For most people getting up the 88 steps on Castle Hill can be a bit of a challenge but for audacious Vasanti Patel going up and down once wasn’t enough. For her Captain Sir Tom Moore Challenge, Vasanti decided to climb up and down the Castle Hill steps 100 times in April. 72 year old Vasanti is a keen Parkrunner and volunteers at Thetford’s Junior Parkrun on Sunday mornings. “I wanted to help something in the town, I’m a big Parkrun fan as I’ve made lots of friends there, so it’s been lovely to help Junior Parkrun”. Initially in February Vasanti was challenged by a couple of her Parkrun friends to go up and down Castle Hill and she said it was hard getting to the top of the 80 foot mound. Encouraged by her friends Marcos and Donna to try a second climb Vasanti carried on, telling herself she could manage a 3rd climb. During February she managed to go up and down the steps 31 times, followed by 74 in March. After coming across the Sir Tom Moore Challenge, Vasanti decided to aim for a 100 climbs and descents during April. On one Saturday in April Vasanti managed 11 climbs and descents, “I just kept going that day! It used to make me breathless when I first started, but now I can carry on without any problem so I can see how it has improved my health a lot. Most days I went up and down 6 or 7 times, but if I wasn’t tired, I just kept going!” People soon noticed her walking up and down and stopped to say hello and she’s often asked if she’s going up Castle Hill if she’s spotted in the park.
Vasanti climbed an astonishing 9152 steps at Castle Hill for her Captain Sir Tom Moore Challenge

THETFORD MARKET
Meadow Market Fruit Stall
t t
The Seekings family has been trading on the Thetford Saturday Market for just over 20 years. Now trading as Meadow Market, and run by Scott Seekings, with the help of two of his daughters, son-in-law Lewis and often his mother Pauline. Scott is the second generation to run the stall, taking up the reins since the sad passing of his father, Anthony ‘the man in the hat’ last year after a short illness. “Throughout my childhood I was always helping mum and dad at work, firstly in their grocery shop in King’s Lynn and then out on the stalls in Norfolk and Suffolk” Scott explained.
f
When the market had to close during the pandemic it was really important to all at Meadow Market that regular customers and those who were isolating were able to gain access to fresh fruit and vegetables so they created a short
t f
term delivery service, which has also led to new customers coming on board. The team are delighted to see many of these new customers visit the market each week and are really grateful for the support that the Thetford community has shown them and the whole market. As we enter the warmer months and the possible easing of restrictions, Meadow Market are looking forward to continuing to bring a huge selection of the finest fresh local and imported produce to the market each Saturday. Scott said, “We buy daily, from our trusted wholesalers and direct from lots of local independent growers. This makes the produce as fresh as possible, often only harvested a few hours before we have it on the stall ready for our customers.”

Two Very Different Burials In Thetford Priory I
il t t
In June 1524, a funeral cortège made its way from Framlingham in Suffolk to Thetford, a distance of some 35 miles. It accompanied the body of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, who had commanded the victorious English army at the Battle of Flodden Field in1513. He had died, aged 81, on 21 May, 1524. Taking part were about 900 lords and gentlemen, Garter King at Arms and three other heralds and as many as three coach-loads of friars. A bishop and three abbots conducted the funeral services. 400 ‘messes’, which was food for one meal, were served to the mourners later and 1900 people were given black liveries to commemorate the duke. Although the cost, about £1300, is estimated to be about half the Duke’s annual income, it would be expected that the mourners and the poor who received alms would forever remember him in their prayers.

blow, both personally and dynastically. Henry refused to arrange the funeral and left everything to the Duke of Norfolk, Fitzroy’s father in law. It’s not known what he died of, possibly tuberculosis, but it could have been the plague because Henry ordered that the body be sealed in lead and taken for secret interment in a closed cart. This didn’t happen and it was transported in an open cart on a bed of straw. Two mourners followed at a distance and it’s thought that they were the only ones present at the burial. There is no record of arrangements or alms for perpetual prayers to commemorate this Duke’s soul. Thetford Priory was dissolved on 16 February, 1540, when the last prior and 16 monks surrendered to the King’s commissioners. The then Duke of Norfolk petitioned Henry to keep the church as a family chapel as he had ordered an elaborate tomb for Fitzroy and one for himself. The King refused and the bodies of the Howard family, including that of Henry Fitzroy, were disinterred and reburied at St Michael’s Church in Framlingham. The tombs can still be seen there.

Contrast this with the funeral, 12 years later, of Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond, in July 1536. Henry was the illegitimate son of Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount, born in Essex in June 1519. In May 1536, Anne Boleyn had been executed and the King had almost immediately married Jane Seymour in the hope that she would produce a longed for heir. In July of that year, though, it has been suggested that Henry intended to legitimise the 17 year old Fitzroy and name him as heir to the English throne. The boy’s death was a devastating

Join The Volunteer Team At TADDS
t
As we come out of lockdown TADDS is already excited about our new opening date, but before we say a huge hello to our members, we need to focus in on some of the unsung hero’s of our group - our wonderful Volunteers. We will be holding a Volunteer Tea & Coffee Morning to welcome back our previous volunteers and also people new to volunteering.
t
Come along and find out more about us and the work we do within the community supporting people living with a dementia and their Carers; this could be as a volunteer within the group, helping people engage in activities, serving refreshments, or providing a listening ear to Carers - or you could support the work of the charity by providing telephone befriending, fundraising or being a TADDS Community Champion and helping us build our Dementia Friendly Community. Before lockdown at our Friday group we’d usually have a couple of hours of chat, activities and of course a cuppa or two. Activities ranged from crafts, to dancing and singing with an entertainer, puzzles, bingo or even a visit from Spencer the Therapy Dog or the Minidonks For Wellbeing.
Regular visits from the Minidonks are just one of the highlights of being involved in TADDS
In pre-covid times we’ve organised days out to the broads and the Bressingham Steam Museum, and Christmas lunches have always been fun to attend. We are hoping to resume this service as soon as it’s safe to do so. Most importantly for us, we always look to support the person with dementia, their main carer, family and family and friends. We will be at the Cloverfields Community Church on Friday 25th June from 10am until 12 noon. No appointment is necessary you can just drop in and find out more.

We have been loving seeing all the classes and clients coming back to the Charles Burrell Centre in May and June promises to see even more people popping in. The Burrell Buzz is back! Bingo is back on Wednesdays – arrive from 12.30pm for a 1pm kick off. Just £5 for 5 games! Community Day is in the diary and will be on Sunday 5th September this year. We have a Quiz Night at the end of June being hosted by Rotary in Thetford with all welcome to join in the fun. Our new Wellbeing Garden is slowly taking shape too and we hope it will become a quiet, tranquil space that you can all enjoy. Meetings are happening face to face again so if you need a space to hire please let us know. Last month we celebrated Polish Heritage Day with Anna and the team at the Polish Language School and a local lady – Hilary Codd Illustrations - completed a fabulous mural for the Burrell Shop. We love Thetford and its varied and vibrant communities and businesses! We are also welcoming back our community café this month! Tracy the manager at The Engine Room is raring to go! She has been trying new recipes for cakes and snacks and cannot wait to see you all. “Looking after people by cooking great food is what I do and I have missed it terribly during Covid. We have made some changes in the cooking area and have some changes planned for the seating area so we can make you all feel even more welcome and cosy” she told us. Of course we still ask that you think about Hands, Face & Space and wear your mask (unless you are exempt) whilst in the communal areas of the building. Hand sanitiser is available at all of our entrances too. Events are subject to Government guidelines at the time. We are so happy to have you back using the Centre. Stay safe and well! Billie Lawler

The art of summer
What better way to put ourselves in the mood for a sunny and safe summer than Christine Sanderson’s amazing papier mâché beach scene? It’s currently taking pride of place in the window of our King Street Shop. The detail Christine has included is
incredible – from the shells on the sandcastle to the seagull with his eye on Nan’s chips. Christine’s talent for creating runs in the family. “It was my wonderfully talented grandmother and aunt who taught and inspired me to knit and sew,” she says. And it’s no surprise Christine has so successfully turned her hand to our window display; she’s a former visual merchandiser for the Miss Selfridge chain, as well as independent clothes shops.
Want to know more about some of the amazing makers whose creations are on sale in the Leaping Hare shop? This summer, we’ll be hosting a series of “Meet the Maker” events, starting with Christine Sanderson on Saturday 19 June. She’ll be demonstrating her skills and answering questions about her work – plus there’ll be a free activity for younger children.
The answer is blowing in the wind

Thetford Open Gardens blossom once more
Music brings us together again
Local gardeners have been lovingly tending their plots in preparation for Thetford Open Gardens, on Sunday 6 June (11am-5pm) and Sunday 27 June (11am5pm). One of our gardens contains more than 40 types of rose and there’ll be a prize for anyone who can name at least 20 of them. There won’t be a raffle this year, but all tickets purchased (in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care) will be entered into a prize draw. Refreshments will be available too.
The Norfolk World Music Festival takes place Friday 30 July-Sunday 1 August at Burton Manor Barns in Southborough. The theme is “Umoja”, which means “togetherness” in Swahili and Zulu. The festival is giving a head start to the businesses of tomorrow: the age of LittlePreneurs scheme gives local makers their own stall at the festival, selling their creations.

Campaign To Reduce Single Use Products In Norfolk A campaign has been launched to help drive down single-use product and plastic waste by calling on people to swap2save. By making small everyday changes, like swapping a take-away drink in a plastic bottle for a reusable and refillable water bottle, people will be able to save their money and help to cut waste. l
The single-use items targeted by the campaign lead to 30,000 tonnes of waste annually in Norfolk, costing £3.47million to dispose of every year. Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: “We know what a huge burden single-use plastics and products place on the planet. With a global problem it can seem tough to know where to start to help make things better. This clever new campaign the team have devised will hopefully help us to think about some of the few small choices we make every day that cumulatively have the chance to make a really big difference. Before covid hit last year we were already trialling some new ideas at County Hall, and just by switching to reusable cups we were immediately able to cut the number of single-use cups”.
The campaign will highlight some simple swaps people can make to cut waste. Ideas include: - Swapping disposable razors for a bamboo or stainless one with replaceable blades - Switching from disposable wet wipes or cotton wool pads to a washable cotton flannel - For a snack swapping crisps in a plastic packet for popcorn popped at home - Swap shop-bought sandwiches for a homemade packed lunch - Swap buying bottles of water when out and about by using the new ‘Refill’ app For more information, and great swap ideas, visit: www.norfolkrecycles.com/swap2save

Thetford Cyclist’s ‘Freedom Ride’ f t t t f

A 75-year-old retired lawyer from Thetford is cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, raising funds for Anti-Slavery International. Simon John (pictured) hopes to raise £10,000 to help tackle modern slavery by cycling the 600 miles. Simon set off from England’s south-western tip on the 21st May, and is hoping to arrive in John O’ Groats 20 days later, on 10th June. He is in the process of giving more than 120 talks about modern slavery to students and community and faith groups during his cycle ride.
Mr John’s journey – dubbed the Freedom Ride – pays homage to the abolitionist Thomas Clarkson, who rode on horseback to towns up, down and across the UK, to raise awareness of the suffering that was then taking place in the transatlantic slave trade. The Anti-Slavery Society, established by Clarkson in 1839, continues to tackle slavery today, as Anti-Slavery International. More than 40 million people worldwide are believed to be in modern slavery, including 10 million children. It is estimated as many as 200,000 people in the UK live in modern slavery.
The Freedom Ride is part of a global event, Freedom Seat, which includes a later ride from coast-to-coast across the USA. Mr John has been cycling for Anti-Slavery International since 2018, when he completed the Prudential 100 ride in London. He also gives talks on modern slavery within the Amnesty International speaker network and as global secretary of the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery. To donate to Mr John’s Freedom Ride, visit: Gorse Motors March 2016_Layout 1 16/02/2016 08:02 justgiving.com/fundraising/freedomride2021
Mr John said: “I feel great outrage and sadness that millions upon millions of my brothers and sisters around the world are being held in abject misery. Many people don’t understand that slavery didn’t end in the 19th century, but is still pervasive today. What turns the knife in my side is that we all benefit from it, in one form: we enjoy slightly cheaper goods, from businesses that profit from Abbey Garage AD.qxp_Layout 14:36 Pag exploiting workers. We all have 1an17/07/2017 important role to play in stopping it.”

Womble 100 Continues
f il l f
r r
Thetford Wombles Sue and Mac MacDonald have continued with their Captain Sir Tom Moore Challenge, litter picking an hour a day across May until July 25th. In the first 30 days of their challenge, they’ve collected an astonishing 196 bags of litter from across the town. The Wombles have at times uncovered some really horrible examples of littering such as 120 full dog poo bags from the hedge behind the wall around Pike Lane car park. At the Brandon Road end of Canterbury Way, on arrival there didn’t seem to be too much litter, but this soon turned into being one of the worse hauls of the month which included a tyre, large metal road sign and over 7 bags of litter. Sue and Mac put out an appeal on social media for a Saturday morning Barnham Cross Common session. The Wombles were joined by Cllrs Terry Jermy and Stuart Terry, Jan, Ricky O’Connor and Alfie. Within an hour 18 bags of rubbish, a large rug, a swing frame and a table were collected. Sadly they also discovered a large amount of DIY rubbish.
You can follow Sue and Mac’s challenge on Sue’s Facebook page Sue MacDonald or Litter Free Thetford or Twitter #Womble100 To make a donation please visit: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ Trevor Hughes Wines Advert.qxp_Layout 11 11/11/2020 egaP 41:80 08:14 0202/1Pa suzanne-macdonald-1

Sue and Mac have been supported by a number of volunteers joining them to pick litter and many people contributing to their fundraising page. With 67 days to go the Wombles have increased their target to £1000, having met their initial target twice over. Speaking about their fundraising success Sue said, “Thanks to all you lovely generous people who have donated to our JustGiving page, we can’t thank you enough. This money will make a real difference to the town through supporting local wellbeing charities and being able to distribute litter picking equipment to individuals or groups who generously give their spare time to keep Thetford tidy.” If you would like to help on a Womble 100 litter pick please contact Sue for details.

Gardening Notes For June 2021

i r t t
Glorious June at last! It starts with the National Children’s Gardening Week, running to the 6th; do you have a potential junior assistant who doesn’t mind getting muddy? Then the 20th marks the longest day, bringing greater warmth and longer daylight hours and, with (hopefully) the retreat of the vile Covid, we should all have cause to be in a happier frame of mind. Perhaps treat yourself to a ticket for the Open Garden days on the 6th and 27th; they are on sale at the Leaping Hare but be aware that numbers are limited. If you set early potatoes, you should be able to harvest them this month; cooked with mint and served with the tail-end of the asparagus crop that truly is a feast of flavour. You can also have the freshest of salad with the thinnings from a row of lettuce and the radishes put in to mark the line of your parsnips; leave two or three radishes to flower and produce seed. The flowers make quite a pretty show and the pods (picked young and juicy) taste mildly of radish. Each plant produces dozens of pods and can be an attractive sight. It must be safe now to bring out tender plants – surely no more frosts! Hanging baskets can be set out with a quick trim to any leggy tendrils to encourage bushy growth; summer bedding can be put out after hardening off any half-hardy annuals you have been raising in the greenhouse. In the vegetable plot, it is time to get courgettes and sweet corn out. Outdoor tomatoes can be planted too if you think your area is free from blight.
are clean and you do not bring any spores in from outside. Our Covid training should make us all more aware of the risk of transferring infection!
As well as enjoying the flowers in your garden, you can share the pleasure indoors especially by picking sweet peas; not only is the scent better appreciated inside but the picking stimulates the plant to produce more flowers. Equally deadheading roses helps prolong flowering and taking out spent oriental poppies at the base of the stalk encourages fresh leaf growth. Hardy geraniums should be cut back when they finish flowering to get a second flush. At last there is the prospect of meeting again and the Thetford Garden and Allotment Club plan to hold the Summer Show in place of a talk on ‘club night’ – Thursday 24th July at the United Reformed Church. Our Chairman has sent out the schedule online but contact any committee member if you need further details; the emphasis is on sweet peas and roses as usual Now the sun is high in the sky, you may need to but with some vegetable and culinary classes. shade your greenhouse or protect any soft growth Setting up begins at 6.30, judging at 7.30 and the in some way; the glass can focus the heat and presentation of cups etc at 8.45. You are welcome shrivel up young growth. Indoor tomatoes will be to have a chat over a cup of tea while the judging racing away happily and you will need to nip out is in progress – a great chance to inhale those the side-shoots regularly, releasing that distinctive wonderful scents! Breckland Cats Protection
t
i t t f i f t
In a survey carried out by the British Veterinary Association last year, it was found that half of all vets treated animals for conditions relating to hot weather, such as heat stroke. With the summer coming, it is important to keep your cat cool. Cats with white fur, especially on their head, are in danger of getting skin cancer on ears and noses. You can use a sunblock on their most sensitive parts, but check with your vet first about a safe one to use. Try to keep them indoors between 10am and 3pm when the sun is hottest. Make sure there is lots of shade both indoors and outside providing bushes outside and boxes indoors. Keep curtains closed to keep your house cooler. Hydration is the key. Clean fresh drinking water is important. Place lots of bowls away from their food bowls and don’t use plastic bowls, use ceramic, glass or metal instead. Use large bowls with a big surface area and keep it topped up so that the cat doesn’t have to bend down too far. Cats like running water, and may prefer a water fountain. Keep lots of fans in different places indoors. You could fill a bottle with water and freeze it, and then place it wrapped in a towel in the cats bedding, making sure that they can get away from it and that the bottle doesn’t leak.
If you are having a barbecue, please remember than open flames are a risk to all animals. Don’t leave the barbecue unattended and cover the grill while it is cooling down. Don’t feed a cat from the barbecue as you don’t want them around that area which may encourage the cat to come back for more food. Keep onions, garlic and chives out of reach as they are toxic to cats. It might be best to set up a safe place for your cat indoors, as he / she might not appreciate having lots of visitors. For help or advice or it you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

Attentive readers will recall Paul Stancliffe saying that as a young birdwatcher, he knew that summer was here when he heard the soft purring song of the Turtle Dove. Sadly, during the last twenty five years we’ve lost a staggering 96% of our breeding population of this migratory dove. Changing agricultural practices are often cited as a main cause of decline but there are likely to be other drivers too, including hunting around the Mediterranean and unusually dry conditions reducing the amount of food available for them on migration and in their wintering areas. This year, BTO are working with RSPB and numerous other organisations to run a National Turtle Dove Survey to improve our understanding of where Turtle Doves still thrive in the UK, and how we can better help them. We’re lucky to live in an area that has long been a stronghold for the Turtle Dove. Even though numbers have declined dramatically, making them much harder to find now, it is still possible to see and hear Turtle Dove in Thetford Forest, with a bit of leg-work. Talking of leg-work, I’m involved in a campaign to increase awareness of the plight of Turtle Doves, and raise money for practical conservation work to improve Turtle Dove habitat in their UK breeding range. ‘Dove Step’ is the brain-child of Bury St Edmunds resident Jonny Rankin, and has featured a series of epic journeys through the UK range of the Turtle Dove and the European part of the route our birds take to and from Africa. Dove Step 1 was a 300-mile hike through the species’ core range in eastern England, from RSPB Lakenheath to RSPB Saltholme in Teeside. Dove Step 2 was an even more ambitious 700-mile journey, starting with a 25-mile kayak down the east coast of England, then 500 miles of cycling and 175 miles of walking across France. The third instalment saw Jonny and friends continuing to

track the migratory route of our Turtle Doves by walking 700 miles across Spain in 2017! In 2019, we cycled 162 miles from Thetford to Spurn, East Yorkshire, in a day. There Jonny completed a marathon the following day, before I cycled back to Thetford. After injury (Jonny) and illness (Nick), June 2021 is ‘Dove Step Rehab’: Jonny is running and walking 79 miles over 2 days, whilst I’m cycling the Norfolk county boundary in 1 day: 200 miles. Please support our efforts to help the conservation of these wonderful birds: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/dovesteprehab21 The Turtle Dove is a close relative of the more familiar Collared Dove but differs in being slightly smaller, having a small patch of bare red skin around the eye and a ‘tortoiseshell’ patterned back. Its voice is very different too. Collared dove utters a three note ‘Ooh-ooh-ooh’ call (think of a bored United fan: ‘U-ni-ted, U-ni-ted’) whilst the soft purring song of the Turtle Dove resembles that of a very loud, very happy cat! There is a video on the BTO website that will help you to identify Turtle Dove from Collared Dove: www.bto.org/about-birds/bird-id/668 Made to Measure 1/8th Advert 2020.qxp_Layout 1 11/0 Nick Moran, BTO

f t
Thetford Open Gardens event will bloom on two dates this year. Kindly organised by the Thetford Open Gardens team in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, this year’s Thetford Open Gardens promises to be twice the fun as it will be held over two dates. On Sunday, 6 June, a dozen gardens will be opening their gates to showcase various blooming beautiful early roses and summer flowers. Then on Sunday, 27 June, visitors will enjoy the same number of gardens when they open. Due to government guidelines, tickets will be limited, so those wanting to enjoy the variety of green spaces on offer are advised to get their tickets early. For those who want to enjoy a sweet treat or refreshment as they wander around the gardens, limited refreshments will be available this year, mainly in the form of take-away drinks and some of Sue’s delicious cake to take home with you. Tickets will cost £10 per person, and accompanied children go free. A joint ticket for both days costs £15 per person. Event passports are only available from the Everything Thetford shop in King Street. Telephone Leaping Hare on 01842 751975 or visit their website: www.leapinghare.org

"Didn't Seem Worth The Trip" Fly Tipper Landed With £300 Fine r
I
r
A fly tipper who thought taking rubbish to the local recycling centre wasn't "worth the trip" has been fined £300 after instead deciding to fly tip the waste by a garage block in Thetford. Investigations carried out by Breckland Council's Enforcement Officers, with support by Serco waste collection colleagues, found evidence in the fly tip that linked to a local resident. Although they had moved to a new house since the waste had been fly tipped, council officers were able to track down the culprit who confirmed that they were responsible for some of the items in what had become a large fly tip made by multiple fly tippers. When asked by Breckland Officers why they didn't use the local recycling centre, which was just one mile from their home, the culprit stated “It didn't seem worth the journey”.
f t t
Councillor Gordon Bambridge, Executive Member for Waste and Environment commented: "If anyone needs to dispose of household waste, then there are countless legal options available, however fly tipping is never acceptable. I hope this case sends a clear message that fly tipping is simply not ok and we will take action."
Councillor Susan Dowling, Ward Member for Thetford Priory added: “I am very pleased to see this latest prosecution. Fly tipping is a blight on our community and residents are fed up with it. Much of what is fly tipped can be taken to the local recycling centre, often for free, or for a small fee”. If you see a fly tip within Thetford, you can report it online using Breckland Council’s report it function. You can also report numerous other issues using the same link: www.breckland.gov.uk/reportit

Local residents in Thetford are being encouraged to join one of several monthly litter picking sessions in the town. The Norwich Road Residents Association and Cloverfield & The Willows Resident Associations have longstanding monthly litter picks that take place across their respective communities. Norwich Road regularly takes place on the first Saturday of the month, meeting at the Admirals Way shops. The litter pick for the Cloverfields community meets at the Cloverfield Church and takes place on a Friday and a Saturday from 10.30am, normally on the third Friday & Saturday of the month. From June, there will be a new regular litter pick taking place covering the town’s Burrell Ward. Locations will alternate each month between meeting at the Charles Burrell Centre at Staniforth Road and the Meet Up Cafe at Canon’s Walk. The first session takes place on Saturday 12th June from 10am - 12pm, meeting at CBC. The following month the meeting point will be Meet Up Cafe and then back to Charles Burrell Centre for August. For the sessions taking place at CBC, the Engine Room Cafe based at the Centre will be providing a free lunch for participants. At all of the litter picking sessions mentioned equipment will be provided but you can of course bring your own picker too.

Why We Love Home Composting i i t
i
f t
The last 12 months has seen a huge surge of interest in gardening and home composting. The Royal Horticultural Society reported a 500% increase in visitors to their website and in Norfolk, sales of compost bins hit their highest levels for over ten years. We asked people in Norfolk what they love about home composting. Anne Wiltshire is a Norfolk Master Composter volunteer. “Composting gives me a great feeling of satisfaction. Every time I add more organic matter into the compost bin, I notice how quickly the level has shrunk down. The smell and feel of freshly made compost is wonderful. I get free quality compost and I know exactly what ingredients have gone into making it!” Jamie Garcka is a first-time home composter. “My favourite bit is knowing that I'm helping to give back to the earth. That and getting a lot of joy from knowing there’s a whole eco system going on in there. The worms!”
You can also buy one and get another the same size at half price. For details of special offers and a step by step composting guide, including tips on what you can put in your bin visit: www.norfolkrecycles.com/home-compost

What A Carry On Have you ever heard of the term Portage?
l
f il
t i t r
A Portage is a path where items are regularly carried between bodies of water and more commonly it is the word used to describe the practice of carrying water craft or cargo over land, either around an obstacle in a river, or between two bodies of water. The word portage came into English language usage around the 15 th Century, from the French verb “porter “ (to carry) but the activity of carrying one’s boat was something our Iceni communities were equally familiar with. Similar to a coracle in design these lightweight paddle craft could be carried if the river was blocked by a fallen tree or maybe too shallow or because the direction of the journey meant crossing land to join a different stream or river. Where the Little Ouse and the Thet run though the town we have a few places where portage is needed, like the Coffee Mill Weir and the two Staunches. At Thetford River Group we often get asked for details of where these are and where to enter and exit the watercourse, so we have created a set of info maps to help our modern day kayakers and canoe paddlers enjoy our beautiful river. See below for further info or get in touch.

A few months later, during a visit to Sandringham Craft Show he got talking to a man selling old tools and told him that he wanted to collect tools. Dejay walked away from that conversation with his first chisel and on returning home created a wood carving image of a hare. Inspired by his first attempt he then went on to read about woodturning and joined the club in Bury St Edmunds. Once a month he would join the group to watch demos and exchange ideas. As his interest grew, he begged his mum Kelly to get him a lathe, his birthday and Christmas present of choice when he was 11! Kelly says she’s not surprised, ever since he was a baby he’s always loved tools. “I had a job to keep him away from dangerous tools, his Dad Darren died when he was 6 months old and was a carpenter by trade. I think it must be in his genes.” Armed with a woodturning tool set and hours of YouTube tutorials, Dejay started his woodturning journey. He managed 7 lessons with a woodturning tutor before the outbreak of covid meant he had to return to YouTube videos. His tutor gave him a list of people to watch, saying you must find the right person so you learn the right techniques. During this time Dejay discovered the Association of Woodturning Great Britain. Not deterred by his lack of experience, he joined their Zoom meetings twice a week, asking questions and sharing his work. “I like to try out different projects, when people say you won’t be able to make this, I want to

have a go to prove them wrong.” On one occasion when one of the members said Dejay wouldn’t be able to create a spiral twisted goblet until he was much older, he couldn’t resist the challenge and at the next meeting presented his first twisted spiral goblet, impressing the other members. The Chair of AWGB contacted Dejay earlier in the year and asked him to apply for the association’s prestigious award, the Ray Key Bursary. Ray Key was a professional woodturner who bequeathed a legacy award, open to woodturners of any age. In March Dejay was notified that he had been awarded a scholarship to go to the AWGB Seminar in September as one of 4 junior (U18 in the UK) members. Speaking about the award, AWGB Chair Paul Hannaby said, “The bursary is awarded to people who have the potential to become exceptional woodturners and would benefit by receiving tutoring and mentoring from professionals. The AWGB provide around £750 to be spent on receiving tuition from professional turners. The outcome of the bursary is not necessarily to produce a professional turner, but to give someone the opportunity to better themselves to become exceptional turners and be willing to pass on their skills at a later date. We believe that although Dejay is relatively young, he certainly has the makings of being a very special wood turner and a bursary award will set him off in the

right direction to achieve that.” Paul Hannaby has also offered to become Dejay's mentor. During the seminar 3 of his pieces will be submitted within the youth category. If his work is selected it will then become part of an international touring exhibition.
“
“I find woodturning relaxing, it’s almost like meditating for me, I just love it.” Dejay explained. Having an unusual hobby doesn’t worry Dejay, his friends ask him questions about his woodturning and Dejay says they think it’s cool, although he does talk about it all the time as it’s his passion which they don’t always enjoy! He once made a yew bowl with his older brother but says as his tools cost quite a lot, he looks after them and tends to do his wood turning by himself. Despite the ongoing covid situation curtailing Dejay’s lessons he says it’s been a blessing in disguise, through the AWGB Zoom meetings he has raised his profile internationally and without this his talent may have remained hidden.

Dejay’s favourite woods are cherry, for its unique colour, oak, yew and spalted beech. He’s been given samples from other wood turners to try out and local tree surgeons have also been generous. He has also experimented with resin and hama beads, inspired by YouTuber Andy Phillips. Going forward he is aiming to become a professional woodturner and encourage younger people to take up the craft, “It would be nice to get more people doing woodturning, I’d encourage anyone interested to get in touch with the Bury club. The AWGB has reduced the age range so that up and coming woodturners can be encouraged now.” Dejay sells his work through the Everything Thetford shop run by Leaping Hare and on his own Facebook and Instagram page, “I put everything back into my woodturning. To buy more tools and equipment.”

Give Yourself Some Love! It is time to make yourself feel good both inside and out. We have all been lacking in being able to have treatments and ‘hands on’ therapies over the winter months. Even though we haven’t had events or outings to look forward to it is still important to give yourself that feeling of wellbeing. A wonderful treatment to have is a pedicure. Our feet normally get treated without the respect they deserve. A lot of tension is carried in the feet.
READY TO SORT OUT YOUR HAIR Please call to make an appointment
A pedicure takes approximately an hour. Feet are soaked in a relaxing aromatherapy bath filled with pebbles. Followed by an exfoliation treatment, hard, dry skin removed, nails clipped and filed, cuticles trimmed and rounded off by a wonderful deeply relaxing foot and ankle massage. Some clients may wish to have a protein applied, or a polish or gel finish. This treatment is available to both men and women. What’s not to like!

Also, for the ultimate treatment it can be made into a luxury pedicure to include a hot paraffin wax dip, which is deeply hydrating and great for rheumatic joints. Please say when booking which you prefer as the paraffin wax takes a little longer. If feet are not really your thing, all the more reason to show them the love and care they deserve and then get those sandals on! Happy June. Active Body, Healthy Mind
t
f
t r r
f
Last month, in expressing the importance of mental well-being, I used the phrase “mental and physical health are equally important” to explain the need to treat them both in a similar way. However, it also provides a method to aid our mental health, and this is through physical activity. Exercise has had proven benefits for mental well-being, and according to the NHS, “regular exercise can boost your mood” which can alleviate the symptoms of depression and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. The Mental Health Charity Mind supports this, by stating physical activity can result in better sleep, happier moods and managing stress and anxiety. There are many different types of physical activity that are open to everyone, and they can vary in both intensity and styles to cater for everybody’s needs and preferences. Some common examples include running, cycling, swimming, team sports and regularly going to the gym, or even working out at home. Mr Watkins is an army veteran, and worked as a Physical Training Instructor for the British Army from 1990 to 1997. He says that “physical exercise benefits mental health in many ways because it
produces endorphins, which can help to focus and stimulate your mind.” Drawing from his own experiences, Mr Watkins goes on to say, “Depressive disorders during my military time and in ‘civvy street’ are being treated more widely with physical exercise. Having an exercise regime focuses your mind, gives you a sense of purpose, a sense of achievement and a great deal of positivity.” Feeling purposeful and focused can help to ease mental strain, reduce stress and decrease the frequency of low mood. Everyone is able to get active in some way, and it has been proven to benefit mental health and act as a form of relief and remedy for many. Sophie Watkins, Youth Voice

Life is starting to look good with so many places now able to open. It is the same with the U3A - our meetings are planned and speakers are looking forward to visiting us once again. We have had to book two meetings with Mark Webster speaking on the green sites of Thetford. We have been inundated with requests for seats. We are now unable to take any more. On 24th June we have a great afternoon to look forward to. Paul Adams will be getting our feet tapping with his Rock n Roll music. As this is the first meeting out of lockdown we have booked Chantelle to make our mouth’s water with her delicious snacks. We are hoping to have a party atmosphere to celebrate that the lockdown is over. It also means we will not have to limit our numbers so everyone is most welcome. Anne Fabien writes; “Please help our U3A. Our meetings and group meetings will be restarting. Now is the time to join the volunteers group by befriending new members or helping out with future events and much more”. Please call Anne on 01842 761506. 40 years ago the Humburger Inn opened in Earls Street offering all American takeaway hamburgers char-broiled on an open grill in the newly refurbished Dorans Corner complex just off the town’s market place. Every year, Citizens Advice help people with a wide range of energy issues - one of those issues is estimated billing. Inaccurate bills can result in customers paying too much or not enough, and can be stressful if you are on a tight budget. With a smart meter, you’ll receive an accurate, not estimated, bill – this means you only pay for what you use. Smart meters are being installed in homes across Great Britain at no extra cost, this is to replace traditional meters. Unlike traditional meters, a smart meter sends your meter readings directly to your energy supplier so you don’t have to.

The past month has seen the Charles Burrell Museum once more become a hive of activity. Our volunteers have returned to work in small groups and that has made a huge difference to the amount of work being completed. The outer tyre segment rings on the back wheels of our Showmans Engine, Queen Mary, have now been welded in place and work has begun to bolt the final centre ring of segments in place. Once again this is precision work, and it's not a job to be rushed, but we are very lucky to have experienced and talented volunteers to tackle this task as we couldn’t undertake it without them! Queen Mary is starting to look quite impressive in her ’new shoes’ and quite a few inches taller to boot. As this work Interviews have been conducted with both myself is nearing the end, we have now booked the boiler and our two younger volunteers for a brand-new inspector to visit us and as Queen Mary has now promotional film and sound recordists have also been out of steam for almost two years having been in the Museum for a separate project. I also various works completed, we are quietly confident have the pleasure of being interviewed by Radio that she will pass... fingers crossed! The boiler Norfolk which is a first for me! Club Appeals For Help i
r
t f i
Thetford has one of the oldest Cricket Clubs in the county, founded in the late 19th century. Today it is a thriving club with over 200 members. Like so many organisations the current covid pandemic has affected the club, most recently with the discovery that their 10 year old second hand roller had stopped working. Despite attempts to get it repaired the roller is no longer viable leaving the club without a much needed piece of kit. The only way to the maintain the high standard of Thetford cricket ground is with a roller. To replace the roller they are now looking to raise £12,000. The club fears it will be moved down the leagues due to inadequate facilities and have had to use an expensive hire roller so far.
Games Galore For New Events Business Tiger Events East Anglia is a new company set up in Thetford by owner of Tiger Fitness, Richard Taylor and his partner Katrina Wallace. They both co-own and operate Tiger Tuck Shop which started in May 2020 and will be offering Garden Games, Sweet Cart and a gorgeous Flower Wall back drop as part of Tiger Events.

Thetford Cricket Club has 3 Senior teams and 4 Junior teams. With over 50 Junior members, this year they have launched Thetford Cricket Youth Academy for U11, U13 and U15 age groups. They also cater for younger children through the All Stars (ages 5-8) and ECB Dynamos programme (ages 8-11). So far the club has raised almost half of the money they need, with the generous help of 47 donors. Although the club have received a couple of very generous donations most have been below £50, showing that every pound really does count. The club are now appealing to the community to help them raise the final amount to enable them to purchase the new roller this season. To donate please visit: gf.me/u/zpwgpx For more information about Thetford Cricket Club please visit: www.Thetford.play-cricket.com or email: Thetfordcricket@outlook.com

Thetford Bulldogs
f f
Thetford Bulldogs was founded in 1995 and we pride ourselves on offering children of all ages an opportunity to play a good standard of football. Thetford Bulldogs is more than just a football club, we are one big community footballing family. This family either starts in our training school, which is for children 4 – 6 years old or with our Wildcats Centre, which is for girls aged 5 – 11. The children then transfer from these training centres to form a team, including the new under 7’s boys team or under 10’s & 11’s girls teams. All Thetford Bulldog coaches have been FA Level one qualified and fully DBS checked. You can have full confidence your child is in good hands.
Congratulations to the U12 girls who won their Vase Cup Final in May 3 - 2 against Bure Valley Leopards
e s
Thetford Bulldogs are currently looking to add players to their current under 7’s, 10’s, 14’s and ladies teams. Girls looking to be part of our under 10’s girls team need to be aged 8 by 31st August 2021 or 10 after 1st September 2021. For the under 11’s girls team, girls need to be aged 10 by 31st August 2021 or 11 after 1st September 2021.

Thetford Bulldogs achieved their FA Chartered Standard in 2002 and have also been awarded the FA Development Charter Standard Award. They have many players who also train in one of the local academies, whether this be Norwich, Ipswich or Cambridge United. The demand for girls and ladies football has never been so big and is at a record high. Thetford Bulldogs is one of only four Wildcats centres operating in the local area.
