Not Just Books Hello, hello! Tim here, from Not Just Books. Since joining the team in August last year I’ve had a great time meeting so many people in the shop, but as the name suggests it’s Not Just Books. Let me bring you into my world, a world of imagination. I’m an enthusiast of Role Playing Games, RPG for short. This is a type of storytelling game in which a group of people get together, one person takes on the mantle of the storyteller (Games Master), whilst the rest take on the role of the (player) characters. The Games Master sets the scene as the players describe what they do within the events unfurling around them. This feeds back into the storytelling, and around it goes until the ‘game’ is concluded. These games can run for just an evening, or it can continue at intervals over several weeks or longer. There are so many different genres to discover, something for everyone!
I am thoroughly looking forward to all the great RPG stuff this year at Not Just Books! We have a growing community of people, ranging from long-time players to newcomers making their early ventures into the fun of RPG. If you’re intrigued and would like to know more or get involved, then stop by the shop to register your interest! Tim enjoying a game of Call of Cthulhu upstairs in ‘The Den’ at Not Just Books
So far we have had a group playing ‘Call of Cthulhu’, a horror style RPG based in the world created by the author H.P. Lovecraft back in the 1920’s. Our first scenario successfully concluded shortly before Christmas and was great fun! We are starting a new story soon. Another group is undertaking a Dungeons and Dragons adventure, made ever more popular by the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’. Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy game set in a world of mysterious peoples, beasts and monsters! We’ve just started out: it’s immensely enjoyable and I’m eagerly looking forward to how it develops. We also have a one shot (single evening) foray into Alien: The Role Playing Game. It’s based on the novels and iconic movie franchise of the same name ‘Alien’. Set in the future, it’ll be interesting to see how the players deal with the likes of insidious mega The MulberryColonial REV Advert 7.qxp_Layout 12/05/2021 16:50 Page 1 corporations, Marines, androids 1and the infamous xenomorphs!
