David Recognised for Lifetime’s Work Local author and historian David Osborne has been honoured by Thetford Town Council and awarded the Freedom of Thetford in recognition of the dedication he has shown to the town. Over many years David has not only written 17 books on the history of Thetford but has also contributed greatly to the day to day life of our community in numerous ways. In the late 1980s David helped set up the Thetford Society, an organisation created to promote the town. Over several decades David has been collecting artefacts, cataloging and researching life in the town. More recently he has been keeping Thetford looking smart as part of the Sex, Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Weeding group. David has been involved with all three museums in the town. He was a founding member of the Charles Burrell Museum in 1991 and was heavily involved there for over 20 years, he supported Dad’s Army Museum and worked closely with Ancient House Museum helping with research, exhibitions and delivering numerous talks. In recent times David was central to the Thetford Remembers WW1 Project and his most recent series of books on the Pubs and Inns of Thetford have been a great success.

Readers of this magazine will instantly recognise David as the curator of our Past and Present page, beloved by many and a great example of David’s unstinting generosity for sharing his knowledge. Ancient House Museum Curator Oliver Bone said, “We are fortunate that the collective memory of the town has been so ably recorded for us by David Osborne. He has always shown great helpfulness, good humour, generosity with his time and public spiritedness in all our associations.” On behalf on Thetford Town Council, the Mayor, Cllr

Past & Present

David Osborne Over the years, the About Thetford magazine has been able to share a wonderful collection of images of Thetford thanks to the dedication of our local historian David Osborne. David put many hours into selecting the images and taking the present photos, and adding to his archive each month. We know from our readers that our Past and Present page has been one of the most popular in the magazine. We have chosen the image above this month as a tribute to David, our friend and collaborator. We will miss David, his passion for the town and it’s social history. David loved this photo. It was taken during the Thetford’s Great Festival, ‘All The Fun of The Fête’ 1914 event, a WW1 commemoration living history event in King’s House Gardens and part of the Thetford Remembers project. David as ever was keen to take part in the event and spent a happy afternoon running the skittle game, handing out bars of Caley’s Marching Chocolate as prizes.

New Art Commission At Thetford Forest As part of its centenary celebrations, The Forestry Commission has worked with artists Tom Piper MBE and Lisa Wright on a dramatic sculptural installation for Suffolk’s High Lodge in Thetford Forest. ‘Future Forest’ features ten life size figures, based on Classical motifs, placed within the landscape, representing custodians of the past looking over our forests. They act as a poignant reflection of the vital role that trees and woodlands play in protecting our natural environment and the next generation’s role as custodians of our future forests. Lisa Wright’s life-size sculptures take the form of Classical figures including Venus de Milo, the Three Graces, David, Hyman, Cupid and Daphne. These figures are made from bio resin, a greener alternative to traditional plastics due to its high level of plant based content and lower toxic emissions during the production process. Through their Classical character, these beautiful and youthful figures reflect the spirit of endurance that is embodied by forests: rooted in the past, relevant in the present and essential to our survival into the future. The custodians will be displayed in a series of six dramatic installations within the forest developed by Tom Piper, best known for the poppy installation he designed for the WW1 centenary commemoration, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red which was first installed at the Tower of London in 2014 and was seen by millions of people across the UK.

figure and its forest environment. The viewer can place themselves directly with each character to fully appreciate the beautiful fragility of the figures with their luminous tracery of Lisa’s paintwork.” Each individual element of this project is designed to raise awareness of the fact that resilient though they are, the forests of the future will not be able to survive and prosper unless they are sustainably managed: the responsibility for ensuring that this happens will be carried forward by future generations. In the one hundred years since the founding of the Forestry Commission after the First World War, the UK’s forests have grown and prospered. Today they manage over 1,500 woodlands and forests covering around 250,000 hectares spread from Northumberland to Cornwall, Shropshire to Norfolk. In recognition of this centenary milestone in the Forestry Commission’s history, Future Forest is both a celebration and a call to action, using drama and the age-old power of storytelling to instil within the public a desire to protect the forests.

Working in a forest environment for the first time, Piper’s innovative backdrops will form the settings within which the figures will be placed. Piper’s work will set the scene, starting a journey which visitors to Future Forest will be unveiled at High Lodge, Thetford the installation are encouraged to explore: the future of Forest on Thursday 3rd October 2019. It will open to the our forests, and their role within it. Describing his work, public on 4 October 2019 and will remain open until 30 Alli 2020. Out and About Thetford

Speech Day At TGS After several years at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Thetford Grammar School celebrated a year of academic and school achievements for the Senior School, back in town at the Carnegie Rooms. Change and new beginnings were highlighted by Mrs Maureen Eade, the Chairman, during her address as the school has once again returned to boarding after 70 years and has a number of international students. The school is currently ranked 36th in The Times school list. “Teachers have provided as always, outstanding teaching. We have increased our scholarships.” School Captain James Blackman talked about the school’s House System and the Stephen Spencer presents Jasmine Dawes the changes over the decades until the current house names Year 8 award for Academic Excellence were put in place in 1975. Another busy year of house competition has taken place with Millingtons crowned the champions for the 2018/19 year. In his annual report Mr Michael Brewer (The Head) talked of the school’s values; Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and how these have been demonstrated over the past year. The school has a strong charitable ethos and pupils have contributed to a wide variety of organisations including £2,000 raised by Kate and Sophie for Alzheimer’s Society. Vice-Captain Eleanor Pringle said, “learning to win with grace and modesty or becoming resilient is one of the things that makes the school so special.” 3 new prizes replaced individual subject prizes from year 7 to 12 alongside the year 13 subject prizes and the traditional school prizes, shields and trophies. Former Head of Modern Languages and 6th Form, Mr Stephen Spencer was welcomed back as Guest Speaker and presented the prizes, addressing the pupils he said, “Pleasure comes through hard work and I am pleased to see your phenomenal achievements”. New Cable Walk Success A brand new historical walk and talk for the town sparked the interest of visitors from as far as Bedford for its Heritage Open Day launch. The Henry Cable Walk & Talk is the latest offering from Leaping Hare CIC who provide the town’s Tourist Information Centre and promote the town as a destination. The story of Henry Cable has international significance as he became one of the First Fleet and a founding father of modern day Australia thanks to another Thetfordian, Thomas Paine. Thetford has several places of significance relating to the story and the group were The group outside Thetford Gaol where Henry Cable transported to 18th century Thetford due to the excellent was held during the Lent Asizes storytelling skills of Mike Wabe. “I really enjoyed the walk and talk. It’s been fascinating to find out more about the story of Henry Cable and Susanna Holmes. Mike did a great job of bringing the story to life and the site of where it happened.” Said one of the group. After visiting significant parts of the town centre the tour returned to the Methodist Church Hall for the talk part of the evening and the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session. One member of the group explained that they had friends from Australia who had visited them in Thetford not realising the Cable connection and were delighted to find the connection as they are Cable descendants. “I’ve done the Heritage and Ghost walks before, this is a really great addition and I’d really recommend it.” said Heather. The ever popular Ghost Walks return from October 11th, advanced booking essential. Silver Threads Celebrates 10th Anniversary Since the very first session in 2009, Silver Threads Over 60s group has seen its membership grow from 8 members to over 50 today. Created by Moya and Ray Brown, the social group meets every Tuesday afternoon at Cloverfields Community Church. “When we moved here I joined the church and at one meeting the then Bishop mentioned that we had groups for all ages except the over 60s, so I thought I’d start a club. I never imagined that it would grow into this!” explained Moya. “The Mayor at the time was Pauline Quadling, she gave me lots of advice and supplied the tea and biscuits to get us started off.” Sadly, Ray has since passed away, but with the support of Revd Helen Jary and Neil to name a few, Moya has continued running the group. The group provides an important lifeline to many and helps to combat social isolation, “It filled a gap of being a widow and making new friends,” explained Brenda, “I look forward to it ever week.” To celebrate the 10th anniversary 49 members enjoyed a tea party with live music from Brian Roy and a visit from the current Mayor, Cllr Brenda Canham. The Church was filled with laughter and singing as the members joined in with their favourite songs and enjoyed being together. “Silver Threads is a place of fun, laughter and good company. The members enjoy getting out and about, it’s a pleasure to do something that benefits so many folks in the community,” Revd Jary commented before one of the members added, “We love Moya, and Helen does good jokes, she is our very own Vicar of Dibley!” Moya was presented with flowers and gifts in recognition of her hard work running the group. Thanking everyone Moya said, “It’s such a lovely group, I’m so glad that I’m able to run it.” Silver Threads social group meets every Tuesday afternoon 2 - 4pm and costs £3 per person.

New Exhibition Opens The Mayor of Thetford joined the Chair of Breckland, Chair of Norfolk Joint Museums Committee and invited guests to a private view of the new British Studio Pottery exhibition at Ancient House Museum. Curated by Norfolk Museums Service Senior Curator Francesca Vanke, the exhibition has given visitors access to a collection normally only accessible at Norwich Castle. “The collection is small in number but great in quality. Recently gaps in the collection were filled by the generous donation of an anonymous Buddhist monk from London who frequently visited Norfolk and wanted to share his love of British Studio Pottery.” The exhibition features work from the 1870s up to the present day. Francesca continued, “They all vary in style but what they all have most in common is the shared love of materials and how things are made.” Annelise Lawrence, one of the guests is the niece of Agnete Hoy and keeper of her archive. “I spent a lot of time latterly with my aunt and it was always so interesting to hear her talk about her work. It’s always nice to see her work alongside her contemporaries, most of whom she knew very well.” Agnete’s story is one of 30 showcased in the exhibition which also features work by Bernard Leech, his son David alongside well known potters such as William de Morgan. John Ward speaking on behalf on the Museums Service said, “I’m really pleased we’re able to show these beautiful pots, thanks to the exhibition team and Arts Council England for funding exhibitions around the county.” For more Curator Oliver Bone with one of the handling objects in the new exhibition at Ancient House information please visit; www.museums.norfolk.gov Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 11

Studio Ceramics Exhibition Open Now Readers of About Thetford are most welcome to come and visit our new exhibition which celebrates the craft and art of ceramics. This show presents the very best in Norfolk Museums Service’s collection of British studio and art pottery. Many of the items on display are from a recent donation and are seen here together for the first time. Dating from the 1870s to the present day, the exhibition features 39 pieces made by 30 different makers. They include some of the leading names in ceramics over the past 100 years such as Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, Edmund de Waal and Kate Malone. The Museum team is really pleased to be able to show these fascinating and beautiful examples of the craft of the potter. The largest piece on show is a giant teapot by Kate Malone, who may be familiar as one of the expert judges in the BBC’s Great Pottery Throw Down TV series. Malone has added decorative insect and plant motifs to her teapot and observant visitors can see a ceramic insect climbing out of the spout. The display is a partnership between the Ancient House team and Francesca Vanke, Chief Curator of the Norfolk Museums Service and curator of the decorative arts collections. Funding for the exhibitions at Ancient House is provided by Arts Council England.

This month’s Thetford Face is Pete Twelftree. Pete is one of a handful of cordwainers in the country still producing historical footwear. Pete is also the proud owner of a Blue Peter badge! How long have you lived in Thetford? I’ve lived here since I was 11. We moved from Croydon in 1975 on a council exchange to Abbey Farm. I had a year at Abbey Farm School, where they recognised that I was dyslexic and made a big difference to my life. You then went onto Staniforth Secondary Modern School, did you enjoy your time there? The science blocks and metalwork rooms were really good. I always wanted to work with my hands and the school suited me for that. When I left I went into the RAF as an aircraft electrician for 18 months. What was it like growing up in the town in the 1970s? Most of the time I was in the forest, I used to go out on my pushbike. I hated school discos; they weren’t my thing. In my early 20s I used to go to the King’s Head with Iceni MCC, my bike club. I still like to go on a few rallies.

Pete, second from left (with goggles) at the market place during a town pram race in the 1980s

Have you always worked in the town? When I came out of the RAF, I got an apprenticeship at Travenol in electronics, then I studied mechanical engineering at King’s Lynn College before working at local firms such as Jeyes, Tulip (formerly Danepak) and back to Baxters

Pete in his workshop where he creates his handmade historical shoes

(formerly Travenol). I’ve been an engineer most of my working life. I also had a brief spell running my own business looking after machinery and British motorbikes (which is now my hobby) for a while. How did you get involved in shoe making? The shoemaking was a result of getting involved in re-enactment. My wife Sarah saw an English Civil War re-enactment in the town around 1997. She was really keen to get involved in something like that, but I wasn’t. Then I discovered a friend in my bike club did Viking to Norman. To keep the peace, I told Sarah if she made the costumes, I’d do it. Sarah got busy and created costumes for all 5 of us and we took part in Norman Rochester in 1998 after borrowing a lot of kit. I was put on the battlefield and that was it, I was hooked! I had some friends who organised re-enactor fairs and I used to help them out with their security. Through this I got to know a few of the traders including Morgan Hubbard of Plantagenet Shoes. How did you become a cordwainer? Morgan was looking to retire and although I knew we couldn’t live on the shoe money, I wanted to have a go. Morgan had originally worked for Startrite; he took me on, and I did a year long apprenticeship with him, learning the skills and trade each weekend. I took over Plantagenent Shoes in May 2008 and started to make shoes on my own. Sarah and I worked together to start with and

did the markets, often I would be in the workshop all evening and she would be sewing shoes in the house whilst looking after our daughters. It was hard work but worth it. I create shoes from the Roman period through to the 16th century using traditional methods including a pair based on shoes found on the Mary Rose. I also take bookings to bring cordwaining to life at events. Sarah and I created a Medieval tent which we use, I get into costume and demonstrate how hides of leather are turned into shoes. These days I mainly take commissions and have a 2 year waiting list. I really enjoy creating historical shoes and even provide a shoe exchange for very young reenactors as it can be so expensive to keep buying pairs when children’s feet grow so quickly.

A selection Pete’s beautifully crafted period shoes from his workshop demand How involved are you with the re-enactment community? When the shoes took off I started to slow down my re-enactment activities. I’ve done a bit of film work including a Channel 4 film, 1066 and I was once paid to go to France to fight as a Norman. I once spent a week at the Tower of London in late Norman kit with a group, greeting visitors. We were invited to the Ceremony of the Keys. Since then I’ve had training and become a regional trainer for fighting with weapons for re-enactors. Sarah and I did Kentwell Hall last year which was fun. We did spend many years re-enacting together as a family as the girls were growing up. These days I spend every other Saturday morning at Thetford Sword Club, HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) training with long swords at Breckland Sports Centre. They call me the resident Viking! How did you get involved in Blood bikes? I got involved around 2 ½ years ago. I came across Blood Bikes and thought I’d do something to help as we’re near hospitals and I like being on a bike. I did my advanced motorcycle licence which you need to take part and usually do 4 trips a month depending on how busy I am.

Pete has put his love of motorbikes to good use by becoming a volunteer for Blood Bikes

During the week we do the night runs and work across the full 24 hours during bank holidays. We deliver blood products and breast milk. It’s all voluntary and there a few people in Thetford who are involved. Most of the time I go to Addenbrookes and bring the deliveries to Thetford where I swap over with other drivers who then go onto the hospitals. On one occasion I was part of a chain where a mother provided her breast milk to her baby from Addenbrookes to Great Ormond Street where the baby had been taken. What do you love about living in Thetford? I love the forest and the common. When I came up from Croydon I just used to lose myself in the forest. Growing up on Abbey Farm was great for getting into the forest. I also love the wildlife. I had a job at Kilverstone Wildlife Park when I was at Staniforth, that’s where I got my nickname Little Pete from. We’re also not too far from the coast here. Discover A New Creative Hobby Sandra Roberts started as a Stampin’ Up Independent Demonstrator over 10 years ago after a career in finance, working in Barclays Bank in Thetford for many years. 4 years ago, she opened a studio and has since developed a thriving business, “I have strong connections with Thetford having been in the area for many years. My studio came about from a legacy from my Dad, he would have been really proud to see what I’ve achieved.” Using her studio Sandra offers workshops and craft retreats with a B&B option. Sandra says she has always been creative from a young age and has happy memories of crafting with her grandmother and aunt. “I’ve tried sewing, macramé and rug making, but paper crafting was always my favourite because of all the different techniques you can use.” Stampin’ Up appealed to Sandra because the range is so well co-ordinated. “They use great colours and the stamps, dies or punches work beautifully with the matching papers and embellishments”. Sandra holds regular workshops at Cloverfield Church on the 1st Wednesday of each month where you can get your creative juices flowing and create a set of 8 cards. Launching in October is the ‘Cards and a Cuppa’ taster sessions at the Charles Burrell Centre. Participants will be able to enjoy a hot drink whilst creating 2 cards for £5 including all materials. Sandra’s latest project is to create her own YouTube channel, Sandra’s Craft Studio. Here you will find demos, techniques, ideas to inspire for crafters of all ages. Dedicated crafters can also enjoy Sandra’s ‘Sunday Night Lives’ on her Facebook page StampandCraftStudio. “I also offer gift vouchers, these make a crafty evening the perfect gift for someone. I have a small local team covering Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire & Essex, if you have family or friends who may be interested in similar crafting events.”

Thousands Attend Community Day A community and business Centre in Thetford was a hive of activity on 1st September as more than two thousand people descended on the site for its annual Community Day. The Charles Burrell Centre based on Staniforth Road opened its doors to showcase the nearly 50 different tenants permanently based on site – a mixture of commercial tenants and charitable groups. They were joined this year by dozens of organisations operating across Thetford. In total, more than 70 different organisations attended this year. For the first time, a headline act was incorporated into the entertainment in the shape of Two Brothers Racing. They’re a racing stunt team consisting of Mark Van Driel (Vandal), Paul Todd and Katrina Van Driel. They performed two 30-minute shows for attendees using their stretched drift bikes and wowed the crowds with their skills.

Birdseye View Reveals Secrets Of The Past The term Aerial Archaeology might appear to be a contradiction. How can photographs taken hundreds of feet above the ground show what is beneath the surface? Expert on the subject Derek Edwards, speaking at Probus Club’s September meeting, explained how, illustrating his talk with a rich collection of photographs taken from the air. His fascinating insight into Aerial Archaeology, started with a potted history of flight, touching first on hot air balloons and pointing out that city dwellers in Norwich would have witnessed them taking to the skies as early as the late 18th century. Viewing the countryside from above brought an unexpected bonus for archaeologists, for amazingly it reveals tell-tale traces of human activity and the remains of earthworks and buildings not visible at ground level. With the development of photography these can be recorded in detail to help archaeologists in digs and investigating sites dating back thousands of years to the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron ages. Mr Edwards told Probus members how he has flown over most of Norfolk identifying and recording hundreds of sites. He began taking photographs with cheap 35mm camera but eventually used a much more costly professional large format camera. Over the years he has amassed a remarkable treasure of aerial photographs which are now held in Norfolk Museum Services archive at Gressenhall. The interesting talk provoked plenty of questions for Mr Edwards and members show their appreciation in the usual way.

Speaker Derek Edwards, left, shows his book ‘Norfolk from the Air’ to Probus members John Snow and Gerald Goucher

#See Me - Not All Disabilities Are Visible The #SeeMe campaign started this year. Set up as a non-profit group for women living with disabilities; termed physical, mental and quiet. In May we were awarded first prize in the Tesco’s Bags For Help which allowed us to progress with our work. We hold regular meet-ups every month and numbers are increasing. My reason for starting the campaign comes from my background of working within exercise referral and exercise therapy. I have worked with some amazing women who have transformed themselves despite living with disabilities. Following the birth of my daughter I experienced post natal depression. I had to close my fitness studio and it was the support of several women who helped me out of a very dark place. This fuelled my passion to help lift others and the #SeeMe campaign was born. I’ve recently opened my new clinic and hope that it’s a place where other women can flourish. Sunday 13th October, 12 - 3pm: Our first official #SeeMe Women’s Wellness Event! Our aim is to raise awareness of local services and support. #SeeMe is a non-profit campaign representing women with physical and mental disabilities but also ‘quiet’; something which is limiting the women to live in optimal health and

happiness. We take the notion that even broken crayons create beautiful pictures and want women to embrace their imperfectly perfect self. We will have various stalls including traditional medicine, alternative therapy, health & beauty, support groups, clubs and activities. A selection of guest speakers will also be attending. If you would like to book a stall at this event please contact us using the mobile below. We ask for a £15 donation to pay towards the cost of the event. If you cannot attend the event but would like to show support we are looking for raffle prizes and any donation would be greatly appreciated. Michelle - The Wellness Clinic Mobile: 07725 582817

Enjoyable Day Trip For U3A Members We welcomed two new members last month bringing our membership up to 400+. This is an amazing number especially as we have only been registered such a short time. The leaders of the day trip group recently organised another wonderful day. This time a coach to Wymondham Abbey, then steam train to Dereham complete with our own personal train guide. At Dereham lunch was on another train/carriage residing at the station, after that we were back on the coach to the Gressenhall Victorian Workhouse. There, we were invited onto a cart pulled by two Suffolk punch horses named Reggie and Remus. Reggie was named after Reggie Kray as he was born nearby at a prison where the Krays were once housed. After the ride we were given maps to walk through the farm and to the workhouse. In this area of Norfolk there were 22 workhouses with one in Thetford. It was such an interesting and informative afternoon, most certainly a place I would like to revisit. I believe it is worth joining our U3A to participate in the day trips. Our Emergency General Meeting takes place October 10th at noon, the upcoming meetings are on October 24th and November 28th. All meetings are at the Carnegie Room at 2pm. Everyone welcome. Free to Members, £2 for visitors.

West Norfolk Aviation Society At our September meeting in the Mundford Bowls Club, Steve, a WNAS member and pilot, gave a flying start to our autumn programme of presentations and activities with his account of post WWII British test and research aircraft. A Lancaster powered by two jet engines and two RR Merlins, the Short SB5, the RR Flying Bedstead and the Fairey Delta are just four of the many aircraft that some of us did not know about or had forgotten until Steve's lecturette. And that was just the first half of the evening! After the break, Steve showed and discussed some rare footage of the development of spy aeroplanes, including the Canberra and the U2. Thanks, Steve, you are already booked for next year! Although September's meeting was a hard act to follow, another of our members, Bob, will rise to the challenge with a talk called: ‘With my Head in the Clouds’ or some such. So, if you would like to join us on October 1st for a couple of hours, come to the Bowls Club just after 7pm. There is no charge for a first visit. Thetford Inner Wheel Cathy Witton as President presided over our first meeting at our new venue where plans were put in place for a Coffee Morning to raise funds for our charities. The Foodbank will receive donations from the club either direct or via Tesco’s box as we were told the charity is rather desperate after the summer holidays. The club is also collecting items, such as pencils, soap, books etc. to be sent abroad in what are known as Joy and Roy bags. After the visit to the new EACH hospice ‘The Nook’ it was decided to send a donation to buy 10 fluffy bath towels which were amongst the items required for the new venture. A generous donation was sent to the fund to help the disaster in the Bahamas. These donations are made possible by the proceeds of our fundraising efforts and we are very grateful to those who support us. At the meeting we were informed our District Chairman is supporting Teenage Cancer Trust and the Association President Riding for the Disabled. Marian de Bass, Club Correspondent

This autumn the local group of the WEA (Workers Educational Association) are hosting a series of talks by Brian Statham on the social history of America c1850-c1950 – but viewed through the prism of popular music. This should be both interesting and entertaining – we don’t do “homework” and there is no expectation of prior knowledge of the subject, so you are very welcome to join us. There will be 8 sessions running from 10.30 to 12.30 on Monday mornings in the Methodist Church Hall on Tanner St. with the first meeting on 7th October. The fee for the course is £61.60 but this is waived for those on Pension Credit or similar. More information and enrolment can be found at www.wea.org.uk or by phoning 0300 303 3464. Life-Saving Defibrillators For All Norfolk’s Recycling Centres Every one of Norfolk’s 20 recycling centres now has a newly installed defibrillator on site for the very first time. The life-saving equipment will benefit communities and all the people and staff on the busy sites right across the county. Councillor Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “I’m very proud that this life-saving equipment is not only set to benefit people using our recycling centres, also those that live and work nearby. These 20 new machines will increase the number in the county and bring defibrillators to areas that have not had one until now.” The East Anglian Air Ambulance is the current chosen charity for the 11 reuse shops at Norfolk's recycling centres. Patrick Peal, CEO of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We now attend more cardiac arrests than any other type of emergency, but often our team gets there too late to make a difference. The people that stand the best chance of survival are those that have CPR and a shock from a defibrillator within minutes of their heart stopping. Having 20 more defibrillators available in Norfolk at these centres is a brilliant initiative that will – without a doubt – help to save lives. We’re very proud to be the benefitting charity of the reuse shops and congratulate Norfolk County Council on installing these life-saving pieces of kit.” The purchase of the defibrillators was approved by county councillors in November 2018 and saw the first one put in place at the Mile Cross recycling centre in Norwich in April this year. The work is now complete after the last machine was fitted at Strumpshaw recycling centre last week. All the defibrillators are registered with the ambulance service and site staff have been trained to use them in emergency situations.

Monksgate Yard Sales In spite of having to close down early because of an unexpected heavy shower, with the many generous gifts, cakes and donations, the final figure for the 2019 Monksgate Yard Sales is now £860! As we already have some money in the CRUK bank account we are now in a position to send the second £1000 of 2019 to CRUK. So a big thank you to all who contributed in any way to this outstanding success including our valued friends at About Thetford magazine. Rus & Sue Webber

Have You Considered An Allotment? The growing season may be winding down but this month is the beginning of the allotment year with rents due now. If you apply now, you could get a plot that is being given up and is fairly weed-free. A full size plot costs around £50 and a half plot around £30. Contact Thetford Town Council for more information. On a new plot or old, this is the time to clear the land and rough dig it to allow the weather to loosen the texture for the spring. Another end-of-season job is trimming hedges and road-side bushes. Hedges will not grow for a few months so tidying up now ensures they look good right through the winter. If you walk anywhere, you will know how bushes and trees at the side of the pavement hang down after rainfall, just at the height to slap you in the face often enough. A trim would be much appreciated by us pedestrians. Back in the garden, leaves will be blowing in from all directions now and the lawn is best kept clear. Worms take down a few but most gardens have areas where leaves collect and, once they get damp, they form a layer that blocks off the sunlight from the grass. Although it is tough stuff, grass will yellow and die if there is no light. In addition the leaves can be mixed with other material on the compost heap to help supply you with barrow loads of free compost in the spring. 220 litre compost bins can be purchased from the Recycling Centre for the reduced price of £11.99. If you like garlic, this is the time to plant the cloves so that roots establish before the frosts. They are quite greedy plants so need the ground to be well fertilised. Plant them below the surface like daffodil bulbs – and mark the area as you will not see anything for a while. Thinking of daffodils, if you plant a few pots with half a dozen dwarf daffs each, you will be able to move them round your garden for instant brightness as needed

next February. Once they’ve flowered, you can sink the clump into the ground and these tough little fellows will come up in following years. Daffodils have the advantage over tulips in that they don’t appeal to muntjac – quite important in this area. Seed catalogues are out now and you can start dreaming of great things next year. If you had any particular successes or failures this year, note any names you want to remember. I tried a different runner bean but shall revert to Lady Di for next year as it is the best I know for remaining stringless to a reasonable size. In the flower garden I have been amazed at the show from a packet of Godetia seed. Lots of colour for a few pence and they seem pretty drought-tolerant.

This month’s meeting is on Thursday 31st October in the United Reformed Church at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start with the fun of the Chairman’s quiz to look forward of Brandon 1/8 AD.qxp_Layout toBetts – always a great night’s entertainment. 1 09/04/2019 16:3 Happy Gardening! Sue Pilgrim

King Of The Birds Next time you have a twenty pence piece in your hand, take a moment to feel the weight of it. Not much to it, is there? At five grams, it weighs about the same as Britain’s smallest bird, the Goldcrest. As their name suggests, these tiny forest denizens have a bright orange-yellow stripe along the centre of their crown, which probably gives rise to the name ‘king of the birds’ in European folklore. However, this feature can be hard to see as they flit about restlessly in trees and bushes. Goldcrests are at home in wooded habitats and breed commonly in Thetford Forest. However, autumn sees them stretching their wings: not only do locally bred individuals join flocks of tits and other small birds in hedgerows and other less-wooded places, but Goldcrests from Scandinavia and even as far as western Russia arrive for the winter. October to early November is the key time for birds to reach our shores from the northeast, and this sees sightings at non-forest locations – such as BTO’s Nunnery Lakes reserve – reach their annual peak. Gardens can host Goldcrests too, and observations from BTO’s year-round Garden BirdWatch (GBW) scheme confirm that now is a great time of year to look out for them. They still only appear on 1 in 20 GBW submissions though, even in autumn, so they remain a fairly uncommon garden visitor for most of us. Goldcrests feed largely on insects, spiders and other small invertebrates so they don’t usually come in to bird feeders, though evergreen trees such as Leylandii often attract them. Their high-pitched, squeaking calls often give away their presence in such thick cover, though it is sadly a sound that’s often impossible for people with poor high-frequency hearing to detect. Despite their tiny size, Goldcrests are remarkably cold-tolerant and employ a number of strategies to stay warm on cold nights. In prolonged periods of cold weather though,

Goldcrest by Graham Catley/BTO

‘glazing’ can present a particular problem for them. This is where rain freezes or snow melts and refreezes on the ends of branches, which makes it much harder for these insectivorous birds to find their favoured food. Whilst Goldcrest pips Wren to the title of Britain’s smallest bird, it does share the crown with its rarer relative, the Firecrest. We’re lucky to have a reasonably good breeding population of these little gems in Thetford Forest but they are still very much in the minority, so if you’re looking at a tiny ‘crest’, it’s much more likely to be a Goldcrest. New Recycling Opportunity In Thetford An innovative recycling programme has been developed by Terracycle - recycling the ‘non-recyclable’ within the community. This new initiative is enabling businesses to reuse as well as recycle, from coffee granules to contact lenses through the support of conscientious companies. Do your bit to address the plastic waste problem we’ve heard so much about recently and make Thetford a more environmentally friendly place to live. By increasing how much plastic you recycle you can save tonnes of waste from landfills and incinerators each month. Two sites in Thetford town centre have recently signed up to provide drop off points for materials not normally recycled. King Street Baptist Church is a collection point for cake, biscuit and cracker wrappers and oral care products, the Guildhall Tea Room is a collection point for crisp packets. To recycle oral care products please remove as much toothpaste from the tube as possible. Dental floss and containers, denture tablet and adhesive packaging, toothpaste pumps, mouthwash plastic bottles and battery toothbrushes can not be recycled as part of this programme. Only flexible plastic can be recycled as part of the biscuits and snacks programme, cardboard packaging can still be recycled through your black bin

A selection of wrappers that can be recycled at King Street Baptist Church

at home. Please ensure all crisp packets are fully empty before dropping off at the recycling point. ‘Cake, biscuit and cracker wrappers’ – includes the outer wrapper for cakes and biscuits, the inner wrapper inside boxes and individual wrappers around cakes or biscuits, any brands. NO cardboard or hard plastic. ‘Oral care products’ – includes old toothbrushes, electric toothbrush heads, finished toothpaste tubes, packaging from toothbrushes & toothpaste – any brand. ‘Crisp packets’ – any brand empty crisp packets. Local Schools Encouraged To Apply For Free Outdoor Learning Resources As children across the country return to the classroom, local schools are being encouraged to apply for up to £500 worth of free outdoor learning resources to allow youngsters to get hands on with nature. Applications for the Local School Nature Grants are open from now up until the 22nd November 2019 from the charity Learning Through Landscapes, which is distributing £550,000 of funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, with funds being awarded from Postcode Local Trust. Through the programme, Learning Through Landscapes wants to transform the way we currently think of outdoor education and show the learning and play potential that exists within all school grounds regardless of their setting and outdoor spaces, empowering teachers to be able to take the teaching of all curriculum subjects outdoors. As well as receiving up to £500 worth of outdoor resources of their choosing, school staff will also receive a two-hour training session on how to get the most out of the equipment. The learning resources and the training sessions available are entirely customisable; meaning infant, primary and secondary schools can choose which items will best suit their learners and the setting that they will be delivered in. The programme is also open to special schools and pupil referral units. Applications are being actively encouraged from schools whose pupils are aged 5+ and are passionate about making environmental improvements for the benefit of their pupils, staff and the community. Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Given that children in Britain spend an average of just 16 minutes a day exploring in parks and

the countryside, I’m delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery are supporting this programme enabling children of all ages to get outside and I’d urge schools to take advantage of this opportunity and get an application in.” For more information and to apply for funding, please visit Learning through Landscapes’ website: www.ltl.org.uk/projects/ local-school-nature-grants

Smooth Operator This time of year is the perfect time to think about removing unwanted hair permanently. IPL technology is an advanced treatment and works on treating dark hairs. As long as the hairs are darker than is skin the treatment will be successful. The hairs need to be in the active phase of growth in order to destroy the root. Only 30% of hairs are in the growing stage at any one time and so several treatments are needed between 4 to 12 weeks apart depending on the area of the body and the growth rate. We use the ellipse system of IPL and have had several machines over the past 18 years as we upgrade to newer, more advanced machines. We have been really pleased with the results of this treatment, not only do the hairs not need to be grown to long ( we shave the area so the energy goes into the root) but we can also use it to treat, acne, facial thread veins, skin rejuvenation for lines and wrinkles and rosacea. It’s important to wear an SPF 30 whilst undergoing treatment as it can make skin photo sensitive.

Breckland Cats Protection We at Cats Protection think we have the best job in the world. We get to foster delightful kittens and care for lovely cats who get a second chance at a fulfilling life. Archie was found on a grass verge in Mildenhall in January and it was thought he had been hit by a car. Archie was alive but unresponsive, very dehydrated and full of infection and cat flu. Fortunately, Archie tested negative for Feline Aids and Leukaemia and his liver and kidneys were functioning well. A few days later, Archie was neutered and had to have an eye removed as it was so badly infected. When Archie came into our care he weighed about 3kg, half what he should have. He was fed regular small meals along with antibiotics and eventually began to look a little better. With some of his strength returned, Archie revealed his true personality, and he did not like people! As his health improved, he became grumpier and grumpier. What to do with him? His vet’s bills were extremely high, but he couldn't be homed as he was so unfriendly (despite being stunningly beautiful). Once he was back to a healthy weight, we advertised him as a farm/stable cat and were delighted when he was offered a home in Shadwell, sharing a stable with a one-eyed horse. Archie was kept inside for about 3 weeks, so that he could get used to his new surroundings before being let outside. All was well until about 5 weeks later when Archie suddenly disappeared. We were all distraught, as we didn't know if Archie could feed himself with only one eye.

the vet for another course of antibiotics. The lady at the stables was reluctant to have him back, so after much discussion, it was decided that Archie should be released within one of our fosterer’s grounds. The freedom suits him much better, and he regularly comes back for food. A happy ending to a very exciting story! If you would like to make a donation to help cats like Archie, please call the number below. New opportunity for a dream business Starting a new business in uncertain times might have deterred quite a few people but local businessman Hassan Mhamood is not one to shy away from a challenge. Hassan is now celebrating after his new showroom opened in Stephenson Way, Thetford and is quite literally running a dream business. “I wanted a change in direction, I’ve always been a bit entrepreneurial, my Dad is a market trader and has been in the town and Bury St Edmunds market for many years, so I’ve always been around retail. For me it was finding the right line and making it sustainable. Everyone needs a bed, and what’s really great is that most are still made in England.” Former Rosemary Musker High School pupil Hassan started his business, Best Beds Direct online earlier this year, following his initial success the next step was to create a showroom where people could try out the products and enjoy a personal service. “Everyone in Thetford likes a family business and I want to offer the local community a great deal so they can shop locally. I’ve made sure we have good value quality products in stock for our customers. I did my research, visited trade shows and factories, sourcing some great beds. I’ve gone for brands which people may not have heard of, but it means people will get better value.” Hassan continued. Best Beds Direct are the exclusive stockists of MLily and Healthopedic Beds. MLily create hybrid mattresses which have a unique feel when you lie down. These mattresses feature a cooling gel that doesn’t overheat the bed and a removeable cover that can be washed at 30º. Healthopedic Zero gravity mattresses give a sense of weightlessness and pressure retention. Best Beds Direct also stocks Myers beds, a local company based

Parkrunner Of The Month Meet our parkrunner of the month Ryan Watson. Ryan is a regular visitor to Thetford parkrun and can be seen running with his mother or more regularly running with his grandfather Geoffrey Herschell. Ryan is currently 10 years old and will be celebrating his 11th birthday in November. Ryan is looking forward to turning 11 because it will mean he can run parkrun on his own. Ryan's first parkrun was in August 2018 and he took 49 minutes and 50 seconds to complete the 5k route. Ryan has improved his fitness and his fastest time to complete the 5k was in July 2019, finishing in 28 minutes and 54 seconds. Ryan has completed 3 virtual 10k events, (run a 6.1 miles in your own time, away from race conditions). He was first place in the Family Fiesta junior run, 2018 and Lotus car event 2019. Ryan usually runs with his grandfather but occasionally the three generations, including his mother can be seen together at Thetford. Ryan has volunteered 11 times, including taking photographs of the event. Ryan's most favourite volunteering task is to marshal. Looking to the future, Ryan's goals are to achieve a 25 minute 5k time and to achieve 50 parkruns in 2020.

Tournament Raises Chairty Funds

Golfing Champions Crowned

Thetford Short Mat Bowls Club recently hosted The Barry Barsby Memorial Trophy tournament at the Charles Burrell Centre. The tournament is held in memory of Barry who was well known in Thetford at Barsby Butchers and also in the world of darts and more recently, bowls. Barry, who passed away in 2016, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 49, but managed to keep it under control for many years.

Jess Dixon won Thetford Golf Club's recent Ladies' Championship for the fifth time with a hard-fought 3 & 1 win over 13-year-old Nellie Ong. Jess, who plays off two, is only 22 herself but she had to play some of her best golf to overcome teenager Nellie. It was nip and tuck for the first nine holes and remained all square. Jess took the lead on the back nine and held on to win on the 17th green after a fine contest.

The Krumrine Trophy involves four men and four women who qualify for the knock-out stages and in an all-female final Jan Bone beat Barbara Bailey at the 20th hole. Boudica Backdraft For all of you that came to the Annual Community Day at Charles Burrell Centre, on Sunday 1st September you may have stumbled across our event on the back field called ‘Boudica backdraft’. You know, the part of the field that had the 6.5 tonne lorries, Giant Tyre Wheels, ‘A’ frames and all the other gruelling stuff that the event co-ordinator, Rob Breen, had managed to make in time for this team event! The event was a taster run for a competition that will be running next June. It brings male and females together to work in a team of 4 and to use their strength, power, endurance and teamwork ability to ultimately win what can only be known as ‘The Hybrid Showdown’. Athletes were invited down to participate in the full day event and take on 5 tough workouts which would see them climbing the leader board and fighting for first place! Rob, as well as myself and many other competitors are part of the Fire Service, next years event will be held so that up to 40 teams can enter and profits raised will be going to the Fire Fighters Charity. Training days will be commencing soon and will include an array of weird and wonderful kit, movements and technical building blocks to enable any team a chance at competing for the win! If this is something you feel you’d be interested in, then drop me an email and we can talk through it. Even if confidence is an issue, you can commit to training days without pressure to compete. Just get a feel for the environment, lifting and shifting oddly weighted objects and ultimately making fitness fun, not to mention the great people you’ll meet along the way! Boudica Backdraft have recently started Facebook and Instagram pages for you to follow all the stuff that will be happening in the years to come, check them out and follow the movement. England Debut For Archy

Thetford Dolphins

A dream came true for local lad Archy Stannard when he represented England at the 39th National Skeet Home Countries International Tournament in County Donegal, Ireland. 6 teams, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Jersey competed across two days in a series of single and paired clay pigeon shoots. Archy, 17, from Rushbrook was the youngest member of the England Junior Squad and has been shooting for 4 years.

Thetford Dolphins had 13 swimmers travel to Norwich UEA for The Boudicca Open and returned home with an impressive 11 new club records, 10 1st places and 22 personal bests from 57 swims.

“When you put on that red jacket, everything changes, it’s been my dream to represent England since I started shooting.” Archy said his first tournament was a good experience, although he was disappointed to come second as a team. England narrowly lost out to the Republic of Ireland by 4 points. “I shot consistently across the competition and my coach was happy with my debut. He’s been through the same experience so knows the disappointment when it doesn’t go your way. My dream is to be the Home International Champion”. Archy would like to thank his sponsors Shadwell and Pearson Capital Projects for their support.
