Centre Welcomes New Recruits Charles Burrell Centre has welcomed three new managers to its growing team. David Walls is the new Business Manager, overseeing the day to day operations at the centre. He has vast management experience having worked for 30 years in the commercial leisure and hospitality industry. During this time David has also volunteered in a number of community organisations. David is looking forward to working with and coaching the CBC team to continue to deliver excellent service to tenants and customers. David said; “I am really excited to be joining the Charles Burrell Centre at this time, with its very unique mix of partners ranging from charities, social groups, start up businesses to national companies and seeing the Centre grow to maximise its full potential.” Tracy Terry has joined the Centre as the Manager of The Engine Room, the new name for the old school canteen. As a former pupil of Staniforth High School, Tracy has strong links with the building as she once worked as a librarian when the school became part of Thetford Academy. Many people will have come across Tracy as part of Aya Cuisine, catering at events across the town and fundraising for The Alzheimer’s Society. Speaking about her new challenge, Tracy said; “The potential of The Engine Room is enormous and I’m really looking forward to progressing with the many ideas that we as a team have. In addition to the main café area, we are planning to create a training kitchen where we can host cooking workshops for the local community. We are also about to create a delicious new menu in The Engine Room including a wider range of breakfast items, homemade soups and a daily specials board”. Paul Cronk will be heading up the Centre’s newest venture, ‘The Forge’.

David Walls, left (Business Manager), Tracy Terry (Engine Room Manager) and Paul Cronk (Manager, The Forge)

Paul has lived in the Thetford area for over 20 year. Over the past 12 years has helped to develop a local bathroom and kitchen installation business and guiding apprentices through City & Guilds NVQ qualifications. This has had a major influence on him applying for the role at The Forge and the opportunities he feels it will offer. Paul plans to establish The Forge as a key element of Charles Burrell Centre, offering employment and training in a wide range of grounds and building maintenance roles. He is delighted that The Forge is a not for private profit business and will be working to support our local community. Chair of Charles Burrell Centre Ltd Board of Directors, Mike Brindle said, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome David, Tracy and Paul to our organisation. They all bring drive, enthusiasm and a wealth of experience that will add to our outstanding team and take the Centre forward at an exciting period of change for us.” You can contact any of the team on 01842 779867.

East Anglian Air Ambulance Charity Trek Challenge Launched

There will be seven ‘uplift stations’ along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keeping trekkers refueled and motivated. Early bird tickets will be available until midnight Sunday 2nd June and are sold on a first come first served basis. Catrina Miller, Events Manager at East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to officially launch our brand new event Trek 24 in support of our campaign to become a 24/7 service. Currently our operation runs from 7am until midnight, meaning there is a 7 hour gap in air ambulance coverage in the East of England. By extending our flying hours round the clock, we estimate that we could be there for up to 600 more patients every year.” To become a 24/7 service we do however need to raise an additional £1m a year and we have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target. Whether you want to support our 24/7 mission or just take part in a challenging and fun event, we can guarantee it will be one not to miss!

Community Event For Apprentices West Suffolk

College satelite sites celebrated National Apprentice Week with a series of events to promote apprenticeships and engage with the local community. The Thetford Campus hosted a business breakfast and launched the new free online courses available for over 19 year olds. Ian Evans Learning Centre manager explained, “We’re here in the local community. West Suffolk College are proud to offer adult learning courses and apprenticeships within Thetford. This event was a great opportunity for us to talk about the range of apprenticeships we have on offer as well as our new Ian Evans (L) with Yothin (C) and Graeme 12 week online level 2 accredited courses which are available fully funded at no cost to the learner. A member of the College’s apprenticeships team is also available within the Charles Burrell Centre to talk about what apprenticeship options there are through West Suffolk College” Speaking about the event CBC Business Manager David Walls said, “To me the College are a key tenant and another string to our bow, this sort of event attracts a wider range of the community to the centre.” The Thetford Campus attracts students from the town along with those from Attleborough, Brandon, Old Buckenham and Weeting with several looking for Engineering Apprenticeships. Yothin attended the breakfast event with his father Graeme as he is also keen to find out about openings in either engineering or accountancy. “We decided to come along this morning as the Thetford campus is close to home” explained Yothin, “I did start a Uni course but decided that I’d rather learn in the workplace so an apprenticeship would be perfect especially if it was somewhere local.” For more information about WSC Thetford Campus visit; www.wsc.ac.uk or email: ian.evans@wsc.ac.uk

Diamond Celebration for Couple Mick and Irene Hill celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss with friends and family at a celebration held at Lord Walsingham Court.

Mick and Irene Hills celebrating 60 years of happy marriage

The couple who live at Lord Walsingham Court were joined by fellow residents who had got together and organised balloon decorations, flowers, copies of their wedding photos and presented a voucher as a gift, as Mick and Irene didn’t want guests to buy gifts. Penny organised a star to be named Diamond Hills in the constellation of Capricornus. Taking a trip down memory lane, the couple started their party with a first dance to Vera Lynn’s Wedding Anniversary Waltz. Bill Hailey’s Rock Around The Clock soon got people on their feet and joining in. Irene said she was on cloud nine on her wedding day, “We saved up £700 for our wedding but we didn’t mind. We had a big family celebration at the Co-Op Hall” The couple who married in Bromley, moved to Thetford in 1964 when Mick became an Engineer at Thermos. Mick worked at Thermos for over 35 years, whilst Irene looked after their family. “My mate told me that there were jobs going in a town called Thetford, and if you got one it came with a house. The next day I applied for a job at Thermos and we moved to Elm Road fairly quickly after that. We’ve had a happy life in the town”.

Joining in the fun was Mick’s sister Peggy, her Grandaughter Sydnee and Sydnee’s new baby Hattie, who was meeting her Great Great Uncle and Aunt for the first time. Mick said, “After retiring to Mundford we’re glad to be back in the town and amongst our friends and family.”

Open Day Success for U3A Over 100 people flocked to the Carnegie Rooms to find out what’s on offer from one of the town’s most successful voluntary organisations. With over 400 members and 40 clubs on offer from creative arts, languages, music and sport to day trips and holidays, Thetford U3A has something to offer everyone. On the 4th Thursday afternoon of each month there is a meeting at the Carnegie with a speaker and the opportunity to find out what’s going on in the various groups. Alongside the groups showcasing their activities were Thetford Fire Station offering advice on fire safety in the home, offering free home fire risk checks and sharing the importance of having working smoke alarms installed. The Day Trip Group have over 100 members and are the biggest group within Thetford U3A. “Our motto is ‘learn, laugh, live, enjoy!” said group leader Gerald Bass, “We host a visit each month and usually get 50 members on each trip.” The trips are varied to accommodate members interests, including an annual Mystery Trip and April will see the group’s first shopping trip. Other groups are on a smaller scale but no less enjoyable, the Art and Handicraft groups have 12 members each who enjoying working together a variety of projects. The Antiques and Collectibles group are another small group who are restricted in size because they meet in a house, “We’ve had quite a bit of interest today so rather than having a long waiting list we may look at starting a second group” explained member Malcolm Roth, “It’s an excellent organisation, there are so many groups and if you can’t find one you like, you can even start up one of your own. The monthly speakers we have are excellent too.” For more information about Thetford U3A visit the website: https://u3asites.org.uk/thetford

Young Volunteers Needed To Help With Library Summer Reading Challenge Young reading enthusiasts are needed to help Norfolk children choose reading books, and help them complete an exciting challenge at libraries this summer. Norfolk County Council’s Library and Information Service is looking for volunteers aged 13-25 to get involved in this year’s Space-themed "Space Chase" Summer Reading Challenge, due to start in July. Last year more than 11,500 children took part. The annual reading event for primary school children involves borrowing and reading at least six different books, getting rewards including stickers and a certificate and medal when the challenge is complete. The scheme relies on the help of up to 150 young volunteers who support Norfolk Library staff at each of the 47 libraries. “Young volunteers are vital to supporting the Summer Reading Challenge within libraries. We find that children really look up to their teenage peers and the volunteers are fantastic advocates for reading. They really help youngsters to keep up their reading skills throughout the summer holidays" said Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of the Council's Communities Committee.

Imogen Pearce, a UEA student aged 20 volunteered her time last year at the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium library, she said; “I absolutely love reading and I love talking to people about novels. I believe it is incredibly important to encourage individuals to read both for educational purposes and as a relaxing, stress-relieving pastime. So, when I was looking for work experience and I came across the volunteer scheme for the Summer Reading Challenge I knew it would be perfect”. Volunteering sessions take place between mid-July and beginning of September, during the school holidays. We ask for a commitment of 2 hours per week although there can be scope to do more, depending on the activities which are running. Volunteers who are undertaking a Duke of Edinburgh award can use their volunteering towards the awards with a volunteering element. All young volunteers will receive a certificate to recognise their contribution and the library service offers young volunteers a reference for applications for work or further study. If you are interested in helping out this summer, speak to staff at your local library or to request an application pack email: volunteercontact@norfolk.gov.uk

Students Create New Film Place 21 is run by West Suffolk College and is ‘project based learning’ where students go on work experience to gain valuable skills for working life. West Suffolk College students are currently working on the project at the Charles Burrell Centre in partnership with Mill House Media and Just Another Label Ltd. Tom Everitt, Max Barnett, Tom Gerrell, Millie Atherton, Abigail Regester are the students working on the project, they are all local to Thetford. The project will consist of a 24 page report and a promotional video about the site called, ‘Social Enterprise: Stories of the Charles Burrell Centre’. Included in the report will be the history of Charles Burrell Centre, information on the tenants that are based there and future development plans. Tom Everitt said, “This project is to demonstrate social enterprise and to show how the Charles Burrell Centre is at the heart of the community.” The 2 minute film will present Charles Burrell Centre as a busy and friendly environment to be in. Both the report and video will be released on May 1st at the Place 21 Skills and Industry Forum event. Once released each tenant will receive a copy of the report and will be encouraged to watch the short film. The film will be available on the West Suffolk College website, social media platforms and the Charles Burrell Centre website. The project is designed so that people recognise what the Charles Burrell Centre offers and more local people interact with the tenants that work there. Andrew Wheeler, Place 21 Programme Manager, said “The project is going well and I’m particularly pleased to see West Suffolk College students using the skills they have learnt in their business Level 3 course to make a success of this project”. Thetford And District Dementia Support

What Is The Hope Course?

At the beginning of March, TADDS was very grateful to receive a donation from Ashtons Legal Charitable Trust, part of Ashtons Solicitors. The donation was for a whopping £1,500!

If you have a cancer diagnosis it is an opportunity for you to meet and share with others who have gone through the same experiences, learning new skills to help you move on after having cancer. We meet together, usually 6-8 participants, in relaxed and sociable surroundings once a week for 6 weeks for two and a half hours in the morning. Our next Thetford course starts on Wednesday 24th April until Wednesday 29th May and is free with refreshments. Linda, one of the participans said, “Going to the Hope Course made me more relaxed and I had more energy and patience and I now mix more and am able to make more friends. It really changed my life, it was reassuring that I was not on my own”.

Christina Findell who works for Ashtons Legal, nominated the charity after the death of her father-in-law Ron Findell, who had been a long time volunteer and supporter of TADDS since its creation 4 years ago. Sadly Ron died towards the end of last year. Featured alongside her co-workers in the photo is Christina holding Ron’s Great Grandson. On behalf of the members and trustees of TADDS, CEO Jo Mountjoy-Dixon would like to thank Ashtons for the extremely generous donation and support to our Charity. The money will continue to support local people affected by dementia or caring for someone with this condition. Some facts about dementia: - There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. - 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. - 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia. - 70 per cent of people in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems. - There are over 40,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK. - Two thirds of the cost of dementia is paid by people with dementia and their families. For more information about TADDS, visit their website: www.thetford-dementia-support-group.org

Discover Dinosaurs And Fossils At Your Local Museum! Discover some Decidedly Dangerous Dinosaurs and Fascinating Fossils this April at Ancient House Museum! The area which we now know as Thetford was once home to some strange and unusual creatures. Discover the fascinating tales of the creatures that lived here before us at Ancient House, Museum of Thetford Life on Tuesday 9th April from 10-1pm. For just £2 visitors can get hands on with real fossils, make their very own dinosaur craft to take home and even learn about the discovery of dinosaur remains by creating their very own “Palaeontologist’s Pudding!”

”An exciting discovery from this area was of woolly mammoth bones and tusks found alongside flint tools made by Neanderthal people. The remains of these mammoths were discovered by archaeologists at Lynford, not far from Thetford, along with remains of woolly rhinoceros and other extinct mammals. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to this family friendly event to find out more about the area’s ancient past and the incredible creatures that once lived here.” Running from 10.00am until 1.00pm, the Discovery Day is a drop-in event, so no need to book. The charge is £2 per person, or £1 per person for Friends of Ancient House, Museums Pass holders, Museums Association and Art Fund members with a valid card and Children’s University members. This includes admission to the museum. There will also be a fun, family museum trail to keep you entertained. Dinosaurs! runs from Saturday 6th until Saturday 13th April and costs just 50p per person plus museum admission, and includes a small prize.

Ancient House Museum Opening Times:

Tues to Sat; 10am - 5pm. Telephone: 01842 752599 Handle some ancient ammonite fossils at Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life this month

Museum Curator, Oliver Bone, said, “It is fascinating to think that millions of years ago the Thetford area was completely submerged and carnivorous reptiles once swam in the warm sea here. This was the time when our familiar flint and chalk was slowly being formed. It’s great that this event gives visitors the chance to get close to fossils of some of the smaller sea creatures.”

After the AGM we will have Paige Langton from the Dogs Trust speaking to us, plus she will be bringing one of her dogs with her. Last month we had two speakers from Honey Legal telling us how important it is to have not only a basic will but also a power of attorney. On March 28th we had Ed Crichton from Lacey Scott and Knight visit. Members had the opportunity to bring some of their precious items for him to value so it made an interesting afternoon. This month Linda Brightman the group leader of our music groups wants anyone who has an interest in music to either call her on 01842 761739 or go along on Monday mornings to either the Croxton Village Hall or the Church on the Way to either join in or listen to their music. In the five years since beginning the group, the number of members joining have increased from 6 to 7 to at least 25, in fact because of the success they have there are now two groups. Popular music of all styles are played and they are often invited to play at a number of venues. Every Christmas they don Santa outfits and play for our Christmas parties. The groups together have a grand total of 340 years of experience with individual players experience ranging from 1 to 77 years. Overall they emphasise they do this primarily for fun plus learning from each other. This is a very friendly group and new members will be warmly welcomed. More info will be on our website or you can telephone 01842 824074.

Commonly Believed Myths I thought it would be interesting to dispel some of the myths clients often ask us when having skin care and body treatments. “Eating chocolate makes my skin breakout in spots!” Myth. Chocolate does not cause breakouts. It does however contain high sugar and fat content, so too much would not be good as a high fat diet can make the skin oilier. “Are the white marks on my nails caused by Calcium deficiency?” Myth. It is not a deficiency in calcium that causes white spots but there are several other reasons we may get them. It could be injury to the nail base, bad manicure procedures pushing back cuticles too harshly, an allergic reaction to things like polishes or polish remover even some harsh hardeners. Acrylic nails can also cause trauma. Zinc deficiency is also a cause of white spots or streaks and can be corrected with diet. Protein deficiency shows as horizontal bands across the nail bed, they do not grow out. Diets rich in protein, turkey, fish, tuna, salmon, tofu, nuts, seeds all help. There are some serious diseases that present symptoms like white spots on the nails. Therefore, it is extremely important to see a doctor if you notice any discolorations in your nails. Liver disease, like hepatitis and cirrhosis, is one serious cause of white spotted fingernails. Kidney disease also has symptoms that affect the nails, such as nails that are possibly white and pink. “I am thinking of having some sunbeds before my holiday to prevent my skin from burning”. Myth. A sunbed will not protect your skin from burning simply because you have accelerated the melanin (pigment ) in your skin. There is no such thing as a ‘safe’ tan, the skin goes darker in colour because it is trying to protect the body from ultra-violet light. The UK now has the highest reported cases of skin cancer in the world! Not something for us to be proud of. It has never been more important to be sensible and prevent burning or over exposing the skin to sun damage and wearing a high factor 25/30 sunblock. Happy Easter! Thetford Inner Wheel

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses

At our March meeting President Jenny Childerhouse was delighted to welcome Molly Izzard as a new member. She was inducted in our 60th year.

Thetford Lionesses held a Bear fundraising evening in aid of Medibears at the home of Lioness Lesley.

Molly Izzard, new member of Thetford Inner Wheel

During the meeting it was decided to send £100 to the Association President’s charity Jessie’s Fund. This is a charity which supports children on a one to one basis through music. A further £100 was sent to Asperger East Anglia to help support those suffering from this syndrome and their carers in this area. At our District meeting later in the month, when clubs from all over East Anglia gathered, we heard from Thecla Fellas, the CEO, about the excellent work carried out. She was keen to say how grateful they were for the donations Inner Wheel clubs have given. This is our District Chairman’s chosen Charity. An entertaining quiz on teddy bears was followed by light refreshments. A ‘name a teddy’ competition was won by Lioness Trisha. ‘Perry’ was the winning name. Staff at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital are using teddy bears with a “health problem” to help to reassure young patients on the ward. The bears may be fitted with medical devices such as hearing aids, bandages, having crutches or needing a cannula, and pace makers. The bears help the children become familiar with the medical devices and help to reduce their worries. A Medibear is something that can be seen as being in the same situation as the young patient. The Lionesses raised in excess of £120. The money raised will enable other local hospitals to provide Medibears to young patients. Forthcoming Events:

This month’s Thetford Face is Jaden Jermy. Despite being only 14 years old, Jaden has been making waves in the world of chess and is currently ranked 4th in the Country for his age group. Have you always lived in Thetford, what do you like the best about the town? Yes, I love living here. There’s loads of wildlife and I really enjoy going to Thetford Grammar School where I have a scholaship because of my chess. How old were you when you started playing chess? I was 7 and entered my first competition when I was 10 years old. My friends at Norwich Road School encouraged me to join a club they went to run by Kevin Moore at Thetford Academy on Wednesday evenings. How did you progress from there? Kevin Moore taught me the basics, but it was my home progress that made me develop. I watched loads of YouTube clips and tried the moves out at the club. Most of my friends were way better than me at the time but I think I was the only one using YouTube and I quickly caught up! What do you love about playing chess? I find it really relaxing, it’s a mindful game. I’ve learnt to be able to work through stressful situations and to timings because of chess. I’ve learnt how to cope with losses, I used to get upset when I lost at first. I play with people of all ages, so I’ve been able to make lots of new friends from different backgrounds. It’s definitely helped with school exams.

Jaden during filming at school for BBC Look East in 2017

Jaden with the Norwich Open 2019 trophy, his most recent win in March

Do you ever play against members of your family? No one in my family plays chess, it’s not really normal for the level I play at. Usually for my age group at the level I play, kids come from chess backgrounds or their parents book a coach for the entire weekend. My 2 year old sister now sneaks pieces off the board, I go off to get a drink and when I return the Rooks have gone! Sometimes she hides the pieces too! Do you still play in Thetford? I moved to Bury Knights when I was 9 and was coached by Bob Jones who has taught chess to kids as a volunteer for over 25 years. Bob introduced me to tournaments and helped me until I reached the point of needing a higher-level coach. When I first played him, I thought he was the best! It’s quite a big deal to me to be a higher grade than him now. Who do you play for now? I joined the England Junior squad when I was 12. During the week I play at Bury St Edmund’s Chess Club, I also play for Suffolk U18, I’m in the Suffolk County 1st team and I’m the youngest junior on the team and in the Suffolk League.

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 28

Sometimes I play as part of a team, other times it’s as an individual. At the moment I’m also playing in the Norfolk Grand Prix which is an individual contest across 4 tournaments. Last time I took part I played against 20 of Norfolk’s best players including several titleholders and came 3rd. Currently the Suffolk County team are through to the last 16 in a national county competition. How do your friends react to your chess playing? My friends at school all think it’s a cool way to make money when I win although it’s usually only £25 to £50 which helps to cover travel and hotel costs. I enjoyed having Look East come into school when I first joined the England squad. Outside of chess I like gaming and playing football. I used to play for Thetford Indies, Thetford Bulldogs, Lakenheath and then I went through the Cambridge United, Norwich and Ipswich Academies. When I’m not at chess I play for Brandon Lads now. You often play with much older people; how do they react to playing against a much younger person? Some are really supportive, but one or two are not keen on seeing a younger person win. That just encourages me to play better and win more! I’ve been really lucky to have Mike Harris, Norfolk’s highest ranked player, coach me over the past two years. However, I now need a new coach, ideally International or Grandmaster level. Hopefully I can find someone and use Skype otherwise it’s going to involve lots more travelling. I’m not on my own, there are 3 other really good players from Thetford who I can play with, although they’re a bit older than me, they’re great to talk chess with! My biggest surprise was when one of my teachers turned up at a tournament, he was the the top seed in the competition. I was drawn against him in the first round. He won the 1st game and we drew the 2nd. What’s next for your chess career? My ambition is to become a title player by the time I’m 16 if I can get through the right number of tournaments and coaching. I’d like to study medicine eventually but pursue chess at the same time. I’m looking for sponsorship to help with travel costs and coaching at the moment. I’d really like to write a Chess for kids book and I’d also really like to coach some kids and get them into the Delancey Schools Competition. I’ve done a bit of coaching at school and really enjoyed it. If you can help Jaden with his chess through sponsorship, please get in touch with his mother, Michelle on 07725 582817

Lawn Care Tips From Fenland Spirit At Fenland Spirit Services we service and repair lawn mowers and garden machinery, as well as refurbish and sell pre-owned machinery. If you need a replacement lawnmower or if yours needs some TLC please get in touch, don’t throw it away! We are based at Littleport, just outside Ely. Spring Lawn Care Tips Taking care of your lawn in the spring isn’t always an easy task. The unreliable weather can wreak havoc with your plans, and April showers might delay that first cut. But, weather permitting - here’s how you can start to get your lawn in perfect condition before summer: 1. Ensure The Lawn Is Dry: It’s likely that your lawn is still very wet at the beginning of spring, be wary about starting to mow it again. Always check that the lawn is dry before attempting to cut it – if it’s wet you might do more harm than good. 2. Start Mowing On A Higher Setting: When you do begin to mow your garden, use the lawnmower on a higher setting. That way you’re only trimming the top off the grass and can avoid damaging the lawn whilst it’s still a little damp.

Lawncare Tips provided by Fenland Spirit Services

5. Sow Seeds To Replenish Bare Patches: If you notice that your grass is full of bare patches after the first cut, don’t panic: you can still have the perfect lawn by the end of the season. Simply sow more seeds to replenish the patches. The spring weather is perfect for growing new grass. To buy a refurbished mower with a warranty, visit Fenland Spirit Services 28 Ten Mile Bank, Littleport, CB6 1EE or call 0775 383 6499 or you can find us on Facebook, please give our page a like: www.facebook.com/fenlandspiritservices/

3. Don’t Mow More Than Once A Week: Avoid trimming your lawn more than once a week. Too much and it may become damaged and unhealthy. We don’t want it to vanish completely! 4. Kill Moss & Weeds: If you haven’t done any gardening over the winter, you might notice an abundance of moss and weeds in your lawn. Spring is the perfect time to spray your garden with weed killer, as well as giving your grass the feed of nutrients it needs to grow healthily. N D il PE N r O EKE Ap E 28 W & 27

Winners and their guests will be invited to the awards evening which takes place in July in Norwich. All of the winners will be presented with a framed certificate as a record of their achievement. The judges will be looking for evidence of biodiversity enhancement, as well as the degree of community involvement, and also the project long-term sustainability. Norfolk Community Biodiversity Awards are organised annually by Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership (NBP), an established partnership working to co-ordinate and share initiatives to conserve biodiversity across Norfolk. The Awards have been sponsored by Kelling Heath Holiday Park for Young People’s Achievement, The Landscape Partnership for Group Award; Pensthorpe Natural Park for Nature for Health and Wellbeing; BIRDscapes for Saving Species, R and J Hogg for Churchyards and Cemeteries and Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership for the Above & Beyond Award. David North, Chair of the NBP Communities and Nature Topic Group that organises the Awards, said: "Across Norfolk many individual volunteers and community groups are working hard to look after and improve local wildlife sites. This crucial work deserves to be widely known about and celebrated.

Garden And Allotment Club Notes April is ‘Garden Month’ in the USA and I think we can all join in the celebrations. This is certainly the month when many plants erupt into life – cherished perennials and weeds alike. You will be busy – but take time out to visit the Spring Show at the Methodist Church Hall on Saturday 6th – between 8.30am and 10.45am to enter exhibits and from 1pm till 3pm to browse around. Although daffodils and tulips take pride of place there is a culinary section and even a class for Easter bonnets. The ground should be warm enough in the veg patch for many seeds to be planted now. If you have had problems with leek moth, use some fleece to protect the seedlings from the egg-laying adults which are around this month. Traditionally potatoes are planted on Good Friday – as the date varies so much from year to year, it is maybe just a reminder to get going. Quite a lot of digging and bending is required to grow potatoes so be kind to your back and don’t try to get the job done all in one go if you are not at peak physical fitness (yet). Some seeds can be started in the greenhouse or indoors with a plan to harden them off in a cold frame before planting out – it is always a game of chance to calculate when the last frost has happened and you can risk courgettes and runner bean plants outside – perhaps use some of your seed for an early planting and plan for a later sowing. In the flower garden hardy annual seeds can be planted but do not risk tender bedding unless you know you have an exceptionally sheltered corner – there are usually frosts still to come in this county and especially in the Brecks. Some plants, for example roses, grow very vigorously and will thank you for a dressing of fertiliser. If you plan to sow a new lawn or repair patches with seed, April is a good time to get growth started with mild and damp weather. In an established lawn you may

Watch out for adult Leek Moth this month have problems with moss and two of the causes can be given attention now; one issue can be compaction and this requires aeration either with a special tool or with a fork over a small area; another common problem can be the acidity of the soil which can be counteracted by the application of lime or chalk. A third problem can be cutting the grass too short; setting the cutter blade at about a height of 3 cm will help the grass but does mean fairly frequent cutting to look neat – however that in turn means you can leave the grass box off and let the clippings drop back onto the ground and provide some nutrients. This is assuming we get some rain this summer and do not end up with crispy-crunchy brown lawn areas… Fruit trees will be coming into blossom this month and if you have a particularly cherished tree it is possible to protect the flowers or newly set fruits from frost with fleece if you get sufficient warning from a weather forecast. If you are considering where to plant an early flowering tree take note of where the early sun strikes as it can be the scorching effect of the rising sun after a cold night that damages the blooms of camellias and magnolias rather than just the cold. Sometimes a north or west facing position can be kindest. Our speaker for the monthly meeting is Karen Kenny who will talk about ‘Allotments Then And Now’ which should give us some insight into trends and traditions. The meeting is at 7.15pm for 7.30pm start at the United Reformed Church, Thursday 25th April. Non-members are very welcome. We have a Facebook site if members have photographs or information to share. Sue Pilgrim Deadline for inclusion in the May 2019 About Thetford magazine will be the 15th April. How Much Wood Would A Woodpecker Peck? It depends on the type of woodpecker, of course! With so much forest nearby, it’s perhaps no surprise that all three of the UK’s breeding woodpeckers can be found around Thetford: Green, Great Spotted and Lesser Spotted. If you have bird feeders that are visited by woodpeckers, it is most likely to be Great Spotted. Data collected by volunteer birdwatchers for BTO’s Garden BirdWatch survey www.bto.org/gbw show that these black-andwhite woodpeckers have shot up from being seen in one in five gardens in the mid 1990s to as many as one in three now. They are Starling-sized, weighing around 80 grams – that’s about the same as a satsuma – but certainly ‘peck above their weight’. For one thing, they advertise their territories by striking their beaks on wood up to 20 times per second! This is called ‘drumming’ and early spring is a great time to listen for this distinctive sound ringing around any patch of woodland. Like the other species, Great Spotted Woodpeckers excavate their own nest holes in dead wood, one example of why standing dead trees are so important.

Later in the year, the red cap of young Great Spotted Woodpeckers can lead to confusion with the smaller, stripier and much rarer Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Photo by John Harding/BTO

The largest and perhaps most conspicuous of our woodpeckers is the Green Woodpecker: a bit bigger and bulkier than a Blackbird and weighing in at 190 grams – about the same as a large smartphone. This is a mossy-green bird, with a red cap and black markings around the face. The lower back is a brighter yellowish -green, the feature most likely to catch your eye. If you disturb one you’ll see it fly away, with its characteristic ‘bounding’ or undulating flight. Green Woodpeckers are more often heard than seen as they are quite shy but give a far-carrying call: a somewhat manic sounding series of laughing notes that fall slightly in pitch. This sound is the ‘yaffle’, popularised by Professor Yaffle – an animated Green Woodpecker in the 1970s children’s television series ‘Bagpuss’. When it comes to pecking wood, Green Woodpeckers are in last place: whilst they dig their own nest holes in dead wood, they rarely drum and are specialist ant-eaters, which they snaffle up with Sullivan 1 14/12/2016 the help of1-8th a long,Advert_Layout flexible tongue and sticky saliva.08:28 Page

Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers are tiny – we’re talking sparrow-sized, weighing about the same as an AA battery! We are very fortunate to have any at all locally as their population has suffered a dramatic decline; the latest figures suggest there are fewer than 2,000 pairs left in the UK. The towering poplars along the Little Ouse, particularly around Santon Downham, usually hold a handful of pairs – one of the reasons that area is so popular with the many birdwatchers who visit the Brecks in spring. Their diminutive size and habit of staying high in the canopy makes them very hard to see, particularly once the trees are in leaf.

Loss of habitat is species (figures a major factor - it is estimated that 97% of the bee’s natural from 2017) habitat has been lost due to a change in farming practices. The widespread use of pesticides both within the farming industry and

Add to this, diseases and mites and threats remains of honey such as the Asian Hornet on the horizon and it becomes clear bees have been found that we have a huge problem. dating back 150 million Why is this so important? Talk to your local Councillor to press for areas of wild flower seeds to be planted anywhere there is a piece of unused ground. You can plant flowers that bees and other pollinators need, leave areas in which wild plants can flourish and don’t be in a hurry to pull up native plants such as Dandelions, they provide a vital early foodstuff for bees. It is easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed by huge global issues, but I have some good news to share with you too. We do need Government, Councils and large organisations to act. For example Amsterdam decided to take positive action and public areas were planted with native wild flowers, pesticides were banned and bee hotels were erected throughout the city. As a result, Amsterdam has seen its bee population increase by 45%.But we as individuals can make simple but positive changes to our own environment to help our bees.

Paulina’s Passion Inspires New Business A new Photography Studio has opened at the Charles Burrell Centre. Paulina Niedbala, owner and also photographer at FotoArt Studio talks about her photography journey. “Ever since I was a little girl, I've always loved taking photographs. To me there is a real magic in capturing that special moment forever, and a good photograph is worth so much more than just the paper it’s printed on”. An example of a newborn image taken by Paulina in her studio at Charles Burrell Centre

FotoArt Studio photographer Paulina Niedbala image: Rod Edwards Photography

“I started to shoot professionally back in 2010, and have been developing my photography business ever since. Initially I was photographing in a small studio space in my home, but as interest in my work developed, I needed to move out to somewhere bigger and better. Now I mainly specialise in children and new-born baby photography. I have taken time to carefully master studio lighting and posing techniques that allow me to capture this magical time in a child's life safely and comfortably. I've also had the pleasure of working alongside some of my favourite photographers including the well-known London based new-born and family photographer Russ Jackson. I promised myself that when I have my own studio I will create many lasting memories with quality products that can be cherished forever, not just a run of the mill commercial service. I’ve also developed a real passion for timeless portraits

and wedding photography. I believe that portraits really come to life when they are carefully printed and displayed in your home, and this is what I offer my customers. It is important to me to develop connections with my clients, so that together we can plan a shoot that is fully designed around them. My studio has a talented hair and make-up artist Anna, who can offer a little pampering before the photo is taken, allowing every women to feel beautiful and confident throughout the whole session. The FotoArt Studio booking fee is £100, this fee covers consultation, photo shoot and viewing. You will then recieve three 8”x 6” high-res images printed on professional quality paper and matching digital files, that can be shared on social media alongside the opportunity to purchase more images if you wish to do so. Your chosen prints will be presented to you in a beautiful Memory Box and a gift bag. FotoArt Studio also proudly supports the ‘I am more #SeeMe”’campaign run by wellness specialist Michelle Jermy. I offer gift vouchers, which make the perfect gift for any occasion, and I am currently offering Easter MINIS. What Is Coaching?

Rotary Celebrate Anniversary

Imagine for a moment that you have a ‘skilled helper’. Through discussion, this helper can explore and also understand a current life or work issue you may have, making sure they have all the relevant information. This may include how you perceive your situation, what you like; what you love; what you don’t like, your abilities, challenges and your dreams. Then, through listening, talking and therapeutic exercises, you can explore your ideal outcome. We can consider what you believe is stopping you e.g. stress, procrastination, fear, unhelpful thinking styles, etc. These forces are not to be under estimated and require special attention if they are to be overcome successfully.

At the Club’s meeting in March members celebrated the 64th anniversary of the granting of their Charter to the Club. The evening took the form of a dinner at the Thomas Paine Hotel, and members were joined by the Immediate Past President of Diss Club, the President and two members of Brandon Club, and the Chair of Thetford’s Satellite club, Rotary@CBC. All were entertained by an amusing and informative talk from Charlie Haylock, who is a well-known expert on dialects, in particular the dialect from his home county of Suffolk. The Rotary Club was pleased, once again, to help raise funds for the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal. As illustrated on the front cover of last months About Thetford, Rotary members, together with their wives, and members of Rotary@CBC collected funds at Tesco on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd February. A very successful collection raised £1,635.50 thanks to the generosity of the public, and thanks also to Tesco for allowing access for the collection. Rotary@CBC are hosting an Easter themed quiz on Friday 12th April, full details are on page 4 of this month’s magazine. For more information about Thetford Rotary, or to join, please email: secretary@thetfordrotary.org

In a non-judgemental setting, we can then tap into your creativity and encourage development of new perspectives, enabling you to look forward to creating the life or work that you really want. It can be hard to change personally or professionally but given the right conditions anything is possible. Don’t you owe it to yourself to live your best life? If you’d like to know more, please contact 07925325644 for a free consultation. Andy Colley (pictured)

Wretham Village Hall Is 50 Years Old April 19th 2019 sees the Golden Jubilee of a village facility in the centre of Wretham. The present Village Hall replaced an old army hut, a relic of the First World War, after local people set about fund raising from 1960. By 1966 a public meeting agreed on the scheme and by 1967 work could start after about £1,000 was raised by villagers, with a donation of £500 and Norfolk Education Committee grant of £3891. Total cost was £82,000 and £7,000 had been raised when it was officially opened by Lord Fisher of Kilverstone. W. and JB Eastwood, who established a chicken rearing business in the village, made a seven year cash contribution. Since then, the hall has been extended and improved, with catering grade kitchen and storage, new toilets and disabled facilities. Most recently, exercise equipment has been installed in the grounds and the first stage of car park resurfacing completed.

Breckland Cats Protection Did you know that cats and dogs can be blood donors to other cats and dogs? For cats the criteria to be a blood donor is that the cat must be between 1 year and 8 years old, and weigh at least 4kg. They should preferably be an indoor cat, otherwise they must be Feline Leukaemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus negative, be up to date with their vaccines and flea and worm treatment. They must never have been outside the UK and not be on any medication. They must be of good temperament and be easy to handle. They will undergo health checks for heart murmurs and haematology and biochemistry blood samples will be taken for analysis to make sure they are completely healthy. In cats there are 3 different blood groups – A, B and AB. Most domestic cats are group A, along with all Siamese cats. Pedigree cats are predominately group B. To take the blood, the cat will be sedated and the blood will be taken from a vein in the neck. About 55ml of blood is taken, then exactly the same amount of electrolyte solution is administered to the cat, to protect its blood pressure. For dogs the same criteria as for cats apply for them to become blood donors. 1 – 8 years old, weigh more than 25kg, be up to date with their vaccinations and flea and worm treatment, not be on any medication and never to have been outside the UK. There are 2 blood groups in dogs, DEA1 Negative and DEA1 Positive. 30% of dogs are negative so they are the universal donor as negative blood can be given to positive dogs, but not the other way round. Large dog breeds are used, especially Greyhounds. Other breeds used include Dobermans, Boxers, German Shepherds, Retrievers, Airdale Terriers, Weimaraners and English Bull Terriers. The reason a cat or dog may need a transfusion are numerous. Some of the more common needs for a transfusion are anaemia, ruptured spleen, surgery, rat poisoning, as this causes

internal bleeding, such as road traffic accidents, sepsis, cancer, kidney disease, infections and auto immune problems. Thankyou for all those cat owners who took part in our neutering campaign during February. Vouchers were sent out for 149 cats to be neutered. Let's hope they are all neutered, to help keep the cat population down. If you still have not returned your Proof of Neutering Certificate, I would be grateful if you would return it. I have only received 26 back so far! For advice or information, or if you require help with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

Don’t Panic We’re ‘Off The Cuff’ When a speaker doesn’t turn up on the day they are due to give a talk, Dad’s Army character Corporal Jones’ often repeated line comes to mind – ‘Don’t Panic!’ And that’s exactly Thetford Probus’ response to a ‘no show’ predicament, all thanks to veteran speakers among its membership. So, at the club’s March meeting, long-serving member Dan Jeffrey stepped into the breach with an ‘off the cuff’ talk, drawing on his vast range of interests covering everything from the scientific – before retiring he headed research and development at Jeyes - to many aspects of community involvement. On this occasion he focussed on housing development in the Thetford area and how some years ago, when tens of thousands of new houses were first planned for the whole Eastern Region, he and others who cared about the impact this would have on the existing area, carried out an in-depth investigation. The approach they took was to visit similarly affected towns to gain as much information about other major housing developments and get a better picture of what was happening. Their findings were generally that, while there is a need for more houses, planning often lacked a coherent approach and, that most worryingly, showed little thought about improving infrastructure such as roads and transport links, schools, health and leisure facilities to cope with the expansion and to ensure existing communities were not adversely affected. Former Tesco executive, Tony Dobbin, followed with another related topic; that of retailing and how Tesco had played a key part shaping the way we shop today. It is exactly 100 years since the founder of the behemoth company set out his market stall in the East End of London with just £30 demob money invested in

surplus foods no longer needed by the military. Jack Cohen proved a consummate salesman, but perhaps more importantly, a skilful buyer and this combination laid the foundations for what has become a world ranking leader in retail, blazing the trail in self-service, supermarkets, superstores and internet shopping. Members were delighted to welcome new member Frank Nicodema. There was also a presentation of a gift to mark the retirement of Hanbury Court manager Jim Fletcher. This was in appreciation of his help in setting up facilities for the club’s monthly meetings. Tony Dobbin, Probus Club

Thetford Junior Hockey Club In the rain and the wind Thetford took a team of 11 to an under 12s, 7 a-side tournament at Watton. Scarlett Simmonds and Niamh Walker as goalkeepers, Ella Brimson, Ella Aylott, Poppy Harper, Charis Gourlay adding experience. Bethany Kane (who has never played in a tournament before) and Lucie Everitt plus Ella Harrison and Rainbow Allen who made their tournament debut. Thetford played against some of the biggest teams in Norfolk in which they played well and didn't look out of place. A really well taken goal from Charis got Thetford a 1-0 win against Norwich City getting them off to a brilliant start. Unfortunately that was followed by a 1-0 defeat against Norwich City Tigers in a game that Thetford was unlucky to lose with Thetford having the better chances. Pelicans were up next and Town held firm for a 0-0 draw. The day ended with two narrow 1-0 defeats against Magpies and Norwich Dragons. Thetford then finished 5th in the tournament but gained some much needed game experience. Thetford boys took a mixture of experience and youth to an Under 12s tournament. With the ever reliable Charlie Jeanes in goal on his birthday and in his new kit, Max Javis and Gregory Hodgkinson rotating and the strong Casey Minar-Kolade in defence, Thetford got a well deserved draw against Pelicans. Magpies were up next with William Gourlay upfront and the tricks of the brilliant Jamie Taylor in midfield pulling the strings. It was not long before Jamie scored. Which meant Thetford won 1-0. The last game of the day was against Norwich Dragons. Thetford played their best yet and really should have scored, but lost. In the end had to make do with a single goal from the ever improving Jacob Tarita. Thetford finished an amazing 2nd in their Group. Barry Reynolds

She recovered from breast cancer in 2012 and, after walking the course with friends for the last three years, is to run the five miles this year - already meaning regular training runs around her home village of Wretham. Her participation has special meaning. She will remember a former colleague Sarah Parkinson and, much closer to home, the death from cancer of her Windmill Lane neighbour Kerry-Jane Whymant Morris, who died just 51. Burning Fat – Your Heart Rate Our heart rate is a real big sign of how hard we’re working when exercising. Obviously, the buckets of sweat and fatigue are great signs too but generally we can rely on our heart rates to tell us if we’re working hard or not hard enough. To find your maximum heart rate you need to take your age and minus it from 220. For example; 220 - 30 = 190. A 30 year old would have a maximum heart rate of 190 and would not expect their heart to be working passed that number during exercise. I mean, 190 is high and to reach that you’d have to be really going some! So, what’s the best rate for burning fat? You’d be looking at 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate. Going back to the 30 year old example, they’d be looking at around the 130bpm mark.Keeping your heart rate at a steady rate of 130 bpm is achievable by exercising on a treadmill, a cross trainer or going for an average run but that’s so boring and in my experience is not as effective as HIIT training! Yeah, I babble on about it, but it works! Richard Taylor, Tiger Fitness Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 49

The English National Cross Country Championships was held at Harewood House, Leeds in what was bizarrely warm temperatures for February, not like usual cross country weather. The course was extremely challenging but this didn’t deter Thetford AC athlete Ben Peck. Ben followed up his South of England Championship by producing a wonderful, battling performance to take the U13 boys National title and be crowned U13 boys National Cross Country Champion in what was a fine achievement against the best cross country athletes in the country. This proved to be a very proud day not just for Ben, but for Thetford AC as well. James Peck also put in a great performance in the U15 boys race to finish the 4km course in 60th position, continuing his fine cross country season.

Parkrunner Of The Month This month we celebrate a special young woman as she reaches a huge running milestone. Lauren Goldsmith, 27, completed her first parkrun in July 2014 and has completed 33 events at Thetford and Lowestoft parkrun. Lauren said she joined parkrun in the aim of getting fit and improving her overall well-being. Lauren's slowest 5k time is 38 minutes and her fastest time is 22 minutes and 33 seconds. Lauren said; "Parkrun and the running community at Thetford is amazing - I have made some great friends and everyone is really supportive of each other". Highs and Lows: Lauren says running has helped shape her as a person. It makes her feel free and that she can do “anything". Regarding the lows, Lauren says you just learn to deal with them in your own way and by taking Laura Goldsmith will be undertaking her charge. Lauren found that learning to be tough in the 100th marathon on 28th April face of adversity makes you a better runner mentally and can set you up for life. Like many other parkrunners Lauren chose marathons compared to middle distance Lauren has gone on to running longer distances. Unlike events because she enjoys long distance running and many other marathon runners where they would it does give you a lot of time to think. Lauren's slowest attempt one marathon for their first event, Lauren marathon, is 8 hours and 42 minutes and was due to decided to throw herself in the deep end and complete getting lost on a Long Distance Walking Association the Enigma Quadzilla event, in February 2015, which is Poppyline Marathon and completing 33 miles.
