The Forgotten Soldiers and David Osborne Memorial Garden Leaping Hare co-ordinated the lottery funded project ‘Peace Comes to Thetford – The Forgotten Soldiers’ from 2019, which has concluded with the opening of a special memorial garden at Thetford’s London Road Cemetery. The project focused on the men who survived the First World War and returned home to Thetford, suffering life-changing circumstances or sadly dying as a result of their injuries. Volunteers researched and plotted the graves of those buried in Thetford and discovered that several have no grave markings at all. Sadly, things took on a whole new meaning when we lost one of our own volunteers, our dear friend and local
historian David Osborne. He was passionate about the forgotten soldiers and was particularly looking forward to the installation of a double sided display board, which would help tell their story. The Cemetery Display Boards have been designed to be a permanent outdoor accessible exhibition of the project’s work and will be a lasting legacy for years to come. The display board details a trail map of the graves and their locations to assist with people finding their way and the reverse tells some of their and David’s stories. With the help of local businesses, donations from local groups and individuals and permission from Thetford Town Council, we have been able to create a wonderful legacy to the memory of both the forgotten soldiers and David. We marked the occasion with a very limited number of attendees. We plan on having a larger gathering next year, however, a special film has been made so that everyone that couldn’t attend is able to join us. A special section on our website: www. leapinghare.org is currently being developed ensuring that they are forever remembered online. We will also detail our thank you list there too – as there are so many people that have been involved in making this happen. Now, our attention turns to those unmarked graves. We are currently costing small marker stones and fund-raising will begin in earnest soon. Next time you visit the cemetery, please sit a while and enjoy the peaceful space created for you. Now we can all get free symptom-free Covid-19 tests to help protect each other. Around 1 in 3 people who have Covid-19 have no symptoms and are spreading it without knowing. That could be a relative. It could even be you. Tests show results within 30 minutes. They also show you’re doing what you can to protect your loved ones.

Council Launches £100k Fund For Environmentally-Friendly Schemes Breckland Council is calling on community groups across the district to come forward with their ideas for projects which benefit the environment. Successful groups will each receive a slice of a new £100k pot, with grants from £500 to £10,000. The council's new Green Grants scheme has been launched part of its commitment to drive environmental-friendly changes in the district, both as an organisation and by working with partners and the public to deliver initiatives. To enable a really diverse mix of projects to be supported the criteria is broad, however projects which are most likely to receive a grant include those which find solutions to environmental problems, reduce litter and waste, save water and energy, promote green travel options, protect natural habitats, and educate people on ways they could make small changes in their lifestyles which are good for the planet. The council hopes to award up to 80 small grants of £500 and between 6-12 large grants of between £5,000 - £10,000, depending on the applications submitted. Applications can be submitted by Breckland community groups, schools as well as businesses, town & parish councils, and charities.

of green initiatives. The money will be spent on a bottle shredder and plastic-making machine. Thetford Boudica Ward Councillor Stuart Terry said: “I know that there are lots of groups in Thetford doing great work to support our local environment. I encourage them to apply for this new funding opportunity to help and improve the work that they are undertaking”. Green Grant scheme applications must be submitted by Sunday, 12th September. Funding awards will be made in early October. Visit the website for further information: Abbey Garage AD.qxp_Layout 1 17/07/2017 14:36 Pag www.breckland.gov.uk/climate-change/ green-community-grants
Cllr Ian Sherwood, Breckland's Sustainability Strategy lead, commented: "At the heart of our Sustainability Strategy is a commitment to not only make positive environmental changes ourselves, but to work with others so they can deliver green schemes too. This significant funding will help local groups' ideas become a reality and I can't wait to see the breadth of the proposals that are put forward."

Annual Community Day Is Back The team at Charles Burrell Centre have been planning the Annual Community Day and can’t wait to see you all on Sunday 5th September from 10am til 4pm. As always entry is free and there will be loads to see, do, take part in and eat! Larry Gray will be setting up rides from the fair and maybe even a bouncy castle, plus food vendors and the café will be open. The Miniature Donkeys for Wellbeing will be with us and Wycombe Pastures Petting Zoo too! Our tenants and other traders will be showcasing what they do and the display arena will be busy throughout the day. West Suffolk College are planning some free taster workshops. This year the centre will be asking everyone who attends to decorate a cog that will then be used in a piece of artwork that a local graphic designer will be coordinating for us. It will be displayed at CBC for all to see so make sure you stop by that stand and be a part of the art. CBC will be running traditional games stalls such as splat the rat and wheel of fortune and there will of course be a raffle, a tombola and treasure trial. We have some absolutely amazing prizes for the raffle and will soon be selling tickets in advance of the big day – so if you are not able to make it on the 5th September but would still like to be a part of it we will be selling tickets at reception. The Engine Room Café will be open for light lunches, snacks, afternoon tea and cake. Plenty to whet your appetite and tickle the tastebuds. There will be a treasure trail and an opportunity to play “Where’s Bear” as we couldn’t organise a fun day without including Bear the Cat who many of you will have seen on visits to the centre roaming the corridors in search of attention. If you would like to be considered for a stall at Community Day, please email:

Take me to the river
Our latest shop window display, created by Chris Sanderson of Hullabaloo, depicts a scene from our riverbank, complete with otter family. It’s designed to shine a spotlight on the beautiful rivers, Thet and Little Ouse, that flow through Thetford and the work of Thetford River Group. Sean Ready and the amazing team of volunteers from the local community make regular patrols in their canoes, clearing litter. Did you know that they
also monitor the health of the invertebrates, fish and wildlife? They collaborate with the Environment Agency, Water Resources East and Anglian Water to help keep the implementation of the Water Framework Directive on track and they’re helping us gain a deeper understanding of the way in which our domestic waste water and our drinking water form part of the aquatic network. Find out more at thetfordrivergroup.org or their Facebook page.
We’ve been double busy recently! We had loads of entries for this year’s Thetford calendar competition. You will find the final 12 images in this issue ― make sure you choose your favourite. Thetford’s New Mayor Unveils His Plans For The Year Cllr Mike Brindle became Mayor at the end of May following on from Cllr Mark Robinson. Mike’s year will look a little different from Mark’s as we are beginning to move into stage 4 and more events and activities restart. Mike says his year has started well and he’s enjoying the experience along with the Mayoress, his wife Corinne. Thetford has the second oldest Mayoralty in the country having had continuous Mayors for over 800 years. The Brindles moved to Thetford in 1987 when Mike became the Headmaster at Rosemary Musker High School (now Thetford Academy) where his two children became pupils. Mike remained at the school until his retirement in 2002. Seven years later he dipped his toe into local politics and became a Norfolk County Councillor, followed by joining Thetford Town Council. He joined Breckland District Council in 2017. “It is a huge honour and a great pleasure for Corinne and I to become Mayor and Mayoress of our adopted hometown. We came to Thetford for a job, and we have grown to love this place.” Mike explained, “I know that we would all like Thetford to have good housing and good jobs available for everyone. That’s beyond the power of Thetford Town Council, but I will certainly keep working with other authorities to increase opportunities in Thetford for people and for local business.”
Cllr Mike Brindle, Mayor of Thetford 2021/22 with his wife Corinne visiting Thetford Open Gardens in June
have grown in a similar way to Thetford. Mike would very much like to continue the friendships already developed. Mike’s interest in local politics developed from a deeply committed Grandfather who stood unsuccessfully for Parliament eight times. At school Mike was known for standing up for the underdog. “I think there’s still a bit of that in me. I believe in fairness and treating people with respect. Everyone should have decent prospects”.
Mike plans his Mayoralty to be a team effort between himself, Corinne, his Chaplain Ken Nicholls and his wife, Heather. During his Mayoral Mike’s priorities for the year include working year he is hoping to be able to celebrate the towards improving the town centre and river anniversary of the Les Ulis link with Thetford, corridor. “Small improvements, little changes that along with the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s make a big difference like the new lights along accession. Mike has stayed in each of Thetford’s Spring Walk.” Mike walks along the river most link towns - Hurth near Cologne, Germany, days and would like to see more people given Skawina near Krakow, Poland1and Spijkenisse DKM Services AD.qxp_Layout 09/07/2018 15:51 the Pagopportunity to make use of it. He is keen to near Rotterdam, Netherlands - small towns which encourage the use of river craft such as paddle boards and being able to enjoy safe swimming. Aside from the river corridor Mike is also keen to see Thetford Market Place, owned by Thetford Town Council put into better use for the community TYRES l EXHAUSTS l SUSPENSION and niche shops in the Shambles. “We need to ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS l BRAKES l SERVICING bring people into Thetford for leisure, to have a FOR ALL MAKES OF CARS AND VANS meal, buy a drink and enjoy their time here.” Mike Now offering air conditioning servicing also has plans to develop a children’s nature trail 5 Leyland Close, Fison Way Ind. Mike said he chose Citizens Advice as they support those in need, they listen, they advise and if you have a problem with something like housing or debt you can speak to them totally confidentially. Fincham’s Farm is a small local charity that takes in men who are facing severe challenges. The project offers support and helps people back on track. Mike found out about Fincham’s Farm from Andrea Jarrold, Vice Chair at CBC who is a Trustee at the project, “It seemed to me that it was something we should support, it’s more than just putting a sticking plaster on, they make a real difference.” In mid June Mike and Corinne visited Fincham’s Farm in an offical capacity, meeting the residents and hearing about the plans and vision for the work of the charity. They also enjoyed a lunch made using the farm’s produce. Mike admits that although what he can do as Mayor is limited, he can support those who can and also provide a listening ear. He spends many mornings in the town centre at one of the cafes and welcomes people to sit and chat with him, to tell him about the changes they’d like to see in Thetford and if he can help, he will. With the country moving to stage 4 on the covid roadmap, Mike’s Civic Service went ahead and hopes a reception will be able to go ahead as usual. The Mayor’s Ball is scheduled for April 29th 2022 and Mike will be hosting a Christmas Lunch for Thetford elders on 23rd December 2021. Where Are All The Butterflies? The cold spring and early summer of 2021 seems to have had an impact on some of our butterflies. So far this year, nearly all of the 13 butterfly species that are monitored as part of the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch are being seen in fewer gardens. They are also appearing later in the year than usual. Holly Blue, a tiny pastel-blue butterfly that loves Holly and Ivy, is normally seen most often in May. As a result of the cold spring weather though, their numbers peaked in June this year. Lower than average reporting rates for Comma, a rich orange butterfly with wings that always look ragged, even when they are fresh – and Green veined White have probably also been caused by the cold start to the season. However, their numbers could still pick up if we have warm, dry weather in July and August. BTO have been asking people to look out for butterflies in their gardens and take part in its Garden BirdWatch (GBW) project, which also monitors butterflies and other garden wildlife alongside birds. It is free to take part and is the only survey that monitors garden wildlife all year round. Thetford resident Rob Jaques, from the GBW team, said, “It is not all bad news for our butterflies: at least one has done better than usual this year. Painted Lady, a migrant species which travels from as far as the Mediterranean and north Africa, was seen in twice as many gardens in June than in a typical year. Adding your sightings into GBW will help us to see how butterflies are faring as the summer progresses, and to monitor later-emerging species such as Meadow Brown and Ringlet.”
Painted Lady by Mike Toms/BTO
keep an eye on how they are doing year on year. The BTO would love more people to record the butterflies and other wildlife that they see in their gardens. For more information and to take part, please visit: www.bto.org/gbw Nick Moran, BTO
Thetford Open Gardens Celebrates Exceeding All Expectations!
The team behind Thetford Open Gardens are jubilant after this year’s campaign raised £11,284 with further funds from Sue’s ongoing plant sales to add. After cancelling last year’s event the team were determined to find a way to go ahead this year, splitting the day to create two smaller events in June. With the help of Leaping Hare covid safe procedures were put in place, and although numbers were limited the event was well supported. Next year the event will revert to being held on one day, Sunday June 26th. Local artist Matthew Peace will create the front cover and tickets will be £8 each. The team are always interested in new gardens so if you think you’d like to be part GBW has been monitoring garden butterflies of next year’s event please email: since survey began in 11995, and it is17:03 thanksPage 1 AKFSthe Advert.qxp_Layout 14/10/2020 karen.thetfordopengardens@gmail.com to everyone who takes part that we are able to

Thetford Garden & Allotment Club August is here, the days are shorter and the cooler evenings help to revive tired crops. If it is dry make sure to keep watering, better a good soak three to four times a week than a sprinkling of water more often! Water is important for birds in hot weather and a saucer of water at ground level can be a real help to thirsty hedgehogs. Garlic, shallots and onions should be nearly ready to lift this month. Lift the bulbs away from the soil with a fork so that the shallow roots break contact with the soil. Leave them on the ground for approximately two weeks and then gather them up and place on a greenhouse bench or on a table in full sun to dry off. Once the skins are dry and papery store them in a cool, well ventilated place. Mid August is the time to ‘stop’ tomatoes, if the number of trusses is restricted and the tops are pinched out or ‘stopped’ fruit will be better as all the energy goes into the fruit. Keep up with the feeding, a branded tomato feed or home made comfrey tea.

Garlic, shallots and onions should be ready this month Foxgloves can be sown now in a flower pot and you can transfer the seedlings to cell trays and then 10cm (4 inch) pots. Plant out in the Autumn into final positions. Digitalis Purpurea is the usual purple type, much loved by bees. The Club is holding their Annual Open Show on Saturday September 11th in the Methodist Hall, why not enter? There are classes for fruit and vegetables, flowers, crafts and cookery. A few tips for show day include turning up in good time to arrange your exhibits; taking along some reserve items as it’s easy to snap a bean or squash a tomato; take a ‘tool bag’ with scissors, pen, spare paper plates and most importantly a Schedule for reference. If you have any questions someone will always help or offer advice. These are fun events and very enjoyable and who knows you may be collecting a prize after judging! Good luck and happy gardening!

To Mow Or Not To Mow? 97% of British wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s. Recently there has been a fair amount of public criticism of mowing down areas in Thetford which could actually support very good populations of wildflowers, which in turn could support many species of bees, butterflies and other insects which are currently declining. Thetford Town Council are therefore consulting residents about possible changes to the mowing regimes for some parts of local green spaces which might include: Reducing mowing frequency from every 2-3 weeks to every 4-6 weeks to allow quick-flowering species to bloom and provide a valuable nectar source. Plus, reducing mowing frequency to once or twice a year, mainly in areas small enough for our volunteer group to rake off the arisings. This would allow many more wildflower species to flower and set seed, and thus spread. In all cases paths across the sites would be kept mown as frequently as now, as would informal sports pitches, areas near to severe hay-fever sufferers’ houses, and any other areas where there is a need or strong feeling from local residents in favour of keeping closely mown grass. If mowing frequency is reduced at any site, contractor’s staff time will then be allocated to other duties such as litter-picking. The areas where changes to the mowing regimes are being considered are School Plain, Melford Common, Lady Gentle Meadow, Nun’s Bridges Road (from Mill Lane to Bury Road) and Barnham Cross Common old playing fields. Buzz Created As Pollinator Paradises Set For Roadsides Tripling the number of Roadside Nature Reserves in Norfolk was among a range of green measures considered by County Councillors recently. Fewer cuts for rural roadsides, a pollinator action plan, and 188 more roadside nature reserves are part of plans to boost biodiversity along roads and paths across the county. Cllr Barry Stone, Chair of the Infrastructure and Development Select Committee, said: “These plans are designed to help make our roadsides a real pollinator paradise. We’re clear that balancing safety and nature must be central to any new policy but we have a fantastic chance here to make some real changes for the better.” The report states that sympathetic management of roadside verges can provide a connected habitat for insects and wildlife. Also discussed were plans to help boost cycling and walking across the county, and development of a new verge management policy. The aim of the new policy is to help involve local communities more.

MONEY MATTERS
Residential Landlords Taking Advantage Of Rising Prices To Dispose Of Their Property Need To Be Aware Of Tax Reporting Rules With house prices still soaring, and both increasing tax and regulation making the role ever harder, many residential landlords are seizing the opportunity of a strong market to sell one or more of their properties. For many who bought their investment properties a few years ago, they will be making a healthy profit – average house prices in the UK have grown by nearly 22 per cent in five years, according to the Land Registry. But what many may not realise is that the rules for reporting any capital gain changed last year. Whereas previously the gain could be declared on the landlord’s year-end tax return, now it has to be declared – and any capital gains tax liability paid – within 30 days of the completion date. The rule doesn’t apply to your main residence, provided you lived in the property throughout the period of ownership (in which case no CGT will be due), nor does it apply to disposals of overseas properties, where gains still need to be reported on the annual self-assessment tax return. Transfers between spouses are also exempt from the requirement.
unless you dispose of multiple properties on the same day, in which case they can be reported on one return. If it is the right time to dispose of a property, then landlords shouldn’t let this rule put them off. It’s just vital that they realise the tight deadlines for both reporting a capital gain and paying the tax due on it – otherwise they might be making an expensive error.
Colin Chamberlain is a Chartered Tax Adviser based at Lovewell Blake’s Thetford office.
Landlords who fail to report disposals within the 30 day limit are likely to face late filing penalties from HMRC, as well as late payment interest in respect of any capital gains tax due – in fact, a substantial sum has already been levied in penalties against investors. Given that under the previous system, a gain made early in the tax year might not have to be reported until as much as 21 months later, the potential for penalties and big interest bills are enormous. To facilitate this new reporting requirement, HMRC has launched a digital service. To use this requires a Government Gateway account, so that you can create a UK property account. You will still have to report the gain on your annual selfassessment tax return as well, but a tax credit will be available if you have already paid the tax due on the gain. A separate return is required for each separate disposal of UK residential property, Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 22
Consider Your Cat’s Welfare The poor cat in the picture was once somebody’s fluffy kitten. You may well ask how he came to be in such terrible condition. He was found by a member of the public outside her house and she brought him inside to try to feed him. He was grossly dehydrated, but when she tried to syringe water into his mouth, he just spat out green pus. She called us and we did the only thing humanely possible for him. He was put to sleep to save any further suffering. And the reason he was in this condition, is because he wasn’t neutered. He had been fighting with other cats, which is what the unneutered cats do, and as a result he was full of infection. Not only in his mouth, but on his chest as well. His kidneys were small and hard due to the dehydration and he wasn’t an old cat. He was just uncared for. This is what happens when you don’t neuter your cat. Whether male or female, they need neutering at around 4 months of age, to stop females getting pregnant and to stop males turning into aggressive toms. Here is another case, this time a female cat who was not neutered. A lady had a 10 year old female cat, so goodness knows how many litters of kittens the cat has had, since they can have 3 litters a year. However, although most times a cat can give birth to kittens easily, sometimes things go wrong, which happened in this case. When she went into labour the cat had a kitten stuck in the birth canal, and had to be taken to the vet for a caesarian section. The kitten in the birth canal sadly died, along with one of the others kittens. She would have had 5 altogether, but ended up with 3 beautiful babies. However the vet’s bill was around £1000. It may seem a lucrative business, selling kittens, as we have seen this year with kittens that are just moggies being sold for exorbitant prices. But there is always the chance that things don’t go

A cat that sadly needed to be put to sleep recently due to a lack of care from its owner
according to plan. The owner in question took the cat and kittens back home, but allowed the cat to go outside to spend a penny. A mum with kittens should always be kept inside with a litter tray while the kittens are tiny. Anyway, mum doesn’t want to be away from them for very long as they have strong maternal instincts. Sadly the mummy cat picked up an acute infection and was rushed to the vets where she couldn’t be saved and had to be put to sleep. Therefore we have 3 ten day old kittens in our care, being hand reared by one of our experienced volunteers. It would have been a lot cheaper if the owner had paid £70 and had the cat neutered, and she might still be here today. So if you have an unneutered cat, male or female and need help with the cost of neutering, we are here ready to help you to save more sad stories like those here. Please call us on 01842 810018 if you need any help or advice.

Now in its 4th year, the competition has received the largest number of entries yet. It has certainly given the judges, who include representatives from Lawsons Estate Agents, About Thetford and independent judge Carl Harding-Palmer quite a challenge, but we’re sure you’ll agree that they’ve done a great job. Well done to everyone who entered, the final 12 calendar images you see are displayed here and it’s now up to you, the About Thetford readers, to vote for your favourite image overall, which will take pride of place on the front cover. Pick your favourite number and send to info@leapinghare.org or post or drop in to Everything Thetford at Leaping Hare, 20 King Street. You have until 25 August to vote.

Our entries come from a wide range of abilities - the competiton is open to everyone. Entry for Thetford Calendar Competition 2023 is now open year round - particularly important for the calendar as the judges have to consider both the ‘Thetford’ aspect and how appropriate the images are for the time of year - an image that may be perfect for August, wouldn’t work quite so well for January for example. Closing date for next year is Tuesday 31 May 2022, so you have plenty of time to feel inspired!

New Support Service Available For Thetford Residents Dove’s Nest Ministries is an organisation currently based at the Charles Burrell Centre in Thetford. They re-home furniture and basic household goods to individuals and families in need through their referral process. Dove’s Nest Ministries works to alleviate furniture poverty, raise an awareness of environmental responsibility and promote a culture of giving back to the local community. At Dove’s Nest Ministries they want to see those who engage with the organisation feeling ‘at home’ in their spirit, in their homes and in their local environment. DNM began with Paul an Assistant Pastor for the Church Of The Nazarene who recognised the need for low cost household items for the people of Thetford and it’s surrounding area. As a result of this need a group of local business owners and church leaders developed DNM under a board of Trustees in February 2021 and they’re currently awaiting formal charity status. Paul said: “I volunteer for Dove’s Nest Ministries because I see that there are people around us

who are really struggling and I want to help them feel more comfortable and cared for. I hope to encourage others to act and to take responsibility for making our community great!” DNM can be contacted through their Facebook page, or by ringing 07538311407 or via e:mail: dovesnestministries@outlook.com

New Volunteering Opportunities We are so looking forward to our next meeting, the first one for over a year without having to limit our numbers. At the meeting last month Paul Adamson was singing rock and roll songs. He had been booked over two years ago as when he was here the first time there was no Covid restrictions and he was able to move around the room singing. We all danced! I think it was the conga around the hall! This time it was so different and a little disappointing as we all had to sit in our chairs, Paul had to stay well away from us singing only on the stage thus the atmosphere was very different for us all but it was so lovely to receive some thanks and comments of how enjoyable it had been. On August 26th we have Michael Wickens speaking on Mulberry Harbour June 1944. This promises to be a very interesting talk as this was one of the most remarkable events to emerge from the Second World War as in terms of engineering achievement, surely the greatest of all time. A little reminder to you all there will be a U3A social on Sept 9th at the Scout Hut, off the Mundford Road. It will be starting about 12.30pm and the aim is to have a relaxed afternoon together. There will be a quiz, a walk with Dave and many other things planned. Refreshments will be available If anyone would like transport please ring me and it can be arranged. I also wish to inform you that if anyone has trouble in finding the U3A subscription fee difficult we offer a bursary which will be conducted in complete confidence with our treasurer Wally Boldock, his telephone number is 01842 824201. We are losing 4 committee members in September due to their three year term coming to an end, thus we are looking for members who would be interested in joining us. If you would like to know more of what is involved we invite you to come along and sit in our meetings, I think you will find them interesting, amusing in lots of ways and quite relaxed. We only meet once a month for one hour or so. If you are interested in finding out more please give me a call on 01842 824074, I will be very pleased to hear from you. Advice For Private Renters “I’ve been living in my privately rented flat for years. I generally have a good relationship with my landlord but I just can’t get them to carry out repairs that have built up. How can I get them to act - and what exactly do they have to do?” The law states that your landlord must provide accommodation that is safe, healthy and free from things that could cause serious harm. You don’t say exactly what repairs are needed. If you have problems such as electrical wiring that you think might be faulty, or there’s damp, or an infestation by pests, the landlord has a legal obligation to put things right. Landlords are also responsible for the maintenance of the general structure, and fittings such as boilers and radiators; basins, baths and toilets; and the drains. The first step is to contact your landlord again, in writing. It is a good idea to include photographs of the problems if you are able. It is advisable to keep a record of all the communications and evidence relating to the disrepair. If that doesn’t prompt any action, Citizens Advice can help with next steps. These could include contacting your local council (who will have dedicated officers for dealing with disrepair in private rented properties) or asking for
a visit by the environmental health team. Contact us at Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District if you would like more help. Our advice is free, impartial and confidential. Advice line: 0800 144 8848 Email advice via our website www.cadat.org.uk Follow us on social media @DissThetfordCA

We hope to be able to have our normal meetings with a speaker after the summer when plans can be made to help charities locally as well as internationally. In 2024 the organisation will be 100 years old having been formed in Manchester.
As usual, there are a number of community litter picks taking place across Thetford in August. If you are interested in helping to keep Thetford clean and tidy then please pop along to one of these sessions. All equipment is provided, but if you have your own then you are encouraged to take it along. Past & Present
White Hart Street in 1910 was a bustling commercial street with two public houses and the main road through Thetford towards London. The building we now know as Ancient House Museum was a subdivided private dwelling with the Newton family living in part of it. Today, cars have replaced bicycles and traffic lights have been installed. St Peters Church still stands but is no longer in use and the graveyard has lost its railings. Many of the buildings remain despite a change of use, although both pubs have long gone, you can just see the King’s Head building clad in metal fencing towards the top of the street. Thetford Treasure Returns A selection of objects from the renowned Thetford Treasure, on loan from the British Museum, is now on display at Ancient House Museum, in an all new exhibition of The Thetford Treasure. This special exhibition will present 11 of the key items from this internationally important Roman hoard including items such as the famous gold belt-buckle, a gold chain necklace, gold bracelets, gold finger rings, a pendant, a silver strainer and inscribed silver spoons. They represent exquisite workmanship both in terms of their manufacture and their decoration; many pieces detail inscriptions and depictions connected to Roman mythology. The imagery featured on some of the objects link to Roman deities including Faunus, Bacchus and Diana. This will be the first-time items from the hoard have been on display in the town’s museum since 2008. The Thetford Treasure was found by metal detectorists Arthur and Greta Brooks in 1979 and includes 44 pieces of jewellery and 33 silver spoons. The treasure was buried in around 390 AD when opposition to religious cults was rife. The treasure was not declared straight away so the opportunity to study the site where it was found was sadly lost. Other objects in the exhibition highlight the importance of recording archaeological discoveries in helping us understand our past, using the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme. The finds on display include a large assemblage of Roman pewter and glass from a Roman temple site in Hockwold. Margaret Dewsbury, the Cabinet Member for Communities and partnerships at Norfolk County Council said, “I am so pleased these internationally renowned Roman objects will be displayed once more at the Ancient House Museum, so close to where they were originally discovered. This exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for
Gold buckle featuring a Satyr, © Trustees of the British Museum
local communities to connect directly with an important part of their heritage, and visitors to the area to enjoy these remarkable artefacts.” Oliver Bone, Curator of the Ancient House Museum said: “I am very happy the museum will be able to display such an exciting selection of objects from the hoard, especially so soon after our reopening. The treasure is important not just because of its beauty, but also because of what it can tell us about late Roman Britain. We are very grateful to the British Museum for lending them.” Entry to the exhibition is included in general admission. To visit, tickets must be booked at least one day in advance. Mini Donks Delight At TADDS! TADDS celebrated its 7th birthday in July with a lovely visit from the Miniature Donkeys. It has been well over a year since they have visited TADDS and since then, Donkey Saffron has had lovely baby Jack, to the delight of all attending the group. “We welcomed new people to our group; who were delighted to have chosen our birthday to drop in and see us and we were able to show them just what Thetford Dementia Support Group is all about” explained founder Jo Mountjoy-Dixon. “For our new volunteers who have been with us exactly 4 weeks, it was fun to see how they enjoyed spending their time chatting and getting involved in the group’s activities and conversations, whilst also making our new group members feel settled and welcome with refreshments, buffet food and cake”.
In October TADDS will be holding a memorial morning to acknowledge all who they have lost, not just in the covid year but in the 7 years TADDS has been running. More will be released about this soon. “It’s good to be back in the group and have the loud chatter that goes along with that, and it has been very much missed by all who are attending,” Jo continued. If you would like to call in and visit a TADDS group session, please call on 07542 866 519 or email: taddsgroup@hotmail.com

Carnival Time At Bardwell Primary Bardwell CE Primary School held a community carnival to celebrate the end of term – a rousing and dazzling display of flamboyant costumes and flawless performances with a fundraising fair thrown into the mix. The curriculum in the half term leading up to the Carnival was fully focussed on the theme, seeing pupils in Art and Technology lessons making flags and masks, developing theatrical and dance skills in Drama. The day started with a noisy and very colourful procession around the village, with a huge turnout of village residents and pupils’ families lining the route. Many children decorated their wheeled vehicles (scooters, bikes and even a pram) with Ethan from Year 4 winning the prize for best decorated. In The Croft, a residential area in the centre of Bardwell with a beautiful village green of its own, the procession stopped for a rendition of Oleo, a call and response women’s working song from Ghana. The troupe then moved onto the School’s ‘Daisy Meadow’ for a sun-soaked programme, watched by a very appreciative audience of pupils’ families, stretched out in the sun on picnic rugs.
The carnival procession getting ready to depart
Fiona Grant-Chivers, grandparent to one of the pupils, was full of praise, “What a day! So much has gone into this and it has been extraordinary. I just heard a local resident say that she was thrilled to be interrupted from her usual morning routine by all the singing and whistles”. Mrs Boyd, Acting Deputy Head of the school and main organiser of the event, said, “We just had to celebrate our brilliant school and village by bringing some music, laughter and colour to the streets of Bardwell. We are delighted by how many people came along to make some noise and are really impressed by all the costumes, which were made by parents and carers”.
Each class had learnt a dance, which was performed in their handmade 3-D masks, then all the children performed the freedom song ‘Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around’. Finally, there was a drumming performance which told the story of the rains coming to an African village after months of drought. After the performances had Weddings, Baby showers, Party’s finished, the children worked in teams to run their All special events enterprise fair, which doubled up as a fundraiser for the school’s PTA. Families forked out on favourites like guessing the teddy’s name, and Sweet cart, Flower wall to have a go at what must be the world’s longest & Garden games egg and spoon challenge. Salon Celebrates 40 Years Over forty years ago as I was sitting on a bus going backwards and forwards to study hairdressing. I never dreamed that I would be trained by the late and great John Oliver himself. Even at a young age I realised that this man was something special and looking back as we do after a landmark 40 years in the same salon; I know how lucky I was at that young age to have become part of the John Oliver team. I was fortunate to be mentored by him and later on in my career to become a Partner and Owner, something I am always immensely proud of. I thank him for that and I miss him too. John Olivers is now in its third location in the town. The first location was Well Street, then Raymond Street and now we are at 19 Guildhall Street. Four decades of trading, so many staff and trainees have come and gone in this time and its been good. In fact we are currently looking for a fully qualified stylist to come and work at John Olivers at the moment. As you can imagine many changes have happened over the years. Styles and fashions have come and gone. That said the style always needs to look good on the client, so fashion has to be tweaked sometimes to take into consideration the hair type and face shape. That is the part of the job that I particularly enjoy. Talking of clients, some of them have been with me for the whole journey. What a honour that has been and I have been fortunate to have had some really wonderful clients.
Above: Peter with some of his stylists in the early 1990s when John Oliver were based in Wells Street. Left: Peter with stylist Lorraine and receptionist Ricky in the Guildhall Street Salon
to them and all the other people that have helped in large and small ways, particularly Ricky my receptionist, a really big thank you everyone. I would like to say it’s been a privilege being a hairdresser, making people look and hopefully feel better. This forty year’s journey has just flown by so very quickly. I am looking forward to the years ahead. John Oliver August 2021 Ad.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2021 17:15 Pag Best wishes to you all, Peter Wade

Tina’s Chop For Charity Lloyds Pharmacy employee Tina Miles has taken the company’s support for Alzheimer’s Society to a whole new level, quite literally with her hair! Tina’s mum suffered with dementia and after she sadly passed away, Tina decided to set herself a personal challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. She called it her “Chop for Charity” and set up a just giving page with a target of £500. Tina said that if she raised the £500 she would have her long hair cut short, and if she raised more she would also dye her hair blue. Customers and residents from Croxton where Tina lives donated and her target was quickly reached. By the time Tina’s appointment came around, with the total exceeded £500, so blue hair was on the horizon! On the 6th July, Debbie of Diamond Scissors on Brandon Road, Thetford, cut and dyed Tina’s hair. Thanks to all the people who so generously donated, Tina raised a total of £710, “I would like to say a big thank you to Debbie and all those wonderful people who supported me and made my challenge a success”.

Our bodies need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. Stop and give a little thought at just how amazing our bodies really are. We learn to read what our body is telling us, and spot the symptoms. There are several things we can do to help boost our energy levels and promote feelings of well-being. Things such as meditation or Tai Chi, or having regular massage. There are numerous ways to access information on how to meditate these days or join specially run classes. Massage is an ancient and powerful tool, working on both psyche and physical levels. The use of Hot Stones in a massage are extremely effective and boost the power of a traditional massage considerably. The stones are made from Volcanic rocks which can hold the heat for up to 30 minutes. It is also claimed that 1 stroke of a traditional massage would equal 5-7 when using the hot stones. It is deeper and very relaxing, helping to promote a greater sense of well being. Therapists need to be specially trained to perform this type of treatment. I suggest, don’t wait until you have some of the symptoms mentioned above, try preventative measures and release your inner happiness! Regards, Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Chris said: "Our ethos is to do it well but keep it simple. We source our pizza ingredients direct from Italy and our burgers are all grilled to order, so we can offer an authentic taste in a really relaxed atmosphere. We strive to provide good quality food which is cooked by real chefs. Dough & Co was born out of the concept that even fastfood style food can be made healthily and with the love and passion of fine dining food. We strive to offer the best value and service we possibly can. We have taken longer to open this restaurant and this has made us even more excited to open and provide the people in Thetford with the best quality food and service we can. Being alongside the beautiful river, in a central location, open daily from noon to 11pm, is a dream come true for any new restaurant”. Cllr Paul Hewett, Executive Member for Property and Projects at Breckland Council, said: "I am truly delighted to see the outstanding preparation work that has gone in by Chris and his team to establish two brand new restaurants. As lockdown restrictions ease, it's the ideal time for residents and visitors to Breckland to visit!”

Be Considerate When It’s Hot Now that it is hot, hot, hot (for this week anyway!) and people are venturing out more and more, I thought I would raise the issue of anti-social behaviour (ASB) which can seriously threaten the quality of life for those living and working in our area. So, what is anti-social behaviour? ASB is behaviour that is capable of causing nuisance and annoyance, is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. It creates significant and persistent problems in a neighbourhood and can leave communities intimidated and afraid. Examples of such behaviour would include: Noise, harassment, vandalism, graffiti and fly tipping, nuisance neighbours, street drinking, intimidation and threats, violence and hate behaviour that targets members of identified groups because of their perceived differences. If ASB is affecting you or your family contact Norfolk Constabulary either via 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also contact the local policing team directly by email: SNTThetfordt@norfolk.police.uk
raise concerns with the council and others. It is useful if you can keep a record of the ASB you are experiencing as a written log of each incident is the best way to show evidence of ASB. This can be used to fully assess the impact of the activity, or as powerful evidence in court. You can use the log as a diary to record what you see or hear and you should fill in the diary as soon as possible after witnessing an incident, so that it is fresh in your mind. It is important that you include how you are feeling and how the incident has impacted on your normal life – for example if it has made you feel scared or depressed, stopped you sleeping, made you fear for your children or stop them playing out in the street.
Norfolk Constabulary will work with agencies, So if you are going to be out enjoying the weather, where necessary to act to address the problem please be mindful of others and stay safe! MCPyou HPcan Advert 1 19/11/2018 Page 1 and also11.18.qxp_Layout discuss any issues with your 09:41 local councillor, who can act on your behalf to PC Paula Gilluley

Get Ready For A New Season At Thetford Rugby Club Thetford Rugby Club are looking forward to their player registration and fun day in prepartation for the new season. Players new and old are welcome to join the club for the upcoming season on August 21st at the club ground on Mundford Road. Thetford Rugby Union Football Club was formed in November 1959 by a group of enthusiasts headed by John Clark, David Cunningham and Bill Jennings. They had little to encourage them but their belief that the time was ripe for the formation of a club and that support for the club would grow along with the growth of the town. Over the years the rugby club has grown to expand it’s activities for all ages and fitness. We currently have 2 mens teams and a touch rugby team for all genders aged 14 and above, training is Thursdays at 7pm. The club is proud to be part of the wider Thetford community. Thetford Bulldogs and Explore4more run a range of activities on the club’s large grounds. The brand new cafe, Cafe 15 is open Saturdays and Sundays 10am - 3pm, all family and dog friendly! The Club have just added a new undercover outdoor seating area for supporters as well as having disabled access.
Along with new players, supporters and sponsors are always welcome. The 1st XV play in the London League 4 and the 2nd team, the Heathens, play in Eastern Counties Div 3 (North). Both teams are looking for players. It doesn’t matter what experience or ability is, all will be welcomed and training is on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. If contact isn’t your thing why not come along and try touch rugby. It’s a great way to improve your fitness, make new friends and be part the club. Air Ambulance Trek 24 Challenge Comes Back With Three New Routes This summer East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) will be hosting its first large-scale fundraising challenge since August 2019 in the form of Trek 24; an organised 24 kilometre or 24 mile walk. For the first time there are three different locations to choose from, including the North Norfolk coast and Suffolk and Bedfordshire countryside. Two Trek 24 events were planned to take place in 2020 but both were unable to go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Optimistically looking ahead to this summer, EAAA is excited to now be organising three Trek 24 events across the region and bringing Trek 24 back to North Norfolk, finishing at Holkham Hall. The life-saving charity has two helicopter emergency teams covering East Anglia and aims to raise £15 million a year to deliver and develop its service. Trek 24 is a guided 24 km or 24 mile walk to help raise vital funds to help the charity start flying 24/7, which it hopes to do later this summer. The very first Trek 24 event took place in 2019 in Norfolk and saw hundreds of walkers setting off from either West Runton or Cley, all finishing at Holkham Hall, and raised over £100,000 for the helicopter emergency medical service charity. The charity is hopeful this year’s Trek 24 events will each be as successful. The Trek 24 timetable is as follows: Suffolk Coast and Country: Saturday 14 August, finishing at Sotterley Estate. The Chilterns Challenge: Saturday 4 September, starting and finishing at Hexton Manor. Norfolk Coastal Route: Sunday 12 September, finishing at Holkham Hall. Tickets are on sale now from £25 with £200 sponsorship pledge. There are different ticket prices available depending on the sponsorship pledge. Sign up online at: www.trek-24.co.uk

Enjoy a summer challenge and raise vital funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance
Catrina Miller, Events Lead of EAAA, said: “Over the last 15 months we haven’t been able to hold any community fundraising events at all, so we’re really excited to be able to put plans in place now for Trek 24 and to be bringing the event to three different locations across the region for the very first time. We really hope people will put their lockdown walks to good use and get behind these treks to support our life-saving charity, especially as we move towards 24/7 helicopter operations this summer. There are three beautiful locations lined up right across the region our yellow helicopters cover, all of which will make for an exceptional Trek 24 challenge; depending on which type of route you’d like to walk. As part of Trek 24 we organise your transport to the start line after registration at the venue as well as refreshments along the way, including a hot meal at the end of the challenge, so all you have to think about is the challenge at hand and raising as much money as you can to help keep our helicopters flying. We can’t wait to be able to be reunited with our supporters in person and all events will follow the appropriate guidelines in place at the time.” For more information and to sign up to take part, go to: www.trek-24.co.uk
