our mission.

PROGRAMATIC HIGHLIGHTS

At the heart of every student’s Cotting story are the many ways we provide the right tools and supports to meet the individual needs of every learner. Our programming and curricula are differentiated to provide access to challenging content and multiple opportunities to learn and apply skills. Some instructional highlights from this year include:

• Innovative curriculum designed to teach the women’s suffrage and civil rights movements to students through an inventive spin on the popular card game, Uno. A Cotting-developed Social Studies lesson re-wrote the Uno rules to give unfair advantages to different groups of students. The classes practiced various methods of protest including picketing, writing letters, and giving speeches. By anchoring a complex concept in a familiar activity, students were able to deepen their understanding of how to raise their voices for change.

• Students developed and tested their skills as engineers in Science class by designing pine cars, sailboats, and paddleboats and testing them for speed and mobility. Other budding scientists grew Venus flytrap plants, designed objects for the 3D printer, and created their own video games.

• Support for over 70 students participating in work internship experiences, including jobs both on-campus and at over 30 community worksites to help students develop skills in areas such as clerical, food service, maintenance, and human services, as well as a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities run by students such as our Dinners-To-Go meal service.

• We hosted our annual Transition Fair which featured over twenty vendors from agencies supporting young adults with their post-secondary plans. Students and families were able to choose from eight different presentations focused on transition topics such as creating a personalized transition plan, financial planning, guardianship, and community access.

• In Math, we continued to revise and refine our program based on feedback from teachers about student needs. New materials were created, with a particular focus on application of Math skills in academic, vocational, and community settings. It is exciting to watch our students’ stories as learners, community members, and unique individuals unfold! If you have questions about our School or our individualized curriculum approach, I invite you to call or visit any time. I can be reached at 781-862-7323.

TEACHERS AND PARENTS AS PARTNERS “Communication with parents is the key to our youngest students feeling comfortable with their transition to school for the first time, or to a school that is new for them. As the lead teacher in the preschool classroom at Cotting, I view parents as essential to the educational team that we put together to support students. Children as young as three years old are learning what it means to be part of a daily school routine; we want it to feel positive and for them to experience success. Planning a child’s transition from Early Intervention to Cotting’s School Age Program at an early age provides us with the opportunity to identify skills and plan for student outcomes that will benefit each child throughout their school years.” – Alada Caughey, Lead Preschool Teacher, Lower School

“My daughter Lily attended and has since graduated from Cotting School. Lily began as a student in the Cotting School Day Program when she was 16 years old and graduated when she turned 22. I witnessed a dramatic shift in her growth and learning through her years at Cotting. She gained skills for independence and I had never seen her so excited about school. I pursued my interest in working with students with disabilities and now work at Cotting as a Program Assistant. I get to see the strength of Cotting’s academic program and I’m able to provide support to both the students and teaching staff. Every day I am impressed by the teachers I work alongside, and I have a unique view of their dedication to students and the larger Cotting School community.” – Alpona Saha, Program Assistant and former Cotting Parent

THE WHOLE CHILD AND THE ENTIRE FAMILY “Cotting School has supported incredible growth for Jacob in many areas of his life, including his academics, and his social and emotional needs. Having Jacob at Cotting School has also had a positive impact on our family. Thanks to the activities the school provides (family days, BBQ, sports) Jacob’s brother Jared has been part of his twin brother’s life at school, and has learned that he is not the only person with a brother who has special needs. Now Jacob has a better relationship with his brother and I can say that Cotting has helped my two children, and our whole family. We are so pleased to see that Jacob is learning to be happy as he is. Jacob has built a community of friends, which he did not have before. He is excited to do different activities and spend time socially with others.” – Wendy Chong-Lee, Jacob’s Mother

STRONG FOUNDATION AND SUPPORT FOR WHAT COMES NEXT “I love the age range of students (3-22) that I get to work with as an Occupational Therapist at Cotting School. I’ve been doing it for 25 years! I am always excited by the collaboration between students and the dynamic team of Teachers, Parents, Medical staff and Therapists. The team develops solutions that help students achieve their individual education and therapeutic goals. Many aspects of Occupational Therapy promote skills needed in the educational setting, and also in life, promoting independence. A three-year-old student playing with an engaging toy is also working on balance, fine motor and visual motor skills. This activity can develop skills that will encourage participation in the classroom, at home and in the community. Constantly thinking about the skills a student will need next to gain independence helps me to develop a plan for therapy. Access to educational tools, including technology, helps me to make recommendations for solutions that will help students reach their goals. The work students do in OT helps prepare them for what comes next in life whether it is academic, vocational, or social.” – Amy Houghton, Occupational Therapist

“I look towards the future and see a career for myself at Cotting School. For the past four years I’ve been a Program Assistant at Cotting which means I assist a lead teacher in a classroom…but there’s so much more. For students who need the support that Cotting School has to offer, everything is here, and the community is unbelievably supportive! In addition to assisting students in the classroom, I work with students in after school programs and I coach basketball. Getting to know students in many different settings helps me offer them support so they can be more independent. Cotting’s “Circle of Friends” program is one that I get excited about and lead with a colleague. Supporting students in creating and building authentic friendships is very meaningful. The Circle of Friends program supports that goal by taking a different age level of students off site each Friday afternoon and evening for an activity appropriate for the season, such as bowling, mini-golf, going to the mall or the movies. Supporting students in building and creating authentic friendships is essential.” – David Largenton, Program Assistant

David La rg Program enton, Assistan t

After school, Cotting students explore new hobbies and forms of self-expression by choosing from a huge selection of options. After school offerings change periodically, but typically include: Art Basketball Best Buddies Board Games & Puzzles Boys Club Challenger Little League Baseball Cheerleading Chess Club Chorus

Circle of Friends Dance Club Dances Drama Club Girls Club Golf Horseback Riding iPad Club Jewelry Making Photography

HISTORY AND FORWARD THINKING “Through my younger years I attended many schools, but Cotting stands out as my favorite for reasons I still reflect on today. I met my favorite teacher and developed my interests in reading and writing. I graduated from Cotting School in 2011 and followed that up by taking classes at Northshore Community College, I graduated with my Associates Degree in 2017. In addition to supporting my academic interests, everyone at Cotting helped me focus, advance my self-advocacy skills, and find the resources I needed once I graduated. I’m now pursuing a job opportunity that will incorporate my love of writing and photography.”

“As a former Middle School teacher, I appreciate where students ages 11-14 are coming from. Often students coming to Cotting have struggled with the expectations of a typical middle school setting. Sometimes they have experienced isolation or struggle academically and/or socially. Many students this age have difficulty managing a demanding schedule of multiple teachers and format changes. In my current role as Curriculum Specialist and Director of the Middle School I’m proud to be a part of Cotting School’s forward-thinking academic leadership team. Every day is exciting to me because I’m in an intellectually stimulating environment and Cotting School strikes the right balance of support and challenge for the students we serve.” – Ann Buckley, Curriculum Specialist and Middle School Director

MORE THAN A DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM “Katherine has been a student in the Cotting School Day Program since 2012, and in 2017 she applied to the HOPEhouse program — a new program option created in 2017. Knowing that Katherine would be graduating soon we wanted a program that would continue to help her develop skills such as increased responsibility for preparing meals, doing laundry, and coordinating transportation that would complement her academic work. HOPEhouse has been an amazing environment for Katherine. Socially she has grown incredibly, becoming a better communicator with her friends, housemates, and the HOPEhouse staff. The self-advocacy skills she’s gained will serve her well once she graduates.” – Ann O’Connor, Katherine’s Mother

WORK INTERNSHIP EMPLOYERS Project Bridges is Cotting School’s community-based volunteer work experience program. Our students work with local employers to develop their vocational and transitional skills. This program also builds and sustains connections between our school and the surrounding community, so that our students are empowered to view themselves as workers and as vital members of the greater community outside of their home and school.
