Cultivating Community For more than 15 years, Coulee Region Women has proudly stood by its tag line: “Connecting you with your community.” For 15 years, we have done this by featuring women in all walks of life in the Coulee Region in high-quality articles and photography, and by creating opportunities for connections to goods, services and community events through our advertisers. At Coulee Region Women, we are in the business of building relationships and inviting more women and businesses into community—not only with our magazine, but with each other.

BUSINESS & RESOURCE DIRECTORY

The 2017 issue of Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory—now in its eighth year of publication—takes community-building one step further. In this annual publication, not only do we introduce you to local women who run successful businesses that provide essential services, but we also connect you to countless community resources— services, charities and networking groups—throughout the area.

editor Betty Christiansen

We take our commitment to community so strongly in this issue that we’ve featured two articles that take two different twists on the business-community connection. On page 6, “The Business of Giving Back” explores ways local businesses foster community giving—in all its forms—among themselves and their employees. “The Culture Connection” on page 15 examines workplace culture—the community that is built among employees within workplaces—and why it is an important factor in successful businesses. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.crwmagazine.com. We’re honored to “connect you to your community,” and we look forward to doing so for years to come.

Those of us who live and work in the Coulee Region know the value of being a part of a community. The more we help each other, the more everyone benefits. That’s why a number of businesses in the area are devoting a portion of their resources—financial and otherwise—to giving back to the community. Sheila Garrity, the Executive Director of the La Crosse Community Foundation, talks with a lot of business owners and businesspeople who want to make the community stronger by contributing financially. “It’s hometown people supporting their hometown,” she says. “Both the business leaders and individuals we talk to express that they appreciate what the community has done for them and for their business, and they want to give back.” Many ways to give If you’ve been to a fundraiser lately, you know sponsorships are a big part of the financial success of the event. You’ll also see sponsors making it possible for you to attend a Loggers game at an affordable price, enjoy music at Riverfest and watch the Oktoberfest parade. The Culture Connection Workforce Connections examines the connection between workplace culture and employee satisfaction. by Jessie Foss

Is it the conversations that happen around the office each morning as coworkers catch up on the most recent episode of their favorite television show? Is it the feel of the office: the lighting, the noise level or the look of the office furniture? Is it the feeling each employee gets when the boss enters the office? Or is it all these things and so much more? Workplace and culture are two words that on their own are fairly easy to define. But together they become a more complex concept that keeps business leaders wondering exactly how it impacts their organizations and how to create a culture that motivates and —Anne retains employees.

force that is powerful and invisible and has far-reaching effects.” Finch says, “Culture is what happens when you leave the room. It’s not something someone does for you, and it takes cultivation.” The vast majority of business leaders believe culture is important in their organizations, according to a 2015 study by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Those leaders also say culture is one of the top five things that make their businesses valuable. However, only 15 percent of these leaders say the culture of their business is where Finch it should be, while 92 percent say they believe improving culture would increase their business’s value.

“Culture is what happens when you leave the room. It’s not something someone does for you, and it takes cultivation.”

What it is and why it matters

“Workplace Culture: Why It Matters for Retention, Recruitment and Success” took center stage at a breakfast forum hosted by Workforce Connections in September. The forum featured two experts in the field: Jerry McGeorge, Vice President of Cooperative Affairs of CROPP Cooperative, and Anne Finch, Chief Information Office/Vice President of Logistics Health Inc. McGeorge describes culture as “an energy ww w w. w.ccrrw wm maaggaazzi innee. c. coomm w

Cultivating culture

Building and changing an organization’s culture takes time patience and time— close to three years, Finch says. While the organizational culture takes time, she says it is also important to always be thinking about the shadow you’re individually casting. Once you’ve worked on yourself,

you can then help your team and eventually the entire organization. Whether accidentally or deliberately, Finch believes every business is building a culture, so leaders should be approaching each day with clarity and vision when it comes to their business’s culture. “Leaders must walk the talk,” she says. “Actions speak way louder than a poster in the hallway.” While Finch says culture isn’t one-sizefits-all, there are some key ingredients to building a culture that lead to success. • Mission: why does the business exist? • Vision: where is the organization going? • Value: the how behind the what. McGeorge agrees. He says, “If we don’t do something about culture, it will happen. Employees need to ask if they are doing things to make the culture a positive and productive part of the organization.” crw

Debra McKenney, Business Debra (Debi) McKenney is a Senior Business Relationship Manager at Wells Fargo Bank and a lifelong resident of La Crosse. In 1993, at the start of her 40+ year career in banking, she was the first woman business banker in La Crosse. She was on the forefront in expanding this formerly predominantly male role to women. Not only did Debi survive—but thrive—as a female pioneer in the world of business banking. Her employer encouraged community involvement, and Debi embraced it wholeheartedly. Myrna “Dee” Peacock, Posthumous Honor An advocate of learning and a firm believer in the right to vote being essential to the empowerment of women, Myrna “Dee” Peacock devoted more than 50 years of her life as an active member of the League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area. Her life was permeated with compassion for individuals in all walks of life and a gift for making others feel valued. With her husband of 57 years, Lyle, Dee volunteered thousands of hours to organizations such as Coulee Region RSVP, Mobile Meals of La Crosse, YWCA La Crosse, Great Rivers United Way, La Crosse County, Congregation Sons of Abraham, and others. After her passing in July, her friends and co-nominators reflected, “(Dee) worked tirelessly, happily, and generously for family, friends, and the greater community.” “She was a true servant leader.” Po Too, Western Technical College In 1997, Po Too and her family survived a harrowing two-week escape from a civil war in Burma to head for the border of Thailand. She spent the following nine years with her family in the refugee camp Tham Him. Po’s experiences of war, escape, and living in the refugee camps strengthened her determination for success. She was the first child in her family to have the opportunity to attend college, a goal her parents always wanted for her and all her siblings as a means to personal success and fulfillment, as well as a positive influence on the future of the Karen community, her tribe. Stacy Shapiro, Non-Profit Stacy believes that we are all connected on life’s journey, and kindly sharing of ourselves is where we can find genuine value. While she finished her BA in Communications from UW-Madison, she conducted her first fundraiser for the March of Dimes. After graduation, she held various leadership roles nationwide in the nonprofit world. She is/has been personally involved with many organizations, including current service through Women in Philanthropy and the Viterbo University D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership Advisory Council. Dr. Virginia “Ginny” Wintersteen, Trailblazer Virginia is a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Gundersen Health System. She has been a lecturer for the UW-La Crosse Physician Assistant program and has taught Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics at Viterbo University. She was also a proud member of the varsity volleyball team. Ginny is an advocate for those with physical challenges and their families. She was co-chair in the creation of Kids Coulee at Myrick Park, the first accessible playground in western Wisconsin. Most recently, she founded the Coulee Region “Frost” Sled Hockey program, the first team sport in the area for those with physical disabilities.

I want my closest friends to take pride in being women and not conform to any stereotypes that society throws their way,” says 17-year-old Olivia. Love + Medicine saves the day! “I wasn’t happy about having to stay in the hospital another day. Then in walks a superhero—mask, cape, the whole deal. In a superhero pose, with hands on hips, she says, ‘I heard someone is not having a very good day.’ It was then I knew it was my superhero nurse, Angie. She gave me a shot of laughter and saved the day.” Creative caring makes our staff some of the best in the world. We call it Love + Medicine.
