SURVIVING & THRIVING
Learn how to protect your business if disaster strikes. BY JULIE NELSON
August 25, 2015, started as a regular day for Mike and Joan Gazeley of La Crosse. Joan enjoyed the sunny weather as she ran errands, and Mike stopped into the business they own, the Bluffside Tavern, “just to check on things.” Three minutes after Mike walked in the door, the couple’s lives changed completely. If you’ve been in the Coulee Region long, you probably know what happens next in this story: An out-of-control truck crashed into the bar, leaving the Gazeleys with a gaping hole and an unusable building. For a good two months after that, the Bluffside was out of business. The Gazeleys’ income source came to a halt, the people they regularly came in contact with were not around and their day-to-day routine changed considerably. Statistics show that 40 percent of business owners who

experience a disaster never open their doors again. Experts say the ones who do come back are the ones who had a plan.
tug-of-war with the insurance companies,” Mike says it’s the insurance money that’s allowing them to rebuild.
Update your insurance
Protect your information
“The number one step you can take is to make sure your insurance is up to date,” says Lori Getter, the spokesperson for the Wisconsin Emergency Management agency. “One of the saddest circumstances I encounter is when I meet with people after a disaster who purchased insurance 10 years ago and haven’t looked at it since. The policy they’ve been maintaining all these years no longer meets today’s needs.” Mike Gazeley concurs. He says he is fortunate that Joan handles the financial side of the business, and she was well versed on what insurance policies they had. Hours after the crash, Joan was on the phone with insurance adjusters. And while “it’s always a
Another factor that’s allowing the Gazeleys to get back in business is their contacts. After living in La Crosse for so many years, they knew exactly whom they needed to call—from the lumber company that immediately patched the hole in their wall to the vendors who would not need to deliver beer the next day. Mike says one lesson he learned in this disaster was to make sure all necessary contact names and phone numbers are written down and accessible to others. Had he been sent to the hospital after the truck hit, his employees would have needed to know where to start. Getter encourages businesses to go one

step further and store critical information in multiple locations, one of which is at least 30 miles away. That way, if a flood comes, a tornado hits or an oil train explodes, the information is still intact if your building or even an entire neighborhood is wiped out. Getter says many businesses take advantage of cloud data storage.
Make a plan
Brenda Hanson teaches businesses to be ready if disaster strikes. As La Crosse County’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, she points out that the ratio of emergency responders to the number of people in the county is actually very small. So if your emergency plan is to wait until help arrives, you may be out of luck. She encourages business owners and employees to empower themselves by being ready, both at home and at work. “Know what your key operations are. Do you need a loading dock, a kitchen or access to the Internet?” says Hanson. “If one or more of these are knocked out for a day, a week or longer, do you have an idea of how you might get the job done?” She says knowing other businesses you might collaborate with will give you options in an unexpected situation. In the Coulee Region, for example, a huge snow or ice storm has the ability to change our daily operations with minimal warning. Would you know how to contact all your employees to tell them to stay home one day? If some or all of your employees had to stay overnight, would you have blankets, water or food for them? What if someone is stranded in a company vehicle—is there an emergency kit in the vehicle that can keep them alive until help arrives? Even if you’re at home and the power goes out, can you find a flashlight with batteries? Do you have any nutritious food that doesn’t have to be heated?
business to recover. The Bluffside, for example, buys pizzas from a small, local vendor. The sooner the Bluffside is selling pizzas again, the sooner that pizza business will recoup its lost sales. Gazeley says being a part of the Coulee Region community is a benefit in itself. “I’ve had so many offers of help,” he says. “It makes me very proud to live in La Crosse.” crw As an employee of The Salvation Army, Julie Nelson has been part of developing an emergency plan to provide services in case of disaster. She’s also gotten really good at fire drills.

Where to begin
Emergencies can be small, such as a temporary power outage, or they can be devastating, like the tornado that wiped out Joplin, Missouri. Hanson says trying to make a plan for every contingency is overwhelming. But she says you need to start somewhere. She suggests downloading one of the lists published by emergency management agencies and picking some “low-hanging fruit.” She advises, “Find an easy task on the list that you can do or delegate, and do it. Set a goal to get it done in a month. Then next month, pick another item from the list.” Hanson adds that the best plan in the world is of no value if no one knows about it. Having an employee lunch where you all brainstorm ideas or talk about the plans can be an effective tool to keep everyone in the loop. Good old-fashioned fire drills and tornado drills can someday save a life. Hanson says planning for emergencies empowers you as a business owner or employee, and it also helps build community resilience. The sooner one business can bounce back, the easier it is for another
