Welcome! Paul Westlie LABA President Hartland Construction LLC Spring is in the air and that means … Home Show season is here! With each spring season, homeowners and want-to-be homeowners are thinking about this year’s goals and home projects. We find ourselves surfing Pinterest and Houzz.com, looking at new real estate listings, thinking about updates on our homes or working on finalizing new construction plans. We find ourselves under pressure to choose the best fit for a remodeler, builder or general contractor. Surfing the web for ideas over the winter kept us occupied, but now we’re ready to get out and meet the people behind the business name and touch and feel the products. The 2018 La Crosse Area Builders Association Home Show is a “one-stop shop” for this. Presented with an array of local vendors and rows of booths, you get the best opportunity to meet the builders themselves and touch the products that you’ve been eyeing up on the web. Beyond builders and products, the Home Show offers so much more. A variety of local vendors for many home, finance, and lifestyle needs are all in one place at one time to help guide you into a successful spring. In addition to our booth vendors, we are again incorporating daily events and featured sponsors and vendors to make your Home Show experience even more relaxing, enjoyable and worthwhile. On behalf of the La Crosse Area Builders Association, I look forward to seeing you at the Home Show and hope you find valuable resources, in a relaxing atmosphere, for your upcoming projects. Warmly, Paul Westlie LABA President

Kraig (Pee Wee) Lassig Home Show Committee Chair Lautz Lassig Custom Builders It is time once again for the La Crosse Area Builders Association to gather professionals in their respective fields all under one roof for the Onalaska Home Show! Building material suppliers will feature windows, siding, exterior doors, interior doors, trim selections, shingle options and exterior deck ideas. Kitchen design experts will be available with all the latest information related to kitchens, and Xcel Energy will be on hand with information on the latest energy solutions for your project. Unwind Friday at the show with a complimentary glass of wine from Elmaro Winery or a glass of beer from Turtle Stack Brewery. Saturday, you can start your day (10 a.m.2 p.m.) with a complimentary cup of coffee from Cabin Coffee. Enjoy one of the DIY seminars throughout the day. Later, we will be offering a complimentary beverage from Pearl Street Brewery or a hard cider from Hoch Orchards. Bring your kids Sunday! The Home Depot is once again showing our future builders how to build some kidfriendly projects. They can also enjoy the “touch-a-truck” area featuring a race car from Henderson Motorsports and a truck from River States Truck and Trailer. We aim to help you with your home needs while making it enjoyable to attend this year’s La Crosse Area Builders Association’s Home Show at the Onalaska Omni Center. See you there! Building Homes, Building Careers LABA connects students to careers built on a solid foundation. By Betty Christiansen Contributed photos

Perhaps the biggest conundrum for a high school student nearing graduation is deciding which direction to take next. College appeals to many, but not all. The need for skilled workers is high—but will your interests match a high-demand job? And what career will make you feel proud of the work you do, where your accomplishments are valued and you feel like you’re making a real difference instead of just being a cog in a wheel? Alex Goodman, location manager for Wisconsin Building Supply and the Building Careers Committee chair for the La Crosse Area Builders Association, is promoting a field he hopes will appeal to many: the building industry. Through LABA’s Building Careers program, Goodman and others want to spread the word that the building industry offers something for everyone. “It’s not just swinging hammers,” he disputes. “Our industry is so much broader than that.” A job for you

The building trades offer something for everyone: if you like to work with your hands, there’s a job for you. If you’re technically minded, there’s a job for you. If your career interests lie with

business or banking, there’s a job for you. Whether you like to work indoors or out, crave constant variety or prefer to see a job through to the end, are a people person or a project person—the perfect job may be waiting for you in the building industry. And LABA’s Building Careers program is reaching out to area high school students to show them exactly what they can do. “With the Building Careers program, we’re trying to attract people to our trade,” says Goodman. “We are bringing tools to schools”—literally and figuratively—“to show kids the good jobs that exist in this sector. We want to give them that aha moment” when they realize there’s a job in building that’s perfect for them. How does Building Careers achieve this? The program is twofold: First, they get high school students out in the field for firsthand exposure and the opportunity to meet people in all branches of the building industry, and then they provide actual tools to high school industrial technology classes and building programs to offer handson experience with tools that schools may not be able to afford.

all over the area the chance to see actual jobsites, visit actual offices and meet the real professionals that populate the local building industry. It’s wildly popular. “We always have 100 to 120 students on the tour; sometimes as many as 170,” says Goodman. “We have to split them up.” Students, he notes, attend from almost every local high school: Logan and Central in La Crosse, Onalaska, Luther, Tomah, Melrose-Mindoro, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Holmen and more. “The students display a great interest in the whole building process,” notes Goodman. “And as the number of students increase, so does the number of females attending with an interest of how things go together. Everyone asks great questions that stimulate great conversations.” A typical tour may look something like this: the students are welcomed by Goodman or another LABA volunteer at one of the local building supply companies. Then students divide into groups and rotate through stations that give them a sample of the various opportunities: a lumberyard tour, then a visit with a cabinetmaker, a drafter and more. Next, the groups go on actual jobsites, talking with carpenters, electricians, plumbers and others, experiencing the great variety of occupations in this field all in one morning.

The right tools for the job

The second focus of the Building Careers committee is Tools for Schools, a program in which LABA supplies industrial technology classes and building programs in local schools with the actual tools students need to learn the trade and other opportunities the schools may not be able to afford on their own. “Many school districts had shop classes,” Goodman notes, “but we wanted to assist the schools in creating off-site programs—building mini barns, roofing. There was no money for that, so LABA stepped in 17 years ago.” Through proceeds gained from an annual auction of donated surplus building supplies, the Cabin Fever Fun-Raiser and member donations, LABA offers schools grants to fund these tools. Schools apply for this grant money and provide a wish list of the items they’d like to receive. “We always have at least 10 applicants and have provided up to $6,500 worth of tools in one year,” says Goodman. “The schools usually get their first tool choice, often even their second.” These choices range from 20 nail aprons to a compound miter saw and stand, and everything in between. “Our biggest request is for cordless drills,” says Goodman. “A drill/driver combo is such a handy thing to have on a jobsite. And this way,” he adds, “students

get hands-on experience with the exact equipment they’d use on an actual jobsite,” which can come in handy, say, on a summer construction job. And this benefit doesn’t end there. “We’re building life skills,” he says. “These students will be homeowners someday; they’ll be able to work on their own home and have contacts in the building industry.”

Starting conversations

Look for LABA volunteers at this year’s LABA Home Show— they will be staffing the Building Careers booth, offering tickets for a 50-50 raffle to fund the program and generally starting the conversation about the myriad possibilities offered by the local building industry. Goodman can’t state it enough: there is something here for everyone. He uses himself as an example. “My dad was a builder; I was on jobsites from the time I was 3,” he says. “I grew up knowing I didn’t want to build, but I loved the industry. I worked my way up from the lumberyard, eventually to sales, and now to management.” He offers that experience to anyone searching for a career. “Look to the trades,” he advises. “There’s so much opportunity there.” Betty Christiansen is editor of Coulee Region Women.

Your Kitchen in 2018 New trends help you update the most popular room in your house.

Your kitchen is most likely the most

important room in your house: where the kids do their homework, where your friends come for coffee, where you pay your bills and—for most of us—where we cook our meals. It’s also the first thing that home shoppers look at, and that’s why the experts on the National Association of Home Builders’ Design Committee pay close attention to color, pattern, lighting and appliance trends. Here’s what these experts are seeing as they look to the kitchen of 2018:

Open floor plans

The kitchen as a gathering place is here to stay, say these designers. And as islands get bigger, some homeowners are swapping the kitchen table and “command center” desk for a comfy armchair or two where you can sit and scroll through your tablet or phone while you enjoy a cup of tea. Storage remains very important, and the clean lines of today’s kitchen design— fewer knickknacks and less clutter on the countertops—mean more homeowners are asking for bigger mud rooms with ample shelves for everything from canned goods to vases. www.labaonline.com

Technology

The “smart home” is becoming more evident in today’s kitchen. Just as thermostats and security devices can be controlled via a smartphone, so too can ovens, refrigerators and other appliances. This trend, designers say, is only growing. And that oven? It’s still likely to be stainless steel, but in a black stainless steel, which is now among the most popular colors of kitchen appliances. Other popular shades include deep jewel colors, especially navy blue, in high-end ovens.

Counters and cabinets

Granite countertops remain a classic choice for the traditionalist, but there are plenty of new options to choose from. Quartz countertops have improved remarkably since

they were first introduced—coming in larger slabs so having a seam between countertop pieces is less likely. When it comes to cabinets, top designers are saying that intricate designs and fancy knobs are very “last century.” Think flat panels and clean lines, with a focus on maximizing storage. And as more families use their kitchen as a hub for entertaining, the “beverage center” is coming into its own this year. Having a cabinet and countertop section with a sink, icemaker and mini-fridge lets your guests pour their own drinks or hungry children get their own snacks without congesting the other areas of the kitchen.

What does LABA do? LABA works to better the building industry: • We are watchdogs for changes that can affect home building and remodeling. • We offer a membership of trained, qualified and insured builders and tradespeople to the consumer. • We do the homework so consumers can build, remodel or repair their homes with confidence in our members. From builders to electricians, plumbers, concrete specialists, roofers, landscapers, fireplace installers, stonework specialists, heating and air specialists, and so many others, our members affect the work on your most expensive purchase … your home. Why should I use LABA? LABA members are insured, sign a code of ethics, and do continuing education to keep up with industry standards. One phone call to LABA can open doors to having a better experience and better success with home projects. LABA members have ties to the community and often do service projects to help strengthen the community in which we work and live. We often get calls from consumers who are having issues with a builder or remodeler who is not a member of the La Crosse Area Builders Association, and all the calls end the same way: “Next time I am going to call LABA before I hire someone.” Our list of members is FREE to everyone and is available on our website at www.labaonline.com.
