5 Tips to Help You Gain Self-Confidence and Let Your Light Shine
W
e have all seen that one person walk in the room and they emanate confidence and authority. A beam of light seems to be shining around them like an impenetrable shield. Their self confidence level is very high and boy does it show. Self-confidence is said to be one of the best outfits a girl can wear. So why aren’t we all wearing it? Many times we are letting our confidence be dictated by what others think or feel about us instead of what we ourselves feel. Over time the confidence we do have, can be whittled down by others if we allow it to be. When we hold the value about what other’s think of us over what we feel about ourselves, it can lead down a dangerous and destructive path. There are some things you can do to stay on a more positive road and let your light shine.
5 Tips to Shine 1. Learn new things Learning a new skill will help widen your knowledge base. Gaining new talents or skills can not only help you professionally but also personally. As an added benefit, learning new things also usually leads you to meeting new people. We can all use some new friendly faces in our circle of influence.
2. Evaluate the source Of course we all receive negative vibes or criticism often but when this happens there is something you must do first. This is to evaluate the source. Many people have trouble even liking themselves and therefore easily find fault in others. When you evaluate the source it makes it easier to shrug off and ignore negativity. The more we love ourselves and more secure we are with who we are, the less that other people’s negative opinions matter.
3. Focus on your strengths
2
W
e all have things we excel at. Spend some time thinking on what attributes or talents you possess. Think of ways to highlight these in your life. Focusing on the positive will steer your thoughts off the things you feel you could do better. You may be surprised and find you actually have some talents you didn’t realize you had.
4. Face Your Fears
Facing a fear head on is an incredible way to build up self-confidence. When you stand and look fearin the face and do it scared you will feel amazing. It is a rush and a huge ego booster. Facing your fears will leave you eager and feeling ready to take on your next challenge. Before you know it your confidence has been raised and your fears will have shrunk.
T
5. Evaluate Your Self Often aking an honest and introspective look at you and your life as a whole will provide insight. This will allow you to keep your power and make you less likely to fall victim to others negative opinions. By looking inward we can see what we need to improve on and any adjustments we can make.
W
e can use these tips to gain perspective on what we choose to raise or lower our confidence. Self-confidence is a skill that if learned at a younger age could be very beneficial. Success in our life is built by the cornerstone of self-confidence. The more confident we are the less we allow to stand in our way and we able to reach our goals and dreams faster. Loving ourselves and realizing what a gift we truly are will help our light shine bright.

Where are you from and where did you grow up? Born and Raised in LA! How long have you been modeling? I've been modeling on and off for about 10 years. When you were younger is this something you thought you would be doing when u got older? I never thought I'd be modeling. I was a shy kid until middle school. When I was in high school I always wanted to be an actress. I would do background extra work and a few acting classes, but modeling never crossed my mind. Do you have brothers or sisters and are u the oldest? Youngest? I have an older half sister and brother. Who are some big influences in your life? Tyra Banks. When I started modeling, I always watched America's Next Top Model. I would study everything about posing, runway and smizing! She inspired me to follow my dreams no matter what size I am. Will Smith! I love him! He is someone I look up to as a role model. He's funny, outgoing, very intelligent, and a great guy. Whenever I am having an off day, I'll watch his motivational videos and it'll cheer me right up. Who would you like to sit down with today and have a conversation with? Will Smith. When I first seen him on Fresh Prince, I thought, WOW! This guy is hilarious. He would always keep a smile on my face no matter what mood I am in. He's a wonderful actor and a great family man. I'm not one to get star struck, but if I were to ever meet him, I don't know how I would react. I'm not sure if I would be nervous and get quiet or if I would start crying all over the place. Or both! For someone just starting out in modeling, what advice would u give them? Know your limits. If you're not comfortable doing
5
something, don't do it. It's easy to be taken advantage of in this industry and you need to be strong and stand your ground. Also, be original! What’s a pet peeve of yours in the plus modeling community? The drama! If everyone just focused on themselves rather than trying to bring other people down or block their blessings, then everyone would get along. Do you like the term plus size model or curvy model or just model I like the term EXTRA Sexy Model! ;) But I don't mind being called plus size or curvy model. People who are not in the modeling community and u tell them you’re a plus size model, what are some of the reactions you get? People love it! They start asking a zillion questions and once I show them my pictures.... That's it. SOLD! Everyone so far has been very encouraging and supportive towards me. I really appreciate it and am honored they think so highly of me.
Being a plus woman what are a few things u almost always deal with on a daily basis? When I was younger, I had a lot of verbal abuse about my look and my weight. Body confidence is something I still deal with. You would never be able to tell just by looking at my photos, but sometimes I still doubt myself and question myself if something looks good on me or not. Body confidence is something I continue to work on and one day will be 100% confident and won't have to question what I have on.
6
What are a few shows you have walked in? I have walked in Style Fashion Week, BET Experience, LA Fashion Week, Virgin Islands Fashion Shows, Gospel Festivals, and much more. Do u think the plus modeling world will ever be fully accepted in the main stream? No. Some things are just never fully accepted. You just must ignore those who don't and embrace those who do! Someone getting into modeling...how much can they expect to spend to be ready for photoshoots and runway? There is no exact amount on how much you'll be spending, but just know that as a model you are a business. Every business that starts up must invest their time and money into doing something they are passionate about and love. You will meet people who are willing to collaborate with you and do photography, styling, hair, makeup, etc. for free and then you will meet people who will charge you. You can't expect everything to be free when you are first starting out. Make sure you have funds to cover the basic needs. How tall are you? What are your three basic measurements BWH for designers that may see this? I am 5'9. Bust: 42C Waist: 34 Hips: 47 Dress:14 At the end of the day ...sort of speak. What do u want to take away from modeling? The definition of beauty! Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. There are more campaigns about the variation of beautiful women, but there are still closed doors and opportunities for us. I love how they are making plus size barbie dolls in different sizes and ethnicities. But to add to that, a plus size Disney Princess would be great! I would love to see that!

LET’S TALK WORKPLACE BULLYING
A
ccording to an article I read from Catherine Mattice, President of the National Workplace Bullying Coalition, the current economic, political and social climate the workplace has seen an influx of negative behaviors including, but not limited to, incivility, bullying, and sexual harassment. Unfortunately, not all of these negative behaviors are considered illegal, and therefore organizations lack a sense of accountability for, and urgency in addressing them. Another reason organizations fail to address negativity is that costs are difficult to quantify. While negativity is indeed expensive, some of the repercussions cannot be explicitly stated on a balance sheet or in an expense report. However, the recent increase of these negative behaviors has peaked researcher’s interests. Recent studies are showing that, “today’s globallycompetitive business environment has made a positive corporate culture a critical aspect of success for firms” (Sadri and Lees). This is because when negativity plagues the organization, employees are more likely to engage in counter productive work behaviors, voluntarily resign, and put the organization at risk of costly lawsuits. Bottom line, addressing negativity is vital for protecting your business, and your competitive advantage.
S
tarting at the lower end of the spectrum of negative behavior is incivility. Incivility is, “low-intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect” (Andersson & Pearson). It consists of micro aggressions that, if allowed to flourish, can escalate into more egregious acts such as bullying, harassment and violence. In fact, a recent national poll found that, “90% of respondents believed that incivility is a serious problem and that is contributes to violence and erodes moral values” (Pearson et al). In other words, a simple disrespectful comment can derail the work of an employee for an extended period, costing the organization in lost productivity. According to a recent study conducted by Christine Porath and Christine Pearson, well-known researchers on the topic of negative behaviors in the workplace, “employees that experienced uncivil behaviors at work intentionally reduced their work efforts and the quality of their work, thereby diminishing overall unit effectiveness” (Pearson and Porath cited in Laschinger et al.). Employees on the receiving end of incivility intentionally stop doing their best work. Employees also, “purposefully decreased the amount of time they spent at work,” and approximately five percent of the respondents stated that that their experiences, “led them to steal property from the organization as retaliation.” (Pearson et al.). All of these counter productive work behaviors add up and although you can’t record wasted time or low-quality work in your accounting books, these issues are still costly. 10
N
egative behaviors if allowed to flourish result in a negative environment where illegal acts go unchecked. While certain behaviors are not illegal, they can become a gateway for illegal behavior such as harassment and violence – which means costly litigation. By allowing legal negative behaviors to thrive the organization creates a culture where employees don’t speak up when illegal harassment or violence occur. In other words, failing to address legal negative behaviors shows employees that the organization doesn’t care about them or their well-being. In turn, employees don’t speak up at all even when the behavior is illegal. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, “Roughly three out of four individuals who experienced harassment never even talked to a supervisor, manager, or union representative about the harassing conduct” (Feldblum & Lipnic). As a result, illegal behaviors thrive until employees get lawyers involved because they feel HR won’t address the behavior. As an organization competing in a tight market, lawsuits can be detrimental, not only in direct costs but also in indirect costs. Jon Hyman a partner in the Labor & Employment group of Kohrman Jackson Krantz wrote,” Defending a case through discovery and a ruling on a motion for summary judgment can cost an employer between $75,000 and $125,000” (Hyman) and that’s if the employer wins. In a recent article it was stated that Fox news spent upwards of $45 million dollars in one year to address the investigation of Bill O’Reilly (Farber). Other indirect costs to consider include lost income and smaller candidate pools attributed to a negative employer brand and. A public lawsuit can influence consumers to go elsewhere for products and services, as well as influence top talent to seek jobs elsewhere, resulting in both substantialloss of income and injured competitive advantage.
11
I
n the end, negativity is expensive and even the smallest act of incivility can hurt the organization in a variety of ways. Employees who experience a negative work environment are less productive, more likely to voluntarily resign, and put the organization at risk of litigation. Positivity on the other hand as a myriad of beneficial effects. Employees who are engaged and happy at work act with concern for the business and are therefore are more productive and perform better. A recent study found that engaged employees outperform disengaged employees by 202% (Dale Carnegie cited in Biro). They also promote the organization which creates an employer brand that attracts the top talent necessary for maintaining competitive advantage. A 2016 research study by Brandon Hall Group found that organizations that prioritize engagement - and link it to performance - have employees who are 62% more likely to promote the organization internally and externally over those who do not. This means an increase in both customers and qualified job applicants (Friedman, et al). A positive work environment also encourages employees to speak up when they feel that their colleagues have acted inappropriately. The community bands together and stomps out the negativity, ultimately protected the business from costly lawsuits in the future. It’s an organizations ethical duty to ensure that employees are thriving, and in turn the organization will too.

Who would you like to sitdown with today and have a conversation with? “I’d love to sit down with Oprah. Her wisdom would be amazing to listen and soak in.” For someone just starting out in modeling, what advice would u give them? “Do your research and don’t expect opportunities to be handed to you. I know there’s a lot of people asking how they start to Model but they never even open up the internet to research how. It’s all about being a go getter and putting yourself out there.” Whats a pet peeve of yours in the plus modeling community? “A pet peeve of mine is models being judged for not being the “right type” of plus size. There is no right type, the point of having a plus community is to represent all bodies. There is no cookie cutter perfect plus size model body.” Do you like the term plussize model or curvy model or just model? I was never bothered by any of those terms, plus size, plus model, curve Model, it’s not offensive to me. I would like to just be referred to as a model though since it’s visibly clear I’m plus.” People who are not in the modeling community and u tell them ur a plussize model, what are some of the reactions you get? “They immediately light up and ask lots of questions. They always give compliments and appreciate models now days can represent all body types.” Being a plus woman what are a few things u almost always deal with on a daily basis? Well first of all it’s gotta be the chub rub, my thighs have known each other my entire life and love to get cozy. Male attention can turn into a slight obsession over body size and that can be uncomfortable.” Do u think the plus modeling world will ever be fully accepted in the main stream? I think it’s already heading that direction whether closed minded people like it or not.” Someone getting into modeling...how much can they expect to spend to be ready for photoshoots and runway? “If you are working with a professional team I would say expect to spend a couple hundred, upwards to a grand with the whole set up including H&MU, stylist, multiple looks, photos and editing. It’s all worth it though for the time and effort that goes into a great shoot” How tall are you? What are your three basic measurements BWH for designers that may see this? “I’m 5’8 1/2 and my BWH would be 44 , 38, 51” At the end of the day ...sort of speak..what do u want to take away from modeling? “I want to take away the fact that models are more than just images but we are here to set an example and send a message. There’s power behind an intelligent model.”

n case you missed it, this summer welcomed the very first Curvy Summer Scene in Galveston, Texas. Curvy Summer Scene, a whole weekend celebrating body positivity by the beach, joined amazing women and men from as far as Michigan and New York. Hosted by plus size fashion bloggers @SarahJaneReign and @VoluptuousLeah, the festivities kicked off with a stylish afternoon on the sand, showcasing some of the season’s cutest swimwear.

A
nd as you might expect from an event organized by two fashion bloggers, the attendees came through with some seriously chic beach ensembles. Take a look at some of our favorite trends that popped up at the beach that day.

Bring On The Belt Bags. Pictured: @chaze_d_plus_model
S
ome call them fanny packs. Some call them waist pouches. We call them hella cute. This iridescent style was as hot as the sun – and what a great way to store your phone, keys, etc. for an afternoon at the beach! Styled alongside this incredible mermaid-inspired bikini ‌ talk about a look that (mer)made our day.

reaking out jewelry for the beach is majorly in this year, and we especially love these layered necklaces and embellished anklets. It’s a can’t-fail way to instantly glamorize your seaside style. After all, a sun-kissed glow and sparkly accessories go together oh-so-beautifully!
25
Adorably Embroidered.

W
hile the embroidered look has been catching our attention on block heels, jackets and dresses for a while now, seeing it cross over into swim lends fresh flair to the trend! We love the way the floral embroidery on this piece adds a pop of color and extra detail to the illusion neckline.

Textured To Perfection.

he textured crochet panels and neckline on this two-piece add so much dimension, enhancing its classic monochromatic design. Crochet-accented swimwear has taken Instagram by storm the last two seasons – and we can see why! We’re forecasting that it will continue to be a popular choice for summers to come.

Let’s Get Into Ruffle.

R
uffles never fail to make a statement. We’ve been seeing them out in full force this season on one-pieces, bikinis, cover-ups and more. And, even better, vibrant floral iterations like this one can easily be paired with a sarong and mimosa for an instant beachside brunch outfit.

Round and Round.

ashion can take many forms. This summer, one of those forms is circular. Round sunglasses infuse any beach look with a hint of playfulness, coupled with darling retro vibes. Plus, the oversized design of these sunnies makes them bigger, better and even more luxe-looking.

hroughout the Curvy Summer Scene weekend, plenty of stories – from fun to deep – were shared among new and old friends. Another form of storytelling showcased throughout the weekend was via tattoo art. We loved seeing so many bopo babes proudly showing off their ink at the beach!

s cheesy as it might sound, our favorite style we saw rocked in Galveston that day was all the smiles! It was so exciting and meaningful to see a group of women from all around the country, many of whom were strangers, bonding over the journey to self-acceptance and loving yourself. Kicking back and enjoying the afternoon together was refreshing, and we really saw everyone’s beauty shine through!
31

O I
ne of the most amazing things about this weekend was how our happiness was infectious to those around us. Even the picture captured above on the banana boat was totally spontaneous – the banana boat owners saw us having fun on the beach and asked us if we wanted to give it a try (and, of course, we said YES!)
t’s just another great reminder that every body is a beach body. As we head into fall, I hope you choose to enjoy each moment and only surround yourself with people who make you feel great about yourself. At Curvy Summer Scene, we were certainly surrounded by good vibes, and it carried us through the entire weekend with nonstop confidence and memories to last a lifetime.

Denim is Trending
I
magine you’re in the year 2000, you see images of color pops, exotic and crazy mis-matched print outfits, and the big accessories. We agree with Anika Reed who suggested in USA Today Online May 2018 that the trend is shifting from the 90s into the 2000 era with the shift in styles with spaghetti straps, colorful lenses, tube tops, tracksuits (yes the one’s that go Swish, swish, bish), and what we all love, denim skirts! We are on board for the denim trend and it shows no signs of stopping. A favorite summer 2018 denim style was pairing this distressed denim vest find with a pair of short jean shorts and of course denim Vans! We are on board for the denim trend head to toe and love the available trends in not only clothing, but in shoe ware from heels to tennis shoes!
F
rom distressed denim jackets both long and crop style to denim pants, we are seeing an increase in denim at all levels. Lately denim styles have been gracing the runways in Europe and you many designers are getting on this trend and creating their own custom fashion with denim. Buyers can also be influenced not only by fashion trends, but also economic and political trends. With the increase in denim options available at all price points and even recycling of denim, denim can hit all spectrums at having affordable options. Recycled and repurposed denim can also serve as an ethical and political trend of efficiency and sustainability by using and repurposing items to “Go Green” as it is often called. The denim trend is here to stay both on the high end, low end, recycled end, and every other end in between. Although growth is not projected to 2020 to grow as substantially as it has in the past, growth is still there and if you set yourself apart enough, you may even can snag some of that target market in the jeans section! Susan Curry Susan has her Bachelor and Master’s degree in business management. She currently is studying for her Doctoral degree in business where she specializes in fashion trends, social media influencer strategies, small business development strategies, and how small businesses use social media for success.
SUSAN CURRY 35
COTWmagazine Contributer SUSAN CURRY Where are you from and where did you grow up. I am from Oklahoma City and in my youth I grew up on dirt and gravel roads between Cashion, OK and Clinton, OK helping on the farm with cattle, growing our own food, and living a simple life. How long have you been modeling? I modeled in 1996 for a short time when my modeling bag was stolen and coming from a poor family, no one wanted to replace, nor felt a need as this was an extra activity and I had to get an after school job to work so bills could get paid. I gave up modeling until the age of 34 when I auditioned for the LS1426 fashion show and the modeling career picked up once again. When you were younger is this something you thought you would be doing when u got older? This is something I dreamed of and growing up having my mom and grandmother as my designer, gave me plenty of practice for input through the years to make the fashion my own style. Do you have brothers or sisters and are u the oldest? Youngest? I am the oldest of 4 siblings. 2 brothers and 1 sister. Who are some big influences in your life? Education and the BOPO community have been some of the most impactful influences in my life. When I was stigmatized by society for being taller, larger, and just bigger than others, it can seem like a lonely journey. When I found that other women and men are going through the same things, this brought comfort in knowing that in my journey, I too can help others. Who would you like to sit down with today and have a conversation with? I would love to sit down with Garner Style, or Gabi Fresh, or even Glitterz and Lasers and find out more about what propels them to keep steadfast in their visions and pick their brains for advice and nuggets of wisdom.
36
SUSAN CURRY 37
For someone just starting out in modeling, what advice would u give them? Find your focus as in find your strengths and where you can use those within the modeling community. Find a few models\influencers that are doing things you want to be doing and see how they are working within the community. Start by building your portfolio through pictures, events, or other areas of modeling where you can get your foot in the door. You will get rejection, so prepare for that rejection and know that a NO now does not mean a NO tomorrow. What’s a pet peeve of yours in the plus modeling community? A pet peeve is modeling with no purpose. Always have a purpose for your photo shoots whether that is building portfolio, building skill level, creating artistic expressions, showcasing fashion, blogging, or even building with brands. Do you like the term plus size model or curvy model or just model? Personally I don’t mind either term, but with changing viewpoints of the plus\curvy community with that word use, I can see the term curvy becoming a term used more often. I don’t see the term plus size going anywhere anytime soon, but overall sticking with your own name as your brand is ideal. I do not use the term plus size or curvy with my name branding, it is simply Susan Curry. People who are not in the modeling community and u tell them you’re a plus size model, what are some of the reactions you get? I get reactions of what is that, or what do you do, or reactions of disbelief and excitement. Being a plus woman what are a few things u almost always deal with on a daily basis? Constant judging from society both in person and online that I need to lose weight because I am too big in this area or too big in that area. Even if I have not gained that much weight or am at the same weight others are always asking have I gained weight, or have I lost weight. I feel bad for ladies who are larger than me because I am treated as if I am a gigantic human being and the largest on the planet when I know that is far from the truth. I can only imagine what others are going through. It makes you not want to go out sometimes, not want to dress cute, and just be a recluse which in turn leads to other internal negative and depressive behaviors. Do u think the plus modeling world will ever be fully accepted in the main stream? I think the modeling world will become more diverse and accepting of multiple types of body types. We are already seeing more average size models utilized in ad, print, magazines, and commercials globally and this will only grow. Someone getting into modeling...how much can they expect to spend to be ready for photoshoots and runway? The strategy I took was to participate in events and photography where I would get trade work. With my prior model training and practice, I still had the basics engraved in my movements and I found a few photographers who were willing to help me grow in my purpose and began to work on my portfolio. My direction may take a bit longer and not all images were like the ones I take today. I was able to grow, learn, and create long lasting relationships with industry professionals. The other direction is to pay 38
upfront for a photographer who can also help you with posing as well as have a stylist, MUA, and hair so you will have a complete look. This can set you apart from others as well as having a purpose for what you are using the photos for. My motto is hit them hard and heavy! How tall are you? What are your three basic measurements BWH for designers that may see this? 5’11. Bust: 59. Waist: 48. Hips: 59 At the end of the day ...sort of speak. What do u want to take away from modeling? My goal with modeling is to bring fashion and beauty brands I believe in to my target market both online and through word of mouth. Through these partnerships I will bring my followers discounts and the latest trends, fashion, and beauty inspirations from around the world. I also want to help brands build their vision and bring their ideas to life for their brand and brand online development. Through modeling I am able to connect to potential clients and consumers through network marketing. 2019 I plan to attend more events, experience more, and just live life!

Is Your Computer Affecting Your Face?
A
re you one of the many that finds yourself sending a late text message or reaching for your phone upon waking? A survey revealed that most people spend more hours of the day on their laptop or phone than they sleep; about 8 hours and 41 minutes. Some of the activities included checking their e-mail or surfing the internet. Most smart phone users have their phones turned on all the time, even in bed. Computer usage at work alone for most people averages about 7 hours per day. Considering the combined daily use of smartphones and computers, that’s a lot of screen time. In this article we will focus on computer usage. Do you think being in a front of a computer for hours could have a negative impact on your skin? Computer usage can have a negative impact on the skin. There is a growing number of women that are developing computer face. Keep in mind, this can happen in both genders you and old. In particular, professionals who work long hours in front of a screen have a tendency to develop saggy jowls, ‘turkey neck’ and deep-set wrinkles on their forehead and around their eyes. The saggy jowls can develop when sitting in one position for long periods of time. That should make you want to get up and move, which is recommended anyway to avoid sitting for long periods of time. Looking down a lot may cause your neck muscles to shorten causing sagging that can lead to ‘turkey neck’. Frowning or squinting while concentrating on the screen can cause the development of frown lines. You may frown or squint without even noticing it, especially if you are concentrating really hard or stressed. Repeated squinting at the computer causes the skin around the eyes to get worn out. The skin around the eyes is much thinner and is very susceptible to wrinkling.
W
hen it comes to the thought of your computer being a source of aging skin, keep in mind that there are other things to consider such as what is emitting from your computer and how the environment that you are in effects the hydration of your skin when using the computer. There are several things that you can do to prevent computer face. One obvious way would be not to squint or frown at the screen. If you find yourself squinting, getting your eyes checked is a solution. Putting a mirror by your computer to check if you are frowning may help as well. Sitting at eye level with the computer screen will help to maintain a good posture. These are just some of the basic things that you can do to prevent the unwanted computer face. Prevention and being mindful of your habits at the computer are beneficial.

LAKESSHIA SLAUGHTER
Where are you from and where did you grow up I have lived in various cities across the U.S. in my lifetime. For the last 10 years I’ve been living in Gulfport, MS, but I was born and raised in Alexandria, LA. How long have you been modeling? I’ve been modeling for approximately 3 1/2 years. I’ve been involved in pageantry since college, so modeling was an easy transition for me. When you were younger is this something you thought you would be doing when u got older? When I was 5 years old, I remember watching my mother (a former model) getting dressed in pretty clothing and make-up - -just flawless. She never left home without looking absolutely her best. I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be just like her. In hindsight, I never realized that I would eventually follow in her steps and become a model myself.
44
Do you have brothers or sisters? I am the oldest of four beautiful girls and was the bane of my stepfather’s existence (bless his soul laughing). We gave him a run for his money. Who are some big influences in your life? The biggest influence of my life has been my mother. She instilled within me the passion for and value of hard work. She taught me to never be afraid to pursue what I desire and never take no for an answer. My boyfriend, Marcus Dearbone, has influenced me the most spiritually. He has reminded me of the importance of prayer and having God first in my life. He has helped me heal old wounds, to let go of doubts and insecurities, and find peace and balance. I’m so blessed to have him in my life. Who would you like to sit down with today and have a conversation with? Oprah Winfrey. Her lifetime journey to being one of the most influential people today is astounding. I would love the opportunity to pick her brain. For someone just starting out in modeling, what advice would u give them? Invest, invest, invest in yourself. As an aspiring model you must receive formal training to master your craft like any other career. Photoshoots, auditions, shoes, shapewear, and especially road trips to walk in fashion shows (normally on a volunteer basis). At least until you get the proper experience. A national brand isn't willing to invest in you if you aren’t willing to invest in yourself. What’s a pet peeve of you have in the plus modeling community? One pet peeve is shooting with an inexperienced photographer. As models we depend on our pictures as evidence of the “experience level” of our work. We will use them for submission to magazines, show producers, comp cards, etc. This is how we get paid and get the jobs to represent major mainstream brands. High-resolution pictures speak for us as professionals. If you’re submitting low res or mediocre cell phone pictures, it reflects negatively on you as a model and professional. Do you like the term plus-size model, curvy model or just model. Unlike some models the term “plus model” has never bothered me. In my opinion, it is just a category description, a descriptive term, so I’ll normally use them interchangeably. People who are not in the modeling community and u tell them you are a plus-size model, what are some of the reactions you get? Actually I get asked frequently by people if I am a model or if I have ever considered it. I’ve found that people are slowly accepting the fact that Plus Size Modeling is becoming a big thing now. Being a plus woman what are a few things u almost always deal with on a daily basis? I travel quite frequently across the U.S. and internationally by plane, car, bus, train- - you name it. I can say that plane rides are a little more difficult. I have a 53-inch hip circumference and thick thighs to match. When I sit in the seat, I fill my seat completely. I have to lift the arm rests to be comfortable. When I fasten the seatbelt, it’s extended to its maximum length. The narrow seat width accommodates smaller frames. It is advised that if you are a larger size person you should buy an additional seat. I just don’t feel that I
45
should pay double the ticket price for an additional 2 inches. So what I normally do is, I pre-select my seats a couple weeks before the flight so I can sit on the aisle. Yes, I still have to pay an additional charge but at least I know I will be comfortable. What are a few shows you have walked in? The top shows I have done recently: Pulp Fashion Week in Paris, France; Essence of Curves at Essence Festival in New Orleans, LA; National Curves Day, Washington, D.C.; and New York Fashion Week (6 seasons). In September 2018 I have been blessed to have the opportunity to walk in Atlantic City Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, the shows with FGNYFW (with Kizzed clothing line) Do u think the plus modeling world will ever be fully accepted in the main stream? Yes, I do. The plus size community is demanding inclusion and society is being forced to accept it. Amazingly the fashion industry is slowly responding to the call. The FGNYFW part of the NYFW the Shows has never had a plus size specialty designer participate in their show. I’m blessed and excited to be a part of this epic event. I would like to thank Chamere Payton, CEO of Kizzed Beauty and Fashion, for this amazing opportunity.

For someone just starting modeling, how much can they expect to spend to be ready for photoshoots and runway? If I had to give it a price it would be between $500 and $1500 for a photo shoot. You have to include fees for the MUA, hair stylist, wardrobe styling, photographer and photo edits, just to name a few. How tall are you? What are your three basic measurements -- BWH for designers that may see this? I am 5’9”. My weight tends to fluctuate 5-10 pounds from month to month because I love food. But my basic measurements are 45” bust, 42E bra size; 39” waist; and 53” hips. Designers love my hourglass shape because it’s easy to dress me and clothes always look great. At the end of the day ...so to speak, what do u want to take away from modeling? I initially entered the modeling game to prove to the world that beauty comes in all sizes, shapes and shades. But the self-confidence I’ve obtained from my journey is priceless.

ariah Carey continues to be a music euro and influence of sorts for the young Latin singer. Ironically if you listen to Lopez is lush vocals close enough one can hear shades of an early Mariah Carey. Aside from being a fantastic vocalists, CEO and entrepreneur, Jaime Lopez is also a budding songwriter pending personal lyrics in which the pop singer is not afraid to be brash, bold, sexy and daring. While working on her most recent single diva which she co-wrote, Jamie recounts how the song, was inspired after a horrible break up I went through with my cheating ex-boyfriend that put me in a very dark place for a while! I found my strength and remembered who I am! And I’m back better and stronger than ever! I found my strength and remembered who I am! And I’m back better and stronger than ever! It is what that kind of raw magnitude and perseverance to overcome the odds that Jamie approaches each obstacle in life. So where does Jamie see herself in five years? I see myself winning a Grammy opening multiple Babydoll beauty could tour salons and club baby dolls world ride!!! And changing the way the world sees beauty. With such a positive attitude, Jamie is more than likely to meet those goals and a whole lot more. One of the many reasons I opened my salon was due to a horrible experience I encountered going to a salon being discriminated against looked at and stared at laughed at and actually breaking a chair which made me never want to go back to salon again!! I thought to myself I know I’m not the only big woman who goes through this and I wanted to do something about it so save all my money sacrifice years putting up with a horrible negative working environment and I finally I saved enough money to make my dreams come true!! Super excited to have opened Club Babydoll the only plus lies nightclub in Las Vegas!! Let’s Talk Frank
ince 2000 approximately 450 kids have died because of a school shooting. As a 45-yearold woman this baffles my mind. In my days of school there was no such thing, now as a parent I am plagued with the thoughts of will my child make it home today. What has happened to our world that we can't even send our children to school and not worry about their safety? We not only need answers, but we need solutions and we need them immediately. Time is wasting away, and more children are being killed and injured at school typically by a fellow classmate. How many more of our children must lose their life before we solve this problem? I firmly believe that bullying is the main root to the problem of school shootings. We
must not be afraid to say some harsh truths. The first truth is that kids can be mean and heartless and that doesn't come from just anywhere, but I won't address that problem as of yet. Just how bullying directly affects school shootings. The main part of bullying is how isolated it can make one feel. Already having a complex about yourself and having crazy hormones racing through your body fuels the feelings of confusion of and self-loathing and to have that exacerbated and pointed out for all to see can be the beginning of a bomb. Also throw in there the possible bad things going on outside of school. Pushed and taunted day after day the isolation grows, and they just want it to stop. Before too long a person who is normally not violent starts fantasizing about how things would be if their antagonizer would disappear. So, what do we do with these bullies? How do we get people to understand how powerful words are? What is to be done? We all know the whys but what are we going to do to put a stop to this? One important
thing we need to do is raise our children to be bully free and accepting of all people. Have a no tolerance policy with your children. Don't allow them to bully anything in their lives. No bullying of siblings, no bullying of pets or their friends. Show them love and let that be the root of your teachings. Most importantly we as parents must lead by example. I have always taught my children to be the one who stands up for those that sometimes can't do it for themselves. Don't be part of a group that is focused on tearing down another person. Bullying isn't part of our DNA. It is a learned behavior that is like a cancer and it can grow and spread and even KILL! So, whether you are a parent, a aunt or uncle, a grandparent or close family friend raise these children with love and compassion and teach them that we all belong. 61
Solutions is what is needed. I have spent many hours just thinking on this subject and
what can be done to start reversing this terrible trend. Some schools have begun putting metal detectors at the entrance ways of the school. Although I am opposed to this idea I understand the thought. On one occasion I was picking my daughter up early from school and I was hurt when I thought of the difference oh high school for her and high school for me. High school is now like a prison. There are armed police officers walking the campus and now they are adding metal detectors. Is this really a good answer to lock our children up and treat them as if they have done something wrong? The environment didn't feel conducive to learning and growing. I have had the unpleasant pleasure of visiting someone in prison and every time I go to my daughter's school I have the same feeling of gloom and unhappiness. I have come up with what I think is something that can help. Since technology has become what it is our children are missing some major social skills that are important. So, my thought was what if we taught them how to talk to one another and to befriend people they ordinarily wouldn't be exposed to? My idea is simple. It doesn't really cost too much and wouldn't bankrupt any school. The beginning of every day would start with a class called " Friendship" this class would be an hour long. Games would be played in these classes. All-inclusive games that absolutely includes everyone. Every Monday would be shift day where everyone would be mixed up and with new people. That would be introduction day. Everyone would have to participate and eventually they would get used to it. Then on Tuesday the games would start. Not a bunch of touchy feely games but games they are used to like Jenga tournament or a trivia something to get them interacting with each other. There would be circle day one day a week where a teacher or a trained professional would help the students to have a open talk about whatever they want. So, you ask what is the purpose of all this?? My theory is no will ever feel alone. For those situations when bullying does happen instead of being alone they will have someone in the crowd whom they have previously linked up with that can possibly intervene. If you know someone on a more personal level its harder to blatantly be rude to them. My theory may be wrong, but I think we should try everything when our children's lives are at stake. Let's be frank our children are dying way before their time. What are you willing to do to
save them? Are you willing to stand up against bullying? We need to start going to our school board meetings and demand change and not only demand change but offer good suggestions. So, before we continue to turn our schools into prisons let’s throw love and light into the situation and change for the better.

Summer 2018 Swimsuit Trends
T 2 O
his summer swimsuit style has been one to showcase edgy two piece styles and phenomenal monokini and one piece style swimsuits. This summer was witness to strappy designs, mesh cutouts, grommet styles, and a few basic swimwear styles. With an increase in body positive swim meet ups, events, and the availability of plus size 2 piece options, we are confident these styles are here to stay. As more women become comfortable with their body and swimsuit options continue to increase there will be more varieties of swimwear offered in a variety of fabrics and designs.
piece style swimsuits range from traditional plain bra and panty styles while some options get edgier with more detail or cutouts. One may opt for a high waist style or for the traditional lower cut style. Furthermore, options such as high cut on the hip provide a different option other than the traditional brief style swimsuit cut. Some may prefer the extra high cut, but for the ones who don’t want to show as much upper thigh area the other options are plentiful.
ne piece style swimsuits are becoming sexier, edgier, and many are combining a monokini style with mid-section cutouts or strappy designs. Monokini styles are definitely making a comeback as the sex appeal of swimsuits continues to rise. ARTTwear designed a swimsuit featuring side grommets and ties on each side providing a peek of skin on each side of the swimsuit, but still fully covered.

TACOREY WILLIAMS Where are you from and where did you grow up? Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona How long have you been modeling? 2 Years When you were younger is this something you thought you would be doing when you got older? Similar, when I was younger I wanted to be an actress or a TV news anchor. Do you have brothers or sisters? Yes! There are 7 of us. I am the middle child. Who are some big influences in your life? My 2 older sisters Thomesia and Antoinette? Also, my good friend Romekia Brown. Who would you like to sit down with today and have a conversation with? First person that pops in my head is Oprah! She’s amazing, wise, spiritual, and a woman of color. For someone just starting out in modeling, what advice would you give them? I will let them know it’s not easy and you have to really want it. Do as much research as possible about becoming/being a model. Modeling is art and you have to keep an open, positive and creative mind at all times. BE YOU ... with a lil twist. Self Confidence is what keeps you going. Knowing you’ve got this... even if you don’t have a tight grip. Believe in and push yourself to be great and set your own path.

What is a pet peeve of yours in the plus modeling community? In the modeling community my pet peeve is that a lot of plus women that wear a size 20+ don’t get accepted on a lot of main stream plus modeling gigs sizes 9 to 16 always get accepted first. Do you like the term plus size model or curvy model or just model? I do! It’s descriptive, I’m not a fit model or a petite model. I am plus size so I’m proud to call myself a plus model, curvy model or even full figured model, when it’s all said and done I’m still a model.
People who are not in the modeling community and you tell them you’re a plus size model, what are some of the reactions you get? I have received numerous reactions and I’m honored to say they all have been great. My favorite is “Really? “said with slight disbelief. So then I’ll show pictures and then they are blown away by the beauty. Some will say “Oh, I believe you.” Being a plus woman, what are a few things you almost always deal with on a daily basis? Sweat in awkward places. On a more positive note, I communicate regularly with other curvy ladies.

What are a few shows you have walked in? Thickumms, "Thick and Sip" African Festival "Africa meets Arizona" and I will be in the upcoming TIOS fashion show. Do you think the plus modeling world will ever be fully accepted as main stream? That’s a tough one because we are slowly appearing in TV, movies and magazines. However, health is very important too. Even though my physical came back and I am as healthy as I can be, I still believe being overweight may be viewed as unhealthy and that may be the main concern. Someone getting into modeling...how much can they expect to spend to be ready for photoshoots and runway? Clothes, accessories, mua and hairstylist are what you will be spending money on mainly in the the beginning and that all varies on what you like. For photoshoots search for trade shoots in your area and also ask around for runway opportunities What are your three basic measurements BWH for designers that may see this ? Bust 45, Waist 38, Hips 54
At the end of the day sort of speak..what do u want to take away from modeling? A more confident me! I want to take away that I, Tacorey Williams can do whatever I put my mind to and be good and successful at it.

CAMAY McCLURE Society “Pressures Of The Woman” I recently bought the movie, “Whitney: Can I Be Me” through the Amazon platform. I have been a Whitney fan since I was a teenager, living in Boise, ID and intently involved in 4-H with my horse. A huge Whitney Houston poster hung on one wall in my tiny little bedroom and a huge Michael Jackson poster on another. I thought these two iconic musical superstars were two of the most beautiful people I had ever seen in my life. My mother’s husband, a racist, attempted to take down my two favorite posters, during a heated argument and physical altercation with my mother over keeping the posters on my walls. George Michael was a pop superstar who’s “Faith” album cover poster was added to my collection, which I think made my mother’s husband feel a little more comfortable seeing another “white man” in the house.

bout five years later, I was dating a man who was from Dallas. He was stationed at Mountain Home, Idaho in the Airforce and our relationship took me to Dallas after I graduated from beauty school. I fell in love with the big city, big hair, fur coats and the glamour of the majestic city. I was elated when my man surprised me with Whitney Houston concert tickets. I couldn’t believe I was actually going to see one of my most favorite entertainers of my life in person. It was unforgettable! he popular group “After 7” opened up for Whitney and the anticipation was intense. I was an R&B and Old School music lover and stood speechless outside of the concert venue awaiting this beautiful pop singer to strut her fabulousness on stage. There were so many rumors going around in the media about who Whitney was dating. There was some speculation about Whitney being a lesbian, which is a topic that was touched on in her movie; however, Whitney made her personal romantic life crystal clear while she was on stage that night. he had just finished performing one of her songs as the fans began to quiet down, saving their screams and cheers for the next song she would perform when Whitney began to talk to us. She mentioned the fact that there was a lot of gossip going around about whom she was dating and questions about her sexuality, when she said, “Whoever I’m dating is…… MY PREROGATIVE!!!” The fans screamed in excitement as we all realized Whitney just told us she was dating the “Original Bad Boy, Bobby Brown!!!!”

he concert was the first music concert I went to. I will never forget it for that reason alone, not to mention, I was one of the first fans to find out who she was dating and she told me herself!!! I also will never forget how I looked at her that night. I thought she was one of the most beautiful, confident women in music. She was not much older than I was and she painted a picture in my mind that very day about what I could become. You see, I am of Italian and Hawaiian heritage. My skin carries a dark olive complexion. My hair was long locks of curly dreads and my attraction to men of color was a burning fire in my spirit. For the first time in my adolescent life, I saw a real life woman who was famous, singing her heart out in a world full of pop stars that looked nothing like her. I saw her courage, her tenacity, her sassiness and her ability to stand out in a world that criticized who women were and how they looked.

oday, I am a testimony of my own journey and understand the resilience it takes to stand on a stage presenting yourself to the world willing to address any comment or judgment made against you. I have competed in plus-size pageantry and been scrutinized for it. I have heard comments about my body and my size and have addressed questions about my plus-size pageant competition. This article isn’t about me so I don’t want to spend too much time on my life. What I want to focus on is the Whitney movie and the facts and details of her life as it was revealed from Whitney’s closest friends and family. was in disbelief to hear from people in the documentary who shared life with Whitney as they experienced it. The movie included content from her mother and father, hair and make-up staff, even Katie Couric’s interview with her where Whitney admitted her struggle with drug addiction. Drug addiction that included tragic heartbreak from her father suing her and Bobby brown cheating on her and leaving her for another woman. What stood out to me the most was when close family and friends talked about how insecure Whitney was and how concerned she was about what other people thought of her physical appearance. ou see, we live in a surface world, one full of judgment and condemnation. Our country has portrayed what a perfect person should look like, how they should act and what they should say and if we fall outside of that box society has built around us, we suddenly “don’t fit.” Women especially are held to this unrealistic standard of what beauty is supposed to look like and what size women should be in order for society to “accept” us. Women have been forced into suppression for decades by the world in which we revolve in and the career we chose, and as apparent as it may be, those of us who chose the spotlight to share our God-given gift with the world are the ones who get “boo’ed” the worst. You can watch the clip of the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards here where Whitney was boo’ed and when you watch the documentary, you will hear from people who explain their theory of why that was.
A
t the time of Whitney’s death in February 2012, I was preparing to compete in the first ever Washington Plus America pageant. I was shocked to hear that she died from an accidental drowning due to cocaine use. That wasn’t the image I saw when I looked at her, however, I stand here six years later after watching this documentary and have a sense of understanding about “why.” The title of the movie really says it all. Whitney Houston was forced to present herself to be somebody society would like and accept. She was paid to perform songs that fit better into a white world, not to mention, the pressure placed on her by her closest friends and family members. When she found herself alone having to manage her emotions and her internal battles, she stood alone having to face herself, which is no easy task.
W
hat do us, as women do if we find ourselves in this same predicament? Do we continue to live as others prefer us living, or do we decide to live as we want to? Do we force ourselves into an unrealistic mold that society says we should be in, or do we travel to the top of the mountain and standalone representing the goddess we were created to be? I have never fit into society’s square box and I encourage every woman who reads this article to refuse the same. We are who we are. We come from where we come from. Be courageous and confident enough to show the world just how individually beautiful you are!!! 92
SABAS WHITTAKER Where are you from and where did you grow up? I was originally born on a small island off the coast of St. Thomas located in the Virgin Islands. I grew up in Miami where the weather is always AMAZING! How long have you been modeling? I am new to the whole modeling thing, my first modeling experience was in August of this year, so I am pretty new to this. This is something I definitely have a passion for though. When you were younger is this something you thought you would be doing when you got older? I never thought I would be doing this, but ever since the age of 6 I have had a passion for fashion. I remember when I was growing up, at the age of 12 my mom taking us to the thrift store to buy clothes because we never had a lot of money. I made a vow to myself that once I was able to purchase my own clothes that I would never have to want for anything, particularly clothes. Do you have brothers or sisters are you the oldest? Youngest? I am the youngest of 6, I have both, two brothers and three sisters. Who are some big influences in your life? My three biggest influences are my mother, my father and my son. My mother is visually impaired but never let that stop her from doing what she needed to do for her family. She is from St. Martin which is a poor country, but she brought my family here when I was only 1 and was able to make a life for us. My father is from a third world country called Honduras. He was very poor and did not have much. He came to the U.S. in search of a better life and did just that. My son is 7 years old, he is a very healthy, intelligent, and fearless young man. Looking into his eyes on the day he was born, I knew I had to become a man. When he was born, I can admit I was not the best person in the world but because of him, I opened my eyes up to different and better things. I was not ready for a child at the time nor was I making enough money to provide for one. He brought out the confidence and motivation within myself to do what I had to do to provide for him. 93
Who would you like to sit down with today and have a conversation with? They say you should never question God, but I would sit down with God and have a heart to heart. I know they say most things happen for a reason and I would really like to know what some of those reasons are.
94
For someone just starting out to be a male, what advice would you them? I would tell them keep your head up, keep grinding, keep fresh content, take lots of pictures, be humble stay hungry and never let them see you sweat. Lastly, I would tell them it is important to respect everyone: male, female, transgender, gay, or lesbian no matter their job title or occupation. Respect goes a long way. What are a few shows you have walked in? Everyone thinks I have been doing this for years, so it comes as a shock when I tell people that I have only walked in one show. How tall are you? What are your three basic measurements BWH for designers that may see this? My height is 6'2 Weight: 310 Bicep: 20 Inseam: 32 Shirt Size: 2x Pant Size: 44 Shoe Size: 13 Neck Size: 19 At the end of the day...sort of speak...what do you want to take away from modeling? In all honesty I don't want to take away, I want to give back to the modeling community. I want big and tall men to have a voice. I want them to understand just because you may be big, that does not mean you cannot wear what you want to wear. Fashion is a statement, you are never too big to wear anything you want. It is important to love who you are and love the skin you are in. You have to forget what anybody thinks about you and create your own wave with confidence!
