Starting Fresh
2022 feels like a year of fresh starts. After a couple of—let’s say—unusual years, we’re all ready to find a new normal. We’re eager to find a new routine, get in a new groove and start to think about possibilities again. A new year brings with it so much promise. Maybe this is the year we’ll jump on that new business idea, or remodel the kitchen, or get in shape, or get our finances or retirement or estate set up optimally for the future. Luckily for all of us optimists, this issue of the Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory is jam-packed with resources to help you do all of the above— and then some. We, too, have enjoyed a “fresh start” with the directory, beginning with a fresh new design, and we hope you’ll find it even more interactive and inspirational. As always, we introduce you to 20 businesswomen who provide exactly the services you’re looking for to improve your home, health, financial future or business plan. Then we pull back the curtain just a bit and, in a new Q&A section beginning on p. 9, invite them to share their insights on topics all women can relate to: maintaining balance, overcoming challenges, getting inspired and more. We’ve continued our “Our Towns” section, in which we highlight the treasures of the towns that make up our Coulee Region, and we’re thrilled to feature many new resources for local shopping and services among advertisers that complement each area. Each story is a celebration of the women-owned businesses and other features that make each community in the Coulee Region distinct and important. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory a fun, useful and easy way to find services you need and to support women-owned businesses in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www. crwmagazine.com. As we look forward to a promising new year, we hope you’ll make Coulee Region Women, and the empowering stories we serve to tell, a part of yours.

For over 20 years, Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area’s executive director, Kahya Fox, has fought for safe, affordable housing. After joining Habitat for Humanity in 2016, Kahya worked with staff, board, volunteers and community members to launch a rigorous strategic plan that called for the expansion of all programming, including increasing new home production from one to six homes per year. The plan also led to the formation of a Housing Advocacy Committee and the launch of the Habitat for Heroes veterans program. Kahya also oversees operations of the Habitat ReStore, a discount home goods and home improvement store located by the La Crosse County Landfill. After launching a strategic marketing campaign, the ReStore has experienced exponential growth in sales and donations over the past five years, with profits going to support the organization’s mission. Kahya continues her fight for a world in which everyone has a decent place to live and looks forward to continuing to explore new partnerships and efforts.

What does it take to be successful in your career? And what does that look like when family, community and educational responsibilities are added to the mix? We asked the 20 women featured in our 2022 Business Resource Directory key questions about motivation, balance and service, and their answers have much to teach all women who strive to make a positive impact in their community, family and career. What motivates you every morning? What gets you out of bed and excited to go to work and do what you do? Regina Siegel: I come from a farm family, and the importance of serving others has been instilled in me since I was a little girl. Each morning, the desire to serve my family, colleagues, clients and friends drives me to do my very best each day. Nikki Benzing: I love what I do. I meet new people every day. You never know who you might meet and what story www.crwmagazine.com
you might hear. The added bonus is selling products that the customer needs and loves. Making customers happy is the best feeling ever! Samantha Keck: The drive to help others, make someone smile or laugh, and knowing that everything I do, I do to make my workplace and community a better place. I truly am in the business of “people,” and I love meeting new people just as much as growing established relationships. Kahya Fox: At Habitat for Humanity, it’s the families. The process of seeing where families start and how much they accomplish and grow while they build their home brings joy and fulfillment to each day. Jennifer Lough: I am excited to go to work so that I can help people, but I am also motivated by getting things done. I have always been very organized, and crossing things off my todo list gives me a feeling of accomplishment every day. Continued on page 12 2022 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 9

Margaret Severson understands financial circumstances unique to women. Women tend to live longer than men, meaning more years in retirement. Between planning for the expected and preparing for the unexpected, Margaret and her team at Edward Jones in Viroqua have been helping investors build smart strategies for over 21 years. This is where goals and priorities come in. Working? Volunteering? Traveling? A winter home? Women view financial decisions holistically, working toward goals rather than set dollar figures. Margaret helps provide a perspective on whether a spending strategy is realistic and what tradeoffs may need to be made. Margaret has had the pleasure of serving as a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Viroqua since 1999, where she works to help investors manage many unique challenges. She believes it’s much easier to focus on dreams once you understand your goals, how to prepare for them and how to put time on your side.

Q&A
But this past year has opened my mind that it’s achievable and that it’s OK. Society has warped us into thinking the more you work the more you have—but what is the “have”? Finding your work-life balance is so important for one’s sanity and ability to stay present and productive. Can you think of a time when you might have felt defeated, but rallied and overcame a challenge? Heidi Eglash: Not that I wish this on anyone, but the gifts that come with this difficult feeling can thankfully be significant. The key is to stay with the feeling and explore what lessons it has to teach you—perhaps about what’s truly important to you, or more simply about course corrections that you can make. If you can manage to stay open, to learn and to move forward, “failures” will be anything but that. Tammy Zee: I used to look at defeat in business as negative, but after 30 years in the fitness and wellness industry, I’ve chosen to call these challenges stepping stones or lessons. I felt a little defeated once early in my career, when I showed up to teach a fitness class at a new studio and found out that I’d been replaced by someone else and never told. I took this experience as a sign that I needed to focus more on working at my other fitness jobs—jobs I loved and was respected for doing. This was the fuel that propelled me into practicing and studying my craft, pointing me in the direction of getting my master’s degree.
Many of you mention families and community service in your advertorials. Do you feel as if you’ve achieved a state of work-life balance? Sarah Danielson: I believe that balance comes from fulfillment. My schedule is hectic, but I wouldn’t be happy if I weren’t involved in my community. It’s about personal reflection and prioritizing each day. Margaret Severson: I have learned I need to be responsible for daily self-care so I am able to be my best self for others. For me personally, that means eating healthy food, daily exercise and taking care of my mental health by sometimes saying no when asked to do things I don’t have time for. My family always comes first, and the rest falls into place. Peggy Herlitzka: I remember struggling with juggling home and work when our children were young, If I was home with a sick child, I could not stop thinking about what was not getting done at work. If I was at work and had a sick child at home, I could not stop feeling guilty about not being home. Another working mom gave me some great advice: “Wherever you are, be there.” It helped me stay focused at work, and it allowed me to be where I needed to be—guilt-free—when I was snuggled up on the couch with a sick child. Moriah Cody: In my search for the ultimate work-life balance, I’ve come to realize it will be a constant work in progress. 12 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 2022
Stacy Apfel: The company I had been working for decided to close their local office, but I had loved what I was doing. Networking was key: I reached out to a few colleagues in the industry and landed in a fantastic company. Amanda Mish: Two years ago, my husband of almost 10 years passed away, and it changed our family in more ways than one. I felt at times that I was not going to be able to pull myself out of that dark cloud and live on my own again. But I had a wonderful support system at home and at work. I was able to keep myself busy and motivated to keep pushing forward. It would be what my husband would have wanted. He was very supportive in everything that I was able to do and would be proud that I am here and able to tell my story. You’ve all found work you love. What advice would you give to young people on finding work they love? Emily Loe: Don’t be afraid to take a risk. It is never too late for a new opportunity. Law was a second career for me and has allowed me to find my passion: helping people and making a difference. Jacqueline Lin: I love the work I’m doing now, but I didn’t follow the typical route to this place. I pursued interests that I enjoyed: gymnastics, majors in math and physics, graduate school for biomechanics and finally dentistry and orthodontics. I would encourage young people to consider their talents, interests and passions, and then pursue opportunities both in www.crwmagazine.com
Q&A and out of academics that complement those passions. I’ll pass along advice once given to me: Don’t stress too much about your long-term path; just continue to make “the next right decision.” Allyson Krause: Finding work that you love involves having a good understanding of your values and strengths, and that takes time, commitment and self-reflection. Be open to trying new things because you never know what you’ll find out about yourself along the way. Many of us stumbled upon a career that we love by taking risks and making the most of every experience along the way. Angela Czerwinski: Surround yourself with the “doers” in your community. Find a mentor, join a Rotary group and a business networking group, and meet as many people as possible. Laura Hoffman: If you believe it, you can achieve it! I set out to become a small-business owner when I was 25. It happened many years later, and I couldn’t be happier. Set goals that are attainable, and they will happen with time. Amy Stodola: Get uncomfortable. Too often, we get complacent in life and settle—don’t do that! Do something that forces you to have a growth mindset that will keep you hungry and wanting to experience new things. What is the worst thing that could happen when you ask for something? You will be told no. But what if you never asked? Then you’ll never know. crw

With renowned medical facilities, colleges and strong school and community resources, La Crosse is a great city in which to raise a family. On top of that, there’s no shortage of outdoor recreation, arts and culture, food and fun in La Crosse. It also found a spot on the “Business Insider” list of “The 10 Most Exciting Small Cities in America,” landing the number two spot. The city is just begging people to get creative, grow some roots and see where their lives will take them in this expanding community. La Crosse is also home to countless businesses seeking to serve and delight its residents. The Minnesota Side of the River La Crescent • Winona
»
The towns that dot the Minnesota side of the Mississippi River are gems in the Coulee Region. Just across the river from La Crosse is La Crescent, the “Apple Capital of Minnesota.” Tucked in the southeast corner of the state, La Crescent is a delightful town with orchards, beloved local businesses and a small-town Midwestern vibe. This community boasts wonderful educational facilities, numerous parks and other outdoor opportunities. Hop on any one of the three scenic drives in the area (Apple Blossom Scenic Drive, Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway and the Great River Road) to experience just how lovely La Crescent can be. And don’t miss Applefest in September—this beloved festival is organized by a board composed almost entirely of women. Just up Highway 61, Winona is a vibrant river town, bustling with shops, cafés and charm. Here you’ll find national and international industries, three institutions of higher education, a medical center and unique shopping opportunities in the historic downtown. Outdoor opportunities are in abundance here, both on land and on the water. Wander down a trail or boat and swim in the Mississippi for a perfect summer afternoon. If art is your appeal, don’t miss the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, with an impressive collection of works by the masters. Enjoy the Great River Shakespeare Festival on a summer evening or the Frozen 22 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 2022
River Film Festival in February. There’s even a Beethoven festival for classical music lovers. Winona is no stranger to a women-filled workforce. In order to aid the women who are helping Winona stay strong, the Women in Business not-for-profit organization is lending a hand. This organization, which has been around for almost 30 years, aims to inspire women of all occupations and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth. They do this through leadership, networking and education. Each month there is a networking luncheon where women gather together and learn from the key-note speaker. They also build lasting relationships that help grow their businesses. Winona’s vibrant downtown also has a high presence of business women, with approximately 90 percent of the retail establishments being run by women. There are also women operating manufacturing companies and health care systems. The city boasts a very high diversity of leadership roles for women in its community. Both La Crescent and Winona are delightful towns that see women flourishing in their businesses. From financial aid advisors and professors to downtown business owners, there is no shortage of female presence in these communities. www.crwmagazine.com

View from Great River Landing, Onalaska
Onalaska— Beautiful by Nature »
Complementing La Crosse to the north is the city of Onalaska. Very similar to La Crosse in scenery, this city is also surrounded by beautiful bluffs and, of course, the Mississippi River. Starting at the Great River Landing at the crux of Highway 35 and Main Street, you can follow the river along the Great River State Trailhead, which connects you to 101 miles of trails for walking, running and biking. Wherever you go, water is close by, making Onalaska a paradise for boaters, anglers, photographers and anyone who loves the beauty of nature. Enhancing the natural beauty are women important to the art scene in Onalaska, as evidenced by the Onalaska Arts Council. This group composed primarily of women business owners who led the fundraising campaign to create the “Nature’s Backyard” sculpture that now graces Grand River Landing. And we can even thank a woman—Vicki Gilbertson—for commissioning Sunny, the giant sunfish just down Highway 35, an Onalaska icon and favorite stop for tourist photos. In town and out, you’ll find a plethora of booming businesses, many of them women-owned. This flourishing community has over 2,000 businesses, and women play a huge part in keeping this city humming and thriving. Their many local businesses, shops and restaurants contribute to the authentic cultural experience. From restaurants and wine bars to boutiques and numerous health and wellness practices, women-owned businesses abound. www.crwmagazine.com
In Onalaska, for example, is Jenny Akins, serving community members with financial planning at Edward Jones. Women representatives at CPC Printing & Promotions are here to facilitate printing jobs and set your organization up with promotional products. Solid Surface Specialist can connect you with countertops that make your kitchen and bath glow. And the designers at Elevations by Wisconsin Building Supply can help you with your next kitchen remodel or home improvement project. Counselors, yoga instructors, beauty consultants, fitness trainers, video producers, shop owners and dog groomers— these women, and many others, are making a difference in Onalaska by getting involved, empowering other women and being active members of their community.

Holmen • Galesville • Trempealeau
»
Located in the western foot of La Crosse County is the family-friendly village of Holmen. Once a small rural community of just 2,400 residents, Holmen has become a fast-growing community with over 10,500 people today, with a business community ready to serve them. Here you’ll find a strong hometown, abundant outdoor activities and a sense of pride in the overall community that makes Holmen loved by residents, business owners and visitors alike. Rolling farmlands and beautiful bluffs color the local landscape. As the Holmen community grows, so does the number of women in business. From professional services to coffee shops and even an online bookstore, Holmen women are finding creative ways to serve the community. Services like Moxy Salon & Spa and retail like Shiny Objects Boutique delight clients and customers with their offerings. North of La Crosse about 20 miles in the Coulee Region of the Mississippi Valley is the city of Galesville. Boasting attractions like the Apple Affair, Lake Marinuka, A. A. Arnold House, Old Main Historical & Community Arts Center and the Swinging Suspension Bridge, this community is a delight to all who have the pleasure of experiencing it. Galesville was awarded the Scenic Beauty Award from Citizens for a Scenic Wisconsin in 2008 and surely deserves the title. Galesville is the perfect place to support women in business. An incredible 98 percent of businesses in the charming downtown square are owned by women, whether bakeries, Coon Valley 24 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 2022
cafés, boutiques or florists. Additionally, women compose a significant proportion of the board of the Chamber of Commerce. The women of Galesville strengthen the entire community by supporting each other and bringing revenue into the city. Upriver from La Crosse and downriver from Winona is the small village of Trempealeau. Located off the scenic Great River Road, this village is surrounded by a marsh and seven lakes, which create natural scenic beauty and the perfect place for outdoor fun. Trempealeau is home to a vibrant community with a workforce that reflects what it means to truly have a Midwestern work ethic. Here the quality of life is bar none, and the historic downtown is the perfect place for businesses, restaurants and retailers to set up shop. With its proximity to several universities in both La Crosse and Winona, and the beauty of the natural environment, Trempealeau is a fabulous location for both the tourism industry and day-to-day businesses. Don’t miss the astounding views from Perrot State Park, then enjoy a wine picnic at the women-run, award-winning Elmaro Winery. Once you’ve experienced the delights of this area, you might never want to leave—but if you do, you can look to the expertise of Lisa Bourget at Quiet Meadow Travel, a full-service travel agency in nearby Blair. Entrepreneurial women like her are in all corners of the business world in these Wisconsin communities, and their contributions are an important part of what makes Holmen, Galesville and Trempealeau such desirable locations to live in. www.crwmagazine.com

For a day of road-tripping, dining and shopping, there’s no better direction to head than south of La Crosse to the many delightful destinations in Vernon County. The village of Coon Valley is located in the heart of the Driftless Area, which was never touched by glaciers. The absence of glacier activity has created an area of lovely rolling hills and spring-fed trout streams. The main road through town is dotted with shopping stops, including Donna’s Daughters and Sweet Valley Artisans. Outdoor enthusiasts will particularly love visiting the Norskedalen heritage center and exploring the trails. The city of Westby also sits in the Driftless Area and is home to peaceful valleys, towering ridges, breathtaking vistas, tranquil back roads and roaming rivers. Once just a village, Westby has since expanded into a city where you’ll find outdoor activities in abundance, plus boutiques, historical displays, antique shops and a rich local culture. Once you’re here, why not stay a while? The Westby House Inn & Restaurant will receive you warmly. And there’s no better way to celebrate Westby’s Nordic heritage than to pick up a memento from Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts. These prospering businesses and more are part of what makes Westby so unique.

Farther down the road is another great Driftless town— Viroqua—which has put itself on the map as a foodie’s paradise. The innovative Driftless Café has received national recognition, the Viroqua Food Co-op boasts an impressive number of members for a town this size, Wonderstate Coffee caffeinates the region and the Viroqua Farmers Market is a thriving market that serves both customers in the community and the farmers and vendors who sell their goods there. Pasture Pride Cheese in nearby Cashton offers more locally grown goodness. Viroqua’s delightful downtown has been named to the Wisconsin and National Register of Historic Places and is home to the newly renovated Historic Fortney building, filled with business owned or co-owned by women, including salon services, photography, counseling and health and wellness. The Main Street running through town hosts several more womenowned cafés and shops, including the Viroqua Public Market, an emporium filled with locally made goods, many crafted by women. Coon Valley, Westby, Cashton and Viroqua are all wonderful places to support local businesses. Whether you drop by the downtown area to enjoy a cup of coffee or explore some of the many trails in the area, you’re supporting the local culture and community. 2022 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 27

Beyond the Bike Trails West Salem • Bangor • Sparta
»
Founded in 1851, the historic village of West Salem is the home to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland. Tucked in western Wisconsin and lovingly termed “God’s country,” here you’ll find forests, farmland and the roaring Mississippi River. This delightful area is perfect for outdoor recreation, like boating and fishing at Lake Neshonoc, or camping and picnicking at Veteran’s Memorial Park. You could even hop on the La Crosse River State Trail for a bike ride or a run. In conjunction with the fabulous outdoor opportunities, West Salem also has a thriving business community where women are particularly prosperous. The “Ladies of Leonard Street” offer a range of services and shopping on one central street, including floral, home décor and yoga and beauty businesses. Elsewhere in the village, you can explore a new approach to health and wellness at O2 Life Hyperbarics, and many local homeowners rely on Beyer Cabinets for their custom cabinetry needs. East of West Salem is the village of Bangor, small in size but rich in what it has to offer residents and visitors alike. Here you can enjoy the feeling of a small town while having all of the amenities of a big city nearby. Downtown offers retail establishments like the gift and décor shop HouseWarmings. And if you’re searching for fresh, local meat and dairy products, Creamery Creek Farms is the place to go. Veterans Memorial Park offers the perfect place for residents to relax in the great 28 Coulee Region Women Business Resource Directory 2022
outdoors and enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery. Nestled in the rolling hills along the La Crosse River is the city of Sparta. It is known as the “Bicycling Capital of America” and is home to the first rail bed in Wisconsin to be converted to bike trails between Sparta and Elroy. You can’t miss the world’s largest fiberglass bike, marking the access to several nationally recognized bike trails. Beyond biking, Sparta is also home to many businesses run solely by women. The city itself has many women in leadership roles, including the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, the mayor, the superintendent and the Sparta Free Library director. Women are keeping the downtown vibrant with their many coffee shops, gift boutiques, clothing stores and more—places like Sparta Floral and Wild Love Apparel, which are thriving and growing. The icing on the cake of this community: the Bavarian-themed holiday market Kriskindlmarkt, which is embraced by visitors from all over the Coulee Region, and which features delightful stands offering food and handcrafted holiday wares, many created by women artisans. This progressive city is full of women entrepreneurs who support and encourage each other, bringing creativity, energy and a fresh new take on the business scene. www.crwmagazine.com
