Tech Solutions for Small Businesses A few key programs add up to smooth business operations. By Jessie Foss

Owning and operating your own small business may seem

daunting, but with a few programs and a little tech savviness, you can be on your way to efficiently operating your business. Sam Bachmeier of the La Crosse Area Development Corporation says the progression of technology makes it nearly impossible for anyone to keep up, but it is crucial business owners continue to use technology as it develops. “Knowing which applications best suit your company’s needs will give you that extra advantage over your competitors,” Bachmeier says. The following programs act as a starting place for small-business operations:

QuickBooks

With QuickBooks, you don’t need to be an accounting expert to effectively track and understand your business’s finances. The program links to your bank account and credit cards, making it easier to track expenses and income. Additional options include adding payroll, accepting payments and paying invoices.

Google Analytics

Using analytics—or the discovery, interpretation and communication of meaningful patterns in data—may sound like a brain-overloading task. But it’s an important task if you want to understand your customers and their needs. Google Analytics can ease the brain overload by uncovering insights on how your business is performing. Analytics can help you understand how customers—or potential customers—use your websites and apps so you can improve their experience.

Microsoft OneDrive

Bachmeier likes this tool because it allows users to access work wherever they are. It autosaves so you don’t have to worry about lost work. It also allows you to work on Microsoft applications

Basecamp

“Basecamp is amazing,” Bachmeier says, because it alleviates and maybe even eliminates “crazy email strings between many people who are trying to coordinate times.” Basecamp allows all involved in projects to post updates, schedule meetings, assign jobs/roles and check on projects and their status.

GoodHire

GoodHire is employment screening that’s built on trust, safety and fairness. The company prides itself on speed and accuracy built into mobile and web software. GoodHire offers a wide range of background check services including identity checks, criminal records searches, education and employer verifications, motor vehicle records checks and drug screening.

Wix

This website builder offers hundreds of templates, including industry-specific templates along with customization tools. Websites built with Wix are also mobile optimized. Wix also offers a 24/7 support team and help buttons throughout its template builder, which open to related articles.

Social Media

Bachmeier can’t stress enough the importance of businesses, especially small ones, having a social media presence. From childhood, Karen learned the value of volunteering. As an adult, she was strongly influenced by her time with the American Red Cross and Rotary. During the Viet Nam War she worked and volunteered for the Red Cross at Army bases in the U.S., Germany, and in the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. Since then, she has encouraged students’ leadership skills as well as efforts to alleviate poverty; the reduction of suffering and displacement of animals; care of senior citizens, Alzheimer’s victims, and victims of human trafficking; and opportunities for entrepreneurs. She is also concerned with mental illness and AODA awareness. Karen has served on the Vernon County Board of Supervisors, is presently the president of The Flame of Hope Foundation, and has been host of “Hello Neighbor” on WVRQ since 1973.

Marilyn’s compassion, dedication and integrity led her through an eclectic career including jobs as religious education director, women’s resource center director, educator, and antique dealer, plus various volunteer projects. Marilyn has been a member of AAUW since 1973, and a leader within AAUW La Crosse since 1990. She has been an active participant in the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the League of Women Voters and AMOS initiatives, as well as hospice work. She is gratified when she sees people grow, overcome addictions, and change their lives. Jessica works on several committees to improve criminal justice in La Crosse County, with the goal of reducing racial and gender bias in the system while also improving safety for the community-atlarge.

Theresa is a tireless advocate for the importance of the arts for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. With over 25 years as owner of her own photography studio, Theresa has helped many businesses and non-profits with images for their physical space and marketing materials. A nationally award-winning and published photographer, she provides unwavering support and inspiration to young people, encouraging them to discover their unique talents and challenging them to follow their dreams. As a passionate mentor and team member on local committees, crews and boards, she helps others blossom and find their strength to become leaders.

Terri recently retired from 33 years at the School District of La Crosse where she was a relationship builder, advocate, mentor, confidant, and outstanding educator. Kemesha Harper, Western Technical College

Kemesha’s personal life experiences, challenges and inner drive to succeed have led her to become the successful, passionate and compassionate leader she is today. A 2018 honors graduate of Western Technical College, Kemesha credits much of her success to the college’s Project PROVEN as well as other supportive community systems. She has lobbied lawmakers and addressed various groups on funding reform for educational programs that serve individuals that have experienced addiction, poverty, or incarceration. As a full-time student, employee, and mother, Kemesha still finds ways to advocate for others, give back to her community, and maintain a sense of humor.

Aurora Waite, Logan High School

Aurora, a senior, is a leader in many clubs and a role model for underclassmen and student athletes. Her kindness, integrity, attitude, and infectious smile make her an asset both inside and outside school. Besides participating in three sports and a holding a part-time job, Aurora plays an integral role in many student groups including Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Rotary Interact, and National Honor Society. Last winter, she was selected as Logan’s “Rockin’ Royal Ranger” based on her leadership skills and school spirit, and she leads the student body during sporting events and assemblies. In addition, Aurora is a peer tutor and a member of Student Council and Pep Club.

Linda’s ability to cultivate relationships, get to the root causes of issues, and formulate effective ways to promote diversity and preserve Hmong tradition, history and culture are evident in the work she has done with the Hmong Organization Promoting Education (H.O.P.E.), Hmong United for Justice, Hmoob Cultural and Community Agency and Cia Siab, Inc.

Yining Zhou, Onalaska High School

Yining, a senior, cares deeply about the environment. She volunteers with Citizens’ Climate Lobby, meeting with legislators and writing about environmental issues, and she founded a student organization focused on improving sustainability. Yining volunteers weekly at WAFER Food Pantry and is president of the OHS National Honor Society. She has taught English to children in China and used her pottery skills in local efforts to fight hunger. She strives to use her NHS leadership role to discover volunteer opportunities that are equally as personally meaningful and impactful for her fellow students. Her other pastimes include making ceramics, playing piano, and participating in academic competitions.
