Tools for Success Women business owners know that an important key to success is having the right tools. These tools come in many forms: They may be specialized skills, effective communication skills, capital, information and the right equipment to do your job. But other tools go beyond the skills and physical resources an entrepreneur possesses. They include the company a businesswoman keeps: her colleagues, her connections in the community, the numerous supportive groups that exist in our area and even her friends. In the 2019 Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory, we seek to set you up with just the tools you need for success. Here, we’ll introduce you to 20 other businesswomen who provide important services, products and community connections. We offer an entire section of nonprofit resources that can help you and your employees succeed. We introduce you to women’s business groups and invite you into a web of community of businesswomen who can support, complement and inspire your business goals. In this issue, we’ll also teach you how to use popular tech tools to your advantage, helping you market, organize and grow your business. “Tech Tools for Small Businesses” on p. 6 introduces you to a number of online tools to do just that, and “10 Social Media Tools to Boost Your Business” on p. 15 helps you navigate the often overwhelming realm of social media, selecting the tools that will best help your business grow. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.crwmagazine.com. At Coulee Region Women, we’re happy to assist you in finding the right tools to build your business and your community connections.

Tech Solutions for Small Businesses A few key programs add up to smooth business operations. By Jessie Foss

Owning and operating your own small business may seem

daunting, but with a few programs and a little tech savviness, you can be on your way to efficiently operating your business. Sam Bachmeier of the La Crosse Area Development Corporation says the progression of technology makes it nearly impossible for anyone to keep up, but it is crucial business owners continue to use technology as it develops. “Knowing which applications best suit your company’s needs will give you that extra advantage over your competitors,” Bachmeier says. The following programs act as a starting place for small-business operations:

QuickBooks

With QuickBooks, you don’t need to be an accounting expert to effectively track and understand your business’s finances. The program links to your bank account and credit cards, making it easier to track expenses and income. Additional options include adding payroll, accepting payments and paying invoices.

Google Analytics

Using analytics—or the discovery, interpretation and communication of meaningful patterns in data—may sound like a brain-overloading task. But it’s an important task if you want to understand your customers and their needs. Google Analytics can ease the brain overload by uncovering insights on how your business is performing. Analytics can help you understand how customers—or potential customers—use your websites and apps so you can improve their experience.

Microsoft OneDrive

Bachmeier likes this tool because it allows users to access work wherever they are. It autosaves so you don’t have to worry about lost work. It also allows you to work on Microsoft applications

6

2019

online, so you don’t have to access individual offline Microsoft apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Basecamp

“Basecamp is amazing,” Bachmeier says, because it alleviates and maybe even eliminates “crazy email strings between many people who are trying to coordinate times.” Basecamp allows all involved in projects to post updates, schedule meetings, assign jobs/roles and check on projects and their status.

GoodHire

GoodHire is employment screening that’s built on trust, safety and fairness. The company prides itself on speed and accuracy built into mobile and web software. GoodHire offers a wide range of background check services including identity checks, criminal records searches, education and employer verifications, motor vehicle records checks and drug screening.

Wix

This website builder offers hundreds of templates, including industry-specific templates along with customization tools. Websites built with Wix are also mobile optimized. Wix also offers a 24/7 support team and help buttons throughout its template builder, which open to related articles.

Social Media

Bachmeier can’t stress enough the importance of businesses, especially small ones, having a social media presence. While it is important to advertise your products on social media, Bachmeier says, this isn’t the only reason to use social media. “Businesses can use social media to give company updates, gain knowledge through polls/surveys, advertise events and advertise for job openings.” For more information on social media tools, see p. 15. crw Jessie Foss is a La Crosse-based freelance writer.

Johns, Flaherty & Collins, SC Heidi M. Eglash Attorney and Shareholder LEGAL

Approximately half of all Americans have no disability or estate plans in place. Having practiced estate planning, elder and supplemental needs care, and probate and trust administration law for more than 20 years, attorney Heidi M. Eglash of Johns, Flaherty & Collins has seen the consequences of waiting until it’s too late. “Whether you’re wealthy or of modest means, planning establishes your personal safety net and ensures proper care for you, your loved ones and all that you’ve worked for. It also increases the chances that your resources will be used wisely and minimizes burdens and confusion for your loved ones.” To get started, Eglash recommends a consultation to review your circumstances, goals and assets and to discuss ways to establish a comprehensive plan in keeping with your priorities. “Those who choose to plan immediately gain peace of mind,” says Eglash, “plus all the future benefits. This legacy of good stewardship and thoughtfulness is something you and all your loved ones can enjoy.”

10 Social Media Tools to Boost Your Business By Paige Forde

Take your marketing Utilizing social media platforms can be a flexible, affordable way to kick-start any business and build brand loyalty. If you’re looking for new and innovative ways to boost your to the next level with online presence and connect with your customers, look no further. Here are some free and easy tools to help your business reach its full online potential. these easy and effective online tools. Planning

When it comes to social media, planning ahead is key. One tip is to create a content calendar. This will allow you to create a “big picture” of your posts throughout the month. This also comes in handy for balancing out content so it doesn’t become too repetitive, as well as spacing out recycled posts across your platforms. When creating a content calendar, you’ll find hundreds of templates online to help get you started. Another helpful tool is Buffer, an easy-to-use social media scheduler. Once you discover the optimal days and times to post on each platform, you can write out each post directly into Buffer, and it will automatically post from your account at the specified time. This is especially helpful during busy weeks when you can’t find the time to post on a daily basis.

Photos

Eye-catching photos are a fantastic way to cause your followers to hit “pause” while scrolling through their social media feed. Look to free photo websites such as Pixabay and Reshot. Both operate with a Creative Commons (CC) license, so they are available to the public to use and share. Canva is a photo-based tool that allows for adjustments and resizing based on the particular platform, which can be extremely beneficial. It also allows for editing in quotes, creating collages and building dozens of inspiring designs.

Trends

To keep your posts up-to-date and relevant, Feedly comes to your rescue. Based on your particular industry, this app filters out top stories and trends that can serve as post content ideas for your business. Similarly, Google Alerts focuses on immediately informing you of important changes in the news that you express interest in, which can also aid in content creation. Social Mention is a social media search engine that shows all user-generated mentions of a particular brand to help you see what customers are posting about your business.

Tracking

To gather the tangible outcomes of your social media marketing efforts, likes and comments are only the tip of the iceberg. Google Analytics is a common tool that uses a tracking code to observe traffic rates on a particular platform. It also offers free online classes and tutorials on how to get started. To track individual link analytics, Bitly is a simple tool to look into. It is also used to shorten lengthy links in your posts. crw Paige Forde is a La Crosse-based freelance writer.

Tribute to Outstanding Women For 35 years, YWCA La Crosse has proudly recognized area women for the breadth and depth of their impact on our community and the world. Inspired by each woman’s complexity and wide-ranging influence, we move forward without the limitation of named categories. Karen Dahl

From childhood, Karen learned the value of volunteering. As an adult, she was strongly influenced by her time with the American Red Cross and Rotary. During the Viet Nam War she worked and volunteered for the Red Cross at Army bases in the U.S., Germany, and in the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas. Since then, she has encouraged students’ leadership skills as well as efforts to alleviate poverty; the reduction of suffering and displacement of animals; care of senior citizens, Alzheimer’s victims, and victims of human trafficking; and opportunities for entrepreneurs. She is also concerned with mental illness and AODA awareness. Karen has served on the Vernon County Board of Supervisors, is presently the president of The Flame of Hope Foundation, and has been host of “Hello Neighbor” on WVRQ since 1973.

Marilyn Hempstead

Marilyn’s compassion, dedication and integrity led her through an eclectic career including jobs as religious education director, women’s resource center director, educator, and antique dealer, plus various volunteer projects. Marilyn has been a member of AAUW since 1973, and a leader within AAUW La Crosse since 1990. She has been an active participant in the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the League of Women Voters and AMOS initiatives, as well as hospice work. As an affiliate of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Marilyn gives tours of the Maria Angelorum Chapel, participates in the Homelessness Initiative Committee, and volunteers at the Franciscan Hospitality House.

In leading the Global Initiatives Week Planning Community, Miranda has helped coordinate this annual celebration of the Coulee Region’s global connections. GI Week encourages individuals and organizations to become a community with a deep sense of global responsibility and engagement.

Jessica Skemp

Jessica’s love for social justice was instilled in her by family and strong female role models, including her mother, stepmother, and grandmothers. A prosecutor in the La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office for almost 23 years and the Deputy District Attorney since 2016, Jessica loves her career because it allows her to help and protect the rights of others. She is gratified when she sees people grow, overcome addictions, and change their lives. Jessica works on several committees to improve criminal justice in La Crosse County, with the goal of reducing racial and gender bias in the system while also improving safety for the community-atlarge.

Theresa Smerud

Theresa is a tireless advocate for the importance of the arts for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. With over 25 years as owner of her own photography studio, Theresa has helped many businesses and non-profits with images for their physical space and marketing materials. A nationally award-winning and published photographer, she provides unwavering support and inspiration to young people, encouraging them to discover their unique talents and challenging them to follow their dreams. As a passionate mentor and team member on local committees, crews and boards, she helps others blossom and find their strength to become leaders.

Terri Taylor Johnson

Terri recently retired from 33 years at the School District of La Crosse where she was a relationship builder, advocate, mentor, confidant, and outstanding educator. Her classroom was not only a learning space, but a safe haven for students to build relationships, appreciate differences, promote mutual respect, and challenge preconceptions. In retirement, Terri continues to foster a community of cultural understanding, critical thinking, and safe and inclusive spaces where all can thrive and have their voices heard. A dedicated life-long learner and advocate, she continues to expand her knowledge of poverty, mental health, addiction, privilege, trauma-informed practices, and restorative justice and apply it to her community involvement.
