“Leaning In” in the Coulee Region Women stepping up to leadership roles, women standing up for themselves
in the workplace, women paving the way for change in the workplace and beyond— nationwide, women in business are mastering the art of “leaning in,” in the parlance of today. We women in the Coulee Region are no exception. Whether leadership roles present themselves in business, in nonprofit organizations or in government, our region provides shining examples of women who are excelling in leadership positions, benefiting the Coulee Region and everyone in it with their talents and skills. Here, in the 2014 issue of Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory, you’ll meet many of them. Whether they are trailblazers in the areas of health, finance, law or beauty, the women featured in these pages represent some of the best of what our region has to offer in terms of leadership, service and professionalism—and we present them here to offer service and inspiration to you. Yet the 2014 Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory offers not just inspiration, but concrete advice for women in any industry, and in any position, who are looking to make a difference by embracing leadership roles. Our feature on page 6, “Leaning In with a Sense of Balance,” illustrates how, as we women work together toward similar goals, we can help each other break ground in pursuing satisfying careers, making change in our communities, supporting and standing up for other women—and, yes, to achieve these goals while embracing the responsibility of family. In addition, you’ll find all the other components that make the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a valuable resource: categorized listings of businesses and a thorough listing of area resources and nonprofit organizations that can help connect you both professionally and personally. If you are interested in joining a networking group, are seeking a community service or looking an opportunity to become involved in our community, this section will point you in the right direction. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.crwmagazine.com. You’ll find that here in the Coulee Region, women are in the business of making change, for women and for all.

Leaning In with a Sense of
Balance
Support and flexibility are key to cultivating women leaders in the Coulee Region and beyond. By Leah Call
In her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, Facebook one or the other is a major barrier preventing many women from
advancing. Some women stop reaching for new opportunities and pursuing career goals because of future or current obligations to raise their children. Can mothers also be leaders in the workplace? Yes, they can. And if you love your career, you will feel better about pursuing career goals even while having a family. Sandberg achieves career/family balance by adhering to a 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in-office work schedule as much as possible. When she is home, she is present for her family. Here in the Coulee Region, 7 Rivers Alliance Executive Director Vicki Markussen reduced her in-office time in order to be home when her own children get home from school. “I value the understanding of my employers, who also value me,” says Markussen, who began her career as a TV journalist in Madison before coming to La Crosse It’s a balancing act While pursuing career ambitions, many women struggle to find a with her family in 1995. Because a work/life balance is important to employees with balance between career and family. The idea that women must choose Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg points out that women today outperform their male counterparts academically, earning 57 percent of undergraduate degrees and 60 percent of master’s degrees in the United States. Yet women run only 21 Fortune 500 companies, hold only 14 percent of executive officer positions and hold only 17 percent of board seats. Just 18 percent of elected officials are female. “How are we going to take down the barriers that prevent women from getting to the top?” Sandberg asks, noting that we women “hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in.”

children, Markussen stresses communication to employers who may be losing skilled employees. “If they know an employee is struggling, they need to have a conversation with the employee. They need to say, ‘We value you, and rather than lose you completely, how can we create a more flexible work environment?’” Anne Hlavacka, director of UW-La Crosse Small Business Development Center, agrees. “There is more accommodation of circumstances for both men and women today, so they can continue to be valuable members of organizations and also be successful in their family life.” Hlavacka adds, “Men today are challenged with the same work/life balance question, because men are more involved in the day-today activities of family than they have historically been. It’s an evolving situation for both men and women.” Having practiced law for a large corporate firm for more than 20 years, Hlavacka, a mother of three, has had to make choices in her own career path. Her family moved back to her hometown of La Crosse when her husband’s Army reservist unit was activated. When she informed her Milwaukee-based employer of her intention, they asked her to continue working for them from La Crosse. “If you build value and people appreciate the value you contribute, then opportunities will present themselves that are good for you and the organization,” says Hlavacka. Technology and opportunities to work from home allow flexibility that helps with the career/family balancing act. Yet that same technology tends to extend the workday, with both men and women working more hours from home after the workday ends. Wisconsin Senator Jennifer Shilling devotes Sundays to family to create the career/family balance she needs. On Sundays she tries be unplug from electronics and fully plug into

her children, ages 4 and 8. Shilling adds, “I don’t like to use the word balance. I use blend. Balance is the idea that it is 50/50, and it’s never 50/50.” To pursue a political leadership position, Shilling says, “You have to have a supportive spouse and family.” She also praises safe,
says Markussen, who notes that she has had multiple mentors throughout her career. Senator Shilling “pays it forward” by offering job-shadowing opportunities to young women in high school and college who are interested in running for public office. “I think it’s important to send that message to young women—you are the leaders of tomorrow.”
Making change
reliable child care as an important key for women to pursue their career ambitions. When it’s appropriate, Shilling takes her family with her, noting that they attended 28 parades together last year.
Find a mentor, be a mentor
To succeed, women today need the support of their employers, their colleagues and their partners. Women also need to support each other. In the Coulee Region, there are numerous women’s professional organizations that meet monthly, usually over the lunch hour, offering women a chance to connect, support and learn from each other. “It’s that mentorship part of it that makes everyone who attends that much more empowered,”
Inflexible work schedules, poor wages, unpaid maternity leave and other workplace issues put working women— especially single mothers—at a disadvantage. Sandberg notes that women in leadership positions in the workplace and in government can bring about necessary policy changes that better enable women to reach their full potential. “To have a good debate on public policy, we need to have those sitting around the table reflect our community,” says Shilling. “I tell people, ‘If you are not in the room, they talk about you; if you are in the room, they talk with you.’ We need to make sure there are more women and minorities running for office and serving, so they can share their concerns and issues, so we can develop the best policy.” Sandberg’s book is intended to start the conversation. What do we need to do to encourage more women in leadership positions in the United States, in Wisconsin and in the Coulee Region? What about in your own workplace? Markussen suggests both male and female employers read Lean In and look at their own workplace. “See if you have as diverse of a work environment as you could have. Have you built a work environment where women are welcome? You need to ask, ‘Are we getting all perspectives?’ [and then make] sure your business model incorporates those. A lot of times, it is just being open to feedback.” crw Leah Call is a Westby-based freelance writer.

My MBA with a Health Care emphasis from Viterbo University provided me with countless opportunities to network, learn from others and grow my skill set so I can serve others with the same values Viterbo is known for: hospitality, integrity and stewardship. I didn’t know if I could find the time to go to graduate school while working full time, raising two daughters and keeping the volunteer commitments that I had made. I certainly worried about being able to afford school with two teenagers, and I thought that online education was perhaps the only way I could do it. However, everyone at Viterbo made it an easy decision—from the financial aid office to the advisors who treated me as a colleague. The 608-796-3379 energy from discussions with classmates carried me mba@viterbo.edu through the week and made me a better coworker, www.viterbo.edu/mba wife and mother. I really grew as an individual.
