It’s our Birthday! This year Zaks are celebrating two very special birthdays. The first being our 40th and the second being our 1st birthday of opening the newest addition to our family in Thetford. We love being part of the neighbourhood and it has been a fantastic year. If you didn’t know, we are now serving breakfast at Zaks Thetford where you can indulge in an all American breakfast experience. As part of our birthday celebrations we are asking our customers to share the love of their most memorable ‘Zaks Moments’ and play a part in our double birthday. Across our four diners in Norwich, Poringland and Thetford, we want customers past and present to tweet and post on social media about their favourite Zaks experiences so they can create a digital scrapbook. The five top ‘Moments’ chosen by Zaks will earn their owners a pair of tickets to the brand’s official 40th birthday party later this year. We’ve obviously got our own favourite pictures and stories from days gone by, but it’s our customers’ favourite ‘Zaks Moments’ we’re interested in seeing. Customers can share their favourite Zaks Moments by posting on the Facebook page or using #zaksmoments on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr or YouTube.

Community spirit motivates group to raise funds for good causes About Thetford recently met with a group of residents who will be walking 93 miles to raise money for charity. Calling themselves the ‘Thetford 93’, a group of friends will be walking the 93 miles of the Angles Way. Starting in Great Yarmouth on the 27th August and trekking across the county, arriving back in Thetford some 24 hours later.

The Thetford 93 Team

The group have planned the event as part of the Thetford’s Great Festival taking place at the end of August. There’s currently 22 people signed up to take part, but organisers have opened it up so that anybody can join in. Thetford 93 are fundraising for West Suffolk Hospital and the newly established Thetford Boxing Club

travel to Attleborough to take part in the popular Attleborough Boxing Club but there’s been a need to provide a facility locally as many children struggle to attend because of transport issues. One of those taking part is Jody Twomey. He said; “The sky’s the limit in terms of how much we would like to raise. It would be great if we raised more than last year so that we can support both of these very worthwhile causes”. Last year, the same group undertook the Three Peaks challenge - climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales - all within 24 hours. The £5,500 raised was used to support the Rainbow Ward at West Suffolk.

Mark Dean, one of the organisers said; “We are all proud of Thetford - it’s the place we call home. We think there’s fantastic community spirit here and we want to give something back. Last year, we found that we had a really great time fundraising and it gave us all the chance to catch up with one another”.

Another one of those taking part is Richard Flowers. He explained that people can get involved and support the group by purchasing merchandise as well; “We’ve had a logo produced which shows some of the key landmarks that we will pass along the 93 miles. We’ve used this to create t-shirts and mugs which are for sale at the Leaping Hare Tourist Information Centre”.

The group explained that they wanted to support the new boxing club as it was bringing an important new facility to people in Thetford. Many of those taking part in the walk have been involved in boxing activities and were keen to provide that opportunity for other youngsters. Many young people from Thetford currently

Out & About Thetford

New Book Launch for local Historian With summer fast approaching there’s been a wealth of activity around the town. On April 12th About Thetford was delighted to be invited to one of Thetford’s oldest pubs to see local historian David Osborne launch his latest book. The Black Horse Thetford, is the first in a series David is planning about the town’s historic inns. Originally publicans Terry & Pam Gilman had asked David just to create a portfolio of the pub. Speaking about the book Terry said “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to do this, David found out so many stories that it had to become a book.” David is well known for his love of the town and uncovering interesting gleanings from the past. One of the most macabre facts David discovered was the use of the pub as a Coroner’s court, including the inspection of body parts. David presented the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Robert Kybird with a copy of his book, who then entertained the audience with his own recollections and talked about his family connections to the Black Horse.

New Exhibition of Dads Army Film Props Following the success of the new Dads Army film in February, the Dads Army Museum in Thetford has opened a temporary exhibition in the former Cosy Carpets building in St Nicholas Street. Fans will be delighted to see a wide range of props used in the film that were donated to the museum. A small team of eager volunteers including Stuart Wright, Peter Jones, Phil Pearson, Bob Breen & Tim Edwards worked tirelessly to create displays including Dolly’s spy suitcase used in the film by Catherine Zita Jones, The Swallow Bank sign, costumes and technical drawings. Highlights of the exhibition include a lifesize inflatable tank and signed photos of the cast.

The exhibition will be open on Saturdays throughout the summer 12 noon—2pm, admission fee £2 adults, children free. Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Jack Pilling Art Gallery - Outing

Link-Up

We are taking bookings for a coach trip to Patchings Art and Design Centre in Nottingham on Sunday 12th June. Coach tickets are £10 each and you pay your entrance fee on arrival at the Centre, concession tickets are available at the gate.

Link-Up is a Thetford-based charity which provides a free fortnightly talking newspaper to anyone who is blind or partially sighted. Each Listener receives a Boombox on which to listen to the newspaper. The newspaper arrives in the post on a USB memory stick. When the Listener has finished listening, they pop the USB back in the plastic envelope in which it arrived, turn the address label round and put it in a post box. Our Home Visitor will call at the recipient's home to deliver and demonstrate the Boombox, and provide information on our service. And it is all free to the Listener. You can contact by telephone on 01842 755131 or via email: contact@linkupbreckland.org.uk

The coach leaves the Guildhall prompt at 7.30am and we return at approximately 8pm. There are free demonstration of paintings, jewellery, pottery and photography and guest artists. If you would like to join us please book your seats with Pam in the Jack Pilling Art Gallery, the seats are going very well so book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to you joining us. We have had good weather and great fun on the last 3 occasions so I can't see this one being any different. The journey does take two hours so we can safely stop for half an hour for a break. As this is the last day of the displays there are reductions on the art materials and displays of all sorts including photography. A lovely way to spend a Sunday in June. Pam Goveia, Administrator

Thetford Inner Wheel

The Curtains & Blinds Lady

Jenny Childerhouse and Marian de Bass (pictured below) represented Thetford Inner Wheel at the annual conference of the Inner Wheel Clubs of Great Britain and Ireland with over 2000 other members. This was held in Glasgow in early April. They were lucky enough to attend the Reception in the City Chambers in George Square hosted by the Lord Provost who happens to be a lady this year! The clubs have raised about £1.5 million for charities at home and abroad in the last year. A truly amazing amount. The charities ranged from Parkinsons’, Marie Curie to ‘School in a Bag’ and many others. The last evening was celebrated with a traditional ceilidh when the dance floor was packed. Next year’s conference will be held in Nottingham.

to allow for the amount of rain we get this month – a really high cut will limit browning if we run into weeks of drought.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes - May If we’re going to have two bank holiday Mondays in one month, May is a good choice as far as gardeners are concerned. The ground is surely warm enough even for runner beans by the end of the month and if you have a sheltered spot it may be worth taking the risk of putting frost-tender plants out at the beginning. You can pick up some plants at our stall outside St.Cuthbert’s on the morning of Saturday 7th May – and we’d be glad to have any spares you can donate. Profits will be divided between St.Nicholas Hospice and Club funds. Well done to all the exhibitors at the Spring Show in the Methodist Hall. In the end the daffodils were splendid as usual and there was a fine show of tulips too. The culinary section looked delectable and who could fail to be charmed by the Easter bonnets! This is a new venue for the show and it looks as if it is an easier place for people to get to and see what’s going on. This is the month to divide primulas as they go over and hostas as they begin their display. If you trim back aubretia and alyssum you will encourage new growth and more flowers as well as keeping the plants looking neat. Planning ahead, you could sow seed for Wallflowers and Sweet Williams for next year’s display. Try to resist trimming back the leaves of spring bulbs – in fact give the plants a liquid feed to help the formation of big flowering bulbs. In the vegetable garden, use every spare moment for hoeing to prevent weeds from getting started. Your potatoes should be earthed up so that the crop is not spoiled by exposure to light and, if you find you have not planted all the tubers, put them in now and they will race away trying to catch up with the early planting. Most vegetable seeds can be planted now; ideally try to sow small quantities of carrot and salad crop seeds every fortnight so that you get a succession of young vegetables to enjoy. Keep mowing the lawn – once a week is ideal as this is the time grass is making a lot of growth. Frequent cutting will encourage young bright leaves and stop the plants running to seed. Feed the lawn if you have not already done so and adjust the height of the mower blades

The subject for the talk on the 26th is “Brandon’s Involvement in WWI” with Darren Norton. Non-members are welcome to these monthly meetings which are held in the United Reformed Church at 7.30pm. This will be a good occasion to book a place on the annual outing. This year we are fortunate enough to have a tour of King’s Seeds in the late afternoon, preceded by a trip to Green Island Gardens. The cost is £21 for the coach, entries AND lunch – what a bargain! Sue Pilgrim

Larry Gray & Sons Fun Fairs Apologies that the planned Fun Fair dates for April as advertised needed to be cancelled. This was due to bad weather and Melford Common being too waterlogged. We will be back in Thetford from Wednesday 22nd June through to Sunday 26th June. Best wishes, Larry

Thetford Open Gardens 2016 Thetford Open Gardens is celebrating 10 years supporting St Nicholas Hospice Care on Sunday June 26th 2016. Our aim is to raise £10,000 for our tenth year. So we are beginning our celebrations in May by having a plant stall on May 7th outside St Cuthbert's Church. This will start to build our funds and enable many other gardens in Thetford to bloom beautifully throughout the summer! Then on Saturday June 25th, there will be a concert in the garden of Lake House. The Thetford Singers and Thetford Voices will perform along with musicians from the Thetford Academy. The Honington Military Wives Choir will also be included in the concert. This concert will have a free entry, but we will of course be rattling the donation boxes for St Nicholas Hospice Care. So, do put these dates in your diary and come and enjoy the pastoral delights of our town over the weekend of June 25th/26th. More information in our programme, which will be on sale in the middle of May.

Town Centre Floral Hanging Baskets 2016

Thetford has become well known for the fabulous display of flowers and inviting town centre in the summer due to the annual display of hanging baskets. Although many towns are making cutbacks, with the help of local residents and businesses Thetford Town Council are striving to keep this wonderful tradition alive. The Thetford Business Forum have become an official sponsor of the 2016 hanging baskets. If this is something you are interested in, please contact the Town Clerk. We are also continuing with the traditional donations. If you would like to make a donation towards a hanging basket the cost is set at £35 for this year, however we welcome any contributions towards the cost of the baskets. There will be a roll of honour outside the Town Council Offices at Kings House displaying the names of everyone who participates in the scheme This could be a great way of marking a birthday or anniversary by having a basket of flowers in honour of a loved one. If you would like to join in the campaign, please fill in the slip below detailing the name of the person, Business or Club to be displayed in the roll of honour. Planning a Wedding

Halcyon Days

Spring always seems to be the time couples start planning weddings. I suppose because they visit several wedding fayres at this time even though it might be the wedding is not until much later in the year. Anyway, we have to start somewhere!

Skin Care & Laser clinic

IPL Hair Removal

Many of our clients visit us for various types of treatments and need advice on how to get the best from their treatments and the timescale involved to book between visits to the salon. For example facials are great to have prior to a wedding but ideally we would recommend planning several months before and having a facial every month over a 5/6 month period. That way the therapist gets used to treating your skin and we can design the treatments around your lifestle. Stress plays a big role in affecting all of our lives and planning a wedding or any big event is no exception. Also, our clients may need body waxing and this is best done with the right amount of weeks in between ( 4 - 6 ) to get maximum benefits.

Nails and feet need to be kept in order too with manicure & Pedicures usually at 4-6 week intervals. Planning extra treatments such as lash tinting and brow tinting all need to have a patch test carried out prior each treatment. The tint usually lasts 4-6 weeks. Bridal make up is best practised about a month before, really to make sure you are happy with it and get use to wearing some if you don’t normally, especially the lipstick. It should be kept as natural as possible with colours to flatter the skin tones. This is not something that we offer in our skincare centre.

and remove dead skin cells to give a soft glowing skin. 5. Skin conditions: As it is natural antiseptic turmeric is fantastic for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Both these conditions can be itching and dry. Applying this topically with milk will soothe the skin of irritation and reduce redness and inflammation. 6. Dry cracked heels: Turmeric has excellent healing properties. If you suffer with dry cracked heels or just wish to get your feet flip flop ready. Apply a mixture of 3 spoons of powder with a few drops of coconut oil and apply directly to heels and leave for 15-20 minutes. Rinse off and repeat on a regular basis to gain full benefits. With all those benefits in mind, we should all be able to try at least one and treat our skin or hair to the fantastic benefits that this golden spice has to offer.

Spice up your life! Welcome to this month’s “Beauty Geek column”. I want to focus on the golden spice “Turmeric” and share some of the great benefits it can have on different areas of your body. Without spending too much money and using a small amount of time, you can enjoy the wonders of this spice. 1. Pigmentation: In order to remove skin tanning pigmentation, apply a small amount of turmeric powder and mix with lemon or cucumber juice. Apply directly to affected area(s) and leave for 2030 minutes and wash off. This should be repeated regularly to gain the benefits and SPF applied in between treatments. 2. Removal of facial hair: You can make a facial scrub to use on the affected areas of the face using kasturi turmeric with chickpea (gram flour). Applying this will inhibit the growth of facial hair if applied consistently every month. 3. Natural hair dye: The yellow hue in the powder makes a wonderful dye for fabrics as well as a natural dye to brighten up hair colour. Combined with other yellow coloured herbs and flowers such as saffron, calendula and chamomile tea. Boil this mixture and, after cooling, pour it over your head. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes and wash off to get a vivid colour. 4. Removes dead skin cells to exfoliate: Make a paste using turmeric and gram flour with water and apply over the body. Scrub gently whilst taking a bath. Doing this 1-2 per week with soften the skin

As usual, I would love to hear if you have tried and tested anything I have mentioned. Please email your stories to: caroline@steppingstonestrainingacademy.co.uk

Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting at the Captain Mainwaring statue on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 8th May at 11am. The walk lasts about 90 minutes but recently our walkers have wanted to go on a bit longer; it’s down to you! We’ll be walking along the river, looking for birds and other wildlife. Everyone is welcome, from expert to beginner and the walks are aimed at adults and families with budding young naturalists. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome!

The walks are turning out to be a delightful, informal way of getting out and engaging with nature, sharing wildlife stories and just having a chat so if you’re single, a couple, or a family, we look forward to seeing you there to help us add to our tally!

There is always something to see and at this time of year, much of our time has been dedicated to listening to birdsong. It’s a great opportunity to learn about bird songs and calls...don’t worry if you don’t know any; we can start with the basics! April’s songsters included chaffinches and goldfinches, nuthatches, wrens, blackbirds and song thrushes. Tits were very active and vocal and included great, blue, marsh, coal and long-tailed tits. We were able to listen to a chiffchaff singing, one of the first of the spring migrants to arrive and next month, we’ll have plenty to see and chat about as there will have been an influx of other species that visit us for the summer. How about a migration theme for May’s walk?

There is no need to book but for more information, contact 01842 753732 or email us: thebrecks@rspb.org.uk Murray Brown RSPB Brecks Community Engagement Officer

Made

Drake mallards were looking very handsome with their iridescent plumage literally gleaming in the sunshine and we were able to compare the plumages of herring and lesser black-backed gulls. Both green and great spotted woodpeckers were about, along with jackdaws and jays. We frequently saw both sparrowhawks and buzzards spiralling up on the thermals and at times several buzzards were seen together as they displayed. We were lucky enough to find a treecreeper’s nest and were able to clearly see the birds as they busied themselves around the nesting cavity (from a distance so as not to disturb the birds of course). Star of the show was, for many, the robin who poured out his song from a bush very near to us. A common bird but such an uplifting encounter with nature.

and £250,000 and 5% from any transaction exceeding £250,000 and up to £500,000. The surcharge applies to anyone buying a buy-to-let property or an additional property with a value exceeding £40,000. The extra stamp duty can add thousands of pounds to a purchase which has put off some investors. For example, a property sold for £250,000, before 1 April would accrue £2,500 of stamp duty and from now on, that figure will increase to £10,000. If however you buy a second home and within 3 years sell your current home you may be entitled to a refund to the extra stamp duty you paid. The cost of the government’s new measures will fall heavily on buy-to-let investors, who choose this investment option to increase their pension pot or supplement their income. The new Stamp Duty surcharge stands to provide significant revenues for the treasury, capitalizing on the increased number of private landlords investing in a second property or expanding their property portfolio.

Landlords are facing a further squeeze under restrictions to mortgage tax relief, due to come into force next year, while 08/04/2016the 12:40 Bank of England has also announced that they aim to tighten restrictions around buy-to-let-lending. These changes will make lenders look into a landlord’s wider finances and not just consider the landlord’s rental income.

he new financial year has started with a shake up to stamp duty for buy-to-let investors and people buying more then one property.

In November 2015, George Osborne, the chancellor, first announced that changes to the current stamp duty paid on second homes or buy-to-let properties would incur a 3% surcharge. This sent shock waves to buy-to-let investors, who rushed to buy properties before the implementation, on 1st April 2016. For landlords, estate agents and solicitors, the days and weeks leading up to the deadline have been some of the busiest in living memory, as parties rushed to complete property deals before the increase came into force. Currently, first time buyers pay no stamp duty on the first £125,000 of any transaction, then 2% on transactions between £125,000

According to the Association of Residential Letting Agents, nearly 40% of the letting agents predict that the supply of buy-to-let properties will fall from 1 April 2016, while many of the organisations’ members believing the cost will be passed onto tenants with an increase in rents. Whether you have a portfolio of buy-to-let properties, holiday homes or simply want to buy and sell a property please contact: Shazad Butt on 01284 755771 or email: shazad.butt@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk

Breckland Cats Protection We at Breckland Cats Protection would never deny an elderly person from adopting one of our cats. Especially if the elderly person lives alone and needs a cat for companionship. We appreciate that they may not want a kitten, as they may climb up legs and then the curtains. They race around a lot and can easily trip someone up, or even worse, get trodden on. An older cat is always better for an older person. Most of them just want a comfortable bed, food and a lap to cuddle up on.

saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They have a national network of over 15,000 community service volunteers who provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem, for example walking the dog for a housebound owner. The Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. To register, or if you have any questions, contact them on 01736 757900 or write to them at The Cinnamon Trust, 10 Market Square, Hayle, Cornwall, TR27 4HE.

However, an elderly person needs to have a contingency plan for the cat, if something should happen to them. If you have a friend or family member that will take care of the cat in those circumstances, that is fine. But if not there are several options available. Cats Protection offer a Cat Guardians Service. If you pass away and have registered with our Cat Guardians Service, then we will arrange to bring your cat or cats into the care of one of our nearby branches or adoption centres. Once there, our dedicated volunteers and staff would care for them as we would for any cat that needs our help. We would then look after your cat or cats while we try to find them a new loving home that matches their personality and needs. Many people who register with our Cat Guardians service also choose to remember Cats Protection in their will, as a result of the time and effort we are willing to exert to secure the welfare of their cats. These gifts are vital to us, as more than half of the work we do to help cats and kittens throughout the UK is funded by this incredible generosity. You can register your cat or cats by calling our team on 01825 741 291 or email us at: catguardians@cats.org.uk Or, if you need any more information or help, they are there to help you. The RSPCA also have a scheme called Home for Life, which gives you the peace of mind that there can still be a bright future ahead for your beloved pet. Obviously they take dogs as well as cats. They are on hand to look after your pet and do all they can to find a new loving home with someone who can give them everything they need. If you have any questions about Home for Life, or would like to register with them, call 0300 1230 239 or email: homeforlife@rspca.org.uk There is another worthy charity called The Cinnamon Trust which specialises in the relief of anxiety faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby

TAX CLINIC by Colin Chamberlain HMRC’s Let Property Campaign As I have mentioned previously in this column, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are currently cracking down on private landlords who have not paid tax on letting income and/or capital gains from selling residential property. HMRC are now taking this issue very seriously. They realise that there is probably a vast sum of unpaid tax relating to let property. They are keen to make examples of people in order to deter others. There has also been an increase in criminal prosecutions in this area of tax recently. Carrot of opportunity for those who come clean As well as cracking down hard on those who they find out about, HMRC are also dangling a carrot of opportunity in front of people who they have not yet found out about. HMRC are giving landlords who have not declared their property letting income and/or capital gains, the chance to come forward of their own accord using the Let Property Campaign (LPC). Whilst those who are caught out are often dealt with quite harshly, those who volunteer their previous misdemeanours via the LPC are usually treated remarkably generously. The scope of the Let Property Campaign The LPC is an opportunity open to all residential property landlords with undisclosed taxes. This includes: • Those who have multiple properties • Landlords with single rentals • Specialist landlords with student or workforce rentals • Holiday lettings • Renting out a room in your main home for more than the ‘rent a room’ scheme threshold • Those who live abroad or intend to live abroad for more than six months and rent out a property in the UK. The campaign is not open to those landlords who are letting out non-residential properties such as a shop, factory, garage or lock up. It also cannot be used by those wishing to disclose income on behalf of a company or trust.

How to take part in the Let Property Campaign To take part in the LPC it is necessary to: • Notify HMRC you want to take part • Disclose all relevant income, gains, tax and duties • Make a formal offer • Pay what you owe • Co-operate with HMRC as much as you can if they ask for more information. Why use the Let Property Campaign? Regardless of whether the undisclosed liabilities are due to misunderstanding the rules or deliberately avoiding paying the right amount, it is better to go to HMRC and admit any inaccuracies rather than wait until HMRC uncovers them. The LPC really does offer the best possible terms to get your tax affairs in order. Interest is payable from the date the tax should have been paid but, when the disclosure is made, the taxpayer can tell HMRC the level of penalty they believe they should pay. What is paid in terms of penalties will depend on why the taxpayer failed to disclose the income. If information has been deliberately withheld from HMRC the penalty will be higher than if there was simply a mistake. Whatever the case, it is almost certain that the penalty will be lower than it would have been if HMRC had found out about the irregularities first. Under the LPC, the penalty rate will be 0%, 10% or 20% of the underpaid tax depending on the circumstances. This is compared to penalties of up to 100% outside the LPC. Note though that higher penalties can still apply in respect of offshore liabilities. When HMRC checks the disclosure they will consider whether the penalty that has been volunteered is reasonable. If HMRC thinks the penalty applied is too low they may carry out further checks. If the taxpayer is unable to afford to pay all the outstanding liabilities in one instalment, it is possible, if the circumstances warrant it, to spread the payments. Arguably most importantly, the LPC gives non compliant landlords an opportunity to stop worrying, wipe the slate clean, move on and get things right in the future. Professional help When making a disclosure under the LPC, it is important to get the calculations right, and it is often safer to enlist professional assistance. I would be happy to help and offer advice on this or any other tax issue. I can be contacted on 01842 755032 or via email on: c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk Disclaimer: Please note that this article is provided for your information only. The Engines of Growth

for new items and bargains. Think of a retailer selling collectables; the store owner will tailor his stock to the most collectable products and thus the customers will keep on returning spending money at greater and greater frequencies

‘Business Matters’ column, by Ryan Windsor

Viral – One of the main proponents of viral growth is word of mouth and social networks. The idea is that the customers become evangelists and share and spread your company’s products and services. The power comes from something called the Viral Loop an example of this is Hotmail the email company when it first launched very few people were using it but as soon as they put “P.S Get your free e-mail at Hotmail” with a clickable link the sign up rate increased dramatically and 18 months after starting they sold to Microsoft for $400m

“Your business is either growing or dying, there is no such thing as ticking along”. (Dee Kumar) Throughout the ages there have been many great businesses, world leaders and game changers. Businesses that you’d expect to be around for the long haul, businesses that you thought would change the world over and over again, innovating & creating value. But sometimes these legendary businesses slow, stagnate and die. Why?

Paid - This is the route the majority of businesses take, note I’ve left this till last as you don’t always have to pay for your growth.

Let’s look at Kodak - this business had dominated the photography industry since 1888. Up until recently you would have been a fool to think anyone could take on this business or even enter this industry and grow as they pretty much had a monopoly but they grew complacent and uttered the cursed words of “Our aim is to maintain market share”.

There are many ways in which you can sign up customers, this can be either on or offline. The main thing to know is the acquisition cost per customer and the only way to grow using this engine is to either increase your sales revenue or cut down on your customer acquisition costs and to know the Life Time value of the customers. For example if an advert costs you £200 but you get 100 new customers your acquisition cost per customer is £2.00 if the Life time value of the customer is greater than £2.00 your company will grow.

What happened was that they thought they were untouchable and the printed film industry would be around forever - they were wrong. A little innovative technological advance (digital cameras) disrupted this industry and nearly saw the collapse of Kodak. So how can you make sure this doesn’t happen to you? First, you can understand the types of growth and implement strategies to aid in it.

Whether you’re a giant industry titan or small family business the truth is if you’re not growing you’re dying.

The three main types of growth Would you like to ask Ryan a question? Email: ryanwindsor89@gmail.com

Sticky – This type of growth is seen in companies that have customers coming back, visiting the store

Meet Up’s plea for help with fundraising drive receives first show of business support Meet Up, the community hub on the Redcastle Furze Estate, run by The Benjamin Foundation, has received its first pledge of business support for its new fundraising drive. The charitable service needs to raise £30,000 to fix the roof plus a further £20,000 for additional maintenance and repair works. Over 100 young people regularly attend Meet Up’s twice weekly youth clubs, babies as young as six months and their parents attend a weekly parent and toddler group, and older members of the community regularly attend Meet Up’s senior citizens lunch club where they are provided with hot meal.

Picture: Mayor of Thetford Robert Kybird at the Meet Up Cafe recently

Immediate priorities include addressing the roof issues, sorting out some of the lighting problems and upgrading both the male and female toilets. The old boiler also needs to be decommissioned and replaced. Other priorities include repainting outside woodwork and metal work including window frames and railings. There are hopes to make the building more energy efficient.

Kate Lambert from The Anglia Group, commented: “We heard about Meet Up’s fundraising drive via social media and immediately wanted to help. Our donation of radiators, sinks and handrails will go some way to helping to refurbish the inside of the building, which needs maintaining as well as the outside. West Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project Report

Local Licenced & Insured Electrician for all Emergencies, Technical Support & all other Electrical Services

I was very saddened this week as I took a walk around Barnham Cross Common area, on both sides of the Bury Road. Councillor Chris Harvey joined me as I responded to many postings on social media about fly tipping. What makes people feel that it’s ok to dump their rubbish in the middle of something so beautiful, free to enjoy and is on our doorstep? As a general rule of thumb, the wooded area at the Fir Road end of the common is the responsibility of Breckland Council so please report any fly-tipping found at: www.breckland.gov.uk/flytip

As you may have heard, there have been some changes in the cost of taking DIY rubbish to the Recycling Centre. I am awaiting the arrival of the new leaflets detailing the changes but in the meantime, you can find all of the information at:

I recently lost my job and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m now back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first? First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electric, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and personal loans. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. You’re now ready to start negotiations with your creditor. Put together a letter - otherwise known as a “financial statement” - explaining why your ability to repay

New Hand Car Wash Opens in Thetford A brand new family business has opened in the centre of Thetford thanks to local businessman Shab Mirzah. Shab has been running businesses in the town for the past 6 years and has grown to love Thetford. Thetford Hand Car Wash & Valeting Centre is in Grove Lane, in the barns previously known as Danny’s Den. Speaking about his new venture Shab said “ Most of the time we will clean your car whilst you wait, although we do take bookings, especially for a full valet service. I saw there was no car wash in the centre of town, somewhere where you can leave your car whilst you shop or you can wait here and enjoy a free coffee, so I decided to open this business.” Thetford Hand Car Wash & Valeting Centre opened at the end of March and is managed by Shab’s nephew Roma. “We offer a friendly professional service that will leave your car clean and shiny, if you come to us we’ll give you a warm welcome, once you’ve had 5 washes the 6th is free with our loyalty card.” Prices start from £6.00

Celebrating 70 years of the Women’s Institute in Thetford Set the scene…… 1946 in Thetford which then had a population of around 5,000. A group of prominent ladies in the town decided it was time to form a branch of the Women’s Institute, and within 2 years they had a membership of 200 and were the largest branch in Norfolk. Old photos indicate that all the ladies wore hats and no-one wore trousers. The meetings were presided over by the President presenting the business of the day followed by a speaker. Coffee time followed with cups of coffee and conversation circulating, followed by a social half-hour. As always fun and friendship being the mainstay of the W.I In the early post-war years many of the talks were about mending and making do. How to recover an eiderdown was one such talk, with various talks on diet and nutrition. At a meeting in 1948, the Mayor appealed for donations of blood and help in providing entertainment for homeless Polish boys during the Easter holidays. Appeals were also made for clothing for distressed persons in Europe as well as hand-knitted mittens for local RAF personnel. The Drama Group were also successful being awarded a cup at a County Festival.

A meeting of Thetford Women’s Institute from 1948, venue believed to be Thetford Guildhall

During the 1980’s the Choir was reformed and were very successful in winning awards as well as being invited to sing at Euston Hall and West Suffolk Hospital. Thetford W.I joined in the many Town Carnivals held during this period by successfully entering floats and winning on several occasions as well as taking 2nd and 3rd prizes. Teas were provided for the Blood Donor session when they were in town, and the Institute supported an Old Friend’s Club in Magdalen Street, running bingo sessions and making teas. When the RAFA band came to town to give concerts, members provided the musicians with a cooked meal prior to their concerts. This was very much appreciated by the musicians and was also a money-making exercise.

Too busy?

By the 1970’s the population had risen with overspill residents, some of these ladies joined the Committee. There were fashion shows, make-up demonstrations and successful handicraft exhibitions and sales. A prize-winning quilt made by 10 members went on permanent display at the W.I Denman College in Oxfordshire. Much fund-raising took place including raising £500 for a Guide Dog for the Blind, and a further £200 to purchase a special bed in memory of a greatly valued member who had recently died. Waste-paper collecting raised monies, making donations to the Welfare Mini Bus, St Nicholas Hospice and others.

The numbers dropped during the 1990’s but there were still lots of activities and members continued to enter County Craft events as well as entering teams for darts, bowls and scrabble. Funds were also raised for the purchase of a garden bench which was donated to the town and placed in King’s House Garden. The Museum asked the W.I to make up a History Box to be borrowed by the schools for the children to interact with. This was crafted from plastic canvas and tapestry with the contents including old books on Thetford, a piece of flint, mementoes from Thetford businesses and is kept

at the Museum. In 1999 a wall hanging was undertaken for a County Craft competition with the theme of showcasing all aspects of life in the town. This depicted the industries, leisure, schools, clubs and societies with a wonderfully created piece of gold work as the centrepiece depicting the Borough’s badge. Coincidentally this was ready to be shown when HRH Prince Charles visited the town and a group of ladies who worked on it were presented to His Royal Highness. The wall-hanging was carefully framed and presented to the Library where it remains to this day. In the 2000’s membership was beginning to grow again and the decision was made to move the meeting place from the Guildhall to the United Reformed Church which was more amenable to larger numbers with better kitchen facilities.

Of course Thetford W.I are part of a national organisation and as such members have the opportunity of voting on national issues when the occasion arises. Each year Resolutions are discussed at the National Annual Meeting and these are then put to Government, or working parties set up to pursue these suggestions further. Through the ages, subjects such as free family planning, human trafficking, more care for the mentally ill and call for more midwives have been debated. All in all it’s been a splendid 70 years giving the ladies of Thetford some very happy times and long may it last. If you wish to know more about Thetford W.I as it is today, please call Rose Peterson on 01842 754273.

Women’s Institute members ‘bake-off’ as part of Thetford’s Great Festival

In 2016 the town is now a very different place with a much larger population of about 25,000 which includes a significant percentage of migrant workers. Thetford W.I continues to grow with a current membership of 50 ladies of all ages. Our ladies have different ambitions and interests, but fun and friendship is still at the core of our programme. There is a regular Lunch Club travelling to various venues in the district, and a Book Club of members who meet up regularly in one another’s homes to choose and discuss books that have been read. We continue to have Darts and Bowls teams who enter County competitions, and entries are also made into County Craft competitions. There are usually one or two teams ready to enter local quizzes as well. Speakers are from all walks of life and always bring us an interesting evening.

Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG) This month we thought it would be useful to provide a general update with the various activities that STAG has been involved with over the last few months. The April public STAG meeting heard updated from the police about how they and other partner organisations have continued to work to address anti-social behaviour around the town centre. This included the police having two ‘high impact days’ which involved additional police officers being drafted into Thetford. On one of the days a reporter from the EDP also joined the police to find out exactly what an ‘impact day’ means. Impact days take place as part of the response to public concerns coming from calls to 101 or from STAG priorities. Calling 101 or attending the STAG public meeting does make a difference. The police have also seized alcohol on 21 occasions in and around the town centre. The Heavy Goods Vehicles travelling ‘the wrong way’ on Bury Road has also been a STAG priority with the police giving the area more attention. The Police Casualty Reduction Team (CRT) has been working in the area on motorbikes and has issued 11 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for speeding, 4 for using mobile phones, and 5 for not wearing a seatbelt. A further 3 vehicles have been issued Vehicle Defect Rectification forms. Bury Road seems to be a place to avoid for other drivers as well as HGV vehicles if you are not driving in accordance with the law. Fly Tipping is still a STAG priority and we are very pleased that Thetford and Breckland Councillors are taking such an active interest. A group of Councillors, along with officers from Breckland Council and Flagship Housing, visited a number of areas where fly tipping is still causing a serious problem. As well as reviewing the fly tipping reporting process, more work is planned around fly tipping enforcement which could lead to residents losing their tenancy if they are in rented accommodation.

Award Winning Author I still feel like I‘m dreaming, I have literally just returned from a 3-night stay in Toronto, Canada, as I was invited to an International Book Launch, for my first book Pilates for Better Sex. I have had my book idea for a couple of years. The idea was formed through working with many women who face real issues of intimacy due to back, hip or pelvic floor dysfunction. I knew I wanted to educate, empower and support but I had no idea on how to structure, market or present this taboo subject. Last October I signed a publishing deal and was mentored through the structuring of my book. The blueprint came to life. I felt elevate. I could see the final product, my motivation was heightened, I was so excited. I kept working through the sub headings. My book is very visual - ensuring the photos looked technically correct was another issue I faced. To see the finished product is truly heart warming, I feel proud. The launch at The Core Studio early April was perfect, to be able to share with those that have touched my heart, shown me much love and support; this also gave me confidence to fly to Toronto and share my story. What an amazing weekend; fast & furious. I have been offered the opportunity to co-author with two other women and deliver Pilates at Couples Retreats in Bora Bora, Thailand and the US. If you are interested in hearing more on my story or finding out about future workshops, presentations and tour dates please contact me on 07725 582817.

Taking place from 9th May to 19th June England Hockey’s 2016 national campaign promises to be bigger and better than ever as we aim to attract thousands of players back to hockey. Back to Hockey sessions are coached sessions for men and women who may not have played hockey for a long period of time or who are looking to try the sport for the first time. The coached sessions will provide a great opportunity to learn/refresh skills and play with like- minded people in a friendly and relaxed environment without the pressure to perform. Last year over 243 clubs delivered sessions and 4,440 players took part. Based on feedback from players, towards the end of this campaign, we are also encouraging local clubs to come together and play small sided games against each other. See England Hockey website: www.englandhockey.co.uk/backtohockey To sign up or find a local hockey club at: www.suffolksport.com
