Plan for Success When women start a business, they do so with hope and optimism. They see a need
in the community, and they see a way they can fill it. They do their research, they secure their support and, ultimately, they take the plunge to make it happen. In the 2015 issue of Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory, we’ll introduce you to numerous women who have done just that and are proud to present to you their products and services. And while what they have to offer this community ranges widely—from health services to legal advice, financial planning to pet care, interior design to wellness and beauty— each woman has undergone a similar process to build her business. Each had a passion and area of expertise, then methodically made a plan to bring it to others, successfully. What is this planning process, and how might you benefit from it as well? Our article on page 6, “Smart Women Plan Ahead,” sheds some light and gives sound advice on the topic of business planning, pointing out that preparing a business plan is the secret to success for many entrepreneurs—especially women. According to Forbes writer Natalie MacNeil, women will create more than half of all new small-business employment opportunities by 2018. That’s a statistic women can be proud of, and we’re proud of our own Coulee Region women who are on that cutting edge. You can read about them—and much more—in this issue of the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory. Also useful are our categorized business listings and a thorough listing of area resources and nonprofit organizations that can help connect you both professionally and personally. If you are interested in joining a networking group, are seeking a community service or are looking for an opportunity to become involved in our community, this section will point you in the right direction. We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.crwmagazine.com. We hope it helps you plan ahead for all your business and personal needs.

SMART WOMEN PLAN AHEAD
A business plan is an essential tool for getting a new business off the ground. BY SUSAN C. SCHUYLER
You’ve got a business idea, and you know it’s a good one.
But the idea of making it a reality is daunting, and you don’t know exactly where to begin. Of all of the activities that go into starting a business, most experts agree that none is more important than writing a business plan. Often, this vital document can protect a start-up from ruin. Kelly K. Spors writes in the Wall Street Journal that a business plan can help nascent entrepreneurs—individuals who are actively engaged in activities related to starting their own businesses—“nail down important aspects of their concept, and sometimes prevent costly mistakes.” Judith Cone, the legendary founder of pharmaceutical company Marion Labs, says it best in Forbes: “If you’re going to fail, fail on paper.”
The good news and the bad news
All that good advice is great—but although research consistently confirms that a business plan has a positive impact on a start-up’s success, many entrepreneurs don’t bother to write one, according to The New York Times business blogger, Scott Shane. He says that for many reasons, those eager to start a new business think of writing a business plan as a waste of time. It turns out that the same risk-taking traits that make entrepreneurs successful can be what Joeseph E. Levangie calls the “dark side” of entrepreneurship in the New England Journal of Entrepreneurship. Traits like difficulty taking direction or advice, thoughtless decision making, need for control and hyperactivity may make writing a business plan challenging for entrepreneurs. Women, however, are more likely to be more successful at the task, according to the Forbes article “11

Reasons 2014 Will Be a Breakout Year for Women Entrepreneurs.” Research conducted by Zenger Folkman indicates that women “think more accurately about the resources needed to accomplish a given outcome.”
The “Quiet Revolution”
That makes sense when you look at the numbers. Times have never been better for women entrepreneurs. Women now own about one-third of U.S. businesses, and over the last 15 years, women-owned businesses have grown 150 percent faster than other small enterprises, according to a 2014 report, “Women-Owned Businesses,” from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Center for Women in Business. However, in 2013, men were still in the majority among the self-employed. In Wisconsin, for example, only 35 percent of selfemployed workers were female, according to the report. That trend is likely to reverse, according to Natalie MacNeil in Forbes: “Women will create over half of the 9.72 million new small business jobs expected to be created by 2018 and more and more are doing this from home offices across the country.”
Getting started
No matter what your gender, the bottom line is to protect your bottom line, so it’s worth facing the daunting task of writing a business plan (which can seem like the professional version of a 50-page term paper). Fortunately, there are many resources to help overcome potential writers’ block. A large and profitable business-planning industry is eager to help. For example, a recent search for “business plan” on Amazon.com came back with more than 100,000 book titles. If

Times have never been better for women entrepreneurs. Women now own about of U.S. businesses, and over the last

150% faster than other small enterprises. you’re not up to the task of sorting through all those resources, you can have a pro do it, which can cost up to $10,000, according to Forbes magazine. Given entrepreneurs’ independent spirits, most will prefer to do it themselves. To guide their efforts, the Entrepreneurial Training Program (ETP) offered by the Wisconsin Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse offers coaching and instruction. The center’s website, www.uwlax.edu/sbdc, has details on the program, as well as many start-up resources. The SBDC’s staff also is available to discuss your business plans. The La Crosse Public Library, UW-L’s Murphy Library and Western Technical College’s Academic Resource Center can be great places to begin your research, as well. There also are many digital resources that will walk you through the business-planning process using software templates. However, the Harvard Business School website warns entrepreneurs to avoid following these models too closely: “While templates and samples can be helpful, the key to a good plan is making your own argument—for your unique business—as convincingly as you can.”
Map out your strategy
Writing a business plan can be time-consuming. In a 2007 Wall Street Journal article, Tom Kinnear, executive director of the entrepreneurial studies institute at the University of Michigan, says it shouldn’t take more than three or four weeks to complete your plan. “There’s no question that some people are obsessed with writing plans that are too wrought with detail,” Kinnear says. “Early on, all you really need is a compass.” There are standard components that should be a part of every business plan, which are listed in the sidebar on this page. In his article, Levangie, who wrote hundreds of business plans and read thousands more, says business plans must be “concise, complete, consistent, powerful, easy-to-understand, and obvious as to how the application of funds reduce venture risk.” No matter what your strategy, business planning consultant and CEO Rosalind Resnick advises in her Wall Street Journal column to “take the time to map out your strategy in words and numbers so that you can figure out for yourself where you want your business to go and how you’re going to get there. You’ll be glad you did.” Susan C. Schuyler is a freelance writer and instructor at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She also is a recovering entrepreneur who has written more than her share of business plans.
Components of a Business Plan Part 1: The Executive Summary The executive summary is the most important section of your business plan. It provides a concise overview of the entire plan along with a history of your company. This section tells the reader why you think your business idea will be successful. It should be the last section you write and should be no more than four pages in length. Part 2: Market Analysis The market analysis section should illustrate your knowledge about the particular industry your business is in. It should include an industry description and outlook, target market information, market test results, lead times and an evaluation of your competition. Part 3: Company Description Without going into detail, this section should show how all of the different elements of your business fit together. It should include information about the nature of your business as well as list the primary factors that you believe will make your business a success. Part 4: Organization & Management This section should include your company’s organizational structure, details about the ownership of your company, profiles of your management team and the qualifications of your board of directors. Part 5: Marketing and Sales Strategies Marketing is the process of creating customers—the lifeblood of your business. In this section, you define your marketing strategy. There is no single way to approach a marketing strategy; your strategy should be part of an ongoing self-evaluation process and unique to your company. Part 6: Service or Product Line In this section, describe your service or product, emphasizing the benefits to potential and current customers. Focus on the areas where you have a distinct advantage. Identify the problem in your target market for which your service or product provides a solution. Part 7: Funding Request Here, you will request the amount of funding you will need to start or expand your business. You will want to include your current funding requirement, your future funding requirements over the next five years, how you will use the funds you receive and any long-range financial strategies that you are planning that would have an impact on your funding request. Part 8: Financials The financials should be developed after you’ve analyzed the market and set clear objectives. That’s when you can allocate resources efficiently. Most of the time, creditors will want to see what you expect your company to be able to do within the next five years. Make sure that your projections match your funding requests; creditors will be on the lookout for inconsistencies. Adapted from www.sba.gov.

Thompson Animal Medical Center Jean Heyt Thompson, DVM Veterinarian/Owner
VETERINARY Thompson Animal Medical Center has been caring for Coulee Region pets since 1978. “We never say it’s just a dog or just a cat,” says Dr. Jean Heyt Thompson. “We know your pets are members of your family, and we strive to provide the best care for your best friend.” That commitment to excellence has led TAMC to invest in the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation process. “We are honored to be among the top 12 percent of all small animal veterinary clinics,” says Dr. Jean. To achieve this, TAMC met or exceeded 900 industry standards for patient care, recordkeeping, customer service, education and more. Dr. Jean and her husband, Dr. Tom, share a commitment beyond the veterinary practice they love. In 2013, Dr. Jean was named Oktoberfest Maple Leaf Parade Marshal, and The Upper Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals honored the couple for their philanthropic work for Children’s Miracle Network, the La Crosse Police Department and other organizations.
