Be Well It’s never been more challenging for women to stay well. We have more pressures on us than women of previous generations, and the precious work-life balance we strive for proves ever more elusive. With time constraints, work goals and family commitments, women often put their own health—physical, mental, social, financial and spiritual—at the bottom of their to-do lists. Thankfully, we live in a community rich with women who can help us achieve health in all these realms. When our responsibilities in work and life feel overwhelming, we must learn to delegate, and in the 2018 Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory, we are proud to introduce you to highly qualified, talented professional women who can lessen your stresses with their expertise. You’ll discover counselors and chiropractors, financial planners and networking groups, bankers, yoga teachers and designers, all with the shared goal of strengthening our community and the women in it. This commitment to community and wellness is one increasingly embodied by businesses in the area, as you’ll discover in “Healthy Employees, Healthy Businesses” on p. 6, which takes a look at just a sampling of on-site employee wellness programs offered by area businesses. And if your to-do list doesn’t look like our “Women’s Wellness Guide” on p. 15, well, maybe it should. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.crwmagazine.com. Coulee Region Women is dedicated to community connections and healthy living, and we are honored to serve you as you build yours.

Healthy Employees, Healthy Businesses Wellness programs pay dividends for local companies and their employees. By martha Keefe

It goes without saying that a happy employee is a productive employee. Recognizing this dynamic, many area businesses allow employees to work from home and offer benefits such as flexible work schedules and onsite enrichment programs as ways to increase employee satisfaction. In short, employers want workers who are engaged in their jobs, and employees want to know that they are valued and cared for. “We want our employees to be healthy and energetic,” says Joyce Mlsna, Health Promotion Coordinator at Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, who advocates for a whole life strategy to employee well-being. “If we can equip our employees with the tools to they need to take care of themselves, the better they can take care of the needs in the workplace.” Keeping it positive

“I think the biggest benefit that we have seen so far in providing an employee wellness program is a positive workplace culture,” says Abbie Loos, Nutrition Educator with the La Crosse County Health Department. By offering on-site noon hour fitness classes, meeting the needs of employees where they work and promoting fun fitness challenges, the county gives employees 6

more opportunities to come together, lend support to fellow participants and build relationships with people they may not otherwise encounter during the day. “Our employee wellness programs help to build camaraderie and team building,” adds Loos. “We did a ‘Planksgiving’ challenge last year, and I witnessed many employees out in the hallways doing the plank challenge together.”

Fit at work

Not only does Sarah Haven, director of Gundersen Health System’s Community and Preventive Care Services, agree that wellness programs boost employee morale, she notes that they lead to healthier behaviors like smoking cessation, increased physical activity, maintaining healthy weight and an improved ability to cope with stress, resulting in reduced health care costs. At Gundersen, employees have access to health forums and fairs covering a wide range of health-related topics and can arrange for a personal health assessment (PHA). “A healthier employee has reduced unexpected absences and higher productivity during the workday,” says Haven, adding that building a culture of

health in a company warrants the resources invested, especially when there is visible support from leadership.

Covering all the bases

As businesses continue to appreciate the benefits of on-site employee wellness programs, more are looking to extend those benefits to their workforce on offcampus sites and remote locations. Virtual online fitness programs—which deliver ondemand classes on a wide range of topics from increasing cardio activity to talks on how to read a hospital bill—have increased engagement due to their flexibility and cost effectiveness. “Employees can watch and participate in the classes when they have the time,” says Mlsna, stating that participation in the virtual fitness programs offered by Mayo Clinic Health System has increased from an attendance of approximately 25 per brown bag session to over 400 or more in a month. “And they can include their families in the effort.” crw

NANCY MCHUGH

President/Owner

TITLE INSURANCE

Nancy McHugh, president and owner of Town n’ Country Title, LLC (TNCT), opened her company’s first office in Holmen in 2007 with two primary goals: to exceed customers’ expectations and to always appreciate their business. TNCT has grown to nine locations throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota by providing closing/ settlement, title insurance and construction disbursement services. In the La Crosse area, TNCT is the only independently owned, nonaffiliated title insurance agency available to consumers and is the largest woman-owned title insurance agency in the state of Wisconsin. Nancy earned the designation of Wisconsin Title Professional (WTP) and is currently working to earn the national designation from the American Land Title Association, where she is also a National Homebuyer Outreach Program (HOP) Leader. Nancy enjoys serving the needs of her community and those less fortunate, both locally and internationally, by her dedication to service through Rotary with her husband, Dean, both active members of the Holmen Area Rotary Club.

ine On lHealthcare Leadership & Administration What I enjoyed most about the HLA program was that I was able to apply so much of the coursework to my job each day. I felt as though I was not only exceling as a student, but I was also becoming a better employee. I have advanced my career since receiving my BAS, in a position I would not be in if I hadn’t obtained my degree.

Bachelor Degree completion in 2 – 3 yrs.
