Recycling Raises Funds For East Anglian Air Ambulance
t
Norfolk County Council’s reuse shops are celebrating their partnership with the East Anglian Air Ambulance as the total raised for the charity in the 14 reuse shops hits £21,178.
t t r t
Despite many of the reuse shops having to close their doors at times throughout the last year, due to Covid 19 restrictions, they have continued to raise money during this period, with £1,700 going to the East Anglian Air Ambulance as a result.
t t t
I
t
r r
The money was presented to the East Anglian Air Ambulance’s volunteers when they visited Thetford recycling centre at the end of June. Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support the incredible work the Air Ambulance does, and I’m really proud of all the work that has been put in by our reuse shops to raise this money. The last year has hit everyone hard, and the fact our shops have raised money despite all the other challenges they’ve faced during the pandemic shows just how much work and effort is put in by the teams running them”. In April 2018 the East Anglian Air Ambulance was named the chosen charity of Norfolk County Council’s reuse shops and since then the shops have been donating a portion of their income to the Air Ambulance, raising £9,470 in 2018/19, £10,000 in 2019/20 and £1,708 in 2020/21. Zoe Harris, Community Fundraiser at the East Anglian Air Ambulance, said, “Our partnership with Norfolk County Council’s reuse shops has gone from strength to strength and we are delighted that the reuse shops are continuing to raise crucial funds for us especially during the recent challenging times. We wouldn’t be able to provide our life-saving service without support of partnerships like this. We were delighted to visit at the reuse shop in Thetford to talk to customers about the work the EAAA does.”
(L to R) Zoe Harris - Community Fundraiser EAA, Martina Gleason - NCC Waste Reduction Officer, David Fairweather Recycling Adviser and David Lake - Contracts Manager
Reuse shops play an important role in cutting waste as each reuse shop stops on average 100 tonnes of reusable items being thrown away every year. In addition to the other four new shops that opened in 2019 at Wells-next-the-Sea, Bergh Apton, Heacham and Wereham, the reuse shops at Dereham and Caister recycling centres have doubled in size. When it opens later this year the reuse shop at the new Norwich North recycling centre will be the largest in the county. The County Council’s reuse shops welcome donations of good quality second hand pieces and sell these on at bargain car boot prices. Helping to give things a new home reduces the amount of unwanted items going to waste and the income from sales in the shops helps to offset the cost of providing the recycling centre service. For more information on Thetford Recycling Centre please visit: https://bit.ly/3qodeIF
Norse Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) run 19 of Norfolk’s 20 recycling centres.
t
t
Dave Newell, Director of NEWS, said: “At Norse we are delighted to be able to do our part helping to protect the environment by preventing perfectly good, useable items going to waste, while also helping to raise vital funds for such a deserving charity. Add to that, we are also offering people the chance to pick up a bargain and it’s a win-win all round.”

Following a difficult start to 2021, Red Rooster Festival is hugely excited to be bringing back live music this Summer. Set amongst 300 acres of the historical private gardens and rolling parkland of Euston Hall in Suffolk, it is the perfect setting for weekend get-togethers, great soul food, and a general feel good atmosphere. But most of all, it is about the long-awaited return of fantastic live music in an outdoor setting. And the Bank Holiday Monday means time to recover or travel home. You’ll be in for a treat for the ears, with performances from Richard Hawley, Jade Bird, Songhoy Blues, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, Ida Mae, Ian Siegal, Little Barrie and many more. With the surreal year or so we’ve all had, there’s never been a better time to get back to your roots. We’ve lined up celebrity survival expert Will Lord, who will be presenting his Prehistoric Experiences. The team at Back to Wilderness will also be joining us for running workshops. The Vintage Hot Rod Association will be on hand to show off some of their incredible pre-1949 American cars.

Home Security Crime Prevention

With the start of warm weather, we often see an increase in opportunists taking advantage of doors and windows being left open. This coupled with the easing of pandemic restrictions and our being able to travel further afield I would like to take the opportunity this month to talk about crime prevention and home security. Being burgled can be a traumatic experience, often leaving people feeling violated and unsafe in their own home. However, as the majority of burglaries are opportunist in nature as opposed to being planned, there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of it happening to you. When it comes to home security people often think this only applies to doors and windows, however, the most effective security consists of a variety of measures, creating layers of security around your home to deter, defend and detect any intruders. Starting with the perimeter of your property by keeping front perimeters at no more than 1 metre high this will allow for natural surveillance from neighbours or passers-by while rear perimeters should ideally be at least 1.8 metres high to deter access from neighbouring properties. Moving on to garden areas ensure that there is nothing outside your property such as tools, bricks or ornaments which could be used to force entry while a gravel driveway is noisy to walk on and can act as a deterrent. Sheds and garages should always be kept secure and lighting is also a good deterrent; dusk to dawn lighting can illuminate entry points, deter burglars and provide a means of you being able to safely investigate suspicious noises. All external doors, including front and rear doors, patio and balcony doors and integral garage doors should have robust and secure locking mechanisms. Keep your doors locked and remove the key at all times – even when you are at home. If the doors are locked, make sure you have an exit plan in the event of an emergency.
Never leave a door insecure to avoid having to get up to let family members have access – use a key safe, and never hide a spare key outside. Burglars know all the usual hiding places! Fit a door chain and door viewer and use it each time you open the door. As with doors, keep all windows secure at all times – even if you are at home. Never leave a downstairs or accessible window open.
t
t
Alarms and CCTV can also add an extra layer of security to your home. Don’t use dummy systems and make sure you set the alarm every time the house is empty and at night if possible. Another good tip is to try to make you home look occupied. Use lights and a radio – and when using lights on timers do this on lights that would normally be used. An only light on in the landing could be an indication that the house is unoccupied. Finally, don’t keep large quantities of cash in the home and make an inventory, take photographs and use a permanent marker or UV pen to add your postcode to valuable items.

We really enjoyed our first “Meet the Makers” event. Judging from the feedback we received, so did you! These Covid-safe, face-to-face events give you a chance to chat to some of the very talented makers whose creations we sell in our shop. Next up is the talented Caroline King of Stepping Stones Emporium and Crafty Emporium, who joins us on Saturday 24 July between 11am and 2pm. With more than 20 years’ hands-on beauty therapy experience and having spent
the past four years establishing Stepping Stones and developing a product range, she has oodles to tell you. Caroline’s bespoke range includes bath bombs, home fragrance, artisan soaps and much more. All her handcrafted products are vegan and eco-friendly and made using luxury ingredients that the whole family can use. Caroline (pictured above) will also have a “guess the fragrance” activity – how many will you recognise?

Applications Open Now To Join Thetford Academy Thetford Academy is a comprehensive community 11-18 school which balances high academic and behavioural expectations with a caring and personalised approach.
Thetford Academy on Croxton Road, Thetford
The academy boasts some of the most modern facilities in the county. We are committed to pursuing high academic standards and providing a broad, rich curriculum designed not only to prepare pupils for employment, but also to enable them to become rounded global citizens. The foundation to this is a resolute commitment to upholding high standards of conduct. Thetford Academy is a calm, safe school and our families can expect their children to learn in a purposeful, disruption free environment. Although we are a large school we ensure each child is catered for as an individual. There is a wide network of support staff to meet each child’s needs. There are numerous opportunities for pupil participation and leadership and Thetford Academy is part of a nationally recognised anti-bullying programme.
t
We also welcome our pupils into a range of cultural pursuits in sports, crafts and the creative arts. We achieve all of this by teaching our pupils to develop a set of values and habits that allow them to contribute to our community in Thetford, and beyond. Thetford pupils have visited locations as diverse as India and the USA and regularly participate in sporting and artistic events. This means that we teach our pupils to be polite, considerate, hardworking and disciplined. The Thetford Academy is such a special place and the right place for your child to learn for their future.

Free School Meals Summer Support Food vouchers for children eligible for free school meals will continue into the summer holidays after Norfolk County Council received additional Covid support funding from the Government. I i t t f

It means the vouchers, which are worth £15 per child per week, will be provided over the six-week summer break, supporting around 27,000 children in the county. Schools and colleges will be able to order vouchers worth £90 each on behalf of all registered eligible. The vouchers are available to families in receipt of certain benefits whose children would normally receive free school meals during term time. These children can also benefit from activities and food over the holidays, via the council’s Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme. Cllr John Fisher, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “We welcome this extension of Government funding to help families facing greater hardship as the economy recovers following the Covid pandemic. Schools can order the food vouchers for pupils using an online service. Families can then either redeem their vouchers via an online code or receive a printed voucher by post, collection or delivery if they don’t have internet access. Those families who do not receive free school meals but who are struggling can contact Norfolk Assistance Scheme (NAS) for support. The scheme can help people who have been furloughed, are on reduced hours or have been made redundant because of the pandemic. NAS can support with food, paying bills and money for essentials for families struggling to meet everyday needs. It can also help with household items like white goods or beds. The support is for two weeks to begin with but anyone requiring more long-term help can work with NAS to access further support. To find out more and apply visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/nas Children are eligible for the vouchers if their family receives one of the benefits listed below: Universal Credit - with an annual earned income of no more than £7,400 after tax Income Support Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for the four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit) Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual gross income of no more than £16,190 Children in Reception, Year One and Year Two who receive Universal Infant Free School Meals are not eligible as part of the scheme, unless they have registered their eligibility for pupil premium funding. Gardening Notes For July l
t
t t
t t t r
l t t
After a dry early Spring and then a very cold frosty late Spring at last the weather has settled and the early plantings which were reluctant to grow are now flourishing! Whilst everything is growing well it’s good to be on the look out for pests and diseases which are also prevalent at this time of the year. Aphids, greenfly and blackfly can be a nuisance particularly on Broad Beans but they provide food for other beneficial insects. Pinching the soft tops out of Broad Bean plants does discourage blackfly as they prefer more tender foliage! Spraying with an organic soft soap spray helps as does wiping the aphids off the stems of affected plants with a finger and thumb. Successive sowings of lettuce and radish are helpful at plugging gaps in the vegetable garden at this time and even a late sowing of Dwarf French beans is possible if one chooses the correct variety, Dior being one, they can crop in as little as seven weeks. The nitrogen fixing roots also add fertility to the soil.
Foxgloves are particulary beneficial for bees
The RSPB have a campaign to invite nature to your doorstep. Whatever size of outside space one has be it a balcony, courtyard or garden it can still be used to encourage wildlife. Plants that are easy to grow and will greatly benefit bees include Lavender, Foxgloves, Marjoram, single hardy Geraniums and Nepeta (Cat Mint). For a small courtyard or balcony the plants can be planted in pots but these will need regular watering in dry spells as, unlike plants in the soil, they cannot seek water in the earth. The bees then do a great service for us gardeners by pollinating our flowers, fruit and vegetables! Although we like our gardens to look tidy, it is still possible to encourage wildlife by leaving a small pile of leaves or old logs in a quiet corner of the garden. A log in a damp corner is perfect for beetles. Birds can be encouraged into the garden by having a bird feeder and a shallow dish for the birds to bathe in. I’ve been lucky to see a hedgehog regularly in my own garden and as well as a welcome sight I’m very grateful for all the slugs it eats!
Harvesting is a pleasant pastime and picking beans and courgettes regularly encourages more to form. Courgettes are best harvested before they become the size of marrows which can seem to happen overnight! A summer delight is the harvesting and consuming of soft fruit such as raspberries, strawberries and gooseberries. Summer Pudding made with the fruits and served with cream is a treat which really brings out the flavour of fresh fruit and who can resist eating a warm strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or cane? July is a good month to give the lawn a summer feed, this is best applied before With Club activities halted by Covid we are hoping expected rain to negate the need for watering to hold a social evening on 29th July at the United the feed in with a hosepipe. Any newly planted Reformed Church, Covid rules permitting, to touch shrubs, trees and pots will need to be regularly base with members and discuss plans for future. watered until they1/8are established 1 particularly Betts of Brandon AD.qxp_Layout 09/04/2019 16:38 through dry spells. The Biodiversity Crisis In Thetford At the end of April folk in Thetford were shocked and devastated to discover that a section of Joe Blunt's Lane had been destroyed.

Beautiful, ancient trees have been torn down and undergrowth ripped out. This area is special to so many in Thetford. A piece of nature and an area of peace in the town; where people walk their dogs and children have played for generations. Not only is this destruction of wild spaces in direct conflict with the fact we are in a climate and biodiversity crisis, this also took place during the breeding season, causing undoubted disruption and destruction to the local breeding birds and wildlife in the area. If you would like to work together to protect the precious trees and green spaces of Thetford please visit ‘Save Joe Blunt’s Trees!’ Facebook page or email; xrthetford@gmail.com. We need more people in the town on board and helping to protect our natural spaces. As well as getting involved with local planning applications, tree preservation orders and mowing regimes you can also help our local wildlife by making your garden somewhere that birds can

collect food for their young and take a bath, hedgehogs can find solitude and bees can collect nectar. Digging up trees and putting down plastic grass are the worst things we can do in the face of a biodiversity crisis so plant some wildflowers, let your grass grow and welcome the natural world to your doorstep!

Mow Change!

The What’s Under Your Feet? project, supported by EDF Energy, was designed to harness the power of school-aged citizen scientists to help us learn more about the UK’s soil invertebrate communities. Surprisingly little was known about how factors such as soil characteristics and climate influence their abundance.
f
f
j r
t i
These mini-beasts play important roles in nutrient cycling, the development of soil structure, food webs and even climate regulation, so there are many reasons we need to know more about them. For the birds that share our gardens, parks and playing fields, soil invertebrates are an essential food source. A key finding of the 3-year study was that dry summer weather may be putting some of our favourite bird species at risk, as it triggers a significant drop in the availability of one of the most familiar soil invertebrates – earthworms – close to the soil surface during the breeding season. If, like mine, your garden or nearby green space receives regular visits from families of Blackbirds, you will have witnessed first-hand just how many earthworms these hungry mouths require!
A young Blackbird finds a Cinnabar moth in a less-mowed lawn
Longer grass and other vegetation helps to retain moisture near the surface. This creates a damper microclimate by providing more shade and more protection against the drying effects of the wind. If you have a lawn, you can help the birds by leaving longer gaps between mows, particularly during hot, dry spells. We should also all get behind local Council’s efforts to leave some parts of our local green spaces unmown. Not only does this help keep the soil moist but if left long enough, wild flowers will spring up, providing food for other invertebrates, including bees and butterflies. The flowers themselves are often spectacular too, such as the wonderful Bee Orchids that appeared behind the Breckland Leisure Centre earlier this summer. Sadly many of those plants did end up getting cut – against the instruction of the landowner to the grounds maintenance subcontractor – but a plan is now in place to ensure that they are properly protected if they reappear next year.

Meet Dale And Trev The Terrrier f l I i r
Gardening and landscaping has been a passion for Dale Parker since he left school. He has been an established gardener and tree surgeon since 1989. “When I left school, I worked for a local landscaping company for almost 3 years where I gained a vast amount of experience. Over the years I have obtained a wide range of knowledge in all areas of gardening including landscaping and tree surgery. I am incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about my work and this was the reason I decided to pursue this as a career.” Dale set up D&T Landscaping and Tree Surgery as he wanted to provide a more personal service and to work for himself. The business name of D & T Landscaping & Tree Surgery was an easy decision for Dale as he has an incredibly friendly and well-behaved border terrier named Trev who goes everywhere with him. “My customers adore him and I felt that Trev deserved a well-earned place in my company. Look out for Trev in my social media as he does like to get in the pictures!”

Dale started his business advertising in local parish magazines and was soon up and running. “I am proud to say that I have gained some very loyal, long term customers who have stayed with me for almost 32 years. It's very nice to know that these customers will only have me undertake any work in their gardens for them. Due to the volume of business, over the years I have employed full time, competent and trusted members of staff who I make sure are fully vetted.”

July is a month of good news and celebration for Thetford & District Dementia Support Group and officially we’re back!!! After what feels like the longest 15 months in history, we finally restarted our group for Carers and people living with a form of dementia at Cloverfields Community Church, on Friday 2nd July at 10am. We are so pleased to welcome group members back and to also welcome new faces, who we can support in their own personal journeys. If you have never been before just turn up, you don’t need a referral from your health care professional to attend, but you do need to have a dementia or be in the process of getting a diagnosis. We have a large car park which is free and the venue is suitable for wheelchair users. July is also TADDS 7th birthday and we have an event planned for this too. It is interesting to reflect on how far we have come in 7 years, and how much our group and grown and changed. For me it has at times been filled with many emotions, sometimes all in one group session, but I am very proud of what we have achieved and how far the group has come, as well as grateful for the support that has been so willingly given from individuals, volunteers and the local community.
Our volunteer coffee morning which was held in June welcomed back our group volunteers, but also brought new faces to our group, who have offered to support our group members.
t
It’s still not too late to volunteer, so if you would like more information please contact us at: taddsbefriending@hotmail.com We are very much looking forward to our renewed group meet ups, and to seeing friends old and new, pop in and visit us soon. The horse trough on Thetford Market Place was erected in memory of Cornell Fison, it is about to be converted so it can be used as a water bottle refill station by Thetford Town Council
chairman of the Thetford Local Board of Health. This came to a head in 1868 when Cornell sent a letter to the Medical department of the Privy Council saying that ‘for the last 7 or 8 months, fever of various kinds have been prevalent in this place. Since the hot weather scarlet fever has been epidemic to a fearful extent and the number of deaths among children very large’. Fison was interested in education both for children and adults. He became one of the trustees of Sir Joseph Williamson’s Charity and President of the town’s Mechanic Institute (the building now occupied by the Royal British Legion on the Market Place). Following the opening of the new Board School (now Norwich Road Academy), he threw a party for 900 children at Ford Place. He also supported other educational establishments nearby. The Fison family loaned decorated lighters for the annual Sunday school outings in the 1880 – 90s. The Lighters left from the town bridge full of excited children, heading towards Two Mile Bottom common or Santon Downham for a picnic and afternoon of games.
was draped in black, and the town’s shops closed during the funeral. The procession from Ford Place, numbered around 500 people and was said to be almost a mile long. Mourners included the Mayor, members of the Corporation, family, friends, representatives from the family business, tradesmen and servants. By the time of Cornell’s death at the age of 86, James Fison & Sons had grown to have premises in Ipswich, Stowmarket, Bradford and Greenholme. The portrait of Cornell Fison is thought to have been commissioned by the Corporation of Thetford shortly after his death as a memorial. It is one of 4 portraits of former Mayors in Thetford’s Civic Collection. Cornell Henry Fison followed in his father’s footsteps both as the head of the family business, politically and by supporting causes close to his heart. He appears in the 1861 census as the married head of the household working as a merchant employing 90 men, 16 boys and 6 women. Living with his wife, 3 sons, a visitor and 4 servants. He became one of the first Norfolk County Councillors in 1889. He purchased Kings House in 1859 and lived there until he moved to Ford Place in 1886. In 1893 he gave the carved reredos behind the alter to St Peters Church. The brass lectern in the Church was created as a memorial to him. After his death in 1895 Kings House was administered by the trustees of his will – we know that Henry Fison Killick retired there at the end of the 19th century, before Kings House was purchased by GW Staniforth in the 1920s. Walter Cornell, 3rd son of Cornell Henry became Mayor in 1902. He bequeathed the Mayor’s chain to Thetford after the coronation of Edward VII in August of that year. A newspaper article at the time said Thetford was the only Borough represented in Westminster Abbey without a chain. The same article stated that the previous chain was believed to have been buried in a garden by a former Mayor during the Napoleonic threat. In 1895 the business was split into two, James Fison and Sons and Joseph Image: Thetford Town Fison and Co. During Council WW1 Fison’s helped to make explosives before being purchased by Edward Packard and Co in 1919 and renamed Packard and James Fison (Thetford) in 1929.
Cornell Fison’s obituary was posted in the Ipswich Journal and Bury Post amongst others. It stated that he was one of the town’s ‘oldest and most respected inhabitants’ and that ‘no really deserving object sought his aid in vain’. He financially supported the Wesleyan Chapel (now Thetford Methodist Church), covering the cost of renovations. We were delighted recently when Mark Webster, the Countryside and Planning Officer for Thetford Town Council agreed to be our Guest Speaker, informing us about the green sites in Thetford. We had to limit numbers due to Covid regulations but as we were inundated with requests for seats Mark kindly agreed to visit us the following week to repeat his talk. If any groups are looking for a speaker I thoroughly recommend Mark. He told us so much about places and woods that most of us were not even aware of. It was such an interesting presentation!

Breckland Cats Protection t

Cats are a solitary species and may become territorial when other cats come into an area that was once exclusively theirs. In general, they will avoid confrontation and only fight as a last resort, but if they do end up in a scuffle, a cat may get bitten. Cats have a lot of bacteria in their mouths which can be injected under the skin by their teeth and this can lead to an infection. Cats are most often bitten on the head, tail or limbs. It may be obvious that your cat has been bitten, you may have heard cats fighting, see your cat limping if they have been bitten on a limb, or even be able to see the puncture wounds from another cat’s teeth. However, sometimes the injuries are not as easily apparent as the wounds can heal There are some ways you may be able to reduce over very quickly. This leaves the bacteria trapped under the skin and after a couple of days the the number of fights your cat gets into. Entire cats wound may develop into an abscess, which is a tend to be particularly territorial, especially males, so getting your cat neutered may reduce the swelling filled with pus. Thetford’s Mayoress, Corinne Brindle, helping out at the Burrell Ward community litter pick in June
t
Councillor Terry Jermy said; “We all know that littering and fly-tipping are major concerns for local residents. As well as being a blight on the community, there are environmental risks too with littering and wildlife can often be harmed. During Saturday’s session we managed to clear 10 large bags full of rubbish from the area plus some dumped pillows and duvets from the forest”.
t r
The new litter pick will take place on the second Saturday of every month, starting at 10am. It will alternate between meeting at Charles Burrell Centre and the Redcastle Community Centre to cover the two sides of the Burrell Ward. July’s session will meet at Canons Walk on Saturday 10th July at 10am. All equipment is provided but if people have their own litter pickers then they are encouraged to bring them along. Those attending each month are invited to stay behind for a free lunch which has been sponsored by the Engine Room Café and Meet Up Café. Councillor Chris Harvey added; “I am very grateful that the two organisations have offered to provide lunch for those helping out. As well as doing their bit to keep the community tidy it is nice to be able to thank those that have helped and it makes it a more social occasion for volunteers”. Having begun our 100 consecutive days of litter picking challenge back in April we are now in the last third, which is excellent news for us as we both have full-time jobs, other local obligations and a large dog to take care of, so fitting in one hour every day is a big commitment. During the week we have tried to be up early and take full advantage of the brilliant run of weather we have been having. Many of you are also early birds and may have seen us at various locations around the town. We are always happy to hear the toot of a car horn or a shout out of support. We have arranged several group picks which have resulted in large hauls of litter being collected and many incidents of fly tipping reported to the local authorities for removal. The wooded area at the A11 end of the London Road was particularly bad, 34 bags of litter were collected by just 11 volunteers. For us and we are sure many others, it is particularly frustrating when we find litter dropped so close to a bin, this discarded rubbish then becomes everyone else’s problem. What is interesting is what some people would not regard as littering, such as dropping a cigarette butt or fly tipping green garden waste. The latter is nearly always not just grass cuttings, there could be a little rubble from a DIY job or some old children’s toys to a full wardrobe of clothing! All of this could have been taken to the local recycling centre and disposed of mostly for free.
Sue and Mac have reached 78 days in their Womble 100 litter picking challenge across Thetford
through the Men’s Shed and Art for Wellbeing projects. Thanks to everyone for your support so far. To donate please visit: www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/suzanne-macdonald-1

Past & Present
The waterworks on Mundford Road opened in 1877 in response to concerns about sanitary conditions in Thetford. Water was drawn from a deep well at the site and was lifted to a brick service reservoir which had a capacity of 220,000 gallons on the outskirts of the town. Today Mundford Road is a busy industrial area and one of the main routes into the town from the Thetford Bypass. Factory units have built up on the left hand side although the tree remains on the right. High Sheriff Visits Thetford June was quite a month for all at the Charles Burrell Centre – more tenants and clients returned, work started on further improvements to the site and we hosted our first Community Lunch! t i i

The Big Lunch is an annual event created by the Eden Project. It aims to help get local people connecting with one another. We decided to get involved this year and although we had to remain very socially distanced we did manage to make it happen with a visit from the High Sherriff of Norfolk as well! We were honoured to host Dr Michael Gurney and give him a tour of the Centre. He stayed for lunch and chats with tenants, visitors and staff to get an idea of what we do. He loved the community aspect of all that happens at the centre and how welcoming the atmosphere was even given the covid restrictions. We are planning a series of Community Lunches over this year and we hope to welcome as many of you as we can to them. Tracy our Engine Room Café manager has been working behind the scenes to totally transform the café and its kitchen. Our maintenance crew have been busy with decorating – we can’t wait for you all to experience the new look new feel café! Keep an eye on our social media for details on an official re-opening. We were busy preparing for Open Gardens in June – recreating the sky garden on our spiral staircase, getting in tombola prizes, deciding on the refreshments we would offer. With all proceeds from the day going to St Nicholas Hospice we can’t wait to hear from the organisers how much was raised! In July we look forward to welcoming more of you back to the centre and have a Rotary Quiz booked in the main hall on Friday 30th July – tickets are available from Leaping Hare. It’ll be fun and our Quizmaster has been busy creating some new rounds as well.
(L to R) Cllr Roy Brame, Nik Chapman, Jo Pearson and the High Sheriff, Dr Michael Gurney
Although always sad to see a tenant go, we do love to see them grow, expand and fly the CBC nest when they are ready. We are very happy to say that our lovely friends at Thetford Foodbank have now opened at their fabulous new premises with all the distribution, sorting and client activity taking place under one large roof for them. And this means that we have a few rooms available for rent! Get in touch to see how inexpensive starting your new venture could be! Lastly don’t forget to pop Sunday 5th September on your diary for Community Day! We have so many fun things booked in already – we can’t wait!

It is estimated that more than 90% of the world’s population is affected by acne at some point in their lives. Although, Acne is more commonly associated with teenagers, it actually affects many in adult life on and off for many years. It may be classed as a skin disorder but it has also been linked to both emotional and psychological problems, such as low self esteem and depression. It effects women and men of all ages and in adults can be really painful. Many causes can be linked to hormones, stress, diet, health and lifestyle and skin sensitivity. Using the wrong products can worsen the condition. Depending on the severity, it may be advisable to seek professional medical guidance to ensure the correct treatment for the seriousness of the problem. In the skincare salon, we can offer treatments to exfoliate, help remove excess sebum, calm the skin if inflamed and create a customised homecare routine. Using topical products helps boost exfoliation, stops the build up of dead skin cells and reduces the chance of scarring. We have also found the use of our Intense Pulse Light has been extremely effective at helping to treat acne and reduce scarring by encouraging the production of the skin’s own collagen. regards, 1 24/01/2020 09:11 Pa Ear Irrigation 1/8Kindest Ad.qxp_Layout aP 11:90 Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Gold Award For Local Agent
f i t l l t i
l
Lawsons Estate Agents have just won The British Property Award for Thetford. Their team performed outstandingly throughout the extensive judging period, which focused on customer service levels. Lawsons Estate Agents have now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year. The British Property Awards provide agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition. Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with our accolade, which acts as a beacon to highlight these attributes to their local marketplace. The British Property Awards are one of the most inclusive estate agency awards providers as they do not charge to enter. This has enabled their award to be structured in a manner that ensures maximum participation, on average judging over 90% of agents that meet their minimum criteria on a local level.
The judging criteria is periods to ensure that agents have been rigorously and fairly judged. Robert McLean from The British Property Awards said, “Our awards have been specifically designed to be attainable to all agents, removing common barriers to entry, to ensure that we have the most inclusive awards. Our awards are designed to remove any opportunity for bias or manipulation. If an agent wins one of our awards, it is simply down to the fantastic customer service levels that they have demonstrated across a prolonged period of time.”
Matt Lawson Managing Director of Lawsons said, “I am over the moon for the guys in the office that they have won this award and for the 4th time in a row, I know how much hard work they put in every day and this award just proves it. On The Road To Reopening! It's been a busy month in the Charles Burrell Museum once again, the ongoing maintenance has continued along with work on our engines. The good news is that our Queen Mary’s tyres are now completed after 10 months of work, and she is ready to roll once again! The bad news however is that after a visit from the boiler inspector last week, there is still a bit of work to be done before she passes her boiler test. It's disappointing but typical of our Mary who is contrary at the best of times! We should be rescheduling another test in a few weeks' time when the work is done. The other bad news from this visit is that, as we expected, Mac our Road Roller needs a new firebox. The one she currently has is original and dates to 1927 so no one was shocked by this news and plans were already underway for a new fundraising campaign. But more of that in future articles! In happier news we were delighted to see work getting underway on making emergency repairs to our bay doors. The work is funded by a grant from Breckland Council and will help to safeguard the future of the three doors in the worst condition. And finally, the very best news that we could hope for! After being closed for 19 months we will finally be reopening on Sunday the 25th of July 2021 at 10am! For more info and updates, visit: www.charlesburrellmuseum.org.uk

The Desert Rats Association are raising funds to renovate the Sandhurst Desert Rats memorial stone describing the major campaigns and battles fought between 1939 - 1945. Then it will be incorporated into a larger memorial to all the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers that have served in the Second World War, Northern Ireland, Gulf War 1, Gulf War 2, Operation TELIC and Operation HERRICK. The event will take place between 10.30am and 3.30pm with a Memorial Service at 1pm. Entrance fees are £3.50 per person. Ian Paterson, Treasurer of the Association said: “The Annual Open Day has been running since 2004 and allows veterans, families and anyone who wishes to commemorate the only time in its history, that the 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats) was in the UK. Having been formed in the deserts of Egypt, where it fought its first battles, it travelled to Italy before returning to the UK to prepare for the Normandy Invasion in June 1944, here in Norfolk. After sailing at the start of June 1944, the Division has never returned to

This memorial day will allow people to remember the sacrifices of past generations who wore the Desert Rat on their arm, in WW2 and conflicts since and continue to do so in the modern era. Although this year’s event has to be reduced due to the current Covid restrictions anyone attending will be able to see vintage military vehicles, trade stands, re-enactors, our museum, take part in a service of remembrance, plus it is also a way of showing life can carry on in these difficult times. Thetford Voices Upbeat
Bardwell Primary School
Like many such groups, Thetford Voices has had to think afresh over the last twelve months. Unable to host our Children’s Singing Workshops live, we have embraced the Zoom culture. Our August 2020 workshop was an online sing-in. Otherwise it has been Quire of Voices that has kept our flag flying. We have made three videos on our Youtube channel: each twenty minutes of music and poetry for friends and families. The Christmas concert was shared with a wide circle of Care Homes across Norfolk and the latest Pigs, Pies and Lullabies with the children and families of EACH’s local hospice, The Nook. Now we are setting our sights on an in-person Summer Workshop for 6-16 year olds: Upping the Beat on August 10&11. With COVID measures still changing by the week, the final decision will have to be taken quite late in the day, but look out for confirmation in the August edition of About Thetford Magazine.
We are delighted to share with you the news that we have been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark. The PSQM ensures effective leadership of science, enables schools to work together to share good practices and is supported by professional development led by local experts. Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science leadership, teaching and learning.

Breckland Council has installed table tennis and chess tables on Thetford's Butten Island to encourage residents and visitors to explore the town centre and riverside walks. The games tables and chairs have been funded by Breckland Council's Market Towns Initiative and this is part of several improvements planned for the area. Button Island will shortly see street lighting extended into the area to help offer a safe and welcoming environment for residents. Previously, a number of dead or decaying trees were removed to let in more natural light and make the space for appealing. Residents have already been welcoming the new equipment on social media, viewing it as an "excellent new resource for the community".

Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Mike Brindle, pictured above said: “It was great to be able to have a game of chess whilst on Butten Island recently. Thetford now has ‘chess in the park, just like New York! Our river corridor is one of our major assets in Thetford and anything that can encourage people to make full use of it is a good thing in my book. Anyone fancy a game with me?” Councillor Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economic Development and Growth at Breckland Council commented: “The games tables are a great addition to Butten Island and should bring pleasure for years to come for residents and tourists visiting this area of beauty. Situated by the stunning river and mature trees, the area offers a fantastic backdrop for players to enjoy a game of chess or table tennis outside in the fresh air, whilst meeting friends or spending time with family. These great new town assets are also just two minutes’ walk from the town centre shops”.

Life Has Challenges Most teachers reach the end of the school year and are looking forward to a well earned rest, but not Thetford teacher Fiona Barnett.

Fiona enjoys walking and loves the outdoors, so when she came across a planned trek at the end of July through the Suffolk Countryside it seemed the perfect event to sign up to. The 13-mile trek was already full so 26 miles was the only option. “Ah well, in for a penny!” said Fiona as she signed up, “everybody needs community and support from time to time. Macmillan Cancer Support offers that, so I am pleased to be able to support that charity”. During 2020 Fiona’s mother, who was suffering from Pulmonary Fibrosis, became increasingly unwell and needed 24/7 care support. Fiona soon found out that being part of the care team and living in two homes for several months can be challenging. “I am so pleased that being part of her care team meant that Mum passed peacefully in August 2020 in her own home with me by her side. My mother-in-law passed away too earlier this year having become increasingly unwell and very frail. Again, family and a team of carers had been a wonderful support to her in her final years.” During 2020 Ickworth Park was Fiona’s favourite place to walk and reflect, beautiful surroundings with a number of walk options and coffee and scones at the end. Fiona has returned there and found it is a good training-ground to increase her mileage and stamina over these last few weeks. “I have in the past few years completed two 15 mile treks raising funds for the Quicken Trust who support and have transformed the village of Kabbubu in Uganda. These two treks took all day to complete, although they did include some steep hill-walking so to walk 26-mile in one day really is setting a challenge for me. I trust Suffolk will have a flatter landscape”.
Thetford teacher, Fiona Barnett who is taking part in a 26 mile challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support
Fiona’s Macmillan hike will take place on July 31st starting at Kentwell Hall and heading towards Flatford Mill. Fiona is keen to help her local community. She says that she has friends who have lost someone close to them recently and has found it helpful to sit with a takeaway coffee by the river and talk, knowing that someone really understands where you are coming from. Fiona is now considering offering that opportunity to others locally, perhaps arranging a group meet-up, for anyone who would just like someone to listen to their experience of loss, knowing that there is understanding from those listening. Mel’s 30 In 30 Challenge Success t r l i i f
National Volunteer Week saw the beginning of the latest challenge for Thetford’s Mel Sturman, running 30 half marathons in 30 days. Mel likes to choose a different charity to support each year and looked for an organisation that had been heavily impacted by the covid pandemic. St Nicholas Hospice Care saw its fundraising opportunities disappear almost overnight when the country went into lockdown last year. “A few of my friends and family have used the hospice’s service and been supported by them when they’ve had cancer or a bereavement. I know some of the professionals who work there and was aware of the financial difficulties they were facing so it was an obvious choice for me.” Mel also wanted to showcase the work the hospice team does. Each of her runs has been dedicated to individuals who have either sadly died or are part of the team or volunteers. She also managed to exceed her initial target of £1000 by day 22. On one run Mel joined forces on Whatsapp for a virtual half marathon with Dawn whose father died in the hospice. Dawn cycled in Stowmarket the same time as Mel ran in Thetford.
work with and very supportive of my challenge. The support I’ve received locally has been amazing.” Mel has been supported during her run by her partner Richard who has also joined her on some of the days. Rita Smith, Sheila Wright and Nicky Ginger completed their own half marathons whilst running with Mel whilst other friends have walked some of the way. On June 27th Mel joined Thetford Open Gardens by running a route that included each of the gardens, dedicating her run to the team behind Thetford Open Gardens.

Thetford Cricket Club I
t
t
t
t i
It promises to be a sensational summer of cricket Thetford Town Cricket Club is one of the oldest clubs in Norfolk with over 200 members, it is a friendly club that has a great reputation for developing players of all ages and abilities. A sociable and inclusive club fielding three adult teams, two of which compete in the Norfolk Cricket Alliance playing in Division One and Division Five, a Sunday team playing in the Mid Norfolk Sunday Cricket League and U11’s and U13’s teams playing in the South Norfolk Community League. At Thetford Town Cricket Club the junior section is thriving with over 50 members. This year the club has launched the English Cricket Board All Stars and Dynamos programmes as well as their own Youth Academy. All Stars and Dynamos is aimed at young children from age 5 – 11 and the Youth Academy from U11's upwards. On a Friday night you will find the club ground on Mundford Road alive with cricket activity, so if you have a child of school age who is interested in learning the skills, having some fun, and playing, get in touch with the club, new players are always welcome. And it’s not just a cricket club, it’s a club which does a lot for the community. Each year they host the All Out Music Festival and the Shadwell Trophy which is a mid-week competition for local businesses to come and enjoy a friendly game of cricket. The All Out this year is on Saturday 4th September and if you are interested in playing in the Shadwell cup, you can email the club for more information. The club’s vision over the next 2-3 years is to build a new Pavilion, not only for the cricketing members but for the local community as a hub for other local clubs, events and classes.
