Creative Writing: Twilight Reflection
As the sun slips below the horizon the soft muted colors of twilight begin to climb the western sky. Now comes the slowing down time, those long drawn-out moments between day and night, work and rest. It's time to sit, to think, to be. In those moments of imperfect clarity I see the shadow of my day. I count, not the tasks completed, but the satisfaction I felt at work well done. I feel the aching of my muscles and recall the pleasure of performing physical labor. As twilight softens the hard edges of reality, I see my garden, not as it is, but as it will be when my work is complete. I see myself walking paths which don't yet exist, bordered by trees whose full growth I will only see in fading twilight. The harsh sounds of the day soften and begin to recede. The birds twitter and then grow silent as they find their rest. A gentle quietness now descends upon my world, matched by the quietness of my mind and body. The quietness is a welcome prelude to the deep silence of the night to follow. Shadows lengthen and then disappear as the light thins and gradually fades away. My little patch of earth has turned its face from the sun and now looks toward the vast darkness of space. As the crickets begin their nightly serenade, I stand and stretch my weary body. Now that I've seen the day to its rest, it's time to look to my own. Judy Titus is a participant at SourcePoint's enrichment center.
