Thetford Shines Brighter The Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Lady Pippa Dannatt, High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Claire Agnew and Lady Kay Fisher joined business leaders, local charities, community groups, local council officers and service providers for the launch of Thetford Shines Brighter at Thetford Garden Centre during October. A new project from Norfolk Community Foundation (NCF) and the EDP, the £50,000 fund is looking to grow and help groups on their doorstep. Thetford Businessman Jo Pearson explained, “This is of course something close to my heart. As a born and bred Thetfordian, resident and businessman, and as the Vice Chairman of the Norfolk Foundation, I am pleased and proud to be taking a lead role in raising funds and awareness to support the small charities and community groups which make such a difference to the lives of local people in Thetford.

Many of the people that I speak to in Thetford want to help the vital and ugently needed work of the small charities and community groups that make a difference to the beating heart of the town. They want to support Thetford charities in particular. This is the importance of local charities, harnessing the passion that people have for making a difference locally. At Norfolk Community Foundation we recognise this and have worked to bring a scheme that would empower people to get involved, to find out what groups are doing and achieving in Thetford, to then join in with volunteering. And of course to also recognise that these groups need funding. Working together we can make Thetford an even better place to work and live.”

the

Guests at the Thetford Shines Brighter launch

Claire Cullens NCF CEO said, “When I talked with Jo about this at the beginning of the year, we never imagined that we’d capture the energy and enthusiasm that we have in the room today. As a partnership organisation we give funding to over 2000 charities in Norfolk. We know that small and local charities and voluntary organisations are the glue that holds communities together and Thetford is unique in that is has a higher than average number of people who donate their time, but we know that local services are under pressure and struggling to meet local needs.” After initial research 8 areas of action have been have identified, with guests asked to work in small groups to identify 3 key priorities. From consultations with the public and community groups the people most liked the variety and strength of community groups, the variety of activities in the town, the open spaces and the people. However, reducing anti-social behaviour was also flagged up as the top priority for the town by residents and community groups. The collective desire from the launch attendees was support for young people; to raise their aspirations, supporting skills and education and engage them with their community. Improved mental health and wellbeing services and the sustainability of good projects for future years were also identified as key priorities. Buy Local For Christmas Thetford has a number of independent retailers dotted across the town centre ranging from gifts to high performance camera equipment at Thetford’s oldest independent shop Studio Five. Despite the growing trend for larger out of town developments the common denominator for independent businesses is the level of customer service and relationships they develop with their customers. From larger stores such as Roy’s of Thetford who sell a variety of goods changing seasonally to small individual shops, Thetford has a vibrant mix of retailers. For Sarah who works at Waterman’s jewellers it’s the personal interaction with customers that gives her the most job satisfaction, “We have regular customers who are a mix of ages and from all sections of our local community. Our customers keep returning because of how we look after them, some will pop in to say hello when they’re in town and we’re always pleased to have a chat.” Chicc Boutique opened 3 years ago in King Street and has continued to thrive. “I love it, Thetford has always been brilliant for me,” said business owner Nicola Yorke “We used to do craft fairs, but it’s been lovely to create a shop. People come in and say hello, and it’s lovely to hear what they think of the stock. We hand pick everything in the shop and it’s always changing, so there’s always something new to discover.” New in Chicc Boutique for this Christmas are decorative birch wood cone trees with lights, Christmas hearts and Jigsaw pieces with more stock arriving in the coming weeks. Next door in Leaping Hare products can be found by local artisans. Manager Jake Shannon said, “Independent retailers keep the town thriving and help local employment, you can try new goods that you haven’t seen before in shops such as the Portuguese and Eastern European delis.” Leaping Hare is the perfect place to find out what’s happening in town and surrounding area. Alongside local artisan products including toiletries and jewellery is Leaping Hare’s own Thetford branded gifts and cards, popular with locals and tourists alike. Further along King Street is Case Place, who have been trading for 6 years. Owner David Wortley said that a new phone case can be an ideal stocking filler or Secret Santa gift, “I do struggle against the likes of eBay, but what you get by coming in here is the opportunity to open the case and try before you buy. It’s all about face to face customer service for us. I also made sure I’ve

kept up with the latest training. Having the latest iPhone screen and battery training was expensive but has made a huge difference to the business.” Case Place has built up a loyal customer base “We have a lot of elderly people in, they like the older style of phones and don’t want to be signed up for a contract so I get in replacement phone chargers etc for them. We are also geared up for the latest phones and had cases ready for the launches.” Over in the Shambles, Precious Bear has just celebrated their second year of trading and specialise in Spanish style baby clothing. Owner Magda Teixeira has also drawn customers from outside the town, “I don’t enjoy shopping online myself so I understand why people like to come into the shop to see the products for themselves,” she explained “I think this is the right place to have opened a baby shop as there was nothing like this out there and people love something a bit different for their babies.” Whatever your needs this Christmas, help our high street and shop locally.

Engine’s Roaring For New Activities The Engine Room is located at the Charles Burrell Centre in what used to be the main school kitchen and dining room space. They are open daily from 10am 2pm providing a Community Cafe service which is open to the general public as well as tenants and hirers on site. They offer a range of hot and cold foods and have also launched a new buffet and catering service. Thanks to some funding from the Co-op Foundation in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Engine Room are very pleased to be able to put on a brand new weekly programme of activities starting in November. They want to make full use of the space available so that they can help residents to meet with one another, tackle loneliness and provide an opportunity for people to learn new skills. The Co-op Foundation recently awarded grants totalling almost £900,000 to help community organisations across England tackle loneliness by improving and protecting local spaces that bring people together. Funding is provided through the £1.6m Space to Connect partnership between the Co-op Foundation and government. A total of 57 organisations have been awarded grants of up to £50,000 to help them make better use of spaces so they can address challenges or expand activities. Charles Burrell Centre is delighted to be one of those 57 organisations nationwide to be succesful with funding in this round. Tracy Terry, Manager of the Engine Room said: “We’ve been so pleased to see the growth of the Engine Room over the past few months with many more tenants and visitors to the Centre making use of the space available. We’re pleased that with this funding now confirmed we can now provide a greater range of activities for the whole community with our new weekly programme”.

New Role For Toastmaster Mike Well known Thetford Toastmaster, Mike Wabe, has become the President of the Federation of Professional Toastmasters. Mike spoke of his delight after taking over the reins of the national organisation. The 69-year-old, who joined the Federation in 2015, was elected by his fellow members to become president. Mr Wabe, who performs the master of ceremonies function at weddings, masonic functions and other large gatherings, said, “I love being a Toastmaster and it is huge fun, but it also carries a great deal of responsibility. I am very honoured to have been chosen. It was a complete surprise to have been chosen as Vice-President 2 years ago, and the step up into the President's role is something I never thought I would achieve. I shall do my very best to prove myself worthy of the role." Mike is not only a Toastmaster, he is also the Town Crier of Watton, a civil celebrant, runs a murder mystery business, gives talks to such august bodies as WIs, Rotary Clubs, U3As, historical societies and the like and is a tour guide to boot. The Federation of Professional Toastmasters was formed in 1985 to promote the art of the toastmaster. Mike’s next Thetford Ghost Walk takes place on 15th November, contact 01842 751975.

Residents can catch the show at a number of different venues - details on the website. Tickets are just £5, tea and cake is included! Out and About Thetford

New Trail At High Lodge ‘Future Forest’ a dramatic art installation by reclaimed artists Tom Piper (Tower of London Poppies fame) and Lisa Wright (Royal Shakespeare Company Artist in Residence). The six installations have been placed in locations specifically chosen by the artists during a visit to High Lodge last January. “What we’ve tried to do is to create a three way conversation between Lisa’s figures and my installations, the forest and you the viewer” explained Tom during the official launch. Lisa continued, “It’s been a real collaboration, there’s a wonderful balance with a sense of drama at each installation.” For Tom the forest offered hidden surprises, Marathon Boy based on an ancient Greek sculpture is placed within a small clearing of trees suffering from needle blight. Tom spotted the light flooding into the clearing on a cold winter morning and thought the space was magical. Mirroring the use of spray paint used by the Forestry Commission as markers within the environment, the Future Forest trail uses strong colour as a theme also creating markers directing visitors to each installation. For his installations Tom was inspired by how people use the forest. Artists Tom Piper and Lisa Wright standing with Forest Venus at High Lodge Forest Venus stands within a structure similar to the dens often created by younger visitors to the forest. Tristram Hilborn, Director for Forestry Commission East of England said the project was one of the centre pieces in their centenary celebrations and fitting as Thetford was one of the first plantations created in 1922. Forestry Commission CEO Mark Seven said over the year there had been a series of events for the centenary, 10k runs, tree planting and Future Forest represented the past and the future together. “One of the things we’ve done over the years is working with artists and writers to interpret the forest. Trees I planted 30 years ago, I won’t see come to fruition, but I’ve planted them for future generations, think about the past to the future as you go on the trail.” For more information visit; www.forestryengland/forest100 Support For Over 50s A wealth of activities and support was

on offer for older residents at the Community Wellbeing Fayre for over 50s organised by the Older People’s Project. 26 groups such as the Men’s Shed, Rotary, Vision Norfolk, Silver Social, U3A, TADDs, Breckland Cancer Support Group showcased their offer at the drop in session held in the Carnegie. Sheena Tate for RVS said it was wonderful to see so many people wanting to get involved in getting the message out there for the people of Thetford. “It’s a vibrant town with plenty going on. We’ve been trialling Integrated Oigong at the Meet Up Cafe on Redcastle Estate which has been really successful. We’re looking at adding more dates in the New Year and working to Sheena Tate on the Older People’s Project make it a sustainable activity.” The Older People’s Project has also stand at the Wellbeing Fayre instigated a voucher scheme with LJ’s Taxis to provide discounted vouchers for local travel. Accessible Thetford is another project being undertaken by the group, asking can you access all areas of the town, is there anything that we can do to improve facilities? Currently focussing on the train station, the group has been in talks with Greater Anglia on how access to each platform can be improved. Ramps for mobility scooters around the town have also been suggested. The next wellbeing Fair will be held on Oct 13th 2020. Race Night Success Rotary@CBC are celebrating

after raising £1,161.52 at this year’s Race Night event. Thetford Foodbank and Winter Warmer Lunch Project will benefit from the proceeds. Each race is interactive with jockeys on hobby horses moving on a roll of a dice. “We are very grateful to all our sponsors and everyone who supported the event, “ said Chair Karen-Emma White. “Race Night is always a fun night out for those taking part and is a great way to raise much needed funds for local charities.” For more info visit; www.facebook.com/RotaryatCBC/ Maharajah Remembered The inaugural event for the Anglo Punjab Heritage Foundation saw guests gathered at Elveden to mark the 126th anniversary of the death of Maharajah Duleep Singh. Local dignitaries were joined by visitors from as far away as Gravesend, Derby, Birmingham, Norfolk & Norwich Sikh Society, East London Sikh Welfare Society and Central London Gurdwara to lay wreaths at the graves of the Maharajah, his wife Maharani Bamba and youngest son Prince Albert. The event was opened by Town Crier Mike Wabe before prayers were said by Rev Paul Tams, Rector of St Andrew’s and St Paul’s Elveden and Giai Balder Singh, Head Priest at Norfolk & Norwich Gurdwara. Wreaths were laid by Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Brenda Canham, Vice Chair of Breckland, Cllr Roy Brame, representatives from the Anglo Punjab Heritage Foundation and Gravesend Gurdwara. Following the service at Elveden guests were invited to the Guildhall for a reception hosted by Thetford Town Council. Speaking at the reception Peter Bance said he was delighted with the success of the event. Oliver Bone from Ancient House Museum spoke of the connection the Maharajah and his family had with the town and Robert Kybird speaking on behalf of the Mayor told the audience of his personal connection to the family through his Great, Great Grandfather who was Head Gamekeeper and his Great, Great Aunt Margaret Mayes who was a ladies maid at Elveden and then Housekeeper at Hampton Court with Princesses Bamba, Catherine and Sophia. A message read on behalf of Brigadier His Highness Maharajah Sukhjit Singh of Kapurthala said that he considered himself privileged to serve as Patron of the Anglo Punjab Heritage Foundation and that the Maharajah’s legacy should be re-evaluated as one of triumph as the event has brought together distinguished members of various communities who value the shared history and heritage existing between Great Britain and Punjab. Speaking about the event, organiser Peter Bance said, “It was a fantastic success, it was lovely to have the Rector say his prayers side by side with the Sikh priest bringing the communities together. The relationship between the Sikh community and Thetford has really developed over the past few years. For me telling the story of the Maharajah and his family is so important.”

Probus AGM – Reports, Shows Respect And Has ‘Last Minute’ Talk If there was a cloud overshadowing Thetford Probus Club’s Annual General Meeting, it certainly wasn’t one about finances – the club reports a healthy bank balance – nor was it membership numbers which have had a welcome boost over the past year. Rather it was the sad loss of one of the town’s most well-known and respected figures, David Osborne. As a local historian he had no peers and the talks he gave to many groups, including Probus, were always hugely informative and interesting. In a mark of respect member stood for a minute’s silence. After conducting official business, reports from and election of officers, Chair Nigel King planned to explain the use and benefits of Cloud for storing data, having established the club’s own Cloud storage. But the fickle nature of computers is such that his laptop could not achieved a satisfactory connection, so the presentation was postponed for another meeting. Fortunately, there was no hiccup when member Chas Fox, a retired RAF Squadron Leader ably filled the breach with a talk about one of his most memorable experiences during his 38 years’ service. It involved an armaments training mission to Canada. What made the trip so eventful was it coincided with the Argentinian invasion of the Falklands. “The trip was thrown into some confusion as we were unprepared for an extended stay in Canada and had to meet unexpected expenses for transportation and accommodation. My Barclaycard was called into service and it proved its worth. In an emergency it was a matter of improvising as best we could,” he said. Members enjoyed his ‘last minute’ talk and showed their appreciation in the usual way by giving him a round of applause.

Panto Returns With A Cracker Oh Yes They Are!

P B S

With Panto season fast approaching the Thetford Players are flat out rehearsing this year’s panto – Beauty and the Beast. Don’t expect Disney style singing furniture, this is a Panto version of the traditional story which can mean only one thing, there has to be a Dame! And what a Dame they have this year. Adam Bond joins the Players having performed previously with Cambridge Theatre Group and the Pied Pipers in Cambridge. “I moved to Thetford 3 years ago and was looking for local Am Dram groups to join, and of course the Thetford Players were the perfect choice.” Adam explained. The show also sees the arrival of a new Director, Andy Smith. Although it’s Andy’s first time directing for the Players he has been involved in productions by the Attleborough Players and Norfolk Am Dram Society. Andy’s son’s Thomas and Harry have both been in Players productions for some years, “Although I’ve helped out a bit in the past, I decided to get more involved this year and do something more proactive.”

It’s a family affair this year with Andy’s wife Carol creating costumes and Thomas joining the adult chorus. There’s a host of Panto favourites returning including Phil Pearson as Beauty’s father Maurice, George Cooke as Jack, Luke Jefferies as the Beast and Charlotte Bevington debuting in a principal role as Beauty. Chorus favourites Jo Van de Hulks and Elizabeth Wright are joined by youngsters from the Junior Chorus. Maddie and Frankie Soan have taken on multiple roles this year both on stage and behind the scenes, performing as Tribble and Teal whilst creating all the choreography. Look out for the return of slap stick and more than one nostalgic musical homage. It’s going to be another fantastic show no matter how young or old you are. Centre Stage Named ‘Go-To Studio’ Kim Ritchie the owner of Centre Stage Studio, based at the Charles Burrell Centre was delighted to be asked to feature in a book celebrating successful dance studios from around the world. This comes at a very exciting time for her as the studio has also just celebrated their 8th Birthday. ‘Dance Studio Secrets’ was launched in New York in July this year by Australian author and dance studio mentor, Clint Salter and he named Centre Stage as the ‘go-to dance studio’! Kim began teaching dance in Thetford in 2010 as an after school club whilst she was a primary school teacher. Centre Stage opened its doors in September 2011 with three classes on a Saturday morning. As things grew she left her job in 2013 and opened the studio at the CBC a year later. “I really wanted to provide something for Thetford because I grew up in a very similar town with not a lot of opportunities for dance and the performing arts. Today we have over 200 students, five teachers and two studios,” explained Kim, “We now offer such a wide variety of classes that are suitable for all ages and abilities. We are known for our fantastic combo dance classes where we teach ballet, tap and jazz in one convenient class. We believe these offer fantastic value for money and give the little ones a great all round understanding of dance and a good solid dance training. We also teach Disco Duck toddler classes, musical theatre, acrobatic dance, singing and Boogie Bounce fitness classes.”

Too busy?

Although Centre Stage began primarily as a dance school, they now offer musical theatre and singing classes. Kim continued, “We have two amazing musical theatre teachers in our team. This gives our musical theatre students the opportunity to work on bigger projects and performances. We are so excited about the new changes and can’t wait for our students to see

the benefits of our musical theatre curriculum. Centre Stage is taking Musical Theatre to the next level!” The studio is an accredited member of the IDTA and Acrobatic Arts; students are able to take exams and progress in a fun and comfortable environment using the motto #examsarefunhere. Students also get the opportunity to perform in shows, participate in local community events and attend high quality workshops in the school holidays. Kim says that her mission is to work with parents to create kind, honest human beings with skills that will help them through to their adult life. “We have six core values we live and operate by including honesty and integrity, joy, be kind and perseverance and we reward our students based on those qualities.” MCP Editorial:TEMPLATE 12/09/2013 08:13 Page 1 www.centrestageschoolofdance1.com

The ladies from the local community interacted really well with the stall holders, the talks were greatly welcomed and I had lots of positive feedback at the end of the event.” #SeeMe are now planning their second event which they want to be a follow on from their inaugural event on Sunday 26th April 2020.

PEACE COMES TO THETFORD Leaping Hare CIC are co-ordinating the National Lottery Heritage Funded project ‘Peace Comes To Thetford – The Forgotten Soldiers’. The project’s aim is to provide an understanding of Thetford’s unique experience of the aftermath of the First World War, including returning service men, local families and the effect of peace on the town’s industries. The project focuses on the men that survived the war and returned home.

Albert Wyatt

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission dedicated war years are 4th August 1914 until 31st August 1921. Those who died after that date, even as a result of the war, are not classed as war deaths and are not officially commemorated.

‘He led a bombing raid with great courage and determination, clearing two enemy trenches and capturing thirtyfour prisoners. Later he reorganised the defence of the position and maintained it against repeated attacks.’

The project is enabling local people in Thetford to come together to preserve the memories and heritage of The Forgotten Soldiers. We are currently busy researching and where possible recording people’s memories and experiences. We are also looking for local connections to family members or relatives or contemporaries who will still be alive today. This is difficult as many never spoke of their experiences and unless you are researching your family history, you may not be aware that a family member could just be one of the forgotten soldiers we are looking for.

Albert Wyatt, born in Kenninghall, was one of seven brothers who served in the army during the Great War. He joined the West Yorkshire Regiment to be with his brother, Herbert, in 1907. Albert had a distinguished military career and was something of a local hero after he was awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry in action while serving as a Sergeant on the Western Front with the Bedfordshire Regiment in 1916.

Sergeant Albert Wyatt also served with the Norfolk Regiment, Northamptonshire Regiment and Defence Corps before being

discharged unfit for service in 1917, having been seriously wounded in action and not for the first time. He died on 23 October 1928 aged 41 and is buried in Thetford Cemetery. Six of Albert’s brothers also served in the army during the war. The modern Wyatt Way, off the Mundford Road was named and dedicated to the Wyatt brothers.

The project will conclude with the production of information boards at Thetford Cemetery.

David Osborne It is noted with great sadness that David Osborne, dear friend, wonderful local historian and founder member of our group, passed away recently. David was quite simply a legend, his knowledge and experience both invaluable and inspirational. He will be sorely missed by many people and for many reasons. This project will proceed to its conclusion in September 2020 and is dedicated to the memory of David.

Photo: courtesy of Ancient House Museum. William and Emma Wyatt and Children

It was while serving on the Western Front in December 1914, that Corporal Wyatt, 1st Norfolk Regiment, wrote a letter home to his mother at Thetford, describing a football match they played on Christmas Day in no man’s land against German soldiers from the opposite trenches.

“I regard this as the most historic day ever spent on the battlefield. I arrived in the trenches 24th December and found everything quiet. There was no rifle firing, when we heard someone singing Christmas hymns. Then all at once there were shouts of, “Three cheers for the English”. To our surprise the voice came from the German trenches. Then both our men and the Germans started singing hymns together. The same thing carried on nearly all night and there was a sharp frost to make things look better. On Christmas morning it was very thick and we could not see far in front of us until about mid-day. Then we heard the Germans shouting, “Come over here we will not fire!”. They got out of there trenches and started walking about on the top. Our chaps seeing them did the same. Then all at once came the

surprise. The Germans started walking towards our trenches and two or three of our chaps went out to meet them. When they met, the Germans, speaking in English, wished them a “Merry Christmas”. Then came the fun. Everybody on each side walked out to the middle of the two firing lines and shaking hands wished each other a “Merry Christmas”. To our surprise we found we were fighting men old enough to be our fathers and they told us they had had enough of the war, as they were nearly all married men. We finished up in the same old way, kicking a football about between the two firing lines. So football in the firing lines between the British and the Germans is the truth, as I was one who played.” Taken from: ‘A Small Fragment of the Great War The Ancient Borough of Thetford 1914 - 1919 and a Few Years Beyond’ by David Osborne.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Discover Learn More Get Involved There is plenty to still get involved with, especially the research of old newspapers. This work is far from glamorous and is often repetitive but crucial for us to find the snippets of information we need. There’s also the local stories from either family or friends – if you have been meaning to get in touch, now’s the time!

Ladies’ Nifty Knits For Charity Rus and Sue Webber have spent the year raising money for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) aiming to match their annual £3,000 donation. By Easter they were well on the way to their first £1000 thanks to the nimble fingers of the ladies at Thetford Methodist Church who created 1000 knitted chicks complete with a hidden crème egg surprise. Following the success of the chicks the ladies have been busy again transforming chocolate oranges into Christmas puddings, Christmas Trees, Father Christmas’ and Snowmen alongside Christmas crackers and hedgehogs. The crackers have a little bag of sweets included or you can pop your own treat inside. Rotary@CBC have donated 100 chocolate oranges to support the fundraising. Chair Karen-Emma White said, “We thought it would be a good to see a small amount of money we have previously raised work hard again for another good cause.” Knitter Wendy Greenwood said they were gob-smacked at the lovely gesture from Rotary@CBC, “People are buying the knitted covers with a chocolate orange, or just as a cover to pop something like a bath bomb in. We do have some plastic eggs and bags of haribo for people who need a dairy free option.” The ladies are selling their creations for £3 with a chocolate orange or £2 without a filling. Crackers

A selection of knitted chocolate orange covers and Christmas goodies from the Methodist Church ladies

are £2 and Hedgehogs are £3 each. To place an order please contact Sue on 01842 761826 or pop along to the Methodist Church for the next fundraising event.

This month’s Thetford Face is Jo Lylie Cooper. Jo has been involved in a number of community groups and is also classed as an ‘expert patient’ supporting people at the Pain Clinic in Norwich. How long have you lived in Thetford? I was born here in Melford Bridge Road, but as my Dad was in the forces we moved away when I was young. I moved back permanently about 25 years ago. What drew you back to Thetford? Even though we were often abroad, my grandparents were here, and I had very happy memories of Melford Bridge Road and Nether Row where they lived. Thetford had always made me smile when we came back to visit, I knew it would always draw me back. I had a 4 year old and twin babies, so I wanted to be close to my family. Did you get involved with community groups when you returned to the town? Initially I joined the Thetford Music and Drama Society. I helped backstage with the props and loved it. I did a few shows but then my work life took over and I had to take a step back. How did you become involved with the Thetford Players? I was asked by someone if I’d help. They were looking to put on a Panto, and it sounded fun. It was shortly after my Dad and Gran had died and I needed something to keep me occupied and that’s what I got.

Jo, front row far right with members of Thetford Players at one of their early Historical Character walks

Jo at home charging her spinal cord stimulator

How involved are you in the Players these days? I’ve been involved in every show over the past 10 years in one way or another. I started with props then moved across to directing. I took over as Chair in 2013 but took a year off in 2018 and became Vice Chair. These days I tend to work as a Producer, including the upcoming Panto in January. How long have you been involved with TADDS? Around 2014 I was singing with Discord and we were raising money for Dementia groups, and I went along to give them a cheque. I got chatting with Jo Mountjoy-Dixon and Yvonne Warren and decided to volunteer and eventually became a Trustee. Now I facilitate an extra activity session on the 4th Thursday of each month at the Methodist Hall. It’s a small group session for people who are looking for something a bit quieter, a stepping stone to the big group or an extra session. We’ve had cookery demos, crafting, reminiscence, quizzes and singing sessions.

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 32

Why were you interested in raising money and supporting people with Dementia? My Grandad and Uncle both had Alzheimer’s and having got involved I absolutely love the people at group. Does Thetford support people with dementia well? I think you see it more and more in the town these days. People are a lot more aware of the issues around dementia. Sainsbury’s are now offering a dandelion lanyard for people to wear which flags up hidden disabilities. TADDS provides an essential service, the doctors surgeries are involved, and you can enjoy a monthly dementia friendly screening at the cinema. How important is singing in your life? It is so important, it lifts me! It doesn’t matter how I’m feeling, when I go singing on a Tuesday I come back smiling. I got involved with Honington Military Wives Choir once Discord finished in Thetford. I didn’t know that you don’t have to be a wife. Each choir has a quota of wives, otherwise you just need to have a military connection that has affected your life, and mine was through my Dad. My first gig with them was at Ely Cathedral and I’ve never done anything so emotional. The group is so special to me because I always sing for my Dad.

Jo at her Night Market stall, she continues to sew and be creative

You helped to set up the original Night Markets, where did the idea come from? The Night Markets came out of the SORT IT project. I wanted to be part of bringing something new to Thetford including live music with my partner at the time, Mark Hennessy. We got the first four markets going before Mark suddenly died. I missed the next few but did the last one of the season for him. We had a market stall selling bags, incense, wooden jewellery and bits and pieces. Do you still get involved with Town initiatives? I would love to do more, there’s all sorts of activities going on. I think people should get involved, I’m all about giving something back. It gives me a real satisfaction,

I don’t do it for the praise, but rather doing something for other people, something that gives people joy. Being part of Thetford Players does that, and it gives me a buzz from being part of it. I also volunteered at the Night Shelter last year, serving breakfast on Christmas Day and helping generally. It’s had quite an impact on me, you don’t realise or see what’s under your nose. I always knew there were people living rough in town, but I wasn’t aware of how many or where they were living. Not everyone had alcohol or drug issues, some were working but on such low wages they can’t afford to pay to live somewhere. As a community people really pulled together, it was amazing to see the donations and offers of help flooding in. You are currently helping patients in acute pain; how did that happen? I was diagnosed with a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (SCS) in 2017. In 2015 I started losing sensation in my arm, dropping things and woke up with my hand clawed in. It affects my whole arm, from the tips of my fingers right up to my neck. It’s a malfunction of my nervous system and my arm was sending pain signals to my brain 24 hours a day. Eventually I was referred to a pain clinic in Norwich and put on a pathway for a spinal cord stimulator implant which I had in May 2018. It’s a long process which includes talking to current users and not everyone on the pathway gets one. I’m fitted with two wires from my lower back up the epidural space to my neck and connected to a battery implanted into my buttock, which I charge every other day. Now I take part in the seminars for other people and share my experiences, and the recovery process. What do you like best about living in the town? Although it’s changed so much I still think we have a beautiful town. I especially like the history, which I learnt soCMS muchAdvert.qxp_Layout about since Thetford1Players did their09:19 historical 11/10/2019 Page 1 walks. You just need to go out and have a walk!

Breckland Cats Protection October 27th was National Black Cat Day celebrating the beauty of these sleek creatures. Old notions have given them a bad name and the Black Cat Day is to help turn their reputation around. It was once thought that fairies take the form of black cats and their arrival in a village was seen as a sign of good luck. But they are now seen as unlucky or mischievous, which makes them all the harder to home. Black kittens are always the last to be chosen from a litter of kittens, where there are tabbies, torties and ginger kittens. Our rehoming centres have many black and black and white cats and kittens looking for new homes. Currently in our care we have several black adult cats just looking for a chance to be a friendly companion or pet for a family. One is a black female called Chrissie, who had kittens in our care, she is now neutered, microchipped and has had flea and worm treatment. Her adoption fee is £60 which helps towards her vet fees. We also have several black kittens, both male and female, vaccinated, microchipped and we will pay for them to be neutered when they are 4 months old. Call the number below if you are interested.

When asked why he hadn't had Fleur neutered, he said he didn't have time – in 7 years! It is unbelievable that such a thing has been allowed to happen, Fleur will be neutered when her baby has been weaned and the Trust is hoping to home her together with her little kitten Flynn. For information or advice, or if you need help with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018.

We recently heard another sad story about a cat called Fleur. She has been taken in by the Celia Hammond OPEN EVERY Animal Trust after having kittens. Fleur has a congenital AFTERNOON AND EVENING abnormality in that she has only one nipple instead of the normal eight. She is 7 years old and has had litter after litter of kittens, but only one kitten from each litter has survived. The other kittens must have been searching for a nipple, but sadly would have died within about 48 hours of birth having starved to death. Kittens take to one nipple and stay there until they are weaned so the other kittens wouldn't have been able to share. Maid2Clean 1/8 AD.qxp_Layout 18/04/2019 Fleur’s owner said he couldn't cope 1with her anymore11:24 Pa and it was not fair to his children to see kittens die.

Thetford Garden And Allotment Club Many trees are quite bare of leaves now but that means it is a good time to plant deciduous trees and shrubs – in fact it is National Tree Week from 27th November to 5th December. Provided their roots do not dry out trees will establish and make strong growth; many of you must have been impressed at the avenue of plane trees planted by the Thetford Society near the entrance to the BTO. Thetford has more trees than most towns, but they don’t go on for ever and appropriate planting is our gift to the next generation (or four). This is also a good month to prune trees to ensure they maintain their shape. Fruit trees can additionally benefit from grease bands round the trunk to stop winter moth damage. While you have secateurs in your hand, take back bush roses by about a third to help them avoid wind-rock. A rough cut now will help the plant and keep the border tidy. On the vegetable plot, after the ground has been cleared, one problem can be the winter rains washing away nutrients. If you have material that can be laid as a mulch, it will give some protection and can be forked in when you are preparing the area for sowing next year. Ideally this would be manure but half-rotted compost will also do the job. Another suggestion is to grow a green manure, again with a view to forking in. Grazing rye or winter vetch are recommended for overwintering. Hellebores or Christmas roses will be putting on a show soon and it is worth clearing away old leaves so that the flowers can be seen. Looking ahead you could treat yourself to some tulip bulbs to bring on in pots for spectacular colour next year – but remember to keep them protected from muntjac which seem to love the taste. Fortunately, they don’t like daffodils. Check your pots after heavy rain. Some may be better raised up on pot-shards or similar to allow drainage.

Look out for the Plane trees planted for future generations of Thetfordians by Nuns Bridges

Now is also the time to start feeding the birds regularly. They have feasted from the hedgerows through the autumn but need our help from now on.

The club meeting this month should be a great treat with past Chairman Rachel Woods talking to us about Exotic Gardens of Australia and Singapore. This will be on Thursday 28th November at 7.30pm (doors open 7.15pm) in the United Reformed Church hall. Charge for members remains £2 and visitors are most welcome atPowerclean £3, refreshments included. QP Portrait Advert 04.19.qxp_Layout 1 13/03 Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Starling Spectacular On late autumn and winter evenings, Thetford’s skies become the backdrop for an astounding aerial display. Thousands of Starlings gather above the town, twisting and wheeling above their favoured roosting spot before dropping in to spend the night in relative safety. Why do they flock in such large numbers? And where are they all coming from? Many bird species form flocks at different points during their life cycles. Grouping together offers several advantages. For one thing, there’s safety in numbers. It is harder for a predator such as a Sparrowhawk or Peregrine to home in on a single target, and there are more eyes to spot potential danger, too. There are also energetic advantages – any bird following closely behind another will benefit from the uplift created by the leading bird’s wings. This is particularly important during long-distance flights, and accounts for the classic V-formation employed by migrating geese. Perhaps less well known are the communication opportunities that flocking offers. There is evidence that birds share important information within the flock, such as where there are good sources of food. The Starlings that roost in Thetford spread out to feed over a large area of the surrounding countryside, so the roost congregations are the only chance to ‘swap stories’ about the day’s foraging. Although about 2 million pairs of Starling breed in the UK, there has been a rapid, dramatic drop in their population, particularly since the 1980s. BTO data show a decline of 89% 1967–2016, and this has seen the species’ UK conservation listing upgraded from amber to red. There have been losses elsewhere in northern Europe too; whilst the causes are not well understood, changes in pastoral farming practices are thought to be playing a big part. Despite the losses, Britain and Ireland still host more than 30 million Starlings LIKE US ON

from continental Europe, as far away western Russia, during the winter. This is the main reason why winter Starling flocks are so much larger than at other times of year. How many birds will roost in Thetford this winter depends partly on how many arrive during the coming weeks, and precisely where they will roost remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though: if there are upwards of 8,000 birds using the town as there were last winter, it’s a sight not to be missed. Wrap up warm and head out as the light starts to fade for a completely free winter wildlife spectacular!

Business & IP (Intellectual Property) Centre Hub Launch A new support hub for aspiring entrepreneurs has been set up in Thetford Library. The Business and IP (Intellectual Property) Centre at Raymond Street is the second of three hubs to be set up around Norfolk, following the establishment of a similar centre in Norwich. And officials hope the scheme will give people with business ideas the support to grow and develop them. Norfolk County Council Deputy Leader Graham Plant said: “Encouraging entrepreneurship and business growth is key to sustaining a strong economy. Libraries are ideally placed to help new and growing businesses flourish.” Sally from Sally Lowe Photography, who spoke at the launch, said: “I was honoured to share my journey so far as a business and the things I wish I had known when I first started out. I love that this kind of support is now available locally and so easily accessible. Business development is such a vital part of our economy and I look forward to seeing more entrepreneurs equipped and set for success in our town” Library staff have been trained to initial intellectual property advice on business ideas, short of any formal legal guidance. There will be on offer a regular programme of 1:1 business start-up advice, including free advice on protecting your ideas and copyright, and workshops. Officials also hope to be able to provide live streams of support events taking place at the British Library in London over the coming months. Thetford Inner Wheel At the October Dinner Meeting for Inner Wheel we were joined by District 8 Chairman Deirdre Griffin a member of Woodbridge club. She gave an address on how she became a member of Inner Wheel and was interested to hear what the enthusiastic Thetford club was doing. She will be visiting all the clubs in the District but her husband, Tom, will be President of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland in 2020-21 so life will be very busy for them both. She asked us to support the Teenage Cancer Trust at Addenbrookes Hospital as her charity. At the meeting a quiz sheet was given out to raise money for club charity funds. It consists of various Christmas related carols, sayings and songs but only the initials were given as clues. Not as easy as it first seemed! A coffee morning held in a member’s house raised over £400 to be spent on various charities the club supports. The club wishes to thank all who supported this event. Donations were given for the local Foodbank and the design for the Christmas tree in the Methodist Church later in the year was discussed. We will also be represented at the Remembrance Day Parade in Thetford.

Finally, Dorothy Boughton, a long time member, was presented with a bouquet of flowers to celebrate her very special birthday by President Cathy Witton. Visit the website for more info: www.innerwheeldistrict8.org Marian de Bass

Former Mayor Donates To Riversdale A former Mayor of Thetford has donated £1,000 to the Riversdale Centre. Denis Crawford is a passionate Thetford resident and has lived in this community since 1972. Denis later became the Mayor of Thetford and continues to be involved in numerous charities and serves as a trustee on many boards in the area. During his time as Mayor he managed to raise £6500 for the benefit of various local charities. He has kindly donated £1000 of this to Keystone, but specifically for the development and growth of the Riversdale Centre on Tanner Street.

Denis said that Riversdale has been of great support and help over the years for both him and the community. Denis often went to Riversdale himself for help and this is the reason he would like to donate to its upkeep and further development. Denis continued to use Riversdale not to receive help, but to support others, particularly the elderly and the homeless.

Rachel Harrington said: “Keystone is honoured that Denis wanted to continue to support Riversdale. We are proud and humbled to receive this donation and hope to impact many more lives as we head into the future.”

Council Commits £100k To Help Bring New Sports Pitch To Thetford Thetford's Leisure Centre is a step closer to having a brand new all-weather artificial grass football pitch installed, after nearly £100k investment was ringfenced by the district council. At its meeting on 14th October, Breckland Council's Cabinet agreed to set aside £96k to help fund the redevelopment of Breckland Leisure Centre and Waterworld's existing Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). This would see a new third-generation (3G) Artificial Grass Pitch installed as its replacement, if further external funding can be secured.

As well as being available to hire by existing teams based at the leisure centre and surrounding area, the new pitch would be used to promote opportunities and increase inclusivity, for example by hosting a 'street football league' to tackle anti-social behaviour, women's football, walking football, and disability football. West Norfolk Aviation Society It was nearly three years ago when, WNAS member, Bob Kirkham was first asked to give a talk about his own exploits serving with her Majesty's Royal Air Force. He seemed a little reticent when first approached but became more amenable with the passage of time. Following a few brushes with death defying health issues, on Tuesday 1st October, he launched into his maiden speech with a vengeance and fairly rose to the occasion. Like most airmen, from an early age, he had an obsession with the prospect of learning to fly and to becoming a pilot. At first he was an air cadet but, by his own admission, felt his academic prowess was running short of the mark to gain acceptance into the esteemed ranks of the RAF but, by sheer determination and a few lucky breaks he nevertheless succeeded with his endeavours and eventually became one of a few non-commissioned flying officers whilst still in his early twenties. He became competent and familiar with many aircraft types from chipmunks, through Jet Provosts and, eventually to the Canberra, like the one in our heading; more than that: he’s the pilot.

‘old flames’; except on this occasion it was only half a Canberra. Bob brought along, for support, his lovely wife who was able to provide the odd prompt. She was also remarkably tolerant of his confessions and references to the revelry and bawdy antics he and his colleagues had pursued; even to the allusions of ‘other old flames’.

Bob’s performance was so much appreciated by his fellow members that there was no hesitation about inviting him again next month to give another instalment of his fascinating career. Parkrunner Of The Month Our parkrunners of the month are husband and wife Mick and Sue Pleszko. Mick, 65 and Sue 64 joined Thetford parkrun in October 2016. Mick and Sue both wanted to get fitter and were encouraged by their daughter Sharon Try to join the parkrun community. Mick and Sue complete the 5k event together and reached their 100th parkrun together on the 28th September. Their slowest 5k time is 57 minutes and 47 seconds and only on 12th October they completed the event with a personal best time of 39 minutes and 39 seconds. Sue and Mick have improved their fitness and have lost weight. They have both made lots of new friends and have found the parkrun community friendly and supportive. Sue also said thank you to the dedicated volunteers and team who put on the event each week.

Thetford Town Boxing Club

Thetford Dolphins

Since the start of the boxing season in September, Thetford Town Boxing Club has been busy out at shows and other clubs sparring.

Thetford Dolphins had 68 swimmers compete at the Nifty 50s held at Thetford Waterworld and after 300 swims produced 3 new club records, 28 first places and 130 personal bests. Alfie King 16y club record for 50m back (1st/Pb) and 1st in 50m free (Pb); Alice Fasey 15y club record 50m breast; Louis James 13y club record 50m breast (1st/Pb).

We entered three of our senior boxers in the National Development Championships. Roni Dean boxed first in the Eastern Counties Final, giving 100% effort and showing clear domination, however we were very unlucky and lost on a split decision. Harry Burst boxed in the pre quarter finals, putting on a class display of boxing, with huge improvements, unfortunately again we were unlucky and lost on a split decision. Amanda Quaranto had to be withdrawn from the competition due to communication issues within England Boxing which was beyond our control. We had Harrison Murphy and Mantas Uzemeckas boxing in Norwich. Mantas won with a first round stoppage after over powering his opponent, and Harrison competed in a skills bout where he showed off his skills and completely out classed his opponent. Then we had two boxing in Milton Keynes. Joshua Payne boxed a tough opponent, held his own but lost on a unanimous decision. Harry Burst once again put on a class performance totally out skilled his opponent and won on a unanimous decision. Our team is going from strength to strength and we have also recently had two more coaches gain their level 1 coaching qualifications, meaning TTBC now has five level 1 and 3 level 2 qualified coaches, who are all volunteers. If anyone is interested in getting involved in officiating please get in touch - Norfolk really needs more officials for our boxing shows. We are looking forward to our annual black tie event taking place on December 7th 2019. If you would like to support us and get behind your local boxers please contact us for tickets or sponsorship opportunities. For further info, please e-mail: info@thetfordtownboxingclub.co.uk

Competition Success For Bowls Team

Affording Fitness

Thetford founded its very first Short Mat Bowls Club in 2016, just 3 years ago, at the Charles Burrell Centre and it has gone from strength to strength. At the end of September, two teams from the club joined the 19th Potters Cup tournament at Potters Leisure resort at Hopton on Sea, with 38 teams competing from all over the country, from Dorset to North Yorkshire. At their first appearance in this competition, both teams acquitted themselves well, but the team of Kieran Suffolk, Jason Martin and Peter Harvey bowled their way to the final of the Potters Cup on Kieran’s 16th Birthday. The final was against last year’s winners John Jeffries, Debbie Sparham and Jon Sparham from the hugely talented and experienced Wymondham Short Mat Bowls Club.

I speak to so many people a month and although everyone is different, we all have the same worries and stresses – a big one being money.

Thetford’s winning team L to R: Jason Martin, Mark Brewer from Potters, Peter Harvey and Kieran Suffolk

Norfolk County Chairman, Selwyn Goldsmith said, “There were shock finalists in the Potters Cup as the Wymondham triple found themselves facing Peter Harvey, Kieran Suffolk and Jason Martin of Thetford, one of Norfolk’s newest teams. It was a great achievement for the triple to reach the final in their first appearance in the famous International Arena. The final proved a step too far, however, for the inexperienced Thetford triple, who have only been playing the sport for 3 years, but they should be delighted to have reached the final on their debut appearance”.

I’m sure you can relate to this but one of the main reasons that either you or someone you know won’t invest in their fitness is being able to afford it - which baffles me. Thetford has many options for gyms and fitness classes and to join them really doesn’t break the bank. When you look at the price of everything we spend our cash on monthly, is the small cost of a £35 membership going to put you out? The average person may have; 1 - 2 takeaways a month - £10 per person = £20 month. May treat themselves to alcohol once a week – 2-3 pints/ 2-3 glasses of wine £4 pint/glass = £48 month. Picks up a meal deal on the way to work - £3 a day - £60 a month. These are just a few examples of what we spend our cash on but if we were to manage our time more efficiently or make cut backs on things like takeaways or alcohol we could afford a fitness membership and not only bring up our physical health but our mental health too. Recently, I compiled a break down of my costs per class on my current membership plan, this is what I found; 16 Ti30 classes a month cost the low price of £27, that's just £1.69 a class! What makes it even better? Just £35 a month grabs you a whopping 32 classes extra a month for only £8 more!! That's 48 classes a month - Just £1.37. When you break it down like that, can you really afford to not be a member? I’m offering a really good deal at the moment – Pay for one class and enjoy the rest of the week for free! If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please email me or find me on social media; ‘Tiger Fitness Thetford’ or website: www.tigerfitnessclub.co.uk

Air Ambulance’s Muddy Obstacle Run Back for 2020 With New Challenges East Anglia’s mud obstacle run Only The Brave is back in 2020 for its fifth year and early bird tickets are now on sale. The muddy obstacle run in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) takes place at Thetford Forest and is celebrating its fifth birthday, at the same time the charity celebrates 20 years of saving lives. To mark these historic milestones, the event, which saw nearly 2,000 runners take part last year, will see brand new obstacles including the kit carry bag challenge, 24/7 clock climb and the rotor scramble, as well as a new route through Elveden Estate. The popular race is set to take place on Sunday, March 29, and provides both a six and 10 mile course, with 20 to 35 obstacles, lots of mud, slides, straw bales and challenging hurdles. The event, which this year is sponsored by Mark Ewin Estate Agents, is in aid of EAAA’s life-saving work, a charity which relies on donations and operates two high-tech helicopters from its Norwich and Cambridge bases every day of the year. In February the charity launched a new campaign to raise an additional £1m annually to help them become a 24/7 service. The charity will be offering an early-bird rate until the November 30.

The early-bird rate provides several options ranging from £25 upwards. Every entry will receive an OTB official t-shirt, a medal and a goody bag when they finish the course.
